Police investigate second shooting in Danzig probe AARON HARRIS/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Fashion Week. Robin Kay steps down
Hours after a gunfight broke out at a community barbecue in Scarborough last month, two bullets ripped through the front window of a house 10 kilometres away. Toronto police have confirmed they are now investigating a possible connection between the mass shooting on Danzig Street and a later shooting on nearby Whiteleas Avenue. An 18-year-old man who lives at the home where the second shooting took place was arrested July 27. Shaquan
Mesquito is charged with threatening to harm people on Danzig Street the day of the block party. Police did not release any information at the time of his arrest. Torstar News Service learned about the charges through court documents. Mesquito, tall and broadshouldered, appeared briefly in a Scarborough courtroom Wednesday, wearing a black polo shirt, with his hair in cornrows. The teen is charged with two counts of uttering threats “to cause seriously bodily harm” to people who attended the Danzig community barbecue on July 16 — an event that ended in the worst mass shooting in Toronto’s history, with two dead and 23 suffering gunshot wounds. Police further allege that on July 27 Mesquito was found carrying a restricted weapon
— a loaded .22 calibre revolver — for a “purpose dangerous to a public place.” He faces nine weapons-related charges. Const. Wendy Drummond said police do not have any information to suggest the weapon he is accused of carrying was used in the Danzig Street shooting, nor do they have information that places Mesquito at the block party. Police said the shots on Whiteleas Avenue were fired at 1:05 a.m. — about 2 1/2 hours after gunfire erupted on Danzig. No one on Whiteleas Avenue was injured. Mesquito is the second person charged in the block party shooting. Nahom Tsegazab, 19, also appeared briefly in a Scarborough courtroom Wednesday, charged with reckless discharge of a firearm. Police are not alleging that he fired the fatal bullets. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE
Killers being sought
• The manhunt continues for the shooter or shooters who killed 14-yearold Shyanne Charles and 23-year-old Joshua Yasay, and left 23 others with bullet wounds. Police say witnesses are fearful about coming forward. • Whiteleas Avenue, near Finch Avenue East and Markham Road, has known violence in the past. In April 2006, homes on Whiteleas were sprayed with bullets during a drive-by shooting. In March 2000, an 18-year-old man was shot in the leg as he arrived at a house hosting a birthday party.
Toronto Fashion Week has been sold to a global event management firm and founder Robin Kay is stepping down as executive director after 13 years at the helm. “Fashion week is much bigger than me as an individual person,” Kay said in an exclusive meeting with Torstar News Service and Peter Levy, a representative for new owner IMG Canada. “I really believe that this is the best next step on the runway for the event, for the City of Toronto and for our market as Canadians on the global runway,” said Kay. IMG Canada bought the event for an undisclosed sum. Toronto Fashion Week is a biannual event that showcases Canadian designers and is meant to boost the local fashion industry. It has grown from an audience of 200 in 2000 to an event that attracts 40,000 guests over five days. IMG Worldwide operates and manages sports, entertainment and fashion events in 30-plus countries. Its portfolio includes fashion weeks in Berlin, New York, Tokyo, Mumbai, Moscow and Miami. Kay will remain president of the Fashion Design Council of Canada (FDCC). Markham takes big step toward NHL-size arena Sports. Site plan revealed, with plans to fast-track start of construction Plans for a proposed NHLsized arena were officially submitted to the City of Markham on Wednesday morning, a crucial step in a lengthy approval process aimed at getting shovels in the ground as early as this fall. The site plan for the 20,000-seat arena was submitted by Graeme Roustan, chairman and CEO of GTA Sports and Entertainment, at a news conference at the Markham Town Centre. The application includes the design, a traffic study and sustainability study that will be reviewed by staff and opened to public consultation before it is approved. “This is one of many steps that has to take place, but it’s an important step,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “When you submit your site plan application, it indicates from the private sector side that you are serious about the project and want it to proceed.” Once it’s approved, a building permit can be issued and construction can begin on the $325-million arena. Scarpitti said the city will make the project a priority. He told reporters that starting construction this fall is ambitious, but “it’s possible we could be in the

Rough start for GFL The second day on the job for Green for Life (GFL) Environment Corp. didn’t go much better than the first day. Waste services general manager Jim Harnum said GFL was behind on Wednes-

He expected all garbage and organic material would be picked up by 8:30 p.m. but didn’t expect all recycling to be collected before day’s end. “GFL will again be bringing in additional resources (Thursday) in an effort to catch up,” Harnum said in a statement. torstar news service
Port Lands project steaming ahead After dodging a proposal that would have turned the Port Lands into a carnival sideshow, development of the massive parcel of land is back on track. Waterfront Toronto and the city unveiled the latest vision for the Port Lands on Wednesday, almost a year after it was nearly derailed by Coun. Doug Ford’s plan to build a Ferris wheel, monorail and megamall. The new $1.9 billion plan moves up the timeline for development, which is what the city asked for last September when councillors voted against Mayor Rob Ford’s bid to take over Waterfront Toronto, the city-provincialfederal agency tasked with developing the lakeshore area. The city also joined on as a partner. The original plan for the Port Lands was contingent on making the area floodproof in
case of a massive storm that would overwhelm the Don River. Accomplishing that meant moving the mouth of the river from the Keating Channel to the Toronto Harbour, an immense undertaking with a price tag of more than $600 million — a sum Waterfront Toronto didn’t have. Instead, this time around, landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh has taken a novel approach to flood protection, reconfiguring the proposal so flood protection is phased in one area at a time. This also reduces the initial costs. And it means parts of the 400-hectare Port Lands can be sold off for development, with the money used to build flood protection in another area. Currently, there’s no funding for the project. torstar news service

ground later this year.” There’s still a lot of work to be done on negotiating the financial framework, legal agreements and the degree of community access to the arena. The city plans to hold public meetings in the fall to
share details. Roustan unveiled the design for the arena, which will be solar-ready and birdfriendly, and will hew to LEED standards for sustainability. In April, Markham council overwhelmingly approved
a unique public-private financing plan for it. The city will borrow $325 million to pay for construction, half of which will be reimbursed by a private group headed by Roustan and financially backed by Rudy Bratty, of the Remington Group Inc. The other half will come from future development in Markham and revenue from the centre when it opens. The aim is to have the arena ready for business by late 2014. torstar news service

It’s not all George Clooney and Johnny Depp at the Toronto International Film Festival — although eight eager young stars of I Declare War wouldn’t mind sharing some red-carpet time with them. A Montreal student protest designed to send an anti-government message in the midst of a Quebec election campaign was broken up by riot police Wednesday. back to class — and how that decision might affect the election campaign. It has been accepted as conventional wisdom in Quebec that continued unrest might encourage voters to re-elect the Charest Liberals out of spite. But the premier has downplayed such talk. He said Wednesday that more unrest is the “last thing” he wants, as a political leader and as a father. But Charest says he expects students to respect the law, and for teachers to teach. His controversial Bill 78 imposes stiff fines on anyone who blocks a school, as protesters did in some cases last spring. “The law says what? It says a Quebec student has a right to an education and the right to enter his classroom. Is that too much to ask? ... I don’t think so,” Charest told a campaign news conference. the canadian press

