Union slams drug screen TTC workers to undergo random breath and saliva tests ‘It’s standard, it’s safe and it’s proven technology’: Ontario Safety League president Execs agree to testing protocol, too About half the TTC’s workforce — from drivers and supervisors to track-level maintenance workers — will soon be subject to random drug and alcohol testing. City councillors on the Toronto Transit Commission approved the measure yesterday, as a deterrent to substance abuse on the job that they believe will improve public safety. The move comes despite harsh

objections by the transit workers’ union, which is accusing the TTC of violating employees’ right to privacy by enforcing random breath and saliva tests. The decision will make the TTC the first transit agency in Canada — except some cross-border bus companies — to conduct broad, random screening. Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 president Bob Kinnear threatened legal action and accused the TTC of misleading the public. “The testing they’re proposing will not determine impairment. Teacher, pupils can be ‘friends’: Cop

KATE ALLEN/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Facebook can — and should — be a teacher’s friend, the Toronto police social media officer told an educators’ conference. The social networking site can be used for mentoring, building relationships and can help prevent teen suicides, gang activity and even crimes, Const. Scott Mills told more than 100 teachers, principals

and social workers at a Canadian Safe School Network conference held yesterday in Toronto. “We stopped a Virginia Tech type shooting here in this city,” he said. In September 2009, an elementary teacher noticed anti-Semitic postings threatening mass shootings of Jewish students through her Facebook con-

nections. She reported it and someone was arrested. Mills said that instead of blocking social media use, boards would be better off training teachers and then monitoring their use. Earlier this year, the Ontario College of Teachers recommended teachers not “friend” students on Facebook or text them.

Man faces four murder raps

YOUTUBE SCREENGRAB

‘Evil man’ slapped with more than 50 firearms-related charges 3 described as innocent victims Toronto police can’t remember one man being responsible for four serial murders in the city, but they are accusing Mark Garfield Moore of just that. Moore, 27, was arrested yesterday and charged with 54 offences, including four shooting murders that police described as premeditated and callous. Moore is also accused of several drive-by shootings and a jewelry store robbery in which an employee was shot and wounded. “The families of the victims described him best this morning. If these allegations are proven in court, he is an evil man,” Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga said at a news conference. Several family members attended the news conference, but they did not speak to the media.

The victims Jahmeel Spence was killed Sept. 10, 2010. It’s believed he was mistaken for someone else. In a double homicide on Sept. 29, 2010, Courthney Facey and Mike James were gunned down. Police say there was not “rhyme or reason” for the shooting. On Nov. 24, Carl Cole was shot after an alleged dispute.

Police aren’t sure of the motivations for the murders. Moore was well known to police and had been in the Don Jail on other charges since March when he was arrested on the homicide cases. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

COLIN MCCONNELL/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

A doctor who pleaded guilty to stalking superstar Shania Twain has been denied bail while arguments continue about his sentencing. Giovanni (John) Palumbo’s lawyer proposed release without supervision to his last known address, the Fairmont Royal York hotel in Toronto. Palumbo, who had been absent throughout most of

yesterday’s hearing, appeared near the end and asked if he could instead be released to his family home in Ottawa. The judge denied the request, saying some degree of supervision was necessary, prompting an outburst from Palumbo. “You know, you’re all very sick,” he said. “You’re not going to make me schizophrenic. You’re not

going to make me crazy.” Palumbo, 51, submitted surprise guilty pleas on Sept. 30, the second day of his trial, to charges of criminal harassment and to breaching a court order. He was arrested March 27 at the Air Canada Centre, where Twain was attending the Juno Awards. His sentencing hearing resumes Nov. 15. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Jay-Z performs onstage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival at the MGM Grand Garden Arena last month in Las Vegas. Can some of his and other rappers’ songs be considered advertising?

Brands mentioned most often were Patrón Téquila, Grey Goose Vodka, Hennessy Cognac, Cristal Champagne If a rapper rhymes about Patrón Téquila, is it advertising? That’s the question being raised by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in a study released today in the journal Addiction. The researchers parsed 793 songs on Billboard Magazine’s top 100 lists from 2005-2007 and found that 21.3 per cent of them referred explicitly to alcohol and of those, 24.3 per cent referred to alcohol by brand. “Brand appearances are important to assess because they may function as advertising, whether or not they are paid for or sanctioned by the alcohol industry,” according to the researchers, led by Dr. Brian Primack, an assistant professor at the

In 2008, Snoop Dogg became the face of Landy Cognac, featuring it in his single Luv Drunk. In 2010, 50 Cent and Tony Yayo collaborated on the single Pass the Patrón.

The City of Toronto holds public consultations as one way to engage residents in the life of their city. Toronto thrives on your great ideas and actions. We invite you to get involved.

Changes to Front Street at Union Station Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Public Information Centre #2 We invite you to drop in to view project materials and speak oneon-one with the project team at this Public Information Centre:

Date: Thursday, November 3, 2011 Time: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Location: Metro Hall, 55 John St. Room 309 Background Union Station is the busiest transportation hub in Canada, serving upwards of 200,000 passengers every business day. As GO Transit expands, this number is expected to double in the next 10-15 years. To accommodate the additional pedestrian traffic crossing Front Street and to enhance the historic Station’s civic setting, the City of Toronto is studying options to reconfigure Front Street West from Bay Street to York Street. Proposed New Design This second Public Information Centre will present the Preliminary Preferred Design, which includes: • A grand civic plaza with new lighting, additional seating and granite pavement treatment • A “table top” mid-block pedestrian crossing spanning the width of the plaza • Significant sidewalk expansion with wider crosswalks at intersections and minimized crossing distances • Modified lay-by-taxi, bus and private vehicle parking arrangements on both sides of the street • Vehicle lanes reduced from two typical travel lanes in each direction to one wider travel lane in each direction The Process The study is being carried out as a Schedule C Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA), which includes identifying the problem/opportunity to be addressed, developing and evaluating a reasonable range of alternative solutions, and providing opportunities for public input at key stages. We would like to hear from you. Public consultation is an important part of this study. If you would like more information, please contact: Jason Diceman Public Consultation Coordinator City of Toronto Metro Hall, 19th Fl., 55 John St. Toronto, ON M5V 3C6

The top court ruled yesterday against Wayne Crookes, a former Green party campaign manager who argued that posting links to sites with defamatory statements was the same as publishing the defamatory material. The website in question did not reproduce any of the disputed material, nor did it comment on it. The Supreme Court said there is a difference between simply linking to a website and actively encouraging someone to fol-

low a link to a website with defamatory content. “Only when a hyperlinker presents content from the hyperlinked material in a way that actually repeats the defamatory content, should that content be considered to be ‘published’ by the hyperlinker,” the court wrote. “Such an approach promotes expression and respects the realities of the Internet, while creating little or no limitations to a plaintiff’s ability to vindicate his or her reputation.” “The ruling is a huge win for the Internet,” said Michael Geist, a University of Ottawa law professor. “The Supreme Court of Canada clearly understood the technology, I think they understand the Internet.

