Between 2000, when the first cameras were installed, and 2009, the program drained more in costs than it took in via fines. But last year, when fines were boosted to $325 from $180, the program generated $800,000 for the city. The report says that by increasing the program’s effectiveness, the city can glean even more money while continuing to increase safety. Mississauga takes shark fin off menu

Mississauga councillors unanimously adopted a bylaw yesterday that bans the possession and sale of shark-fin products in the city. The decision makes Mississauga the largest city in Canada to ban the controversial products, the consumption of which has pushed many of the world’s

shark species to the brink of extinction. The move came a day before a Toronto council committee was to address the issue, and following introduction of a ban in Oakville in July. At the municipal level, much of the debate revolves around whether cities have the jurisdiction

If the enrolment projections prove accurate, by that time the board will technically have enough students to fill all of its current elementary schools. “I think there’s a sense now of finally, we’ve hit the bottom and that curve is starting to increase. We are actually in a position of starting to recover what we’ve lost,” said Daryl Sage, director of strategy and planning for the Toronto District School Board, who recently presented trustees

Library sees boom in e-book use

Library growth

It looks like e-books are easy reading. The Toronto Public Library is reporting that digital downloads from its site will hit 500,000 this year, double the number from 2010 and more than 10 times what they were in 2007. “This is a huge jump,” said Anne Marie Aikins, the library’s manager of community relations. “And, incidentally, book borrowing is increasing slightly, as well, so the book isn’t dead. That’s for sure.” The library had its busiest year in 2010, with 18 million visits and 32 million items circulated. But the library may have to limit additions to its digital and print collections this year, as it searches for ways to cut the mandated 10 per cent —

He’s a long-distance runner whose own coach concedes is not as fast as he used to be. “We’ve learned to pace ourselves a little bit better,” said trainer Harmander Singh. Then again, Fauja Singh, no relation, was 89 years old when he started competing in races. And now he’s 100. “I am but a simple man,” Singh the competitor, a Sikh with a long white beard who only speaks Punjabi, said in a translated statement. “I give it my best shot and it happens that the results are better than others.” The centenarian, who lives in the United Kingdom by way of India, is ready to compete in Sunday’s Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in an attempt to land a Guinness World Record.

or $17 million — from its 2011 operating budget to reduce the city’s deficit. The recommended staff cuts will be released this afternoon in advance of Monday’s library board meeting. Although Aikins wouldn’t say what the recommendations involved, she did say closing library branches isn’t one of them.

He who laughs stays warm CONTRIBUTED

Canadians are funniest people on the planet — maybe because it’s so cold outside: Comedy Awards creator Her sister may have been the prom queen, but Debra DiGiovanni is getting the last laugh. “I have a fraternal twin sister who was the prom queen and I was not invited to the prom. I did her hair for the prom,” said DiGiovanni, who regularly riffs on her unglamorous life as a standup comic and a regular on MTV’s Video on Trial. DiGiovanni is seeking her third win as Best Female Standup when the Canadian Comedy Awards and Festival opens for a five-day run from Thursday to Monday. Former standup and sketch performer Tim Progosh said he co-founded the awards in 2000 to recognize the fact “we’re the funniest people on the planet.”

“I don’t know why. It has something to do with the fact its cold and we have to be inside a lot and make each other laugh,” Progosh said. DJ Demers has found being deaf is no barrier to standup. He’s among the nominees for Best Newcomer — an award DiGiovanni won in 2002 — and has found having two hearing aids occasionally comes in handy in front of a rowdy crowd. “I make a lot of jokes about my hearing aids and then I also make a lot of jokes about my jokes about my hearing aids. So I like to address the elephant in the room. It is a part of my life and there’s a lot of humour in it,” said Demers, 25.

Comedian Debra DiGiovanni is seeking her third win at the Canadian Comedy Awards, which start today.

They have travelled the globe, rubbed elbows with celebrities and been cheered as heroes the world over. One year after 33 Chilean miners were winched to the surface from their entombment 700 metres underground, they still get recognition for their incredible saga of endurance and survival. But, perhaps surprisingly, the instant fame and status have brought problems of their own, and the promised riches have never materialized. The Copiapó miners have walked a long road since their dramatic rescue from the San José mine was watched on television by an estimated one billion viewers. Many of the miners say they are worse off now than they were before the accident. Some are without steady jobs and most are still on medical leave recovering from the trauma of having been buried alive for 10 weeks. Fourteen of the miners rely on a government disability pension of $470 a month, but they are still struggling. Now, however, “Los 33”

They have hired the law firm Carey and Company and established a committee to protect their image and sell their story. They have also signed a deal with the William Morris Endeavor agency for film and television projects. Meanwhile,

Hollywood producer Mike Medavoy plans to make a movie of their story based on a book by author Héctor Tobar, which was inspired by miner Victor Segovia’s writings while he was underground. Determined to seek justice, some of the miners have filed a negligence suit against the Chilean govern-

A celebration — then came the hangover It should have been a time of triumph for the 33 rescued Chilean miners. Instead, many of them partied a little too hard, and controversy has emerged over the effectiveness of the care the men received, especially after news surfaced that miner Edison Peña was in rehab for drug and alcohol abuse. Alberto Iturra, chief psychologist of the rescue mission, says his team

couldn’t prevent some situations from occurring. “A struggle began on getting exclusive interviews from the media, not allowing the miners to spend more time with their families,” he said. “Only a few days after their return to the surface, there was an explosive excess of partying and drinking for them. They didn’t even have the time to rest in hospital.”

