Obese dad on hunger strike after court removes kids Children’s Aid Society. Man says he’s being discriminated against because of his weight JOE LOFARO
joe.lofaro@metronews.ca
An Ottawa man who lost custody of his two kids partly due to being overweight said he will go on a hunger strike Friday on Parliament Hill to strike back at the Children’s Aid Society (CAS). “I’m not a perfect man — I’m not saying I am — but I want a single chance at raising my children,” the man told Metro Wednesday. In an Ontario Superior Court ruling Wednesday, Justice Martin James said the 38-year-old’s boys, aged four and six, would be given up for adoption and live apart from each other.

His weight was mentioned several times in the 33-page ruling and was a “major factor” in the judge’s decision, the man said. He weighs about 360 pounds and was at 520 pounds at his heaviest in 2009. “(The father’s) weight loss regime is itself a full-time job. So is parenting two high-needs children. One will inevitably have to give ground to the other,” the ruling said. The ruling also claimed that he played online video games for hours on end and tends to be “combative when people don’t agree with him.” The man cannot be identified under the Child and Family Services Act. “I’m going to go on an international stage and expose this and my children will know what their father’s done for them,” the father said. “I hope I get to appeal and disprove all of Legendary bluesman John Mayall took the stage Thursday night ahead of the Robert Cray Band, opening the TD this.”

Police probe. Fourth man Nightmare. Toddler in arrested in attemptedcritical condition after murder investigation being struck by minivan Ottawa police have arrested a fourth man in connection with a stabbing in January. Abdul El-Enzi, 24, was wanted by police after a Jan. 11 stabbing incident in the Walkley Road and Conroy Road area. A man was stabbed multiple times and was treated at the Ottawa Hospital for serious injuries. El-Enzi was arrested without incident in the west end of the city. An additional possession-of-crack-cocaine
charge was also laid. He was on the Top Five Most Wanted by Guns and Gangs list. T h r e e other men, all aged 20, were arrested in January following the same inAbdul El-Enzi cident and appeared in court Jan. 13. NOURAN ABDELLATIF/FOR METRO
A two-year-old girl is in critical condition at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario after she was struck by a minivan on Cymbeline Drive in Nepean. The girl suffered life-threatening head, chest, and internal injuries, paramedics say. Ottawa paramedics found the girl unconscious and lying on the street, after responding to a 911 call at 2:27 p.m. Thursday. Ottawa police shut down all intersections from the accident
scene to the hospital for the ambulance. The girl partially regained consciousness on arrival at the hospital, said J.P. Trottier, spokesperson for the Ottawa paramedics. “She regained a little bit of movement and was crying at hospital,” he said. “But it’s too early to tell whether she will recover from those injuries,” Trottier added. “They’re very serious injuries.” METRO
Gallery’s nemesis painting the wrong picture: Owner Bylaw infractions. Dozens of anonymous complaints could shut it down for good JESSICA SMITH

The owner of a Hintonburg art gallery is worried: He thinks the anonymous neighbour who has launched dozens of bylaw complaints against him may finally have found a way to shut him down. The Patrick John Mills Contemporary Fine Art Gallery, located in Mills’ house in Hintonburg, is closed this weekend because bylaw officials have told him his home business should be zoned commercial instead of residential. “Actually, it is my home,” Mills said Thursday. A commercial designation would mean higher property taxes, commercial mortgage rate and about $100,000 of fire-code retrofits, he said. He would either have to change the gallery dramatically or shut it down.

Mills holds art events attended by a dozen to 200 people, which are always over before 11 p.m., he said. However, the bylaws for a “home-based business” don’t allow him to serve more than one customer at a time. “Am I allowed to have people over and have an art party? Am I allowed to invite people over
into my living room and have people dance?” he asked. Mills doesn’t know who launched the complaint against him, but believes it’s the same person who has been tearing down hundreds of his posters and throwing the pieces on his front lawn — and calling bylaw on him regularly. Officials from with Electric-
al Safety Authority, Municipal Property Assessment Corporation, the police and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario have been called, but found nothing wrong, he said. Mills has had to move a play structure farther back from the property line and was once almost fined for the an allegedly improper Aframe sign.
Discrimination?
An Ottawa man says a family court ruling that stripped him of custody of his sons was the result of discrimination against his weight. JOE LOFARO/METRO
Overweight father disputes findings of family court In a 33-page ruling, a judge sets the case as to why the obese father would be an unfit single parent for his “high needs” kids, aged four and six. The judge said the man doesn’t possess the “superior” parenting skills that his two young boys require and he “lacks insight into his personality traits.” The judge also said he is confrontational and intimidates others. “That is a direct discrimination on my size,” the man said. The judge also described the man as having “prejudicial/negative attitudes towards women.” “I’m a woman hater, apparently, and yet one of my best friends on the planet is a woman,” said the man. “I’ve never had a single domestic issue with any of my girlfriends, ever.” The judge’s decision also said of the father, “meeting his own needs will require significant time and effort.” “He didn’t put weight in there because he knew he would be slammed for it,” the man said. “The judge thinks I would gain weight again running after a fourand six-year-old all day. It’s the most biased thing you will ever see in your life.” JOE LOFARO/METRO

In a quiet ceremony, Minister of Veterans Affairs Steven Blaney honoured native Canadian veterans by laying a wreath at the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument, on the occasion of National Aboriginal Day on Thursday. The event included a march-on of the colours, a presentation of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals to 12 veterans, and a reading of the Act of Remembrance. Representatives of different aboriginal peoples as well as veteran associations attended. “Our government is proud to recognize the important contributions of aboriginal veterans to our military history,” said Blaney in a press release. “These brave men and women serve our country

with pride and conviction and we must ensure their legacy is preserved so that younger generations are aware of their sacrifices and accomplishments.” Joining Blaney in laying wreaths was Greg Rickford, parliamentary secretary to the minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. “The stories of aboriginal Canadians and our military history are interwoven with heroic deeds,” said Rickford in a press release. “Every story speaks of an unwavering commitment to the highest ideals of peace and freedom. Today our government honours the courageous individuals who sacrificed so much in service to our country.”

Then tackle another team where a win would land them a spot on the Olympic roster. “It’s my first chance at the Olympics,” Pilypaitis
said. “This opportunity doesn’t come around very often. There’s only one player on the team who has been, and some of the other players have gone through a few qualifiers.” Still, she said, she’s not going to let those thoughts ruin her game. “We’ve worked for this all our lives and what we have to do is go out and focus on the mo-

From No Frills to Hollywood Hills: City mulls building sound stage Invest Ottawa. The city’s economic development agency is courting film industry JOE LOFARO
joe.lofaro@metronews.ca
If the right players come to the table, soon filmmakers who come to Ottawa won’t have to use empty grocery stores for movie sets. Invest Ottawa is trying to round up support and money to build a sound stage for film and television productions. Chris Knight, chairman of Invest Ottawa’s creative industries working group, said companies from Los Angeles, Toronto and other cities are interested in possibly bidding on the project. Knight said the makers of Penthouse North, a feature
film with Hollywood stars that began shooting in Ottawa in December, had to retrofit a No Frills grocery store in Orleans as a studio for part of the filming and sound production. If Ottawa gets its first sound stage, he said it would have a significant impact on the local economy. “If a $10-million movie comes to shoot in Ottawa, probably $6 (million) or $7 (million) of that $10-million budget would get spent here, depending whether or not they do their post-production here,” Knight said. He said the city has already committed $1.5 million toward the budget for the project. The cost of the sound stage would range between $10 million and $12 million, he said. “If you’re going to take it to the next step, if you’re going to start attracting biggerbudget movies and television series, you need a sound stage,” Knight said.