Wayne Crookes, former Green party campaign manager, launched several libel actions against members of the Green Party of Canada, Myspace.com and Wikipedia. There were concerns that siding with Crookes would have a chilling effect on the web.

They, most importantly in this case, understand the direct link — no pun intended — between hyperlinks on the Internet and freedom of expression and the ability to disseminate information.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Mass rallies in Greece erupt into violence

Health workers chant slogans yesterday outside the Greek parliament in Syntagma Square, Athens. Violence marred huge demonstrations in Greece as unions launched a two-day general strike to protest a new bill tightening the financial screws in a bid to stave off bankruptcy.

Dentists, doctors and lawyers join shop owners and dock workers in general strike yesterday Some 3,000 police deployed in central Athens Hundreds of rioting youth smashed and looted stores in central Athens yesterday during an anti-government strike against painful new austerity measures. Outside parliament, demonstrators hurled chunks of marble and gasoline bombs at riot police, who responded with tear gas and stun grenades. Police said at least 14 officers were hospitalized with injuries. At least three journalists covering the demonstrations sustained minor injuries. The violence spread across the city centre, as at least 100,000 people marched through the Greek capital on the first

day of a two-day general strike that unions described as the largest protest in years. Police and rioters held running battles through the narrow streets, as thick black smoke billowed from burning garbage and bus stops. The strike came before a parliamentary vote yesterday on new tax increases and spending cuts. But citizens at the protest said they already are reeling from more than one-and-a-half years of austerity measures. “We just can’t take it any more. There is desperation, anger and bitterness,” said Nikos Anastasopoulos,

head of a workers’ union for an Athens municipality. Other municipal workers said they had no option but to take to the streets. “We can’t make ends meet for our families,” said protester Eleni Voulieri. “We’ve lost our salaries, we’ve lost everything and we’re in danger of losing our jobs.”

“We have to explain to all these indignant people who see their lives changing that what the country is experiencing is not the worst stage of the crisis. It is an anguished and necessary effort to avoid the ultimate, deepest and harshest level of the crisis.” FINANCE MINISTER EVANGELOS VENIZELOS

Greek MPs vote for austerity A new austerity bill that will dig deep into Greek pockets has been granted initial approval. Greek parliamentarians voted 154-141 in favour of the bill late yesterday. A second vote will be held today in the 300-seat Parliament, after which the bill will be passed into law. The measures include new tax hikes, further pension and salary cuts, temporary layoffs of 30,000 public servants and the suspension of collective labour contracts. Creditors have demanded the measures before they give Greece more funds from a bailout loan of $152.11 billion US from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund. Greece says it will run out of money in mid-November without the $11-billion US instalment. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Police ‘have come in and started a riot’: Traveller

By the afternoon police said they were in control of the site, and that bailiffs were beginning to move onto the disputed property. Police moved protesters away and later used a cherry picker to reach the scaffolding platform and remove protesters who had chained themselves to the structure. “I’ve been through a lot of evictions, but I’ve never seen anything like this ... they have come in and started a riot that we never wanted,” said resident Kathleen McCarthy, who accused police of roughing up Travellers at the site, injuring three women. “We are being dragged out of the only homes we have in this world.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

his victims but also boasted of killing others. The photographs, which were recently posted on the FBI’s website, will be tweeted and reposted on Facebook — tools that have

helped solve other cold cases, Fisher said. “We hope, however way it can happen, that these images do get to families and friends of loved ones who are missing,” said Fish-

British official steps down amid spy scandal ANTHONY DEVLIN/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

26-year-old worked as lawmaker’s research assistant for more than 2 years Ekaterina Zatuliveter arrives for an immigration hearing in London yesterday.

U.K. lobbyist scandal prompts rule changes Swapping contact cards over canapes, cozy chats at lavish lunches — in the wake of a scandal over a defence minister who offered his friend access to overseas visits and meetings, Britain is tightening rules on those who seek to win influence over lawmakers. Liam Fox stepped down as defence secretary on Friday amid scrutiny of the role of Adam Werritty, a close friend who had posed as an aide, arranged private meetings and held talks with foreign dignitaries on at least 18 trips overseas. Werritty, a former defence lobbyist and the best man at Fox’s 2005 wedding, had no official government position but was a constant presence at the minister’s side — leaving some overseas governments convinced he was an aide. The fact he was funded by a circle of businessmen, some of whom had ties to Sri Lanka or promoted links between Israel and Britain, has

raised questions over what the public should know about those who mingle with ministers. A government inquiry published Monday found Werritty was not employed as a lobbyist, and said that both he and Fox had insisted he had not used his access to advance his clients’ interests. But it also urged the government to press ahead with a planned register of lobbyists and said ministry aides must do more to keep a check on those seeking to influence ministers over contracts or policy. The British lawmaker allegedly ensnared in a Russian intelligence operation announced yesterday that he was stepping down from the House of Commons’ Defence Committee. Ekaterina Zatuliveter, 26,

is accused of using her position to pass sensitive information to Russian intelligence. She has not been charged with any crime, but the U.K. is seeking to expel her from the country on national security grounds.

On Tuesday, Zatuliveter said she carried out a lengthy affair with the 65year-old married lawmaker but denied a lawyer’s claim that she served as Russian intelligence’s “eyes and ears in the Houses of Parliament.”

