Tattooed cops a quandary for OPP brass No date set for OPP to outline new rules Toronto police only hide ‘offensive’ tats

Duo to rep Canada at London 2012 Games Both Gillis and Coolsaet will be packing for the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London after battering the Olympic standard of two hours 11 minutes 29 seconds. Canada hasn’t had a Canadian in an Olympic marathon since Bruce Deacon in Sydney in 2000. Coolsaet finished the race with a personal-best time of 2:10.55, while Gillis was fourth, finishing just under the qualification mark with a time of 2:11.28. More coverage, page 4.
An Ontario Provincial Police constable with tattoo-covered arms was mistaken for a “gangbanger” by a superior officer at a traffic stop in northwestern Ontario in the spring of 2010. The superior thought the man had stolen a police cruiser and OPP uniform. The tattooed officer was later directed to cover up his arms based on a newly implemented policy that targeted offensive tattoos. The constable didn’t think he was being offensive. With the face of policing evolving, a younger cohort has embraced tattoos. The OPP is struggling to design a policy that balances freedom of expression and professional image. The constable from the example above had a sleeve tattoo on his right arm depicting a dragon and tiger — martial arts symbols. He also had a large tattoo of the face of his grandfather as a memorial. “He was raised by his grandfa-

ther after his parents passed away and it had sentimental meaning for him,” said Jim Christie, head of the Ontario Provincial Police Association. The officer filed a grievance and the OPP responded with an even tougher policy, forcing all 9,000 members to cover up any visible tattoos. An arbitrator later struck down the coverup protocol, leaving the OPP without a policy and putting them in a delicate situation. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

As Ryan Vaz’s 20-year-old daughter fights for her life with a severe brain injury, he is pleading for drivers to listen to his message: “This is what speeding does. My beautiful daughter will never have her life back. It is gone,” he says. Before Oct. 4, Natasha Vaz was a Humber College business student who was working at the TD Bank to save money to go on to get her MBA. “She will never step foot in a university again,” her father says. After Natasha’s car was T-boned by another vehicle that police say was speeding, she was airlifted in critical condition to Sunnybrook hospital. “She was in a coma for five days and now that she

has woken up, her brain will never function the same. It’s like when she was a child again,” Vaz says. Natasha also suffered a shattered pelvis and severe spinal and head injuries. Vaz is calling for the province to bring in harsher penalties for people caught street-racing and speeding, “so innocent people aren’t being hurt,” he said. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Residents seek to ground skydivers ‘Big ugly plane’ may be great to jump out of, but people in Georgina complain of noise, fumes, trampled azaleas As many as 21 skydivers can be seen in the sky during jumps Fed up with deafening noise, noxious fumes and rogue skydivers landing on their properties, residents of Georgina, on the southern shore of Lake Simcoe, are petitioning their town council to take action against the Parachute School of Toronto. Some 200 irate Georginians have signed the petition and presented it to local politicians. A town council report on the matter is expected next week.
“If they wreck anything, say they land in your azaleas and destroy them, that’s criminal trespass,” says resident Paul Nicholls, who is spearheading the protest. The school has been operating since 1974, though it used to run out of Arthur, Ont. It relocated to Georgina in 2002 to be closer to Toronto customers. It runs from May to October, 9 a.m. to sunset, five days a week, during which about 1,000
flights take place. Mary Kay lives about 60 metres from the airport. The noise had been tolerable, she says, but things changed in the summer of 2010 when a new, louder plane came into use. Now the noise and fumes are unbearable, she says. “It is hard on the blood pressure when you get all wound up about something like this,” says Kay, 76. Adam Mabee, president of the parachute school,
says he has yet to talk with the petitioners. Of the 400 jumps conducted weekly, he says just a couple of skydivers miss their target, the airport. “Statistically, that’s pretty low,” he says. The worst damage happened two years ago to an awning, he says, and he paid for repairs. In fact, he says, people whose property they land on are pretty friendly about it. “On a Sunday afternoon they’ll be sitting
out on a back porch sipping a drink and enjoying the show.” As for the offending aircraft, Mabee says it’s a “big ugly plane great for jumping out of.” He says he doesn’t notice it being louder than others. Still, as far as Kay is concerned, the airport was never meant to house such a large operation. “It’s just a roar,” she says. “You just grin and bear it and close the windows.” TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

