Editors put off by ‘creepy’ Magnotta Body-parts case. Subject of manhunt contributed articles to Vancouver-based journalism website matt kieltyka
matt.kieltyka@metronews.ca
Before becoming linked to a bizarre murder case making international headlines, Luka Rocco Magnotta had a knack for putting off editors with seedy contributions on a Vancouver-based citizenjournalism portal. Magnotta, currently the subject of a global manhunt for allegedly killing a person in Montreal and shipping body parts to the federal Conservative and Liberal parties in Ottawa, was a regular contributor to Orato.com.
Even then, former senior editor Heather Wallace said, his articles “did tip one off to the fact he wasn’t quite right.” “His posting caused mostly eye-rolling among the editing staff,” she recalled. “As we didn’t want to encourage him, I don’t think we engaged him much.” Magnotta wrote about being a male model and escort, being discriminated against because of his good looks and about his theories of “shadow people” — theories about whether perceived shapes and movements people sometimes see in their peripheral vision are in fact real beings, maybe supernatural or from another dimension. Staff openly questioned whether Magnotta had fabricated rumoured romantic links to serial killer Karla Homolka “because he want-
ed to be infamous.” “I remember us calling him a narcissist,” Wallace said. “There was some debate during editorial meetings as to whether we should delete his postings because they were so seedy, but ultimately we did not because he hadn’t done anything wrong besides be weird and creepy.” Magnotta’s 2007 post on shadow people is still available on the website, but his previous contributions have been lost since a website revamp. Orato, launched in 2006 and based in Vancouver, features stories that are contributed by members of the public and edited by professionals. More coverage (page 10)

Black bear buries dead man near Kamloops Shocking discovery. Evidence suggests that bear did not kill the deceased but did drag his corpse from car
Analysis
Burying carcass is part of normal bear behaviour

RCMP have recovered the body of a man thought to have died in his car before he was dragged out of it and partially buried by a black bear in a remote area about an hour south of Kamloops. Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said some hunters discovered the man’s abandoned 1986 Volkswagen Jetta around 6 p.m. Wednesday and phoned police. They found the driver’s dismembered and partially eaten remains about 120 metres from the car, covered in brush. Hard drug paraphernalia and a liquor bottle were found in the car. Learned said there is no indication the bear killed the man. “The window was fully down on the driver’s side. It wasn’t broken,” he said. “There were muddy bear paws on the side of the vehicle, the metal on the side of the vehicle just under the window was dented ... and the moulding around the window had been pulled down ... so all of the indicators suggested that the body had been removed from the vehicle.” Coroners are still trying to confirm the man’s identity, but the car is registered to a 54-year-old who had recently moved to Kamloops. An autopsy will likely be conducted to determine the

cause of death. So far, police have not been able to contact the owner’s next of kin. Learned said the owner of the Jetta was last seen in Kamloops on May 23, and early indications are he died just a few days before his

body was found. Conservation officers attempted to trap the bear Wednesday night, but Learned did not know if they were successful. Environment Minister Terry Lake said to ensure the
protection of the public, the bear will be destroyed if it is found. WITH FILES FROM THE CANADIAN PRESS Follow Kate Webb on Twitter @MetroK8
Provincial large-carnivore expert Tony Hamilton, a renowned bear biologist, said the black bear in this instance was exhibiting a normal behaviour known as caching. “Grizzlies and blacks do it,” he said. “I’ve seen multiples of both in my career, and I don’t think that anyone on the globe has ever really fully understood why they evolved to do it.” He said the best explanation is that, being omnivores, bears are slower at digesting meat, so they have to store carcasses they have killed or scavenged. “They cache because they’re going to be around a while. The meat is going to supply them for a while, so it reduces competition with others,” Hamilton explained. He said anyone who comes across a cache site, which is indicated by the smell of meat and a pile of brush or vegetation, should get away from it as bears guard their caches fiercely. He said he’s only ever heard of a case similar to this once before in his career, at least a decade ago, when a black bear was found guarding the body of a murder victim that had been wrapped in garbage bags on Mount Seymour.

