Air museum shuts its doors
The Canadian Air and Space Museum at Downsview Park closed to the public yesterday. The museum has until the end of March 2012 to find a new home for its collection of Canadian flight history. Visitors yesterday were invited to sign a petition and museum officials remain confident the museum and park will come to an agreement.
The TTC is apologizing to riders with disabilities who are struggling to roll their wheelchairs onto the new Toronto Rocket subway trains. The Rockets have many accessibility features, including flip-up seats to accommodate wheelchairs, mobility devices and strollers. Decals and blue lights on the train exterior indicate the doors closest to those designated accessible areas. But, depending on the station and the passenger loads they’re carrying, the new trains sometimes sit too high above the platform for wheelchair users to board. The first time a Toronto Rocket pulled up in front of Jordan Lavoie, 22, at Eglinton, he couldn’t get his motorized wheelchair up over the threshold. “It’s a nice train, but if you can’t get on it, the interior doesn’t matter,” he said. Lavoie, a freelance graphic
designer who has muscular dystrophy, said he’s heard complaints from friends, including a similar problem at the Dundas station. TTC spokesman Brad Ross confirmed the Toronto Rocket’s door threshold is not parallel with the platform, causing some problems for people with wheelchairs and mobility devices. “When large numbers of people disembark, (the Toronto Rocket) reacts much more quickly than the (older) T1 or H cars and pumps the air suspension up,” said Ross. The old T1 subways have worn wheels and tracks so they ride lower than the new trains, he said. The TTC’s engineers are looking for solutions. If someone can’t board a Rocket train, Ross advised waiting for the next, most likely an older train that will accommodate the rider’s needs. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Internet voting a game changer COLIN MCCONNELL/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Internet voting in advanced polls in Markham has helped increase overall voter turnout, engage non-voters to vote and greatly improve overall voter satisfaction, according to a research and public opinion report released today. In the report by Delvinia,
Michelle Huycke of Markham voted online in the last election.

a digital strategy firm, voter turnout in Markham has increased by 35 per cent since the introduction of Internet voting in 2003, and much of that is attributed to the advent of online voting. Eighty municipal elections in Canada have used Internet voting. Michelle Huycke, 64, was among those early online voters in Markham last year.
She was among the 91 per cent of Internet voters who cast their ballot from home and among the 99 per cent who were satisfied with the online voting process. Elections Ontario plans to have a pilot Internet voting test in 2012 and must report back to the legislature about alternative voting technologies. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Son bullied to death, dad says CONTRIBUTED
Disabled Pickering boy took his life after he was mugged, bullied By his 11th birthday, Mitchell Wilson had already endured a lifetime of pain. He was eight when his mother died of cancer three years ago. The next year he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, a degenerative and incurable disease that was slowly destroying his muscles and would one day leave him paralyzed. And last November, while on one of his prescribed daily walks, Mitchell was jumped by a 12-year-old boy he knew from his elementary school in Pickering. The older child, who was after the iPhone Mitchell borrowed from his father to listen to music while he walked, smashed Mitchell’s face into the pavement so hard he broke some of the boy’s teeth. The attack, Mitchell’s
parents say, led their son on a downward spiral that culminated in his suicide earlier this month. “He was never the same after the mugging,” said Mitchell’s father, Craig Wilson, who found his son’s lifeless body on Sept. 6 — a plastic bag tied around the young boy’s head — when he went to wake him up for what would have been his first day of Grade 6. The alleged mugger was arrested the day after the attack, charged with assault and removed from Westcreek Public School. Wilson is hoping that by speaking to the media, visiting schools and telling Mitchell’s story he can prevent other kids from being bullied and educate people about what it’s like to live with a disability. “Ultimately everybody has to be nicer to each other.” TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Political pollsters feeling the heat
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2011
Campaign. Stop
Scrutinizing methods amid controversial results and public skepticism Is polling art, science or bit of both? For a half-century in Canada, pollsters have been turning the art of partisan politics into a science, of sorts. But the year 2011 — with its bundle of federal and provincial elections — could be shaping up as a time of reckoning for the political-polling industry. “Skepticism is growing, increasingly, everywhere,” said Mike Colledge, a pollster with Ipsos, whose company shook up the business this month with a sharply written assault on what it sees as dubious “innovations” from competitors. Canada’s eight leading pollsters gathered in Ottawa on Thursday at a ses-
sion hosted by the Market Research Intelligence Association. Not surprisingly, all of them concluded they’re mostly right, most of the time. Nevertheless, questions have arisen this year about the impediments and limits to their accuracy. For example, why were Canadians taken by surprise when the New Democrats surged in Quebec and the Conservatives won a majority in May? And who even answers telephone polls anymore? Frank Graves of EKOS
has probably been the most publicly penitent of the pollsters since the federal election on May 2, dwelling on why his preelection numbers were so out of sync with the Conservative-majority result. Graves doesn’t blame the prevailing technology or methods. Rather, he believes pollsters are still focused on measuring public opinion as a whole, while the voting public is a much narrower, older, particular demographic. Pollsters, he said, should be looking for ways to measure what could be very difficult to gauge in any “scientific” way. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

