Bruce Springsteen: Still The Boss

H

e’s been around for over 40 years but Bruce Springsteen is quite definitely still The Boss. Far from being a has-been, he is still at the very top of his game and remains one of the most well-respected and popular musicians. His music is still vital, relevant and chart-topping. He has sold more than 120 million albums worldwide with his most recent album, “High Hopes, reaching number one in countries all over the world including the UK, the USA, Australia and much of Europe. His career includes 18 hugely successful studio albums, numerous live albums and dozens of hit singles and is littered with countless awards and accolades.

8

He has won 20 Grammy awards, including best rock song, best solo vocal performance, best contemporary folk album, best rock album and song of the year. His songs have won two Golden Globes and an Oscar. In 1999 he was inducted into both the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame and he is No 23 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Ever Artists. 9

10

In 2013 he was awarded the prestigious MusiCares Person of the Year accolade and Rolling Stone named him Best Live Artist. He even has a planet named in his honour... When making a speech at his induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, Bono said of him, “We call him The Boss, but he works for us. He’s more than a boss, he is the owner. Because more than anyone else, Bruce Springsteen owns our hearts”. How true. Above and beyond the incredible music he produces, Bruce Springsteen also has an indefinable, unique quality which inspires in his fans the fiercest loyalty, respect and abiding love. Bono is also quite right that Bruce Springsteen works for us. He clearly has the utmost respect and love for his fans and is extremely grateful to them for everything their support has brought him. You need only see him play live to know that. Of course, his lengthy and hugely energetic live performances have become legendary. What makes a Bruce Springsteen gig such an amazing experience, in addition to his energy, charisma and outstanding skill as a musician, is that he quite obviously loves playing live. He performs with such an incredible joy and passion. He has wonderful on-stage chemistry with The E-Street Band and seems genuinely to delight in the company of his fellow musicians and his fans. He makes a huge arena gig feel like an intimate party of old friends.

The Ghost of Tom Joad...). But he can also rip out your heart with incredibly haunting and beautiful love songs (Thunder Road, Tougher than the Rest, Bobby Jean...) and gut-wrenching tales of human loss and sadness (The River, Johnny 99, Used Cars, My Father’s House..). Some albums, like the The Ghost of Tom Joad and Nebraska, have a raw, stripped-down sound. Nebraska simply features Springsteen, his guitar and his harmonica and was recorded on a four-track cassette in his New Jersey bedroom. These albums include dark, poetic and evocative songs which tell stories of poverty, immigration, desperation… Other albums,

The joy of Bruce Springsteen’s recording work is that it can supply you with everything your mood, situation and musical needs require. Lots of energetic, up-beat songs with clever, witty lyrics (Reason to Believe, Darlington County, Glory Days...), huge soaring rock anthems (Born to Run, No Surrender, Born in the USA...) as well as some pure, unadulterated folk (Mrs McGrath, Old Dan Tucker, 11

12

such as Born in the USA and Born to Run have a huge, high-octane sound and are characterised by songs fuelled with energy and romance. I can’t remember the first time I heard a Bruce Springsteen song. I was probably just a toddler, listening to “Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ” on an eight-track player in the back seat of my big brother’s Volvo. It seems Springsteen’s music has always been in my life. Then, as now, I devoured every song. It may seem odd that the music of this blue collar boy from New Jersey could paint such vivid pictures for an irredeemably middle class girl from a small provincial town on the English coast. But the achingly beautiful melodies and poetic lyrics of those early albums stole my heart and captivated my imagination. When he sang of his native New Jersey, “This Dusty beach road and the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets” or described the scene in the used car lot, “My mom she fingers her wedding band, watching the salesman stare at my old man’s hands”, I saw it all so clearly. I first saw Bruce Springsteen live when I was teenager in the 1980’s. I was standing right at the front of the stage, four hours passed like minutes and I left walking on air. I have lost count of how many times I’ve seen him since then (though I do seem to have quite a few tour t-sheets in my wardrobe…). At every Springsteen gig, I am struck by his vast and wideranging appeal. His gigs are populated by such a diversity of fans; crusty folkies, leather-clad rockers, the artisan, the reactionary, the conservative, the cool, the geeks and, perhaps most surprisingly to the uninitiated, the very young. Mere teenagers who weren’t even born when I was bouncing around my bedroom to “Dancing in the Dark”, are storming the front of the stage screaming, “Bruuuuce!” at the top of their lungs. I guess great music is great music, whatever your age or place in the world. Most recently, I saw the Wrecking Ball Tour at the Ricoh Arena in June of last year. It was, as always, a brilliant gig and a truly joyful experience. Springsteen played solidly for almost four hours, performing a fantastic selection of songs from his repertoire, taking requests from the crowd to complete the set list. He is still full of fun, warmth and energy and he danced and leapt all over the stage. He isn’t afraid to get amongst the crowd and, as usual, he got quite a few fans up onstage with him to dance,

