Students mourn deaths of 4 peers Memorial held for football players Grande Prairie Composite says it will have grief counsellors on hand for students or parents

Biebs, Gomez heat up the rink Teen pop music sensation Justin Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez were in Winnipeg on the weekend and reportedly took in several sights, including the Forks and the Manitoba Museum. They caught a movie and even did some racing at Speed World, an indoor go-kart track. Bieber won.

Hundreds of orange helium-filled balloons were released silently into the cool autumn night in memory of four high school football players killed when a pickup truck slammed into their car in northern Alberta. The coach of the Grande Prairie Composite High School Warriors stood on a players’ bench on the football field and led the gathering in a prayer. “Be safe tonight. Be there for each other, moving forward,” Rick Gilson told the crowd on Saturday. Gilson, who’s also the school’s principal, then stepped off the bench and spoke quietly to his young football players who huddled around him. “We have to be courageous,” he told the boys. Then he whispered the cheer they would give, and they raised their fists into the air. “Three, two, one, Brothers! One, two, three, Warriors! Fight

On!” they shouted. Grande Prairie RCMP said Mathew Deller, 16, Vincent Stover, 16, Walter BordenWilkens, 15, and Tanner Hildebrand, 15, died early Saturday morning. Another teen, 15-year-old Zak Judd, was critically injured and is in stable condition at an Edmonton-area hospital, police said. All the teens in the car attended Grande Prairie Composite. A professional development day had already been scheduled for the high school today, but the school said it will have grief counsellors present for students or parents who wish to speak with them. Adam Fragomeni, an assistant coach for the Warriors and science teacher at the school, said the loss of the boys is overwhelming. “Being a teacher and a coach, you form a very special bond

Man arrested Police say the pickup fled the scene, but a man was arrested a short time later. Brendan Holubowich, 21, of Grande Prairie, faces 11 charges, including four counts of impaired driving causing death, and one count of failing to remain at an accident. Holubowich was released on bail yesterday, and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 31 at Grande Prairie Provincial Court.

with them. You spend a lot of time with them, maybe even more than their parents,” Fragomeni said. “The loss — I just can’t put it into words.” The Warriors were scheduled to play next Saturday in a league semifinal game. Gilson has told the media that his team will play. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Edmonton schools considering shorter summer and fall week off SHELLEY WILLIAMSON

As Edmonton Public schools net public input on a fall break, a Catholic board spokesperson said parents in schools they’ve modified calendars for give it top marks. Three Edmonton Catholic schools have yearround calendars, which puts students in class in August, but allows two weeks off in October and an extra week off in spring. Lori Nagy, Edmonton Catholic Schools District spokesperson, said it’s the same number of instructional days as schools with the traditional calendar. “It’s easier for parents to get time off in October than to take the whole summer off, said Nagy. Modifying the calendar was first floated in March. “Trustee Shipka has had a bee in his bonnet about this for quite a while, but the board decided it needed some public input,” said Colburn.

Panic grips Turkey after powerful quake More than 130 people killed and 350 injured, Turkish PM says Death toll could reach 1,000 due to flimsy housing and size of quake: Officials THE ASSOCIATED PRESS/ANATOLIAN TV VIA APTN

Residents of the city of Van help dig survivors out from the rubble after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake in eastern Turkey yesterday. “There are many people under the rubble,” said Veysel Keser, the mayor of the district of nearby Celebibag. “People are in agony. We can hear their screams for help.”

Cries of fear and horror filled the air as a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey, killing at least 138 people as buildings pancaked and crumpled into rubble. The death toll was expected to rise as rescuers sifted through the ruins and reached outlying villages. Tens of thousands fled into the streets screaming or trying to reach relatives on cellphones as apartment and office buildings cracked or collapsed. As the full extent of the damage became clear, survivors dug in with shovels and even their bare hands, desperately trying to rescue the trapped and the injured. MOHAMED KOHAIL CASE

“My wife and child are inside! My four-month-old baby is inside!” CNN-Turk television showed one young man sobbing outside a collapsed building in the city of Van. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at least 93 people were killed in Van, 45 died in the city of Ercis and about 350 were injured. An unknown number of people were still trapped, he said. Up to 80 buildings collapsed in Ercis, including a dormitory, and 10 buildings were destroyed in Van, the Turkish Red Crescent said. People in Van and Ercis lit campfires, preparing to 2007, though his sentence was overturned and he is awaiting retrial. Supporters say he had several operations this summer for chronic tuberculosis and is receiving inadequate health care in jail. Deadly ground The hardest-hit area was Ercis, a city of 75,000, close to the Iranian border, which lies on one of Turkey’s most earthquake-prone zones. Van, about 90 kilometres to the south, also sustained heavy damage. Highways caved in and the airport was damaged, forcing flights to be diverted. U.S. scientists recorded more than 100 aftershocks within 10 hours of the quake, including one with a magnitude of 6.0.

Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos speaks to Metro on his country’s efforts in the war on drugs He points to drug legalization as a means of stopping violence

COLOMBIAN PREZ:

PER MIKAEL JENSEN

@METRO.LU METRO WORLD NEWS IN BOGOTÁ

Juan Manuel Santos, president of the Republic of Colombia.

One of the most prominent fighters in the war on drugs is calling for the world to get tougher. President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos wants world leaders to take a much stronger, more co-ordinated approach in dealing with trafficking narcotics and the use of hard drugs such as cocaine and heroin. In an exclusive one-on-one interview with Metro, Santos says legalizing softer drugs, such as cannabis, could be a way forward, if done globally. “The world needs to discuss new approaches,” Santos says. “We are basically still thinking within the same framework as we have done for the last 40 years.” Colombia’s war on drug cartels has made huge progress over the past 20 years. The killing of notorious drug baron Pablo Escobar in 1993 and then the

arrest and conviction in 2006 of the Rodríguez Orejuela brothers, founders of the Cali Cartel, did much to dismantle the powerful cartels — and spark the decline of drug-related violence that had plagued the country. Santos hopes that the world, too, can build on this success story.

In other countries (Europe and the U.S.), this is mainly a health issue and a crime issue. We need to look at all components, one of them being targeting the assets in this business. But we need to do so on a global level.

Do you think legalizing softer drugs could be a way forward?

We must discuss a new approach, looking at all the components: The profit and the crime that follows drug-trafficking, the fight against money laundering, trade with arms and so on.

Yes, that could be an answer, provided everyone does it at the same time. But somebody has to take the first steps?

Yes, and it won’t be me. Why?

Because, for Colombia, this is a matter of national security. Drug trafficking is what finances the violence and the irregular groups in our country. I would be crucified if I took the first step. How is this different in other countries?

Could Steve Jobs’ biography damage the search leader’s reputation and prospects of Android software? resented an unforgiveable act of betrayal to Jobs, who had been a mentor to Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and had welcomed Google’s CEO at the time, Eric Schmidt, to be on Apple’s board. It suggests that Apple may try to derail Android in court, even if Google obtains more patent protection through its proposed $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility Inc. Google can only hope that Steve Jobs’ final vendetta doesn’t haunt the Internet search leader from his grave. The depths of Jobs’ antipathy toward Google leaps out of Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of Apple’s co-founder. The book goes on sale today, less than three weeks after Jobs’ long battle with pancreatic cancer culminated in his Oct. 5 death. The biography drips with Jobs’ vitriol as he discusses his belief that Google stole from Apple’s iPhone to build many of the features in Google’s Android software. The perceived theft rep-

LIFE’S NOT A BEACH AT CITY HALL URBAN COMPASS

I wonder what keeps Mayor Mandel’s head from exploding. I don’t always agree with TERENCE HARDING what he wants, but there are METRO EDMONTON some initiatives he has championed that I do support. Unfortunately, they often come to naught, but it’s certainly not his fault. Given the brouhaha surrounding the downtown arena debate, you might have missed the administration’s response to his spray park and beach idea for Hawrelak Park. A beach, even an artificial one, would be a wonderful addition to our city. He thought it would be good for kiddos who can’t get to a lake. That was visionary thinking. The mayor figured we could make one for less than $5 million. That’s not chump change by any stretch of the imagination. But spending tax money on “So what price creating something tag does the civic innovative that would bring pleasure to a lot of administration Edmontonians seems like a come back with? good investment to me. But no such luck. Well, they were So what price tag does able to change the civic administration the mayor’s come back with? Apparently it’s all about keeping the water clean from goose poop. The end result? The mayor says forget it. No surprise in that. I don’t think anyone would agree to a $60-million price tag. So what does this say about the ever-swelling ranks of city employees who also told the mayor it was impossible to make a section of the North Saskatchewan safe for swimming? I think what it says is that they are creatively bankrupt. I bet there is someone or some group in this city that could come up with an approach to a beach and spray park that was within the mayor’s budget. If I were mayor, I would start planning for a thorough third-party evaluation of the civic administration and its activities. I would mandate a study that determined where we were getting value for money and what areas could be provided by the volunteer or private sectors. Maybe that would make every civic employee abandon mediocrity and commit to excellence in all that they do.

