Weekend shooting
Arrested man had gang ties: Father The man arrested and charged in the Eaton Centre shooting was a young father wrapped up in gang violence, his father said. Christopher Husbands, 23, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and six counts of attempted murder after he turned himself in to police early Monday morning. Toronto police said that Husbands had been previously charged with an unrelated offence and was under house arrest. Police said the shooting was not gang-related, but there were personal factors involved, despite previous statements at least one of the victims had known gang associations. But Husbands, who was born in Guyana and immigrated to Toronto in 2000, was involved in gang activity, the Toronto Star has learned. Burchell Husbands, the accused’s father, found out about his son’s involvement in the Eaton Centre shooting shortly after midnight Monday, he said. He also said he’s terrified his family will face retaliation from opposing gang members — though he couldn’t identify who that might be. “Right now the whole family’s scared,” he said. “We don’t know who’s going to come here just now.” Two months ago, Christopher Husbands survived what his father believed was a gang attack by six people when he was stabbed more than 20 times. When asked what he’d want the public to know about his son, there was a long silence on the other end of the phone. “He was a good guy coming up,” he said. “He was good.” “Gang changed everything,” he said quietly. The 13-year-old victim of the Eaton Centre shooting was alert and talking Monday after surgery to his skull. “After complicated neurosurgery, we are happy to say that he is doing well, all things considered; he is alert and talking,” Connor Stevenson’s family said in a prepared statement. “It will be a long healing process, but we are optimistic that he will recover.” Stevenson’s family said that he was listed in fair condition Monday after being hit in the head with a stray

Man charged. Police won’t discuss possible motive for incident An unspecified personal issue apparently sparked the bloody weekend gun rampage that left one man dead and two people badly wounded, including a teen who was shot in the head during a family outing at one of Canada’s top tourist spots. A man under house arrest for a previous charge turned himself in to police early Monday and was charged with one count of first-degree murder and six of attempted murder related to the Eaton Centre shooting. The dead man, along with an associate who remained in critical condition with gunshot wounds, belonged to the same gang as the accused, police said. “Regardless, I do not believe this to be a gang-motivated shooting,” said Det. Sgt. Brian Borg, the lead investigator. “I believe there’s personal aspects involved.” Police refused to discuss a

Health. Algorithm created to calculate heart failure risk Heart failure is one of the most common reasons people are admitted to hospital, but it’s not always easy for physicians to tell which patients should be hospitalized and which ones can return home after receiving treatment. To help doctors make those decisions, Toronto researchers have developed a unique tool that can calculate an individual patient’s risk of death from heart failure. The Emergency Heart Failure Mortality Risk Grade, or EHMRG, is an algorithm that calculates a patient’s risk based on 10 heart health measures, including blood pressure and heart rate. According to Dr. Douglas Lee, a scientist at the Institute Regulation
for Clinical Evaluative Sciences and lead author of the study, doctors are usually able to make good decisions about hospitalization for patients in very poor health or for those who are reasonably well. “But it’s the middle group where the most improvement can be made,” he said in a release. “Some of these patients are dying at home or spending days in a hospital bed that they don’t need to be in.” Lee is developing smart phone and web-based applications so emergency room physicians can use the tool in real time. The research was published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Torstar News Service

Bullying. Middle school gay-straight alliance formed in Toronto east end The controversial gay-straight alliances that are about to become protected by Ontario law Tuesday are starting to pop up before high school. Teacher Natasha Garda runs what is believed to be the first gay-straight alliance (GSA) at a Toronto middle school, grades 6 to 8 at Westwood Middle School near Carlaw and Cosburn Aves. Its members recently ran workshops for local Grade 5 students about gender stereotypes and homophobia. Launching GSAs earlier than high school is an idea the Ele-
mentary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario supports so strongly, it organized a recent how-to in which Garda gave tips to some 50 colleagues from across the province. Westwood principal Helen Fisher said she plans to offer help to nearby middle schools to start their own GSAs. “You think Grade 7 is too young to talk about this? I say it’s too old — the seeds of bullying are taking root by Grade 4,” argued Grade 8 student Jamie. “It’s good to educate kids early about how to fight bullying.” Torstar news Service
Nearly two years in custody spent over letters to ex’s family Mental-health law. Woman hospitalized indefinitely over crime that carries a maximum six-month sentence says her rights were infringed Astrida Kankis has been labelled mentally ill, a designation the tall, 51-year-old cleaning company supervisor denies. But one thing seems certain, Kankis was subject to a miscarriage of justice last year when she was found not criminally responsible by reason of mental illness for six minor charges, and was hospitalized indefinitely. “Her legal rights were factored completely out of the equation,” Superior Court Justice Gary Trotter said in a January ruling, ordering a new trial. Kankis spent almost two years in pre-trial custody or in a psychiatric hospital for charges that would likely not have resulted in any jail time, Trotter said. The maximum sentence is six months. “I couldn’t understand why they were holding me for such a long time,” said Kankis, who is now on bail. On Monday, Kankis appeared before another judge, Kathleen Caldwell, in Old City Hall provincial court, and said she is filing an abuse of process application against the Crown, which is going ahead with a second trial. “At some point the Crown loses its right to prosecute,” Christopher Murphy, Kankis’s court-appointed legal adviser, said in an interview. “My view is the Crown has lost that right already.”
Letters:
• In court Monday, Crown prosecutor Onelia Delgado said she would withdraw the charges if Kankis agreed to sign another peace bond. • Kankis refused on principle, despite not having contacted the family for three years. “I wrote intelligent, educational letters and I was charged with a crime,” she told the judge.
In August 2010, provincial court Justice Sheila Ray found Kankis guilty of six counts of breaching a recognizance for sending six letters to the family of her ex-boyfriend, in contravention of a peace bond. Kankis admitted to sending the letters, which were full of well-meaning health advice, but still refuses to accept she did anything wrong. After she was found guilty, the Crown applied, against her will, to have her found not criminally responsible owing to mental illness. She was held in custody six months pending psychiatric assessments. On Feb. 10, 2011, Kankis was brought to court and handed a lengthy psychiatric report by Dr. Jonathan Rootenberg. Rootenberg wrote she suffers from a major mental disorder — most likely schizophrenia — and could not appreciate her letters were morally wrong. Kankis was sent back to the cells and given 30 minutes to read the report without the benefit of a pencil, pen or highlighter. When she returned, the judge refused her request,

which the Crown opposed, for a two-week adjournment to find a lawyer. Kankis was forced to crossexamine Rootenberg without any assistance and with poor
results, Trotter said. Ray found her not criminally responsible and she was ordered to a psychiatric facility. Kankis’ new trial is set for January. Torstar news service

