Kesha Rose Sebert was born in March 1987 in Los Angeles, California to a single mother, Patricia Rose ‘Pebe’ Sebert, who is of German and Hungarian descent, and was a singer-songwriter that struggled financially while trying to support Kesha and her brothers Lagan and Louie. When she was small, Kesha’s mother used to take her to her own performances rather than pay for a babysitter and was even known to have Kesha onstage with her. Pebe & Kesha
In 1991, Kesha and her family moved to Nashville, Tennessee after Pebe secured a publishing deal for her songwriting. While in Nashville, Kesha attended Brentwood school which she has since referred to as the Bible Belt and the singer has claimed that she did not fit in at school. Playing the trumpet and later the saxophone in her marching band, Kesha has since described herself as a diligent student but says that her homemade purple velvet trousers and purple hair did not overly endear her to the other students. Kesha also attended songwriting classes in Nashville and was also taught how to write by Pebe; with the pair often writing together when Kesha returned home from school. It was during this time that Pebe would take Kesha into the studio with her and it was here that she noticed Kesha’s vocal talent, encouraging her to sing when they were there. Kesha and Lagan soon formed a band and the young singer began recording demos in her mother’s studio which Pebe would give to
people she knew in the music industry. Kesha and Pebe co-wrote the song Stephen together when Kesha was 16 and Kesha then tracked down David Gamson, a producer that she admired, from Scritti Politti who agreed to produce the song. Dropping out of school at 17, Kesha was convinced by renowned producers Dr. Luke and Max Martin to return to Los Angeles to pursue a music career, and earned her GED much later. Luke and Martin had received one of Kesha’s demos from Samantha Cox, senior director of writer/ publisher relations at Broadcast Music Incorporated, and were impressed with Luke later stating that it was Kesha’s ad lib rapping that really caught his attention.
9
10
Around this time, Pebe saw an advert for reality series, The Simple Life, who were looking for an “eccentric” family to host Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie on one of their jaunts – the family fit the bill and the episode aired in 2005. Kesha later sang background vocals for Paris Hilton’s single, Nothing in This World. Later that year at age 18, Kesha was signed to Dr. Luke’s label, Kemosabe Entertainment, and his music publishing company, Prescription Songs. However, after the producer became preoccupied with other projects including pop star Kelly Clarkson’s album, Breakaway, Kesha signed with David Sonenberg’s management company, DAS Communications Inc., in 2006. She worked with several writers and producers while at the company and it was during this time that she adopted the dollar sign in her name while struggling to get by as an ironic gesture. Kesha appeared in the video for her friend, pop singer Katy Perry’s
single “I Kissed a Girl”, and sang background vocals for the Dr. Lukeproduced song, “Lace and Leather” by pop singer Britney Spears in 2008 and in the September of that year, she terminated her contract with DAS, reuniting with Dr. Luke.
The singer gained exposure in early 2009 after appearing on rapper Flo Rida’s number one single, “Right Round”. The collaboration happened by accident; she had walked into a recording session for the song with Flo Rida and Dr. Luke and Flo Rida wanted a female voice for the song so Dr. Luke suggested Kesha. The rapper and singer liked the end result so much that they did two more tracks. However, she is not credited for her feature on the US release of “Right Round” and did not collect any money for the part. In 2009, Kesha signed a multialbum deal with RCA Records and having spent the previous six years working on material for her debut album, she began putting finishing touches to it with Luke and Max Martin. Animal was released in January 2010 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and it was certified platinum in the US and sold two million albums worldwide by September of that year. The lead single of the album, Tik Tok, broke the record in the United States for the highest single
11
week sales, and it spent nine weeks at number one, becoming the longest running number one by a female artist on her debut single since Debby Boone in 1977. As of 2013, Tik Tok has sold about 14 million copies, becoming the most sold single in history by a female solo artist.
In February 2011, Kesha embarked on her first headlining world tour, Get Sleazy which was expanded with a summer leg due to the first leg selling out and spanned three continents. After featuring on the albums of both Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj, rock singer Alice Cooper asked her to write lyrics for and vocally perform for their duet track, What Baby Wants, on Cooper’s album, Welcome 2 My Nightmare.
The singer-songwriter held a benefit concert on June 16, 2010 where all proceeds went to aid victims of the Tennessee floods from her hometown Nashville, raising close to $70,000. Subsequent singles from the album, Blah Blah Blah, Your Love Is My Drug and Take It Off achieved similar commercial success each reaching the top ten in Australia, Canada, and the U.S.
Kesha’s second studio album, Warrior was released in November 2012 and the first single Die Young debuted at number thirteen on Billboard Hot 100, eventually peaking at number 2. In March 2013, Kesha announced the Warrior Tour, and the North American leg was co-headlined with rapper Pitbull.
12
On October 7, 2013, Kesha and Pitbull released a collaboration, Timber, which was an international commercial success and became Kesha’s third number-one and her eleventh top 10 single on the Hot 100 chart.
Due to her mainstream success around the world, a TV series documentary, Ke$ha: My Crazy Beautiful Life began airing on MTV in April 2013.
In March, Kesha confirmed via Twitter that she has completed her treatment and is currently “working on tons of new music”.
In January of this year, it was announced that Kesha had checked into Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center, a rehab centre in Illinois for eating disorder treatment. Kesha’s mother Pebe Sebert confirmed in an interview that the eating disorder Kesha was suffering with is bulimia and that she had been struggling with it ever since she was signed with Dr Luke.
Aside from music, Kesha was named rights group Humane Society of the United States’s first global ambassador for animal rights, for which she is expected to bring attention to such practices as cosmetics testing on animals, and shark finning. She also appeared alongside rock singer Iggy Pop in a campaign for PETA, protesting the clubbing of baby seals in Canada.