London calling for two marathoners
KEITH BEATY/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Canada hasn’t had a participant in an Olympic marathon since Bruce Deacon in Sydney in 2000 Reid Coolsaet and Eric Gillis are London bound. The Canadian duo booked their tickets to the 2012 Summer Games after bettering the Olympic standard of two hours 11 minutes 29 seconds yesterday at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Coolsaet finished third in the race with a personalbest time of 2:10.55 while Gillis was fourth, just finishing under the qualification mark with a time of 2:11.28. “I can’t believe it was by a second,” Gillis said afterwards. “A marathon and one second? “I could’ve just as easily been one second over. I feel really, really lucky to get that standard. I couldn’t have done it this time

last year, I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind to go after that. Things are working out well now, things are clicking.” Coolsaet posted his time despite having to take a washroom break at about the 25-kilometre mark. “It didn’t take too
much time but obviously I lost contact with the front pack,” he said. “Luckily I had a pacer and clawed my way up the next three kilometres and got myself up with that front pack again.” Kenya’s Kenneth Mungara won the race for the fourth straight year, posting a time of 2:09.51. Ethiopia’s Shami Abdulahi Dawit was second. Coolsaet narrowly missed the Canadian record en route to finishing third. The 32-year-old from Hamilton’s time was just off the mark of 2:10.09 set by Jerome Drayton in 1975. Drayton’s 36-year-old record is the oldest on the Canadian track and field record books.

Controversial show doesn’t make it to air KATE ALLEN/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Lake Shore, Canada’s reality TV answer to MTV’s Jersey Shore, appeared with a bang. A year ago, an online teaser for the show, featuring eight combative cast members labelled by ethnic background, drew massive buzz — and massive controversy from critics, who called the concept “racist.” This month, it died with a whimper. “I am sorry to say this, but it’s over,” reads an email from producer
Maryam Rahimi, sent to the show’s cast on Oct. 2. Networks declined to pick the show up, she writes. Cast members, back at their day jobs, have mixed feelings about their shortlived ride as reality TV celebrities-in-waiting. “What do I say to people now?” asks Salem Moussallam — billed on Lake Shore as “The Lebanese” — who runs a designer consignment shop on Queen Street West and says he audi-

tioned to generate publicity for his business. “It’s been really embarrassing.” Lake Shore would have sequestered cast members in a house together and broadcast the drama, supposedly generated by contestants clashing backgrounds. Its online teaser drew widespread condemnation by critics, including Bernie Farber, then CEO of the Canadian Jewish Congress. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Email Rahimi’s email says producers pitched the show to three networks and “had a good connection” with Rogers. But an executive shakeup at the media giant brought in new people who hadn’t heard of the show, Rahimi’s email claims. Neither the network or Rahimi responded to a request for comment.

