Libya is currently ranked among the world’s poorest countries. After nearly eight months of fighting between rebels and loyalists, Gadhafi was found and killed at his last remaining stronghold.

Vancouver’s Libyan community celebrated Thursday following the announcement that former Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi had been killed in his hometown of Sirte, southeast of Tripoli, during an assault by rebel forces. Zohou Elburai, a Surrey resident who fled the war-torn country 27 years ago, received word of Gadhafi’s death from her niece in Libya early Thursday morning. “I can’t describe how I feel. This is the happiest news in the world, she said. “Everyone in Libya is so happy. It’s something you cannot describe — it’s unbelievable. During the 4 a.m. phone call with her niece, Elburai could hear celebratory gunshots in the background and shouts from Libyans saying, “God is the greatest. Many were hugging in the streets, she was told. Elburai said the development marks a new era in the LibyaCanada relationship, a sentiment echoed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in a statement. No appeal for Canada Line decision A Vancouver business owner is describing the refusal of Canada’s top court to hear an appeal of a ruling involving losses she suffered as a result of construction of the Canada Line as an “absolute outrage.” Susan Heyes was originally awarded $600,000 for the lost business at her maternity clothing shop, but that was overturned in the B.C. Court of Appeal. She wanted the Supreme Court of Canada to restore the damage award, but the top court says the nuisance caused by Canada Line construction through Vancouver to Richmond was unavoidable. Before there was Occupy Wall Street, there was George W. Bush. The former U.S. president has long been a controversial figure, so it was no surprise that a welcoming committee of approximately 200 protesters were on hand for his visit to the Surrey
Regional Economic Summit Thursday. “All I see is blood,” said Dianna Shaboyer, a homeless mother currently living in a Vancouver shelter who decided to join the protest group in Surrey. “Every time I look at his face, I see blood, hurting and war. It bothers me that he is here.” Dozens of RCMP officers formed a human barricade between the
protesters and the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel, where the summit was taking place, as three police helicopters circled overhead. The protest — focused on the president’s record on torture — remained peaceful, however, and no arrests were made. Murray Weisenberger, the chair of the B.C. Green party, was one of those who felt “obligated”
to protest Bush’s visit. “I’ve stood up for what I’ve believed in all my life,” he said. “If Mr. Bush is innocent of war crimes, he should defend himself at (international court). It’s not for me to decide, I’m only one voice.” The panel featuring Bush and fellow past president Bill Clinton, which was closed to the media, went ahead as planned.

Law responsible for isolating prostitutes: VPD lawyer Vancouver police lawyer argues the law did not address underlying causes of prostitution The Vancouver Police Department’s decades-long campaign to move sex workers into the darkest, dirtiest streets of the city’s Downtown Eastside was only in response to a law that intended to keep prostitutes out of sight, the force’s lawyer told a public inquiry Thursday. The hearing into the Robert Pickton case has heard from several witnesses who have complained about police
tactics that have displaced sex workers and contained them in dangerously isolated areas of the city, where they are easy prey for predators. But Vancouver police lawyer Tim Dickson suggested the force was only doing the best it could under the law that prohibits communication for the purposes of prostitution, which came into effect in 1985. The law replaced previous provisions that
made solicitation a crime. “The police have a mandate to enforce a law that has as its purpose removing prostitution from streets and from view ... but when the police do enforce the law, the street prostitution doesn’t go away, it just goes somewhere else,” Dickson said when cross-examining Simon Fraser University criminologist John Lowman. “That’s the general pat-
tern,” replied Lowman. Dickson argued the law was never intended to eradicate prostitution, but rather address the public nuisances associated with sex work. He noted displace-and-contain strategies such as those used in Vancouver, which create areas in which prostitution is tolerated, are in place in other cities across Canada. Neither did the law attempt to address any of
the underlying causes of prostitution, said Dickson, which he said would have required intervention at all three levels of government. “And the best practical response the police can offer, at least from an enforcement standpoint, is to create a zone of tolerance,” said Dickson. “In terms of those issues, yes,” replied Lowman. THE CANADIAN PRESS
Law’s target Simon Fraser University criminologist John Lowman said the law only appears to target street-level sex work, leaving a two-tiered system in which safer forms of prostitution such as escort services and massage parlours are effectively legal. Lowman earlier testified that street prostitutes are on the bottom of those two tiers, where drug-addicted women, often aboriginal, sell sex to feed their habits and survive.