Kicking the Bucket Seats
(When Low-Cost Airlines Are Anything But!) We’ve all done it, haven’t we? We’ve spotted an incredible bargain on the internet which it would be crazy to ignore. A couple of flights to the very holiday destination we’ve been talking about for months on sale for less money than we’d spend on a pair of shoes. Amazing. What great luck. Obviously, such cheap flights to a popular resort at this busy time of year won’t be available for long. We can’t risk dithering. We’re reaching for the credit card and filling out the online form at the speed of lightening. And we’re in such a hurry that we haven’t really paid much attention to the words ‘further charges and terms & conditions apply’ written in tiny letters at the bottom of the screen. It’s only once we’ve paid in full for our amazing bargain bucket seats that we start to take note of all the additional expenses which have been added to the bill. Insurance. 16
Okay, every airline makes an extra charge for insurance. It’s only to be expected. Not a problem. But there’s also a booking fee. Oh, and an administration charge. What on earth is the difference? And how can they make a charge for the administration when it’s us that’s made the booking and done all the work?? Anyway, adding the compulsory insurance has practically doubled the price of the tickets and the mysterious admin charges have added another fiver per person but, hey, it’s still a pretty good deal, right? We’re still happy with our bargain. Then we start to read about all the other little extras not included in
the overall price. Ah... there is no free checked luggage allowance. We hadn’t spotted that. All luggage is going to be subject to an extra fee at the time of check in and that fee is dependent on the exact size, shape and weight of the luggage and whether it’s high or low season. (And, very probably, on lunar cycles and whether or not there’s an R in the month...) We notice that passengers are entitled to one free piece of cabin luggage and we start to consider if we could fit everything we need for our week’s holiday into our carry-on bag. But since the cabin luggage allowed can be little bigger than a CD case, it’s unlikely. So unless we want to live in the same underwear for seven days,
we’ll just have to bite the bullet and cough up for the baggage. Naturally, when you pay next to nothing for a flight to foreign climes, you can’t expect to fly from the likes of Manchester or Heathrow. You anticipate that you’ll be flying from an airport such as Stansted or Luton which will not exactly be at the hub of a brilliant public transport infrastructure. But so what if the airport is a little bit awkward to reach? The flight is at 16.40, giving us all day to get there by public transport. And, okay, the journey might require three trains, five buses and a lift from Graham next door but, no worries, we’ve got plenty of time.
Then, of course, we receive an insultingly brief and automatically generated email telling us that our flight has been rescheduled from reasonable o’clock to 6.00am. That’s six o’clock in the morning! An hour and a half before the first train leaves... Bursting with anger and disbelief, we contact the customer services department.
we abandon our attempt to speak to a real person and opt for a strongly worded complaint via the online system. Some days later we receive a curt reply drawing our attention to the small print. Yes, we should have read the small print prior to booking – it’s easy to be wise after the event but there are 43 pages of it and the font is so small it requires a laboratory-standard microscope to read. After ploughing through all the heretofores and thereafters we discover that, indeed, “The company reserves the right to alter scheduled flight times within 12 hours of the original...”. Great.
No refund, no compensation and no choice but to take the 6.00am flight. So, with such an anti-social flight time, there’s now no chance of reaching the airport on public transport. We’ll have to get a taxi at a cost so extravagant we may need to re-mortgage the house and sell one or two of the children. But there’s no point in moaning, the flights have been bought and paid for, the bags are packed and the dog has been despatched to the kennels. Let’s just grit our teeth, try to make the best of this holiday and get in the damn taxi!
Or at least we try to. After two hours of trying to navigate the automated telephone system (“Press 1 to be ignored indefinitely, press 2 for a punch in the face...”),

