More 911 calls to Ford’s home Multiple calls made to police in two-month span Early Christmas morning, police were called to the home of Mayor Rob Ford about a reported domestic dispute. It was the second such call in as many months. On Oct. 25, less than 15 hours after Ford himself called 911 regarding the intrusion of the comedy show This Hour has 22 Minutes on his property, officers from 22 Division were back at the Etobicoke residence on a domestic call. On Christmas, Ford’s motherin-law called police between 4 and 5 a.m. to report that the mayor had been drinking and was taking his children to Florida against the wishes of his wife, Renata.

The Toronto police youth and family violence unit, which handles all domestic disputes, including incidents that are strictly verbal, is still investigating both events. No charges have been laid. An interview request submitted to Ford’s office, which detailed the contents of this story, went unanswered. According to numerous police and emergency-service sources, 911 calls to the mayor’s Edenbridge Drive home are a reality for the South Etobicoke division. Exactly how many calls have been made is unknown. Ford is the city’s chief magis-

trate. The mayor — or a designate acting on his behalf — has a seat on the police board. In fact, four of the seven board members are appointed by city council. Police Chief Bill Blair reports to this civilian oversight board. The chief was unavailable for comment Thursday, according to spokesman Mark Pugash, who said Ford’s position “absolutely” does not put police in a difficult situation. “The procedures don’t take into account the social position or occupation of a person being investigated or charged.” Det. Jacqueline Baus, the detec-

tive investigating the incidents, confirmed both cases are still open, but refused to provide details of either. It is typical practice in a domestic investigation, when an allegation of physical abuse is made, for the police to lay a charge. There is no evidence, as far as Metro is aware, of physical violence in either incident. Through sources, the Toronto Star has heard about a handful of incidents in recent years, but a freedom-of-information request to the police service for a list of 911 calls relating to homes on Edenbridge Drive over a five-year period was only partially granted. for calls were removed. A secondary request filed specifically for Oct. 25 was denied in part because the personal information was gathered “as part of an investigation into a possible violation of law.” When reached at their Etobicoke home this week, which is only a few streets away from the mayor’s, Renata Ford’s parents said the Christmas morning call was all a mistake. “We don’t want to talk about it. Everything OK.... Now is everything OK,” said Henryka Brejniak, who is Polish and speaks some English. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Neither sleet nor snow nor unyielding bureaucrats can keep couples from affirming their devotion on Humber Bridge. Lovers are still hanging love locks along the overpass nearly three weeks after city staffers snipped off the bulk of the mementos. Where more than 40 locks once hung — before parks manager Kevin Bowser got wind of the phenomenon — there were fewer than a dozen Thursday.

Cops held in local man’s death BARTHOLOMEW FAMILY/CONTRIBUTED; INSET: GRENADA BROADCAST PHOTO

Autopsy determined 39-year-old died of brain hemorrhaging, intracranial bleeding, brain trauma in Grenada, says family lawyer Grenadian authorities have detained two police officers in the death of a Toronto man, who was allegedly beaten to death earlier this week. Police Commissioner Willan Thompson also said there isn’t a problem of police brutality on his force, despite two recent deaths where Grenadian police officers were involved. Thompson refused to identify the detained officers, but did say they held a junior rank and haven’t been charged yet in the death of Oscar Bartholomew, who was allegedly beaten up in police custody Monday. He died a day later. Bartholomew’s family is asking for an independent and unbiased investigation into his death. Thompson pledged an unbiased investigation by the Royal Grena-

Oscar Bartholomew, who died in his native Grenada this week, is seen at Niagara Falls two summers ago. He was allegedly beaten by police officers on Monday and tended to at General Hospital in St. David, inset, prior to his death.

