Closing arguments in murder trial Prosecutors claim a triple murder at Calgary’s Bolsa Restaurant was an act of revenge, but defence lawyers say some doubt remains about who committed the killings. Those were the themes presented during closing arguments in a Calgary courtroom Thursday as the first-degree murder trial for Nathan Zuccherato and Michael Roberto winds to a close. Both men are charged in the shooting deaths of known gang member Sanjeev Mann, his associate Aaron Bendle and innocent bystander Keni Su’a at Bolsa on New Year’s Day 2009. METRO

Calgary police on patrol admit a city-approved “safe camp” for demonstrators has created a grey area when it comes to enforcement. Tensions rose Thursday between residents of the Occupy Calgary camp on St. Patrick’s Island and police after the group attempted to evict a pair they claimed were being unruly and in possession of drugs. Witnesses at the camp alleged one individual attempted to throw another over a pedestrian bridge Wednesday. That night, camp manager Paul Hughes said a general assembly was held and residents decided the pair should leave. That, according to Const. Scott Kerr-Smith, is above the group’s authority. “No member of the public, these people or otherwise, have a right to circumnavigate public access,” he said. Hughes received proper permission to open the camp for three weeks earlier this month. He has been constantly updating a representative from the Calgary Emergency Management Agency on developments there.

“We are a microcommunity, and we make decisions within the safe zone,” Hughes said. “We have to police ourselves as part of the deal.... It’s the baby steps of building a community.” Kerr-Smith said the camp’s authorization has created a difficult situation in an area where such activity is typically forbidden. “It clearly causes confu-
sion for some people,” he said. Area Ald. Gian-Carlo Carra deemed the camp an “interesting experiment” and said he plans to continue following developments closely. “This is really part of an international movement.... It certainly raises a lot of questions,” he said. More coverage {page 18}
At the camp Calgary police spokesperson Kevin Brookwell said some alcohol has been seized from the Occupy Calgary site. A few dozen people were reported to be living in the camp Thursday. Bylaw officers have brought in basic amenities, like portable toilets and a fire pit.

Don’t be “that guy. The one who takes advantage of an intoxicated woman and sexually assaults her. YOUR TWEETS “A MAYOR WHO DOES WHAT HE PROMISED” We asked readers: What’s @nenshi most memorable moment, good or bad, in his first year as Calgary’s mayor? Here’s what you had to say:

We don't need it @buzzbishop: a mayor that does (or tries to do) what he promised. a mayor that is engaged with and responsive to citizens. @kalireadwin: All of the recent moments I could talk about politics and @nenshi with pride. Opened up a lot of conversations!
QUOTABLE QUOTES Oct. 19, 2010 Nenshi speaking to Metro the day after his election: “I’m grateful that Calgarians have found something in my vision that they are excited about and I’m excited about it too.”
Dec. 14, 2010 Nenshi speaking to city employees at city hall: “It’s a cultural shift and it’s going to be a difficult cultural shift. It’s not going to happen tomorrow.”
Dec. 18, 2010 Nenshi on his decision to run for mayor of Calgary: “We had a meeting over pizza on Tuesday night and we decided to run, and we said there’s no time to waste so we launched it on Thursday morning.… Done.”
One year after stepping into office, Naheed Nenshi seems to have settled into the mayor’s chair. While there have been some strokes placed in both the win and loss column, Nenshi said overall he has accomplished slightly more than he anticipated in his first 365 days leading Calgary. “I think we’ve been able to change the attitude around city hall into something that’s much more collaborative, that’s much more citizenfocused,” he said. “But it’s not just sunshine and rainbows — we’ve actually got a lot of work done.” From getting rid of the $3 park-and-ride fee to financing the contentious airport tunnel, Nenshi said the city has taken big strides over the year. But there’s still plenty on the table for the remaining two-thirds of his term, including the continuous push to legalize secondary suites — Better Idea No. 1 from Nenshi’s campaign. As for looking ahead to re-election in 2013, Nenshi

said he’s still uncertain. “We’ve got a pretty aggressive agenda for the next couple years, we’ll have to see how well we do on implementing it and if people are still happy,” said Nenshi. “Probably a year from now I’ll make a decision about my own future.”
His to-do list Nenshi said his office is currently working on a couple of secondary-suite proposals to present to council. Also on his to-do list is a full review and overall plan for Calgary Transit, accord-
ing to Nenshi. The mayor said there are also moves afoot to change the planning and permitting process at city hall, “which will significantly change how citizens can get involved in the urban fabric of the city.”

Rethink non-disclosure charges: AIDS group Charges being laid against HIV-positive individuals who fail to inform partners of their illness are too harsh, says a local group. Calgarian Xavier Robert Bissonnette was sent to jail earlier this month after pleading guilty to three counts of aggravated sexual assault. Knowingly living with HIV, Bissonnette was initially charged after having sex with a 17-year-old girl, but two more adult victims came forward after the fact. Excluding his crime against the minor, AIDS Calgary executive director Simonne LeBlanc said laying aggravated sexual assault charges against individuals in these circumstances is sending the wrong message.
Xavier Robert 6 Bissonnette was sent to prison for six years after having sex with three women — including a minor — without disclosing that he was HIV-positive. “It actually discourages people from getting tested,” she said. “ LeBlanc pointed to improved anti-retroviral drugs and science surrounding the disease as further validation of her belief — one she said is shared by nearly all AIDSawareness groups. But Det. Donna Daniels with the Calgary police sex crimes unit said even a remote chance of infecting someone else warrants a criminal charge. JEREMY NOLAIS
Tara Oates, owner of Bowness Pub, has spent the last 10 months trying to turn her bar into a community pub.

