Wheels in motion to unionize cabbies HRM taxi drivers. Treated without respect by municipality for too long: Jollymore ALEX BOUTILIER
Preliminary stage
CAW organizer Rick Rose says he expects to know within the next couple of weeks if there’s enough interest among HRM taxi drivers in unionizing.

The Canadian Auto Workers union is testing the waters for the possible unionization of taxi operators in HRM. CAW regional organizer Rick Rose confirmed Tuesday the union is in the early stages of a membership drive for the municipality’s taxi companies. “Things are really at the preliminary stage,” Rose told Metro Halifax. “We have had a small group of drivers approach us and talk about the prospects of doing that.” That group is headed by Garry Jollymore, an independent cab driver who has been floating the idea of unionization for the past five years. Jollymore penned a pamphlet that has been circulating amongst taxi drivers urging them to sign on to the initiative. Jollymore cited an “unusual” disciplinary system, the lack of benefits, and disrespect from the municipality as reasons for joining a union. “The recent bus strike is a good example,” writes Jollymore. “The city used us as strike breakers (when they) opened the zones and we be-

came pawns in their battle with the transit union.” “The main benefit for organizing this way is that it gives us a better means to deal with HRM, its staff and other bureaucracies. We have been treated without respect from HRM for far too long.” Jollymore, who sits on HRM’s Taxi and Limousine Liaison Group, didn’t return telephone and e-mail requests for an interview. Rose said if CAW determines there is sufficient interest in unionization, the union will proceed with one employer at a time — beginning with the city’s largest company, Casino Taxi. “Our approach will be to focus on all of the drivers that are employed by a given taxi company versus just all drivers in HRM,” Rose said. Rose said he doesn’t believe the CAW has made an attempt to unionize taxis in Halifax before. Mayor Peter Kelly was unconcerned Tuesday, saying HRM would support the drivers should they decide to unionize.

Occupy N.S. back to weigh pros and cons of suing city The return. Event scheduled to begin at noon Saturday JENNIFER TAPLIN
jennifer.taplin@metronews.ca
Occupy Nova Scotia is using a return to Grand Parade this weekend as an opportunity to consider whether or not to move forward with suing the Halifax Regional Municipality over their group’s eviction from Victoria Park on Remembrance Day. A press release issued on Tuesday morning indicates the group will meet in Grand Parade on Saturday to discuss the “pros and cons” associated with a possible lawsuit. “Locally, we’ve made no secret since the vindication in court this week that we are all looking at the options to sue Halifax Regional Municipality,” the release

reads. The group plans to hear speeches from occupiers, supporters and commentators. Then, in true Occupy fashion, a “democratic general assembly” will be held “so the public can help (them) decide if (they) will sue the city for their actions on November 11.” Later Tuesday inside city hall, Coun. Debbie Hum tried to make public the minutes of the in-camera meeting of Halifax Regional Council on Nov. 5, 2011 but lost the two-thirds majority vote required. Hum said her motion was motivated by last week’s decision to drop the charges
on the 11 adult occupiers arrested following their eviction from Victoria Park. “I felt in the light of transparency that the discussion in camera was such could be made public and should be made public,” she said. Hum added she believes Occupy N.S.’s potential lawsuit was behind many of the no votes at council Tuesday. “It certainly wasn’t in my mind. I just feel that obviously the Crown attorney didn’t feel there was any reason to charge the occupiers and those minutes should be released to the public.” Crown Prosecutor Rick Woodburn told the media last week police had reasonable grounds to lay the charges at the time but wouldn’t speak to why exactly the charges were dropped.

Council passes buck on HRMbyDesign appeal

Halifax Regional Council has heard the very first appeal under HRMbyDesign. William Strug, owner of the Tramway building, objects to the plans for a nextdoor development on Barrington Street He launched the appeal in March and it was heard at council on Tuesday. Lydon Lynch Architects has designed a six-storey glass office/retail building for 1592 Barrington St. Council will decide next week whether to demolish the current building — the ramshackle two-storey building with a leftover CD Plus

Councillor reaction
“This is a civil matter and should not have been before us.” Coun. Dawn Sloane, on the Barrington Street development appeal
sign on it from the last tenant. Strug and his lawyer argued the taller building would block Tramway’s light, would encroach on a right of way, would block the view from the south side of the building, and would cause additional stress on the roof
from snow and rain. City staff and representatives for the developers knocked down the arguments. The right of way was extinguished in 1997, Halifax ruled out the ‘right to light’ in 1860, and there’s no engineering evidence that the new building would cause problems with snow and rain. But in the end, HRM’s solicitor Martin Ward said these issues are out of council’s jurisdiction and need to be heard in a courtroom. Coun. Bill Karsten moved to not grant the appeal and the rest of council agreed.

