Sophie Dahl Born into a well-known family of actors and writers, it was a sure thing that Sophie Dahl would enter the limelight. The granddaughter of one of Britain’s most famous writers and an American actress, Roald Dahl and Patricia Neal, and daughter to actor Julian Holloway and author Tessa Dahl, Sophie’s influential family have played a big role in her life. Grandfather Roald wrote her into one of his most famous books The BFG, and she was immortalised in the character of Sophie in the book.

Her love of writing began at an early age and with encouragement from her family, Sophie thought that her love of the written word could be made into a career. However, in 1997 her friend Lainey Keogh, an up and coming fashion designer, asked Dahl to walk in her very first fashion show at London Fashion Week. Alongside Keogh’s other friends, who included Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen and Marianna Faithfull, Sophie strutted her stuff and earned some attention from fashion critics and journalists. Shortly after the catwalk performance Dahl was ‘discovered’ by Isabella Blow, then a Vogue 6

stylist and who is also now credited for discovering model Stella Tennant and designer Alexander McQueen. Blow introduced Sophie to Sarah Doukas from Storm Model Agency in London who promptly signed the 20 year old Dahl. Later that same year she starred with fellow model and rising international star Kate Moss in Elton John’s music video for Something About The Way You Look Tonight. The young model soon became a star in her own right but was heavily criticised and scrutinised by the public and the media due to her weight. Speaking later in her life, Sophie says she was an emotional eater and would eat whenever she was upset or was facing problems in any aspect of her life. Due to her weight, Sophie became one of the most wellknown and most photographed ‘plus-size’ models in history. Her size did nothing however to impede her career and she has modelled for and appeared in campaigns for Versace, Alexander McQueen, Patrick Cox, Pringle, and Gap to name a few. She has also been photographed by numerous iconic photographers including David Bailey, Bruce Weber, Richard Avedon, and Peter Lindbergh and appeared in high fashion editorials for W Magazine, French and German Vogue, Visionaire, and ID Magazine. In 2000 Dahl made the headlines when she became the face of one of Yves Saint Laurent’s signature scents Opium. The advert, that was created for campaign by artistic director at the time, Tom Ford, was shot by acclaimed photographer Steven Meisel and featured Dahl posing nude on black satin with cherry red hair. Unfortunately the advert received many complaints due its risqué nature and was removed from all UK billboards. After modelling for many years, it was writing that was still pulling

at Sophie’s heart strings and the young star decided to turn back to her first love. In 2003, she wrote an illustrated novella called The Man with the Dancing eyes which became a Times bestselling book, cementing Dahl in the family history of writing fame. She then swapped from being on the pages of magazine to writing for them and began regularly contributing for American Vogue, The Guardian, The Saturday Times, The Telegraph, The Observer and Harper’s Bazaar. Dahl has also written extensively over the years for British Vogue and won a Jasmine award for her regular column about scents in 2010. Her first novel, Playing with the Grownups, was published in 2007 by Bloomsbury Books although it was well mostly received by critics and fans, there were some who thought it just didn’t cut the Dahl grain. The book, although fiction, did seem to take inspiration from Dahl’s life, and many critics claimed if Dahl had really let her humour and in fact herself go while she was writing, the book would have been all the better for it. After writing her first novel, Dahl decided to change tacks slightly and although she stayed within the literary world, her love of cooking and eating took over and she wrote her first cook book. Chronicling her misadventures with food ‘Miss Dahl’s Voluptuous

Delights’ was published by Harper Collins in 2009 and soon became her second Times bestselling book. Fans, cooking enthusiasts and critics all said that it was a cook book worth having on the shelf. With over 100 tried and tested Dahl family favourites, Sophie provided recipes for every time of year and soon producers at the BBC took notice of the book when commissioning a new cooking show. The Delicious Miss Dahl, was a six part cooking show that aired in 2010 and was an immediate success. Dahl’s humour, down-toearth nature and whole hearted good girl nature on screen proved she was a sure fire hit with viewers and soon the show was sold to numerous countries all over the world. After showing she was a natural on screen, Dahl was asked to write and present a second culinary show for BBC2 about Victorian domestic advisor Isabella Beeton which was then shown in 2011. Dahl’s second cookbook, From Season to Season, was also released in 2011, again to both critical and commercial success, thus cementing her as a passionate gastronomic author. Most recently Dahl has turned her attention back to the fashion world and earlier this year designed a capsule wardrobe with Brora for which she also modelled. Described as undeniably Dahl’s style, the line was received well by the fashion pack and the model/ author’s laid back, warm style was transferred easily into the line. Of the capsule collection, Dahl said that she wanted it to be the kind of clothes that you can dress up with heels or wear with flats and

thick tights, which encompasses Sophie’s style completely. Aside from re-joining the fashion world this year, Dahl also has many other projects including writing her second novel, this one is a historical narrative with the plot still yet to be disclosed and she is also now a contributing editor at Harper’s Baazar. Over the years, Sophie has attracted her fair share of admirers but it was in 2007 that she met singer Jamie Cullum at a charity event for the Lavender Trust. The pair hit it off immediately and started dating. Three years later the pair tied the knot in front of friends and family in a winter wonderland themed wedding. To keep the celebration sacred, they made the decision not to sell their wedding shots to a magazine. Just a year later in March 2011, the couple welcomed their first daughter Lyra who was followed two years later by another daughter Margot almost to the day in March of this year. Sophie’s famous heritage made sure that she would be pushed into the spotlight from a young age but it’s her tenacity and drive that has seen her become the well-loved author and personality that she is today. 9

From Dance to Martial Arts – There’s something for everyone!

Anna & Lee... How they met Lee’s words:

I was working in Platinum gym (Puerto Banus) in September 2007 and while on my way to do a private class, I walked past the studio window and saw a beautiful young girl in leggings, doing the splits. I think I did Michael Jackson’s “moon walk” dance and had to do a double-take, she simply took my breath away! I quickly ran to my private client and told him that the cleaner had to polish the floor, so we had to move the other studio – the studio with the beautiful girl. During the class, I asked the beautiful Anna if she could do a stretch “one on one” class with me the following day. Maintaining a strictly professional demeanour, she tortured me during our ‘one on one’ class but afterwards, I asked Anna if she would come out for a romantic dinner. She said yes and the rest, as they say, is history!

Top Holiday Destinations

Now that 2014 is well underway, it’s time to start thinking about this year’s holiday. Here are a few ideas! SKI

Sierra Nevada SPAIN

S

ome may like to get away to warmer climes in the winter months, but those who enjoy nothing more than to strap on their skis or snowboards can revel in the fact that just over two hours from the coast in Marbella, are the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. With 6 ski areas, and 115 runs including green, blue, red and black, there is ample skiing and snowboarding for all types from beginners to the most experienced. Those who are a little more adventurous can also try their hand at night skiing! The village in the resort is a small cluster of great bars, restaurants and places to gather with friends for some après ski and for those who enjoy a good drink or two, many of the bars stay open until the very early hours. There are a number of accommodation options in the resort, you can opt for a self-catering apartment or if you want to be amongst other skiers then choose one of the great hotels. Prices: If you are looking to save money on the hotel then choose something just outside the village such as the Hotel Santa Cruz, which starts from around €50 a night with breakfast included. Or, if you want to be right in the centre of the village then look to one of the Melia hotels, either the Melia Sol y Nieve or the Melia Sierra Nevada where prices start from €290 with breakfast for a night in February. 14

Florida USA

WITH KIDS

T

he fast pace of everyday life can make spending quality time with your family and the kids a little harder and we often find ourselves missing out. That’s why when the time comes for a family holiday, it’s important to make the most out of the time together and Florida has to be the ultimate choice. Understandably it’s not the cheapest holiday idea, especially if you have a large family but if you do make the decision to go then you will not be disappointed and seeing the looks on your children’s faces will be the best reward. Orlando should be your first port of call and with theme parks including Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Universal Studios and Sea World you can enjoy the wildest rides, see the amazing animals and wonder at the magic of cinema. Prices: Flights and Hotel start from £493 pp but if you want to push the boat out then we would recommend the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort where prices start from £867 pp for a week.

