Jason Devine of Anti-Racist Action Calgary rips up one of the anti-immigration posters put up in his southeast neighbourhood.

Anti-racist activists are planning to scour a southeast neighbourhood to remove hateful posters associated with the group Blood and Honour Canada. Posters with messages like “Immigrants cost Canadian taxpayers $23 billion annually,” and “Does this seem right to you?” have been plastered throughout Forest Lawn. At the bottom of the poster is a link to suspected Aryan nation group Blood and Honour’s web page. One web link on the poster leads to a page with a photo of Jason Devine of Anti-Racist Action Calgary. His picture is under the word “communism.” Devine lives in the area and was attacked last year by a group

Repeat offence According the Const. Brian Denison, those putting up the posters could only be issued a violation for breaking a bylaw prohibiting putting up posters on light posts. He said the group has done this several times before. “It’s almost like a little way or recruiting for them in a very round about way.”

he alleges were white supremacists. “It’s a little disconcerting to say the least,” Devine said of the posters A fellow Forest Lawn resident,

who wished to remain unnamed, said he first saw the poster on the windshield of his car after coming out of a Co-op grocery store. “I was kind of sick about it, actually,” said the man. “It was kind of disturbing because my kids were with me.” Const. Brian Denison of the police hate crimes unit said the posters are not against the law but added residents shouldn’t stand for it. “It’s take back your neighbourhood,” he said. “If I saw this up on my lamp post, it would be coming down.” Devine said he plans to do exactly that. “We plan to go out as a group with as many people as we can get later this weekend, and we plan to pull down all the posters that we find.”

Copyright skirmish to impact students University of Calgary has cut ties with national organization New rules set for students, staff using educational material JEREMY NOLAIS

@METRONEWS.CA

Students at University of Calgary will face new restrictions this fall on how they access educational material. This comes following a shift by the city’s biggest university away from Access Copyright, a national organization that obtains legal access to essays, research and other instructional handouts in

exchange for an annual fee. Representatives with U of C declined requests for interviews Thursday but pointed to a letter issued earlier this month by Thomas Hickerson, viceprovost, libraries and cultural resources. “Working independently from Access Copyright will require sampling of course sites and digital repositories on campus to ensure that material posted there is copyright-cleared,” Hickerson wrote.

Roanie Levy, general counsel for Access Copyright, said the university’s decision could inhibit a student’s ability to learn. “I think it will mean a far poorer access to content,” she said. U of C business student Justin Fisher was concerned after learning about the new copyright restrictions. “When you are writing a paper, you want to find as many resources and references as possible,” he said.

New rules Students and staff at U of C are now instructed to use only materials that are properly licensed by the institution, owned by a course instructor or part of the public domain.

When asked if Access Copyright will be monitoring the U of C’s actions to ensure copyright laws are not violated, Levy responded, “We will do our job.”

AHS to review psychiatric security breaches Alberta Health Services has admitted security breaches at Edmonton’s Alberta Hospital are not limited to two highly publicized escapes from the psychiatric facility this month. In fact, the rate of patients evading the facility is one every 10 days, chief operating officer and executive vice-president of AHS Chris Mazurkewich said Thursday. He said a provincewide review will start in August to “reduce the risk of patients leaving mental health without the consent of their psychiatrist,” especially at Alberta Hospital. It will cover the past three years. Last Tuesday around 4:30 p.m. Douglas Campbell, 32, scaled a fence while playing basketball under supervision at Alberta Hospital. That fence is part of the problem, said Mazurkewich, and will be covered in the review. “We don’t want a prison, this isn’t a prison environment.... We are looking at designing the fence in a way that it’s not scalable,” said Mazurkewich. Melissa Ekkelenkamp is still missing, and her family continues to search after the 44-year-old walked away from Alberta Hospital July 6. Cathy Pryce, AHS vice-president of addictions and mental-health prevention, said any new procedures that result from the probe will have to bridge patient rights and security. SHELLEY WILLIAMSON

AUTO PREMIUMS

No hike for mandatory insurance Albertans will pay the same premiums this year as they did last for mandatory automobile insurance, according to the Automobile Insurance Rate Board. It was announced Thursday in its annual rate review that the AIRB will hold

premiums at the 2010 level based on input from consumers, “Since the introduction of auto insurance reforms in 2004, premiums for mandatory auto insurance coverage have decreased by 23 per cent,” said Alfred Savage, AIRB chair, in a release. This rate applies only to mandatory coverage and does not include optional collision or comprehensive coverage, which are set by individual insurance companies. METRO

Fringe Festival makes return to Inglewood Inglewood is set to open its doors, streets and sidewalks to the artists, volunteers and patrons of the Calgary Fringe Festival this weekend. The festival is in its sixth season and after a couple of years looking for a home, Inglewood has been deemed the perfect fit. “I can’t think of any other community in Calgary that would have opened up with such open arms and support as Inglewood has done,” said festival director Michele Gallant. This year’s Fringe will be the fourth in Inglewood, a community known for its small-town feel. The Fringe is an uncensored theatre festival, but Gallant says that doesn’t