Inquest needed into Ornge patient deaths: Ontario PCs
Peel Region. Public works employees go on strike Peel Region’s unionized public works employees — who, among other things, test water safety — went on strike Monday morning. The 282 workers join more than 500 striking Ontario Works employees in the region, also represented by CUPE Local 966, who have been off the job for more than a month. The public works unit voted 93 per cent in favour of striking in March, and was in a legal strike position at 12:01
a.m. Monday. The union is seeking salary increases comparable to the two per cent raise nonunionized staff at the region received early in the year, but says its members are being offered considerably less. Union officials have said proposed clawbacks to benefits are unacceptable. The region has said it’s trying to bring benefits to Local 966 members in line with other bargaining units. Councillors split on the plastic bag
The Progressive Conservatives are questioning why Ontario’s chief coroner hasn’t yet called an inquest into more than two dozen patient deaths involving Ornge, the province’s troubled air ambulance service. Details surrounding the deaths were contained in confidential documents intended for cabinet that were released by the Tories last Friday. The Health Ministry investigated the deaths while probing 145 incidents involving Ornge
since 2007. They included delays in dispatching air ambulances, paramedics unable to perform CPR due to cramped conditions in the helicopters, staff shortages and paramedics running out of supplies like oxygen and medication. Forty of the incidents — five of which involved the death of a patient — were opened this year, after the government installed new leadership at Ornge.
Council to decide fate of outreach workers’ jobs It was a spate of 2005 shootings involving young people that prompted council to assign “priority” status to 13 needy neighbourhoods. In the aftermath of Saturday’s shooting at the Eaton Centre, council must decide Thursday whether to preserve the jobs of 17 of the 29 city youth outreach workers who help needy young people. Under the council-approved budget for 2012, the 17 jobs will be eliminated this month unless councillors vote to provide additional funding.
Rookie councillor James Pasternak, who is among councillors who say Ford and his staff are strongly encouraging them to vote with him to kill the fee
ing city staff report the use of disposable bags has dropped 53 per cent since the fee was introduced June 1, 2009. Several councillors who voted against the tax back then, including David Shiner, John Parker and Karen Stintz, want to scrap it now. Plastic bags now go in the recycling blue bin, they noted. Also, some call it nonsensical to force retailers to charge a fee that puts millions of dollars in their own pockets. Grocery chains are expected to keep charging it whether it’s mandatory or not. “The city had no authority to impose that tax,” said Stintz, the TTC chair. “We’ve raised people’s collective awareness about recycling and have added bags to the recycling stream. The accountability falls to retailers as to what they’re charging and where the money goes.” Torstar News Service

Councillor Michelle Berardinetti, campaigning to keep the 5-cent fee but encourage big retailers to divert some proceeds to the city’s tree canopy, doesn’t know if it will survive the Thursday council meeting. “The margin for the vote is really tight, razor thin,” she said Monday. “It seems a few (councillors) might have had a change of heart. Hopefully the debate and discussion will bring them back (to support the fee).” Berardinetti is working with celebrity gardener Mark Cullen to craft a “marketing and branding” campaign to give retailers good publicity in return for a slice of bag profits to help replace some of the 860,000 ash trees expected to fall victim to the emerald ash borer pest. “If something’s working, why rescind it,” she asked, not-
In a statement released late Friday, chief coroner Andrew McCallum said there were no completed cases “in which issues with air ambulance transportation materially affected the course of the patient’s illness or injury.” But it’s odd that McCallum hasn’t called an inquest, given the number of deaths and the circumstances surrounding some of the cases, Tory Frank Klees said Monday.

Depending on whether you are a wealthy Torontonian or a low-income resident, you may be admitted to hospital for a different reason, new research suggests. An analysis of patients admitted to 20 Toronto hospitals found household income was tied to the type of treatment a patient received. People in the highest income brackets were more likely to have same-day surgery than low-income residents. The reverse was seen when the researchers looked at mental health admissions and emergency room visits. Torstar News Service
Scathing audit report for theatre The centre of Brampton’s arts scene, the city-run Rose Theatre, has received a scathing audit report questioning how revenues are accounted for, who approves ticket giveaways and why management is not responding to concerns. The report, which goes before the audit committee Wednesday, found “procedures, policies and by-laws” are not being followed, expenses
aren’t being recorded properly, money is not being transferred to proper accounts and cannot be traced, and complimentary tickets are handed out without proper approval. The internal audit concluded that controls in place at the theatre “are not adequate” and recommended several improvements, including “enhancing management oversight.” When the orchestra’s state-
ments did not match up with the amount of donations the gala claimed it contributed, the gala board said some of the discrepancy was due to rehearsal space at the Rose paid for directly by the gala. Questions had also been raised about the number of free tickets the gala receives for Rose Theatre events, which are given away by the gala. Torstar News Service

‘Carver from Montreal’ Magnotta arrested in Berlin Internet café
‘Good work’ Harper tells police Prime Minister Stephen Harper commended police for catching Magnotta. “Well, I’m obviously pleased that the suspect has been arrested, and I just want to congratulate the police forces on their good work,” the prime minister said in London, where he is attending the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. In Montreal, Lin’s former boss said Monday that there’s no way to bring the 33-year-old back, but he’s glad the suspect has been arrested. “I feel like there is justice — it does exist,” said Kankan Huang, owner of a convenience store where the computer-science student worked part-time as a cashier since last August. Along with murder, Magnotta is also facing other charges in Canada, including corrupting morals; causing an indignity to a body; using the mail system to deliver “obscene, indecent, immoral or scurrilous” material; and harassing the prime minister.
Warning: Graphic content. ‘OK, you got me,’ says Magnotta, who was arrested without incident Luka Rocco Magnotta, Canada’s most-wanted fugitive, was arrested in Berlin on Monday after being spotted reading news reports about himself on the Internet. His capture came less than a week after international police launched a worldwide manhunt for the alleged killer from Montreal. A Berlin police spokesman said Magnotta was nabbed at about 2 p.m. local time at an Internet café in the German capital. Magnotta, 29, is facing five charges in Montreal, including first-degree murder, in the brutal slaying and dismemberment of Jun Lin, a Chinese national who was studying at Concordia University. Lin’s torso was found stuffed inside a suitcase on a Montreal curb outside Magnotta’s apartment building last Tuesday.

Sentenced. Woman Death row. Accomplice convicted of manslaughter says partner in crime for drowning two sons deserves to live A woman who drowned her two young sons in the bathtub of the family home was sentenced Monday to six years for manslaughter, but will be eligible for parole in less than a year. Allyson McConnell, who is originally from Australia, is getting two-for-one credit for the time she has already spent in Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, meaning there are 15 months left in her sentence. She will be eligible for parole in 10 months. Justice Michelle Crighton recommended McConnell remain at the mental hospital until doctors believe she is well enough to be transferred to another facility. She pointed out McConnell might never go free because she is still under a mental health warrant and it is up to her treatment team to decide if she is well enough to return to society. The boys’ grandmother and father cried in court, but McConnell sat quietly and showed no emotion. When asked by the judge if she had anything to say, she answered simply: “no.’’ McConnell was originally charged with second-degree
Emotional Case
The boy’s paternal grandparents have each made emotional statements. • The grandfather questioned whether the sentence would stop people from killing children. “This is crazy. I can’t believe it,’’ he said. • “I cried for days knowing there would be no new ones,” the grandmother said after cleaning fingerprints left by the children.
murder, but Crighton convicted her of manslaughter in April. The judge said there was a “black hole’’ in McConnell’s memory and no one could know whether the depressed and suicidal woman meant to kill her boys. McConnell and her husband were in the middle of a bitter divorce and she wanted to take their children back to Australia. The Crown is appealing the manslaughter conviction. the canadian press
A man who was convicted along with Ronald Smith in the murder of two Montana men 30 years ago says his former partner-in-crime saved his life and deserves to live. Rodney Munro, in an interview with The Canadian Press, has ended decades of silence and is speaking out in defence of Smith, 54, who sits on death row, and whose fate is now in the hands of Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer. “It’s because of Ron that I’m out and doing as well as I am,” Munro said. “Because of what he said in court, I didn’t get the death penalty. And because of
that I had a chance of actually getting out and trying to make something of myself.” On Aug. 4, 1982, Smith and Munro were hitchhiking in Montana when they caught a ride with Harvey Madman Jr. and Thomas Running Rabbit. Smith and Munro marched the men into the woods and shot and stabbed them to death. Both Canadians were charged with murder. Smith pleaded guilty to two charges of deliberate homicide and two charges of aggravated kidnapping in February 1983 and requested the death penalty. the associated press