Surplus to exceed projection: Sources This year’s City of Toronto budget surplus is higher than the forecast $139 million, sources say — a windfall that would increase pressure on Mayor Rob Ford’s allies to spare threatened city services. Porn theatre can’t put bums in seats Patrons lined the block during the Metro’s glory days in 1980s Going out with a whimper, not a bang BRENDAN KENNEDY/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Newspapers have been writing its obituary for the past 10 years, but the historic Metro cinema in Koreatown — Ontario’s last triple-X movie house — keeps grinding along, despite the best efforts of its owner to offload it. A relic of a bygone era when people watched pornography in public, the Metro is bleeding money every day, with a pile of unpaid utility bills and, often, more bodies on screen than in the seats. In a 2002 interview with the Toronto Star — when owner Karim Hirji first put the Metro up for sale — he said he owed $4 million to creditors. But observers say Hirji has priced the property out

of the market in an attempt to recover his losses. The 5,450-square-foot venue is listed for sale at $3.59 million, or $658 per square foot, which even the property’s broker admits is overpriced by almost half. “The asking price is on the high side,” says Joseph Kang of Keller Williams Real Estate Service.

Its location near the Christie subway station makes it “a prime development site,” says Steven Alikakos of DTZ Barnicke, a commercial-real-estate brokerage. “But the costs of turning the space into something usable are just too much to make it work at $3.5 million.” TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

If cats eat your hamburger, don’t call 911, police say What do hamburger-eating cats, video-game squabbles and an unwanted carpet roll have in common? Chatham-Kent police can’t quite believe it, but people in their southwestern Ontario area apparently thought these were all situations requiring an emergency response. A woman who called 911 because her cats ate her Whopper and she wanted another one earned the dubious top spot on the Chatham-Kent Police Service “Top 10 Silly Calls of 2011.” It’s the third annual instalment of the list. Last year’s No. 1 was a woman who called police to complain that her ex-boyfriend gave her perfume as a gift, when all she really wanted was drugs. “It does surprise me that we’re still getting these ... calls that are so outlandish,” said Const. Michael Pearce. “We don’t want people to stop calling 911 or the police if they need assistance, but we want to make sure that it’s police-related,” he said. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Top 10 silly calls 10. During a snow emergency in early February, a woman called police to complain that snowplows were cleaning her street and making too much noise. 9. A 17-year-old called police to seek advice. He wanted to know if he could disown his mother because she wouldn’t give him money. 8. A man called police because he found a roll of carpet on his front lawn and wanted an officer to attend his residence. He cancelled the call when he found out his wife put the carpet there. 7. A woman called 911 after being denied entry to a local nightclub. She forgot her identification and wanted an officer to attend to verify her name and prove to security staff that she was of legal drinking age. 6. A man called 911 to request an ambulance for a friend. Before the call ended, a man was heard in the background saying, “Don’t worry, I’ll get rid of the dope.”

5. A man called police when he saw a “small lion” cross the road in front of him. He was also quick to point out that he had not smoked any drugs — “that day.” 4. A woman called police to have a man removed from her residence. She no longer wanted his company after they were sharing a sofa to sleep on. 3. A man called 911 to report that his vehicle was just stolen from his driveway. Officers were unable to locate it until they attended his house and found it right where he left it. It turned out the man saw a vehicle just like his drive by and jumped to the conclusion his had been stolen. 2. Police responded to a 911 call when screaming was heard in the background. The investigation revealed that a couple were arguing because the man wanted to play Xbox while the woman wanted to play Nintendo Wii. 1. PARAMEDICS ABUSED Geoff MacBride has been spit at, sworn at, punched, even groped. Abuse is an occupational hazard, says the Toronto paramedic, who is not surprised by a new study showing that most emergency medical service workers have been victims of violence in the workplace. “It’s common.... It’s part of the job,” said MacBride, president of the Toronto Paramedic Association, who has taken to wearing a bulletproof vest because of dangers of the job. New research out of St. Michael’s Hospital shows that more than two-thirds of EMS workers reported suffering verbal and physical abuse within the last year. The study, published in the January issue of Prehospital Emergency Care, found that while the vast majority of perpetrators are patients, abusers also include friends and relatives of patients, bystanders and even co-workers. Lead investigator Blair Bigham said he was most startled by the finding that showed that 26 per cent of respondents reported being physically abused within the last year. “When you think that every four years a paramedic is going to get physically assaulted, that surprised me — that’s a really high number. So I think we really need to drive this research forward to find strategies and interventions that can better protect para-