Study says. Stressed men find plumper women hot Many men might say they’re most attracted to women who are svelte, icons of that so-called feminine ideal portrayed in magazines and other media. But never fear, you ladies of more Rubenesque proportions: it seems a man’s body size preference can be somewhat fluid — and one of the factors that appears to affect it is stress. British researchers have found that men faced with a stressful situation tend to change their assessment of what constitutes an attractive female, moving away from slender to a range of plumper women. Publicity stunt. Vegas billboard with dummy on noose startles drivers Even by Las Vegas standards, it was a shocking billboard: a mannequin dangling on a hangman’s noose below a black sign with the ominous words “Dying for Work.” Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Jeremie Elliott says the emergency service calls started coming in as the sun came up early Wednesday, with drivers worried the stiff, black-suited dummy swaying at the end of a rope was a real person. “It’s a publicity stunt, obviously done in bad taste,’’ said Elliott, adding that officials were focused on getting it down quickly to avoid distracting drivers during the morning commute. The graphic display along the interstate was one of at least two unauthorized signs spotted Wednesday morning in the Las Vegas area. Another Sikh temple massacre

Gunman shot himself: FBI
Troops trained by mercenary army
The gunman who killed six people at a Sikh temple in the U.S. died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after he was shot by police, the FBI announced Wednesday. Authorities previously said an officer had fired the shot that killed gunman Wade Michael Page. The FBI says investigators have not yet “clearly defined a motive” for Sunday’s shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin.
Canadian troops and police were trained for two years by the international security contractor formerly known as Blackwater, court records show. The partnership was revealed as part of a $7.5-million settlement of criminal charges against the company that’s now known as Academi LLC. The Harper government has had a standing, untendered contract with company, referred to as the world’s largest mercenary army, since 2008.

Wanted: Single white drug mule Trafficking 2.0. That sweet-talking cybermate on the online-dating site could be the front for a drug cartel in search of unwitting smugglers Lillo Montalto Monella
Metro World News in Buenos Aires
One day, Sharon’s and Catherine’s online daters, named “Frank” and “Marc,” asked them to finally meet in person, but not before one last favour: Travelling to Argentina to pick up some sensitive documents. The women eventually agreed, thinking their dream had finally come true. But the documents, hidden without their knowledge in a secret compartment of their luggage, turned out to be cocaine. That’s how Sharon Mae Armstrong, 55, a former highlevel civil servant in New

Zealand, and Catherine Blackhawk, 49, an American nurse, suddenly became the last link in a drug-trafficking chain. Astonished, they ended up behind bars last year in the same federal prison outside Buenos Aires. Their cases show that dating deceits — which rose by 150 per cent last year alone, fraudprotection agency Iovation reveals — are moving beyond the simple “take the money and run” into the domain of highly organized criminal cartels. “People like Sharon are thrown into the fray with luggage where the cocaine is easily detectable,” says Claudio Izaguirre, president of the Argentine Anti-Drugs Association. “She is just a decoy, a scapegoat. The real mules are behind her,

managing to get through while the attention falls on her.” In January, a third person fell into the same cybertrap and was caught at Buenos Aires airport: Paul Howard Frampton, 69, a distinguished professor of physics and astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Frampton has said he was lured to meet a woman he thought he had been chatting with on the Internet, Czechborn lingerie model Denise Milani. He was given luggage to carry by someone claiming to be Milani’s intermediary. The case contained two kilograms of cocaine. Julieta Lacroze, Armstrong’s lawyer in Buenos Aires, says it’s hard to find exact figures on the pervasiveness of dating scams. Victims tend to feel embarrassed or humiliated, so most frauds go unreported. “It is easy for criminal organizations. They just have to sit down and chat,” Lacroze said. “Three months of work via the Internet, and that’s it. For five kilograms of cocaine, that’s a fairly good return.”
Both women and men who use online dating sites need to be alert to drug trafficking and other scams. Thinkstock
Q&A
Sharon Mae Armstrong, arrested on April 13, 2011, faced 16 years in jail but in the end was sentenced to four years, 10 months. Waiting for an appeal, she tells Metro how she got tricked. “A cousin of mine created an account for me on a dating website. It had been 20 years since I had been in a relationship, and I was not really interested. On the very last three or four days before the trial subscription’s expiration, I was approached by this guy who said he was living in the same city where I’d just moved looking for a new job. I was in a very vulnerable position. He kept saying we were going to get married. He was a very good talker. I should have known.”

Argentine model Daiana Antivero, 19, was arrested last year on drug-smuggling charges. She was later released, but the incident earned her the nickname “Narco Model.”
How do you feel about being called Narco Model? Did it help your career? Not at all. I lost a lot of work due to what happened.

A self-proclaimed prophet had a vision from God: He would build an Islamic kingdom — under the earth. Digging began in a Russian province about a decade ago and 70 followers soon moved into an eight-level subterranean honeycomb of cramped cells with no light, heat or ventilation. Children were born. They, too, lived in the cold underground cells for many years — until authorities raided the compound last week and freed the 27 sons and daughters of the sect. Proved right after a decade: Agencies tapped phone calls Affidavit filed. Suspect’s long doubted ex-lawyer now vindicated by CSIS’s and CBSA’s recent admissions that agents tapped conversations A lawyer who represented two men branded as threats to national security said Wednesday he was stunned to discover confirmation of his long-held suspicions that government agents had listened in on his phone calls with his clients. Federal lawyers had heaped scorn on him when he first raised the issue a decade ago, Rocco Galati said, and it was only recently he learned he’d been right all along. on secret evidence they were not allowed to see. A dozen years later, both men — in prison or under house arrest despite facing no charges in Canada — are still fighting to have their certificates quashed. In 2008, Canada’s spy agency admitted listening in on Mahjoub’s calls with his lawyers, but only as a way to monitor his bail conditions, one of which included his consent to having his phone tapped. A judge quickly ordered an end to the practice. Mahjoub’s current lawyers have since gained access to information that shows the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and the Canada Border Services Agency had been intercepting communications between him and his lawyers, including Galati, from the get-go.

Four Mistakes that can Cost You on Car Insurance Keep your rates low by avoiding these costly mistakes. The cost of car insurance is a major expense for most people, and rising rates often seem unavoidable. But an increase in your premium is not always something you can’t avoid. Often, simple errors lead to over-paying for insurance. These four mistakes are the quickest way to see higher premiums. Earning a traffic ticket. Tickets are one of the most common reasons that insurance rates go up. Many different traffic violations can be responsible for an increase. Speeding, running
right lights and careless driving are all violations that result in insurance rates that are higher. It takes three years before the ticket is removed from your driving record. Not shopping for rates before you buy a new car. People often find themselves shocked by the cost of insurance on their new car, but there’s a way to avoid that. Every car comes with a different insurance rating, and some are pricier than others to insure. When you’re considering options, get car insurance quotes on each possibility before you make a buying decision. Failure to shop around at regular intervals. Many people avoid it because they believe it’s a hassle, or think they can’t get a better rate.
It’s not just about saving you money. Wait, it is. Visit InsuranceHotline.com today and experience a fast, free, and easy service that works for your wallet.
This is one expensive mistake. People who take the time to shop around almost always pay less; and with internet quoting sites like InsuranceHotline.com, it’s easier than ever. Failing to take advantage of multi-policy discounts. What do your home and auto insurance have to do with each other? Well, if you insure them all in the same place, it could be quite a lot – of savings that is. Most insurance companies offer a multi-policy discount. If you don’t have all of your policies in the same place, you could be missing out on some big savings on all of your policies. Remember that the very best way to keep your insurance premiums low is to be a safe
driver and shop around for better rates. Insurance quoting sites like InsuranceHotline.com can help by comparing your insurance rate against over 30 car insurance companies to find you a lower rate available for your driving profile.

