Kelly’s future still unclear

Speculation Mayor Peter Kelly may not be done with life in the public service has run rampant this week, with rumours suggesting he is considering a run for the Bedford council seat. During an MS Society fundraiser at the Woodside A&W Thursday, Kelly told Metro he hadn’t changed the decision to not reoffer as mayor, but he also seemed to suggest he hadn’t ruled anything else out. “So many of the public over the last few weeks at different events have been very supportive, and everybody wants to know, but there’s no decision made on anything whatsoever,” he said. Earlier this week, Coun. Tim Outhit said rumours suggest Kelly is considering challenging him for the council seat in Bedford. “I’ve heard from several parties that the mayor is putting out feelers,” Outhit told Metro on Monday. Kelly said he’s also heard rumours he’s running for not only council, but political office at both the provincial and fed-

eral levels, and said he’s been approached about several opportunities, which may be fuelling the speculation. Kelly did not say definitively he’s not running for anything, and continued to reiterate he hasn’t made any decisions about plans for or after the election. “You never say never — again, this is politics — but you also try not to mislead or alter courses of action,” he said. “I’ve been approached on a couple of things and also looking at what options may or may not be there, but there has been no decision made whatsoever.” Kelly was a popular councillor in Bedford before becoming mayor of Bedford and then of HRM after an amalgamation in 1995. He announced he would not re-offer as mayor in February following media coverage of his handling of a friend’s estate. ruth davenport/metro

Ticket sales

Bruce not drawing them in as anticipated

An Atlantic music-industry insider says Sunday’s Bruce Springsteen concert might be a little smaller than originally anticipated, but it will still be a success. Promoter Donald K. Donald recently added two opening acts to the lineup, prompting speculation ticket sales might not be on target. Cole McLean of Atlantic Canada Rocks tells Metro Halifax DKD revised ticket forecasts last week to about half of the original targets. “Back in June, I heard rumours they’d only sold 10,000, but I think it’s considerably much more than that now,” he said. “And, with the sunny weather, we should have quite a big walkup.” McLean says walkup sales are usually a significant factor at Maritime events, noting the AC/DC concert in 2009 saw sales soar past 70,000 on the strength of last-minute purchases. Tickets are roughly $135 apiece after taxes, which might seem steep for some — but McLean says Springsteen makes sure his fans get their money’s worth. “He plays shows always between three and four and a half hours,” he said. “I don’t know how long the Moncton show will be, but every show has had an average of 30 songs, some as high as 36.” Tickets are still available online via tickets. moncton. ca. RUTH DAVENPORT

Four Dartmouth women are hoping family history will be repeated at Sunday’s Bruce Springsteen concert in Moncton. Sarah Hart and her sisters, Nicole, Andrea and Irene, have launched a social-media campaign to get them invited backstage for a photo with the Boss. If successful, the feat will

duplicate their father’s successful backstage foray at a Springsteen concert 20 years ago, which resulted in a photograph that’s now his prized possession. “We’re so pumped for this. We just want to be as cool as our dad,” said Hart. “It would be amazing if we could.” Hart says her father, Andrew, is the “ultimate Springsteen fan,” having sneaked backstage during the 1992

Lucky Town show in Toronto to mug with the legendary rocker. The four sisters have created a YouTube video and Facebook page devoted to catching the promoter’s attention — and getting a photo of their own. Hart says reception so far has been positive, and she’s pretty determined to give the enterprise her best shot — though she’s prepared for disappointment.

“We feel like we probably won’t be able to get backstage now. Four girls is probably a bit harder to do than one person,” she said. “If we don’t, we don’t. We’ll have fun at the concert anyway.” The sisters grew up listening to Springsteen songs, and Hart says the concert will be a once-in-a-lifetime event for the four siblings regardless of whose photo is taken with whom. Still, she’s urging anyone who might be able to make a difference to take up their cause. “Just make four girls’ dream come true,” she said. “We’re so pumped for this, we just want to be as cool as our dad. Think of your dad and the funnest thing you could do for him.”