sing, play his guitar or just have a hug. And there is a little boy called Joseph who now has a fantastic story to tell his school chums; “I sat on Bruce Springsteen’s shoulders, honestly, I really did...”. ‘Icon’ is a much over-used word. So is ‘legend’. And ‘genius’. But I believe they can all be applied to Bruce Springsteen. His longevity, his body of work, the esteem in which he is held all over the world would suggest that to be the case. After all, he is and always will be The Boss.

Marbella Beaches The many beaches in Marbella and its surrounding areas are enjoyed by all who visit here and who live here, as places to chill out, spend time with family, or party the day and nights away! Several beaches also boast the prestigious Blue Flag award, signifying they are the best in the world in terms of water quality, safety, facilities and environmental management. In addition to these blue flag assurances, you can also find showers, public toilets, rubbish bins, lifeguards and parasols and sunloungers to rent on the majority of beaches along the Costa del Sol. With a coastline of 27km, there are 24 individual beaches that are known for their proximity to the local beach bar or chiringuito rather than for their actual names. Whether you want to visit the beaches in the height of summer or on a crisp winter’s day, there are many choices of restaurants and bars for you to grab a bite to eat and drink while soaking up the sun and the atmosphere.

16

Best for Couples...

La Sala by the Sea (formally known as Sala Beach) is just a few hundred yards from the buzzing Puerto Banus front line. Taking its inspiration from the exotic Far East, the beach club and restaurant has many luxurious white beds for you to choose from including those surrounding the swimming pool and those on the raised wooden decked areas. They have three different bars where you can sample the many cocktails and drinks on offer and the restaurant itself offers an appetizing array of dishes that are available both day and night.

Another great beach club / restaurant for you and your beloved is Trocadero Arena located just east of Marbella. Open all year round, you can sit under the stars in the summer while enjoying their delicious cuisine that mixes a fusion of Mediterranean and Asian while in the winter you can head inside to their eclectically designed lounge area complete with colonial African features and Victorian-style furniture.

17

Best for the kids... When heading to the beach with children you will primarily look for areas with shallow waters and activities such as pedalos and banana boats, so you’ll be pleased to know that there are many child friendly beaches all along the coast. Check out Funny Beach, and the beaches to the East of Marbella for activities to keep your children amused while you sunbathe including the aqua park that is located just off shore. The Puerto Deportivo in the centre of Marbella probably has the largest selection of kid friendly places to eat with proximity to some entertainment such as trampolines, playgrounds, Inflatable water parks and even buggy and bike hire too. However whichever beach you ultimately choose it’s inevitable that if you head to one of the many chiringuitos located every few hundred yards along the beach, you can enjoy fresh fish, sangria and value for money while the kids play on the sand or in the sea.

Best for party atmosphere... When it comes to partying on the beach, Marbella is renowned for the legendary parties that the beach clubs host. Ocean Club, Nikki Beach and Plaza Beach all have an A-list celebrity following, luxury beach club service, fine dining and a fair amount of partying day and night. If you want glamour and sophistication then Nikki Beach Marbella is known as one of the best beach clubs in Europe… if not the world. Complete with a renovation this year to include a swimming pool, its signature style, incredible music and sumptuous cuisine, Nikki Beach Marbella, now in its 11th year is definitely a must! If you want to be in the centre of the action, then the newly renovated Plaza Beach, located just a stone’s throw from the front line in Puerto Banus is the beach club for you. With parties hosted weekly and an array of luxury beds to choose from to top up that tan, it wouldn’t be surprising to find yourself rubbing shoulders with the cast of TOWIM. Finally, the ever popular Ocean Club which is known for their famous Champagne Spray Parties and their proximity to the port. With a fantastic restaurant serving international cuisine and one of the largest swimming pools at a beach club in Europe, Ocean Club knows how to treat their guests.

