Young group hits the court for Gaels

Now in his 30th year at St. Edmond, Adolph Kochendorfer will see plenty of new faces when he looks out at the court or down the bench this winter.

The Gael boys return just four players with varsity experience to the roster after going 8-14 a year ago.

“We’ve got a good core group to start with,” Kochendorfer said. “I feel like they are going to really play well together and are a pretty unselfish team, which is always good.

“As a whole, though, we have a lot of young kids that are going to get a shot at playing time. We’re going to need to develop depth so that we don’t have to play our starters as much as we have in the past and we’re going to count on a lot from everybody.”

Senior Jackson Palmer and junior Sam Mericle are back having played in all 22 games last year, while 12th-grader Aaron Lursen saw action in six.

Junior JT Laufersweiler played in 13 games and is coming off an all-district season on the football field, while Mericle and Lursen were members of the state-qualifying cross country team.

“They just have more confidence about them,” Kochendorfer said. “Jackson had a really good baseball season over the summer and has played a lot of basketball. Sam and Aaron really shined in cross country, and JT had a tremendous football season.

“You can tell they are ready and anxious to go.”

St. Edmond opened the 202122 season winning three of its first four before dropping four of its next five. They closed out the year losing nine of 11 including a 41-38 decision to West Hancock in the postseason opener.

While finishing six games under .500, the Gaels were 7-1 outside of the North Central Conference, which features all teams from either Class 3A or 2A, as St. Edmond plays in 1A. Of those 13 defeats, seven came by 10 points or less.

“We just kind of got tired late in games,” Kochendorfer said. “That is one of the biggest differences in playing teams that much bigger than you in terms of number of kids.

“We were in many of those 13 games that we lost, we just couldn’t finish. Hopefully, being a year older we can get some of those ones.”

Johnny Dickerson, a senior, is on the roster along with junior Thomas Cosgrove. Sophomores Elias Kolacia, Andrew Clavey, Dorian Groff and Ryan Zu are joined by ninth-graders Jakob Koopman, Anthony Valles, Jackson McElroy, Jamison Baker and Grant Galles.

Koopman, who would have been in the rotation, suffered a season-ending injury in football and will be out.

“He definitely would have been getting a lot of minutes,” Kochendorfer said. “It kind of forced us to change things around that we had planned, but it does open up playing time for
