Filmmaker behind space-junk hoax Calgarian convinced many that pieces of dead satellite rained down on Okotoks Actual debris believed to have landed in Pacific Ocean JEREMY NOLAIS/METRO

Revving up for the toy run About 4,000 riders took the long way from Capilano Mall, many with toy-strapped bikes, to Hawrelak Park. Since 2008 alone, local motorcyclists have raised $80,000 and three 53-foot trailers full of toys for the kids’ charity.

Borrowing from a staged radio drama bought by many, a Calgary filmmaker perpetrated a spacejunk hoax that sparked worldwide attention over the weekend. Sebastian Salazar was watching his Twitter feed fill with discussion of NASA’s dying Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) shortly before midnight Friday. An anomaly over Okotoks on one weather image sparked speculation that debris from the 6.5ton craft could land in the city south of Calgary. One particular tweet expressing fear that aliens could be living in the satellite caught Salazar’s attention, reminding him of Orson Welles’ fake 1938 radio broadcast War of the Worlds, which led many to believe aliens had landed. He pulled transcripts from the

broadcast and began tweeting them out as live events occurring on a farm in the Okotoks area. “People weren’t even checking for legitimacy anymore,” Salazar said yesterday. “I started putting in quotes directly from the play and it kind of spun off from there.” To provide “proof ” of the debris, Salazar gathered some tubing and a piece of scrap metal from his family’s camper and went into the alley behind his northeast Calgary home to snap a photo. “I thought it looked terrible, but some people still bought it,” he said. RCMP fielded numerous international calls Saturday, some reportedly from as far away as Japan, about the crash landing, but no debris was found in Okotoks, confirmed spokesperson Tim Taniguchi. He said Salazar likely won’t face reprimand for his actions, despite some having expressed

outrage over the hoax online. “It didn’t cause police to enter into an investigation, so as far as I can see there is no criminal offence,” Taniguchi said.

Despite suffering through multiple traumas in his young life, one Alberta dog in need of a new home keeps on rolling — literally. Duke, a two-year-old Chihuahua living in Lacombe, Alta., was attacked and dragged by a coyote last year, according to owner Valerie Parish. His back legs were paralyzed, and surgery costs to

Today, he is as active as ever, Parish says. “He’s a cuddle bum,” she added with a laugh. “He loves to be held always, loves kisses.” Not everything has been easy for Duke, however. In the months following the

initial attack, a hawk sensing the Chihuahua’s weakness swooped in and unsuccessfully attempted to carry him away. Duke requires a great deal more care than an average dog, something Parish and her husband simply cannot provide. They are now looking for new owners and have received some gracious help from an Edmonton woman. Carol Gallant saw Duke’s story on Kijiji and was reminded of a Yorkie she lost

Mar vows free insulin pumps At least one candidate in the race to become Alberta premier is pledging free access to insulin pumps for diabetics. Gary Mar said yesterday that, if elected, he

would add the pumps to the list of publicly insured health services. The Canadian Diabetes Association says Alberta has the fastest-growing rate of diabetes in Canada but does not pay for insulin pumps like some other provinces. More than 13,000 Albertans will be living with Type 1 diabetes by next year, the CDA estimates.

Frats assume a new position Despite some trouble over hazing last year, University of Alberta fraternities say they haven’t had any difficulty winning new recruits. “We haven’t had a lot in terms of feedback,” said Kevin Thomas, president of the Interfraternal Council. “We were expecting a bit more of a backlash.” Still, the frats have taken a different approach to recruiting this year, Thomas said, with a focus on philanthropic activities and scholarships. The 96 Alberta peace and police officers who have died protecting others were honoured yesterday. One bright spot at the annual fall tribute, now in its 13th year, is that no new names were added this year, said Chief Rick Hanson of the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police. “That does not mean today is without a profound sense of loss,” he said. The ceremony began with a procession on 107 Street, culminating in a wreath-laying. “The service and the sacrifice of those fallen officers is far beyond what we have any right to ask of them,” Premier Ed Stelmach said. The crowd on the legislature grounds was reminded of the perils officers face. “Each day these brave men and women enter uncertain and sometimes dangerous situations to uphold the law in the protection of those we serve,” said Dale McGowan, deputy commis-

sioner of the RCMP in Alberta. Lt.-Gov. Donald Ethell said the day was as much for grieving family members as it was for the officers lost. “It is a way for us to let the families know that they are not alone, that their loved ones’ sacrifices are appreciated more than we could possibly express, and that our Alberta heroes will long be honoured and remembered,” he said.