ROMANTIC

Capri ITALY

W

hat could be better than rest, relaxation and romance when you head off on holiday with your partner, and La Minerva Hotel in Capri offers just that. The exclusive 18-room boutique hotel is stylishly designed and boasts some of the best views on the island. Every guest is made to feel special and the staff are attentive, friendly and cater for your every need. Whether you want to spend your days together relaxing by the pool sipping cocktails or fancy taking off and exploring the island, this trip will be one that you won’t forget. Capri itself has lots to offer and you can enjoy spending time exploring the island and see the many beautiful areas including the pretty Piazzetta of Capri with its fashionable shopping streets and trattorias where you can grab a drink or bite to eat; and the stunning picturesque beaches with interrupted views of the sea. You can also partake in a boat trip around the island to see its wonders from the sea or take a walk to one of the many viewing points or ruins on the island, which are steeped in history. PARTY

Koh Phangan THAILAND

F

or a party holiday in what we could class as winter months, the only choice should be Koh Phangan and the fabulous full moon parties that they host. These full moon parties have become legendary around the world and every month revellers in their thousands flock to take part in the action. With something for everyone, it has become the ultimate beach party with mc’s and DJ’s pumping out trance, techno, drum and bass, commercial dance, reggae as well as jugglers, fire eaters and fireworks. If all of the dancing has worn you out then you can grab a drink and some local cuisine from one of the many beach traders and relax by the waves as you gather your energy. Staying on the island means you do not need to worry about getting to and from the party and aside from the night you will never forget, the island does have a lot else to offer. Our accommodation recommendation would be the Cocohut Village Beach Resort and Spa which is located on the beach and offers many beach activities, a spa and outdoor swimming pool. The rooms are modern and include all mod-cons and the hotel also has a great restaurant, bar and breakfast buffet. Prices: Rooms at the hotel start from around €40 per night depending on the time of year.

CITY

Istanbul TURKEY

O

ur city break recommendation would certainly be Istanbul, with a bustling city in which two worlds, the east and the west, collide; there is so much to see and do and it’s ideal for a few days escaping from normal life. The capital of Turkey, the city’s 3000 year history is evident wherever you turn and the exotic labyrinth markets, sumptuous street food and the cocktail of culture will certainly keep you entertained. Although the best time to visit is in the spring, you can book your accommodation now and have something to look forward to all through the dull winter months. There are two districts to Istanbul – the Asian side is traditional and has a great atmosphere making it perfect for a stroll through absorbing the culture; but the European side is where most of the must-see attractions are based. Istanbul’s old city of Sultanahmet is a definite visit as is Beyoglu which is renowned for its buzzing nightlife and music scene. The Blue Mosque is definitely the most iconic historical treasure while the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar are markets that you must have a wander through. When staying in Istanbul there is a range of accommodation choices from the budget hostals to the exclusive five star hotels so it is completely up to you what you choose. For all out luxury our choice would be the Eresin Crowne Special Deluxe Hotel which is beautifully designed and has two restaurants and a bar including the terrace restaurant which boasts 360 degree views of the city.

16

Prices: A room at the Eresin Crowne starts from €634 in March for four nights.

BEACH

Cancun MEXICO

F

or a beach holiday in the winter months you may have to look further afield and Cancun is a perfect choice. Famed for its nightlife and white sandy beaches; you can relax and soak up the sun during the day and enjoy a few drinks and dancing at night. Although the flight can be a long one (10 hours from the UK), it is worth it once you get there. The island is split between the North and the East and the beaches in each area vary differently. The North should be the area of choice for those wanting a little more action on their holiday as these beaches are superb for watersports, especially the diving tours and turtle farm that is close to Isla Mujeres. While the East is preferable to relaxation and chill out beaches that are a lot quieter. Do be warned though that the East beaches can get a little windy. There is much accommodation to choose from in Cancun but if you are looking for the ultimate luxury then the Moon Palace Resort has everything you could wish for including beautiful sea views, spa, golf course and wonderful suites and rooms. But, if you don’t want to spend too much then the Omni Cancun Hotel & Villas is also a great choice – with beach access, some wonderful restaurants and sports activities. Prices: For a week staying at the Moon Palace in winter prices based on a couple sharing a room is around €3000, while prices for the Omni Cancun Hotel & Villas start for around €1500 for the same week.

The dark origins of

Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate romance and love. But the origins of this festival of chocolates, roses and cupids are actually dark, bloody — and a bit messed-up. Though no one has pinpointed the exact origin of the holiday, one good place to start is ancient Rome, where men hit on women by, well, hitting them. From February 13 to 15, the Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia. The men sacrificed a goat and a dog, then whipped women with the hides of the animals they had just slain. The Roman romantics “were drunk. They were naked,” says Noel Lenski, a historian at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Young women would actually line up for the men to hit them, Lenski says. They believed this would make them fertile. The brutal fete included a matchmaking lottery, in which young men drew the names of women from a jar. The couple would then be, um, coupled up for the duration of the festival – or longer, if the match was right.

The ancient Romans may also be responsible for the name of our modern day of love. Emperor Claudius II executed two men — both named Valentine — on February 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honoured by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day.

This drawing depicts the death of St. Valentine in the 3rd century A.D. Later, Pope Gelasius I muddled things in the 5th century by combining St. Valentine’s Day with Lupercalia to expel the pagan rituals. But the festival was more of a theatrical interpretation of what it had once been. Lenski adds, “It was a little more of a drunken revel, but the Christians put clothes back on it. That didn’t stop it from being a day of fertility and love.” Around the same time, the Normans celebrated Galatin’s Day. Galatin meant “lover of women.” That was likely confused with St.

Valentine’s Day at some point, in part because they sound alike. William Shakespeare later helped romanticise Valentine’s Day in his work, and it gained popularity throughout Britain and the rest of Europe. Eventually, the tradition made its way to the New World. The industrial revolution ushered in factory-made cards in the 19th century. And in 1913, Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, Missouri, began mass producing valentines. February has not been the same since. Today, the day is big business, raking in millions of pounds even though the commercialisation of it has spoiled the day for many. And so the celebration of Valentine’s Day goes on, in varied ways. Many will break the bank buying jewellery and flowers for their beloveds. Others will celebrate by dining alone and binging on self-gifted chocolates. But thankfully for those few, there is no month-long build up beforehand like we get with Christmas, so the day is here and gone in the blink of an eye. 19

Top Aphrodisiacs

Spark Romance

to

this Valentine’s Day The search for sexy foods is an ancient pursuit, and aphrodisiacs come in many healthy forms — with skins, peels, and shells. And healthy living and romantic meals aren’t mutually exclusive. We’ve rounded up 10 foods considered sexy for their suggestive shape, texture, or colour. Check out these sexy, healthy foods that might just help you get in the mood!

Artichokes It is said that in the Middle Ages, women were forbidden to eat artichokes, due to its blossoming thistles’ aphrodisiac qualities. It was Henry II’s Italian wife Catherine de Medici that broke the artichoke’s gender barrier; she ate them regularly and fed them to her king. The sensual experience of eating an artichoke — stripping the leaves and scraping their flesh with your teeth — was probably not lost on Marilyn Monroe. Before earning the title of “ultimate sex goddess,” the starlet was crowned the first California Artichoke Queen in 1949. Good for your liver as well as your libido, the artichoke is high in fibre and calcium.

20

Asparagus

Basil

Due to its phallic shape, asparagus is said to “stir up lust in man and woman.” Aside from its suggestive form, this veggie is incredibly nutritious. High in vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, and potassium, 19th century French bridegrooms often ate several helpings of asparagus to fortify their manhood for their upcoming honeymoon.

The heady scent of basil has been said to drive men wild. So much so that women have been known to dust their bosoms with dried or powdered versions of this spicy herb. While basil may help increase circulation and promote heart health, it has long been associated with stimulating sex drives and promoting fertility. A fruitful combination, don’t you think?

Figs Due to their high seed content, figs have long been associated with fertility and are considered an aphrodisiac because of their shape and texture. The fig harvest was celebrated by the ancient Greeks with a wild copulation ritual. Remember that the ancient Greeks also created democracy, so maybe they were onto something.

Bananas Avocados Sharing a creamy avocado with your loved one may be just the thing to start any Valentine’s Day meal. Considered an aphrodisiac by the Mayans and Aztecs, it is said to enhance sexual desirability. This fruit is also considered a traditional remedy for erectile dysfunction — holy guacamole!

