HOW DOES HARPER HARVEST CANADIAN WHEAT?
LIKE THIS.
Prime Minister Harper wants to get rid of the Canadian Wheat Board by this Christmas. Which is odd, considering he never consulted with a single wheat farmer. If he had, he would have discovered 62% of wheat farmers want to keep it. Independent wheat farmers negotiating directly with giant American food conglomerates is a recipe for failed farms, lower prices for farmers and ultimately, foreign control of a Canadian industry. By ramming this legislation through Parliament without any debate, Harper hopes he can make the Ä UHS KLJPZPVU [V ZOPM[ [OL WYVÄ [Z HUK JVU[YVS VM ^OLH[ MHYTPUN MYVT *HUHKPHU MHYTLYZ [V T\S[PUH[PVUHS corporations from the U.S. Stand with the farmers, not the steamroller. Lawyer’s child-porn case remains a secret
Royals.
Few details coming out from convicted lawyer’s trial due to publication ban An Ontario lawyer has been convicted of possessing child pornography and given permission to resign from his profession. It’s believed to be the first time that’s ever happened in Ontario. But because of a publication ban imposed by a judge in his criminal case in Brampton in December 2009, there is almost nothing more you can know. We can’t tell you why the ban was imposed in the Ontario Court of Justice, who asked for it or whether there was opposition. We can tell you his name is Howard Baker, only because the law society included his name on its website when he resigned from the profession. We can’t tell you whether Justice Louise Botham wrestled with whether to take the drastic step of shrouding the case in secrecy. We can tell you courts are meant to be open and this kind of ban is extraordinary. But we can’t tell you whether Justice Botham followed principles the Supreme Court of Canada has told judges to consider when confronted with a request to ban publication. We can’t tell you whether the judge insisted on seeing evidence
Judge’s take Ban. We can tell you we contacted Justice Botham and asked if there was further documentation that could explain the reason for the ban and what it covers. Response. that a ban was necessary to ensure the fairness of a trial and whether that justified infringing on freedom of expression. We can tell you that Nadia Liva, the lawyer’s lawyer, told the Toronto Star by email that she and prosecutor Marquis Felix and Botham talked about a ban in the judge’s chambers beforehand and “it was agreed by all that the publication ban, in this case, was warranted.” We can’t tell you whether Botham considered alternatives to a ban. Owner of Amazing Party and Costume Store offering ‘reward fund’ for tips leading to an arrest Speaking outside his deserted, besieged store guarded by police tape yesterday morning, Shawn Hamilton could barely contain his frustration. “If this is a personal vendetta against me, come to me. Don’t threaten my business and my employees,” said the owner of the Amazing Party and Costume Store, his voice rising as he spoke to a throng of reporters. “Don’t terrorize my customers who have been coming here for 19 years. ... Don’t terrorize my family, my wife and four kids.” A series of explosive packages has been discovered in the store since Friday. It was open periodically on the week-
end, but closed Monday morning after an employee discovered a fourth device. The fifth, sixth and seventh were uncovered by Toronto bomb squad officers Tuesday. The organized-crime unit is investigating how the packages, which were sophisticated enough to cause serious bodily harm or death, got into the store, just off the Gardiner Expressway at Islington Avenue. Hamilton is imploring the responsible parties for what he calls “business terrorism” to step forward. He’s injecting $10,000 and soliciting further donations from businesses and suppliers. Black pets often last ones adopted Shelter workers say that black dogs and cats are often the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized. No data on adoptions by colour is kept but officials say there is a considerable amount of anecdotal evidence that supports this conclusion. The main reason for this reluctance? Potential owners often think black is boring.

No helping hand from school boards VINCE TALOTTA/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Grade 12 student Annie Anderson is frustrated that the York Region transit strike means she must walk five kilometres, take cabs or get rides from her mom or friends’ parents to and from high school.
‘It’s not financially feasible’ to offer teenagers rides on school buses amid the York Region transit strike, says a Catholic board spokeswoman The ongoing transit strike has left many high school students in York Region struggling to get to class. What with arranging rides or long walks to school, and even taking costly cabs, some parents wonder why the York public and Catholic school boards won’t step up and let their kids hop on school buses instead. “They were so inflexible and said there was nothing they could do,” said Anne Anderson of Aurora, who approached the York Catholic board to ask if her daughter could take the school bus, provided she walk to the closest stop. “I thought that was intolerable. ... Why can’t they cooperate from their end and offer bus service temporarily?” asked Anderson. The strike by 560 York Region Transit and Viva drivers and mechanics, now in its second week, has left most of the region without
Feds to welcome more skilled workers CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION CANADA
Immigration Minister Jason Kenney plans to hold immigration levels steady next year, but the mix of immigrants will change. There will be more skilled workers — especially white-collar workers — as well as higher numbers of refugees, parents and grandparents, Kenney told reporters after tabling his 2011 annual report.
But there will be fewer spouses and dependent children, and fewer live-in caregivers, Kenney added — not because Ottawa doesn’t want them, but because they are not coming in numbers as large as in the past. Kenney tabled his 2011 annual report and it shows Ottawa wants to accept between 240,000 and 265,000
newcomers in 2012 — despite pressure from the opposition NDP to gradually raise the levels in order to deal with expected labour shortages in five years’ time. The number of so-called “Canadian-experience class” immigrants will rise to about 7,000, Kenney said. That’s up from 6,500 in 2011. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Late arrivals in York Region high schools rose to 8,270 in the week ending Oct. 28, up from 7,800 the previous week. service. With most high school students relying on public transit, principals have been directed to go easy on teens who are late or miss classes. But both the Catholic and public boards, which share buses, say offering rides temporarily is out of the question. Ross Virgo of the York public board said he realizes many families are “deeply inconvenienced by this transit labour dispute. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to be able to add or augment school bus transportation.”
High school students who live more than 3.2 kilometres from school and in an area not serviced by public transit are eligible to take the school bus. So far, the York board said, the strike hasn’t affected absences; they have actually dipped slightly. But late arrivals have soared. For Anderson, a single mom, the strike has proved difficult. She’s had to start an account with a local taxi company for the times her daughter Annie can’t do the 35-minute walk or find a ride to or from school. It’s a $17 tab one way from their home to St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School. Anderson expects kids simply won’t show up for classes as the weather gets colder. Virgo did not wish to speculate if the board would revisit the school bus issue should the strike drag on. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Muslim franchisees taking Popeyes Chicken to court after chicken supply replaced at Toronto restaurants A group of Muslim restaurant owners is fighting fastfood chain Popeyes Louisiana Chicken in court over the right to sell handslaughtered Halal meat for religious reasons. The battle in Ontario court comes after the Atlanta-based franchise moved to replace the chicken supply with machinekilled birds. Talks delay power plant pledge

