Everest claims Toronto woman Death atop crowded mountain. ‘Traffic jam’ on trail meant climbers spent too much time at higher altitude: Official A Toronto-area woman has died pursuing her dream of scaling Mount Everest. Shriya Shah-Klorfine, a former MPP candidate in Mississauga, was among four people who died while descending from the summit Saturday in what are being described as overcrowded conditions. “My wife was someone who lived life to its fullest, with irrepressible energy and vitality,” her husband, Bruce Klorfine, said in a statement. “She died in the pursuit of her dreams, and with the satisfaction of having achieved them.”

Man only third person to survive fall over Falls A man survived a 50-metre plunge over Niagara Falls on Monday, becoming only the third person known to have gone over without a safety device and live. Police and fire crews arrived at the scene around 10:20 a.m. after witnesses reported seeing a man climb over the retaining wall and deliberately jump into the river waters. The man, believed to be in his 40s, went over the
Horseshoe Falls and surfaced in the lower Niagara River basin adjacent to the Journey Behind the Falls observation platform, Niagara Parks Commission Police said in a release. The man was swimming around when rescue crews located him and brought him to safety at about 12:16 p.m., as a crowd of Victoria Day tourists watched in shock. Police said the man sus-
tained life-threatening injuries. He was transported by an ORNGE air ambulance to a Hamilton-area hospital. The surrounding area was closed after the incident. The last person to go over the Falls and survive was a 30-year-old Canadian man in March 2009. In October 2003, a man from Michigan also survived. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Police officer mourned after motorcycle crash Peel Regional Police. Officer was taken off life support after fighting for her life over the weekend A Peel Region police officer died Monday morning after a long weekend spent fighting for her life. Const. Ewa Domagalska was in a head-on motorcycle collision on Saturday in Orangeville. Domagalska, 30, was on life support following the accident and was taken off shortly before her death. She was surrounded by friends and family. Just before 5 p.m. Saturday, Domagalska was driving a motorcycle south on a rural stretch of Airport Road, north of Highway 9, when she collided with a northbound SUV. At the time, police said the offduty officer had sustained lifethreatening injuries. No charges were laid against the SUV’s driver. Domagalska “will be missed by her family, friends, co-workers and community,” the Peel police force posted on Twitter

Metro retraction
Retraction and apology to Conrad Black In the May 7, 2012 edition of Metro and on metronews.ca, we published an article entitled, “Following the mogul script”. That article incorrectly reported on the nature of Conrad Black’s convictions. In fact, the only convictions upheld against Mr. Black were one count of obstruction of justice and one count of mail fraud. Moreover, we retract any allegation that Mr. Black created “flimsy businesses based on fraud.” We apologize to Mr. Black for these misstatements.

Pearson. LINK shuts next year for construction of air-rail link from Union For thousands of workers at Pearson airport, the LINK is a short but vital link in their daily commute. Toronto’s only cable-propelled transit, the Pearson’s Automated People Mover (APM) carries about 17,000 riders daily, 60 to 70 per cent of them airport workers, the remainder Pearson travellers changing terminals or taking advantage of lower-priced parking a few minutes away by train. Ridership has more than doubled since the $100 million LINK opened in 2006, says Iouri Moutine, GTAA superintendent of People Moving Devices Facilities. That growth has increased significantly since Pearson added its Value parking garage in late 2010. A seventh car will be added to the two LINK trains when they go back into service after a seven- to eight-month closure next year. In March, LINK riders will be consigned to buses during about six months of construction for the Union Station to Pearson express train which is expected to open by 2015 — and is likely to further boost
LINK ridership. The train will arrive at Terminal 1 on a rail spur that runs right down the middle of the two LINK guideways. After the six-month construction period, it will take another month or two to recommission the LINK before it can go back into service. That pause will be the first major shutdown of the system since 2009, when it closed for three months to repair a problem with premature wear of the bogies, which form the frame underneath the train. It’s an issue that had previously detracted from the APM’s reliability, according to Moutine. Propelled on a continuous loop of 36mm hydraulic cable, the LINK system is actually two driverless trains that operate side by side on an elevated guideway, shuttling back and forth on a 1.5km, three-stop route in about four minutes. The guideway is 30 metres above the ground at its highest point, providing a panoramic view of the airport as it climbs out of the Viscount Rd. terminus toward Terminal 3. Torstar news service

They have also gone to Filipino community groups as far away as California for financial support. Over the past two years, Toronto’s Balmoral Funeral Home has hosted services for at least five Filipino migrant workers who died of sudden illness or accident and needed repatriation to their families in the Philippines. “Often their distant relatives or friends would take charge of the funeral and go to the community with the financial matter,” said Balmoral’s manager, John Arienda-Jose, who is also of Filipino descent. City welcomes royal couple Charles and Camilla. Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall arrive in Toronto as part of Diamond Jubilee tour Prince Charles and his wife Camilla have kicked off the Ontario leg of their Canadian tour. The royal couple landed at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport Monday after leaving New Brunswick, where they spent the first full day of their visit to Canada for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. They were greeted on the tarmac by Premier Dalton McGuinty, Lt.-Gov. David C. Onley and other dignitaries. The Duchess of Cornwall received flowers from a little girl, nine-year-old Morgan Marie Fremlin. The royal couple began their Canadian tour in New Brunswick, where Prince Charles recalled his time training as a military pilot, extolled the virtues of service and, in a scene reminiscent of his son’s visit last year, played a pickup game of street hockey. But unlike Prince William, Charles scored.
It was an unconventional start for the couple’s whirlwind visit — Charles’s 16th to Canada — which began in earnest at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, where he flew as a naval helicopter pilot in the 1970s “at an exercise area in the middle of nowhere,” drawing a smattering of laughter from a crowd of about 800. He also praised those who devote their time serving their communities — a prominent theme of the couple’s visit as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year. “The roll call extends from remarkable schoolteachers who, against all the odds, are giving their students the best possible start in life, to senior businessmen and women who are working creatively to share their practical skills and experience with communities who need a bit of help,” Charles said. The royal couple will depart Toronto on Tuesday evening for Regina. The next day, Charles will have a private audience with Prime Minister Stephen Harper and be treated to a concert by the Regina Symphony Orchestra before the tour concludes. the canadian press

