Star of a hit TV show, a debut album in the charts and a forthcoming book launch, it seems Lea Michele is on top of the world, but, as we find out, the singer and actress has had many painful obstacles to overcome to get to where she is today. Born on 26th August 1986 in the Bronx, New York City, Lea Michele Sarfati was destined for great things from a very young age. Her Italian American, Roman Catholic mother and Sephardic Jewish father always wanted the best for their only child and Lea attended Stagedoor Manor, a centre for performing arts training, before being offered a place at the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at New York University – a place that she ultimately turned down to continue pursuing her career.

in abundance and subsequently, in the late 1990’s, she was given the role of Wendla in Spring Awakening’s early workshops and off-Broadway show. Praised by critics and audiences for her performance, Michele then won the role when the musical opened on Broadway in 1996. The musical was controversial due to its frank portrayal of several issues including abuse, abortion and suicide but once again on Broadway Michele and her fellow cast were praised for their portrayals.

While many other stars have slowly made their way into their industry of choice, Michele burst on the scenes at the tender age of eight when she starred on Broadway, no less, as a replacement in the role of Young Cosette in Les Miserables. This was followed shortly after with a role in the original 1998 Broadway show Ragtime in which she played Tateh’s daughter, the Little Girl.

Before the musical began, Lea was offered the role of Eponine in the Broadway production of Les Miserables but the young star decided to stay with Spring Awakening. Continuing the role for two years, Lea left in 2008 at the same time as co-star Jonathan Groff, whom she would later work with on television.

Lea quickly became known for her soprano vocal range and the amazing on-stage persona that showed her confidence and talent 8

It was early 2008, before Lea left the musical, when screenwriter, director and producer Ryan Murphy began scouting for new cast members for his brand new TV show, Glee, which would

begin airing at the end of 2008. Not content with the usual casting calls for his musical television show, Murphy spent three months on Broadway, watching the stars and making ‘lots of notes’. After seeing Lea on stage, Murphy knew she had to be involved and actually created the role of Rachel Berry specifically for her. The pilot for the show was filmed in late 2008 and aired on screen in 2009 to huge success. Lea’s portrayal of Rachel was praised by critics and fans with Denise Martin of The Los Angeles Times stating “If there’s any justice in the world, Lea Michele will win a Golden Globe and an Emmy for playing Rachel”. The show itself became a hit overnight; making stars of all the initial 12 main cast members including Lea and it was a favourite of both adults and children due to the nature of the show and the running themes within it. Still running, the show is now in its fifth series and the cast will soon begin to shoot the sixth and final series, which will air next year. The show has tackled many tough subjects including bullying, teen pregnancy, illness but nothing pulled the cast together more than the sudden and untimely death of fellow cast member Cory Monteith. Monteith’s death, from a heroin overdose, was all the more harrowing for Michele as she and Monteith had been dating for some time and there were rumours of an engagement between the two. The cast members including close friend Kate Hudson and Jonathan Groff rallied around Lea and the show’s creator Ryan Murphy disclosed shortly after his death that the show would feature a tribute episode to the actor in the third episode of the fifth season which would also explain his character’s death.

It took time for Lea to overcome the emotional trauma of Monteith’s death but in an interview earlier this year, the star said “At the start, it’s hard because you’re so physically and mentally shocked and damaged, but after a while you get tired of physically feeling so horrendous, so I started doing yoga, which really helped. Then gradually your mind catches up with your body.” 9

To help with her recovery of his death, Lea also threw herself into work and recorded the fifth series of Glee alongside writing and recording her debut album. Her debut single, Cannonball, was released in December last year and was chosen as the lead single because it shown to Lea just a month after Monteith’s death and she described how it perfectly encapsulated her feelings at that particular time. Another song on the album, If You Say So, was dedicated to Monteith and portrays their love for each other and how she felt after his death. Released just last month, the album itself has done well, debuting at number 4 on the US Billboard charts. Not content with topping both the music and television charts Lea has also starred in films New Year’s Eve and Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return and this month also releases her debut book which will be part memoir, part how-to book. Entitled Brunette Ambition, the book has been described as a practical and inspirational guide on all aspects of life and is about living life to the fullest, no matter what it throws at you. It’s clear that whatever Lea turns her attention to, she is destined to succeed and make her mark in the world and can influence others with her style and tenacity in life. She has worked hard to create a career for herself despite many obstacles that could easily have pushed her down; she is an inspiration to us all.

Glamorous parties, beaches filled with fake tans and bikini clad girls, champagne spray parties, fast cars, and dare I say it‌. TOWIE! These are the things that most people would associate with Marbella and Puerto Banus these days, especially in the height of the summer. However, Marbella was once the playground of some very famous stars and years ago they would flock to the opulent Marbella Club Hotel as if their life depended on it. Celebrating its 60th birthday this year, the hotel has played host to actors including the legendary Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn who liked the Hollywood feel of the place and the fact that it was so close to London.

