Seasonal Racquets Professional David Loveman has been a tremendous addition to our Racquets Team. Since David’s arrival, he has had a wonderful attitude and an infectious personality. He has heavily assisted with our junior and adult programming, continues to work extremely hard on keeping our facility at a platinum standard, and provides a great service in our Pro Shop. The days can be long in the summer heat and the tasks mundane, but David always has a big smile on his face and can be trusted to get the job done. David truly lives up to the BCC standard of taking ownership and being accountable. I am really excited to see how much David can help further improve our Racquets Program this fall.

Reilly has been with BCC since 2018, where he started working in the Bag Room. During his three-year tenure in the Bag Room, Reilly showed tremendous growth and took pride in connecting with the membership each day. He was recently promoted to Assistant Outside Golf Services Manager in March. Reilly truly enjoys the work he does, and it really shows when he is engaging with his peers and especially with the members. He is doing an outstanding job so far and continues to challenge himself to learn and grow as a professional.

Vince Posterli embodies our Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places and has done a phenomenal job (especially in the aftermath of the Pandemic) in hiring great people for the Club. This summer season, Vince has accepted the role as the Aquatics Director and has been instrumental in the success of our safe and active pool season. Vince has kept the lifeguards productive and engaged while educating them on aquatic safety and pool maintenance. The Club has also received countless positive comments about Vince’s charm, empathy, and attention to detail from the membership.

Exceptional Leadership Award

We congratulate our Line Cook Joe for being named June Staff Member of the Month! His way of taking ownership of the Grill Station has not gone unnoticed. Joe is always involved with the setup and creates specials for members to enjoy! Way to take initiative, Joe!

There are many things you can do to set themselves up for regular restful slumber. Here are a few tips for getting better sleep.

8 August 2022 FITNESS & WELLNESS

While you sleep, your body is hard at work. It restores hormonal balance, repairs itself, and keeps the circulatory and immune systems functioning properly. Your brain forms and stores memories. Quality sleep allows you to be energetic and alert. It allows you to lose weight, exercise, work, learn, socialize, and do all the things you enjoy.

Sleep is a great place to start understanding one’s health. It is also a good measurement tool for our overall health and well-being. In general, it’s important that sleep hygiene is prioritized. Sleep is medicine, just like food is medicine, and may even be more important than diet. Sleep regulates your brain function, helps stabilize your mood, and is a time when the body heals. It is critical for a healthy body because every cell and hormone is supported by proper rest.

10 August 2022 GOLF FALL GOLF INSTRUCTION As we dive into fall with historically beautiful golf weather, the Instructional Team is excited to share with you some of the changes we’ve made to the program. Our women’s instructional offerings will now be specific to the Reluctant Ladies’ 3-Hole, Ladies’ 9-Hole, and Women’s 18-Hole groups on a weekly basis. Heavily requested topics we will cover include wedges, putting, bunker play, trouble shots, and game management. If you are on the membership waitlist, you can join the clinics based on how many holes you would normally play. We hope that this new format will cater to more players. In September and October, I will be offering a four-week program for girls ages 7-10 and 10-13. The girls will meet weekly to learn about the different aspects of golf in a fun environment while meeting other golfers.

UPDATE

12 August 2022 GROUNDS GREENKEEPER’S

Summer is a great season for golf, but hot and humid weather can be tough on grass. Scan the QR code to watch a video from the USGA about defensive maintenance practices Superintendents use to keep grass healthy until milder weather arrives. ◀ Scan the code to watch the video

Last month, I wrote about the “dog days of summer” and the need to lightly syringe or cool the surfaces to ensure the survival of turfgrass during the summer stress season. While fall is approaching and relief is in sight, with shortened daylight and cooler nights (temperatures in the 60s), September can still be very stressful to the turf plants, especially during sunny days when air temperatures exceed 90 degrees. The late summer months are generally the wettest of the year, with tropical storms that can dump heavy amounts of rain in a short period of time. When air temperatures are above 90 degrees, wet soil can range from 95 to 100 degrees. The combination of wet soil, that does not cool at night (mid 70s), can be especially lethal to turf. The

Fall is generally the best time to establish grass from seed due to shorter daylight hours, warm daytime temperatures, cooler nights, and less competition from weeds. Now is a critical time for divot repair on fairways and tees, and everyone can play an important role in taking care of the Club’s courses.

The golden rule for your divot recovery: Once a divot is taken, the first option is, if the divot is intact and soil remains attached, it will most likely survive if it is placed back and tamped back in place. If the divot is destroyed and can’t be replaced, fill the divot with the seed/soil mix on the carts and tamp it with your foot, so the mix is level with the surrounding area.

We appreciate your assistance and how it relates to keeping both courses in the best condition possible. ◆

In July and August, our Team repaired 28 tees on the West Course by stripping the existing grass, laser grading so the surface is smooth and level, and then resod with bermudagrass. We appreciate your patience and understanding while we completed this work. We chose bermudagrass and this specific time of the year to do this work because bermudagrass performs best in the hottest and most humid environments, which correlates with our busiest time of the year for play. We appreciate the hard work of West Course Superintendent Justin Gladhill and West Course Assistant Superintendent Zach Reid, who managed and executed the tee work along with local golf course contractor McDonald & Sons—all the while the West Course remained open for play.