medics,” said Bigham, an associate scientist at Rescu, based at St. Michael’s Hospital. Rescu is part of the Resuscitations Outcomes Consortium, a large, multinational research collaboration of 10 sites across the United States and Canada. MacBride had no problem coming up with examples of incidents in which he has been abused. Just this past October, he took part in the rescue of an intoxicated man who fell off a boat in Lake

Debate erupts over Bible handouts The decades-old routine of handing out free Gideon Bibles in public schools has sparked renewed passions amid complaints the practice is discriminatory and no longer has a place in a secular education system. The latest flare-up occurred in the sprawling Bluewater District School Board in southern Ontario after a parent’s objection led to the discovery the board had no policy on the issue. Word that Bluewater officials were reviewing the practice in order to come up with a policy provoked a torrent of support for continuing the tradition. “I’m not even a Gideon. Victims were smugglers all under the age of 30 Killings spur angry protests in Istanbul and several cities in the mostly Kurdish southeast Turkish warplanes mistakenly killed 35 smugglers and other villagers in an operation targeting Kurdish rebels in Iraq, a senior official said Thursday, one of the largest one-day civilian death tolls during Turkey’s 27-year drive against the guerrillas. The killings were the latest incident of violence to undermine the Turkish government’s efforts to appease the aggrieved Kurdish minority by granting it more cultural freedoms. Huseyin Celik, a spokesman for Prime Min-

ister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling party, said authorities were still trying to identify the dead, but that most were youngsters from an extended family in the mostly Kurdish-populated area that borders Iraq. Some of the victims were sons of village guards who have aided Turkish troops in their fight against rebels, he said. “According to the initial information, these people were not terrorists but were engaged in smuggling,” Celik said, indicating that Turkey was ready to compensate the victims. “If

there was a mistake, if there was a fault, this will not be covered up, and whatever is necessary will be done.” In Istanbul, police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse pro-Kurdish pro-

testers denouncing the air strikes, the Dogan news agency reported. Dogan footage showed some demonstrators smashing glass panels at a bus stop and others throwing stones at a police vehicle near Taksim square. Plainclothes officers hustled or dragged away several protesters. Kurds, who make up around 20 per cent of Turkey’s 74 million people, have long felt marginalized in the country and many want autonomy in Kurdishdominated southeast Turkey.

SPACE PROGRAM

China reveals its space plans China plans to launch space labs and manned ships and prepare to build space stations over the next five years, according to a plan released Thursday that shows the country’s space program is gathering momentum. China has already said its eventual goals are to have a space station and put an astronaut on the

moon. It has made methodical progress with its ambitious lunar and human spaceflight programs, but its latest five-year plan beginning next year signals an acceleration. By the end of 2016, China will launch space laboratories, manned spaceship and ship freighters, and make technological preparations for the construction of space stations, according to the white paper setting out China’s space progress and future missions.

A former lawyer and veteran activist left disabled by past police mistreatment went on trial Thursday, the third dissident in a week to be prosecuted as China presses a sweeping crackdown to deter popular uprisings like the ones that shook the Arab world. Looking thin and frail, Ni Yulan lay on a bed and used an oxygen machine to help her breathe during the hearing, her daughter, Dong Xuan, said afterward. Dong said she told the court about her mother’s run-ins with police since 2002 and how police beatings left her crippled. Ni is charged with fraud, accused of falsifying facts to steal property. She is also charged, along with her husband, Dong Jiqin, with causing a disturbance at a hotel where they had been detained by police. Ni and her supporters deny the charges and say she is being punished for her years of activism, especially her advocacy for people forced from their homes to make way for