VPD chief responds to ‘troubling’ video of Paul Boyd shooting New review. Boyd’s father says video shows that his son was not a threat to police when he was fatally shot matt kieltyka
matt.kieltyka@metronews.ca
Vancouver police chief Jim Chu was “disturbed” to see new video of Paul Boyd’s 2007 police-involved death and says he embraces a new review of the incident. Chu spoke to the media for the first time Thursday since new video of the incident — for which Const. Lee Chipperfield was cleared of wrongdoing — surfaced, showing an injured Boyd crawling on his hands and knees before being fatally shot. “I was very disturbed to see the video,” said Chu. “I think I share the same reaction that many other police officers experienced when they saw that video. It’s very troubling to see a loss of life occur.” Chu stood by the multiple investigations done to date into the incident that found there was insufficient evidence to lay criminal charges
against Chipperfield. While investigators, Crown prosecutors, and the police complaints commissioner didn’t have the benefit of the new video, Chu said the reports were thorough and the department has compiled all of the public documents onto a new “Events in the Death of Paul Boyd” section of the VPD website. The provincial government has reopened the investigation into the shooting since the video evidence came to light and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been put in charge of reviewing the case. Chu vowed to back ASIRT’s findings, whatever the outcome. “If the status of the case changes as a result of the current review, I promise the family today that our response will be appropriate and made without delay,” he said. Chipperfield is no longer assigned to frontline police duty and is currently working in the forensic-identification unit, according to the chief. Boyd’s father, David, has said the video is a clear indication that his son — who suffered from bipolar disorder — was not a threat to police when the fatal shot was

delivered, but isn’t holding his breath the new investigation will reach a different outcome.
Boyd had assaulted an officer with a bike chain and had already been shot six times by police before the fatal shot.
Chipperfield testified that he perceived Boyd to be a threat, but contradicted witness accounts that Boyd had
been crawling on the ground. Chu said he hopes the new investigation is properly concluded “as soon as possible”.
School kids discover more mutilated cats in Maple Ridge Two more dead cats have been found in Maple Ridge — this time by young children, bringing the number of dismembered pets found to nine in less than two weeks. “At recess time, there were some students who discovered a portion of a cat leg at one part of our school,” said Kevin Bodman, princi-
pal of Harry Hooge Elementary. “When I heard that, I went in and cleaned it up. “I thought that it was the end of it, but we weren’t aware that on the far side of the school, about 80 metres from were the leg piece was, there was a cat head,” he added. “It was at lunch time and there were lots of kids around when I cleaned that
up.” Bodman said he told the students it could’ve been coyotes that caused the deaths. Since last June, a total of 24 mutilated cats have been found in the area, between 217 and 230 streets. B.C. SPCA spokesperson Lorie Chortyk said the remains of the cat was found
in the school at around 1:40 p.m. and a calico cat’s leg was found blocks away outside a house on 221st Street later in the evening. She said they are following on leads after two men were spotted behind the elementary school, at 12280230th Street, where the cat’s head was dumped. “Our first goal is to stop

Vancouver police are warning that a convicted sex tourist poses a high risk of reoffending now that he’s been released into the community. Don Michel Bakker, 48, received a 10-year custody sentence in 2005 after being convicted of two counts of sexual assault causing bodily harm, sexual assault and seven counts of invitation to sexual touching. VPD spokesperson Const. Lindsey Houghton told media Bakker will be living in Vancouver under strict conditions but still poses a risk of “significant harm to the safety of female children and female sex-trade workers.” Bakker is a white male,

He cannot visit public parks, swimming pools or any locations where children may be. He cannot access the Internet or possess any still, video, or audio recording devices. Vancouver police say a man with connections to the infamous Duhre crime group was the victim of a brazen shooting outside the Port Moody Recreation Centre. Gurbinder Singh Toor, 35, was getting out of his car in the busy centre’s parking lot when he was shot at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses saw a dark coloured SUV flee the scene. Toor, who was at the centre to play ball hockey, was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries. “While it is still early in this investigation, we believe this was a targeted, gang-related shooting,” confirmed VPD spokesperson Const. Lindsey Houghton. The recreation centre remained closed Thursday morning as forensic investigators scoured the scene. “The Port Moody rec centre is an extremely busy recreational centre during the day and into the evening,” said Houghton. “This is a brazen shooting in a very public sense, and it’s disturbing to us. It is unacceptable.” the canadian press