Mike Hancock denies passing Zatuliveter any classified information but said he was stepping down from the committee so that it could “continue with its work unimpaired by current events.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The siren’s wail at the historic Metropole Hotel sent American folk singer Joan Baez and other guests scampering across a garden and into an underground bunker. Even through 1.5 metres of concrete, they could still hear the roar of American bombs raining on parts of Hanoi. Nearly four decades have passed since the so-called Christmas Bombings rocked parts of Vietnam’s capital in December 1972. After the war ended three years later, the bunker was sealed and all but forgotten. Its exact location remained a mystery until this summer, when a worker’s drill pierced its concrete roof during renovations of a poolside bar. Since then, workers have been excavating the flooded and low-ceilinged space. Not much has been found in the seven rooms: a wine bottle, a rusty paint can

and a light bulb still in a socket. But a few tales remain, some involving famous guests. The North Vietnamese government used the French colonial-era hotel, a stately four-storey building in the shadow of Hanoi’s Opera House, to house foreign guests during the war. Nguyen Thi Xuan Phuong, now 82, remembers staying in the bunker during the Christmas Bombings with anti-war activist Baez. On one of the 12 nights that B-52s pounded areas around the city, the lights went out, prompting a few foreigners to scream in the darkness. “Can you sing a song? Phuong asked the young singer. “We may not change the situation, but your songs may help calm people down. When Baez’s voice rang out as someone plucked a guitar, the bunker was revitalized, Phuong recalls. Others who sheltered there included war correspondents and American actress Jane Fonda, says Phuong, who worked for the government as a doctor assisting foreign guests. Fonda’s visit to enemy territory ignited fury at home. She criticized U.S. policy on North Vietnamese radio and earned the nickname “Hanoi Jane after posing for a photo atop an anti-aircraft gun — an incident Fonda later said she regretted. Ohio police shoot freed zoo animals TONY DEJAK/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Game preserve had Bengal tigers, lions, cheetahs, wolves, giraffes, camels and grizzly bears Cages opened, farm’s fences left unsecured Sheriff’s deputies shot nearly 50 wild animals — including 18 rare Bengal tigers and 17 lions — in a big-game hunt yesterday after the owner of an exoticanimal park threw open their cages and committed suicide in what may have been a last act of spite against neighbours. As homeowners nerv-

ously hid indoors, officers armed with high-powered rifles and shoot-to-kill orders fanned out through fields and woods to hunt down about 56 animals that had been set loose from the Muskingum County Animal Farm by its owner, Terry Thompson, before he shot himself to death Tuesday. After an all-night hunt

that extended into yesterday afternoon, 48 animals were killed. Six others — three leopards, a grizzly bear and two monkeys — were captured and taken to the Columbus Zoo. A wolf was later found dead, leaving a monkey as the only animal still on the loose. Those destroyed included six black bears, two griz-

zlies, a baboon and three mountain lions. Jack Hanna, TV personality and former director of the Columbus Zoo, defended the sheriff’s decision to kill the animals, but said the deaths of the Bengal tigers were especially tragic. There are only about 1,400 left in the world, he said. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

A sign warning motorists that exotic animals were on the loose rests on the I-70 yesterday near Zanesville, Ohio.

Apple Inc.’s famous penchant for secrecy remained intact yesterday as the company’s retail stores were curtained and employees were close-lipped about a private memorial service to celebrate the life of co-founder Steve Jobs. The service, announced to Apple employees in an email by CEO Tim Cook, took place yesterday morning at company headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. It was also webcast to employees worldwide. At stores across Northern California, white curtains were draped across the windows to block the view from outside. Near the campus before services started, sheriff’s deputies directed traffic and employees streamed toward the company’s outdoor amphitheatre. Media handlers kept reporters

from getting too close. Music drifted across the campus from the service, and employees leaving the service who wouldn’t give their names said singer Norah Jones and the British rock band Coldplay

performed live. At the end of the service, employees said Coldplay front man Chris Martin told everyone to get back to work because that’s what Steve Jobs would have wanted. The mood at the service

was festive, not sombre, employees said. Speakers reportedly included former U.S. vice-president Al Gore, who reminisced about his experiences with Steve Jobs and Apple. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Canadian Tire has unveiled its first automotivecentric store as part of a strategy to refocus on the products that helped make it a household name. The new store, in Bowmanville, Ont., will draw attention to its auto parts and accessories. Canadian Tire is attempting to over-

come sluggish retail sales after spending years trying to brand itself as a general goods retailer. The retailer hopes to grow the auto division by four to six per cent by 2015 and regain its reputation as a national authority on all things automotive. THE CANADIAN PRESS

A Facebook scam promising users a free Tim Hortons gift card was taken down by the social network behemoth.

Coffee scam jolts java lovers Coffee lovers across North America beware: If someone offers you a free cup of java on Facebook, it’s probably too good to be true. A scam popped up on Facebook over the weekend promising users a free Tim Hortons gift card if they liked a page and shared it with their friends. Users were then

asked to provide their email address and other sensitive personal information. The scam branched out to Starbucks fans, with a page purportedly offering free gift cards to celebrate the Seattle coffee giant’s 40th anniversary. Thousands of people shared the pages before

they were removed by Facebook. Free voucher scams are a standard formula for fraudsters gunning for people’s personal information. The scam also spread via email, with some version of the Tim Hortons scam offering $25 gift cards, supposedly to celebrate the chain’s 25th an-

niversary. Tim Hortons was founded in 1964, making it 47 years old. The Timmies scam also asked users to write a note of thanks on the page’s wall. The suggested phrase includes a valiant yet failed attempt at Canadian spelling: “Free Coffee and Donughts, Thanks.” TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Maple Leaf Foods is cutting 1,550 jobs, closing plants in four provinces and streamlining distribution. The Toronto-based maker of processed meats and other foods will close processing plants in Kitchener, Hamilton and Toronto in Ontario; in North Battleford, Sask.; Moncton, N.B. and a small plant in Winnipeg by the end of 2014. The company said the plan will create 1,150 new jobs but the associated plant closures will more than offset that, resulting in a net loss of 1,550 positions from among its 21,000 employees. Maple Leaf said it will build a new preparedmeats plant in Hamilton,

and will also invest in plants in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Brampton. The company will also close distribution centres in Moncton, N.B., Burling-

photo of the day Letters Taking advantage of parking permits, published Oct.19 You are correct in your assessment of the cost to the cash-strapped city of Toronto of ‘accessibility permits’ being used fraudulently on a daily basis in Toronto. Just one example: On any given day on the north side of Danforth Avenue between Coxwell and Woodbine, at least a dozen parked vehicles can be counted with these ‘blue permits’ visible on the dash. Some are SUVs and new pickup trucks. Undoubtedly some are legitimate, but seen emerging from and entering these vehicles are able-bodied men without canes, crutches or wheelchairs on their way to and from coffeeshops and other businesses. Additionally there would appear to be no time limit for ‘permit’ parking, eliminating space for paying customers. If ‘permit’ parking here is multiplied by all the other neighbourhoods in the city then this represents a staggering loss of revenue to Toronto. MURRAY LUMLEY TORONTO