Many taking part in Occupy Canada movement brave crisp fall weather to camp out at parks A day after kicking off their movement with loud voices and larger numbers, Canadians who gathered to decry corporate greed and social inequality spent yesterday nailing down their action plan for the coming week through long meetings with smaller groups. By late yesterday afternoon the numbers of Occupy Canada participants had thinned, but many expected their ranks to swell today as the financial sectors they were protesting reopened. “Today’s going to be a major day for planning a large impact for Monday as a demonstration for (when) the stock exchange opens, said Niko Salassidis, 20, who set up the Occupy Toronto Facebook group.
No trouble yet The protests across Canada have been orderly so far, marked by cordial relations between police and demonstrators — a sharp contrast to the riots that erupted during last year’s G20 demonstrations in Toronto and following Vancouver’s Stanley Cup loss in June.
“We plan to make a very large statement. But Bryan Hyshka, 21, a volunteer at Edmonton’s downtown camp site, added many of the protesters had to be at work today, so it was unclear how many would be available to continue the protest during the week. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Several hundred protesters in at least seven U.S. cities supporting the growing Occupy Wall Street movement were arrested over the weekend after refusing to obey police orders to leave public areas, including 175 people at a park in Chicago, where the arrests brought about a new phase of civil disobedience, organizers there said yesterday. The arrests were mostly peaceful and came as somewhat of a contrast to earlier demonstrations, where protesters took care to follow laws in order to continue protesting Wall Street’s role in the financial crisis and other grievances about economic injustice. Overseas, tens of thousands nicknamed “the indignant” marched in cities across Europe, as the protests that began in New York linked up with longrunning demonstrations against government costcutting and failed financial policies in Europe. Protesters also turned out in Australia, Asia and South Africa. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Libyans bulldoze Gadhafi’s compound Libyan revolutionary forces bulldozed the green walls surrounding Moammar Gadhafi’s main Tripoli compound yesterday, saying it was time “to tear down this symbol of tyranny. The sprawling, fortresslike compound known as Bab al-Aziziya has long been hated by Libyans who feared to even walk nearby during Gadhafi’s more than four decades in power and its capture was seen as a turning point in the civil war as revolutionaries overran the capital in late August. Ahmad Ghargory, commander of a revolutionary brigade, said the area will be turned into a public park accessible to all Libyans. Already, the courtyard in front of Gadhafi’s former house, which he used
for many fiery speeches trying to rally supporters during the uprising, has been turned into a weekly market. Tripoli residents roam the premises as if at a museum, with vendors selling revolutionary flags and other souvenirs. The compound was a main target for NATO airstrikes during the months leading to Gadhafi’s ouster in late August. Fighters forced their way into the area on Aug. 23 during the battle for the capital, jubilantly rampaging through the remnants of barracks, personal living quarters and offices seen as the most defining symbol of Gadhafi’s nearly 42-year rule. Yemen’s war of words
MOHAMMED HAMOUD/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
President slams diplomats ahead of UN talks on transfer of power Yemen’s embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh says foreign diplomats have been misled by the country’s opposition and are conveying false information about the situation in Yemen. Yesterday, Saleh’s security forces opened fire on protesters, killing at least seven. Over the past two days, government snipers killed 10 troops of renegade army general Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, who defected and joined protests months ago, al-Ahmar said in a statement. He said they were killed near his compound and while protect-
ing protesters in the capital, Sanaa. In a separate statement, Al-Ahmar described Saleh as “the ignorant man who does nothing but killings. Saleh clings to power despite more than nine months of street protests, inspired by popular uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt. He has balked at signing a deal backed by his powerful neighbours and the U.S. in hopes of providing a smooth transition of power. Under the agreement, Saleh would resign and hand power to his vicepresident in return for immunity from prosecution. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Palestinians see heroes, Israelis query swap NASSER SHIYOUKHI/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
This week’s planned Mideast prisoner swap is unleashing deep anguish in Israel and widespread elation in the Palestinian territories, laying bare the chasm of perspective dividing the two sides. In Israel, the public is aghast at having to release convicted perpetrators of suicide bombings, deadly shootings and grisly kidnappings, although most understand that’s what it takes to win freedom for a soldier captured during a routine patrol inside Israel at age 19. tives have been reflected in reactions to the deal, in which Israel will free some 1,027 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for
Sgt. Gilad Schalit, captured by Gaza militants in a cross-border raid in June 2006. Following initial joy over the deal, Israelis have begun to ask questions about the lopsided price their government is paying. Many argue that militants who killed Israelis could return to armed activity. To address Israeli security concerns, Hamas agreed to have more than 200 West Bank-based prisoners deported to either the penned-in Gaza Strip or to a third country, where it would be much harder to carry out attacks. LOVE WHAT YOU DO
CONSIDER THESE POINTS BEFORE STARTING VENTURE
Small and medium-size businesses account for 99.8 per cent of all Canadian companies and employ more than 60 per cent of private sector workers. If you are thinking of launching a small business, here are 10 points to consider: CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE. You are going to spend countless hours starting and growing your business. It’s vital to love your work, whether it’s selling insurance, running a photography studio or cutting hair. SAVE MONEY FIRST. Don’t start your business just using loans from family, friends and banks; it can take years to turn a profit before you can repay them. Instead, save as much money as possible upfront, even if it extends your launch date. RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH. You will need to become an expert on your industry, products and services. To do so, join related industry or professional associations. DRAFT A BUSINESS PLAN. For most small businesses, the most important parts of this plan are the break-even analysis, a profit-and-loss forecast and a cash-flow projection. It also helps project start-up costs and marketing strategies. DON’T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB. If there is no conflict of interest and you can manage it, keep your full-time job while you lay the foundation of your business. You might as well enjoy getting regular paycheques and paid va-