B.C. black bear euthanized
A Saskatchewan fisherman looking to reel in a big one got more than he bargained for. The RCMP explosives disposal unit confirmed it was a type of homemade explosive device and was defused at the scene. Police are trying to find out how it got in the reservoir.
Conservation officers have euthanized a black bear that is believed to be the animal that ate human remains south of Kamloops, B.C. Environment Minister Terry Lake says the creature was trapped Friday and was put down over the weekend because bears remember food sources and this one had clearly lost its fear of humans.

Vatican condemns nun’s book on sex Controversy. Author takes on masturbation, homosexuality The Vatican on Monday sharply criticized a book on sexuality written by a prominent American nun, saying it contradicted church teaching on issues like masturbation, homosexuality and marriage and that its author had a “defective understanding” of Catholic theology. The Vatican’s orthodoxy office said the book, Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics, by Sister Margaret Farley, a member of the Sisters of Mercy religious order and emeritus professor of Christian ethics at Yale Divinity School, posed “grave harm” to the faithful. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said that in the 2006 book, Farley either ignored church teaching on core issues of human sexuality or treated it as merely one opinion among many. Farley said she never intended the book to reflect official

Catholic teaching. Rather, she said, she wrote it to explore sexuality via various religious traditions, theological resources and human experience. The Farley critique, signed by the American head of the congregation, Cardinal William Levada, comes amid the Vatican’s recent crackdown on the largest umbrella group of American sisters. The Vatican last month essentially imposed martial law on the Leadership Conference of Women Reli-
gious, accusing it of undermining church teaching and imposing certain “radical feminist themes” that were incompatible with Catholicism. The Vatican said Farley’s book “affirms positions that are in direct contradiction with Catholic teaching in the field of sexual morality.” Farley, for example, writes that masturbation doesn’t raise any moral problems and can actually help relationships. The Vatican asserted that according to church teaching “masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action.” Farley wrote that homosexuals and their activities should be respected. The Church holds that gays should be respected but that homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered.” On gay marriage, Farley said legal recognition of gay marriage can help transform the stigmatization of gays. Levada wrote back that approving gay marriage would not only signal approval of “deviant behaviour” but would obscure the value of traditional marriage. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Russian elections
N.J. Nets owner founds new political party Mikhail Prokhorov, a Russian tycoon who also contested the recent presidential election, has founded a political party. Prokhorov tweeted on Monday that the party would focus on the regional elections and help Russia’s professional elite make a foray into politics.
Prokhorov, who owns the New Jersey Nets basketball team, came in third in the March election, with nearly eight per cent of the vote. The 47-year-old has often been accused of being a Kremlin stooge, a claim he has denied. Prokhorov said, however, that he would not be a party member, and that the party would only have 500 members, the smallest membership allowed by the law. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Flood of Syrian refugees strains region’s stability Costly assistance. Jordan, Lebanon are not well positioned to accept thousands fleeing bloodshed, advocacy group says A Washington-based refugee advocacy group called on the world Monday to help Syrians who have fled their country’s turmoil, saying they are stretching the meagre resources of Jordan and Lebanon. Since the Syrian uprising began in March 2011, Jordan has taken in more than 110,000 refugees, and Lebanon 26,000, according to official figures. In Jordan, many refugees are being hosted in private homes, with Jordanian families providing them food and shelter. Refugees International (RI) warned in a written statement that the Syrian refugee crisis “may threaten the political stability of both Lebanon and Jordan, and the international community must scale up humanitarian and development aid to keep both countries on a firm footing.” With their “economies weak and their politics strained, neither country is well positioned to accept thousands of poor, vulnerable Syrians — and yet they must, and they have,” the group said. RI president Michel Gabaudan said considering the

Workers look for ground victims Nigeria. Officials suspect civilians near crash site killed Police dogs sniffed for dead bodies Monday in the rubble of buildings destroyed when an airliner crashed into them, killing all 153 aboard, as cranes lifted away heavy pieces of debris in the grisly aftermath of Nigeria’s worst air disaster in nearly two decades. Rescue officials said they fear many more people may have perished on the ground. The airline involved said an investigation had begun into the cause of Sunday’s crash. A Nigeria Red Cross report said 110 bodies had been recovered, with more being dug out from the rubble. A U.S. official said American citizens had been aboard the flight. The pilots reported engine trouble before the plane fell out of the sky on a clear afternoon, smashing
into businesses and crowded apartment buildings near Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The flight was bound for Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial centre, from Abuja, the capital. Two years ago, the same MD-83 lost engine power due to a bird strike. “The fear is that since it happened in a residential area, there may have been many people killed,” said Yushau Shuaib, a spokesman for Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency. Overnight, officials brought in a large crane from a local construction company to lift the tail of the aircraft and other debris, and brought blow torches to cut through the aircraft wreckage. The debris still smouldered Monday morning. Some emergency workers wore masks to try and protect themselves from the stench of the dead. Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan spent about 20 minutes looking at the

A radical Islamist sect has claimed responsibility for a suicide car bombing at a north Nigeria church that killed at least 15 people. In a statement sent to journalists Monday, a spokesman for the sect known as Boko Haram claimed Sunday’s attack in the city of Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi state. The statement also again threatened journalists in Nigeria over what the statement described biased stories about the sect’s actions. Sunday’s bombing wounded dozens of people, as the car bomb detonated as worshippers left an early morning church service. Boko Haram is waging an increasingly bloody sectarian fight with Nigeria’s weak central government. The sect is blamed for killing more than 550 people this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik in the courtroom in Oslo. stian lysberg solum/the associated press
Confessed mass killer Anders Breivik told a Norwegian court on Monday about numerous instances from his childhood and adolescence when he was supposedly slighted by Muslims, seeming to suggest that these incidents played a role in his radicalization. Breivik testified that when he was seven years old his friend’s Turkish father wrecked his bicycle, and at the age of 15 he was slapped by a Pakistani subway driver for riding on the outside of a subway car. The court sat stunned as Breivik, who has admitted to killing 77 people in a bomb and shooting rampage last summer in Norway, read a litany of such grievances from a sheet of paper covered in minuscule handwriting. In 1995 he said one of his close friends had been

Breivik also made reference to several past racist-motivated attacks in Norway, such as the murders of Arve Beheim Karlsen and Benjamin Hermansen, both young Norwegian men with foreign roots. • Hermansen’s murder in January 2001 had a poignant resonance in Norwegian society, triggering massive protests against right-wing violence. Michael Jackson even dedicated his 2001 album Invincible to Hermansen, who was 15 at the time of his death.
“threatened” by a KosovoAlbanian youth while waiting for the tram, and Breivik also heard that the little sister of one of his friends had been cut with a knife — an incident he knew nothing about but still ascribed to Muslims. The trial is expected to conclude on June 22. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