TANYA TALAGA/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Discussions are ongoing, but relocation will happen: Premier The Liberals are having a hard time getting rid of their gas pains. Premier Dalton McGuinty admits his new government is powerless to quickly stop construction of a Mississauga gas-fired power plant cancelled just before the Oct. 6 election. Yesterday, he conceded it will take time to actually halt the building of the electricity plant located near Sherway Gardens. “We are working on it. It has been a little bit more complicated than we originally anticipated, but we will relocate that plant, McGuinty told reporters. The controversial plant is in the swing riding of Mississauga South, where polls suggested cabinet minister Charles Sousa was in a dead heat with his Progressive Conservative challenger. Pilot erred, a hockey team died
MAXIM SHIPENKOV/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILES
Brakes activated during takeoff Inadequate training also cited Pilot error caused a plane crash in central Russia that killed an entire hockey team, investigators say. The Russian Yak-42 jet was doomed when one of the two pilots accidently activated the wheel brakes during takeoff on Sept. 7. The pilots then pulled the plane up too sharply in a desperate attempt to take off, the investigators said yesterday. The 44 dead included 36 players — many of them former NHL players — Canadian-born head coach Brad McCrimmon and staff of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team. The only player who lived after the crash later died of burns. A flight engineer was the sole survivor. Lead investigator Alexei
Stars perish Among the dead was assistant coach Alexander Karpovtsev, one of the first Russians to have his name etched on the Stanley Cup as a member of the New York Rangers. Also killed was Pavol Demitra, who played for the St. Louis Blues and the Vancouver Canucks.
Morozov said one possible reason the pilot still tried to take off was a fear of reprisals from employers. Experts say when Russian crews abort takeoffs, make second runs or divert planes they risk losing bonuses as carriers focus on cutting costs.
Homage to hockey stars: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev pays his last respects in September at the site of the plane crash near Yaroslavl, on the Volga River about 240 kilometres northeast of Moscow.

Growing up in King City wasn’t all Greek to George Greece’s Prime Minister George Papandreou visited Yonge Street, played basketball, went to concerts at Maple Leaf Gardens during Canadian years COURTESY OF KING CITY SECONDARY SCHOOL
Forty years ago, few knew that King City, a sleepy, rural town north of Toronto, housed the headquarters of a Greek resistance group. But it was there that Andreas Papandreou, a political exile and theneconomics professor at York University, orchestrated the Panhellenic Liberation Movement, a group dedicated to the overthrow of the ruling military junta. For six years, he and his family, including George Papandreou, his thenteenage son and now Prime Minister of Greece, plotted a political comeback. After their North Ameri-
can interlude, the socialist Papandreous would dominate politics in Greece. The story of the Papandreous’ Canadian connection begins in 1967, when Andreas and his father, a former prime minister of Greece, were arrested in a military coup. Andreas left the country with his thenwife, Margaret, and children, George, GayleSophia, Nicholas, and Andreas. “We ended up in Canada in the last year of the decade, under the good graces of the then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who offered political asylum to my father if he wouldn’t overdo his criti-

cism of America — a restraint my father was unable to follow,” wrote Nicholas, a writer, in The Genius of Language: Fifteen Writers Reflect on Their Mother Tongues, excerpted on his website. The family settled in King City. The area was predominantly Anglo-Saxon, home to the Aslops, Al-
monds, Hobsons and Newtons — except for one neighbour, a plaid-clad Quebecois WWII veteran. The home, a stone ranch built into a hillside, served as the headquarters for the Panhellenic Liberation Movement and was visited often by international scholars, students and immigrant Greeks. “Family dinners were like a tightrope of emotions,” writes Nick in a separate essay on his site, “political analyses, anger, nostalgia, planning, despair.” Greece was never far away. He claims there were two serious attempts on Andreas’s life in King City.

Call for referendum angers EU Lawmakers in Greece have begun debating a confidence vote on Papandreou’s government that was called after he suddenly proposed a referendum on the EU bailout deal for the country. The vote could topple his Socialist party government, which only has a two-seat majority in the 300-member Parliament. The debate is scheduled to last for three days, with a vote sometime Friday. Several prominent Socialists are also calling for early elections, angry at how austerity measures are being imposed by their own government during Greece’s financial crisis. Meanwhile, Papandreou was travelling to Cannes yesterday to explain himself to European leaders angry over his surprise referendum on a bailout deal that took months to work out. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Thousands shut down Oakland port
Workers take day off to stop ‘flow of capital’ ‘Share the billions with the millions,’ protesters demand BEN MARGOT/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Legions of Occupy Wall Street protesters in California escalated their tactics beyond rallies and tent camps yesterday and moved to disrupt the flow of goods at the United States’ fifth-busiest port. In New York, Los Angeles and other cities where the movement against economic inequality has spread, demonstrators planned rallies in solidarity with the Oakland protesters, who called for yesterday’s “general strike” after an Iraq War veteran was injured in clashes with police last week. Police estimated that a crowd of about 4,500 had gathered at the Port of Oakland by early evening. Organizers said they
want to stop the “flow of capital.” The port sends goods primarily to Asia, and handles imported products and cars as well. Demonstrators spilled into the Oakland streets in the morning. Officials described the protests as orderly and said no arrests had been made. In other cities, demonstrators targeted other business powers. Nine protesters in Philadelphia were arrested, and about 100 military veterans marched in uniform in New York, angry at their dim job prospects. Parents and their kids, some in strollers, formed a “children’s brigade” to join the Oakland rallies.