Court orders Tories to find new arbitrator Labour dispute. Canada Post’s biggest union learns via Facebook of Guy Dufort’s ties to Conservative party The Federal Court has ordered the Harper government to find a new arbitrator in a lingering dispute between Canada Post and its biggest union. In a decision released Wednesday, the court said arbitrator Guy Dufort’s previous work for Canada Post and history as a Conservative candidate in Quebec casts doubt on his impartiality. “In light of the unique context of labour relations and the special law, the court concludes that a reasonable and sensible person might worry that the arbitrator is biased because of these two reasons,” says a sum-

the social networking site with both Labour Minister Lisa Raitt and Tory MP Steven Fletcher, the junior minister responsible for Canada Post. The links have since been removed. “The union has written to Lisa Raitt, asking that a mediator be appointed to facilitate the collective bargaining process instead of appointing another ’friend’ to force a winnertakes-all final offer selection on the parties as mandated by the back-to-work legislation,” CUPW said in a statement. The government is now considering its options, and Raitt’s office had little to say on the matter. “Our government took action and passed a law to restore delivery mail to Canadians. Android dominates smartphones worldwide Phone wars. iPhone, BlackBerry losses are Android’s gain Got an iPhone? You’re in the minority. There were four Android phones for every iPhone shipped in the second quarter, research firm IDC said Wednesday. That’s up from a ratio
of 2.5 to 1 in the same period last year. The success of Samsung’s Android phones helped Google’s operating system extend its dominance in the smartphone market. The gains came largely at the expense of BlackBerry phones made by Research in Motion Ltd. and Symbian phones made largely by Nokia Corp.
Gaining ground
Samsung Electronics Co. and other phone makers shipped nearly 105 million Android smartphones in the April-June quarter, giving Android 68 per cent of the worldwide market, which is up from 47 per cent last year.

signalling an end to cyclists’ camaraderie I am a rogue of sorts. A selfloather, perhaps. A traitor to John Mazerolle my own people. metronews.ca/voices/ I ride a bicycle, and I hate he-says cyclists. It’s a moral quandary, to be sure. Since there’s apparently a war between bikes and cars, I am a king without a country. I kickstand alone. It’s tough, but I have little choice in the matter. Experience has taught me that many cyclists do not know the rules of the road. In fact, I’m not confident that most cyclists know there are rules of the road. This makes every bike ride I take an emotional rollercoaster. At first, I’m happy. This stage lasts a good 15 seconds. But then I start to tense up like a child with divorcing parents, because I know there’s going to be yelling. And, sure enough, sometime within the next few minutes I’m barking at someone, usually a ‘fellow’ cyclist. Despite my shrieks, it never seems to get any better. I guess I’m not yelling properly. Cyclists fail to signal, dominate shared paths, run red lights, pass on the right of cars turning right, and ding their bell at people while riding on the sidewalk, all with alarming regularity. Can you imagine if a car moved into a bike lane and honked at a cyclist to move? The Car vs. Bike War would go to Def-Con 1. As history and J.J. Abrams have taught us, it’s human instinct to hate The Others because you don’t know their perspective and therefore assume the worst. But to me, it makes more sense to hate The Sames because I’m well aware of their perspective and don’t understand why they aren’t as good as me. I’m not a great cyclist by any means, but it isn’t exactly a high bar to jump over. No BMX skills required. And when confronted with their lack of skills or knowledge, most cyclists give one of two infuriating answers. 1) “The chances of me hurting anybody by breaking the rules are much less than if a car did it.” This is equivalent to saying, “Yeah, I punch stuff randomly, but imagine if I had a baseball bat. That’d be crazy.” 2) “Motorists wouldn’t know what to do if I signalled properly and followed the rules anyway.” At which point I have to get my helmet replaced because I’ve slammed my head repeatedly against a table. It hurts me to say it, but I hate you, bad cyclists. I don’t know where we took a wrong turn, but I’m sure you didn’t signal it. So our friendship must now come to a full stop. Then again, I guess you don’t know what that is...

U.S. saw warmest July in more than 100 years
“This would not have happened in the absence of humancaused climate change.”
Teagan Rogers, 10, enjoys a splash of cool water at Borah Pool Tuesday in Boise, Idaho. This probably comes as no surprise: U.S. scientists say July was the hottest month ever recorded in the Lower 48 states, breaking a record set during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

• In the past, skeptics of
global warming have pointed to the Dust Bowl to argue that recent heat isn’t unprecedented.
• But climate scientist Jake
Crouch, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said this shows that the current year “is out and beyond those Dust Bowl years. We’re rivaling and beating them consistently from month to month.”

The average temperature last month was 25 C. That breaks the old record from July 1936, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Records go back to 1895.

Theatre. In its second decade, juried festival constantly looking to challenge convention BACKSTAGE PASS
Ian Gormely scene@metronews.ca
Summerworks, Toronto’s annual festival of cutting-edge theatre — which starts today for an 11-day run — has certainly made its mark on the city’s creative arts scene over its two decades in existence. “Many would say without Summerworks they wouldn’t have a career,” says Michael Rubenfeld, the fest’s artistic producer. Scratch Summerworks’ vitality up to its insistence on offering original work from local artists and the rigorous selection process for its Local Series, which makes up the bulk of the fest’s program. Each spring Rubenfeld gathers a panel of three jurists with a “strong understanding of good art” to sift through the 200 submissions the festival receives each year, ranging from scripts for plays to videos of interpretive dance. “We’re always looking for work that is critiquing or challenging traditional systems,” he says. The juried process evolved over the past decade as the fest moved away from a lottery system. This year’s jury includes Rubenfeld, now in his fifth year as artistic producer, theatre and video artist Jordan Tannahill, Governor General award-winning

Music works too
While Summerworks owes its well-earned reputation to its excellent theatrical program, there’s more to the fest than just playwrights and thespians. This year’s installment also includes a robust line-up of musicians including Buck 65, Sandro Perri, Maylee Todd and Hawksley Workman
playwright Erin Shields and actor and director Nigel Shawn Williams.
performing in collaboration with many of the city’s theatre artists. There’s also the Live Art series, curated by Forest Fringe founder Deborah Pearson, S.L.I.P. Program workshops focusing on “the business of art” and the Performance Bar series on Captain Ron’s Ship of Friendship.
The quartet whittle down the material over four increasingly lengthy meetings.
•
Summerworks runs until Aug. 19. Check out the website at summerworks.ca for the full program.
Like any art, the process is subjective and there’s no definitive way to predict which scripts will connect with an audience. “There’s a lot of arguing, absolutely,” says Rubenfeld, as each member tries to sway
the others on their personal favourites. Quality, timing, representation and the past work of the people involved were all weighed to come up with this year’s collection of 33 works. Ultimately though, it comes down to “do I want to sit in the theatre for an hour and watch this?” Rubenfeld admits that it’s a draining process, which he likens to building a small city. “By March, you never want to read a play again, but you’ve got 10 months to forget.”