Schmidtville. HRM council expediting heritage recognition Schmidtville is on the fast track to heritage status. Halifax regional council agreed on Tuesday to expedite the process, which would normally take several years, to consider the downtown neighbourhood a heritage area. Dating back to the 19th century, Schmidtville is bordered by Clyde, Morris, Brenton and Queen streets. It is one of the municipality’s oldest intact neighbourhoods. Coun. Sue Uteck said the Friends of Schmidtville have been working on this for seven or eight years now and need to move quickly to save the area from development. They’re also concerned the Nova Scotia Liquor Corp. property on Clyde Street is looking to move, which would leave the building vacant. “I think Schmidtville is a unique part of the municipal-

Prevention. Chicagobased program treats violence as a disease haley ryan
halifax@metronews.ca
Baltimore has seen a 56 per cent reduction in homicides in just one neighbourhood. Chicago has watched the number of shootings decline by up to 34 per cent over a three-year period. Both statistics are directly related to a violence-prevention program called CeaseFire, which police in Halifax are keeping an eye on to see if those kinds of numbers are
possible here. “It’s the beginning of a good conversation, which will hopefully turn into action,” said Halifax Regional Police Deputy Chief Bill Moore on Tuesday. Frank Perez is national director of training for CeaseFire Chicago, and is visiting Halifax this week to introduce the program to local police officials. A core value of the strategy is to look at violence as a disease that can be treated, and not to blame the people caught up in these crimes but, instead, to change the way they see things. “If you get them to think, that’s half the battle,” Perez said during his presentation
Shootings • HRM has seen a big rise in shootings the past two years. In 2010 there were 45 shootings, a number that jumped to 75 last year. Through April this year, there have been 25 shootings.
on Tuesday at the Halifax Club. “We just have to be a another voice of reason.” He said CeaseFire only targets the most risky areas of a city and those “most likely to shoot or be shot,” making it easier for the staff they hire to make an impact. Perez said the group hires local “violence interrupters”

who are known in the community, and have a stake in what goes on. That way, he said, the people who may have once been involved in gang violence can help others make better life decisions. “I don’t care if your city is 250,000 or 2.5 million, this applies everywhere,” Perez said in an interview afterwards. Moore said a CeaseFire unit in Halifax would focus on violent “hot spots,” specifically north-end Dartmouth and Preston areas, but it would add in a mobile aspect following individuals as well. “We have a good idea of who these people are,” Moore said. “It’s the same groups in different areas.”
HRM to pay millions to switch to LED Switching over to LED streetlights, as mandated by the province, will cost HRM millions. “At the end of the day we’re not here to discuss if we will do it, because the province has mandated we have to do it,” said Coun. Barry Dalrymple. On Tuesday, Halifax regional council voted to come up with an implementation plan to convert to LED
and take ownership of all streetlights. Nova Scotia Power Inc. owns thousands of streetlights and charges HRM for maintenance through power rates, while HRM maintains some others. A staff report shows it would be cheaper over a 20year life cycle with a 10-year implementation if HRM took over maintenance of all the streetlights.
Energy efficient • Besides the enormous amount of emissions it will save, switching to LED will reduce streetlight energy consumption by 51 per cent.
It would cost $60 million for HRM to take over, but $84 million if NSP maintained
them all. Keeping the status quo of dual responsibility would cost $70 million. The province has given municipalities five years to make the switch but HRM is arguing for 10. Dalrymple said negotiations are underway and they might get seven. “This is an awful lot of money,” he said. jennifer taplin/metro

RBC has purchased office space — and naming rights — in the Armour Group’s Waterside Centre in downtown Halifax. Armour Group CEO Scott McCrae made the announcement on Tuesday along with RBC’s regional president, Kim Mason, at the Historic Properties. “We’re very pleased, proud, to have the country’s leading financial institution choosing this site,” McCrae said. “It reaffirms that location, which already for 200 years has been close to, or the centre point of, the central business district. It reaffirms it into the future.” RBC is expected to move

Mason said the new centre offers a number of advantages, including planned gold certification in the green-building program Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and more visibility. “It’s more in line with our brand of being very proud of our history, and also being very progressive and looking towards the future,” Mason said. “I think that this building is a real nice blend of past and future.” Neither MacRae nor Mason would disclose how much RBC is paying for the naming rights and the square footage. to an immediate influx of more tenants. “(But) for tenants considering a move, many tenants — national, international tenants — want to be in the centre
of downtown,” he said. “I think that helps because it sort of restates that this is the centre of downtown and this is where we should be.”

