Ex-Mountie found guilty of murder Next trial. Gregson faces sexual assault, sexual interference and possession of child pornography charges jessica smith

bing Czapnik in the ambulance bay of the Ottawa Hospital on Dec. 29, 2009. The jury was asked to decide whether or not he possessed the intent necessary for firstdegree murder or, if not, to convict him of manslaughter. Gregson was the only defence witness and told the jury he only meant to steal a gun to kill himself and believed he could outwit and overpower an officer to get one. Gregson said stabbing Czapnik was a reflex to the Ottawa police officer punching him in the face during a struggle that ensued after Gregson, bran-

dishing a replica gun, ordered Czapnik out of his car and to his knees. The Crown argued Gregson intended to kill a cop to create a “spectacle” that would embarrass the RCMP. Both sides agreed Gregson was on a downward spiral. The RCMP had suspended him without pay, and hours before the lethal attack Gregson’s exwife had accused him of raping a young girl. Gregson denies the rape. He is scheduled to stand trial on charges of sexual assault, sexual interference and possession of child pornography in September.

Fleurette Kids Taxi may switch to limo service Fleurette Tharat, pictured here on Feb. 14, 2012, stands next to her Toyota RAV4 that she used to chauffeur kids around town for her taxi service.

A taxi service for kids stymied by a bylaw complaint may get around the rules by becoming a kids limousine service. The catch? Owner Fleurette Tharat will have to change the name of her business.

Tharat, an early-childhood educator, launched Fleurette Kids Taxi in late January and charged parents $20 to $40 to chauffeur their kids. The city started to investigate her in February after a bylaw complaint, which prompted Tharat to suspend her service. On Tuesday, Tharat referred phone calls to her business consultant, Alexander Leslie, who said he met with bylaw Monday to discuss the possibility of running a limousine service instead. Tharat is in the process of obtaining a limousine licence, Leslie said.

Cost of a new name

$5,000

Leslie says changing the name will set Tharat back about $5,000 — the cost of modifying her website, bank accounts, address, payroll systems, business cards and other materials.

He said Tharat meets almost all city bylaw requirements to operate a limo service, such as having power windows, air conditioning and a cellphone for passengers. She can fulfil one remain-

ing requirement by tinting her windows, but the city threw one more hurdle up. “They’ve asked her to take the word ‘taxi’ out of the name, (but) there’s no place in the bylaw (saying) what the company has to be named,” said Leslie. “It just seems a bit unfair to go through all this to realize that, yes, it is safe, effective, and legal and she still has to rename her company.” Leslie said Fleurette is debating the city’s request and in the meantime, the city will inspect her Toyota RAV4 next week.

Ottawa’s first large-scale comic convention and Capt. Jean Luc Picard — a.k.a. Sir Patrick Stewart — will be coming to town in May, organizers announced to a room full of excited sci-fi fans and heavy breathing. Ottawa Comiccon vicepresident David Newman announced the comic-book and pop-culture convention at a press conference at the Mill Street Brew Pub Tuesday, flanked by people dressed as Star Wars characters, including Darth Vader, whose signature breathing was piped into the sound system. Newman said the subcultures of comic conventions — comics, gaming and anime, to name a few — used to have niche audiences, but now it’s all mainstream. “Essentially, the phenomenon of the comic con has taken hold around the world,” he said. “I think that’s why it’s time we bring the comic-con phenomenon to Ottawa.” The convention will feature Stewart and fellow actors John de Lancie (Star Trek’s Q), Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk), Cassandra Peterson (Elvira, Mistress of the Dark) and Jeremy Bulloch (Star Wars’ Boba Fett), as well as anime and

Rae comes clean on Liberal robocalls Robocalls. Interim Liberal leader Bob Rae reveals party’s phone scripts and makes public call for Harper’s Tories to do the same

Liberal interim Leader Bob Rae is urging the Tories to come clean on any robocall tactics used in the last election. Sean Kilpatrick/the canadian press

The Liberal party has given Elections Canada samples of its robocall messages and scripts for live calls to voters during last spring’s election campaign. Interim leader Bob Rae says in a letter to the agency that the party has recordings of all its campaign robocalls and will make them available if needed for the investigation into alleged vote-suppression tactics.

And he’s calling on the Conservatives to be equally transparent. Elections Canada is investigating thousands of complaints about fraudulent robocalls in which someone purporting to be calling on behalf of the agency misdirected voters to non-existent polling locations. The watchdog is also looking into harassing live calls that were purportedly made on behalf of an opposition party but that appeared aimed at alienating that party’s supporters. Opposition parties accuse the Conservatives of masterminding a widespread, votesuppression scheme since discovering that fraudulent robocalls in the hotly contested riding of Guelph had been

However, the Tories have fought back by accusing the Liberals of their own misdeeds, including a robocall in Guelph that attacked the Tory candidate’s position on abortion without saying that the call was being made on behalf of Liberal incumbent Frank Valeriote.

Valeriote has said he’s already come clean about that robocall with Elections Canada investigators. In a letter to election commissioner William Corbett, Rae says election financial returns already filed by the party and its local candidates include all relevant financial information about live and automated phone services used during the campaign. He offers to supply more records if necessary. In a veiled reference to the Tories, Rae adds: “We feel it would be irresponsible and tantamount to obstruction for any political party to be anything less than fully transparent and co-operative with your investigation.” the canadian press

Everyday your body is under attack from pollution, pesticides, chemicals and toxins. They are in the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe. No matter your lifestyle, no one is escaping this constant barrage of toxins.

