No-touch theft now made easy

Late. Loss

It’s only a matter of time before such credit card fraud becomes commonplace: Hacker

Pickpockets no longer need to touch their victims — they can use cheap technology to read credit cards through peoples’ pants. Hacker Kristin Paget proved as much with a demonstration at the Shmoocon hacker conference in Washington last week. With a $50 Vivotech RFID (radio frequency identification) credit card reader, she wirelessly read a volunteer’s credit card standing near her on a stage before using a $300 magnetizing tool to put the data onto a blank card, reports Forbes’ Andy Greenberg. Paget then used a credit cardswiping iPhone attachment and voilà! She stole $15 bucks from her “victim” before paying him back immediately, Greenberg wrote. Fears that hackers will steal personal or banking information

have also sparked an industry of wallets, passport covers and individual credit card holders made of stainless steel to block radio signals from lifting information. While Paget’s demonstration has been possible for years, questions about contactless payments are rising to the surface as RFIDenabled credit cards become ubiquitous. In Canada, Visa’s payWave and MasterCard’s PayPass make it easy for consumers to tap their RFID-enabled cards on a terminal and pay quickly at thousands of merchants across the country. With the right machine, stealing credit card numbers, expiry dates and transaction codes is as simple as waiting for people to walk by on a crowded street, said project scientist and hacker 3ric (pronounced Eric) Johanson. Penguins rally for 5-4 shootout victory

The Maple Leafs appeared to be in complete control after Tyler Bozak and Clarke MacArthur scored 19 seconds apart in the third period to give Toronto a 4-1 lead. But Evgeni Malkin tied it with six seconds left in regulation and then scored the lone shootout goal to lift the Penguins to a 5-4 victory. Pittsburgh put together a furious rally that Malkin finished when James Neal’s slapshot caromed off his shoulder and into the net. See story, page 31.

the head following an “interaction” with police in Richmond Hill on Saturday is any justice, or comfort, to a young family. His death is still under investigation by the SIU. Andrene Graham ended a tumultuous threeyear relationship with Black in July of last year. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Canadian police ‘whitewashing’ crime stats: Report Withholding information makes it more difficult to determine how race influences policing, professor says JIM RANKIN/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE FILE

The majority of Canadian police forces are “whitewashing crime statistics by refusing to provide information about the race of people they come into contact with, says a new report by two Ontario criminologists. Only a minority of police agencies — 20 per cent — have policies restricting them from releasing the data, but nearly 60 per cent suppress it anyway, the report says. The findings are to be published Wednesday in the Canadian Journal of Law and Society. Withholding the information makes police less accountable, said Paul Millar, a Nippissing University criminal justice professor, who conducted the study with Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, a doctoral candidate at

Akwasi Owusu-Bempah

the University of Toronto Centre for Criminology. Getting to the heart of that issue is important given what’s already known about blacks being stopped more often by police and aboriginal people being overrepresented in jails, they say. “There’s no reason we should not use every tool

possible to make police more even-handed in dealings with the public, said Millar. “Our society is becoming more diverse, not less. Millar and Bempah also relied on freedom of information legislation to review information provided by 94 police forces to Statistics Canada through uniform crime reporting surveys. Police representatives have input into what information gets collected, Bempah said. Deputy ministers of justice also have a say. Twenty years ago, when a decision was made not to collect race-based data, there was simply “no appetite among the ministers for doing so, said John Turner, chief of StatsCan’s policing services program. Ponzi scheme proceeds not taxable, court rules

Trump. This

The Tax Court of Canada has ruled that money that was made from a Ponzi, or pyramid scheme, is not taxable since it is not income from a source. A Toronto-area woman, Donna Johnson, unwittingly invested some $10,000 in a scam run by convicted fraudster Andrew Lech of Peterborough and in return made $1.3 million over the span of two years. She subsequently lost the entire amount in bad investments. Lech was sentenced in October 2007 to six years in jail.

Maple Leaf Gardens time capsule mystery solved The mystery of the Maple Leaf Gardens metal box can be laid to rest. The handmade copper receptacle — employed as a time capsule containing various nostalgic items — was discovered as the 81year-old hockey shrine was renovated to house a Loblaw supermarket and sports facilities for Ryerson University. Inside the inner lid was

an unexplained inscription: “M.B. Campbell 124 Lindsay Ave 9/21/31. It turns out the mysterious M.B. was actually Millard Breuls Campbell, a 22-year-old draftsman who was working at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1931. He enjoyed metal work and making little boxes, an interest inherited from a grandfather, which explains how his signed piece ended up

buried in the Gardens, only to be discovered more than 80 years later. Campbell came of age in the Great Depression and his family couldn’t afford to send him to university to study architecture. They were, however, friendly with the family of Constantine Falkland Cary (Conn) Smythe, president and builder of Maple Leaf Gardens. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

When bullying moves online, the damage multiplies — fast Cyber-bullying can haunt both school-age victims and bullies long after graduation ALL PHOTOS: RYAN TAPLIN/METRO

HEATHER BUCHAN

TORONTO@METRONEWS.CA FOR METRO CANADA

The Internet has created a new and oftentimes more emotionally damaging type of bully: The cyberbully — one who can follow you home. “Before everyone was online with multiple computers at home, bullying stopped at three o’clock,” said Monika Wierzbicki of the Canadian non-profit anti-bullying organization Stop a Bully. “There was a sort of buffer. Kids could go home, see their parents, have dinner and to some extent forget about bullying for a while. Now, a person can potentially be bullied non-stop, not just in school.”