Shell says its seeking oil, not natural gas Offshore. Calgarybased company could reconsider N.S. venture Shell Canada says it would reconsider its future plans to develop Nova Scotia’s offshore if its $970-million deepwater-exploration venture turned up natural gas instead of oil. Erik B. Goodwin, Shell’s venture leader for its deepwater Nova Scotia operations, said Thursday that the company’s goal in exploring the province’s southwestern offshore is to find oil. “If we were to find gas, we would have to take a really hard look at it because the economics are so poor,” Goodwin said following a speech to the Maritimes Energy Association in Halifax. He said it would be difficult for the Calgary-based company to profit off natural gas in Nova Scotia. “One of the principle roles of deepwater exploration is for oil and that’s an important part of Shell’s global portfolio,” Goodwin said.

Exploration rights

In January, Shell announced a six-year agreement to explore four deepwater areas about 200 kilometres from the province’s southwest coast. Its winning bid was the highest for exploration rights ever awarded in Atlantic Canada.

“There are other ways to make money with deepwater in gas but it would be very difficult here.” He said companies in Australia’s offshore make a profit from liquefying natural gas from deep-well drilling, but following that route in Nova Scotia wouldn’t be as lucrative and would involve a large investment. Barbara Pike, the executive director of the Maritimes Energy Association, said she’s not surprised Shell’s focus is on oil. “It’s what we said from Day 1,” she said. “When you put in an exploration bid of $970 million on four offshore parcels, you’re not looking for natural gas. You’re looking for oil.”

A raw-sewage pumping station in Halifax’s south end has resumed operation after a weekend flooding. Halifax Water spokesman James Campbell confirmed Thursday the Pier A pumping station located off Barrington Street at Inglis Street resumed operations around noon on Thursday. The station was taken off-line by Dexter Construction, which owns and operates the asset, on Saturday, sending the sewage into the Halifax harbour. “What happened was a pipe fitting popped off in the pumping station, and some material was discharged into the station,” said Campbell. “They’ve been working on it since Saturday, and as of noon (Thursday) they got flow back into the plant, and it’s pumping flow again to the Halifax treatment plant.” Campbell could not say how extensive the flooding was, reiterating it was Dexter Construction’s responsibility. The superintendent who oversaw years of provincial funding cuts at the Halifax Regional School Board will be Education Minister Ramona Jennex’s new deputy minister. Carole Olsen, who has served as HRSB’s superintendent of schools and CEO for 10 years, revealed Thursday she has accepted an appointment to be Jennex’s second-in-command. Jennex said the province led a robust national search before selecting the local administrator, who has previously worked as a teacher and the superintendent of the Toronto District School Board. It’s unusual for the provincial government to hold press conferences for newly appointed deputy ministers, but it might have something to do with the difficult job Olsen is stepping into. “Someone offered me congratulations recently, and I Next steps

cation, Olsen referred to the need to find “efficiencies.” Two years ago, Olsen found herself in the headlines when a video of former Graham Creighton Junior High principal Ken Fells grappling with a student was leaked to the media by her husband. Fells was removed from his position at the school after the video was released. Olsen will be paid $165,000 for her efforts as deputy, a $19,000 raise from her current salary.

ECBC wants to help Cape Breton businesses capitalize on projects Cashing in. Halifax Shipbuilding contract among the incoming projects to be studied

“If there’s going to be hundreds of millions of dollars spent, then let’s see how much of it we can take for Cape Breton companies.” Marlene Usher, executive director of Enterprise Cape Breton Corp.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corp. will commission a study of several major projects coming to Cape Breton in hopes of helping the local business community benefit from them. The requests for proposals to conduct the study of the Muskrat Falls project, Donkin mine and the national shipbuilding projects are due Monday. The three-fold study will first attempt to understand the scope of these major projects and what elements of them could involve Cape Breton companies. A second aspect is to establish a database of all the companies that have the capacity to participate in these components.