At odds with modernity Bharati: The Wonder that is India starts Oct. 26 at the Sony Centre for Performing Arts The musical, written for foreign audiences, is an insight into culture and community

CHRISTOPHE MOURTHÉ

It’s rare that an actress leaves a burgeoning film career for the theatre and even rarer in a country like India, where Bollywood and film reign supreme. Yet that’s exactly what Bhavna Pani did nine years ago. “For me, the high of being a performer is being on stage,” she says, “the knot in your stomach, the elephant size butterflies.” Her decision yielded some impressive results when she was cast as the lead in Bharati, which premiers in Toronto next week. Described as “a film on stage,” the titular main

Legendary Canadian singersongwriter Paul Anka and former Oasis rocker Liam Gallagher will appear on Cover Me Canada this Sunday. CBC-TV says Anka will be a special guest judge as the four finalists sing the Ottawa native’s time-honoured tunes.

Bharati: the Wonder that is India opens on Oct. 26.

Not like North America Who are they? Unlike North America, where stage and screen more or less share stature amongst both actors and audience, theatre is basically out of reach to most of India. “It’s the crème de la crème who go watch theatre,” says Pani, relegating it to a small niche in the Bollywood crazy country.

character has to choose between the man she’s fallen in love with and the approval of her father. The story is also a metaphor for India, says Pani, with her lover representing modernity at odds with the traditionalism of her father. The musical was written with foreign audiences in mind and synthesizes the

myriad cultures of India onto the stage. “You get information, and insight into the culture,” says Pani. “With a lot of singing and dancing in between and a happy ending.” Pani was the first person cast for the production six years ago when it started making its way across Europe, with Pani performing to 5,000 people a

night six to eight months out of the year. There are 16 dance numbers in the production and Pani is involved in 13 and a half of them. And unlike a Bollywood film, there’s not director yelling “cut” if someone screws up. “Even my number of breaths between one song and another is calculated.” But its that rush of ener-

gy that she has to channel to the audience night after night that keeps things interesting. “You know its do or die with no retakes. That’s the challenge as a performer.” Bharati: the Wonder that is India plays from Oct 26 to Nov 6 at the Sony Centre of the Performing Arts, 1 Front St. East; $55.75 to $107.50.

Boob, James boob Rowan Atkinson reprises role as bumbling MI5 agent Johnny English

METRO WORLD NEWS IN HOLLYWOOD

Rowan Atkinson, the venerable British comic actor, is known as much for his bumbling, near-silent Mr. Bean as he is for the witheringly sarcastic Black Adder. He returns to cinemas this year with another of his characters, the blundering, very un-Bond-like British spy Johnny English. Bolstered by a surprising second life on DVD for the first film as well as Daniel Craig’s revitalization of the franchise it mocks, Atkinson is hoping his spy has staying power. And if overseas box office receipts are any indication, it does. The film has already had some impressive success around the world.

Yes, thank you. When you hear you’re the No. 1 movie in Malaysia and Hong Kong and Indonesia and all these other places you think, Well that’s curious. You know, these cultures about which I know absolutely nothing. Isn’t it interesting that they can latch onto something like Johnny English Reborn and embrace it with as much enthusiasm as a British person would? Or Russia. I went to Moscow for a premiere there. That was fascinating — partly in fact from watching myself dubbed into Russian. I thought I sounded slightly effeminate, but maybe

One of the biggest laughs in Johnny English Reborn is also one of the simplest. During a tense briefing with the prime minister, Atkinson fails to control the raising and lowering of his office chair.

Rowan Atkinson likens — but just a bit — Johnny English to the sillier James Bond movies from a decade ago.

that’s how they see the British. It’s probably some kind of Russian subtext. “Make sure the Brit looks a bit effete.” Given the success of Mr. Bean and Johnny English, do you find people expect you to be a bit more dimwitted in real life?

Dimwitted? I’m not aware of that (laughs). Maybe I disappoint them — either by not being dimwitted enough or being more dimwitted than they thought I was going to be. Sometimes you get a sense of expectation of comedy, of a comic persona. When they discover that you’re not Mr. Bean or anything like him, or even quite different — I hope — from Johnny English, as long as

you can be polite and engaging, they might excuse you. Where did the idea of revisiting Johnny English come from?

When the first Johnny English movie came out, people thought it was a bit cheap and cheerful. A “yeah, OK, three good jokes but then what?” sort of thing. And then it rather bizarrely established this reputation as a kind of DVD movie that children in particular can watch over and over and over again. The second re-exploitation, as they say; the TV screenings and the DVD sales. And that’s where Johnny English did surprisingly well. And I guess that was a lot of the justification for making

“There are a number of things at play there,” Atkinson says. “One is the simple contrast, really, between a very serious meeting between the prime minister and his intelligence advisors — including Johnny English — and the ludicrous ineptitude of someone who’s not controlling their pneumatic chair. And yet no one seems to stop the meeting and say, ‘Would you stop playing with that chair!’”

a sequel, from a commercial point of view. And Bond has been having a resurgence.

Yes, exactly. What’s good, actually, about the Daniel Craig thing is not only is he good in the part but because they decided — I’m sure, quite rightly — to move it into a more serious vein, it kind of opened up the field a bit for us. Johnny English Reborn is probably a little more — although only a little — like a James Bond movie of 10 or 15 years ago, when you had more fun with it and more silly jokes.

Hollywood has signed up its first female director for a major superhero movie. Marvel Studios announced Thursday that Patty Jenkins will direct Thor 2, the sequel to last summer’s hit that is due in theatres Nov. 15, 2013. Jenkins is best-known for writing and directing 2003’s Monster, which earned Charlize Theron the best-actress Academy Award. Her credits also include episodes of Entourage and Arrested Development. Chris Hemsworth will reprise his title role in Thor 2 as the Norse god of thunder, with co-stars Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston also returning. The first Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh, took in $448 million worldwide.

Thor 2 will be the first major superhero movie to be directed by a woman.