Police say a man who sexually assaulted a woman in a northeast neighbourhood left his shoes behind at the scene. “We believe it’s a very good likeness of the suspect,” said acting Staff Sgt. Jeff MacQueen. “The victim was able to recall the details very clearly, so we believe someone out there is going to recognize this person as well as the shoes.” He said both the sketch and the shoes left behind could go a long way in assisting the investigation. “It’s certainly uncommon for an offender to leave articles of clothing

behind — or anything behind, for that matter — so we believe he left in a hurry,” he said. “Articles of clothing are very useful for obtaining DNA of the culprit.” The suspect is described as a 25- to 30-year-old Caucasian who is six feet tall and around 150 pounds, with light-brown hair and dark eyes. 911 campaign resonated with citizens: Survey Over half of those questioned could recall awareness effort More than 400 people who have previously called for assistance were polled Public education seems to be helping clear up Calgary emergency lines clogged with thousands of accidental calls. A survey conducted by the city’s public-safetycommunications division after a month-long awareness initiative earlier this year found a little over half of citizens could recall key messages from the campaign. “We thought that was pretty powerful statement that certainly the message has been heard,” said manager Steve Dongworth. “I was surprised there was that high of a recall.” In April, officials encouraged Calgarians to clear communication channels for real emergencies by not preprogramming 911 into their phones, securing the devices properly when they aren’t being used and removing batteries from in-

The city’s recent 911 campaign resonated with the public, according to officials.

active models. Daryl Pamplin has been a participant on both sides of the 911 conundrum in the past, dialing accidentally and for real emergencies. The Calgarian recalled witnessing a domestic dispute a few years ago in which a life was threatened. He called 911 immediately and rated the response as excellent. “When they’re not there, it sucks, so I think it’s important to be able to

get through,” he said. Dongworth said more evaluation of the campaign’s success, including a determination of whether accidental 911 calls have been reduced, is planned for the months ahead. JEREMY NOLAIS

I always get asked to write about the Peace Bridge, which is currently (barely) being built on the banks of the Bow River. Because it seemed too easy a target, I never really wanted to. Of course it’s frustrating that the bridge’s completion continues to be delayed, but if all I was going to do was complain about the bridge like everyone else, the column felt totally unnecessary. But the more I read about the bridge, watched its progress — no matter how slow — the more I felt for the bridge. (We can discuss my ability to have feelings for inanimate objects some other time.) The more people complained about the bridge’s budget, timeline or re-

pairs, the more I found myself poring over artists’ renderings of the bridge and imagining how it would look when it was finally complete. Sure, the bridge looks like a Chinese finger trap, and, yes, the project is already a year behind schedule, but when all is said and done, I believe it will bring a new energy to an area that so badly needs it. I was recently in Chicago, a city full of amazing architecture — architecture that’s now complemented by the equally impressive Millennium Park. While I wandered through the gardens, I imagined what Chicagoans must have thought when they saw the initial designs for the huge park, which includes a sculpture that looks like a giant kidney bean. It was initially greeted with grumbles of anger, but once the park opened and people saw the benefit of having the park, those feelings of disdain were quickly converted. The bean, actually called Cloud Gate, quickly became a tourist destination — one

that brings in millions of dollars annually to the area. While I don’t think the Peace Bridge alone will drastically revitalize the area, it’s definitely a step in the right direction. If Calgary is to continue to grow, we need to have things like the Peace Bridge. It shows the rest of Canada that we will eventually rival them and their rich history. We need to take advantage of all our land and continue to create innovative spaces. Whether you’re willing to admit it or not, 20 years from now we’ll have a hard time imagining life before the controversial bridge. After all, what would Paris be without the Eiffel Tower, Toronto without the CN Tower, or Saskatoon without ... OK, bad example. The Peace Bridge will be worth the wait. Remember: Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Simon Coward and his teammate, Adam Harmer, won the world’s longest paddling race in their tandem kayak.

Six days, eight hours and 51 minutes is how long it took an Australian expat

and his teammate to paddle 1,600 kilometres down a river. Simon Coward and Adam Harmer won first place in the Yukon 1000

kayaking race on July 24. It took Coward, who has been kayaking for 15 years, six months of intensive training to prepare for the race.

It all paid off in the end. “To finish felt amazing,” said Coward, who now calls Calgary home. “Six months of really hard work came together.”