TESTIMONIAL - Thank you so much! “My fiancée and I had always thought

that we were relatively healthy at 47 years of age and had fairly decent eating habits in that we were conscious of what we put into our bodies - fresh fruit and veggies, as little processed meats, white flour, sugar, salt, etc. but over the last 6 months or so we were beginning to feel sluggish and that our age was finally catching up to us - very rapidly. We searched the internet and narrowed our search to CleanseSMART's 30 day cleanse. We are very happy to report that after only five days both of us felt an amazing change in our bodies - lighter, healthier and more energized! Thank you so very much for your expertise in formulating this cleanse.” - 2008-01-16

First Time Cleanse TESTIMONIAL - Enjoyable Experience

“This was my 'first cleanse', and I can truly say it has been an enjoyable experience. I followed the directions, and made changes in my diet. The first few days, I began to notice some changes in my energy levels and 'waste elimination'. I also could tell the products were working, as my skin had mild breakouts. Towards the end of the program, the breakouts had cleared up, I was more regular in waste elimination, and I lost 7 pounds.” - 2011-10-04

Crime. Quebec will attempt to soften effects of Bill C-10 The debate isn’t over yet for the Conservative government’s criminal-justice legislation — at least not in Quebec. The provincial government announced Tuesday that it would do everything in its power to limit the clout of the legislation that passed a day earlier. Because the provinces are responsible for applying the laws passed in Ottawa, Quebec says it will work to soften Bill C-10 where possible. The provincial minister said he will issue a directive to various players in the jus-

tice system to avoid applying the strictest provisions of the crime bill — particularly when it comes to youth offenders. “It is not a plan to abolish C-10,” Jean-Marc Fournier said at a conference Tuesday. Some provinces, including Quebec, also say Ottawa should be responsible for paying for the new jail spaces that will be required as a result of the legislation. Quebec pegs the costs at $750 million for new prisons, and at up to $80 million a year for application of the new rules. the canadian press

Terri-Lynne McClintic testifies at the Michael Rafferty murder trial in London, Ont., on Tuesday. She said she was high on drugs when Rafferty urged her to kidnap a little girl. tammy hoy/the canadian press

Tearful McClintic: ‘I believed he was going to rape Tori’ Caution: Graphic content. Jury hears eight-year-old was hit ‘maybe three’ times with a hammer in a farmer’s field Terri-Lynne McClintic has told a jury she’s the one who delivered what the Crown alleges were the fatal blows to eight-year-old Victoria Stafford. McClintic testified Tuesday at Michael Rafferty’s first-degree murder trial in London, Ont., and detailed the events surrounding the abduction and death of the little girl. The Grade 3 student went missing outside her Woodstock school on April 8, 2009, and the Crown alleges she died from multiple blows to her head with a hammer the same day. McClintic told the jury she struck Tori with the hammer “maybe three” times in a farmer’s field after a garbage bag was placed over the girl’s head. McClintic, at times wiping tears from her face and taking long pauses, told the court she saw Rafferty attempt to rape the girl before

that, but didn’t “stay there and watch. I can’t really give you play-by-play.” McClintic did note that when she took the girl to use the washroom in the field, after Tori had been alone with Rafferty, she noticed blood in the snow. “I told her I was sorry. She told me just don’t let him do it again,” McClintic said. Rafferty has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, sexual assault causing bodily harm and kidnapping. McClintic pleaded guilty in April, 2010, to first-degree murder and is serving a life sentence. She told the jury Tuesday Rafferty wanted a “young female, because the younger they were, the easier they were to manipulate.” She told the jury she lured Tori into Rafferty’s car with the promise of seeing a

puppy. She said while driving on Highway 401 with Tori in the car Rafferty said: “We can’t just keep her, but we can’t take her back.” McClintic told the jury that when Rafferty said he intended to have sex with the girl she “didn’t want to acknowledge that.” “I remember him telling me to look for a spot. I said ‘A spot for what?’ and he didn’t answer me,” she said. Court also heard that Rafferty began masturbating as he pulled the car off a country road, and that once stopped in the field McClintic walked away because she “knew what was going to happen.” “I believed he was going to rape Tori,” McClintic said. The main and overflow courtrooms were filled to capacity for McClintic’s testimony. the canadian press

That fateful first meeting • Pizza. Terri-Lynne McClintic and Michael Rafferty met at a pizza shop in February 2009, went for a drive and had sex in his car, she testified. • Passion. “He was somebody I cared for,” McClintic said.

• Sex. They had sex on three more occasions, including once at a movie theatre. • Crime. McClintic had several convictions for assaults and was wanted by police for parole violation.

Diet. An eat-less-salt campaign lacked that winning flavour: Study A study couldn’t tell if an eatless-salt campaign changed any eating habits in a test case in eastern Ontario. The federal government and local health centres kicked off a campaign in 2009 to try to persuade people to consume less sodium. using bottled marinades, or adding your own seasoning to chicken. “There were no significant differences documented for participants reporting they reduced the amount of sodium they ate in the past 30 days,” the study says. Local health centres in the Champlain region kicked off a campaign in August 2009 to try to persuade people in the area to consume less sodium. The federal government spent $194,000 to evaluate the results of that campaign. The study looked at two groups of adults between the ages of 35 and 50. The Champlain group was exposed to the sodium campaign and a control group in a different town was not. But when it came to actually reducing sodium, neither group changed their eating habits in a meaningful way. the canadian press