Paying tribute The first officer memorial was held in Ottawa on Sept. 24, 1978, to mark the murder of Const. David Kirkwood on July 11, 1977.

On July 18, 2006, the Pillar of Strength monument was unveiled on the Alberta legislature grounds. It features an eternal flame and a bronze dove to mark each fallen officer.

On Sept. 24, 1998, Ottawa proclaimed Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day, an annual tribute that falls on the last Sunday of September.

President Mahmoud Abbas received a hero’s welcome yesterday from thousands of cheering, flag-waving Palestinians, having made a bid for UN recognition that appears destined to fail but has allowed him to finally step out of the shadow of his iconic predecessor Yasser Arafat. The crowd, many of them holding posters of Abbas, repeatedly chanted his name as he spoke. Abbas was uncharacteristically animated, shaking his hands, and charming the crowd with references to “my brothers and sisters.” Abbas’ call on Friday for the UN to recognize Palestinian independence has

transformed him in the eyes of many Palestinians from grey bureaucrat to champion of their rights. Though Israel and the U.S. oppose the move and consider it a step back for long-stalled peace talks, it could help Abbas overcome internal struggles and gain the support he will need to get a deal through one day. Demonstrators receive tips on how to handle confrontation with authorities on Parliament Hill Protesters were already filing into Ottawa yesterday for a showdown with the federal government over its support for the oilsands and a plan to build a giant pipeline from Alberta to Texas. After the high-profile arrest of celebrities and about a thousand activists in Washington last month for their attempts to stop approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, Greenpeace and other groups hope to gain similar notoriety in Canada with a civil disobedience protest on Parliament Hill today. Stars such as Gordon Pinsent, musician David Bidini and indigenous celebrity Tantoo Cardinal are expected. Already the plans for a sitin have had a polarizing effect, with both Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver making a point of defending the pipeline late last week. Environmentalists fear that spills would lead to irreversible damage.

Two of Canada’s leading marine biologists and a conservation group say a five-year proposal to slaughter 140,000 grey seals in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence is being driven by politics, not science. “I don’t support it,” said Hal Whitehead, a professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax who specializes in the study of whales. “From what I’ve seen of the rationale, it doesn’t make much sense to me.” Earlier this month, a federal advisory panel urged Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield to approve the cull. The Fisheries Resource Conservation Council, made up of scientists and fishing industry representatives appointed by the minister, said the proposed cull is an experiment that will test indirect scientific evidence suggesting grey seals are impeding the recovery of cod stocks. Saudi King Abdullah announced yesterday that the nation’s women will gain the right to vote and run as candidates in local elections to be held in 2015, in a major advancement for the rights of women in the deeply conservative Muslim kingdom. In an annual speech before his advisory assembly, or Shura Council, the Saudi monarch said he ordered the step after consulting with the nation’s top religious clerics, whose advice carries great weight in the kingdom. “We refuse to marginalize the role of women in Saudi society and in every aspect, within the rules of

Sharia,” Abdullah said, referring to the Islamic law that governs many aspects of life in the kingdom. The kingdom’s great oil wealth and generous handouts to citizens have largely

insulated it from the unrest sweeping the Arab world. But the king has taken steps to quiet rumblings of discontent that largely centred on the eastern oil-producing region populated by the country’s Shiite Muslim minority. Abdullah said the changes announced yesterday would also allow women to be appointed to the Shura Council, the advisory body selected by the king that is currently all male. The kingdom will hold its next municipal elections on Thursday, but women will not be able to vote or run in those contests. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Swimmer forced to give up after doctor’s warning Has tried several times since 1978 JAVIER GALEANO/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Marathon swimmer Diana Nyad spent more than 40 hours in the shark-filled waters between Cuba and the Florida Keys, climbing into a boat only to be treated for searing welts left by Portuguese man o’ war stings. Left swollen and red, Nyad had no choice but to end her trek early when medics warned another sting could be deadly. The 62-year-old soldiered on for a time, cutting eye and mouth holes into a cap she wore over her face to protect against future stings. She surpassed 100,000 strokes, but the stings — which team members said left what looked like branding marks

from the jellyfish-like creatures’ tentacles — were too much of a risk. “I trained this hard for this big dream I had for so many years, and to think these stupid little Portuguese man o’ war take it

down,” Nyad told The Associated Press, just hours after getting out of the water. “It’s a huge disappointment.” Nyad was making her second attempt in as many months at the Cuba-Florida crossing, a lifelong dream that she first tried as a 28year-old back in 1978, when she swam inside a steel shark cage for about 42 hours before ending the attempt. A cageless attempt this past August fell short 29 hours in when, gasping for breath, Nyad threw in the towel after an 11-hour asthma attack she blamed on a bad reaction to a new medicine. MEXICO MURDER