Jacques-Cartier Park will feature a parachute demonstration by the SkyHawks and a synthetic ice rink where visitors can enjoy a summertime skate. To mark the Coast Guard’s 50th anniversary, visitors can board a hovercraft and watch demonstrations of rescue equipment. The theme at Major’s Hill Park is Saddle Up, Canada Day! marking the Calgary Stampede’s centennial. Western-themed workshops include line dancing and lasso techniques. Bylaw would snuff out hookah smoking on city property A proposed new bylaw could see a ban on the smoking of “non-tobacco products” in and around city facilities and parks. The draft comes after council asked for a legal opinion on how to prohibit water-pipe — or hookah — smoking in municipal areas. While the city can ban tobacco smoking, the same laws
do not apply to smoking herbal products. Proponents of a ban say water pipes are dangerous, whether they are used to smoke tobacco or a tobaccofree herbal product, in part because they use burning charcoal. Furthermore, in a recent inspection of the city’s 20 known water-pipe establishments, almost all were found
to be illegally using a product that contains tobacco. The city’s legal department found that the city can ban the smoking of “non-tobacco products” in parks and city buildings because of its authority as a property owner or leaseholder, its authority to control nuisances and its authority to regulate odours. Budget cut could put tenants at risk, community worker warns One line in the provincial budget has the potential to make more Ottawans homeless and cost the city money, a committee heard on Thursday. The provincial budget, passed in the legislature on Wednesday, eliminates the Community Start Up and Maintenance Benefit in January and puts some of the funding into a “new consolidated
program” that has not been created yet, city staff told the community protective services committee. The funding — $5.37 million from the city and $2.1 million from the province last year — goes to Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program for people who need either the first and last months’ rent to get housing
or emergency funding to avoid being evicted. “This is a situation where a relatively small amount of money for a family or individual can resolve a much bigger problem,” said Gary Stein, a lawyer with South Ottawa Community Legal Services, who made a presentation to the committee. Volunteers brave heat to build community garden in a day Dozens turn out for project. Garden allows residents of nearby apartment towers at Lee Avenue to grow their own food Graham Lanktree
graham.lanktree@metronews.ca
Braving Thursday’s sweltering heat, more than 60 volunteers used sledgehammers, nails and dirt to build a community garden in a single day in an unlikely place — near five large apartment towers at Lees Avenue. “We wanted to provide access to a community garden for the apartments,” said 73-year-old volunteer Keith Shackleton, “because they have no access to land and most of the community gardens in Ottawa have yearlong waiting lists.” Taryn Hudgins, who lives in one of the nearby apart-
ment towers at 190 Lees, said she came out to help despite the heat because she’s excited about growing her own food. Hudgins said her apartment doesn’t have a balcony, making it nearly impossible to grow vegetables from her home. “Having the garden allows me to get out and I can eat what I grow,” she said, adding that right now she’s raising green tomatoes to make relish and beets for pickling. The community couldn’t have started the project on their own, Shackleton said. Canadian Tire and gardening-tool maker Fiskars provided all the tools, dirt, trees and small plants planted around the property. “We want this to be a catalyst for other communities in the city to see this and say, ‘Let’s do something similar,’” Tonnesen added. Expert to weigh in on controversial bridge plan
Ottawa-east residents Don and Judy Lishman said the plan for a new interprovincial bridge is 1950s thinking rather than 21st-century sustainable planning. GRAHAM LANKTREE/METRO
Opponents of a new interprovincial bridge planned in Ottawa’s east end have turned to a world-renowned planning expert to prove the National Capital Commission is taking the wrong direction with the project. Stopthebridge.org founders Don and Judy Lishman and three community groups hired Robert H. Freilich, a University of Southern California profes-
sor and land-use lawyer, to review the plan. “His report says the truck problem on King Edward the NCC is so concerned about is not solved by this bridge,” said Judy Lishman. “We want to get this information out to the bridge site selection committee meeting this summer. This is not just communities crying foul, but backed up by an expert in city planning.”
The NCC argues that a bridge is needed to reduce truck traffic on King Edward Street, which currently sees more than 2,600 trucks a day. In 2031 that traffic will rise to 5,800 trucks, NCC traffic models project. Three sites are proposed for the east end near Lower Duck Island, the Aviation Parkway and Kettle Island. “The problem is that they’re diluting the prob-

Guelph. Critics blast killing of ‘enviropigs’ A group of genetically modified pigs was quietly put down last month after the University of Guelph found no way to continue the research or farm the animals out, the school confirmed Thursday. University Spokeswoman Lori Bona Hunt said she had received “many generous and well-intentioned offers” from individuals and groups interested in helping find homes for the “enviropigs.” “Releasing the enviropigs would also have violated Canadian regulations for the containment and use of transgenic animals, and possibly compromised consumer safety and market protecB.C.

Indiegogo.com has raised more than $250,000 US for the grandmother of eight A viral video of a school-bus monitor in New York state being bullied by four middle schoolers prompted a Toronto man to launch a fundraiser to send the woman on vacation. “I felt deeply sad for Karen,” said Max Sidorov, a graduate of York University. “I had some issues with bullying myself when I was a young kid and had just come to Canada, so I know where she’s coming from.” The taunting and verbal abuse of the bus monitor was captured in a 10-minute cellphone video recorded by one of the students and posted to YouTube. It shows 68-year-old Karen Klein trying her best to ignore the stream of profanity, insults and threats directed at her. At one point, she breaks down in tears. the canadian press

‘More respectful’
Parents should punish boys: Victim Karen Klein has told police that she does not want the boys to face criminal charges. She said she is happy with the swift and strong community response against the verbal attack aboard a Greece Central School District bus, authorities said Thursday. Criminally charging the boys, all seventh-graders, would require their conduct to rise to the level of a crime, Greece police Capt. Steve Chatterton said. So far, it has not been found to reach that level. Klein said she hoped the boys’ parents would view the video of the attack and talk to their children about being “a little more respectful.” Parents of all four boys are co-operating fully and say their children will be punished, Chatterton said. By Thursday morning, the video had been viewed more than 1.5 million times on YouTube. the canadian press

Accused body-parts killer Magnotta gets trial by jury Court appearance. Suspect declines psychiatric evaluation, will face preliminary hearing in March 2013 Luka Rocco Magnotta made a brief, surprise appearance in a Montreal courtroom Thursday to tie up a few loose ends in his case before vanishing from public view until early 2013. The accused body-parts killer had court dates set for early next year and was told he will face a preliminary hearing next March where part of the evidence against him will be heard. Magnotta, charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Chinese student Jun Lin, 33, has opted for a trial in front of a jury. He asked that he receive medication while incarcerated. And he introduced his team of three lawyers, including a lead attorney from Toronto. That lawyer did not ask for a psychiatric evaluation,

contrary to what one of his colleagues suggested earlier in the week. There was one other surprise twist Thursday: Magnotta appeared in court in person. Authorities had hinted that the 29-year-old murder suspect would appear by video link, as he had at his first court appearance earlier this week. While Magnotta looked sleepy, he appeared to follow

So who will defend Luka Rocco Magnotta — the man accused of mailing body parts to the Conservative Party of Canada? Ironically, it will be a Conservative. Toronto lawyer Luc Leclair, who has worked on campaigns for several prominent Conservatives, will represent Magnotta. He worked with Defence Minister Peter MacKay, in his bid for the Progressive Conservative leadership in 2003; with Belinda Stronach, when she ran for the leadership of the new federal party against Prime Minister Stephen Harper; and with John Tory, the former leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservatives.

A new ebook says Karla Homolka is now a mother of three living in the Caribbean. The publishers of Finding Karla say the 46-page book by journalist Paula Todd details Homolka’s new life as a wife and mother. A news release about the book says Todd, following an obscure lead, boarded a plane to the island of Guadeloupe this spring. She subsequently tracked down Homolka and spent an hour in the convicted killer’s apartment. The ebook is published by the Canadian Writers Group and is available on Kindle Singles, Kobo, iBooks and Nook for $2.99. In the early 1990s, Homolka and her then-husband, Paul Bernardo, were convicted of crimes related to the rape and murder of two teenage girls. Homolka struck a deal with prosecutors in 1993 to serve 12 years in prison for manslaughter. Little is known about her life since she was released from prison in 2005, but

New video. Zimmerman re-enacts fatal shooting Neighbourhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman reenacted the fight he had with Trayvon Martin in police video released Thursday, giving his most detailed account yet of what led him to fatally shoot the unarmed black teenager. Zimmerman claims in the video that Martin said “you’re going to die” and reached for Zimmerman’s gun just before the shooting. The police recording was taken a day after the Feb. 26 shooting. The video, along with audio recordings of police interviews, was released by Zimmerman’s attorney about a week before Zimmerman’s second bond hearing on a second-degree murder charge and on the heels of unflattering telephone calls capturing Zimmerman and his wife talking in code about using money collected for a defence fund to pay debts. In the video (apne.ws/ KWquJX), Zimmerman tells his side of the story to detectives, saying he grabbed his gun from a holster on his waist before Martin could get it, and shot the 17-year-old Martin once in the chest as they fought on the

Human-animal conflict increases in Kenya Wildlife. Maasai men spear lions, killing six — two adult lionesses, two younger lions and two cubs — after pride killed eight goats Crouching at dawn in the savannah’s tall grass, the lions tore through the flesh of eight goats. Dogs barked, women screamed and men with the rank of warrior in this village of Maasai tribesman gathered their spears. Kenya Wildlife Service rangers responded to the attack, but arrived without a veterinarian and no way to tranquilize the eight lions and remove them from IlkeekLemedung’I, a settlement of mud and stone homes not far from the edges of Nairobi National Park. In the end, the Maasai men — who come from a tribe renowned for its hunting skills — grew tired of waiting, said Charity Kingangir, whose father’s goats were attacked Wednesday. The men speared the lions, killing six: two adult lionesses, two younger lions and two cubs. The lions had killed eight goats, each worth about $60. Wednesday’s killings highlight the growing threat to Kenya’s wildlife posed by the rapid expansion of its capital. A week earlier, residents from another village on Nairobi’s outskirts killed a leopard that had eaten a goat. Last month, wildlife service agents shot and

killed a lion moving around the Nairobi suburb of Karen. On Thursday, three lions attacked and killed three goats outside Nairobi National Park. Rangers chased the lions back to the park. Earlier this week, the Kenya Wildlife Service sent out a public notice pleading with people who encounter wild animals “to desist from killing them.” It summed up the problem in a posting on its Facebook
page: “Do animals invade human space, or do humans invade animal space? How can we find tolerance for our wild neighbours? And how can we humanely remove them when they get a bit too close?” As Nairobi enjoys a boom in apartment and road construction, an expanding population centre is putting heavy pressure on the animals, especially big cats. If Norwegian prosecutors get their way, no one will be held criminally responsible for the deaths of 77 people in a bomb and shooting rampage that roiled the peaceful nation. Even though self-styled antiMuslim militant Anders Behring Breivik insists he is sane and that he carried out the July 22 attacks for political reasons, prosecutors said in closing arguments Thursday that doubts about his mental state mean he should be sent to a psychiatric institution instead of prison. Ultimately, it’s up to the Oslo district court to decide whether Breivik is criminally insane when it presents its ruling next month. the associated press
country’s capital. Killing lions is a crime in Kenya, but those who lose livestock to big cats frequently retaliate. About 100 lions are killed each year, and the country’s lion population has dropped to about 2,000. Lions, especially ones who leave Nairobi National Park, which is not completely fenced in, are at risk. After Wednesday’s killings, the park had 37 left, KWS estimates. the associated press
France
No links between bank hostage, March shooting: French prosecutors French prosecutors say they haven’t found any links between a gunman who took four Toulouse bank employees hostage and the man suspected of killing seven people in the same city in March. French special police captured the gunman in Wednesday’s hostage drama after a six-hour standoff. Prosecutor Michel Valet said that at the current stage of the investigation there are “no objective links” between the unidentified gunman and Mohamed Merah, the suspected gunman in the March shootings of three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three paratroopers. the associated press