Every fall, cranberry farmers in B.C. stretch into their hip waders and haul floating booms through flooded crimson fields to bring in their floating harvest. “Tractors, cranberries, sunshine — you put it all together and you really feel good about what you do,” said Kristina May at her family’s Mayland Farm in East Richmond Thursday. The city, which now has more than 800 hectares of cranberry fields, produces the cranberry crop through Ocean Spray, a farmer-owned cooperative. Most of Richmond’s haul is sent to the U.S. to be turned into Craisins. The fruit is harvested by pumping river water into the bog. The berries float and are knocked mechanically off their vines and are corralled with floating booms, elevated into trucks and hauled for cleaning and processing.

Top 5 houses to haunt you Wandering dark halls of hanging bodies and bloody scenes with zombies and wolverines — why do people enjoy haunted houses? “Fear energizes people, gets the adrenaline flowing,” said Ken Craig, psychology professor at the University of B.C. “There is an optimal level of fear that is associated with enjoyment.” While some worry about the violence portrayed by Halloween costumes, Craig argues Halloween can be a good exercise for children. “There are advantages for children to think about pain and injury, to develop coping mechanisms and to practise for real-world situations with little risk of real danger,” Craig said. Metro has curated a topfive Halloween experiences to please thrill-seeking souls.

Will bras work wonders? Thousands of women will show off their brassieres Saturday at the Capilano Suspension Bridge with Virgin Radio hosts Kiah Tucker and Tara Jean Stevens as they string bras across the bridge to raise money for breast cancer awareness month. Every time the bras span the canyon, Virgin and the Capilano Suspension Bridge will donate $500 each to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Stevens said this year is
set to be record-breaking, with bra donations already exceeding last year’s collection. The goal is to reach $10,000. The Virgin hosts participate in fundraisers throughout the year, but in their third Bras Across the Bridge campaign they said they’ll have fun, as always. “There is a serious result because we raise money for breast cancer,” said Tucker. “But it’s something we can do in good humour.” CHELSEA ALTICE
ET Canada brings its hosts Cheryl Hickey and Rick Campanelli to Vancouver Monday for a live threeday broadcast at Jack Poole Plaza. “To finally do it after six years, to bring it to the people who watch the show across Canada, there’s no better place than in Vancouver,” Hickey said. “We don’t have what you guys have,” Campanelli added. “The mountains, the ocean, the people. Everyone is just so positive, and it puts a smile on my face just thinking we get to come out there.” Vancouver’s own Hedley will be kicking off the star-studded lineup with the televised premiere of
their new hit single Invincible from their forthcoming release Storms. Among the Canadian stars turning out for the broadcast, Hickey said she is looking forward to speaking with Shannon Tweed, who most recently appeared on the reality TV show Gene Simmons Family Jewels. Vancouverites will have the opportunity to meet the ET crew and be a part of the show with gates opening every day at 2 p.m. “If anyone is thinking of coming out to the show, now is the time because who knows when we’ll be back out,” Campanelli said. A Montreal family couldn’t bear the “treachery” of their three teenaged daughters having boyfriends, so they drowned them and the father’s first wife, pushing a car into a canal and making the scene look like an accident, court heard Thursday. Days after the bodies were found the father was recorded saying, “There is nothing more valuable than our honour.” Tooba Mohammad Yahya, 41, her husband Mohammad Shafia, 58, and their son, Hamed Mohammad Shafia, 20, are each charged with four counts of first-degree murder. New Brunswick’s official languages commissioner says politicians and government agencies should use both official languages when they use Twitter and Facebook. Michel Carrier says when elected members engage the public on social media websites, they should do so in both French and English, just as they would when sending a letter or fax. Carrier issued the call in his annual report released Thursday. He says he doesn’t want his recommendation to discourage politicians or civil servants from using social media, though he doesn’t use Twitter himself. Greek MPs pass tough austerity bill Unions keep services crippled on second day of general strike Anarchists run amok in Athens Greek lawmakers passed a deeply resented new austerity bill Thursday, caving in to the demands of international creditors in order to avoid a national bankruptcy, as a second day of riots left one protester dead and more than 100 people wounded. The austerity measures won 154-144 in the 300member parliament despite dissent from a prominent Socialist lawmaker who voted against a key article of the bill. The vote was expected to pave the way for a vital $11-billion US payout from creditors within weeks so Greece can stay solvent. Clouds of tear gas choked central Athens ahead of the vote as riot police intervened to separate rival demonstrators who fought for several hours with firebombs and stones outside parliament. A 53-year-old construction worker died of heart failure after attending a mass rally, while 74 protesters and 32 police officers were hospitalized with injuries, police and state hospital officials said. Police said they detained 79 people suspected of violent conduct. After initial hours of calm, the rioting erupted when hundreds of masked