cations as long as you can. FIND CLIENTS/CUSTOMERS FIRST. Start lining them up before you have officially launched. Network, offer a few free services or products — you can’t start marketing too soon. HIRE GOOD STAFF. Choose outstanding employees, then create a happy and stable workplace so they will want to perform well and stick around. EMBRACE SOCIAL MEDIA. At the very least, companies should have a website that describes who they are and their services and products. It’s becoming de rigueur for businesses to be on Facebook and Twitter, too. ADOPT A CAUSE. Consumers appreciate businesses that support good causes. Everyone wins: The customers; the charities; and the businesses. PAY YOUR BILLS AND TAXES ON TIME. In doing so, you will gain trust and build a positive credit profile. For small businesses, reputation is everything. – Jane Doucet

RIM facing uphill battle over tablets represents Waterloo, Ont., where RIM is based. Treasury Board president Tony Clement, an avid tech buff who uses both Apple and RIM products, is among those not writing off RIM, but acknowledges they have a fight on their hands. Unlike the BlackBerry, which is standard issue for MPs and staffers, there’s no government-wide standard on tablet computers. If MPs choose to get one, the make is up to them.
Gaining ground in the Apple-dominated tablet computer market has been akin to pushing a rock up a mountain for Research in Motion. And there’s a hill they’re at risk of dying on: Parliament Hill. Political Ottawa remains addicted to RIM’s signature BlackBerry smartphone, but when it comes to which tablet computers to adopt, Apple’s iPad is the favoured son. Conservative MP Peter Braid is one of the few, if not the only, MPs who use RIM’s Playbook instead. It’s an obvious choice, as Braid

WHAT ARE WE FIGHTING FOR? URBAN COMPASS
A common criticism of the Occupy Wall Street movement has been its apparent lack of a single, uniLIA GRAINGER fied goal. As Occupy Toronto METRO TORONTO set up camp in St. James Park Saturday afternoon, protesters followed New York’s lead, advocating for a wide range of causes. This freedom and inclusiveness, many said, was the point of the movement. And while the changes being championed were diverse, a common thread among nearly all in attendance was the call for a more equal and just society, and the desire to be heard. I spent the day asking protesters why they had decided to join the occupation. Here is what five of them said: “Just ask me about my student loan. It’s kind of like a game of Monopoly: Someone wins and everyone else loses.” – Liz Farge, 35, art-gallery employee. “I’m here because I have three sons. They’ve worked their entire lives for companies, without taking unemployment insurance, welfare or anything from the people. And yet they still can’t buy a house. There’s something wrong in a system when men work for 20 to 30 years and they can’t buy a house. It’s a fundamental right of Canadians.” – Shari Drinkwater, 65, retired journalist. “I’ve seen a lot of my friends — university-educated people — desperately looking for work for a long time now. People have gone $20,000 into student debt for nothing, for a job waiting tables.” – Eric Brauer, 30, ESL instructor. “I believe in the power of community. I think the way our society has gone, we’ve allowed the power of our decisions to be given to hierarchical structures that don’t reflect the majority of people. I think this movement is showing that we can, from a place of non-hierarchical consensus, create really powerful protests against the current system.” –- Lara Hollway, 24, student. “The library creates room and space so that, rather than just shout angrily, people can become informed about the more complex issues that are the stimuli of this entire movement.” – Orest Pazuniak, 22, student, and an organizer of the Occupy Toronto library.

Worth mentioning California’s largest industry group for doctors is calling for the legalization of marijuana even as it maintains that the drug has few proven health benefits. Trustees of the California Medical Association adopted the new stance at its annual meeting in Anaheim, according to a Los Angeles Times report. Dr. Donald Lyman, the physician who wrote the group’s new policy, said doctors are increasingly frustrated by the state’s medical marijuana law, which allows use with a doctor’s recommendation. Physicians are put in the uncomfortable position of having to decide whether to recommend a drug that’s illegal under federal law, Lyman said. “It is an open question whether cannabis is useful or not,” he told the newspaper. “That question can only be answered once it is legalized and more research is done.” The CMA acknowledges health risks associated with marijuana use and proposes regulation similar to alcohol and tobacco.