A Seattle breast-cancer survivor whose breasts were surgically removed has gained the permission to swim topless at a city pool. But Jodi Jaecks wants to make sure her privilege is also extended to other breastcancer survivors who want to swim comfortably. “Initially, when I heard about the reversal, I was elevated. Then it came that it wasn’t a policy change, it was just an exception for me. Then I was quite deflated,” the 47-year-old said Thursday. On Wednesday, Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent Christopher Williams announced he was giving Jaecks an exception to the department’s clothing policy. Williams said that he will review on a case-by-case basis
requests from people who have had surgery and want to swim. After enduring two surgeries, rounds of chemotherapy and the surgical removal of both her breasts in March 2011, Jaecks wanted to turn to swimming to regain her strength. But swimsuit tops proved too uncomfortable and nerves on her chest remained tender, Jaecks said. So she asked the manager at her city pool if she could swim topless earlier this year. Eventually, she heard from the head of the aquatics department, who told her she couldn’t. Jaecks hasn’t swum topless yet. She is planning a swim on Monday. Her exception extends only to adult lap hours. the associated Press Still unhappy

Nude Judge. Man behind inquiry ordered to repay decade-old settlement The man at the centre of a scandal over a Manitoba judge’s nude photos has been ordered to repay the $25,000 he received as part of a settlement almost a decade ago. Thursday’s ruling by Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Chris Martin is the latest legal setback for Alexander Chapman, who went public in 2010 with accusations of being sexually harassed by Justice Lori Douglas and her husband, Jack King, in 2003. King had been Chapman’s divorce lawyer. He has admitted to giving nude photos of Douglas, a fellow lawyer at the time, to Chapman in an attempt to convince him to have sex with her, but said he acted without Douglas’s knowledge. Chapman complained to King’s law firm soon afterward. That led to a settlement that saw King pay Chapman $25,000 on the condition he return all photos and never publicly discuss what had happened. Chapman has admitted to breaking that deal and has said he had to go public because he continues to be haunted by what happened. Because he broke the confidentiality clause and spread the photos, Chapman must now repay the money he was given. “We know that Mr. Chapman went to the media and
provided to the media the very same documents (he had agreed to return),’’ King’s lawyer, Bill Gange, told court Thursday. Chapman will also have to pay King’s legal expenses which could top $10,000, although the exact amount has yet to be determined. Neither Chapman nor his lawyer showed up for the decision. The controversy over the nude photos, some of which show Douglas in bondage gear and performing sex acts, has led to a public inquiry. The Canadian Judicial Council is holding hearings this summer to determine whether Douglas should be removed from the bench. Douglas has denied any wrongdoing and has said she should not be penalized for her husband’s actions. The photos remain on the Internet. Chapman has already lost other legal actions. In 2010, he filed separate lawsuits against Douglas, King and the law firm where they worked. He soon dropped the claims against the law firm and Douglas due to a lack of evidence. His lawsuit against King was dismissed when a judge ruled the matter was resolved by the 2003 settlement agreement. the canadian press

ZipZone Naked 100. B.C. women go naked ziplining to raise money It’s hard enough to drop your inhibitions before climbing into a zipline harness. Now, imagine dropping your pants. An organizer in Peachland, B.C., says that’s exactly what nearly 100 women are expected to do Thursday as they take part in a charity event to raise money for breast-cancer research. Kevin Bennett says the women are participating in the ZipZone Naked 100, careening for more than half a kilometre down a cable, suspended 100 metres above the ground, in hopes of raising $20,000 for breast cancer research. Preliminary results from a necropsy on a young humpback whale confirm the creature likely died a slow death from starvation after being entangled in fishing gear. Veterinary pathologist Stephen Raverty with the Ministry of Agriculture’s Animal Health Centre in Abbotsford, B.C., says ropes had obviously been buried deep in the whale’s mouth. He says the gear had been removed by the time the necropsy was carried out, but gouges on the whale’s body revealed how it had been entangled, and also suggest it had developed secondary infections from the injuries. Blaze engulfs government office in Mumbai India. Some witnesses complained that firefighters took almost half an hour to reach site Thousands of employees were evacuated Thursday from a seven-storey government building as more than two-dozen fire engines battled a major blaze that raged for several hours in India’s financial and entertainment capital. Rescuers pulled two bodies from the gutted sixth floor of the Maharashtra state government headquarters in southern Mumbai, a state government official said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to reporters. Earlier, T.P. Lahane, dean of the state-run J.J. Hospital in southern Mumbai, said 14 people were injured, and 10 of them were hospitalized. He also said one person was in critical condition. Television images showed some people being taken on stretchers as the blaze and the billowing smoke engulfed from the fourth floor upward. A strong sea breeze fanned the fire, which could be seen for kilometres. Firefighters used hydraulic platforms to evacuate trapped people, and two navy helicopters hovered over the building to pick up people from the rooftop. Prithviraj Chavan, the state’s top elected official, said he had asked police to investigate the cause of the fire that devastated three floors of the building. the associated press

Indonesian air-force plane crashes into housing complex Jakarta. Aircraft built in 1958 rips through houses, killing passengers and residents An Indonesian air-force plane slammed into a military housing complex and ignited a huge fireball Thursday while trying to land in Jakarta, killing all seven people aboard as well as two toddlers and their nanny. The pilot, co-pilot and five trainees aboard the Fokker F-27 were on a routine training flight when it crashed into houses in a neighbourhood about 1.5 kilometres from the runway on which it was trying to land, Indonesian military spokesmen said. Raging orange flames jumped several metres into the air and a huge column of black smoke billowed over the eight homes damaged in
the crash in eastern Jakarta. Twelve people were injured, two of them critically. “I could hardly believe my eyes. There was a military plane that crashed and hit the houses,” said Hendra, a resident of the air-force complex who goes by only one name. “At once, the situation turned into chaos. All the residents fled in panic. Women and children were screaming hysterically.” He said he helped at least five injured people, mostly with burns, to a nearby airforce hospital. Six of the people aboard the plane died instantly, and the co-pilot died later while being treated at a hospital, air-force spokesman Rear Admiral Azman Yunus said. The plane broke into two parts as it ripped through the houses and plummeted to the ground, said air-force spokesman Col. Agus Sasongko Jati. The three people killed on the ground were two children in
one of the houses, aged two and six, and a woman who worked as their caretaker, he added. The aircraft, which was built in 1958 and has been used by Indonesia’s air force for the past 35 years with 14,900 flight hours, was declared airworthy before it took off for its second training flight of the day under clear skies. “It seemed that the pilot was trying to land on a nearby paddy field,” Jati told The Associated Press. “But it was not clear whether it was because of an emergency.” A running text on TVOne said the black boxes of the illfated plane have been discovered, but Jati did not confirm. The crash comes after a Russian Sukhoi passenger jet crashed last month into an Indonesian volcano during a demonstration flight for potential buyers, killing all 45 people aboard. the associated press

Beauty queen shaved head for charity Just three months ago, Debbe Ebben had no hair. On Saturday night, she was crowned Miss Alaska. Ebben shaved her head in March to raise more than $4,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which donates money for childhood cancer research. She said she did it to let children who lost their hair because of cancer treatments know that it was OK to be bald. Choosing her words carefully, she said losing one’s hair should be special — whether it’s voluntary or not. “I wanted to put meaning and emotion behind it, and let them know why I’m doing it — for the kids,” she said. “I’m not shaving it to get attention. I’m not shaving it for publicity. I’m not shaving it because it’s a really easy hairstyle to go with. I’m shaving it for them.” Ebben’s brown hair had grown back to a pixie cut

U.S. Catholic bishops launch campaign for religious freedom Critics. Campaign accused of being a partisan assault on President Obama Roman Catholic groups in the U.S. started a two-week campaign Thursday of prayer vigils and rallies to fight what they consider government attacks on religious liberty. The immediate target is the mandate that President Barack Obama announced in January requiring most employers to provide health insurance that covers birth control, which the Vatican opposes. Critics accuse the bishops of organizing the campaign as a partisan assault on Obama. But church leaders say their only goal is to protect religious freedom. The Fortnight for Freedom campaign runs through
Independence Day, July 4. “In only the past few years, we’ve experienced rampant disregard for religious beliefs in this country,” New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan wrote in an e-book released for the Fortnight effort. Among the examples he cites are approval for embryonic stem-cell research, legal justification for torturing prisoners and support for same-sex marriage. Dolan is president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Opponents are unconvinced. “This bishops’ project isn’t about religious freedom — it’s about privilege,” said the Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. “They are asking for preferential treatment from the government, and if they are successful, it would undercut the rights of millions of Americans.” the associated press

No money for forced sterilization victims in U.S. Between 1929 and 1974, North Carolina forcibly sterilized about 7,600 people whom it deemed “feebleminded” or otherwise undesirable. Many were poor black women. Now the first serious proposal to compensate the victims has failed, with Republican lawmakers saying the budget is too tight to give them any money. “At this point, I have lost all hope,” one of the measure’s biggest supporters, Rep. Earline Parmon, said Wednesday.