Due to its shape, the banana seems an obvious choice for a list of healthy, sexy foods. But bananas are also high in bromelain, which some studies have shown enhances male performance. Bananas are also high in potassium and B vitamins — necessities for sex hormone production. On other health issues related to the heart, potassium helps fight high blood pressure.

The avocado is beneficial for body parts above the belt as well. It is high in omega-3 fatty acids, known to promote heart health.

Chocolate We all know the power of chocolate, so it’s no surprise that it’s considered an aphrodisiac. Containing both sedative and stimulative qualities, chocolate relaxes and lowers inhibitions while increasing the desire for physical contact. Chocolate was actually banned from some monasteries centuries ago. The Aztecs knew chocolate as the “nourishment of the Gods,” and their emperor Montezuma ate it before many a romantic interlude. Although researchers believe chocolate’s ability to act as a sexual stimulant is limited, it seems to be the way into many hearts — hence its prominence on Valentine’s Day. Just be sure to make your chocolate dark, since it is considerably healthier than the milk variety.

Strawberries Heart-shaped strawberries are the symbol of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. It’s almost as if these berries are aphrodisiacs by association — the word aphrodisiac is based on the name of Venus’s predecessor, the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. Also known as fruit nipples, strawberries are said to whet one’s sexual appetite. In fact, French newlyweds are served this fruit before embarking on their honeymoons.

Oysters It is not only that oysters are slippery and sensual, they are considered an aphrodisiac because they can change their sex from male to female and back. Oysters understand both the feminine and masculine experience of love.

Carrots The Greek and Romans believed carrots to be a sexual stimulant, most likely due to their phallic shape. Early Middle Eastern royalty considered this tuber, loaded with beta-carotene, antioxidants, and minerals, to be a seduction aid when cooked in sugar. 21

Kim Kardashian’s

booty call Ant & Dec Win Again It may be unlucky for some but Ant and Dec have won their 13th National Television Award for Best Entertainment Presenters. The duo who host a number of shows throughout the year, including I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here, Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and Britain’s Go Talent, won their award over other presenters such as Dermot O’Leary. The pair of cheeky chaps were also given a tribute to their years in entertainment with special words heard from Simon Cowell, Robbie Williams, the Prince of Wales and their own mums!

22

Her bottom is so famous it even has it’s own Twitter account, so when Kim Kardashian needs to alter a pair of jeans for fit her voluptuous derriere, who does she call? None other the $3,000- a-day tailor, Cornelius Clay. The star, who reportedly has a size 4 waist and size 10 bottom has to have every pair of trousers altered so that they fit properly and Clay is the man to do this. At just 23, Clay is one of the younger stylists and tailors to the stars but his notoriety was gained when he met Kanye West by chance and the rap star hired him as a stylist.

The Wanted Split

Boy-Band The Wanted have decided to go their separate ways and ‘take time to pursue personal endeavours’ after their current tour, Word of Mouth, finishes. The band have been quick to stress that they will be doing things as a band in the future but for now wish to take some time and see how they all do on their own. The current craze of bands re-uniting is sure to give the guys some encouragement that they can do the same in the future.

Another Middleton wedding is on the horizon…. Last month Pippa Middleton announced that she had got engaged to her boyfriend when he popped the question while they were holidaying in India. Romance heating up for Valentine’s Day Sean Penn and Charlize Theron

have kept their relatively new relationship under wraps for a while, but now obviously happy to publicise it they have shown some serious PDA’s lately. According to reports the couple are now planning to move in together and Sean has been spending a lot of time with the actress’s son whom she adopted two years ago and is looking forward to being in his life a lot more. Piers Morgan also reported that the Mystic River actor told him that Charlize was a keeper so perhaps we can expect wedding bells soon?

Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross Also getting in the romantic spirit lately are Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross (Diana Ross’s son) who announced their engagement last month. The pair have been friends for years but have only been dating a short while. Singer Ashlee has been married before to rocker Pete Wentz with whom he has son Bronx while Evan’s been relatively private until recently but fans will get a better glimpse of the star when he appears in The Hunger Games third film out later this year.

Tinted Moisturiser, BB, CC or DD Creams? If you have browsed make up counters in department stores lately, chances are you’ve been bombarded by a bewildering array of flesh coloured fluids. The alphabet formulations–like BB cream, CC cream, and soon DD creams–have joined tinted moisturisers and standard foundation on the shelves as potential skin-perfecting options. But what do they all (supposedly) do? What’s the difference between them? And most importantly: Which should you use?

Tinted Moisturiser: The name is pretty self explanatory: The product gives you a bit of colour with a moisturising benefit– the colour is usually pretty sheer. They may be headed for extinction, or at least hibernation. While tinted moisturisers are still on the market and probably still have many fans, there hasn’t really been a new launch for one in quite a while– alphabet creams are all the rage now.

BB Creams: BB creams are an Asian import that have become super popular in the last two years. BB creams provide coverage with added skin care benefits like SPF and anti-oxidants– the list goes on depending on what brand you choose. They’re lighter than foundation but heavier than tinted moisturisers. While the additives in BB creams can have the same efficacy as they would in stand-alone serums, be careful about counting on BB creams 32

for adequate sun protection. The concern is that since BB creams are generally tinted, women use less on their face meaning you won’t slather it on the way you do–or should–with a more traditional sunscreen, resulting in less protection from the sun.

The CC Cream Craze continues to baffle many women CC (colour correcting, colour control or complexion corrector) creams are designed to provide light coverage, SPF protection and colour correcting technology that targets uneven skin tone and dark spots. Although they offer less coverage, CC creams provide more skin care benefits than BB creams and they also help with radiance. Additionally they combat irregular pigmentation with colour adapting pigments. Overall CC creams are designed to tone, hydrate, conceal, protect and treat fine lines. Where it gets most confusing here is that BB/CC benefits and coverage vary greatly among different brands. For example, Clinique’s CC cream is definitely more opaque than some BB creams from other brands. You have to be diligent in reading ingredients and most importantly, trying them out to figure out what you want and need.

And finally, DD Creams, apparently the Holy Grail of all! What it is:

A multifunctional corrective beauty balm with self-adjusting coverage and mineral-based, broadspectrum SPF 30 protection.

And if that’s not enough! it is formulated without Parabens, Sulfates, and Phthalates.

What it is formulated to do:

So there you go. Hopefully this helps shed some light on the topic. Just be sure to pick a brand wisely as they do differ greatly in terms of coverage amongst the different brands.

- An all-purpose, mineral-based beauty balm - Features SPF 30 sun protection - Comes in one shade The alphabet soup stops here - DD does it all. This Dermatologists’ Dream Cream defines, delays, defends, delights, and delivers. It provides 15 healthy skin benefits, a mineral based SPF 30, and a white sapphire complex that brings out the beauty of everyone’s unique skintone. No skintone matching to product shade is required: the white sapphire complex is selfadjusting and brings out and enhances the beauty of one’s own unique skintone beauty. It infuses skin with a dermatologist developed beautifying cocktail that leaves skin healthy and naturally gorgeous. Additional benefits include: self-adjusting coverage; anti aging; hydrating; defending; evening skin tone; minimizing pores; blemish soothing; reducing redness; firming; brightening; priming; enhancing vibrancy; refining; mattifying; and nourishing.

does not want you to know Germs are everywhere

They make things up

While most makeup counter artists and salespeople clean the makeup brushes (a common breeding ground for bacteria) after they use them from one customer to the next, you can never really trust any brush that isn’t yours. But “it’s not the brushes consumers should worry about, it’s really the products themselves. No matter how many times a day the sales rep cleans them, people love to come stick their dirty fingers in the colours to test them. Women walk right up to the counter, grab a lipstick tester and put it right to their lips.

Cosmetic training in a department store or beauty supply focuses mostly on sales and not about product knowledge, which is unfortunate. They do learn mediocre product information, but that doesn’t come until several months after working there, so they spend the first couple months making stuff up or sharing their limited experience. Most beauty advisors know a little more than what the average woman does about beauty, and the ones that make “good money” off commissions are “sales people, not beauty experts.”

They pretend to be something they’re not They play on your insecurities Do you feel special when a salesperson says you are pretty or goes on about how great your skin is? Well, for the most part, they are complimenting everyone.