Wooing Calgary palates, one dish at a time Unlike Indian, Thai and Italian food, Canadian cuisine has a reputation for being, well, less than exotic. On Saturday, some Calgary restaurants are planning to change that misperception. Food Day Canada, which began in 2003 as The World’s Longest Barbecue, is an annual celebration of our country’s simple yet delicious meals made from home-grown ingredients. FARM Restaurant, CHARCUT Roast House and NOtaBLE Restaurant are just three of many Calgary restaurants celebrating Canadian cuisine. “I think it’s important to have those mileposts. To say, once a year, we’re going to consciously talk and think about Canadian cooking,” said Chef Michael Noble of NOtaBLE Restaurant.

Popular youth centre could be shuttered The Cornerstone Youth Centre may close just days after city police cited it for helping prevent youth crime, sources say. A shortfall in government grants means about 35 youth could find themselves without a place to play games, exercise, do homework and go on field trips. The centre needs about $70,000 to stay open and it is actively fundraising to reach that goal. Go to cyccalgary.com to make a donation. METRO

There are 12 12 Calgary restaurants taking part in Food Day Canada. For Noble, the Canadian style of food is “uncomplicated, unpretentious cooking that honours the indigenous ingredients that are Canadian.” Many dishes will be meat- and seafood-based, highlighting Alberta beef and bison and Atlantic lobster and halibut. Canadian fruit will also be incorporated into the dishes, with some sauces using berries from B.C., and desserts made with Ontario apples. Rookie MPs prepared for the spotlight: NDP Layton’s absence deprives young MPs of role model Nearly six-dozen first-timers 18 under age 30 The NDP says its bumper crop of youngsters is prepared to step out of the shadows and take on a more prominent role during the absence of party leader Jack Layton. While many didn’t campaign during the election because they never expected to win, the rookies have spent the post-election period playing catch-up — going door-to-door and studying local issues. One of the party’s more experienced MPs, Megan

Leslie, describes the process as a “baptism by fire — one that has helped prepare the youngsters for the daunting task ahead. Layton’s absence means the new MPs may absorb some of the public scrutiny that would normally have fallen on Layton. But Leslie, who is mentoring five of the party’s new Quebec MPs, says the busy months that followed the May 2 federal election forced the party’s newcomers to learn quickly.

She suggested the rookies had already faced an unusually intense introduction to elected life. First the newbies walked into the House of Commons without aides, offices or virtually any orientation as they struggled to fill a historic number of vacant political staff positions. Then, Leslie noted, came the NDP’s marathon, 58hour filibuster to delay back-to-work legislation for Canada Post. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Interim leader New Democrats got their first taste of life without Jack Layton Thursday as the party confirmed rookie MP Nycole Turmel as its interim leader.

Layton’s hand-picked stand-in immediately faced tough questions about her inexperience, her laboured English and her past endorsement of separatist politicians.

NDP Leader Jack Layton’s absence should not change the game plan of younger New Democrats, says 20-year-old MP Charmaine Borg, one of the youngest parliamentarians in Canadian history. “We’ve always been given an opportunity to stand up and to say what we want to say, and we’re certainly respected in caucus as much as any other MP,” said Borg, a former copresident of the NDP club at McGill. The Canadian Press recently followed Borg during a work day in her riding of Terrebonne-Blainville, where she appeared at ease with local officials, a powerful union boss and municipal environmental patrollers. GOP puts off vote on debt-limit bill An intense endgame at hand, House Republican leaders put off a vote Thursday night on legislation to avert a threatened government default and slice federal spending by nearly $1 trillion. GOP leaders announced their decision after abruptly halting debate on the legislation and plunging into an intensive round of meetings with rebellious conservatives. The decision created fresh turmoil as a divided government struggled to

head off a default threatened after next Tuesday that would leave the Treasury without the funds needed to pay all its bills. As the evening slipped by, the White House poked fun at Republicans led by Speaker John Boehner, who has become President Barack Obama’s principal antagonist in a contentious era of divided government. And Senate Democrats pledged to scuttle the measure — if it ever got to them — to force a final compromise. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Isaiah Mustafa, a.k.a. the Old Spice Guy, wins out over Fabio in ‘Mano a Mano en El Bano’ contest The Old Spice Guy has won his hunk-off with Fabio. Former football player Isaiah Mustafa has been lead spokesman for the Procter & Gamble Co. brand of men’s body washes and deodorants for nearly two years, starring in a popular series of marketing campaigns relying heavily on YouTube, Twitter and other social media. Now, he has held off a playful effort by the Italian model to become “the new Old Spice Guy.” In a series of videos culminating Thursday, the muscular pitchmen duelled in tongue-in-cheek challenges from one another and viewers. They held staring and whistling contests, bantered and gave advice on writing love letters and working out. P&G says Mustafa won based on consumer feedback such as “likes” and online comments. They called the competition “Mano a Mano en El Bano” (hand-to-hand in the bathroom). Mustafa said he wasn’t worried, even though Fabio has been “the epitome of the sex symbol as a