The new slogan says it all: “Calgary’s Friendliest Neighbourhood Pub.” Tara Oates, owner of the Bowness Pub, said that’s her goal: To transform a formerly seedy bar to a place the community can converge. After moving to Bowness two years ago, Oates said she fell in love with the area. Oates had worked in the service industry for years and said it was always a dream of hers to own a bar, so when the Pig and Pint went up for sale, she jumped at the chance. “Because I loved it so much, I decided to take it on and I knew it was going to be a challenge,” she said. Over the past few months, Oates has not only made changes to the physical appearance but has worked with police to ensure fights, loitering and any other unwelcome be-

foodie, I spend most of my time questioning what exactly it is that I’m eating and most importantly, how to pronounce it. The other morning, in an effort to be more involved in the group, I proposed a modern-day breakfast club at one of this city’s most popular diners. I recommended the legendary Blackfoot Diner and was greeted with a muffled cheer — but mostly sneers. I think some wondered why would we want to eat at an old diner when we could eat at a new restaurant with a fancy French name, or somewhere named after an obscure type of metal or collection of greenery. Having never eaten at the infamous
Blackfoot Diner, I was insistent that we at least try it. I mean, how can we talk about food in Calgary if we don’t ever try the institutions? As I hoped and suspected, the whole experience was wonderfully refreshing. I understood every word of the menu, the prices were shocking ... because I could afford them, and best of all, the service was exactly what we needed: Sincere, personal and attentive. No one was talking with phoney accents, pretending they were serving something fancier than bacon and eggs, and at the end of the day, it was just really, really good. With so many new restaurants in Calgary, I’ve admittedly gotten caught up in the excitement of trying ridiculously delicious (and expensive) food, even if, most of the time, I had no idea what I was eating. A few times, I even did research before going, just so I could order with confidence. I had somehow adopted
“No one was talking with phoney accents, pretending they were serving something fancier than bacon and eggs.” the same philosophy as those people who spend $400 on jeans — the more you spend on food, the better it must be, right? While I do think that sometimes it’s fun to spend money on a great meal, many of the tastiest meals I’ve had in Calgary have actually come from those socalled “dive” restaurants — the same ones that have withstood this economy’s many booms and busts. I appreciate the ability to eat at some of Canada’s best restaurants, right here in this city, but sometimes it really comes down to the amount of butter you put on my toast (lots), the crispiness of the bacon and how many times you willingly call me sweetie, sugar or darling.

@METRONEWS.CA
Mount Royal University political scientist Duane Bratt and Calgary political blogger Joey Oberhoffner grade Nenshi’s 12 Better Ideas in his 2010 bid for mayor. #12: Calgary will be a city with outstanding libraries, recreation amenities and a vibrant cultural scene. Bratt’s Grade: B “Will move
to an A if a new public library can be built.” Oberhoffner’s Grade: B
“Progress is being made on the recreation-amenities front, and funding models considered for the library projects.” #11: Every neighbourhood in Calgary will be safe. B: A “This already exists.
Co-operation between city hall, the police and the province has helped keep Calgary safe.”
O: B “Calgary looks even
better compared to its classmate from the north. I don’t know if every neighbourhood is safe yet, but they’re certainly closer to it than they were.” #10: Calgary will reduce the number of people in poverty, ensuring opportunity for all. B: C “No new initiatives on
homelessness or poverty. Defeat on secondary suites was a setback.” O: B+ “The city and province have done much to address the homelessness issue.... Cost of living in the city remains high and has to be addressed to earn an A.” #9: Calgarians will be able to get around easily by any mode of transportation. B: B “Lets wait until the
West LRT is completed. Right now, there is too much construction and not enough transit. Bike paths continue to be pursued.”
O: C “This is a multi-semester project, and the final grade might be much higher.” #8: Calgary city council will be more transparent, more efficient and easier for citizens to engage. B: A “Nenshi has taken a
number of steps through both old and new media to engage citizens. They may not like a particular decision but they have a better understanding of why that decision was made.” O: B+ “The perception of city council as being accessible ... has certainly improved. HIGH SCHOOL UPGRADING Jennifer loves being around people, but serving coffee 12 hours a day at minimum wage isn’t her idea of fun. Without a high school diploma, though, she knows that’s where she’ll be for a long time to come. Scary as it is, Jennifer knows it’s time to get more serious…

FallCon. The board game convention will feature plenty of non-mass-marketed games, with organizers on hard to teach participants how to play. Robillard says these games are much quickerplaying games, and each player stays involved until the completion of the game, unlike many mainstream board games. “So you are not caught in the game of Monopoly that never ends,” says Robillard. Although no one will be sinking anyone’s Battleship this weekend, organizers say the event will be fun for the whole family. Participants are more than welcome to bring their own games as there
will be open tables for game play. There will also be a live auction on Saturday night, for the chance at picking up some games for a good price. Also on Saturday night, FallCon will be handing out the Canadian Game Design Award. The convention begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday and will run until 4 p.m. on Sunday at Commonwealth Hall at 3961 52nd Avenue Northeast.

United in protest
Occupy Halifax at Grande Parade Square Members will be taking their message beyond the designated area outside city hall to Halifax’s Nocturne festival, set for the same night, said Dylan Sagar, an administrator of Occupy Halifax’s Facebook page. Since the group sprung up at the beginning of October, its Facebook page has attracted more than 2,300 likes.
On Saturday, cities around the world will join the Occupy Wall Street movement Here’s a snapshot of what’s happening in Metro cities across Canada Occupy Edmonton

at Churchill Square In a statement, organizers say they are concerned about corporate interests’ effect on political institutions and public policy, along with putting profits above the well-being of communities.
at Vancouver Art Gallery “The movement in its core is peaceful,” said organizer Min Reyes. “It’s not a protest; it’s more of a gathering for people to talk and try and figure out how we can change our society.”
Occupy Winnipeg at Manitoba legislature building Organizers say the seven-hour walk through the city’s banking district is a call to action against corporate greed, corporate control and Third World living conditions in northern communities.
Occupy Calgary
Occupy Toronto
at Bankers Hall Organizers have set up a “safe camp” on St. Patrick’s Island, which, as of mid-week, had 50 residents and was continuing to grow. Police plan to bring in more officers if necessary, expressing concern anarchists could infiltrate the rally.
at Financial District Organizers have been haunted by last year’s crackdown on G20 protests. In a petition to Toronto Chief Bill Blair, signatories called on police to respect the rights of demonstrators. “The goal is public safety and facilitation of peaceful protest,” responded police spokesman Mark Pugash.
Occupy Montreal at Square Victoria “We will not be moved. We will not leave. We are the 99 per cent,” reads the group’s website. It advises bringing tents and warm clothes.

