MAYOR’S MESSAGE

We only have one earth that we call home, and it’s up to all of us to take better care of it. I’m proud to be part of a community that strives to find new ways to build a sustainable future! We often refer to ourselves as “Team Merriam,” and each of you is part of the team. Here’s what we‘ve done and how we can continue to work together:

▶ In just four months, the community collected enough plastic bags to turn them into two benches! We’ll place the new benches along the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail. I look forward to seeing you on the trail and trying our new benches.

▶ City Councilmembers budgeted $50,000 for Merriam residents to pick a free tree to be placed in their front yard. Planting trees help reduce our carbon footprint. We only have funds available to plant a few more trees this fall. See how to register and take advantage of this great program on page 9.

▶ We also have home energy-saving kits for you to pick up at City Hall or the Merriam Community Center. Take advantage of this free kit, as it has many items to help make your home more energy-efficient. As my dad used to say, “A penny saved is a penny earned.”

▶ Mark your calendar and take part in many sustainability programs we’re co-hosting in September. You can see the complete list on page 8. As we work on creating more sustainable efforts in Merriam, the City also is expanding community vitality with progressive economic development. See how we’re taking care of our businesses on page 6.

Thanks for doing your part as we continue to make Merriam a better, brighter community for all.

Your Mayor,

FALL CLEANING FOR CODE COMPLIANCE

Keep your home code compliant this season. Here are two tips to get your property looking great this fall:

Properly dispose of leaves and other yard debris.

▶ Remember to get rid of your leaves and other yard debris by mulching the debris or having your trash hauler pick it up. Don’t rake or blow leaves and yard debris into a street, storm drain, or creek. This can cause stormwater to back up onto your property or City street.

Make repairs to your home or business.

▶ Buildings with chipped or peeling paint or damaged driveways need to be painted and repaired to avoid violating City ordinances.

▶ The City offers grant programs to help pay for these repairs and other home improvements, such as new windows, doors, roofs, etc. Visit merriam.org/grants for more information.

Find these tips and more with our 10 City Codes You Should Know brochure. You can find it at merriam.org/communitydevelopment.

Free Notary Services Offered

Monday – Friday ▶ 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

The City of Merriam offers free notary services. Stop by City Hall or the Merriam Police Department during business hours.

You must appear in person, provide a photo ID, such as a driver’s license or other government-issued ID, and sign your document in front of the notary.

TAKING CARE

Driving across Merriam, you wouldn’t guess that nearly 520 businesses are sprinkled throughout our 4.3-square miles. This community is popular for businesses calling Merriam their operations hub. Whether a new business owner is searching for its first storefront location, a corporate headquarters lands on the prestigious Fortune 500 list, or a growing business needs room for expansion due to company growth – Merriam is home to all!

Merriam’s healthy balance of community vitality and progressive economic development is, in part, due to our convenient location in the Kansas City metro region, favorable and affordable business climate, accessibility to major transportation systems, updated infrastructure, and many opportunities to recruit quality employees.

Merriam recently added economic development to its mix of services as a way to better connect and engage with our business community.

Karen Crane, the City’s Tourism and Economic Development manager, is your go-to for questions concerning business retention, available state resources, grant opportunities for Merriam businesses, upcoming trainings and events, and available sites and commercial properties. Homeowners who are income eligible can apply for the Residential Driveway Grant. The grant pays to replace or repair their driveways.

Merriam City Councilmembers invested $90,000 this year to pay for the new driveways. This is the second year the City funded the successful program.

Apply for a grant through Oct. 15 at merriam.org/blockparty.

Merriam is a Tree City USA for the 37th Year in a Row

The City of Merriam is once again a Tree City USA!

Sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, the award recognizes Merriam’s deep-rooted history in forestry and its commitment to planting trees.

Crestview and Merriam Park elementary students help City staff plant a tree every year around Arbor Day, which was mentioned on the award application. After they helped plant the trees in front of their schools, Mayor Bob Pape and City Councilmembers read an Arbor Day proclamation.

Merriam is one of 3,600 cities across the nation to receive the Tree City USA recognition.

Merriam resident, Patty Byrnes, received the City’s first Hometown Hero Award in April. She called 9-1-1 and performed CPR on a Merriam resident, who she saw fall while he was having a heart attack. The man survived thanks to Patty’s quick actions. Merriam City Councilmembers in April honored Patty with the award.

Community Q&A

Born and raised in Olathe, Mary Krejci, and her husband, Jason, moved to Merriam with their daughter, Sawyer, in 2013.