Battling cultural stigma
CELEBRITY CHEF THROWDOWN
Group reaching out to Asians with HIV-AIDS A unique HIV-AIDS project is working to provide Vancouver’s Asian communities with education and support as well as deal with the stigma associated with the disease. AIDS Vancouver has been operating the Asian Community Outreach Project (ACOP) over the past year trying to reach out to Asians who are living with HIV or at risk of infection. Jessica Wood, director of development at AIDS Vancouver, said ACOP is the only service of its kind in Western Canada. She said the language barrier is one problem her group wants to address since HIV-AIDS services and pamphlets are predominantly written in English. “There is no method to actually start a casual conversation to get access to that information without either outing yourself or outing your risk,” she said. Tomiye Ishida, offsite case management supervisor, said there is still shame around HIV, so peer support is important. “I think people still bring from their home countries’ negative ideas and stigma around HIV and other issues connected to it, like injection drug use and sex.” The B.C. Centre for Disease Control’s 2009 annual report says Asians and South Asians account for the third-largest group newly diagnosed with HIV in the province after Caucasians and First Nations people. phylicia torrevillas/metro
Whale of a welcome
Orca calf spotted in B.C. waters Orca lovers got a treat this week when they spotted a new addition to the endangered family. The new calf, given the designation L119, is believed to be a few weeks old and was spotted around Juan de Fuca Strait. Since orcas give birth only every three years, orca-watcher Jenny Cooper says it’s exciting, particularly because L119’s 25-year-old mother, L77, also known as Matia, lost her previous calf. The sighting raises the hopes of researchers dedicated to helping grow the mammals’ numbers. “We’re hoping this calf will be OK,” Cooper said. phoebe ho/metro in victoria

The 10th annual three-day EAT! Vancouver Food + Cooking Festival kicks off at BC Place on Friday, and celebrity chef Bob Blumer is ready to throw down the oven mitts against two of the most famous chefs in the country. The host of World’s Weirdest Restaurants and Glutton for Punishment goes head-to-head at 2:30 p.m. on Friday with Iron Chef America winner Rob Feenie and David Rocco, host of David Rocco’s Dolce Vita, on the Food Network Celebrity Stage.

“We’re like professional wrestlers — when we’re in the ring we’re all, like, all business and beating each other up, and then as soon as we get out we’re all chummy and pally,” Blumer said on Thursday. “But we all definitely have egos, and despite anything the other two guys may tell you, all they want to do is win.” Blumer will be signing copies of his sixth and favourite cookbook, Glutton for Pleasure, from 2 to 9 p.m., and said fans needn’t be shy about approaching him. “When I’m there, there’s no such thing as a backstage room for me,” he said.
Rocco will also be signing copies of his new book, Made in Italy. While Blumer and the other celebrity chefs are facing off for fun and bragging rights, the festival will also be hosting three official competitions. Over three days, 20 of Western Canada’s best baristas will brew fine espresso drinks in the hope of winning the Canadian Regional Barista Championships and the chance to go on to the nationals and possibly represent Canada at the World Barista Championship in 2013. The BC Chefs’ Association will host a Chocolate Competition and Grand Culinary Salon. This year, for the first time, enthusiastic foodies can sign up for one-hour cooking classes taught by Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts instructors at the Pop-Up Culinary Centre. SlutWalk. Should event change its name? Vancouverites have until midnight on Friday to vote in an online poll that will decide whether the provocatively named SlutWalk should change its name to something less controversial. An organizer said about 50 people met in East Vancouver last Saturday to discuss the politics of the term “slut,” and most wanted to see the named changed. But as of Thursday afternoon just over half of those who voted in the poll were in favour of keeping the name. In close second was the alternative Yes Means Yes, and
trailing far behind were the suggestions End the Shame and Shame Stop. Vancouver’s next walk protesting victim-blaming and sexual violence will be held on June 30. The first SlutWalk was held in Toronto in April 2011, after a police officer told a group of university students to “stop dressing like sluts” to avoid being sexually victimized. To vote in the poll, go to the SlutWalk Vancouver Facebook page, or email your vote to slutwalkvancouver@gmail.com. Kate Webb/Metro