Katie Neu, 20, knows this all too well. The Listowel, Ont., resident and founder of Bullying Canada became the victim of intense cyber-bullying when she was a high school student. The relentless hateful messages eventually pushed her to leave school and continue her studies from home.

"Unfortunately, even if the (bully) eventually realizes that what they have done is wrong, undoing the damage can be very difficult."

Consequences According to Media Awareness Network, a Canadian media and digital literacy organization, more kids may be likely to engage in bullying behaviour online because they can’t see or hear the effects of their actions and because many forms of social media lack supervision.

MONIKA WIERZBICKI, STOP A BULLY ORGANIZATION

Anonymity Wierzbicki said the Internet has changed the course of bullying irrevocably. Where traditional schoolyard bullies had to engage in face-to-face contact with their targets, the online world provides bullies with relative anonymity. As a result, bullies feel protected and do and say things they would otherwise not do in person.

In fact, a 2008 University of Toronto study cited on bewebaware.ca found that 75 per cent of the young people who admitted to cyber-bullying someone had never bullied anyone offline or face-toface. After-effects

“I would get bullied at school, then go home, turn on my computer and be victimized there, too,” said Neu, who has continued to do college and university courses online. She said even now she still receives hate mail and has negative comments put on the Internet about her.

and become a completely different person.”

Wierzbicki said that bullying, regardless of the form, can have implications for many years following the incident for both the bully and victim; however, the Internet has compounded the effects because of the immediacy and scope of the medium.

“Pictures and comments can be posted and seen by (potentially) thousands of people in a matter of minutes,” said Wierzbicki, adding that even if a bully repents and removes the offending material, a limitless number of people may have already seen it and downloaded it. And the offending posts may not just haunt a bully’s victims. “Because employers now have the ability to check up on (prospective employees)

by googling them, or checking their Facebook page, any cyber-bullying a person committed has the potential to negatively affect their job prospects,” said Wierzbicki. “The Internet can keep a record of previous negative behaviour that can be accessed by anyone who wants to find it. Discovered months or even years later, it can reflect poorly on a person who may in fact have already made amends, changed their behaviour

As a result of the increase in cyber-bullying incidents, in 2007 Ontario made changes to the province’s Safe Schools Act, introducing a new legislation that made cyber-bullying an offence for which a student can be suspended or expelled from school. On metronews.ca/ bullying — We take a look at anti-bullying legislation across the country. — Missed a day? Check out our full three-part series on bullying. — Have a comment? Let us know online, or tweet us @metrotoronto.

How bullies can make it right Monika Wierzbicki’s top three tips on making amends: The first step is to remove anything posted online that has caused another person pain or embarrassment. Make a personal apology, preferably by phone or email to the victim. Help out with an anti-bullying organization at school or in the community.

What is cyber-bullying? This new form of bullying is when the Internet, cellphones or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person. This can include threats, sexual remarks, pejorative labels, making someone the subject of ridicule on forums or posting false statements as fact aimed at humiliation.

However, I have not forgiven the adults who ignored my pleas for help @redsaidfred: If a bully wants to make amends and the victim is willing, why not? Sounds like a #happyending @laurynzmum: I had a childhood bully apologize to me many years after @onijoseph: it depends if victims consent to bullies contacting them. @unconvmummy: Absolutely but skip the hey bro arm punch! An apology via email or note goes a long way towards closure. @anitaelizar: Not everyone can forgive their bullies. Via Facebook: Tj Freezn: It’s good to first ask qualifying questions, so that they don’t turn into an internet bully too lol. I’m glad you two patched it up! :D Re: “Girl-style bullying vs. boy-style bullying” (Jan. 31). We asked, What’s more hurtful — social alienation or physical bullying? @acidmiasma: Physical bullying is more hurtful. Social aspect usually the hidden motive, boys or girls. @jme_morin: Social & physical bullying are both equally hurtful. A combo of the two is worse. @markyeg: social alienation @kirkschmidt: through either means, the emotional impact is hard to shake, and never fully leaves. #BulliedNerd @WalterRogers1: All methods of bullying are not acceptable @rjperry61: As a principal I found dealing with phys bullying far easier than psychological bullying! Both happen to and by boys and girls @LiannePerry: That’s a really odd question. Who can answer for everyone? We are individuals, all affected differently. #Bullying @inuk37: Bullying is bullying — abuse is abuse

If you’re reading this article on your Android phone, then you’re more likely to have sex on a first date, according to new survey results released Tuesday by Match.com. The survey was done for the international dating site to look at the dating habits of single men and women of various ages across Canada. Between Oct. 13 and Oct. 15, 2011, 1,068 Canadians were surveyed on everything from whether they have dated someone in the workplace to drinking alcohol on a first date — and at the end of the survey, they said whether they use an iPhone, Android or BlackBerry smartphone. It turns out users of Google’s Android phones are apparently wilder than other smartphone users. Sixty-two per cent of Android singles said they have had sex after a first date, compared to 57 per cent of iPhone users and 48 per cent of BlackBerry users. But iPhone users are more likely to wait one day to reach out after a first date, whereas Android and BlackBerry users will wait after two to three days. Kimberly Moffit, Match.com psychotherapist and relationship insider, said the survey shouldn’t be taken

Ottawa sex therapist Sue McGarvie said BlackBerry users tend to fit the corporate, conventional stereotype. “They tend to be a little more traditional in terms of their dating approach.” McGarvie thought the survey results were funny more than anything else.