A quiet weekend pledge to scrap a gas-fired power plant in Mississauga forced Premier Dalton McGuinty onto the defensive yesterday as his rivals slammed the move as a crass attempt to grab votes. McGuinty said the community had changed significantly since the plant was proposed by the Liberals in 2005, which was why the party had changed tack.

NDP plan reckless: Liberals The Liberals called the New Democrat financial blueprint containing a $2-

It’s not clear whether he stopped because the next line was too low for his range, if he became self-conscious that he’s no Johnny Cash, or he was sick of singing solo, but it wasn’t because the train was gone.

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath speaks to media about her party’s fiscal framework in Toronto yesterday.
Ontario’s New Democrats released their financial blueprint containing a $2billion contingency fund yesterday as they positioned themselves as the party with the best plan to handle another economic slump. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath called the approach sound in light of the uncertain times ahead. “We believe we put forward a very cautious and prudent and realistic plan,” Horwath said. “If things get bad, we have put in place a plan to help (people) weather the tough times, and still be
able to meet our fiscal goals.” The NDP bases its numbers on the more cautious assumptions from the 2011 budget, unlike the Liberals and the Tories, who are assuming revenue growth of between $400 million and $500 million over the next four years. Given the shaky state of the global economy, the NDP calls the other parties’ assumptions a gamble, because the province would end up with an even bigger deficit if their projections prove optimistic. The New Democrats also said their platform would cost $3.3 billion, compared to $3.6 billion for the Liberals and almost $6 billion for the Tories. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Settlement freeze still an obstacle in peace talks The Quartet of Mideast mediators — the U.S., European Union, Russia and UN — issued a statement on Friday calling for a resumption of peace talks without preconditions and a target for a final agreement by the end of 2012. Israel’s foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, said yesterday that his government should accept the Quartet proposal. But Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas signalled it was a nonstarter as long as it doesn’t include a settlement freeze. “We will not accept anything but ... a halt to settlement construction completely,” he said. Amid the impasse, both Israeli and Palestinian officials have expressed fears that the tensions could
explode into violence. One Palestinian was killed in the West Bank on Friday after a clash between settlers and villagers. Yesterday, residents in the same village, Qusra, found 400 olive trees uprooted or destroyed. They blamed residents of a nearby hardline settlement. Farmer Ayman Odeh said the trees were laden with ripe olives — an important cash crop for the village. “Imagine how long we worked on those trees, to see them broken now,” Odeh said. Extremist settlers frequently destroy Palestinian-owned olive trees to protest what they feel is unfair treatment by the Israeli government. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