When Philip Morris wanted to shed their sullied rep, they rechristened themselves Altria. To mark his rebirth as a reggae artist, Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus has recast his animal spirit by adopting the handle Snoop Lion. The documentary Reincarnated premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September will tell the tale. While swapping a bark for a roar may be a major transformation, Snoop isn’t the first cool cat to drop a moniker like it’s hot.
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs In 2001, a few weeks after being cleared of gun possession and bribery charges that could have put him away for up to 15 years, Sean Combs decided an alias update would be a great way to start the next chapter in his life. “I’m not doing it as serious as Prince. I just want something fresh,” he told MTV, explaining his rationale for taking up the new mantle of P. Diddy. A serial name changer, the hip-hop mogul has gone by Puff, Puffy, P. Diddy, Diddy and King Combs at various times. In May 2011 Combs decided to have fans call him Swag for one week.

On the occasion of the pint-sized wonder’s 35th birthday, Minnesota’s most funky denizen rechristened himself as an unpronounceable love symbol, a fusion of the glyphs for male and female. With no words to call him by, the star became known as The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. During his symbol phase Prince recorded some of his most eclectic and experimental material. In 2000 he reverted to his given name. “My publishing contract with Warner-Chappell expired, thus emancipating the name I was given before birth — Prince — from all long-term restrictive documents.”
In 1999 the country music giant with more than 100 million albums sold threw fans for a loop and decided to reinvent himself as a rock star. Enter alter-ego Chris Gaines, a bewigged, sour-looking Australian with a soul patch. In the faux-tragic riddled back story, Gaines, the guitarist in the group Crush, goes solo after the band’s lead singer perishes in a plane crash. His subsequent album sells like hotcakes and he wins a Grammy. Billed as the fictional character’s greatest hits collection, In the Life of Chris Gaines was a flop and Brooks deepsixed the character.
The actress remains best known for her ’80s heyday when she played Denise Huxtable on the Cosby Show, blazed bohemian fashion trends and was Lenny Kravitz’s muse. But in 1992 Bonet went to court to have her name legally changed to Lilakoi Moon. The official explanation for sprucing up her ID was to protect her privacy. Professionally she continued to use her given name in films like Enemy of the State and High Fidelity. Bonet’s original taste for names was headline news once again in 2009 with the announcement of the arrival of her son Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa.
Last year the Lakers forward, an imposing defensive dynamo whose skills can put a serious damper on an opponent’s shooting percentage, became Metta World Peace. The irony of an athlete once slapped with an 87-game suspension for taking a brawl into the stands having World Peace stamped on the back of his jersey was not lost on commentators. This past April, after a Metta elbow gave Oklahoma Thunder guard James Harden a concussion, non-sports fans must have raised an eyebrow at the ensuing “World Peace Suspended” headlines.

Country power couple. McGraw-Hill take their act, kids to Las Vegas Country music power couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are heading to Las Vegas. They will be performing a 10-weekend run of shows at The Venetian starting Dec. 7. The couple announced the news Tuesday during a press conference at the hotel. Hill said they were thrilled about the opportunity to be creative in a way they’ve never experienced together before. “Being in this intimate environment, it will be ‘us,’” added McGraw. “I’m very excited.” The show is called Soul2Soul, named after their hugely successful co-headlining tours in 2000 and 2006. According to Pollstar, their 2006-2007 Soul2Soul II run remains the highest-grossing North American tour in country music history. The Las Vegas shows will mark the first time in six years that McGraw and Hill have performed a full concert together in the United States. McGraw said they are in the process of building the show and he promised that the production will be cutting edge.

Time out. Acclaimed Canadian DJ says he’s feeling pressure after rapid elevation to stardom, but will still tour, write new music
Before Hill and McGraw take over the main stage, the Venetian is featuring the following acts: • Joan Rivers. Sept. 6-8, Nov. 8-10 • Craig Ferguson. Sept. 13-15
Rapidly rising Canadian electronic producer Deadmau5 says he’s going to “slam on the brakes” for a while, writing in a blog post that he’s “pretty miserable right now.” The Niagara Falls, Ont., native — whose real name is Joel Zimmerman — has been all over the news this year, performing at the Grammy and Juno Awards, appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone
• David Spade. Sept. 21-22, Oct. 5-6 • Tim Allen. Sept. 28-29, Nov. 3
They may be superstars, but McGraw and Hill are also full-time parents of three daughters. During the show’s run, the family will live in The Venetian. Hill said the hotel worked around their children’s school schedules to make this happen. McGraw said his daughters (15, 14 and 11) are excited to see the shows in Las Vegas, joking that “they probably won’t see ours, though.” The associated Press

iCarly star moves on after emotional finale Same character, new show. Jennette McCurdy will keep Sam Puckett alive when spinoff Sam & Cat debuts next year
Nickelodeon’s hit show iCarly made Jennette McCurdy a star, and although the show will air its series finale in November, the 20-year-old Garden Grove, Calif. native doesn’t have to worry about what comes next. The network has tapped McCurdy and actress Ariana Grande to star in a spinoff tentatively titled, Sam & Cat. The series will follow the girls’ characters, Sam Puckett from iCarly and Cat Valentine from Victorious, as they become roommates and start a
babysitting business. Sam & Cat will be produced by Dan Schneider, who is behind Nickelodeon shows iCarly, Victorious, Zoey 101 and Drake & Josh. “I couldn’t be under a better person’s wing, so I’m really happy about that decision,” McCurdy said in a recent interview. “I haven’t seen a script ... so I’m dying for information.” McCurdy describes taping the series finale of iCarly, which has won many awards and attracted a large following among adults as well as kids, as emotional. “The last day of shooting was really sad. There was a lot of crying and there were a lot of hugs going around. None of us wanted to say goodbye really.” Besides acting, McCurdy loves singing. She recorded a self-titled album with Capitol

Hopefully a different label will like to sign me.” She has spoken with Schneider about incorporat-
ing her music into Sam & Cat. The new show is expected to debut on Nickelodeon in the U.S. early in 2013. Many Nickelodeon shows, like iCarly, are carried on YTV and Nickelodeon Canada in Canada. McCurdy hopes that celebrities will appear on the new show, as they did on iCarly, which included guest spots by first lady Michelle Obama, Jimmy Fallon, One Direction and Jane Lynch. Who would be her ideal guest star? “Andrew Garfield. I’m gonna marry him,” she said with a laugh. “In my dreams maybe. Sorry, Emma Stone. Emma Stone was on iCarly. If she sees this, she’s gonna kill me. Oh my goodness. No. I love him though. I love his face. I love his hair! Andrew Garfield, I love you.” The associated press

Baby No. 4 for Hollywood power couple? Not if Garner can help it Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck recently welcomed their third child, son Samuel, and there’s apparently some disagreement in their house about whether or not their family is complete. “The fact that Ben wants another is true,” Garner tells Extra. “I can tell you that would be a
pretty uphill battle with me. I am not anticipating having any more kids.” That makes sense, considering Garner’s admission of how hectic baby No. 3 has made things. “It’s absolute chaos,” she says. “I really did not realize how much more work three was going to be than two.”