A ferry packed with about 200 people capsized in a river in southern Bangladesh on Tuesday, killing at least 31 people and leaving dozens missing. Police chief Mohammad Shahabuddin Khan said about 35 people were rescued after the ferry sank on the Meghna River after colliding with a cargo boat. Divers recovered 31 bodies, he said. The dead included a young woman found cradling her baby’s lifeless body. “The death toll is likely to rise as more bodies are feared trapped inside,” Khan added. Diver Mohammad Alauddin said there were still bodies inside the ferry, some of them buried under cargo. U.K. media. Former Murdoch exec arrested in phone-hacking scandal

Lawsuit. Public knew risks of smoking: Former Imperial spokesman

Former News International executive Rebekah Brooks and her racehorse trainer husband Charlie were arrested Tuesday in dawn raids that also netted four other suspects in the spreading phone hacking scandal. Police said the six people were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. The charge is an indication that investigators may be focusing on a possible coverup of the scope of phone hacking rather than the illegal hacking itself. It was the most arrests in a single day since “Operation Weeting” — as the police investigation into phone hacking is known — began arresting reporters, senior news executives, police officers and others suspected of criminal acts. Police said the suspects ranged in age from 38 to 49 and that all but one were released on bail Tuesday evening after questioning. The Brookses are believed to be among those released on bail.

A retired tobacco spokesman told a historic civil trial Tuesday that his company was already under fire in the 1960s over the potential health risks of smoking. Michel Descoteaux, who headed Imperial Tobacco’s public-relations department for more than two decades, said there was no point trying to argue against a public and media that wanted to hear one thing: that smoking was bad for you. Descoteaux was testifying at

the start of a landmark class-action suit, the biggest civil trial in Canadian history. It pits Quebec smokers against Canada’s three biggest cigarette companies. Descoteaux said the evidence the company actually had in the 1960s, gathered by company scientists and researchers, was that there was no link between smoking and public health. But he said the general public and news media dismissed such reports back then and demanded that the company come clean. the canadian press

Market Moment • In many of the earlier arrests, suspects had been asked to report to various police stations for questioning, but police seem to have abandoned such lenient tactics as the scope of wrongdoing has emerged. • Deputy Assistant Commissioner Sue Akers testified last month that the practice of making arrests without warning is an attempt to “secure best evidence and prevent suspects conferring or disposing of evidence.”

President Obama warns China against ‘skirting the rules’ Foreign affairs. Barack Obama cautious of China’s stranglehold on global supply of 17 rare earth minerals U.S. President Barack Obama warned China Tuesday that it would not be allowed to gain a competitive advantage in world trade by “skirting the rules.” Making an election-year pitch to American workers, and businesses as well, Obama announced Washington has brought a new trade case against Beijing. The goal is to pressure China, a rising Asian economic power, to end its restrictions on exports of key materials used to manufacture hybrid car batteries, flatscreen televisions and other high tech-goods. “If China would simply let the market work on its own, we’d have no objection,” Obama said during remarks at the White House. “But their policies currently are preventing that from happening. And they go against the very rules that China agreed to follow.”

The U.S., working in conjunction with the European Union and Japan, asked the World Trade Organization Tuesday to facilitate talks with China over its curtailment of exports of what’s known as rare earth minerals. Obama cast the fresh action against China as part of a broader push to level the playing field for U.S. companies. “When it is necessary, I will take action if our workers and our businesses are being subjected to unfair practices,” Obama said. With the U.S economy slowly recovering from recession, Obama has sought to bring a renewed focus on Chinese policies that could hinder U.S. expansion. He used an executive order last month to create a new trade enforcement agency — the Interagency Trade Enforcement Center — to move aggressively against China and other nations. Obama’s posture on China has already surfaced as an election-year issue, with Republican front-runner Mitt Romney criticizing him for refusing so far to cite China for manipulating its currency. the associated press

The union representing mechanics, baggage handlers and other ground crew at Air Canada says the federal government’s decision to impose arbitration on its talks with the airline is eroding labour rights. “This will undermine free collective bargaining and poison labour relations across Canada,” said Dave Ritchie, Canadian general vicepresident of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Citing a need to protect the economy, Labour Minister Lisa Raitt proposed hour worked, outpaced the U.S. for the first time in five years in 2011, advancing 1.1 per cent in the fourth quarter above the corresponding period in 2010, as opposed to the 0.1 per cent gain south of the border. 11:16 AM: you’ve probably already checked out of the office Hello, fellow cat jugglers. Of course, it just feels as if we’re juggling cats. In reality, Paul Sullivan we’re juggling meetings, unmetronews.ca/justsaying reasonable demands, inboxes, texts, tweets and PowerPoints. Did I mention unreasonable demands? And if you drop one, it feels just like an unhappy tomcat landing on your face. Here’s some good news: You’ve already survived the peak cat-juggling moment of the week, which, according to a 2011 British survey of 3,000 employees between 18 and 45 by Michael Page International, is Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. It’s all downhill from that point. From there, it’s just kitten bouncing. You might be surprised that it’s not Monday, the traditional black cat that curls up in the cubicles of wage slaves. The survey reveals that people aren’t really back to work Monday; they’re easing themselves back into the saddle, catching up with colleagues about the weekend and ignoring emails and in-baskets. The trouble is, none of that stuff goes away, and by Tuesday at 10 a.m. the cats start howling. A good time to go for coffee. Or walk the dog. Personally, I think Sunday, bloody Sunday, is the most stressful time of the week, particularly Sunday afternoon, which is when you start thinking about what it’s going to be like on Tuesday morning. There you are, sharing a gelato with your honey on a fine Sunday afternoon, and it occurs to you that you better get that presentation done by Tuesday at 10 a.m., or the boss will feed you to the tigers. For a lot of people, every day is a bad day. Three-quarters of the survey respondents are done by 11:16. Every day. Considering there are still five hours and 45 minutes remaining in the average work day, we have a problem. If the survey is in any way a reflection of reality, three-quarters of us should just put on our coats and go home before Punch in, check out? noon, and leave the afternoon to those people who are If you believe the suractually working. (And treats. Don’t forget 9 a.m. that, if all else fails, cats are easy to bribe with tuna snacks.) If you believe the survey, one in five should not even bother to turn up in the morning, because they’re done by 9 a.m. Never mind hump day or TGIF, these people need extended beach therapy, which consists mainly of unregulated access to drinks with little umbrellas. Plus, when was the last time you saw a cat on the beach?