The Communist-backed union members counterattacked, and chaos ensued as the two sides fought with sticks and rocks before riot police fired volleys of tear gas to separate them. Former labour minister Louka Katseli voted against one article that scales back collective bargaining rights for workers. Dragged from hiding in a drainage pipe, a wounded Moammar Gadhafi raised his hands and begged revolutionary fighters: “Don’t kill me, my sons.” Within an hour, he was dead, but not before jubilant Libyans had vented decades of hatred by pulling the eccentric dictator’s hair and parading his bloodied body on the hood of a truck. The death Thursday of Gadhafi, two months after he was driven from power and into hiding, decisively buries the nearly 42-year regime that had turned the oil-rich country into an international pariah and his own personal fiefdom. It also thrusts Libya into a new age in which its transitional leaders must overcome deep divisions and rebuild nearly all its institutions to achieve dreams of democracy. “We have been waiting
for this historic moment for a long time. Moammar Gadhafi has been killed,” Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril said in the capital of Tripoli. “I would like to call on Libyans to put aside the grudges and only say one word, which is Libya, Libya, Libya.” Other leaders have fallen in the Arab Spring uprisings, but Gadhafi, 69, is the first to be killed. He was killed in Sirte, where revolutionary fighters overwhelmed the last of his loyalist supporters Thursday after weeks of heavy battles. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Following a 90-minute battle Thursday morning, fighters said with the help of NATO airstrikes they had taken control of Sirte, ending a two-month siege and eliminating the last important holdout post for troops loyal to the deposed leader. Reports suggest that Gadhafi along with key loyalists tried to flee east toward Misrata as the last battle was ongoing.
The Colonel’s convoy was reportedly ambushed, with Gadhafi managing to flee. The ousted leader was located some time later in a storm-water drainpipe. “Don’t shoot, don’t shoot!” — the apparent words of the Colonel as he pleaded with NTC rebels for their mercy, according to fighter Mohammed Al Bibi.
There is uncertainty how exactly Gadhafi died. An alleged eyewitness said that he saw the Colonel being shot in the abdomen. Grisly mobile phone video footage appears to show a bloodied Gadhafi being roughly handled. Other footage exclusive to Al Jazeera shows Gadhafi’s shirtless body on the ground.
Following word that Gadhafi had initially been captured, confirmation of the Colonel’s death was made official. “We announce to the world that Moammar Gadhafi has been killed at the hands of the revolutionaries,” Abdul Hafiz Ghoga, vice chairman of the NTC said. Reports have surfaced that Gadhafi’s corpse is at a mosque in Misrata. ANTHONY JOHNSTON

Online accusations not helpful: Police Online accusations can change a person’s life. Garnet Ford lost his job and received numerous death threats after his name was spread across social media as the one responsible for the death of Jamie Kehoe, who died after being stabbed in the neck while trying to stop a fight on a bus in Surrey. The Burnaby roofer was let go when his boss learned of the accusations, but he eventually got his job back. Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the integrated homicide investigation team says police had a responsibility to address the public to make sure people knew Ford had been ruled out as a suspect. Pound says accusations and threats on social-media sites affect not only the person involved but also the police investigation. “It takes resources off the actual homicide investigation to figure out where these threats are coming from, why they are being delivered
to a certain individual, she says. “The police also need to lead the investigations based on facts and evidence and not based on speculation, and certainly not based on information received through social media. Online accusations could also harm the investigation down the road, Pound says. “In the Canadian Charter of Rights, everybody is entitled to be given a fair trial, she says. “If he or she is already being deemed guilty by the public, then that really does pose a problem down the line for the courts. David Eby of the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association says naming and shaming will remain with us until people begin to be sued for defaming other people. “I think the preference for everybody is not that government regulate speech, he says, “but for people to understand some basic etiquette. “If someone hasn’t been convicted of a crime, then it’s probably a bad idea to put their picture up on the Internet and say they’re a criminal. The very real dangers of naming and shaming We still have a lot to learn about the impact of posting anything and everything online: Experts Education needed on social-media ethics PHYLICIA TORREVILLAS/METRO
PHYLICIA TORREVILLAS @METRONEWS.CA
Social media have increasingly become our tools of choice for public discourse and mass mobilization, but some experts say people who use them for naming and shaming have yet to realize the online digital baggage it can bring them and others. After the June 15 Stanley Cup riot, outraged Vancouverites turned to their blogs, Twitter and Facebook to identify rioters. Some created public pages devoted to outing those, such as alleged rioter Brock Anton, who posted on Facebook that he “flipped some cars ‌ (and) burnt some cop cars.â€? “In the 13th century, people would have been in the village square to shame people and point fingers,â€? says Richard Smith, a Simon Fraser University communications professor and social-media expert. The modern village square is Facebook and Twitter, he said. Those behind the may-
hem have felt the consequences of being identified in “online vigilantism. Among them is Nathan Kotylak, a water-polo star who was photographed apparently trying to vandalize a police car. Kotylak received numerous threats after his address and cellphone number, as well as his father’s name and office number, were posted online. He was banned from playing for the national team for two years. Elizabeth Denham, B.C.’s information and privacy commissioner, says social media are neutral: It’s what people do with them — whether good or bad — that matters. Denham says privacy laws pretty much exclude what people post about others online, but they could face legal action for libel and defamation. “I do think that education aimed at youth is really needed, she says. “The concept of digital citizenship and ethical online practices — that’s going to push us into behaving more ethically online.