“For years, I suffered from unbearable stiffness and swelling in my hands”
“How I BEAT The Pain That Almost Ended My Career!” By Jaudon Sunde Medical Cosmetic Technician For nine long years, I lived in sheer agony. I suffered from inflammation and horrible stiffness in my hands. Unless you’ve experienced it for yourself, you can’t imagine how bad the pain really is. It nearly crippled me and almost ended my career. As a Medical Micropigmentation Specialist in Cleveland, Ohio, I need my hands for applying medical tattooing and permanent makeup for cancer patients, burn victims, and for people who need facial reconstruction. I was proud that in 2010, FOX 8 TV news viewers voted me the “Best Permanent Cosmetic Technician” in the area and I have consistently ranked in the top 2% nationally. But suddenly, my career was in danger. I was told that the intense precision of my work combined with the brutal cold winters in Ohio contributed to major stiffness and inflammation. So naturally, I tried just about every pain remedy and topical cream on the market. Nothing worked. The pain was getting worse and worse. So for all these years, I got by on a steady regimen of over-the-counter pills. The pain in my hands got so bad that I started taking pain relievers 2-3 times a day. And still my agony persisted. I was faced with a dreadful choice: Either have the painful surgery on my hands and be laid up for months...or cut my workload in half. I was between a rock and a hard place. I couldn’t afford to do either. I had to find a better way to get real relief. Then one day at dinner a friend of mine told me that inflammation is worse than I thought. “It’s called the ‘secret killer,’ and for good reason,” he said. “Left alone, it can ravage your arteries, chew up nerve cells in your brain, and lead to all kinds of age-related ailments.
“The good news is that researchers at the University of Arizona have now confirmed that the Nopal cactus — found in the Sonoran Desert in the southwest U.S. — has tremendous power. It can help fight off harmful inflammation without risky drugs. And it can help reduce the pain caused by inflammation. “It turns out that the fruit of this plant is loaded with a special concentration of something called a ‘bioflavonoid.’ It’s a super-powerful antioxidant that scientists believe to be perhaps the best natural anti-inflammatory agent on the planet. And it’s proven to reduce inflammation and detoxify your body naturally.” He then spoke the words that would change my life. “I think all you need to do is try a fruit drink.” I was shocked! How is an ordinary fruit drink going to end my misery? “Well, it’s not an ordinary fruit drink. It’s called Nopalea, a breakthrough wellness drink that contains these incredible bioflavonoids I told you about. Drink it and you’ll be amazed how great you’re going to feel.” I was skeptical, but I was also desperate. He brought me a bottle and I took a sip. I was shocked that it actually tasted fruity and delicious. I really enjoyed drinking it. In just 5-6 days, an amazing thing happened. I started to feel much better. My stiffness loosened up and I moved around better than I had in years with no pain. I was over joyed! The inflammation in my hands showed dramatic improvement. I kept taking 3 ounces of Nopalea twice a day and after about 30 days, I could perform my duties 95% pain free! Even the doctors I work with were amazed at my amazing improvement. I no longer need surgery. I am busier than ever before and I love it! I also found out that the betalains in Nopalea aid my body in healing by surrounding unhealthy cells and draining them of toxic waste.
Jaudon Sunde, Micropigmentation Specialist, says that “Nopalea has been a life-saver in every sense of the word.”*
But don’t believe me. You must try this drink for yourself. If you’re suffering with the same inflammation and pain that I did, you owe it to yourself to get real relief. Once you try Nopalea, I know you’ll agree that it’s the best thing that’s happened to you in a long, long time. TRY A FREE BOTTLE! In fact, the manufacturers of Nopalea are so confident that they’ve agreed to give the readers of this newspaper a special introductory offer. But hurry – they only have a limited number of FREE bottles to give away. And when they’re gone, they’re gone forever. So do yourself a favor and give your body the great relief it needs. American denied entry to Israel over email dispute Airport security. Tourist suspected of being involved in pro-Palestinian activism at Israeli airport When Sandra Tamari arrived at Israel’s international airport, she received an unusual request: A security agent pushed a computer screen in front of her, connected to Gmail and told her to “log in.” The agent, suspecting Tamari was involved in proPalestinian activism, wanted to inspect her private email account for incriminating evidence. The 42-year-old
American of Palestinian descent refused and was swiftly expelled from the country. Tamari’s experience is not unique. In a cyber-age twist on Israel’s vaunted history of airport security, the country has begun to force incoming travellers deemed suspicious to open personal email accounts for inspection, visitors say. Targeting mainly Muslims or Arabs, the practice appears to be aimed at rooting out visitors who have histories of pro-Palestinian activism, and in recent weeks, has led to the expulsion of at least three American women. It remains unclear how widespread the practice is. However, asked about Tamari’s claims, the Shin Bet security agency confirmed
she had been interrogated and said its agents acted in accordance with the law. Israel has a long history of using ethnic profiling, calling it a necessary evil resulting from its bitter experience with terrorist attacks. Arab travellers and anyone else seen as a risk are often subjected to intense questioning and invasive inspections, including strip searches. The security procedures appear to be getting stricter: recent searches of journalists at official events have been invasive enough to create a series of mini uproars and walkouts — a situation that has dovetailed with increasing concerns that the government is trying to stifle dissent. the associated press

Facebook. Site testing kid-friendly access Though Facebook bans children under 13, millions of them have profiles on the site by lying about their age. The company is now testing ways to allow those kids to participate without needing to lie. This would likely be under parental supervision, such as by connecting children’s accounts to their parents’ accounts. Such information collection is central to Facebook. Every photo or status update a kid posts on Facebook could count as information collection. Many companies consider the parental-consent requirement too burdensome, so they simply ban all children under 13 instead. There are an estimated 7.5 million kids under 13 on Facebook, out of more than 900

Air Canada shareholders OK airline’s executive pay plan Looking low-cost. Company still focusing on discount carrier at annual meeting Air Canada’s top executive says the launch of a new low-cost carrier remains a top priority for the airline, as it grapples to make profound changes to the way it does business. “We need to participate in this segment of the market in one manner or another,” Air Canada chief executive Calin Rovinescu said Monday in a speech to shareholders. He said Air Canada is sensitive to the views of its pilots and wants to make sure that whatever time frame it takes with the low-cost carrier is consistent with the discussions in the arbitration process set up by the federal government. The pilots are one of two major labour groups at Air Canada without a collective agreement. The other union is the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which represents repair and ramp crews.
Members of the Air Canada Pilots Association march in protest in front of the company’s annual meeting in Calgary, Monday. The pilots have been without a contract for more than a year. Jeff McIntosh/the canadian press
Both disputes will be resolved by a mediator ordered by the federal government, which brought in back-to-work legislation after Air Canada locked out the pilots and the Machinists announced they would go on strike.
Shareholders overwhelmingly approved a new policy on executive compensation while Air Canada pilots held an information picket outside the downtown hotel. The largely symbolic resolution passed with 91.85 per cent approval.
The main opposition came from Air Canada Pilots Association president Paul Strachan. He argued giving compensation increases to top executives while extolling austerity to employees is hypocritical. the canadian press

