Adele, seen arriving at the 54th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday in Los Angeles, won four awards by the midpoint of the show, including song of the year for Rolling in the Deep. The 23-year-old sang publicly for the first time since undergoing vocal microsurgery in November. Afterward, she shrugged and curtsied as the crowd rose to its feet and roared its approval. These days, it scares Jodi Kaplan to let her live-in caregiver, Rose Pablico, out of her sight because of the rampant “nanny poaching” across Canada, especially in the GTA. Since 2010, fewer foreign live-in caregivers have been admitted to Canada, partly due to the declining applications by Canadian families who are now required to pay for all recruitment fees incurred, and partly a result of Ottawa’s slower processing and tighter screening. The shortage of live-in caregivers has been exacerbated since midDecember when the federal government issued 14,000 open work permits to nannies who met the employment hours to apply for permanent residency. The open work permits allow the nannies to work outside of an employer’s home and

Etobicoke’s Royal York Baseball League said they’ve been told it’ll cost the 900-player organization just over $97,000 in playing field permit fees this year. In previous years, there has been no charge. The new hourly rates are $12, $8 and $6 based on the quality of the sports field.

A screen grab from video of baby George Xenarios, a 12-week-old heart-transplant recipient.
Doctors at the Hospital for Sick Children have mended four broken hearts in time for Valentine’s Day. George Xenarios is just 12 weeks old, but is home in Richmond Hill today with his parents, Kostas Xenarios and Helen Chialtas, and sister, Ellie, 3, after a successful heart transplant early last month. The family’s saga began last November, when an otherwise-normal pregnancy became a potential tragedy. At 33 weeks, the 35-yearold mother felt pain in her pelvic area and her weight suddenly ballooned. An ultrasound showed the fetus

Chialtas was given a choice to try to hang on, and thus risk a stillborn baby, or have a caesarean section — still with no guarantee of a healthy child. The couple chose an emergency C-section. George was born Nov. 17, but he wasn’t healthy. He
had cardiomyopathy, a weakness of the heart muscle. He would not be leaving the hospital without a new heart. The next six weeks were a blur. The couple bonded with other parents at Sick Kids, sharing the ups and downs of the conditions of each other’s babies. And then during what started out as another routine day, George’s cardiologist, Dr. Anne Dipchand, brought welcome news that a heart was available. George was discharged seven days after his heart transplant and is thriving, with a good chance to live a long life, Dipchand says.
“During the surgery I knew he was in good hands,” says Chialtas. “That’s when I started thinking about the other family.” In particular, she thought about the grieving mother, and the little time she had to consider donating her dying child’s organs. “She was strong enough that she wanted to give other children life.” After several drafts, Chialtas and Xenarios are almost finished a letter of gratitude to that anonymous family, whose hearts, they know, are still broken. Ford set to revisit sales of TCHC homes CARLOS OSORIO/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Rob Ford
Fresh off the biggest defeat in his mayoralty, Rob Ford appears in the mood for compromise on his controversial push to sell 675 Toronto Community Housing Corp. single-family homes. In a report going to the mayor’s executive commit-
tee Friday, the TCHC is urging council to stick to its Ford-backed plan that projects $222 million in sales revenue to be used against the $750-million repair backlog for multi-unit buildings. Amid criticism from tenants, councillors and the
province, which could halt the sale of all but 31 of the homes, Ford delayed the decision last month while TCHC added caveats including plans for consulting the 2,600 tenants and helping them move to other subsidized units. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Panda loan serves as symbol of better relations with China First pandas loaned to Canada from China since 1985 Deal touted as sign of progress between two countries Er Shun and Ji Li have a lot riding on their hunched, furry, five-year-old shoulders. They’ve never met. They live in separate cities. Yet they’ve been genetically matched as potential lovers. And they are soon to have a 10-year honeymoon in Canada as the two giant pandas selected by China to be loaned as a “friendship gesture. Theirs is a courtship about to unfold at the Toronto and Calgary zoos, starting in the spring of 2013. On Saturday, Prime Min-

ister Stephen Harper declared the pandas were an apt symbol of the ChinaCanada relationship he says has been taken to a
new level. All of this could make it awkward when it comes time to mate during the once-a-year, 48-hour window during which a female bear can become pregnant. In Toronto, the pair will take over what is currently the 2,000-square-foot home of a Siberian tiger. While the move will pose few problems for the pandas, as Toronto’s climate is similar to that of their native Sichuan, the zoo’s attempt to breed the animal for the first time on Canadian soil will be a daunting task. The cost of Vaughan’s new state-of-the art city hall continues to escalate as councillors mull over how to pay for the next stages of the costly project — including an idea that could put taxpayers on the hook to fund it’s completion. The city has already spent more than $122.6million on the first phase of the civic-centre project — the construction of the highly touted city hall building that officially opened last September. The project was $15.6-million over budget, with the final cost yet to be determined due to ongoing “legal issues between the developer and subcontractors. At a budget meeting on Monday, council is expected to approve a $2-million loan to pay for the immediate demolition of the old city hall building and the funding for a new resource