Robbery suspect hands cash to kids: Cops Boston police say a woman suspected of robbing a city bank was caught a short time later handing out dollar bills to children at a park. Police say workers at the Citizens Bank told them a woman walked into the branch just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday,

passed a teller a note demanding money and warned she had a gun. She then left with an undisclosed amount of cash. A cab driver told police that a fare had told him that she just robbed a bank. Police found the suspect, Jasmin Rivera, at the park handing out money. Rivera was ordered to undergo a mental-health evaluation at her arraignment Thursday. A doctor told a judge she has serious mental-health issues. A not-guilty plea was entered on her behalf. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Don’t want a hangover? Then don’t get drunk No one really knows what causes hangovers or how to remedy them One in four people don’t experience hangover symptoms after drinking BRIAN KERSEY/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Attorney Colleen Gorman has a holiday ritual that doesn’t involve buying presents or counting down to midnight: She goes online to look for new hangover remedies she hasn’t tried. She has scratched off those “prevention” pills, vitamins and chugging sports drinks. “My fiancé says I should probably just drink less,” said Gorman, 28, of Chicago. Experts say that’s good advice. “The only way to prevent a hangover is to not get drunk,” said Boston University researcher Jonathan Howland. Still, there are strategies that can soften the blow. Don’t drink on an empty stomach. Food helps absorb alcohol and delays toxic effects. Drink plenty of water before, during and after as alcohol can dehydrate. Hangover remedies include milk thistle, honey, bitters, soda, Pedialyte, cranberry juice and Tabasco sauce. But none has been scientifically proven to work, Howland says. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

In this Dec. 21 photo, Yuma Amador mixes cocktails at the American Professional Bartender School in Villa Park, Ill. One of the school’s teachers, Kim Khan, recommends alternating alcohol with water to avoid that painful New Year’s Day hangover.

Popping pills Some people think popping a couple of Tylenol tablets will help prevent hangover symptoms, but experts warn it can be dangerous. Both alcohol and

acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, are broken down in the liver, and taking them together can cause irreversible liver damage. Sam Zakhari with the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

says aspirin and ibuprofen are safer alternatives. Alcohol can irritate the stomach and aspirin and ibuprofen can cause stomach bleeding, so they should be used with caution, a U.S. government publication advises.

Unemployment among young people is running at 14.1 per cent, and the job picture is unlikely to improve in the coming year, especially for people without work experience, the Conference Board of Canada reports. For the workforce as a whole, the jobless rate is seven per cent, but for people between the ages of 15 and 24, the rate is twice as high, the Ottawabased think-tank says. Youth unemployment traditionally has been high, at least twice that of the workforce as a whole, it notes. But during the 2008 recession the youth jobless rate crept up to nearly two and a half times the average. It has since come

fact that the baby-boom generation is taking longer than expected to retire, the Conference Board notes. And while the labour market is expected to ease by 2015, for many young people that could mean several years of missed opportunities and a delayed start in life. In the short term, Canada’s labour-market conditions are expected to remain uncertain. “The economic outlook, which is going to drive employment, is very risky,” says Pedro Antunes, a Conference Board of Canada forecaster. “We’re in an environment where there is so much risk, anything can happen.” TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