‘Reset’ housing policies: Report Almost 8,000 new affordable homes and 13,000 new construction jobs could be created in Toronto in the next three years if governments unleash the power of the private sector, says a new city report to be discussed next week. The report, by the city’s Private Sector Housing Roundtable, calls on Toronto to “reset” city housing policies and encourages the federal and provincial governments to offer tax incentives and low-interest loans to developers who build affordable homes.
If approved by city council this summer, the report could kick-start the largest affordable housing construction boom in the city in 20 years, said Sean Gadon, director of the city’s affordable housing office. So far, Toronto’s red-hot residential construction market has been dominated by condominiums that low- and middle-income earners can’t afford while some 80,000 households languish on affordable housing waiting lists. “We are ready to help tackle the affordable housing chal-
lenges in the ownership, new rental and existing private rental markets,” says the report. “Given the current construction and renovation boom there is no better time to act.” The roundtable, set up a year ago by Councillor Ana Bailao after she became chair of the city’s affordable housing committee, is made up of representatives of the development industry, building trades, private landlords, the board of trade and the United Way.
Recommendations
Among the report’s 12 broad recommendations are changes to the city’s plan that would allow developers to increase height or density of their buildings. • Other changes would

State of emergency. Kirkland Lake fire leaves 300 people stranded About 300 people remain out of homes and cottages near Kirkland Lake in northeastern Ontario, which has declared a state of emergency as crews battle a nearby forest fire. People were told to leave residential and cottage areas at Goodfish and Nettie Lake, about 600 kilometres north of Toronto, for safety reasons on Sunday. Natural Resources officials say the fire broke out Sun-
day morning and by Monday had consumed more than 20 square kilometres of forest. Crews from the town and Natural Resources aided by water bombers have been battling the blaze. Thick black smoke could be seen for a distance over the surrounding area as warm winds from the south and 30 C temperatures made fighting the fire treacherous. the canadian press

Birth-control battle leads to lawsuits
Catholic counterattack. Religious institutions sue Obama administration over required health-plan coverage
Dozens of Roman Catholic dioceses, schools and other institutions sued the Obama administration Monday over a government mandate requiring most employers to provide birth control coverage as part of their employee health plans. The lawsuits filed in federal courts around the U.S. represent the largest push against the mandate since President Barack Obama announced the policy in January. Among those suing are the University of Notre Dame, the Archdioceses of Washington and New York, the Michigan Catholic Conference and the Catholic University of America. “We have tried negotiation with the administration and legislation with the Congress, and we’ll keep at it, but there’s still no fix,” said New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “Time is running out.” The U.S. Health and Human Services Department adopted the rule to improve health care for women. However, faith leaders from across religious traditions protested, saying the mandate violates religious freedom. The original rule includes a religious exemption that allows houses of worship to opt out of the mandate, but keeps the requirement in place for religiously affiliated charities. Health and Human Services spokeswoman Erin Shields said Monday the department does not comment on pending litigation. Notre Dame’s president, the Rev. John Jenkins, said in a statement that the school decided to sue “after much deliberation, discussion and efforts to find a solution acceptable to the various parties.” The university argued the mandate violates religious freedom by requiring many religiously affiliated hospitals, schools and charities to comply. “We do not seek to impose our religious beliefs on others,” Jenkins said. “We simply ask that the government not impose its values on the university when those values conflict with our religious teachings.”

No Canadian boots on Afghan soil after 2014, Harper says Afghanistan. ‘If you asked me frankly, would I wish it was earlier? I would say yes,’ said Harper at NATO summit Canada’s military involvement in Afghanistan will come to a firm end in March 2014, the prime minister said Monday at the close of the NATO summit. Though Canada will continue to financially support the Afghan army, there will be no boots on the ground once the NATO-led mission there comes to a close, Stephen Harper said. “The time has come,” Harper said. “All the benchmarks, all the milestones are being met to make this possible.” The announcement came as NATO and its partner nations formally agreed that Afghan security forces would take control of any combat next summer with NATO sliding into a support role until 2014. They expressed confidence in the ability of Afghan secur-

Dial-up Internet still reality for many Online access. Thousands of Canadians rely on dial-up connections, mainly in rural areas
The next time you get frustrated because a website refuses to load instantly, or a streaming video has to buffer for a few seconds, think of the surprisingly large number of Canadians Low-cost access
still on dial-up. According to a few different estimates, there are hundreds of thousands of Canadians still travelling the information superhighway in the slow lane, who only get online after waiting for a series of bleeps, piercing shrieks and blurts of static to be belted out by their dial-up modem. “It’s pretty dramatic,” says Ross Kouhi, executive director for the National Capital FreeNet,

a donation-driven service that provides free or inexpensive dial-up access to about 3,600 users in the Ottawa area. “As you’re demonstrating it to somebody
it’s always a little surprising to see just how slow things load.” The CRTC estimated that in 2010, there were about 366,000 dial-up customers across the country. In rural communities, dialup is the only way to get online. In 2010, the CRTC estimated that five per cent of the population had no access to high-speed Internet, with that rate nearing 16 per cent in rural areas. the canadian press

Brazil’s president says the nation has nearly doubled its high-speed Internet connections in the past year. She says six million families have signed up for low-cost high-speed Internet access through the government’s four-year, $6 billion National Broadband Plan. the associated press
Ten months after an undersea fiber-optic cable was supposed to have improved Cuba’s lagging online system, the Internet access in the country remains the slowest in the hemisphere. Ottawa resisted shaming Russia in spy scandal
/ElmwoodSpa
The Harper government had a host of military and possibly commercial reasons for not blaming and shaming Russia in the aftermath of an embarrassing spy scandal involving a junior intelligence officer, a series of internal briefings suggest. The case of Sub-Lt. Jeffery Delisle, which exploded across the front pages in January, has largely disappeared into a black hole of secrecy and court-ordered silence that even a Wall Street Journal story failed to dislodge last spring. The New York-based publication recently quoted U.S. intelligence sources saying
Sub.-Lt. Jeffery Paul Delisle the canadian press file
Delisle’s breach in communications secrets was roughly as big in volume as the notorious U.S. data loss to WikiLeaks. Yet, the Harper government has remained mute, even in the face of suggestions the case caused a major rift with Washington. Several sources within the
government and the military say there was a vigorous debate within the halls of power about whether to call out the former Cold War adversary over Delisle, whose case has been adjourned until June 13 while his lawyer awaits security-washed documents. A small cadre of cabinet ministers, notably Defence Minister Peter MacKay, argued for a measured, nuanced response to the crisis, which continues to have the potential to cause serious strains among allies, said the sources. The Conservatives have previously shown no hesitation to paint Moscow as a bogey man, especially when it comes to justifying their military buildup in the Arctic. The rivalry over Arctic boundaries is being driven by the suggestion of mineral wealth under the melting polar sea. the canadian press

Facebook stock sinks below IPO Social network. Website losses amount to nearly $10 billion of its market value Facebook’s stock is tumbling well below its $38 US IPO price in the social network’s second day of trading as a public company on Monday. By late afternoon, Facebook’s stock was at $34.26, down 10.4 per cent from Fri-
day’s closing price of $38.23. The company lost nearly $10 billion of its market value, and is now worth around $96 billion, about $2 billion below Amazon.com Inc. “There must have been some sober second thoughts about this,” said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research Group who was first to come out with a “Sell” rating on Facebook’s stock on Friday. It’s not that he thinks the world’s largest online social network is a bad investment.
But at $38 per share, it’s just too expensive considering the risks associated with Facebook’s brief history and unproven advertising model, he says. His fair price, or “target price,” is $30. Initial public offerings are a delicate game of supply and demand. The investment banks orchestrating the transaction, the deal’s underwriters and work with the company to decide how much stock to sell and at what price.