The urgent need for money to pay for the demolition has at least one councillor asking tough questions. “What other things have we committed to that need to be done (for this project) that are now requiring more money, and where is
the plan? said York regional Coun. Deb Schulte, who says councillors are being “forced into a box to approve funding the demolition, which they were initially told was included in phase one of the project. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Firefighters Two men look into stabbed rail-yard fire overnight
Driver arrested after crash
Firefighters are still looking into what caused a blaze at a west-end Toronto rail yard. Crews were called to the rail yard near Dundas Street West and Runnymede Road around 9 p.m. Friday. They say a boxcar carrying several vehicles had caught fire. The flames were quickly put out and no injuries have been reported.
Toronto police are investigating two separate stabbings at opposite ends of the city. Police say a man is expected to survive after he was stabbed Sunday morning in the west end. They say it happened around 5 a.m. near Bloor Street West and Royal York Road. A stabbing in the east end sent a man to hospital about an hour later.
Toronto police say four people fled the scene of a crash that caused serious injuries Sunday morning. Police say the group was aboard a car that struck a pole around 4 a.m. on Dundas Street East near George Street. They say officers later arrested the driver, a 36year-old man. The other three made their way to hospital.

Vaughan began planning for a new city hall in 2003, and initially sent out a request for proposals for a single building. The winning design from Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects included a campus with a library, civic square, underground parking and a park — phases 2 and 3 of the project. Initially, there was never any funding set up by council for the plan beyond the Phase 1 city-hall building.

Canada’s ethnic media seeks money from government NATHAN DENETTE/THE CANADIAN PRESS
Canada’s increasingly influential ethnic-press industry will seek a financial boost from the upper levels of government to better its business and journalistic know-how. Eastleigh neighbourhood of Nairobi, once a ramshackle settlement, now has shiny new buildings ELISABEETH BRAW
TORONTO@METRONEWS.CA METRO WORLD NEWS IN LONDON, U.K.
Envy the residents of Eastleigh, Nairobi: despite the global recession, the investments keep flowing in. They have new shopping malls, and more are under construction. The neighbourhood in Kenya’s capital city is nicknamed Little Mogadishu, and many of the investors are pirates. “Somali pirates are doing huge business hijacking ships, and most of their money is being laundered in Nairobi,” explains Ernesto Savona, professor of criminology at Catholic University in Milan. “Little Mogadishu is beautiful, with new cars and buildings. With a $9-million ransom, you could buy a whole modern building in Nairobi.” Only a few years ago, Eastleigh was a poor settlement. Piracy is booming off the Horn of Africa. In 2010 alone, more than 1,000 seamen were taken hostage. According to the UN, the pirates were paid an average ransom of $4.85 million, and a new study reports that Somali piracy now costs the world $7 billion per year. “I want to take all my family out of Somalia because there is no hope for peace here,” Hassan Farah, a pirate, told a local news-
paper. “I am trying to get enough money from the illegal fishing ships that we hijack to go to Europe.” But, just like the Mafia, Somali pirates need to park their fortunes somewhere. “The most common methods are basic forms of money laundering, such as investing in real estate or front-businesses, sending money to relatives or buying expensive goods in cash,” explains a spokesman for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. Notes Mark Schroeder, Africa director at intelligence firm Stratfor: “They’re not as sophisticated as the Mafia. But they’re entrepreneurial. They know where to put their money. And by Somali standards, this is the most money you could ever hope to make.” Somalia’s GDP per capita is $600. Nairobi is a logical place to invest. Kenya neighbours Somalia and has a stable government, as well as a large number of Somalis, most of whom reside in Eastleigh. Though the majority of these Somalis are law-abiding residents, many — knowingly or not — build businesses with pirate money. “Somalia couldn’t absorb this kind of cash,” notes Schroeder. “Nairobi can.” Nairobi is also a hub for Al Shabab, the al-Qaidaaffiliated terrorist group that controls Somalia.
Nairobi’s Little Mogadishu is a slum no more. Check out the new cars and the shiny new building in the background.
Piracy origins
Pirates boost economy: UN The young pirates support the entire Somali economy. According to the UN, 40 per cent of the ransom goes directly to the Somali economy: bribes and creating jobs. The pirates even invest in
cattle. According to a recent report by Chatham House, a think tank, pirates’ ransoms have even led to wage increases in Somalia. But locals aren’t happy. Too much of the pirates’ money is invested abroad, they say. Most likely, the pirates channel their money as
far as Europe and North America. “The ransoms are a large amount of money,” notes Savona. “This amount goes only partially to bordering countries like Kenya. One can only assume that the rest is laundered and invested internationally.” METRO WORLD NEWS
Until the 1990s, the waters off the Horn of Africa were relatively peaceful. Then Somalis, angered over fishing by foreign vessels, started attacking them. That’s when they realized there were fortunes to be made. Since then, piracy has exploded. In 2007, 26 ships were hijacked; in 2010 the figure was 400, and the problem remains, even though 30 countries now have navy commandos in the area. “The Somali pirates are very young,” notes criminology professor Ernesto Savona. “If they go to prison, they’re quickly replaced by other young pirates. And when they get out of prison, they go back to hijacking ships. But most ... won’t be caught.”