NEWT AND BIG GLASSES IN 2012 THE METRO LIST

Brief perspective on NBA baller Kris Humphries, known prior to this summer for a work ethic that earned MIKE BENHAIM him the starting role and caMETRO reer-high stats for New Jersey last season. He was booed by fans during his first appearance last week because of his breakup with Kim Kardashian, a woman who owes her career to the leaking of a sex tape. Nice lesson for the kids, America. On this day in 1972, Brownsville Station and Sha-Na-Na played a concert in Columbus, Ohio. Their opening act was a youngster named Bruce Springsteen. While he’s still rockin’, the others currently split their time between celebrity rehab and appearances at Casino Rama. Now, 2012 is thought to be the End of Days, but I believe it to be a cataclysmic culmination of the prior year’s events. Hence my predictions for the coming year: Korean spectacle. Kim Jong-il’s son and successor Kim Jong-un will honour dad’s memory by donning a new pair of big-ass glasses. The Situation. A freak thunderstorm will break millions out of an evil spell that has subconsciously compelled them to watch Jersey Shore. Two P’s in a pipe. Lindsay Lohan salvaged a terrible year with the law — and her career -— by appearing on Playboy’s bestselling cover (which also made Playboy relevant again). Sweet emotion. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler marries partner Erin Brady and finally has a son who grows up to be gender-confused but eventually wins Dancing With The Stars. Stained. The girl who tattooed the name of R&B star Drake in huge letters on her forehead eventually sobers up, discovers that she doesn’t even like his music and is confronted with the reality that she now HAS A GIANT TATTOO ON HER FACE! Head of state. Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich will prove himself to be the most competent choice for the U.S. presidency, but they still won’t elect him. Black by demand. Conrad Black is released from prison early for good behaviour, then collaborates with Fruity Loops beatsmith Lex Luger to release a rap album entitled Black is Back, Bitches! Economic microcosm. Pressed to cash in the 100,000-plus credit-card points accumulated over the last 5 years, I struggle to choose between movie passes and a really nice toaster oven. Faceoff. The Winnipeg Jets, the NHL’s darling new team, surprise everyone with a playoff run, meeting the Leafs in the conference final. Just then, Sidney Crosby awakens from his concussion-induced blackout to discover that it was all just a dream. Too much money. Justin Bieber, who bought his friend a car for Christmas, continue his extravagance in 2012 when he leases a space shuttle to take girlfriend Selena Gomez on a weeklong trip to Mars. Fortunately, this equals 50 years in Earth time, so they return just after I die. (OK, so more of a wish than a prediction.) Stay tuned for the results, and may you all experience good fortune in the coming year.

Workers at the historic zoo have to count, measure and weigh the 4,500 animals from 500 species annually to see if they grow correctly and get enough food. The job was easier when the facility opened in 1881 — only 34 animals called the zoo home then. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Synopsis

Well, the weather outside is frightful but the DVD selections are delightful, so why not take a well deserved break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and stay home with some recommendations from the Reel Guys!

RICHARD CROUSE & MARK BRESLIN SCENE@METRONEWS.CA

Frosty-day films Tired of all the holiday-season parties? Why not cuddle up on the couch with a DVD? Crouse and Breslin offer up their DVD picks from 2011 Richard: Mark, the end of the year always offers up great movies for Christmas consumption. Some of the biggest hits of the year, like The Help and The Smurfs, are coming out, but I’d like to suggest an overlooked movie from earlier this year. The First Grader is the story of Kimani N’gan’ga Maruge, an 84-year-old Kenyan villager and ex Mau Mau freedom fighter, and his fight to earn a fundamental right — to get an education. It’s inspirational and an engrossing study in strength and dignity. What will you rent this week? Mark: Yes, DVDs are an excellent way to see some of

the smaller films that flew under the radar this year, although I can’t completely share your enthusiasm for The First Grader. I found the film kind of reductive, although the stellar performance by the elderly lead was captivating. You cannot keep your eyes off him! Another octogenarian, Christopher Plummer, stars in Beginners, which I want to see again. One of my favourite films of the year, it’s an elliptical romance involving a depressive slacker and his girlfriend, with Plummer as the dad who comes out of the closet at 75. Seen it? RC: I have! Plummer is fan-

tastic, but I have to say my two favourite performances in that movie belonged to Mélanie Laurent and Cosmo, the Jack Russell terrier. If there was an Academy Award for cute, they’d both win. Another movie that should have gotten more attention is Warrior. Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton play estranged brothers brought together by ultimate fighting. It’s hard going stuff, but in its own way it was a heartfelt, inspirational story. Like Rocky times two. MB: Haven't seen it, Richard, so thanks for the tip. The antithesis of Warrior might be Magic Trip, a documentary of found