Maureen MacDonald travelled to Truro on Tuesday to address the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union at its annual general meeting. But Nova Scotia’s health and wellness minister said she wouldn’t comment on the most pressing issue facing the union and the patients they serve: the upcoming
wage negotiations between NSNU and the district health authorities. “(I) said that they need to take their issues to the bargaining table with the employer and go through a collective-bargaining process,” MacDonald told reporters at Province House. “I’m not prepared to go to the annual meeting of the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union and negotiate the contract there from the podium.” The nurses’ union has been less guarded in its comments on the upcoming bargaining process, slated to take place over four days at the end of June. Janet Hazelton, the president of NSNU, said she
expects the government will come to the table with a similar deal to the one awarded to Capital Health nurses in 2011 and, more recently, healthcare workers with the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union Local 42. “If this government and our employers do not show the respect that the nurses that I represent quite frankly deserve, then that will not be productive,” Hazelton said from Truro Tuesday. “I totally, totally anticipate that we will go to the table at the end of June and we’ll be successful in achieving wage parity with our counterparts in Capital Health.” The Progressive Conserva-

Premier Darrell Dexter says it was insensitive for executives at Halifax-based utility Emera to throw themselves a party one day after the private company proposed to hike energy rates. Emera, the parent company of Nova Scotia Power, hosted the event last Wednesday at a waterfront restaurant for its executives and board of directors. Nova Scotia Power announced last Tuesday it was applying to increase rates by three per cent annually in 2014 and 2015. Dexter said on Tuesday Emera showed “very poor judgment” in throwing the bash at a time when many Nova Scotians are struggling to make ends meet. “It shows a lack of sensitivity with respect to the way people are feeling,” he said at the provincial legislature. “There’s no question that anything that hits people’s pocketbooks like this, it causes a flare of very justified concern.” Dexter added Emera has a “fundamental difficulty” if it doesn’t understand that Nova Scotians may be upset about the rate increase. Emera spokeswoman Sasha Irving did not return calls seeking comment. It’s the second time in as many weeks Emera and Nova Scotia Power have faced scathing criticism in the legislature for their money management. Last week, documents posted on Emera’s website revealed big raises for some of its top executives in 2011, including CEO Chris

No one was hurt. It was a startling beginning for a man who promised to be a more “normal” president and less flashy than his predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy, who was ousted by voters after one term for his handling of a stagnant economy plagued by joblessness. After a succession of ceremonial inauguration events, Hollande took off in a Falcon 7X aircraft for Berlin. Targeted, he walks away from blast in Bogota Two killed, more than 30 injured. Long black wig found after disguised attacker attaches explosive to ex-minister’s SUV A bomb targeting a hardline former Colombian interior minister killed two of his bodyguards and injured at least 31 people in a brazen attack in Bogota’s uptown commercial district Tuesday. Fernando Londono suffered minor shrapnel wounds and was out of danger, authorities said. Video footage showed a stunned Londono, his face bruised, being led from the wreckage. Bogota Mayor Gustavo Petro said a pedestrian attached an explosive to a door of Londono’s armoured SUV and set it off remotely. The attacker “walked away disguised” and a wig of long black hair and a hat were found in the area, Petro told reporters.

Republican says sorry for ‘Sieg Heil’
Twenty years of deception?
Female soldiers this week are moving into new jobs in once all-male units as the U.S. army ends barriers to keep them away from battle. The policy change is being tested in nine brigades. Experience in the past decade showed women were fighting and dying alongside male soldiers.
Steve Vaillancourt was eventually allowed back into debate.
A Newark Liberty airport security supervisor pleaded not guilty Tuesday to identity theft. Nigerian Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole’s alleged offences took place over 20 years. His bail was raised from $75,000 to $250,000. Identity theft carries a maximum 10 years jail time.