Facebook’s market debut Friday suffered some hiccups. • Trading on the Nasdaq
was delayed for a half hour due to issues with traders’ orders.
• Facebook’s stock opened
at $42.05 and fluctuated between $45 and $38 before closing at $38.23.

GO Transit passengers have three months until its trains are off the tracks. A spokeswoman from the Premier’s Office said yesterday that’s the time frame needed so people can transition to enhanced bus service or larger carpooling parking lots. Ontario has chosen to take a new approach to regional transportation in southern Ontario by winding down the GO Transit Commission. The Provincial Crown Agency, Ontario Northland provides this same service in Northern Ontario as does Metrolinx in Southern Ontario. In Northern Ontario many residents rely on our Rail and Motor Coach passenger services to commute to work, school, medical appointments and for much of the same reasons you use GO Transit services. Canadian banks. Profits to grow in second quarter
Labour Party MP testifies at media ethics inquiry
After starting the year with strong earnings momentum, Canada’s biggest banks will likely report slower growth in the second quarter when they begin rolling out results this week. The big question will be which banks come out on top in a quarter that’s expected to be characterized by lower trading revenues and a weaker outlook for the rest of the year. “I wouldn’t say there’s going to be one bank that clearly leaves the rest in the dust,” said Gareth Watson, vice-president of investment management at GMP Richardson Ltd. One factor will be which banks have stronger capital market activity and trading revenues, he added. “You can’t necessarily gauge what those results are going to be, without knowing the exact port-

U.K.’s proposed surveillance program could expose private lives: Experts British officials have given their word: “We won’t read your emails.” But experts say the government’s proposed new surveillance program will gather so much data that spooks won’t have to read your messages to guess what you’re up to. The U.K. Home Office stresses it won’t be reading the content of every Britons’ communications, saying the data it seeks “is not the content of any communication.” It is, however, looking for information
about who’s sending the message and to whom, where it’s sent from and other details, including a message’s length and its format. The proposal, unveiled last week as part of the government’s annual legislative program, is just a draft bill, so it could be modified or scrapped. But if passed in its current form, it would put a huge amount of personal data at the government’s disposal, which it could use to deduce a startling amount about Britons’ private
lives — from sleep patterns to driving habits or even infidelity. “We’re entering a whole new phase of analysis based on the data that we can collect,” said Gerald Kane, an information systems expert at Boston College. The ocean of information is hard to fathom. Britons generate four billion hours of voice calls and 130 billion text messages annually, according to industry figures. In 2008, the BBC put the annual number of U.K.-linked emails at around one trillion. the associated press

So even without opening emails, how much can British spooks learn about who’s sending them? • The ebb and flow of electronic communication, that call to your mother just before bed, that morning email to your boss saying you’ll be late, frames our waking lives.

Downloads. U.S. court won’t reduce filesharing fine The U.S. Supreme Court won’t reduce the $675,000 verdict against a Boston University student who illegally downloaded 30 songs and shared them on the Internet. The high court on Monday refused to hear an appeal from Joel Tenenbaum, of Providence, R.I., who was successfully sued by the Recording Industry Association of America for illegally sharing music on peer-to-peer networks. In 2009, a jury ordered Tenenbaum to pay $675,000 US, or $22,500 for each song he illegally downloaded and shared. A federal judge called that unconstitutionally excessive, but the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated the penalty at the request of Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Brothers Records. and other record labels represented by the RIAA. Chinese firm buys AMC in big-screen deal Gerry Lopez, CEO of AMC Entertainment Holdings, left, shakes hands with Zhang Lin, vice-president of Dalian Wanda Group Co., during a signing ceremony for Wanda to acquire AMC in Beijing, China, on Monday. The Chinese conglomerate announced Monday it will buy major U.S. cinema chain AMC for $2.6 billion US to create the world’s biggest movie-theater operator. AMC operates 346 cinemas, mostly in the United States and Canada, and says it has 23 of the 50 highest-grossing U.S. outlets. Wanda’s purchase reflects the global ambitions of a wave of cash-rich Chinese companies that are using acquisitions to speed their expansion by obtaining foreign skills and brand names. In terms of all Chinese corporate investments in the U.S., the deal is the third largest, according to financial research firm Dealogic. It ranks behind investments by Beijing’s sovereign wealth fund, China Investment Corp., of $5 billion for a minority stake in Morgan Stanley and $3 billion in Blackstone Group LP, both in 2007. available immediately: one desperate cottage guest With the Victoria Day long weekend behind us, the summer season has officially begun. Jessica Napier City dwellers delight in the metronews.ca/shesays mass exodus that takes place each sun-filled weekend as urbanites pack up their coolers and head out of town. As a national pastime, cottaging (a uniquely Canadian verb) is on par with wearing plaid shirts and truly believing that this is the year that our team will bring home the Stanley Cup. I was never one of those fortunate people whose parents invested in a piece of summer property — yes, I know #firstworldproblem. Consequently, I’ve had to make some strategic moves to expand my social circle so that I might have a chance to experience the great outdoors while still enjoying the luxuries of indoor plumbing. A few years ago, I was unreasonably disappointed when my good friend broke up with her long-time boyfriend whose family owned 3,000 square-feet of lakefront paradise and not one, but two boats. Sure they were never meant to last, but couldn’t she have waited until after Thanksgiving? He had a water trampoline for crying out loud. Over time, as friends have moved on and moved away, Cottage, anyone? I’ve found the number of annual cottage invites dwindling. I have spent years acquiring Canadiana-inspired outfits to wear for all sorts of cabin-in-the-woods-themed weekends. My wardrobe is starting to look like a Hudson’s Bay Co. catalogue. I’ll happily spend the afternoon running to and from the beer fridge to ensure that all cottage-goers are staying properly hydrated. And when the rain clouds roll in, I have you covered with a seriously large collection of board games. Twister, Scattegories, Taboo, Scrabble … boredom is not an option when I come to visit. Finally, I deserve a getaway. A family of skunks — yes, skunks — recently took up residence underneath the house I live in. And since I’m in a basement apartment, this essentially means I have Pepe Le Pew and friends living in the wall behind my couch. So if you’ve got a deck chair to spare this summer, I could use a weekend escape.