Rooted and Undun Q & A. Roots drummer Questlove on latest albums, Philly, Jay-Z, Jimmy Fallon and Amy Winehouse The Roots aren’t known for selling records. While the hip-hop band has released 14 albums — mostly to critical acclaim — only two have managed to crack gold status. But even though bandleader Questlove might have enjoyed the money that comes along with multiplatinum records, he wouldn’t trade the group’s rarified position in the music world for it. “Mostly for black artists, we’re really not afforded — unless you’re a jazz artist — you’re really not afforded the luxury of making an art record, or a concept record, or a passion project,” said Questlove, born Ahmir Thompson. “For some strange, odd reason, and I’m not ever going to argue it, The Roots have always (had that luxury).” And The Roots, the house band for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon since 2009, have had support from high places to maintain that luxury. When Jay-Z was president of Def Jam, he signed The Roots to the label and told them to maintain their sound and integrity, even if it meant fewer sales. “(Jay-Z) didn’t want to be known as the bad guy that killed The Roots,” Questlove said. The Roots put out two CDs On Amy Winehouse

“I really miss not having her here to school me on jazz... There’s so much more I could have learned. She’s a teacher.” Questlove

last year with the Betty Wrightassisted Betty Wright: The Movie and Undun, which debuted at No. 17 on the Billboard charts. Both landed on several critics’ best-of-the-year lists. Jay-Z gave you guys some good advice. I told Jay, “Like man, that would be nice to have all my records debut at No. 1 and stuff.” But he’s like, “Yeah, but you’re just looking at that. I got to deal with beef with this cat and that cat. Every year some rapper’s going to take a potshot and I got to take the gloves out the closet and start training.” ... And (Jay-Z) sees me as an artist making my dream come true. Like, he wants to be seen as a true artist, not the richest guy in hip-hop. Meanwhile, I would like 13 zeros in my account. Undun is about the death of fictional drug dealer Redford Stevens, but the story is told

SOME FILL WITH PRIDE.

from beginning to end. How did the concept come about? We wanted to tell his story because we’ve known a billion Redford Stevens in Philadelphia. Philadelphia has been sort of mired and drenched into a lot of random acts of crime, very un-brotherly like in the last decade or so, and we wanted to show the direct result. You recorded an album with Betty Wright at the same time. What was that like? I figured I wanted to dedicate the rest of my existence (to) creating source material so that someone else can have something to sample in 2040 once this becomes a dated record. I’m just trying to create the soulful records that will still be used. And it’s funny because Betty never understood why I wanted to put a drum break at the beginning, she just wanted to sing. I’m like, “No. No. No. Drum break. Trust me on this

one. You’ll thank me 30 years from now when you get your publishing checks.” You were close to Amy Winehouse. What was your relationship like with her? She’s such a jazz snob. I couldn’t stand it, but I was obsessed with it because once we exchanged information, she would always be on her computer sending me MP3s (like), “Listen to this.” ... We spent a lot of time on Skype talking about crazy ideas and she schooled me about Sarah Vaughan. I schooled her about J Dilla. And she was like, “All right, we’re going to start a super group. You, me, Mos (Def) and Raphael Saadiq.” I was like, “OK.” And she assigned homework: “All right, study this record.” ... I really miss not having her here to school me on jazz; I thought I was a music snob, and I thought I had my doctorate in jazz, but no. There’s so much more I could have learn-

ed. She’s a teacher. How has the band grown from being on the Jimmy Fallon show? Being on the Jimmy Fallon show has introduced a word that has never been in our vocabulary. We’ve never, ever rehearsed as a band. We never practiced. Shockers, I know. ...So once we come to Fallon, we’re now confined to a very tight space, and it’s just the eight of us looking at each other, and it’s very awkward. ... It’s like we didn’t know how to play. ... Once we got in a groove, we just practiced a lot. And now we’re better musicians, we’re better songwriters, we’re better engineers, we’re better producers. We’re just more focused on our songwriting than ever. I wish we had this type of discipline and preparation at the beginning of our career. So I feel like now we’re just on our second album. Making the jump from TV to the silver screen Cult shows. From Star Trek to The X-Files to Saturday Night Live: small screen hits can often be big films at the box office IN FOCUS

Richard Crouse scene@metronews.ca

When Jonah Hill’s reboot of 21 Jump Street hits theatres this weekend, it joins a long list of big screen adaptations of small screen hits. Everything from sci-fi shows like The X-Files to comedies like The Addams Family and

even reality and games shows (Jackass and The Gong Show) have made the leap from TV to theatres. Hill describes the new 21 Jump Street as an “R-rated, insane, Bad-Boys-meets-John Hughes-type movie.” I don’t remember the TV show the movie is based on as being that edgy but if William Shatner’s cop show T.J. Hooker can be turned into an adult-friendly flick called T.J. Hookers, I suppose anything is possible. Probably the most spunoff TV franchise is Star Trek. Between the original show and the TV offshoots, 11 films have gone where no film series has gone before. The 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot with Chris Pine as James T. Kirk was a special effects extravaganza but the Wrath of Khan seems to tickle