14

In recent years we have seen the likes of Eva Longoria and even Michelle Obama who stayed at the prestigious Hotel Villa Padierna, and you might be surprised to learn of some other very famous stars that are also closely associated with our little slice of paradise. George Clooney is said to have bought a house in Marbella’s upmarket Sierra Blanca last year while many have seen Antonio Banderos and Melanie Griffith out and about in the town close to their stylish mansion. Many of us are familiar with the extravagant urbanisation that is La Zagaleta but it may amaze you to hear that Hugh Grant, Rod Stewart, Sting and controversial Russian president Vladimir Putin reportedly all have homes there. Not all celebrities are keen to stick within the small radius of Marbella and Banus however and with some of Spain’s most expensive real estate, it’s no wonder that Sotogrande has seen the likes of Mariah Carey, the Duchess of York and even Princes William and Harry who played polo tournaments on their visit.

Ronda also has its appealing qualities and was put very much on the map by Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles during their well-documented time living in the town, while in recent years the area has seen the likes of British Prime Minister David Cameron, and DJ Fatboy Slim with his wife Zoe Ball.

Back towards the coast, you will find the spot that once held famous Casa Malibu, the villa made famous by its owner Sean Connery. After much controversy surrounding the villa, Sean sold the villa in 1999 and it was demolished to make room for luxury apartments. Further along the coast and far up into the hills sits a large estate that is home to one of Spain’s most famous crooners – Julio Iglesias; and travelling along to Mijas you may come across the avocado farm owned by Anthony Warrell Thompson.

The uber-famous, the Z listers and everyone in between all love Marbella as both a place to vacation and as somewhere to set up home, so next time you move house or get new neighbours, you might just be surprised at who they are.

La Galería Shooting Range A great day out or why not become a member La Galeria Shooting Range hosting a 25 meter range, is situated in the Malaga industrial zone and is located just a few minutes drive from Malaga airport. For a past time with a difference the experience of shooting an array of guns makes this an unforgettable experience.

The Instructor The Instructor down at La Galeria is highly qualified and experienced. He trained from the age of eight in Judo and then moved on to various other Martial arts including Boxing, Karate, Kung Fu, Aikido, Jiu Jitsu, Full Contact and Kickboxing and even becoming proficient in several of these. He fought Internationally for the UK and was very successful, only to later become “headhunted” to train in the private security industry. At a young age his father persuaded him to join the Royal Marine Cadets, later transferring across to the Air Cadets as they had an on sight shooting range, so from about nine he became involved with guns of all styles, favouring 24

Hand guns. This, of course, became invaluable as his career progressed. From the early 80s until 2002, he worked as and trained private security consultants on four continents. As well as preparing professionals of all classes to work in dangerous overseas environments, such as reporters for example, reporting from war zones. During this period right up to today, he has also trained in and is teaching martial arts and self defense to large and small groups as well as privately. This, at the moment, is aimed, especially at family groups, whom may feel threatened or at risk in some way because of their public status or

personal wealth. Often one of the groups may be more enthusiastic to the idea but he finds that from a home threat point of view, it’s the family unit working together that will make a difference in a life or death situation. At La Galeria, they teach both armed and unarmed self-defense methods, and courses can be modified to the client personal requirements. They also teach Olympic style competition shooting, as well as tactical style shooting. These start from, the most basic, through to sport professional/tactical operative.

My Personal Induction On entering La Galeria Shooting Range, I was greeted by their instructor, a very polite and extremely welcoming man. My first port of call was straight to the office, (as all first timers must do) where I was given a form to be filled out and briefed on the laws and conditions of the range. At this time I believe I was also being assessed to make sure I was competent, sane and most of all not under the influence of any alcohol (not even a pint), so enjoy a beer afterwards. By the way it’s extremely cheap there at only 1 euro a beer in the clubhouse! Taking me through to the range I noticed that safety was made a priority, taking me through everything step by step so that I felt not only confident but also comfortable in the surroundings. The induction consisted of the instructor explaining the range and how to conduct myself whilst in the range. He then asked me to stand and hold the gun as most people seem to hold it either like a gangster or Bruce Willis from the Die Hard films. This is not the case! I was then shown the correct way to stand and then the correct way to hold the gun. Once in the correct position, I was given a loaded .22 pistol, (this is the gun you begin with) while under complete supervision I was then told to shoot at the target. The next stage was evaluating where my shot finished on the target. The instructor then adjusted my stance and grip and asked me to shoot again. Amazingly enough with a few small changes I could really see that his instruction had drastically improved my shot. As the induction proceeded we shot .9, .38, and .45 millimeters. I was taken through everything safely and competently and at the end of it there was a tremendous difference from the first few shots. All in all it was a superb day and I fully recommend it to anyone wanting a day out with a difference and an unforgettable experience. 26

