ARCHIVES

Monthly Memory:

A Visitor Pass for a World-Famous Aviator We would like to thank Mr. Robert Cardwell, who’s ancestor was a staff member of the Club, for providing the Archive Committee with a photo of this letter. The letter is dated October 19, 1927, and was addressed to the Club requesting a guest pass for Mr. Charles A. Lindbergh. Mr. Lindbergh was one of the best known American aviators and figures in aeronautical history. The request was submitted just five months after Mr. Lindbergh completed the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean on May 21, 1927. The letter reads as follows: My dear Mr. Cardwell: I beg to confirm my telephone talk of last night when I asked you kindly to issue visitor's card to Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh. I very much appreciate your prompt compliance with my request. Believe me, with kindest regards, Yours very sincerely, Edwin J. Farber.

THE POWER OF

PILATES By Gina Frank, Group Exercise Instructor

Pilates is an excellent way to get your body moving, improve your core and alignment, and your golf game. The Club offers several Pilates Reformer classes on our Group Exercise schedule. One goal of adding Pilates into your workout routine is to develop more efficient movement patterns which will transfer over into your daily routine. When you move through exercises mindfully, allowing yourself to fully explore different ways of doing the same thing, your body moves in a more positive way and can get stronger.

While participating in our Pilates classes, we use a variety of props alongside the reformer. Props are a great way to give you an extra challenge while adding some fun to your practice. Below are some of the you will see in one of our Reformer Pilates classes. Check out our Group Exercise Schedule and/or contact Gina at gfrank@bcc1898.com for private sessions for some Pilates fun! ◆

Mini Ball

Super versatile for support of the head and lower back

Theraband

Used to support and guide the body while adding a little more resistance

Dowel

A tool used to develop a strong core and enhance the practice

Magic Circle

Used to strengthen muscles, improve areas like inner and outer thighs, upper arms, and chest with resistance

Jumpboard & Trampoline

Accessories often used for plyometric training, adding a little cardio to your workout

Block

Used to support alignment

Pilates Reformer

A traditional piece of equipment that looks like a bed with springs, a sliding carriage, ropes, and pulleys. There are five springs, using only a few at a time to add resistance depending on the exercise and muscle(s) being worked 10

STRESS & FOOD

By Vanessa O’Brey, Health, Wellness, & Life Coach When you are stressed out, the foods most reach for are likely to be traditional “comfort” foods—like a big meal, take-out, greasy foods, sweet foods, and alcohol. However, this is not a great solution. When your body is not getting the proper nutrition, you can begin to feel less energetic, more lethargic, and in some cases unable to concentrate and focus—all leading to added stress. The best way to fight stress is to have a healthy, balanced diet and choose foods that not only make you feel healthier overall, but can improve your mental health and stress levels. Some of the best stress-fighting foods include avocado, blueberries, chocolate, walnuts, pistachios, green leafy vegetables, fermented foods, chamomile tea, oatmeal, and grass-fed beef. Choosing these stressbusting foods will help heal and calm your mind permanently, rather than providing a temporary fix.

THAI YOGA MASSAGE BENEFITS FOR GOLFERS By Marissa Loforte, Personal Coach & Thai Yoga Massage Practitioner

Within a 60-minute Thai Yoga Massage session, the avid golfer will relax and rejuvenate their body to be ready to walk their next 18 holes with fewer aches and pains. I teach the power of breath and mind-body connection. The golfer learns how to deep belly breathe, which allows physical tension to release and helps you enter a state of mediation. I synchronizes my breath to the golfer while I press and knead the muscles and gently guide you into yoga stretches. As a result, the golfer will gain mobility and flexibility that directly impacts the ease and comfort of their golf swing. Thai Yoga Massage is a proactive and active recovery for the golf season that is encouraged!

Another way to ensure you are choosing stress-fighting foods is meal prepping for your week. Planning your meals wisely is key to staying physically fit and healthy and staying mentally strong, avoiding bad choices, and being able to manage your levels of stress best.

To schedule your Thai Yoga Massage session, email Marissa at mloforte@bcc1898.com.

For more information on Health, Wellness, & Life Coaching, contact Vanessa at vobrey@bcc1898.com.

YOGA & GOLF?

By Rebecca Printen, Therapeutic Yoga Instructor Does yoga really help improve your golf game? The answer is a clear YES! Here's why many golfers have embraced the practice of yoga to improve their game: MENTAL FOCUS. Yoga incorporates meditation which helps calm the mind and increase concentration. The ability to work with the mind can be taken off the mat and onto the course.