Dozens die from severe weather Dozens of homeless people have died in an Eastern Europe cold snap, and some analysts blame a Soviet-era legacy of viewing the homeless as those who need to be punished instead of helped. In Ukraine, as many as 30 people have died on its snow-covered streets, in hospitals and in their own homes in the past four days.

It turns out tweeting about “destroying America,” doesn’t amuse U.S. Homeland Security — even when the term “destroy” is British slang for “party hard.” Two U.K. tourists on their way to Los Angeles claim they were stopped from entering the U.S. because of tweets one of them sent prior to their visit. Irish bar manager Leigh Van Bryan, 26, told the Daily Mail he was detained by armed border guards and questioned about a public tweet saying: “3 weeks today, we’re totally in LA p****** people off on Hollywood Blvd and diggin’ Marilyn Monroe up!” — a Family Guy reference. The other tweet in question asked a friend if she

was “free this week for a quick gossip/prep before I go and destroy America.” Homeland Security documents posted by the Daily Mail explaining why Van Bryan was refused entry to the U.S. said: “(Van Bryan) had posted on his (Twitter) account that he was coming to the United States to dig up the grave of Marilyn Monroe…. Consumers shouldn’t think twice about switching insurance companies The rates charged by different insurance companies to insure the same driver, with the same car, for the same coverage, can vary by hundreds and even thousands of dollars. But, if you’re like most consumers, you worry that switching insurance companies means losing your “loyalty discount.” The truth is that switching insurance companies may cause you to lose your loyalty discount (if you had one in the first place), but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll pay more for car insurance or that

you can’t save a bundle in the end. The fact is, some insurance companies may provide a small discount on your premium if you’ve been with them for a long time – but that small discount can quickly become irrelevant if another company has a rate for you that is significantly less than what you’re currently paying. After all, what good is 5% off of an annual rate of $1,500 (a $75 savings) if you could pay $1,100 (a $400 savings) with another company? With so many insurance companies providing car insur-

ance in Ontario, odds are you are not currently insured with the company that offers the best rate for your driving profile. Insurance quoting sites like InsuranceHotline.com can help by providing an independent, unbiased rate comparison from its network of over 30 insurance companies to find you a lower rate available for your profile. Sadly, the misguided fear of repercussions from their current insurer is what keeps many consumers from taking action and shopping around. The truth is that your insur-

ance company has no way of knowing if you are shopping around for a better rate. In fact, even if they did know you were checking out your options, you

cannot be penalized in any way for trying to find a better deal. And even if you don’t find a better rate, at least you’ll know where you stand.

It’s a fact of life — you need auto insurance. But now you can save hundreds (even thousands) by shopping around for it. It’s fast, FREE and easy to use, with absolutely no obligation. After all, who says you have to spend a lot to get a lot? Check online and start saving today!

The father, William Henry Oller Sr., has been charged with the attempted murder of his 50-year-old son. Oller Sr. was visiting his son Thursday when he became incensed by his son’s singing. He left the house, saying something like “I’m going to shut you up,” according to the sheriff’s report. The officers have said they don’t know which song Oller Jr. was

singing, reports the Record. Once Oller Sr. got his gun from his truck, he pointed it at his son who followed him outside. His son went back into the house and locked the door. When he opened it later, his father was still there. “I can’t believe he shot me,” Oller Jr. said while waiting for the paramedics to arrive, said the sheriff’s report. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Union questions paper’s ownership Is Postmedia a Canadian company? Court asked to look into corporate structure to find the answer A Canadian union is going to court in an effort to compel the federal government to rule whether the recently created Postmedia newspaper group meets Canadian ownership standards and is in Canada’s national interest. The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP) will ask the Federal Court in a hearing this spring to order Heritage Minister James Moore to probe the corporate structure of Postmedia, which publishes the National Post and other urban dailies. Led by former National Post CEO Paul Godfrey, a group of unsecured investors anchored by a New

In their defence Paul Godfrey disputes the claim that Postmedia is not in the national interest and says “we qualified (as Canadian owned) under existing Canadian rules.” When Postmedia acquired Canwest, the new company put in place a dual share structure that ensures voting control of Postmedia remains in the hands of Canadian shareholders.

York hedge fund company established Postmedia in mid-2010 by acquiring the assets of bankrupt Canwest Global Communications for $1.1 billion.

CEP, which represents approximately 1,800 employees of the former company’s publishing divisions, wants Moore to exercise powers under the Investment Canada Act that allow him to vet acquisitions of Canadian companies in industries of cultural importance, including newspapers. The union first urged Moore to do so in a letter in February 2011. But, according to CEP’s court filing, Moore decided not to probe Postmedia on the grounds that “Canadian businesses with non-controlling foreign partners are not subject to” provisions of the Investment Canada Act.