Egyptians cry foul as election results withheld
Egyptian protesters wave national flags and banners in Tahrir Square in Cairo on Thursday. Authorities delayed Thursday’s planned announcement of the winner of Egypt’s presidential election, spurring political tensions and charges of deals, fraud and interference from Egypt’s ruling military council. Manu Brabo/The Associated Press
Egypt’s media are demonizing the Muslim Brotherhood as the state’s worst enemy, claiming the fundamentalist group plans to plunge the country into chaos if its candidate does not emerge as the winner from the presidential runoff. Results of the weekend election were set to be announced Thursday, but officials postponed the declaration, setting off a wave of charges of manipulation aimed at all sides, including the ruling military. The Brotherhood escalated its fight with the military, calling for a mass protest Friday to denounce what it called a power grab by the generals. Three major Islamist groups said Thursday they would join the protest in Tahrir Square,
birthplace of the uprising that forced Hosni Mubarak out of office last year. Thousands of protesters, mostly Islamists, gathered in Tahrir Thursday for the third successive day. Protesters demanded the reinstatement of the Islamistdominated parliament dissolved by a court ruling last week. They also called on the military to rescind a “constitutional declaration” granting the generals sweeping powers and stripping the next president of much of his authority. The sense of political uncertainty engulfing the country following last weekend’s presidential runoff is heightened by the failure of Egypt’s

Absorbed. Rained-soaked crowds welcome summer solstice at Stonehenge Rain-sodden crowds welcomed a spectacularly wet summer solstice at Stonehenge in true British fashion Thursday: with stoicism and wit. So bad was the downpour that even one of Britain’s latter-day druids — fixtures of the annual celebration — was forced to seek refuge with journalists in a tent set up near the entrance. “It’s a wash,” said King Arthur Pendragon, his fine white beard turned into a
soggy silver sponge. “Literally.” English Heritage put the crowd at the southern England summer festival at 14,500, well below figures that typically hover around 20,000. But through the wind and rain, drummers inside the ancient stone circle kept up their thumping rhythm, new-age pagans kept up their chaotic dance, and visitors kept up their sense of humour. Syrian fighter pilot defects to Jordan Diplomacy. Quoted High-level defection is sensitive due to close ties “He was given asylum because if he returned home, his safety will not be guaranteed.” between the countries Jordanian security official.

A Syrian fighter pilot on a training mission flew his MiG-21 warplane to Jordan on Thursday and asked for political asylum, the first defection of an air-force pilot with his plane during the 15-month uprising against President Bashar Assad. The air force is considered fiercely loyal to Assad’s regime, and the defection suggests some of Syria’s most ironclad allegiances are fraying. It was a triumph for the rebels fighting to overthrow Assad. A spokes-
man for the rebel Free Syrian Army, Ahmad Kassem, said the group had encouraged the pilot to defect and monitored his activity until the jet landed safely in Jordan. The pilot, identified as Col. Hassan Hammadeh, removed his air-force tag and kneeled on the tarmac in prayer after landing his plane at King Hussein Air Base in Mafraq, Jordan, 70 kilometres north of Amman, a Jordanian security official said. He said Jordanian officials
were questioning the defector, but he will be allowed to stay in the country on “humanitarian grounds.” “He may be tortured or killed,” the official said, if the pilot returned to Syria. He declined to say what Jordan will do with the jet. The official insisted on anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the matter. Syria’s state-run TV reported earlier in the day that authorities had lost contact with a MiG-21 that was on a training
mission in the country. After it became clear the pilot had defected, the state-run news agency quoted an unnamed military official as saying he was “a traitor to his country and his military honour.” The defection is a sensitive issue for Jordan, which wants to avoid getting dragged into the Syrian conflict. Jordan already has taken in 125,000 Syrian refugees, including hundreds of army and police defectors, and Syria is seeking their return. Syria is one of Jordan’s largest Arab trade partners, with bilateral trade estimated at $470 million last year. Syria has been hit with defections before, although none as dramatic as the fighter pilot’s. the associated press

Flaherty introduces new mortgage, lending rules Expected announcement. Both Flaherty and Bank of Canada head Mark Carney have expressed concern about rising household debt Buying a first home or taking out a loan against an existing residence will be more difficult for Canadians under new rules announced Thursday, but Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says it’s for their own good. For the fourth time in as many years, the finance minister moved to tighten the mortgage and lending landscape — changes that mean up to five per cent of Canadians who might be considering buying a new home will likely no longer qualify. This time Flaherty’s cutting the maximum amortization period for government insured homes to 25 years from the current 30 years, and limiting how much homeowners can borrow

on the value of their homes to 80 per cent from 85 per cent. Those are not the only changes the government is making. It will no longer be in the business of insuring homes that
are worth more than $1 million — meaning buyers will need to put up at least a 20 per cent down payment or seek private insurance. As well, it will insist that pro-
spective buyers have the means to afford mortgage payments, property taxes and heating costs on their home. It will do so by setting cost ratios based on household income — a kind of affordability ratio — of 39 per cent for gross debt service and 44 per cent for total debt service. “It’s a question of trying to moderate behaviour and I hope Canadians will reflect before they jump into a market at the high end,” Flaherty said. “It will mean that some people will not buy into the market. It will also mean that some people will buy less into the market; they’ll buy a less expensive home or less expensive condominium. “Good. I consider that desirable.” The changes go into effect July 9. The most significant change is the reduction to the amortization period, bringing it back to the level it had stood historically before rising to as high as 40 years during the heady prerecession days of 2006.

Economy running on fumes: Carney Canada’s relatively healthy economy has been largely based on borrowed money, but the situation cannot go on indefinitely, Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney warned Thursday. The central bank governor’s stern words to a business audience in Halifax came just hours after federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty moved to clamp down on household lending. Carney made clear that he endorses the moves, calling them “prudent” and “timely” to support the long-term stability of the housing market and guard against financial excesses. Carney suggested he has no patience for the view that instead of raising interest rates his next move will be to cut the trendsetting overnight rate from the current one per cent, where it’s been since September 2010. the canadian press

Even as BlackBerry maker Research In Motion faces what’s certainly the most difficult period in the company’s history, its executives haven’t lost their sense of humour. A whirlwind summer tour to entice software developers took a hilarious turn Thursday as the lights dimmed in a hotel conference room and several of the company’s development team appeared on screen singing a parody of Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker’s The Waiting. “The waiting is the hardest part. BlackBerry 10 will be stateof-the-art,” the executives sang in the mock music video.
“But the waiting is the hardest part.” That sentiment could be echoed throughout the tech industry as investors, analysts and consumers keep their eyes on the Waterloo, Ont.-based company. RIM has tumbled from grace over the past two years with remarkable speed, but is trying to prove a newfound agility while preparing the debut of its long-awaited new smartphones sometime later this year. The pseudo-rock-band parody marked the start of the daylong BlackBerry 10 Jam showcase, designed to convince the
tech industry’s creative types that the BlackBerry is still a cutting-edge device with a promising future. The event races across North America in the coming weeks before heading to Europe, Asia and Latin America later this summer. Another Canadian stop is scheduled for July 11 in Montreal. If all goes according to RIM’s plan, developers will buy into the company’s new operating system and help turn its BlackBerry App World store into something that rivals Apple’s iTunes app selection.

If RIM is able to get more developers onside before the launch of its new devices, it will be further ammunition in its defence against a rush competition expected later this year • However, changing the minds of developers is a task that literally will take the company months — the BlackBerry Jam tour, which began this month, stretches into August.