UN bid rejuvenates leader’s legacy Recognition speech bolsters popularity at home Israel, U.S. oppose the bid, saying no substitute for negotiations BERNAT ARMANGUE/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Supporters hold signs and cheer as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas speaks to the crowd at his Ramallah headquarters yesterday.
President Mahmoud Abbas received a hero’s welcome yesterday from thousands of cheering, flag-waving Palestinians, having made a bid for United Nations recognition that appears destined to fail but has allowed him to finally step out of the shadow of his iconic predecessor Yasser Arafat. The dynamic public appearance was a noticeable change for the 76-year-old Abbas, who was elected shortly after Arafat’s death seven years ago. While Arafat was known for his trademark olivegreen military garb and fiery speeches, Abbas favours suits and typically drones on in monotone.
“We have told the world that there is the Arab Spring, but the Palestinian Spring is here...” PRESIDENT MAHMOUD ABBAS
Abbas’ calls for nonviolence and his successes in
restoring law and order to the West Bank have won him respect in Israel and abroad. But at home, he is often seen as weak and ineffectual in his dealings with Israel and the rival Hamas movement, which seized control of the Gaza Strip from his forces in 2007. It is unclear what the UN application will actually accomplish. The U.S., as a member of the Security Council, has already promised to veto the request if the Palestinians can muster the nine votes needed for passage — which itself is far from certain. Our leader, our teacher, our friend. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Stephen E. Dupuis, President and CEO of the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) on September 23, 2011. A dedicated family man and proud resident of Aurora, Ontario, Stephen is survived by his wife Linda and two children Kendall and Carson. Stephen served as the inspirational leader of the building industry association for more than 25 years. He was the highly-visible face of the association with spiky hair, a razor-sharp sense of humour and a clear message. Throughout Stephen’s career he was a consummate professional. He was extremely adaptive to the ever-changing political and economic landscapes. He always put the members’ needs first and he penned thousands of newspaper and magazine columns highlighting industry issues and consumer concerns, making BILD a leading advocacy association in the Greater Toronto Area. He joined the association in 1988 in a government relations capacity following stints with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (1985-1988) and the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (1982-1985). Stephen was the Executive Vice-President of the Greater Toronto Home Builders’ Association and was instrumental in the seamless merger with the Urban Development Institute in 2006, when he was named its first President and CEO of what is known today as BILD. Stephen worked tirelessly for BILD, the Ontario Home Builders’ Association (OHBA) and the Canadian Home Builders’ Association. He passionately championed a community partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Exemplifying strength and unity, he will always be remembered by his colleagues and peers as a source of strength, experience and wisdom, which he was always willing to share. On Thursday, he was honoured by his peers at the OHBA with the inaugural David Horton Lifetime Leadership Award of Excellence, which he emotionally told friends was one of the proudest moments of his career. To us at BILD, he was more than the President and CEO, he was more than our boss. He was our no-nonsense leader. He made things happen, he valued what was important and always knew the right thing to say and do. He was our leader, our teacher, our friend. Whatever the situation was, Stephen knew there was a song about it and he kept us whistling with his uncanny ability to quickly quote lines from his library of favourite tunes. His sharp wit, humour and boisterous laugh still resonates in the halls of 20 Upjohn, where we will always continue to celebrate him and the impact he has left on our lives.
Our leader, our teacher, our friend. Stephen E. Dupuis 1959-2011
When Stephen would take to the podium at BILD events, he would always announce how proud he was to be President and CEO of BILD. Stephen, BILD and its 1,350 member companies are proud of you. You will be celebrated. You will be remembered. You will be greatly missed.

Denounces American claim that army supports terrorism Warns U.S. against sending in troops Pakistan’s army chief convened a special meeting of senior commanders yesterday after U.S. allegations that the military’s spy agency helped Haqqani insurgents to attack American targets in Afghanistan, the army said. Pakistan also summoned home its foreign minister from a trip to the United States to discuss the American allegations. Senior Pakistani officials have accused the U.S. of trying to make Pakistan a scapegoat for its troubled war in Afghanistan. The confrontation has plunged the already rocky U.S.-Pakistan alliance to new lows. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
War of words Adm. Mike Mullen, a senior U.S. military officer, has accused Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency of supporting the militant Haqqani network in planning and executing an assault on the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan on Sept. 13 as well as a truck bomb that wounded 77 U.S. soldiers. Despite the seriousness of the U.S. claims, which appear to accuse Pakistan of state-sponsored terrorism, Mullen and other officials say Washington needs to keep negotiating with Islamabad.

Calgarian convinced many that pieces of space junk fell in Alberta JEREMY NOLAIS

Borrowing from a staged radio drama bought by many, a Calgary filmmaker perpetrated a spacejunk hoax that sparked worldwide attention over the weekend. Sebastian Salazar was watching his Twitter feed
fill with discussion of NASA’s dying Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) shortly before midnight Friday. An anomaly over Okotoks, Alta., on one weather image sparked speculation that debris from the 6.5ton craft could land in the city south of Calgary. One particular tweet expressing fear that aliens could be living in the satel-
lite caught Salazar’s attention, reminding him of Orson Welles’ fake 1938 radio broadcast War of the Worlds, which led many to believe aliens had landed. He pulled transcripts from the broadcast and began tweeting them out as live events occurring on a farm in the Okotoks area. “People weren’t even checking for legitimacy anymore,” Salazar said
yesterday. To provide “proof” of the debris, Salazar gathered some tubing and a piece of scrap metal from his family’s camper and took a photo. RCMP spokesperson Tim Taniguchi said Salazar likely won’t face reprimand for his actions, despite some expressing outrage over the hoax online.
Sebastian Salazar holds a picture of UARS and some tubing he used to help perpetrate a hoax that captured the attention of millions around the world.