His death sentence was publicly announced in the state media last weekend, two weeks after it was con-

which was widely shown on Iranian media. As an international campaign to free Malekpour gains support in the West, the Iranian authorities appear to be countering with a bid to ratchet up public anger against him in Iran. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Tribe sighting comes with risk DIEGO CORTIJO/GETTY IMAGES

Group releases photos of people from isolated Peruvian jungle tribe Authorities in Peru say they are struggling to keep outsiders away from a clan of previously isolated Amazon Indians who began appearing on the banks of a jungle river popular with environmental tourists last year. The behaviour of the small group of MashcoPiro Indians has puzzled scientists, who say it may be related to the encroachment of loggers and of low-flying aircraft from nearby natural-gas and oil exploration in the southeastern region of the country. Clan members have been blamed for two bowand-arrow attacks on people near the riverbank in Madre de Dios state, where officials say the Indians were first seen last May. One badly wounded a

Report finds lack of planning for retirement Most still focused on salary and flexible work arrangements As pensions come under increased pressure from corporate and public sector cost-cutting, Canadians need to place a higher priority on saving for retirement, says a new report from the Bank of Montreal. It says the dwindling number of defined benefit pension plans means more retirees don’t have a guaranteed level of retirement income. “An obvious reason behind this phenomenon is the reluctance of employers to be their employees’ retirement income guarantors: in times of low interest rates, uncertain market returns and increasing longevity, the risk is

WATCHING THE SUPER BOWL, NO QUESTIONS ASKED JUST SAYIN’ ...

Like 40 or 50 million North American males, I’m an expert on the Super Bowl, the U.S. football championship so big that, like a Rocky PAUL SULLIVAN movie, it needs to be METRO described using Roman numerals. As Sunday’s game draws near, more and more people come to me with their questions, such as: “Paul, why don’t you get a life and do something worthwhile on Sunday instead of sitting in front of the TV like a zombie for nine hours watching former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw caper and jibber like the evil clown in IT?” Questions like that. So, to be even more helpful, I’ve compiled a list of MFAQs (most frequently asked questions) to go along with the MVPs and PATs and other acronyms that baffle civilians. “Q: This year’s Q: How old do you have Super Bowl is to be to get invited to be being played in the halftime act at the Super Bowl? A: Older than Indianapolis. dirt. Like Madonna, who Where is will perform this year’s Indianapolis? A: atrocity. Or Elton John, who has made it clear he Nowhere.” would never do it, even if asked. Which he wasn’t. Q: Why are the quarterbacks always called “Tom Brady” and the cornerbacks always called “Prince Amakumara”? A: Tradition. Q: What number is Super Bowl XVLI? A: Why, it’s XVLI, of course. Super Bowl ads are usually more interesting than the game itself. For instance, this year Honda resurrects Ferris Bueller. Q: How come Matthew Broderick doesn’t look a day older than he did 26 years ago, the first time around? A: There’s a rumour going around he’s part of the same lab experiment that produced Wayne Newton and Justin Bieber. Too bad it didn’t work on Madonna. Q: What is “clock management”? A: Each team has a bunch of time-outs they can invoke at any time during the game. The team that’s losing, using an artful combination of time-outs, incomplete passes and fake injuries, can extend the final two minutes of the game for what seems like forever. That’s why it’s called the two-minute warning. Q: How many people watch the Super Bowl. A: Thirty billion.… What? Q: What is tailgating? A: Drinking way too much and throwing up in the parking lot before the game even starts. Q: This year’s Super Bowl is being played in Indianapolis. Where is Indianapolis? A: Nowhere. Q: So who’s going to win on Sunday? A: I am because I get to sit in front of the TV for nine hours … etc. Q: Who will be the MVP? A: Three-to-one on Tom Brady over Prince Amakumara. Tradition is a big factor. Read more of Paul Sullivan’s columns at metronews.ca/justsaying

What makes a hero super? Wanted: Modern-day crime fighters

IN FOCUS RICHARD CROUSE SCENE@METRONEWS.CA

What does it really take to become a superhero? Wikipedia simply defines a superhero as “a type of stock character, dedicated to protecting the public.” What? No mention of capes or crazy gadgets? I guess because there are so many types of superheroes, Wiki decided to keep the definition vague. Take, for instance, the lads in this weekend’s Chronicle. After uncovering a mysterious crater they develop telekinesis, flight and invulnerability all without the aid of butlers named Alfred, secret identities or spandex suits. They’re just ordinary guys with extraordinary powers. Civilian superheroes, if you will. But they’re not the first everyday movie characters to make the leap (sometimes over tall buildings) to become superheroes. The flickers are filled with stories of regular folks who become crusaders — some with extraordinary powers, and some without. In Defendor, Woody Har-

relson plays a man whose rich inner life spills out into his real life. By day he is dead-end-job Arthur, but by night he is Defendor, a masked superhero do-gooder. His task? To clean up the streets of Hamilton, Ont. Speaking in comic book clichés — “Look out termites,” he says, “it’s squishin’ time!”— and with a duct tape “D” on his chest, Defendor and his homemade arsenal of weapons patrols the streets looking for crime to prevent. He’s a bit delusional, but his heart is in the right place. “Who writes your dialogue?” asks a bad guy, “Spiderman?” “No, I do it myself,” he answers innocently, before teaching the guy a lesson he won’t soon forget. Based on a wild indie comic of the same name by Mark Millar, Kick-Ass tells a couple of intertwining stories. First up is Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a fanboy who creates a superhero alter ego called KickAss as a way to boost his self-esteem. In life he says his only superpower is being invisible to girls, but when he dons the suit he becomes… only marginally more super. His exploits, however, grab the attention of Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and

Hit Girl (Chloë Moretz), a slightly psychotic fatherand-daughter team of masked (and in Hit Girl’s case, wigged) avengers who admire Ass’s style and moxie. Defendor and Kick-Ass don’t have superpowers,

but they do have cool costumes and the right attitude. That places them alongside other characters that helped redefine what it takes to be a superhero, the better-known movie heroes Batman and Iron Man.