Trekkies the most. Based on the 1967 episode Space Seed, it’s believed to be the first time a movie was made as a sequel to a specific episode. Ricardo Montalbán took a break from Fantasy Island to take the role, but had one request: he was a gym devotee and wanted costumes that would show off his muscular chest. The original pilot for the hip spy show The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was actually shot with a theatrical release in mind. Although the show would air in black-and-white on NBC, the pilot was shot in colour with some racier scenes added in. The tame version aired on television, while the sexier edit played in theatres as To Trap a Spy. Finally, sketch comedy

shows have also been a fertile breeding ground for movies. Saturday Night Live has spawned a dozen films, giving us characters like Wayne and Garth and the Coneheads. Years before SNL was even on television legendary comedy troupe Monty Python used cinema as a way to court a new worldwide audience for their TV show. And Now for Something Completely Different contains re-filmed skits from the first two seasons of their show, including the classic Nudge, Nudge, and Dead Parrot sketches. The movie is best summed up in the words of SergeantMajor (played by Graham Chapman). “Now, I would just like to point out that this film is displaying a distinct tendency to become silly.”

It was a role in the comedy Step Brothers that gave dramatic actor Adam Scott his big break. “It was a fluke, honestly,” says the actor on landing his role as Will Ferrell’s conceited biological brother in the 2008 comedy. “It was so fun and exciting; no day was ever the same,” he remembers. “That and [Starz comedy series] Party Down took me in a new direction. I never looked back.” Discovering his comedic acting chops was a happy accident for Scott, because once he discovered he could do comedy — and do it quite well — the chummy, creative L.A. comedy scene invited him into their fold. “Before, I was chasing some brass ring that never really existed and trying to get guest spots and dramatic roles. It wasn’t until I found the comedy scene that I started creating my own destiny,” he says. (Scott currently stars in NBC’s hit comedy Parks and Recreation). “We take things from the ground up, and everyone is very inspired by each other. We like to help each other out with projects. It’s a nice way to work.” A nice way — and also

Kids of his own For Scott, who is also a father to two young children, Friends with Kids really rings true. • “The film astutely observes things about the way you feel when you have a kid that I’d never seen in a movie before. I couldn’t believe that she was able to harness [those feelings] not having kids of her own,” he says of the film’s writer, director and lead actress Jennifer Westfeldt.

a fruitful one, as it was his friends who helped him land his first big starring film role in the new indie dramedy Friends with Kids. “Jen and Jon have been friends of mine for a long time, and they asked me to do it,” says Scott (that would be the film’s writer, director and lead actress, Jennifer Westfeldt and her boyfriend, Jon Hamm, who acts in the film as well as serves as an executive producer). In the film, Scott stars as Jason, who, along with his best friend Julie (Westfeldt), sees how children wreck their friends’ romantic relationships. They decide to have a child together while keeping their relationship platonic.

The return of the AMC show March 25 after a hiatus of a year and a half is cause for celebration, and there’s no better place to raise your glass than in Manhattan at one of Don Draper’s favourite haunts. While many of the places name-dropped in Mad Men no longer exist — Lutece, the Stork Club, Toots Shor’s — there are plenty that do, among them P.J. Clarke’s, the Roosevelt Hotel and Sardi’s. Some Manhattan bars, clubs and hotels are even offering packages, drinks or viewing parties to mark the show’s return. Of course, the series

is filmed in California, so what you see on TV are well-researched sets, not real Manhattan bars. But Mad Men fans will not be disappointed by reality: many of the establishments that turn up on the show retain a classy, retro vibe in real life, and can offer a fun, sophisticated setting for drinks or a meal. Judy Gelman and Peter Zheutlin, authors of The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook, provide A Handy List of Mad Men Haunts in their book along with recipes from them. “Some of these places just never go out of style, like the Grand Central Oyster Bar,” said Zheutlin. “It’s such a classic and bustling place.” Mad Men aficionados know the Oyster Bar at the landmark train terminal was not mentioned by name on the show, but it’s believed to be the place where Don takes Roger Sterling for a martini-and-oyster lunch.

The Roosevelt Hotel, 45 E. 45th St. at Madison Avenue, where Don stayed after his wife Betty threw him out, is offering a Mad Men in the City package, starting at $425 a night through June 30, so guests can “experience New York City as Don Draper would,” according to Kevin Croke, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing. Where the stars go for sunshine Anguilla. This tiny north Caribbean island is known for its jet-set crowd — but even for the budget conscious it can be accessible Stephanie gray

life@metronews.ca

It’s where Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr honeymooned. Where Derek Jeter, Chelsea Handler and Paul McCartney rang in the New Year. The destination that lures celebrities year after year is also one of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets: Anguilla: a tiny island in the north Caribbean. What makes this spot such an Alist magnet is the warmth and friendliness of the people, the secluded atmosphere and, most importantly, the beautiful beaches. For those without the celeb-

rity budget, there are simple ways to save and still feel like a star.

Think boutique It’s not all five-star resorts on the island. In fact, there are many affordable beach accommodations, including the Anacaona Boutique Hotel found on the gorgeous Meads Bay, with rooms starting at $150 per night. Another gem is the charming Lloyd’s Bed & Breakfast, the island’s oldest hotel, which is just a short walk from the beach. All year-round rooms for two are $145 per night.