Surviving your best friend’s wedding

It is officially wedding season. Both the time of year and my mid-to-late-twenty-something Jessica Napier status mean that my once barren metronews.ca/shesays mailbox is now overflowing with invitations, save-the-dates and thank-you cards from betrothed friends and family members. As spring rolls into summer, bridal banter seems to be at the top of the agenda at every social gathering. Everyone I know is attending, participating or initiating a wedding in the coming months. In fact, I am taking my inaugural run at being a bridesmaid this upcoming weekend. Historically, bridesmaids and groomsmen have some interesting origins. Once upon a time, Roman law required that each wedding involve 10 witnesses dressed in similar clothing. The superstitious rationale behind this tradition was that the co-ordinating men and women would confuse any evil spirits present at the wedding and make it difficult to identify the actual bride and Bridesmaid 101 groom. Today, modern bridesmaids’ Wedding-minutia duties are a bit more demanding than posing in matching gowns madness can make a to ward off bad luck. Some friends will get married on weekdays, out of province or internationally; they’ll want multiple ceremonies, elaborate engagement parties, three separate bridal showers and week-long bachelorette getaways. I know what you’re thinking, oh that won’t happen to me; my friends are just so easygoing. But be warned, even your chilled out bestie might have an inner bridezilla lurking inside of her. As a bridesmaid, you might be expected to fork over hundreds if not thousands of dollars on plane tickets, hotel rooms, outfits and alterations, gifts, hair, makeup, nails, and other items all in an effort to recreate the bride-to-be’s Pinterest wedding vision board. On the big day, your laborious bridesmaid experience will culminate in 24 hours of stressful jubilation. You’ll smile gracefully at the photographer, in that pre-selected shade of lilac lipstick that you’ll never wear again, because you are truly happy for your friend and because in just a few hours, it’ll all be over. she says...

Robert Pattinson takes an epic limo ride around New York City in Cosmopolis. HANDOUT
The cast returns to where it all began
Disney’s sci-fi fantasy bomb cost somewhere between a squillion and a bajillion dollars to make and sell. So where did all that loot go? The screenplay by writer/ director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, WALLE) and co-writers Mark Andrews and Michael Chabon is far too faithful to Burroughs’ ancient babble, while at the same time being deaf to modern interests. Such things as humour, thrills and genuine jeopardy are seriously lacking here. John Carter, a peace-loving space traveller from the Wild West (played by Canada’s Taylor Kitsch), is smothered by CGI and bad dialogue as he journeys from Civil Warera Arizona to Mars, here called Barsoom. On this red planet, the Tharks are at odds with each other and apparently at war with the bloodthirsty Zodangans. And what of the Heliumites? Will peacenik Carter stay and fight? John Carter shares more with a Dr. Seuss cartoon than it does with any self-respecting live-action interstellar adventure.

Last year Robert Pattinson, Paul Giamatti and homegrown stars Emily Hampshire, Sarah Gadon and Kevin Durand gathered in Toronto to shoot Cosmop-
olis, a dark drama for director David Cronenberg. On Monday the cast reunited with their director for a press conference I hosted at a downtown Toronto hotel in advance of the movie opening in theatres on Friday. The tone of the conference was light, and the camaraderie of the cast obvious. Here are some of the highlights: “I don’t know what I was more excited about,” said Hampshire, “having David bend over me and show Robert how to get a prostate exam, or Rob bending over me and getting one.”
Quoted
“You don’t have to choose,” quipped Cronenberg. Cronenberg also offered up some tongue-in-cheek advice for filmmakers. “I use a little Apple program called iDirector. A little green light goes on if it is OK, or a red light if you need to do another take. It’s pretty straightforward. You can all use it.” Later the director commented on why he wanted his actors to speak the lines of the script exactly as written. “I don’t want the actors to be screenwriters,” he said, they’re not designed for that.” “There were no rewrites,” Pattinson chimes in. “Normally that is the first thing you think about as an actor. And you are so used to just changing it the whole time, on every single movie, that with this, once you suddenly got to the idea that you are not changing anything, the script is fine, it’s
you that are the problem, at least you knew one thing.” Pattinson has a tour-deforce scene at the end of the film, a 22-page two-hander opposite Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti. The Sideways star took a quick break from shooting Rock of Ages in Miami to appear in Cosmopolis. “Fortunately the other movie wasn’t terribly demanding on me,” Giamatti joked. “It was a musical that I was doing and I didn’t have to sing or dance. I just had to show up and crack jokes.” “I was panicked about it,” he says of his quick turnaround in Toronto. “This thing was intimidating. The length and the language. So I bothered everyone on the other movie to read this thing with me. Fortunately Malin Ackerman made a great Rob Pattinson. “She was fantastic. I was very disappointed when actually I got here and it was Rob.”

Starz network says it is ending its highly successful Spartacus saga next season. In an unusual move announced Monday, Starz will conclude this action-adventure series while it’s still a big hit, and after logging only three seasons (or four, counting a “prequel” season). This season the series drew six million viewers, an enormous number for a paid subscription channel. Creator and executive producer Steven S. DeKnight promises a “stunningly epic” final season. The series stars Liam McIntyre. McIntyre took over the role from Andy Whitfield, who starred the first season, then withdrew due to illness. He died of cancer in September 2011. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Imagining a genre
Cosmatos blends reality, imagination As a teenager, Panos Cosmatos says he became obsessed by the vivid posters and VHS box art of science-fiction releases, and that that sense of giddy anticipation was key to the conception of Beyond the Black Rainbow. “I read an interview
with Kurt Cobain where he talked about growing up wanting to hear punk music, but the only records available at his local store were by Black Sabbath,” says Cosmatos. “So he’d listen to Black Sabbath while reading about punk music and imagining Black Sabbath, and it was like this third kind of music got created in the process. “I always liked the idea of that,” he adds.

Going ‘Beyond’ the typical horror fare Feature debut. Director blends elements of horror and sci-fi to create a wildly original film Adam Nayman

There won’t be a more visually accomplished Canadian film in 2012 than Beyond the
Black Rainbow, a hallucinatory sci-fi horror hybrid that’s set in an institution yet looks as if it was filmed in another direction. But the production actually originated in Vancouver, where writer-director Panos Cosmatos — son of the famed Greek/Italian director George P. Cosmatos — channelled the DVD royalties from his father’s 1993 hit Tombstone into the budget for his own wildly ambitious feature debut. “I wanted to make some-

thing that didn’t already exist and also something that I really wanted to see myself,” says Cosmatos, and he surely succeeded on the first count: with its eerily closed-in setting, darkly mysterious characters and increasingly surreal atmosphere, Beyond the Black Rainbow feels wildly original. At the same time, the film feels redolent of a particular era in North American science-fiction moviemaking. It’s no surprise that the story is set in the early 1980s, since
that was also the time that directors like John Carpenter and David Cronenberg — both of whom feel like influences here — ruled the genre-movie roost. “I wanted to avoid it feeling too referential to anything in particular,” says Cosmatos. “I actually went out of my way to not rewatch movies that might be subconsciously influencing me, so that if they were in there it would be in a more abstract or distorted way.”

SNOW WHITE GETS SERIOUS In her new film Snow White and The Huntsman, Twilight actress Kristen Stewart plays a dark and violent version of the classic fairy tale heroine. She’s up for a sword fight, knows how to throw a punch and lead an army of men to fight her enemies. But off screen she also had to conquer a long-term personal issue.