36

Usually if a sales person compliments you, you open up about what you are looking for. Women are generally “shy and self-conscious” and so with a little “boost” from a sales person, you are more likely to talk to her about your skin or makeup concerns and buy products.

Walking through a department store you’ll realise that sometimes the salespeople look more like doctors than makeup artists. This is a planned scheme to convince you they are “experts.” The lab coats and charts are a marketing tool. They give the illusion that the sales force are estheticians, research scientists and keep their area clean. If they were experts, they would not be working at the counter. Experts on beauty are actually providing services in salons and developing new skin care technology in a lab. The free makeover is NOT free One of the biggest selling points of visiting the makeup counter is the “free makeover,” but what

salespeople don’t tell you upfront is that the makeover isn’t really free. Makeup artists at counters work on commission. So although you’re not obligated to buy anything, it is expected. Technically it’s free, but they invest their time hoping you will become their next big customer. It’s like tipping – if you don’t tip your waiter, no one is going to come after you yelling and waving their fist, but you would leave feeling guilty. It’s just not courteous to get a free makeover when you have no intention of buying.

They judge you based on the products you use Often when you chat with a beauty counter salesperson about makeup or your skin care, they will ask you what products you are currently using. This serves two purposes: They can judge how much money you might spend with them and then they can assess how much time to spend on you.

They keep an eye out for sample scavengers You can and should be asking your beauty counter salespeople to try samples of products before you buy them, but do know that they are taking note of how much you are “sampling” and how much you are actually buying. Some beauty advisors have an on-going mysterious hostility with their customers and will not waste product on someone who won’t buy.

They keep their mouths shut There are certain things brands won’t want to tell you about the product if you don’t know to ask about it. If an ingredient in a product you are interested in “has scared the public,” like for example the media scare over parabens, the salesperson won’t mention the present ingredient when selling it to you.

Foods to avoid after a workout If you workout and you want to get a lean body, then you surely know that exhausting yourself in the gym will not do you much good: for the best results, you must combine cardio and weight training with a balanced, nutritious and healthy diet. There are foods and supplements people are advised to consume prior to the workout, to give them an energy boost and to help them improve their focus. On the other hand, there are several foods that wreak havoc both on your health and on your waistline, and it would be a shame to ruin your workout progress for a late-night food crave. Here are some of the worst postworkout foods that you should avoid at all costs:

7

Salty snacks of all kinds It is not uncommon to feel the need for something salty after your workout, given the fact that when you sweat your body eliminates nutrients along with water (including potassium). You can opt for a healthy meal and replenish your potassium levels quickly and naturally, without using salt tablets or salty snacks, as they are usually high in calories. Instead of snacks, eat a banana or some dry pieces of fruits. Bananas are known for their high amounts of potassium, and they are surely a healthier alternative to snacks.

3 7

Sugary products and fizzy drinks

There is no bigger mistake one can make after a workout than eating sugary products or drinking fizzy drinks. You workout because you want to shed the excess fat and to get a ripped body: having said that, why eat sugary products knowing that they contain plenty of calories? Sugar is known for its devastating long-term effects on the body, and one of

38

these side effects is slowing down the metabolism. Your metabolism plays an important role in the weight loss process: the faster your metabolism, the faster you will get the body you have always dreamed of. Always read the labels of the products you are about to consume, and avoid sugary products. On the other hand, fizzy drinks are equally harmful as they cause bloating. If you really feel the need to drink something other than water and natural fruit juice is not an option, then go for unsweetened ice tea. This will keep you hydrated and will calm the cravings.

7

energy and it burns a significant amount of calories: raw vegetables alone will certainly not help you supplement the loss of precious nutrients, vitamins and minerals. In other words, your post workout meal should not consist exclusively of raw vegetables, you need some extra fibre and protein to support the muscle development. Vegetables are great, healthy and low in fat, but they are simply not good enough as post-workout recovery foods because they cannot help you maintain a steady metabolic rate.

Fatty foods and snacks

This is an obvious point, but many bodybuilders and regular people who workout just to stay in shape binge on fatty foods right after they workout. Avoid fast foods, fatty snacks, oily foods, chips and such. Do not forget that your main goal is to reduce the overall amount of fat, not to increase it. At the same time, your body needs to produce more glycogen, an important substance produced and stored in the muscles and liver. Fatty foods will surely not come in handy for that, not to mention that they will also elevate your levels of LDL cholesterol (also known as the “bad cholesterol) and they will put you at high risk for heart disease in the long run.

7

Raw vegetables

While it is true that raw fruits and vegetables should not be missed from a healthy diet, it is important to have a healthy and balanced diet, not to focus exclusively on vegetables. During the workout, your body uses almost all its

7

Pastries

While it is true that pastries will make you feel full for longer, they are certainly not a great meal choice after a workout. Your body needs high-quality carbohydrates to replace the lost glycogen during the workout, and although pastries are full of carbs, they are not a reliable or healthy source of nutrients given the fact that they carry a lot of carbs. Rather than that, opt for whole wheat toast or dry fruits, as mentioned above. Avoid pastries and donuts at all costs.

3 7 7

Milk chocolate

Milk chocolate is known to contain hundreds of calories but, on the other hand, if you consume milk chocolate in moderation it can actually benefit you. As a matter of fact, studies have revealed that milk chocolate and dark chocolate can improve your memory and boost the cognitive function. Moreover, dark chocolate has antioxidants that lower the risk for cancer and also fight the free radicals that damage your body cells: if you have a sweet tooth, it is highly recommended to consume chocolate before the workout, rather than after the workout. This way, you will get the chance to burn the extra calories and indulge yourself with a sweet delight, it’s a win-win! In spite of its health benefits, chocolate is simply not an inspired choice after a hardcore workout because it will not give you the nutrients you need to recharge your body after intense training.

Energy bars

Last, but not least, energy bars are designed to give you the fuel and energy you need before the workout, not after the workout: unfortunately, many people seem to confuse these aspects and to eat the energy bars after an intense training session. As you may already know, these bars are filled with sugar which decreases your metabolism and stimulates the production of fat. Besides, the bars will also increase your energy levels, which means that you will have a hard time falling asleep at night, if you eat them after the evening workout.

These are seven of the worst post-workout foods that can wreak havoc on your weight and get you back to where you started. Rather than consuming the foods mentioned above, focus on high-quality meals that will give you the proteins and carbohydrates your body needs. 39

Top F tness Trends for 2014

If losing weight was on your New Year’s resolution list, here’s some good news: fulfilling that goal might not mean long hours at the gym. Shorter and highintensity workouts are the top fitness trend for this year, according to the American College of Sport Medicine’s Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2014.

High-Intensity Workouts While being offered as a possible trend in previous surveys but not making the top 20, high-intensity interval training was No. 1 in the survey for 2014. Despite the warnings by health and fitness professionals of increased injury rates using high-intensity interval training, this form of exercise has become popular in gyms all over the world. High-intensity interval training usually takes 30 minutes to complete and typically involves short bursts of powerful exercise followed by a brief recovery. While the time necessary for the training make it an attractive workout option, survey respondents did point out the high rate of injuries associated with the workouts and the need for more trained professional teaching the classes. Examples of these programmes include the P90X at home workout and CrossFit, which you can find at some gyms and fitness facilities.

Body Weight Training Those looking to get in shape without paying for a gym membership are in luck. Body weight training ranked as the second most popular trend for 2014. This type of workout uses your own body weight to get in shape through exercises like push-ups, pull-ups and squats. If you aren’t well versed in body weight workouts, there are many lowcost apps to help you out. The Bodyweight Training: You Are Your Own Gym app provides more than 200 exercises and a 10-week fitness programme that takes less than 40 minutes a day. The Gorilla Workout app offers no-equipment workouts that combine cardio and strength training to achieve the best results in the shortest amount of time using your own body weight. Just like in fashion, trends in the fitness world come and go. Zumba, which ranked No. 13 in 2013, fell off the top 20 list for 2014 along with pilates, spinning, stability ball and balance training. However, some of the survey respondents still argue that the persistent sluggish economy has influenced the results of this survey and that focused training programmes that require expensive equipment or technical instruction are not supported because of the increased cost.