Chow, the MP for Toronto’s Trinity-Spadina riding, applauded Nova Scotia’s free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood-testing program, the test that detects the cancer, and spoke of the need for the same system countrywide. Chow garnered multiple standing ovations from the
attentive crowd, and sparked more than a few eruptions of laughter. “We have a team of New Democratics determined to grow the best mustaches in town, and we call them our New DeMOcratics’” she said, referring to next month’s Movember fundraiser that raises money for men’s health. All jokes aside, Chow said she hopes to help make this the best Movember in Canada’s history, and believes the legacy of her husband’s prominent and recognizable moustache will encourage that. When asked by an audience member the reasoning for concealing the illness that took Layton’s life, Chow said, “He didn’t want people to lose hope if they had that kind of cancer.”

Unidentified man stops by Air Canada executive’s home with what appeared to be a hand gun Labour Minister Lisa Raitt closes office after receiving threats The labour dispute between Air Canada and its flight attendants has taken a menacing turn after a suspected gunman made a late-night appearance near an airline executive’s home and the federal labour minister closed her office after receiving threats. Police are investigating after a man showed up near Air Canada executive Duncan Dee’s Ottawa home Wednesday evening with what appeared to be a handgun. A police spokesman says the man drove up to a private security guard outside Dee’s house and showed him what looked like a gun before driving away.
“We responded to a call in that area at around 11:20 last night when a private security guard saw a suspicious male in the area,” Const. Marc Soucy told The Canadian Press. Soucy added that “Nothing was ever said that he was going to kill anybody or do harm to anyone.” Dee is the airline’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. He has been Air Canada’s main spokesman during the airline’s contract dispute with the union representing its 6,800 flight attendants. Air Canada was not immediately available for comment. Deadly threats On Thursday, threats prompted Labour Minister Lisa Raitt to close her constituency office in Milton, Ont., just outside Toronto. A note taped to the door did not specify the nature of the threats. “Please be advised that due to threats and charges of both a direct and an indirect nature, our office is closed for reasons relating to both personal and public safety concerns,” the note said.
For more coverage on the labour dispute, see page 14

Salvage efforts of stricken ship resume in N.Z. Good weather gives hope to crews looking to remove oil The Rena ran aground Oct. 5 on Astrolabe Reef The calmest weather in days gave salvage crews hope they would be able on Friday to resume pumping the remaining fuel from a cargo ship stuck on a New Zealand reef. The ship Rena has already spilled hundreds of tons of oil, and crews are in a race against nature to try and remove the remaining fuel before waves break up the vessel, which has begun to crack apart and is leaning on a 22-degree tilt. Last week crews removed about nine metric tons of oil before the weather forced them to postpone salvage attempts. Environmentalists have warned of a disaster for wildlife if all the ship’s 1,700 tonnes of oil and 200 tonnes of diesel is allowed to spill into the ocean. Nick Bohm, a spokes-
man for Maritime New Zealand, which is managing the emergency response, told The Associated Press Friday that crews are “relatively positive” they can proceed with plans to board the vessel and begin pumping oil to a nearby barge. He said pumping should begin Friday afternoon in an operation that could last several days. Bohm said there are stronger winds forecast for the weekend, which may hamper the operation. Heavy seas had kept salvage crews away from the 236-metre Rena for days, but better weather Thursday allowed crews to board the vessel for about six hours to check systems. Marine New Zealand salvage manager Bruce Anderson said the vessel has appeared to have stopped
“The reality is the vessel could break up at any point.” STEVE JONES, SPOKESMAN FOR MARITIME NEW ZEALAND
moving, which was necessary before pumping operations can resume. “While this is good news, we shouldn’t get too excited,” he told reporters. “We already had a complex project to start with; it’s even harder now that we’ve sustained damage aboard this vessel,” he said, referring to recent structural cracking. A vertical crack in the ship runs around the entire vessel — meaning the ship is now only held together by its internal components, said Steve Jones, another spokesman for Maritime New Zealand. Rena is seen stuck around on a reef on Thursday.
Charges laid The ship’s 44-year-old Filipino captain was charged Wednesday with operating a vessel in a manner causing unnecessary danger or risk and was released on bail Wednesday at Tauranga District Court. The ship’s second officer appeared in the same court Thursday on the same charge. If convicted, each could face a fine of up to 10,000 New Zealand dollars ($7,800) and 12 months in
prison. Their next court appearance is Oct. 19, when authorities say more charges are likely. The government has demanded to know why the ship crashed into the well-charted reef in calm weather, but the vessel’s owner, Greece-based Costamare Inc., has given no explanation. Costamare released a statement this week apologizing for the incident and said it was investigating how the ship could have run aground.
Maritime New Zealand estimates that at least 350 metric tons of heavy fuel oil have spilled from the hull, leading New Zealand’s environment minister, Nick Smith, to call it the country’s biggest maritime environmental disaster. Clumps of oil have washed up on pristine beaches near Tauranga. Maritime New Zealand said hundreds of oiled birds had been found dead and 51 others were being cleaned at a wildlife emergency centre. Three seals were also being treated. Several kilometres of coastline have been closed to the public, and some beaches were beginning to experience severe oiling, Jones said. “I was down there” this week, he said. “It was just black coming in — just black, black, black.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Both groups responded with similarly strong emotions, but the frontal lobes that control fear or aggression were less activated in gamers. “Both groups reacted strongly to the photos,” says Dr Christian Montag, lead author of the study. “But while the control group down-regulates their feelings, the gamers do not need to down-regulate because their initial response was not as high. Montag added: “(Firstperson-shooter players) do not respond as strongly to the real, negative-image material because they are used to it from their daily computer activities.”
British health officials say the country’s obesity epidemic has an easy fix: people should just eat less. The department of health said Thursday most adults in the nation of 60 million people are eating about 10 per cent more calories than necessary. To stop the bulging waistlines, officials said, the country needs to collectively trim five billion calories from its daily diet. But in a slightly confusing twist, the government also issued new calorie recommendations that are about 100 calories higher than the last figures in 1991. Men are now allowed to eat about 2,605 calories of food every day while for women, it’s 2,079.