Suspect in body-parts case has fled Canada, police say Details emerge. Victim believed to be missing person police had been searching for JOE LOFARO
Metro in Ottawa
Montreal police say crime scene evidence suggests a man suspected of dismembering a human body and mailing parts of it from Montreal to Ottawa has fled Canada. The nationwide arrest warrant for Luka Rocco Magnotta, 29, was expanded Thursday after his photo and description appeared on Interpol’s most-wanted list. Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafrenière would not confirm or deny reports that Magnotta
may have headed to Europe. “We do have some evidence that we found on the scene and also that person left a note on a website (describing) how to leave without getting caught,” said Lafrenière. Meanwhile, police are trying to yank videos off of the Internet, which they believe show the suspect committing the murder and other perverse acts on the body. Police are still investigating the video, but Lafrenière said they “have no reason to doubt its authenticity.” Police believe the victim is a man in his 30s reported missing several days ago, whose family lives overseas. Lafrenière said police were still working out the forensic details and were also having trouble contacting the victim’s family. with files from the canadian press
Chasing notoriety
Profilers believe suspect seeks attention
Murder suspect Luka Rocco Magnotta is shown in a photo from his website. contributed/the canadian press
Experts in criminal behaviour say the suspect in the notorious body-parts case has a clear, desperate need: for you to pay attention to him. One retired criminal profiler says Luka Rocco Magnotta appears to reveal that need on the Internet. Jim Van Allen, a longtime Ontario Provincial Police criminal profiler, said Thursday that the elaborate cybertrail he left behind shows a need for notoriety. “I think you’re dealing with a person who has
a pathological need for attention,” said Van Allen, a former police officer. Van Allen said that while many details remain unknown, Magnotta’s extensive online postings, including a suspected video of the alleged murder, all indicate that desire. “I think that he has tried to shock the public to gain notoriety for himself,” Van Allen said. “And he’s certainly done that.” Montreal criminal psychiatrist Benoit Dassylva says it’s possible Magnotta is somewhere monitoring all the attention thrust upon him, and soaking it up. the canadian press
Quebec tuition talks with students suspended An attempt to find a solution to the Quebec student crisis has fallen apart, opening up a vast range of potential implications that could be felt from the street to the ballot box. After four days of negotiation, the provincial government and student groups announced Thursday that their talks had gone nowhere. There had been specula-
tion that if this latest attempt at negotiation failed, the provincial government might call a snap election and ask Quebec voters to help settle a dispute that has made international news. Premier Jean Charest said that day will indeed come — but he downplayed its imminence. The government is into the fourth year of its mandate
and must head to the polls by late 2013. “Ultimately there will be an election within 18 months,” Charest told reporters. “It will happen in a democratic context that will allow us to state our case on these issues.” In the meantime, both the government and student groups said they were willing
to speak again if the other side was ready to make an offer. The students had issued a mild threat to walk away from the negotiating table early in the day Thursday. But surprisingly, it was Education Minister Michelle Courchesne who announced talks had been suspended because of what she described as an “impasse.”
Students vs. province
• The students said the government had offered nothing except for a $35 discount on tuition hikes, and was unwilling to rescind a controversial law that sets limits on protests.
• But Courchesne said a subsequent government offer would have to cut the tuition increase by $100 in the first year before returning to $254 in the following six years, for a total increase of $1,621.

Syria on Thursday blamed up to 800 rebel fighters for the massacre in central Syria last week that killed more than 100 people, nearly half of them children.
The narrative starkly contradicted accounts of witnesses who blamed “shabiha,” or the shadowy gunmen who operate on behalf of President Bashar Assad’s regime. The UN also said it had strong suspicions those pro-regime gunmen were responsible for much of the carnage on Friday in a cluster of villages known as Houla. Facing international outrage over the killings, Damascus
launched its own investigation into the deaths and announced that special prayers for the victims would be held at mosques across the country on Friday. At a news conference, Qassem Jamal Suleiman, who headed the government’s investigation into the massacre, said rebel gunmen carried out the slaughter to frame the government and to ignite sectarian strife. Stacy Davis cries as she sits near a memorial in Seattle where a gunman went on a killing spree Wednesday.

City mourns. Police say hero saved three lives during horrific shooting spree by throwing stools Someone inside an artsy cafe where a gunman opened fire threw stools at the assailant during a shooting rampage police described as “callous, horrific and cold,” a move that allowed as many as three others to run to safety. Ian Lee Stawicki was armed with two .45-calibre handguns and began shooting Wednesday morning at Cafe Racer, killing four people. Police said he fled and later killed a female motorist, taking off with her SUV. Stawicki later killed himself as police closed in. Police said more could have been injured or even
Father’s statement
“I just hope they understand he wasn’t a monster out to kill people.” Walter Stawicki, father of the alleged gunman
killed at the cafe were it not for the actions of the man, whom they did not identify. They did not say whether he was a patron or an employee. “The hero picked up a stool and threw it at the suspect. Hit him. Picked up another stool, as the suspect is shooting and now pointing (a gun) at him and hits him with another stool,” Assistant Chief Jim Pugel said. “During that time, two or possibly three people made their escape,” he said, adding, “He saved three lives.” The slayings further
frayed nerves in an already jittery city that has seen 21 homicides so far this year, as many as Seattle had in all of 2011. “In my almost 30 years in this department, I’ve never seen anything more callous, horrific and cold,” Deputy Chief Nick Metz said at a Thursday news conference. Stawicki had bounced around serving as a roadie for bands and helping his mother garden. The gunman’s father struggled Thursday to understand how his son could have gone on a shooting rampage and apologized to the victims’ families. Ian Stawicki, 40, had suffered from mental illness for years and gotten “exponentially” more erratic, his father said. Family members had been unable to get him to seek help. the associated press

