1. Occupiable Effervescence Individual Senior Capstone - 16 Weeks University of Cincinnati - Spring Semester 2020
Through the exploration of food preservation techniques, develop a recipe for interiors to change, yet remain familiar. The Avondale Library in Cincinnati, OH is used as a case study site.
Software Used: SketchUp, Enscape, Photoshop, Illustrator
OCCUPIABLE EFFERVESCENCE
1 Existing Principles

By adding the new idea of suspension, but maintaining the original design principles, hierarchy, symmetry, and datum, the space should maintain the feeling it had when first constructed, but will have a completely different look and experience.

INDIVIDUAL SENIOR CAPSTONE
Making Process
Suspension
Before deciding suspension should be the added element, I spent months practicing food preservation recipies. I pickled, dehydrated, fermented, and more.
OCCUPIABLE EFFERVESCENCE
1
First, suspended book cases in the proposed double height stacks space were added. This space was originally single height on the 1st and basement floor levels, but punching into the basement makes the suspension more apparent.
1
INDIVIDUAL SENIOR CAPSTONE
A spiral stair is added to the existing double height space to create a quiet reading overlook. The stair is also meant to have a suspended feel as it is constructed primarily of glass.

The entry focal is the stair which is intended to bounce and filter light as it passes through the space. The stacks room to the east should allow the patron to feel submerged in the books as they enter.

INDIVIDUAL SENIOR CAPSTONE
This is the view upon entry where you see two reading rooms on either side and a doorway leading into the stacks beyond.
OCCUPIABLE EFFERVESCENCE
1
This is the north reading room with a bookcase on one wall, a screened partition with a small meeting room, and a mid-centruty inspired conversation pit for casual reading or studying.
1
INDIVIDUAL SENIOR CAPSTONE
This is the south reading room which also features a similar bookcase and screen partition. There are reflective study desks for work on devices or large books. Both rooms have mirrored ceilings with recessed lighting to mimick the original trim.
OCCUPIABLE EFFERVESCENCE
1
Up the spiral stair is a reading alcove which overlooks Avondale. The ceiling is similar to the existing, but incorporates a perforated lighting system. There are small, movable, pieces of furniture to allow for circulation and varying group sizes.
1
INDIVIDUAL SENIOR CAPSTONE
Upon entering the stacks area, there is a flutted glass screen. This obscures the books slightly before making the descent down the stairs.
OCCUPIABLE EFFERVESCENCE
1
The stacks are cable suspended shelf systems that are double story in height. There are ladders on track systems for staff to climb to retrive valuable books.
1
INDIVIDUAL SENIOR CAPSTONE
The golden screens mimic and extend the shape of the existing windows on the first floor level and are backed with golden tinted mirrors for more light reflectivity.
OCCUPIABLE EFFERVESCENCE
1
The central stair is supported by a large metal column and the floor of the alcove is supported by metal beams attached to existing and new columns.

INDIVIDUAL SENIOR CAPSTONE
How to make Occupiable Effervescence: The site must first be analyzed. Identify driving design principles of the existing space. Once these elements are clear, incorporate the suspension element appropriate for the existing program. Use materiality to let light deep within the space and to bounce off of adjacent objects. Create layers of translucent materials to alter the quality of this light. Furniture and fixtures should allow the light to penetrate deeper into the building, allowing it to pass through and reflect off of these surfaces. Incorporating all of these ideas and principles will yield a space which emulates the experience of pickled or fermented foods.
