Gisele Bündchen has become the world’s most highly paid supermodel. The former Victoria’s Secret ‘Angel’ is the world’s first billionaire supermodel. Forbes says the 31-year-old Brazilian beauty has earned roughly $250 million over the last decade.

Victoria’s Secret is now one of the biggest selling lingerie brands in the world but when it first began in 1977, the original owners had no idea that it would become such an iconic brand. Founded by Roy Raymond and his wife who saw an opening for a lingerie brand that men could buy for their wives without being embarrassed when entering the store, Victoria’s Secret was born to give women the lingerie they wanted from the men they loved. Raymond and his wife studied the market for years and borrowed just $80,000 to launch the product and the company’s first store in Palo Alto, California.
In its first three years, Victoria’s Secret made $500,000 and Raymond was able to open four more store locations. Business was booming and with both men and women entering the stores to buy the innovative new designs of women’s lingerie, Raymond and his wife knew they were onto a good thing.
By 1980, the company launched their first mail order catalogue which was received with much enthusiasm and just two years later the catalogues accounted for 55% of the $7 million annual turn-over. At just $3 a catalogue, it meant that many sales were being made and the business was going from strength to strength. However after many years focusing on the male consumers, who were buying items for their wives and girlfriends, the company started to become too limited and Raymond was even headed towards bankruptcy. When he was
approached by Limited Stores Inc in 1982 with an offer of $4 million, Raymond was desperate to sell. He thought the company had gone as far as he could take it but could not have predicted how it could have grown from those early years. Limited Stores Inc bought a company that had six stores and a 42-page catalogue with an annual gross of $6 million but the new owner Leslie Wexner had other ideas about how he wanted to take the company forward. Wexner decided that to take the company to the next level 9
10
he should abandon Raymond’s original idea of appealing to men buying underwear for their wives and instead he would focus on the females themselves. He wanted to transform the business from ‘burlesque to main stream’ and with new colours, styles, textures, patterns and glamour, he was able to appeal to a wider target audience and now, women were taking the lead and buying sexy, glamorous underwear for themselves. In the first five years since the takeover, Victoria’s Secret went from a four-store boutique business to a 346 store retailer and they became the only national chain of lingerie stores. However, it wasn’t just the stores that were doing well, Wexner also kept the catalogue going strong and in 1987 it was reported that it was among the best-selling catalogues in retail. Such was the demand from women to own something from the fashionable, trendy brand that in 1990 the company released their own line of fragrances. Also in 1990, when it was reported that many other fashion and clothing companies were struggling and in a mini recession, Victoria’s Secret managed to sell more than any other retail store in the world. With other companies now cashing in on what was becoming a booming lingerie industry and with the release of their competitor, the WonderBra, in 1994, Victoria’s Secret upped their game and
launched their first television campaign for the company’s Miracle Bra. The following year, in 1995, Victoria’s Secret held their first fashion show and promoted it as a ‘self-assured strutting for women and a voyeuristic pleasure for men, with lingerie as the focus’. The lavish event has continued ever since and is now televised on a primetime American channel each year, with millions of people tuning in to watch. Since its inception, the show has drawn celebrities, performers and household names who vie for a place on the runway alongside the models, or on the front row. As the fashion show grew each year so did its running budget - the first year producers of the show spent $120,000 whereas in 2011 the budget was a whopping $12 million. Also as the hype around Victoria’s Secret became bigger, so did the desire to be one of the models walking the runway. The Victoria’s Secret Angels, as they are now known, are an envied elite group of top models, who are each also spokeswomen for the brand. The company lists 10 supermodels on its website each year and they officially release an Angel from duty before the list goes up, replacing her with a new face. Over the years, many of the most well-known and successful supermodels have become Angels, these include Tyra Banks, Helena
11
Christensen, Heidi Klum, Claudia Schiffer, Jessica Stam, Miranda Kerr, Cara Delevingne, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosia, Karolina Kurkova, Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley and the world’s most highly paid supermodel Gisele Bündchen.
Tyra Banks
Over the years Victoria’s Secret has grown from a small niche business into a worldwide retail brand and women everywhere want to not only wear the lingerie, but be like the models fronting the campaigns. Such is the demand that the company now has over 1050 stores in the United States, 23 stores in Canada, five stores in the United Kingdom plus a boutique at Heathrow Airport, and many more 12