pitchman.” “Not at all,” he told The Associated Press. “There are so many fans that enjoy the Old Spice Guy, there’s not really a calling for him to disappear.” Even “the ferocious Ray Lewis,” the Baltimore Ravens football linebacker, has taken a recent turn pitching Old Spice products, Mustafa pointed out. The campaigns started with Mustafa appearing in a shower clad only in a towel and urging women to look at their man, and then back at him. Then followed an online video series, including one in which he suggested President Barack Obama could improve poll ratings among women by opening speeches with Mustafa’s “Hello, ladies” greeting. The campaigns engineered by Portland, Ore.based agency Wieden+Kennedy won advertising-industry awards, boosted Old Spice sales and have been cited by P&G CEO Bob McDonald as a leading example of the power of multimedia marketing. Factory workers raise stink VINCENT MICHEL/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Workers at a diaper factory in France are raising a stink about management’s plans to close the plant — in the process sending a creative plea for help to France’s pregnant first lady. Employees at the Ontex factory in Ville-franche-surSaone have sent 187 diapers to Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy. That’s one diaper for each employee in the plant, and a none-toosubtle message that while the diapers might be disposable, their jobs aren’t. Union leader Bernard

Leblond said workers had “stuck a bright yellow sticker” saying “‘made in France by the 187 workers of Ontex’ on the box containing the diapers and sent it to Fort Bregancon” — the mansion where supermodel-turned-singer Bruni-Sarkozy is spending her summer vacation. The plant made 690 million diapers last year. They are sold under store brands by France’s main hypermarket chains. It was not immediately known whether BruniSarkozy had received the package. A PARTICLE OF HOPE AMID TRAGEDY THE METRO LIST PAUL SULLIVAN METRO

It’s hard to believe all this happened in just one week. Whatever happened to the “silly season”?

1

Tragedy in Norway. A lunatic murders dozens of innocent young people to make some kind of stupid point. What could be more horrifying and pointless? Lesson No. 1: Disarm all the Nazis. Carefully.

2

The 27 Club. A different kind of tragedy as Amy Winehouse joins a self-destructive fraternity of young people who make beautiful music but can’t face the music. Good news/bad news: She left behind a partially completed album, so she’ll haunt the Billboard 100 for some time to come.

3 4

Jack Layton. Let’s hope Canada’s favourite champagne socialist gets an opportunity to raise a glass in celebration at least one more

time. The God particle. God may or may not exist, but there is new evidence that the God Particle does. Deep in the bowels of the CERN atom smasher in Switzerland, the enigmatic Higgs Boson, which theoretically imparts mass to all other elemental particles, leaves tantalizing tracks in the virtual sand. Go ahead Neo, take the red pill.

5

Peace-making Pakistani. Remember this name: Hini Rabbani Khar, the best-looking foreign minister on the planet, and the youngest. At 34, Pakistan’s foreign minister has just finished a visit to arch-enemy India, where she charmed the dickens out of her Indian counterpart, S.M. Kirshna, 79. The two nations promise “a new era” of co-operation. She’s not just another pretty face.

6

Speaking of pretty Faces. Hugh Hefner’s 25year-old ex-fiancée Crystal Harris tells Howard Stern she only had sex once with the octogenarian Big Bunny and it only lasted “like two seconds.” I bet it was the best two seconds of Hef ’s long, long life.

7

The famine in Somalia. Let me get this straight. There are two million people in Somalia on the brink of starvation, and the faction in charge of the blighted area, al-Shabab, believes it will be better for the people to starve to death than accept aid from western infidel dogs. Just for a second there, thanks to Hini Rabbani Khar, the world was starting to make sense. Now, thanks to alShabab, it’s back to normal.

Although it wasn’t clear what the exact allegations are, a government watchdog group representing Anchorage-based scientist Charles Monnett said investigators have focused on his 2006 journal article about the bears that garnered worldwide attention. Whatever the outcome or the nature of the allegations, the investigation will likely fuel the ongoing fight between climate change activists and those who are skeptical of scientists’ findings about global warming. The probe also focuses attention on an Obama administration policy intended to protect scientists from political interference. Gosling gets funny Canadian actor, best known for turns in darker roles, shines in Crazy, Stupid Love Breezy rom com has substance beneath the sweetness Richard: As good as Steve Carell is here I have a feeling the person everyone will be talking about on the way out of the theatre is Ryan Gosling. He reveals a gift for comedy, a magnificent abdominal area and the ability to take a stereotype and turn it into a living, breathing character. Agree or no? MB: Yes, this is a great leap forward for an actor who has played a variety of depressives, mumblers, and addicts. He looks great in a sharp cut jacket and crackles with charisma. Of course, he’s got the fun role, but still, he adds something extra to the stock character of the lothario with a wounded

heart. And by the way the female members of the audience swooned when he took off his shirt. Gosling has matured into one fine Canada Goose. RC: It’s true. Young Hercules seems like a long time ago now. If Gosling can erase his slightly embarrassing TV past away, then I think this is the movie that will go a long way to erase the image of Steve Carell as that guy from The Office. He was masterful on that show and has been good in other movies — particularly as the depressed Uncle Frank in Little Miss Sunshine — but here he absolutely nails the mix of comedy and pathos needed to make

Crazy, Stupid, memorable.