The eclipse followed a narrow 14,000-kilometre path for 3 1/2 hours. The ring phenomenon lasted about five minutes, depending on the location. People outside the narrow band for prime viewing saw a partial eclipse.
Hikers watch an annular eclipse from Papago Park in Phoenix on Sunday. The annular eclipse, in which the moon passes in front of the sun leaving only a golden ring around its edges, was visible to wide areas across China, Japan and elsewhere in the region before moving across the Pacific to be seen in parts of the western United States late Sunday afternoon. the associated press
In Japan
Even lemurs react to marvellous sight A Japanese zoo said the eclipse made lemurs believe it was evening. Some 20 lemurs at the Japan Monkey Center in central Japan skipped breakfast, climbed up and jumped between trees and poles, a typical evening behaviour, according to the zoo. They returned to normal after the eclipse. “They must be reacting to the eclipse,” zoo director Akira Kato told public broadcaster NHK.
Enjoy responsibly • ‘Ring of fire’ eclipses are not as dramatic as a total eclipse, when the disc of the sun is entirely blocked by the moon. The moon is too far from Earth and appears too small in the sky to blot out the sun completely. • Doctors and education officials have warned of eye injuries from improper viewing. Before the event started, Japan’s education minister demonstrated how to use eclipse glasses in a televised news conference.

The Woman in Black Director. James Watkins
••••• The Woman in Black is a haunted-house shocker set in the late 19th century in a remote Yorkshire village where the frights are foremost, and the acting of its star, Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe, is almost beside the point. You could hardly find a more scream-tested story. Based on Susan Hill’s 1983 novel about a phantom woman killing children to avenge the loss of her son, the tale has also been told on stage, radio and in a TV movie. Radcliffe, playing London solicitor Arthur Kipps, must travel to Eel Marsh House, a dwelling so remote it is accessible by horse-drawn cart — and then only when the tide is out. Of course he must stay several nights at the eerie place, ignoring the ghost stories he’s heard. Turns out he heard right: at Eel Marsh, Kipps doesn’t just see dead people, he’s practically stampeded by them, especially in the film’s later reels, when The Woman in Black ends up a multi-generational horror show. Extras include a commentary with Watkins and Jane Goldman and two making-of featurettes. PETER HOWELL
The Grey Director. Joe Carnahan Stars. Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo
••••• As the security chief of a remote Alaskan oil-drilling complex, the job of Ottway (Liam Neeson) is to hunt and kill the rapacious wolves threatening workers. The Grey’s plot starts when Ottway and his team must fly to Anchorage and disaster intervenes. After one of the most realistic — and frightening — air crashes ever committed to film, Ottway jolts out of a snowbank to find himself surrounded by bits of burning jet and a handful of fellow survivors. They’ve fallen into the domain of the grey wolf. The Grey ends with a thought open to interpretation. Stick around for the credit rolls. PETER HOWELL

Josh Brolin plays a young Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black 3.
HANDOUT
Hey Brolin, what’s a flux capacitor? Pop quiz. Metro puts Men in Black 3 star Josh Brolin to the test, quizzing him on his knowledge of time travel — Hollywood style NED EHRBAR
Metro World News in Hollywood
Josh Brolin knew he was taking on a challenge when he signed on to play a younger version of Tommy Lee Jones in the time-travel-themed Men in Black 3. But how ready was he for the challenge of Metro’s Time Travel Pop Quiz? Read on to find out. First of all, how many gigawatts are required to energize the flux capacitor? Um... 360,000? Nope, 1.21. I’m glad I got that so wrong (laughs). While time-traveling, can you interact with your past or future self, or would that cause a catastrophic event? It would cause a catastrophic event. But Boris the Animal
does (in Men in Black 3). I just know that time travel as is understood by Hollywood and their storytelling has been if you in any way affect the past that you go into, that it always has a negative effect on the future. That’s what I’ve been told, at least. Speaking of, say you travel back in time and you arrive standing alone in front of a young Adolf Hitler. What do you do? Befriend. That’d be the best way to get in there, and then you can detour him. Befriend and detour. What kind of adventure did Bill and Ted have? An excellent one. When I met Keanu Reeves, that was the first thing I said. I was like, “Bill and Ted, right on dude!” I did SNL recently and we did The Californians, and I think that was what I did, some version of guys I grew up with and Keanu Reeves in that movie. It’s funny because they came up to me during rehearsal and were like, “We’d like you to do more of a California voice.” And I said, “Dude, honestly, being from California I’m doing the only voice that’s California. Everybody else is doing the funny
version. I think I’m just doing the accurate version. In Terminator, is Arnold Schwarzenegger a cyborg, an alien or a wacky twin? A cyborg, of course. But a different type of cyborg is Robert Patrick in number two, right? What’s it called? The T-1000. The T-1000. Very good, man. You know your stuff. OK, you can only make one time-travel trip. Would you rather go forward or backward? Wow. That’s a great question. And I only have one choice. Forward, for sure. Selfishly, I’d like to backwards because there’s a lot of people that I would love to meet, you know? A lot of writers, obviously a lot of very important people from your Jesuses to your Mahatma Gandhis to the obvious. But if you go forward you can see what actually is the consequence of what we’re doing now, come back and actually have proof that will happen if we don’t change. But then everyone will think you’re crazy, of course. And then you have to deal with that, but I already have to deal with that anyway, so that’s really par for
the course for me (laughs). Which movie, in your opinion, gets time travel the most right? God, man. Time Bandits by Terry Gilliam was probably my favorite time travel movie that I’ve seen, just because it was so fantastical, and Terry Gilliam is such a brilliant director. Like Brazil and Fear and Loathing, the lenses that he uses are so warped and all that. It’s brilliant. I like that movie a lot. A lot of people say Back to the Future. To me, Time Bandits was a different level of it. Back to the Future is fun and kind of like, (in a Valley Girl voice) “Oh my god, it’s so much fun! He’s skateboarding and it’s a rocket! Oh my god!” (laughs) I haven’t seen Time Bandits in a while, I need to watch it again. I’ll give you a chance to redeem yourself on the gigawatts question if you can tell me how fast the DeLoreon in Back to the Future has to go to travel through time. Oh God, I know this. Sixtyfive? Eighty-eight. F–! I wouldn’t get very far.
The Avengers continues to muscle out everything else Hollywood throws at it, easily sinking naval rival Battleship and other new releases. With $55.1 million domestically, Disney’s superhero sensation remained No. 1 for a third-straight weekend and took in more than the three big newcomers combined. Overseas, The Avengers added an additional $56 million. The film is approaching the $1.2 billion mark worldwide, totalling $457.1 million domestically and $723.3 million internationally. “The Avengers is dominating the marketplace so profoundly that the newcomers are having a tough time breaking in now,” said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for boxoffice tracker Hollywood. com. Universal’s Battleship opened a distant No. 2 with $25.4 million domestically, well below industry expectations. But the board-game adaptation starring Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch and Rihanna already has grossed $226.8 million overseas since launching in April, giving it a worldwide total of $252.1 million. Sacha Baron Cohen’s comedy The Dictator, in which he plays a tyrannical third-world leader, debuted in thirdplace with $17.4 million for the weekend. Since opening Wednesday, the Paramount release has taken in $24.5 million. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Riding towards maturity on a New York bus The We and the I. Filmmaker Michel Gondry captures the hopes, fears and relationships of teens filming on a Bronx bus Jennifer Lesieur
Metro World News in Cannes
Not all teenagers are ‘young and dumb.’ Although you’ll be fooled into thinking this is the case at the beginning of The We and the I. The film begins as Michael, Teresa, Laidychen, Big T and the gang trade high school in the
Bronx for holidays and parties. Kicking and screaming, they pile up inside the bus, kick the small kids off the back seats, mistreat an old lady and shout insults (and throw the odd slap) at each other. Throughout the entire journey, the audience witnesses the emotional — but easy flowing — evolution of the relationship between the teenagers. And there’s a reason for this: they played themselves. The story line came to Michel Gondry as he was sat on the number 80 bus in Paris. “It was the end of the day and I watched as these kids came out of class. It was such chaos, there were so many of them. As I saw them coming