footage from Ken Kesey’s band of Merry Pranksters bus trip across America in 1964. A real time capsule of proto-hippie peace and love, I’m giving it as a gift this season to any of my friends who think they remember the Sixties. And I never saw Apollo 18, which combines mockfootage, paranoia, and scifi. I’m hoping to love it! RC: I missed that one as well. But in keeping with the spacey theme, I can recommend Another Earth, a low-fi sci-fi story about a second earth and the redemption it offers. It’s more about ideas than special effects, but it is worth a gander.

Bambi, Forrest Gump and Hannibal Lecter have at least one thing in common: Their cinematic adventures were chosen by the Library of Congress to be preserved in the world’s largest archive of film, TV and sound recordings. The Silence of the Lambs, Forrest Gump and Bambi were chosen this year for inclusion in the National Film Registry. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Dark Knight Rises

We’re just as curious to see how Christopher Nolan rounds out his trilogy of Batman films — he insists this is the final chapter — as we are to see if the Dark Knight Rises can come close to matching the $1 billion 2008’s the Dark Knight pulled in worldwide. Christian Bale is back as Batman, along with Michael Caine as Alfred and Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon. They’re joined by newcomers Tom Hardy (as Bane) and Catwoman Anne Hathaway. (July)

With the Twilight saga wrapping up at the end of 2012, all eyes are on Lionsgate’s adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ bestselling teen dystopia to fill the void. There are three books in the Hunger Games series, but if the first movie is a hit, don’t be surprised if the latter chapters start getting split up into multiple films. Jennifer Lawrence stars. While he’s gone off to make all sorts of different types of films — most of them starring Russell Crowe — Ridley Scott is still revered for his pair of sci-fi masterpieces, Alien and Blade Runner. With Prometheus, he returns to the genre with a big, spooky space flick that ties in somehow to the Alien franchise — just don’t call it a prequel. And if that’s not enough to get you excited, how about a cast including Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba? June.

Drink and be merry While alcohol most often grabs the spotlight during holidays, mocktails can be tasty too PRVIDED

Drinks are as much a part of the holidays as food. When entertaining a large group, do some research and choose one signature alcoholic cocktail to serve at your parties, as well as a mocktail for guests who prefer not to imbibe. “To serve the people who are not drinking a mocktail that looks as inviting, as delicious as something alcoholic is really special to them. It’s better than just a warm glass of diet Coke,” says Ryan Jennings, co-author with David Steele of Cooking With Booze and Entertaining With Booze (Whitecap). To do this, use sparkling water and juices to give mocktails

Forget about fireworks; the only noise I want to hear on New Year’s Eve is the sound of corks popping. Of course that means a bottle of bubbly or two, and when it comes to sparkling wines you can’t beat those from France’s Champagne region. The most popular are labeled non-vintage (those made from a blend of grapes from various harvests) and vintage (those produced from juice squeezed out of a single year). The 2002 Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin ($88.95) is a great choice if you haven’t had vintage champagne before. Complex, yet accessible, its swirling blend of citrus, apple and light almond is the quintessential New Year’s toaster. PRICES REFLECT RANGE ACROSS

Change up chicken pot pie It’s chicken pot pie, only smaller, easier, faster and more party-friendly. To keep it simple, the recipe uses premade pastry shells made from phyllo dough. And because they are precooked, all you need to do is fill and heat them. As for that filling, because the cups are small, the filling needs to be simple. So stick with carrots, peas and chicken. For the creamy base, opt for cream cheese (use low-fat if you prefer) thinned with just a bit of egg white. The result is deliciously creamy and can be done ahead of time. Make the filling up to a day in advance and refrigerate. The cups can be filled a few hours before the party, then quickly popped in and out of the oven as needed (bake them a dozen or so at a time so you always have a fresh batch coming).