Child survives avalanche
KLAN KOSOVA TV/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Five-year-old girl pulled out of rubble of house flattened by an avalanche in Kosovo Disaster killed her parents, relatives Rescuers have pulled a fiveyear-old girl alive from the rubble of a house flattened by a massive avalanche that killed both her parents and at least seven of her relatives in a remote mountain village in southern Kosovo. Col. Shemsi Syla, a spokesman for the Kosovo Security Force, said Sunday officers discovered the girl when they heard her voice and cellphone. Her home was buried under 10 metres of snow. Rescuers cheered and pumped their fists in the air late Saturday as the girl was pulled out alive. A video aired on Klan Kosova TV showed rescuers covering the girl with blankets before she was rushed to hospital.

Osman Qerreti, an emergency official at the site, told The Associated Press that at least nine members of her family died when the avalanche in the village of Restelica, near Kosovo’s border with Macedonia and Albania, destroyed seven houses, of which only two were inhabited. Amid sub-freezing temperatures Sunday, local villagers bearing fierce snowstorms used shovels to dig deep into the snowcovered rubble — all that remained of the one-storey brick houses. One more person is believed missing. “No bigger tragedy has ever struck this region,” said local district official Behar Ramadani. “Two brothers with their wives

and children have been killed.” The girl, identified as Asmira Reka, was recovering in hospital in the nearby town of Prizren. Doctors said her life was not in danger, but her parents had perished in the avalanche, and she had been buried for more than 10 hours.
The cold snap in Europe, which began late January, has killed hundreds of people — most of them homeless. Heavy snow has been blanketing the Balkans for more than two weeks, with Restelica and roads in the region blocked for several days. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

In a video posted on YouTube, Tommy Jordan reads out a “disrespectful” letter that his daughter posted on Facebook, then shoots her laptop.
Dad defends shooting laptop Man’s public shaming of daughter is triggering discussion about ‘Facebook parenting,’ tough love A lesson in tough love has turned a small-town father in North Carolina into a polarizing figure overnight. More than 19 million people have seen Tommy Jordan chastise his 15-yearold daughter, Hannah — and then shoot her laptop — in a YouTube video titled Facebook Parenting: For the Troubled Teen. Response is divided. Some viewers praise Jordan as a “hero,” while others condemn him as “insane.” In the video, Jordan
reads an expletive-ridden letter that Hannah posted on Facebook. The teen complains about the chores she must do and what she feels is unreasonable treatment by her parents. After responding to each point in Hannah’s note, Jordan gets up and shoots the laptop eight times with a pistol to “put a stop” to her disrespectful behaviour. Jordan said he understands the consequences of airing grievances online,
but feels it was necessary to teach Hannah a lesson. “We’ve always told her what you put online can affect you forever,” he told the Toronto Star. “She’s seen first-hand through this video the worst possible scenario that can happen. One post, made by her dad, will probably follow him the rest of his life — just like those mean things she said on Facebook will stick with the people her words hurt for a long time to come.” TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Greek lawmakers on Monday approved harsh new austerity measures demanded by bailout creditors to save the debt-crippled nation from bankruptcy, after rioters in central Athens torched buildings, looted shops and clashed with riot police. The historic vote paves the way for Greece’s European partners and the International Monetary Fund to release $170 billion US in new rescue loans, without which Greece would default on its mountain of debt next month and likely leave the eurozone — a scenario that would further roil global markets. Lawmakers voted 199-74 in favour of the cutbacks, despite strong dissent among the two main coalition members. A total of 37 lawmakers from the majority Socialists and conservative New Democracy party either voted against the party line, abstained or voted present. Clashes erupted after more than 100,000 protesters marched to the parliament to rally against the
drastic cuts, which will axe one in five civil service jobs and slash the minimum wage by more than a fifth. At least 45 businesses were damaged by fire, including several historic buildings, movie theatres, banks and a cafeteria, in the worst riot damage in Athens in years. Fifty police officers were injured and at least 55 protesters were hospitalized. Sixty-five suspected rioters were arrested and a further 70 detained. Prime Minister Lucas Papademos urged calm, pointing to the country’s dire financial straits. “Vandalism and destruction have no place in a democracy and will not be tolerated,” Papademos told Parliament. “I call on the public to show calm.” Since May 2010, Greece has survived on a $145 billion US bailout from its European partners and the International Monetary Fund. When that proved insufficient, the new rescue package was approved. The deal will be combined with a massive bond swap deal to write off half the coun-

