the liVes and loVes oF ‘the Playboy bunnies’!

the Playboy Club Originally, the ’Bunnies’ were the inspiration of Hugh Hefner, the founder of the ‘Playboy’ Empire, who opened his first ‘Playboy Club’ in Chicago, in 1960. Better known as ‘Puffin’, (no reflection on his physical state after having sex), he’s made more than $43 million from his original sexy concept. It was a fantasy kind of lifestyle for the very rich, or privileged male clients – the ‘key holders’ of the Clubs. For them, the pleasure of this sex symbol waiting on their almost

every need, was a re-affirmation that they ‘had made it’ in some of the world’s most busiest, and most profitable, nightclubs and casinos. By charging $25 (20€) per person for membership in 1961, the Playboy empire made $25 million alone that year, and maintained this enviable position for many years.

Famous Visitors to the Club

The Club received many important VIP’s. Princess Margaret, visited the Playboy Club regularly, around 1972. Scott Walker, who sung the chart hit, ‘Joanna’ in 1968, also visited the Club, as well as Stanley Kubrick, the famous Director of the ‘Clockwork Orange’ film. Tom Jones often visited the Club, and another famous singer, Dinah Washington was frequently seen there.

rry

So, Who were the ‘Bunnies’? The ‘Playboy Bunny’ was the name given to the waitresses in the Playboy Clubs. Deborah Harry, better known as the sexy 80’s pop singer, ‘Blondie’, was initially a ‘Bunny’, as well as the beautiful actress and model, Lauren Hutton.

Other famous ‘Bunnies’ were Patricia Quinn, who played Magenta in ‘The Rocky Horror Show’, and Carol Sharkey, the mother of the rock singer, Jon Bon Jovi. Many of them went on to become famous singers, actresses, and celebrities in the entertainment world.

The current favourites are Nikki Ryan; Misti Rhodes; Anastacia Christen; Melissa Dawn Taylor; Malina Rojel; Christine Smith and his long-term ‘on-off’ fiancée, Crystal Harris. She left him, and took their dog, only five days before she was due to marry him, in June, 2011. Recent Twitters from Crystal say that their relationship is back on although ‘twice married before’ Hugh has said he will never get married again!

Want to be a Playboy Bunny? The girls’ first step on the ladder to fame, was to pass the scrupulous interview, selection and training process imposed on the potential ‘Bunnies’. Then, they had to abide strictly to the Club rules, which meant learning exactly how to serve food and drinks correctly; and performing all the bunny moves exactly. The main move was the ‘Bunny Dip’, where the ‘Bunny’ leant back and balanced, with her raised left knee tucked in behind the right one, in order to become the ‘perfect Bunny!’ This move allowed her to serve the drinks, and still stay composed in the high-cut costume. Customers were not allowed to touch them, so the girls felt very safe working within the Club.

No Sleeping with the Clients!

Hugh lost his virginity when he was 21

Bunnies couldn’t date the clients, except for the most important ‘key holders’. Known only by their first names (from a name badge rosette, worn on the right hip part of their costume) rumours circulated that the Bunnies also worked as prostitutes. The strict rules meant that they weren’t allowed to sleep with the customers - but inevitably, some girls did. Nevertheless, many women were desperate to become a ‘Bunny’ - mainly because of the high wages. Even in the 1960’s, the girls got 35 pounds a week, plus the substantial tips, so it was more glamorous and better paid than office, factory or shop work. There were also many weekend parties to attend, at Lownes country house, in Hertfordshire, where they would ‘mix with’ the ‘crème de la crème’ of film and music industries.

What Glamorous Costumes! For most of the women, the very distinctive and attractive ‘Bunny’ costumes were the main attraction of the job. Just like the instantly recognisable neon bunny head logo, the ‘Bunny’ costumes, an adaption of a one-piece black swimming costume, with white collar, cuffs, rabbit ears and fluffy cottontail made the girls look especially outstanding and sexually alluring, compared

Many of the ‘Bunny’ costumes were individually made and fitted, by specialist seamstresses, who were always available, and based in the nightclubs, to ensure the girls always looked magical in their appearance. The elegant rayon-satin black costume was the colour most girls aspired to wear, as these were usually allocated to the most privileged, or experienced girls. The sexy costumes were originally made in 10 contrasting colours, which increased to 12 colours, by 1962. There was a selection of colours worn by all the girls on every shift, so that there was a contrasting array of rainbow colours, to match the girls’ hair, eyes, and skin type. In the 1960’s-80’s, many other diverse designs became popular, including costumes made from classic animal skin patterns, and seasonal velvety-red Christmas designs, with furry cuffs! There were even multi-coloured polka dot costumes, each costume giving special rights and privileges. In 1999, Heather Kozar, wore a specially-designed gold lame costume, for her ‘Playmate of Heather Kozar in 1999’s Playboy the Year’ centrefold.