Best for people watching... For those of you who enjoy nothing more than relaxing on a sunbed, watching people as they move about during the day, then Playa de Levante, the beach in Puerto Banus, is where you will find many sunbeds occupied all day long in the summer months. The water there is quite shallow so it is a good place for children and of course there is a lot to do if you fancy getting something to eat or taking a walk. Also just off the beach to the west of Puerto Banus you will find Costa Waterpark, another waterpark that is floating in the sea just off shore. Playa Nagueles is also another great place to relax and watch the world go by. This strip of beach on the Golden Mile near to the prestigious Hotel Puente Romano and the Marbella Club is a popular beach with a long paseo for those who also want to walk, bike or skate. There are a number of both chiringuitos and smarter restaurants on this beach so you can choose which type of cuisine you want.

Best for complete relaxation... It isn’t in Marbella, but if you really want to take the weight off and relax completely, pushing aside all thoughts of work and home life then we recommend heading straight down to Tarifa. Just over an hour’s drive down the coast, the beautiful beaches of Tarifa can make you think you’ve stepped off onto a Caribbean island. The white sand and rolling dunes make it the perfect place to lay down on your towel and do nothing! The hotels and camp sites are in abundance in the area so it’s ideal if you fancy a weekend break and if you are a fan of water sports then the area is renowned for kitesurfing due to the strong winds they can get.

La Galería Shooting Range Go for a great day out – or why not become a member?

La Galeria Shooting Range hosting a 25 metre range, is situated in the Malaga industrial zone and is located just a few minutes drive from Malaga airport. For a past time with a difference the experience of shooting an array of guns makes this an unforgettable experience. At La Galeria, they teach both armed and unarmed self-defence methods, and courses can be modified to the client personal requirements. They also teach Olympic style competition shooting, as well as tactical style shooting. These start from the most basic, through to sport professional/tactical operative. The Instructor down at La Galeria is highly qualified and experienced.

What to Expect On entering La Galeria Shooting Range, you are greeted by their instructor, a very polite and extremely welcoming man. Your first port of call is straight to the office, (as all first timers must do) where you are given a form to be filled out and briefed on the laws and conditions of the range. At this time you are also being assessed to make sure you are competent, sane and most of all not under the influence of any alcohol (not even a pint), so enjoy a beer afterwards. By the way it’s extremely cheap there at only 1 euro a beer in the clubhouse! Taking you through to the range you will notice that safety is made a priority, taking you through everything step by step so that you feel not only confident but also comfortable in the surroundings. 22

The induction consists of the instructor explaining the range and how to conduct yourself whilst in the range. He will then ask you to stand and hold the gun, most people seem to think they should hold it either like a gangster or Bruce Willis from the Die Hard films. This is not the case! You are then shown the correct way to stand and the correct way to hold the gun. Once in the correct position, you are given a loaded .22 pistol, (this is the gun you begin with) while under complete supervision you are then told to shoot at the target. The next stage is evaluating where your shot finishes on the target. The instructor will then adjust your stance and grip and ask you to shoot again. Amazingly enough with a few small changes you will really be able to see that his instruction does drastically improve your shot. As the induction proceeds you will shoot .9, .38, and .45 millimetre guns. You will then be taken through everything safely and competently and at the end of it you will surely be able to see a tremendous difference from the first few shots.

All in all it is definitely a superb day out and is fully recommended to anyone wanting a day out with a difference and an unforgettable experience.