Celebrity Gossip

Cameron Diaz

will not be having children We have all probably wondered when we would hear the news that Cameron Diaz is settling down and pregnant with her first child. It looks safe to say we won’t be seeing Cameron with a baby bump, ever. She has opened up about her decision not to have children, and says she feels blessed to have so many friends children in her life and has no regrets. Cameron, who stars in the upcoming movie The Other Woman, has dated several rather eligible batchelors in her time but has defended her decision not to start a family of her own. Cameron told The Telegraph, “I’ve never said never to anything in life. If I wanted kids, at any point in life, I would have them. But I’m certain that if at any point I wanted a child, that child would find its way into my life, whether through adoption, or through being in a relationship with somebody who has a child.” Cameron also said she wasn’t the only one in her circle of friends not to have popped out another human. She said, “I also, by the way, have a lot of girl friends who don’t have children. It’s not like I’m the spinster who didn’t have a child. I just didn’t do that in life, and I’m OK with that. I know the choices I made.” 28

Peaches Geldof’s home up for sale Peaches Geldof’s husband Thomas Cohen is reportedly planning to sell the countryside home where she died. The S.C.U.M rocker Cohen is too distraught to return to their home in Wrotham, Kent, where the 25-year-old star’s body was discovered on April 7, and wants to put the property on the market once the police have finished their investigation. Sources say “Tom has said that he can’t return to the house, he wants to immediately sell the place and move. “It is just too heartbreaking for him there, he is

in bits and can’t bear to live in the place where his beloved wife died. He has some very happy memories of living there with Peaches and bringing up their babies but it’s so, so painful for him to think about living there now”. Tom can’t believe he is a widower, with two young kids, at 23. It’s heartbreaking to see.

Surgery to look like Jennifer Lawrence

Drew Barrymore gives birth to second child

For most of us, celebrity obsession stops at catching glimpses of certain celebs in gossip magazines and the occasional binge on our favourite films. But for one Houston woman this just isn’t enough. 30-year-old mother of one, Kitty has spent $25,000 on plastic surgery to look like her idol, Jennifer Lawrence. Going under the knife for six hours, Kitty endured six painful operations, including a fat graft, lipo-suction and a nose job. Now she thinks she looks like just like the 23-year-old Hollywood starlet who she believes has a “spunky and fun personality” and a “banging body.” Kitty paid for the surgery, which left her bruised for weeks, with a “me-fund” she had saved up from a previous job - and she thinks it was entirely worth the splurge. Kitty’s surgeon Dr. Franklin Rose, has offered hundreds of women his expert opinion on carving them into the stars and he is thrilled with the results. “I turn away patients all the time,” he told ABC News, “and after evaluating 14,000 to 15,000 new consultations by this point in my career, you can tell very quickly, within a matter of a minute, if a patient is well adjusted or not well adjusted.” If this becomes an ongoing trend, god only knows what the world will end up looking like!

Drew Barrymore has given birth to her second child, daughter Frankie Barrymore Kopelman. The 39-year-old actress and her husband Will Kopelman, 36, have another daughter Olive, 19 months. The couple said in a statement: “Olive has a new little sister, and everyone is healthy and happy!” Barrymore said earlier this month that becoming a parent was the greatest thing she had done. Her latest film, out on May 23, is familyfriendly comedy Blended, which co-stars Adam Sandler. Her recent photo book, Find It In Everything, was dedicated to daughter Olive. 31

Katherine Jenkins getting married Classical music star Katherine Jenkins has announced that she is to marry boyfriend Andrew Levitas. Jenkins tweeted: “ Thank you for all your lovely wishes of congratulations. They mean so much to us.” Mr Levitas, 36, is a filmmaker, fine artist and producer, who also teaches at New York University. The 33-year-old Welsh mezzosoprano was seen with Mr Levitas when he joined her as she collected her OBE from the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace. Jenkins was previously engaged to former Blue Peter presenter Gethin

Jones in 2011. Katherine Jenkins allegedly split with fiancé Gethin Jones after their relationship was damaged by “very demanding goals”. Sources have now claimed that the pair grew apart as Jenkins put off the wedding and their plans to have children in order to concentrate on her career. At the time she desperately wanted to establish herself as a bona fide international star, particularly in America. She is due to release an album later this year which promises to return to the classical repertoire she pursued earlier in her career.