News in brief Pilot error blamed for crash RUSSIA. A pilot helping to
investigate a Russian jet crash that killed 44 people said Thursday that a simulation pointed to pilot error as the cause. The Yak-42 jet crashed into the banks of the Volga River on Sept. 7 moments after takeoff from the city of Yaroslavl in western Russia, wiping out the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl professional ice hockey team, which included several former NHL players. Test pilot Vasily Sevastyanov told staterun Channel One television that the plane went into a spin because a pilot pulled it up too sharply following an abnormally slow run. Officials have not yet announced the reason
for the crash, but have said that all the plane's systems were functioning normally until impact. Russian media reports said the investigators believe that one of the pilots accidentally activated the wheel brakes during takeoff, while another pilot pulled the plane up to a critical angle in a desperate attempt to get it into the air. The sharp manoeuvre caused the jet to crash immediately after takeoff. The only person who survived the crash, flight engineer Alexander Sizov, told Channel One from his hospital bed that he couldn't say whether the plane's brake was activated during takeoff. The crash was the latest in a string of air disasters that have raised concern about plummeting aviation safety standards in Russia. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Iceland eyes volcano Rumblings have experts worried about another eruption
Earthquakes around Icelandic volcano Katla mean an eruption could be imminent, say experts.
If Iceland’s air-trafficparalyzing volcanic eruption last year seemed catastrophic, just wait for the sequel. That’s what some experts are saying as they nervously watch rumblings beneath a much more powerful Icelandic volcano — Katla — which could spew an ash cloud dwarfing the 2010 eruption that cost airlines $2 billion and drove
home how vulnerable modern society is to the whims of nature. Brooding over rugged moss-covered hills on Iceland’s southern edge, Katla is a much bigger beast than the nearby Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which chugged ash all over Europe for several weeks in an eruption that local scientist Pall Einarsson describes nonetheless as “small.”
Katla’s last major eruption in 1918 continued for more than a month, turning day into night, starving crops of sunlight and killing off some livestock. The eruption melted some of the ice sheet covering Katla, flooding surrounding farmlands with a torrent of water. Now, clusters of small earthquakes are being detected around Katla, which
means an eruption could be imminent, seismologists say. “It is definitely showing signs of restlessness,” said Einarsson, a professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland. At the aptly named Volcano Hotel in Vik, co-owner Margaret Brigisdottir is watching warily. “It has been 100 years,” she said. “The time is coming.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

FOOTLOOSE! KICK OFF THE SUNDAY SHOES! THE METRO LIST
1
Footloose remake: Starting Friday, you gotta cut loose, footloose, kick off the Sunday NEIL MORTON shoes, because the remake of METRO 1984’s music drama Footloose is out. It’s about a big-city kid who moves to a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned. So ... please, Louise, pull me off of my knees! Jack, get Mack, come on before we crack! Lose your blues, everybody cut footloose! Save a high school: PCVS, a historic downtown high school in Peterborough, Ont., founded in 1827 that counts Lester B. Pearson, Sean Cullen, Serena Ryder and Jim Balsillie as alumni, is fighting through public protests, petitions and YouTube videos to keep its school alive after the local school board recommended that it close. Shutting down an inner-city arts school with culture and heritage will have a significant impact on the economy and fabric of a downtown in a small city. Forget Footloose, this is real-life drama. Winnipeg Jets: Yes, the Jets are flying again after a 15-year hiatus, with a star-studded home opener against Montreal Sunday night that included our PM, George Stroumboulopoulos, and Jim Cuddy and Chantal Kreviazuk singing the national anthem. The Jets might have lost the game, but they won the nation over and their home crowd of 15,000, which gave them a thunderous ovation at game’s end. Welcome back. Ping pong hip: SPiN Toronto, a new 12,000-squarefoot basement ping-pong bar in downtown T.O., had its grand opening this week. It’s trying to mimic the success of one of the same name (which it’s part of) in Manhattan, part owned by Susan Sarandon. SPiN is a place to drink, play ping-pong and socialize. Just watch: The next big fad will be pool tables in every basement in the world. Next to a beer fridge. Ron MacLean’s Cornered: The hockey broadcaster icon’s new memoir, Cornered, went on sale this week, and offers inside accounts from his early days as a part-time radio announcer and weather forecaster in Red Deer, Alta., to his time hosting Hockey Night in Canada. Sounds promising, but they should have just called it Coach’s Corner and let Don Cherry write the prologue and epilogue. Rosie’s new crush: Rose O’Donnell is back — four years after leaving The View and a decade since ending her successful daytime talk show — with The Rosie Show, which debuted this week on the Oprah Winfrey Network. Thankfully, it appears she’s not resuscitating her infatuation with Tom Cruise. That’s so ’90s. Apparently her new boy crush is Russell Brand. That’s more 2011. Lee Harvey Oswald’s lover: Judyth Vary Baker is making a rare public appearance next week in Toronto to mark what would be Oswald’s 72nd birthday. Baker, author of Me & Lee: How I Came to Know, Love and Lose Lee Harvey Oswald, has been trying to clear Oswald’s name. Her take: Lee was an undercover agent who had penetrated a ring determined to murder president Kennedy and was actually trying to prevent it but instead got framed. So, JFK conspiracy buffs, there you go.