What is the best Valentine’s Day gift? Two broken hearts ham it up at Heartbreak Karaoke 2008.
SINGLETONS SCHMALTZ UP VALENTINE’S URBAN COMPASS
I’ve come to accept that Valentine’s Day is an impossible “holiday” to ignore. Unless you live in Sudan, I suppose. ELIANNA LEV Those red and pink greeting METRO TORONTO cards displays are erected sometime in early January, not so long after Christmas decorations have come down. And like snow, ice and Canada Goose jackets in Toronto, there is no way to avoid it. For those of us who are single (hello!) and particularly cynical about finding love (hi again!) it’s just one of those things, like war and Lindsay Lohan’s fame, whose existence we have to accept. And yet the pressure to find something to keep yourself occupied on this designated, mass-marketed day of forced love is insurmountable. So, last week, I did some research into things to do in Toronto on Valentine’s Day when you’re single. The first thing that came up was an event called Heartbreak Karaoke at Supermarket in Kensington Market. If the name wasn’t enough to sell me on the spot, this line “If you’re alone on the event’s website was ... exaggerate it.” the dealmaker: “We’ve got a karaoke machine, a microEVENT ORGANIZER phone, sad, sad, sad songs, SERAH-MARIE MCMAHON and enough bitter tears and sweet liquor to fill a swimming pool.” Bingo! That’s all I needed. Event organizer Serah-Marie McMahon says she started the event because she was sick of how “cheesy loveydovey” the lead-up to Valentine’s Day was getting. “We take the idea of having to be brokenhearted on Valentine’s Day if you’re alone, and exaggerate it,” she says. “It’s fun and light-hearted and it’s not a bunch of people crying into their whisky.” But, as with Fight Club, there are rules for Heartbreak Karaoke. Rule No. 1: You can only sing songs about love. (McMahon points out this isn’t terribly limiting.) Rule No. 2: If you’re not going to sing a song about love, you have to explain to the audience what the song means to you. “We encourage people to be very confessional,” she says. Hence, the heartbreak. McMahon is positive new love has blossomed at Heartbreak Karaoke among its patrons. It’s a queer-friendly party and there’s a good mix of single men and single women of and for all sexual preferences. “It’s pretty even,” she says. “It’s not just a bunch of sad, single straight girls.” I guess that means I won’t stand out. I’ll probably fit right in.

Sports crazy Sikh warriors demonstrated ancient skills, like the man shown at left riding two horses at once. Villagers displayed their strength by allowing a tractor carrying three adults to drive over them or by pulling a car with their teeth. There were animal events, too, with bulls jumping upended cots and horses dancing to drum beats.

Grammy Awards strike a
sombre note 2 Whitney Houston’s death overshadows big wins by Adele, Kanye West and the Foo Fighters

Adele made her return to the stage and the Foo Fighters piled up the hardware at the 54th Grammy Awards, but the focus was on tributes rather than trophies as a grieving music industry said goodbye to the late Whitney Houston. Off the top of the show, host L.L. Cool J led the first of many tributes to Houston by announcing that the industry had endured a “death in the family,” before leading a prayer to the singer — who died suddenly Saturday night. “Whitney, we will always love you,” he said. That was followed by a retrospective video devoted to the singer. L.L. Cool J finished his monologue on a high-energy note before multiple nominee Bruno Mars led a frenetic performance of his single Runaway Baby. The Foo Fighters had five trophies by the midpoint of the show while Adele and Kanye West had won four apiece. “Long live rock ‘n’ roll!” shouted Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl while producers tried to play him off the stage. ment in an otherwise muted show. The focus on Houston understandably drew attention away from what was supposed to be Adele’s night. Still, the 23-year-old Brit had four awards by the midpoint of the show — including song of the year — and sang for the first time since undergoing vocal microsurgery in No-
vember, delivering a stirring take on Rolling in the Deep. Toronto native Melanie Fiona was a double winner before dedicating the two trophies she won for her Cee Lo Green collaboration Fool For You to Houston with an impassioned speech. Montreal’s Caroline Robert was also a winner, taking best recording package for designing the
deluxe re-release of Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs. The rest of the Canadian contingent didn’t fare so well. Toronto rapper Drake and DJ Deadmau5 — from Niagara Falls, Ont. — were each shut out despite three nominations apiece, while Sum 41 and Toronto composer Ryan Shore also missed out on awards.
Box office
Love has triumphed over action at the weekend box office, with a No. 1 debut for the romantic drama The Vow. The love story starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum took in $41.7 million. Landing a close second with $39.3 million was Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds’ thriller Safe House. Coming in solidly at No. 3 was Dwayne Johnson’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island with $27.6 million. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