But Alejandro Pino, manager of the Chilean Safety Association, insists he did everything he could to get the best results from the treatment program. “Medical issues such as alcoholism are not necessarily as a psychological consequence of the accident,” he said. “In truth, the men’s psychological behaviour was much better than we expected anyway.” JORGE ARELLANO IN CHILE

The brinksmanship has begun. Signalling it may not be smooth sailing for Premier Dalton McGuinty’s minority Liberal government, the Progressive Conservatives and the NDP are refusing to cede their advantage in numbers by fielding candidates for Speaker of the Legislature. With the Liberals at 53 seats in the 107-member House — compared to the combined tally of 54 Tories and New Democrats — the opposition parties hope to maintain that crucial edge. To that end, none of the 17 NDP members are willing to stand as the House referee and sources say the 37 Tories are leaning in the same direction. “Why would we? one opposition MPP said

Syrian rally staged: Opponents GETTY IMAGES

Opposition has formed Syrian National Council, but it has not been internationally recognized Tens of thousands of Syrians thronged the main square of the capital, as well as nearby streets, yesterday in a show of support for embattled President Bashar Assad. But opponents charge such rallies are staged by the regime. International pressure is building on Assad to step down over his regime’s bloody crackdown on antigovernment protests. The UN says nearly 3,000 people have been killed so far. The demonstration was intended to show that Assad still enjoys the support of many Syrians. It was huge in comparison with anti-regime protests held across the country since March, which are often met by tear gas and gunfire from police and security. The uprising has challenged the Assad family’s

40-year ruling dynasty, but it has yet to bring out the middle and upper-middle classes in Damascus and Aleppo, the two economic powerhouses. Organizers said the rally was also meant to thank Russia and China for blocking a UN Security Council resolution condemning Syria for its brutal crackdown. On Tuesday, China urged Assad to move toward faster political reform. “We oppose the use of violence and do not wish to see more bloodshed. We believe the Syrian government should swiftly enact their reform commitments ... and resolve problems through dialogue and negotiations,” said a statement by China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin.

A handout picture released by the Syrian Arab News Agency shows a huge banner of Syrian President Bashar Assad hanging on the facade of a building as his supporters rally in Damascus yesterday.

Lady Liberty’s a model specimen

French ambassador Francois Delattre, left, real estate developer Leonard Stern, and New York Commissioner to the UN Marjorie B. Tiven, unveil an exact replica of the Statue of Liberty yesterday in New York.

BEBETO MATTHEWS/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Real estate developer Leonard Stern has acquired the only replica of the Statue of Liberty in the U.S. and will permanently display it in the public plaza of 667 Madison Avenue, a commercial high-rise building he owns in New York. At nine-feet tall, the rare model replica dwarfs its real counterpart, which stands 151 feet. According to French law, only 12 copies can ever be made from Frederic Auguste Bartholdi’s original plaster mold that he blew up to 16 times its size to create one of the most famous sculptures in the world.

It’s sex equality, your majesty Britain’s PM wants to bring laws on royal succession into the 21st century ‘Male superiority’ would end In 21st-century Britain, gender equality is catching up to royalty. Britain’s government is pushing a plan to change the rules on royal succession to provide equal treatment for princes and princesses. As the law stands now, an elder daughter would be passed over as monarch in favour of a younger brother. But under the latest proposal, the first child of Prince William and the former Kate Middleton would eventually become monarch — regardless of sex. Prime Minister David Cameron said he has writ-

Search for baby brings few clues Police take no-holds-barred approach as search continues into 2nd week Lisa Irwin last seen Oct. 3 AP PHOTO/KANSAS CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

Authorities searching for a missing baby in Kansas City have marched shoulder-to-shoulder through woods, rappelled down cliffs and combed through landfills. They’ve interrogated her parents for hours and called in firefighters to search an 11metre well that seemed like a possible place to hide a tiny body. But after receiving more than 300 tips and chasing down many others, police still have no idea what happened to Lisa Irwin, a fair-haired, big-eyed baby, whose first birthday is now only a month away. Police yesterday scoured a new wooded area with 0

abandoned home and cistern, while more than 30 detectives pursued additional leads. Lisa’s mother, Deborah Bradley, said she checked on her daughter late Oct. 3, but the baby was gone early the next morning when her father, Jeremy Irwin, returned home from a late shift at work. The couple told police they frantically searched their home but found only that the house lights were on and a window was open. Yesterday marked the beginning of the search’s second week. Spokesman Capt. Steve Young said police would carry on.

Marathon runner ‘bus’-ted

Going. Home

Spectator shuttle actually powered man to ‘tough’ third-place finish After crossing the finish line in third place and smashing his personal best, Rob Sloan celebrated and boasted how he’d just completed an “unbelievably tough” marathon.

It turns out things weren’t quite what they seemed. Sloan, organizers say, had actually dropped out 32 kilometres into the race, hitched a ride on a

spectator shuttle bus and emerged from the woods near the finish line to make the podium. After initially describing claims that he cheated in Sunday’s Kielder Marathon

Canadian carriers say some of their customers were affected Research In Motion’s reputation for reliability was in tatters and users had another reason to switch to Apple and Android smartphones as technical glitches affecting millions of BlackBerry users for a third day spread to Canada, analysts said yesterday. The BlackBerry outage even reached Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office. His spokesman, Andrew MacDougall, tweeted: “Am being impacted by RIM/Berry service outage — please call if you need to reach me. Outages for RIM’s instant messaging service, email and browsing that started earlier this week in Europe, the Middle East and Africa spread to parts of Canada yesterday as the company worked to restore service.

