E
lliot John Gleave was born in June 1982 and is better known by his stage name Example. An English singer, songwriter and rapper signed to Epic Records and Sony Music, his name arose due to his initials being E.G., which is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase exempli gratia (“for example”). He started rapping at a young age and his first experience of rapping was through a rap battle at a house party in Shepherd’s Bush in 1994, when he was 12 years old.
Example made his first chart appearance in September 2009, when he released Watch the Sun Come Up as the lead single from his second album Won’t Go Quietly through Data Records. The record only peaked at number 19 but his second single Won’t Go Quietly reached number 6.
At University he started garage MCing and met producer Joseph Gardner AKA Rusher with whom he started his own label All The Chats. After releasing three singles through his own label, Example received attention from Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and others at Radio 1. He also caught the attention of people at four record labels – perhaps most significantly Mike Skinner (of The Streets), owner of The Beats label. Soon after signing with The Beats, Example put out a response to Lily Allen’s No.1 hit Smile entitled Vile and received Radio 1 airplay from Zane Lowe, Jo Whiley and Chris Moyles.
In June 2011, he released his first single from his third album, Changed the Way You Kiss Me where it debuted at number one in the UK as did his second song Stay Awake. The album Playing in The Shadows debuted at number one when it was released later that year. His fourth studio album did relatively well and his fifth album, Live Life Living, is due for release this month.
S
am Wire, better known as DJ Wire, has been performing with Example for some years now after starting his career at the pirate radio station Freak FM with DJ EZ and the Heartless Crew. He is credited with playing an instrumental part in the formation of the UK grime scene with the release of his seminal track Believe Me in 2003. In 2006 he made the 7
crossover to drum & bass and in 2008 he teamed up with Chase & Status to run MTA Records. It was here that he met Example. Wire produced several tracks for Example’s Won’t Go Quietly album and he became part of Example’s live shows. During this time he also produced for Ellie Goulding, Liquid and Kids in Glass Houses.
In 2011 DJ Wire began performing with Example all over the world at concerts and festivals and at the end of the year he presented his first multi-genre mix CD, The Playlist, for Ministry of Sound, with Example. He still performs around the world with Example and will be seen with him in Marbella this summer. Catch them both at Sleek on June 28th.

Marvin Humes Singer and TV Star Marvin Humes was born in March 1985, in Greenwich, London, the son of a Jamaican father and AngloScottish mother and he is the middle child of two brothers, Leon and Jackson. He started his music career in a band called VS, but shortly after releasing an album, they split and he then spent considerable time appearing in television show Holby City as Robbie Waring. Humes was thinking about returning to music when mutual friends introduced him to Oritse Williams who wanted to put together an R&B band. The pair soon met Aston Merrygold and JB Gill, and the foursome bonded and formed UFO (standing for Unique Famous Outrageous). After signing to Tracklacers, they developed their own sound called ‘Jack the Lad Swing’, a mixture of the phrase Jack the Lad and the urban music New Jack Swing. In 2008 the band auditioned for the fifth series of The X Factor but as their name was already used by another band they had to change it, ultimately deciding on JLS (the initials of Jack the Lad Swing). The
group had their highs and lows on the show but they made it to the final alongside Alexandra Burke. After a public vote, they came a close second but were quickly signed to Simon Cowell’s record company Syco. However, both Cowell and the band realised they were not suited and JLS signed to Epic Records. Their first two records, Beat Again and Everybody in Love both went to #1 as did their self-titled debut album while they won awards at the 2010 Brit Awards and the MOBO Awards. In 2010, JLS signed a record deal in the United States with Jive Records, and released “Everybody in Love” as their debut US single, but it failed to chart. “The Club Is Alive”, the lead single from their second studio album, earned the band their third numberone on the UK Singles Chart. 15