Love

so

MB: Right, but I couldn’t help notice your lack of praise for his recent film work, which I find tepid and dweeby. Here Carell can get his chops into a script that goes beyond his usual hangdog schlemiels and grow a pair. And it’s a joy to watch. But Richard, let’s not leave out the perfectly cast supporting roles. I loved both the babysitter and Carell’s 13-year-old son. Any other standouts for you? Or can we give the directing team their kudos? I’ve rarely seen better direction in a rom com. RC: I agree all round. It’s a cut above the usual rom

com, reminding me more of the Neil Simon relationship movies of the ’70s that were family dramas disguised as sex comedies. As for the supporting cast, I have to say I called it for Emma Stone when I first saw her in Superbad. MB: By the way, I wasn’t sure about the movie at first. The plot seemed to be too close to something Dane Cook might have done in his brief heyday, but then it ripened into a full-fledged, perfect farce with all the plot strands coming together. The ending’s a bit sentimental, and I’ve always hated when characters express their feelings in a Big Speech, but these are tiny quibbles.

Cowboys and Aliens Genre: Action, Sci-Fi Director: Jon Favreau Stars: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde 88

What’s really stupefying about Jon Favreau’s genre mash-up Cowboys and Aliens is that none of its five credited screenwriters notices how clunky, artless and just plain awful most of the dialogue sounds. The cowboys spend so much of the film sitting around talking and whining that you find yourself rooting for the

The Smurfs Genre: Animation, comedy Director: Raja Gosnell Stars: Neal Patrick Harris 8

It becomes clear about midway through the climactic battle scene in The Smurfs that the adorable blue characters are pretty much just using their namesake favourite word in place of cursing. And thinking too much about the implications of the plot will only lead to migraines. Neal Patrick Harris and Glee scenestealer Jayma Mays do their best, but the stunt-

aliens — and wishing they’d show up sooner. The real shame, though, is the wasted pedigree at every level, from a skilled genre director (Favreau) to blockbuster godfathers as producers (Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard) to a dream cast (Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde and Sam Rockwell). That so many great elements can add up to so little makes you wonder where it all went so terribly, terribly wrong. NED EHRBAR

casting of the blue heroes (with George Lopez and Katy Perry in major roles) grates. Spoiler alert: The obvious and awful joke — “I smurfed a girl and I liked it” appears — and doesn’t even make sense, since there‘s only one girl Smurf. Despite being beloved kids’ entertainment, the film is targeted at the 25 to 40 crowd. Whose smurfing idea was that? NED EHRBAR

Playing best friends who magically switch bodies in The Change-Up, real-life friends Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman have had plenty of time to think about what they’d do if they found themselves in that situation in real life. “I’d do terrible things to his body,” Reynolds admits. Bateman, not batting an eye, finishes the thought for him: “And to my wife. He’s been after my wife for years,” to which Reynolds nods solemnly, adding, “Years, years. And she will be mine.” Kidding — we hope — aside, the two friends were excited enough about the idea to work off of each other’s quirks. In the film, Bateman’s straight-laced family man finds himself navigating the world of a layabout bachelor, while Reynolds’ barely employed actor takes on a wife and kids and a rough week at work as a lawyer. But while they may seem perfect for their roles — Bateman as the straightlaced family man and Reynolds as the pot-smoking ladies man — the guys insist they didn’t really mind who played which role. In fact, Reynolds doesn’t think he’s any more like one character than the other.

Jason Bateman, left, and Ryan Reynolds switch bodies in The Change-Up.

“When you buy a ticket to an R-rated film, you want Rrated comedy.” JASON BATEMAN

“I’ve got to say I’m somewhere in the middle,” he says. “There was a time in my life when I’d wake up mornings in a shallow pool of my own fluid, but those days are over. I eat breakfast now, not ketchup. It’s different now.” Bateman, though, definitely related to the husband and father he plays on screen, even if he was concerned it might not fit with the kind of raunchy comedy they were going for. “You look at the domes-

tic part of this film and you think is that going to soften the R-rating?” he admits. “Because when you buy a ticket to an R-rated film, you want R-rated comedy.” The Change-Up is most definitely an R-rated comedy, and the two actors are more than proud of it. “You want to go in there, have a good time, laugh your ass off, maybe get offended a couple of times and get the hell out. We’re not trying to win Oscars here or teach anybody any lessons,” Bateman says. “There’s no reason to do another body-switching movie unless you’re going to do something different. And we do here. This is an R-rated body-switching movie, that hasn’t been done before.”

