Mosque vandalized for second time this week Windows smashed, ‘terrorists’ and ‘vive David’ spray-painted all over Gatineau place of worship on Thursday Man caught on surveillance video breaking mosque’s windows, damaging cars in parking lot Monday morning JOE LOFARO/METRO

In the second attack on the Outaouais Islamic Centre this week, a vandal spray-painted hateful graffiti targeting Muslims and Arabs all over the Gatineau mosque at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning. Gatineau police are considering the graffiti a hate crime, said spokesperson Pierre Lanthier. The graffiti was discovered at about 4:30 a.m. by an officer who was patrolling the area around the mosque because of vandalism there earlier in the week. The mosque’s surveillance camera found the graffiti occurred about two hours earlier. One of the mosque’s members was on his way inside to pray Thursday afternoon when he saw the words “f---ing Arab” spraypainted on the front doors. Even though it bothered him and made him feel unsafe, he said Muslims need to react peacefully. “I can’t let the person who tries to make us feel fear succeed,” said Anass, who only gave his first name. “I have to stay praying at the mosque.” The second attack prompted the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations to renew

calls for officials to condemn the vandalism and for police to investigate it as a hate crime. “It’s extremely hurtful,” said executive director Ihsaan Gardee. “I don’t think that it’s something that is a common sentiment that’s held by the majority of Canadians.” A mosque spokesperson was not available on Thursday. After Monday’s vandalism, secretary of the mosque Amadou Thaim said the broken windows were simple vandalism, not motivated by hate. “We are very established in this community and in general we have a very good relationship with our community, and so we don’t think this is a hate crime,” he said. This is the third time in the last month and the fourth time in the last four months the mosque has been targeted by vandals. WITH FILES FROM JESSICA SMITH

@METRONEWS.CA
The 36-year-old father of two who was found with an explosive device in the trunk of his car last January was going to be paid to blow up a Quebec home, Crown prosecutor Robert Wadden told the court Thursday. Chad Baillargeon was sentenced to four years in
prison yesterday after he pleaded guilty to numerous charges, including possessing an explosive with intent to endanger life or to cause serious property damage, after police found a bomb in his car during a traffic stop on Jan. 4, 2011, on Third Avenue. He asked the officers to go into his trunk to get his identification from a bag, where they found a green
toolbox, an alarm clock with wires sticking out of it, an electronic detonator and a plastic bag containing two nine-volt batteries. When police questioned Baillargeon about the bomb components, he responded, “It is rocket propellant, and you know that it’s not hooked up, so it is what is it is. It would take care of 3,000-square feet,” according to the
statement of facts. The device contained ammonium nitrate — a component for explosives — but was missing either gasoline or diesel, which would have been essential for detonation. At the time, Baillargeon was under a weapons prohibition for a previous conviction. He will be prohibited from possessing weapons for the rest of his life.

Starting this semester, about 300,000 Ontario college and university students can apply for a 30 per cent rebate on their tuition, MPPs told students across the province yesterday. In Ottawa, MPP Yasir Naqvi held a press event at Carleton University. He said the price of keeping the Liberal campaign promise will be steep but worth it.
“The cost to the treasury, especially in these tough economic times, is about $430 million a year,” he said, “but we are committed in ensuring that education remains affordable and accessible.” The rebate doesn’t apply to part-time students and those who graduated from high school over four years ago — and opposition parties and the Canadian Federation of Students say the Liberals should reduce tuition fees for everyone.
Premier Dalton McGuinty held a similar event at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he also spoke about how the province will deal with the $16-billion deficit. “We’re all going to have a role to play if we’re going to be as effective as we need to be in terms of strengthening this economy and ensuring that we’re getting ever more value for the public dollars that are being invested,” McGuinty said. First nation seeks aid
Ottawa says Attawapiskat bills will be paid as soon as band co-operates FRANK GUNN/THE CANADIAN PRESS
First Nations in the James Bay region of Northern Ontario say their housing crisis is deepening despite the federal government’s recent response to Attawapiskat. In a statement issued Thursday, the troubled Attawapiskat First Nation said it won’t be able to make its January payroll unless the federal government shows more flexibility. Many families are still living in tents and substandard shelters there. And now essential services, such as education, are at risk because the $1.5 million earmarked for them has been placed in the hands of a government-appointed third party, according to a statement from the regional Mushkegowuk Council. are crying out for emergency help as well. “With temperatures now in the -30s and 40s, the chiefs are now calling on the federal and provincial governments to take immediate action on the housing crisis in Fort Albany and Kashechewan as well,” the
statement said. The federal government contests almost every point in the council’s statement. Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan said the third-party manager appointed by Ottawa to run Attawapiskat’s finances will make sure all essential
services are running smoothly and the bills are paid — as soon as the band starts co-operating with him and giving him the information he needs. “As was addressed in a letter on January 4, 2012 to Chief (Theresa) Spence, the third-party manager is ready to issue payroll cheques for essential services, such as teachers, and will do so as soon as he is provided with the necessary information from the chief and council,” Duncan said in an emailed statement. He said families no longer need to live in tents because the local healing lodge has been renovated. It now has running water, bathrooms and heat, and is ready to accept families who feel they need better shelter. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Canadians appear to be on a collision course with harsh reality when it comes to their increasingly unrealistic expectations for retiring early and comfortably. With the underfunding in pension plans and rising household debt, a new TD Bank survey suggests Canadians haven’t adjusted their retirement notions. The survey shows six in 10 Canadians have less than $100,000 in household assets, not counting any home equity, while 16 per cent have no assets at all. The survey also found that 44 per cent of respondents believe they will have debt when they retire, and 13 per cent said their debt will be significant. “For some Canadians, it’s not going to be about choice, they will have to

