Ryan Pedersen is expecting a lot out of his Eagle Grove boys this winter.
With four returning starters and another letterwinner back, the Eagles look to compete in the Top of Iowa Conference.
Seniors Jordan Morris and Tate Richardson are joined by starters Drake Canavan and Jaxon Morris. Cody Gearhart, another 12th-grader, is also back.
“We have a good core of players returning from last year,” Pedersen said. “I am hoping to take a big step forward this season. We have a lot of experience and four returning starters.
“The No. 1 goal for this season is to take care of the ball. When we take care of the ball, we can compete with the best teams in our conference.
“We also need to rebound on both ends of the court. We have a long and lanky team; we just need to have the mentality that every rebound needs to be ours. That’s what we will focus on in practice this season.
Canavan, a 6-foot-3 junior, averaged 12.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game last year, with Jordan Morris adding nine points and Jaxon Morris, a sophomore 5.4. Richardson chipped in two points and four boards a night.
Junior Nolan Krauss is expected to also see time in the backcourt.
“In order for us to be successful this season, we need players to step up and lead,” Pedersen said. “Drake is our returning leading scorer and I anticipate his numbers to go up in his junior year. But we need to find other scorers that can be consistent night in and night out too.