“The third aspect would be what gaps are there in training and how we can we play a role in helping companies take advantage of the opportunities,” said Marlene Usher, executive director of ECBC. “We really want to just help the companies take advantage of the opportunities.” For Cape Breton, the Muskrat Falls project will involve the laying of submarine cables from Newfoundland and Labrador to Cape Breton and the construction of a transmission station at a cost of about $1.2 billion. Construction of combat vessels by the Irving Ship-

yard in Halifax has been tabbed at $25 billion over 30 years, while the Donkin mine could bring 382 direct and 428 indirect jobs to Cape Breton along with $100 million in annual operating costs. “If there’s going to be hundreds of millions of dollars spent, then let’s see how much of it we can take for Cape Breton companies. That’s really the idea behind it,” said Usher. After all requests for proposals are received Monday, they’ll be reviewed for quality and price before a firm is selected to conduct the study. Talbot House board opts out of treatment centre proposal

Talbot House treasurer Jim Gogan, left, and board member Irene Khattar at the Cape Breton Post Thursday. Cape Breton Post

The board of directors of Talbot House has decided not to take part in the current request for proposals for a Cape Breton residential treatment centre from the Department of Community Services. Members of the board cited unrealistic timelines and a process that would pull Talbot House in an “uncomfortable” direction for the decision during an editorial board meeting with the Cape Breton Post on Thursday. Talbot House, the island’s only residential treatment centre for men with addictions, closed its doors in March after a community services report

raised a number of concerns about its operations. The request for proposals for a new centre began Aug. 1, just weeks after Community Services Minister Denise Peterson-Rafuse decided to postpone it. “It was nothing short of an agonizing decision but there were realities for us in terms of why we made that decision,” said Irene Khattar, a Talbot House board member. “It’s important that we share that with the broader community.” Jim Gogan, treasurer of the board, pointed to three overarching reasons, including the

timeline to meet the request for proposals deadline of Aug. 28 “It’s over 50 pages and cross-references another 60 pages of material that should

be reviewed to lead into your proposal,” he said. “We are a volunteer board of less than 10. It would be a Herculean effort — not that we are not prepared to do that, but I think it might be beyond the scope of our capacity to pull a reasonable proposal together within the timeline.” More importantly, he said, the request for proposals would move Talbot House into a fundamentally different direction. “For example, it references partnerships and relationships with methadone treatment programs, things of that nature.” Cape Breton Post

As she was preparing to drive off the boat arriving in Prince Edward Island that day, the mother’s worst nightmare started to unfold as she heard her 20-month-old daughter Nova start to gag and cough in the backseat. Pizza-joint attack turns into chase Halifax police have arrested an 18-year-old man after responding to an attempted robbery at a pizza joint in Lower Sackville on Wednesday night. Police say a man wearing a mask went into Primo Pizza at 225 Cobequid Rd., tried to rob staff and then sprayed a mace-like irritant prior to leaving on foot. Police were called and saw a person running near the area. A lengthy chase ensued, which included the help of a police dog, in the areas of Caudle Park school off of Glendale Avenue. Finally, at about 2 a.m., police say they nabbed the man and he was arrested. metro

The girl threw up and continued to cough, then stopped, seemingly unable to breathe, Wilkinson said. “Somebody help! My daughter is choking!” she screamed. MacLean, a member of the New Glasgow Fire Department and a St. John Ambulance Emergency First Aid instructor, just so happened to be parked in the car behind and watched as the events unfolded. Hearing her scream, he rushed to

her aid. “I can help,” he told her and plucked the small child from her arms. Nova’s lips were turning grey and he knew she needed help immediately. Using the knowledge he had learned and taught dozens of times in the past, he gave Nova two quick hits on the back. In all the years he has been studying first aid, he had never had to perform the Heimlich manoeuvre on a child. “Gee whiz — I hope this works,” he remembers thinking to himself. Almost instantly a coin flew from the child’s mouth and clanged on the floor of the ferry. “It was a real happy sound to hear that quarter hit the floor,” said MacLean. On Aug. 18, police say they received a complaint of sexrelated offences over an eightmonth period between the teen victim and a 66-year-old man. An investigation was launched and there were two searches Wednesday — first at a residence in Bayside and later at a business in Halifax. Police say at the business they seized electronic storage devices containing child pornography, while at the home two long-barelled firearms were located.

New project launched Order of Canada. Black capable defending his membership to find ill-fated ships of in writing, federal lawyers say Nunavut. Inuit oral tradition has been key for previous searches seeking the lost Franklin expedition

Details

Conrad Black has a way with words, government lawyers say, and the Order of Canada advisory council is well aware of that — he gave them a copy of his latest book. Federal lawyers are set to argue in court Friday that Black should have no trouble making written arguments to the council deciding the status of his Order of Canada membership, documents show. Black, 67, is asking Federal Court to force the advisory council to allow him an oral hearing as it decides whether to recommend the Governor General revoke Black’s prestigious membership, bestowed upon him in 1990.