Calligraphy contest honours Japan’s tsunami victims DISASTER. Around the
world, people ring bells or shoot fireworks to welcome the new year, but in Japan they celebrate by showing off their brushwork. Thousands of contestants took part in Japan’s 48th annual New
Year Calligraphy Contest. About 3,000 filled the Nippon Budokan indoor arena for the event. Calligraphers this year were encouraged to write banners of well wishes for those affected by last year’s devastating earth-
quake and tsunami. “My banner reads ‘Strong will’ — for those hit by the disaster. I also wish an early spring will arrive there,” said Kuramochi Jun, a 12-yearold student. METRO WORLD NEWS

HANDOUT
Synopsis
2
Award season is upon us. Soon Hollywood will hand out more gold than Fort Knox on free doubloon day. This week the Reel Guys have a look at the first major awards, the Golden Globes.
scene Scene in brief
George Clooney’s turn as a father in crisis in The Descendants looks like a solid contender for the best actor in a dramatic film.
Reel Guys
RICHARD CROUSE & MARK BRESLIN
Going for the gold Breslin and Crouse make their picks for the Golden Globes Richard: Mark, I enjoyed bits and pieces of a lot of movies in 2011 so choosing winners in the Golden Globe Best Movie categories is giving me a bit of a headache. In the drama category I’ll have to go with Moneyball as the film that hit it out of the park. As for comedy or musical it’s a toss up between The Artist, which was the best time I had at the movies overall this year, and Bridesmaids, which made me laugh more than any movie this year. You? Mark: Yes, Richard, Moneyball was a fine film. But I can’t believe it will take away any top prizes be-
cause it just lacked any real emotional content — and the ending, while true to life, was a bit of a dud. I think it’s George Clooney’s year, and that The Descendents is the film to beat in the drama category. As for comedy, Bridesmaids is the funniest movie of the year, although The Artist is a more audacious achievement. I notice its director is nominated in that category, and I hope he wins. He made me feel like I was in 1928! RC: I think you’re right about Clooney. He brings with him the kind of star power the Globes crave for their broadcast. The Artist,
not so much. With that in mind it seems likely Meryl Streep will take the Globe for best dramatic actress for The Iron Lady. Her mix of star power and chops almost guarantees a win. As for Comedy or Drama, I’d like to see Kristen Wiig take it for Bridesmaids. Of all the nominees it is the only fullon comedic performance. MB: You’re right about La Streep. Frankly, she won it the day the trailer aired. And with Michelle Williams shunted into the comedy category, there’s little competition for her. And although it’s a real stretch to call Williams’ Monroe homage ‘comedy’,
Is it Clooney’s year? her only competition will be Charlize Theron’s dress. Kristin Wiig is a comedic genius — the best thing since Carol Burnett — but I think her bid will be scuttled by the movie’s poop jokes. Unfair, perhaps, but pure comedy scares votes away — it just doesn’t seem like acting.
Actress-turned-director Sarah Polley is adapting Margaret Atwood’s award-winning novel Alias Grace for the big screen. The project once again pairs the Toronto filmmaker with an acclaimed Canadian writer — Polley's celebrated directorial debut Away From Her was based on Alice Munro’s short story The Bear Came Over the Mountain. THE CANADIAN PRESS
RC: One movie I think is a lock is the hands-down favourite for Best Foreign Film, A Separation. I’ll be shocked if this doesn’t win. MB: Haven’t seen it, but the buzz has been deafening. As long as Cars 2 doesn’t win for Best Animated Picture, I'll be a happy man.
Hugh Jackman plans his Broadway return as Harry Houdini in a musical by Aaron Sorkin.