Lindsay Lohan dating married man Lindsay Lohan reportedly admitted her married lover flew her by private jet to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival earlier last month while allegedly under the influence of vodka and Ecstasy. Speaking about her mystery boyfriend, she reportedly told sources, Oh this guy I’m seeing sent me a jet because he wants to see me...but he’s married with kids.” A US publication chronicled the ‘Mean Girl’ star’s trip to the first weekend of the annual festival in Indio, California and the reporter, identified only as The Kurator, claimed that the troubled starlet, who previously admitted she had slipped up and had “a glass of wine” since leaving rehab for the sixth time last summer, was openly drinking and using drugs throughout the weekend. He wrote: “The last time I saw Lindsay would be as she made her way into the second day of the Coachella festival with a vodka filled Evian bottle in hand and accompanied by her sister Ali, and brothers Cody and Michael.” But he said Lindsay dismissed speculation she is an addict and said: “I’m not an alcoholic.” 32

Liam Neeson upsets animal rights activists Animal rights activists protesting outside Liam Neeson’s home say they do not agree with him that New York’s carriage horses should keep working. 50 demonstrators filled the pavement in front of his Manhattan apartment building holding signs with such slogans as: “Liam Neeson: Stop Supporting Cruelty!”They say it is inhumane for the horses to be subjected to traffic, pollution and possible accidents. The 61-year-old actor is a vocal supporter of the city’s carriage horse industry. Mayor Bill de Blasio has pledged to ban the horse-drawn carriages and replace them with electric vintage-style cars, commissioned by a group called NYCLASS.

Make-up for the

beach and the bar Highlight your best facial features to achieve a natural glow on the beach, and transform to a stunning look for the beach bar! While we understand that for some ladies, leaving the house without a stitch of make-up is like walking out with no clothes on, putting on a full face of make-up for the beach is a little extreme. While false eyelashes and bright red lipstick might look fantastic at night, when it comes to the beach there are some simple make-up tricks that will keep your need for make-up intact, but will make it look like you are almost makeup free. The trick is to highlight your best facial features and look natural but healthy and glowing. Swipe on a tinted moisturizer with SPF to cover up any redness instead of choosing a heavy foundation, and go for natural colours on your eyes and lips — pink, peach, gold, and bronze offset a summery skin tone. Also avoid anything too sticky or creamy, as it will attract sand and break down faster in the sun.

Heading straight to the bar after the beach? Have no fear! With our tips you can look stunning as you go from seashore to dance floor… uC lean your face of all pre-existing make-up with a face wipe. You need to get off all the sunscreen and oils or you’ll be slick (and not in a good way) all night, try Avon Clearskin Deep Clean Cleansing Cloths. u I f your skin’s a little blotchy after your day outdoors, even out your complexion in one step with a dual-finish powder compact. Try Mac Select Sheer / Loose. u Since you wore sunscreen all day, put a flattering flush in your cheeks with a petal pink powder blush. Try Bobbi Brown Essentials Blush in Soft Pink. u Line and fill lips with a neutral liner, then coat with a glistening rose gloss. Try Max Factor Color Perfection Luxe Lipgloss. u Brush your brows into place with a tinted brow gel, when you have beautiful, defined brows, everything else falls into place. Try Benefit Gimme Brow Gel. u Then coat lashes with L’Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes.

Can frozen lemon

CURE CANCER?

The Institute of Health Sciences in Baltimore claims that frozen lemon is a “miraculous product” that can kill cancer cells, is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy, and is “a proven remedy against cancers of all types”. Lemon’s peels have an enormous amount of health benefits, including the ability to boost your immune system; lower cholesterol and, even, help to prevent cancer. Often overlooked, lemon peels offer antimicrobial protection against bacterial (and fungal) infections – helping the body to eliminate internal parasites and worms. Scientists reveal that phytonutrients, found in nature, can outperform chemotherapy without the risk of harming the body. We know lemon peels have some compounds that trigger the immune system and have demonstrated its substances can mitigate certain ailments. For example, modified citrus pectin (MCP) which comes from the pulp and rinds of citrus fruits has been altered to produce shorter sugar chains – making it more easily absorbed by the digestive system and bloodstream. MCP has been found to inhibit the spread of prostate, breast, and skin cancer to other organs.

Why do citrus fruits have so many health benefits? Limonoids are chemicals, which are found in citrus peels and are responsible for the bitter taste. Limonoids are capable of slowing cancer cell growth and inducing apoptosis (cell suicide). This research was conducted in labs, which have shown that it worked in vitro and on animals. 48

Lemons contain 22 anti-cancer compounds, including limonene, citrus pectin and flavonol glycosides – which stop cell division in cancer cells. According to The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) of Australia, citrus fruits pack a powerful punch – reducing the risk of some cancers by 50 percent. These scientists report that citrus fruits are most protective against stomach, mouth, larynx and pharynx cancers.