Their single “Love You More”, the official single for Children in Need in 2010, was the group’s fourth UK number one. Their single “She Makes Me Wanna” featuring Dev was their fifth UK number one. In April 2013, the band announced they were going to split after their fifth album and tour. They released their last book as a band called Forever and a Day, One Last Goodbye X in October 2013 and JLS’ last ever performance was on 22 December 2013 on the last night of their “Goodbye - The Greatest Hits Tour”. In March 2013, Humes began hosting his own radio show on the Capital network on Friday and Saturday evenings and he has since taken over The Vodafone Big Top 40 Show too. Humes made his television presenting debut in August 2013, when he co-presented the ITV daytime show This Morning Summer with his wife Rochelle Humes. In September 2013, Humes was announced as Reggie Yates’ replacement for the third series of The Voice UK and late last year he launched “The Marvin Humes

Vinny Cha$e
Rapper Vinny Cha$e was born and raised in Harlem, New York, and first got involved in the music scene when he started directing music videos and shooting hip hop documentaries on household name artists. Shooting for the likes of Lil Wayne, Juelz Santana, Cam’ron, Chris Brown and other major hip hop acts, Cha$e soon learned a lot from the industry, and from being behind the scenes Vinny naturally formed friendships with many of the artists he encountered on these videos. As he grew up in and around Manhattan, Cha$e took inspiration from many parts of the city including Soho where he found a strong appreciation for modern art, fashion, and pop culture. Building relationships with Bape founder Nigo, Jeremy Scott, and Dee & Ricky to name a few, Cha$e kept ties to the fashion world as much as he did with music. And, with nationwide tours and oversea trips, Cha$e gained a wider insight on the world around him at an early age. In 2010, Cha$e started to record music and growing up listening to hip hop and rapping stars such as Biggie, Jay-Z, and Dipset, to name a few, the musician shared a deep appreciation for wordplay and paying attention to different flows in records. Cha$e became passionate about playing a role in music in front of the lens and he got together with friends, the Super Brown Brothers (Kid Art & Cartier Court), to pursue his dream. Together they formed the label, Cheers Club and Cha$e and his team knew the importance of focus, determination, and relying on each other to get things done. The team craft music, record, produce, and shoot music videos with their own money taking pride in their independence and being the new wave of New York
artists. Cha$e occasionally also co-produces music when he’s not in the booth. The music industry is something that is both familiar and new to Cha$e and his first mixtape titled “The Plaza” combines strong melodies, clean yet edgy beats, and subtle wittiness that leaves listeners happy to hear the new mc. Many music insiders praise the quality and originality of the project and feel his importance to hip hop culture. As the new generation from New York emerges, Cha$e is next to step up to the plate. Cha$e signed with Epic and A&R Aaron Reid, son of chairman/CEO Antonio “L.A.” Reid earlier this year, after turning down an offer from Sean ‘P Diddy’ Coombs. After being friends with Reid for many years, Cha$e said he felt this was the best way to go, although the $2.5 million contract must have also helped in the decision. Cha$e is now preparing to release his second mixtape through his own Cheers Club label, ahead of his major label debut later this year but says he will not stray from the New York raspy sounds he has used before. 21

D CITY
SECON 24
Nineties house with an underground edge, SecondCity has taken the DJ world by storm with his mysterious presence and has been featured on the likes of Radio 1 with his first tune “Feel” premiering on Annie Mac’s show to great success. Splitting time between two locations, London and Chicago, SecondCity has already garnered a lot of support from fans and musicians alike, including Disclosure, Huxley and Eats Everything. Creating sounds with clear inspiration from the 90’s house world, SecondCity has quickly established himself as one of the most talked about newcomers in electronic music. After the success from his first tune, the DJ has some unmissable upcoming releases. Over the last twelve months SecondCity has quickly established himself as one of the most talked about newcomers in electronic music. After all, it is not every day that in your first year of music production you release on labels as revered as Strictly Rhythm and Saints And Sonnets and in June last year the much-hyped four track EP, ‘The Story’, was released on Huxley’s Saint’s And Sonnets imprint, and reached the dizzy heights of the Beatport Top 10 Deep House charts. This release was closely followed with the honour of remixing Miami Rockers for seminal US house label Strictly Rhythm.
