Sept. 23: Go Green 2023! Environmental Fair Brings Sustainability to Your Doorstep
The City of Merriam – with neighboring cities in Northeast Johnson County – is hosting Go Green 2023! on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 9 a.m.– noon at the Powell Community Center in Mission.
This free, family-friendly environmental fair will show how each small step you take can help reduce your carbon footprint at home, school, and work and save you money in the process. Go Green 2023! includes vendors, children’s activities, door prizes, giveaways, and entertainment. Find more information at merriam.org/gogreen.
OCTOBER
Sept. 30: Fall Recycling & Paper Shredding Event
Shred your important documents and recycle your electronics responsibly at our community recycling and paper shredding event on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m.-noon at Nations Holding (9001 W. 67th St.).
We’re collecting prescription eyeglasses to support the Shawnee Lions Club Recycle for Sight program, electronics, and we’ll have free paper shredding.
▶ There’s a cash-only $20 fee for computers and $40 fee for TVs. Everything else with a cord is free. View a complete list of acceptable items at secureecycle.com/items.
▶ Free paper shredding. Maximum of 10 file storage boxes.

OCTOBER
Oct. 16–21: Fall Large-Item Pickup
If it doesn’t fit in your garbage can, our Public Works crews can help you out! The City offers free large-item pickup for you to dispose of items such as furniture, appliances, and rugs.
Place your items curbside before 7 a.m. on your scheduled pickup day. Please wait until the weekend of Oct. 14 before placing items on the curb.