What are the uses for frozen lemon? Once the lemon is frozen, get your grater, and shred the whole lemon (no need to peel it) and sprinkle it on top of your foods. Sprinkle it to your vegetable salad, ice cream, soup, cereals, noodles, spaghetti sauce, rice, fish dishes, wine…. the list is endless. All of the foods will unexpectedly have a wonderful taste, something that you may have never tasted before.

e r o f be bedmee ttiim

THE

Worst thing s ttooeeaatt

It’s not bad to eat before bedtime since everybody does it, but when it comes to eating late, you should think smart. There are things that you should avoid eating before going to bed. If you eat these things before bed, you can forget about having an amazing figure, because evening food can easily add unnecessary body fat, lead to health problems and also be the cause of interrupting your sleep. If you want to avoid this nightmare, take a look at the list of the things you should never consume before bedtime.

Alcohol

Alcohol can lead to dehydration and disrupt the restorative sleep functions. That’s why, next time you are dreaming about a long-lasting and great sleep, do not drink before going to bed.

Chocolate

Unfortunately, chocolate does not only contain a higher amount of fat and sugar than any other evening snacks, but it also has caffeine. Plus, it’s rich in stimulants like theobromine that is famous for accelerating your pulse. Consequently, chocolate can disrupt your sleep and keep you up the whole night. People who do not sleep much usually suffer from enlarged levels of cortisol, which can breakdown the muscle tissue.

Ice cream

It’s true that ice cream has actually a double effect. First of all, it can be the best food to comfort you but still the worst one to eat when going to sleep. Ice cream 50

contains a small amount of fat and is also rich in sugar that will really disrupt your sleep. The taste is undoubtedly comforting, but the results are absolutely awful.

Crisps

You all probably know that chips are such kind of food that is too difficult to refuse eating. Do not eat them in the evening while watching TV, or working on the computer, etc. You know it is easy to forget about the time and to eat a lot of it. Much healthier is to snack on some carrots and perhaps a little bit of almonds. You will still have a crunchy food and will be filled up quickly thanks to the fibre.

Red meat

It’s known that red meat contains fats and proteins, and it digests much longer than any other foods. Plus, it will keep your stomach working the entire night, which can lead to discomfort and even pain. If you want to have a great deep sleep, it is vital to keep your body at peace. It means avoid eating red meat before bedtime.

Pizza

We always say to ourselves that one little piece is not the end of the world, but eat in fact more than one. Pizza has a large amount of calories to indulge in right when preparing to sleep. Tomato sauce has too much acidity, which can lead to acid reflux, and the oily toppings can be the cause of heartburn. I am sure you do not want to wake up because of that at night! Not to mention the calories!

Celery

52

You are probably thinking, Celery? Of course! It can seem a bit strange, but do not eat celery at all costs when going to bed if you want to have a long and nice sleep. Do you know that celery is a natural diuretic, and it raises the rate of urination? Restrain yourself from having celery in the evening, unless you are ready to run to the bathroom the whole night!

Pasta is a fast and simple snack for people who want to quench the desire before sleep, but at the same time it is forbidden evening food. Pasta loaded with carbohydrates is one of the most calorie-dense carbohydrate sources of all. All these calories accumulate mostly around the waist.

Fruit

Bread

When you think you are too thin, eat bread every evening, but if you want to avoid weight gain, restrain yourself from eating this on an evening. Bread is rich in carbohydrates that lead to weight gain and make your body long for more carbs in the future, making an unpleasant cycle. Never have some tasty buns at night to sleep better. Think about eating a little bowl of hot oats instead. It’s still a source of carbs, but will not have the same effect like bread will.

Pasta

Most people think it’s a good idea to eat fruit before bed. But a very large amount of it, though, contains lots of sugar that causes gas the whole night since it ferments on top of other foods in the bowel. You won’t only have cramping, but it’s also very hard on your digestion.

Cereal Coffee or coffee flavoured foods

A cup of coffee, coffee flavoured sweets, coffee ice cream, or something including coffee before sleep will definitely keep you up. But if you managed to fall asleep somehow, you will be sure to wake up at night due to the caffeine fluctuations in your body. Do not drink coffee in the evening at any cost.

One more thing you shouldn’t eat at night if you want to keep your figure in tip top shape is cereal. Many cereals are full of sugar. Even those you think may look like a healthy alternative with their dried fruits aren’t. They are sugar which equals fat if not burned. Never eat cereal before sleep. If you really really enjoy your cereal have it in the morning but don’t exceed a single portion.