Another female filmmaker, Lexi Alexander, made the lower-budgeted Marvel movie The Punisher: War Zone in 2008. But Jenkins is the first woman to direct a blockbuster superhero franchise. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Auctioning off outfits Bette Midler selling off iconic items to benefit her charity It wasn’t long ago that Bette Midler blasted Lady Gaga on Twitter for appearing in a costume that was similar to Midler’s famous mermaid-in-awheelchair get-up. Now the Divine Miss M is extending an olive branch by suggesting Gaga buy some of her originals. “I think she should go for a real wheelchair and a

real fishtail because these are really beautiful. They are decorated and handbeaded,” Midler said in an interview Tuesday. “If she is interested, she can have whatever she wants because she is a very talented girl and I love her a lot.” Gaga and the rest of the world will soon be able to bid on that costume and more, as Midler is selling

You get to a certain point in life and you say, ‘Do I really want my daughter to have to deal with this when I am gone?’ It is just so massive and you don’t. You really don't. You want people to have

the joy of it while you are still alive.

You are selling the iconic mermaid costume?

What are some of the items that you could not part with?

Not just one. Some of my best ones are up for auction, and some of my chorus girls are up for auction, and I am waiting for Gaga to get in there and grab hers. Some of the wheelchairs are up for auction. I mean, there is a selection from everything.

Bette Midler is parting with some iconic items to benefit her charity.

Questions A few more questions for Midler What if Gaga buys your entire collection? I would be thrilled. I hope she buys at least a little bit. It would be fun. There are so many wonderful ideas and so much of it. So much of it is so funny. Do you look back on some of this and think, I can’t believe I wore that? You can say I can’t believe I dressed up as a fish. You can say that. You can say I can’t believe I came out in

a pair of knickers that were up to my neck. I can’t believe I wore a pair of pants up to my neck. You can say that about practically everything. But, I remember it all so fondly. It was a great ride. Just the best ride, just the most fun. How did you decide what to auction? Some of the stuff is so well known and iconic, they kind of cherrypicked what they thought was the stuff that the fans and interested parties would respond to the most, and that is what they chose.

In the years since Duff McKagan left Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver behind, he has emerged as something of a renaissance man. He writes about sports for ESPN.com, has his own wealth management company, Merdian Rock, for musicians, and now is an author with the book, It’s So Easy (and Other Lies). And he still rocks out with his group Loaded. The book takes its name from a Guns N’ Roses song, and details McKagan’s triumphs and struggles. The Seattle-born rocker rose to fame in the late 1980s with Guns N’ Roses, but would eventually become addicted to drugs and alcohol, until an epiphany one day changed McKagan’s life. The title of the book is It’s So Easy, and yet it hasn’t been so easy. What made it hard?

McBride gets makeover DONN JONES/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Country star switches label, tackles writing her own songs Martina McBride was looking for that spark you get when you know you’ve discovered your true match. The country music star found it in Scott Borchetta and his Big Machine Label Group. McBride’s new album, Eleven, is her first for Republic Nashville, ending a two-decade association with RCA that included 18 million in album sales. But at 45, she finds the switch invigorating, and it has pushed her in directions she never really considered before. Those days with RCA, she says, were good ones and the split was amicable. “But it’s also good after that long being in one place, to be able to transition to a place that has people that are just super, super excited about you,” McBride said. “Sometimes in a long relationship, there comes a time when you just need to shake it up a little bit, and this feels like the first days when I was at RCA. Everything feels brand new again, and that’s really a great thing, especially this far into a career.” Borchetta was very interested when he learned McBride wanted to talk about joining his group, home to other tops stars like Taylor Swift, Reba McEntire and Rascal Flatts. And why not? She’s one of country’s veterans and remains one of its most lauded singers. She’s up for female vocalist of the year next month at the Country Music Association Awards again, seeking a record fifth win in the category. The label head thought there was more to McBride than the public generally sees, though. He encouraged her to write more songs for Eleven than she had on any of her previous 10 albums, and he also thought she should get out of town while recording. McBride, who also hired new management and brought in new co-producer Byron Gallimore during

Lauren Alaina is growing up quickly. The 16-year-old American Idol runner-up has spent the past four months since the show’s season finale performing in arenas across the country, doing interviews, music video and photo shoots, and recording her debut album, Wildflower, released last week. The former high school cheerleader is hoping the effort will help solidify her in the country music world, because she realizes the stakes are high. “I feel like this first album is kind of make-it-orbreak-it for me, because I just got off national television. So people know who I am, but they don’t know who I am as an artist,” said Lauren in a recent interview. “I just feel like this album is my way of kind of putting myself out there and showing them exactly who I am.” Billboard’s associate director of charts, Keith Caulfield, believes Lauren is off to a good start. Her first single, Like My Mother Does, is in the top 40. “Even though she has Idol as this great platform to launch her, she’s still a developing artist. You usually don’t see Idol winners with their first single on the country charts fly to No. 1,” he said. “I think both her and (winner) Scotty (McCreery) are both in a really good po-

sition right now, because they’re both young and they’re both singing country music,” he added, noting that the success of Taylor Swift has opened doors for young performers in the genre. The 12 songs Lauren chose for Wildflower reveal experiences she’s gone through or stories she relates to on a personal level. She co-wrote one track, called Funny Thing About Love, with Nashville songwriting talents Luke Laird and Brett James. Lauren cut a song Carrie Underwood co-wrote, called Eighteen Inches. As a former American Idol” winner, Underwood has provided meaningful support to Lauren. The two exchanged phone numbers, and Lauren asks her for advice when she gets upset. Recently, the Georgia native was feeling particularly homesick and reached out to Underwood. “I just said, ‘How do you deal with being away from your family for so long and just being gone all the time?’ And she said, ‘You have to think about all the positive stuff that’s going on, because you have so much going for you right now. Your family will always be there.’ Just hearing that from her, knowing that she had been through what I’m going through, just made me feel 10 times better,” said Lauren. There was the lead single Teenage Daughters that arose from a disagreement with her oldest daughter. Long Distance Lullaby, about being away from home, also grew out

of an idea about three daughters. But my question to you is, ‘Who do you have that has a clean record, a clean image, never did drugs, never toted a gun? Who else do you have that can speak to

He was released from a halfway house last month following an 11month stint in a prison in Arkansas. He landed there after he was caught with drugs in California, just a few months after almost a year of incarceration for trying to buy automatic weapons and silencers.