BMO. Court certifies Telecom. Telus’ foreign foreign-exchange lawsuit ownership questioned A class-action lawsuit against BMO Nesbitt Burns, BMO Investorline and BMO Trust Company has been certified by the Ontario Superior Court. The suit accuses BMO of automatically converting any foreign currency that was paid into RRSP accounts into Canadian dollars without authorization. It further alleges that BMO charged undisclosed or inadequately disclosed and unauthorized fees related to the foreign-currency transactions. None of the allegations have been proven in court.
BMO said it was disappointed with the decision and that it would defend the case, but declined further comment because it was before the courts. The Income Tax Act allowed foreign currency to be held in a registered account after June 14, 2001. The case is seeking reimbursement of the foreignexchange fees charged on the purchase and sale of foreign investments held in registered accounts and the fees paid related to the conversion of foreign currencies that were paid into the accounts. the canadian press
Wireless phone company Globalive is accusing Telus of violating Canada’s foreignownership limits, an allegation the Vancouver-based telecommunications company denies. Globalive, which faced a regulatory hearing on its foreign ownership before it launched Wind Mobile in 2009, alleged that ownership in Telus outside Canada totalled 48 per cent instead of the allowed 33.3 per cent. However, Telus said Globalive incorrectly calculated the level of foreign ownership by using postal or zip codes of
where account statements are mailed rather than the actual citizenship of the owner. Telus also said the report cited by Globalive grossly overstates the number of Telus shares outstanding. “I can unequivocally assure you that it’s not 48 per cent and we are compliant,” said Ted Woodhead, vice-president of telecom policy and regulatory affairs at Telus. Globalive said it wants the CRTC to conduct a public review of Telus’ compliance with foreign-ownership rules. the canadian press

Nik Wallenda. The high-wire artist calmly Neil Morton crossed over Niagara Metro Falls with nerves of steel, all the while talking to his father and play-by-play commentators on ABC on a broadcast that 13.1 million viewers watched. The only thing he didn’t do was send a live tweet. But he did tweet right after @NikWallenda: “Love you Niagara. What’s next?” Apparently the Grand Canyon. Radiohead/The Flaming Lips. In a “great cosmic collision” of live music, the Flaming Lips and Radiohead were to perform simultaneous sets in Toronto Saturday night. Except Radiohead’s concert was cancelled after a pre-show stage collapse at Downsview Park, resulting in the death of drum tech Scott Johnson. The Flaming Lips paid moving tribute, covering Radiohead’s Knives Out at Yonge-Dundas Square. Carly Rae Jepsen. Even Katy Perry’s daring nude bodysuit couldn’t trump Mission, B.C.’s pop sensation Carly Rae Jepsen. World domination is imminent. Justin Trudeau for prime minister? With the Liberal party leadership up for grabs after Bob Rae’s announcement he won’t run, many are wondering if the charismatic son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau will vie for the party leadership. Justin is considering running, and a poll says 42 per cent of Canadians think he would do a good job. Trudeaumania: The Sequel. Rodney King. After his brutal beating by police officers in 1991 stunned a nation, King went on national TV a year later following their acquittals, which started race riots in L.A., and pleaded for peace. King himself never found peace, battling alcohol and arrests — and was found dead in his pool Sunday morning at the age of 47. Fitting, perhaps, that it was officers who pulled him out and tried to perform CPR on him. Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo had been a bust on the international stage until shining for the first time at Euro 2012 this week — scoring three dramatic goals in Portugal’s two wins to push them into the semifinals. He’s no Pele, but he has put himself among the greats. And he can definitely bend it like Beckham. Will turns 30. It’s hard to believe, but the little boy who grew up before the world’s eyes — son of the iconic Diana, Princess of Wales — turned the big 3-0 this week. No word on what Kate got him, but I would have recommended a flash mob with the Queen, Kate, Harry, Charles and the guards at Buckingham Palace. Beau Hossler. The amateur golfer participated in the U.S. Open on the weekend, and while he didn’t come close to winning — he finished tied for 29th after briefly holding the lead in the second round — remember this: He’s only 17. He was cheered and serenaded at every hole, and given a standing ovation at the end. “Let’s Go Hoss-ler” tees may someday go viral. Jack Osbourne. The reality TV star from the famous Osbourne family announced he’s been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, discovering he had it after losing much of the vision in his right eye. “Adapt and overcome is my new motto,” says Osbourne, who recently became a dad. And now possibly a spokesperson for the disease à la Montel Williams. Canada’s Walk of Fame. Musicians Randy Bachman and Sarah McLachlan, the late comedian Phil Hartman, ballerina Sonia Rodriguez, football player Russ Jackson and the 1972 members of Team Canada are among this year’s inductees to Canada’s Walk of Fame, and will get a star in Toronto’s entertainment district on Sept. 22. Nine-day celebration

Three deities worshipped
Hindu devotees from the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) touch a painting in reverence on a road surface during a chariot procession of lord Jagannath in Hyderabad, India, Thursday. The annual Hindu festival Rath Yatra sees three idols — representing lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra — taken out in a grand procession in specially made chariots called raths, which are pulled by thousands of devotees. the associated press
The nine-day Indian celebration marks the annual journey of the three deities to the Devi Gundicha temple, which belongs to their aunt. “Normally, the deities are worshipped within the temple throughout the year. However, on the day of Rath Yatra, they are taken through the Badadanda so that devotees — including non-Hindus and foreigners who are not allowed inside the temple — can have a glimpse of the gods,” a member of the temple told the Hindustan Times. metro

Anthony Mackie, left, portrays Will Johnson, and Benjamin Walker stars as the title character in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. HANDOUT Reel Guys
RICHARD CROUSE AND MARK BRESLIN
This is no history lesson Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Once you get past the crazy premise, the film is actually entertaining
Richard: Mark, for a movie about vampires it has very little bite. There are a couple of big action set pieces and bloodsuckers get killed by the dozen, but I thought the over reliance on computer generated effects reduces the vampire battles — and that’s what we’re paying to see! — to a bloody synthetic spray of binary code, and little more. What did you think? Mark: I have rarely seen a movie with a more idiotic premise, but I have also rarely seen a movie of this type so beautifully shot or art directed. The
Synopsis
The story of Abraham Lincoln’s bloodsucker battles begins in 1818 when his mother is killed by a vengeful vampire. His hatred of his mother’s killer grows for years, but when he finally has the chance to even the score, he is instead, literally bitten by the urge to hunt vampires. Teaming up with a Van Helsing-esque warrior named Henry Sturgess (Dominic Cooper), he uses a silver-tipped axe to make sure America remains “a nation of men and not monsters.” •

3D is ravishing. If you can accept the ludicrous, absurd game of revisionist history that’s being played here, you might have a good time at this
flick. My main problem is that the movie adopts a different tone in its last third, after Lincoln becomes President. The cleverness gives way to spectacle, and I got left behind in all the conventional carnage onscreen. RC: I wanted the carnage! This isn’t a history lesson, it’s a movie about killing vampires and on that level it only works in the film’s OTT action sequences. Give me more of Honest Abe jumping from horse to horse during a stampede, and less of everything else. Although I have to have a soft spot for a movie that wraps up (MILD SPOILER) with Mary Todd Lincoln saying, “Abraham! Hurry, we’re late for the theatre!” MB: And the movie lost major points for me for not showing the scene and suggesting that Lincoln’s assassin, John
Wilkes Booth, was actually a vampire! The movie may not be a history lesson, but it does play with history, which gave it some tang for me. It sure wasn’t the dialogue, or the acting. In fact, the lead, Benjamin Walker, got the part because he was the only actor who could embrace the premise without bursting into derisive laughter. You’re right about the stampede scene, though. Exciting, original, and very memorable.
The New York Press Club is condemning Alec Baldwin’s alleged assault of a newspaper photographer outside a marriage license bureau. The press club released a statement Wednesday saying Baldwin’s actions “should not be tolerated.” They say he is a public figure and that his activities are “legitimate subjects of media interest.” Police have confirmed that Daily News photographer Marcus Santos has filed a complaint against Baldwin. They say Santos claims he was punched while snapping photos of Baldwin and his fiancée on Tuesday. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
On the web
RC: You can’t make a sequel if you kill the main character! No matter what really happened if this movie makes money, Abe will be back killing vampires, honestly. MB: What worries me isn’t the sequel, but the copycats: Franklin Roosevelt: Werewolf Killer; JFK: Alien Hunter; and worst of all, Stephen Harper: Zombie Slayer.

Set in Toronto, Sarah Polley’s Take this Waltz explores infidelity Adulterous dilemma. Actress-turned-filmmaker’s latest effort deals with a moral tussle that will divide audiences Steve Gow
scene@metronews.ca
Take this Waltz divides audiences, and actor-turned-Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sarah Polley is perfectly satisfied with that. “To me the film is a little too soft or something but I’m amazed at the way people are responding to it,” said Polley in Toronto recently. “People bring their past relationship to it, people bring their current relationship to it and I feel like they
align themselves with one character or another…so I love hearing what people think the film is saying.” Named after a Leonard Cohen song, Polley’s sophomore effort (in theatres June 29) sticks to her roots. Set proudly in Toronto, Waltz explores a happily married woman’s (multipleOscar nominated actor Michelle Williams) moral tussle with desires of infidelity when she meets a bohemian artist. “I actually think the gender divide is really complicated on this one. I feel like it’s much more common to see men on television and in movies have sexual restlessness and to still like them (despite) that,” said Polley referring specifically to the popularity of Mad Men character Don Draper. “It’s interesting to me that we’re more comfort-
Romanticizing Toronto
“I always imagined Toronto would be a main character in a film,” said Polley. “It was like an opportunity to celebrate Toronto and really show it the way I romanticize it and idealize it and the way I love it.” • Some of Sarah Polley’s work: The Adventures of Baron Munchausen; Road to Avonlea (TV series); The Sweet Hereafter; Dawn of the Dead; John Adams (TV mini-series); Away From Her (Writer/Director)

achievements — an aspect of her career she admits “may take a bit of a hit”. After 27 years in front of the camera however, Take This Waltz (and the Oscarnomination she received
for writing Away From Her) establishes Polley’s best work in filmmaking is yet to come. “(Screenwriting) is my favorite part,” said Polley. “Maybe I feel there’s
actually very little art to screenwriting. Everybody is impressed if you can write a half-decent screenplay but actually anybody who’s ever watched movies could. I find it kind of hilarious.”
Family Guy came first for MacFarlane before he could cuddle up with his Ted Bear necessities. Entertainer’s directorial debut delayed due to show’s temporary cancellation in 2004 NED EHRBAR
Metro World News in Hollywood
Seth MacFarlane has certainly established himself as a bona fide entertainer, with three animated series on TV, 2.2 million Twitter followers and a burgeoning career as a crooner. And now he makes his debut as a director with the comedy Ted. So why has it taken him this long to get around to making a movie? A lot of that had to do with
making sure his flagship property could survive without him. “Family Guy had that little cancellation thing happen,” MacFarlane says, referring to the hit show’s brief death in 2001 and rebirth in 2004. “I wanted to make sure that it was fully on its feet after coming back before I stepped away to do a film because it did mean stepping away from that show

completely for at least a year.” And while Family Guy has its origins in a pair of animated film pitches MacFarlane developed, Ted took the reverse track: “This was an idea that had actually been floating around in my head for a while. I had originally conceived it as an animated series idea and for a number of reasons shelved it,” he recalls. “When it came
time to do my first movie, it seemed like a story that would make a much better film than a series.” That idea — about a man (Mark Wahlberg) and his teddy bear (voiced by MacFarlane) that magically came to life when he was a kid — might seem cartoonish on paper, but MacFarlane’s main concern was making the situation believable.