Triceps Workout

1

Whilst holding EZ Curl Bar with a pronated grip (palms facing forward), lie on your back on a flat bench. Extend your arms out to a vertical position over your head. Note: Keep your elbows in at all times.

Work your triceps with these 4 excersises

Perform 4 sets of each exercise, each with 8-12 reps.

As you inhale, lower the bar by bending your elbows and keeping your upper arms stationary. Keep lowering the bar until it just passes your forehead. As you exhale, bring the bar back up to the start position by pushing it up in a semi-circular motion until your arms are straight. Contract the triceps hard at the top of the movement for a second. Note: Only your forearms should move, upper arms should remain stationary at all times.

2

Triceps Pushdowns

Remember...

When you are doing any workout, it is important to warm-up before you start, this will help prevent injury. After your excersize, you should also stretch and warm-down.

54

EZ Curl Bar Triceps Extensions

Fasten a rope attachment to a high pulley and hold with palms facing each other. Stand with a straight torso but with a small inclination forward. Bring your upper arms close to the side of your body.

Using your triceps, bring each end of the rope to the outside of your thighs. Only your forearms should move. Exhale as you perform this movement. Your arms should now be fully extended with palms facing the floor.

After holding for a second, at the contracted position, slowly bring the rope back up to the starting point. Breathe in as you perform this step.

3

Triceps Overhead Extensions

Attach a rope to the pulley and select an appropriate weight. Position your hands behind your head with your elbows bent and pointing forwards. Get into a forward leaning stance to create stability.

Straighten your elbows whilst keeping your upper arms in the same position. Extend your arms until your hands are straight out in front your head. Contract your triceps at the top of the movement, and then slowly bend your elbows back again, lowering the weight back to the start position.

4

One-Arm Triceps Extensions

With one hand, grasp a singlehandle attached to the high-cable pulley using a supinated (palms facing up) grip. You should be standing directly in front of the weight stack.

Get into a wellbalanced stance, with one leg in front of the other. Pull the handle down so that your upper arm and elbow are locked in to the side of your body.

NEXT MONTH

CROSS

Vegetarians vs Meat Eaters Who are Healthiest? Despite leading healthier lifestyles and drinking less than meat eaters, a study has revealed that vegetarians are less healthy and happier on average. The study conducted by the Medical University of Graz in Austria defined the vegetarian diet as a low consumption of saturated fat and cholesterol, due to a higher intake of fruits, vegetables and wholegrain foods. They then used data from the Austrian Health Interview Survey comparing the dietary habits and lifestyles between meat-eaters and vegetarians. What they found was that vegetarians were less likely to go to the doctor for check-ups and vaccines, and were more prone to allergies and cancer. This is bound to do nothing to help the already strained relationship between veggies and omnivores, where one feels persecuted while the other thinks non meat-eaters are weirdos. 57

Fitness Tips by Franky Balboa

1. Nutrition basics

Ask almost every personal trainer and they’ll tell you that regardless of your training goals, healthy eating is the backbone. Food is what fuels your body and without proper nutrition through quality foods, you’re likely to stall. As a result, if possible eat organic foods and above all maintain a balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, complex carbs, proteins and fats including fish oil and flax seeds.

2. Eat more

Eating only 3 daily meals? About half the people I deal with aren’t losing weight because they don’t eat enough. My advice is to eat 5 times a day about every 3 hours to stimulate the metabolism, and to include 2 small meals in between the 3 main meals. As the activity level most likely decreases throughout the day, eat less as the day goes on.

3. Portion control

As you’ll be eating more often, paying attention to portion size is extremely important. Make sure a chicken breast or steak is no larger then the palm of your hand, and portion of spaghetti, pasta or rice no bigger than your fist. Use small plates and bowls because it has been proven that people serve themselves 20 to 40 per cent more food when they’re using bigger plates.

4. Muscle-building basics

First of all increase your calorie and complete protein intake, then when you enter the gym, focus on your form. Perform compound movements and train with weights around 4 times a week on average. Never underestimate the importance of rest — remember muscle tissue grows when you give your body time to relax and recover following your workouts.

5. Use the right weights

Wondering how to get the most out of lifting weights? If you are training by time rather than reps, you need to use weights with which you can perform sets for 30-40 seconds, as it is the time under tension that causes muscle to grow. If you can’t do the reps for more than 20 seconds constantly, you will know that the weight is too heavy.