The Benefits of Massage By Grant Foster, Clinical Sports Massage Therapist

Well, here we are again, the start of a new year, and some of you no doubt will be embarking on a new fitness regime. Most of you will be thinking about your training routines and how to keep your body in shape. One of the best ways to look after our body is with a regular deep massage. But before we go onto the ways in which massage can help, we need to dispel one myth: When your muscles are sore it is not a result of a build up of lactic acid. Lactic acid is a by-product of the bodies energy system when it is working at a maximum capacity. It functions in an anaerobic system (meaning without oxygen). This lasts 1 to 2 minutes depending on how well trained you are. Soreness is a result of your training and overstretching and stimulation of muscle fibres, it is known as D.O.M.S.- Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. So if a massage therapist says that they are going to flush the lactic acid out it is not true. The body will re-synthesize this system within 4 hours of exercise. So getting back to how massage can help the body. First we will look at some general things, and also how science is now helping with evidence of things we knew anecdotally.

Body Building

For people doing heavy weight training, massage can enhance your performance. The effects of hard training can impair development and reduce you

gaining mass. It can help develop a more proportional and symmetrical physique as well as helping stage presence.

Range of Motion

Muscle tightness can affect the range of motion. Training with tight muscles invariably leads to injury. Massage stretches bundles of muscle fibres lengthways and sideways, it can also shorten or lengthen muscle to improve elasticity. Massage treatments help release tension and pressure by stretching the sheath or fascia around the muscles. Muscular scar tissue reduces flexibility and can increase the risk of injury and pain. Massage can help break down scar tissue caused by over training, trauma and previous injuries.

Recovery

Muscles need an increase in the supply of nutrients to repair damage and grow for body building. Deep massage enhances the recovery time by increasing nutrient flow and muscle tissue permeability and opening microcirculation. A deep massage increases tissue permeability by opening pores that enable fluids and nutrients to pass through more effectively. This also helps to remove waste products that accumulate while training and inhibit muscle contraction.

Scientific Research

Science is now making big impacts into validating the effects of massage. Various studies over the last 10 years have shown that deep massage helps in several ways.

Immune System

In 2010 Cedars Medical Centre L.A. showed that massage increased the number of lymphocytes and produces measurable biological effects. If replicated, these findings may have implications for managing inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, and that was only after one massage. Stress – Int. J. Neuroscience 2005 The research here shows positive effects of massage on biochemistry and reviewed decreased levels of cortisol and increased levels of dopamine and serotonin. The study suggests the stress alleviating effects of massage on a variety of medical conditions and stressful experiences.

Muscle Repair

Two recent studies, one by the University of Granada (2009) and one in the journal of Science Translation and Medicine (2012). The first shows how massage can benefit people recovering between high-intensity training sessions or competitions on the same day. The other shows a reduced production in the cells, which contribute to inflammation, and by contrast an increased stimulation of mitochondria, which aid in cell repair and function. Massage appears to actually help the muscle adapt to increased amounts of exercise.

I hope this article will be of some benefit to all those embarking on a new exercise programme and trying to keep their body fully functioning.

about

Excessive sugar in the diet is not the best idea when it comes to healthy living. Nonetheless, few of us are consuming sugar in recommended moderate amounts and most of us are eating tons of it. In fact, worldwide we are consuming about 500 extra calories a day from sugar. That’s just about what you would need to consume if you wanted to gain a pound a week. Most people know that sugar is not good for them, but for some reason, they think the risk of excess sugar consumption is less than that of having too much saturated and trans fat, sodium or calories. Perhaps it’s sugar’s lack of sodium or fat that make it the “lesser of several evils,” or perhaps people are simply of the mind frame that what they don’t know won’t hurt them. If you really knew what it was doing to your body, though, you might just put it at the top of your “foods to avoid” list. Here are a few things that may surprise you about sugar.

1. Sugar can damage your heart While it’s been widely noted that excess sugar can increase the overall risk for heart disease, a 2013 study in the Journal of the American Heart Association displayed strong evidence that sugar can actually affect the pumping mechanism of your heart and could increase the risk for heart failure. The findings specifically pinpointed a molecule from sugar (as well as from starch) called glucose metabolite glucose 6-phosphate (G6P) that was responsible for the changes in the muscle protein of the heart. These changes could eventually lead to heart failure. Approximately half of the people that are diagnosed with heart failure die within five years.

2. Sugar specifically promotes belly fat Adolescent obesity rates have tripled in the past 30 years and childhood obesity rates have doubled. Many of us are aware of the data that demonstrates just how literally big our future is looking, but beyond the studies and all the initiatives to curb childhood obesity, one needs only to visit an amusement park, school or mall to truly see what is happening. One factor that seems to inflict obese children is fat accumulation in the trunk area of the body. Why? One cause may be the increase in fructose-laden beverages. A 2010 study in children found that excess fructose intake (but not glucose intake) actually caused visceral fat cells to mature -setting the stage for a big belly and even bigger future risk for heart disease and diabetes.

3. Sugar is the true silent killer Move over salt and hypertension, you’ve got competition. Sugar, as it turns out, is just as much of a silent killer. A 2008 study found 48

that excess fructose consumption was linked to an increase in a condition called leptin resistance. Leptin is a hormone that tells you when you’ve had enough food. The problem is, we often ignore the signal our brain sends to us. For some people though, leptin simply does not want to work, leaving the person with no signal whatsoever that the body has enough food to function. This in turn can lead to over consumption of food and consequently, obesity. Why the silent killer? Because it all happens without symptoms or warning bells. If you’ve gained weight in the past year and can’t quite figure out why, perhaps you should look at how much fructose you’re feeding your body.

4. Sugar may be linked to cancer production and may effect cancer survival In the world of nutrition, it’s hard to talk about sugar without talking about insulin. That’s because insulin is sugar’s little chaperone to the cells, and when too much of it is consumed, or our insulin does not work (probably because we’re eating too much sugar) and the body revolts. One connection that has been well documented in the literature is the link between insulin resistance and cancer . A 2013 study found that sugars in the intestine triggered the formation of a hormone called GIP (controlled by a protein called β-catenin that is completely dependant on sugar levels), that in turn, increases insulin released by the pancreas. Researchers found that β-catenin may in fact affect the cells susceptibility to cancer formation. Further studies have found negative associations between high sugar and starch intake and survival rates in both breast cancer patients and colon cancer patients.

5. Your sugar “addiction” may be genetic If you’ve ever said, “I’m completely addicted to sugar,” you may actually be correct. A recent study of 579 individuals showed that those who had genetic changes in a hormone called ghrelin consumed more sugar (and alcohol) than those that had no gene variation. Ghrelin is a hormone that tells the brain you’re hungry. Researchers think that the genetic components that effect your ghrelin release may have a lot to do with whether or not you seek to enhance a neurological reward system through your sweet tooth. Findings with this study were similar to study conducted in 2012 as well.

6. Sugar and alcohol have similar toxic liver effects on the body A 2012 paper in the journal Nature, brought forth the idea that limitations and warnings should be placed on sugar similar to warnings we see on alcohol. The authors showed evidence that fructose and glucose in excess can have a toxic effect on the liver as the metabolism of ethanol -- the alcohol contained in alcoholic beverages had similarities to the metabolic pathways that fructose took. Further, sugar increased the risk for several of the same chronic conditions that alcohol was responsible for. Finally, if you think that your slim stature keeps you immune from fructose causing liver damage, think again. A 2013 study found that liver damage could occur even without excess calories or weight gain.

7. Sugar may sap your brain power When I think back on my childhood, I remember consuming more sugar than I probably should have. I should have enjoyed my youth back then, because unfortunately, all the sugar may have accelerated the aging process. A 2009 study found a positive relationship between glucose consumption and the aging of our cells. Aging of the cells consequently can be the cause of something as simple as wrinkles to something as dire as chronic disease. But there is other alarming evidence that sugar may affect the aging of your brain as well. A 2012 study found that excess sugar consumption was linked to deficiencies in memory and overall cognitive health. A 2009 study in rats showed similar findings.