Massacre to shine light on Syria? Now UN team may tell world. Observers nearby as troops fire on funeral mourners, 20 feared dead
Burst of violence
“This is a real massacre and it took place in the presence of UN observers.” Rami Abdul-Rahman, human rights official.
A United Nations convoy of observers was blasted by a roadside bomb in Syria on Tuesday. It happened just minutes after regime forces gunned down mourners at a funeral procession nearby, witnesses said. Twenty people may have been killed. It was not clear how close the observers were to the funeral shootings. But if confirmed, a regime attack on civilians directly in front of the observers could put pressure on them to describe publicly what they are seeing in Syria. They report back to the UN but have not publicized their findings.
A video of the bomb attack was posted online by activists. There were no injuries. “The front of a UN car took a direct hit,” said activist Fadi al-Yassin. “Everyone ran in panic but the observers stayed in the car. People tried to talk to them but they wouldn’t even open their windows.” The two attacks took place in the town of Khan Sheikhoun. Last week, a roadside bomb struck a Syrian military truck in the south of the country just seconds after the head of the U.N. observers team drove by in a convoy. the associated press

Feds send out mixed signals for EI changes
Facebook. Raised IPO values company at more than $100 billion US Already expected to be the largest-ever initial public offering for an Internet company, Facebook is making its IPO even bigger. On Tuesday, the world’s largest online social network increased the planned price range for its stock to $34 to $38 US per share in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. That’s up from its previous range of $28 to $35 US. At the upper limit of $38, the sale would raise about $12.8 billion US. The move, which values Facebook as high as $104 billion US, comes amid growing investor excitement about the offering. Analysts are comparing the frenzy surrounding Facebook’s IPO to Google’s in 2004, though
Quoted
“This is a deal that literally must work, in that it is so high-profile.” in sheer size the latter pales in comparison. At the same time, half of Americans think the expected value for Facebook is too high, according to a new Associated Press-CNBC poll conducted before the company raised its expected stock price on Tuesday. Only a third of those surveyed said they think Facebook’s expected value is appropriate.

Murdoch’s media star charged One of Rupert Murdoch’s most trusted lieutenants, former U.K. tabloid editor Rebekah Brooks, seen leaving her lawyer’s office in London with husband Charlie Brooks, was charged Tuesday alongside five others with conspiring to hide evidence of phone hacking. The 43-year-old Brooks, who quit as News International chief executive in July, faces three separate allegations of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice — an offence which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The charges against Brooks, her husband and four aides are the first prosecutions since police reopened inquiries 18 months ago into wrongdoing by the country’s scandal-hungry press. The Harper government sent confusing signals Tuesday about coming changes to employment insurance rules, declaring in favour of a hardline approach while indicating the new measures will be moderate. Human Resources Minister Diane Finley told the House of Commons there’s no plan to force jobless workers receiving EI benefits to take any job available, as the finance minister seemed to suggest the day before. “Canadians will be expected to take jobs appropriate to their skill level in their area,” she said. That is decidedly differ-
ent from Finance Minister Jim Flaherty’s comments on Monday, when he said he was brought up to believe that “any job is a good job” and that the current EI rules are a disincentive to work. Canadians won’t know exactly what the government has in mind until new regulations on defining “suitable employment” are unveiled in the next few months. In response to a question in the Commons, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appeared to back his finance minister. the canadian press

And we thought this stuff was only in movies While the rest of us are lined up at the multiplex to watch CGI superheroes toss CGI archPaul Sullivan villains around in The Avengers, metronews.ca/justsaying the real nerds have, as you might expect, already moved on. To something called “quantum entanglement.” Quantum entanglement is weird. Somehow, subatomic particles act on each other and it doesn’t matter if they’re in the same room or at opposite ends of the Milky Way. As soon as you know that one is “up,” you know the other is “down” and vice versa. That’s an oversimplification, but this entire column is an oversimplification. Trust me, you really don’t want the unabridged version. Quantum entanglement is so weird it blew Einstein’s mind. He called it “spooky action at a distance,” and thought it invalidated quantum theory until physicist John Bell proved it actually happens, thereby inventing Bell’s Theorem. Weird as it may be, quantum entanglement has fired up the imaginations of scientists everywhere, who think that someday it will mean superfast quantum computers, inBeam me up, Scotty stant communications across vast distances, time-travel As we speak, on sciand even teleportation, as in ence blogs everywhere, “Beam me up, Scotty.” As we speak, on science people are earnestly blogs everywhere, people debating the safety are earnestly debating the hazards associated with safety hazards associated with — whether or teleportation — wheth- teleportation not it’s the actual Captain er or not it’s the actual Kirk who arrives back on Captain Kirk who arrives the Enterprise or a quantum copy. The real Kirk has died back on the Enterprise and is left behind on Regulus or a quantum copy. III — his quantum copy just doesn’t know it. Back on the real Earth, progress is being made on untangling quantum entanglement. One group of Chinese scientists have managed to entangle eight photons (particles of light), and just this week another group of Chinese scientists announced that they have managed to go where no geek has gone before, teleporting an entangled pair of quantum bits, or qubits, 97 kilometres across a lake. This is a big deal, as the damn qubits have a habit of unravelling or unentangling or whatever, due to problems not encountered in theorems, such as imperfections in optics and air turbulence. It may seem like a small step for humankind (actually really small — subatomic, even), but how long could it be before we can instantly beam William Shatner from one Priceline hotel to the other? You have to love this stuff, even if it never means you’ll be able to honeymoon on Shiralea VI and be back in time for work on Monday. As you think about this idea, of real matter acting in lockstep mysteriously across time and space, you get a glimpse of just how wonderful and mysterious the universe really is. And you don’t have to pay for parking or popcorn.