Campaign targets fake fashion Anti-counterfeiting campaign. Geographical borders are becoming less relevant in fight against counterfeit goods with expansion of e-commerce An association of 75 French luxury brands has launched a campaign against knockoff designer products, warning people in seven European countries of the high costs of fake goods to the industry — and potentially
to buyers and sellers. The anti-counterfeiting group, Comite Colbert, put up posters Wednesday in Paris featuring photos of fake phones, shades, watches and horse-skin handbags next to printed warnings of potential high fines and even jail time. One reads: “A bet on the wrong horse can be very expensive.” Another advises: “Buy a fake Cartier, get a genuine criminal record.” Though it is a global phenomenon, counterfeiting is especially rampant in France, the capital of the luxury and cosmetics industries, which employs some 131,000 people, and is home to the world’s pre-

your (barber’s) Raging bull gores matador fired The world is having a very stressful week. All kinds of Paul Sullivan nerve-racking stuff going on, Metro starting with: Mr. Dahmer goes to Ottawa? Gay-porn star Luka Rocco Magnotta allegedly tortures kittens, slices up a naked man and sends the body parts in the mail to various places, including Parliament Hill. Yikes. National shame. It’s another Stanley Cup and, once again, no Canadian teams are involved. So, as we stand with our noses pressed to the glass, we ask: Who is Canada’s team? The Los Angeles Kings or the New Joisey Devils? Like, oops. On network TV, Kathie Lee Gifford congratulates Martin Short for his long, happy marriage. The only problem is, his wife died two years ago. Then she apologizes on Twitter, albeit to the wrong Twitter handle. What’s your kid doing today? Bullfighting in Spain
Matador (El Juli) on the horns

This was a scary moment for one of Spain’s most celebrated bullfighters. Julian (El Juli) Lopez was thrown in the air and then gored in the stomach by a bull at a festival in the town of Aranjuez this week. After losing consciousness, Lopez returned to finish the fight and was carried off at the finish by spectators.

The ringmaster, from the age of 9 Lopez, 29, has had a remarkable career. He was training with bulls at the age of nine and fought in Mexico at 14 to avoid Spain’s law against underage matadors. Snow White and The Huntsman. Charlize Theron’s shrieking performance usurps Kristen Stewart’s turn as Snow White Richard: Chris, this movie plays like the love child of the Grimm Brothers and The Hobbit. It is dark in tone and in look with just a few hi ho ho’s provided by the Seven Dwarfs. That’ll be my last bad Snow White joke, I promise. The first hour is a gothic fairy tale, the second hour more an action movie, but through it all Theron’s bug-eyed Grand Guiginol performance remains constant. Was she too over the top, or just over the top? Chris: One scream of rage would have been over the top. By the time she turned into a melting puddle of dying, tar-

soaked crows, I realized that both the dark tone of the film and Charlize’s shrieking vampire queen performance were more Hammer Horror than Walt Disney... and I was in deep, of course. But what did you think of Stewart’s Snow White? RC: K Stew is the movie’s big draw, marquee wise, and while she holds down the fort, I found that unless she was on horseback, or staring down a troll, I wasn’t that interested in her performance. The talky bits aren’t nearly as interesting as the yelling bits (thanks to Charlize’s unhinged performance) or the action sequences. Unfortunately, she is saddled with most of the dialogue, and it is the last interesting thing about the movie. CA: Stewart was a fantastic Joan Jett. Not so much earth goddess/warrior queen but whatever, I forgave her slight, tomboyish presence when so many operatic visuals were ex-
Synopsis
In this twist on a familiar fairy tale, Charlize Theron is Ravenna, an evil queen so obsessed with being the fairest in the land she condemns the dead king’s lovely daughter, Snow White (Kristen Stewart), to a lifetime of solitude and captivity. When the queen’s mirror tells her that Ms. White will one day reclaim the throne, Ravenna does what any evil monarch would do. She decides to eat Snow’s still beating heart, thereby ensuring immortality and the throne. Chris Alexander sits in for Mark Breslin this week. •