addict, acted with intensity by Michael Fassbender. The well-heeled cruelty and big-city anomie feel borrowed from Bret Easton Ellis, but the film is worse than derivative: it’s gruelling, high-toned and emotionally contrived. ADAM NAYMAN
Sleeping Beauty Genre: Drama Director: Julia Leigh Stars: Emily Browning, Rachael Blake, Ewen Leslie 8
Sleeping Beauty wants desperately to be taken seriously but is, instead, simply a collection of ideas
searching for a purpose. Sucker Punch’s Emily Browning is Lucy, a lost young woman who allows herself to be drugged into unconsciousness for the sexual pleasure of older men. Like the character, the movie is searching for meaning. RICHARD CROUSE

Russell Brand just can’t tell a lie
Katy Perry told she ‘wasn’t that funny’ by husband, according to source ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES
THE WORD DOROTHY ROBINSON SCENE@METRONEWS.CA
Katy Perry was reportedly blindsided by Russell Brand’s divorce filing, but according to sources close to the singer there was plenty of evidence he was losing interest, according to Us Weekly. “There were so many times when he wasn’t there,” a source says, offering the last night of
Katy Perry
Perry’s tour in November as an example: “He was totally uninterested and seemed annoyed he was
there. I don’t think he sat through one song.” And then there was Brand’s response to her
Saturday Night Live hosting stint in December. Perry reportedly begged Brand to appear in a skit on the episode, but he declined and stayed in L.A. instead. And after it aired? “He told her that she wasn’t that funny,” the source says. “That really hurt.” But, um, he was right? It’s hard to sit through a Katy Perry concert and she was Nancy Kerriganesque terrible on SNL. Now, if only she would hit him with his own medicine and tell him to buy a bigger pair of pants.
Demi ‘not worthy of being loved’? Demi Moore admits that her split from Ashton Kutcher has left her shaken and insecure. “What scares me is that I’m going to ultimately find out at the end of my life that I’m really not lovable, that I’m not worthy of being loved,” she tells Harper’s Bazaar in a candid interview, adding that she fears finding out “that Demi Moore
there’s something fundamentally wrong with me and that I wasn’t wanted here in the first place.” But Moore is moving forward, thanks to some profound advice. “Somebody wrote something to me that said, ‘Don’t let your wounds make you become someone you’re not.’ That’s really powerful. And not taking life too seriously,” she says. Forget acting, can Demi write a selfhelp book? She is the new Oprah! METRO

Where does the time go? My first column of the New Year has traditionally been dedicated to my boozy predictions for the next 12 months, and here they are. In the wine world old will be new again. Italy began a comeback late last year and its European neighbours in France and Spain are destined to share in the resurgence of consumer love for classically designed wines. New World grape crushers from Canada (especially VQA vino from Ontario and B.C. and those earning the Tidal Bay appellation in Nova Scotia) will broaden their fan base and Chilean winemakers will get the recognition they deserve. Though premium vodka will rule the spirit world, I predict liqueurs will be the hard liquor breakout star with seemingly simple mixtures like the smooth and mouth-massaging combo of whiskey and honey that is Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey ($28.95 to $29.99). PETER ROCKWELL IS THE EVERYMAN’S WINE WRITER, WORKING IN THE LIQUOR INDUSTRY FOR MORE THAN 25 YEARS AND TRAVELLING THE GLOBE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO FILL HIS GLASS AND PUT INTO WORDS.
Cooking with garlic Garlic is a healthy ingredient to use in cooking and it also plays a large part in flavouring this dish. Look for shrimp in your grocer’s freezer section and keep them in your freezer to pull out for a great and easy dinner.

