A LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear BCC Members, We are set to begin the 2022 season in a matter of days, and it is going to be an exciting year as we look forward to the completion of Phase 1 of our Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan and the grand opening of the Five Farms clubhouse. The project is shaping up to be all we hoped—completely modernizing and expanding our casual dining and cocktailing experience at Five Farms. When we open this summer, we expect an outpouring of excitement. However, until we get there, we are still doing our best to accommodate your needs at Five Farms, and I would like to take this opportunity to address some of the general challenges that remain due to supply chain and labor challenges. The most frequently asked questions I receive from members about construction are, “how is construction progressing?” and “is it on schedule?” My intent for this letter is to communicate our progress and plans for the campus until we are open and fully operational. As you might expect with any renovation project, we have encountered quite a few challenges, most directly stemming from supply chain shortages, which is out of our control. Consequently, at this time, the project is behind schedule, moving the anticipated completion date to August. We will continue to provide regular updates as we progress and approach the opening of the Five Farms clubhouse. During this time, food and beverage services will remain available at Roland Park (dinner only) and Petite Farms Bistro. Once the pool opens on Friday, May 27, through the completion of Phase 1, some changes will occur to accommodate À la Carte diners, golfers, and pool-goers. These changes are as follows: • Petite Farms Bistro will be condensed to the covered patio behind the Japanese Maple trees. This area will be reserved for Bistro diners only. Reservations will be limited and recommended. This area will operate from the Bistro menu. • The Pool Café will remain open and available • The Club will be offering a “Pop-Up” Pizzeria at the tent on the East Lawn on Saturdays, June 4, 11, and 18, from 5:00pm to 9:00pm with live music and lawn games • Grill stations (weather permitting) will be available at the Golf House on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00am to 4:00pm Additionally, two weeks prior to the opening of the Five Farms clubhouse, À la Carte dining at Roland Park will close so that we can train our staff in the new facility and prepare to welcome all of you. We will be providing plenty
of notice as the schedule unfolds and as we get closer to the big opening. Now I would like to comment on the state of our staffing situation, which remains quite challenging. Last fall, I wrote to you about the challenges in the labor market for hospitality. As a response, the Club has increased its compensation to be more competitive in the local market and implemented new and innovative ways to attract staff to BCC. While we have had some success, we still face challenges locally and abroad. Our pool of international candidates remains tight with restrictions from COVID-19, intense competition, and visa approval challenges. We will continue to work through these issues, get the best possible staff for BCC, and not sacrifice our standards. We continue to ask for your patience as we address the impacts of the labor shortage. Also, as a Baltimore Business Journal Best Places to Work finalist for the last four years, BCC offers many opportunities for people looking for meaningful work in an exceptional environment. For example, I was recently told of a Towson University (TU) student who responded to our sponsorship at a TU Basketball game. The student was excited to work at BCC and was unaware that we offer many employment opportunities. As General Manager, few things worry me, but one that I take very seriously is the safety and well-being of members, children, guests, and staff. To that end, I ask all of you for your help with the following: • Members, staff, and children frequently walk to various activities on campus or in the parking lot. The construction project has altered many foot and vehicle traffic patterns adding to our concern. Please do not speed while driving on BCC property; in fact, drive slowly and be patient • Parents and guardians are responsible for their children’s location and behavior at all times and in all areas of the Club. This is of particular importance at the Pool Complex and other common areas of the Club I am looking forward to welcoming you all back to your favorite place soon. ◆ Respectfully and appreciatively,
M. Kent Johnson, CCM General Manager/COO

Great People Make Favorite Places
BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place. ◆
Staff Member of the Month FEBRUARY Danny Murphy, Junior Golf Director We congratulate Danny for being named the February Staff Member of the Month! Last season, he took on the lead role in our Junior Golf Program and brought even more excitement to the program along with him. Regardless of what event or program he was leading, Danny’s passion and enthusiasm for the game showed every day! He also incorporates his other passion for music and DJing into his teaching, which our junior golfers love. We applaud Danny’s innovative methods of instructing our youngest members and are proud to give him this award!
MARCH Bob McClafferty, Barber We congratulate Bob for being named March Staff Member of the Month! Bob is someone that takes pride in his work and continuously exceeds expectations. He is a great example of the BCC Core Four. Bob does what’s right, not what’s easy. While the Locker Room was short staffed, Bob did not hesitate to step in and take charge. Bob went above and beyond his daily tasks as Barber by cleaning and maintaining the Locker Room. Bob even came in on his days off to check in and make sure everything was running smoothly. His work ethic is one that is contagious and impactful. Bob provides exceptional service while being a friendly face for members and staff.
Baltimore Country Club Ranks #19 For the second year in a row, Baltimore Country Club has been ranked the #19 (#1 in Maryland) Top Ranked Culinary Experience out of 83 esteemed clubs and resorts in consideration for the 2022 Top Culinary Experiences by Club + Resort Business and Club + Resort Chef. This would not be possible without the support of our members and our creative, talented Culinary Team led by Executive Chef Richard Jallet. 2

À LA CARTE DINING
Participation in the Club's Wine Society series has skyrocketed in the last two years. More than ever, members have shown interest in BCC's Wine Program. We have listened to member feedback and have revamped our wine events to add more value to the experience. Therefore, we would like to introduce our new Uncorked wine event series—with elevated food and wine. Uncorked will introduce members to the best expression of all grape varietals from the best wine regions and wineries worldwide. This new event series will begin in June, and will occur on the first Thursday of the month, replacing Wine Society. In addition, Wine Society membership will be discontinued as of May 31.