Back pain affects 80% of North Americans. It can also rob you of your happiness, where getting out of bed becomes a painful reminder of your bad back. Gaga does Marilyn Lady Gaga channels Marilyn Monroe at concert honouring Bill Clinton’s foundation GETTY IMAGES
Lady Gaga enjoyed her “first real Marilyn moment” with former President Bill Clinton. The envelope-pushing pop superstar was one of several musicians who performed Saturday night at the Hollywood Bowl during a concert celebrating the 10th anniversary of Clinton’s foundation, which has sought to improve global health, strengthen economies worldwide, promote healthier childhoods and protect the environment for the past decade. “I always wanted to have one, and I was hoping that it didn’t involve pills and a strand of pearls,” Gaga joked. Emerging from atop an all-white treehouse, Lady Gaga sported a wavy blonde ’do and red lips like Marilyn Monroe, who famously crooned Happy Birthday, Mr. President to President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Lady Gaga similarly serenaded Clinton and changed several of her lyrics to reference him, including swapping the title of Bad Romance for Bill Romance. “I thought, ‘My God. I get Lady Gaga, and I will have a heart attack celebrating my 65th birthday,’” Clinton later said. Clinton, who turned 65 on Aug. 19 but celebrated his birthday at a posh Hollywood party Friday night, sat between wife Hillary

presidential birthday party attended by both Lady Gaga and the Secretary of State,” Clinton joked on stage. “I want to thank Hillary because we met 40 years ago this year. When I met her, she was already doing the kind of work you see here long before it was cool.” Other performers included Motown legend Stevie Wonder, country star
Kenny Chesney, Toronto rapper K’Naan, Colombian crooner Juanes and R&B singer Usher. Usher kicked off his performance with a take on Joe Cocker’s rendition of the Beatles classic With a Little Help From My Friends before launching into his hits Yeah and OMG. The R&B singer accidently split his pant legs while
dancing to reveal his bare left leg. The wardrobe malfunction didn’t stop Usher, who continued with his routine, telling the crowd: “I work hard.” Bono and The Edge of U2 closed the concert with a mostly acoustic set that included such tunes as Desire, One and Sunday Bloody Sunday, which Bono sang directly to Clinton. The duo — who were accompanied by a string quartet and Edge’s laptop — closed with Miss Sarajevo. Bono tackled the operatic part of the tune originally sung by the late Luciano Pavarotti. Clinton himself is no stranger to performing. The saxophone-playing politician memorably belted out Heartbreak Hotel when he visited Arsenio Hall’s show during his 1992 presidential campaign. Clinton didn’t pick up the instrument Saturday night, despite a plea from Lady Gaga, who informed him: “I wish you were playing sax with me tonight, baby.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Just down the road from a tiny country church in rural Georgia, the apocalypse has already arrived. A band of scrappy survivors is fighting the undead, camping in the woods in hopes of outrunning the hordes of zombies roaming around. Few of them have made it, and at any moment they could be eaten alive and turned into one of the monsters that haunt them day and night. It’s just another day on the set of The Walking Dead, the hit AMC series that started its second season yesterday with 13 horrifying new episodes. Based on the popular comic book of the same

“The show is not about how gory we can make it,” said co-executive producer Greg Nicotero, the show’s special effects makeup guru who also directs this season. “We want it to be shocking. We want to remind the audience of the world we’re in — that world is brutal and savage and raw. But it’s also about survival.” As always, the show follows the first rule of the zombie genre: No one on the show has ever heard of a zombie, calling them “walkers” instead. They spend each episode learning the tricks of surviving the undead: avoiding loud nois-
es that will draw their attention, using rotting carcasses to mask the smell of the living and finding creative new ways to kill the monsters stalking them. Dead began six months of filming in and around Atlanta in June, boasting plots full of hair-raising new zombie encounters and heart-stopping action. The first season — which was just six episodes — ended with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta blowing up and leaving the group with little hope of finding a cure to the virus that creates the zombies.