Husband faces murder charge About 200 people hold candlelight vigil outside U.S. building where missing Montreal woman’s body found FACEBOOK.COM
A New Jersey man has been charged with killing his Canadian-born wife after police found her remains in a cement-filled drum. Prosecutors said Steven Acuna was charged after police found the remains of Randy Lehrer on Friday in the basement of a Jersey City building where she lived with her husband and infant daughter. Lehrer, 32, is originally from Montreal and still has family in the city. Acuna reported her missing Aug. 17 after an argument. Investigators in Hudson County said they believe

the killing was a domestic violence situation. Irene Theofanibis, a friend of Lehrer’s, said Lehrer had told her about threats made by her husband. “She was afraid,” Theofanibis said. Acuna was being held
yesterday at the Hudson County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1-million US bail. A Facebook group was created to raise money to help bring Lehrer’s body back to Montreal for a funeral and pay for legal fees that would return her child to the city. “I hope they bring that baby to Canada,” a woman who identified herself as Amie Scarola wrote on Facebook. “At least they will always let her know who her mom is (and) how much she loves (and) cares about her.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Says Canada expects to be compliant with new banking rules by early stages of implementation period Canada’s Mark Carney yesterday waded into one of the most touchy and controversial issues facing the American financial system, dismissing concerns — or excuses — about banking reform. Speaking at a financial convention in Washington, the Bank of Canada governor gave a spirited defence of new international rules, and chided resisters as either misconceived or fatalistic. He noted that such thinking led to abuses and excessive risk-taking that resulted in the recent col-

lapse of the system, leading to a worldwide recession that is still haunting economies today. He reserved his scorn for what he called the most often cited objection — that the uncertainty about proposed new requirements for greater bank capital reserves is al-
ready drying up credit and contributing to the current economic weakness. He scoffed at the suggestion. “Really?” he asked. He pointed out that it is a far greater probability that credit has slowed not because of a reluctance to lend, but because would-be borrowers can’t afford more debt. A prominent asbestos merchant is headed to Parliament Hill in a broad counter-offensive to salvage the reputation of his beleaguered industry. Baljit Chadha is fighting back after Canada’s asbestos sector has absorbed a public-relations pummelling, both here and abroad, in recent months. The Quebec government is considering whether to help Chadha save one of Canada’s last two asbestos mines, in the town of Asbestos, with an Oct. 1 deadline looming on a decision. Chadha is determined to dispel what he describes as myths about the contentious mineral, which he argues has been unfairly vilified by a highly organized “anti-asbestos lobby.” Chadha plans face-toface meetings today with his most vocal critics, including New Democrat MP Pat Martin. Even if Congress heeds U.S. President Barack Obama’s demands to enact his jobs and tax plan in its entirety, the U.S. unemployment rate probably still would hover in nosebleed territory for at least three more years. Why? Because the 1.9 million new jobs the bill is expected to produce in 2012 falls short of what’s needed to put the U.S. economy back on track to return to pre-recession jobless levels of under 6 per cent, from the current rate of 9.1 per cent.