out one after the other, I started imaging the ties between them and how they evolved.” It was when Gondry came across an extra curricular activity program called The Point offering lessons in “acting, photography and … activism” that he decided to organize a workshop to find his cast. He hired the first 40 that signed up and
kept their original names. “As I started to get to know the kids, I let their stories merge into the one I wanted to tell. The characters slowly grew from there.” The We and the I addresses your typical teenager, moody and tormented: we sit through their stupid jokes, put up with obsessions with sex and figure out the hidden worries. “My job gives me a good excuse to hang on to my teens. I did feel guilty about the fact that whilst I could act like a kid, I knew I was just playing around,” confesses Gondry. “It’s this feeling of guilt that forced me to tackle more serious, social problems some of these kids are faced with.”

Actors ‘for real’. Teen stars of Moonrise Kingdom talk about landing the parts Teenagers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward play young lovers Sam and Suzy in Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. As for the rest of the cast, it’s one big name after another: Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton and Edward Norton... “This is my first film,” says Hayward. “My tennis teacher told me to go to the open audition and so I went just for fun. At no point did I imagine it would all get so serious!” Gilman was already enrolled in acting classes when he met Wes Anderson. “One day my mother came to pick me up from school, something she never does. I thought something bad had happened,” he remembers. “But when she told me I had
the part, I screamed, cried and laughed. It was one of the happiest moments of my life.” Although set in the 1960s, Hayward and Gilman had no trouble relating to their characters. “The film is about two besotted teenagers. They don’t care about the consequences of their actions, however reckless. And what we learn from it all is that love really does conquer all,” concludes Gilman. So what about that kiss between Sam and Suzy…? “There weren’t that many people on set that day and Wes had more or less choreographed each and single one of our moves. That’s when it hit me that we were actors, for real,” says Hayward. Jérôme Vermelin, MWN

Is Xavier Dolan annoying? The gifted Quebecois certainly doesn’t have a good reputation within the film industry. Especially since he made sure everyone knew how unhappy he was to find out his third film Laurence Anyways‚ isn’t in competition at Cannes, but is “only” in another category. Festival director Thierry Frémeaux explained that being only 23 years of age, Dolan still had plenty of time ahead of him to make an impact on the audience at Cannes. But Dolan wants it all, now. It’s for this very reason that he is where he is now. Laurence Anyways is an incredibly emotional film. “I wanted to talk about things that inspire and obsess me: outcasts, likely morality and unlikely love,” he admits. Laurence, (played by Melvil Poupaud) is a young teacher.
Xavier Dolan the canadian press
His partner, Fred, wants to have a sex change without changing her life. And so it all begins... “The film takes place over 10 years. You can’t tell the entire story in one hour and a half,” explains, Dolan, “unless you’re OK with making a bad film, you need to take your time.” Jennifer Lesieur, MWN

Faking it till he makes it — Robb Stark learns to be king Game of Thrones. Richard Madden’s character gives viewers hope as he takes on the role of King in the North Amber Ray
Metro World News in New York
In two seasons of Game of Thrones, young Robb Stark has grown from dutiful teenage son to upstart King in the North. It was an accelerated maturation, to say the least, one thrust on him when the On romance...
Robb Stark meets a woman this season who questions him — why are you fighting? Why do you want to be king? • He’s spent so much time being a king and leading an army, and then he meets this woman who is a real breath of fresh air and calls him out — she doesn’t curtsy to him, she calls him out. He’s a boy, she kind of sees him as a man, she asks, “What are you doing? Why is this happening?” She makes him question himself. He’s never been asked these questions before — no one ever says to him, “why are you doing this, actually? Are you doing the right thing?” And then he works it out and says, “Yes I am, actually.”