La Galeria also have a very friendly club atmosphere often having themed club nights, and family gettogethers. They can organize all paperwork regarding the firing, owning of, and buying and selling of legal firearms. Prices start from 110€ per person for the original introduction that is compulsory. Groups of 4 or 5 are preferred, but they can accommodate groups up to 10 at one time. The introduction is about 1 hour long. Once completed tuition is from around 40 euros per hour for non members + munitions. For members, it’s only 20 euros + munitions.

“Isn’t It Lo (Why I Hate the Summer!) The summer and I do not have a healthy relationship. With the exception of slush puppies, Wimbledon and the Beach Boys, there is absolutely nothing about it which appeals to me. I feel for summer the malevolence and suspicion with which one regards an ex following an unpleasant break-up; I sulk and whine and do my best to avoid it, being utterly convinced that every single thing it does is perpetrated deliberately to annoy me.

I

like the crunch of frost on the ground, being able to see my breath in the air, the bracing chill of a crisp breeze, trees decked in their russet and gold autumnal colours, mulled wine, roaring log fires, snowball fights, bonfire night, roasting chestnuts... I think you get the picture. In the summer, however, I feel like I am being subjected to some sort of sweatfuelled endurance test during which the entire season is geared towards making me miserable. Firstly, I get hay fever. I get it very badly. I am allergic to every form of grass, tree and plant pollen that Mother Nature sees fit to chuck out into the atmosphere in vast quantities for four or five months of the year. When I was a child, the doctor told my mother that I’d probably grow out of it in time. I’m almost 45 now and still waiting for that to happen. Even with the appropriate medication (which I take in quantities big enough to kill a moose), the misery-inducing symptoms of hay fever can be horrendous. The pain and irritation

24

in my eyes and sinuses feel like someone has pushed a bucket of hot coals into all of my facial orifices then, thinking better of it, has tried to rectify the situation by fishing them out again with a wire brush. Add to that the endless coughing, sneezing, snorting and rapidly closing throat and it’s really not a pretty picture.

To make matters worse, people seem perfectly happy to accept the validity of every other allergy but, for some reason, not mine. People seem determined to drag me on lengthy walks through the countryside or force me to sit in gardens surrounded on every side by shrubs and flowers while the pollen count goes through roof. My entreaties to be allowed to remain indoors are met with eyerolling, thin-lips and barely veiled resentment. “Really?? But it’s such a lovely day. It’s not that serious, is it??” Would they insist that someone with a serious nut allergy gobbles up their satay?? (“Don’t be a wuss... peanuts are really good for you...”) Probably not. And another thing, my poor body just can’t cope with the soaring temperatures and relentless sunshine. If forced to step away from the air-con during the summer months, within a few minutes I have a pounding headache and feel very much like Metallica are playing live behind my eyes. My cleavage is endlessly soggy, my scalp itches and I’m so light-headed that I stumble around

ovely Out?” like Bambi on roller skates. I take refuge wherever I can and loiter in the freezer section of my local supermarket so frequently that I am on first name terms with the store detective.

Furthermore, my delicate, puttycoloured skin is just not equipped to deal with even the weakest sunlight. It starts to redden, itch and blister in the glare of the fridge light, so UV rays send it into total meltdown. I spend the entire summer clad from head to foot in white linen, skulking beneath the voluminous brim of my huge straw hat and slathering an inch-thick layer of factor 50 on to any tiny patch of uncovered skin. I take every possible precaution and always have a family-size bottle of calamine lotion on standby. Nevertheless, I still seem to end up with skin that looks like a pizza.

my face outdoors, it’s like someone has rung the creep-crawly dinner bell. I am beset by hungry, buzzing creatures of all forms that just can’t wait to start chomping lumps off me. All my frantic running around, arm waving and screeching are of little use - indeed, I think the pesky blighters enjoy the challenge. Even the extra-strength insect repellent does little to dissuade them; they view it not as a discouragement, but more of a salad dressing. No matter how many layers of clothes I wear, they still find their way up my trouser leg and down my blouse and my bosom and thighs end up looking like rhubarb and custard. One of the worst things about the summer is that everyone else seems to love it! At the first hint of sunshine, the rest of the population swarms outside, gulping lager in beer gardens, flinging Frisbees in parks, firing up barbeques, every available inch of outdoor space taken up with sun-worshippers, baking in the heat like chops under a grill. Suddenly, garments (and, seemingly, inhibitions) are cast aside and acres of doughy flesh are on show everywhere you look. I have no idea why, but people seem to relish the hot weather.