Go off-peak You’ll pay through the roof between Christmas and New Year’s. Instead, consider visiting between May and August, when nightly prices can be as low as 50 per cent off the high season rates. Love to golf? CuisinArt Resort & Spa is home to the island’s first and only 18-hole

championship golf course that boasts stunning ocean views. Book a tee time after 2 p.m. and pay $130 to play, versus $230 for an earlier start time.

Take the ferry If you don’t have a private jet then don’t even look into flying direct to Anguilla. Instead, fly into St. Maarten and take a 20-minute ferry like everyone else. While the public ferry is your cheapest option at $15 one-way, a privately run charter is more convenient and drops you off right at the airport.

Smoked salmon proves that fine dining doesn’t have to be difficult Risotto. This tasty Champagne ShiitakeSalmon dish is elegant enough to impress even the most picky of your dinner guests Ingredients • 30 ml (2 tbsp) butter • 1 large onion, diced • 140 g (5 oz) shiitake mushroom caps, thinly sliced • 375 ml (1 1/2 cups) arborio rice • 550 ml (2 1/4 cups) dry sparkling wine • 750 ml (3 cups) chicken stock or broth, warmed to a simmer • 1 ml (1/4 tsp) ground cinnamon • 2 ml (1/2 tsp) salt • 1 ml (1/4 tsp) ground black pepper • 250 ml (1 cup) freshly grated Parmesan cheese • 125 g (4 oz) smoked salmon, cut into thin strips

At your next dinner party, take the fine dining route by easily whipping up a dinner that leaves your guests feeling like you’ve gone all out to prepare the perfect meal. The trick? Making sure a bit of bubbly is involved at every step of the process — beginning to end. This simple but richly decadent risotto studded with thinly sliced shiitake mushrooms and strips of smoked salmon will do it. A generous amount of sparkling wine added throughout the cooking process ensures the experience is sophisticated. Don’t like bubbles? You can always substitute a dry Riesling. Don’t care for smoked salmon? Substitute small shrimp (and cook for an extra 3 to 5 minutes, or until just pink and firm). Be sure to enjoy the remaining sparkling wine when you serve up this risotto.

In a skillet over mediumhigh heat, melt butter. Add onion and shiitakes; sauté for 4 minutes. Add rice and cook, stirring constantly, for

1 minute. Add 250 ml (1 cup) of the wine and cook, stirring constantly, until completely absorbed.

When all of the stock has been added and absorbed, add another 250 ml (1 cup) of the sparkling wine. Stir until absorbed. The rice should be tender, but still just barely firm at the centre. Stir in cinnamon, salt and pepper. Add cheese and mix until melted and creamy. Adjust seasonings.

Combine ingredients except champagne or sparkling wine in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and add sparkling wine, stir and strain into a martini glass. Float the rose petals on top of the cocktail.

Add half of the chicken stock or broth, stir several times, then let simmer until liquid is nearly completely absorbed. Continue adding stock, 125 ml (1/2 cup) at a time and stirring constantly until absorbed between each addition.

This fun appetizer is dazzling with its use of creamy cheese and a zip of lemon. It’s a perfect match for great tasting smoked salmon. Have one of your guests bring a bottle of Domaine Carneros rose sparkling wine to serve with these fancy appetizers. They work so well together. To make the zest, use a sharp citrus stripper to peel long strips from a lemon. Make sure you get only the yellow peel, as the white pith underneath is bitter. If you do this in advance, cover the zest with a damp paper towel and plastic wrap so the lemon curls do not dry out before you use them.

Senators preview

Ottawa at Montreal 7 :30 p.m. (TSN, RDS) The Senators (36-25-9) travel to Montreal (27-3211). The Canadiens have points in their last three games, winning against Edmonton and Vancouver before losing 3-2 in overtime to Buffalo on Monday. David Desharnais missed Saturday’s game against Vancouver, but returned and had a goal and an assist against the Sabres. Desharnais has 54 points this season. Max Pacioretty is on a six-game point streak, with five goals and six assists in that span. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Senators know Canadiens can still be dangerous NHL. Gap in standings hasn’t stopped Montreal from posting 2-1 record against Sens this season The Ottawa Senators may be looking down at Montreal in the standings this season but beating the Canadiens has still proved difficult. The Senators are 1-2 this season against Montreal going into games Wednesday at the Bell Centre and Friday at Scotiabank Place. “They’ve played really well against us,” said Senators coach Paul MacLean. “They’ve been difficult games so we expect the same thing.” Still the teams appear heading in opposite directions — Ottawa is 6-3-1 in its last 10 while Montreal was 3-6-1. Going into Tuesday night’s play, the Canadiens (27-32-11) were dead last in the Eastern Conference while the Senators (36-25-9) were seventh. But Ottawa players aren’t reading much into the numbers. And they know they will be playing in a hostile environment Wednesday. “Their fans are all over us all the time and they have so much energy in the first period and always come out hard,” said defenceman Jared Cowen. “In the past it’s just been weather the storm. Usually if you get past the first period not down a couple of goals you’re doing well and then you take it from there.” Cowen admits it can often be the same scenario when they play Montreal back at home. “They usually have a lot of fans here too so it’s like two road games for us.” The Senators also believe the Canadiens make for a dangerous opponent as teams who

Montreal’s Tomas Plekanec and Erik Cole celebrate a goal against Ottawa on Dec. 27.