Endangered tiny tortoises born It’s only the size of a coin, but this tortoise is priceless. centimetres is the approximate height of the first Egyptian tortoise hatchling, the same as the diameter of a small coin.
• Live long but still small. Adults live for up to 50 years. These tortoises can grow to around 15 centimetres long and weigh 500 grams. This species of tortoise is the smallest in the northern hemisphere. The speckled padloper of South Africa is the world’s smallest tortoise. • Egyptian by name only. It’s believed the Egyptian tortoise no longer exists in its namesake country. The species disap-
peared there some twenty years ago due to acidification of land, overgrazing and pet trade over-collecting. • In decline. “Their numbers have declined severely in the last 30 years,” Sherif Baha el-Din, scientific adviser at the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, told ABC News. He said a survey in Egypt in 1994 had failed to locate any wild tortoises at all. “They are very ancient animals and haven’t changed much over the years, which makes them more susceptible to problems.”

••••• Although it’s slightly more conventional than his breakout hit Borat, funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator is also only slightly less obscene and outrageous. Starring as the fascist despot of fictional Wadiya, Cohen’s idiotic oppressor mistakenly gets lost in America and develops an unlikely romance with a fuzzy-underarmed feminist (Anna Faris). Certainly more plot-driven than his previous pictures, The Dictator is also more predictable. Still, with Cohen’s uncanny ability to bring heart and hilarity to even the most offensive of characters, The Dictator commands its audience with an iron (and at times ironic) fist. STEVE GOW