Reynolds is right there with him, as he says he definitely prefers R-rated material. “Every PG-13 comedy I’ve ever done, you always have that inevitable moment halfway through shooting when you call the studio head and go, ‘Are you sure we can’t go R with this? Because we just shot something terrible,’” he says. “But there are sometimes when you’re in a PG13 movie when it doesn’t need to be rated R. It’s very easy to fall back on the idea that you can swear your way out of a scene. But it’s nice when you can let it all hang out in a movie like this and not worry too much about pushing it too far.”

Films’ primate attraction

HANDOUT

Ape-centric films show humans love our not-so-distant cousins Movies have been messing with apes since a Hollywood director captured and chained that great gorilla on Skull Island and brought him to Broadway in 1933’s King Kong. The reason, of course, is as plain as the image in the mirror. Apes and monkeys: They’re like us, but they’re not us. That’s the fascination. And it’s a great starting point for all kinds of storytelling. This summer, movies have offered a barrel of monkeys that, at the risk of offending Bonzo and Mighty Joe Young, eclipses all previous comers, not to mention the robots, pirates and wizards currently littering the multiplex.

Monkeys and apes are everywhere, from Crystal, the crazy capuchin seen in The Hangover II to the bromance between Kevin James and the Nick Noltevoiced silverback gorilla in Zookeeper. Then there’s this story of human hubris: Scientists perform experiments on a young chimp and, afterward, abandon it, leaving the animal caught halfway between man and monkey. It’s the premise of not one, but two summer movies: the upcoming reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the Sundance Film Festival documentary sensation, Project Nim, which chronicles a Columbia University professor’s radical attempt in the

The boys tell their side

America’s most dysfunctional family has been entertaining us since 1989 Series executive producer Al Jean tells us what’s next for Homer and co. FOX BROADCASTING CO/THE CANADIAN PRESS

SCENE@METRONEWS.CA METRO WORLD NEWS IN NEW YORK

Highlights For fans still on Team Simpson, Jean spilled other highlights of Season 23, premiering Sept. 25. • The Treehouse of Horrors episode will actually air around Halloween this year: Oct. 30. •Another holiday-themed half-hour — a Christmas

The Simpsons: from left, Lisa , Marge , Maggie, Homer and Bart Simpson.

episode — takes place 30 years in the future. “Bart is this lousy, deadbeat dad who actually lives in the school, which is now condos, and Skinner is his landlord,â€? Jean says. In another episode, Homer becomes a Glenn Beck-like pundit. He leads the Gravy Boat movement and selects Ted Nugent as his ideal presidential candidate. The Nuge guest stars — and sings! • Pop-culture spoofs and homages abound. In a parody of Inception, Jean says: “One dream level was (drawn in) the Tracey

Ullman Show styleâ€? — like the animated series’ early days. • Another reference of note: Lost. “We have a show coming up where Homer gets addicted to a show that’s basically Lost,â€? Jean says. “It ended five years ago, but he’s like, ‘Don’t tell me how it ends!’ We’re doing it post-Lost, and five years from now it will still be post-‘Lost,’ so it should hold up.â€?

Boo-urns TV stations around the world recently had a meltdown over The Simpsons. As leaks at Japan’s tsunami-hit Fukushima plant made headlines, TV stations in several European countries banned or censored show episodes that poked fun at nuclear radiation.

BACHELORETTE REHASH. If you’ve been watching The Bachelorette you’ll want to catch the wrapup Men Tell All episode on Citytv on Sunday. It’s followed by The Marriage Ref, which this week features chef Rachael Ray and comedic actors Larry Miller and J.B. Smoove weighing in on marital feuds. (City)

Jersey what? RANDY BRITS. The Jersey

Sick of The Simpsons? Impossible, we say! The series is set to hit 500 episodes on Feb. 19, 2012, after all. But according to series executive producer Al Jean, not everyone is feeling the love. “There’s a big town meeting that the Simpsons don’t know about, and when they go in, the town is saying, ‘We’re going to get rid of the Simpsons,’ Jean said Tuesday, explaining the milestone episode’s plot to TV critics touring the show’s animation studio, Film Roman, in Burbank, Calif. “They’re sick of them.

Slacker turns into success

Jerry Ferrara’s Entourage character has ambitions of his own So does the actor who plays him Jerry Ferrara’s character on Entourage, known as Turtle, was first introduced as a pot-smoking slacker living with his movie star friend Vincent Chase, working as his chauffeur, and enjoying the perks of being so close to fame. In the eighth and final season he’s an entrepreneur with dreams of his own success who has Mark Cuban on speed dial. In real life, Ferrara, now 31, has gone through his own transformation over the course of the show. He’s lost roughly 50 pounds and is looking forward to the challenge of finding work beyond Entourage.