Woody Harrelson plays Defendor — a delusional but loveable superhero.

The Caribbean is a wonderfully romantic place to get married (As if you couldn’t tell by the photos). And it’s easier than ever; regulations have loosened up in the past few years. Now in many islands you only have to be resident for two or three days before you can get married. Many hotels offer a wedding service in their grounds with ceremonies under an arbour or on the beach. Alternately, you might opt for the privacy of a tropical villa and garden. Our top pick is the Hermitage Bay Antigua, a low key and extremely elegant small

The Caribbean people are uniquely inventive when it comes to music. There is almost a different rhythm for every island. Reggae, merengue, calypso, salsa (in different versions from Cuba and Puerto Rico), compas, zouk and soca. Some islands have more than one, but almost all are lively, fast and full of explosive joy. Saving money on

the slopes Skiers and snowboarders can finally rejoice over the season’s chill, but the long-delayed snowfall won’t make it any easier to traverse the steep cost of winter sports Here are tips on shopping around and timing your next ski or snowboarding trip to get the best deals on equipment, lift tickets and lodging Food bill

Gear Head Preparing for a trip to the snow can be daunting, especially for a novice trying to amass all the equipment, from skis, boots and poles — or a board and boots — to goggles and a jacket. Start by repurposing things you already own: thermals, your heaviest winter jacket, a hat,

gloves and sunglasses. Ski-specific clothing is rarely a necessity, though insulated, waterproof pants substantially boost the fun factor. Borrowing from friends can work well, if you know someone your size. For equipment, bear in mind that even many experts rent their skis, boots and poles if they

don’t get to the snow more than a couple times each season. You can save 20 per cent or more on rentals by reserving equipment in advance from your resort, says Vail Resorts Inc. spokeswoman Kate Lessman. Reserve online at rentskis.com, skibutlers.com or your resort’s website.

Staying in a place with a kitchenette that’s not right on the mountain can cut your lodging costs in half, Justin Blackburn of skiblog.com says, while stashing trail mix, peanuts or candy bars in your backpack each morning can cut your snack bill by twothirds, compared with ski lodge prices. For lunch, Surette likes to tuck a

peanut butter and jelly sandwich into her pocket because it tastes fresh regardless of temperature. “This sandwich costs a fraction of what a sandwich or burger would cost at a resort,” Surette says. And dinner? If you can’t cook at your place, or don’t want to, get off the mountain and head to one of the restaurants in town that locals patronize.

With lift tickets running $60 or more per weekend day for adults, it pays to research discounts. Check out websites including liftopia.com, lifttickets.com and getskitickets.com. You can also peruse Craigslist or inquire with a local ski club to see if someone that lives near you is selling tickets. Season passes are often less expensive, especially if you buy in early. But that's almost always before the snow starts to fall so pencil out the cost of a pass with

only minimum usage to make sure you're getting a deal. It's often more costeffective to buy the threeday or four-day passes that many resorts offer, even if the daily discount is more modest. Check hotels, sporting goods stores (at home and where you ski) and the chamber of commerce where you stay. Some resorts also offer resident discounts for locals, and others lower their rates for members of the military or college students. (Just check the blackout dates.) Kris Surette, publisher

For the best rates and selection, plan several months in advance. Lessman says the best prices are typically available from summer through late October. Escape to the French Riviera Use wintertime to explore and experience the famous Côte d’Azur

You’ll have this little gem all to yourself

PHOTOS: AURÉLIE RESCH

AURÉLIE RESCH

TRAVEL@METRONEWS.CA

Ever wonder why one would need to stay locked four hours in their car, caught in traffic, to drive the 14 kilometre distance between Saint-Tropez and Ste-Maxime? No question, the French Côte d’Azur is a beautiful place to visit, but not enough to endure the aggravation. Here is an alternate solution: Pick any given day between November and March and you will be able

to explore the French Mediterranean coast peacefully. Rent a car in Aix-enProvence and hit the road to the famous port of Saint Tropez. On Highway A8 you will drive passed the beautiful mountain La Sainte Baume where French writer Marcel Pagnol set the plot of most of his novels. After an hour, you will exit on the road D558 which will lace up the hills and down to the sea. You will enjoy a magnificent panoramic view among large oak trees and dry-wall stone villages.

Grimaud and Port-Grimaud, the gate to your escape on Côte d’Azur One of these villages is called Grimaud. A quaint little village with red tile roofs and stone-walled houses. Have lunch there and take a look at the roman church Saint Michel. Admire the 16th century Renaissance style building “La maison des Templiers”, in rue des Templiers and fall in love with the mini aqueduct and paved streets. On the top of the hill you will see the ruins of the castle of Grimaud. Take time to breathe and to enjoy the landscape. You will see a

big variety of trees, vibrant bougainvilleas and oleanders. As you will drive down toward the sea, you will want to stop by, Port-Grimaud, a village built on water. Park your car outside and take the small bridge by the security guard to step inside. Stroll among the colourful houses erected in 1966 on the edge of the sea by famous 20th century architect, François Spoerry. Take one of the many venetian-style bridges that cross the waterways and enjoy having a coffee in this quiet haven. No cars, no motorcycles. Port-Grimaud is accessible only on foot or by boat.