Pfeiffer’s one of us in People Like Us Going to new places. Veteran actress found it liberating to display natural beauty in warts-and-all role of widowed mother Ned Ehrbar
Metro World News in Hollywood
Despite the fact that actor Chris Pine has grown accustomed to taking a beating on film — with roles in Star Trek and this year’s This Means War — Michelle Pfeiffer wasn’t particularly enthused about joining the party. “Oh, I hated that,” Pfeiffer says of her first scene with Pine in People Like Us, in which she slaps him across the face. “I didn’t like having to do that. I didn’t even like watching it. It’s so brutal,

really, to slap somebody. I think it’s probably hard for audiences to see that. That’s a really hard thing to recover from.” In People Like Us, Pfeiffer plays Lillian, the mother to Pine’s Sam, who is dealing with the aftershocks of discovering his recently deceased father secretly had another child (Elizabeth Banks). Given
the tension in the motherson relationship on screen, Pfeiffer’s main concern was conveying some warmth in Lillian. “One of the things (director) Alex (Kurtzman) and I talked about from the beginning was that she just didn’t become one dimensional and really cold and icy,” Pfeiffer says.

“
THE BEST MOVIE SO FAR THIS YEAR!
SPECTACULARLY GOOD.”
“We wanted to find the humanity of this person who was just really limited and damaged and who had made certain choices in her life that she may regret, that she’s not proud of. What I love about her is that she ultimately owns up and takes responsibility for those choices. I think she’s unapologetic about it.” Another thing she decided to be unapologetic about was Lillian’s look, presenting her natural beauty with a fair dose of weary reality. “It’s not easy to see yourself at your worst,” she says of watching the finished product. “None of us want people to see us when we’ve just rolled out of bed and your hair is dirty and you don’t have any makeup on and you’re puffy from whatever you’ve been doing. And that’s who she is. “I wanted to do that. I wanted to go there, I felt it would be liberating.”

Hold Fast goes from book to film Movie. Story tells the tale of a Newfoundland boy’s quest to belong The classic Newfoundland novel Hold Fast, ranked by Quill & Quire as second only to Anne of Green Gables for Canadian children’s books, will soon be a film starring Molly Parker, Andy Jones and soulful newcomer Avery Ash. Fourteen-year-old Ash hails from the tiny coastal community of Hant’s Harbour, N.L., on the Bay de Verde Peninsula, a tight-knit town not unlike the fishing outport that his character, Michael, calls home. In the book, Michael is suddenly wrenched from everything he loves most when his parents are killed in a car wreck. He and his little brother, Brent, are separated as the younger boy stays with their aunt and grandfather, while Michael heads to a larger city to live with his Aunt Ellen,
played by Parker of NBC’s The Firm, and Uncle Ted, played by Newfoundland actor Aiden Flynn. Michael bonds in that troubled house with his cousin, Curtis, but soon begins to crack under the weight of his grief, taunts at school and his Uncle Ted’s heavy hand. When those pressures build into a major blowup, Michael takes off with Curtis in tow to the woodlands that were once his refuge. Their timeless quest for both freedom and belonging is set against the spectacular backdrop of Newfoundland’s Gros Morne National Park and postcard-pretty fishing villages such as Bauline. It’s an adventure film based on a story that still resonates almost 35 years after it was first published, Ash said during a brief break from filming. “Michael, at the start of the movie, he’s really quick to judge people. But at the end of the movie he learns that you can’t really judge people by how they look or by how they act at first sight.
“You definitely can learn from this book. Michael experiences being picked on by a big bully at school, and other children or kids can learn that it’s not a good thing to do. It’s another way to reach out about bullying.” He flashed a wide grin as he talked about the thrill of making his first feature film after playing parts in local theatre. Ash and 12-year-old Douglas Sullivan of St. John’s, who plays Curtis, were selected after months of auditions around the province. It’s the second time Parker has filmed in Newfoundland after her role 10 years ago with William Hurt and Andy Jones in the film adaptation of Newfoundland author Ed Riche’s book Rare Birds. Her friendship and collaboration with Hold Fast co-producer and screenwriter Rosemary House brought her back to the Rock right after 10 months of filming the new TV series The Firm, based on John Grisham’s best-selling novel. the canadian press

From saving lives in the ER to fighting aliens TV. Noah Wyle shows off his acting chops in Falling Skies Noah Wyle is confronting an alien invasion, the death of his wife and the potential annihilation of the human species in Falling Skies. But he had to face a more personal issue in tackling the role of history professor Tom Mason in TNT’s sci-fi series, which airs Sunday nights: Wyle, 41, has become an elder statesman, relatively speaking. “I’m Anthony Edwards,” said Wyle, referring to the ER co-star who’s got eight years on him and boasted more credits when they started on the medical drama in 1994. “I’m the guy who’s been around a little longer and has a little more set savvy.” His TV expertise is much appreciated, said Remi Aubuchon, the show’s executive producer. “Noah is a terrific example for the rest of the cast and us. He’s always on set prepared and he stays on the set. And this is a revelation for me, he reads scripts early and his notes are
always well thought-out and smart.” Intelligence is a hallmark of Wyle’s characters since ER, the actor acknowledges: “I tend to play smart guys, which I like. Brains over brawn.” But Professor Tom is far from desk bound. There’s plenty of opportunity for him to show off his action skills as Tom and other Earthlings fight multi-legged aliens, unfondly nicknamed “skitters” by their human prey, and their murderous robots. The 10 episodes of season two, filmed in Vancouver, bring new depth to the characters and begin to unfold the “mythology onion” surrounding the aliens and their mission, Wyle said. the associated press

Weather not to blame
Get to bottom of stage collapse situation sound check
Alan Cross scene@metronews.ca
It’s not your imagination. We are seeing more tragic stage collapses. It’s not enough that concert-goers have to worry about violence, bad drugs and mosh-pit injuries. I know that I’ll never see a temporary outdoor festival stage without wondering if the damn thing is going to come down on someone. This used to be a fairly rare occurrence until 2009 when we had two situations. The first came that August when a windstorm swept through the Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose, Alberta, killing one and injuring 15. The other was in France a few weeks later when a British man died during the construction of a stage for Madonna. (To be fair, that tragedy was caused by the collapse of a crane,

not the stage itself). Last summer, we had three terrible collapses. Cheap Trick narrowly missed being crushed during their set at Ottawa’s Bluesfest when the roof came down during a sudden windstorm. Seven people were killed when another storm blew through the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds just before Sugarland was to take the stage. And five people were killed when the weather turned bad at the Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium. Fans were terrified. Promoters were horrified. Staging companies promised higher standards. Authorities instituted strict inspec-
tions. Insurance companies demanded higher liability premiums which either cut into profit margins or were passed along in the form of higher ticket prices. Some went so far as to blame global warming, saying it was the cause of these sudden ferocious storms. “We won’t let this happen again,” everyone said. Meteorologists were hired to provide ample warning. Kudos to the people in Las Vegas who stopped the Electric Daisy Carnival a couple of weeks ago when the skies turned ugly. Nothing happened and no one was hurt, but better safe than sorry, right? So why did the sky fall last Saturday before the Radiohead show in Toronto? It certainly wasn’t the weather. It was sunny and pleasant with light winds. The evening’s forecast looking great. The Ontario Ministry of Labour says they’re on the case. And because Downsview Park is federal land, Ottawa is on the case, too. Get to the bottom of this. We need to know why three of five of the worst stage collapses in the world over the last three years happened in Canada.