Tipster killed

Police found a woman’s decapitated body in a Mexican city on Saturday, alongside a handwritten sign saying she was killed in retaliation for her postings on a social networking site.

Col. Russell Williams, right, leaves court for the last time in Belleville, Ont., last October.

Sex victim sues Russell Williams Laurie Massicotte files $7M lawsuit against ex-army commander, his wife and OPP The woman who was bound, stripped and sexually assaulted by Russell Williams has filed a lawsuit totalling more than $7 million against the convicted killer, his ex-wife and the Ontario Provincial Police. Laurie Massicotte, a former neighbour of Williams’ in Tweed, Ont., filed a lawsuit to the Superior Court of Justice on Friday for damages including pain and suffering, the infliction of mental distress and loss of economic advantage. Last month, Massicotte told the Toronto Star that her “hell really began” when she called 911 after Williams’ Sept. 30, 2009, attack. Police told her she had to remain tied up in her home until an OPP photographer could document the scene, Massicotte said. She said she remained in her restraints for five hours. The actions of responding officers — which she said included parading her in a bathrobe in front of

other officers, grilling her for details of the attack and taking her fingerprints — intensified her sense of violation, Massicotte said. The allegations made by Massicotte have not been proven in court. The suit has not been served, and no statement of defence has yet been filed. Massicotte told the Star last month it was only after her assault that she heard another Tweed woman had been sexually assaulted on her street 12 days before. The statement of claim includes damages filed against police for “not providing her with any information as to who her assailant was until ... the 8th day of February, 2010” — five months after the attack — and “allowing the defendant to reside nearby as the neighbour.” Another sexual assault victim, whose name is protected by a publication ban, is suing Williams and his wife for $2.45 million. The killing may be the third this month in the region where people were killed for what they said on the Internet. said Saturday they were protesting against bank bailouts and the mortgage crisis; some also held signs decrying Georgia’s execution of Troy Davis, who was put to death last Wednesday for the 1989 slaying of an off-duty Savannah police officer. At Manhattan’s Union Square, police tried to corral the demonstrators using orange plastic netting. Some of the arrests were filmed and activists posted the videos online. One video appears to show officers using pepper spray on women who already were cordoned off; another shows officers handcuffing a man after

pulling him up off the ground, blood trickling down his face. Police say the arrests were mostly for blocking traffic. Charges include disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. But one demonstrator was charged with assaulting a police officer. Police say the officer involved suffered a shoulder injury. Protest spokesman Patrick Bruner criticized the police response as “exceedingly violent” and said the demonstrators sought to remain peaceful. Police had no comment about the videos or the arrests. Canada’s Mark Carney waded into the touchy and controversial issues facing the American financial system yesterday, dismissing concerns — or excuses — about banking reform. Speaking at a financial convention in Washington, the Bank of Canada governor gave a spirited defence of new international rules, and chided resisters as misconceived or fatalistic. He noted that such thinking led to abuses and excessive risk-taking that resulted in the recent collapse of the system, leading to a global recession still haunting economies today. Carney’s speech to the Institute of International Finance follows two days of meetings in which global policy-makers grappled with the recession’s consequences and sought measures to prevent another.

Russell Peters may have mastered the comedy stage by selling out concerts (including Madison Square Gardens) around the globe but conquering Hollywood has taken a bit longer. “The challenge for me has been getting the right roles,” explained the Toronto native recently. “I’ve been offered a ton of (movie parts) but do I want to play the 7-11 guy or the

Now costarring in this Friday’s release of Breakaway, Peters has found his place in what’s likely the first-ever film about an Indo-Canadian hockey team. “I’d like to say that I was the seed for (Breakaway) because I used to do a joke about an all-Indian hockey

I would go out and say I’m very much in the minority for not liking hockey.”