Aside from their lingerie, Victoria’s Secret have launched a range of other products including a beauty range, fragrances, a swimwear line, music cds and a new younger lingerie line for 15-22 year old girls called Pink. This line of lingerie includes underwear, sleepwear, loungewear, accessories and beauty products and the aim from the company was to appeal to a younger audience who would buy from Victoria’s Secret Pink range until the time came when they wanted sexier, more adult lingerie and they would then buy from the older ranges.
Claudia Schiffer
The Angels have such a high status as models for the company, that they have become in high demand from other companies and many are now on the top 10 highest paid models in the world. Gisele takes the title and if reports are to be believed she is on her way to becoming the world’s first billionaire supermodel – beside Victoria’s Secret she fronted brands including Chanel, H&M and David Yurman last year and the Brazilian beauty made a cool $32 million. Second, third and fourth spots are taken by Orlando Bloom’s wife Miranda Kerr, Adriana Lima, and Kate Moss who is the highest placed non-Angel in the list.

franchise stores around the world including Poland, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Kuwait, and the Dominican Republic. The catalogue is also in huge demand still and in recent years the company has hired writers from popular magazines to give the catalogue a more magazine feel to the text and styling.

Cara Delevingne
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
Alessandra Ambrosia
It’s clear the company has grown and gone from strength to strength since its inception in 1977, and it is now one of the best-selling and fastest growing retail brands in the world. The demand is such that Victoria’s Secret is sure to be selling beautiful lingerie for years to come.

X Factor Judges let their hair down The X Factor contestants have been told that they can’t go OTT when they go out partying, but sounds like the judges and presenters should have been given the same warning. At Nicole Scherzinger’s judges’ houses in Antigua the former Pussycat Doll partied hard with Dermot O’leary and Caroline Flack, in fact the X Factor group were so raucous that staff and other guests in the same resort had to tell them to keep it down. There are reports that Nicole started drinking rum cocktails on the beach at 5pm before she moved to a roof top bar with the rest of the X Factor gang, they then spent the night drinking and singing. Apparently Nicole, Dermot and Caroline were knocking back rum cocktails, laughing, joking and singing I’ll Be There For You – the theme tune from TV series Friends. By the time they left at about midnight theirs was a 20-strong group who kept being asked to keep the noise down by hotel staff. There was a band playing Caribbean music in the restaurant but the X Factor group were singing so loudly other diners couldn’t hear what the band was playing. Oh dear!

Tamara Ecclestone happier than ever Tamara Ecclestone and her husband Jay Rutland are expecting their first child together. The 29-year-old heiress has announced that she is 14-weeks pregnant, just over three months after her £12 million wedding to her former stockbroker hubby. Tamara and Jay only met nine months ago, but after a whirlwind romance they tied the knot during a ceremony in Cap Ferrat on the French Rivera. The Formula One heiress is the daughter of billionaire tycoon Bernie Ecclestone, and after spending out a fortune on the wedding we can’t wait to see how ridiculously extravagant the baby shower will be.

‘I just feel so lucky. I never imagined this all happening so quickly. It’s crazy how life works in such mysterious ways. ‘Jay loves children and I’m really excited for the next phase of our relationship.’
The actress will leave Coronation Street next summer and she wants to have something to keep her busy between acting jobs.
“
‘I’m really excited but very nervous. I’ve saved some money for the quiet times,’ says Michelle, 26. ‘All actors have quiet times and I can’t bear sitting around, so I’d like to invest in a business which will give me something to focus on when I’m not working. It’ll probably be something within the fashion, beauty or health industry.’ Michelle, who recently got engaged to boyfriend Mark Wright, would particularly like to use her knowledge of fashion for her venture as she thinks she’s learnt a lot recently.
H
‘Over the last 18 months I’ve found my sense of style. I never dress for others and, yes, I’ve had a few fashion failures. Like most women, I’ve got stuff in my wardrobe with the price tag and think, “Why did I buy that?”’