Barack Obama has seen the latest Batman movie, the Dark Knight Rises, and he knows which part he liked best: Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman. “She’s spectacular,” Obama told reporters, according to Hollyscoop. “She was the best thing in it. That’s just my personal opinion.”

Handling hot summer hair Get the look. With temperatures soaring, it’s the perfect time to sweep the mop off our sticky necks and up into a dreamy design TINA CHADHA
Metro World News in New York
We’re obsessed with the romantic braided crown that stylist and Redken Creative Consultant Guido Palau created for the Spring ’12 Valentino show. We headed to Cutler/ Redken Salons where stylist Jenny Balding gave us a step-bystep tutorial. Warning: You’ll need some French braiding skills and patience. Or better yet, find a girlfriend who will come over and do it for you.
1. Divide your hair into three sections: the front, the crown and the back. The finer the hair the thicker the sections need to be.
Tool of choice •
“Spray a dry shampoo — especially if you have fine hair — to your roots and mid length to add texture to your locks and for some more grip,” says Balding.

2. French braid the crown, braiding towards the right ear, and tie with a rubber band.
3. Braid the front section. Start from your left ear and work your way across the forehead until you get to behind the right ear.
4. Once your front braid has reached the right side, connect it with the crown braid.

5. Braid them into the remaining hair. Make sure to braid right down to the very tip. 6. Wrap the braid going from the left to right around your crown and pin. 7. Use three pins on each side and one in the center to secure your braid. 8. As you go through, pull some pieces out at the root to make your braids chunkier.

It’s probably something most people wouldn’t notice, but those are the things that drew him into fashion. “I have always been fascinated by fashion. TAKE A MUSICAL INTERLUDE TO PETERBOROUGH There will be much dancin’ in the streets of Peterborough this Saturday as the Sadies, The Dears and many other performers take the stage. It’s all part of the Hootenanny on Hunter Street Festival. The free party kicks off at noon. If indie rock music isn’t your scene, there’s also the Little Surf Band performing at the Little Lake Music Festival the same night. This summer beach band is one of many big acts appearing free at Del Crary Park this month (including former teen pop sensations Hanson on Aug. 25).
The beat doesn’t end there, though, as just east along Highway 7 is the Havelock Country Jamboree Showdown competition. This event is a tease for the big event happening the following weekend, when the likes of Roseanne Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Montgomery Gentry, Rita Coolidge, and Creedance Clearwater roll into town. Now it’s time to put some Neil Young on your weekend set list with a trip to the Youngtown Rock and Roll Museum in the music hall of famer’s hometown of Omemee. Inside the museum you will find photos,
instruments and other cool music artifacts from the 1950s and ’60s. Back in Peterborough, add to your vinyl library with a visit to Bluestreak Records, before checking out some up and coming rockers at The Red Dog bar. There are lots of heart of gold musical memories in the land of 1,000 perfect getaways – Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland. After only one visit, we’re sure that “Our Favourite Place” will become your favourite place.

Long may it wave. Flags make a colourful fashion statement at the London Olympics There was no mystery as to which team Varun Pemmaraju was supporting: His American flag was tied around his neck, the stars and stripes floating like a cape behind him. “I was going for the Superman, Captain America-look,” said the beaming 19-year-old computer science and chemical engineering student from San Jose, California, as he stood a stone’s throw from Olympic Stadium. “I thought America was a little underrepresented.” Patriotism and the Olympic Games have long gone together, but gone are the days when one just waved a flag. Now flags are worn. The fashion flags can be found at Olympic Park and around London as shift dresses and smocks, pants and shorts, hats and shoes, even dangly earrings and bracelets. There’s apparently no garment — nor nail polish — that can’t be fashioned into something akin to a national banner. Although the sponsorship police at the International Olympic Committee can stop merchants from using the five Olympic rings, there’s no trademark police on flags. Besides, capitalizing on a good fashion idea is not new. In recent years, “fast fashion” has transformed the retail industry, as mainstream companies seize the hottest ideas from the catwalk, copy

Football fans will soon be pulling out their jerseys, but a few have gotten a jump on the season. Serena Williams, Melania Trump and Condoleezza Rice are among the NFL fans who’ll be appearing in ads promoting team-themed apparel and gear next week in a campaign called It’s My Team. And these outfits aren’t just for game day. There are fitted blazers, burn-out T-shirts and earrings. In her ad, Williams — who is not only a fan but also a limited partner in the Miami Dolphins — wears her colours in a graphic T-shirt paired with

The image makes its debut in September magazines. “Forty-five per cent of fans are female and that continues to grow,” says Tracey Bleczinski, vice-president of NFL consumer products. “We do have something for everyone, and this campaign aims to communicate that if you are living and wearing football, you can do it every day, year-round.” After the photo shoot, Olympic swimmer and TV host Summer Sanders wore her outfit home, Bleczinski says, and that’s just what the NFL wanted. the associated press

Location and transit
Lindvest Properties has started construction for B.streets condos in the vibrant community at Bloor and Bathurst. Elegantly designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, it embodies a nine-storey residential complex on top of a retail level, comprised of 195 units and six townhouses built on the site of an old school.
Centrally located in the well-established Annex neighbourhood, the Bathurst TTC subway station is right outside your door, as well as light rail and bus services. Commuters can pick up the Gardiner Expressway at the foot of Bathurst and the downtown core is only a few minutes away. Five-year mortgage rates

Home prices set to slip 10 per cent over 2 to 3 years: Scotiabank Scotiabank says the Canadian housing market is beginning to cool, especially in what has been the red hot markets of Toronto and Vancouver. The bank says average Canadian home prices will eventually decline ten per cent over the next two to three years as demand softens and conditions for a buyers’ market re-emerge.
Senior economist Adrienne Warren says Canada is expected to avoid the sharp drop seen in the U.S., but that downside risks in the housing market are increasing. She says the price correction will be concentrated in Toronto and Vancouver, where supply risks and affordability pressures have the potential to trigger larger price adjustments. Record prices combined with tighter lending rules have reduced affordability and the housing market’s momentum. Affordability will also be increasingly strained when mortgage rates eventually drift up from the historic lows where they have been for several years.