Impose ‘Robin Hood’ tax: Anglican archbishop In London yesterday, the leader of the world’s Anglicans, whose church has been swept up in the conflict between bank-bashing protesters and the finance industry, backed a socalled Robin Hood tax on financial transactions as a response to the global economic crisis. Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams
said “it was time we tried to be more specific” in finding answers to the vague demands posed by protesters inspired by New York City’s Occupy Wall Street movement. Williams said a low tax rate — 0.05 per cent on each transaction — could raise more than $400 billion globally each year. A transaction tax, often called a “Tobin tax,” was proposed in the 1970s by the late James Tobin, an American economist and Nobel Prize winner. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SANG TAN/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Israeli PM defends ‘basic right of our people’ to build in Jerusalem SEBASTIAN SCHEINER/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Israel has a “right” and “duty” to build in all parts of its capital, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said yesterday, defending his decision to expand construction in east Jerusalem. Netanyahu has said 2,000 new apartments will be built in the contested area. Officials said the move was an Israeli response to recent unilateral steps by the Palestinians, particularly its acceptance in the UN cultural agency UNESCO. Bribery index knocks Canada Watchdog drops Canada from 1st to 6th for least likely to bribe abroad Canada’s international Boy Scout image has been tarnished with the release of a report that shows Canadian companies are not above bribing foreign officials in order to seal a deal. Transparency International’s Bribe Payers 2011 Index released yesterday shows that Canada, which was tied with Belgium just three years ago for being least likely to bribe, is now tied for sixth place with
Australia. Just this year the RCMP raided the offices of a Calgary-based Canadian mining firm, alleging money was paid to a small-town Mexican mayor to ensure protection from anti-mining protesters. They also searched the Oakville offices of SNC-Lavalin Group in connection with bribery allegations concerning a bridge in Bangladesh. But Transparency Inter-
national, a corruption watchdog, has appealed to Prime Minister Stephen Harper to crack down under the provisions of the Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act, noting that bribery — once an accepted practice in many countries around the world — is being increasingly frowned upon. This fifth edition of the Bribe Payers Index ranks 28 of the world’s largest
economies on the likelihood of firms from these countries offering a bribe when doing business abroad. More than 3,000 senior business executives in 30 countries around the world were asked confidentially for their perceptions of the likelihood of companies, from countries they have business dealings with, to engage in bribery. Police dismantled mother’s story HANDOUT/THE CANADIAN PRESS FILE
Jury watches interrogation video at trial of alleged honour-killers Accused’s story put to test A Montreal woman accused of killing her three daughters slowly changed her tune during a six-hour interrogation, as the investigator tried to appeal to motherly guilt, but he suggested her new story was just as implausible, court heard yesterday. Tooba Mohammad Yahya, 41, her husband, Mohammad Shafia, 58, and their son, Hamed Mohammad Shafia, 20, are all charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of three Shafia sisters and Shafia’s other wife in a polygamous marriage. They have pleaded not guilty. Yahya, Shafia and Hamed were arrested July 22, 2009, and yesterday the jury watched much of the video of the long interrogation of Tooba. RCMP Insp. Shahin Mehdizadeh was brought in to conduct the interview in Farsi. For much of the interview, Mehdizadeh goes over

The three family members were interviewed by police that day, and in videos shown to the jury, they can be seen suggesting that Zainab, who didn’t have a driver’s licence, took the car keys so she could take the Nissan Sentra for a joy ride. The car ending up in the canal was a terrible accident, they suggested.

Soldier who killed comrade testifies at trial ANDREW VAUGHAN/THE CANADIAN PRESS
A former Canadian reservist charged in the shooting death of a fellow soldier in Afghanistan testified in his own defence yesterday, saying he fired his weapon instinctively when he thought someone was pointing a gun at his back. Matthew Wilcox of Glace Bay, N.S., is charged in the death of Cpl. Kevin Megeney at Kandahar Airfield on March 6, 2007. Wilcox, who is facing a second court martial in the
case, told the military court he had neglected to remove a loaded magazine from his nine-millimetre Browning pistol before entering a tent he shared with Megeney, a friend from Stellarton, N.S. Under cross-examination, Wilcox admitted he could have removed the magazine several times before entering the tent, but he failed to do so — a violation of an order that stated Canadian military person-

Optometrist warns procedure could cause glaucoma, impaired vision
U.S. navy and army veterans lead a march of military veterans past the New York Stock Exchange yesterday. BEBETO MATTHEWS/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Vets join the 99 per cent About 100 military veterans have joined the Occupy Wall Street protest at Zuccotti Park in New York.
A California inventor says he has developed a quick and easy laser procedure to permanently change brown eyes to blue without damaging vision. Gregg Homer of Stroma Medical told KTLA.com that he has been working on the technology for 10 years. Even brown-eyed people have blue eyes underneath the brown layer of pigment, Homer said. He uses a laser tuned to a
specific frequency to remove the brown pigment from the surface of the iris. The procedure takes about 20 seconds. When laser energy is absorbed by the eye’s brown pigment, Homer says the pigment tissue changes and then the body sheds the altered tissue, changing brown eyes to blue within two to three weeks. The brown tissue never regenerates.
Dr. Langis Michaud, associate professor in the school of optometry at the University of Montreal, said that the procedure sounds like a bad idea, fraught with risk. Dispersing the pigment could lead to secondary glaucoma. And if the laser used in the procedure is hot, it could harden the collagen in the cornea, causing loss of vision. “I would have the FDA look very carefully at it be-
fore authorizing it and tell patients to ask all the questions,” said Michaud. He said even using contact lenses to change eye colour is risky if not done properly. They need to be fitted by an optometrist. Homer told KTLA.com that tests have shown no signs of tissue damage so far, but made no promises about what the long-term effects might be. Texas judge investigated over beating video Police launched an investigation yesterday into an online video that shows a Texas family law judge profanely berating and re-
peatedly lashing his then 16-year-old daughter with a belt. The nearly eight-minute video shows Aransas County Court-at-Law Judge William Adams violently whipping a girl in the legs more than dozen times and growing increasingly irate while she screams and refuses to turn over on a bed to be beaten. The person who uploaded the video on YouTube signs
the post as Hillary Adams, the judge’s daughter and the target of the beating. The post says the video was filmed in 2004. The judge, during an on-camera interview with Corpus Christi television station KZTV yesterday, acknowledged it was him in the video and said it happened several years ago and that he has since apologized to his daughter.

Mobilizing fight against HIV
Africa. Crisis
Ontario researcher’s project aims to ‘prevent HIV/AIDS one SMS at a time’ ANGELA MULLINS
@METRONEWS.CA METRO CANADA IN LONDON, ONT.
Who would have thought cellphones hold the answer to stopping the spread of HIV and AIDS? Femida Gwadry-Sridhar
did, and she’s taking the first steps to making the idea a reality. The director of I-THINK Research at London’s Lawson Health Research Institute is in the running for a research grant that would create an SMS-based social network
linking Ugandans with resources to ward off HIV and AIDS. The money would also create a mobile application designed to teach people in the South African country about the importance of things such as medication.
Ugandans already have access to mobile messaging and most depend on cellphones as their primary source of communication. So, using messaging to connect people within and across villages is a logical approach.

Van driven through home A woman in St. Catharines says it sounded like a bomb had gone off when a minivan drove through her home yesterday. Rose Watts was upstairs when the van drove

China closer to space station
India. Devotees
Joins the U.S. and Russia as only countries to master space docking China moved one step closer to setting up its own space station early Thursday, with two spacecrafts docking successfully above the earth. The state-run Xinhua News Agency said the unmanned spacecraft Shen-
zhou 8 docked with the Tiangong 1 module now in orbit as China moved ahead with its most ambitious space project to date. China launched its own space station program after being turned away in its repeated attempts to
join the 16-nation International Space Station. That was largely on objections from the U.S., which is wary of the Chinese space program’s military links. In terms of technology, the launch of the Tiangong-1 places China about
where the U.S. was in the 1960s during the Gemini program. But space experts have said that China progresses farther than the U.S. did with each launch it undertakes. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Assange on brink of extradition LEON NEAL/GETTY IMAGES
London judges reject WikiLeaks founder’s appeal Officials say he may take case to Britain’s top court
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, right, arrives at London’s High Court yesterday. Assange lost his appeal to block his extradition to Sweden to face questioning over rape and sexual assault allegations.
Time seems to be running out for Julian Assange, whose long battle to avoid extradition to Sweden over suspected rape and molestation cases appears likely to end in failure unless he can get Britain’s Supreme Court to hear an appeal. Yesterday in London’s High Court, two British judges rejected Assange’s move to block extradition. Assange did not seem angry or visibly upset outside London’s High Court. “We will be considering our next steps in the days ahead,” he told reporters and supporters. The ruling is the latest reversal for Assange, whose secret-spilling organization is on the brink