“Times are a little bit different now. “(In the past) if you were a television actor you were a television actor and if you were a movie actor then that’s it,” he said. “Now people are segueing from TV to movies rather easily and you’re seeing a lot of people go from movies to television so I just think there are no rules anymore,” he added. One thing he can add to his resumé is writing. After “begging for a few years” for an opportunity, Ferrara co-wrote two episodes of Entourage this season after creator Doug Ellin gave him the chance. “He babysat me along

the way,” Ferrara said. “It was a goal I had from the very beginning and so we got it in the last season.” Ferrara says it wasn’t easy to write for himself. “I wanted to write myself out of the episode,” he said. “I just didn’t want anyone to think I was trying to do this to write myself some cool story-line. ... That was my own neurotic brain thinking.” He says he was “terrified” to get his co-stars’ reaction at the table read. Ferrara is also filming a movie called Think Like a Man based on the bestselling relationship advice book written by Steve Harvey. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Jerry Ferrara finally got a chance to write for the show.

Enjoying his ‘Bad’ break Actor Aaron Paul appreciates the chance to be in a quality show No matter how bad life gets for Aaron Paul's character on Breaking Bad, it's hard to hold it against him. He plays Jesse Pinkman, a drug-dealing slacker turned (spoiler alert) murderer in the show’s fourth season. He works with his former high school chemistry teacher Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, to produce meth. Cranston’s character has cancer and turned to the drug trade to provide for his family after he dies. As a job in meth would have it, he's gotten increasingly sinister over the course of the show, too. Many fans find something very good about Jesse, and he’s someone they're rooting for.

“When Jesse’s introduced they see him just like ‘OK, he’s a bad kid drug dealer,’” says Paul. “As the show goes on, more layers are revealed ... you see he has a heart and he cares ... “He's constantly struggling to kind of find his way and to keep his head above water and they sympathize for this character. People are rooting for him.” Critics and Emmy voters are also rooting for 31year-old Paul. He has been nominated for an Emmy twice and won in 2010 in the Best Supporting Actor category for his work on the show. (The show was ineligible for this year's Emmys because the new season returned after ballots were due.) Where Jesse lacks direc-

WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT HIT SUMMER SONG? ANDY KROPA/GETTY IMAGES

SOUND CHECK ALAN CROSS SCENE @METRONEWS.CA

It used to be every summer had its song. No matter where you went, you heard That Song. It spilled from cars, slipped out from underneath ear buds, blared in clubs and floated through stores. And you could never, ever turn on a radio without hearing it. Last year’s song of the summer was California Gurls by Katy Perry. Remember 2009 when Use Somebody from Kings of

LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem is ranked as the most popular song of 2011 on The Ultimate Chart.

Leon was played everywhere? I fully intended to write about candidates for the summer song of 2011, but then I ran into a wall. What, pray tell, determines a “hit song” these days? In the old days, a hit

song was the one you heard on the radio the most. Its radio hit-ness factor was determined by (a) how many copies the single sold; and (b) how many radio stations were playing it. At some point over the summer, one song would

be played so much that it became indelibly associated with your memories of that year. If we’re to use that standard for the summer of 2011, the current leader is Adele’s Rolling in the Deep. No song is being

played more often on more radio stations in North America right now. Today, though, hit songs are determined by more than those two parameters. This is because an increasing number of people now get their music from

places other than the radio. A service called The Ultimate Chart (which monitors everything from plays on YouTube to tweets on Twitter) ranks LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem as the most popular song of the summer of 2011. At number two, it’s Skyscraper by Demi Lovato, a song that has had barely any radio airplay at all so far. She’s a total online phenom right now. Adele is way down at number eight. And let’s not forget Rebecca Black’s Friday. As awful as the song is, the video has been viewed 170 million times on YouTube and parodied millions of times more, all without ever troubling even the lowest regions of the Top 40 radio charts. That’s a hit, right? So what will be the summer hit of 2011? I guess it all depend on where you get your music.

It seems that we are born and then spend the rest of our lives finding out who we are. At least Sia, the über-bubbly Australian pop singer-songwriter, would agree with that statement. “I know, isn’t it crazy,” the 35-year-old rhetorically gushes. Sia’s latest album, We Are Born, discusses this mortal coil in passionate funk, soul and ballads. Not that she presumes to offer easy explanations, but her lyrics seem to possess a certain sagely grasp of life beyond the commercial schlep. “We’re all created by