PayPal looking to ease web shopping Single-account service would keep a user’s personal details within eBay’s online-payment service, it says PayPal, eBay’s online-payment service, has announced a new service that aims to make it easier to shop online by cutting down on the number of accounts consumers have to create with various web retailers. Called PayPal Access, the service was unveiled at eBay’s X.commerce developer conference in San Francisco. It was to be launched with X.commerce, a new eBay Inc. business geared toward developers and merchants that encourages developers to integrate eBay’s technology into mobile commerce apps. X.commerce merges the software developer communities

for eBay.com, PayPal and eBay-owned e-commerce software company Magento, which together include 850,000 developers. Also yesterday, X.commerce planned to roll out a set of developer tools called X.commerce Fabric, which is intended to simplify the process for adding eBay-owned tech-

nology — such as that behind Milo, a local shopping engine eBay bought in 2010 — to apps for smartphones and tablet computers. And the conference will be used to show off the upcoming version of eBay’s smartphone app RedLaser, which currently lets people scan product barcodes and compare prices online and in local stores. RedLaser 3.0, which eBay spokesman Anuj Nayar said will be out by the end of the year, will add PayPal for purchasing items directly from the app. X.commerce will also likely announce a partnership with Facebook. Snail’s. Pace

Worth Mentioning Scientists have cracked the genetic code of the Black Death, one of history’s worst plagues, and found that its modern day bacterial descendants haven’t changed much. Luckily, we have. The evolution of society and medicine and our own bodies has far outpaced the evolution of that deadly bacterium, scientists said. The 14th century bug is nearly identical to the modern-day version of the same germ. There are only a few dozen changes among the more than 4 million building blocks of DNA, according to the journal Nature. What that shows is that the plague was deadly for reasons beyond its DNA, authors said. In its day, the disease killed between 30 million and 50 million people — about one of every three Europeans. It came at the worst possible time — when the climate was suddenly getting colder, the world was in the midst of a long war and horrible famine, and people were moving into closer quarters, scientists say. And it was likely the first time the disease had struck humans, attacking people without any innate protection.

It says something about my lack of recent globetrotting that I’m really looking forward to discovering some JOHN MAZEROLLE strange bathrooms. In my 20s I had extended stays in Austria, Zimbabwe and New Zealand, and I’ve been home so long that I actually miss feeling uncomfortable. WEIRD NEWS

It’s like a deer in headlines For the past week, a massive, shorttempered stag has been charging into British headlines, goring a man in the middle of a picnic and chasing one woman through the brush. The stag’s rampage has cast a shadow over Bushy Park, a quiet suburban expanse of tree-lined avenues and ponds some 21 kilometres southwest of central London. “I’ve been in and out of the park for 20 years, and this is the first time I’ve heard of people being attacked in such

quick succession,” said Robert Piper, a sports and wildlife photographer whose dramatic shots of the angry deer have kept it in the headlines. Bushy Park holds 320 deer, which roam freely across a 445-hectare area of meadows and forested areas. They are generally gentle creatures — until fall’s rutting season. Park veteran Dick Hill, a 64-year-old retiree with binoculars dangling from his neck, says, “There have been quite a few of (the incidents) this year.” Hill said a shortage of female deer could be to blame for the aggressive behaviour. London’s feisty press have traced the path of the stag’s rampage under articles bearing names such as “Stag Fright.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Bad boy Gigandet Twilight and Trespass star Cam Gigandet delights in playing the villain because he doesn’t know how to play by the rules Mr. Nice Guy he’s not. If anything, 29-year-old actor Cam Gigandet has cultivated quite a reputation for playing bad guys, and he prefers it that way. The star of Twilight and Priest makes his next appearance with Trespass, a home-invasion thriller that pits his character and two other accomplices against a rich couple (played by Nicole Kidman and Nicholas Cage) whose house they hope to rob for millions. Gigandet explained why playing the bad guy is so satisfying for him. In this film, as in many others, you end up playing the bad guy. Why do you always get these parts?

I enjoy it the most. I think there just seems to be more to grab onto, I guess. You can use your imagination a little bit more — whereas if they’re a good guy or heroes, they have to abide by a strict set of rules and to this day I haven’t been able to figure out how to work around those. Maybe just because I don’t know how to do it. There seems to be more creativity and imagination involved in justifying what they do. And yeah, that’s what people hire me for, so I’ll take what I can get. What are the key differences from playing, say, an evil vampire in Twilight and a desperate robber in Trespass?

I prefer Trespass and I had a good time on Twilight. We were all so new and young to the experience. Even our director at the time [Catherine Hard-

wicke] was new to directing, so it was a little haphazard how we shot. And having 12 young actors, trying to corral everyone (was tough). A lot of the time was spent doing that, whereas on Trespass, before we even started shooting, there were two or three weeks where we literally rehearsed every single day. To be able to do that is any actor’s dream. While rehearsing, did anyone have their own stories about having their house robbed?

Everyone would share their stories, just while we were rehearsing, and when you talk to everyone, surprisingly a lot of people have had this happen. Even — not that this is a normal one — but I think Nicolas Cage had someone end up in his bedroom when he was sleeping and they were naked or had a popsicle. I haven’t gotten to that place yet, but I think I’m protected enough with my mace and baseball bat.

In Trespass, Cam Gigandet plays a robber who hopes to cash in on the riches of a wealthy couple, played by Nicole Kidman and Nicolas Cage.

Is your co-star Nicolas Cage as crazy as everyone says he is?

Yes and yes. I’ll be honest. I was warned before working with him by a few people that he’s very difficult and crazy and this and that and he is crazy but in such a good way. I don’t know if it’s crazy so much as quirkiness. He’s just out there and outgoing and funnier than I could’ve imagined. I think he’s a little misunderstood. He definitely has a good sense of humour — an odd one, but a good one. METRO

Nicolas Cage is disappointed that his new film, Trespass, is being released for home viewing at the same time it hits theatres.