DIRECT NONSTOP FLIGHTS

Ah! How nice it is to reach the adorable village of Saint-Tropez after hardly a five-minute drive! Nested by the sea, the soft coloured walls of the port shine on the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Away from the summer crowds, you will fully enjoy Saint-Tropez, the fashion town, the muse of the French “NouvelleVague” and the “rendezvous” for all the celebrities. Shop in the many fashion boutiques downtown, wander in the small streets and admire the façades, the fountains, and the architecture of the churches. Walk by the citadel and

admire the view on the Mediterranean Sea. Across the gulf is Sainte Maxime. Have a drink on the port and watch the incredible yachts from all around the world. Who knows, at that time of the year, when everything is quiet and slow in Saint-Tropez, and when it is easy to talk with locals, you may become friends with the owner or a crew member, and be invited on board one of these luxurious ships. Tempted by a sugarwhite beach? Hop back in your car and drive for five minutes (when it takes a couple of hours during the summer) and reach one of these famous beaches that make Saint Tropez’s reputation.

Sainte-Maxime, experience the French dolce vitae, the way locals do As the sun is going down in its amber light, you will reach Sainte Maxime to frolic on the empty beach with your children or to sip liquor in a trendy bar by the sea. You will notice there are barely any tourists downtown, however the atmosphere is joyful and colourful. You will find animation around with the Casino and the beach front filled with music bands, spontaneous bike or skate demonstrations, artists, games and live shows. Step into the heart of the city

and walk in the charming little streets; discover unique boutiques and remains of the past. Pay a visit to the Museum of La Tour Carrée and learn about the History of Sainte Maxime through a collection of paintings, arts, clothes and artefact. Some restaurants may be closed during the season, but follow Sainte-Maxime inhabitants and you will discover interesting places where you can taste local cuisine in a warm atmosphere. Off season, people are more relaxed and they will be happy to share with you some stories about the region.

My favourite spot in Canada

DARRIN ROSE: MONTREAL As a stand-up comic, I’ve spent several years crisscrossing Canada, visiting all the big cities and most of the nooks and crannies. My favourite place to return to, by a large margin, is Montreal. It seems civic planning in Montreal is based on the question “You know what would be awesome?”

tween A World Class Art Museum and a Strip Club. Like the great cities of Europe, it is easy to feel cultured and cosmopolitan while speaking no language other than English. In short, it’s a great place to have fun and feel like a well rounded person, even if you’re not.

Cool Orange, Jicama and Mango Slaw • 750- to 1-kg (1 1/2- to 2lb) jicama (size of 2 large grapefruits) • 2 limes • 3 navel oranges • 2 mangoes, peeled, pitted and cut into chunks • 3 to 4 sprigs fresh cilantro, leaves removed • Cayenne pepper (optional)

3

Slice off top and bottom of jicama; carefully peel. Use box grater to grate jicama. In bowl, toss grated jicama with the juice of 1 of the limes. Use paring knife to trim off tops and bottoms of each orange, then cut off remaining skin. One at a time, hold peeled oranges in cupped hand over bowl of jicama to catch juices. Cut each orange section between membranes to make individual sections, adding to jicama as you go. When you have cut all the sections, squeeze leftover membranes to extract as much of the juice as possible. Toss well, then mix in mangoes.

This recipe serves eight.

Arrange on platter. Garnish with whole cilantro leaves and a light dusting of cayenne pepper, if desired. Cut remaining lime into wedges for serving with the slaw. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

for real?

Are you bilingual? MARISA BARATTA

TALENTEGG.CA

How much of another language do you have to speak or write to be considered bilingual?

• Maya Meyouhas, general manager of Sweetspot Quebec, says that “in Quebec, where most people speak at least two languages, I would consider someone bilingual if they can just as easily communicate (speak and write) in one language as they can in the other.â€? • GrĂŠgoire Holtz, French professor at the University of Toronto, believes bilingualism means being as comfortable in one language as in the other, though you may sometimes hesitate or struggle to translate a thought. Bilingualism also demands a level of understanding where the other language’s humour or subtleties are concerned.

What makes you sure that you are or you aren’t?

• Françoise Mougeon, associate principal of academics and research at Glendon College at York University, feels that one needs to reach “maximum efficiencyâ€? and “a thorough command of the languageâ€? in order to succeed in all forms of communication. Glendon students are tested on this very notion; students who apply for a certificate in bilingual excellence must complete a bilingual written test focusing on their weaker language before advancing to an oral interview in which students must speak in both languages. How much bilingualism is “enoughâ€? for a job?

Françoise points out that, depending on the job, you may be able to get by with only a few French words — and perhaps you will only need to speak the language and never write it, or vice versa — but a more thorough knowledge of the lan-

his high school diploma (he studied extended French) and university transcripts, which highlighted his minor in French. When working as a teller at the National Bank of Canada in Ottawa, his language skills were put to the test, but he was asked only one question in French. The bilingual demand varies with the job. Maya adds another place where you can really shine: “If the job posting is in French (or if the company is based in Quebec), send your CV and/or cover letter in French. MARISA BARATTA IS AN EDITOR AND FREELANCE WRITER WHO SPECIAL-

guage is needed to truly express oneself. This is especially true considering that a bilingual job may require you to work mostly in English one day and almost completely in French the next. Christopher Leite, a teaching assistant at the University of Ottawa, occupies a bilingual role that demands just this sort of ability to switch from one language to the other. “Here at the university, my department is a Frenchspeaking one, so again, while I can speak to the administrators in English if I wanted to, they are all Francophone and all of the departmental correspondence is sent in French, he says. While his tutorials are held in English, some of his students speak to him in

French. “This all means that my French has to be a little more nuanced to deal with both the department’s needs and to incorporate the more technical terms in the material I’m teaching. Different jobs demand different levels of bilingualism. Maya notes that “the word ‘bilingual’ has a different meaning for different people — in other provinces, having functional French may be enough to land you a ‘bilingual’ position. Is there a way to prove you’re bilingual to an employer?