8. An overload of sugar (specifically in beverages) may shorten your life A 2013 study estimated that 180,000 deaths worldwide may be attributed to sweetened beverage consumption. The United States alone accounted for 25,000 deaths in 2010. The authors summarize that deaths occurred due to the association with sugar-sweetened beverages and chronic disease risk such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

It’s important to point out that simple sugars from milk (in the form of lactose) don’t display the same negative health effects that we see in the literature when reviewing sugar’s effects on the body. Simple sugars coming from fruit are also less concerning given their high amounts of diseasefighting compounds and fibre. So now you know, and knowing perhaps can create action. You can do something about decreasing your overall sugar consumption without feeling deprivation or sheer frustration! 49

Detox Foods Our bodies have a natural detox system that gets rid of toxins that it accumulates from foods and the environment. Many people feel that helping our body do its natural job is an important way to maintain good health, and it is hard to argue with that. Below are some natural foods for detox that you can use to help your body eliminate toxins. WATER

CELERY Celery has a few detox properties. It helps to purify the blood, clear out uric acid from the joints, and stimulate the thyroid and pituitary glands. Celery also acts as a diuretic.

CABBAGE Cabbage has antiinflammatory properties and has long been used as a remedy for ulcers. It also contains lactic acid, which helps to disinfect the colon.

GARLIC

ONION

The onion is by far the most important bulb vegetable in terms of healing properties and detox properties. It can cause the body to ‘weep’ which helps to release toxins through the skin. In addition, it cleanses the intestines.

APPLES

Research has shown that apples are excellent at detoxifying the body; even apple juice that is store bought can help eliminate viruses in the body. They are known for helping rid intestinal parasites, treating skin problems, aiding in inflammation of the bladder, and preventing liver issues. It is interesting to note that many people going through drug detox take pectin. This includes drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and marijuana.

Garlic is the king of detox. Garlic contains a chemical called allicin, which helps to remove toxins and promote healthy white blood cells. It also helps to rid the colon of many types of parasites by activating gastric juices. Garlic also cleanses the respiratory system and purifies the blood. Garlic is also said to help the body get rid of nicotine, and can be a great addition to your diet when you quit smoking. 50

This is an essential element to help your body rid itself of toxins as well as to keep all natural processes in the body running normally. For example, when it comes to detox, water transports wastes around the body through the blood (blood is about 80 per cent water).

BEETS

ARTICHOKE

This is another food that is beneficial for the liver. Artichokes have been shown to purify the liver and increase bile production. In addition, they have a diuretic effect on the kidneys, which helps to flush out toxins.

These are a natural way to detoxify the liver. Therefore, you are giving your liver some extra help to detox the body. Beets, like apples, contain pectin. Because of this, many medical professional actually encourage patients to eat non-juiced beets so that they can experience the benefit from the fibre.

The liver is where all of the harmful toxins and chemicals go, as it is like the body’s deposit for all the rubbish. When the liver gets too full of rubbish, it tends to have problems. Milk thistle contains flavonoids, which is one of the best antioxidants to help get rid of toxins. Milk thistle also helps your liver by stabilising the cell membranes, stimulating the synthesis of protein, and causing the regeneration of damaged liver tissue to happen much more quickly. The milk thistle is a plant that is native to the south of Europe, the south of Russia, North Africa, and both the Americas. Milk thistle is a plant that has been used for millennia to help deal with liver problems, and it has been proven to be very effective in liver treatment. The name of the thistle comes from the fluid that is released when the thistle’s leaves are crushed, the fluid being a sort of pale white that reminded the people who named the plant of milk.

What is the Milk Thistle Liver Detox? The milk thistle liver detoxifying diet uses the milk thistle to help detoxify all of the chemicals and toxic garbage that accumulates in the body. The milk thistle gets rid of this toxic sludge very effectively, and you may find that it is exactly what you need if your liver is suffering from any of the symptoms of liver damage. Even if you are just trying to stay in good health, you may want to consider the milk thistle liver detoxifying supplements, as they will help to get rid of all the harmful toxins and chemicals in your body and help restore you to good health.

What Does it Do? A milk thistle liver detoxification helps to cleanse all of the toxins from your liver. By taking a milk thistle supplement, you can help to cleanse your liver and take out the rubbish that is all the toxins in your body, helping to boost your body’s resistance to diseases and disorders of the liver.

Where can you find Milk Thistle Supplements? Visit any health food shop on the coast and they should have it. Or if you are going back to the UK at some point, Boots have a great range. Alternatively, there is also a decent range of milk thistle supplements on the internet especially on sites such as amazon. Remember the exact amount of milk thistle will vary from supplement to supplement, so always be sure to read the package label before consumption. 53

Homestyle Inspiration for your

HomeDecor Styling and interior design trends can change depending on season and location but we’ve picked out our top design trends that we predict will be big this year… and if they’re not, well they’ll still make your house look stylish! It’s all just drama dahling…

Flowers, flowers everywhere… Perhaps not the best choice for a bachelor pad, but for couples and single gals then we think the floral print will be a big design trend this year and with so many different ways to incorporate it, it is both versatile and beautiful. For those who are more adventurous when redesigning a room, choose floral wallpaper and add it to one wall in the room. Then pick out one colour in the wallpaper and paint the other walls in this colour to create a harmony to the room. If you don’t feel that brave then don’t despair, you can choose cushions or curtains in your favourite blossom print and add them to give a refreshed look to your home. 54

We think that this year it’s all about adding some drama to a certain room in the house… Move over white or even the dreaded magnolia walls, now is the time to add a hint of glamour and choose a strong colour to cover the walls. Think deep red, dark green or even black (although we suggest just painting one wall black, not the whole room or it may resemble a dungeon) and accent with metallic accessories, think copper candles and bronze photo frames, that will have every guest gaping with admiration at your bold choice.

some brightly coloured accents, such as pink, purple or turquoise to your cushions, bedding and curtains. This way as the seasons change, so can the colours in your home.

It’s ok to feel a little blue…

The Bright, the Bold and the Beautiful… Neutral tones are an easy colour palette to use when decorating your home, but this year add in

This year’s biggest colour, we think, is going to be blue… it doesn’t matter which hue of blue you choose as the pastel tones, navy and the brightest turquoise will all keep you up-to-date on the design trend. If you decide to do a whole room, then we’d suggest choosing one colour, such as navy for all of the big furniture and furnishings and then add in lighter pastel tones

YOUR DANISH CURTAIN AND INTERIOR DÉCOR PROFESSIONAL ON THE COAST Quality and Service

• Curtains • Fabrics • Wallpapers • Soft furnishings • Wall-to-wall carpets • Upholstery • Blinds and awnings

for cushions and the curtains. However, if you wanted to add hints of blue all over the house then you could do it quite easily with touches of different shades here and there.

Open up… Although this trend has been around for a while now, we think that open-plan living is the way forward and is going to stay that way. With so much sun throughout the year here in Andalucia, many people are now choosing to design their home in a way that gives them more time to spend with family. With walls being knocked down and kitchens extended into living areas, open-plan living gives you the chance to interact with friends and family whichever room you are in. And, it’s not just the inside rooms that are opening up… the emphasis is also on bringing the inside out and indulging in large living spaces outdoors for entertaining and relaxing.

Food & Drink

Top trends for eating out in 2014 Wondering what delights will be on the menus of restaurants this year? We have researched the top food trends that you are likely to see coming to restaurants near you. US-style barbecues While the US-style of barbecue continues to take the UK by storm, a different style will also take hold this year that has its roots in Middle Eastern, Italian and Spanish cooking. Restaurants in London are leading the charge, recreating Greek, Turkish, Albanian and Iranian recipes on its outside barbecue, while brand new restaurants are opening up following the trend. Will Marbella be next? Restaurants are mimicking Tuscany and Spain’s Basque country cooking and using single-species charcoal and half-wood, half-charcoal mixes for different smoke flavours. Will Iberico pork ribs be the baby back ribs of 2014? We hope so. 58

The Toastie Yes, the good old toastie! Like the burger, the toastie is experiencing something of a renaissance as restaurants once again recognise the magic of serving stuff between two slices of grilled bread. Manhattan Cafés are serving up a storm with these melting marvels and so cities around the world are following the trend. From black pudding toasties found in London’s Cafés to simple Spanish ham and cheese toasties found on our doorstep, the toastie is always a great choice for a simple, light yet ever so satisfying lunch.