• 3 pkgs (each pkg contains 15 cups) frozen phyllo cups • 1 pkg (250 g/8 oz) cream cheese, softened • 2 egg whites • 2 ml (1/2 tsp) dried thyme • 0.5 ml (1/8 tsp) paprika • 2 ml (1/2 tsp) salt • 1 ml (1/4 tsp) ground black pepper • 175 ml (3/4 cup) petite peas • 1 carrot, finely grated • 500 ml (2 cups) finely chopped cooked chicken • 50 ml (1/4 cup) grated Parmesan cheese

There’s a glass that seems to be more than half full right now — flutes of Champagne to be precise. After seeing sales tumble as the recession hit, Champagne shipments were up nearly 22 per cent comparing the first six months of this year to the same period in 2010, with a total of 7.5 million bottles shipped to the U.S. as of June, according to the Washington-based Champagne Bureau. From July 2010 to June 2011, 18.3 million bottles were shipped, about a 20 per cent increase over the July 2009-June 2010 period. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

This recipe makes 45 appetizers

If you like, these miniature pot pies can be topped with a layer of puff pastry. To prepare the tops, thaw a sheet of prepared frozen puff pastry according to package directions. Use a 2.5-cm (1-inch) round cookie cutter to cut circles, then bake them on a baking sheet in a 180 C (350 F) oven for 15 min-

utes. Set one baked round over each fully baked pot pie just before serving.

Preparation:

1

Heat oven to 180 C (350 F). Arrange phyllo cups over 1 rimmed baking sheet (or several baking sheets if you want to bake them in batches).

2

In a medium bowl, whisk together cream cheese, egg whites, thyme, paprika, salt and pepper. Add peas, carrot and chicken, mixing well. Spoon about 5 ml (1 tsp) of the filling into each cup, then sprinkle with Parmesan. Bake for 15 minutes. Serve. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Danes no match for onslaught of Canadian scoring

Mark Stone had two goals and an assist for Canada in a 10-2 win over Denmark at the world junior hockey championship Thursday. Scott Harrington contributed a goal and three assists and fellow defenceman Brandon Gormley scored a pair of goals for the host country. Quinton Howden, Ryan Strome and Freddie Hamilton, Brendan Gallagher and Brett Connolly each had a goal in front of 16,275 at Edmonton’s Rexall Place. Canada scored seven straight goals before Nicolai Meyer and Emil Kristensen replied for Denmark in the third period.

the game it would have been real “sucky” for the Leafs to head to Winnipeg having lost two in a row. But that’s just what they’ll be doing after a 4-3 over-

time loss Thursday to the Carolina Hurricanes, despite goals by Joffrey Lupul, Nazem Kadri and Nikolai Kulemin. The Leafs made it through 60 minutes of hockey without giving up a power-play goal, but a penalty by Tim Connolly in overtime was a disaster. Eric Staal one-timed a pass with 1:51 to go in the extra frame for the win. After two periods of

dreadful hockey that led to a 1-1 stalemate, the third period burst open. The Leafs showed some spunk first, with Kulemin finishing off a play started by Cody Franson — who didn’t get an assist — with a long pass. Mikhail Grabovski led the play up ice, and Darry Boyce got his first assist since being recalled from the Marlies. The Leafs went up 3-1 when Joffrey Lupul tipped

in a Phil Kessel shot at 9:08. Both players are on four-game scoring streaks. Forty seconds after Lupul scored, Eric Staal got around Keith Aulie for a breakaway goal. And shortly after that Zac Dalpe dug a puck out from under Reimer to tie the game with his first goal of the season. The hard work the Leafs put in to get the lead had been squandered. Heil honoured as top female athlete There are athletes whose careers fade away, and then there are those like Jennifer Heil who leave at the top. Canada’s most successful female freestyle skier ended her career earlier this year with an unexpected sweep of the moguls and dual moguls gold medals at the

world championships. That performance earned Heil the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award as The Canadian Press female athlete of 2011. “I knew it was the last time I’d stand on a podium and hear the Canadian anthem,” Heil said of her dou-

ble victory at Deer Valley, Utah. “It was an incredible moment that just kind of wrapped up my whole career in this one last great final moment.” The 2006 Olympic gold medallist garnered 115 points to win the award in balloting among sports edi-

tors and broadcasters. Long-track speedskater Christine Nesbitt was second with 100 points, ahead of soccer star Christine Sinclair (84), short-track speedskater Marianne St-Gelais (39) and world champion boxer Mary Spencer (31). THE CANADIAN PRESS

Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson got his contract extension Christmas morning and much of the hockey chatterazzi began hopping around the blogosphere and beating their chests like great apes displaying their displeasure. That’s wasted energy, as far as I’m concerned. People can focus all they want on Wilson’s less-thanadmirable record since he arrived in Toronto, but that is a very narrow, short-term view — and certainly not one shared by Leafs management. The reality is that when Wilson took the Leafs’ reins in 2008, he was dealing with a roster in transition and one that would experience near-complete turnover. The combined DNA of Scotty Bowman, Pat Burns and MacGyver couldn’t create a coach who could help Toronto escape with a playoff berth in any of the three seasons Wilson has had in Toronto before this current campaign. Wilson isn’t getting by because of his friendship with general manager Brian Burke. Once Wilson got decent-to-above-average goaltending last year, the Leafs were competitive more often than not. In the eight seasons before

he was named Leafs coach, only once did one of his teams finish lower than second in its division. When he had an above-average young American squad at the 2010 Olympics, he nearly guided them to a huge upset win against Canada in the gold-medal game. More importantly, has Phil Kessel not improved since the much-ballyhooed trade with the Bruins? He has. Does Dion Phaneuf not look like a more competent, capable, first-pair defenceman under his time with Wilson than he did during his last days as a member of the Calgary Flames? He does. Is Toronto’s power play one of the league’s best? It is. All of that has happened under Wilson’s watch. If you’re going to pillory him for the record and the rotten penalty kill, at least be fair enough to him in terms of the positives. And don’t tell me the team could have waited until the end of the season before giving him a new contract. We all know my fellow members of the media world would have increasingly speculated on Wilson’s future as the season went on. Now the team can focus on its onice duties without fear of off-ice distraction. If Wilson doesn’t deliver in the next year or two, he’ll be gone. But he hasn’t been anywhere close to a failure with the Leafs. Look at the big picture and not myopic media messages, and that’s easy to see.

WEEKEND, DECEMBER 30-JANUARY 2, 2012

Lindros set for long-awaited return to Flyers A decade after leaving Philadelphia on bad terms, former star will don jersey for alumni game For 11 years, the final image of Eric Lindros in a Philadelphia Flyers uniform has been him curled in a fetal position, knocked cold after a brutal shoulder-to-jaw check on the open ice from New Jersey’s Scott Stevens. Two teammates escort-

ed Lindros off the ice, then gingerly handed off his limp body to the training staff. The “Lindros 88” jersey faded into the darkness of the tunnel leading toward the locker room. “I know what the story is going to be now,” ESPN sideline announcer Al Mor-

ganti somberly told the viewing audience moments after the hit. “It will be whether or not he can ever play again.” Lindros did return to the NHL, but not until the end of an ugly 15-month saga over irreconcilable differences with former

general manager Bobby Clarke that destroyed his relationship with the franchise and culminated with a trade to the New York Rangers. Lindros, one of the most gifted players of the 1990s and perhaps the Flyers’ greatest offensive player, never got to give

his final goodbye to the orange-and-black faithful. With all eyes in the NHL on Philadelphia this week for the showcase Winter Classic, Lindros and the Flyers have seemingly patched their dysfunctional relationship and hope to put the past to rest when

Lindros takes the ice in front of a sold-out crowd of 44,000 fans in Saturday’s alumni game. He’ll play for the Flyers organization for the first time since the first period in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final May 26, 2000.