are out of the playoff picture tend to play with less pressure. “Guys can just play how they really want to and can just relax,” said Cowen. “I think it’s important for us to be ready to go and on our toes. Sometimes those teams play a different game so I expect it will be a tough game.” The Senators were in the same situation last season when they sat near the bottom of the standings and it was dur-

ing those last few weeks that they played some of their best hockey. The Canadiens are 2-0-1 in their last three games and the Senators definitely took note of Montreal’s 4-1 win over Vancouver on the weekend. “I think we definitely are weary of a team like that, maybe other teams may take them for granted, but we know how it is to be that team,” said star forward Jason

PHILLIP MACCALLUM/GETTY IMAGES

Spezza. “You’re proud people as athletes and you want to show people you’re not going to quit and that’s for sure what’s going on in their room right now.” Ben Bishop will make his fourth straight start in goal for the Sens. Bishop is 2-0-1 with a .926 save percentage during that stretch. The six-foot-seven Bishop has heard about the rivalry between the two teams and the

intensity from Montreal fans and is looking forward to the challenge. “It’s one of those places you always want to go and play a game,” said Bishop. “I heard it’s like playing in a soccer stadium where they’re hooting and hollering the whole game so it should be a lot of fun. It takes you back to your college days when you’re getting screamed at the whole game.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Penguins. Crosby returning to team that’s already red hot Sidney Crosby is returning to new linemates and a new role with the NHL’s hottest team. But Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma still expects to see the Crosby of old despite his current 40-game layoff and the 102 games the star forward has missed over two seasons because of concussion-related issues. Crosby, out since Dec. 5, announced Tuesday he will play Thursday night against the Rangers in New York. The Penguins, riding a ninegame winning streak, are four points behind New York in the race for the top-seed in

the Eastern Conference. What already was a marquee game for the NHL just got even bigger. Much bigger. “I think it’s unrealistic that he’s going to step into Madison Square Garden and be the only show on the ice,” Bylsma said. “But I know how the guy plays. I know how fast he is going to go. I know what’s going to happen when he has the puck with speed. You know how he’s going to be able to play down low with the puck, and you expect to see that player step on the ice. That’s a really good hockey player. That’s the best hockey

player in the world.” Penguins centre Evgeni Malkin arguably has been that player with Crosby out, piling up a league-high 84 points. Now, Crosby is coming back at a key point in the season, with 14 games remaining for Pittsburgh and the playoff race still undecided. “I know Geno is excited to be on the same ice with Sid again,” Bylsma said of Malkin. “I still think it’s a great challenge for our team. We’re not a shoo-in to be a really good team when they all come back.” Crosby admittedly feels

better than he did when he returned nearly four months ago after missing the final 41 games of last season and the first 20 games this season. He dazzled the New York Islanders with a two-goal, four point night on Nov. 21, but he didn’t have another goal in the other seven games he played before the concussion symptoms returned following a physical Dec. 5 game against Boston. This time, general manager Ray Shero said, “He feels better than last time and knows what to expect this time.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Line dancing For now, Penguins coach Dan Bylsma plans to keep intact his productive top two lines of Chris Kunitz-Evgeni Malkin-James Neal and Steve Sullivan-Jordan StaalPascal Dupuis. •

Still, Bylsma plans to put Sidney Crosby and Malkin together at times and also slot Crosby and Staal together, a unit previously unseen. The coach plans to limit Crosby to 14-15 minutes a game.

Tossing a Dart into the fray

ALL PHOTOS WHEELBASE

2013 Dodge Dart • Type. Four-door, front-wheeldrive compact sedan. • Engines (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (160); 1.4-litre SOHC I4, turbocharged (160); 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (184). • Mileage: L/100 km (city/hwy): 6.4/4.9 (2.0, est.). • Base Price: $17,500 (est.).

Review. Chrysler re-enters the compact sedan battlefield MALCOLM GUNN

Wheelbase Media

You can thank Giulietta for the soon-to-arrive 2013 Dodge Dart. No, Giulietta isn’t an automotive design studio, corporate executive or even a flavour of ice cream. It’s an Alfa Romeo automobile that’s the basis for a brandnew four-door compact sedan that wears the reconstituted Dodge Dart badge. The fact that both Chrysler/ Dodge and Alfa Romeo are controlled by the vast Italy-based Fiat automotive group has everything to do with the new Dart’s creation. Although the Dart and Giulietta share the same basic platform, the Dodge version is enlarged, gets its own sheetmetal (Giulietta is hatchback, after all) and interior. The engine selection is

Decked out

The side profile doesn’t have the sculpture of a car like the Hyundai Elantra, which might endear the Dart to no-frills buyers. However, the Dart can be decked out with leather, dual-zone climate control and navigation. The R/T gets its own five-spoke wheels. straight from Fiat. The Dart is also being built at a Chrysler assembly plant in Illinois with mid-2012 slated for the official coming-out party. Despite its Italian origins, the Dart looks like a full-fledged member of the Dodge family as the signature crosshair grille is framed by a mouth-agape grille. The Dart’s bold statement will be important since Chrysler hasn’t had a compact sedan in play since the Neon back in 2005. Meanwhile, virtually every mainstream automaker has continued to offer trunk-lidded compacts, earning plenty of currency –– both in dollars and brand awareness –– in the process. That might explain why the Dart moniker has been returned from the 1960s and ’70s, when it was applied to a series of two- and four-door compact models. The Dart name will probably resonate with older customers –– who will either love or hate the idea of bringing it back –– although many younger car buyers will likely miss the connection completely.

Interior

The cabin design is a standout, with futuristiclooking gauges, equally non-traditional controlpanel displays and unique storage area beneath the front passenger seatcushion. Of note is the customizable screen that sits between the tachometer and fuel gauge.