Is Divorce on the Cards for Khloe and Lamar?
Miley and Liam call it a day! Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are officially over and their engagement is off, however, the singer is keeping the ring. It looks like the ‘Paranoia’ actor doesn’t mind since he has already moved on as he was seen kissing his alleged new girlfriend, Eiza Gonzalez. Hemsworth wants his former fiancé to keep the $250,000 engagement ring that he gave her in May 2012. It was also reported that the “Hunger Games” star told Cyrus that he wanted her to keep the expensive ring as a symbol of their relationship. Hemsworth was reportedly very involved in the design of the ring, going “back and forth” with designer Neil Lane until settling on a 3.5-carat cushion cut diamond in a vintage-inspired gold setting flecked with tiny diamonds. Cyrus was last seen wearing the ring when she appeared in public with her ex-fiancé at the premiere of “Paranoia” in Los Angeles on August 8.
Khloe Kardashian who’s husband Lamar Odom was recently charged with one count of driving under the influence (DUI) in the wake of his battle with substance abuse, is doing her best to stay strong and focus on her own well-being after unsuccessful attempts to help her husband of nearly four years overcome his recent struggles. Lamar briefly entered rehab earlier this month, but checked out after less than one day. Prior to his short stint, the 29-year-old beauty and her family had been urging Odom to seek treatment following his DUI arrest. Khloe apparently gave Lamar an ultimatum: If he didn’t get help, she’d end the marriage, and so far, he’s ignoring her. While Khloe’s done everything in her power to help her hubby, she’s now come to terms with the fact that she may not be able to save their marriage. Although the couple’s troubled marriage has taken a backseat to Lamar’s addiction, the source believes that ultimately, their romance will end in divorce.

It seems like Hemsworth has already moved on fairly quickly as he has been seen kissing singer-actress Eiza Gonzales at her apartment complex in Beverly Hills on Tuesday. The two of them previously went clubbing together in Las Vegas, just barely a day after splitting with Cyrus.
Hollywood star Richard Gere has split from his actress wife Carey Lowell, according to a U.S. report The Pretty Woman star has separated from his spouse of 11 years, former Bond girl and Law & Order regular Lowell, and is moving forward with plans for a divorce, reports New York Post. A source tells the publication the stars, who have a 13-year-old son called Homer, have been “spending time apart for quite some time”. Gere, 64, was previously married to supermodel Cindy Crawford, while Lowell, 52, has been wed twice before.

What is Halloween?
Halloween is a secular holiday combining vestiges of traditional harvest festival celebrations with customs more peculiar to the observance such as costume wearing, trick-or-treating, pranksterism, and decorative imagery based on the changing of the seasons, death, and the supernatural. It takes place on October 31st.
Though it was regarded up until the last few decades of the 20th century as primarily a children’s holiday, in more recent years activities such as costume parties, themed decorations, and even trick-or-treating have grown increasingly popular with adults as well, making Halloween a celebration for all ages.
What does the name ‘Halloween’ mean? The name Halloween (originally spelt Hallowe’en) is a contraction of All Hallows Even, meaning the day before All Hallows Day (better known today as All Saints Day), a Catholic holiday commemorating Christian saints and martyrs observed since the early Middle Ages on November 1st.
How and when did Halloween originate?
The best available evidence indicates that Halloween originated in the early Middle Ages as a Catholic vigil observed on the eve of All Saints Day, November 1st. It has become commonplace to trace its roots even further back in time to a pagan festival of ancient Ireland known as Samhain (pronounced sow’-en or sow’een), about which little is actually known. The prehistoric observance is said to have marked the end of summer and the onset of winter, and was celebrated with feasting, bonfires, sacrificial offerings, and homage to the dead.
Despite thematic similarities, there’s scant evidence of any real historical continuity linking Samhain to the Medieval observance of Halloween, however. Some modern historians, notably Ronald Hutton (The Stations of the Sun: A History of the Ritual Year in Britain, 1996) and Steve Roud (The English Year, 2008, and A Dictionary of English Folklore, 2005), flatly reject the popular notion that November 1st was designated All Saints Day by the Church to “Christianize” the pagan festival. Citing a lack of historical evidence, Roud dismisses the Samhain theory of origin altogether.
“Certainly the festival of Samhain, meaning Summer’s End, was by far the most important of the four quarter days in the medieval Irish calendar, and there was a sense that this was the time of year when the physical and supernatural worlds were closest and magical things could happen,” Roud notes, “but however strong the evidence in Ireland, in Wales it was May 1st and New Year which took precedence, in Scotland there is hardly any mention of it until much later, and in Anglo-Saxon England even less.” It seems reasonable to conclude that the connection between Halloween and the pagan Irish festival of Samhain has, at the very least, been overstated in some modern accounts of the holiday’s origin.
Earliest Halloween customs The earliest documented customs attributable to Halloween proper grew out of the tandem observances of All Saints Day (November 1st), a day of prayer for saints and martyrs of the Church, and All Souls Day (November 2nd), a day of prayer for the souls of all the dead. Among the practices associated with Halloween during the Medieval period were the
lighting of bonfires, evidently to symbolize the plight of souls lost in purgatory, and souling, which consisted of going door-to-door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for “soul cakes” and other treats. Mumming (or “guising”), a custom originally associated with Christmas consisting of parading in costume, chanting rhymes, and play-acting, was a somewhat later addition to Halloween. Again, however, despite the obvious similarities between old and new, it’s an exaggeration to say these Medieval customs “survived” to the present day, or even that they “evolved” into modern Halloween practices such as trick-or-treating. There’s no direct historical evidence of such continuity. By the time Irish immigrants took the holiday to North America in the mid-1800s, mumming and souling were all but forgotten in their home country, where the known Halloween customs of the time consisted of praying, communal feasting, and playing divination games such as bobbing for apples. The secular, commercialised holiday we know today would be barely recognizable to Halloween celebrants of even just a century ago.