Dive into Pool Season
This year we are excited to introduce Vince Posterli as our new Aquatics Director. You may have seen Vince around campus as our Talent Acquisition Coordinator in the Human Resources Department year-round, or as the BCC Summer Camp Director last year. Vince is bringing an exciting new addition to our pool calendar this season—Intro to Scuba! In 2018, Vince worked in Grand Cayman as a Dive Master, taking customers on guided trips underwater. This year, we are excited to announce a scuba diving course for BCC members! See below for more information. Based on member interest, we will also host a full certification class this summer with an open water dive! See you at the pool! ◆

I’ve seen other massage therapists over the years, and Jacqueline stood out as the best. I truly appreciate the wonderful addition of the Well-Being Center at Five Farms. I had my first massage it was a lovely experience. The space is relaxing and decorated beautifully. The colors, lighting, and layout are well-done. Additionally, I know Jacqueline from her former spa and she is beyond fantastic! Not only does she have amazing technique, but she has a calming presence that lends itself to an overall relaxing experience. I had a few minutes to chat with Janine after the massage, and that just completed the experience. Janine always brings such good energy and positivity when engaging with the members. She really did a great job on the Well-Being Center, and I’m sure many members will be utilizing it. Kim Gordon BCC Member

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE Although we are starting to see normal temperatures this May, spring 2022 has been a tough one for many turf managers with numerous reports of winterkill. Below average temperatures this spring have slowed recovery from our cultural practices (aeration and fairway dethatching) and winter damage across much of the U.S., particularly in the northeast on predominately poa annua greens. In addition, the cold spring has affected grasses from breaking dormancy, and this has affected when the grass will open on Driving Range tees. These temperatures significantly impacted the warm season grasses (bermudagrass and zoysiagrass). While we did increase the Driving Range tees by 38% last season, the tees are still undersized for the heavy practice they receive. Therefore, we continue to rely on artificial surfaces to preserve the grass until the surface and soil temperatures reach a point where the turf is actively growing and able to recover from the divot injury (growth rate peaks when air temperatures average 68 degrees for cool-season

grasses and 87 degrees for warmseason grasses. When the East Course opened at the end of March, you may have noticed numerous divots that had not recovered from the fall and winter months. Remember, a divot that is large enough to be replaced, should be replaced. Recovery from the sand and seed mix can take several weeks or longer to repair (depending on the time of the year) and is only used as a last resort. Speaking of divots, you may notice the new fairway sod at the bottom of the slope near #14 East green approach and the bottom of the hill at #15 East. These areas were covered this winter,
The proper technique for repairing ball marks is quite simple and requires only a few seconds of effort: 1. Insert any pointed tool at a 45 degree angle behind the ball mark and gently push the top of the tool toward the center of the ball mark 2. Continue working around the ball mark, pushing the surrounding turf in toward the center 3. Afterward, tamp the area down with your putter 14

and the divots were seeded and covered with a lightweight fabric to promote germination and healing. Unfortunately, there were simply too many divots and areas that didn’t recover during the winter. These two areas were sodded with 007 bentgrass and will remain Ground Under Repair until they become rooted and well established this spring. Have a great spring, and we look forward to seeing you on the course! ◆

Please follow the Golden Rule for divot recovery to ensure our fairways remain in top condition throughout the season: 1. A divot that is large enough for the golfer to replace should be replaced 2. Every divot that is not replaced has no chance of survival. This is our best opportunity we have for recovery from divots

HORTICULTURE UPDATE Spring is upon us, and in addition to preparing all the gardens for the season, the Horticulture Team at Five Farms has been busy planting trees, shrubs, and perennials across the grounds and courses. Sixteen native trees of 10 different species were installed on the golf courses, mostly at the perimeters and fencelines, along with a few larger specimens in key locations as directed by the golf course architect. These included Hornbeam, Hackberry, American Linden, Bur Oak, Scarlet Oak, Sugar Maple, Fruitless Sweetgum, Sweetbay Magnolia, Tuliptree, and Tupelo. The Team also planted screening plants (including Hinoki Cypress, Conoy Viburnum, and Buttonbush) to soften the new fence outside the Pool Café. This fenced area, which was previously an underused lawn space, now serves as much needed storage space for mobile kitchens and other operational needs to allow us to better serve the membership during clubhouse construction and beyond. A new sidewalk was installed to allow for better separation of this “back of house” space from members entering the pool from the top of the hill. Additionally, the Horticulture Team
continued improvements to the rear of the cart barn that began in the winter by widening the cart path and adding landscape lighting. Now the semishaded space beneath the crabapples and magnolias is underplanted with shrubs and perennial groundcovers to provide beautification while also buffering cart path noise from the 1st tee and 9th green of the West Course. This update reduces the amount of push mowing needed underneath the trees while also creating a lush, inviting path to the warm-up tee and cart staging areas.
signals the last frost date for our area, you’ll soon see the Team planting the thousands of annuals that will bloom at Five Farms all summer long. As soon as construction conditions allow, we will also begin installing the Phase 1 Master Plan landscaping. We are looking forward to another great season here at the Club! ◆

PADDLE SEASON RECAP As we look ahead to the warm spring weather, I wanted to take a few moments to recap the highlights of this season. The BCC Paddle Program is stronger than ever in numbers and results. This season BCC Men’s Interclub teams earned Championship trophies in divisions three and four, winning both matches in front of a home crowd. BCC doubles teams Steven Wieczynski/Jack Keenan and Bennett Bradley/Eddie Bradley III both won National Championships at the 40+ and 50+ PTI nationals. We also honored BCC member Tim Polk as the first annual recipient of the Tim Polk Award. The award will be given
annually to a member of the league that ‘fosters the growth and success of the league’. Other highlights include the Men’s and Women’s Club Champions, participation in the paddle tennis team nationals, and the introduction of a new benchmark paddle event; the Club Road Classic. This season sets the precedent for years to come as BCC further solidifies our program as among the best in the area. ◆