Throughout 2013, SecondCity continued to show everyone that his finger was firmly on the musical pulse, as demonstrated by his and Route 94’s sublime edit of ‘Freak Like Me’. With releases such as this a mainstay in the record bags of many of the scenes major players, SecondCity soon found Huxley, Skream, Disclosure and MK all championing his 90s house sound. Radio 1 support came in the form of MistaJam, Annie Mac, Alice Levine & Phil Taggart, Skream and Zane Lowe, with fans loving the tunes he was producing and it was clear to see the high regard that SecondCity had from their peers. If 2013 turned out to be the breakthrough year for SecondCity, then 2014 is shaping up to be every bit as successful and exhilarating. Production wise, SecondCity released ‘I Enter’ on the Dirtybird BBQ compilation in February, while the anthemic, ‘I Wanna Feel’ single was released in May on Ministry Of Sound, with further studio sessions lined up with some of the most up and coming producers around. Now a highly-respected DJ and producer in his own right, the demand for SecondCity is reflected by a hectic touring schedule with bookings at prestigious parties including Skreamizm, Mint Club, Tek Project, Pyramids, Jackathon, DirtyBird, Speakerboxx, FWD, and Sleek all confirmed for 2014.
Second City will be performing at Sleek Nightclub on 21st June.

Kendrick Lamar Highly Acclaimed Rapper‌
38
Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born in Compton, California, and as a fan of music his mother gave him his birth name in honour of singer, Eddie Kendricks. As a teenager, Lamar attended Centennial High School in Compton, where he was a straight A student but music was already a passion.
In 2003, at the age of sixteen, Lamar released his first full-length project, a mixtape titled Youngest Head Nigga in Charge (Hub City Threat: Minor of the Year), under the pseudonym K-Dot. The mixtape garnered enough local attention for Lamar to secure a recording contract with Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), a newly founded local indie record label, based in Carson, California. Throughout 2006 and 2007, Lamar, and other up-and-coming West Coast rappers such as his TDE labelmate Jay Rock and Ya Boy, toured and opened for veteran West Coast rapper Game. Lamar, under his moniker K-Dot, was also featured on Game’s songs The Cypha and Cali Niggaz. After releasing two other mixtapes it was in September 2010 that Lamar released his fourth mixtape Overly Dedicated, to digital retailers under Top Dawg Entertainment, and later, he released it for free online. The song fared well and entered the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, peaking at number 72. The includes a song titled Ignorance Is Bliss, which made legendary hip hop producer Dr. Dre, want to work with Lamar, after watching the song’s music video on YouTube.
39
40
Lamar began working with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg on Dre’s Detox album and speculation became rife of Lamar signing to Dr. Dre’s record label, Aftermath Entertainment. April 11, 2011 Lamar announced the title of his next full-length project to be Section.80 and it was released in July 2011 to critical acclaim. In August 2011, while onstage with fellow West Coast rappers Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Game at a West Los Angeles concert, the three of them crowned Lamar the “New King of the West Coast. In October, Lamar partnered with Windows Phone, and crafted an original song titled Cloud 10, with producer Nosaj Thing, to promote their new product. Lamar also appeared on several high-profile albums including Game’s The R.E.D. Album, 9th Wonder’s The Wonder Years and Canadian recording artist Drake’s Grammy Award-winning Take Care, where Lamar had a solo track. In March 2012, MTV announced that Top Dawg Entertainment had closed a deal with Interscope Records and Aftermath Entertainment, marking the end of Lamar’s career as an independent artist. His major label debut studio album good kid, m.A.A.d city, was released in October 2012 and was met with critical acclaim, debuting at number two. Just nine months after its release, good kid, m.A.A.d city was certified Platinum. In September 2013, American recording artist and record producer Kanye West, announced he would be headlining his first solo tour in five years with Kendrick Lamar accompanying him along the way; and it was revealed Lamar would be the only rapper to be featured on Eminem’s eighth studio album The Marshall Mathers LP 2. Lamar had a very good year in 2013 as he won five BET Hip Hop Awards, and in November, he was named GQ’s “Rapper of the Year,” and was featured on the cover of the magazine’s “Men of the Year” issue. Earlier this year it was revealed during an interview with Billboard, that Lamar is planning to put out a new album this September. 41

La Galería
Shooting Range A great da y out – you won ’t be disappoin ted!