a l o r i g n e Fu Playerz Bar which was formed in January 2012 on the demise of the popular Linekers Bar, is now fast becoming one of the best places to go for a night out in Fuengirola. The change over from Linekers to Playerz, started last year when the premises was given a complete makeover. The old bar was stripped back and everything was done up from scratch. Then following on from a successful first year, another refurbishment took place just before the Summer allowing for an extremely elegant V.I.P area with a top draw bottle service.
There are three partners in the Playerz group, Peter, Robyn and Anthony. However, Playerz is run by Peter, who was previously the manager of Linekers Bar which he ran for over 7 years. Peter, who is regarded as the ‘main man’ at Playerz due to his longevity and dedication to the success of the bar and not to forget his popularity amongst customers and employees, has really turned Playerz Bar into a well deserved, renown party venue. Since the change over from Linekers to Playerz, the bar has only gone from strength to strength and is regarded as one of the most popular bars to head to on a night out in Fuengirola. 20

Beauty
D.I.Y
Some of the DIY beauty myths you’ve heard over the years are a load of rubbish. Whoever thought washing hair with beer was a good idea must have been under the influence of one too many shandies themselves, but there are some quick fixes you can try at home that do work. Here are some of our favourites:
Use honey as a face mask Honey (it has to be raw honey, mind you) has antibacterial properties and is very effective at helping acne-prone skin. Slather on your face, leave for 10 minutes, wash off with warm water and the job’s a good’un. Some people complain that the honey draws out the toxins, causing problem skin to get worse before it gets better, but in the long run it’s a good solution.
Use baking soda on teeth to make them whiter Are you loathed to splash out on expensive teeth whitening kits? Try mixing one tablespoon of baking soda with three drops of hydrogen peroxide then use it as a toothpaste for a healthy set of pearly whites.
Shave legs with hair conditioner Forget spending money on a separate shaving foam, simply use hair conditioner instead. It’s super moisturising, makes the hairs softer and therefore easier to shave. Winning.
Use evening primrose oil to help spots heal faster Burst an evening primrose oil capsule and apply to troublesome spots to help them heal in half the time. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which can really help take the redness out of sore spots. Apply overnight and sleep in it for best results. 32
Never EVER go without a pot of Vaseline Petroleum jelly has countless uses. One of our favourite things to do is slather it all over our feet, slip on a pair of fluffy socks and then sleep. If you dye your own hair, it’s great for preventing the dye from staining your skin, just use it as a barrier around the hairline, ears and neck. Finally, it can also be used to tame unruly eyebrows.
Lemon peel can remove nail varnish stains If dark nail polish has stained your nails, simply rub some lemon peel on the stubborn spot. Soaking the tips of your nails in lemon juice can also make them whiter.
Use an orange to exfoliate The acid and Vitamin C in oranges makes for an excellent exfoliator. If you don’t have time to be concocting fancy homemade potions and lotions, simply cut an orange in half and use on your knees and elbows.
Shave your legs last If you tend to get bumpy or irritated legs after shaving, do it at the end of your shower when the warm water will have opened up your pores and the hair will be softer.
Keep your beauty products in the fridge Not all of them, obviously, but nail varnishes, eyebrow & eyeliner pencils and lipsticks can all be kept in the chilled section. Doing this will make your polishes last longer, as well as causing lip & eye pencils to be firmer and therefore give sharper lines.
Serum + foundation = beautifully soft skin Add a drop of serum (we love Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair) to your foundation to give your skin an extra glow.
Add a drop of peppermint oil to your lip gloss Add just a drop for a plumped up pout. Warning: it may tingle.