Lobbyists reject push to rejig Greece debt The international banklobbying group that has been taking a leading role in negotiations on giving debt-ridden Greece easier terms for its bonds yesterday rejected calls to impose larger losses on private investors. Forcing private creditors to write down their Greek bond holdings by more than the 21 per cent tentatively agreed to in a July deal would quickly cause a “domino effect” that would see the crisis spread to other parts of Europe, warned Josef Ackermann, the outgoing chairman of the Institute of International Finance. Germany and other rich eurozone nations have been pushing for a re-negotiation of the July deal, arguing that the economic situation in Greece has significantly deteriorated and may require a steeper cut in the country’s debt burden. DUST MITES: THE COMMON TRIGGER
DUST MITE ALLERGEN is the most common trigger for allergy and asthma throughout the world; yet many allergy sufferers are not even aware they are allergic to dust mite. Dust mites are microscopic bugs which live in mattresses, c a r p e t s , furniture and bedding. N o r m a l activities, like dusting, making your bed or sleeping can trigger your allergy symptoms. Current therapies include the common over-the-counter antihistamines, as well as prescription medications. Please talk to your doctor about the treatment of your allergies. Cetero Research, a world leader in conducting research to test anti-allergy and asthma drugs, frequently conducts what are known as Allergic Rhinitis or “Allergy” clinical trials. These studies typically involve periods of time in our environmental exposure
room which is an allergy testing facility where we expose individuals to allergens like dust mites in a safe and controlled manner. This is done to test the medication by seeing how your symptoms are before and after medication.
A number of drug companies who specialize in allergy medications recognize the benefits of Cetero’s research models and have worked with Cetero to test new and innovative treatments, such as new Immunotherapies (“allergy shots” and now even drops or dissolving tablets that go under the tongue). Previous studies show that immunotherapy may not only relieve your current allergy and asthma symptoms while you are taking it, but may also act to change the underlying causes of the disease and possibly even cure you of allergies.
Clinical Research Needs Your Help! Cetero Research is always looking for males and females who may be eligible to participate in our clinical trials. If you qualify for study participation, Cetero will provide financial compensation for your time and travel expenses. If you are interested in learning more or would like to register in our database to be contacted for future studies, call 905629-5777 and speak with our Volunteer Contact Centre. A WORD ON PEDESTRIANS The archaic and rarely heard clickity-clack of fingers on a typewriter echoes down Queen Street West. It’s Thursday at 11 p.m., and Kaile H. LIA GRAINGER Glick is furiously pounding on METRO TORONTO her 1950s Smith Corona Skyriter. Slowly but surely, a small crowd gathers around her modest setup, which includes a folding chair, a small table, an upside-down hat, and a homemade sign that reads, “The Spontaneous Prose Store.” Glick looks up at her curious audience and asks them: “Topic, title or first line?” The 22-year-old poet has been taking to the streets to write personalized prose since the beginning of June. “How can I get paid to write?” says Glick of the conundrum that inspired the project, echoing a common “Glick will write sentiment in literary circles. “This is my attempt to you a custom a legitimate piece of prose — become wordsmith.” usually 10 to 12 Glick hails from Toronto lines — based on but spent several years in Halifax and then San your suggestion Francisco and found it diffiof a topic, title or cult to break into the local poetry and reading scene upfirst line.” on her return. “For poets in Toronto, resources are limited,” says Glick. Inspired by musician busker friends, she decided to try her luck writing directly for the people. For whatever you’re willing to donate, Glick will write you a custom piece of prose — usually 10 to 12 lines — based on your suggestion of a topic, title or first line. “There are a lot of requests related to love or revenge,” says Glick. “And if there are kids around, cats.” The creative process usually takes about three to six minutes, and donations range from a few cents to $50, though most people drop a few bucks in the hat. She says she makes about $50 to $80 an outing, and she does it a couple times a week. “Yorkville is a good spot, because they only carry billfolds — no change,” says Glick with a laugh. She’s set up shop all over the city this summer and is currently looking for an indoor home. Glick takes a carbon copy of everything she writes, and this November she’ll be publishing an anthology of the hundreds of pieces she’s created so far. “It’s been a really empowering experience to engage people this way,” says Glick. “When they throw money in my hat I’m like, ‘You’re paying me for this?’ It surprises me every time.” See where Glick will be setting up shop next at thespontaneousprosestore.wordpress.com.

Sam Childers has had quite the unique life, going from a drug addict, convict and to a man of God who works tirelessly to rescue orphans in war-torn countries around the world. Dubbed the Machine Gun Preacher for his faith in both scripture and firearms while building orphanages in Sudan over the past decade, Childers has met with a surprising amount of resistance to his work. But resistance, he says, he can handle. How about the glare of the Hollywood spotlight? He now finds himself being portrayed by Gerrard Butler on the big screen; his past deeds, both good and bad, out for the world to see — and some of them, he tells Metro, never even happened.