Of course, if I voice my dissenting opinion, I am regarded as a total deviant and the very worst sort of killjoy. I am frequently asked, “Isn’t it a lovely day??” by grinning sales assistants, bus drivers and bar staff etc. They clearly haven’t noticed my hang-dog expression and quiet whimpering. If I reply, “No, it bloody isn’t! I hate this infernal weather!”, they look at me with abject horror, as if I’d just told them that my favourite hobbies are puppy strangling and mugging old ladies. I usually find it easier to give a big, false smile and exclaim, “Yes! Absolutely wonderful!”. What I’d really love to say is “Just what is it about my swollen and bloodshot eyes, my red-raw nose, my constant sneezing and barking, my pink and blistered skin, my forehead covered in gnat bites and the fact that I’m virtually swooning with heatstroke which gives you the impression I am actually enjoying this putrid, broiling, bloody awful weather?!”. So, the next person who asks me, naive and beaming, “Isn’t it a beautiful day?” may well find themselves being hit in the face with a brick. You have been warned.

This is entirely appropriate since, in the hot weather, my flesh also becomes a running buffet for every bug, insect and flying pest within a five mile radius. The second I show 25

Frankie Sandford married retired footballer Wayne Bridge yesterday and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The Saturdays’ star said I Do in front of her fellow band mates and the JLS boys. Understandably Frankie herself broke down in tears as she walked back down the aisle on Wayne’s arm. Congratulations Wayne and Frankie!

Forbes Top Hollywood Earners has been released

Hollywood is increasingly in the business of making movies with disposable actors — performers who are almost interchangeable and easily replaced. The special effects and bombastic action sequences required for the modern blockbuster cost many millions of dollars. Any money studios can save by casting less-famous actors is money that can go to the bottom line. And if those actors can be easily swapped out in sequels, all the better. A disposable actor doesn’t really have the leverage to demand a big pay hike.

If there’s one actor who has proved himself in-disposable, it’s Robert Downey Jr. The actor has made millions playing Iron Man and for the second year in a row, he tops FORBES’ list of the Top Earning Actors. We estimate that Downey earned $75 million between June 2013 and June 2014, the same amount as he earned last year. Downey reigns as the highest paid man in Hollywood because at this point, it would be incredibly difficult for Marvel to continue making Iron Man and Avengers films without him. Marvel movies starring Downey have earned almost $4 billion at the global box office and millions more on home video, not to mention the millions the movies have generated in merchandise. 28

Kendall Jenner Quitting reality show ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’

With a serious modelling career in the works, Kendall Jenner is reportedly considering leaving the cast of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” She has apparently been advised by friends in the fashion industry that reality TV could damage her modelling career. It’s safe to say that Chanel’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld is not impressed with watching the model get roped into pranks that Khloe Kardashian pulls or see Kendall involved in family fights. Fashion bigwigs want it their way and Kendall had the option to pull out of any other potential shows and that’s exactly what she’s done. Meanwhile, big brother Rob continues to keep a low profile and may be out of the show as well. Rob feels that the reality show has truly ruined his family, and that momager Kris Jenner is always on the lookout for the next big deal for one of her daughters. His significant weight gain has only added to the stress in his life. He has been working out but has very bad eating habits. He just feels very alone.