TV reporter wins lottery live on air Global BC anchors hurriedly search for phone to tell colleague he had won hospital draw’s $2-million prize GLOBAL
The B.C. Children’s Hospital Lottery Foundation held their live draw during a Global BC newscast, only to have the anchors realize that one of their colleagues at the station won the grand prize. The clip is going viral after being featured on The Daily What and Buzzfeed, as the incredible set of circumstances left the anchors searching for a phone to call the winner. “Somebody’s going to have a good day today,” Jeff Parkin, board member for the B.C. Children’s Hospital Lottery Foundation, told reporter Aaran Henn, just before the winning name was chosen. The
Barry Deley
winner was Barry Deley, a sports reporter at the station. The clip shows anchors seeking out a phone to call Deley, who they reached while grocery shopping. When told the news, Deley responds: “You
know people are going to think this is kind of fishy?” After confirming that he had the winning ticket during a commercial break, Deley is presented with his various prize choices, which are a luxury home, a condo in Vancouver or $2 million cash. Deley, who ironically is the one holdout in the station’s sports department’s lottery pool, also said that the cause had a special meaning for him. “Our daughter, Eden, had leukemia seven years ago, and we always try and support the lottery, and it’s unbelievable. I can’t even think straight here.” TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

N.B. says oil exploration company ignored law
U.S. Economy
Bank report says notable weakness in sectors such as federal government, construction, telecommunications Canada’s 1.4 million unemployed were finding it tougher to land better-paying jobs, particularly in the public sector, as the pace of job growth in Canada appeared to slow during the third quarter, according to employment reports released yesterday. CIBC said its Canadian Employment Quality Index, which measures both the compensation and stability of jobs, sat roughly where it was on the eve of the last recession. While the economy generated on average 17,000 new jobs a month during the period, that was down from
Job growth The Conference Board of Canada’s help-wanted index, which tracks job growth, fell for the second straight month in September, dropping 3.3 percentage points after falling 6.1 points in August — wiping out a gain in July before stock market turmoil. The think tank said that points to the loss of about 3,600 jobs in the Canadian economy in October.

er jobs were generally of lower quality, the report added. “The key here will be softer public-sector hiring in general, and public-sector construction activity in particular — a factor that will limit growth in highquality construction jobs in the coming 12 months, CIBC economist Benjamin Tal wrote in the report. The CIBC report said the number of full-time jobs in high-paying industries fell by 0.1 per cent, while the number of jobs in low-paying industries rose by 2.3 per cent. THE CANADIAN PRESS

New Brunswick’s natural resources minister wants an apology from a Calgarybased energy company for what he alleges was a “blatant disregard for rules governing oil and gas exploration. He alleges truck-mounted vibration equipment was used along a highway inside the town’s boundaries a day before council was to consider a request to conduct the testing.

Attention, readers who value their lives: You are in danger! While you read this innocuous-looking sentence (don’t be fooled!), criminals could be violating your home, office or body. That’s because crime is everywhere. It’s in Canadian downtowns, uptowns, upper downtowns, downer uptowns, suburbs, ghettos, bayous, kibbutzes, duck blinds, under the bed, below the gum line, and even in those stubborn and hard to reach places, like Moose Factory. That’s why the Conservathe unreported tive government is getting crime of the — nay, must get — tough on crime. past.” I for one fully support their tough-on-crime agenda (which dovetails nicely with their tough-on-arts and tough-on-environment agenda). As a left-wing media stooge, I’m expected to oppose everything the Conservatives do, but truth is the media and the government are on the same page, crime-wise. We both recognize that the quickest way to get people’s attention is through fear. That’s why so many newscasts begin with some variation on the question, “Should Canadians be worried?” To which the implicit but unspoken reply is “Yes, OF COURSE you should be worried; otherwise, we wouldn’t be bringing you a story about this unprecedented CRISIS, would we, stupid?” So I say increase the number of prisons until they rival the number of Tim Hortons. Criminals won’t dare commit crimes if there’s always a clink within view. Don’t think us crass, though. I think it’s clear that, whether government or media, we scare because we care. We worry about crime because we’re worried about your well-being. By raising your vigilance, we are protecting you from the inevitable crime of the future and the unreported crime of the past. Understand? You win. We care. And, if you don’t remain vigilant, who knows what might happen? Personally, I worry you’ll miss out on something truly scary and horrible, and you’ll be so embarrassed you were out of the loop that you’ll just wish you were dead. And if you do die, we in the media will be there to cover it. Like we care.

photo of the day Letters I was disappointed on how Mayor Ford had reacted to the satirical show This Hour has 22 Minutes. The whole saga would have never happened had the mayor reacted calmly and exchanged a few words with the comedian. He should not have escalated the matter unnecessarily and called the entire army over a trivial matter. Everyone knows or has heard about the satirical show which often makes fun of politicians. We need to laugh sometimes and not just act and behave seriously as if the world will end if we crack jokes. Mr. Ford needs to practise laughing and watching comedies in order to lessen the serious attitude and the need to call the entire military force over a small issue. I wonder who did the mayor call when the kids knocked at his door during the Halloween festivities? I hope he did not ask the Harper government to return the army from overseas and raise the alert threat over the invasion of what he might perceive as “little monsters” invading his private property.

Baby delivered on side of Calgary road A couple in southern Alberta had to keep their collective cool when their unborn daughter decided to enter the world on a busy Calgary street during the morning rush hour. Kresten and Mirjam Rasmussen of Langdon, east of the city, weren’t expecting their fourth child until next week.
They had to jump in their minivan and head for a Calgary hospital after Mirjam went into labour Tuesday morning, but their baby decided to make her grand entrance on the side of Glenmore Trail. Kresten says he only had enough time to pull over and catch the infant — named Augustina — as she was being born. Emergency medical personnel say the harried father managed to stay calm and tied off her umbilical cord with a shoelace and swaddled her before an ambulance took mom and baby to hospital. Mirjam hints they wouldn’t mind having two more children, so long as they’re not born in their van. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Given the way we elevate even the most minor of stars nowadays, it’s hard to fathom just how all-encompassing Grace Kelly’s celebrity was. Hollywood royalty turned actual royalty, Kelly was an icon of stage, screen and fashion. She was “one of the most iconic movie stars ever,” says Noah Cowan, artistic director at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Its new exhibition, Grace Kelly: From Movie Star to Princess, opens tomorrow. In order to encapsulate Kelly’s multi-faceted life — she abandoned her film