What happened to Whitney? ROMINA MCGUINNESS
SCENE@METRONEWS.CA
METRO WORLD NEWS IN LONDON, U.K.
Whitney Houston, the Queen of Soul, was found dead in her bath tub on Saturday afternoon. No ev-
idence of crime or self harm was found at the scene. She was due to attend her mentor Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party that night and the actual ceremony on Sunday. The news of her death comes as a major blow to
the music industry, which is still mourning Amy Winehouse, who died of alcohol abuse at the age of 27 last summer. The 48-year-old Houston was known to have been a cocaine and marijuana user in the past, addictions she sought to end with a number of stints in rehab. We speak to addiction expert Dr. John Sharpe about her death. Addicts often just drop dead. Why?
“We know that she has had a long struggle with drugs, namely cocaine and crack cocaine, and it may have beaten her. Over the years, it can ravage the body and people get worn down, which can have catastrophic consequences. Cocaine can cause stress, which can further lead to heart attacks,
aneurysms or strokes. Although in Whitney’s case, it could have been unrelated.” What do you think could have been the cause of her death?
“I think her body gave in to years of abuse or a recent period of indulgence. She had recently just wrapped up shooting for the movie Sparkle and was in L.A. over the weekend getting ready to attend Clive Davis’ party. These are all relevant factors. People celebrate big accomplishments and I worry that she may have overindulged in old vices at the wrong time. It was just three o’clock in the afternoon. I’d like to believe she got the drugs out of her system and in a moment of total letdown, her body gave out.”
Houston’s daughter taken to hospital GETTY IMAGES
Whitney Houston’s daughter has been released from a Los Angeles hospital after being rushed there the morning after her mother’s death. A source close to the family who did not want to speak given the sensitivity of the matter says Bobbi Kristina Brown was treated and released for stress and anxiety. The 18-year-old was taken by ambulance to the hospital around 10:30 a.m. Sunday from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where her mother was found dead Saturday afternoon. Brown had accompanied her mother to several pre-Grammy events last week.

Whitney Houston — music icon, best-selling artist, winner of six Grammy awards, movie star and admitted drug addict — died Feb. 11 at age 48, a spokesman said. She was found unresponsive at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, hours before she was to attend a Grammy party hosted by music producer Clive Davis. Born in Newark, N.J., into a musical family, Houston was the daughter of Cissy Houston, a gospel singer, and cousin of Dionne Warwick (with Aretha Franklin as her godmother). In the 1980s, she started performing with her mom in New York City nightclubs, where she was spotted by Davis, who produced her debut, Whitney Houston, in 1985. How Will I Know, Saving All My Love, The Greatest Love of All: The songs became the soundtrack to the 1980s, selling millions. Her follow-ups al-

so went No. 1, with the 1992 soundtrack to her film The Bodyguard topping the U.S. charts for months. Its single, I Will Always Love You, was the best-selling single by a female artist ever. Over her lifetime, Houston sold some 55 million records. But in the 1990s, her ca-
reer, and life, went downhill. In 1992, she married Bobby Brown, an R&B singer. They divorced in 1997, but not before years of domestic abuse calls and doing drugs together. Houston began admitting her problems with marijuana and cocaine (not crack; “Crack is
whack,” she said memorably) in television interviews. “The biggest devil is me,” she told TV interviewer Diane Sawyer in 2002, with Brown next to her. “I’m either my best friend or worst enemy.” She is survived by their daughter, 18-year-old Bobbi Kristina Houston Brown.
SAD, SAD WAY TO LEAVE THIS WORLD ALAN CROSS
SCENE@METRONEWS.CA
If you had to pinpoint the moment things began to go wrong for Whitney Houston, it was around the same time everything was going right. In 1992, she had already sold nearly 50 million albums and was about to sell 44 million more with The Bodyguard soundtrack. There was her children’s charity, her support
of Nelson Mandela and a world tour. But she married Bobby Brown, a guy who came with a lot of very heavy baggage. Together, they became tabloid gold. By 2000, her erratic behaviour, increasingly embarrassing live performances and a shocking deterioration in her physical appearance turned her into a punchline for morbid jokes. There were stories alleging cocaine and crack
abuse. There were noshows at important events. Word spread that working with her was impossible. Even non-insiders saw that she was messed up and getting more messed up by the month. As early as 2001, MTV began assembling video for an obit for when the inevitable happened. Lately, though, things seemed to be getting much, much better with even a possible shot at being a judge on X Factor.
It’s too early to call this a junkie’s death, although that might turn out to be the case. Perhaps it was death by misadventure. Or it could be some kind of cardiac failure resulting from years of drug abuse. After all, isn’t this the woman that was once quoted as saying, “Crack is whack”? But whatever the story, it’s a sad, sad way to go for a woman with one of the greatest voices of the last couple of generations.
This is the saddest thing I’ve ever had to write in my life, R I P to one of the greatest humans that I have ever known Whitney Houston Queen Latifah