Not quite what they seemed! Hefner even patented the exclusive costume design, so that the tight ‘corset-style’ costume couldn’t be copied by other similar clubs. Many of the costumes had ultrastiff cups (made from car seat rubber!), which the girls struggled to fill. They had to use scrunched up toilet roll paper, or shoulder pads, to fill their busts out, but wear sanitary pads, to avoid men getting too close a look at their crutch! Costumes also had ribbons for holding their pens in, when carrying their trays - like a workman does with his tools! Some of the costumes sell for about €8,000 today.

Working the Nightshift

Many of the Bunnies worked the nightshift, from 11.00pm to 6.00am, serving drinks to many of the VIP’s who visited the Club. They had to memorise the 143 different liquors, and to know exactly how to serve them, with a variety of 20 different decorations with only 6 weeks specialist bar training. They had to hand over all of their tips to the barman, who marked down exactly what each Bunny had made that night. These would later be distributed equally between all the girls, on a monthly basis. They made massive sums in tips, which totalled more than their wages. Every shift, they all had to be absolutely perfectly groomed, from bunny ear tip, to their 3 inch high pumps. The ‘Bunny Mother’ always checked their appearance at the start of every shift, for perfectly groomed nails, and the sheerest of tights worn without any snags whatsoever. They had to be perfectly waxed or shaved, right up to the hipbone, because of the very high cut of the costume, and the pure sheerness of the tights. Girls, with darker skins, had to wear a pair of nude nylons, under the black ones as well, so their legs all had the same skin tone. Many of the girls sprayed on Este Lauder’s “Youth Dew”, to deliberately play with the men’s hormones!

The Famous Playmates Many of the well-known ‘Playboy Bunnies’ were later promoted into ‘Playmates’. Wearing their famous costumes, they appeared in the centrefold spread of the ‘Playboy’ magazine, and at particular Playboysponsored events.

Hefner remained in charge, but sacked his friend, Victor Lownes, and it took 10 years before they were on speaking terms again. The Playboy Club was closed down in 1981, when the gaming licence was refused, and the organisation only survived, as Hefner expanded into book publishing, and films on cable and satellite TV stations.

In 2006, the ‘Playboy Empire’ expanded once again, and reopened at The Palms Hotel Casino in Las Vegas. This was the first new Playboy Club to be opened in over 25 years, and encompassed a casino, a nightclub and lounge, a shopping store, and a 2-storey villa for Hugh Hefner. Here, the beautiful ‘Playboy Bunnies’ wore re-designed Bunny costumes, by Italian fashion designer, Roberto Cavalli, to bring their original image more up to date.

Most men are not in a hurry to get married! They’re prepared to wait until Cupid’s arrow strikes eventually, whilst others choose the most suitable woman in their lives, when it’s the ‘right time’ for marriage, or to have children. However, some older men, and those who’ve still not met ‘The One’, are increasingly using marriage, or ‘Introduction’ agencies, to find the right woman to marry.

Many men want a particular kind of wife – good-looking, submissive and homely – someone who will look after them and their home, and in many cases, the older the men are, the younger they want the wife to be. Not only does that boost their egos, but it means that the wife is more likely to be grateful for a husband, who will give her financial stability – escaping from the worries about daily survival, in their often poorer country of origin.

Mail-Order

Brides 56

menslifestylespain.com september 2012

Would you marry one?

These women often consider older men to be more mature, reliable and responsible - more of a ‘father figure’, who’s devoted to their daily and sexual needs, but is perhaps, less sexually demanding than a younger man! Unfortunately, this kind of woman is often seen as a ‘gold digger’, who is simply more interested in his money, than him personally.

What exactly is a ‘Mail-Order Bride’? A ‘Mail-Order Bride’ is a woman, who publishes her intention to marry a man from another - usually more developed - country. Although this label is commonly accepted, the term is often seen as derogatory, and maybe, slightly offensive. It implies that without someone willing to pay for her, that she would otherwise be an unwanted woman in her own country. For her, it’s often a question of economics, and for him, to show the people in his life that he is desirable, normal, and accepted in society, as a married man.

Nowadays, it’s more likely that the women would come from poorer countries like Colombia, Venezuela, and Thailand, and to a lesser extent from Mexico, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, China and Malaysia. However, since the collapse of the Soviet Union, many Eastern European women are now advertising themselves for marriage - especially those from Russia, the Ukraine, and Moldova. Many Russian women put their own photos and profiles directly onto the internet - without the need to use marriage agencies - hoping to find the ideal ‘Mail-Order Husband’. Potential ‘wife hunters’ also need to be wary of rogue marriage websites, which are just scams intended to defraud vulnerable, love-sick or lonely old men into sending large sums of money to meet their potential, beautiful ‘wife’, which, of course, they never see, or hear from again, once the money’s been sent.