Harry Potter, Pee Wee Herman and Darth Vader among honourees at Spike TV’s Scream Awards
Heroes and villains from the worlds of horror, fantasy and sci-fi shared the stage at Spike TV’s annual Scream Awards. More television event than traditional awards ceremony, the Scream Awards were presented in an amphitheatre built on the Universal Studios backlot just for the occasion. The Saturday night show was as much about how the awards were presented as who got them, but for starters, the top honourees were Harry Potter, Darth Vader, Nicolas Cage, Pee Wee Herman and Robert Downey, Jr. Resembling a psychedelic circus, one side of the stage was a life-sized dollhouse populated by costumed characters; the other a staircase topped by a giant keyhole, and in the middle was a lake that lit up with fire. Fans picked the night’s winners and also filled the makeshift theatre for the two and a half hour presentation, which is set to air tomorrow as a two-hour special on Spike TV and VH1. Potter took the night’s top prize. The eight-part film franchise was named the Ultimate Scream, which awards presenter Chloe Grace Moretz described as “the most awesome, most rocking thing that the universe has ever seen.” Audience members were given glow sticks before the winner was announced,
and when Potter star Daniel Radcliffe accepted the prize by video from New York, fans there were waving the same lights. Co-star Ralph Fiennes, who played Lord Voldemort, also appeared by video to accept an award for favourite villain. Vader, though, won the Ultimate Villain award. Star Wars creator George Lucas presented the Sith Lord with his prize. Vader, who accepted the award personally, said he’s found it difficult to concentrate on his work recently because he’s constantly “living in fear of how George Lucas is going to digitally enhance you for the next DVD.” Meanwhile, Lucas announced that the first Star

Launching from Rock, landing on air Alec Baldwin sets sights on radio show as role on hit comedy series approaches its end
Alec Baldwin
Alec Baldwin is preparing for life after 30 Rock, working with New York public radio on an interview show that will be available via podcast starting Oct. 24. The first interview post-
ed will be with actor Michael Douglas, who talks about watching Glee with his young daughter. Other interviews to follow will be with Republican campaign strategist Ed Rollins, reality-
show celebrity Kris Kardashian Jenner, comic Chris Rock, actress Kathleen Turner, author Erica Jong and veteran talk-show host Dick Cavett, station WNYC said Thursday.
Baldwin said that he’s been exploring other things to do, knowing that his small-screen life as crazed corporate executive Jack Donaghy is heading toward its end. Baldwin has won Emmys for his comic portrayal of a TV network boss. He said he likes to use his spare time to satisfy the need to do other things. His mixture of guests on the radio show will take in several fields, although he leans toward fellow entertainers. Baldwin said he’s particularly interested in talking with show-biz veterans about the directions their careers have taken and how they keep the juices flowing. He’s an admitted “public radio junkie” who has filled in on the air for New York’s WNYC and also helped with fund drives. After his on-air work as a substitute host for Kurt Andersen, both Baldwin and WNYC were interested in doing something more, said Dean Cappello, senior vicepresident for programming at New York public radio. “Alec is one of our hometown guys,” he said. New interviews will be available about once a week. Cappello said he expects they will eventually be made into an on-air radio show, but those plans

aren’t set yet. Baldwin said his 30 Rock contract ends after the upcoming sixth season, which will begin with Donaghy “in agony” because his wife is being held captive in North Korea. There’s a possibility the show might be extended another year, but he said he’s not sure whether he wants to do it. “I might,” he said. “I wouldn’t want to prevent them from having another year, because they’re all my friends and they’ve been good to me. Maybe I would do a piece of the year. But I really do want to move on to other things.” Still, no one appreciates the run he’s been on better than Baldwin. “The life I have now is not going to get any better,” he said. “I have a great job. Everybody thinks I’m funny. I’m fooling everybody. They think I’m talented. I’m pulling the wool over everybody’s eyes and they’re paying me for it. It’s thrilling.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Black and White a splash of colour The new album from Lenny Kravitz tackles race in America Lots of big names featured on his 9th CD Lenny Kravitz, who was born to a black mother and white father, didn’t recognize skin colour in his own home as a child. “I grew up in a house full of every colour,” he recalls. Things changed when he went to elementary school. “I didn’t know anything about problems until I went to first grade and it was brought to my attention,” the rock singer and guitarist said. “I knew my father looked different than my mother, but I didn’t know that that meant anything. ... I had no idea that it was an issue.” On his latest album, Black and White America, 47-year-old Kravitz tackles that “issue” as well as what his parents experienced as an interracial couple in 1960s New York. Grammy-winning OutKast rapper Big Boi has reached a deal on Florida drug charges that allows him to avoid jail time. Sue Rainville, director of marketing for window fashions manufacturer Hunter Douglas, offers tips to make your home safe. • Use window guards on all windows above the first floor. Screens aren’t strong enough to stop falls. • To keep windows open for ventilation, install locks that limit the opening’s size. • For sliding glass doors, apply bright stickers to alert kids to the presence of glass.