While brushing his teeth, Norman pretends that he is a zombie in the children’s animated feature ParaNorman.
The not-so-normal making of ParaNorman Stop-motion technology. Elaborate, painstaking animation gives this children’s monster movie a gritty but stunning feel CAROLYN MORRIS
scene@metronews.ca
It’s a story of a little boy who is bullied at school. It would be universal, except that Norman is able to see ghosts and zombies. And the 3-D movie is shot using labour-intensive stop-motion technology. At a time when
computer-generated imagery is creating stunning and elaborate animation, the tactile quality of ParaNorman is refreshingly unusual. Part comedy, part horror pastiche, ParaNorman (in theatres August 17) is produced by Laika, the studio that made Coraline, a 2009 3-D stop-motion children’s film, nominated for an Academy Award for best animated feature. ParaNorman writer and codirector Chris Butler has a soft spot for the paranormal, having grown up on The Goonies, Ghostbusters and Scooby-Doo. “I think there is something thrilling to kids about monsters. As long as you’re saying that there’s a monster and it can be beaten. I think that’s import-
HANDOUT
ant,” he says. The directors wanted a raw, gritty animation style. And the studio focused on real-life materials to achieve it. In its puppet and set-construction departments, fine artists, jewelers, engineers, and even chemists crafted the characters and scenes. While the movie boasts some high-profile voices — including young stars Kodi Smit-McPhee and Anna Kendrick -— much of the “acting” is shared by an invisible cast of about 25 animators who work alone, manipulating the puppets on separate sets, and sometimes shooting as few as 15 or 16 frames in an entire day (less than one second of footage). On a good day, they’ll shoot several seconds.
Director duo
Sam Fell and Chris Butler (writer) teamed up to codirect this children’s film. • According to Butler, the original idea was “John Carpenter-meets-John Hughes.” Carpenter directed horror classic Halloween, while Hughes directed Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. • Co-director Fell compared the film’s look to William Eggleston’s photography of objects like junk in a gutter, or a chainlink fence.
Bret Michaels and organizers of the Tony Awards have settled a lawsuit filed by the rocker after a 2009 incident in which he was hit in the head with a set piece and suffered injuries that contributed to a brain hemorrhage that nearly killed him. The confidential settlement also covers Michaels’ claims against CBS, which aired the show — and the mishap. The Poison frontman blamed the network for airing the moment and claimed Tony Awards producers never warned him there would be a set change after he and his band performed Nothin’ But a Good Time. Bobby Brown: The new, new edition Comeback. Now on tour with bandmates, Brown says he’s ready to return to his solo career with his first album in 14 years
Bobby Brown’s new album is due out on June 5. Joe Giblin/the associated press file
Bobby Brown says it took him a long time to come out with a new album because he’s spent so much time trying to get his life on track. “It’s what I’ve been through throughout my life, and just trying to heal myself through my music,” the 43-year-old singer said in a recent interview. Masterpiece is Brown’s first album in 14 years. He was a multi-platinum star with New Edition and later developed his solo career. But his well-documented battle with drugs and his legal woes led to his musical decline. His turbulent marriage to Whitney Houston further eroded his image. Although he was arrested for DUI in March, Brown in-
sists he has been drug-free for more than seven years. He said his attempt to get his life in order is part of the reason why the album took so long to make. “When you’re working on yourself, you have to really concentrate on that and it takes a back seat to what you want to do and what I’m gonna do,” he said. Brown says Masterpiece, which he started working on last year, is “the best album I’ve done so far.” “But I’m going to do better in the near future,” he said. “I just want to get back to what I do, which is entertainment, and this is the start to me getting back to what I want to do.” Brown is engaged to his manager, Alicia Etheridge, with whom he has a young son. He also has other older children, including 19-yearold Bobbi Kristina, his only child with Houston. Brown said he and Etheridge plan a private wedding, and described his life as content.
Brown, on Whitney
Superstar Whitney Houston drowned in February in Beverly Hills, Calif.; her death was complicated by heart disease and cocaine use, according to authorities. • Houston’s career was derailed by her drug use, which came to the public’s attention during her marriage to Brown. • In a recent interview with the Today show’s Matt Lauer, Brown denied that he got his late ex-wife addicted to drugs. • “The Matt Lauer interview was just for me to clear the air about what everyone was feeling about my ex-wife’s death,” Brown said.
“I’m happy right now in my life, I’m comfortable with who I am,” he said. “It’s just better.” The associated press

METRO DISH OUR TAKE ON THE WORLD OF CELEBRITIES
The Word
Maybe Jay-Z should run for President the word
Monica Weymouth scene@metronews.ca
When Jay-Z went on CNN yesterday and was asked about Obama’s recent public support of gay marriage, he didn’t necessarily say anything groundbreaking. We’re all humans, we’re wasting our time talking about this, love happens: you’ve heard this before. But, that said, everything sounds so much cooler — so obviously a good idea — when it’s delivered with a little Jay-Z swagger. This guy should consider running for office — or calling us: “I’ve always thought it as something that was still holding the country back. What people do in their own homes is their business.” Of course it is. I bet your home is nice. It seems like it would smell really nice and have good snacks. Swoon.

The crosscountry trek will kick off on July 13 in Toronto with stops in Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver. Jamie Oliver wants you On May 19, the famous British chef asks you to join his healthy-eating crusade, a.k.a. Food Revolution Day ‘I’m not anti-burger or anti-pizza. I’m anti- shit food,’ he says Romina McGuinness Metro World News
Chef Jamie Oliver has devoted his career to fighting unhealthy eating — and you can see why: Global obesity has more than doubled since 1980. Each year, 2.8 million adults around the world die as a result of being overweight. On Saturday May 19, the British TV star launches his latest effort, Food Revolution Day, a global campaign that asks you to think about eating right: host a food event serving organic foods, or a locallysourced dinner party, or start a campaign at work or school. Check out foodrevolutionday.com for more ideas and events in your city. Here’s Oliver on why you should join the movement:
We would eat anything this man served us. David Loftus
The obesity crisis: How did we end up here? The main issue is the Western diet: it’s single-handedly more responsible for damage to global health than anything else. In so many Western countries, we have three generations of people who were never
taught how to cook at home. Both parents were at work, food education at school is so shit, they can’t learn there. I’ve been in houses where kids only hydrate on fizzy drinks and show no interest in tap water. And technology, freezing techniques and processed foods have only made things worse. Will the world ever get healthy again? I actually think that multinationals and fast-food companies are the best people to lead the change. If they chose to get behind healthy eating, they would do a better job than any other government or individual. If you thought the oil and petrol industry was complicated and causing wars, think again. The food industry is on another level. The problem is the corruption between food industries and governments. We need to address smaller issues like chicken farming or pink slime. Stop these products from ever being registered. How f—ing dare they?
And how will the Food Revolution Day help? I’m not anti-burger or antipizza; I’m anti- shit food. With Food Revolution Day, I’m trying to get as many people as possible to stir the pot. We all need to become a little fussier about what we put in our gobs [mouths]. When you put something in your mouth, it’s a very personal thing that affects you straight away. You’ve already tried to change North American food habits once. What makes you think that they will listen to you this time? I expect nothing. People may not want me around but I don’t think I’ve ever wasted my time. I don’t give a shit if people think I’m crazy. North America is difficult, as it’s where a lot of the unhealthy foods and brands are created. It’s the eye of the storm. Most countries eventually follow their trends, whether they like it or not.
Jamie’s Vegetarian Chili
Full of bright vegetables and bold flavours, this healthy dish is worth the chopping • Make it tonight. metronews.ca/food
Ultimately, though, do you think most Americans would rather go to McDonald’s than go to the gym? Things need to change otherwise the whole country will come to a standstill. People won’t be mobile. It’s a question of national security. How can you train an army if the nation is obese? Progress will happen. They have no choice.