SEPTEMBER 27 An all-day event that includes a fashion show, instant prizes, draws, and surprise savings!
Less work wearhouse. More you.
The real Sam Childers, right, poses with Gerard Butler, who portrays him in the new movie, Machine Gun Preacher.
Do you take issue with anything presented in the film?
It started inside of Sudan when I first got there. When I started building the orphanage in 2000, I slept on a grass mat, and a lot of the village people would see me with a machine gun on one side and a bible on the other side, so they started saying, “This man is a preacher! But he has a machine gun!” So they started calling me the Machine Gun Preacher. Here in the U.S. there were a couple of stories titled Machine Gun Preacher trying to discredit me. The first time I read one I was kind of worked up, and God said, “Claim that name.” It gets people’s attention.
There was a few things that I did not do in that movie. There’s a few things that might have been amped up in the movie, like the action scenes, but there’s enough good that I’m satisfied. The one part in the movie where it had me robbing a drug dealer and saying a bad word to him because he’s a black man — I’ve never done that before. Have I robbed drug dealers? A lot of them. But I’ve never used that kind of language. My dad’s mother died when he was five years old, and he was raised by a black lady. So I grew up respecting people for who they are. I grew up not looking at colour.
Did you have much say over what parts of your life ended up on screen?
Were you surprised by how the resistance your work has met with?
No, not really. To be honest with you, they didn’t use the most violent parts of my life. If they were going to really cover my life, they would’ve had to make a series. There’s no way it could be done in one movie. And I hear there’s even talk of doing some other stuff, too. Maybe they will. It’s all in God’s hands.
You’ll be surprised. There’s a lot of people that [don’t agree with me]. I had a reporter yesterday totally against guns, and I asked him, “Well, your mother is across the street, she’s been raped by rebels. You have a gun right here. What would you do?” And he says, “I don’t know, I have to think about it.” I said,
“You don’t love your mother.” Bottom line. How can we say we have to think about it if it’s our mother, our brother or our sister or a child getting raped by rebels? Why do you got to think? Why do you think other countries have been getting more attention than Sudan?
You know, maybe it was just their season. Maybe it was just their time to get it. And I believe that, along with this movie and a lot of other people that are going to be speaking out, I believe that Sudan is going to get that attention now. I believe that this movie is not about Sam Childers. I believe that this movie is literally going to change a nation. South Sudan is doing a wonderful job of building their infrastructure, but Northern Sudan is still giving problems. All of these little rebel groups are all being fueled and financed by the president of Northern Sudan, Omar al-Bashir. In Darfur, there’s over 6,000 children dying per month, and that’s from war crimes, starvation, disease and stuff like that. So there’s a serious problem. Our only hope is that this man will be taken out of office.

Jack Huston talks about the chilling and endearing character he plays on Boardwalk Empire As an actor, Jack Huston works wonders with just half a face, a gravelly, flat voice and cruel difficulty speaking. There is something so affecting about how brave and how lost he is.” Even with limited screen time on the character-packed, actor-rich Boardwalk, Harrow last year had a similarly wrenching effect on viewers, haunting them as a combat-maimed conscience in his post-war America and as the ghoulish psychopath a war creates. The series returned for its new season yesterday, with Huston upgraded from recurring player to a regular cast member, while his character promises to be even more galvanizing as a figure of both pathos and dread. “The character took on a life of his own,” says Huston, and, however tormented such a life might be, “that’s nice.”

In a few months the baby on the cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind album will be old enough to drink. Although two decades have passed since it came out, no single album has shaken up the music industry and popular culture since. Some of the new mixes are so revealing and raw that songs you have been hearing for two decades sound brand new. Here we look back with some of the people who

Is Sarah Palin a
bad mom? GETTY IMAGES
The Rogue, a controversial new book by journalist Joe McGinniss, paints Sarah Palin, the former Alaskan governor, as a coke-snorting, sexually loose harridan. It’s unflattering, especially for a mother of five. We shared some of the most-headline-making accusations with Tanith Carey, a family expert, journalist and author of Where Has My Little Girl Gone? Moms out there might find themselves in similar situations. What should they do?

Palin may have done drugs in the past The book alleges Palin snorted cocaine off an oil drum during a snowmobiling trip. SAYS CAREY: “If you did take

Explain why and how you made the decision to stop taking them — and make it clear what your attitude is to them now.”
• DON’T — Rub the stain. This will cause the stain to penetrate further into the fabric. • DO — Dampen the stain using only cold water. For blood stains gently place salt onto the area and fold the stain letting the salt absorb. When the blood is nearly gone, launder in cold water with a detergent that works in cold water.

likely they have already guessed there is something wrong, so be honest. Don’t try and justify it — or get them to see your partner as the villain. Expect to face a lot of anger if you are the person who cheated in a marriage, as kids will see it as an abandonment of them, as well as your spouse. But keep them talking.” She may have been sexually promiscuous … allegedly with Miami Heat basketball star Glen Rice. SAYS CAREY: “If you are
asked about your sexual history, the best policy is to be truthful and tell them about your own experiences in an age appropriate way. But also underline how important sex is at its best as part of a meaningful long-term relationship. Explain that it’s never a good idea to use sex to validate yourself or fix an insecurity — as it rarely works.” She would reportedly leave her kids to “fend for themselves” One source reportedly tells McGinniss: “‘I’d walk into that kitchen and Bristol and Willow would be sitting there with a burnt pot of Kraft mac and cheese on the stove … and Sarah would be up in her bedroom with the door closed say-

ing she didn’t want to be disturbed.’" SAYS CAREY: “Of all the ac-
cusations, this is potentially the most damaging. It is at the serious end of spectrum of accusations that are levelled against mothers. As such, it’s also most likely to cause the most long-term damage to the parent-child relationship because it implies neglect, which goes against all we expect from parents. In Palin’s case, it would very much depend on how often this happened and how old her kids were at the time — and what the risks to them were. But we do live in a society where mothers are expected to wait on kids hand and foot from the tweens and beyond — and that is not good for their independence or selfesteem. Mothers also need to be able to acknowledge that they need down-time too.” SAM CASTONE