Wouldn’t it be nice to see your boat from your balcony? Communities. Everyone has a fantasy lifestyle in mind — now you can live the dream with a variety of condo and townhome options duncan mcallister
life@metronews.ca
When a new home is built, the municipality usually has a “land only’ value for the property which is basically the value of the empty lot without a structure on it. Once the builder constructs your home the value of the lot goes up substantially for tax purposes. The issue at this point is that municipalities are behind in assessing the new value of the property and so they will often continue to issue ‘land only’ tax bills which are very comforting to the new owner but there is a hidden issue. Once the taxing authority gets around to assessing the property and giving it the appropriate taxing value, they will retroactively go back and tax the property from the date it was occupied. This could not only mean the time that you have owned the property, but also the previous owner who sold you the property. This is something you will require the assistance of your lawyer and a wee bit of patience because people who no longer own a property, generally are reluctant to pay taxes.
The lifestyle high-rise trend started in Toronto in the 1960s, and was the vision for Crescent Town at Victoria Park and Danforth avenues. Designed for the modern urbanite commuter, it was built adjacent to the Dentonia public golf course and had a covered walkway to the newly constructed Victoria Park subway station. Now golf course communities are sprouting up all over the GTA, like Perspective Condos, a new development by Pianosi Developments located at Scarlett Road and Eglinton. You can walk across the street to the Scarlett Woods golf course and tee off in minutes. If sailing is your thing, then the GTA’s numerous waterfront condominium communities will be sure to accommodate you, like Canderel’s Yacht Club condos located in Whitby Harbour opposite the picturesque Port Whitby Marina. I will be renting a room for the upcoming school year and I’d like it to be bright and fun without breaking the bank. Any ideas? Jenna Carter, via email The secret to creating a well-pulledtogether room on a budget is to keep all the colours of furniture and accessories consistent in style and colour. Your goal is not to have any one item stand alone to be recognized as a lesser expensive item. I suggest using some bright colours to give your room a personality all its own. Your wall colour and window treatment should match; Olympic Paints’ Mountain Stream is a green-blue colour that will create a peaceful environment yet vibrant enough to act as a backdrop to more vibrant colour choice for the furnishings and accessories.

Coffee clean up no difficult task How do you correctly clean a coffee maker and coffee pot? Donna Charles The butler

Dear Donna, Well the good news is that
this is relatively a simple process. Pour a few cups of white vinegar (five per cent alcoholic volume) into the coffee maker, nothing else. Let it sit for 10 minutes then turn on the coffee maker and run it through. Once finished, continue to run fresh clean water through the pipes of the coffee maker until the vin-

egar smell is totally gone. Now the coffee pot is cleaned the same way, by pouring white vinegar (five per cent alcoholic volume) into the coffee pot, let it stand for 30 minutes then rinse and wash with fresh clean water. If you do this at least monthly, this should stop the coffee maker and coffee pot from getting mineral build-up. Cleaning the coffee maker and coffee pot on a regular basis actually allows you to have a better cup of coffee, and keeps the machine in good working order.

Getting rid of pests the green way What’s the eco-friendliest way to get rid of ants in my house? -Kent of Montreal Queen of green
Lindsay Coulter green@metronews.ca
As a temporary fix, try diatomaceous earth. Say that three times fast! It said to be safer than using borax (sodium borate), especially if you have pets. Sprinkle a small amount of diatomaceous earth along cracks and baseboards, or above the cupboards. It’s a naturally occurring fine glasslike powder made from crushed fossilized algae. It is so abrasive that it damages the protective outer shell of creepy crawlies. When that protective exoskeleton is pierced, insects dry up and die. Ask for it at your local garden or hardware store. Warning: Carefully clean up diatomaceous earth with a damp rag instead of a vacuum to prevent clogging the filter. As with any problem, you’ll need to identify the source. For example, car-

penter ants love wet, rotting wood. When my home experienced an indoor ant invasion, it was due to the drain being clogged inside my refrigerator. Unable to drain properly, the water slowly leaked out the door, onto the floor and underneath the fridge — rotting the wood underneath. After tipping our fridge on its back and using an air compressor to remove the clog, my home is now ant-free. And for other natural and less toxic temporary solutions for silverfish, fleas, moths or roaches in the home try these home remedies: To repel silverfish, flies and moths, add a few drops of citronella essential oil and
lavender essential oil on cloth strips along windows or inside cupboards. Avoid using mothballs, which are made of toxic substances like naphthalene — a chemical associated with cancers. They’re also dangerous to children because they look like candy. Instead, store wool clothing and other garments with cedar blocks, cedar chips or in a cedar chest. Or, combine in a sachet two handfuls of dried lavender or rosemary herb with a tablespoon of dried clover and a tablespoon of dried lemon peel. Then toss these bundles into drawers, closets and cupboards. It smells nice to us, but not to moths!