Social media: A modern version of the medieval village square, complete with village idiots.
Stuart Poyntz, associate professor at SFU’s school of communication, says social media have changed the game when it comes to people’s public presence and representation. “We don’t control the interpretation of who we are, he says. “Social media situates the interpretation of who we are. All three experts agree that people have yet to come to terms with how best to manage, make sense of and organize social media in their lives.
But eventually, they say, people will realize naming and shaming are not the way to go. “The kind of absurdity, hypocrisy and contradictions of social media will start to become more evident to people, Poyntz predicts. “There will be a more concerted, socially shared effort to manage and make better sense of how social media is affecting our lives and shaping our public presentation, he says.

1
Moammar Gadhafi: It’s been a bad year for jihadists and despots: Mubarak, bin Laden and now the terrorist clown (or is that clown terrorist?) gets his.
2
Bicoastal bliss: The feds launch a lot of boats with $35 billion. Stephen Harper could get elected king this morning, at least in Vancouver and Halifax, where the ship-building industries are enjoying an instant revival. We’s the bys what build the boats. Buy Canadian, eh?
3
Shark-fin ban: Toronto city council votes Monday on a motion to ban the sale of shark fins and shark-fin soup. Did you know that 73 million sharks a year are killed for their fins and that some species have been reduced by 90 per cent? Save the sharks! Switch to tomato bisque!
4
Chinese toddler: A poor little two-year-old girl was run over — twice — by some jerks, and more than a dozen people walked around her as she lay screaming for nearly 10 minutes. It’s causing a lot of hand-wringing in China. Let’s just hope that when they stop wringing, they actually start helping people who need a hand.
5
Jungle book: The other unhappy story everyone’s talking about is the guy who let all his lions and tigers loose in Ohio and then killed himself. It turned into a bad day for the whole menagerie as state deputies turned into big-game hunters, and now most of the lions, tigers and, oh my, bears are dead. At last report, there was one lone monkey out there. My advice: don’t monkey around. Get out of Ohio.

Torture enablers are people too: George W. Bush comes to Metro Vancouver Friday, and the Occupy people want him arrested for war crimes. Hail (and rocks and rotten tomatoes) to the Chief. True blue: Steven Slater, the guy who escaped from his job as a Jet Blue flight attendant — literally — down the emergency chute, avoids hard time. But has to pay the airline back for damaging their chute: $831.25 bucks a month. And he thought life was tedious before. But then there’s the book tour to look forward to.

photo of the day Letters Christy Clark, quick at attempting to take credit for working hard to get the contract for building ships in B.C., must have a short memory. This contract wasn’t awarded because she’s cute it was awarded because of the capability of the shipyard industry, the very same industry that her government rejected when it came to building the B.C. ferries, spending some $500 million in Germany back in 2007. I am overwhelmed with joy at the $8 billion that will soon stimulate B.C.’s economy for a very long time. I am however disgusted with the money Christy Clark and Rich Coleman are willing to spend, and I may add, money we do not have, on a smart meter program that is shortsighted that will result in job loss and is doing nothing but stimulating the economy of manufacturers of this technology and related products that come from outside our borders. The union of B.C. municipalities did pass a resolution calling for a moratorium on the installation of these meters stating numerous valid reasons. Yet Rich Coleman said we don’t care we are doing it anyway.