The Beat 106FM Top 5 Albums of 2013 So summer has pretty much come and gone, festivals have been seen and conquered by millions, so what´s left for us to do now the weather is starting to subside? Well my advice to you is to purchase a few of the best albums of the year and sit back, relax and enjoy some music in the luxury of your home, your car, or if you can get away with it, your work!!! With such a great array of music released this year it is quite hard to pick my top 5 albums, but none the less I have. No.1 Album for me has to be Rudimental - Home (Released April 2013). This D&B/Dub Step/Break Beat group has dominated the UK and European dance floors for the past year with hits like ”Feel the love” (featuring John Newman)”, Powerless”, ”Waiting all night” and many more No.2 Album has to be Disclosure - Settle (Released May 2013). This Electro/house/Abstract this group has been smashing the charts and festivals and still seem to have much more up their sleeve with hits such as ” White Noise”, ”Latch“ and ” When the fire starts to burn”. No.3 Album has got to be the new release from the Arctic Monkeys - AM (Released September 2013). with hits ” Do I wanna know”, ”Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” and many more, this is an album not to be taken lightly, as I predict this will smash it in the album charts. No.4 Album Avicii - True (Released September 2013). With hits such as “Levels”, ”Wake me up”, ”You make me”, and “I could be the one”. This has to be another album not to be missed. No.5 Album has to be the new release from Jack Johnson - From here to now to you (Released September 2013). Hits such as “Tape deck”, ”I got you” and “one and zero´s” are just a few to mention from this long awaited album. That should be enough to keep you going for now but do not fear we will be back next month with some more great musical info. Written by Gareth Warlow aka Beat Boy 34
Bird pooh for beauty?
That’s what goes into facials at a luxury spa where the traditional Japanese treatment using imported Asian nightingale excrement mixed with rice bran goes for $180 a pop. Does it smell? Yes, but like toasted rice! After about five minutes, it comes off with a foaming cleanser and your face is draped in a warm, wet towel bathed in lavender and geranium essences. Finally, the grand finale – a green-tea collagen mask.
About 100 women and men go into the Shizuka New York skin care salon, just off Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, each month to get the treatment, which is promoted as a way to keep the face soft and smooth using an enzyme in the poop to gently exfoliate the skin. Spa owner Shizuka Bernstein, a Tokyo native married to an American, has been offering what she calls the Geisha Facial for about five years. She says that she is trying to bring Japanese beauty secrets to the United States. The Geisha Facial pooh treatment, while relatively rare in the United States, is no secret in Japan, where it was first used in the 1600s by actors and geishas. Apparently that’s why Japanese grandmothers have beautiful complexions.
What does a treatment entail? You recline back on a table, relaxing amid aromas of camellia, lavender and rose. Then the treatment begins with steam to open the pores and soften the skin. Cream is applied. And then comes what is called the nightingale part. The cream-coloured pooh is poured then dried and finely ground, into a bowl, mixing it with the rice bran using a small spatula. The potion is then applied to your face with a brush, rubbing it in using ones hands.
A common misconception is that any old bird pooh, even from pigeons, is used. This is not the case. Only droppings from birds of the nightingale species are used because they live on seeds, producing the natural enzyme that is the active ingredient. So is this yet another beauty craze that will be here today and gone tomorrow? Lets wait and see if bird pooh comes to a salon near you!