Instead, Peters offers that he related to the film’s central story about a striving first-generation Sikh athlete who must deal with issues of family and identity in discovering his life’s ambition. “It’s really about the immigrant experience,” said Peters. “But it’s the same story for every first generationer. All My Children leaves TV TV execs consider soaps a losing cause, more costly to produce than talk or reality shows and with a dwindling audience Show may continue online Tissues were on hand but there were few tears among two dozen soap opera fans gathered to watch All My Children sign off from ABC on Friday after more than 40 years. That’s because the screen faded to black with a gunshot and a cliffhanger — an indication that the story may not be dead, even if the television series is. ABC has licensed the story to a production company that is hoping to keep the All My Children going online after the first of next year. Carolyn Hinsey, author of Afternoon Delight: Why Soaps Still Matter, organized a watching party at a Manhattan sports bar as a message to television executives who apparently think soap operas don’t matter anymore. He ‘affects me to my core’ As an actor, Jack Huston works wonders with just half a face, a gravelly, flat voice and cruel difficulty speaking. Fortunately, those afflictions aren’t his but instead are borne by Richard Harrow, the tragically disfigured World War I veteran he plays on the HBO drama Boardwalk Empire. Let the record show that, in a recent interview, the 28-year-old Huston is leading-man handsome, expansive and well-spoken in his native British accent. But he says Harrow is a character “that is part of me, who affects me to my

core. There is something so affecting about how brave and how lost he is.” Even with limited screen time on the character-packed, actor-rich Boardwalk (whose ensemble includes Steve Buscemi, Kelly Macdonald, Gretchen Mol, Dabney Coleman and many more), Harrow last year had a similarly wrenching effect on viewers, haunting them as a combat-maimed conscience in his post-war America and as the ghoulish psychopath a war creates. The series returned for its new season yesterday,

with Huston upgraded from recurring player to a regular cast member, while his character promises to be even more galvanizing as a figure of both pathos and dread. Harrow made his entry into the Empire saga midway through last season, when he crossed paths with Jimmy Darmody (played by series star Michael Pitt), a burgeoning crime boss in 1920s, prohibition-era Atlantic City, N.J. As it happened, both men were being examined in a Chicago veterans’ hospital. Darmody was seeing a

doctor for his bum leg, which was blasted by enemy shrapnel in the recent war. Harrow, a fellow vet, was there for — well, the left side of his face had been blown off during trench warfare, so there wasn’t much the doctors could do except fit him for a half-mask of flesh-colored tin to shield the awful sight from the rest of the world. “The character took on a life of his own,” says Huston, and, however tormented such a life might be, “that’s nice.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

most memorable character, portrayed by Susan Lucci, learned she would not get married again — at least not yet. She saved her final words on television for a promise to keep pursuing her beau even after he told her to have a nice life — without him. Some of the final episode’s dialogue felt more like actors talking to viewers, or television executives, than as part of the story. One example was when actress Debbi Morgan spoke soon after her blind character, Angie Hubbard, had her sight restored. “One day our family and friends will be gone and they won’t be back,” she said. “They’ll be gone for

The big ending The final episode ended with most of the show’s characters together for a party — celebrating engagements, a pregnancy and some medical miracles. Conflict: Yet the character J.R., riled because he lost his business and fortune and because his wife left to raise their baby son with a lesbian, lurked outside with a gun. Suspense: The series ended as he fired. Left unseen was who, if anyone, J.R. shot — homage, perhaps, to the famous 1980 Dallas cliffhanger that became known as Who Shot J.R.?

Is Sarah Palin a

bad mom?

A new book alleges so Parenting expert Tanith Carey shares what moms should do if they’re faced with similar situations

GETTY IMAGES

The Rogue, a controversial new book by journalist Joe McGinniss, paints Sarah Palin, the former Alaskan governor, as a coke-snorting, sexually loose harridan. It’s unflattering, especially for a mother of five. We shared some of the most-headline-making accusations with Tanith Carey, a family expert, journalist and author of Where Has My Little Girl Gone? Moms out there might find themselves in similar situations. What should they do? Palin may have done drugs in the past The book alleges Palin snorted cocaine off an oil drum during a snowmobiling trip. SAYS CAREY: “If you did take

drugs, explain they always carry the danger that they can make you behave in a way that is out of control, could earn you a criminal record or ruin your career. They also carry the risk of addiction. Explain why and how you made the decision to stop taking them — and make it clear what your attitude is to them now.”