Purple living

This month we are concentrating on your living room and want to show you two ways in which you can redesign the area where you spend a lot of your time. We’ll show you how to completely contemporize your room with clean lines and modern touches and secondly we’ve chosen this year’s hottest colour, which will transform your living space. When redesigning and restyling a room in your house, it’s important to think about the surroundings and colours that you have in other rooms. However, a great way to incorporate your own style but keep the room in sync with the rest of the house is to choose a modern style - contemporary lines and neutral colours are a good way to spruce up any living room. The images we have chosen here are a great example and really show how it can work in any home. The secret is out…. Ok so it may have been out a while but this season’s top design colour is purple and if you love bright radiant colours then any shade of this luminous hue will provide an excellent backdrop to any room. Whether you want to use it as the main colour to the room with touches on every piece of furniture and walls, or simply use it for a single piece of furniture, it will transform the room and give it that much needed boost of colour.

BOXER GTS

76

The two most powerful and fastest mid-engine sports models from Porsche are ready and raring to go: with uprated engines and excellent PASM chassis the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS set new benchmarks for sportiness in their segment. The independent front and a modified rear end, blackened bi-xenon headlights - with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) as standard - and exterior lettering in silky black gloss are subtle yet unmistakable features of the new top models. The name says it all: at Porsche “GTS” stands for Gran Turismo Sport and has promised outstanding Porsche performance ever since the legendary 904 Carrera GTS dating back to 1963. With the new two-seaters Porsche is renewing its commitment to authentic sports cars for both the racetrack and everyday use. The new models will be launched from May 2014. With country-specific equipment and VAT the Boxster GTS costs €69,949 and the Cayman GTS costs €73,757 in Germany.

Sport – Football

Premiership – Crunch Time So it comes down to this. 3 teams fighting for the title, 4 teams fighting for the final Champions League place and 3 teams probably doomed for the drop. With only 2 more weekends here in May then all can still be won or lost. It’s been a terrific season so far with a lot of good attacking football played. Manchester City and Liverpool have probably played the best football as Chelsea haven’t been able to get the best out of their 3 strikers Eto’o, Torres and Ba.

Brendan Rodgers

Manchester and Chelsea were always expected to vie for the league title because of the amount of money they’ve spent, Liverpool however have surprised everyone with their attacking football and their challenge for the title. Arsenal have been extremely unlucky with injuries to about 5 key players and this has left them struggling for a Champions League place, I would still be surprised if Wenger didn’t stay for at least another season.

Arsene Wenger

Everton have surprised many (including me) with their free flowing football and Martinez had completely transformed the club, 78

Jose Mourinho

Manuel Pellegrini

they look like they can get a Europe League place at the very least.

this season and they’re not shy in sacking underachieving managers at their American Football club either. Moyes isn’t up to the job and if they allow him to spend a lot of money on the wrong players then United may not recover for a very long time.

Roberto Martinez

Spurs are still in the running as well for a Europa League spot despite them panicking by sacking Andre Villa Boas, after he spent nearly 100 million on players who seem very over priced. The chances though of Tim Sherwood being boss next season are remote however and Louis Van Gaal is the current tip to takeover. And what can you say about the fall of Manchester United? Same players but no where near the same results. I’ll be amazed if Moyes remains in the job in the summer, as the owners the Glazer’s have lost some serious money

David Moyes

Down in the relegation zone Fulham, Sunderland and Cardiff all look favourites for the drop, being stranded some 5 points away from safety with 6 games to go. Norwich may get pulled into the dogfight because they have very tough games to finish with. All in all a top season of good football and plenty of surprises. Roll on the next one.

THE BIG GAMES

THE PREMIERSHIP Saturday 3rd May

FIXTURES & PREDICTIONS

Sunday 4th May

WEST HAM v TOTTENHAM

ARSENAL v WEST BROM

MAN UTD v SUNDERLAND United should win this one surely? Sunderland look dead and buried but that desperation may just cause an upset. Not today though with United winning 3-0.

STOKE CITY v FULHAM Earlier in the season Stoke would have easily put Fulham to the sword but with Fulham’s new manager Magath turning things around, Fulham have a chance at survival and will make it difficult. 1-1 draw.

EVERTON v MANCHESTER CITY Roberto Martinez

This should be a superb game as both teams like to play. Everton have been strong at home and are themselves fighting for a Champions League place, while City are going for the title. This is a really big banana skin for City and they can certainly drop points here. I’ll go for a 1-1 honours even.

NEWCASTLE v CARDIFF Newcastle has nothing to play for and Cardiff have everything to play for. Newcastle will want to put on a bit of a show as this is the last home game of the season and Cardiff have a chance at survival. 1-1 draw. 80

Arsenal’s last home game against a struggling West Brom side. West Brom are probably more or less safe but they certainly won’t get any joy from playing here at the Emirates. Arsenal will put on a show and I’ll go for a 3-0 scoreline.

Arsene Wenger

Tricky game for Spurs who are vying for a Europe League spot. West Ham are always up for the London derbies and I think they’ll probably edge this one 1-0 to the Hammers.