SCENE@METRONEWS.CA METRO WORLD NEWS IN NEW YORK
Zombies are relatively slow creatures, we get it — they’re technically dead, for starters, which severely limits cognitive abilities. But for some fans of The Walking Dead, the first half of Season 2 moved at a criminally lethargic pace — even for a drama about a small band of humans trying to eke out an existence post-zombie apocalypse. So we sat down with Robert Kirkman, creator of the graphic novel series on which the TV show is based, and executive producer Glen Mazzara, who took on showrunner duties this season, to find out why the survivors have spent so much time hanging out on a farm, and what happens after the devastating events set in motion in the midseason finale. There was so much chaos in the first season, just in introducing the fact that a zombie apocalypse had occurred. Was it always your intention to make the conflict in Season 2 more internal?
Glen Mazzara: It was important to push in and develop our characters. We really wanted to spend time and examine who these people are and to get to know them. The more fully realized these characters are, the more emotionally damaging it is when we lose them. Hopefully that’s the case. These fans love these characters and they get upset, they get pissed off, they get excited, they get afraid for them, and that’s something that’s very special as that does not happen on most TV shows. The show is about the characters. And if we weren’t spending time with them, I don’t know if that would be the case. One of the characters fans love to hate right now is Shane, who has made some shocking choices — particularly when he sparked a mas-

sacre at the farm. At this point, is he redeemable?
GM: Shane is not a villain. He’s a guy who makes total sense to us. He’s a guy who feels he knows best. Now he’s a guy whose baby is being carried by his best friend’s wife — you know, he believes that. Was Shane justified in what he did in the finale? That’s an interesting question. He’s not necessarily out for his own preservation, so he’s an interesting character. Of course he’s polarizing, he’s dynamic. Jon Bernthal does a great job playing him. How quickly is the “Was Shane justified?” question addressed as the series returns?
Robert Kirkman: We hit the ground running from minute one. It’s pretty much Rick and Shane at odds over what Shane did at the barn. GM: Shane and Rick present two very different types of leader for the group, and that’ll tear at the group for the rest of the season. That final scene at the barn, which clearly showed the leadership styles of both men,
was very poignant.
GM: And that’s what we were building to. You know, some people said that the show’s slow, it’s quieter or more character-based. It was designed to build to that payoff. So I think because that payoff was so successful, that first part of the season was successful. The midseason finale ended with a lot of action. Will that pace continue through the rest of the season?
RK: The midseason finale was the beginning of an escalation that brings us all the way to the end of our season. That event and those people being at odds over this thing that Shane has done really kind of drives us to event after event after event. We are going to end with six episodes that are absolutely packed. GM: It’s a roller coaster. What’s interesting is after the events at the barn, it’s impossible to slow down. And sometimes we actually thought, “Should we slow down?” It’s impossible to go back. The show’s off the hook.

Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams — stars of The Vow — tell you how to survive Valentine’s Day NED EHRBAR
SCENE@METRONEWS.CA METRO WORLD NEWS IN HOLLYWOOD
CHANNING TATUM: Are you a hopeless romantic yourself?
I hate that question, because yeah, I would like to say I’m a romantic. I don’t personally think it’s that hard to be that thoughtful. Caring for somebody and showing them that you love them is just another outlet for creativity for me. I like to draw and write little, tiny stories, or even just ‘I love you’ and hide it in her purse or under the toilet seat so when she gets up before you she sees it. It’s whatever. Because I’m a practical joker, it’s fun for me. What advice do you have for a great Valentine’s Day?
Valentine’s Day, I would always say misleading is the best. Say you’re going to dinner, like something really boring — not boring, but normal. Look, I love sitting and having dinner. I probably will be doing that on Valentine’s Day because it’s the day this comes out, and we’ll be working and whatnot. But mislead. That’s what I always say. Mislead. Say we’re doing that, and then go and, I don’t know, go skydiving. Do something that’s a little shocking, that you’ll remember. Don’t do something that you’ve already done. Any memorable Valentine’s Days for you?
I don’t know any
“I like to write ‘I love you’ and hide it in her purse or under the toilet seat. It’s fun for me.” CHANNING TATUM memorable ones as far as great dates because I think I’ve had two really bad days on Valentine’s Day. I had two long-term girlfriends — for almost exactly the same amount of time, it was like three and a half years each — and on Valentine’s Day on both of them we broke up. But in hindsight it was a really honest thing because I think that right around that time you should be figuring out if this is who you want to be with. Is this who you want to raise children with? Is this something that you see going on and getting to the next stage, whatever that next stage is? And I think that when Valentine’s Day comes around, you can’t get away from it. It makes you think of it, and you can’t be dishonest on that day. And I think that in both of those relationships, we had great, great communication and real friendship, and I think it was just one of those, ‘Yeah, let’s try something different,’ you know? And, ‘I love you, but...’ And it was hard because it wasn’t like a bad breakup. It never was like, ‘You cheated on me!’ It was always just like, ‘I think we’re doing different things now.’ And it was sad, it was re-
Rachel McAdams Do you have any Valentine’s Day advice for our readers? “Well, I always like really personal things, doing something no one else would know about you. But a girlfriend of mine, she does this very cute thing where she writes little notes on the toilet paper roll for her boyfriend. Like draws little drawings and pictures and stuff, which I think is really cute. But yeah, just something really personal. I prefer those things. It doesn’t have to be big or lavish, just some thought put into it.”