Worth Mentioning One of Henrik Holgersson’s friends laughed in his face when he told him he was going to spend the better part of 2011 as a stay-at-home dad. “What kind of a man are you?” the friend asked Holgersson, who works for an event-management company. Holgersson took out 240 days of parental leave paid for by the government while his girlfriend, Jenny Karlsson, went back to her job as a real estate agent, after eight months at home with their son Arvid. “To take care of Arvid is a real fatherly thing to do. I think that’s very masculine,” said Holgersson, 34. Holgersson’s experience isn’t unusual in Sweden, largely because the government encourages dads to stay at home with their newborn through a parentalleave policy that is among the most generous in the world. While more than a dozen countries now offer paid paternity leave, usually for a couple of weeks, Sweden subsidizes such leave for up to 14 months.

Osbourne’s alright New documentary put together by Ozzy’s son Jack details rocker’s journey to sobriety FRANK MICELOTTA/THE CANADIAN PRESS

Jack Osbourne says he doesn’t worry anymore about the well-being of his dad, heavy metal megastar Ozzy Osbourne. “Motorbikes can’t kill him, drugs can’t kill him,” he mused in a recent phone interview from his parents’ California house. “He’s one of these guys where he’s going to be, like, 900 years old still complaining about everything and laughing. We joke that he’s going to outlive me.” The British rocker’s astounding ability to endure decades of hard partying, reckless stunts and heavy drug and alcohol abuse is one of the main themes of God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, which will screen at participating Cineplex Entertainment theatres in Canada on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. ET. “There’s only a handful of people that have done what he’s done and lived to tell the tale,” said Osbourne, 25, who produced the documentary. The film opens with shots of a 60-year-old, longhaired Osbourne — clad in all black and purple-tinted glasses — in his dressing room jumping rope, riding a stationary bike and doing stretches as part of his preconcert warm-up routine. As we soon learn, the socalled Prince of Darkness is now more than five years sober — the longest stretch he’s spent in recovery. years ago. When his parents gave the OK, he bought cameras, found a co-producer and hired director Mike Fleiss, who is executive producer of The Bachelor. The filmmakers also use archive footage to detail Osbourne’s life, from his poverty-stricken childhood in Birmingham, England to his drug-addled days with Black Sabbath and his time on The Osbournes TV reality series, when his alcoholism was at its peak. Sabbath members say they used to order “cereal boxes” of cocaine to the house and Osbourne — a long-haired prankster who wore heavy, black eye liner and fake fangs onstage —

would drink and do drugs until he passed out. His alcoholism became worse when his dad died and Sabbath famously fired him. Osbourne, of course, eventually bounced back with a new band managed by his wife, Sharon. But his addiction issues plagued him, and his children — Louis and Jessica from his first marriage; and Kelly, Jack and Aimee from his marriage to Sharon — admit in the doc that he wasn’t always a great father. After about a dozen times in rehab, Osbourne — as he explains in the film — finally got the motivation to get sober for good over five years ago, when son Jack recovered from his

addiction issues. “I struggled with it because I don’t want to take credit for what my dad had done,” said Osbourne. “He’s the one who got sober — I just yelled at him — so I always feel awkward when people go, ‘Oh, you helped.’ I go, ‘No, I didn’t. I just had an argument and he kind of lifted himself from it.”’ As we see in the doc, one of Osbourne’s biggest goals when he got sober was to get a driver’s licence — something his addiction issues prevented him from doing until now. “I actually sat outside on the porch looking at his Ferrari Italia, which is, I think, the most amusing thing to me about it,” said Osbourne. “He has not driven me yet, which is really strange, probably because whenever I turn up he’s like, ‘You drive.’ “Even though he’s got his licence and he’s really stoked about it, I don’t think he likes driving.” God Bless Ozzy Osbourne premiered in the spring at the Tribeca Film Festival. Director wanted to release film in character’s native Belgium first Tintin came home to Belgium on Saturday for the world premiere of Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn. Tintin and his creator, the late Herge, were the stars of the show. The movie is rolling out first across Europe and elsewhere before hitting the United States by the Christmas movie season. “To highjack Tintin and bring it to America first, and then release it overseas second, would be something that would not have even occurred to us,” Spiel-