18
On reaching the airport we realise that, amidst all the stress and anguish over arranging the taxi and measuring every single piece of baggage to the last fraction of an inch, we have totally forgotten to print off our boarding passes and check-in online as stipulated. After a blazing row so ferocious it makes the Battle of Hastings look like a minor disagreement, we storm off to the airline’s counter to see if the staff there can help. The smiling attendant tells us that it’s absolutely no problem, of course we can check in and be issued with boarding passes at the counter... it’ll just cost us an extra £45. Each. When we eventually stop sobbing and screaming obscenities, we tell him that, yes, that’ll be fine. Thanks.
desperate need of a lie-down with a gin-moistened copy of the inflight magazine on our face. We are now in absolutely no mood to actually go on this holiday which has ultimately cost so much money it would have been a damn sight cheaper to just hire a private jet and a fleet of limousines chauffeur-driven by the Rolling Stones to travel to our destination. When the flight attendant does the safety spiel and points out the oxygen mask, you wonder if you might be allowed a little shot right now...
So, the next time we’re tempted by an unbelievable internet bargain, let’s just remember, if it looks too good to be true... it probably is!
Finally, after hours of queuing, being herded around and shuffling from pillar to post like extras from “The Walking Dead”, we can eventually board the flight. Obviously, there is no chance of sitting together and we’re left with the very worst seats on the plane. We’re stressed, exhausted and in 19
Father’s Day – 15th June (UK)
20
I
t’s funny how the sight of Father’s Day cards in the shops can still bring a huge lump to my throat. I never even used to buy Father’s Day cards - I always made my dad a card, a throwback to my childhood when I would present him, very proudly, with a new painting, drawing or potato print every single day. He was a fine art dealer and, as the business had its own framing workshop, Dad would often frame my artistic offerings and display them on the wall of his office. A gullible client once expressed an interest in my monochrome finger painting (a portrait of the family cat, if memory serves) commenting on its simplicity and naïve style. Thinking the man was having a giggle, Dad played along and, within minutes had convinced him that the painting was an early Picasso! Red faces all round, however, when said customer then offered thousands of pounds for the picture and Dad to confess that it was, in fact, the work of his five year old daughter!
Dad was almost 50 when I came along and always claimed that I’d helped to keep him young and energetic. But I don’t think that man was ever going to be old – even in his 80’s he was full of fun and mischief and so very young at heart. It’s been just over 6 years since he died and, when I think of him, it’s not with sadness or tears but with joy and laughter because he was such a delightful old devil who had an extremely happy and healthy life until his rather sudden death at the age of 86. He was a great mate and a wonderful dad, he made everyone laugh and feel special and I’m so lucky to have had him in my life for such a long time.
panama hat. I loved the sly glances people gave him, clearly wondering if he was a famous jazz musician or somesuch. The final Father’s Day I ever spent with him was a great day out involving much fun and silliness, just like all the others. I never dreamed that it would be our last.
His birthday can come and go without me shedding a tear, or even really noticing, if I’m honest. But Father’s Day was OUR day. My older brother would present the obligatory card and hearty handshake first thing in the morning and then scarper, letting me have Dad all to myself for the day. We would go out for a lavish lunch (which he would pay for!) and then take a stroll along the promenade (I was born and raised by the seaside), arm in arm, talking and laughing about everything and nothing. We’d end the day with a snifter in the opulent surroundings of the piano bar at the Clifton Arms Hotel on the seafront where I would compare other dads in beige knitwear (very unfavourably!) to my dad who was always the picture of style and sartorial elegance. In the summer he was usually sporting a linen suit, brightly coloured cravat with matching pocket handkerchief and a
So, with Father’s Day just around the corner, Dad is often in my thoughts and I wallow in my memories. He always made me laugh, loved me, spoiled me rotten and supported every crazy idea I had (even the one about giving up a well-paid management job to go backpacking around the world with no way of paying my mortgage). What I wouldn’t give to have just one more Father’s Day with my adorable, silly, funny, warm and loving father. I know you really don’t need me to tell you this but, people, cherish your loved ones and make the most of every single moment you spend with them. Because you just never know…

So who’s going to win... Brazil will fancy their chances, but they haven’t been tested that hard as they did not need to qualify. Considering a European nation have never won a World Cup in South America, then Spain and Germany are up against it. I have a feeling though that a European side will win this time. 27