STRENGTH & ENDURANCE. Yoga requires strength. To get in and out of poses and hold them—the body builds strength. Yoga increases muscle strength in the entire body, but especially the core.

FLEXIBILITY. Being flexible can help with any sport, especially to prevent injuries. The golf swing coils and uncoils the spine over the lower body. Good flexibility equals more power behind your swing.

Make no mistake—golfers are athletes, and athletes should keep their bodies in shape. Yoga and golf both use mind and body to achieve success. Yoga makes sense for a golfer who wants to be at the top of their game!

BALANCE. Along with improved balance, yoga also helps with stability. A strong golf swing must include stability. Good stability and balance will increase your confidence on the course.

Join Rebecca Monday nights at 6:00pm for Alignment Yoga for Golfers (Pre-registration is required via the Fitness and/ or Club Calendar). ◆

TIPS FROM THE PRO

By Stephen Oberstadt, Lead Assistant Professional

Navigate Your Way to Lower Scores Short game is one of the quickest ways to improve your score and an area of all our games that doesn’t quite get the love and attention it deserves. Here are some tips on ways to effectively navigate your way onto the greens and to lower scores.

Simplify your goal.

Use the “law of the land”.

Anytime we find ourselves greenside, golfers often think small. We use the flag as our final resting place when our main goal should be to have the putter in our hand on the next shot. If our goal is to consistently be on the green for our next shot, some of the pressure to perform and level of difficulty disappears.

Just like in corporate America, investing in land is a good option. Around the greens, we can use the same mentality. What I mean by this, is to get the ball on the ground as quickly as possible and use the land to get to your destination. Too often players reach for the high-lofted, high degree of difficulty option around the greens when less loft will do the trick. Try reaching for that pitching wedge, 9 or 8 iron to get the ball rolling a putt quicker.

Ask yourself, where would I like to putt from? Everyone who has played at BCC before knows you must stay below the hole at all costs. Keep this in the front of your mind when pitching or chipping around the greens. Survey the area around the hole in a 5 to 10 ft circle to find a flat, uphill putt. Aiming towards this area and leaving yourself a makable putt of longer distance, can often be more effective than a short putt of higher difficulty.

GROUNDS

GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE Temperatures were mild for most of October and we avoided any incidences of heavy frost. Unfortunately, colder weather is coming, and heavy frost occurs when night and morning temperatures drop to a point where water freezes inside the plant and forms very sharp ice crystals. Pressure from foot, vehicular, and animal traffic on rigid, frozen turf ruptures the cells within the plant and causes injury or even death of the plant. Delays in morning start times will be necessary due to this weather event. Please be mindful during the late fall and winter months that temperatures do not allow for any recovery of playing surfaces. Continue to repair your ball marks, replace your divots, and wherever possible, rotate from where you tee off to reduce wear and tear from concentrated areas. The less damage from the winter will translate into better playing conditions in the spring. The bermudagrass on the Driving Range and West Course tees have been seeded to perennial ryegrass. This is part of a two-grass system strategy that utilizes the warm season grasses in the hot summer months and cool season grasses in fall, winter, and spring. To ensure the Driving Range tees are in the best possible condition next season, starting this past week, all play from the south end (near the Golf House) will be from the mats, and extended practice on the north end (Back Range) will remain on the grass until November 1. Once growth stops for the season, the tees will be covered with a fabric to enhance the growth of the overseed and protect the bermudagrass against winter kill. For the greens to remain healthy and in the best possible condition for next season, we will be completing core aeration followed by sand topdressing to fill the holes on the West Course. We will be performing an additional practice called Drill-and-Fill on greens that are slow to drain and stay wet for extended periods. This process drills holes up to 12 inches deep into the putting green on 6-inch centers, removing soil and backfilling each hole with sand to create deep sand columns in the root zone. On the East Course, we will complete traditional core aeration and topdressing followed by DryJect sand injection. This machine uses high

Drill-and-Fill machine

pressure water to inject sand into the putting green profile to reduce organic matter and improve surface firmness. We hope you are enjoying the fall weather and have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! ◆

Tim Kennelly, CGCS Head Greenkeeper

East & West Course Closures • The East Course will be closed Monday, November 1, 2, & 3 for aeration • The West Course will be closed for fairway aeration on November 29 & 30 • The East Course will be closed for fairway aeration on December 1 • The East Course will be closed for the season on December 1 15