Kristen Stewart isn’t scared of blood sucking vampires or monstrous werewolves. She’s not even put off by drinking her own blood. But there is one thing she is scared of ... horses. As a youngster she broke and dislocated her elbow falling off a horse and has been reluctant to get back in the saddle ever since. But much to Stewart’s dismay, her Snow White character in Snow White and the Huntsman is no damsel in distress and spends most of the film on horse back as she escapes the clutches of the Evil Queen. Metro spoke to Sam Dent, Stewart’s horse riding instructor, to find out how she finally overcame her fear of falling. Overcoming fear “I could tell she was nervous from day one. But that’s only natural for someone scarred by a bad fall to let

their nerves get the best of them, but there isn’t much you can actually do to help other than reassure them,” Dent tells Metro. Taking the reins Horse riding is an exercise in itself and you’ll need to be fighting fit if you’re going to give it your all ... and not fall off the horse. As an exercise, the effort required to remain seated in an upright position has both cardio and toning benefits, especially in the gallop. But unlike most sports, you’re not in control. “The horse — a very powerful creature — is,” says Dent. “If they don’t want to do something, you need to be physically and mentally strong to handle them.”
Lucky for Dent, Stewart was a keen learner “Kristen was fully concentrated on conquering her fears. Her and Rusty, her horse (they got on great, by the way) would start by spending 15 to 20 minutes in the enclosed arena. Once she got comfortable, we would go into canter (a three time gait with the horse placing one leg, then two together and then the remaining leg on the ground) in the open field. It’s funny because when she was on her horse, her nerves didn’t show and she never did anything reckless. She was listening and acting like she was confident, even though she wasn’t.” Being a Bare devil Another challenge for Stewart was learning how to ride bareback — that is, without a saddle. Removing the saddle is a risk, as it requires the rider to exert a higher level of balance and coordination in order to remain on the horse. The

absence of a supporting tree and padding between the rider’s seat bones and the horse’s spine means it’s not exactly the most comfortable riding style. “Bareback riding is very fatiguing as you no longer have the saddle to keep you steady” adds Dent. Thankfully, Stewart was fit enough to cope, thanks to
her stunt training with the ‘boys,’ co-stars Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin and co. What did Dent think of her pupil’s overall performance? “Kristen was completely knackered by the end of filming as she had taken up so much extra work physically. The actual riding she did was pretty basic but she’s a good rider.” But what about the Huntsman’s riding skills? We know Chris Hemsworth has the advantage of an action hero past, but did this help him ride a horse? “Chris was a natural. I just needed to bring him back up to speed because even though he’d ridden before, his style was a little too ‘cowboyish.’ I had to straighten him up a bit,” reveals Dent. Want to know a fun fact? Hemsworth’s horse was called Pinocchio. Not what you’d expect a hunter’s horse to be called, but cute.

New ‘smart’ drugs deliver powerful poisons directly to cancer cells while leaving healthy ones alone. istock photo
Cancer breakthrough Research. Cancer treatments grow more high-tech: ‘Smart bomb’ drugs, immune boosters are seeing success New research shows a sharp escalation in the weapons race against cancer, with several high-tech approaches long dreamed of but not possible or successful until now. At a weekend conference of more than 30,000 cancer specialists, scientists reported: -New “smart” drugs that deliver powerful poisons directly to cancer cells while leaving healthy ones alone. -A new tool that helps the immune system attack a broad range of cancer types. -Treatments aimed at new
genes and cancer pathways, plus better tests to predict which patients will benefit from them. “I see major advances being made in big diseases” such as breast and prostate cancers, said Dr. Richard Pazdur, cancer drug chief at the federal Food and Drug Administration, which on Wednesday announced a new policy intended to speed breast cancer drugs to the market. The field continues to move toward more precise treatments with fewer side effects and away from old-style chemotherapy that was “like dropping a bomb on the body,” he said. In fact, an emerging class of “smart bombs” was one of the most hopeful developments reported at the meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
These are two-punch weapons that combine substances called antibodies, which bond with specific cancer cells, and toxins that are too potent to be given by themselves. A chemical link holds them together until they attach to a tumour cell, releasing the poison inside it and killing the cell. “This is a classic example of the magic bullet concept” first proposed more than 100 years ago but only now possible with advances in technology, said Dr. Louis Weiner, director of Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. “The antibody basically targets this toxic drug right to the cancer cell and places it inside the cancer cell where the drug can do its damage” without harming healthy cells nearby,” he said. the associated press

Our children got an “F” in active play. That’s the mark Canadian kids received on the 2012 report card issued by Active Healthy Kids Canada. Chicken Sauté. Will you cross the road for Peach This easy one-skillet meal is ready in minutes healthier, pricier chicken? lunch rush
Stephanie Dickison food@metronews.ca
Happy, healthy chickens cost more, but using freerange birds free of antibiotics doesn’t guarantee tastier meat. At $9, two chicken fingers with one side is a pricey snack. The unbelievably moist meat is timid, as is the coating. Sauces help — purple plum is inspired, while chunky, watery house gravy imbues a smoky essence. The quarter roast chicken with one side ($12) has a similar problem — moist meat, but tame flavour and skin that appears browned but isn’t crisp. A small scoop of delectable potato salad or unwieldy napa cabbage coleslaw, slick with oil, is served on the side. Or actually, on the top. Eating in, your meal is presented on a black metal Star Trek Enterprise-like tray. Who can eat like this? I take everything down, as do

There’s no lack of summer activities for teens and young adults but here’s a summer project I’d like to add to their list. And it comes with a carrot attached — ten $1,000 scholarships. That’s worth giving up a bit of gaming, TV or chat time to enter. The annual scholarships are provided by Brandes Investment Partners, a mutual fund company, (brandesscholarship.ca) for those 16-22 years old – entry deadline is July 20. The warm-up is a financial personality quiz called The Money Factor. Though I’m a tad past the age of 22 I took it and discovered I’m on the boring side financially. The quiz takes about five

The quiz is fun and quite interesting with youthfriendly questions about coin tosses and what to do with found money. At the end you’re encouraged to apply for one of the ten scholarships. But it’s not just easy money because applicants have to submit a 250-word essay about their money personality and three things learned from the quiz. What I particularly like about the Brandes initiative is that it tilts toward investing. The focus on money education these days tends to be about debt, credit, saving and spending — important arrows in everyone’s financial quiver. But I believe knowledge about investing is the real