Just like that, a planet is born Astronomers have captured the first direct image of a planet being born. Adam Kraus, of the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy, said the planet is being formed out of dust and gas circling a two-millionyear-old star about 450 light years from Earth. The planet itself, based on scientific models of how planets form, is estimated to have started taking shape about 50,000 to 100,000 years ago. Called LkCa 15 b, it’s the youngest

Wall Street protesters looking beyond traditional media to spread their message The Wall Street protest against economic inequality has a chaotic and complicated relationship with media that has helped spread its message across the world from a small Manhattan park. Like the demonstrations themselves, Occupy Wall Street’s media operation has no clear leader or simple message. Some of its volunteers work to help reporters whose cameras and microphones dot Zuccotti Park, even as many protesters express an aver-
sion toward the press. The media volunteers have counted at least 500 outlets that have sent reporters to the park, including a New Zealand newspaper, a college newspaper from Texas and a documentary filmmaker from Australia. If asked, the volunteers work as “fixers” for reporters who want to interview specific types of people — for example, a student overloaded with college loan debts or a jobless middle-aged person, said Jeff Smith, a vol-
unteer who works in advertising. Julianne Pepitone, a reporter for CNNMoney, said that in the early days, media volunteers would often approach her in the park and ask if she needed any help. It struck her as a well-oiled machine.
Still, it can get frustrating covering a leaderless movement. “When you speak to these people, they are very careful to say, ‘I don’t speak for the whole revolution. No one does,’” she said. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS.

What good is growth? Despite GDP gains, Canadians are working harder to stay afloat A generation of solid economic growth has meant little in the everyday lives of most Canadians, according to a new index of wellbeing. The finding is a yellow light for decision-makers that social unrest is just around the corner unless deep changes are made, warns Roy Romanow, the advisory board chairman of the University of Waterloo group that created the index. Synopsis The new film is a prequel to the first films and follows the template set by the first two movies. Set in the VHS era of 1988, recurring characters Katie and Kristi Rey are little girls living with their mother (Lauren Bittner) and her boyfriend (Christopher Nicholas Smith), a wedding video editor. When they start hearing strange sounds in their new house, he sets up video cameras to find out what’s keeping them up at night. Is the boyfriend obsessed or is the house possessed? Paranormal Activity’s recurring characters Katie and Kristi Rey are creepy little kids in this instalment of the franchise.
Horror hat trick Paranormal Activity franchise should be getting old, but the third instalment still offers plenty of scares Film a shining example of ‘found footage’ genre
Richard: Mark, I have to say, I’m a bit of a sucker for things that go bump in the night and even though the Paranormal Activity series should be a little long in the tooth by now, it still made me jump. Are you as big a fraidy cat as I am? Mark: I usually pop a Xanax before I see a horror film so I can better appreciate the movie for its technical merits. But I didn’t for this one. And yes, the movie did frighten me, but only in the last 15 minutes, which were terrific. I found it a bit too long getting going and had a bit too much dark humour to create that air of dread
right off the top. The first two installments of the franchise really creeped me out; this one is better made, but didn’t give me the punch until the end. RC: This one is 99 per cent anticipation, one per cent payoff, but the one per cent is pretty good. I think the low-fi feel of the movies — the picture really does look like home video most of the time — combined with really natural performances from unknown actors make the Paranormal Activity movies feel like real “found footage” movies. Most movies of the genre are a little too slick. These
aren’t. There’s no music, no stars and it feels like you’re watching something that could be real ... almost. MB: Yes, and that’s not easy. It takes real filmmaking talent to look this artless. One thing I love about the series, and this movie in particular, is how much of the plot takes place at the edges of the screen. You really have to pay attention to see what’s really happening in the frame. And the static takes almost feel like some European art film, although the technical innovation of the oscillator-cam in this film is inspired. I was also pleased
that the movie had a backstory and plot, although, cleverly, you don’t realize it until the movie is done. RC: This one is a prequel, featuring the recurring characters Katie and Kristi Rey as creepy little kids. Not sure what’s next though ... maybe Paranormal Activity in Outer Space? MB: Well, before the screening, we were warned that to prevent privacy, the theatre would be continuously scanned using night vision technology. Paranormal Activity 4, anyone?