“The best way to prove it is during the interview, Maya says. “If bilingualism is important, the employer will communicate with you (test you) in both languages — they’ll know

What should I write on my resumĂŠ? If looking to indicate your bilingualism on your resumĂŠ, Maya advises against use of the word “bilingual,â€? as it’s too vague. It’s best to be honest about your level of comfort and knowledge in both languages. After all, your employer isn’t the only one who will suffer should you be asked to lead a presentation or write a report in a language you don’t know well enough. “Specify instead your functional/good/strong/excellent written and/or verbal communication skills in French and English,â€? she suggests. This shows your employer how well you know both languages and, what’s more, it showcases honesty: and what employer doesn’t love that virtue? Bonne chance!

Leafs preview Evgeni Malkin tied it with six seconds left in regulation and then scored the lone shootout goal to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 5-4 victory over Toronto on Tuesday night. Malkin’s 27th goal capped a furious third-period rally by the Penguins, who trailed by three with 13 minutes to play. The NHL’s leading scorer later flipped a wrist shot past Jonas Gustavsson in the second round of the shootout to extend Pittsburgh’s winning streak to eight games. The Maple Leafs appeared to be in complete control after Tyler Bozak and Clarke MacArthur scored 19 seconds apart in the third period to give Toronto a 4-1 lead. Pittsburgh put together a furious rally that Malkin finished when James Neal’s slap shot caromed off his shoulder and into the net. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Tracy McGrady added 15 points coming off the bench for Atlanta while Marvin Williams, Zaza Pachulia and Jeff Teague each chipped in with 10 points. Raptors shoot 37 per cent from field with seven points while Jose Calderon had six points to go with nine assists. The Raptors, returning from a 3-2 trip, were again without their scoring leader Andrea Bargnani who did not play for the ninth time in the past 11 games because of a strained left calf. Two of the Raptors victories on their trip came with Bargnani in the lineup. It was the second win this season for the Hawks

(16-6) over the Raptors (715). The Hawks won 93-84 at Atlanta on Jan. 16. Atlanta has a six-game winning streak against Toronto, including three in a row at Air Canada Centre. The teams meet twice more this season. The Hawks led 77-60 after three quarters and continued to pull away in the fourth quarter as the teams used liberal substitutions. McGrady scored seven of his points in the fourth quarter.

The Leafs (25-19-6) host the Penguins (2917-4) for the second half of a home-andhome series. Marc-Andre Fleury was tied for third in the league with 26 wins and had a goals-against average of 2.25 through 40 starts. James Neal leads the Penguins with 27 goals, and had 11 points in his last seven games before Tuesday. THE CANADIAN PRESS

‘It’s something I can work on’ Lastest test results show Crosby suffering soft-tissue damage, not fractured neck vertebrae GENE J. PUSKAR/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Sidney Crosby says he has no issue with the Pittsburgh Penguins over his medical treatment and news of a soft-tissue neck injury gives him cause for encouragement. “I think the biggest thing to take from it is that it’s something I can work on. I can come in and get my neck worked on,” the Penguins star told a news conference on Tuesday at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh. “There’s a pretty big possibility that could be causing some of the issues, so I really hope that’s the case and hope with some treatment that it’ll improve and that’s hopefully the end of it.”

Crosby on Tuesday.

Crosby is back skating and says he has felt improvement but is not where he wants to be. “It’s encouraging to be skating,” he said. “I’m just happy at this point with doing that.” Crosby’s comments capped three days of developments — and complica-

tions — surrounding his health. On Saturday, the Penguins confirmed that a specialist had diagnosed their captain with a neck injury in addition to his concussion-related problems. This came amidst reports that Crosby had a fracture to his C1 and C2 vertebrae — with Crosby’s agent Pat Brisson saying it was too soon to draw a conclusion on that. Still, it led to speculation that the Crosby camp was unhappy with the star’s medical care in his return from concussion-related problems, something the Penguins sought to dispel Monday. Fiat 500c (Cabrio)

Fiat 500 Abarth

The 500c (Cabrio) is, depending on your viewpoint, either a convertible or a regular 500 with a giant power-operated roof. In 15 seconds, the two-ply cloth top folds accordion-style, leaving the roof pillars and side glass in place. Sure it’s quirky, but that’s how it was originally done on the 1950s 500. As well as leaving your coiffure in tact, Fiat claims that the fixed side pillar design is far more rigid than open-air convertible designs. The Cabrio features a buzzy 101-horsepower 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine that delivers at least adequate acceleration whether connected to a five-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic.

More performance assistance is on the way with the mid-2012 launch of the Fiat 500 Abarth. The model is named for Karl Abarth, who successfully tuned the original 500 for racing use (Abarth was to Fiat what John Cooper was to Mini). The Abarth arrives with a turbocharged version of the 1.4 that makes 160 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. Also part of the package is a five-speed manual gearbox, sporttuned suspension and exhaust, beefier brakes, special Abarth alloy wheels (in 16-, or optional 17-inch sizes), distinctive nosepiece and rear spoiler plus specific interior/exterior trim.