career in 1956 to marry the Prince of Monaco — elements of two separate European exhibitions
were brought together. The first collects some of Kelly’s dresses and accessories recently dis-
played at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, including an exact replica of her wedding dress (an
inspiration for the one worn by Kate Middleton) and the Hermès handbag she wore to the announcement of her engagement that became known as a “Kelly” bag. “Right to the end, her influence on style and fashion was quite extraordinary,” says Cowan. The second includes items from Monaco’s Grimaldi Forum exhibit, which help paint a picture of her years as the Princess of the French principality, including home movies that Kelly herself shot on a Super 8 camera. The film, which for years sat forgotten in boxes in the palace, was “the clincher,” says Cowan. Rounding out the retrospective are a slew of items from her years in Hollywood including correspondences between Kelly and legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock and the 1954 Oscar she won for the Country Girl. A quote on the exhibit wall attributed to Kelly reads: “I avoid looking back. I prefer good memories to regrets.” Yet with the wealth of material on display, even Kelly herself would have a hard time not marveling at how much she managed to accomplish in her life. Details Kelly made just 11 movies before giving up acting in 1956. Along with the exhibition the Lightbox is also holding two retrospectives that together feature nine of those films. Considered by many to be the quintessential Hitchcock blonde, Kelly appeared in Rear Window, Dial M For Murder and To Catch a Thief.

No holds barred for Neil Actor resumes his crazy role in A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas NED EHRBAR
SCENE@METRONEWS.CA
METRO WORLD NEWS IN HOLLYWOOD
Neil Patrick Harris has successfully come out of the post-child star wasteland to become one of the biggest stars working today, with a hit sitcom on CBS, gigs hosting every major awards show but the Oscars, and a large fanbase cheering him on. And since it was his jawdropping cameo in 2004’s Harold & Kumar go to White Castle that helped relaunch his career, naturally he was game to come back for the franchise’s third instalment, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas — even if he did get shot and killed at the end of the last film. But you can’t have NPH return from the dead for
another Harold & Kumar film without upping the ante on his atrocious behaviour. When asked if there’s a line he wouldn’t want to cross with his onscreen alter ego, Harris insists it’s far too late for that kind of thinking. “That’s such a tough question because I never thought that any of this would’ve been written,” he says. “I wouldn’t even have imagined that I would be smoking crack and trying to forceably enter a dancer girl. I don’t know where the line gets drawn here anymore.” Of course, Harris’ rising profile — and public coming out of the closet — have become factors since the original film, leaving a lot for the filmmakers to address.
How NPH fits in In A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, the boys stumble upon Neil Patrick Harris rehearsing a Rockette-studded holiday spectacular, complete with show tunes and kick-lines.
Harris was happy to poke fun at his newfound status — he’s referred to as America’s Sweetheart in the film — as long as he got a say in the jokes as usual. That held especially true since Harris’ husband, David Burtka, was along for the ride this time. “I was more cautious and protective of those scenes than any of the others, weirdly, just because I didn’t want it to feel exploitative or like a sight gag and nothing more,” says Harris.
“I know David to be a well-trained Albee actor from New York, and I just didn’t want it to seem like we were using him for some sight gag and then end it. And I didn’t want to leave a bad taste in anyone’s mouth about him on my watch, right?” In the end, Burtka is used to great comic effect — and we’ll just leave it at that for now. As much affection as Harris has for the franchise that helped make him a star again, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a lock for any and all Harold and Kumar adventures in the future. So what would it mean to have the duo hit the big screen without NPH? “I think Jonathan Taylor Thomas would be thrilled,” Harris says with a laugh.
Neil Patrick Harris has been a staple in the Harold & Kumar movies.

For mind-blowing TV, it’s hard to beat The Fabric of the Cosmos. Teleportation, time travel and the theory of a “multiverse” populated by our doppelgangers are part of the cutting-edge physics explored in the fourepisode series on PBS’ Nova. Then there’s engaging host Brian Greene, a physicist who understands plain speaking. Top it off with visual effects that turn complex ideas into eye candy and you’ve got a fun ride, starting last night with What Is Space? and airing on consecutive Wednesdays through Nov. 23. Subsequent chapters include The Illusion of Time, Quantum Leap and Universe or Multiverse? — which explores the startling, tantalizing theory that our universe may be among an infinite number of different worlds that form the so-called multiverse. The challenges of depicting these concepts were as vast as the universe — or maybe the multiverse — and a dazzling opportunity, said Ricardo Andrade, founder and creative director of Pixeldust Studios, which handled the effects. “Everybody loved it because we knew we were involved in something special,” Andrade said of the 20-plus people who ended up working on the project. A majority of each episode in Fabric of the Cosmos includes special effects achieved with green screen in which Greene was filmed in front of a blank screen and techniques including 2D and 3D animation filled in the scenario. Greene, whose book The Fabric of the Cosmos is the basis for the series,

vetted each bit of onscreen wizardry. Among Andrade’s favourite achievements was the Quantum Club, a fantasy night spot where Greene hangs out to explain quantum physics, which rules the universe on the smallest of scales. Using multiple, layered camera shots, the sequence shuffles people around the club in surprising ways — making them vanish, teleporting them from one spot to another — as illustrations of quantum mechanics. When Greene heads to the pool table, the balls stand in for erratic electrons while the host adds some tongue-in-cheek humour. “He hits a cue ball and in the next pool table all the balls fly off,” Andrade said. “Then a second Brian Greene looks over his shoulder, and a third Brian Greene looks over. He sees Brian No. 2 and says, ‘I want to have what he’s having,’ and they wink at each other.” Among Pixeldust’s most challenging tasks was the depiction of the theoretical multiverse. “Some universes look like ours, some are plasma, some are unrecognizable. How do we represent something that is unrecognizable?” Andrade said. The solution was to use blob-like colours “with no shapes, no squares or circles. ... Such a memorable thing, to represent nothing on the screen. That’s crazy, huh?”