Civil rights leader Andrew Young, who has been a mentor to T.I., said despite the rapper’s rap sheet, he has the potential to positively influence this hiphop driven generation in a similar way that Martin Luther King Jr. did during the civil rights movement. “He’s always trying to keep peace,” Young said of T.I. “He does not cause trouble. School’s out for Gerry Dee Comedian pulls plenty of material from his stint as a teacher Canadian comedian Gerry Dee has a big year ahead of him, with his own sitcom set to launch on CBC-TV in January, as well as a crossCanada tour and a planned DVD and book release. While the former contestant of NBC’s Last Comic Standing has plenty to boast about when it comes to his comedy career these days, there was a time when he was shy about his standup, he says, noting it was during his days as a high school teacher in Toronto. “That was a real secretive thing at first,” Dee, 42, said in a recent phone interview from his Toronto home, where he lives with his wife and two young children. “I’m a fairly clean comic now; I was squeaky clean when I started because I would be so afraid that kids would show up, or parents. And I was teaching at a really reputable, private Catholic school.” Dee, who was born Gerard Donoghue, riffs on that part of his life in his current Life After Teaching Canadian tour and new DVD of the same name,

which is slated for release in January. He’s also writing a book about his days in the classroom, with the working title Teaching: It’s Harder Than It Looks and a release date of next October. Dee’s teaching days are also the basis of his sitcom, Mr. D, which is set to premiere Jan. 9 (at 8 p.m. ET) on CBC. Filmed in July and August in Halifax, the 12episode series sees Dee playing an exaggerated version of himself as a teacher, a career he held down for a decade until 2003. Co-stars include Jonathan Torrens (Jonovision, Trailer Park Boys), Wes Williams (a.k.a. rapper Maestro), Mark Little of Pinicface, and Gemini Award winners Booth Savage and Bette MacDonald. “It’s primarily about my character, who is teaching subjects that he doesn’t know, and is just trying to get through the day and pretend he knows and be (the students’) buddy and be their friend,” says Dee. Probation breach lands Lohan in cuffs

Star taken into custody after judge finds her in violation of probation Bail set at $100,000

Lindsay Lohan has been taken away in handcuffs after a judge found her in violation of her probation. Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner revoked Lohan’s probation Wednesday after the actress encountered problems during her community service assignment at a women’s shelter. Bail has been set at $100,000. Sautner said Lohan would be entitled to a hearing before being sentenced to jail over the violation. Lohan has started serving hours with the American Red Cross, but Sautner said that would not count toward her probation because it was not part of her sentence. It’s the latest legal problem for the 25year-old Lohan, who remains on probation for a 2007 drunken driving case and a misdemeanour theft case this year. METRO

in the bag

As Tiffany & Co. launches their new leather collection in Canada, designers Richard Lambertson and John Truex dish on what’s involved in making a luxury handbag Some items in the collection go for as much as $21,200! Materials account for much of the cost, given that all the bags and wallets have leather exteriors and interiors. “With a lot of ‘luxury’ brands, you open up a bag and it’s empty. It’s fabriclined with a zip pocket,” says Truex.

The star item has been this Tiffany Reversible Tote — a soft suede and metallic leather bag with palladium-plated solid brass hardware and a detachable zipper pouch.

The pair’s designs were sent to craftsmen in Italy where the entire collection was made.

Bag mistake

The designers travelled extensively to derive inspiration for their collection’s rich saturated colours.

“Bags are very personal. A bag has to be functional and appropriate for the person who’s carrying it.”

What do the designers deem the biggest mistake a woman can make when choosing a purse?

Every item in the collection includes the iconic Tiffany shade of blue. The interiors of some of the purses are lined in the signature blue leather, while the reversible tote bears the slightest accent of the shade on the enamel of the hardware.

“Women lug around too many things that are unnecessary,” says Lambertson. “A mistake is wearing a huge tote when you’re wearing a formal dress at a wedding,” adds Truex. “It’s like, come on! The bag is entering the room before you are. Check the bag at the door. I don’t really like when accessories enter the room before the woman does.”

Clad in fedoras, headscarves and oversized glasses, models walking the runway for Attitude Jay Manuel were the picture of globetrotting cool in the spring-summer line from the Sears private label collection. It was the second collection with creative director Jay Manuel of America's Next Top Model fame at the helm. And the new line delivered a taste of urban safari-inspired chic for the jet-setting fashionista, along with several garments that could easily be incorporated into everyday wear closer to home.

Chloe and Parris Gordon brought their own taste artistry to the makeshift canvas catwalk with the latest looks from their fashion and jewelry brand steeped in a colour palette of navy, cream, olive and yellow. The sisters unveiled a sleek succession of monochromatic knits and richly-printed separates adorned with their brassy customized buttons, buckles, findings and zipper ends. The line was a study in contrasts, with tailored suit jackets alongside garments boasting more fluid silhouettes.

Joeffer Caoc brought his penchant for glam to the playing field with an athletic-inspired range of designs at Toronto's LG Fashion Week. Past collections from the womenswear designer have largely focused on his sleek evening looks befitting a night on the town. Yet Caoc opted to embrace a decidedly more casual esthetic in his spring-summer 2012 line. Stylish sportsweartinged touches were present in the creations, which incorporated bright orange and fuchsia alongside powdery pastels on a base of creamy white and neutral hues.

s a home builder in the GTA, I have often looked to BILD to keep me up to date on all the happenings of the new home market, so you can imagine my excitement when I was asked to provide Metro readers with the latest sales statistics for the month of September. It’s been quite the run for the new homes market this year, particularly in the highrise market, but despite all the negative speculation, the demand for condos is still high. High enough, in fact, that the 2,652 highrise condos

sold this September clock in as the best September on record! On a year-to-date basis, total new home sales in the GTA are running 28 per cent ahead of January-September 2010, driven by a 44 per cent surge in new condominium unit sales which breaks another record for the highrise market. The low-rise sector is also on the rise, running nine per cent ahead of last year through September. Now I know about a month ago, we had an unexpected statistic come out, citing that for the first time ever, the 905 regions beat out the city of Toronto in the amount of highrise sales recorded in one month. So August surprised me and I was really curious to see if this was a one-time thing or a new trend. When the September numbers hit my inbox, I knew I

had to see what levels of activity we were getting outside the big city. According to RealNet Canada Inc., the 416 accounted for 64 per cent of condos sold in the GTA, but only 46 per cent of total new home sales. This means there’s still plenty of activity happening in the 905, most of it coming from York Region, where highrise sales have more than tripled in September and are up 145 per cent year-to-date when compared with 2010. I look forward to seeing how these stats play out in the coming months, with interest rates predicted to remain low. As always you can count on BILD to keep you posted! PAUL GOLINI JR. When the sky’s

not the limit ISTOCK

Condo maintenance fees often start out as a nice way to avoid shovelling your front walkway So why do those fees suddenly skyrocket? DUNCAN MCALLISTER