Midfielders: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Southampton), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Man City), Ross Barkley (Everton). So Roy Hodgson has picked a half decent 23 with at least 10 of them under the age of 24. So there is some experience dotted around the team and Hodgson has gone with form rather than fame. This means he has taken a gamble though, with the dropping of Ashley Cole, one of the most experienced left backs in the game. Now Hodgson has gone for Baines and Luke Shaw who is only 18, but this means Baines has all the pressure and he’s only got 6 caps at the age of 29. Cole is a better player than Baines and far better at defensive work. The Cole decision could come back to haunt Hodgson.
29
Manchester United’s woeful season means seasoned players like Michael Carrick have been dropped, along with team mate Tom Cleverly. Jermain Defoe now plays in the Canadian league and that seems to have cost him his England place and Andy Carroll’s inability to score many goals at all this season has also cost him.
So with Hart, England has a steady goalkeeper, with Cahill and Jagielka fairly steady as centre backs, Baines as left back and Johnson as right back. That defence worries me as both Baines and Johnson can be good going forward but they aren’t the best defenders in the world.
All will depend on the midfield with Steven Gerrard acting as Captain and midfield general. As Gerrard will play, the he will need a partner in midfield and I can’t see Lampard getting the nod as that has been tried so many times before it’s almost embarrassing. So who?
30
Hodgson might go for Jordan Henderson to do the running and covering for the team, and as both players are in form they will settle in together nicely. Milner can be a steady player in a crisis, and might get the nod, and if Wilshere is not injured then he must surely get the starting place. The rest of the midfield is made up of mainly attacking players with the likes of Oxlade Chamberlain, Lallana and Sterling. All can score goals and Hodgson might be tempted to go for a five man midfield.
That leaves the strikers with Rooney being favourite to start as ever, and he was one of the only bright points for Manchester United’s season. Sturridge has been in spectacular form as well and so must be there or there about in Roy’s’ thinking. Wellbeck has very good form in an England shirt and so will be a handy backup.
So this is quite a brave selection from Hodgson especially with the omission of Cole and the lack of a defensive midfielder. This team looks like it will attack in style and I just hope the temperatures in Brazil won’t mean that we tire and slip up in midfield.
Probable Team: Hart, Johnson, Jagielka, Cahill, Baines, Gerrard, Wilshire, Sterling, OxladeChamberlain, Sturridge, Rooney

GROUP A
GROUP B
Brazil Croatia Mexico Cameroon
Spain Holland Chile Australia
Brazil have won the most World Cups in history with 5 so far, and as this World Cup is on home soil, they must be one of the favourites with the likes of Neymar and Oscar doing their stuff. Croatia should come second in this group as they’re a skilful side led by Luka Modric.
GROUP C
GROUP D
Columbia Greece Ivory Coast Japan Columbia have Radamel Falcao and the Ivory Coast have Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure. Both teams should qualify.
32
Spain are current World and Euro (twice running) Cup holders and while they are slightly aging they have more than enough to get our of this group. The other place will be between Holland and Chile and the Dutch may struggle with dark horses Chile.
Uruguay Italy England Costa Rica Uruguay are a bit like Liverpool with a great attack with Luis Suarez and Edison Cavani upfront but a suspect defence. Italy are always strong and England have a good attacking line up, so this should be an excellent group to survive. I’ll still go for Italy and England to qualify.
GROUP E
GROUP F
Switzerland Ecuador France Honduras
Argentina Bosnia-Herzegovina Iran Nigeria
France and Switzerland to qualify with something to spare.
GROUP G
Argentina are one of the favourites and so should walk this group with Lionel Messi in the squad. Bosnia-Herzegovina have qualified for the first time and have Edin Dzeko of Manchester City so they could prove stiff competition to the form team in Africa, Nigeria.
GROUP H
Germany Portugal Ghana USA This is a tough group with little to choose between 3 of the teams. Germany should walk this group but as for the other qualifier this could be a tough call. Portugal have got Cristiano Ronaldo so that might edge it.
Belgium Algeria Russia South Korea Belgium are an excellent side with the like of Kompany and Hazard and so should easily qualify top. Russia should just about edge out South Korea.

La Galería Shooting Range Go for a great day out – or why not become a member?
La Galeria Shooting Range hosting a 25 metre range, is situated in the Malaga industrial zone and is located just a few minutes drive from Malaga airport. For a past time with a difference the experience of shooting an array of guns makes this an unforgettable experience. At La Galeria, they teach both armed and unarmed self-defence methods, and courses can be modified to the client personal requirements. They also teach Olympic style competition shooting, as well as tactical style shooting. These start from the most basic, through to sport professional/tactical operative. The Instructor down at La Galeria is highly qualified and experienced.
What to Expect On entering La Galeria Shooting Range, you are greeted by their instructor, a very polite and extremely welcoming man. Your first port of call is straight to the office, (as all first timers must do) where you are given a form to be filled out and briefed on the laws and conditions of the range. At this time you are also being assessed to make sure you are competent, sane and most of all not under the influence of any alcohol (not even a pint), so enjoy a beer afterwards. By the way it’s extremely cheap there at only 1 euro a beer in the clubhouse! Taking you through to the range you will notice that safety is made a priority, taking you through everything step by step so that you feel not only confident but also comfortable in the surroundings. 34
The induction consists of the instructor explaining the range and how to conduct yourself whilst in the range. He will then ask you to stand and hold the gun, most people seem to think they should hold it either like a gangster or Bruce Willis from the Die Hard films. This is not the case! You are then shown the correct way to stand and the correct way to hold the gun. Once in the correct position, you are given a loaded .22 pistol, (this is the gun you begin with) while under complete supervision you are then told to shoot at the target. The next stage is evaluating where your shot finishes on the target. The instructor will then adjust your stance and grip and ask you to shoot again. Amazingly enough with a few small changes you will really be able to see that his instruction does drastically improve your shot. As the induction proceeds you will shoot .9, .38, and .45 millimetre guns. You will then be taken through everything safely and competently and at the end of it you will surely be able to see a tremendous difference from the first few shots.
All in all it is definitely a superb day out and is fully recommended to anyone wanting a day out with a difference and an unforgettable experience.
La Galeria also have a very friendly club atmosphere often having themed club nights, and family gettogethers. They can organize all paperwork regarding the firing, owning of, and buying and selling of legal firearms. Prices start from 110€ per person for the original introduction that is compulsory. Groups of 4 or 5 are preferred, but they can accommodate groups up to 10 at one time. The introduction is about 1 hour long. Once completed tuition is from around 40 euros per hour for non members + munitions. For members, it’s only 20 euros + munitions.