‘They wouldn’t let me be me’ Ex-X Factor singer Haygood says he cut deal to exit Former The X Factor contestant Dexter Haygood said he wasn’t pushed off Fox’s new singing contest. He jumped. Haygood was among five contestants eliminated from the show last week. But the rock singer with the James Brown rasp said that what viewers saw didn’t reflect the whole story, including a behind-the-scenes agreement to ensure the swift exit he wanted. According to Haygood, 49, who was part of mentorjudge Nicole Scherzinger’s group of age 30-plus contestants, he told Scherzinger two days before last Wednesday’s live performance show that he was dissatisfied with X Factor. “I wanted to leave the show because I was unhappy that I was unable to be a rock artist. I grew up on rock,” said Haygood, of Memphis, Tenn., who enjoyed the spotlight in the 1980s as frontman for the rock group Xavion, which toured at one point with Hall & Oates. the show’s producers and came back the same day with an offer, according to Haygood: He would be bounced on Thursday’s re-

Reality TV condones bullying: Housewife
Phaedra Parks, left, and Sheree Whitfield are shown in a scene from The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
Fans of Bravo’s Real Housewives cable TV reality franchise often tune in for the catfights and drama, but one Atlanta housewife says the genre may encourage bullying. “Unfortunately I do think that reality TV has spawned a whole culture of bullying,” said Phaedra Parks in an interview with The Associated Press on
Tuesday. “I believe that the behaviour you see on reality TV does not exactly exemplify how adults should be conducting themselves.” Highlights of the series, which has been replicated in seven cities across the U.S., include volatile tempers, verbal outbursts, name calling and allegations of mean tweeting —
and who can forget the infamous New Jersey table flip seen ‘round the world? The last season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey kicked off with a chaotic, physical altercation at a baby christening, while the new season in Beverly Hills, California, has focused on veteran castmates ganging up on and ostracizing new girl Brandi
Glanville, going as far as hiding her crutches while she had a broken foot. Parks said she believes parents need to monitor what their children watch and insists that series like hers are not meant for young viewers. Season 4 of The Real Housewives of Atlanta premieres on Bravo on Nov. 6.

He brings his act to Canada this week before heading to Japan and then boarding the cruise ship once more in December. How are things going for you?
It’s going really good. I just got done at the gym, sort of preparing mentally and physically for the tour. And gearing up, you know? I’m excited. You’re touring with a full band now, right?
Yeah, about four band members, yes. The show is jam-packed. It’s all set up and it’s going to be like a rock concert, but with pop and dance. It’s going to be a really cool, unique show — a lot different, actually, than a Backstreet Boys show. How so?
Well, it’s different for the audience because my concert is almost like a hybrid rock concert. Because a lot of my songs are from the past, things that I’m influenced by. You know, a little bit of rock music, funk. I play guitar, I dance. I’m putting on a show — we’ve got costumes, choreography for the band members, all sorts of crazy stuff.

What’s your experience been in Canada, and what are you looking forward to this time?
Well, my experiences have always been fantastic. The Canadian fans, they love our music and they love what we stand for — it’s sort of like a cult following. (Laughs) It’s like you’re a
part of something that some people don’t want to be a part of anymore, and yet we stand for something. So that’s kind of what the Canadians do, they really love our music and they love pop music. They believe in our talent, and that’s why we keep coming back. How has the response been to your latest solo album?
The response has been amazing. I think, the fans felt that I was giving them back a little bit of what they know so well after a bit of going too far left — being too much rock, going too far from what they know. After this tour you have another cruise on the S.S. Backstreet coming up?
Yes, we have another cruise in the beginning of December, from the first to the fifth. We’re going out, we set sail and we party like rock stars with our fans. It’s kind of off the charts. It’s something you can’t really explain until you go. What do you think of Justin Bieber? And do you have any advice for him?
Oh, everyone loves him. We think that he’s super-talented. We just hope that he can transcend and evolve. That’s the biggest thing — evolution. I don’t really give advice to people because they need to figure it out for themselves. They’re writing their stories, and no one wants to say in the future that someone told you what to do and that’s what happened, you know?

Yet he figures the average country fan won’t hear it. That listener usually picks up her music on the radio, and precious few mainstream country stations will be playing Gill’s music in heavy rotation. As a player with a keen sense of country music history, he’s seen it happen time and again. He was saddened when they stopped playing Merle Haggard and George Jones. He understood why, but that doesn’t make it easier to take. “I just felt like, ‘Don’t stop playing them because of their age,’” Gill said. “If

There are a few artists in the over-50 set who get a pass like George Strait and Reba McEntire. Biebs a baby daddy? A California woman claims that Justin Bieber is the father of her four-month-old child and wants the 17year-old pop star to take a paternity test, according to TMZ. “He told me he wanted to make love to me and this was going to be his first time,” the woman, 20year-old Mariah Yeater, says
in a sworn affidavit, explaining that they met backstage after an L.A. concert in October 2010. “At the time I asked him to put a condom for protection, but he insisted that he did not want to. In his own words, he said that because it was his first time he wanted to feel everything.”

Day three of Kardashian divorce coverage and we’re not slowing down — not when, like Pompei, there are so many unanswered questions out there. But they won’t be unexplained for long as — wouldn’t you know it? — it just so happens Kris Jenner has a new book, Kris Jenner: And All Things Kardashian, that she has to promote! The ladies of The View grilled Mama Kardashian yesterday and whereas Jenner was very honest, she says she doesn’t know what her daughter will do with that $2 million dollar engagement ring. But we do, thanks to a quick chat with etiquette expert extraordinaire, Lizzie Post, co-author of the new book Emily Post’s Etiquette: 18th Edition. And although “etiquette” and “Kardashian” go as well together as “Larry King” and “sex tape,” she does have some good points.
Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries in happier times.
“That’s her ring to keep,” she advises. “It’s really hers and it’s up to her on what she decides to do with it. “She did have a marriage. Just because it didn’t last very long doesn’t mean she didn’t follow through with her engagement.” But, as for the news Kardashian is donating her millions of dollars worth of wedding gifts to charity, Post says that is just wrong, wrong, wrong. “It’s totally inappropriate!” she laughs. “I know her heart is in the right place but the truth of the matter is, the intention behind a wed-
ding gift isn’t to be donated, it was for them to be used as gifts for Kris and Kim and their life together. “The appropriate thing is to return them to the person who gave it — especially if she goes and gets the tax write-off for them.” Post’s last piece of etiquette advice is that everyone (even big-headed gossip columnists like myself) need to be respectful of their divorce. “Everyone should be very open minded and respectful now,” says Post. “I don’t care who you are — having a marriage dissolve after that short of time is very painful,” she adds.

y column last week was about cultivating and mentoring the future leaders of our industry. At the Association, we have created a specific member committee called Young BILDers and it is chaired by two up-andcoming leaders with the intention of pulling some potential out of the woodwork. It will also help to engage our younger members and allow them to build an association that suits their needs. This past week, BILD took that one step further. Showing support for an even younger generation of future builders, we awarded Daniel and David Brutto
M
the BILD Award for Performance in the Private Development Seminar course offered at Ryerson University in the School of Urban and Regional Planning. The brothers are studying in the undergraduate planning program and prepared the best course project assignment and earned the highest grade in the seminar. BILD was invited to hand out the award this year and we attended the ceremony in honour of our late president and CEO Stephen Dupuis, who arranged with university faculty to have the Award named after the Association and directly reward students excelling in the private development course. The Association also has an educational partnership with the University of Waterloo’s School of Planning, where BILD’s past president Leith Moore teaches a land development course. We’ve heard that stu-
dents often mention the course as a highlight in earning their degree. BILD also recently committed to enhancing our contribution to an endowment fund at George Brown College by giving $100,000 over the next 10 years. The endowment has provided dozens of scholarships to students in the College’s Centre for Construction and Engineering Technology, and we know that there are George Brown alumni working in many of our member companies. Awarding excellence displayed by future BILDers is just one way our association cultivates and mentors the leaders of tomorrow. Congratulations to Daniel and David Brutto!
PAUL GOLINI JR. IS CHAIR OF THE BUILDING INDUSTRY AND LAND DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION (BILD) AND CAN BE FOUND ON TWITTER (TWITTER.COM/BILDGTA), FACEBOOK (FACEBOOK.COM/BILDGTA), AND BILD’S OFFICIAL ONLINE BLOG (BILDBLOGS.CA).