ploding around her. Strangely, however, I found that some of my favourite moments in
the film were the quiet ones; the sequences of technicolour fairy forests and character moments where — alarmingly — you actually empathized with Theron’s soul-sucking monster. What do you think Stewart’s TWI-hard fanbase will think? RC: She couldn’t muster the fanpires for The Runaways but this time around will be different, I think. Her version of Snow White has much in common with the elements that appeal to the Twilight fans. There’s no werewolves or vampires, but there is true love, fantasy and even the sweeping crane landscape shots are reminiscent of her best-known films. CA: Well, she certainly has a better shot at pleasing her fanbase with this lush gothic fantasy than her sparkly paramour Pattinson does getting a five-minute prostate exam in Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, that’s for sure.... but we’ll save that for another day.
Starbuck creators win prize The two creators of Quebec’s fertility comedy Starbuck have each won a $20,000 prize from Telefilm Canada. On Wednesday, director Ken Scott and his co-writer Martin Petit landed the 2011 Guichet d’Or award. The annual honour goes to the Canuck director and writer of a Canadian French-language feature film with the highest-grossing domestic box-office sales during the previous year.In 2011, Starbuck took in more than $3.5 million at the Canadian box office, according to Telefilm Canada. Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks Studios announced last month it’s revamping the francophone film with a new script that would set the action in New York. Scott will also direct the remake with original producer Andre Rouleau of Caramel Films onboard. Telefilm says the film will also be remade for France with Made in PM as the producer. The 2010 winners of the Guichet d’or were the creators of “Piche: entre ciel et terre.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

To be honest, Piranha 3DD doesn’t take itself very seriously. And so I won’t be excoriating some disparaging critical diagnosis or justifying any hopeful merit (for the record there are no merits). Just know that when the producers pitched this low-brow money-grab about a waterpark overrun with flesh-eating fish (need I say more?), they likely only had three words for potential investors: blood, boobs and 3D.
Writer/director/producer Patrick Wang also stars in In the Family, his subtle but incredibly moving first feature film. Cody (St. John) and Joey (Wang) have raised Cody’s biological son, Chip (Banes), together since he was a baby. But when Cody is killed in a car accident, Joey learns that Cody’s six-year-old will names Cody’s sister as Chip’s legal guardian. In the Family follows Joey as he attempts to regain custody of his son and as he learns what it really means to be “family.”
Italian auteur (and Cannes Film Fest jury president) Nanni Moretti’s intriguing comedy We Have a Pope explores the notion of a pontiff going rogue with an anxiety attack after gaining his newly appointed status. While the rambling story may meander at times, French acting legend Michel Piccoli gives the protagonist a heavenly presence definitely worth checking out.

••••• Wes Anderson’s films aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. And with Moonrise Kingdom, the quirky auteur (The Royal Tenenbaums) doesn’t bow to box-office pressure over originality either. Set in 1965, two adolescents fall in love and runaway on a small island on the eve of a great storm. While Anderson won’t likely recruit many new fans, there’s no denying his evocative, meticulous style, which helps make this film a fascinating contemporary fable.
If A Beginner’s Guide to Endings didn’t feel so contrived from its fabricated foundation, it might have been a cool film. A comic look at three distinct brothers who struggle with imminent mortality alongside their no-good gambling dad (Harvey Keitel), the trio attempt their own bucket lists with slightly predictable results. Jonathan Sobol definitely has some set skills, but the accomplished cast seems to enjoy the material more than the audience.

Sports movies by definition have a predetermined ending — the underdog team wins despite the odds, or loses the game, but wins on moral grounds. Despite this, Hollywood continues to churn the things out like they were Avengers’ solo films. Crooked Arrows in no way deviates from this pattern — it literally lifts its plot points from the Mighty Ducks, replacing inner city kids playing hockey with first-nations kids playing lacrosse.
Richard Linklater’s docudrama takes off from the bizarre real-life story of a Texas funeral home worker who murdered his elderly female companion. But it’s not a lurid, ripped-fromthe-headlines melodrama. Instead, this gifted filmmaker fashions an oddly affectionate paean to small-town eccentricity rooted in local detail and adorned by Jack Black’s controlled, slightly eerie performance as the likeable yet homicidal title character.

METRO DISH OUR TAKE ON THE WORLD OF CELEBRITIES
Je t’aime: Sparks fly for Mary-Kate Olsen and former French president’s brother Zhang Ziyi
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star accused of prostitution Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Zhang Ziyi has been accused of earning $110 million by prostituting herself to Chinese government officials and businessmen, according to the Daily Mail. The unsubstantiated claims in Chinese media detail the actress accepting large sums of money from various Beijing officials between 2007 and 2011, with one businessman reportedly
Mary-Kate Olsen is reportedly dating former French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s younger brother, Olivier Sarkozy, according to Us Weekly. “It’s true, they’re dating, and she’s definitely interested in him,” a source says. “MK
is constantly complaining about boys not being mature enough for her. She got the kids out of her system. Now being a businesswoman dominates her time, and she is rarely impressed with guys. They are good for each other.”