Paris is a drinkers’ Disneyland with a cool bar, cafÊ or brasserie on almost every corner. I spent time there recently and worked my way to rue Daunou, to pay respects to Harry’s New York Bar: A liquid landmark since 1911. Some visit because Ernest Hemingway hung out there. I made the pilgrimage to taste its Bloody Mary. If the history of that classic cocktail has one consistency it’s that it was invented at Harry’s in the early 1930s. Some say it was named after a girl the original bartender knew from a joint called the Bucket of Blood Club in Chicago. Others say England’s Queen Mary I was the inspiration. You can find dozens of Bloody Mary recipes online that suggest any number of different vodkas to use as a base. A refreshing patioready summer snack These Mushroom, Pork and Asparagus Fresh Rolls are a great replacement for heavy meat-centred dishes It’s summer! Most summers you’ll find me at the local farmers markets, farm gates and other local foodie havens. It’s there where I find all the goodies to make those light and refreshing foods everyone wants to chow down on a hot sunny patio. Who needs heavy pastas and meat-centred dishes during the sweat inducing height of summer? Besides that, it’s also swimwear season right? A girl’s gotta eat, but there’s always room for food and health. That’s where these fresh wraps come in. I have to admit, we eat them almost weekly in our house during the summer months. They are just perfect patio food. You don’t even need a fork or knife to eat them and they always

please guests with their complex nature. If you find that you want to make these in the peak of summer and can’t find good quality asparagus anymore, try adding blanched scallions, steamed beans or even peas. It’s a very forgiving dish.

Preparation:

For pork filling: Place all ingredients in a slow cooker and cook on low for eight hours. When done, pull apart with two forks. Set aside. Place asparagus on a baking sheet and pour grapeseed oil over, rolling the asparagus around to coat. Season with salt and pepper and place in a 425°F oven for 12–15 minutes.

Fill a kettle with water and bring to a boil. Set vermicelli noodles in large bowl. Pour boiling water over until just submerged. Allow to sit for five minutes and then drain. To the rice vermicelli noodles, add the rice vinegar, sugar, 2 tbsp of water, 1 tsp of salt and garlic. Stir to coat. Coarsely chop the mushrooms. In a small sauté pan, heat the butter and add the mushrooms. Sauté for about five minutes, season with salt and pepper and add to the noodles. Stir in cilantro. Fill a bowl with hot-tothe-touch water and set out a tea towel. Soak one rice paper wrapper at a time for about 20 seconds or until it softens up. Lay out on the tea towel and dab it until it is just slightly moist. Place a portion of the noodle/mushroom mix in the centre. Tribute. To Harris

Reality hits home with Harris’ death CFL EXTRA POINTS DAN TOTH

WINNIPEG@METRONEWS.CA

The sudden death on Tuesday of Richard Harris, 63year-old Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive line coach, casts a light on the less-than-idyllic lifestyle of CFL coaches. Harris suffered a heart attack inside the Blue Bombers’ complex where coaches can toil 12 to 14

hours a day, watching film or meeting with players, often starting at 6 a.m. While we can’t speculate on Harris’s situation, sleep, diet and exercise can all be compromised by the demands of a schedule that doesn’t allow for many days off or free time for workouts or relaxation. Maybe it’s time for the coaches to form a union, much like the players have, with a collective bargaining agreement that limits their workload and hours at the team’s facility. The Stamp of arrogance: It’s not hard to figure out why the Calgary Stamped-

ers (2-2) are the most hated team in the CFL. Usually a squad has to put together multiple championship seasons before fans get sick of their dominance and start hoping the team collapses. In the case of the Stamps, the team merely thinks it’s great, despite just one title during the current regime. Stamps quarterback Henry Burris reached for Twitter after last week’s loss to reassure everyone that even though his offence sucks, they’ll be “great” before the year is through. “We will be a great team

this year! Mark my word!” Burris tweeted the morning after the Stamps fell 24-19 to the Eskimos, during which Stamps fans booed the team off the field. Added receiver Ken-Yon Rambo: “That just shows how much respect they have for the team.” He should realize it’s not just his own fans that disrespect the current crop of Stamps. It’s a league-wide phenomenon, spurred on by the team’s arrogant antics. Esks quieting naysayers: Edmonton’s “scorched earth” approach to its roster in the off-season was

supposed to trigger a rough year for the Eskimos, but it seems the team didn’t get that memo. The Esks didn’t win their fourth game in 2010 until October but remarkably are the only undefeated team so far at 4-0. Most of the credit goes to new head coach Kavis Reed, a former Eskimos player who has a grasp of the winning culture the franchise embodies and has conveyed that message to his players on a rebuilt roster. It also doesn’t hurt that QB Ricky Ray has finally found a balanced attack with new running back Jerome Messam.

All in or fold? Deadline looms Weekend should reveal which major league teams are serious about making a run at the 2011 World Series The Major League Baseball trade deadline is fast approaching, and plenty of big names have already moved. Carlos Beltran is headed to San Francisco, bolstering the reigning world champions for another run at the title and Colby Rasmus is out of Tony La Russa’s dog house in St. Louis and moving to Toronto.