Cheryl’s daringly low cut dress at Cannes Cheryl Cole’s red carpet dress went down an absolute storm when she stepped out in Cannes last month. The gorgeous, floor-length number turned heads as she looked very much the glamour queen. However, at another Cannes party later on that evening she was seen wearing a very unflattering number as her chest was almost exposed showing off her extremely small frame. Definitely a way to get noticed Cheryl.

Toxic beauty products
If you thought the regulators do a superb job in controlling what goes into our food supply, you’ll be equally appalled, if not more, on its regulation of cosmetic and personal-care products. The same way you look at food labels, you should do the same for your beauty products. There are thousands of chemicals in your products, many of which are being absorbed into your body. These companies have the right to use any ingredient or raw material without government review or approval. This industry is highly unregulated. There is no pre-product approval before a product hits the market and enters your home. A minuscule approval process exists, but only for colour additives and ingredients classified as over-the-counter drugs. Many of these synthetic chemicals are skin irritants, skin penetrators, endocrine disrupters and are carcinogenic. 52
Here are some chemicals that should be avoided Parabens
Parabens are widely used preservatives that prevent the growth of bacteria, mold and yeast in cosmetic products. However, parabens possess estrogen-mimicking properties that are associated with increased risk of breast cancer. These chemicals are absorbed through the skin and have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumours. They can be found in makeup, body washes, deodorants, shampoos and facial cleansers. You can also find them in food and pharmaceutical products.
Synthetic colours
Synthetic colours are derived from petroleum or coal tar sources. They are suspected to be a human carcinogen, a skin irritant and are linked to ADHD in children. The European Classification and Labeling considers it a human carcinogen and the European Union has banned it.

Fragrance
This term was created to protect a company’s “secret formula.” But as the consumer you could be putting on a concoction that contains tons of chemicals that are hazardous to your health. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep Database, fragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system. It can be found in many products such as perfume, cologne, conditioner, shampoo, body wash and moisturisers.
Triclosan
Tricolson is widely used antimicrobial chemical that’s a known endocrine disruptor – especially thyroid and reproductive hormones, and a skin irritant. Studies raise concerns that triclosan contributes to making bacteria antibiotic-resistant. Tricolson can be found in toothpastes, antibacterial soaps and deodorants.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) This surfactant can be found in more than 90 percent of personal care and cleaning products (think foaming products). SLS’s are known to be skin, lung, and eye irritants. A major concern about SLS is its potential to interact and combine with other chemicals to form nitrosamines, a carcinogen. 54
These combinations can lead to a host of other issues like kidney and respiratory damage. They can be found in shampoo, body wash/cleanser, mascara and acne treatment.
Toluene
A petrochemical derived from petroleum or coal tar sources. You may see it on labels listed as benzene, toluol, phenylmethane, methylbenzene. Toluene is a potent solvent able to dissolve paint and paint thinner. It can affect your respiratory system, cause nausea and irritate your skin. Expecting mothers should avoid exposure to toluene vapours as it may cause developmental damage in the fetus. Toluene has also been linked to immune system toxicity. It can be found in nail polish, nail treatments and hair colour/bleaching products.
Sunscreen chemicals
These chemicals function as a sunscreen agent, to absorb ultraviolet light. These chemicals are endocrine disruptors and are believed to be easily absorbed into the body. They may also cause cellular damage and cancer in the body. Common names are benzophenone, PABA, avobenzone, homosalate and ethoxycinnmate. They can be found in sunscreen products.
It’s impossible to avoid every single synthetic chemical, but you can do your part in limiting the amount of toxins your body is exposed to. Be sure to: eat clean, avoid chemical-laden processed foods, drink plenty of filtered water and look for products that are certified organic if you want to avoid these toxic chemicals.