Germany. Largest Book Fair
Worth Mentioning She’s a 40-year-old mother of eight, with a ninth child due soon. The family homestead in a Burundi village is too small to provide enough food, and three of the children have quit school for lack of money. “I regret to have made all those children,” says Godelive Ndageramiwe. At Ahmed Kasadha’s prosperous farm in eastern Uganda, it’s a different story. “My father had 25 children — I have only 14 so far, and expect to produce more in the future,” says Kasadha, who has two wives. He considers a large family a sign of success. By the time Ndageramiwe’s ninth child arrives, and any further members of the Kasadha clan, the world’s population will have passed a momentous milestone. As of Oct. 31, according to the UN Population Fund, there will be seven billion people on Earth. Experts say most of Africa — and other highgrowth developing nations such as Afghanistan and Pakistan — will be hard-pressed to furnish enough food, water and jobs for their people.

Seattle superhero appears in court A self-proclaimed superhero wore a charcoal-coloured mask Thursday as he entered a Seattle courtroom where prosecutors said they hadn’t yet decided whether to file charges against him. Canadian trade deficit widens Canada’s merchandise trade deficit widened in August as import growth outpaced exports in response to softening U.S. demand and a strong loonie, but analysts saw a positive side to Thursday’s report from Statistics Canada. The raw numbers were mildly negative and in line with expectations following a big exports surge in July. Merchandise imports grew 0.7 per cent, while exports rose 0.5 per cent, taking Canada’s trade deficit to $622 million in August from a downwardly revised $539 million in July. In volume terms, when
currency fluctuations are factored out, exports declined 1.1 per cent, the agency said. But the most important development, said economist Peter Hall of Export Development Canada, was the agency’s revision of export growth in July to 4.6 per cent, from 4.1. That takes the sting out of much of August’s retrenchment, he said. “The fact we did not recoil from the July numbers is very significant. China’s export growth slows amid global weakness China’s export growth fell in September in a sign of the West’s malaise and a setback for hopes Chinese demand will help prop up a shaky global economy. The slump in Western nations will hurt struggling Chinese exporters and raise the spectre of politically sensitive job losses. Export growth fell to 17.1 per cent over a year earlier, down from August’s 24.5 per cent,
customs data showed Thursday. Import growth also fell, while China’s politically sensitive trade surplus narrowed to $14.5 billion US. China's domestic demand also has weakened following repeated interest rate hikes and investment curbs as the government tries to steer growth to a more sustainable level. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Hedge-fund founder receives record term for insider trading Former executive profited from companies like Google, IBM, Hilton Hotels Extensive use of wiretaps belped police break white-collar case A former billionaire described by the U.S. government as “the modern face of illegal insider trading” was sentenced Thursday to 11 years in prison, the longest insider-trading sentence ever but far short of the two decades sought by prosecutors. Galleon Group founder Raj Rajaratnam also was fined $10 million US and ordered to forfeit $53.8 million by District Judge Richard J. Holwell, who said he concluded that Rajaratnam made well over $50 million in profits from his illegal trades. “His crimes and the scope of his crimes reflect a virus in our business culture that needs to be eradicated,” Holwell said. “When the integrity of the marketplace is called into question, the public suffers.” The sentence eclipsed by one year the prison term given to one of Rajaratnam’s co-defendants just weeks ago. The Sri Lanka-born Rajaratnam, 54, was ordered to report to a yet-to-bedesignated prison on Nov. 28. His lawyers asked that he be allowed to report to the medical facility at the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Car-

Air Canada flight attendants and their supporters protest outside Federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt’s constituency office in Milton, Ont., on Thursday.
Union actions unfair: Air Canada Labour unions accuse Harper government of ‘trampling’ workers’ rights Air Canada demanded compensation Thursday from the union representing its 6,800 flight attendants, accusing it of bargaining in bad faith. The airline, which did not specify how much it was seeking, said the Canadian Union of Public Employees did not do enough to encourage the ratifica-
tion of two tentative deals that were negotiated but later rejected. In the unfair labour practice complaint to the Canada Industrial Relations Board, Air Canada accused the union of increasing its demands during its latest round of bargaining and misrepresenting what its members would accept.
“CUPE made these representations to Air Canada without having conducted any formal surveys of its membership,” the airline said. Jeff Taylor, president of the Air Canada component at CUPE, said he believed the deal reached with the airline, under the threat of back-to-work legislation,

RIM backs its delay BlackBerry services returned to normal Thursday after four days of global outages, but the maker of the smartphone faces a new set of challenges as it tries to clean up a public-relations headache. Research In Motion’s two co-CEOs — Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie — emerged from more than three days of silence to answer questions and apologize again about the biggest outage in the Canadian company’s history.
RIM offered only a few updates while a growing number of BlackBerry users turned to their Facebook and Twitter accounts to express their frustrations. The company has about 70 million BlackBerry subscribers worldwide, and while the technical glitches did not affect everyone, discontent spread fast. RIM has now stepped into territory, commonly known as crisis management. Balsillie defended RIM’s decision to wait until

Will the town lift the ban? Will the love birds ever get to break dance in public?