HANDOUT

Who was the Bard? Director Roland Emmerich takes on the literary establishment with his new film that questions whether Shakespeare really wrote all those plays NED EHRBAR

SCENE@METRONEWS.CA METRO WORLD NEWS IN HOLLYWOOD

While he was busy making millions with disaster films like Independence Day, the Day After Tomorrow and 2012, German director Roland Emmerich secretly had a completely different kind of film in mind — a film about the true authorship of Shakespeare’s plays. And while he does manage to sneak an explosion or two into Elizabethan London, Anonymous is indeed a completely different film than what he’s made before, and he always knew bringing it to the world would be “an uphill battle.”

Do you have your own opinion about the identity of Shakespeare?

I side with the artists and writers. I side with Mark Ryland, Derek Jacobi, Walt Whitman, Henry James, Sigmund Freud, Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles — all these people believed that the man from Stratford didn’t write it. The problem with this whole thing, anyway, is there’s the literary establishment — the educators, the professors, the school teachers and all these people who write books about the man from Stratford. They’ve devoted their whole lives, and now the Master of Disaster comes along and makes this movie — maybe I’m the antichrist, we don’t know

yet. They’re thinking I am. But whatever it is, they have to bedevil me, they have to kind of think this is all nonsense, but it isn’t. And it’s an uphill battle, I knew that going in. What made you want to take on this subject?

The orthodox scholars have a huge problem with the work of Shakespeare. How do they want to explain that? How can a commoner write only about the point of view of an aristocrat? Why is there so much poetry? It’s very hard to believe that it was written by a guy who was a younger man who was just coming to London as a commoner. The whole thing just does-

Anonymous presents the controversial theory that it was the Earl of Oxford who penned Shakespeare’s plays.

n’t make sense. We wanted to just show another version of it, just an alternate history. The last time we spoke, you were casting this film. How is it to show the finished product to the world?

It’s a little nerve-wracking, but it’s always nervewracking whenever you make a movie. You have to show it, you know? I actually do movies mainly because I want to see them, but films are so expensive, you have to show them to people. Lots of people!

And that’s always nerve-wracking for me because I’m just afraid that they’ll throw tomatoes at me or something. It’s not your usual subject matter.

Yeah, it was very risky to make, because boy if I would f--- that one up, then people would say, “Oh, my God. Do we need that?” But I think we did a pretty good job, so hopefully the people will not say that. But it was just a pleasure to work with these incredible actors. I had on

this film the freedom to cast whoever I wanted, and because of that it was really a joy to do it. Also, it was the first movie I did in Germany in 20 years. I chose Germany because I felt most at home there and I know a lot of people there and I have a great group, which could be all Germans because I speak German. How did the mostly English cast feel about that?

They thought we were kind of like Hobbits who speak in their secret language, you know?

A new study “After a year, babies will only need help with foods like yogurt,” says Dr. Rana Conway, author of Weaning Made Easy.

A new study by Dr. DeKun Li of Kaiser Permanente in California, suggests high blood pressure during early pregnancy is what raises the risk of major birth defects — not the medicines used to control the condition, as previously thought. For years, women were warned to avoid drugs called ACE inhibitors during later stages of pregnancy to avoid the possibility of birth defects. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The great spoon-fed vs. baby-led weaning debate Once you master milk-feeding your infant, it’s time to think about solids Parents often choose between spoon-fed and ‘baby-led’ weaning methods Consider this: combine both EMMA E. FORREST