She may have had an affair while married … allegedly with her husband’s business partner, although all parties have denied this. SAYS CAREY: “Children have

keen antennae and it’s very likely they have already guessed there is something wrong, so be honest. Don’t try and justify it — or get them to see your partner as the villain. Expect to face a lot of anger if you are the person who cheated in a marriage, as kids will see it as an abandonment of them, as well as your spouse. But keep them talking.” She may have been sexually promiscuous … allegedly with Miami Heat basketball star Glen Rice. SAYS CAREY: “If you are

asked about your sexual history, the best policy is to be truthful and tell them about your own experiences in an age appropriate way. But also underline how important sex is at its best as part of a meaningful long-term relationship. Explain that it’s never a good idea to use sex to validate yourself or fix an insecurity — as it rarely works.” She would reportedly leave her kids to “fend for themselves” One source reportedly tells McGinniss: “‘I’d walk into that kitchen and Bristol and Willow would be sitting there with a burnt pot of Kraft mac and cheese on the stove … and Sarah would be up in her bed-

room with the door closed saying she didn’t want to be disturbed.’" SAYS CAREY: “Of all the ac-

cusations, this is potentially the most damaging. It is at the serious end of spectrum of accusations that are levelled against mothers. As such, it’s also most likely to cause the most long-term damage to the parent-child relationship because it implies neglect, which goes against all we expect from parents. In Palin’s case, it would very much depend on how often this happened and how old her kids were at the time — and what the risks to them were. But we do live in a society where mothers are expected to wait on kids hand and foot from the tweens and beyond — and that is not good for their independence or selfesteem. Mothers also need to be able to acknowledge that they need down-time too.” SAM CASTONE

Easy, healthy pizza pockets Serve a snack kids love — but without all the fat and calories This recipe is fast, easy, and it replicates a convenience food your kids will love, and that you can feel good about.

Preparation:

Heat oven to broil. In a small saute pan over medium heat, cook sausage until cooked through, using a wooden spoon or spatula to break it into crumbles as it cooks. Drain off any fat. In a medium bowl, mix zucchini, mozzarella, marinara, basil and cooked sausage. Place flattened bread on a work surface. Spoon zuc-

middle of each piece of bread. Fold one corner of each slice to opposite corner and seal edges by pressing with a fork. Trim off excess crust.

Ingredients: • 1 link raw Italian turkey sausage, casing removed (about 125 g/4 oz) • 1 small zucchini, coarsely shredded • 60 g (2 oz) fresh mozzarella cheese, coarsely shredded • 125 ml (1/2 cup) no-salt, no-sugar, fat-free marinara sauce • 12 leaves fresh basil, torn into bite-size pieces • 8 slices whole-wheat bread, flattened with a rolling pin • Extra-virgin olive oil cooking spray

chini mixture evenly in

Place pockets on a baking sheet. Lightly spray both sides of each pocket with olive oil cooking spray. Place on a

rack 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5 inches) under broiler and broil until browned and crisp, 2 to 3 minutes. Flip each pocket and then brown other side under broiler, 1 to 2 minutes more. Makes 4 servings (2 pockets per serving).

Celery root brings out flavour of salmon Celery root sounds like it’s the root of the green stalks most people are familiar with. But while they may taste alike, you’ll never confuse celery for celery root in the store. Celery root is gnarly, knobby and, quite frankly, unattractive. But peel away the tough outer skin and that ugliness gives way to a fresh taste that can add flavour to everything from salads to stews. In this recipe for smoked salmon salad, celery root is matched with apples for a delicious lowcalorie main dish salad.

Preparation:

1

In a large bowl, mix together yogurt, tahini and

the reserved ginger liquid. Season with salt.

2 3 4

Add apples, celery root and ginger. Toss gently to coat the apples and celery root evenly. Set aside for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, divide the smoked salmon between four serving plates. Sprinkle the salmon with the sesame seeds, then season with black pepper. Add the watercress to the apple and celery mixture and lightly toss to coat with the yogurt sauce. Divide the salad between the serving plates, mounding it next to the smoked salmon.