Buzzing DUNCAN MCALLISTER
BuzzBuzzHome.com has become ‘the largest online listing of all-new residential construction across Canada’ DUNCAN MCALLISTER
LIFE@METRONEWS.CA
Matthew Slutsky and Cliff Peskin are pioneers in the use of social media in the Toronto real estate marketplace. Co-founders of the BuzzBuzzHome.com real estate web portal, they met back in high school. The unique combination of skills is what makes the formula; Slutsky has a background in land development with luxury condo builder Diamante. Peskin’s on the technical side. He started Nutrition in Motion, a dietary company heavily reliant on technology and sold the company after five years. Owning several commercial properties, Peskin is passionate about real estate and passionate about technology. With nine out of 10 people starting their search online before contacting a real estate agent, Slutsky saw the need for a unique
website. “When we launched there was literally nobody doing any listing of that sort. We list everything from highrise to lowrise, urban and suburban." “We set out and started what is now BuzzBuzzHome.com. We’ve turned into the largest online listing of all-new residential construction across Canada, with clients across southern Ontario, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria.” And they do it all with 14 employees. They recently moved into a new office space in a renovated studio loft in Liberty Village. The busy site updates at least a hundred listings per day. BuzzBuzzHome helps you search, research and connect directly to new condos, new townhomes and new homes. Using map-based results, you can search by price, city, neighbourhood or maintenance fees.
“One of the real things that differentiates us is that we’re a listing of everything; what’s out there, what’s around them, what the comparables are.”
GOT A QUESTION? SEND AN EMAIL TO
A: This is an all too common problem that I have written about before but it is worth repeating myself. The issue you are facing is what is called a latent defect: a problem that is not readily apparent upon inspection but ‘rears its ugly head’ when something like a heavy rain occurs. The whole core of the matter is can you prove that the vendors knew about the existing problem and did they not reveal it? Certainly, the sellers must have been aware of the leaking problem because the signs are there for all to see. However, the problem with this scenario is that the vendors may have addressed the issue and felt that it had been solved (as a matter of fact, I am sure this is what you would hear from them if you made an inquiry). The whole matter of responsibility then revolves around being able to prove this was an existing and ongoing problem that had not been properly fixed and furthermore was covered up by the vendors. This could cost as much as your roof repairs to fight about in court. Unfortunately, you have purchased a problem that has no easy solution. The forced solution from the vendor may be more costly to pursue than the expensive roofers invoice. I suggest you consult with your lawyer before you commence any repairs or lawsuits. The site is completely wiki-based and any builder can go in and directly update their own listings. “One of the real things that differentiates us is that we’re a listing of everything; what’s out there, what’s around them, what the comparables are,” says Slutsky. Clients pay to have a listing featured on the homepage. “So whether a client is featuring their project on our site or not, we’re listing it in an unbiased way. The same information is

shown for a non-featured listing or the featured listing,” he explains. The site has been up for almost three years now and is linked to Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. “We started out as this online listing but we also started to grow our community really socially, so
we’ve got a great blog,” says Slutsky. “Then we took it a step further and started our online forum which has become a really great interactive section. It’s purchasers asking questions and it’s professionals answering questions. It’s a virtual hangout.”
SPONGING UP CLEANING TIPS CHARLES THE BUTLER ASKCHARLES THEBUTLER@ METRONEWS.CA FOR MORE, VISIT CHARLES MACPHERSON.COM
Greetings from Asia! Yesterday, while having lunch at the new Andaz Hotel here in Shanghai, I had the
honour to be with three wonderful local journalists. Lunch started off as most business lunches do with pleasant conversation, but within the first 10 minutes one of the journalists leaned over and said, “Charles, as a professional butler, how do you clean a kitchen sponge?” At first I was a little taken back, and then I laughed. Why did I laugh? Well I started thinking to myself that despite literally being on the other side of the world from home, we all have the same questions in our daily lives.
ISTOCK
So how do you clean sponges? Well, it is rather simple really.
1. Wash you sponge under warm running water with dish soap. 2. Take the wet sponge and twist most of the water out. 3. Put the moist sponge in the microwave on full power for 60-90 seconds. 4. Let it dry on your kitchen counter. Now one thing to always remember: don’t keep
Why clean with a dirty sponge?
sponges for too long. Lucky enough sponges are generally inexpensive and so after a period of time (I change mine pending use every two to four weeks) they should be replaced,
Q. We purchased a 50-year-old house in the summer. There was a very heavy rain in August and we found that the roof above the family room leaked. Upon closer examination of the ceiling, we saw the drywall had been patched and painted over to match. The underpad for the carpeting was also stained in the spot where the leak was happening. We have now had a roofing company in and since the roof is flat, they are quoting several thousand dollars to repair it. It seems like the former owners knew about this problem but did not reveal it before closing. What are our options?
but it is important to clean them daily as they can harbour germs and bacteria.

Bursting with harvest flavours Using oats and rice in this veggie burger gives it a great texture
Eating fresh, local produce is a hot trend, but Marie Lawrence has been cooking with produce from her gardens and buying milk from the farmers up the road since she was a kid. In The Farmer’s Cookbook: A Back to Basics Guide to Making Cheese, Soups and Stews, Curing Meat, Preserving Baking Bread, Fermenting, Pies and Cookies, And More (Skyhorse Publishing Inc., 2011), she includes recipes organized by month to coordinate with a farmer’s calendar. November recipes, for example, include Turkey Burger with Sweet Potato Fries, Vermont Country Sausage, Baked Beans and Pumpkin Cheesecake.

not supposed to. The burger goes great with a slab of cheddar and a slather of mayonnaise, but feel free to top as you see fit.
Preparation: The problem with many veggie burgers is that they try too hard to be hamburgers. Sorry, but they’re not fooling anyone, least of all diehard carnivores. So why not embrace the idea of a veggie burger and make one that tastes and looks like what it is — a burger made from veggies and grains? That was the motivation in creating this harvest burger, a patty bursting with flavour, not to mention onions, red pepper, corn, pumpkin, rice and oats. It won’t fool you into thinking it’s meat, and it’s

Calvillo gets nod for top CFL award again Another year, another outstanding player award nomination for Anthony Calvillo. The veteran quarterback was named the Montreal Alouettes nominee for the award yesterday in voting conducted by members of the Football Reporters of Canada as well as the eight CFL head coaches. Calvillo has won the honour three times (’03, ’08, ’09) and is looking to be the East Division nominee for a fourth straight season. The 39-year-old Calvillo has enjoyed a banner campaign, leading the CFL in passing yards (5,188) and touchdowns (32) while surrendering just eight interceptions. THE CANADIAN PRESS
The East The other East Division nominees include kick-returner/receiver Chad Owens of the Toronto Argonauts, defensive lineman Justin Hickman of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and defensive back Jovon Johnson of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Owens leads the CFL with 3,345 all-purpose yards and became the first player in pro football history to surpass the 3,000-yard plateau in consecutive seasons.