Country-fried fun
RC: I thought Wormald and Hough shone the brightest when they are in motion on the dance floor— which isn’t often enough — but Miles Teller as Willard (played by Chris Penn in the original), Ren’s dance-challenged best friend steals the show on and off the dance floor.
A Michigan woman is suing the distributor of the Ryan Gosling film Drive because the film wasn’t what she expected based on its marketing. Sarah Deming is suing the film’s distributor, FilmDistrict, and Emagine Novi Theater because the movie “bore very little similarity to a chase, or race action film.” METRO
MB: You could not be more right. Teller has the looks and presence of a young John Cusack. And only Dennis Quaid could take the thankless preacher role and imbue it with a sense of humanity. But in the end, it’s still a cheesy flick, even if this remake takes it from mild to medium cheddar.
Harry’s legacy: Potter studio near London to open to public
Footloose redux grittier than expected, with stars Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough shining on the dance floor But in the end, it’s still full of cheese
Richard: Mark, Footloose is grittier than you would imagine a movie starring Ryan Seacrest’s girlfriend to be. The slickness normally associated with contemporary teen fare is mostly missing here, replaced with the steamy Southern feel that permeates director Craig Brewer’s other films. You won’t hear a line like, “You’re sexier than socks on a rooster,” in any of the Twilight movies. Mark: Yes, Richard, the best thing about the movie is its authentic country-fried details. It doesn’t condescend to its blue collar characters and that’s to its credit. I thought the original was
dated way back in the ’80s. Now, in an Internet world, the town that banned dancing would have been ridiculed all over America and the American Civil Liberties Union would have filed suit immediately. And why did the town ban teen dancing when the real problem was teen drinking? RC: Because then the movie would have to have been called Intervention, and that’s a whole different story! Rebooting a wellloved classic is a tricky business. There are slight changes, Ren is now from Boston instead of Chicago, the tractor game of chicken from the original is now a
bus race and the dancing has been updated but the upbeat rebellious core (and most of the songs) of the ’84 movie is intact. MB: Speaking of dancing, I wish there had been more of it. The first dance scene in the parking lot had nice energy, Kenny Wormald’s solo when he dances off his anger in the warehouse was riveting, but then it takes a long time to get to the big finale, which I thought was a dud. The movie should have gone craaaaaaazzzzzy at that point, but everyone, including the choreographer, was on their best behaviour. And what did you think of the acting?

See it twice 88888 | See it now 8888 | Worth watching 888 | Yawn 88 | Don’t bother 8 The Thing Genre: Horror Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. Stars: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton 881
Classic sci-fi thriller The Thing gets its first makeover in nearly 30 years in this updated prequel about a replicating alien killing off stranded scientists in remote Antarctica. While the film delivers serviceable respect to John Carpenter’s 1982 version with exemplary use of scenery, effects and a strong lead in Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Final Destination 3), the outcome is relatively predictable and the plot points somewhat transparent. STEVE GOW
The Big Year Genre: Comedy Director: David Frankel Stars: Jack Black, Steve Martin, Owen Wilson 8811⁄2
Take ambition, intrigue, passion, backstabbing, dastardly deeds and greed on a massive scale, add laughs, set it in the world of competitive bird watching and you have The Big Year. Audience faves Black, Martin and Wilson embark on the yearlong competition to score the most species sightings, in a strangely fascinating, insightful and funny road trip and gets added credit for having the guts regarding the whole bird watching thing. Frankel brings Marley-and-Me heart and The-Devil-WearsPrada sass to this unexpected gem, based on Mark Obmascik’s book.
Machine Gun Preacher Genre: Action Director: Marc Forster Stars: Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan 88
Machine Gun Preacher is, if nothing else, a cautionary tale for other filmmakers: Just because your source material is inherently captivating and thrilling doesn’t mean your movie will be by default. The film takes the harrowing true story of Sam Childers and re-
duces it to a plodding, by-the-numbers biopic strangled by its own chronology. And the source material is pretty impressive: Childers, an ex-con and recovering drug addict, finds Jesus and heads to Africa for some missionary work. But when he’s confronted with the horrors of war-torn Sudan, he launches his own crusade to rescue orphaned children, becoming a folk hero and target for rebel forces. NED EHRBAR

“All for one, and one for all! — that ageless motto, evoking 17th century swashbuckling Frenchmen, sounds its familiar jingle yet again with the release of a new The Three Musketeers. This time, however, we get “action fresh and modern for the younger audience, according to director and co-producer Paul W.S. Anderson, the man behind the Resident Evil saga.
“I felt that every generation ought to get its own version of The Three Musketeers — one that reflects of that particular decade, he says of the 1844 classic by Alexandre Dumas. So in essence: a new cast, some peppy dialogue and novel visual effects — all in trending 3-D. Anderson’s “stellar ensemble cast has some degree of critical acclaim: Logan Lerman, who leads as D’Artagnan, is comingof-age in Hollywood, having appeared in Percy Jackson; the world-weary Musketeers are played by

“I felt that every generation ought to get its own version of The Three Musketeers.
Heartthrob On The Three Musketeers set, everyday was a bad hair day for Logan Lerman.
DIRECTOR PAUL W.S. ANDERSON
Matthew Macfadyen (Pride & Prejudice), Ray Stevenson (TV’s Rome) and Luke Evans (the upcoming Immortals); and Anderson’s wife and cult favourite Milla Jovovich is triple-agent Milady de Winter. Among the bad guys, Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) plays the conniving Richelieu, and onetime Alister Orlando Bloom appears as the dastardly Duke of Buckingham. D’Artagnan and his buddy Musketeers must protect the King of France from those two maniacs. “The movie doesn’t take itself seriously, tongue-in-cheek, irreverent, fun, ‘go buy a big bag of popcorn and take a trip’ version of the movie. It’s
not a historically accurate retelling of The Three Musketeers that the novelist wrote.
“I was very conscious of those extensions, says the 19-year-old from Beverly Hills about the tousled emo-meets-This is Spinal Tap mullet he wore for his latest movie adventure. “They were like little beads, melted on to five strands of hair one at a time. Honestly it felt like a beanie that you couldn’t take off, says Lerman. Aside from questionable hairstyles, Lerman keeps his heartthrob credentials current as D’Artagnan, the cocky farmer boy who swaps the countryside in exchange for sword-shaped slugfests with middle-aged men under the bright lights of Paris.