Kim Sly, an artist in Portland, Ore., made her first city print several years ago for a friend relocating to New York. That led to a series, and the launch of her business. Pittsburgh, Atlanta, San Diego and Portland are part of the collection she sells atetsy.com/shop/ albiedesigns ($20-40). Sly’s whimsical illustrations are composites of elements she likes about a place. “I pay special attention
to a city’s architecture, and how it contributes to its individuality,” she says. “But I’m really looking for a more playful interpretation that people can identify with because of their love for their city.” As many of the designers suggest, these pieces would make terrific gifts. A disease by any other name could pose the same risk to other plants Powdery Mildew. Find the culprit’s true name to determine the solution As it does every year, a powdery white dusting is beginning to appear on the leaves of my lilac bush. Ah, if only this coloration were desirable, if we could affectionately refer to it as a silvery flecking or a sparkling sheen. But no, it’s dull white and it’s a sign of disease, one aptly called powdery mildew. Your lilac is also probably getting powdery mildew. And if you don’t grow lilac, you may have mildew developing on the leaves of your cucumber, rose, peony or phlox. You might worry that all that powdery mildew will spread from one plant to another all over your garden. But fear not, a few different kinds of fungi cause powdery mildew, and the one that attacks lilac bushes won’t attack every other plant — surely not your cucumber or rose plants. Unfortunately, that lilac powder mildew fungus can attack catalpa, dogwood and some other trees. The same goes for the fungus that turns zinnia leaves white with powdery mildew; it also preys on a slew of other garden flowers. Each of the powdery mildews attacks a restricted group of plants. Know your enemy Powdery mildew, like other common names of plant diseases, describes a symptom. Other descriptive common names for diseases are scab, leaf spot and brown rot. “Anthrac-
nose” describes a symptom not obvious from its name; plants afflicted with anthracnose have dead areas in leaves. Diseases having the same descriptive name are not necessarily all caused by the same “germs”, or even by germs related to each other. Blight of pear, for example, is caused by a bacterium, while blight of peony is caused by a fungus. The term “blight” is generally used for any disease that causes a plant or plant part to die suddenly. Descriptive names for plant diseases can get more specific. Fire blight is the blight attacking pear, so-named because blackened leaves cling to the curled-over stems as if they have been singed. The peony affliction is called botrytis blight, “botrytis” meaning grapelike and referring to the grapelike clusters of fungal spores as seen under magnification. Look closely The common name of a disease is the first step towards finding the culprit’s true name. I don’t fear that lilac will spread blight — whoops, I mean powdery mildew — to nearby phlox or peony because lilac’s disease is caused by the fungus Microsphaera alni, while phlox’s is caused by the fungus Erysiphe cichoracearum, and peony’s powdery mildew is caused by Erysiphe polygoni. In some cases, the common name may be all that’s needed to find out how to help a plant. “Westcott’s Plant Disease Handbook” by R. Kenneth Horst is a good reference to finding both the Latin name and the cure for just about any disease that might turn up in your garden.
The Organic Gardener’s Handbook of Natural Pest and Disease Control, by Fern Marshall Bradley, Barbara W. Ellis and Deborah L. Martin, presents a more organic approach to weeds, with less emphasis on nomenclature. Figuring out what a disease is called makes for better gardening because it forces a close look at just what’s going on. Next time something seems amiss with a plant, note first what part or parts are affected. Then characterize the symptoms with such descriptive terms as rust, rot, dieback, canker or leaf spot. Once named, what to do? Closer inspection brings on more descriptive names — brown rot or black rot, for example — or scientific names. Look at those ugly spots on your tomato plants’ leaves: Alternaria solani marks leaves with dark-brown, round spots a half-inch in diameter, each surrounded by concentric rings. Septoria lycopsersici causes spots that are small, round and grey, each surrounded by a single, dark margin. The cure for both is the same: Crop rotation and thorough garden clean up in the fall. Not all diseases need attention; powdery mildew does lilac little harm. And those that require attention, such as leaf spots of tomato, can be controlled by methods other than spraying. When spraying is needed for a particular disease, it might be something as benign as baking soda, 1 tablespoon added to a gallon of water along with 2 1/2 tablespoons of cooking oil. Bring rusted furniture back to life DIY ideas. That old metal furniture isn’t junk — show it some love and transform your seating area On DIY Network’s Turf Wars, two teams battle it out for $10,000 using the same batch of materials to transform their yards into spectacular outdoor spaces. These awesome transformations inspire bringing rusted metal furniture back to life; so, before passing old metal furniture off as junk, put in some weekend DIY love and give your outdoor seating area a whole new look. Follow the steps below to revive old outdoor metal furniture and be sure to trump any turf war. Set up the work area Place a drop cloth or large piece of cardboard over the floor to serve as your work area. Be sure to have the right tools on hand before getting started including a stiff wire brush, sanding block,
clean cloth, spray primer and spray paint. A clear spray lacquer can also be used to give the furniture a shiny finish. It is always important to have safety glasses and a mask to protect from spray fumes. Elbow grease Inspect the furniture to see if there is any cracked or peeling paint and brush it off with the wire brush. Once complete, use the sanding block to smooth out any rough spots while being careful not to scratch the metal. Now that all the prepwork is done, it’s time to bring the metal furniture back to life. Prime Wipe down the furniture using a damp cloth and allow to dry before applying the primer. Put on safety glasses and the mask and apply the spray primer to the furniture using a continuous circular motion. As a general rule, it’s always best to apply very light coats of primer instead of
drenching the metal. Let the primer dry overnight before applying any paint. From old to new Decide whether you want your furniture to make a fun, bold statement with a pink or green coat or whether you’d prefer a more classic white look for your outdoor space — there are many different colours of spray paint to choose from. Apply the chosen spray paint using the same continuous circular motion used when applying the primer. The best approach for this step is to apply many light coats of paint, letting each one dry before applying the next, until the desired colour is achieved; this should result in a smooth, even look. Once all coats have been applied, leave the furniture to dry overnight. Apply the final protective coat of spray lacquer if you want a shiny finish to complete the look. What was old is now new! Choosing to buy produce and other goods from local farmers and companies means your food is usually fresher. Jupiterimages/banana stock/thinkstock
Food and goods. Purchasing from farmers and companies in your region offers many benefits Astrid Van Den Broek For Metro
What does buying local mean? And how do you do it? We asked Jed Goldberg, president of Toronto-based Earth Day Canada, to share with us the goods on buying local. WHAT IS BUYING LOCAL? Buying local means purchasing food and goods produced by farmers and companies in your region. “There are all different qualifiers as to what is your region — your region could be Ontario for instance, or
southern Ontario, or it could be the 905 area,” he says. “It all depends on what your criteria are. But what it certainly couldn’t be is the Western Hemisphere!” WHY BUY LOCAL? Aside from driving money back into your region’s businesses, there are environmental factors to consider in considering buying local. When buying foods from overseas farmers, for example, there are environmental transportation costs and concerns that go into buying those goods. “There’s a good example right
now in China cornering the market on garlic,” notes Goldberg. “They’re now the No. 1 garlic producers in the world. So why would you buy garlic from China when you can buy it from Newmarket? It doesn’t make sense.” Goldberg adds that buying from producers abroad also means you often don’t know what type of farm or production facility your food comes from. The farms, he notes, could be mass factory facilities that might not be as closely monitored in environmental or quality standards compared to a local producer. Buying local also affords you food that
usually stays on the vines longer and is picked closer to selling time. “So then it’s usually going to be healthier, better tasting and more nutritious,” Goldberg says. “So you’re paying for the freshness and the quality of the food when you’re buying local, and not for the transportation, the packaging, the refrigeration and all of that.” HOW TO BUY LOCAL To scout some local goods, visit your local farmers’ market where you can purchase much more than in-season produce. Wimbledon junior champion Eugenie Bouchard is through to the second round of the women’s Rogers Cup. •
Andy Murray of Great Britain has had no time to rest since winning the Olympic gold medal on Sunday. But after doing extensive media interviews over the past few days, he was able to catch a flight to Toronto on Tuesday and played his first Rogers Cup match on Wednesday. doesn’t end there,” he said. “I wasn’t back at home until 2:30, did press for about two and a half, three hours after the match and the next morning started again at 8 for about another three, four hours.” Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France admitted he was also tired after losing his opening match. His 25-year-old countryman Jeremy Chardy, ranked 47th in the world, upset the sixthranked Tsonga 6-4, 7-6. “I think it’s not about my game,” he said. “You know my game is my game. The Flyers re-signed defenceman Marc-Andre Bourdon to a multi-year contract extension on Wednesday, and agreed with centre Scott Laughton on an entry-level contract. The news comes a day after Philadelphia’s defence took another hit, when Andrej Meszaros underwent surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon. Meszaros is out indefinitely. Bourdon, 22, was selected by the Flyers in the 2008 third round. He made his NHL debut with the Flyers last season, posting four goals and seven points in 45 games. Awesome day for Canada on Eton Dorney Canoe-kayak. Van Koeverden finds bright side in silver, Oldershaw buoyed by his bronze