Lupul lights up Devils Leafs forward records hat trick in second period as Toronto wins in N.J. Joffrey Lupul had three goals in a wild second period, his first hat trick in almost four years, to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs past the New Jersey Devils 5-3 last night. Lupul scored three times in a span of 7:22 against Martin Brodeur, who returned to the ice after missing six games with a bruised right shoulder. Joey Crabb and Mihkail Grabovski also had goals for the Maple Leafs. The last time Lupul scored three goals in a game was Dec. 12, 2007,

when he had six points for the Philadelphia Flyers against Pittsburgh. He scored four goals in a West-
ern Conference playoff game for Anaheim on May 10, 2006. Patrik Elias, Darius Zubrus and David Clarkson scored for the Devils, who have lost five of six. Phil Kessel padded his NHL scoring lead with two assists for Toronto (8-3-1). Kessel, off to the best scoring start for the Maple Leafs since 1944-45, has 10 goals and 10 assists in 12 games. Lupul has eight goals this season. He totalled 14 last season in 54 games with the Ducks and Maple
Leafs combined. Elias scored in the second period to give him 93 power-play goals with New Jersey, taking over the franchise lead from former coach John MacLean. Toronto got on the scoreboard first at 8:37 of the first period, when Crabb scored his first goal of the season. New Jersey failed to clear after a mad scramble in front and Crabb was left unattended in front of the net and alertly knocked the puck past Brodeur. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Toronto FC considers playing under dome Toronto FC will decide soon whether their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal match will be played under the roof at Rogers Centre next March. “We’ll probably be making a decision very, very soon,” Earl Cochrane, director of team and player operations, said Wednesday. “Hopefully by the time of the draw (Nov. 8) but certainly in and around there.” Toronto earned the right to host the first leg of the two-game Champions

League quarter-final by finishing second in Group C of the round-robin portion of the tournament. BMO Field on the Canadian National Exhibition grounds is TFC’s home field, but the Champions League match on March 6, 7 or 8 against the team it draws presents a special op-
portunity. “We’re looking at both options,” Cochrane said at a media briefing when asked if the game would be played at BMO Field or Rogers Centre. “The challenges here are obvious.” Weather could be a factor for the game played in Toronto, which will be
against either the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS or Santos Laguna or defending champion Monterrey, both from Mexico. Those teams finished first in their respective groups. Rogers Centre, home of Major League Baseball’s Blue Jays and the Canadian Football League’s Argonauts, has artificial turf and Cochrane said importing a grass field is being discussed should the game be played indoors. Tony LaCava saw player development and a “culture” being changed and a boss he has great admiration and respect for, so even the allure of being offered one of only 30 jobs like it on Earth couldn’t drag him away from the Toronto Blue Jays. “It is about loyalty,” LaCava said of his decision to turn down an offer to become general manager of the Baltimore Orioles and remain the right-hand man of Jays’ GM Alex Anthopoulos in Toronto. “The atmosphere that Paul Beeston (the Jays’ president) has created, it really is a great place to work.” LaCava, a 50-year-old native of Pittsburgh, spurned the Orioles after being offered the top job there on Monday so that he could see through a plan that he, Anthopoulos and Beeston

have set in motion to return the Jays to prominence in Major League Baseball. He saw more money being spent on player development and scouting and another minor league team being added by the franchise. He saw a young team seemingly poised to legitimately contend in a season
or two and he decided to stay. “We’ve very close to something very, very great,” he said in a telephone interview while racing back to Toronto to prepare for the opening of baseball’s free-agent frenzy on Thursday. LaCava, about to enter his ninth season with the Jays, said the loosening of the front-office purse strings and a dedication to developing talent at the youngest minor league levels shows a willingness to help the organization grow from within. And as much as Anthopoulos has hastened that, it goes beyond the young general manager. “When (Beeston) came back, it was like a breath of fresh air. He really inspired us,” said LaCava. Copeland amped for finale Argos receiver hopes to surpass yardage milestone vs. Ticats ‘I’m going to make everyone happy for coming out,’ Copeland says of celebration plans It’s been a miserable season for the Toronto Argonauts and veteran receiver Jeremaine Copeland. Toronto will finish the campaign last in the East Division and miss the CFL playoffs for the third time in four years. And through 17 regular-season contests, Copeland has just 41 catches for 595 yards and no TDs. But the veteran needs just 23 yards receiving to become the 15th player in CFL history to reach 10,000yards. And Copeland can’t think of a better way to achieve the plateau than with a TD grab tonight in a season-ending victory over the arch-rival Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-9).
TICATS
ARGOS
Time: 7:30 p.m. TV: TSN
“It would be awesome if my 10,000 yards came when I scored a touchdown,” Copeland said yesterday after Toronto’s final practice of the season. “It probably would be a big party, actually. “I’d definitely have a lot of fun with it in the end zone ... I think everyone that’s in the (Rogers Centre) will definitely see it.”
Hamilton has already cemented third spot in the East Division and, win or lose, will travel to either Montreal or Winnipeg for the conference semifinal. Earlier in his CFL career, Copeland had the reputation of being a master of end-zone celebrations. He says he’d give the crowd something to remember if he achieves his milestone. “If it comes down to that, I will have a good time,” he said, with a grin. Getting into the end zone consistently has been a big problem this year for Toronto (5-12). The Argos are second-last in scoring (21.4 points per game) and last in touchdowns (29) and
TD passes (15). Toronto will be minus starting quarterback Steven Jyles, who is out with a head injury. He was hurt in Friday’s 27-22 win in Winnipeg on a helmet-tohelmet hit by Bombers’ defensive back Johnny Sears Jr. The CFL suspended Sears for one game on Tuesday. Backup Dalton Bell will start and understands, like many Argos, he is auditioning for a job next season. “You want to play well and keep it fresh in the coaches’ minds for the offseason because that’s a long time for those guys to think,” Bell said.
Argo Jeremaine Copeland will try to become the 15th player in CFL history to reach 10,000 yards receiving tonight.