MATT KIELTYKA IN VANCOUVER
William Shakespeare would have a field day with Wiebo Ludwig. Equally vilified as a terrorist and hailed for his long-standing battle against oil and gas giants, the reclusive preacher at the centre of David York’s new documentary, Wiebo’s War, is as interesting, complicated and flawed as a protagonist gets. In fact, York uses King Lear to describe the notorious man suspected of the 2008 EnCana pipeline bombings. “I am a man more sinned against than sinning, York recited at the Vancouver International Film Festival last week. “He’s a conflicted family man. What he was doing in his struggle was trying to defend his family and his land. “You can’t judge somebody until you get a sense

of the pressures they’re under and that became the purpose of the film ‌ to give the audience a means to arrive at their own judgments, to see if they’d be sympathetic and to think about what they’d do if they were in that situation. It wasn’t long after York started filming his portrait that a new string of bombings surfaced and the Ludwig family was once again thrust in the middle of a po-
lice and media storm. The access afforded to the filmmaker allowed York to capture Ludwig — everything from his faith, and motives to the horrific health effects nearby drilling has had on his family — in a way that national news headlines simply couldn’t convey. “My picture of him is completely at odds of the current affairs version of him that everybody
knows, said York. “He’s a human being, and so am I, and so are you. Whether the actions of this particular human being are right or wrong are ultimately left open to interpretation. Wiebo’s War opens theatrically in major Canadian cities starting this week. The film will also tour “oil patch communities affected by drilling.

SALUTE THE UNSUNG HEROES OF ROCK ‘N’ ROLL GETTY IMAGES
SOUND CHECK
Thomas Organ Company called a midrange boost. Fiddling with it produced the same sort of effect as a trumpeter or trombonist using a mute over the horn. Adapting it to a foot pedal, he gave one to Zappa who gave it to Jimi Hendrix. He used it to great effect in Voodoo Chile in much the same way Eric Clapton featured it in Cream’s White Room. Guitarists have been using wah-wah pedals ever since.

If anyone asked you to list some of the great heroes of rock ‘n’ roll, you’d probably come back with names like Elvis, Lennon and Cobain.

ll completely legitimate responses, yes. But here are some names that are also just as important to the history of rock — but in a different way.
Most people credit Les Paul with having something to do with the invention of the electric guitar — and he did. But the original props must go to Beauchamp, who invented an electrically-amplified guitar in 1931 and began selling models with the help of the Ro-Pat-In Corporation the following year. The first documented performance featuring an electric guitar was in 1932 using one of Beauchamp’s Electric Spanish models. Hugh Le Caine
An atomic physicist by vocation, Le Caine ended up in Ottawa working with circuits that could tame electricity and turn it into sounds. By the mid-’40s, he had constructed an apparatus that made music using a piano-style keyboard. Very cool — but calling his invention The Electronic Sackbut wasn’t a great
Though Jimi Hendrix used the foot pedal to perfection on his classic song Voodoo Chile, it should be noted that he did not invent the guitar apparatus. That distinction belongs to Del Casher.

During a session in Nashville in 1960, Grady’s guitar amplifier suffered a sort of meltdown. Instead of sounding clean and pure, his guitar sounded fuzzy and distort-

ed — but in a cool way. With the help of some engineers, Grady came up with a foot pedal that could summon this fuzziness on demand. It became known as a “fuzz pedal” and gave guitarists a way to make their instrument sound power-
ful and menacing. Del Casher
Not too long after Grady Martin discovered the power of fuzz, Del — who played guitar for everyone from Lawrence Welk to Frank Zappa — discovered a circuit made by the

Marshall ran a music shop in London. When guitarists started demanding more powerful amplifiers, he started building them. Marshall Amplifiers are now standard dream gear for guitarists everywhere. Apocalypse now: hit zombie show back for a second season on AMC Just down the road from a tiny country church in rural Georgia, the apocalypse has already arrived. A band of scrappy survivors is fighting the undead, camping in the woods in hopes of outrunning the hordes of zombies roaming the world. Few of them have made it, and at any moment they could be eaten alive and turned into one of the monsters that haunt them day and night. It’s just another day on the set of The Walking Dead, the hit AMC series that starts its second season Sunday with 13 horrifying new episodes. Based on the popular comic book of the same name by writer Robert
Kirkman, the show is about life after the zombie apocalypse. “The show is not about how gory we can make it, said co-executive producer Greg Nicotero, the show’s special effects makeup guru who also directs this season. “We want it to be shocking. We want to remind the audience of the world we’re in — that world is brutal and savage and raw. But it’s also about survival. As always, the show follows the first rule of the zombie genre: No one on the show has ever heard of a zombie, calling them “walkers instead. They spend each episode learning the tricks of surviving the undead: avoiding loud

Black and White a splash of colour The new album from Lenny Kravitz tackles race in America Lots of big names featured on his 9th CD Lenny Kravitz, who was born to a black mother and white father, didn’t recognize skin colour in his own home as a child. “I grew up in a house full of every colour,” he recalls. Things changed when he went to elementary school. “I didn’t know anything about problems until I went to first grade and it was brought to my attention,” the rock singer and guitarist said. “I knew my father looked different than my mother, but I didn’t know that that meant anything. ... I had no idea that it was an issue.” On his latest album, Black and White America, 47-year-old Kravitz tackles that “issue” as well as what his parents experienced as an interracial couple in 1960s New York. (Kravitz’s mother starred as Helen Willis in the hit television show The Jeffersons in the 1970s and ’80s.) The Grammy winner’s ninth album, which de-