Pon de replay: Rihanna and Drake back together? Exes Rihanna and Drake, who dated briefly in 2009, may be giving things another go, if their behaviour at a Miami hotspot on a recent night out is any indication. “Rihanna was all over Drake this weekend,” a source tells Us Weekly. “They were holding hands and dancing all close on the
dance floor.” The pair have remained close friends and frequent collaborators since their brief romance. “We weren’t really sure what it was,” Rihanna previously said in an interview of her dating Drake. “We didn’t want to take it any further. It was a really fragile time in my life...”

Grilled Vegetable Napoleons
Beer and iced tea? LIQUID ASSETS
Peter Rockwell @therealwineguy peterrockwell@eastlink.cca
I’ve never been one to mess with a good thing, especially when it comes to booze. So for me the blend of hops, yeast, water and grain that defines beer is pretty much perfection. And while the description of beer includes dozens upon dozens of different varieties that come by their taste profiles naturally, the trend toward flavoured brews is taking the industry by storm. Beer needs them. Sales have seen better days, and industry innovation seems inspired by 1812 rather than 2012, with old school English-style ales the darlings of the aficionado set. That’s what’s fun about Coors Light Iced T (12 x 355 ml, $20.31 $24.99). On the surface it sounds like a mad attempt to attract a summertime audience with a Franken-blend of two totally foreign liquids. The good news is that in the glass it tastes just like iced tea without losing the subtle malty expression of the suds — and it’s a light beer. This is the first time the Coors Light brand has been extended outside its singular universe and the pitch hits a solid home run.

Old Order Mennonite cooking meets modern technology with a new app of Edna Staebler’s Food That Really Schmecks cookbook. Staebler’s hugely successful cookbook extolled the cuisine and lifestyle of Old Order Mennonites. The book was originally published in 1968 and became a classic, selling tens of thousands of copies. New material on the app includes photos and videos of Staebler and the Waterloo Region countryside. Recipes are searchable and users can upload photos and recipe suggestions that will be shared with all users — just like your grandmother’s scribbles in the margins of the family cookbook. It’s also possible to upload one’s own pictures to the recipes. This digital book is available for free for a limited time on iTunes. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Close call for I’ll Have Another
Flames hitch their wagon to Hartley
Mickelson too tired for Memorial

Bob Hartley was named the new head coach of the Calgary Flames on Thursday. Hartley said he was in talks with the Montreal Canadiens, but informed them Thursday morning he would join the Flames.
Phil Mickelson withdrew from the Memorial on Thursday due to mental fatigue. Mickelson said it was more important for him to be rested for the U.S. Open in two weeks than to finish Jack Nicklaus’ tournament.

“I’m not concerned at all.” Boston Celtics shooting guard Ray Allen on Thursday. The Eastern Conference final shifts to Boston on Friday night for Game 3, with the Heat holding a 2-0 lead after staving off perhaps the Celtics’ best shot with a 115-111 overtime victory on Wednesday.
Both Kings and Devils say best is yet to come NHL. New Jersey looks to settle nerves while L.A. hopes to bring more energy for Game 2 of cup final The New Jersey Devils played poorly and almost won. Coach Peter DeBoer’s team looked to turn that into a positive following Wednesday’s 2-1 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final. The Devils overcame a slow start to send the game into overtime, only to see Kings star Anze Kopitar decide the affair on a breakaway. Thursday was a light day for both teams, with Game 2 not until Saturday. After the loss, the Devils were all reading from the same page. “Not playing our best game and still having a chance to win, that makes us feel pretty good that we can play better and be a little more successful,” said forward Travis Zajac. Forward Ryan Carter added, “We had our chances in that game. Outplayed or not, poor execution or not, we had our chance to win that game. We’ve got to look into that, stay positive, and try to find a way to win the next one.” Added DeBoer: “We got a
chance to get into overtime in the first game with a chance to win.” Unfortunately for the Devils, the Kings also say they have more to bring. “We played all right. I think it’s different adjusting to a new team, adjusting to a different building here,” said defenceman Matt Greene. “But we’ve got to play better if we want to give ourselves a chance to win another game this series.” “I think we can be better,” said Kings captain Dustin Brown. “At the end of the day we found a way to win.” Kings coach Darryl Sutter said a lot of his players said they felt sluggish Wednesday. “I thought we had some nervous players,” he said. “Our guys felt they can play better. That’s a good thing. And I’m sure the other team is saying the same thing too.”