LIFE@METRONEWS.CA

Prospective condo buyers should know the skinny on maintenance fees. One of the great allures of condo living is that your time is freed from the mundane chores required with owning a house. Such favourite activities as snow removal, lawn care, plant watering, window cleaning and vacuuming are performed by condo staff so that you don’t have to. And needless to say, all this has to be paid for. All condos, in addition to mortgage payments, will charge monthly maintenance fees to cover operational costs. Also called common area expenses, the fees cover your share of the maintenance, upkeep and management of the building common areas. The fees are calculated per square foot, so the bigger the condo, the higher the fees. Up to half of the fees collected by the condo corporation will go towards utilities such as electricity, water and gas.

Another 10 per cent will be set aside in a reserve fund to cover large repairs such as roof replacement. If the fees are quite high on an older building, it’s likely that it may have undergone a major repair that depleted the reserve fund. As buildings age, more things go wrong, so newer buildings tend to have lower fees than older buildings. Expect maintenance fees to increase incrementally year over year. It is by how much they increase, that you will want to keep an eye on. Be weary of buying a condo because of its low fees. Builders tend to set them artificially low during presales. By the second and third year, condo boards will realize that they can’t run the building for less than 50 cents per sq. ft., so your fees may double or triple unexpectedly. If the fees go up that much, it may be time to move into a newer building with lower fees. So what is a reasonable amount? Is between 50-60

DEATH AND TAXES ARE SIMPLY UNAVOIDABLE LEGAL MATTERS JEFFREY COWAN HOME @METRONEWS.CA

Q: I am unmarried and own two houses that I

have willed to my two sisters individually. What are the taxes that should be considered if I pass away and the houses go to my sisters?

A: Although I don’t profess to be an expert on taxes (you should consult an accountant for a definitive answer), you will need to consider the following taxes:

1. On the death of an individual who owns a property that is not their principal residence (only one of your houses can be a principal residence), there is a deemed disposition of the property and capital gains taxes are due on the increase in value from the date of purchase to the date of disposition. This is only applicable to

the one house and should be included when the estate accountant files taxes for the deceased. 2. If a property is left to an individual in a will, then once it is transferred to the estate it can subsequently be transferred to the beneficiary without land transfer tax because it is exempt for the purposes of administer-

ing an estate. 3. The third tax that must be considered is estate administration tax (also known as probate fees). The estate must be valued which will consider the value of both properties and a tax will be due and payable before anything can be transferred. This amounts to approxi-

mately 1.5 per cent of the value of the estate (houses, bank accounts, investments, etc,…). This is one of those taxes that must be paid up front. Just remember, two things you can’t avoid: death and taxes. JEFFREY COWAN IS THE PRINCIPAL OF COWAN LAW AND CAN BE REACHED BY EMAIL AT JEFF@COWANLAW.CA.

Easy decor details Simple, decorative ideas you can get done in time for the holidays SCOTCH BLUE BRANDS.

DESIGN CENTRE KARL LOHNES HOME@ METRONEWS.CA

It’s hard to find time to take on decorating projects at this time of the year, so I’ve compiled three simple decorating touches that you can do on a budget

and in less than an afternoon. Darker days, darker doors

Impress guests with some drama when they come through the front door by painting your front door a deep, luxurious colour. The trend of a dark pronounced exterior door is coming back in style as dark colours add a sense of sophistication and importance to the front entry. Bedroom highs

Is the bedroom looking a little bare without a headboard? Well, with a bit of paint, edging tape (try 3M’s EdgeLock blue Painter’s Tape — it is new on the market and gives a crisp, clean edge to your paint job) and a level, you can create a faux headboard, which will add a focal point to your room. For good proportions, measure the faux headboard six inches wider than your bed and at a height of around 52 inches (standard size). To make the painted headboard blend into the

No headboard? No problem. Just pull out a brush and paint one on the wall.

room, choose a paint colour similar to the colour of your bedskirt or bed base. When the paint is dry, lean some large pillows across the top of your mattress and you’ll add a luxurious layered look to your bedroom. Art tricks

You can use the same paintblocking trick to make artwork look larger. Artwork is often purchased for the

subject matter or colours, but may not be the right proportion for the wall space you intend to use it on. A simple way to make a small piece of art look larger or to tie together a collection of smaller pieces of art is to tape off an area slightly larger than the art, paint a block of colour and you’ll visually grow the overall scale of your artwork larger.

Keeping warm this winter HANDOUT

Curling up with blankets and cups of cocoa is lovely — but not when it’s necessary for indoor survival Here’s a few tips for winterizing your home

DIY IDEAS By following simple fall maintenance tips, you can save energy and stay warm this winter. In every episode of 10 Grand in Your Hand host John DeSilvia shows homeowners how to cut up to $10,000 from their renovation and remodelling budgets by offering advice on new technologies and how-to information for doing it yourself. Windows Check for drafts by holding a lit candle near the seams of a closed window. If the flame bends, there’s a draft.