I found my current employer, a digital agency called rtraction, through networking on Twitter. I learned about the company and people through their extensive use of Twitter and had interacted with several of them personally before approaching them for the opportunity to work as a marketing intern. There wasn’t an existing position or opening, but they had me in to chat and decided that they would like to have me on the team, and that was how the marketing internship position was created. Employers: please interact with students and recent grads on social media sites! It’s where we are, and it’s where we look for employers (depending on the industry). There is huge potential to interest future (and current) employees, solicit feedback, and grow/maintain a positive corporate image. Google, Fairmont, and RIM are perfect examples of companies doing it, and doing it well. I finished up my degree last year and started my search for a full-time position in marketing (particularly social media marketing) but ended up staying on with rtraction as a digital marketing strategist. Fast-forwarding a tad, you should know that neither of us got the job as the company underwent a bit of a hiring freeze (it happens). But I was still intrigued by my competition’s lack of knowledge of markup languages. How is it, considering how prevalent the Internet and technology are in most fields nowadays,
that some still don’t know how to code? Sure, it’s as easy now as it ever was to fully customize your Tumblr, Blogger or Twitter page with a simple click or drag and drop. A decade ago, we were doing it with GeoCities and LiveJournal. Except it gets tiresome seeing the same layout over and over

Earlier this year, I learned that I was shortlisted for a job alongside one other candidate. I’d submitted a portfolio, interviewed with my potential supervisor, wrote a set of sample pieces, and was (obviously) really eager to learn whether or not I’d be making the cut. Lucky for me, I had an inside source to scoop who my competition was and why we were the two left standing. What I wasn’t expecting was to discover that our strengths and weaknesses both had to do with our proficiency with language: the other candidate’s written French was much more polished than mine, but I’d demonstrated my understanding of HTML and CSS. What are the must-have Internet & social media skills for new grads?
Online resources
Just a few years ago, my job didn’t even exist. Now, some 79 per cent of corporations have jumped on the bandwagon, hiring social-media and community managers to drive their online efforts. The growth is astounding and it’s a role that’s here to stay. But what are employers looking for when hiring someone to fill this role? Hint: they’re not looking for someone who can stare at their Facebook feed all day. Adaptability and versatility Online and social media is one of the most — if not the most — fast-paced and booming industries. New technologies and tools emerge and fall everyday. Social media and community managers must be quick to adapt to new trends and understand how to apply them to a company’s advantage. More than that, they often have to be comfortable wearing different hats and juggling different skills. You must be a researcher, a communicator, a writer, an event-planner … all at the same time. Solid communications skills Well, this is a bit obvious. After all, a career in social media is ultimately a career in com-
munications. But I can’t stress enough how essential writing and verbal skills are. Social media come in different forms — blog posts, videos, Twitter, you name it … and you need to be the Jack (or Jill) of all communication trades.
Flexibility and constant connection Conversations don’t stop the minute you walk out of the office. The thing about the online world is that it operates 24/7 and conversations will happen with or without you. Your hours will be a little different from the usual nine-to-
five grind because people are always talking, tweeting, uploading videos and photos, and updating their Facebook status. Digital does not stop. Justine Abigail Yu is a communications professional by day and a freelance writer by night.