Engines

The base engine is a 160-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder that’s standard in the SE, SXT, Rallye and Limited. All four trims can be upgraded to the 1.4-litre turbocharged fourcylinder that’s rated at the same 160 horses. Exclusive to the sporty R/T is a non-turbo 184-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder. By comparison

The black grille surround is exclusive to the R/T model. This is the elegant Limited trim with the optional 1.4-litre turbocharged engine out of the Fiat 500 Abarth.

The otherwise clean interior might be a bit overdone with the glowing dash piping. The gauge layout is innovative, though.

A sobering thought We all know that drinking and driving is a major no-no and should never be attempted under any circumstance. To ensure you, your friends and/or family members are well below the legal limit before getting behind the wheel, get the Safedrive deluxe Personal Alcohol Detector. This handy breathalyzer is portable enough to keep in your pocket or purse. It uses gas-sensor technology to estimate percentage of alcohol in the blood, by volume, up to 0.12 (well over the limit in most jurisdictions). Once a breath sample has been collected from blowing into an attached mouth vent, a reading is then displayed. After each use, the unit recalibrates itself, which eliminates the problem of false readings. The Breathalyzer retails for about $25 US and can be purchased from alcohol-test.net.

Turbocharged Fiat 500 Abarth is deliziosa Autopilot

The short list

Auto pilot

Mike Goetz drive@metronews.ca

The first time a Fiat 500 got the Abarth treatment was back in 1958. At that time, Abarth was an independent tuning company, and not part of Fiat as it is now, and Gina Lollobregida was hard to ignore on the silver screen. Back then Abarth took Fiat’s just-introduced, rear-engined mini-car, and recreated it as the Abarth 595 by raising the compression ratio on the 479 cc engine, fitting a Weber carburetor, optimizing fuel and intake systems, and adding a full Abarth exhaust system. This doubled horsepower from 13 to 26! The Abarth 595 evolved into Abarth 695, and the spunky, little Fiats went on to claim 900 individual race victories by 1965. Fiat’s newest take on the “small but wicked” theme is the new 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth. Its turbocharged, 1.4-litre “MultiAir” engine is not quite double the output of Fiat 500’s base engine (101 hp/98 lb-ft of torque), but a pretty decent upgrade. How about 160 horses and 170 torques? Of course, the over-achieving Fiat has more than just power to offer. The car has been lowered, big-wheeled, big-braked, stiffened and outfitted with quicker steering and better suspension. It also belts out a gnarly wail, via its Abarth-tuned dual-exhaust system. The highlight of the inter-

ior makeover is the leather, flat-bottom steering wheel — one of the nicest I’ve ever fondled. At the car’s recent press launch in Nevada, Fiat had no qualms about letting journalists thrash them about the Spring Mountain Racing Facility. The Abarth took to the track like a C-list celebrity to a reality TV series, and it wasn’t nearly as temperamental. In fact, it’s a very forgiving, and easy, car to drive quickly, making it ideal for anyone contemplating a first-ever track-day car, which you could also use every day

as a cool, fuel-efficient streetcar. Prices start at $23,995, and each one comes standard with a track-day experience. The Fiat 500 has been optimized as a space-efficient city car. Translation: its bulbous body, 64/36 front/rear weight distribution, and front-wheel drive, are not optimized for racy car activities. But that the racy transformation was done, anyways, is just another one of the charms of this engaging, hot-headed Italian. If you want one, don’t drag your feet.

“We’ll sell everyone we can get,” says Ed Broadbear, VP of Marketing, Chrysler Canada. He half-jokingly added that he’s got his fingers crossed that the Abarth flops in U.S., so more units can be diverted north. He’s already heard from many Canadian customers who got it bad for Abarth and can’t wait to get their hands on one. Its potential for future cult status has already been noted by Hagerty Insurance, who included the Fiat Abarth 500 on its current list of “Future Collector Cars Under $100,000.”

Veracruz revered for value and luxury Second Gear. 2007 to 2011 Hyundai Veracruz

Common Issues

Some owners have reported problems getting the keyfob to open the power tailgate, a CD player that won’t eject discs, or a faulty ‘resume’ button for the cruise control system. Ensure these features all work properly –– and check the automatic climate control, air conditioner, entertainment console, power seats and all lights, too.

Justin Pritchard

Drive@metronews.ca

Hyundai’s Veracruz hit the Canadian market for the 2007 model year with the goal of putting an affordable luxury crossover on the scene for thousands less than a comparable machine from Germany or Japan. As the range-topping ute from the Korean automaker, Veracruz offered up top levels of comfort and style, alongside a competitive warranty and honest pricing. Most X5 and ML shoppers weren’t likely cross-shopping Hyundai dealers — though the Veracruz effectively put a world-class crossover within reach of many Canadians.

Verdict torstar news service

Engine

What Owners Like

All models got a 3.8-litre V6 with 260 horsepower and a six-speed automatic transmission. Most had AWD, though a lower-priced, front-drive Veracruz was available — depending on the year.

CLASSIFIEDS

HELP WANTED

AUTOMOTIVE

What Owners Dislike

Owners say a combination of quality, styling, interior appearance, safety ratings and a great driving position attracted them to the Veracruz, while attractive pricing and Hyundai’s warranty coverage helped seal the deal.

Complaints include limited third-row seating space, which is a standard gripe in most three-row crossover models. Some owners do report a rough or jarring ride, particularly on models with larger wheels and on rougher roads.

Though information is somewhat sparse, the Veracruz looks to be a solid performer with no systematic or glaring problems reported by its small but largely-happy owner community. Opt for as new and low-mileage a unit as your budget allows, maximizing your protection from Hyundai’s warranty.