The infamous ‘Burrito’ So far the burrito trend in the UK has been dominated by the typical Tex-Mex variety, but that is set to change this year. New chains are opening up serving up the traditional burrito but with a twist. Coleslaw, relishes etc are all the rage, along with Korean and Greek style Burritos. The Indian burrito chain Wrapchic is expanding too due to its popularity of Indian Burritos. Basically anything you fancy to eat, you will be able to get in a burrito!

Michelin Star Sports Bars Don’t fancy watching a game in your local pub for fear of getting sweaty, shirtless and drunken football fans giving you an ear ache? Thankfully this year we are likely to see the rise of sport-friendly establishments that cater for a more discerning sports fan. Two Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge says he wants to open the first Michelin-starred pub that shows SKY TV, and other sporty operators are upping their game with craft beers and proper food. Oh we can’t wait!

Fresh cheese made on the premises The trend of chefs making their own butter has taken a logical development with many now turning their hand to the art of cheese making. This approach isn’t the preserve of single-site, top-end restaurants either. The chain Made in Italy, which operates sites across London, for example, makes its own ricotta, burrata and mozzarella, while Café Royal in London has bespoke cheeses made for it.

cream that has risen to the top. Add this and the paste to the pot, lower the heat and cook gently for about 5 minutes. Add the water, the remaining coconut milk, the cinnamon and bay leaves and cook, covered on a steady simmer for 1 hour.

5. Add the potatoes and continue to cook for another

30 minutes or until the meat and potatoes are tender. You may need to add a little water to the curry as it is cooking. Season to taste with a little fish sauce, palm sugar and tamarind paste or lemon juice.

To serve: Garnish with roasted, crushed peanuts, sliced spring onions and coriander sprigs. Serve with steamed basmati or jasmine rice.

Ferrari 458 Speciale The Ferrari 458 Speciale joins the Ferrari range alongside the 458 Italia and 458 Spider and, like all special-series Ferraris, is aimed at a specific kind of owner, in this case those looking for an even more focused sports car that offers extreme driving emotions.

64

The Farrari 458 Speciale...

Whether on the road or on the track, drivers will feel immediately at one with the 458 Speciale thanks to the speed with which it responds to every input and the consequently natural control that it offers, even in extreme manoeuvres. This finely tuned handling balance enables the car to reach the highest performance levels of any Ferrari V8. Ferrari’s core engineering philosophy centres around pushing the envelope with each new model whilst maintaining the innate chassis balance and handling that ensures that even non-professional drivers can extract maximum performance and driving pleasure. With the new Ferrari 458 Speciale all clients will be able to drive on the limit on the track as well as experience the exhilaration of genuinely sporty driving even at lower speeds on demanding roads. The new berlinetta is, in fact, the result of the search for extreme technology, driving thrills and performance, with the application of advanced technical solutions for the powertrain, aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics. Those achievements set it apart from the 458 Italia from which it is derived, to an extent unprecedented in the previous Challenge Stradale and 430 Scuderia special series.

Lexus GS The fourth generation

The Lexus GS 300h will also be available as an F SPORT version, featuring bespoke design elements and model-specific technologies for an even more engaging drive.

68

The fourth generation Lexus GS first went on sale in Europe in 2012 as a three-model range comprising the GS 250, the GS 350 AWD and the high-performance flagship, the full hybrid GS 450h. Now a fourth model has been added to the range, the Lexus GS 300h. Positioned at the heart of the E-Premium segment, the new GS 300h will reinforce Lexus’ appeal to the fleet market, representing an attractive alternative to 2.0 litre diesel engine rivals. The Lexus GS 300h is expected to account for more than 55% of all GS sales, a significant part of that percentage representing fleet customers. With the IS 300h on the market since summer of 2013 and the new CT 200h launched early this year, the GS 300h will bring new strength to Lexus’ line-up of full hybrid vehicles in three core market segments: C, D and E Premium.

Ma nageria l T h e Managerial The

Merry-Go-Round HHH

Wow, what a couple of months it’s been since I did my last predictions... With a massive cull of managers in December, the league is reeling from all the coming and going. Andre villas Boas

OUT Tim od Sherwo

IN

The biggest victim of the management cuts was undoubtedly Andre Villas Boas from Tottenham Hotspur with Tim Sherwood taking over the reins. Villas Boas is a good manager but he’s still young and personally as he is still so young I feel that his early success has gone to his head a little. Ego can be a problem sometimes with managers and they cut players out or play in a certain way in order to prove a point, that some of them fall foul of their Ego means they only have themselves to blame. But it doesn’t help the club and it takes a good chairman to realise the problems and either have a word with the manager or get rid. Villas Boas seemed to ignore Daniel Levy and so he was up for the chop. The feelings of the Tottenham camp was that when things went right Andre Villas Boas took the glory and when things went wrong he blamed everyone else; not very good for team morale basically. His stubbornness of not playing Emmanuel 72

Adebayor when his team was not scoring goals was also a sign of mad ego and so after a sound thrashing by Liverpool, the writing was on the wall. First thing Sherwood did was bring Adebayor back and change to an attacking formation and Spurs are back in the hunt for 4th. Villas Boas has since argued that he had nothing to do with bringing in at least 4 of the players that were signed in the summer; that one of them was Christian Eriksen who has been playing a blinder under Sherwood seems to be ignored by Villas Boas. His signing of Soldado has a goal strike rate of just 6% from open play as well, so perhaps he’s not that suited to getting the best players either.

Malkey Mackay

OUT

Ole G u Solks nnar jaer

IN

Cardiff sacked Malkey Mackay and while this seems somewhat harsh as he got them promoted, he did so on Vincent Tan’s money and Cardiff wouldn’t be where they are now without Tan. He buys the club and he can do what he wants with it. And the fans have no real say in the matter. If he withdraws his money just watch the team plunge out of the premiership.

Mackay’s main problem was that he spent nearly 50 million of Tan’s money on crap players. All of them have underachieved and with them hovering just above the relegation zone I can see why Tan got rid. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer taking over who might just save them. They’re still relegation candidates in my book but they might just survive with Solskjaer.

Steve Clarke

OUT West Brom surprisingly sacked Steve Clarke and results haven’t improved. Incredibly harsh considering Clarke got West Brom to 8th last year and just behind Liverpool. With the dressing room gobsmacked as well, the board may come to regret their decision.

Martin Jol

OUT R Meul ene enste

IN

en

Jol got sacked from Fulham and the new man Rene Meulensteen was at least able to change things around. After being thrashed 6-0 by Hull City, Rene changed 7 players and went on to beat West Ham. Though Jol probably could have steered them clear he seemed to have lost the dressing room and once that happens, there’s no turning back. I Hol an low ay

OUT

Future sackings?

So for now that’s it, but there are plenty of other managers who are at risk of the chop. The most obvious is Sam Allardyce at West Ham. And as I write this, Captain Kevin Nolan has just got a further 4 match ban which can only harm the club further. If West Ham do well in the FA Cup then Sam might survive January but an early exit and a continued bad run will only mean one thing. After that, Norwich and Stoke must be looking at their managers with close scrutiny but I think Chris Hughton and Mark Hughes might just survive.

David Moyes

?

And what about at the top? y Ton s Puli

IN

Crystal Palace sacked Ian Holloway who did a similar sin as Mackay at Cardiff. He brought in 14 new players who were pretty useless rather than trust the team that got promoted and strengthened with a few wise buys who would have brought quality rather than quantity to the team. That Palace have brought in ex Bolton manager, Tony Pulis has the nous to steer them clear to safety.

HH

Well when I say top I really mean top half and there’s one obvious candidate that is under pressure and they don’t come much bigger than the man running Manchester United. With 6 loses by January and with a woeful record against top 10 clubs beating just one in Arsenal then unless Moyes buys big in January then a place in Europe is under threat let alone a Champions league place. All talks of title have long since gone. One thing is for sure, if they don’t improve and buy real quality, United’s normal surge up the table will simply not happen. Current statistics say their form means ninth at the end of the season. But even if they do better than that, financially missing out on the Champions league would be a major financial disaster for United and with Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle and Spurs all looking in far better condition than United at the moment then Moyes must be getting very nervous indeed.

HH H 73

Luis Suarez

What a difference 6 months makes! Roundly vilified by the press, booed by his fellow professionals at the Annual Player of the Year Awards and booed by just about every other supporter in the land apart from supporters of Liverpool. And even then he was pushing it.