Who was the
Bard?
Director Roland Emmerich takes on the literary establishment with his new film that questions whether Shakespeare really wrote all those plays NED EHRBAR
SCENE@METRONEWS.CA METRO WORLD NEWS IN HOLLYWOOD
While he was busy making millions with disaster films like Independence Day, the Day After Tomorrow and 2012, German director Roland Emmerich secretly had a completely different kind of film in mind — a film about the true authorship of Shakespeare’s plays. And while he does manage to sneak an explosion or two into Elizabethan London, Anonymous is indeed a completely different film than what he’s made before, and he always knew bringing it to the world would be “an uphill battle.” Do you have your own opinion about the identity of Shakespeare?
I side with the artists and writers. I side with Mark
Ryland, Derek Jacobi, Walt Whitman, Henry James, Sigmund Freud, Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles — all these people believed that the man from Stratford didn’t write it. The problem with this whole thing, anyway, is there’s the literary establishment — the educators, the professors, the school teachers and all these people who write books about the man from Stratford. They’ve devoted their whole lives, and now the Master of Disaster comes along and makes this movie — maybe I’m the antichrist, we don’t know yet. They’re thinking I am. But whatever it is, they have to bedevil me, they have to kind of think this is all nonsense, but it isn’t. And it’s an uphill battle, I knew that going in. What made you want to take on this subject?
The orthodox scholars have a huge problem with the work of Shakespeare. How do they want to explain that? How can a commoner write only about the point of view of an aristocrat? Why is there so much poetry? It’s very hard to believe that it was written by a guy who was a younger man who was just coming to London as a commoner. The whole thing just doesn’t make sense. We wanted to just show another version of it, just an alternate history. The last time we spoke, you were casting this film. How is it to show the finished product to the world?
It’s a little nerve-wracking, but it’s always nervewracking whenever you make a movie. You have to show it, you know? I actually do movies mainly because I want to see them, but
Anonymous presents the controversial theory that it was the Earl of Oxford who penned Shakespeare’s plays.
films are so expensive, you have to show them to people. Lots of people! And that’s always nerve-wracking for me because I’m just afraid that they’ll throw tomatoes at me or something. It’s not your usual subject matter.
Yeah, it was very risky to make, because boy if I would f--- that one up, then people would say, “Oh, my God. Do we need that?” But I think we did a pretty good job, so hopefully the people will not say that. But it was just a pleasure to work with these incredible actors. I had on this film the freedom to cast whoever I wanted, and because of
that it was really a joy to do it. Also, it was the first movie I did in Germany in 20 years. I chose Germany because I felt most at home there and I know a lot of people there and I have a great group, which could
What about Shakespeare’s sexuality? There’s been speculation about Shakespeare’s sexuality, with scholars claiming evidence supports the idea that his young patron, the Earl of Southampton, was actually his lover. It’s something Emmerich kept out of Anonymous.
be all Germans because I speak German. How did the mostly English cast feel about that?
They thought we were kind of like Hobbits who speak in their secret language, you know? “There was a time where everybody thought Shakespeare was gay, which I think when you look at the plays he wasn’t,” the director explains. “There were too many tortured relationships with women. And you can explain this with [the Earl of Oxford],” who Emmerich theorizes wrote the plays, “but with the man from Stratford, you can’t really explain that.

Glenn Gould, Emily Carr, Norman Bethune, Pierre Trudeau and L.M. Montgomery have something in common. They are extraordinary Canadians. Canada is a land of pioneering, spirited and determined citizens; we are world class artists, scientists, doctors, statesmen, activists, writers, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and, of course, comedians. Extraordinary Canadians shape our national identity and international reputation as a humane, peaceful nation of progressive thinkers. Producer Kenneth Hirsch celebrates that ideal in a Citytv series, based on Penguin Canada’s acclaimed biography collection Extraordinary Canadians.

Dogs days have gone ‘darker’ American version of Aussie series Wilfred promises to stay dour, says star Jason Gann IAN JOHNSTON
SCENE@METRONEWS.CA
Ten years on, TV viewers still can’t seem to get enough of actor Jason Gann in a floppy dog suit. Which is just fine with the Aussie star of Wilfred, a short film that became an Australian TV series, only to be reinvented recently as an American sitcom. “It’s not like I’ve been wearing the suit for all 10 years. There have been long gaps,” laughs Gann, who was in Toronto Wednesday to promote
Air time Audiences will get a sneak peek at Wilfred Monday at 10 p.m. (ET) on Citytv, followed by its FX-Canada premiere Oct. 31 at 11 p.m. (ET).
Wilfred’s debut on the new FX-Canada. “But I could easily do it another 10 years. As long as people find the character funny and interesting.” In its American incarnation, Wilfred centres on a suicidal lawyer (Elijah Wood) who meets a come-
ly neighbour and her dog Wilfred (Gann). Except Ryan sees Wilfred as an angry, pot-smoking man in a shabby dog suit. What ensue are odd adventures in which Wilfred shows Ryan how to overcome his fears and embrace life. Gann — who also co-created the series — says fans of the original Aussie version shouldn’t worry that the show has been sanitized for North American audiences. “I never saw the two versions as all that different. To me, it just feels like the show and the charac-

lines you just don’t forget easily.” She says the most difficult thing is keeping a straight face during filming with a man-sized dog in your ear. “I’d be having a serious conversation with Elijah and all I hear behind me is ‘Ball! Ball! Ball!’. You really

have to learn to block it out.” One element the American version does lack is some of the original’s swearing and nudity. “We had to work harder to keep it dark,” says Gann. “But I think we were so successful, we made the show even darker.”