CrossFit – A Friend Or A Fad? Over the years, a programme has grown in popularity all over the world that has generated a lot of buzz among doctors, fitness experts, personal trainers, professional athletes and more - It’s the CrossFit system. Those of us interested in strength training and cardio to enhance our overall physique, fitness and natural wellness have often had to go through some gruelling and punishing workouts over the years. Stacked with a variety of celebrity workout programmes, companies have launched an uncountable number of fad diets in hopes of generating income from those people willing to shell out money for fitness training. Unfortunately, for someone who’s new to fitness and weight training, it can be difficult to spot the useless programmes and fad diets from the legit programmes that are geared toward actually improving your lifestyle. This methodology has sparked both interest and controversy over the years, and like many of the other workout programmes and weight conditions systems there are a lot of people on the fence wondering if CrossFit is a fad or if it’s something more.
56
What Is CrossFit? In the simplest of terms, CrossFit can be defined as a strength and conditioning system that is designed to promote both broad and targeted physical fitness. The system combines a wide variety of exercises to ensure that a total fitness level is achieved, ensuring balance in the body. This is obtained through a combination of workouts in: • Weight lifting or Weight Training • Sprinting or Distance Running • Gymnastics In order to gain the most benefit from the CrossFit programme, someone training through CrossFit should be at least moderately familiar or proficient in key areas that equal what CrossFit refers to as “10 fitness domains”: • Respiratory and cardio endurance • Stamina • Strength • Coordination • Flexibility • Power • Speed • Agility • Balance • Accuracy
CrossFit was created to focus on working across each of the 10 domains. According to CrossFit, this is achieved by promoting neurological and hormonal adaptations across all of the metabolic pathways in the body.
Is CrossFit for Everyone? Because of the nature of the conditioning and exercises involved, there should be an established workout programme that exists in the life of the individual. They should be able to meet basic exercises that involve those 10 domains without difficulty. As such, it’s widely believed that the CrossFit workout system is not meant for people new to exercise. Trained athletes, professional and critics routinely state their opinion on that matter, warning new athletes (and in some cases everyone) to stay away from the system. Those athletes involved in CrossFit typically perform exercises that involve running, rowing, jumping or climbing rope, hefting and moving large objects, including
shuttling objects over long distances, performing powerlifting manoeuvres and Olympic weightlifting techniques. Part of the workout involved the use of free weights, gymnastic rings, pullup bars and a large variety of other bodyweight workouts.
This isn’t a system that you learn from reading a simple book, or grabbing a DVD like Tae Bo, CrossFit is a major system used in over 2,000 gyms around the world. That’s part of the reason why it’s gained so much controversy and attention. Despite the attention it has received, the CrossFit system continues to be used by even professionals in civil service such as police, fire, EMS and military personnel.
While the CrossFit system is available in a number of ways, it’s most commonly found at affiliated gyms across the nation. The company, CrossFit Inc. will certify trainers and license the CrossFit name and programme to gyms that wish to become affiliated. Those affiliates are free to develop their own systems, instructional methods, pricing, etc. There is actually a large number of practicing trainers and athletes within the CrossFit system that have taken a position that questions traditional and conventional fitness methods, a position that has sparked a fair amount of controversy on its own.
What is involved? Intensity Training - It Takes A Certain Type The emphasis of the CrossFit training system, for anyone involved, is on speed and total weight being lifted - the emphasis is not on technique. This complete emphasis and importance being placed on quantifiable results has attracted a number of people that wholly back the system because they believe in it. After all they’re achieving results using this system.
Weight trainers who are working to develop power and tone know that you have to push the muscle to the point of fatigue so that the muscle needs to rebuild and strengthen itself. That’s why common weight training techniques involve pushing to the point of exhaustion, then quickly fueling the muscles so they can rebuild with the proper nutrients. With each forward step in a workout programme over the course of months (and years), weight lifters gradually increase the weight, frequency and intensity of their workouts to continue to stack lean muscle.
CrossFit is designed to build muscle mass in a manner that is both explosive and balanced over the entire body. Despite the results that many have seen while working within the CrossFit programme, there are still many exercise experts that are troubled by many “fad” aspects within the system - particularly the lack of guidance for beginners.
The downfall of the CrossFit System It’s extremely easy for an individual new to exercise to dive headlong into stressful workouts, and the results could be harmful. This is especially true for people who have not actively worked out in a number of years. Any individual involved in medicine and exercise knows that an unskilled person cannot participate in this system without injuring themselves - at least that’s the take that experts are holding on to. Another section of experts feel that the intensity of the workouts in the CrossFit “fad” system don’t just pose a simple risk to inexperienced athletes, but to fit people who work out regularly as well. Anyone who exercises strenuously at too rapid of a pace without proper warm up or orientation (and often even with proper warm up) risk temporary and even permanent injury. The great issue of debate comes back to technique, where exercises of this intensity without form have 57
Those who are set on speaking out against CrossFit focus on the importance that CrossFit places on speed and weight instead of form and technique. While it’s true that you can injure yourself much more easily if you’re not using proper form, this isn’t exclusive to the CrossFit system. An athlete can injure themselves just as easily in any other workout. For those who don’t understand how to protect their core system while not using proper technique are more apt to be injured. This is one of those clear situations where inexperience breeds injury.
a much higher potential for injury, particularly to the joints and the back. Despite the risks there are a number of athletes that remain advocates, charging that the CrossFit diet is not a fad, and it delivers just the challenge that they feel is necessary in order to motivate themselves. It’s especially appealing to individuals that like to push the limits of fitness and strength such as military personnel, fire fighters, police officers and EMS. They tend to feel like the risk is worth it, because it’s no greater than the risk they take every day in their work, and they are hard pressed to find a more challenging workout. It’s no surprise that many take the stance considering some of the more traditional workouts that exist in the CrossFit system. By the definition of the workouts alone, these short gruelling sessions aren’t for the faint of heart or the weekend warrior who spends a couple hours a week at the gym. The 3-day-on with one rest day includes intense workouts that push the physical limits of the body far beyond the point of people who are of average shape. The intensity of the workouts in the CrossFit system is one of the reasons it’s received the “Fad” label, as a sense of elitism is established among those who take part and punish themselves through the bulk of the strict and risk-laden workouts.
58
The Benefits Of The CrossFit System Judging by the research data alone, there’s proof enough to see that the CrossFit system drives results through explosive conditioning. This is not a new concept, and it’s not something that was devised by CrossFit. This method of weight training and conditioning has been in practice for some time now. All the same, this form of exercise does provide the most results in the shortest amount of time without requiring hours of your day, every day.
Conclusion Is CrossFit friend or fad? It’s a matter of opinion. This is a highly-refined system of exercises and training programmes that are geared toward the more experienced athlete. It’s understandable why so many feel that the system is a fad, or a bit on the cult side, but regardless of the stance it’s difficult to argue with hard results from people who successfully use the system almost every day, no matter how many injuries come up.