Cage laments lack of screen time Nicolas Cage may be happy he got to work with Nicole Kidman and reunite with director Joel Schumacher on his new thriller Trespass. Yet Cage isn’t thrilled that viewers will be able to watch the movie at home the same day it opens in a handful of theatres. The story of a family terrorized by home intruders, Trespass debuts Friday for a limited theatrical run in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and seven other major markets. It will be available at the same time for home viewing through video on demand. The DVD and Blu-ray release follow barely two weeks later on Nov. 1, compared with a typical window of about four months between the time most Hollywood films open in theatres and debut on home video. It’s a business decision that will help Trespass distributor Millennium Entertainment, an independent outfit that does not have the big marketing bucks of a Hollywood studio, make the most of its advertising dollars. Cage understands that, but he wishes the movie could have a separate life on the big-screen before it goes to smaller television and computer screens — or even tiny cellphone screens. “I like movies to be seen the way the director wanted them to be seen, which is on the big-screen, with an audience, with their popcorn,” Cage said in an interview alongside Schumacher at September’s Toronto International Film Festival, where Trespass premiered. Smaller distributors such as Magnolia Pictures and IFC Films often release films to theatres and video on demand around the same time. With Academy Award winners Cage and Kidman, along with director Schumacher (Batman Forever, A Time to Kill), Trespass arguably is the biggest test yet for simultaneous big-screen and home releases. ‘A film about a cult’ Martha Marcy May Marlene delves into the world of manipulation GETTY IMAGES

NED EHRBAR

SCENE@METRONEWS.CA

METRO WORLD NEWS IN HOLLYWOOD

Writer-director Sean Durkin’s first feature film, Martha Marcy May Marlene, deals with the trauma of life inside and after escaping a cult — though that word is never used in the film. In fact, the film’s protagonist, Elizabeth Olson — turning in a striking, heartbreaking performance — doesn’t use very many words at all, which makes understanding why she’s so troubled that much harder for her sister (Sarah Paulson) and brother-in-law (Hugh Dancy). Told in a fractured chronology that highlights Martha’s growing paranoia, the film is both beautiful and unsettling. But more unsettling for Durkin was how easy it was to find former cult members to discuss their experiences while researching the project. Where did the idea for this movie start?

It started with just a very simple desire to maybe make a film about a cult. I felt like I hadn’t seen anything that was modern and naturalistic. I wanted to do something that showed a little bit more of the subtle manipulation. I started writing and I just started talking about it, and when you start talking about it, people are always like, “Oh my friend grew up in one.

Canada's ultimate haunted houses

The title is a mouthful until you see the movie, and then it just rolls off the tongue.

The word “cult” never comes up in the movie.

October

Yeah, that seems to be a common response. I never wanted to call it anything else. I usually struggle with names of things that I do, but I came up with that the day I came up with the plot. And the name just popped into my head. I thought of Martha, and then Marcy May Marlene just flowed out after and that was it. At Sundance, the first couple big reviews to come out mentioned that once you see it, it’s easier — which was great to hear because it’s obviously a concern.

We never used the word “cult” until after the movie was finished and we had to start talking about it, because there’s no other word to use. But we never talked about it while we were there, when we were shooting. With the actors, we never discussed it like that. “Cult” has got a lot of connotations that aren’t helpful when you’re making a movie about someone being manipulated into cer-

Captain Kirk is covering tunes HANDOUT

Shatner says he ‘was on dangerous ground’ with his new spoken-word album Seeking Major Tom William Shatner has boldly ventured into a new space-themed project: a spoken-word, cover-tune album that the former Star Trek captain felt was a risk when he recorded it. “It’s such a departure and it’s such a reinterpretation of some classics that I knew that I was on dangerous ground,” Shatner, 80, said during a recent telephone interview to promote Seeking Major Tom. “For the longest time I didn’t know whether it was going to be accepted or not. It seems to be taking (off ).” Out this week as a twodisc CD version as well as a three-disc vinyl edition, Seeking Major Tom fea-

tures Shatner’s trademark speak-sing interpretations of classic rock favourites and other space-themed songs. The first tune, Major Tom (Coming Home), begins with a blast: the sound of spacecraft lift-off followed by pulsating ’80s synth sounds and Shatner’s deadpan-to-dramatic delivery of the lyrics. Other songs include

Rocket Man, She Blinded Me With Science, Walking On The Moon, Bohemian Rhapsody and Iron Man. Shatner said Cleopatra Records in Los Angeles approached him about a year ago to do recitations on an album. It wasn’t a stretch: after all, Shatner had already done this type of thing before, first with his much-lampooned 1968 album The Transformed Man, and then with 2004’s Has Been. “I ultimately presented them with this and they were a little hesitant at first and then they got behind it,” said the Montrealborn star, who’s won two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe.

Woman claims she spent the night in a hot tub with Ashton Kutcher Says pillow talk turned political PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES

Sara Leal, the San Diego woman who claims she was with Ashton Kutcher on the night of his sixth wedding anniversary, is breaking her silence. “He just came up and kissed me,” Leal tells Us Weekly of her introduction to Kutcher, who she claims had told her he was separated from Demi Moore. Leal details a late night cavorting naked in a hot tub with Kutcher and one other woman before the pair retired to Kutcher’s bedroom. “He lost his towel and I took my robe off,” Leal says. “Then we had sex.” And apparently Kutcher’s pillow talk got political, as Leal says he quizzed her on “up-and-coming candidates,” she remembers. “I said Rick Perry. He asked if I’d vote for him. I said I didn’t know and he laughed.” METRO

Sweet and pretty Just when you were beginning to get used to the idea of fall’s kinky fetish wear, the fashion pendulum swung the completely opposite way for spring. Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Valentino and Givenchy are just a few houses that turned out the kinds of feminine, universally appealing dresses that both your mother and homegirl would approve of. Think: shimmery, ethereal dresses that resembled oyster shells and lace frocks the colour of lemon drops.

Chung is an English rose with a few thorns Fashion multi-hyphenate Alexa Chung chats about trend-busting, the influence of boys and the ever-changing meaning of the ‘it-girl’ mixed and tamed. In England, people indulge in this madness. In the States, people would be like, ‘Oh my gosh, what is she wearing!’