side of the family ‘til I was born. It took them a minute to get it together. But in essence ... none of that bothered them. They were in love and they wanted to be together and that was that. Talk about the title track on this album.
It’s a very special song to me and it’s obviously got a lot to do with who I am. It’s my story. It’s everything I knew growing up. It’s my parents’ story — being an interracial couple growing up in the time of the civil rights movement. And it’s the story of today — what we’re going through, dealing with race and the fact that we have an African-American president. How do you think Barack Obama is doing as our president?
It’s a tough gig. I think he’s done a lot of great things and I think that some things are challenging and difficult for him. But I don’t know how it works. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Big Boi settles drug case, avoids jail time DON ARNOLD/GETTY IMAGES
Big Boi
Grammy-winning OutKast rapper Big Boi has reached a deal on Florida drug charges that allows him to avoid jail time. Big Boi appeared in a Miami courtroom Thursday as prosecutors outlined the deal that includes three months of drug testing, community service and $2,000 in donations to charities. The 36-year-old rapper’s real name is Antwan Patton. He was arrested getting off a cruise ship in August when a K-9 dog alerted to
drugs Big Boi was carrying. The substances included ecstasy, a cigarette roller with marijuana residue and the ecstasy ingredient MDMA. Big Boi had faced two felony drug charges. Prosecutors say if he remains drug-free after three months of testing, those charges will be dismissed. The Atlanta-based group OutKast has won six Grammys and made six platinum-plus albums, including Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Even though it’s been making wine since around 5,000 B.C., as a culture China’s always been about the food, so its population never embraced the art of combing liquids and solids with the enthusiasm of their counterparts elsewhere. Since Chinese food is a combo of sweet, sour and spicy, finding wines to work with everything on your plate is about as easy as keeping a straight face when someone tells you he or she likes the Charlie Sheen-less Three And A Half Men. My pick is something soft with a touch of residual sweetness like a German riesling. Off-dry sparkling and rosé wines work, too. If you want the hottest Asian food marriage, fill your glass with Moscato. Originally Italian, American upstarts like the non-vintage Barefoot Moscato ($7.99 - $11.99) take all the round, lightly-sweet fruit of the muscat grape and massage it into a perfectly plush, tropicallyinfluenced (and not too boozy) companion for any Chinese menu. The family behind The Lingnan restaurant, and stars of the The Quon Dynasty, share their Black Bean Chicken recipe It’s a fave at the eatery
Loved by its customers, the Lingnan restaurant in Edmonton is cosy and elegant but quaintly out of date. The Quon Dynasty follows the family’s adventures through a realm power struggles, sibling rivalry and egg rolls.
Black Bean Chicken This recipe has been popular at the Lingnan since the 1970s. The family makes its own black bean garlic sauce, but you can find it at any good Chinese grocery, and even at some regular supermarkets. Black bean sauce is popular in Cantonese cooking. Try adding a teaspoon or two to your own stir-fries. And, if you enjoy this recipe, try substituting beef or shrimp for the chicken, or try different vegetable combos. Chinese cooking should be fun!
Preparation:
1
Blend together seasonings, except the 1 tbsp oil. Coat chicken with the seasonings; then, stir in the oil. Marinate at least 15 minutes.
2
Heat 3 tbsp oil in pan. Fry chicken until cooked. Strain and set aside.
3
Heat 2 tbsp oil. Add black bean sauce and onion. Stir-fry until it
smells good (about 2 minutes). Add peppers, celery and carrots, and stir-fry until onions are soft. Add chicken and cooking wine. Mix well. Add in 1 tsp. sugar, ½ tbsp oyster sauce, white pepper and sesame oil. Pour in chicken stock. When sauce boils, thicken with cornstarch mixture. (1 tsp cornstarch and 1 tbsp water). • 1 tbsp oil (add last)
Ingredients: Chicken seasoning • 1 tsp powdered chicken broth mix • 1 tsp light soy sauce • 1 tsp oyster sauce • ½ tsp sugar • 1 tbsp cornstarch • 2 tbsp water • Dash of black pepper • 2 drops sesame oil

The victory gave Kiprusoff 263 wins as a Flame, one more than Mike Vernon. It also prevented Montreal goalie Carey Price from picking up his 100th career win. It was their first meeting since the Flames shut out Montreal 4-0 in the Heritage Classic outdoor game in Calgary last winter. Montreal outshot the Flames 36-21. Calvillo’s record legit in its own right PAUL CHIASSON/THE CANADIAN PRESS
CFL EXTRA POINTS DAN TOTH CALGARY@METRONEWS.CA
Anthony Calvillo’s CFL record for all-time passing yards stands on its own merit, without being tagged the “pro football record too. The CFL made quite a fuss on Thanksgiving Day when the Montreal Alouettes QB surpassed Damon Allen to become the league’s new king of the passing game, then the league went out of its way to pile Calvillo’s numbers on top of NFL passing records to emphasize the point. It’s unnecessary and is an insult to players on both sides of the border. With a 50-yard pass to Jamel Richardson, Calvillo eclipsed Allen’s 72,381 ca-

reer passing yards, opening the floodgates of accolades from the likes of former NFL stars Dan Marino and Brett Favre. What does it matter? Calvillo’s numbers are worthy of praise without the recognition from the NFL and comparing the numbers from different leagues is unwarranted. “I never looked at the numbers the NFL guys accomplished because I thought in the CFL, we have our own league with our own records, Calvillo said.
“But that was special to me. Special maybe, but not necessary. Riders limp into the sunset: Has a CFL team ever fallen as fast and as far as the 2011 Saskatchewan Roughriders? Almost guaranteed to miss the playoffs, the Riders appeared in three of the last four Grey Cup games and were picked in this column to finish first in the West. Yet the Riders offence under QBs Darian Durant and
Ryan Dinwiddie is so inept, longstanding records for futility are starting to fall. The Riders haven’t scored an offensive touchdown in more than three games — 14 quarters, in fact, the longest Saskatchewan scoring drought since 1979 when the team won just two games. Their nine points scored in the last three games is the worst string of futility in Riders history. Hard to revel in Argos’ misfortune: Only in the CFL do fans and media pull for sad-sack teams because it’s “good for the league. That’s exactly what’s happening with the CFL-worst Toronto Argonauts, bottom feeders at 311 and eliminated from the playoffs, even though most folks outside the Greater Toronto Area love to hate all things Double Blue. The Argos’ success is essential to the league’s survival and a key ingredient in maintaining its TV contract.