Will death kill a home’s price? Fun and frugal
Leslie Scorgie money@metronews.ca Twitter: @Lesleyscorgie
A few weeks ago I shifted my home buying criteria away from the over-heated inner-city detached house market to Plan B; an innercity condo with high rental income potential for the future. I plan to live in the property for a year until I find a more affordable detached home for my primary residence, at which point I’d rent the condo out as an investment property. Using my new criteria, on Friday afternoon, I found ‘the one’. I walked into the home and was captivated by its character, charm, views, and layout. Better yet, the price is discounted to the market and the location couldn’t be better. Feeling good vibes, I sat down with my realtor
Sunday afternoon to make an offer.... until we were interrupted by a phone call from the seller’s realtor who disclosed that there had been a death by suicide on the property only a few months prior. This explained the discounted price, request for quick possession and the long length of time on the market. I was stunned and saddened to hear of this terrible tragedy; so shocked, in fact, that my emotions took over and rather than being my usual frugal self I couldn’t go through with making the offer that same day. I sought advice from close friends and family members to see what they would do if they were in my shoes. Their opinions are split 50/50. The first group said to steer clear of the property because the local rumour mill would never forget the incident; thus resale ability and rental income potential could be jeopardized. The other group suggested I put my feelings/ superstitions aside and

scoop up the deeply discounted property. Real estate disclosure laws require sellers to disclose any fact that could be material to a buyer’s decision to buy the property. Facts about the property are considered material if their disclosure would affect the value or desirability of the property. Is a death by suicide a material fact that affects the value or desirability of a property? I believe it is. But I also believe that for some buyers it matters a lot whereas for others, they don’t care. The lesson in all this is that there are material considerations that go beyond a simple home inspection of any property. Foreclosure and death, for instance, are not structural issues. But they can significantly lower the price of a property. From a buyer’s perspective, this represents an opportunity to save thousands. But, selling it down the road could be a challenge. By questioning realtors and doing independent research, buyers can determine if there are expensive disclosure issues. I’m not certain my love of this particular home, nor the tens of thousands of dollars in savings, outweighs my sad feelings towards the tragic incident. I might have to walk away from the deal.

What’s a poor boy to do? Chivalry. Dating when you’re cash strapped Sara Dimerman
life@metronews.ca
You would think that in today’s liberated world, men wouldn’t be expected to pay for every dinner or coffee date. Despite evolution amongst the sexes, my bet is that if you were to take a poll, most women would say that they expect to be treated — on the first few dates, for sure. They’d probably say that if their date suggested splitting the bill, that he was either cheap or not into her. Gone are the days that women stayed at home to raise kids and men were the breadwinners. Today most women, young and older, work as many hours as men and some even
earn more than the opposite sex. So, why then do women expect to be treated? Perhaps this is our last ditch attempt to hold onto a thread of chivalry. Most women (especially those younger) aren’t offended if their dates don’t walk on the side closest to the street or open her car door first. In fact, many prefer to be equal partners. But often not in the finance department. So, what’s a poor boy to do? What if he’s working in a retail department store for minimum wage, paying rent and car insurance and barely has enough money left for groceries? What if he’s widowed, living on a fixed income and careful about what he spends? Does this mean that he’s destined to sit at home with only the television as a companion? What if he’s a really good catch in so many other ways? Doesn’t he deserve a chance at love too? Sure he does, but sorry to say men, fair or no fair, chances are that you’re going to have
to go through your piggy bank for some loonies and toonies — even if it’s just to meet a prospective mate over coffee. Because no matter how liberated women are, men are still expected to take the lead when it comes to handing over the loot on a first, and maybe even second or third date. Here are some tips (not the money kind), for both gents and ladies: FOR THE GENTS: Speak up If you’re legitimately cash strapped, then speak up. Timing is key though. I’d suggest not sharing your financial position prior to the first date, because no matter how kind and caring she is, this may be a turn off. She might even suggest you find a better job, or a job period. Wait until the end of your first, or if you can afford it — second date, and then let her know the truth. Share that you

are in between jobs, living on a fixed income, having to pay child support or whatever the truth is, and ask how she feels about occasionally (or always) going dutch on your dates. Let her know that you not dining and dazzling her with expensive dates has nothing to do with how you’re feeling towards her, but rather related to your financial position. FOR THE LADIES: Listen with concern If he has the courage to tell you the truth, acknowledge
what he’s saying and share how you feel. If you are used to being dined and dazzled, let him know this and share whether you are interested in continuing seeing him under the circumstances. If he’s a really great guy, despite being cash strapped, consider whether his financial position is all important. Is financial success and independence high on your priority list? Are you willing to pay your own way in order to continue seeing him? Do
you make more than enough to support both of you? Would you like to suggest occasionally paying for him too? Vacation alert: when time away means more than play Should I stay or go? How to tell when you need a vacation
Your time off
Julia west
Kerry Patterson, co-author of Crucial Conversations, reminds us that we must “define vacation” to ourselves and to our bosses.
Vacations: We always want one, but sometimes we actually need one. Here’s our rundown of telltale signs that you’re in need of some well-deserved time off.
“Talk about what it truly means to take time off. If you are required to take the office with you in the form of emails and conference calls, you never truly leave the office.”
Metro World News in Philadelphia
You are less productive This may come as no surprise, but many Type A personalities tend to work without vacation — and without realizing that it can affect their productivity. “If you notice that you need to take a lot of breaks to accomplish work, that is a sign that the current demands on you are exceeding your resources,” says
After you get the time off, don’t spend it answering emails from a beach.
Amy Przeworski, assistant professor in psychology at Case Western Reserve University. Your attitude is poor
Sometimes employees too easily confuse who gets to call the legal shots. Believing that their job is an entitlement, some workers try to take the law into their own hands. They are often mistaken. This is the story of one employee who learned this lesson the hard way. Working from his home in Alberta for a Vancouver based software firm, Dean Ernst quickly wore out his welcome. Hired as a vicepresident of operations, Ernst and his employer agreed that he could work from home on a temporary basis with the intention that he would move to Vancouver in the future. Ernst interpreted their agreement to mean that, as a work-from-home
employee, he could work from anywhere that he wanted. Ernst owned a home in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where he planned to later move for his retirement. However, Ernst and wife decided to permanently move to Mexico earlier than they had first anticipated. Ernst flew to his home in Mexico and satisfied himself that there were no obstacles to working for his employer there instead of from Alberta. The problem is that he did not mention any of this to them. Ernst later called his boss and explained that he was moving to Mexico and that, as a work-from-home employee, the manner in which he performed his

job would not change. His employer disagreed and felt betrayed that Ernst was not asking for permission and had already made up his mind. Shortly after, he was fired. At a recent trial, Ernst argued that he was entitled to work from home, wherever that may be, and that he did not require his employer’s consent. However, the court disagreed. It inferred from the language in Ernst’s contract that the intention was that he would work from Canada. As a result, when he moved to Mexico without permission, he breached the terms of his own agreement. Even as a work-fromhome employee, Ernst simply lost sight of who was entitled to call the shots. When this occurs, an employer may be able to treat the employee’s actions as insubordination, or worse, as Ernst learned — cause for his own dismissal. Daniel A. You dream about quitting “This is obviously a sign that you are dissatisfied with your job,” says Przeworski. “But before you jump ship, try taking a vacation or a day off to see if maybe you just needed a break and some self-care instead of a new position.” The last thing you want is a permanent vacation.