Thumb sucking is a natural behaviour. Children have been observed thumb sucking in the womb. Pacifier proponents
your baby becomes dependent on it, you’ll be up throughout the night to pop it back in. Later, it becomes a barrier to speech. So while this sanity-saver seems like a good option, NNS can have implications for growth. “The greater the amount of time during the day that the child engages in non-nutritive sucking, the greater the forces that the growing bones and associated soft tissues will be exposed to,” explains Dr. Sarah Hulland, a paediatric
believe keeping your baby calm when he or she is crying for no reason is better for psychological wellbeing. There are genuine positives: Pacifier use is believed to reduce the prevalence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. You can also control when your baby uses it (which you can’t do with a thumb) and when it’s time to end nonnutritive sucking (NNS) — as it’s termed — a pacifier can be thrown out. But getting kids to stop can be tricky. “The easiest way to stop pacifier sucking is to keep soother-access to essential-use only,” explains Hulland. “And for thumb suckers, remove thumb from a child’s mouth or replace it with an alternative comforter.”

Let the money rain down ISTOCK PHOTOS
Turn your humble rain barrel into a cash saving device Conserving your water has never been easier BEN KNIGHT
LIFE@METRONEWS.CA
Drip by drip, drop by drop, water is getting more expensive. It’s tempting to wonder, sometimes, why we are paying so much for something that regularly falls out of the sky for free. Not that purification, pumps and infrastructure aren’t hugely important. But aren’t there ways to use all that water that simply hits your house anyway? Yes, and so we turn to the humble rain barrel. “Catching rain water for your garden is fun,” says Bob Burgess, princi-
pal of Gulf Islands Rainwater Connection Ltd. on Thetis Island, B.C. “And it gives you the best possible water for your garden.” A simple, low-tech device can fill up 10 to 15 times in a typical Canadian year. The water’s not drinkable, but it’s cheaper — and cleaner — for lawns, gardens and plants than the more expensive treated water that gushes from your hose or sprinkler. And if you feel like investing in a more complex system, rain water can also be used indoors. “The building code — now — allows it to be

used for toilets without purification,” Burgess says. “That’s a nice way to save money — and water — 12 months a year.”
That requires a tank, underground in most of Canada, where it can be protected from freezing. “The underground tanks are more expensive.
You’re probably spending $2,000 on the tank, and another $1,000 on the pump. By and large, you’re looking at more like $4,000 to $5,000. And
that depends on how easy it is. If it’s a brand new house, it would be really easy.” Potable water systems are available, converting rain into drinking water. But they run in the $25,000 to $35,000 cost range — far more than most Canadians would ever be willing to spend. But there’s an easier, cheaper side to this. Just the simple act of putting a rain barrel under your downspout heightens awareness of water conservation, making it easier to find other effective, every-day ways of cutting consumption. “That’s exactly the idea of the rain barrel, is that it gets people interested,” Burgess says. “Here’s a line: It’s raining, it’s pouring, the wise man is storing.”