she was set to perform at the same event. Reportedly, guests even called security on the singer, because she was performing handstands by the hotel pool. • As of now, it looks like the cause of death was from drowning in a bathtub; Houston was probably under some kind of sedation. According to TMZ.com, her stylist, hairdresser, and two bodyguards were among the ones who found Houston in the tub under-
water. She had apparently been in the bathroom for more than an hour and her hairdresser, concerned they wouldn’t have time to get ready for Clive Davis’ preGrammys bash, where she was set to perform, went in to check on her. • Per TMZ.com, they discovered her with her “face ... below the water and her legs were up ... like she had slid down the back of the tub.” The bodyguards pulled
her out and called hotel security. After unsuccessfully performing CPR on her “cold” body, paramedics, who quickly arrived on the scene, pronounced her dead at 3:55 p.m. • Radaronline.com reports no illicit drugs were found in Houston’s hotel room, but police did recover a half dozen pill bottles from the room, including Xanax. • An autopsy was performed on Sunday but no foul play is suspected.

Jazz up classic comfort food Miso is more than just a soup we slurp with sushi Fermented bean paste is a creative addition to this twist on macaroni and cheese Though miso is from China, it is best known for its role in Japanese cooking, where it is used in soups, sauces, marinades, glazes and dressings. Miso can vary widely in colour and flavour intensity based on how long it is aged and what ingredients are added with it.
Preparation:
1
In pot of boiling, salted water, cook pasta for about 8 mins. or until tender but firm. Reserve 50 ml (1/4 cup) of the cooking water, then drain and set aside. Meanwhile, in a large, deep skillet heat oil. Cook mushrooms for about 6 minutes or until well browned.
3
Move skillet off heat. In a small bowl, mix together creme fraiche and miso. Stir in creme fraiche mixture, Parmesan, cheddar, garlic powder and hot sauce into mushrooms.
4
Once cheese has melted, add drained pasta. Stir in enough of the reserved pasta cooking water to moisten, until pasta is coated. Season with salt and pepper if desired. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS/

Shading your energy costs There is a simple solution to cutting your energy
Natural window blinds can save you up to 50 per cent ISTOCK PHOTOS

LIFE@METRONEWS.CA
Boosting your home’s insulation can be a daunting, expensive task: sealing cracks, replacing doors and windows, ripping walls apart to add more fibreglass. If that’s making you cringe, there are simpler solutions. It turns out you can cut expenditures like air conditioning by as much as 50 per cent with a simple, humble, old-school product – the window blind. “Glass lets heat or cold penetrate from the outside to the inside, and vice versa, very easily,” says Steve Kleihege, a product management specialist at Blinds.com. “You need
20
Windows account for 20 per cent of the exterior wall space in many homes – and 20 times more heat flows through them when they are uncovered. This unnecessarily eats up energy, in the form of extra heating or air conditioning. Window blinds can help save you money on energy costs.
something – another barrier – to stop that from happening.” We’re not talking about a simple roll-up piece of vinyl or plastic here. Sophisticated design and natural ingredients make a
huge difference in how much money and energy you can save. “When I think of ecofriendly window products, I like ones that are manufactured out of products naturally grown from the
earth, that don’t contaminate anything in the air, and can be recycled,” Kleihege explains. Bamboo blinds put an attractive, natural barrier between your home and the sun’s heat. But if you
really want to cut your electricity bill, cellular shades are the way to go. “These products are manufactured out of fabric. They have pockets formed in the blind that help trap air, which stops the heat or the cold coming from the outside into your room. For best sav-
ings, your shade would need to be lowered on every window, especially during the day. And in the evening time when the heat isn’t so bad, you can always raise them up.” Window glass is a spectacularly efficient transmitter of heat. The biggest window-blind savings come from exterior products, which block the sunlight before it even reaches your glass. “You have roller shades, which are like screens, and you can also have permanent stationary screens on the outside,” says Kleihege. “That is probably the most energy-efficient shade out there. If the heat never touches the glass, it will never get to your room.” For more information, check out blinds.com.
However, there’s nothing to stop you from checking if you can save hundreds (even thousands) by shopping around for insurance. All without affecting your coverage. We’ve harnessed the search power of the internet to offer you choice. It’s fast, FREE and easy to use, with absolutely no obligation. And that’s the only law we care to abide by.