Check the exterior caulk for gaps and cracks that may need repair. Remove all of the old caulking with caulk softener. Polyurethane caulk works best for small and large gaps. After thoroughly cleaning the surface, use the new caulk and run a wet finger overtop for a smooth finish. After drying for 12-15 hours, your windows are ready for winter. Fireplace Wood-burning fireplaces should be cleaned and inspected before winter falls. This will prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Attic Make sure the insulation in your attic is installed properly. The vapour barrier should be facing down toward the living space, otherwise it will trap moisture. Cut small holes along the vapour barrier to allow the moisture to escape. Furnace Always clean and replace filters in your furnace or heating system. Have your gas heater or furnace inspected and serviced to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors Every fall, check your car-

DUST UP YOUR CLEANING SKILLS CHARLES THE BUTLER

Dear Charles the Butler, How do you dust furniture correctly and safely? Signed, Betty in Toronto

ASKCHARLES THEBUTLER@ METRONEWS.CA FOR MORE, VISIT CHARLES MACPHERSON.COM

Hello Betty, Firstly, did you know that the world has twice as much dust today as it did in

the last century? So yes, dusting is both important and necessary. Secondly, when you don’t dust, you attract grease to the surface that attracts even more dust. So dusting is very important! So how do we dust easily and correctly? Well, the good news is that it’s sim-

ple! To make your own dusting rags, use old cotton bed sheets that are cut or torn into large squares (24 x 24 inches). Wet your hands under lukewarm running water, and then dry them with your dusting rag. You now have the perfect amount of humidity in

EMILY RICHARDS FOOD@METRONEWS.CA

Maxine Clark’s collection, Risotto: Delicious Recipes for Italy’s Classic Dish (Ryland, Peters & Small, 2011), features both popular favourites and lesserknown dishes. More than 50 recipes are included that incorporate vegetables; cheese and eggs; poultry and game; meat; sausage and bacon; fish and seafood; and more. A chapter on basic stocks provides simple directions for creating the perfect base for all your risottos. Among the recipes included are: Oven-Roasted Mediterranean Vegetable Risotto, Duck Risotto with Spinach, Ham and Leek Risotto, Scallop and Spring Onion Risotto, and many more, including alternatives such as Sicilian Fried Rice Balls.

Creamy and full of mushrooms, this dish will warm you these cooler

up on evenings. Bursting with rich robust flavours of brown mushrooms and pecorino romano cheese, it uses wild rice for a slightly different texture and flavour. The risotti is best served with a crisp green salad.

Preparation:

In saucepan, heat stock to a simmer. In a separate large saucepan, heat 15 ml (1 tbsp) of the butter and oil on high and cook until melted and bubbly. Add onion and cook until softened, 3 to 5 minutes. Add garlic and stir.

This recipe serves four.

gets finished under the broiler. This creates a delicious lightly browned top .

Preparation:

1

In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk and thyme. Add salt, pepper; set aside.

Heat sun dried tomato oil in oven-safe nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes and garlic. Sauté until onions are soft, about 5 minutes. Add chard and cook until just wilted. Spread vegetables in an even layer over bottom of pan. Pour egg mix over them, then cook, without stirring, for 4 minutes, or until bottom has set. Sprinkle cheese over top of frittata. Transfer the pan to the middle rack of the oven and broil until the frittata is puffed, lightly browned and firm at the

5

the rice is thoroughly cooked through. This will take about 30 to 40 minutes with brown rice. If you run out of stock, add a bit of hot water.

Keep adding stock by ladleful, stirring every 2 minutes until all the stock is absorbed and

Phil Kessel is carrying the Toronto Maple Leafs on his back. The red-hot forward had a goal and two assists last night as the Maple Leafs erased a two-goal deficit in the third period and beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 in a shootout. Kessel extended his NHL lead in both goals and points on a night where Toronto appeared headed for its first regulation loss of the season until a late rally. He has seven goals and 12 points through five games. About the only thing Kessel couldn’t do was score in the shootout, but teammates Joffrey Lupul and Matt Frattin made sure it didn’t matter by each beating Ondrej Pavelec during the tiebreaker. Lupul added two goals in regulation for Toronto (4-0-1), which starts its first road trip of the season in Boston on Thursday night. Mark Scheifele, with his first NHL goal, Tobias Enstrom and Alexander Burmistrov replied for Winnipeg (1-3-1). The home team put on an ugly performance through 40 minutes, registering just 12 shots

It began as a promising night for Winnipeg in its first visit to a Canadian city. A number of fans turned up wearing Jets sweaters and the Leafs rolled out the welcome mat with a scoreboard tribute during a stoppage in play early in the first period. In-game announcer Andy Frost, who was born and raised in Winnipeg, voiced the minutelong video and fans responded with a standing ovation. Shortly after, Enstrom made it 1-0 with Winnipeg’s first power-play goal of the season. He fired a shot through all kinds of traffic that eluded James Reimer at 9:49. Lupul tied it up less than two minutes later with a one-timer that shattered the lens of the in-goal camera. Kessel made a nice play to beat two defenders before finding Lupul — a telling sign of things to come. Winnipeg pulled ahead 3-1 in the middle period. Burmistrov completed a give-and-go with former Leaf Nik Antropov at 2:27 before Scheifele scored on the power play just over five minutes later. The rookie centre was parked at the side of the goal for about 10 seconds before knocking a rebound past Reimer. The St. Louis Cardinals celebrate after defeating the Texas Rangers in the first game of the World Series last night.

Cardinals take Series opener St. Louis kicks off World Series with win at home Craig’s pinch-hit single secures win over Rangers Pinch-hitter Allen Craig singled in the go-ahead run off reliever Alexi Ogando in the sixth inning with a sinking line drive that dropped just in front of right-fielder Nelson Cruz, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 last night in a chilly World Series opener. On a night when all the runs were driven in with opposite-field hits to right, Lance Berkman put St. Louis ahead with a two-run single in the fourth against C.J. Wilson. Catcher Mike Napoli watched in dejection as Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday scored but a few minutes later he celebrated in the top of the fifth when he tied it 2-2 with his drive off Chris Carpenter. Carpenter got the win, allowing five hits in six innings, and Jason Motte got his fifth post-season save. Wilson walked a career-

high six in 52⁄3 innings and took the loss. Colby Lewis starts for the Rangers in Game 2 on Thursday night against Jaime Garcia. Pujols had Cardinals fans cheering in the top of the sixth when he slid to stop Michael Young’s grounder behind first and threw to Carpenter for the out, stranding Ian Kinsler at third. Then in the bottom half, NLCS MVP David Freese hit

an opposite-field double to right with one out and took third on a wild pitch. Wilson struck out Yadier Molina, then pitched carefully to Nick Punto and walked him on four pitches. Ogando relieved, and with many of the red-clad Cardinals fans standing and waving white towels, Craig sliced a 1-2 pitch down the right-field line. Cruz, the ALCS MVP, tried for a sliding catch, but the ball bounced just in front of his glove for a single as Freese scored. Texas was lucky that the ball struck Cruz on a foot; otherwise, it would have rolled to the fence. Carpenter became the first St. Louis starter to reach the sixth inning since the division series. He allowed two runs and five hits in six innings, struck out four and walked one. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