Player Profile Age: 27 Born: Salto, Uruguay Marital Status: Married Salary: 6.24 million GBP Club: Liverpool

Playing in the Olympics last summer, press releases through his agent seemed that Suarez was on his way. He wasn’t happy of the lack of Champions League football and he had supposedly been promised that he would be allowed to leave. This disputed contract came up again with the supposed release clause of over 40 million pounds. When Arsenal came in with a 40 million plus one pound offer, it deeply embarrassed Arsenal, where even Liverpool owner ‘John Henry’ tweeted ‘what are they smoking at the Emirates?’ Despite all this; the Liverpool supporters ignored all this speculation and continued to cheer him. This in itself made a huge impression on the player and since his very first game he’s been virtually unplayable. Missing the first 6 games of the season, many would have predicted a slow start to get scoring again. Not so, and from mid September all he can do is score goals. By the end of 2013 he joined Sheared and Andy Cole as joint top scorers in the premier league with 19 and as of mid January he’s already on 22. Seeing this form, Liverpool rewarded him with a new contract and doubled his wages to 200 grand a week. It also pointed out quite clearly how much any release deal would be, ranging from 100 million for a non-English club to 130 million for an English club to buy. If Champions league isn’t achieved then Suarez can leave for a measly 70 million. With Manchester City as favourites to win the league and Chelsea to finish runners up, then the other 2 Champions League places are up for grabs. Will Liverpool be there? Arsenal will be up there but it should be interesting to see how they get on without Theo Walcott and how they also deal with their annual bad patch in February. With Manchester United on the wane, the early promise of Newcastle and Southampton now fading, there lies Everton and Spurs in the hunt for that all important 4th place. The injury to Ross Barclay may prove damaging to Everton and Spurs haven’t exactly been firing on all cylinders either. If Suarez keeps scoring like he has done so far, then with Champions League football guaranteed for Liverpool, we’ll have to get used to Suarez terrorising Premier league defences for a few more years to come.

Rugby

Rugby Union

Six Nations

Wales are the overwhelming favourites for the 6 nations of 2014. They are the defending champions and are the team in the best form at the moment.

WALES Warren Gatland has quite a few decisions to make this year as he has so much talent to choose from, including the likes of George North, Sam Warburton and Leigh Halfpenny. But pure talent doesn’t make a team and Gatland has to make the right choices to get the team just right. The Rugby World Cup in 2015 will be much on the minds of the different coaches as they seek to build a solid team for both competitions.

George North

ENGLAND

FRANCE

The main threat to the Welsh will be England. Though soundly thrashed by Wales in the decider game in 2013, England will have home advantage against Wales and Ireland this time and this will make the contest that much closer. The number 8 Saracens forward Billy Vunipola has been fantastic and his ball carrying skills slams through the opposition defence. Dylan Hartley is excellent in the pack and Billy Twelvetrees will probably replace the injured Manu Tuilagi. Fly half George Ford is also one to look out for as back up to Owen Farrell.

The French will need to prove themselves after a quite pathetic 2013. Finishing last in the six nations with the wooden spoon they were truly terrible. The French have plenty of young talent to choose from and now is the time to test them out, as they can’t be any worse than last year’s team. The veterans of the team like Freddie Michalak have now been dropped but if they can bring new players through then they can still be a handful with the likes of world class players in Thierry Dusautoir and Wes Fofana. They won’t win but if they get the balance of the team right they are still capable of a few surprises.

IRELAND

Scotland surprised many last season and ended up third in the competition. They are quite a handful and on any day of they’re up for it, they can give a stern test to any team.

ITALY Italy did themselves proud by ending up 4th in the competition and proved themselves that they are no longer whipping boys and that they have to be taken seriously. Underestimate them at your peril. With the likes of Sergio Parisse and Martin Castrogiovanni they have a solid experienced team and they are quite capable of getting a victory or two.

Greig Tonks

Martin Castrogiovanni

Ireland nearly beat the All Blacks a month ago, and if they can remain consistent and motivated for all 5 of their games then they could also surprise a few. New coach Joe Schmidt has much to prove, as Brian O’Driscoll has now retired. That will be a massive loss but the Irish will remain competitive in the 6 nations. They have no chance of winning though.

SCOTLAND

Joe Schmidt

Overall, the probable winners will be Wales. But England will be close on their tails. England will be smarting from their biggest defeat in 6 Nations history and will certainly be up for it at Twickenham. Ireland might do well with a new coach but it’s too early to say. The best thing about last year’s competition was that the least fancied countries did so well. This can only improve the competition as the viewer will never know who’s going to win, and every game will be a hard fought battle. Let the games commence!

Winter Olympics

Winter Olympics 2014

The 22 Winter Olympics takes place in Sochi, Russia between the 6th and 23rd of February. Sochi has a population of 400,000 people and is situated in Krasnodar, which is the third largest region in Russia. Sochi won the bid over others such as Salzburg in Austria and Pyeongchang in South Korea. This is the first Olympics to be held there since the break up of the Soviet Union. There are 2 areas for the venues; the first is the Olympic Park at the Imeretin Valley on the Black Sea and the snow events at the Krasnaya Polyana mountains. The Olympic Park will make it very compact with an average distance of 6km between the Olympic Village and the other coastal venues. The mountain area of Krasnaya Polyana will stage all the skiing and sliding sports. The mountain concept is very compact one with only an average distance of 4km between the mountain sub-village and the venues. Both venues will make it the most compact Games ever, with 30 minutes travel time from the coastal areas to the mountains also evident. This Winter Olympics is the most expensive in Olympics history at a cost of over 51 billion US dollars. There are 98 events in 15 winter sports and this Winter Olympics embraces the stranger ‘sports’ like team figure skating and the skiing/snowboarding trick laden ‘slopestyle’. Shaun White

Events to look out for At Sochi there are 12 new events that have never been seen before and this is the most new events in over 22 years.

One to look out for is the halfpipe ski competition, an extreme-sports spin on the classic skill, and a luge relay, allowing its own version of baton-passing for racers on their backs speeding down a mountain at 80 mph. Look out for Shaun White in both the halfpipe and the slopestyle events. At 27 years old can he still attract the X games fans? 80

Mikaela Shiffrin

All these newer sports have been included to bring in new viewers and in particular younger ones. And personally I think they’ll be a great success. Mikaela Shiffrin is the Slalom expert who is current World Cup champion at the tender age of 18.

In the last Winter Olympics Steve in Vancouver, Steve Holcomb Holcomb and his crew ‘The Night train’ won the gold and now he’s back with a 2-man sled built by BMW no less. In 2012 Holcomb won the 2 and 4 person sled world titles. So they must be hot favourites here.

Other new events this year include team competitions in figure skating and luge, a mixed relay in biathlon, a ski halfpipe, a parallel giant slalom for snowboarders and slopestyle events in both skiing and snowboarding. Women’s ski jumping is a first as well, after there was a massive campaign to have it included. Alex Ovechkin

From 1952 to 1992 Russia dominated Ice Hockey failing to win just 2 times. So as this is home turf and they came an embarrassing 6th last time round, they’ll want to do well here, especially as they’re led by superstar NHL MVP Alex Ovechkin.

Keep an eye out for Ted Ligety Ted Ligety from the States who won 3 golds at the World Championships last year. The giant Slalom is his speciality and he’s won 18 World Cup victories to date. Then he felt that this wasn’t enough and so he entered the combined event winning at the Olympics in 2006. He’s 28 and so he must be coming to the end of his career and this may be the last time he can become a true skiing legend.

Shani Davis

Shani Davis is one of the most versatile speed skaters ever. He’s won the World Sprint Championships at 500 and 1000 metres and the World Allround Championships with races at 4 distances. Winning golds in the 1000 metres at the last 2 Olympics.

Great Britain could achieve a record haul that surpasses our last best record from 1924. Lizzy Yarnold is a favourite for the Gold in the skeleton, Silver is expected for Shellet Rudman also in the skeleton, Silver for the womens curling team and bronze for the mens curling team. Bronze is also expected for freestyle skier James Woods and speed skater Elise Christie. If we win those then we can really surpass ourselves and end up as high as 18th in the table. Norway will dominate as usual. Lizzy Yarnold