Eakins decides ‘it’s just not time yet’ to leave Toronto AHL. Believed to be ready to step into the big leagues, Marlies coach inks deal to stay in Leafs organization Dallas Eakins signed a threeyear contract extension with the Toronto Marlies Monday, a decision that reflects both the loyalty and the smarts of a coach who many observers believe could command an NHL job right now. “I want to be part of bringing success to the big club (Leafs), my family is happy here (Toronto) and it’s just not time to move on yet,” Eakins said as his Marlies practised at the Ricoh Coliseum for Thursday’s Game 3 of the Calder Cup final against Norfolk. Under the agreement, Eakins can effectively entertain an NHL coaching post after the first year. Worked out in principle over the past few months with Marlies general manager/Leafs assistant Dave Nonis, the deal includes flexibility for Eakins to

take an NHL job beginning in the 2013-14 season. The three-year term, though, brings into question the Leafs’ coaching situation and how Eakins may or may not fit into it. Leafs GM Brian Burke and Nonis debated hiring Eakins as the replacement for Ron Wil-
son before Burke decided on a three-year contract for Randy Carlyle. At the time, Burke reasoned that Eakins had not yet coached under the intensity of a playoff series. Eakins was not happy with the decision, but understood and supported it completely. torstar news service

Jays go for speed at baseball draft The Toronto Blue Jays opted for speed with their first pick in the 2012 baseball draft Monday. The club used the 17th overall selection to take outfielder D.J. Davis. The 18-year-old high schooler from Wiggins, Miss., was considered by many experts the fastest player available and a potential future leadoff hitter. The Jays also had the 22nd pick and selected Duke University reliever Marcus Stroman. The 21-year-old from Medford, N.Y., has drawn comparisons to former major league reliever Tom Gordon. The Houston Astros selected 17-year-old shortstop Carlos Correa with the No. 1 pick, making him the highest selection ever to come from Puerto Rico. “This means a lot,” said Correa, in attendance at the draft site at MLB Network studios. “We’ve got a lot of good players there.” It was the first time Houston had the top pick in the draft since 1992, when the Astros selected Phil Nevin — passing on a young shortstop named Derek Jeter, who went five spots later to the Yankees. the canadian press/ the associated press

Lawyers denied defence witness in Clemens trial The judge in the Roger Clemens perjury trial ruled Monday that defence lawyers can’t call Rep. Darrell Issa as a witness. Issa is chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the panel that Clemens allegedly lied to in 2008 when he denied taking performance-enhancing drugs. Issa, a California Republican, wasn’t chairman at the time, and he had criticized the committee for holding the hearing on drugs in baseball. Defence lawyers hoped his testimony would help call into question the hearing’s legitim-

acy, and sent a subpoena to the committee to try to compel his appearance as a witness. Lawyers for the committee filed a motion to quash the subpoena. They said his appearance at the trial should be barred under the Constitution’s speech or debate clause, which protects elected officials from being questioned in a lawsuit about their legislative work. In granting that motion, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said he didn’t have to invoke the speech or debate clause. He said that relying on Issa to make such comments again on the stand amounted to speculation. The judge said that if he did allow Issa to testify, he would have to let the government call other lawmakers who supported the hearing — dragging out the trial that’s already in its eighth week. “You’d end up with a swearing match,” Walton said. Walton also said that Issa might not be that great a witness for the defence, after prosecutor Steve Durham pointed out Issa’s comment after the hearing that he didn’t doubt that Clemens had perjured himself. the associated press NBA

‘Instincts’ kicking in for Argonauts’ Durie Argos receiver Andre Durie makes a catch against the Lions last September. Carlos Osorio/torstar news service file
CFL. Former running back starting to understand intricacies of receiving position after two year crash course Andre Durie is finally comfortable being a receiver. The five-foot-10, 197-pound Durie joined the Toronto Argonauts in 2007 as a free agent after his college career as a running back at York University. Two years ago, then Argos head coach Jim Barker moved Durie to slotback and it has taken him that long to learn how to be patient running pass routes and letting them develop rather than rely on the quickness, explosiveness and instinct that served Durie so well in the backfield. “Being a running back you’re full of intensity to get the ball and just go as fast as you can,” Durie said following Monday’s training camp practice. “As a receiver, you need to know how to gauge yourself and I struggled with that a little bit understanding how to run routes and the intrica-
cies involved in it. “I think the instincts of being a receiver are starting to come now for me. I feel I can see things develop before they happen, I can feel zones and know where to sit. It’s starting to clear up.” The move certainly wasn’t unprecedented as in the 1990s former Argos head coach Don Matthews moved Mike ‘Pinball’ Clemons from the backfield to slotback. The shifty Clemons adjusted immediately to the new role and helped Toronto win consecutive Grey Cup titles in 1996-’97.
But it wasn’t an immediate transition for Durie, who spent a lot of time before practice perfecting the art of running precise routes and often stayed late catching passes from quarterbacks. Then again, hard work is nothing new to Durie. Early in the 2005 season at York, Durie suffered a horrific knee injury that prompted many to question if he’d ever walk normally again let alone resume playing football. He spent all of 2006 rehabbing his knee and signed as a free agent with the Argos.
A hand injury suffered in an exhibition game forced Durie to spend the first half of the 2008 season on the injured list before returning to Toronto’s lineup as a backup tailback and special-teams performer. Two years later, Durie faced the challenge of having to learn a new position. Durie has fit in well as a receiver, having registered 54 catches in each of the last two seasons. He posted a careerhigh 665 receiving yards last year to finish as Toronto’s second-leading receiver.
ceiver Jason Barnes to prevent quarterback Ricky Ray from connecting for a long TD. It was just another big play that the six-foot-one, 210-pound junior from Bethany College has been making, both at last week’s rookie camp and now at the main camp this week. It would be easy to write off the youngster because he’s fighting for a spot against players with far more experience, including several
rookies. But Argos head coach Scott Milanovich, and defensive coordinator Chris Jones have definitely liked what they’ve seen so far from the speedy defensive back. “Nobody out here has got a lock down on their jobs,” Jones said after practice at the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus. “The best guy plays. We’re grading everybody.”

Heat could get boost from Bosh for Game 5 vs. Celtics NBA. Star forward has made ‘significant progress’ ahead of pivotal East-final clash
Sharapova survives in Paris Maria Sharapova returns a shot to Klara Zakopalova at the French Open on Monday in Paris. After breezing through her first three matches, second-seeded Sharapova got stymied as much by her opponent as her own shaky play, to say nothing of the windy, damp conditions Monday at Roland Garros. She persevered in a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2 victory over 44th-ranked Zakopalova in a match that took three hours, 11 minutes. Clive Brunskill/Getty Images
Chris Bosh has been telling the Miami Heat that he’s ready to play. The Heat seem ready to listen. And Game 5 of the Eastern Conference final — which wouldn’t be lacking for drama with Boston and Miami tied at two games apiece — may have another significant layer of intrigue. Bosh’s status was upgraded to “day-to-day” by Heat coach Erik Spoelstra on Monday, the first deviation by the team after more than three weeks of simply saying his absence was indefinite because of a strained lower abdominal muscle. Spoelstra wouldn’t guarantee that Bosh plays in Game 5, but opened the door to there at least being a chance of the allstar forward suiting up. “He’ll get a vote,” Spoelstra said of how much Bosh’s input will matter in determining when he takes the

floor. “Again, everything is heightened right now. These are extreme circumstances. Everybody will be involved in the decision, if and when it happens. But you always have to take the player’s opinion with a grain of salt. They all say they’re ready.... He said he was ready 10 days ago.” The Celtics were ready for
him then, too. So if Tuesday is the Bosh comeback night, Boston will not be caught off-guard. “We don’t have to do anything different,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. “We’ve prepared every game like Bosh is going to play. And eventually, he will.” the associated press

Since Chris Bosh arrived with LeBron James to play alongside Dwyane Wade in Miami in July 2010, the Heat have won 72 per cent (116-45) of their games with him in the lineup. Without Bosh the Heat have won only 52 per cent of the time, going 12-11.