sions himself. What excites me the most about him this year is everything that happens to him is a ‘first time’. And I think in everyone’s lives those are exciting mo-
How is Robb adjusting to the title of King in the North? He’s learning by doing. A lot of the time, in front of his men, you see him posturing. Robb is acting. He’s been very clever and made some great decisions and earned the respect of the people who follow him, but a lot of the time he is pretending to be king. It doesn’t feel real to him. It doesn’t feel where he’s supposed to be, but he is. And he needs to take on that role. By having to pretend to be a man, he becomes a man. What have you learned about Robb this year that you didn’t know last season? I learned a lot about how he follows his heart. Last season he was kind of pushed into situations and making decisions based on what his father would do — that’s what drove me as an actor last year, I kept thinking, ‘What would Ned do?’ Then into Season 2, he’s making these deci-
ments, those first times. I learned how he deals with situations. And I’ve learned that Robb is one of the most honest, genuine characters. Everything he does is for the greater good. But just like every other character in the show, sometimes your own desires get in the way, and you can become selfish, or you can take liberties because you end up getting too much power — espec i a l l y

for Robb, who is quite young. But I don’t think there’s an arrogance to Robb yet. Sometimes bits of that filter in, and sometimes he needs to act arrogant to keep the respect. He’s gained that, and I like that about him. Everything he does he’s worked for, and he’s honest, and he gets what he wants through his actions rather than some of the other characters who can talk their way into situations — or out of situations. The battle against King Joffrey, who had Robb’s father beheaded, is a dark and violent journey. But every time a Stark comes on screen, there’s this flicker of hope. ... That things can work out, that things could be perfect.
Do you get that feeling reading the scripts? There’s bits of me as an actor that go, ‘What would this be like if Robb were king?’ That would present its own challenges, but things could be really good. I think Robb would be such a great king. But you know, on the same hand, that’s not where his heart lies. He was raised to be Lord of Winterfell and that’s where he wants to be — he wants to be looking after his people in the north. He’s fighting for the cause even though he doesn’t want to be king. He wants the world to be a better place; he wants the world to be just and fair and right, and that’s what I love so much about him. That drives him to carry on this path of being king and fighting this war; that comes from him wanting the right things to happen.

I Suck at Girls. Hilarious and heartbreaking memoir about Justin Halpern’s romantic screw-ups Justin Halpern has become an international phenomenon thanks to the curse-laden advice of his father. Unemployed and living with his parents in his late 20s, Halpern began the now legendary Twitter account S-- My Dad Says, which turned into a book, which turned into a TV show (since been cancelled). But Halpern is bouncing back with an alternately hilari-

ous and heartbreaking memoir of all of the times he screwed up in romantic relationships, fittingly titled I Suck at Girls. We asked him to recount some of those cringe-worthy moments. This book deals with some of the most embarrassing moments you’ve had in dating. Which one was the most traumatic for you?
I think -— probably as silly as this sounds — after I lost my virginity. I thought it was going to be this seminal point in my life where I was going to become a man, and it just ended so anticlimactically. I was 20 years old and I wanted to have a relationship that was really cool — the
kind you see on TV. I feel like there’s a lot of different media out there that talks about ‘with each relationship you learn something and you move on,’ and all this kind of stuff. I look at love as this kind of series of really humiliating experiences that end in pain and then hopefully at the end, you have one victory. Given that your dad was largely responsible for your first success, did you hesitate to include him in the stories, as you did here?
He’s such a big part of my life that if he was prominent in the story, then I was going to put him in it. And he also is much more adept at framing things in a way that I never could.
Approval:
He has this very unique and interesting way of dishing out advice, even if he hates it when I call it that. What’s next for you?
We’ve sold this book as a show — we wanted to do a Wonder Years-type thing set in the early ’90s that was a little bit more focused on these 13 and 14-year-old kids learning about women. The early ’90s were the last innocent moments this country really had. You can just Google and find porn anywhere now, but back in the day, there was still mystery left, even speaking about women anatomically. I didn’t know how they worked. Metro new york

Alan Doyle grins over Great Big Seachange Music. Band’s frontman branches out with his first solo album Alan Doyle remembers with uncommon clarity the first time he held a Great Big Sea album in his hands. It was Aug. 2, 1993, and he was standing outside his rental house on Suez Street in St. John’s, N.L. The Doyle family of musicians was, in his words, “legendary” in his hometown of Petty Harbour, but they tended to perform at weddings, parties and dances. They didn’t have their own albums, and Doyle assumed it would never be his fate as well. “I thought that only happened to people from the mainland,” Doyle, 43, recalled. “It was the coolest day of my life.” It’s roughly 19 years later and Great Big Sea has issued

11 albums since its blue-hued debut, so Doyle has rarely felt that same indescribable kick he had that day. That was, until last week, when Doyle’s solo debut, Boy on Bridge, hit stores. When asked how he felt finally seeing his given name splashed across a record cover, the personable Doyle slid his iPhone from his pocket and proudly showed off a photo taken the first time he held the album in his hands. In it, he wears a goofy grin as wide as the Rock itself. “Look at that — I got my own record,” he marvels, sipping a coffee on a sunny Toronto patio. “I realize I should be above it. But I can’t help it. “It thrills me to the bone, still.”

That was, in effect, the motivation behind Doyle’s decision to issue his first solo record — the music-industry vet doesn’t get the opportunity to do anything for the first time that often anymore. “In many ways, this record is about firsts — it’s about doing stuff that I’ve never done before,” Doyle said. “I really wanted to go live in other people’s music worlds. Let’s go do it some-
one else’s way for a change.” And change was exactly what Doyle was after, recording the restlessly eclectic Boy on Bridge in a diverse range of locations. He recorded at some traditional locales including the L.A. studio of Mike Post — the multiple Grammy and Emmy winner who composed the themes to Law & Order, The Rockford Files, L.A. Law and Hill Street Blues — as well as with Gordie Sampson in Nashville. Doyle, who would seem to have as many connections as a discount intercontinental flight, also collaborated on the album with actor Russell Crowe, Blue Rodeo front man Jim Cuddy and Regina guitarist Colin James. the canadian press

This comes after rumours that when visiting the set of girlfriend Selena Gomez’s new movie, Spring Breakers, he fell for her nearly identical costar, Vanessa Hudgens (better known in this column as Zac Efron’s unworthy ex). For her part, Gomez closed her Instagram account, then took to Facebook with a photo of herself at a shooting range with the ominous caption, “Released some stress today.” Twitter, Instagram, Facebook: are you following this? By not shopping around for car insurance, you could be paying hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars more than you should. Insurers use their own claims experience to determine their rates and each company will have a different history with
each driving profile and car combination. This could mean that you are overpaying for car insurance – and with so many insurance companies, odds are you may not be currently insured with the company that offers the best rate for your driving profile. The car you drive, where you live, where you drive, and your driving record are all factors that may affect your insurance rate. A long journey can leave you feeling disorientated, stiff and groggy. You feel so rubbish you wonder why you bothered leaving in the first place. Stop whining and get moving. Yoga can be done anywhere, any time, so rather than suppress a yawn, do this simple sequence in your hotel room to boost your energy levels and restore core strength. The poses will get your blood circulation going and help open up tight hips, backs, necks and shoulders, all of which get cramped when travelling, says yoga instructor Kristin McGee, who trains comedienne Tina Fey.