Turning the dial to determination He pursued his dream relentlessly for more than a decade
Finally Fitzroy Gordon’s hard work is paying off

“I hope my story will give people strength, resolve and inspiration to fight on because without a fight you can never have victory.”
TERESA KRUZE LIFE@METRONEWS.CA
Fitzroy Gordon was nine years old when he bought his first transistor radio in Jamaica. He listened for hours and soon the budding DJ had his own radio station set up in the backyard. He spent all day spinning records and interviewing imaginary guests. After his family moved to Canada, Gordon got into broadcasting and he realized that the black and Caribbean communities were not being served on the radio in Toronto. I thought, “I’m going to

In 2011, the University of Pennsylvania was recognized by PETA for offering a variety of vegan options, including Vegan Daiya cheese pizzas, cranberry scones, Indian dishes and carob-chip banana squares. Last semester, the school’s dining program teamed up with the Penn Vegan Society for a baked goods potluck to educate students on plant-based goodies.
Typically, college is not fondly remembered for culinary experiences, as students shuffle between the cafeteria and campus pizza joint. But there are plenty of students and administrators alike who are pushing for more creative forms of nourishment. Here are three of the best campus culinary ideas taking hold at schools across the United States in 2012.
What started as a fundraiser for Haitian relief is now a thriving weekly tradition at MTU. Each Friday, a different international student plays guest chef at the university cafeteria, sharing a favourite dish with fellow students. With scarce ethnic cuisine available on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Khana Khazana (Hindi for “food treasure) attempts to open the minds of MTU students while filling their bellies along the way. University of California, Riverside’s Culinary Chameleon
While food trucks are deeply ingrained in the culture of urban Northeast campuses, they’re still largely an experiment at West Coast schools. Rather than contracting vendors, this month UC Riverside is attempting to launch a truck owned and operated by the university. The Chameleon promises to adjust its location and menu at the whims of the student body. Boston University’s Fancy Fridays

So close, and yet so far Raptors nearly upset Lakers before Bryant sinks jumper with four seconds left to seal win DAVID COOPER/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
94 92 LAKERS
“I was proud how we dug ourselves out, but not happy with how we dug the hole.”
RAPTORS
Kobe Bryant didn’t need a huge game to dismantle the Toronto Raptors, just one good look with a few seconds left on the clock. The Lakers superstar drained a long fadeaway jumper from the baseline with 4.2 seconds to play Sunday to lift Los Angeles to a 94-92 victory over the Raptors. The Lakers’ victory spoiled an excellent afternoon for Jose Calderon, who scored a career-high 30 points for Toronto (9-20), and came after the Raptors had battled back from an 18-point deficit. “That’s his instinct, especially late in the game, that’s why you really can’t have a close game,” Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan said of the Lakers star who famously dropped 81 points on the Raptors back in 2006. Linas Kleiza added 15 points, Leandro Barbosa finished with 12 and DeRozan doled out a career-high seven assists in what was very nearly the Raptors’ second consecutive big upset, coming two days after Toronto beat the Boston Celtics.
RAPTORS COACH DWANE CASEY
DeMar DeRozan tries to cover Lakers star Kobe Bryant on Sunday.
The game’s final few seconds drew angry boos from the crowd of 19,311 at Air
Canada Centre — just shy of a sellout — after Rasual Butler tried to call a time-
out on Toronto’s possession with 3.6 seconds left. Officials ruled Butler didn’t sig-
nal for the timeout before the allowable five seconds to inbound the ball, giving possession to the Lakers. Raptors coach Dwane Casey, who was also hollering for a timeout from the bench, was livid with the call, but bit his tongue after the game for fear of being fined by the league. “I like my money, what little money I make I like it, so I’m not going to comment on it,” said Casey. “It’s a tough call.” Calderon’s previous career-high of 27 points came almost four years ago to the day — Feb. 11, 2008 versus San Antonio. The Raptors guard, however, shrugged off his performance. “It doesn’t matter, we lost so I don’t care,” Calderon said. “It’s tough, when we had a chance to beat another great team like L.A. But we couldn’t today so we’ve got to grab the positive part, we can compete against everybody, we’ve got to believe we can do it.” THE CANADIAN PRESS
With Raonic out, Canada falls to France DARRYL DYCK/THE CANADIAN PRESS
Canada failed to advance to the Davis Cup quarter-finals Sunday as France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat surprise substitute Frank Dancevic in straight sets. Tsonga, the world’s sixth-ranked player, prevailed 6-4, 6-4, 6-1, over the feisty 178th-ranked Niagara Falls native, who was a late replacement for Canada’s injured top singles player Milos Raonic. The win gave France an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five competition with one match to play.
“Obviously I am extremely disappointed to not be able to play for my team today.” MILOS RAONIC
France will take on the United States in the World Group quarter-finals in April. Canada must play a World Group playoff tie in September to try to retain its spot in the elite 16-team group for 2013. Dancevic, 31, got the call

to play his first match of the weekend after Raonic pulled out due to a knee injury. Canada, ranked 14th in the world, needed a win in
the reverse singles match to keep its victory hopes alive. But the upset was not to be after Dancevic lost the opening four games of the match and then surren-
dered leads twice in the second set. Raonic, the world No. 29 from Thornhill, experienced some pain in his knee after Saturdays doubles match. “After our doubles match (Saturday) I consulted with my team, and a team of doctors regarding some pain in my knee,” Raonic said in a release. “After extensive discussions, the doctors determined it is not in my best interest to play today.” THE CANADIAN PRESS