Leaving the leaves alone ISTOCK PHOTOS

Find out why it’s better to not get rid of your leaves by bagging them BEN KNIGHT

GREEN@METRONEWS.CA

Welcome to autumn. The leaves are changing, and soon lawns and yards across Canada will be covered with an eye-catching tapestry of orange, red and yellow — that will have to be raked up. Or will it? Leaves are organic. They degrade into rich, useful compost and fertilizer. What happens if we all just … leave the leaves? “The biggest problem is, if the leaves are big, say from a maple tree, they can suffocate the lawn,” says garden expert Jeff Mason, a frequent contributor to Canadian Gardening and other magazines. “Usually what we do with leaves like that is run the lawnmower over them, so

they get all chopped up. And then they just stay on the lawn, or they can go into the garden.” No raking, no bags — and especially no hauling them off to the local landfill. “Something in the neighbourhood of 40 per cent of the nutrients that a tree produces in a year are in those leaves that we rake up and throw away,” says Mason. “If we just allowed the leaves to stay on the ground, or in the garden bed, this is what feeds and fertilizes trees in nature — their falling leaves.” If you happen to like raking, you can also compost leaves by simply making a big pile of them at the back of your yard. They’ll rot down over the winter, and be ready to nourish your grass, trees

In your city What to do with your leaves Leaves The City of Edmonton advises that fall leaves take longer than grass clippings to break down, and that mower-shredded leaves are also more noticeable on a lawn. The city recommends that leaves be gathered and used in a home compost pile, or as a mulch in other parts of the garden.

Experts say that leaving your leaves on the lawn is actually good for the health of your grass and trees.

and plants come spring. And they won’t even smell bad! “It’s nothing more than

the smell of walking through the woods, kicking up leaves,” Mason notes.

Compare that to the cost — in money, labour, time and gasoline — of municipal pick-up and

composting programs. Your fall leaves are — with little or no effort — free fertilizer for your lawn and garden. “There really isn’t any downside to doing this. The alternative is to pay tree guys to come in ... When you get it explained, it’s really silly that we do this — haul these leaves away, every year.”

LOOKING TO MAKE GREEN FROM INVESTING IN GREEN I'm new to investing and am doing some research. What are some green companies or stocks I should look into? Kristin of Vancouver

QUEEN OF GREEN LINDSAY COULTER GREEN@METRONEWS.CA

Let’s start with the term. What you’re searching for is called socially re-

sponsible investing (SRI). SRI is what you get when environmental, social and governance factors come together in the selection and management of investments. SRI investments take into account environmental sustainability or stewardship, labour practices, human rights and corporate governance.

Chances are good — but not guaranteed — that you won’t be supporting businesses involved in alcohol, tobacco, gambling, weapons or mining. It also goes beyond “green” companies. Investments are screened for things like human-rights violations, community involvement and environmental per-

formance. And why shouldn’t you be able to align your financial goals with your personal values? An excellent Canadian resource is the Social Investment Organization. It’s a national membership-based organization that includes financial institutions, investment firms, financial advisors

and various organizations and individuals interested in socially responsible investment. The organization has a series of fact sheets designed to answer questions like “Do social investors sacrifice returns?” or “What is community investing?” Although most mainstream banks don’t carry

ethical funds, most credit unions do, so it’s worth asking. We can play the supply-and-demand game, too. The more of us that ask for socially responsible investments, the better! David Suzuki Foundation

Tuition keeping students stressed: Poll Survey shows 58 per cent of post-secondary students feel anxious or stressed when thinking about paying school fees ISTOCK

Greg Evans is no quitter. This fall marks the 26-yearold’s second attempt to pay his way through university while balancing classes with work. “Something in my life is going to suffer,” said Evans. “My school work is definitely going to suffer, the quality of my life is going to suffer. The quality of my sleep and my health I’m sure are going to suffer.” It will be difficult for Evans, who grew up in the small community of Fonthill in Ontario’s Niagara Region, to finance his education. But Evans would rather struggle for a couple of years than live the rest of his life from one paycheque to the next. Evans first enrolled in classes at Toronto’s Ryerson University in 2005 but dropped out after a year because he wasn’t able to work enough hours to fund the venture.

Start on savings Scott Plaskett, a certified financial planner from Toronto, recommends automating the transaction so that a little bit of money from every paycheque goes into a savings account. “If you have to think about it, it’s probably going to fall by the wayside,” said Plaskett. “So automate your life, from a financial planning perspective, so that what you want to have happen, happens.” Balancing school with a job can be a tough combination. But it’s something that many students are forced to deal with.