What to do when someone ‘shows you the money’ Financial windfall. It’s not a dilemma we often have but sometimes a pile of cash comes your way. So what should you do with it? Your money
Alison Griffiths money@metronews.ca Twitter: @alisononmoney
“A divorce,” once noted Margaret Atwood, “is like an amputation: you survive it, but there’s less of you.” This usually means financially too. But a friend of a colleague here at Metro, is exiting her marriage with a slightly fatter wallet, $20,000 to be exact. And now she’s wondering what to do with it. Confession. After my own divorce eons ago I bought Statistic

Financial windfalls are rare. Treasure them and be slow to make spending decisions. a red telephone and a sexy green Karmann Ghia. However, with the wisdom of time at my disposal, I’d suggest something different. First of all, take a breath; park the $20,000 in a short term GIC or high interest savings account for at least a couple of months until the emotional dust settles a bit. Second, after a windfall of any kind, ask the question, “Who are you?” Spending, saving and investing is entirely dependent on your personality and situation. A young, safely employed, debt-less divorcee with no kids could justify a fab trip, a killer new wardrobe or cool wheels. On the other hand, debt, dependents and dreams might steer you in a different path. Let’s say you have sizeable RRSP (registered retirement savings plan) contribution room. Deploying most of the
funds to retirement savings might yield a nice refund next year, which could then be used to pay down debt. If kids are in the picture dividing the money up between an RRSP and an RESP (registered education savings plan) would provide a smaller tax refund but the RESP deposit will attract a 20 per cent government grant. Now to dreams! I always advise those receiving a windfall to do a little dreaming about the future. It could be more education, a home or even a business. A few years back one reader took a chunk of her divorce settlement and bought a commercial grade sewing machine, cutting table and fitting dummy. She now has a internet business custom sewing for hard-to-fit folk. If you have kids you might want to indulge their dreams also. But take care with this because spending to assuage the pain of divorce is a temporary bandage at best. Next week, I’ll offer a few ideas for investing the windfall. House hunting
Activating Plan B – become a future landlord Fun and frugal
Leslie Scorgie money@metronews.ca Twitter: @Lesliescorgie
I cannot help my frugal self — I refuse to pay more for something than it’s worth. I’m nearing 30 days left before my house sale closes and I cannot seem to find a new property that fits my criteria AND has reasonable potential for added value. So, this week I began exploring an entirely new home-buying idea. What if, instead of succumbing to the pressure to buy an over-priced inner-city detached home, I bought with an entirely new set of criteria; a small, centrally located condo with high rental income potential? I’ll live in it for a few years, and when I finally do find the right shack, I can rent out the condo and move into my more affordably priced dream home. This idea led me to hours of Google research to determine what characteristics I should look for in a profitable rental income property. Buying in a good neighbourhood will help attract quality tenants. If you would like to rent to a family, the property needs to be located near schools and playgrounds. Proximity to downtown would be important in attracting a downtown professional. A low neighbourhood crime rate would make tenants feel safe. Locations that have growing employment opportunities attract a high volume of potential tenants. You can determine which communities are growing by researching on Statistics Canada or by visiting your local
What makes for a profitable rental income property?
librarian. Municipal planning departments can inform you on what other developments are set to take place near your rental property. Generally speaking, if there’s significant development zoned for your area, like malls or condos, growth is expected. But certain developments, like a major thoroughfare could increase noise and decrease green-space which will hurt your tenant prospects. Vacancy rates indicate how successful you’ll be at attracting tenants. Low vacancy rates allow landlords to maintain or raise rental rates. Alternatively, high vacancy rates force landlords to lower rents to scoop up tenants.
istock images
The condition of the property can be determined by a home inspector. Avoid ones with structural integrity issues. Inexpensive aesthetic changes can be made to ‘healthy’ properties that will attract tenants. Rental rate will determine whether the property is to be profitable. If the rent is not enough to cover the mortgage, condo fees, and taxes, keep looking around. The bottom line on rental properties is that they’re supposed to contribute to your equity and monthly cash flow, not the opposite. In my case, it may serve a secondary purpose — it buys me time to find the right house while building up a long-term investment.

We all remember ye olde tale of the online dater who organized his potential matches using a spreadsheet rankings of the women on a scale of one to 10. Now, brace yourself for the latest star of the awkward dating techniques show. Meet Mike, a 24-year-old finance worker based in Philadelphia, who is just looking for a little feedback. Unfortunately for him, his former dating partner seized the opportunity to humiliate him after she was sent a survey about her interaction with Mike once they agreed to stop seeing each other. The young woman met Mike on OKCupid and told Deadspin that he is “six feet, overall moderately attractive.” However, after a few dates, she realized it just wasn’t “there.” “He struck me as a little socially inept hence why I was starting to doubt the ‘nonphysical’ attraction,” she told Deadspin. “He wasn’t too creepy, just

It didn’t seem like he got out much.” And that’s when Mike sent the survey ... in an email ... with a subject line including a Romeo & Juliet passage. “Good Night, Good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow,
that I shall say good night till it be morrow,” if you must know. So what is it that Mike wants to know? All in a day’s work. • Do not disturb. Avoid smelly lunches, and if you’re making personal phone calls while you eat, be discreet.

Study: Canada’s higher-education system ranks high
Facts and figures
Cost effective • Funding. Government funding of post-secondary education as a percentage of GDP was highest in Finland, Norway and Denmark. But when private expenditure — such as tuition — was taken into account, the picture
changed drastically; funding was highest in the U.S., South Korea and Canada. • Tuition. Forty-five per cent of the cost of higher education is paid for by tuition. • Student opinion. Sean Madden, president of the
Career Finder
Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance, says that students are becoming increasingly concerned about the amount of time professors are spending in the classroom, and their effectiveness as teachers. Madden would like to see rankings consider student feedback.