Cardinals headed to Series St. Louis bullpen bottles up Brewers, earning team a chance to play Rangers for title

An afterthought in early September, the St. Louis Cardinals are taking their wild ride all the way to the World Series. David Freese hit a three-run homer in the first and manager Tony La Russa turned again to his brilliant bullpen for seven sturdy innings as St. Louis captured its 18th pennant with a 12-6 victory over the bumbling Milwaukee Brewers last night. Albert Pujols and the wild-card Cardinals took out the heavily favoured Phillies in the first round, then dispatched the division-rival Brewers on their own turf in Game 6 of the NL championship series. Looking for its second title in six seasons, St. Louis opens the World Series at home Wednesday night with ace Chris Carpenter on the mound against the AL champion Texas Rangers. Trailing by 101⁄2 games in the wild-card race on Aug. 25, the Cardinals surged down the stretch and took advantage of a monumental collapse by Atlanta to win a playoff spot on the final night of the regular season. Now, bolstered by a

group of no-name relievers who keep answering La Russa’s call, the Cardinals are back in the World Series for the first time since beating Detroit in 2006. What a relief ! It was a disappointing end to a scintillating season for Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun and the NL Central champion Brewers, who finished with a franchise-record 96 wins, six games ahead of St. Louis. Baseball’s best home
team collapsed in the NLCS, though, losing twice at Miller Park in an error-filled flop. It was likely Fielder’s final game with the Brewers, too. He’s a free agent after the season. Rafael Furcal and Pujols hit solo homers off Chris Narveson and St. Louis built a 9-4 lead by the time the bullpen took over for Edwin Jackson in the third inning. The group of Fernando Salas, Marc Rzepczynski, Octavio Dotel, Lance Lynn
and Jason Motte allowed two runs the rest of the way. For the series, St. Louis relievers finished 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA over 282⁄3 innings. The biggest scare came when Pujols appeared shaken up after tagging out Braun in the fifth inning when he fell hard on his right forearm on a close play at first base. The three-time MVP was slow to get up, but stayed in the game. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Unfamiliar foes The last time the Rangers and Cardinals faced off was in a 2004 interleague series in Texas. Even in this era of interleague play, that’s the only time the Cardinals and Rangers have met when it meant something. According to STATS LLC, that matches the fewest games between a pair of opponents in the majors, tying the Mets-White Sox.

New York running back Bradshaw burns Buffalo for three touchdowns For a change, the New York Giants didn’t have to rely solely on Eli Manning’s arm. They are heading into the bye week with hope, now that they’ve found a running game. Ahmad Bradshaw ran for a season-high 104 yards and a career-best three touchdowns and Lawrence Tynes kicked a go-ahead 23-yard field goal with 1:32 remaining to give the New York Giants a 27-24 victory over the
Buffalo Bills yesterday. The win puts the Giants (4-2) in first place in the NFC East. “This is a huge win for us,” guard David Diehl said. “Coming into this game, we had a lot of things on our minds, with No. 1 being getting the run game going.” Ryan Fitzpatrick was 21of-30 for 244 yards with touchdown passes of 60 yards to Naaman Roosevelt
“This is one of the hardest parts of playing quarterback, when you don’t get the job done.” BILLS QB RYAN FITZPATRICK
and nine yards to Stevie Johnson. However, the Bills (4-2) quarterback had two turnovers and his final attempt was batted down by New York’s Jason PierrePaul on a fourth-and-five to end Buffalo’s chances. Fred Jackson had another monster game for the Bills, rushing for 121 yards, including a career-high 80yard TD run. He also caught five passes for 47 yards.

Crabb makes case for Leafs to call him up from Marlies
Joey Crabb is making an early season push to get back up in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ lineup. Crabb scored twice and Jussi Rynnas made 21 saves in his first start of the season yesterday as the Toronto Marlies shut out the Lake Erie Monsters 4-0 in the American Hockey League. After being cut from the big club during training
camp, Crabb has gotten off to a quick start with the Marlies. The Anchorage, Alaska, native has three goals and seven points in four games to start the 2011-12 season. Crabb is tied now with Joe Colborne, who had an assist, for the Marlies’ scoring lead. Jeff Finger and Jerry D’Amigo had the other

season. Lake Erie is winless in four games. Crabb played 48 games with the Leafs last season, scoring three goals and adding 12 assists, and fit in well defensively in mostly third- and fourth-line duty. But he didn’t make the Leafs to start the season and was sent down to the Marlies after clearing waivers.
goals for Toronto, while Mike Zigomanis added a pair of assists. James Reid made 23 saves in the loss for the Monsters. The Marlies swept backto-back games from the Monsters over the weekend after winning 5-3 on Saturday. That runs their record to 3-1-0 to start the 2011-12