How could it miss, really? A cute, fun and economical car with Italian heritage at a base sticker price of just $17,000? Well, it hasn’t missed, exactly, but it has been a bumpy ride for Chrysler’s Italy-based offshoot as it attempts to carve out a decent-sized slice of a rather small niche-market pie. Now there’s a new marketing boss and two new models to help reach an aggressive North American target of 50,000 cars a year. But is it enough? And do North American buyers get it? Fifty-plus years ago, the Volkswagen Beetle charmed North Americans with quirky styling and a highly effective ad campaign that, like the rear-engine, air-

cooled car itself, broke all the rules. Since then, lightning has yet to strike twice, although the resurrected Mini Cooper in all its iconic glory has been more than moderately successful. On these shores, the 500’s heritage is far less appreciated, but at least the car delivers on the cute-andcool factor. Of course, a spike in gas prices would really help to light a fire under the 500’s sales chart. For the 2012 model year, two new versions of the Fiat 500 await your consideration — the 500c (convertible) and the performance-minded Abarth. With both versions appealing to a wider audience, it will be easier for Fiat to sell you on the idea of the 500, but keep in mind the small-car pie is still small in North America.

The colour-coordinated dash panel makes the interior feel wider than it really is.

2012 Fiat 500 What you should know about the 2012 Fiat 500: Types: Two-door, frontwheel-drive sub-compact hatchback/convertible. Engines (hp): 1.4-litre

DOHC I4 (101); 1.4-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (160). Transmission: Five-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt., except Abarth). Market position: Sub-compacts currently occupy an

equally tiny percentage of the automotive landscape. The Fiat 500, along with new entries from General Motors and Toyota, indicates this category is definitely on the rise. Mileage: L/100 km (city/hwy) 6.7/5.1 (MT).

ome motoring circumstances will always give you a smile. Going flat out at the Nuburgring in a Porsche 911 GT3? Cruising the strip in a 1966 Mustang convertible? Drifting sideways in a Skyline GT-R? Pulling up to your high-school reunion in an Aston Martin Vanquish? Driving away from the dealership in your first new vehicle? Those experiences are all well and good, but not everybody has access to expensive, or even inexpensive, machinery. And stellar occasions like that don’t come up every day. So if we’re looking to add a bit more happiness to our lives every day, and we should, then maybe we should reconsider some of the smaller motoring moments, which can happen to us each and every day. These moments might be small, but that doesn’t mean they’re insignificant. Vehicular happiness, like general happiness, is always

Who says you need an Aston Martin Vanquish to be happy, like Mr. Bond over here? Be content with what you have and try to enjoy the little things in your driving life.

somewhat fleeting anyways. Here are a few examples of what I’m talking about… • You just backed into a tight parking spot on a street, but unfortunately your rear bumper contacted the other car. You get out of the car like nothing happened, and nonchalantly stroll by, trying not to look like you’re looking too hard at the other guy’s bumper. No obvious marks! Yes! • Your keys fall under the seat. While searching for them you come across a

half-eaten pizza sub — but also the Pantera CD you thought was lost forever, and three toonies! Yes! • You’re doing 115 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. You pass a police cruiser on the side of the road. You stare at the cruiser in your rear view, and apply telekinetic brainpower to lock the cruiser in its stationary position. It’s working! Yes! • You try your usual parking spot first, because it’s usually free. But this time it’s not. So you circle closer

to your actual destination, but with a heavy heart, knowing those spots are the first to go and always fully

booked. But there it is! An open spot right in front of your destination!

• You run a yellow light. You feel guilty/bad. But the two cars behind you also ran the light. You’re bad, but not as bad as them. There are drivers worse than you! Yes! These are but a sampling of potential small moments of happy motoring at your disposal. Embrace them and others. Do not let them slip away forever into the heating and air-conditioning vents. They might be all you’re going to get for a while.

CLK enjoyed for power, luxury, looks SECOND GEAR

Common issues

2003 to 2009 Mercedes CLK

Earlier models in this generation may have suffered from a coolant leak into the transmission, which can cause damage or even failure. Ask the seller of an earlier CLK if they’re aware of this problem, or if any work was ever performed to correct it on their vehicle. Check under the hood, and under the car, for signs of oil leaks, too.

JUSTIN PRITCHARD

DRIVE@METRONEWS.CA

Available in coupe or convertible variants, the Mercedes CLK-Class was available to Canadian shoppers from 2003 to 2009 before being replaced by the automaker’s new CL lineup. Available with a wide range of engine options and laundry list of highend features, the CLK gave its drivers a highly personal and luxurious driving experience.

Verdict Engine Look for six- and eight-cylinder engines with power output ranging from 215 to 382 horsepower in standard models. The CLK’s numerical designation represents engine size, for instance, with the CLK 320 getting a 3.2-litre V-6 engine.

What owners like

What owners dislike

Owners love the CLK’s looks, exclusivity and pride of ownership. Those with the 5.5-litre V-8 all rave about quiet, robust and silky smooth acceleration, and many owners report good gas mileage, too.

Owner-stated complaints tend to be minimal, centreing around limited rearseat space for taller passengers, and sometimes-clumsy transmission shift logic.

The CLK was well-loved for its driving experience, performance and luxury — and it exhibits minimal worrisome problems. This won’t be a cheap car to insure and maintain, though a dealer-certified used model with no signs of trouble should be a reliable and enjoyable cruiser for the long haul.