Historically, ‘Mail-Order Brides’ were women who listed themselves in catalogues, from international marriage agencies, like ‘Cherry Blossoms’. They placed enticing, often sexy photos, with exciting profiles, stating what they were looking for - with the hope of being selected by a decent man to make a happy marriage. In the process of selecting a ‘Mail-Order Bride’, the man often had to pay a marriage agency large sums of money up-front (often 10,000 -20,000€) to meet ‘the woman of his dreams’, through scheduled tours, meeting various potential partners, in another country. Then, if he met someone he liked, they would make arrangements to get married, if there was some kind of physical and sexual chemistry between them. In the past, many European women deliberately wanted to have an American husband to gain access to the USA, without having to meet the strict conditions of a ‘green card’, which allowed them to live and work there. The 1990 romantic comedy film, ‘Green Card’, starring Frenchman, Gerard Depardieu and American, Andie MacDowell, explores this theme. However, it is him, who is trying to get the green card to allow him to work in the USA, rather than her, through a marriage of convenience. Initially, they can’t stand each other, but eventually they fall for each other, after their official immigration and check-up interview goes badly wrong. He couldn’t remember which brand of moisturiser she used, because he didn’t learn it in advance, although it all turns out well for them both in the end. His immigration application was rejected, when he couldn’t remember her brand of face cream!

Tips in finding a reputable marriage agency: ♥ Check if all the ‘really beautiful’ women shown in the photos are actual members of the agency, or just ‘teasers’ to attract men. ♥ Ask the agency for good referrals and positive feedback from previous men, and question them about introductions events, and success rates in matching couples up. ♥ Check that the testimonials are true, by going back to the original source of the quotes, if possible. ♥ Look at dating forums on the internet, and see if that agency has a good reputation, or are well-known for cheating male clients. ♥ Can you talk directly to the agency owner, and is he known as a trustworthy man, or as a fraud? ♥ If you travel to another country to find and meet prospective brides, does the agency have a guide to help you with the cultural and language differences, or just leave you to your own devices?

The USA issues a K-1 “fiancée” visa, which can be used within six months of issue, and is only valid for a 90day entry into the U.S. ‘Mail-Order’ style engagements account for a tiny fraction of all K-1 visas. This type of visa application specifies the applicant’s fiancé. If the visa holder does not marry the specified fiancé within the validity of the visa, she is required to return to her country of origin. There are many strict laws governing the conditions to be met by ‘Mail Order Brides’ in the USA. Eg. The man has to complete a questionnaire about his criminal and marital background. He must also be screened from all mental illnesses, and/or disorders. The agency must obtain the man’s record from the National Sex Offenders Public Registry database. The questionnaire and record also has be translated into the woman’s native language and provided to her. 64

Cast: : Zac Efron, Josh Radnor, Elizabeth Reaser, Richard Jenkins, Elizabeth Olsen. Director: Josh Radnor. Genre: Drama, Comedy.

Cast: Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres, Alexander Gould, Willem Dafoe, Brad Garrett.

About the film: First released in 2003, Finding Nemo is out this month in 3D. Andrew Stanton, who helped write Toy Story and Monsters, Inc., co-wrote and directed this computer-animated comedy-adventure about finding a very small fish in a very large ocean. Marlin (voice of Albert Brooks) is a more-than-slightly paranoid Clown Fish who is extremely devoted to his young son, Nemo (voice of Alexander Gould), the only survivor after an undersea predator swallowed up Nemo’s mother and her other offspring. It’s not Marlin’s nature to explore unfamiliar waters, but when he and Nemo are accidentally separated near the Great Barrier Reef en route to Nemo’s first day of fish school, Marlin gathers his courage and sets out to find his son. n

Liberal Arts

Gangster Squad Cast: Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Michael Pena, Anthony Mackie. Director: Ruben Fleischer. Genre: Drama, Crime and Mystery. About the film: Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and--if he has his way--every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop...except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. n

About the film: Disillusioned with his career and depressed on the heels of a recent break up, 35 year old Jesse Fisher finds his bleak future looking up after agreeing to speak at his alma mater, and meeting a pretty college sophomore who reawakens his inner passions. Jesse (writer/director Josh Radnor) is beginning to feel as if his options are shrinking after his latest relationship fails, and his job begins to grow suffocating. But when his former college professor (Richard Jenkins) requests that he speak at his upcoming retirement dinner, the increasingly reclusive thirty-something sees it as a great opportunity to break free of his funk. Upon returning to his alma mater, Jesse finds his memories rushing back in a warm wave of nostalgia. Later, when Jesse forms a surprise connection with brassy college sophomore Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen), he finds himself suddenly reinvigorated, and possessing a newfound optimism for the future. n

Retro game Did you of the month know... Pac-man

Pac-man is one of the most iconic games in video history. Ever since it’s initial release in 1980, it has remained massively popular and was the first game to achieve widespread crossover appeal. It spawned several sequels, appeared on everything from t-shirts to salt shakers, and has even had it’s own cartoon and hit single! The aim of the game is to negotiate around a maze, eating all the pellets on the screen, while avoiding four ghostly enemies (named Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde). Their job is to run into Pac-man until all his lives are lost. The level is over when Pacman has no more pellets to eat.

Retro Rating: 10/10 - Those ghosts are scary!

The new cast of characters will find themselves being guided by the original game’s protagonists, who have been relegated to non-playable characters. Borderlands 2 introduces the new villain, Handsome Jack. As many fans of the original know, story took a backseat in the last adventure; lead writer, Anthony Burch, promises that the team is taking story development a lot more seriously.