Prince Harry against Twitter

Social media isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and Prince Harry revealed that he is a Twitter quitter and totally okay with that title. While promoting the Invictus Games, the 29-year-old royal spoke with school children on Monday (July 21) in London, and shared his distaste for social media due to its intrusive nature. Pretty ironic that Harry made the statement to the students who are being trained as “digital champions,” as they learn how to use Facebook and Twitter to promote a multisport event designed for wounded soldiers. “I would love to get involved and go on social media and if it was for causes like this I really would. The issue for myself and my family, put quite simply, is that it’s very hard for me to tweet about the Invictus Games and tweet about something that means a lot to me, whereas I at the same time really quite hate Twitter by the invasion of privacy,” Prince Harry explained. 29

She’s got the figure for it... Carol Vorderman becomes the first celebrity to win the Rear of the Year award twice

Carol Vorderman has been ranked top of the bottoms for a second time. The former Countdown brainbox, known for her ability with figures, is the first person to take the Rear of the Year title twice. The male winner of the prize is singer and television host Olly Murs, who showed he has the X Factor when it comes to a shapely bum. The duo were chosen in a public poll for the annual award, with organisers saying they received more than 10,000 votes. Vorderman, 53, said: ‘I am both surprised and flattered to win the award for a second time - particularly at this stage of my life. As I said when I won it in 2011, I always suspected there were a lot of people out there who were glad to see the back of me. It now appears there were even more than I thought.’ The presenter, who recently stepped down from ITV’s Loose Women, intends to make a solo flight around the world after qualifying as a pilot. 30

‘It’s going swimmingly’: Jacqueline Jossa lifts the lid on romance with ‘hot’ TOWIE star boyfriend Dan Osborne

She is usually remarkably private about her romantic life. But 21-year-old EastEnders actress Jacqueline Jossa has lifted the lid on her romance with 23-year-old TOWIE star Dan Osborne. Having recently been voted 5th sexiest man by Attitude magazine, it’s not hard to see why the pretty actress is smitten.

QROPS – A definitive guide What are QROPS? Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) are HMRC recognised schemes whereby any UK Pension can be transferred to another jurisdiction outside of the UK and allow the person transferring their Pension Fund to avail of a number of benefits that their UK Pension does not have. The UK government are constantly changing UK Pension structures which are beneficial for them but in most cases not for the Pension Scheme itself and with the majority of schemes in deficits that may never be recovered, all points to future hardships for the people depending on these funds to retire in comfort.

Summary of the advantages of a QROPS Scheme 1. Freedom to Control Investments - the possibilities become more or less unlimited and we can utilize investment products from some of the world’s top financial institutions and Discretionary Fund Managers (DFM) to ensure consistent yield, complete flexibility and security. The opportunity to invest into a more diversified range of asset classes can be vital in maximizing you’re earning and savings potential. 2. Flexibility to access funds – access funds at any time between the ages of 50 and 75 with the potential to access the funds outside these ages. 3. Potential for an immediate cash lump sum payment – potential to take a Pension Commencement Lump Sum (PCLS) of up to 30% from age 50. 4. Access to income and capital without deduction of tax at source* - taxation will apply in accordance with the legislation governing the QROPS scheme member’s country of residence. 34

5. Transfer of the fund to future generations upon death – remaining funds can be held in trust for the purpose of transferring to future beneficiaries. 6. Potentially free from UK Death Tax – Whatever monies are in the pension fund at time of death are paid to the person’s nominated beneficiaries without any deductions being made at source. In the UK this can be as much as 55%. 7. Tax planning – with the current tax treatment of QROPS in certain jurisdictions, we have the option to incorporate a ‘temporary annuity’ (capped drawdown) which can ensure favourable tax treatment. 8. No limit on fund size – allowing you to add to your current fund if you want. Regular or lump sums can be added as you please to any size unlike your UK scheme which is limited to HMRC guidelines. All these advantages are possible after your UK pension fund has been transferred to a QROPS and you have been a non-UK tax resident for five full complete and consecutive UK tax years. Over the last 30 years, the pension deficit in the UK has reached levels of over £220 Billion pounds! • One in three company DB schemes has been scrapped in the last decade. • An astonishing 58,000 company schemes have been wound up, according to the Occupational Pensions Regulatory Authority (OPRA). • 110,000 schemes still exist - but OPRA believes a further 30,000 are under threat as the funding crisis grows. • The scheme trustees have the power to vary an actual members benefits if it’s in the best interests of the scheme in general.