Let’s start with the term. What you’re searching for is called socially responsible investing (SRI). SRI is what you get when environmental, social and governance factors come together in the selection and management of investments. SRI investments take into account environmental sustainability or stewardship, labour practices, human rights and corporate governance. Chances are good — but not guaranteed —
“SRI investments take into account environmental sustainability.” that you won’t be supporting businesses involved in alcohol, tobacco, gambling, weapons or mining. It also goes beyond “green” companies. Investments are screened for things like human-rights violations, community involvement and environmental performance. And why shouldn’t you be able to align your financial goals with your personal values? An excellent Canadian resource is the Social Investment Organization. It’s a national membership-based organization that in-
cludes financial institutions, investment firms, financial advisors and various organizations and individuals interested in socially responsible investment. The organization has a series of fact sheets designed to answer questions like “Do social investors sacrifice returns?” or “What is community investing?” Although most mainstream banks don’t carry ethical funds, most credit unions do, so it’s worth asking. We can play the supply-and-demand game, too. The more of us that ask for socially responsible investments, the better. David Suzuki Foundation

Horrible bosses can be psychos too: Study ROMINA MCGUINNESS
LIFE@METRONEWS.CA METRO WORLD NEWS IN LONDON
Do you hate your boss? Does their vileness go beyond them passing your work off as their own or making you deal with their dirty laundry? Paul Babiak, psychologist and co-author of Snakes in Suits: When Psychopaths Go to Work, analyzed the personality traits of over 200 corporate professionals across America. He used the standard Psychopathy Checklist developed by co-author Robert Hare from University of British Columbia. He found that four per cent of them exceeded or reached the cut off point for psychopathy — that’s an average of one in 25 people. Although psychos are
weak on paper, Babiak suggests that they thrive in the corporate world thanks to their ability to convince upper management of their strengths. “Psychopaths always make a good first impression. They are both charming and grandiose. In reality, they have low managerial skills and have zero loyalty to their company or profession. All they care
about is themselves,” he explained to Metro. In short, psychopaths hide behind a beautiful mask. They come across as charismatic leaders but underneath there’s nothing but a hollow core. Studies have shown them to have difficulty in understanding the true nature of feeling, explaining their emotional poverty and acute insensitiveness. Half of Babiak’s maniac clients have come from the financial service industry. Could the desire for money be meddling with the mind? “They’re parasitic predators, opportunists that latch on to people like parasites and suck out their resources. They seek an easy way to live life so are naturally attracted to where the money is: financial business.”

Cards draw within one of Braves The St. Louis Cardinals pulled within one game of the Atlanta Braves in the NL wild-card race as Rafael Furcal hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning yesterday in a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs. St. Louis trailed Atlanta by 10 1⁄2 games on Aug. 26, but the Cardinals have won 15 of their last 20. Trailing 2-1, St. Louis tied it in the seventh on Yadier Molina’s 14th homer. The next inning, Furcal homered off Randy Wells. Making what might have been his final home appearance for the Cardinals, Albert Pujols went 0 for 4 and stopped his streak of reaching base in 40 successive games. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Remaining games The Cardinals close the regular season with a three-game series at Houston (55-104), which has the worst record in the major leagues. Atlanta hosts Philadelphia (99-60), which has the best mark in the majors.

Tampa Bay Rays’ Ben Zobrist is called safe as he dives into home plate after an inside-the-park home run during the first inning of yesterday’s game.
The Tampa Bay Rays are focusing on their playoff push rather than the shocking slide of the Boston Red Sox. B.J. Upton and Ben Zobrist homered in the first inning to back Wade Davis, and the Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2 yesterday to pull within a half-game of the Red Sox for the AL wild-card lead. “It’s more about the ascension of the Rays right