“He continued to have great success, but for different reasons. He didn’t just overpower teams; he outsmarted teams.... He wasn’t as domineering as he was earlier.” Former Astros manager Phil Garner’s testimony during the Rogers Clemens perjury trial on Thursday. Garner told one great story after another. Clemens working out in a flak jacket with 60 pounds of weights. Clemens yelling at himself. Clemens yelling at others. Clemens noticing that home plate was a little bit out of line. Garner was sitting on a witness stand, but sounded at times as if he were again a major-league baseball manager, spinning yarns in a casual pre-game dugout chat. None of those stories involved Clemens using performance-enhancing drugs.

Kevin Durant scored 22 points, Thabo Sefolosha set playoff career-bests with 19 points and six steals, and the Oklahoma City Thunder snapped San Antonio’s 20game winning streak by beating the Spurs 102-82 in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals on Thursday night. Oklahoma City closed its series deficit to 2-1 and will host Game 4 on Saturday night. Sefolosha threw a wrench in the Spurs’ well-oiled offence at the start, getting four steals in the first three minutes. The Spurs ended up com-

mitting a post-season-worst 21 turnovers and scoring their fewest points all season. Tony Parker and Stephen Jackson led the Spurs with 16 points apiece. Tim Duncan had 11 points on 5-for-15 shooting, taking 11 of San Antonio’s first 25 shots as the offence went through the allstar centre instead of Parker.
San Antonio had been averaging 109.4 points during its month-and-a-half winning streak and had been held to double digits only twice. The Spurs, who already set an NBA record for the longest winning streak carried over from the regular season into the playoffs, were trying to match the league mark for most wins to start the postseason. The Lakers won 11 straight to start the 1989 and 2001 playoffs, getting swept in the NBA finals the first time and winning it all the second. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Raonic moves on in Paris
Benevides boldy follows in Buono’s footsteps Mike Benevides speaks during a press conference in December 2011 in Surrey. Richard Lam/the canadian press
CFL. Canadian-born coach has worked with Buono since 2000 in Calgary Mike Benevides’ quest for a fourth Grey Cup ring will be so much different than his previous three. The 44-year-old Toronto native heads into his first training camp as a CFL head coach, taking over the B.C. Lions job when veteran Wally Buono stepped down from the post shortly after the club’s Grey Cup victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Not only must Benevides shoulder the weight of expectation of a team looking
to repeat, he also faces trying to replace the winningest coach in league history. While following Buono — who amassed 254 career wins and remains the club’s GM — would seem to be a daunting task, Benevides has coached with Buono since their days in Calgary in 2000 and says that relationship has helped him ease into his new position and the spotlight. “From the outside looking in it would be extremely difficult if I did not have a relationship with him,” Benevides said. “If I looked at it that way, it would be impossible. “There will never be another Wally Buono, there will never be anybody to win that many games again

as long as this league is around. I can only be myself.” Benevides served as B.C.’s defensive co-ordinator last season and inherits a veteran-laden team led by quarterback Travis Lulay,
the CFL’s outstanding player last season. “I think a lot of it early on is making sure all the logistics are right and loose ends are tied up so we have a smooth transition to get our camp started,” he said. “After that, it’s keeping a clear eye on all the evaluations and not just on defence. “At the same time there’s making sure my impression is on all phases of the football team. It’s a little different in the sense that it’s a lot of logistics and making sure everything runs smoothly and setting up schedules, as I see it, and after that it’s messaging what I want from the guys and how hard we should practise.”
Canadian Milos Raonic defeated American qualifier Jesse Levine 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 on Thursday to reach the third round of the French Open. The 19th-seeded Thornhill, Ont., native will face a true clay test in the next round when he plays Argentina’s Juan Monaco after the 13th seed defeated Czech Lukas Rosol. Raonic claimed his victory in just under two hours with 16 aces. The 21-year-old fired 40 winners and broke Levine five times. A loser in the first round at Roland Garros last year, Raonic was able to dictate against his 131st-ranked opponent, letting Levine eventually make errors. Raonic is trying to extend a successful clay season after beating Andy Murray in the Barcelona quarter-finals last month before losing to David Ferrer in the semis. Raonic saved six break points in victory, dominating in the final set against Levine as he ran away with it on an outside court. He advanced on

his first match point as Levine put a return wide. Raonic admitted the win was far from his best effort. “The whole first set I struggled with my serve,” he said. “Even after that I started getting it, but in glimpses. I wasn’t serving consistently well throughout match.” The Canadian will be playing for the first time against Monaco, who owns six ATP clay titles, including two this season.