CHELSEA v NORWICH Norwich have got probably the hardest run in of all the teams fighting relegation while Chelsea have got the easiest run in going for the title. Norwich have no chance here and this will probably be a drubbing by Chelsea in the end, which will be all important in the goal difference stakes if the title comes down to the wire. 4-0 to Chelsea.

Monday 5th May

CRYSTAL PALACE v LIVERPOOL Palace should be safe by now so that at least is in Liverpool’s favour. Trips to London can be tricky for Liverpool and their record isn’t that good against Palace, but if they’re to win the title then they have to win here which they will. 0-1 to Liverpool.

Tuesday 6th May

MANCHESTER UTD v HULL CITY United will want to win as this is their last game at Old Trafford this season. Whether Moyes will be seen again in the managerial role is another thing. He’s way out of his depth but if United win here they can probably end up 6th. Oh how the might have fallen. 2-1 to United.

O O RD N E LI R N E

Wednesday 7th May

MAN CITY v ASTON VILLA A must win for City here at home and with Villa pretty much safe, City should win with ease. At least 3-0 to City.

SUNDERLAND v WEST BROM

Gus Poyet

A relegation six pointer and both teams in peril a win will make all the difference in the end. West Brom are the better team but Sunderland are at home, both teams will go for it and that will probably end up in a draw 1-1.

Sunday 11th May

Jose Mourinho

CARDIFF v CHELSEA If Chelsea are still in the title hunt, then they can pretty much count on 3 points in this game. Cardiff will play for pride but it still won’t be enough to stop Chelsea. 0-2 to Chelsea.

HULL CITY v EVERTON Hull have been hard to beat at their place and if Everton still have hopes of a Champions League place then they’ll have to grind out a result here. Hull have done well in the cups and are safe in the league though, so they have little to play for here and I think Everton will win in the end. 0-2 to Everton.

The incredible natural male enhancement tablets SPECIAL OFFERS

MANCHESTER CITY v WEST HAM

Manuel Pellegrini

There are plenty of Liverpool old boys playing for West Ham and Nolan is a lifelong Liverpool supporter, so they may be up to try and spoil Manchester City’s party. Man City though will want to win the league and if they can do so here at home, then all the sweeter. City to edge it 1-0.

SOUTHAMPTON v MAN UTD

TOTENHAM v ASTON VILLA Spurs should win this fairly easily and provide some entertainment for their fans. Spurs promised much at the start of the season, with a Champions League place as the minimum result. If Spurs get a good manager in then they can certainly challenge again next season and getting a great manager might even get the best out of the overpriced players that they’ve bought. 3-0 to Spurs.

FULHAM v CRYSTAL PALACE Fulham have improved but it might be too little too late, if Fulham win here they might survive but Palace will want to win though and I can see them canceling each other out. 1-1 draw.

If Liverpool are still in the running for the title then they’ll certainly win here. Newcastle have been poor since selling their midfield general Cabaye to Paris St Germain and they seriously need a replacement in the summer. Anfield will be deafening and I think Newcastle will crumble. 4-0 to Liverpool. Brendan Rodgers

Southampton have done pretty well this season overall but whether they’ll be able to keep hold of the majority of their decent players is open to doubt. The new female owner holds no interest in football and will want to get top dollar for the stars like Shaw, Lallana and Rodriguez. Manchester United might also be interested in buying quite a few and so the Southampton players will want to strut their stuff here today and most of the United players are already thinking about their new careers in pastures new. Southampton to edge it and sum up Manchester United’s miserable season. 1-0 to Southampton.

LIVERPOOL v NEWCASTLE

NORWICH v ARSENAL Norwich are threatened with relegation then they’ll have to get a point or more against Arsenal. Arsenal will be fighting for the Champions league place and will certainly not want to drop any points. Arsenal to win 0-2.

SUNDERLAND v SWANSEA Sunderland will probably be relegated by now but if they’re not then they could get a useful 3 points here against a safe and vaguely demoralised Swansea. 1-0 to Sunderland.

WEST BROM v STOKE CITY West Brom might need the points and they’ll be up for a fight for survival against an already safe Stoke side. 1-0 to West Brom.

The FA Cup Final

82

After 2 exciting semi finals both teams just about got through. Arsenal scraping by Wigan on penalties and Hull overcoming a spirited Sheffield United side. Arsenal’s form has been woeful of late but you’d have to make them favourites for this final, surely? Hull City will be happy to be seen as the underdogs and with things tense at Arsenal for them to win something, Hull might take advantage. Arsenal should be the better side and win here but I’ll still go for Hull to win. Steve Bruce

Arsene Wenger

Saturday 17th May Arsenal v Hull City