Matthew Sweet: Back in the arms of a good friend Anniversary. 20 years after the release of his smash Girlfriend, the singer returns with a tour to celebrate the hit and a new album Linda Laban
Metro World News in Boston
Maybe anniversaries exist as a do-over. At least, that’s how it’s working out for Matthew Sweet, whose 20th anniversary tour for his iconic 1991 record Girlfriend has kept him busy since last fall. This time around, says Los Angeles-based Sweet, he’s getting to enjoy the record. “I’m not as nervous and freaky as I was then, I’m more

grounded now. So I can enjoy it more,” says the 48-year-old Nebraska native. “It was a hard time for me. I had made two records before Girlfriend with no success. Then came all the attention. I was not prepared for the amount of work and specifically the amount of meaness that was reflected back at me. It was sickening, in a way.”
We’re talking 20 years. Does Sweet feel, well, old? “I feel old in general. It doesn’t feel like some old thing I’m having to relive,” Sweet says of Girlfriend. “At the end of 2010 I thought, ‘It’s going to be 20 next year, we should do something.’ “(Then) I thought, ‘What was I thinking?!’ I had to relearn (the album). Now, it’s really comfortable for me. Once we learned the record, it just felt normal.” And what of Sweet’s new stuff ? His scheduling is a bit off: Sweet released his new album, Modern Art, just before the Girlfriend anniversary tour began. “We knew the two were coinciding, but I thought I could keep on promoting Modern Art beyond Girlfriend. It makes Modern Art a bit more mysterious. But I think it will get its attention over time.”

Taking travels into darkness Jukebox the Ghost. Singer Tommy Siegel on the losses that led his usually peppy band to sing about Ghosts in Empty Houses Killian Young
scene@metronews.ca
The first half of the new
Jukebox the Ghost album is as jaunty and upbeat as ever, but later in the journey of Safe Travels, the band trade in some of their certifiably danceable hooks in favor of deeper, darker introspection. “To me, all good pop music — even good, sunny pop music — has a real hint of sadness going on,” says guitarist and singer Tommy Siegel. “If you’re all bubbles and happiness all the time, it doesn’t really resonate with
people.” Siegel says that most of the songs on Safe Travels, were written before the band actually assembled to record. But when pianist and vocalist Ben Thornewill lost his grandfather and drummer Jesse Kristin lost his father, both to lung cancer, it gave the latter half of the album a heightened emotional power. Tracks such as Dead, Adulthood and Ghosts in Empty Houses deal with weighty
fears of mortality previously untouched in the band’s first two releases. “It is more vulnerable,” Siegel says of the new album. “It’s a lot more personal than we have been in the past.” Fresh off trying out the new material at the music festival juggernaut that is Bonnaroo, Jukebox the Ghost dive headfirst into the type of thoroughly demanding tour that now defines them. Their New York City show sold out
months before. “It sold out so far in advance, that there was never really any way for someone who wasn’t already a huge fan of our band to get a ticket,” says Siegel of the Bowery Ballroom gig. “So that’s really exciting to me — that we’re going to get on stage, have a sold-out crowd and it’s going to be filled with only people who are really on top of the band and really like the band.”
Step by step
How to go about choosing your album artwork. • Why they went with an abstract image. The album
artwork for Safe Travels features a painting from artist Christopher Ferrino. The cover photograph on their previous effort, Everything Under the Sun, is also by Ferrino. Siegel says the decidedly abstract image comes from a series of Ferrino’s depiction of ladders.

Adding Canadiana to a scary sci-fi world Victor Webster. Up and coming actor talks about policing the mean streets of Vancouver on Continuum Steve Eramo
scene@metronews.ca
ArnAud MAggs identificAtion ThE ExhIBITION ON A LIFETIME OF DISCOvERIES, ExPERIENCES AND INFINITE CURIOSITY. Until SEPTEMBER 16, 2012 NATIONAL GALLERY OF CANADA
From his electrically-charged performance as the heroic mutant Brennan Mulwray in the sci-fi TV series Mutant X to the sword-wielding warrior Mathayus in the feature-length tale The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption, Victor Webster has always been a natural when it comes to playing the good guy who sticks up for what he believes in. Currently, the Calgary-born actor can be seen playing Vancouver police detective Carlos Fonnegra in the hit Canadianmade sci-fi/police drama Continuum. His character partners up with a colleague from the future, 2077, City Protective Services (CPS) Officer Kiera Cameron, who, together with a group of death row terrorists, travels back in time to the present day. “Carlos is rather intense and by the book, but I also wanted him to be someone who you could go out and have a beer with,” explains the actor. With Carlos it’s a matter of knowing when to get down to business and allowing your emotions to get away from you a little bit. In Continuum’s first season opener, A Stitch in Time, Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols) is witnessing the execution of a terrorist cell, including its leader Edouard Kagame (Tony Amendola). But something happens seconds before the terrorists are supposed to be put to death, and they are transported back to Vancouver 2012. She joins forces with Carlos — who is unaware of her true identity — to find the terrorists before their actions alter the future. “From the very beginning Carlos is quite skeptical of Kiera,” says Webster. “He can tell that something’s wrong and what she says is not all true. “As the season goes on, she proves invaluable as far as having Carlos’ back,” continues the actor. “Kiera is there for him on more than one occasion and vice-versa. rescue as well throughout the season. “Because of this, I think Carlos has had to learn that even though he might not have all the answers, he still must continue to do his job, which is odd for him because he’s used to having all his ducks in a row. Although he holds a black belt in Tao Kwon Do, Webster felt his character should defend himself in other ways when not armed with a gun. “Having grown up in Colombia, Carlos wouldn’t have been a martial artist,” he notes. “He would have been a boxer. Boxing is huge in the Latin culture, and being part Latin myself I understand that. “I wanted my character to know how to box, and growing up in Canada, he would have played hockey as well. Playing a bit of a bad boy
Victor Webster may best be known by sci-fi fans for his role of Brennan Mulwray on Mutant X. • “I enjoyed playing Bren-
nan because he had a good sense of humour,” says Webster. “He’s a guy who came from the wrong side of the tracks, so he had that kind of rougher edge to him and wasn’t as polished as Forbes March’s character of Jesse Kilmartin, who came from a rich family and was a computer nerd.
and punching him, and, of course, boxing. Digging into his characters and truly enjoying his work is what Webster is all about. Becker, NCIS, CSI: Miami, The Exes, Bones and Charmed are just a few of the actor’s many other gigs he has loved. “I always try to find as much enjoyment in every job as I possibly can… Fortunately, I’ve always had things really good as an actor, and I don’t know if it’s just because I try to find the positive in everything or if I’ve just been exceptionally lucky, but I’ve had nothing but great experiences so far in this business.”

Jenni (JWoww) Farley, left, and Nicole (Snooki) Polizzi pose in New York in February. Charles Sykes/the associated press file
‘I just laugh all the way to the bank every day’: Snooki Guidettes forever. With meatball baby on the way, Snooki doesn’t care what the haters say Nicole (Snooki) Polizzi says she doesn’t care what anyone says, she’s ready to be a parent. “I know I’m ready, I’m excited, I can’t wait and this is gonna change my life and you know I’m totally 100 per cent on board with everything that’s going on,” she said. Polizzi is due in September with her first child with fiance Jionni LaValle. She was newly pregnant while filming her Jersey Shore spinoff with Jenni (JWoww) Farley, Snooki and JWoww. It airs Thursdays on MTV at 10 p.m. EDT. Polizzi, 24, and Farley, 26, talk about critics, their friendship and babies. Snooki, what was it like filming your show while pregnant? Polizzi: I was in my first trimester. Usually during that time you’re very tired, you get sick a lot so I was just basically tired a lot and I was grumpy. Farley: But, you’ve got to understand also this girl is used
to sleeping until 3 o’clock in the afternoon from being hung over so it was just a different type of tired that I’m used to. Polizzi: Yeah, instead of me being hung over I was just pregnant and resting. How do your boyfriend and fiance get along? (Farley is in a relationship with Roger Mathews.) Farley: Roger and Jionni really like each other... Polizzi: It’s really easy that they get along because we’re gonna be with them for the rest of our lives. Farley: They have to get along because our babies are gonna have babies. We’ve decided. So I have to have a boy and she has to have a girl no matter how many kids we pop out so two end up together. What if they don’t like each other in that way? Farley: Just reproduce. Use a turkey baster. Polizzi: Or a one-night stand. Farley: I want our blood mixed! Nicole, has it been hard dealing with scrutiny over your pregnancy? Polizzi: I mean I really don’t give a crap what anyone thinks
about me and I haven’t since day one. So, people think I’m not fit to be a parent. I don’t care what you think, you know what I mean? Farley: But I think for you and I think for all of us it’s the factor to love to prove someone wrong so they can, like, say anything they want because Nicole is just gonna prove them wrong and then kind of like laugh at it at the end. Polizzi: I just laugh all the way to the bank every day (laughter.) You’re best friends now but in the first episode of Jersey Shore we saw things didn’t start off so smoothly. (Polizzi got very drunk and ended up passing out while her other roommates went out.) Polizzi: The first time I did meet Jenni at the shore I definitely loved her. I liked the look of her. She’s really pretty and was someone I could kick it with but she wasn’t that nice to me. Farley: She scared me. I was like what is this little thing? Polizzi: I was already two drinks down... Farley: She was coming at me like a rabid dog. I went the opposite way. She was giddy and excited to be on TV and I was shy. The associated press

Bieber tired of fans ‘in his face’ Justin Bieber isn’t always in the mood to indulge his adoring fans, as a group of them learned at the Toronto airport this week while Bieber waited for girlfriend Selena Gomez to arrive, according to Hollyscoop. “Do I not have any right as a human being to sit and wait for my girlfriend?” he asked during a backand-forth with some of the assembled fans demanding his attention, complaining that they’d been waiting all

Alec Baldwin
Note to paparazzi: Don’t mess with Alec Baldwin Alec Baldwin insists he did not punch a photographer in New York recently, but he doesn’t deny making physical contact with the man in question. “There was a person in front of me and he was blocking him. And the guy lunged and almost hit me in the teeth with the lens of the camera. So I just pushed
the guy away,” Baldwin says in an interview with Charlie Rose. Baldwin also takes issue with the very nature of paparazzi: “We make ourselves available as an obligation per our contract to our employers to represent the product and help to sell the product. And then when I walk out the door, that’s over,” he insists.