LIFE@METRONEWS.CA METRO WORLD NEWS

With your first-born, it feels like every time you think you’ve mastered one baby-rearing challenge, you’re set with the next. Just when you’ve stopped fretting about how much milk your growing infant is drinking, you’re faced with anxieties about when to start feeding her solids,

whether the meal is nutritious enough and if she’s going to actually eat it. There are two major approaches to weaning: the traditional spoon-fed method (where the parent is in control), and the modern ‘baby-led’ weaning (where the baby learns to feed him or herself). “With first babies, moms often lack the confidence to combine the two methods,” says Dr. Rana Conway, author of Wean-

ing Made Easy. There are advantages to both. Spoon-feeding allows parents to control how much their baby eats and mix new flavours in with favourites. Knowing that dinner is going to end up in your baby’s belly rather than the floor is reassuring for parents whose sanity depends on regular nap-, feed- and bed-times. Meanwhile, baby-lead weaning is convenient for parents who don’t have

time to prepare separate meals and there’s no danger of overfeeding (although it can be messier than spoon-feeding). “The advantage is that families can eat together and all have the same meals, so babies get used to eating the food you do,” says Conway.” Combining methods is easy, says Conway. “The balance between spoonfeeding and self-feeding ... changes over time,” she

says. “Most babies need spoon-feeding to start, but it’s also vital to give them something to try to eat with their fingers. This means they’ll be getting nutrients they need, but they can also learn about real food,” Conway says. “After a few months, selffeeding takes off and by a year most babies will only need help with foods like yogurt. It’s about taking a balanced approach and seeing what works.”

Is silicone bakeware eco-friendly and safe? Rebecca, Calgary

LINDSAY COULTER GREEN@METRONEWS.CA

It’s hard to say if there’s a dark side to these brightly coloured cookie sheets and spatulas. You won’t dig up a lot of safety information about silicone … yet.

Health Canada says, “Silicone rubber does not react with food or beverages, or produce any hazardous fumes.” But Health Canada also stands by the rationale that the fact that lab rats exposed to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were likely to get cancer doesn’t mean non-stick products necessarily cause cancer in humans. Silicone is a synthetic rubber that contains

bonded silicon and oxygen. It’s a natural element that is abundant in sand and rock. Silicone bakeware is known for its heat-resistant and rubber-like qualities, and is safe for the oven and freezer. It is touted as being stable or inert, not changing the flavour or releasing odours that might affect food quality. Not only is it believed to have low toxicity and thermal stability, it’s also

easy to clean and is nonstick. One safety tip I repeatedly came across is to use food-grade silicone products at recommended temperatures — about 220 degrees C or 428 degrees F. When it comes to ecofriendliness, silicone bakeware allows you to replace disposables like paper muffin tins and parchment

If you ask, I could probably list about a dozen or so that claim to be the next Hunger Games, said Bourdon-King, who will turn 25 next month. “Publishers are really aware of the broad appeal that young adult fiction can have, not just to readers of 12 to 16, but to readers in their early 20s, to middleaged moms, to retired people that just want a really great read. “There’s been a lot of just really stellar fiction

that’s been coming out, geared to young adults, but really the writing is so exceptional that it appeals to all ages. Geoffrey Taylor, director of the International Festival

of Authors in Toronto, said there are various levels of reading ability — and books aimed at teens could potentially appeal to those aged 10 to 50. “Take a look at the Lemony Snicket series. Those were books that were written for children, but parents liked reading them because there was double entendre and everything else in the book. So they became enjoyable for parents to read to their kids. But books don’t have to be labelled “young adult to be suitable for young readers. Teens will just skip over the parts they don’t like in adult fiction, or read fast through certain sections, Taylor said.

“I can remember reading Great Expectations when I was younger, and then when Lloyd Jones’ book Mister Pip came out a (few) years ago, which referenced Great Expectations, I reread Great Expectations and I found that as an adult reading, I got more out of it than I would have as a younger reader. Forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs is known for the TV show Bones and her crime novels featuring the character Temperance Brennan. She will be introducing her second novel Seizure in the young adult series Virals, which follows Brennan’s teenage niece Tory, a science lover. THE CANADIAN PRESS