Can soap chemicals
cause male infertility?
New research has shown that chemicals in common household items such as toothpaste, soap and plastic toys have a direct impact on human sperm which could help explain rising levels of male infertility, scientists have found. One in three “non-toxic” chemicals used in the manufacture of everyday items significantly affected the potency of sperm cells, which may account for the high incidence of unexplained infertility in the human population, the researchers said. It is the first time that a study has found a direct effect of the many ubiquitous man‑made chemicals in the environment on a vital function of human sperm. The findings will raise further concerns about the hidden toxicity of chemicals deemed safe by toxicology tests. But the researchers believe they have developed a new way of testing the impact of household chemicals on human sperm which will allow regulatory authorities in Europe to decide whether to ban or impose restrictions on their use in certain products. The study was part of wider research into so-called “endocrine‑disrupting” chemicals that for several years have been linked with declining sperm counts and widespread male infertility. In some cases, these chemicals are thought to mimic female sex hormones – oestrogens – and in other cases act as anti-androgens, the male sex hormones, thereby interfering with the male reproductive system.
People ingest these chemicals every day either by consuming food and drink contaminated with them or by absorbing them through the skin in personal-care products such as sunscreens and soaps.

However, the scientists found that one in three common household chemicals found in products such as sun screens, detergents and plastics directly sabotaged the human sperm’s swimming behaviour and caused them to prematurely release the critical enzymes needed to penetrate and fertilise the egg cell – which would render the sperm infertile.
In addition, they showed for the first time that there was a “cocktail effect”, when a number of chemicals worked together to amplify their individual effects.
They also found that the concentrations needed to trigger these adverse reactions were similar to the very low levels commonly found within the human body.

Stress can make your allergies worse! If you have allergies, you're more likely to feel the brunt of them if you're stressed out, says new research. Feeling stressed, including by allergy symptoms themselves, can have an impact on how many times people have an attack, it found. Experts at Ohio State University in the US analysed 179 patients for a period of 12 weeks. The research was published in the journal Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. It found that stress can cause several negative effects on the body, including causing more symptoms for allergy sufferers. The study also found that those with more frequent allergy flares also have a greater negative mood, which may be leading to these flares. Symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes can cause added stress for allergy sufferers, and may even be the root of stress for some. While alleviating stress won't cure allergies, it may help decrease episodes of intense symptoms.
PROLIFIC DRINKERS
Experts recommend allergy sufferers relieve stress through meditation and deep breathing, not smoking or drinking caffeine, and asking for help with stressful workloads or events. People should also make time for fun and relaxation, adopt a healthy diet and make sure they get enough sleep.