ROMINA MCGUINNESS

LIFE@METRONEWS.CA

Alexa Chung is someone who has become famous for how she looks more so than her day job as a television personality. She’s got a unique thing going — a tomboyish schoolgirl pluckiness that miraculously manages to look chic and modern, rather than childlike. Not every woman can pull off a Peter Pan collar, knee socks and loafers, but that won’t stop hundreds of thousands from trying. The 28-year-old gives Kate Moss a run for her money as the British export women most want to dress like. How do you feel about the ‘It-girl’ label?

At the beginning I was uncomfortable with it. I guess it’s my British way of being wary of celebration as it ultimately precedes a fall. Before, the it-girl scene meant people like Paris Hilton. But not anymore. Now, it’s a different vibe. People like Diane Kruger, Elle Fanning and myself. I like to think we wear clothes in an interesting way, and not necessarily have the emphasis on sex. It’s pretty cool. People are always dissecting your style in magazines and on blogs. But how would you describe it?

I appreciate classic design, it’s classic for a reason — a shirt and blazer is practical, comfortable and never looks dated. Carven is a brand that very much does what I love, a

mix of strict mistress and schoolgirl. It’s not overtly sexy and when you wear it you feel attractive. I’m more inspired by what men wear, people like Keith Richards, Bryan Jones and the Beatles. If I wear a girlie party dress, I prefer wearing it with a briefcase and brogues, though I’m a bit bored of that right now. I sometimes wish I’d been a boy. The more I think about it, the more I think my tomboy side is what I use to assert the fact that I’m not a push over. How much time do you spend thinking about what to wear

each day?

The key is I don’t spend time getting ready in the morning but I do put a lot of thought into the things I buy. If you know what your style really is, it doesn’t matter how you assemble things, you can just mix and match and it will always look nice.

Before I was on TV I went to art school and if I hadn’t become a TV presenter I would have done design of some sort. It’s more my scene and what I’m most comfortable doing. TV is not something I’m naturally good at whereas when I’m sitting sketching in the Madewell office, it feels natural and easy. In the U.K. everyone is saying, ‘Alexa is concentrating on her TV career’ but it’s not that. I need the money. I’m like everyone else, TV is my job.

Enter with a bang! THE KIT BY CHANTEL SIMMONS

Get the best bangs for your buck with these expert tips from Kit Expert Greg May, owner of Greg May Hair Architects. I really want bangs, but my stylist says they won’t look good on me because I have a low forehead and cowlick. Any tips for getting the right bangs that I’ll love forever — or at least for fall?

Never say never (like Bieber)! Some bangs — I call it a fringe — look better on certain face shapes and hair lines. If you have a lower forehead, a fringe isn’t your best look, because it can cut your face

and can be hard to work with, since you don’t have enough space to get the brush under the hair. Cowlicks and widow’s peaks can also be challenging, but it’s always possible to achieve a modified fringe. Once you’ve made the cut, make your priority after getting out of the shower drying your fringe before doing anything else (the rest of your hair, makeup, etc.). Brush hair one way and then the other, which can help loosen the cowlick and make

ast Tuesday, 25,000 building industry professionals with a penchant for green innovation descended upon the city of Toronto for Greenbuild, the U.S. Green Building Council’s annual conference. It was the first time the Council had taken its annual conference outside of the U.S. and more than 108 countries sent delegates. By way of welcoming them, the Canada Green Building Council set up Canada House at Steam Whistle Brewery to showcase home grown green talent and technology. BILD was the Canada House launch sponsor and donning a red and white Canada scarf (on a 22-de-

gree-weather day, no less) I was honoured to welcome everyone to the conference and to our great city. In addition to the economic boost the conference gave to our hospitality industry, the conference was a great opportunity for the global building industry to learn from each other. From a local perspective, I took part in numerous roundtable discussions with U.S. and global ambassadors and explained how the Ontario Building Code and Green Energy Act is leading edge. With my BILD hat on, I was also able to shine the light on the GTA home building industry’s enviable track record as world leaders in energy-efficient construction. During a two-day trade show at Canada House, BILD had a booth with the Sustainable Housing Foundation and launched a U.S. Cross Border Builder Challenge. We featured participat-

ing GTA builder projects that are 30 per cent more energy efficient than current Canadian building standards in a slideshow and we challenged U.S. home builders to build 50 per cent more energy efficient than the American standard. Some BILD members took part in the Greenbuild education sessions, the tours, and the trade shows so that information about green technology, products and services could be brought back to their local companies. I’m sure you will start to see evidence of that information sharing in the new homes built around the GTA and in the renovations and retrofits of existing homes in the coming years. PAUL GOLINI JR. Sick of saving for that massive down payment? You may be able to purchase a condo sooner than you think DUNCAN MCALLISTER

LIFE@METRONEWS.CA

Wouldn’t you love to buy your dream condo right now? Many families may be put off by high condo costs or not able to raise the down payment. A new trend in Toronto home purchasing is rentto-own financing. How it works is, you choose a unit and pay monthly rental payments. A certain amount of those payments are put toward your down payment on a mortgage. Several third-party companies now offer rent-toown with various financing arrangements. One condo developer that has had success offering rent-to-own directly to their purchasers is The Daniels Corporation. Daniels is offering a bold new direction in home ownership with their NY Place boutique condos at Bayview and Sheppard. Daniels VP Martin Blake says, “Certainly this is our second rental project and both have been tremendously successful for us. We had so many people

register with us who are interested and it’s one of those types of projects where the people who register with you the first time may not actually be ready right now, but they’re close to being ready for the next project, so we see this as kind of a way for consumers to become aware of an option and for us to be able to deliver on that.” Blake explains how the program works. “You come into the office and you choose the suite that you’re interested in and as soon as you’ve chosen the suite, we can work out what the financing is. Then you meet with the bank and the bank gets you preapproved for a mortgage on that unit and the rents are set up so that you’re paying the equivalent of a mortgage right from day one.” Daniel’s system allows the purchaser to accumulate half of their down payment in the first year. “You’re signing an agreement of purchase and sale at the same time,” says Blake. “And in that first year, what’s happening is your

12 monthly payments that you’re making, a portion is going to the deposit of the purchase of the unit and that makes up approximately 50 per cent of your down payment. So by the end of your first year, 50 per cent has come from you paying rent on a monthly basis,

and then at the end of that year you close and you become a homeowner.” The program has proven to be very popular for Daniels. “In one week alone we had four or five information sessions with about 90 people per session,” says Blake.