Canada’s places of higher learning have snagged the third spot in a global ranking of the top post-secondary education systems. The United States made it to the top of the list of 48 countries, followed by Sweden. Finland, Denmark and Switzerland scored fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. India came in last. The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Melbourne and was sponsored by UniT:10”versitas 21, a global network of universities whose

Canadian members are the University of British Columbia and McGill University. A country’s success was determined by things like
the number of research articles published, the percentage of residents partaking in higher schooling and the national employment figures. Each country’s population was also taken into account for the study. “What is important is a policy and regulatory environment in which universities are given a good deal of internal freedom, but there are external quality checks,” said lead investigator Ross Williams. Universitas 21 said the ranking was created to show the importance of higher education in a country’s economy and place in the world. Can video games help us learn? BRUCE WALSH
Common themes
Metro News in Philadelphia
When you open up a new video game, do you read the instructions? Of course not. It’s just more fun to jump in and start pressing buttons. And, according to author Karl M. Kapp, that’s an instinct that educators should harness. In his latest book, The Gamification of Learning and Instruction, Kapp lays out his vision for appropriating the principles of video game design for the classroom. Surprisingly, his theories have little to do with online learning and more to do with the nuts and bolts of the traditional classroom. “If we’re clever about it, we can get to what really matters in games: It gives people a sense of purpose and mission, and it taps into our internal drives to overcome challenges,” says Kapp, a professor at Bloomsburg University.
Kapp has identified four common themes of video game design that can be applied to college-level lesson plans. 1. A challenge put forth at the outset of the course. 2. Integration of the student’s experience into a narrative.
“It’s about thinking like a game designer. They think challenge first, interactivity first, engagement first. In training, we tend to think content first. But content doesn’t mean anything unless it’s in a certain context.” For Kapp, at the heart of a well-designed course is providing students with an opportunity to learn as they fail — to throw away the instruction manual and get right to work. “Recently I oversaw an investigator training class, and

the first day they said: ‘Today we’re going to learn the model for investigating,’” explains Kapp. “I think that’s a bad model. As soon as the person walks into the class, you should say, ‘Look, someone’s been accused of embezzling $10,000. What are you going to do?’”

“Sure there’s hard moments and you’re suffering and you’d rather be other places, but the rewards you get back from persevering, that’s what keeps you here and I wouldn’t trade anything for it.” Canada’s Ryder Hesjedal on Monday. It doesn’t get much bigger than this for Hesjedal. Standing second overall, the 31-year-old from Victoria has five stages and 925 kilometres to go before the storied race finishes Sunday in Milan. Hesjedal, the designated leader of the Garmin-Barracuda team, is 30 seconds back of Spain’s Joaquin Rodriguez.

Monday’s game
Kyle Drabek overcame command issues to win for the first time on the road this season, Yunel Escobar hit a tie-breaking homer and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-2 on Monday night. Drabek (4-4), who entered 0-3 with a 5.23 ERA away from home, allowed two runs and three hits in six innings. The right-hander walked six, struck out three and had three wild pitches. an RBI grounder later in the eighth. The Rays took a 1-0 lead in the first when B.J. Upton was awarded a home run after a video review by the umpires determined his fly ball struck an overhanging catwalk. Upton hit a high fly to centre off Drabek. Blue Jays outfielder Colby Rasmus appeared to move into position to make the catch near the warning track, but the ball suddenly dropped in front of him and Upton reached second base. It was decided that the ball hit in the area that according to the ground rules is a home run. Hellickson gave up five runs — two earned — and eight hits over 7 1/3 innings. Blue Jays third baseman

Arencibia’s stellar week Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia was named the American League player of the week on Monday. •
Arencibia had four home runs, 10 RBIs and seven runs scored in six games last week. He batted .360 and went 9-for25 during that span.

It’s the 26-year-old’s first weekly MLB honour and marks the first time a Blue Jays catcher has won the award.
Brett Lawrie was back in the lineup after serving a fourgame suspension.
Brian McNamee finally got to name names in front of the jury. Andy Pettitte. Chuck Knoblauch. Mike Stanton. The U.S. government’s case got a boost as it hit the homestretch Monday in the sixth week of the perjury trial that will determine whether Roger Clemens lied to Congress in 2008 when the former star pitcher denied using performance-enhancing drugs. McNamee, Clemens’ former strength coach, is the only person to claim firsthand knowledge of Clemens using steroids and human growth hormone, and his credibility was attacked relentlessly last week by Clemens’ lawyer. The government embarked on a rehabilitation job with its key witness on Monday, then moved on to a beer expert who put a date on the infamous Miller Lite can that became a key piece of evidence and a witness who placed Clemens at a pool party at Jose Canseco’s house in 1998. Before Monday, McNamee had not been allowed to say that he provided former Clemens teammates Pettitte and Knoblauch with human growth hormone, or that he helped ex-Clemens teammate Mike Stanton obtain HGH from a drug dealer. Bass lowers boom as Celtics top 76ers Brandon Bass scored 18 of his post-season career-high 27 points in the third quarter on Monday night as the Boston Celtics pulled away from the Philadelphia 76ers to win 10185 and take a 3-2 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal series. Kevin Garnett added 20 points and Rajon Rondo had 13 points and 14 assists for the Celtics, who can advance to the East finals with a victory in Philadelphia on Wednesday. The Sixers need a win to force the series back to Boston for a decisive Game 7 on Saturday. Elton Brand scored 19 and Evan Turner had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Philadelphia, which led by six points early in the third quarter before Boston scored 14 of the next 16 points. The Celtics also scored 16 of the first 22 points in the fourth quarter — seven from Rondo — to put away the game. Paul Pierce had 16 points — going 9 for 9 from the free throw line — and Allen, back in the starting lineup because of an injury to Avery Bradley, had five points. The Celtics acquired Bass in December in a trade with Orlando for Glen “Big Baby” Davis, and he worked his way into the starting lineup after the all-star break. Although he solidified the power forward position after Garnett moved to centre, he hadn’t done anything spectacular — until Monday.

past Barons goalie Yann Danis for his league-leading eighth goal of the playoffs and the Marlies pulled ahead 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. Philippe Dupuis, Ryan Hamilton and Jerry D’Amigo had the other goals for Toronto. Ben Scrivens stopped 25 shots for his ninth win of the playoffs. Brian Rodney, Chris VandeVelde and Magnus Paajarvi replied for Oklahoma City. Yann Danis made 22 saves in defeat, his fourth of the postseason. The tightly-contested Game 3 in front 7,327 fans
was in stark contrast to the pair of blowouts (5-0 and 5-1) in the Games 1 and 2 in Oklahoma City. The Barons set the pace early with a furious forecheck and outshot Toronto 8-3 in the first 10 minutes of the game. But it was the Marlies that opened the scoring at 12:35 with the Barons’ Curtis Hamilton off for boarding. Dupuis wristed a weak shot from the left faceoff dot that found its way past a screened Danis. The teams played a tightchecking second period until they erupted for four goals in the span of just over four
minutes late in the frame. Toronto, which was just 10.6 per cent on the man advantage coming into the game, scored their first two goals Monday on powerplays. Oklahoma City also scored a rare powerplay goal against Toronto in the second period. Toronto led all playoff teams with a 96 per cent success rate on the penalty-kill coming into the game. Games 4 and 5 will be at Ricoh Coliseum. Nazem Kadri left the game after the first period due to an injury and didn’t return. the canadian press