How safe is your pension? With changes in legislation by Government, Trustees gaining more power over Pension Schemes they oversee, and the huge deficits in Pension Funds nobody seems to know where the Traditional Pension Scheme will end up. Karl Quane of Global Wealth Management Ltd states ”These deficits in Pension Funds may never be recouped and legislative changes are penalising, so anyone who has a Pension scheme needs to be aware that their hard earned cash could be working harder for them and needs to be protected more securely” he continues, “People need to take ownership of their Pension Funds and get more involved in the decision making process going forward, and therefore create a more secure environment with the opportunity for real growth”. What would you advise? “Find an Independent Broker who will do a review of your current financial situation and help you to tailor a plan that suits your personal needs, with a specific focus on what you want at retirement and when”. All of the above points to one thing and that is for you to take control of your Pension Fund now and take advantage of all the benefits a QROPS Scheme can offer over your current scheme, to make sure that you maximise that fund for your Retirement.

Treatments to help Erectile dysfunction Erectile dysfunction apparently isn’t just an older man’s problem anymore. Young men are now leading the surge in Viagra use. Or are they using it as an enhancer rather than a remedy? Viagra was the first oral drug approved for erectile dysfunction (ED), which transiently affects nearly all men at some point. ED can occur at any age, but typically affects men after age 50. Since Viagra, other drugs have become available on the market, including herbal alternatives. There is evidence that these pills are used by some without ED to enhance sexual performance. A study a few years ago in the journal AIDS shows that roughly one in three gay men without ED who were treated at San Francisco health clinics admitted to using Viagra as a sex enhancer, often in combination with illegal drugs. Also many are using it because of psychological problems rather than physiological. Young men often seek something to help them because they are anxious about new relationships and can’t perform. There are many other alternatives available, although not all are scientifically proven to help: l Acupuncture. Though acupuncture has been used to treat male sexual problems for centuries, the scientific evidence is insufficient to suggest that acupuncture is an effective treatment.

48

l Arginine. The amino acid L-arginine, which occurs naturally in food, boosts the body’s production of nitric oxide, a compound that facilitates erections by dilating blood vessels in the penis. Men with known cardiovascular problems should take it only with a doctor’s supervision; L-arginine can interact with some medications. l DHEA. Testosterone is essential for a healthy libido and normal sexual function, and ED sufferers known to have low testosterone improve when placed on prescription testosterone replacement therapy. l Ginseng. Korean red ginseng has long been used to stimulate male sexual function, but few studies have tried systematically to confirm its benefits. Discuss with your doctor before taking it since ginseng can interact with drugs you may already be taking and cause allergic reactions.

l Pomegranate juice. Drinking antioxidant-rich pomegranate juice has been shown to have numerous health benefits, including a reduced risk for heart disease and high blood pressure. Does pomegranate juice also protect against ED? No proof exists, but results of a study published in 2007 were promising. l Epimedium, also known as Horny goat weed. Horny goat weed and related herbs have been used as treatments for sexual dysfunction for years. Italian researchers found that the main compound in horny goat weed, called icariin, acted in a similar way as drugs like Viagra.

No matter what ED treatments a man ultimately decides upon, experts say it’s important to eat healthily and to avoid smoking and heavy drinking. Moreover, adequate exercise, stress reduction, and sleep can improve erectile dysfunction in many.

Sunburn treatments

Forgot to wear suncream? Stayed in the sun too long? Here are some techniques to soothe and treat sunburn.

Fast Pain Relief

j

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Ibuprofen and aspirin are popular options. These can help reduce the inflammation around your sunburn, as well as lessen the pain.

Use an anti-inflammatory paste. Suitable applications include aloe vera, cortisone cream, or other soothing agents specified as suitable for irritated and sunburned skin. If you don’t have any of these, you can make an anti-inflammatory paste out of aspirin. Simply crush up a few pills into a powder that’s as fine as you can manage, then add water, a few drops at a time, until it turns into a goopy paste. Apply to the affected areas.

j

Cooling Relief Have a cool bath or a very gentle shower. Bath: Set the water to a cool temperature that’s just below lukewarm, and relax for 10 to 20 minutes. The temperature will ease the pain, and the water will stop your skin from becoming as irritated. Repeat as often as you need to. Shower: Keep the temperature just below lukewarm and use a very gentle flow or just a sprinkling of water.