Adam van Koeverden said he has “no idea” about his kayaking future. • “I don’t feel like I’m done
paddling. But I need some time away for it to know for sure,” said Van Koeverden.
• For his part, Mark Older-

time of my life here so I don’t know why I would want to stop,” he said.
Huynh battles to bronze with fortuitous clinches Canada’s Carol Huynh won a bronze medal in freestyle wrestling at the London Olympics on Wednesday while teammate Martine Dugrenier came up just short in her bid to reach the podium. Huynh, the 2008 Olympic champion, beat Isabelle Sam-
bou of Senegal to finish third in the 48-kilogram category. The Calgary wrestler won tiebreaking clinches after each of the two scoreless rounds. She said she was elated with the win. “I didn’t want it to end in two clinches but you know what, I’ll take it,” Huynh

said. “I wanted that bronze medal.” About a half-hour later, Dugrenier lost to Battsetseg Soronzonbold of Mongolia in the bronze medal bout at 63 kilograms. Soronzonbold stuffed Dugrenier’s attacking attempts and outscored her in both rounds. There was very little actual wrestling in Huynh’s last match as the grapplers spent most of the bout clutching and grabbing. After drawing the offensive position in both clinches, Huynh scored early on both occasions to take the rounds. Huynh missed out on a chance to wrestle for gold at ExCeL London North Arena 2 when she lost to Japan’s Hitomi Obara in the semifinals. The Canadian Press
Two friends with a ton of Olympic history made the canoe-kayak medal podium Wednesday. Adam van Koeverden won silver in kayak, his fourth medal in three Olympics, in the K-1 1,000 metres. And training partner Mark Oldershaw, a third-generation Olympian, claimed canoe bronze in the C-1 1,000 metres. Watching over both of them was proud coach Scott Oldershaw, Mark’s father. Van Koeverden, the reigning world champion, looked for the silver lining in silver. Oldershaw, who finished 10th in Beijing four years ago when nerves got the best of him, was bubbling over bronze. “(It feels) very heavy and it’s awesome,” a grinning Oldershaw said of the medal around his neck. “And I’m going to
wear it for a while.” After a blazing start, van Koeverden lost gold to friend and longtime training partner Eirik Veras Larsen of Norway in the final stretch. Larsen, 36, was the 2004 Olympic champion and 2008 silver medallist in the K-1 1,000. He also won bronze in the K-2 500 in Athens. Van Koeverden won gold and bronze at the Athens Games in 2004 and a silver in Beijing. The gold and silver came in the 500 metres — which has since been replaced by a 200-metre race — and the bronze in the 1,000. He was eighth in the 1,000 in 2008. The 30-year-old from Oakville admits Beijing was a hard pill to swallow. He had won a lot of races going into the 2008 Games and put a lot of pressure on himself. But he has matured over the years. Any disappointment Wednesday was tempered by respect for his rivals and knowing that you can’t win them all. Still, van Koeverden showed his steely side when asked if he

It’s OK.” The two Canadians won their medals in vastly different fashions. Van Koeverden rocketed out of the start and held the lead until Larsen ran him down as the finish approached. Oldershaw was a full second out of fourth place with 250 metres remaining but powered his way onto the podium. Whitfield broke collarbone in crash Injuries. Two-time Olympic medallist also needed stitches in big toe and hurt knees and shins in tumble
Simon Whitfield before the swim portion of the men’s triathalon on Tuesday. STEVE RUSSELL/TORStar News Service
Simon Whitfield broke his collarbone when he crashed on his bike in Tuesday’s Olympic triathlon. The 37-year-old from Victoria said via Twitter that it’s a “small break, not displaced.” Whitfield was forced to drop out of Tuesday’s race after he crashed spectacularly in a freak accident early in the bike leg.
In addition to the broken collarbone, Whitfield needed stitches in his big toe. He said his knees and shins were also banged up in the crash. Whitfield, the Olympic champion in 2000 and silver medallist in 2008, was considered a medal longshot in London. He was Canada’s flagbearer at the opening ceremony. Kayaker Adam van Koeverden, who won a silver medal Wednesday, said Whitfield had planned to come see him race but had to instead have an X-ray. “I was crying (Tuesday),” van Koeverden said of watching the race. “I was allowing myself to

does so much work. “Simon’s run, bike, swim and Jennie’s like diapers, laundry, daycare, cooking.” A tear ran down van Koeverden’s face as he was speaking. Van Koeverden wanted to honour Whitfield, who had put van Koeverden’s name on his handlebars, by putting the triathlete’s name on his boat for the final. “I didn’t have marker so I just wrote it with my finger on my (boat) deck,” van Koeverden said at the canoe-kayak venue outside of Windsor. “And I thought this one’s for the Whitfield legacy.” the canadian press

vestigation and will “co-operate fully.” “We will work closely with FIFA to ensure a prompt and fair resolution in this matter,” CSA president Victor Montagliani said in a release. Canada conceded the winning goal in stoppage time at the end of extra time in a thrilling match at Old Trafford. The team’s players and coach were angered by referee Christiana Pedersen awarding an indirect free kick against goalkeeper Erin McLeod that led to the Americans’ 80thminute equalizer. McLeod was whistled for holding the ball longer than six seconds, and the resulting shot from the U.S. free kick was judged to have been handled by a Canadian defender. Abby Wambach scored the penalty to make the score 3-3. The canadian Press

Canada players are clear to start the bronze-medal match at the Olympic women’s soccer tournament because a FIFA probe into their behaviour won’t be completed before the game kicks off Thursday. FIFA is investigating “incidents that occurred” following Canada’s 4-3 semifinals loss against the United States on Monday. Canada players, including forward Christine Sinclair who scored all three of her team’s goals, were openly critical of the Norwegian match referee. However, FIFA said Wednesday that its disciplinary panel cannot prosecute the case before Canada plays France for bronze. “In view of the elements currently at its disposal, the FIFA disciplinary committee considers that further investigation will be needed regarding

Defending champs spiked out of London by Italy The defending Olympic champion U.S. men’s volleyball team was eliminated from the London Games with a straight-set quarter-final loss to Italy on Wednesday. The fifth-ranked United

States struggled to defend Italian captain Cristian Savani, who had 19 points in the 28-26, 25-20, 25-20 victory for the sixth-ranked Italians. U.S. setter Donald Suxho bent over with his hands on his knees and shook his head as Italy celebrated the win at Earls Court. And after congratulating the Italians, the Americans turned to applaud the many U.S. fans in
the crowd. The United States won the gold medal in Beijing, upsetting favourite Brazil 3-1. It was their third gold in men’s volleyball, which became an Olympic sport in 1964. Russia is the only other nation with three golds. Italy has never won the Olympic gold, but the teams has won silver twice, most recently at the 2004 Athens Games. The Associated Press

Track and field. Usain Bolt strikes for easy win in 200-metre semifinal heat Usain Bolt is one victory away from becoming the first man to repeat as double Olympic sprint champion and reaching his ambition of becoming a “living legend” after he qualified for the 200 metrefinal. On a balmy, clear Wednesday night, Bolt joked as he got into the blocks, laughed when he crouched into the blocks and then sped away for a controlled race which he finished by almost jogging across the line. His win exuded as much confidence as his victory in the 100 on Sunday. This time, too, everything is set for a direct duel with his training partner Yohan Blake, the silver medallist in

the 100. The 100 should have been the tough part for Bolt where
his starting jitters have been an issue. The 200 is his preferred distance and it showed. He made a military-style salute when he was announced to the crowd, reggae music blaring in the background. After his race, he applauded another capacity crowd of 80,000 at the Olympic Stadium. Blake had the fastest time with 20.01 seconds, compared with 20.18 for Bolt. “It’s the 200 metres and we are both full speed tomorrow,” Blake said. “Anything can happen.” After Thursday’s 200 final, Bolt still has the weekend relays coming up.