Rian Lindell and Brian Moorman celebrate the Bills’ game-winning field goal yesterday.
Hold on to your seats, the Buffalo Bills are showing they’re for real. Rian Lindell hit a 28-yard field goal as time expired to cap a stunning comeback for a 34-31 victory over the New England Patriots yesterday. The win snapped Buffalo’s 15-game losing streak against the Patriots that dated to 2003, and sparked a wild celebration in which stadium officials guarded the goal posts to ensure fans didn’t bring them down.
The Bills (3-0) won courtesy of yet another Ryan Fitzpatrick-led rally, overcoming a 21-0 second-quarter deficit. It was reminiscent of what the Bills did last week when they came back from down 21-3 to beat Oakland 38-35. Tom Brady threw for 386 yards and four scores for New England (2-1) and set a league record for most yards passing over a threegame stretch, but matched a career-high four interceptions. Matthew Stafford threw for 378 yards and two TDs to rally the Lions (3-0) from a 20-0 deficit before Jason Hanson kicked a 32-yard field goal in overtime as Detroit beat the Minnesota Vikings (0-3) 26-23. Cam Newton didn’t pass for a ton of yards, he simply found Greg Olsen over the middle for a 16-yard TD with 4:20 left to lift Carolina (1-2) to a 16-10 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-2).

Ticats cruise to win in Moncton
CFL returns East for second game
Marcus Thigpen made the most of his first start of the season as a Tiger-Cats receiver. Thigpen caught two of Kevin Glenn’s three touchdown passes and ran in a missed field goal as Hamilton took this year’s Touchdown Atlantic game with a 55-36 victory over the Calgary Stampeders yesterday in Moncton, N.B. The Ticats improved to 6-6 on the season while Calgary dropped to 7-5 after
the CFL’s second visit out East, which drew 20,153 to the University of Moncton campus. Thigpen’s highlight play came when he returned Rene Paredes’ missed field goal 118 yards to give Hamilton a 34-21 lead heading into the final quarter. He finished with 274 yards receiving. Glenn finished 16-for-23 with 276 yards and no interceptions. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Leafs make more camp cuts Toronto sends promising centre Colborne to Marlies for further seasoning DAVID COOPER/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Who’s next? The Maple Leafs cut 14 players yesterday to get down to a more workable roster of 29. But that’s still six too many as camp heats up for the final three exhibition games. “The players are dictating this, said Leafs assistant general manager Dave Poulin. “Some people are making decisions very difficult for us right now, which is the beauty of depth in an organization. “This is what we want. We want it to be really, really difficult to decide who gets to be on the Toronto Maple Leafs. That means we’re a better hockey club. Joe Colborne, believed to be in the running for third-line duty, was among those sent to the Marlies. “He played well in spurts, but he has to get more consistent. He knows that. And as is the
“As we get better as a hockey team, the bar keeps getting higher and higher. It’s not good enough just to make the team ... you have to contribute.
Maple Leaf Joe Colborne warms-up before a pre-season game against the Ottawa Senators last Monday.

As Leafs assistant GM Dave Poulin pointed out, cuts are only temporary. The roster that finishes the year is rarely the same as the one that starts. Here are some spots to follow as camp continues:
Tyler Bozak [centre] Had been having a great camp until a recent injury. If the Leafs are interested in Phoenix holdout Kyle Turris, things could get very uncomfortable. Mike Komisarek [defence] Having a good camp, looking very confident. Has a limited no-trade clause and a list of about 10 teams he’d accept a trade to. He’s from Long Island, and the Islanders need a defenceman ... so connect the dots. Carl Gunnarsson [defence] May be the Leafs’ best overall defenceman. But there’s no hype and he might be
too nice for his own good. He’s a John Ferguson draft pick and there are fewer and fewer of them around.
Bubble Boys Nazem Kadri [forward]: He’s just 20. If he doesn’t make the team out of camp he’ll be called up pretty quickly. He has plenty of time to develop. Matt Frattin [forward]: He’s 23 and his window for success may be shorter. He has to prove quickly that he can score in the NHL. Coming out of college, it may be better to start in the AHL. Jake Gardiner [defence]: The star of camp so far. He may deserve to make the team, but numbers will probably dictate he starts with the Marlies. Ben Scrivens [goalie]: The best goalie in camp so far, but he’s destined for the Marlies barring an injury to James Reimer or Jonas Gustavsson. He may be No. 2 on depth chart, but he has to play a ton and won’t if he’s with the Leafs. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

case with most young players, they have to get more consistency, said Poulin. “There’s a lot of guys who can play this game for one or two or three games. But you have to play it over the course of the season and be consistent. Luca Caputi, Jeff Finger, Ryan Hamilton and Mike Zigomanis were put on waivers. They’ll know by noon tomorrow if another team is interested, or if they’ll play for the AHL Marlies.