Grab up a Bette Midler gown — help benefit the veteran star’s charity The funny-gal veteran admits she couldn’t part with all of her dresses She’s auctioning off some of her most famous duds and hopes that popstar Lady Gaga will jump at the change to pick up some unique wears It wasn’t long ago that Bette Midler blasted Lady Gaga on Twitter for appearing in a costume that was similar to Midler’s famous mermaid-in-a-wheelchair get-up. Now Midler’s extending an olive branch by suggesting Gaga buy some of her originals. “I think she should go for a real wheelchair and a real fishtail because these are really beautiful. They are decorated and handbeaded,” Midler said. “If she is interested, she can have whatever she wants because she is a very talented girl and I love her a lot.” Gaga and the rest of the world will soon be able to bid on that costume and more, as she’s selling some of her outfits through Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills on Nov. 12, with some of the proceeds benefiting her charity, the New York Restoration Project.
Questions.
Was it crazy going through all of the costumes, sizes and styles?
It was my weight. It was my height. It was the fashion. It was what colour my hair was. It was who I was living with, or who I was in love with. It is very, very moving, but it is also time to spin that stuff out into the world. You get to a certain point in life and you say, ‘Do I really want my daughter to have to deal with this when I am gone?’ It is just so massive and you don’t. You really don’t. You want people to have the joy of it while you are still alive. What are some of the items that you could not part with?
The dress that I wore to the red carpet for the opening of The Rose. I kept that back. That was the dress that made me cry because it was such a wonderful time in my life and I was surrounded by friends and I was so thin.
More questions for Midler What if Gaga buys your entire collection? I would be thrilled. I hope she buys at least a little bit. It would be fun. Do you look back on some of this and think, I can’t believe I wore that? You can say I can’t believe I dressed up as a fish. You can say that.
You are selling the iconic mermaid costume?
Not just one. Some of my best ones are up for auction, and some of my chorus girls are up for auction, and I am waiting for Gaga to get in there and grab hers. Some of the wheelchairs are up for auction. I mean, there is a selection from everything. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS /PETER KRAMER/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

In the summer of 1996 Oasis were at the peak of their career. The Gallagher brothers had been declared legends and in front of the Scottish castle Knebworth they are crowning their success with the biggest double concert ever in the United Kingdom — in front of 250,000 adoring fans. What is the biggest difference writing songs when you are 30 compared to when you are 44? Have the lyrics and the music changed?
This is your first solo album. In what way has it been different recording Noel Gallagher’s high flying birds compared to the work with Oasis?
The circumstances in my life have absolutely changed, I have three kids now. And a cat. But no, I don’t thing it has affected my song writing. I don’t write songs about my amazing kids — that would be a pretty boring album. I hope that whoever listens should see some-

Yeah, that’s right. The similarities are that this is my first solo album and that was Oasis first album. The excitement about the unknown is the same I think. We didn’t have an audience then — and I don’t have an audience now.

RECYCLING MUSIC WILL ONLY GO SO FAR SOUND CHECK
“A big part of why we keep recycling the music of the old innovators is because of technology. With the Internet, it’s never been easier to access the past.”
ALAN CROSS SCENE @METRONEWS.CA
I’m working my way through Retromania by Simon Reynolds, a book that explores why we seem so fascinated with fetishizing music of the recent past.
R
etro can be loosely defined as everything old is new again. Anything can be retro: fashion, art, advertising, movies, TV
and, of course, music. Reynolds points out that for the first time in human history, we’ve never been this obsessed with our own immediate past. Retro isn’t some antiquarian pursuit. We’re nostalgic for things within recent living memory. We still worship the music of the 60s. The rock giants of the 70s — Zeppelin, the Stones — are as big as they ever were. Clubs still hold Retro 80s nights and acts like OMD and Spandau Ballet are on the road again. Lately, it’s been all about celebrating the grunge era of the 90s with reunions (Soundgarden), documentaries (Pearl Jam) and commemorative CD reissues (Nirvana, U2). Meanwhile, current acts
have become very successful by recycling the past. I love the White Stripes, but hasn’t Jack White just put a fresher garage-rock spin on the blues? The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand and Interpol are New Wave and postpunk with new coats of paint. Isn’t Lady Gaga just Madonna 2.0? And while Adele, Amy and Duffy have made brilliant records, they sound like something transported ahead from 1966. And think about this: give me a single new sound/genre that will endure beyond the first years of the 21st century? There have been a few — grime, dubstep, maybe whatever Kanye is doing — but I’m not sure we’ll be wistful about this music ten years
from now. A big part of why we keep recycling the music of the old innovators is because of technology. With the Internet, it’s never been easier to access the past. And because so much of our immediate musical past has been preserved through YouTube, iTunes and millions of fan websites, it’s easier to mine it for ideas and influences. That’s great. But what happens when we run out of the past? Do we just start over? Or has as this music been around long enough that it’s become an artifact and can now only feed on itself ? Or will someone have come along to push popular music forward? These are all extremely big questions. Something to think about the next time you hear about the next big reunion tour. His answer is loaded with both possibility and trepidation. “It’s in there, and it’s got to come out, so I would imagine so,” he says, “But there’s very few books of that nature that I find worthwhile.” Surely he found Keith Richards’ autobiography a stimulating read? “Yeah, I helped Keith with that,” he says. Big, bad Wolf There was only one time that Peter Wolf can remember actually rehearsing a story. The J. I was sort of the bohemian mess.” Keeping with this bohemian mess tradition, Wolf says the stories he shares are very off-the-cuff. “Some nights we’ll put in 18 songs or sometimes 16 songs, depending on if I just rap on,” he says. “It’s all just very spontaneous.” GETTY IMAGES