With more forethought, Adam might not have bitten the apple and I might not have planted apple trees. But he did, and I did, and we each must deal with the consequences. For my part, I hadn’t realized that apple trees had so many pest and disease problems until I planted 25 dwarfs. Sure, those problems can be fought with repeated sprays of pesticides. But with a little research and planning, an acceptable crop of high quality apples can be harvested using little or no pesticide.

Insect thugs The three major insect pests for apples are the apple maggot, plum curculio and codling moth. Apple maggots are the worst of the lot, dimpling fruits and riddling them with brown trails of burrowing larvae. Given free rein, they make almost every fruit too damaged to eat. Thankfully, the apple maggot has an Achilles heel. When this insect emerges as a fly about six weeks after the trees have bloomed, the females search around for the biggest, reddest apples in-

which to lay eggs. Ms. Maggot can be hoodwinked with fake apples: red spheres coated with a sticky material called Tangletrap. Or with sacrificial real apples: Buy the firmest, reddest Red Delicious you can find, force a stiff wire through the core to hang the apple, and coat the fruit with Tangletrap. (Traps of real apples eventually rot, so usually need to be replaced once or twice a season.) One trap per dwarf tree, hung at head height in clear view, or four traps per full-size apple tree, should provide an irresistible enticement to the egg-laying apple maggot. Plum curculio, which is active during the six weeks immediately following bloom, can cause fruit to drop early. The traditional way to thwart it, effective if done diligently, is to spread an old sheet or dropcloth beneath each tree each morning, then give the tree or branches a sharp whack with a padded mallet. Curculios drop from the tree and play dead, at which point they can be gathered up and destroyed. Letting chickens forage beneath apple trees also offers some control. Spraying is another way to control curculio, but instead of the usual chemical

pesticide sprays, use a spray derived from nothing more than kaolin clay. The material, marketed under the name Surround, leaves a white coating on the fruit. Build up a good, powdery base with three sprays just before trees bloom, then spray every seven to 10 days, or after heavy rains. The clay spray also thwarts codling moth, with its signature big, fat worm. This pest is active for much of the season, but even unchecked, affects only 25 per cent of fruits. Disease The three worst diseases afflicting apple trees are fire blight, cedar-apple rust and scab. Certain pesticides control cedar apple rust, but spraying must begin before blossoms open. Although apple insects have cosmopolitan tastes, disease organisms are finicky. Another way to control diseases is to plant a disease-resistant variety. LEE REICH/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Hello! I have a down-filled comforter that clearly states “Dry Clean Only”. Is there any way I can avoid the dry cleaners to have this cleaned and do it myself? Signed, Laundry Lady

NO MONEY DOWN, NO INTEREST FOR UP TO 3 YEARS**

Dear Laundry Lady, The good news is that

yes, you can wash a downfilled duvet. However, there are some very specific steps that you must follow to ensure success. 1. Only ever wash it in a front loading washing machine; never a top loader as the agitator in a top loading washer will damage the down duvet. 2. Use 1⁄4 the amount of soap, because soap is very difficult to remove from this kind of garment. You can always wash a second time and add more soap if needed. 3. When you put the duvet in the dryer you will need some tennis balls in a sock — these will bounce around to help break up

the feather clumps within the duvet 4. Do not use the auto dry feature on the dryer, instead use the timer and leave the duvet in for a long time, as the feathers take time to dry. You may think the duvet is dry to the touch but remember the feathers! I have left my duvet in the dryer for easily an hour and sometimes even an hour and a half. There is nothing nicer than clean laundered items, and a duvet is something, with the right equipment and soap, you can easily do yourself. GOT A QUESTION? Q. My mother is 87 years old and owns a house valued at $450,000 to $500,000. My brother is currently living with her in order to help her out with day-to-day living. There are five siblings in total. My mother’s will specifies that her assets are to be divided equally amongst her children. We had considered transferring ownership to our brother but are worried about

estate taxes and the ownership of the house after our mother passes away. Can you give us some guidance?

A: One of the most common methods of estate planning is to place one of the children of an elderly parent on joint ownership of the home. In this case, your brother presumably does not own another residence and therefore there are no capital gains issues as he can declare it his principal residence. As a joint owner, the property will automatically change ownership to that of your brother upon the death of your mother and will not become an estate asset. This should save ap-

proximately $7,000 in estate administration taxes. The only real issue is your brother’s honesty and how he approaches his ownership after your mother’s death. If he has no issue selling up and splitting the proceeds then it may be a possible estate planning strategy. However, if this potential situation may lead to family problems and strife, you may want to consider this transfer to your brother very carefully. There is nothing worse than a family torn apart by a battle over a late parent’s estate. JEFFREY COWAN IS THE PRINCIPAL OF COWAN LAW AND CAN BE REACHED BY EMAIL AT JEFF@COWANLAW.CA.