Mary has taught kindergarten and first grade students since 2010. Mary has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in multicultural education. Mary recently won the Kansas City Star’s first Honor Roll award for making a difference in a student’s life. When she’s not teaching at Piper Prarie Elementary School, Mary loves to travel with her family and renovate their home.

Why did you become a teacher?

I wanted to become a teacher when I fell in love with school in kindergarten. I loved school every year – especially the smell of school when I got back from summer vacation.

What do you like most about teaching?

I like building relationships with my students and watching them grow and change throughout the year.

What keeps you going each year?

I think the biggest thing that keeps me coming back is knowing that for this small window of time in my students’ lives, I’m leading them and teaching them – not just academics, but life skills that, hopefully, they hold on to for the rest of their lives.

How did you find out about the Honor Roll award?

I was nominated by one of my previous students, Cameron. His family found out about the award. It was a bracket-style competition, so I had to keep winning each round. I had a lot of people rooting for me. I found out I won at Piper Prairie’s school board meeting. I was shocked.

What was it like to win this award?

Teaching is an incredibly rewarding but incredibly hard job. We don’t often get accolades for the work we do. The Honor Roll award was a reminder that even though it may not be obvious in our day-to-day work, people notice and appreciate what we’re doing in the classroom with their students.

How are you preparing for the upcoming school year?

I’ll be going to my classroom soon to start getting it prepped and ready for the next round of students I get to meet in August! To my incoming students, I hope they know how excited I am to meet them, and I hope they’re ready to have a lot of fun in Mrs. Krejci’s class!

New Library Exterior Nearly Complete

Merriam Plaza Library construction is on track and on budget!

Construction crews finished most of the building’s outside structure and will soon begin working on the inside.

The 15,000-square-foot building is located next to the Merriam Community Center. It’ll have:

▶ An eco-friendly green roof.

▶ Sculpture-like monitors on the roof for natural light.

▶ Window nooks along the east and west sides.

▶ A drive-thru window for material returns and hold pickups.

The new library replaces the Antioch Library branch, which has served our community since 1956.

Merriam Plaza Library is scheduled to open next year.

Watch the How to Build a Library series and time-lapse videos at youtube.com/jocolibrary.

SUSTAINABILITY IN MERRIAM

You’re Helping Merriam Build a More Sustainable Future Plastic

Our community collected more than 1,000 pounds of plastic film in just four months! Those pounds of plastic will turn into recycled products. We earned two benches for collecting the plastic bags, which we’ll place along the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail.

Plastic bags can’t be recycled in your curbside recycling bin because they get tangled in the recycling center’s machinery. Please continue to recycle your plastic bags at local grocery stores.

Trees

You love trees! The City invested $50,000 to plant 85 trees across Merriam. Heartland Tree Alliance planted dozens of trees in residential front yards this spring and will plant about 45 more trees in fall.

It’s part of the City’s Residential Tree Grant. Learn more and register for a free tree at merriam.org/treegrant .

Lights and Energy

The City is converting all lighting in City facilities to LED lights. All buildings also will be weatherized to improve energy efficiency.

You can do your part by picking up a free home energy-saving kit at City Hall or the Merriam Community Center, while supplies last.

Let’s Talk About Composting

It’s estimated that about 25% of what ends up in the landfill is compostable food waste. By composting instead of sending food waste to the landfill, you’re reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Start composting now! Sign up for a Compost Bin Rebate through the City. You can get up to $40 to buy or install a compost bin. Some companies will collect your food waste, or you can drop it off at area composting sites. Learn more at merriam.org/compost.

Officer Travels to Germany for Special Olympics

Capt. Jeremiah Waters recently flew into Berlin to represent the Merriam Police Department at the Special Olympics World Games.

While there, Waters carried a torch, called the Flame of Hope, that starts the opening ceremony games. He said the experience was life-changing.

“It’s hard to describe the honor and emotion that this event gave me,” Waters said. “It was amazing to run with officers and Special Olympics athletes from around the world. It just made my mission of spreading the message of inclusion and working to help the athletes that much stronger.”

Plan Your Escape Because Fire Won’t Wait

Do you know what to do if your house catches on fire? Once a smoke alarm sounds, you may only have 2 minutes to escape safely. With Fire Prevention Week Oct. 8-14, make sure your family has an action plan with these tips:

▶ Draw a map of your home, showing all doors and windows. Locate two ways out of each room.

▶ Make sure your home has working smoke alarms less than 10 years old.

▶ Make sure everyone knows how to dial 9-1-1.

▶ Pick a meeting place outside your home.

▶ Practice your home fire drill and discuss what worked and what didn’t. Families that prepare for a fire have a much better chance of surviving.