Three albums in and Metronomy, the electropop quartet based in Brighton, England, are only now getting name recognition in the U.S., Canada and in their native country. But frontman and Metronomy mastermind Joseph Mount is philosophical about the newfound fame. “Certainly with the English music press, you some-

Quote “There’s this radio station in England, BBC Radio One, that has this iron grip on the success of bands. 6 Music started as this alternative to Radio One, but after a while it ended up being the same ... where it’s in charge of breaking bands and if you are on 6 Music, then you are more likely to get on Radio One. I guess it just feels like it’s the right time for people to feel like they can get behind it a bit more.” All the adoration may also be due to the fact that Mount and his bandmates have put together a palat-
able pop album that fuses Metronomy’s characteristically clicky synths with danceable beats and singable melodies. Mount is a natural tinkerer, having made the band’s last two albums largely on his own. “They were all home recorded,” he says of the first two albums, “I just thought at that point maybe it would’ve been a strange decision to keep making it that way,” he

You have to love Europeans. Not only is wine part of their every day life, they have a ritual of pre-dinner drinks that makes booze a natural companion to their dining culture. They do it up best in Italy. Order a glass of the appealingly bitter Campari ($20.99 $27.49) and soda at any resto and you’ll get a nod from your waiter that suggests he knows you know how to drink Italian. One of my favourite Italian cities to imbibe in is Verona in the province of Veneto. It’s surrounded by the wine regions of Valpolicella, Bardolino and Soave, and the popular sparkling wine Prosecco is made nearby. The Veronese are crazy for The Spritz: A mix of two ounces of Campari’s little (and less bitter) brother Aperol ($21.99 - $25.98) with an equal part Prosecco and a dash of sparkling water. Served over ice in a large wine glass and garnished with a slice of orange, it’s an appetite enhancing refresher. Thanks to its bright orange colour, it’s also an appropriate tipple for the fall season. PRICES REFLECT THE

Luongo not fazed by slow start Netminder looks to put behind another rough beginning
‘It’s the way I’ve always been’ RICH LAM/GETTY IMAGES
It’s that time of year again for Roberto Luongo. The Vancouver Canucks goaltender, a notorious slow starter, is going through his usual October funk. He spent his second day in a row Thursday talking about his annual rite of fall as the Vancouver Canucks prepared to meet the Nashville Predators. But Luongo, who backstopped the Canucks to the Stanley Cup final last spring, vowed not to change his game or routine. “It’s just about work, man,” Luongo said before facing the Predators. “You’ve just got to work in practice and just roll up your sleeves and get to work and get out of it as quick as possible.” The barrage of criticism started after the New York Rangers stole a 4-0 victory from the Canucks on Tuesday as Henrik Lundqvist posted a 40-save shutout. Luongo had shut out the Rangers for two periods as Vancouver limited New York to nine shots but felt the wrath of fans soon after allowing Mike Rupp’s opening goal, for which he could not be faulted. Slow starts have dogged the Canucks goalie throughout his career. “It’s the way I’ve always been through my whole career. It’s not something I enjoy or am proud of,” said Luongo, now in his sixth campaign with the Canucks. “But at the same time, it’s better to have a little down time at the beginning of the year than somewhere in the middle