People in the UK are among the most prolific drinkers in the world, according to a report released by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Britons over the age of 15 on average drink 11.6 litres of pure alcohol a year, according to the “Global status report on alcohol and health 2014. It also reveals that the harmful use of alcohol causes 3.3 million deaths a year worldwide. Europe is the region with the highest consumption of alcohol per person, making up the entire top 10. Belarus takes the top spot, with people on average drinking 17.5 litres of pure alcohol a year, followed by the Republic of Moldova where the figure is 16.8 litres. Australia and Canada also have high levels of alcohol consumption, with people on average drinking 12.2 and 10.2 litres a year respectively. In the United States the figure is marginally lower at 9.2 litres. But in northern Africa and the Middle East, the average figure is less than 2.5 litres of alcohol per person, with many countries having figures below one litre.

Fat Freezing Treatments There has been an increase in fat freezing treatments recently, with women wanting to achieve Keira Knightley’s ‘wasp waist’ A Harley Street clinic has seen a huge increase in tummy and love-handle fat freezing treatments that they say is attributed to photographs of Keira Knightley at the Chanel Paris fashion week show in March. Whereas Keira has been blessed with a small waist, those of us unwilling to put in the graft are opting for a 60-minute noninvasive fat-freezing Lipoglaze treatment that can create a sculpted “wasp waist”. The treatment works by gently heating and then fast-freezing subcutaneous fat cells up to -10 degrees. The fat cells crystallise and die at that low temperature; they are then expelled through the body naturally over the next four to eight weeks. They say: “Around a third of all fat cells treated will disappear from each one-hour session which get rid of a third of all fat cells in the treatment area and in the case of the waistline in amounts to around two inches of the waistline.” In the past month the LoveLite clinic took 180 bookings for Lipoglaze treatments which can shift hard to shift fatty deposits on the love handles and the front of 64
the tummy. The clinic would normally take around 60 bookings over a month. On the day that the Keira Knightley pictures went online they had over 100 enquiries in the space of an afternoon for the treatment which ranges in price from £600 to £1,000 depending on the duration. Debra Robson from LoveLite clinic said: “Most women have booked in for two treatments, one 60 minute treatment on the front and two 30 minute sessions on each side of the hips. These areas of fat are always the hardest to shift even with a strict diet and fitness regime and the lipoglaze treatment will get a result within 4-8 weeks and our recent clinical trials showed it took over 33% of the fat in the treatment area in one 60-minute session, so it’s really effective.” The fat freezing treatment that has been used by several celebs including Luisa Zissman, Binky Felstead and Casey Batchelor can take off over two inches of fat off the waistline in one session.

Outdoor Entertaining
Living in a hot climate gives us the ultimate chance to entertain our friends and families in our gardens; it ensures we make the most of these outside areas so you will want to make sure yours is up-to-scratch for when guests come round. Whether you have a large or small outdoor space, a large terrace – covered or open, or mostly grass: there is so much that you can do to spruce up your garden this summer. There are lots of ideas that can help give your garden and outdoor dining area a lift. Introducing a different colour palate that you can continue with cushions, place mats, table flowers and glassware will liven up the area and create a totally different look.
66
For those who have a large area to fill, then why not think about a large BBQ or outside oven area; there are some fantastic looking outdoor kitchen areas too that can enhance the look of your BBQ area and it means you can be sociable with guests instead of stuck in the kitchen.
Another great effect that works really well when the sun starts to set is to introduce lanterns, flaming torches and tea lights to your outside entertaining space which will give you soft and romantic lighting as it gets dark.

BMW i8
With its ultra-dynamic proportions, elegantly sporty lines, low-slung silhouette and innovative design features, the BMW i8 represents a new generation of sports car.
The launch of the BMW i8 sees the world’s first sports car to be purposebuilt with sustainability in mind complete its journey from vision to reality. Its unmistakable, emotion-stirring looks can be put down to a prototype design that was first unveiled in the guise of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics, meticulously refined for the BMW i8 Concept exhibited at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and now adopted virtually unchanged for the production version. Both the exterior and interior of the emotionally-led 2+2-seater embody a revolutionary, pioneering take on the Sheer Driving Pleasure for which BMW is renowned. Clean, minimalist lines, homogeneous surfaces defined by a small number of crisp edges and function-focused details underline the forward-looking nature of the BMW i8. As the second series-produced BMW i model on the road, the BMW i8 also reveals the versatility of the design language which is establishing itself as an unmistakable signature of BMW i cars. Its design signals lightness, safety, efficiency and pure driving pleasure - stand-out qualities that the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car shares with the BMW i3, its pure-electric sibling conceived for agile and comfortable urban driving.

The key to this versatility is the innovative LifeDrive architecture, which opens up an exceptional degree of freedom for the design of BMW i cars. The central element of the Life module is the carbon-fibrereinforced plastic passenger cell. The Life module is fixed to the aluminium Drive module, which houses all the drive and chassis technology. This distinctive twoway split is reflected on both the outside and the inside of the car by the visible layering and intertwining of different surfaces, with three-dimensional and flowing transitions between the Life module and Drive module accentuating the dynamic appearance of the BMW i8.