Fairy gardens — hidden beneath stout trees at botanical gardens, or proudly displayed on tabletops at garden centres and in homes — are captivating the imaginations of children and adults, providing an escape into a tiny world. Young kids get caught up in the magic, industriously building homes for the fairies they believe are real. Older children enjoy working on the tiny scale: five-centimetre plants and diminutive garden furniture. Adults enjoy the creativity, too. “You see how real it is for the children,” says Donni Webber of Long Beach, Calif., who blogs about fairy gardens. “For the parent, it becomes real, too. It takes us all back into that magical time when it was all for real.” A fairy garden can be made in most anything — an oak barrel, terra-cotta pot, even old luggage and basins. They also can be planted straight in the garden, on a patch of soil or a tree stump, or hidden beneath a bush. Meg Holloway, of Overland Park, Kan., builds fairy gardens with her eightyear-old daughter, Miranda. Besides creating and maintaining the gardens, the two enjoy hunting for tiny accessories at garage sales and thrift stores. “It is very special Mommy time,” Holloway says. “I really love that.” She and Miranda often hide their fairy gardens outside for others to find. “Little kids always notice,” says Holloway. “Adults always walk on by.” The hide-and-seek appeal of fairy gardens has led some public gardens to encourage visitors to build fairy houses in out-of-theway spots. The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, Maine, for instance, provides two building sites — along the shore

A fairy garden yurt made from bark and feathers at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, Maine.

and in the woods. “What you notice a lot is the dads really get into it,” says acting executive director William Cullina. “They like the construction, building things.” So many fairy structures are built that garden employees periodically go through and knock some down, Cullina said, returning the materials — such as sticks, pine cones and rocks — to the “Gnome Depot.” “It gets kind of like suburbia after awhile,” says Cullina. “It sprawls — we get ‘fairy sprawl.’” Heather Fogg of Peoria, Ill., builds fairy gardens out of found objects, such as chipped metal basins and old dresser drawers, and uploads pictures of some of her finished gardens on Flickr.

“It’s very much like dollhouses for adults. It’s a way to create a mini world, have a visual escape from the day-to-day norm.” KRYSTAL KEISTLER-HAWLEY, AREA MANAGER FOR ECHTER’S GREENHOUSE & GARDENS

She scatters her minigardens among her outdoor gardens, “hidden like I imagine fairies would accidentally be found.” For children, making the furniture and accoutrements out of found objects is half the fun. But some adults prefer to buy their accessories, which they can do online and at garden centres and specialty shops. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Shedding a little light POTTERY BARN.

Lighting basics for the key rooms in your home

KARL LOHNES HOME@ METRONEWS.CA

As daylight gets shorter and shorter, I notice that the first thing I do when I come home is go around turning on all the lights. Good lighting not only helps brighten up a space, but also highlights the special features of each room. Every room needs three types of lighting: overall, task and ambient. Here’s a room-by-room checklist of the lighting needed to keep things looking bright for

Adding plug-in timers on a variety of lamps around your home will not only keep minimal illumination, but will add a sense of security to your place.

Living room: The right types

Wattage amounts: overhead 60-100 watts, task lighting 40-60 watts, ambient less than 25 watts.

of light can make a room either relax or come to life with energy. I like to fill dark corners in this room with recess lighting that is discretely hidden in the ceiling. You can also use upright-style floor lamp or small lights that shoot light upwards. The task lighting in a living room is primarily for reading. A small-scale elbowed metal floor lamp is perfect for directing light where you need it. Keep these sorts of floor lamps on each side of a sofa and beside your favourite reading chair. Ambient lighting adds sparkle to a room and helps to balance other strong

ing is good to have on hand, but a dimmer switch will definitely be your best friend when planning lighting in this room. The chandelier will be your main source of light. Make sure that the wattages of chandelier bulbs add up to at least 60 to 80 watts to help create a strong illumination. The bottom of a chandelier should hang 32 to 40 inches above the table. Other ambient lighting could be wall sconces or picture lights that help wash a subtle light over the side walls in the room. Finally, the ultimate ambient light will be candles.

Why air your dirty laundry? Get your clothes off the floor once and for all

Laundry hampers can be decorative, useful and fun IKEA/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

When we were young, “laundry hamper” might have referred to the floor under the bed. A little later, it may have meant a mesh sack kept by the front door, with a pouch full of quarters for the laundromat. But we are grown-ups now. An attractive receptacle for the day’s castoffs is one of the small civilized gifts we give ourselves. It’s generally a modest investment that banishes the chaos, and brings in the calm that is the hallmark of a well-kept home. For contemporary bath or bedroom suites, consider Bed, Bath & Beyond’s sophisticated black faux leather hamper with removable basket, or West Elm’s sleek white lacquered cylindrical hamper.

(bedbathandbeyond.com, $79.99; westelm.com, $99) Hampton Bay has a beautiful tilt-door double hamper that’s really a piece of furniture; it would work as a vanity as well, and comes in white or hazel wood finish. (homedecorators.com, $209) A nice willow hamper from Seville has a hinged lid, and comes in white or natural. (bedbathandbeyond.com, $39.99) Seville also makes a professional-looking three-bag rack on a sturdy metal frame, complete with telescoping hanging rack and locking wheels. Hammering out your plans Taking the next step to improve your home or condominium

Tackle design process first, expert says GEORGE DOYLE/STOCKBYTE/THINKSTOCK

JON TATTRIE

Checklist

FOR METRO

Metro’s homebuyers Joe Stanton and Liam and Madeleine Rushton have both purchased a new home. Now they are talking about renovations and trying to determine how to go about getting them done. When Stanton, a 42year-old banking executive, closed the deal on a downtown condo, he knew the first thing he would do when he took possession was upgrade the bathroom. The Rushtons, who just found out they are expecting twins, are keen to have a family room in their new home in the suburbs. They definitely have the space to add a room … now all they need is the knowhow. Moe Abbas, owner of Ottawa General Contractors, says the first step in any renovation is the design process itself. You need to spell out exactly what you want to do in order to get a good quote for any project. “The best is to go with a design and build company,” he says. “Then I would call a few contractors to get a rough idea of how