There’s a lot of buzz on the street about Chatters Hair and Beauty Salons. “We now have 106 stores from Newfoundland to B.C., founder Ken Fisher tells me proudly. Growing up on a farm in Saskatchewan, Fisher was influenced by his hard-working father and inspired by his hair stylist sisters. The early days were hard but rewarding. “We worked 12 to 18 hour days and I travelled up to 9,000 kilometres a month visiting stores and stocking shelves at night. Fisher says the key to any business is surrounding yourself with the right people. His turning point came when he partnered with Jason Volk and the two pushed Chatters to the next level. “I don’t think you’ll ever find one individual that takes a company over the top. DENVER QB TIM TEBOW. IN HIS FIRST START THIS YEAR, TEBOW RALLIED THE BRONCOS WITH TWO TOUCHDOWN PASSES IN THE FINAL 2:44 OF THE FOURTH QUARTER TO FORCE OVERTIME, AND MATT PRATER’S 52-YARD FIELD GOAL GAVE THEM AN 18-15 WIN YESTERDAY OVER THE STUNNED MIAMI DOLPHINS.

Derek Holland allowed two hits over 81⁄3 innings, leading the Texas Rangers to a 4-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals last night that evened the World Series at two games apiece. “I was very focused. I knew this was a big game for us,” Holland said. “I had to step up and make sure I was prepared.” Hobbled Josh Hamilton put Texas ahead with an RBI double in the first inning. Then Mike Napoli broke it open with a threerun homer in the sixth on the first pitch from reliever Mitchell Boggs, who came in after loser Edwin Jackson walked his seventh batter. Holland walked Rafael Furcal with one out in the ninth, and Neftali Feliz got two outs, including Albert Pujols with two runners on. Game 5 is tonight at Rangers Ballpark, a rematch of the opener, when Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter topped C.J. Wilson. restored some of the pitching dominance of the first two games. Holland, 2-0 in 10 career post-season appearances, allowed only four baserunners: Lance Berkman doubled in the second and singled in the fifth, and Nick Punto and Furcal in the sixth and ninth. Holland struck out seven. He got assistance from third baseman Adrian Beltre, who made a leaping

catch on Furcal’s liner starting the game. Jackson went to threeball counts on four of his first 10 batters but mostly escaped trouble with the help of some long outs — four flyouts at or just in front of the warning track. He walked Nelson Cruz and David Murphy with one out in the sixth, and Napoli greeted Boggs by sending a 95 mph fastball just inside the left-field foul

pole, about 10 rows deep. In their first-row seats, former president George W. Bush and Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan exchanged a high-five. On the mound, Boggs kicked and grimaced. Jackson gave up three runs and three hits, striking out three, and threw just 59 of 109 pitches for strikes. He didn't allow a hit after the second inning. Following his 5-for-6 per-

formance with six RBIs in Game 3, Pujols grounded out and fouled out in his first two at-bats, coming up with no runners on base. After getting pounded Saturday night, Texas was hoping to become the first team to tie the Series 2-2 since the 2003 Florida Marlins against the New York Yankees. The Rangers had not lost consecutive games since Aug. 23-25 against Boston. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Falcons might’ve found their groove in Motown. Matt Ryan ran and threw for touchdowns to give Atlanta a double-digit lead in the first half, and the Falcons held on to win 23-16 in Detroit yesterday. The defending NFC South champion-Falcons (43) won consecutive games for the first time this season because they finally played well in all three phases on the same day. “Good teams go on streaks,” Atlanta coach Mike Smith said. “You can’t just keep yo-yoing up and down.” The Lions (5-2) have lost their lustre with two straight losses — both at home — after their perfect start. Their formerly fired-

up fans have started to boo, moan and groan. “We don’t deserve their cheers if we’re going to play like that,” Lions guard Rob Sims said. “It’s just that simple.” The Lions had a chance to get Ford Field back on their side. But on Detroit’s final drive, a pass-interference penalty against Atlanta was overturned because instant replay showed defensive tackle Corey Peters had slightly grazed the ball. “I didn’t see the tip, but the guys in the booth were in my ear about it right away,” Smith said. “With less than two minutes, we had to rely on the officials, but they did a great job. They didn’t let the Lions snap the ball, so the replay official could get a good look, and they made the right call.” Instead of having the ball at the Falcons 26, the Lions were backed up to the 41 and Matthew Stafford threw an incomplete pass on the next play to turn it over on downs. Ben Roethlisberger threw 95 yards to Mike Wallace for the longest pass play in Steelers history and Pittsburgh went on to hand the Arizona Cardinals their fifth consecutive loss 32-20.