j

Avoid using soap, bath oils, or other detergents as you bathe or shower. Any such products will irritate your skin and possibly make the effects of the sunburn feel even worse. If you have blisters forming on your skin, take a bath instead of showering. The pressure from the shower might pop your blisters. When you get out, don’t rub your skin dry with a towel. Instead, let yourself air dry, or pat dry with your towel.

j

Apply cold compressions to your skin. If you’re not in a situation where you can bathe, apply cold, wet compressions to your skin. Dampen a washcloth with cold water, and lay it over the affected area for 20 to 30 minutes. Re-wet it as often as you need to.

Applications for Relief

j

Apply aloe vera to burned skin. You can buy gels or lotions that contain aloe vera at most shops, or you can cut a chunk off the plant itself if you have one available.

Using your finger tips, gently apply the aloe to your sunburn. Don’t rub it in all the way, leave it a bit goopy and moist on top of the burn, as this helps prevent the skin from drying out and becoming more irritated. Reapply as often as necessary.

j

Treat inflammation with cortisone cream. Cortisone creams contain a small dose of steroids that can work to reduce inflammation to your sunburn. You can find low-dose, over-the-counter tubes at your local chemist or supermarket. Look for hydrocortisone or something similar.* 50

*Do not use cortisone cream on young children. Ask your pharmacist for advice if you have any doubts or concerns about using this cream.

Keep Hydrated

j

Drink plenty of water. Sunburn can be dehydrating, so it’s important to counterbalance this by drinking a lot of water while you recover. Aim for 8 glasses containing 236ml of water each day (or even a little bit more).

Protecting Sunburned Skin

j

Protect sunburned skin if you’re going outside. Ideally, you stick to the shade or wear clothing over affected areas. If you can’t avoid exposing your skin, though, apply a thin layer of aloe vera on the burn, then put SPF 45 sunscreen on top to prevent further damage.

j

Apply unscented moisturizer to your skin as it starts to heal over. When you no longer have open blisters, or the redness of the sunburn has subsided a bit, liberally apply a creamy, unscented moisturizer to sunburned areas over the next few days or weeks to prevent peeling and irritation.

Homestyle The bedroom is one of the most sacred rooms of your home, and, even though most of it is spent sleeping, it is one of the rooms where we spend the most time. It is the first area you see when you wake up, and the last image when you fall to sleep, so you should spend time thinking about the furniture and decor.

Beautiful Bedrooms

It is one of the few rooms that you can design and decorate to your personal taste, and not have to worry what everyone thinks.... as they won’t all see it!

52

Moroccan Accents

Rustic

We’ve seen a rise in Moroccan prints over the past few years. Look for Moroccan patterns on canvas prints, puffs, curtains, bed and upholstery coverings. These additions to a room are easy to implement and have a striking impact.

Rustic, natural and rugged. Use natural colours, and natural accessories such as branches to add a real rustic feel to the room.

Gray, Soft Blacks and off Whites Look for off blacks, grays and whites, blending in to each other. This colour scheme is a popular trend this year.

Beautiful Blues Soft pastel sky blues, navy, brilliant blue to electric turquoise; they’re all in vogue at the moment, and all the shades work well together. Use a variety of blue in contrast to a fresh crisp white to give your room a happy upbeat feel; an ideal start for the perfect day!

Dash of Danish Danish beds are in for 2014. This style of bed has been growing in popularity over the past year and is seen to continue in its trend. Complement the Danish bed with an uncluttered, bright, organized room for maximum effect.

Natural Materials Natural tones, wood features, metals, stone and brick are all popular this year. Use natural materials such as chunky planks of wood as features, or use stonework on your walls.

Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Set aside. Add the shallots to the oil and fry for 3-4 minutes until golden and crisp. Drain on kitchen paper and set aside. 3. Tear the Chinese leaf into pieces and put in a large bowl. Add the carrot, spring onions and mint. Toss well. Spoon on to a large platter. Drizzle with the dressing and toss. Scatter with the coriander, peanuts and shallots. Tip. This salad is great with grilled chicken.