Despite the fact that Evans’ parents aren’t able to cover his tuition, Evans says he doesn’t qualify for a loan from the Ontario

Student Assistance Program. The public administration and governance major says that this time around, he’s tackling school parttime so that he can put in as many hours at work as he needs. But he’s still taking a student line of credit from the bank as a safety net. “My money’s OK,” said Evans. “But if I got sick for, let’s say, a week or two, that would put a pretty big dent in my savings. I can’t really afford to get sick if I’m going to school again. I have to have a backup of

some sort.” Many students who started college or university this fall share Evans’ worries. According to a recent survey by TD Canada Trust, 45 per cent of parents who have kids eligible to start school this fall haven’t started putting money away for post-secondary education. A third of them say they’ll only be able to cover less than 10 per cent of the cost. The online survey, conducted in June, polled a representative sample of 640 Canadian parents who

have children under the age of 18. Another TD survey suggests that more than half — 58 per cent — of postsecondary students feel anxious or stressed when they think about how they’re going to pay their way through school. It’s no surprise when you consider that, according to a 2010 Statistics Canada report, average student debt on graduation is $18,800. And TD pegs the total cost of school for students living away from home at a hefty $80,000. THE CANADIAN PRESS

He also suggests putting money into a Registered Education Savings Plan, which attracts extra cash from the federal government in the form of the Canada Education Savings Grant. Or, to maximize every dollar, consider putting money into a Registered Retirement Savings Plan, which can reduce the amount of income tax paid. Then put any tax refund into an RESP. By taking this kind of holistic approach, said Plaskett, parents can save for their children’s education without sacrificing their retirement plans. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Ellsbury ensures Sox retain lead The Red Sox salvaged their AL wild-card lead last night when Jacoby Ellsbury hit a three-run homer in the 14th inning of the nightcap of a doubleheader, lifting Boston over the New York Yankees 7-4. The Red Sox rallied from a 3-0 deficit to snap a fourgame skid and head into their final series with a one-game lead over Tampa Bay. Boston held a nine-game lead over the Rays entering play Sept. 4 but has gone 516 since. Up by 1 1⁄2 games to start the day, the Red Sox nearly wasted that entire lead after losing the opener 6-2 despite Ellsbury’s two homers. Boston finishes in Baltimore, while Tampa Bay hosts the Yankees, who already have clinched the AL’s best record and homefield advantage through the championship series. Ellsbury homered off Scott Proctor (0-2) after a single and a walk. Franklin Morales (1-1) pitched two innings for the win. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk deflects a shot from David Moss in Calgary last night.

With every save that Devan Dubnyk made, the Edmonton Oilers gained more confidence. Dubnyk stopped all 30 shots he faced to backstop the Oilers to a 3-0 win over the Calgary Flames in NHL pre-season play last night. “Dubie was great,” said Edmonton head coach Tom Renney. “He was probably the difference maker when we needed him most, there’s no question. “If Calgary gets a goal or

two, we’re a little different team coming back. Devan made it very clear that he was here to win a hockey game and do everything he possibly could to do that and it sort of transferred

from that point to the rest of the hockey club.” Forward Jordan Eberle, who scored once and set up another, also praised Dubnyk’s efforts. “He played great,” Eberle said. “You see your goalie battling like that, you want to help him out. I thought we did that on the power play. He made some key saves especially late in the game to preserve his shutout.” Dubnyk said he’s going

to focus his game on sound positioning. “That’s kind of my biggest thing,” the six-footfive, 210-pounder said. “If I’m in the right spot, for the most part I’m a pretty big guy so pucks will hit me if there’s some weird bounces.” Linus Omark also had a goal and an assist for Edmonton, Shawn Horcoff scored once, and Taylor Fedun had a pair of assists. Rian Lindell, bottom, and Brian Moorman celebrate the Bills’ gamewinning field goal.

Hold on to your seats, the Buffalo Bills are showing they’re for real. Rian Lindell hit a 28-yard field goal as time expired to cap a stunning comeback for a 34-31 victory over the New England Patriots yesterday. The win snapped Buffalo’s 15-game losing streak against the Patriots that dated to 2003, and sparked a wild celebration in which stadium officials guarded the goal posts to ensure fans didn’t bring them down.

The Bills (3-0) won courtesy of yet another Ryan Fitzpatrick-led rally, overcoming a 21-0 second-quarter deficit. It was reminiscent of what the Bills did last week when they came back from down 21-3 to beat Oakland 38-35. Tom Brady threw for 386 yards and four scores for New England (2-1) and set a league record for most yards passing over a threegame stretch, but matched a career-high four interceptions.