La Galeria Shooting Range hosting a 25 metre range, is situated in the Malaga industrial zone and is located just a few minutes drive from Malaga airport. For a pastime with a difference, the experience of shooting an array of guns makes this an unforgettable experience. The Instructor The Instructor down at La Galeria is highly qualified and experienced. He trained from the age of eight in Judo and then moved on to various other Martial arts including Boxing, Karate, Kung Fu, Aikido, Jiu Jitsu, Full Contact and Kickboxing and even becoming proficient in several of these. He fought Internationally for the UK and was very successful, only to later become “headhunted” to train in the private security industry. At a young age his father persuaded him to join the Royal 46
Marine Cadets, later transferring across to the Air Cadets as they had an on-site shooting range, so from about nine he became involved with guns of all styles, favouring hand guns. This, of course, became invaluable as his career progressed. From the early 80s until 2002, he worked as and trained private security consultants on four continents. As well as preparing professionals of all classes to work in dangerous overseas environments, such as reporters for example, reporting from war zones.
During this period and right up to today, he has also trained in and is teaching martial arts and self defence to large and small groups as well as privately. This, at the moment, is aimed especially at family groups, whom may feel threatened or at risk in some way because of their public status or personal wealth. Often one of the groups may be more enthusiastic to the idea but he finds that from a home threat point of view, it’s the family unit working together that will make a difference in a life or death situation.

At La Galeria, they teach both armed and unarmed self-defence methods, and courses can be modified to the client personal requirements. They also teach Olympic style competition shooting, as well as tactical style shooting. These start from, the most basic, through to sport professional/tactical operative. 47
My Personal Induction On entering La Galeria Shooting Range, I was greeted by their instructor, a very polite and extremely welcoming man. My first port of call was straight to the office, where I was given a form to be filled out and was briefed on the laws and conditions of the range (as for all first timers). At this time I believe I was also being assessed to make sure I was competent, sane and most of all not under the influence of any alcohol (not even a pint), so enjoy a beer afterwards. By the way it’s extremely cheap there at only 1 euro a beer in the clubhouse! Taking me through to the range I noticed that safety was made a priority, taking me through everything step-by-step so that I felt not only confident but also comfortable in the surroundings. The induction consisted of the instructor explaining the range and how to conduct myself whilst in the range. He then asked me to stand and hold the gun, most people seem to think they should hold it either like a gangster or Bruce Willis from the Die Hard films. This is not the case! I was shown the correct way to stand and then the correct way to hold the gun. Once in the correct position, I was given a loaded .22 pistol, (this is the gun you begin with) whilst under complete supervision I was then told to shoot at the target. The next stage was evaluating where my shot finished on the target. The instructor then adjusted my stance and grip and asked me to shoot again. Amazingly enough with a few small changes I could really see that his instruction had drastically improved my shot. As the induction proceeded we shot .9, .38, and .45 millimeters. I was taken through everything safely and competently and at the end of it there was a tremendous difference from the first few shots. 48
All in all it was a superb day and I fully recommend it to anyone wanting a day out with a difference and an unforgettable experience. La Galeria also have a very friendly club atmosphere often having themed club nights, and family get-togethers. They can organize all paperwork regarding the firing, owning of, and buying and selling of legal firearms. Prices start from 110â‚Ź per person for the original introduction that is compulsory. Groups of 4 or 5 are preferred, but they can accommodate groups up to 10 at one time. The introduction is about 1 hour long. Once completed tuition is from around 40 euros per hour for non members + munitions.