Four Sens voted as all-stars The Ottawa Senators are assured of having at least four familiar faces on the ice when they host the NHL all-star game this month. Defenceman Erik Karlsson led all vote-getters in fan balloting, and captain Daniel Alfredsson and fellow forwards Milan Michalek and Jason Spezza also were elected for the game on Jan. 29. The NHL said Thursday they will be joined by Toronto defenceman Dion Phaneuf and Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas in this year’s game. The four Senators hold the top four spots on the club’s scoring list, with Spezza leading the way with 40 points — three more than Karlsson. However, Karlsson topped everyone in the league with 939,951 votes, 42,536 more than Alfredsson. Michalek got his spot with a late rush, beating out Toronto’s Phil Kessel by 42,144 votes. Kessel had been in line to be voted in during the election period. “It’s great, obviously, to see all four of us getting in, Alfredsson said. “You look at Jason, Erik, and Milan, too, they’ve had great starts to the season. If we would have had to choose one player, it would have been tough because they’ve all played great to start the season. To be able to all get in when it is in Ottawa, it’s going to be a special occasion for all of us and something we’ll cherish forever, I’m sure. Anderson makes 35 saves, Turris scores his first for Ottawa
Craig Anderson made 35 saves and Kyle Turris scored his first goal in an Ottawa uniform Thursday as the Senators defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1. Daniel Alfredsson scored into an empty net and added two assists, while Jason Spezza and Zach Smith had the other goals for Ottawa (21-15-5). Turris also picked up an assist. Steven Stamkos scored his league-leading 28th of the season for Tampa Bay (17-19-3), which got 20 saves from Dwayne Roloson. The Senators have won

four straight, while the Lightning have lost two games in a row. Anderson kept Ottawa in the game as the desperate Tampa Bay squad seemed to come in waves at times, especially in the second period when the Lightning held a 16-8 shot advantage. Turris made it 2-0 for Ot-
tawa at 17:07 of the second period on a neat deflection off a pass from Alfredsson. Stamkos scored off a scramble at 8:48 of the third to make it 2-1. Stamkos, who has scored eight times during a fivegame goal streak, ruined Anderson’s bid for the Senators’ first shutout of the season. Smith put the game out of reach with a bullet slapshot off another Alfredsson feed at 16:34. The Senators captain then iced the game with an empty-net goal at 19:07. Spezza opened the scoring at 10:36 of the first on
shot that squeaked through Roloson. Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis rang a shot that rattled off the posts but stayed out early in the third as he failed to record a point for the first time in his last eight games, including six in a row since returning from facial and nasal fractures. St. Louis had scored a goal in each of his previous two games when he was hit by a shot in practice on Dec. 8. He missed the next five games, ending his consecutive games streak at 499.
A depleted Canadian team dug into its reserves to beat Finland 4-0 and capture the bronze medal at the world junior hockey championship Thursday. Down three players due to injuries and a suspension, Canada extended the country’s streak of winning a medal in the tournament to 14 consecutive years. Later, Sweden defeated Russia to claim the gold. THE CANADIAN PRESS

NFL playoff outsiders no more
Been there, done that?
Post-season offers unique twist in 2012 with appearances from greenhorns Lions and Texans DANIEL/GETTY IMAGES FILE
Hey, Stranger. Here’s a playoff headscratcher: Accompanying the New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants, are the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans. On Saturday, the Texans kick off the NFL playoffs hosting Cincinnati. It’s merely their first post-season game in a franchise history spanning 10 seasons. At night, the Lions, whose last trip to the playoffs came in 1999 — and whose last win was eight seasons before that — play the Saints in New Orleans. The lack of playoff familiarity doesn’t seem to concern Detroit coach Jim Schwartz. “We haven’t always

played our very best, I don’t think any team ever does,” Schwartz said. “But I think we’ve learned from some of the things that have happened and I think we’re a little bit more battle-tested, a little more seasoned.” It’s Detroit’s second goround with the Saints in five weeks. The Lions fell 31-17 at the Superdome on Dec. 4.
HOUSTON COACH GARY KUBIAK ON
“I’ve been part of a wildcard team that went to the Super Bowl, also been a part of a team that had home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and lost in the first game,” said Schwartz, formerly a Tennessee Titans assistant coach. “So, I think the finality of playoffs ... that’s probably the thing that’s the most different from a regu-
lar-season game.” Born in 2002, the Texans didn’t have a winning record until last season. Their AFC South crown seemed destined when Peyton Manning was sidelined in Indianapolis, but they struggled down the stretch and lost their final three games. Indeed, Houston’s last win was at Cincinnati 20-
19. And it’s the Bengals who visit Reliant Stadium in Houston on Saturday. “It’s just, go play it like any other game,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. “(The players) know that the result — the biggest factor — is you can move on.” On Sunday, Atlanta is at the Giants, followed by Pittsburgh at Denver. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Detroit Lions The Lions have 17 players with playoff experience, but only kicker Jason Hanson got his with the Lions.
Houston Texans It’s Houston’s first postseason trip as a franchise, but 14 Texans have made the playoffs with other clubs.