Jim Carrey backs out of Dumb and Dumber 2 Jim Carrey won’t be taking part in a Dumb and Dumber sequel after all, with his rep telling Entertainment Tonight that Carrey had become “increasingly frustrated” at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’s delays in getting the project going.
“I would have thought Dumb and Dumber 2 was a no-brainer,” Carrey says in a statement. “After all, it’s implied in the title.” Carrey and co-star Jeff Daniels were all set to return for the sequel, according to codirector Peter Farrelly.

Boredom blamed for Depp split Monica Weymouth
scene@metronews.ca
Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis are staying quiet about their separation — meaning “inside sources” and “close friends” are extra busy. According to one source, the reason the ultra-famous, continent-hopping couple broke up after 14 years is pretty much the same reason us mortals call it quits: boredom, with a side of sparkly things in the distance. “He was bored senseless with her, being with Vanessa was making him miserable,” a questionable friend tells Radar Online. “The spark had gone, and there was nothing left. Johnny just wants more from life and believes Vanessa deserves to be happier too. He’s not embroiled in some hot and heavy new romance and he has no plans to jump straight into something straight away, but he is keen to have some fun again.” If nothing else, the fun part seems to be true. After performing with the Black Keys at the MTV Movie
Awards, Depp’s been spotted out late in Hollywood with Marilyn Manson. It’s times like this we’re glad we’re not artistic millionaires. Can you imagine having to try new things and party with rock stars every time your life got boring? We can barely find motivation to juice the limes.
Today in the Kardashian saturation Kim Kardashian thinks she found something special in current boyfriend Kanye West. “It’s very comforting to have someone that knows everything about you, that respects you, understands, has gone through the similar things,” Kim tells Oprah in an interview airing Sunday on the OWN network. “I feel like I’m at a really happy, good space.” Kim, we know love — even your brand of it — can be blind, so listen very carefully: We all know everything about you. I spent more time at your wedding than I did at my own. This intimate, special connection you’re feeling? Kanye, like the rest of us, probably just “lost” the remote one weekend.
‘I still believe in love and marriage’: Katy Perry Despite a heartbreaking divorce from Russell Brand after 14 months of marriage, Katy Perry is keeping positive. “I still believe in love and marriage. I’ve just learned lessons along the way. I regret nothing,” she tells the Hollywood Reporter. Still, it wasn’t easy being on tour while her marriage was suddenly falling apart. “What was go-
ing on in my personal life was so overwhelming that I had to bend over to let those tears fall straight out of my eye sockets and not my false lashes just as I’m about to go up on that ramp and sing Teenage Dream,” she says. “I had to smack myself across the face and say, ‘These problems are my problems, they are not my audience’s problems, learn to separate that.’”

Liquid Assets
A wine to match those cool summer nights LIQUID ASSETS
Peter Rockwell @therealwineguy peterrockwell@eastlink.cca
I’ve never been much of a seasonal wine drinker. The thought of avoiding some bottles in favour of others because of the time of year has never made sense to me. Sure, some wines have temperature issues. Now that summer has finally arrived, a heaping glass of full-bodied red can come across flabby and uninspired when it’s hot. I have to admit, though, summer is really the realm of whites: The kind of wines that refresh and thirst-quench without running amok all over your palate. Some will suggest that a rich, dry Sauvignon Blanc is the king of summer. Others might choose an aromatic white like one made with Viognier or Chenin Blanc. While all worthy contenders to the throne, riesling is my go-to warm weather white grape. Schmitt Söhne’s Fünf 5 Riesling ($9.95 - $13.99) is ripe and relaxed with appleoriented fruit that’s drinkable right out of its powder white bottle (OK, maybe with a straw). The great thing about riesling is that it’s amazingly food friendly. It will help wash down everything from standard barbecue fare, seafood dishes and salads to more exotic menus inspired by Asia, India and, especially, Mexico. Flex your grilling muscles with grace Mexican. Traditionally, summer is a time for men to show their alpha side by getting territorial over their barbecue cooking space while sporting a ridiculous apron. It’s a primal thing: raw meat, fire gazing and alcohol. Stereotypes aside, barbecuing is globally popular and perhaps one of the few occasions that you won’t complain when you’re presented with a charred carcass. However, there are ways that we can improve. Yes, gentlemen, barbecuing is not an innate skill. Chef Ben Bartlett explains why there’s more to the cuisine than plonking raw meat onto a scorching grill. Bartlett says, “It’s about the flavours from the wood, marinates and spices. Flavoured
woods like cherry and apple or oak add a great smokey depth to meats.” There are also some really simple things that we can do to make sure that the meat is properly cooked. The chef suggests, “If you use coals, heap them up into a pyramid add fresh fuel to the edge and push inwards — it creates a really even cooking platform. Secondly wait till your wood or coal goes ashen grey to avoid flare-ups.” The U.K.-based BBQ supremo continues, “Take your meat out 30 minutes before you cook, so that it reaches room temperature — it’ll cook more evenly this way. You want to achieve a core temperature of 75 F.” METRO WORLD NEWS

Plenty on Senators’ wish list ahead of draft THE HOCKEY NEWS
Murray Pam ottawa@metronews.ca
The Ottawa Senators are slated to select 15th overall on Friday at the NHL entry draft. Whether the club actually makes a selection with that pick is still up in the air. Director of player personnel Pierre Dorion, the team’s draft guru, will be going about his regular business — looking to acquire young blood for the future. GM Bryan Murray, however, may have other aspirations. With 29 other GMs in the house and the July 1 free agent crop looking to be one of the thinnest in recent memory, Murray may seize the opportunity to address some of the Senators’ off-season needs. The club has indicated the desire to fill at least one scoring void within the top-six forward ranks. That number will quickly double if captain Daniel Alfredsson chooses to retire. With veteran Filip Kuba potentially set to depart via free agency, Murray will also pursue a defensive partner for the freshly inked $45.5-million man, Erik Karlsson. “There are people on this team that we are not interested in trading, but it may well happen,” Murray admitted. “We would try to do something to either add a player or a higher pick.” As for the draft, Dorion and his scouting staff feel it is a “good one,” but Dorion cautions there is a “drop-off point” to be wary of. Last June, the club selected forwards with their first five picks. Logic suggests the Senators will add to their blueline this time around, but who’s yet to be picked always plays a role. “(We will) pick

“Logic suggests the Senators will add to their blue line this time around, but who’s yet to be picked always plays a role.” the player who will help the most,” Dorion said. “We are never set on a position.” That being said, there are several intriguing prospects who should be available if the Sens hold on to the 15th selection. Ottawa 67’s fans are hopeful that Orleans, Ont., native, Cody Ceci, will still be on the board. Hampus Lindholm, a six-foot-three, 196-pound product from Sweden, left a
solid impression with many scouts at the combine. Derrick Pouliot, an offensive dynamo who played for Portland of the Western Hockey League, notched 59 points in 72 games this season. Specialteams whiz Matthew Finn of the Guelph Storm is also an option. Ottawa has one first-round pick along with two thirdround selections and one pick
in each of Rounds 4-7. Dorion said the Senators will draft a goalie at some point. Last week, the team’s braintrust interviewed a number of netminding prospects, including Malcolm Subban of the Belleville Bulls, Daniel Altshuller from the Oshawa Generals and Francois Brassard of the Quebec Remparts. Four years ago, drafting in that same No. 15 slot, the Senators selected a slight, five-foot-10, 161-pound Swede who would become the 2012 Norris Trophy winner. Fans can only hope lightning will strike in the same place twice ... provided the Sens hold on to that selection, of course.

Ronaldo strikes again for Portugal Euro 2012. Portuguese knock off Czechs to advance to semifinals After his fine footwork failed to find the target, Cristiano Ronaldo knocked in the only goal Thursday with a thrusting header, sending Portugal into the European Championship semifinals with a 1-0 victory over the Czech Republic. After Ronaldo twice hit the post, he finally darted in from behind his marker in the 79th minute with all the instincts of an all-out striker
and headed a cross from Joao Moutinho straight at the ground and up past the flailing hands of Czech Republic goalkeeper Petr Cech. “I remember in the last game I hit the post twice, too,” said Ronaldo, who scored his third goal in the last two matches. “But the most important thing is I managed to score this time, we won and are in the semifinals. Now it is big smiles and good music.” Portugal, which will play either Spain or France in the semifinals in Donetsk, Ukraine, next Wednesday, is one game away from reach-

was the lone goal on Thursday. His strike finally punished the negative tactics of the Czechs, who had parked most of their players in front of Cech for much of the game. The Czechs did not have a single shot on goal, and only two attempts during the whole match. The Euro 2004 runners-up had 20 attempts. The Czechs started without captain Tomas Rosicky, whose Achilles tendon injury hadn’t yet recovered enough for him to start in the country’s most important game since it lost in the Euro 2004 semifinals.