T.J. Grant has his first UFC winning streak. The 28-year-old mixed martial artist from Cole Harbour defeated Carlo Prater by unanimous decision in UFC on Fuel TV 3 in Fairfax, Va., for his first back-to-back wins since his octagon debut in 2009. “It means a lot,” Grant said. “It’s tough when you win one, lose one, but this is my career and I want to succeed — I want to fight the best. This is a step in the right direction for me and I’m thrilled to get the win tonight over a tough guy.” Grant, who is 2-0 since
moving a class from welterweight to lightweight, is now 5-3 at the UFC level and 18-5 overall. It was just his second fight in the past 17 months and his first since spraining his elbow while training for UFC 141 last December. Prater, 30, fell to 30-111 and is 1-1 after two UFC fights. Grant said he dictated a frantic pace from the start of the fight and didn’t let up. “I just kept pushing it and I was able to wear him down,” Grant said. He said he almost left without his winning paycheque because he “forgot what it was like to win.” “I really needed this win coming off a bad loss, a long layoff,” he said. MATTHEW WUEST/METRO

Rangers determined to buck recent trend Chris Kreider celebrates his goal against the New Jersey Devils Monday at Madison Square Garden in New York.
NHL. New York has yet to win Game 2 at home these playoffs
For the third straight series, the New York Rangers are basking in the glow of a 1-0 lead earned in the confines of “The World’s Most Famous Arena.” The Eastern Conference’s top-seeded team has failed in its first two attempts to double that edge at Madison Square Garden. Given a third shot against the New Jersey Devils, the Rangers are determined to make the most of home-ice advantage in Game 2 of the East finals on Wednesday night. The Rangers went winone-lose-one through all seven games against Washington. New Jersey won four straight against Philadelphia after losing the opener, to end that second-round series in five games. The Devils came back from a 3-2 deficit in the first round against Florida. A two-game lead could do wonders for the Rangers, if for no other reason than to give the team a mental break from the constant pressure. The Escape’s new “Intelligent” all-wheel-drive system is available on both turbocharged models. According to Ford, it continually assesses road conditions and driver inputs “about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye” and can shift up to 100 per cent of the available power to either the front or rear wheels for maximum grip.

In car terms, 12 years is a lifetime — or two lifetimes, even — so the arrival of a successor to one of the company’s top sellers is way overdue. Given the highly competitive small utility category with the likes of the Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5 and Kia Sportage, the Escape’s advanced mechanicals and handsome looks should keep it relevant for at least another dozen years. And with a $23,000 base price, it’s new style and technology that’s affordable.

The People for Good movement, or at least its ad campaign, has been around for a year or so now. You must have seen the ads, extolling you to do such good deeds as “Offer your seat to a stranger,” “Smile for no reason,” or (my favourite) “Give your fellow driver five fingers — wave.” I think it’s a great idea for a movement, and some of the video ads are hilarious, especially the one where a guy named Steve gives up his subway seat to a very pregnant woman. She is so thankful, she says she will name her new daughter Steve. “Or Emily,” she says finally. But I wonder how much impact it is having on the driving community. I couldn’t say I’ve noticed any appreciable uptick in driving civility over the last year. I’m still waiting for just one cabbie to let me in a lane like they routinely expect me to let them in, still waiting for three or four cars to run a yellow before I can make my left turn at a light, still waiting for the Chrysler Lebron doing 90 km/h to get out of the passing lane so I can, well, pass. But maybe it will eventually gain traction through attrition and through the
good it makes the “giver” feel, regardless of whether his or her acts are reciprocated. I know I always feel good when someone gives me a small wave to acknowledge that I let them into a lane. Letting someone into a lane is my most frequent good-deed driving act. I thought I should stretch out a bit with the goodness, so I perused the Good Ideas section of the People for Good website (peopleforgood.ca). I didn’t get through all the 1,000-plus posted suggestions, because, well, it was too depressing to read all the good things I’m not doing presently. Although I should mention I do this one: “Pick up dog poo that is not from your dog.” I do that because the poo is on my lawn. Most of the car suggestions are stuff you should already be doing, like allowing people to merge, offering rides, giving pedestrians the benefit of the doubt, etc. But there are novel ones as well, such as giving up a prime parking spot, and buying a coffee for the person behind you in the drivethrough. I also like the one about leaving a parking slip with some time left on it by the ticket machine for the next person to use. But I might be partial to it not because it’s good, but because it’s more about sticking it to the Man — another worthy cause. Some of the others are bit quirkier. “At a stoplight, spontan-