Check with your municipal planning authority to see if you need an engineer’s stamp, a land survey or a grading plan for your project. Consult zoning rules and bylaws to see if your project is permitted. Check your contractor, too, recommends home renovators Mr. Build in Vancouver. Contact past clients (the contractor should provide references) and visit a work-in-progress — don’t trust finished gems with no owners present. Go online to see if the company is listed on the provincial registration of businesses and check them out with the Better Business Bureau of Canada.

much it would cost.” The Rushtons’ project will cost about $100,000 while Stanton’s bathroom will run $10,000. The Rushtons hire an architect for detailed plans of their sunroom. Stanton plans out his bathroom himself, using his own ideas and gathering information from bathroom retailers and

renovation sources including books, magazines and websites. For the Rushtons, “It’s a very detailed process. It’ll be about five to six months to see a shovel hit the ground,” Abbas says. Abbas recommends padding the quoted price by five to 10 per cent. Part is for the normal overrun of a project, but also be-

cause the Rushtons and Stanton will likely change plans. “People always want to add things while they’re renovating — you might as well do the siding, you might as well change the windows — you see what I mean,” he says. “It’s very rare that an addition comes in at the price it was quoted at.”

Four months later — 10 months after they started — the Rushtons wave goodbye to the last contractor and spend their first Saturday in the new sunroom. Stanton has an easier path to his swank washroom. He has to tick off the same boxes — cost estimate, design and permission — but everything is

much quicker. The design only takes two hours, as does the estimate. Many people skip getting a building permit for interior renovations, but Stanton plays by the rules and gets the paperwork. The work itself takes three days. A month after he first decided to renovate his bathroom, Stanton slips into his claw-foot tub.

Texas tightens its grip Rangers improve to 3-1 in AL championship series as Cruz hits another big home run HARRY HOW/GETTY IMAGES

RANGERS

TIGERS

The Texas tag team of Nelson Cruz and Mike Napoli was too much for the Detroit Tigers. Cruz made a rocket throw to keep the score tied, then hit a crushing three-run homer in the 11th inning off Jose Valverde that helped send the Rangers over the Tigers 7-3 last night for a 3-1 lead in the AL championship series. Napoli had put Texas ahead with an RBI single earlier in the 11th. Cruz, whose grand slam in the 11th inning won Game 2, once again starred for the Rangers in a game delayed at the start for more than two hours by rain. With Detroit runners at the corners in the eighth and the score tied at 3, Cruz caught Delmon Young’s flyball to right field and made a strong peg to Napoli, the catcher, to nail Miguel Cabrera. “For you guys that haven’t seen Nelson every day, he’s capable of doing exactly what he’s doing,” Texas manager Ron Washington said. “We’ve been

waiting for it for a long time, and as I always say, I don’t judge Nelson just because he hits balls out of the ballpark. He’s a complete player. He takes pride in every part of the game.” Napoli blooped a goahead single in the 11th and Cruz soon added his fourth home run of the ALCS. Cruz became the first player in major league history to hit a pair of extra-inning homers in the same post-season series. Texas tries for its second

consecutive AL pennant today, sending C.J. Wilson to the mound to face Detroit ace Justin Verlander. The ALCS has marked quite a turnaround for Cruz. After going just 1 for 15 in the first-round playoff win over Tampa Bay, he’s 5 for 14 with nine RBIs in only four games against the Tigers — and seven of those RBIs have come in the 11th inning alone. Brandon Inge hit a solo home run in the Detroit seventh that tied it. The

Tigers wasted a terrific chance an inning later following some risky Texas strategy. With one out and nobody on, the Rangers intentionally walked Cabrera, practically daring the rest of the struggling Detroit lineup to beat them. The AL batting champion had hit a two-run double earlier in the game, in fact. “First time shame on you, next time shame on me,” Washington said. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

In the NL Albert Pujols hit an RBI double during a four-run first inning and the St. Louis bullpen bailed out Chris Carpenter as the Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 for a 2-1 edge in the NL championship series. Kyle Lohse starts Game 4 today for the wild-card Cardinals against Randy Wolf and the Brewers.

“The numbers are close enough that that wasn’t going to doom the season. The hard salary cap is what’s going to doom the season right now.” JEFFREY KESSLER, A LAWYER FOR THE NBA PLAYERS, ON WHAT’S PREVENTING THE UNION AND THE LEAGUE FROM REACHING AN AGREEMENT.

Red Sox GM Epstein joins Cubs: Reports 37-year-old reportedly agrees to five-year deal Boston won two World Series with Epstein at helm WINSLOW TOWNSON/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE

Boston Red Sox executive Theo Epstein has agreed to a five-year contract with the Chicago Cubs, according to multiple media reports. The 37-year-old Epstein would leave the Red Sox with a year remaining on his contract as general manager and take over what is expected to be an expanded role with the Cubs, who have gone 103 years without a World Series championship. Radio station WEEI in Boston, ESPN the Magazine and SI.com all cited unidentified sources in reporting that Epstein has agreed to a deal. Details, which could include compensation to the Red Sox,

Theo Epstein

were still being worked out. The Cubs declined comment yesterday and Red Sox officials could not be reached by The Associated Press.

On Tuesday, a person familiar with the situation told the AP that Epstein was likely to join the Cubs within 48 hours. With Epstein at the helm, the Red Sox ended an 86-year World Series championship drought in 2004 and won the title again in 2007. Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts fired GM Jim Hendry in August and finished 71-91. They have been pursuing Epstein, who just finished his ninth season with Boston.