• The federal government is contributing $275,000 to the new expedition, with additional costs being picked up by private partners.

The search for the lost ships of the ill-fated Franklin expedition continues. A new research project was announced Thursday by the prime minister in Nunavut, where the ships are believed to have sunk. “Why do we search for the Franklin? The wreckage of the Franklin expedition is a national historic site designated some time ago — it is the only undiscovered national historic site, we feel an obligation to discover it,” Stephen Harper said. Sir John Franklin set out from England in 1845 to find the Northwest Passage with two ships, the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. But they ended up trapped in ice, and Franklin, along with other crew members, died in 1847. The next year, the surviving crew set out on foot but were never seen alive again. All this is known thanks to a message left in a cairn on

King William Island, and while the message suggested where the two ships might have been when they were abandoned, previous attempts to find the wrecks have been unsuccessful. In 2010, a search team did find the remains of the HMS Investigator, sent in 1850 to find Franklin. The unknown final resting place of the ships was declared a national historic site in 1992, though the ships will remain the property of the United Kingdom. The search areas will include both the O’Reilly Island area, west of the Adelaide Peninsula and further north to Victoria Strait and Alexandra Strait.

2010,” said Dr. Howard Njoo of the Public Health Agency of Canada. “The other interesting thing is the vast majority of cases are among men.”

Alberta town escalates battle against rats

His lawyers are arguing that his case is too complex to be handled in writing — the only medium Order of Canada rules allow. The former media magnate went to Federal Court after his request to make arguments in person was denied. But documents filed in advance of Friday’s hearing show federal lawyers are relying on Black’s own prowess with prose to argue that he doesn’t need oral arguments to make his voice heard. The council can recommend members of the order be stripped of their status, but the final decision rests with the Governor General.

Officials in Medicine Hat, Alta., think it could take two years to clear the city of rats. The municipality has announced it’s stepping up its war on the rodents with a new strategy called “Operation Haystack.” Ed Jollymore, the city’s waste manager, says baited hay bales will be scattered around Medicine Hat to attract and kill the vermin with a poison that won’t harm people or pets. Officials fretted over war game The administrative wing of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office worried about the optics of hundreds of Canadian troops taking part in a major NATO-sponsored Arctic war game in northern Norway earlier this year. Conservatives have made rebuilding the military, more international involvement and a more muscular presence in the North key policy touchstones. But senior federal officials told the army last fall they weren’t sure the country should participate in Exercise Cold Response. It took the intervention of the assistant deputy minister of policy at National Defence to smooth the way for the army’s participation, reassuring senior government officials that were “no policy obstacles” that contradicted Government of Canada procedures.

Drought deepens in Midwest Report. Farmers tally losses as states reliant on agriculture receive extreme or exceptional drought classifications On the day a new report suggested the nation’s worst dry spell in at least a generation is deepening in America’s breadbasket, Nebraska farmer Doug Nelson said Thursday he expects to harvest anywhere from nothing to 43 bushels per acre on his unirrigated acreage — a far cry from the 120 to 140 bushels he’d typically get. On the irrigated land, he could see 150 to 200 bushels an acre; in previous years, Nelson would see a minimum of 180 bushels. “But we’ll have the com38 years

“For the most part, we haven’t seen a hit like this since 1974, as far as my career goes.” Nebraska farmer Doug Nelson

bines going here in probably another month, and then we’ll know for sure,” said the 61-year-old Nelson, who farms some 5,000 acres near Wayne. The U.S. Drought Monitor’s weekly map showed that, as of Tuesday, just over two-thirds of Iowa, the nation’s biggest corn producer, was in extreme or exceptional drought — the worst two classifications. That’s up more than five percentage points, to 67.5 per cent, from the previous week. Nearly all of Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois are in extreme or exceptional drought, with Illinois showing the most dramatic climb, spiking 17 percentage points in one week to 96.72 per cent, according to the map. On Wednesday, the USDA added 33 counties from eight drought-stricken states to its list of natural disaster areas, bringing that tally to 1,821 counties in 35 states over the past six weeks. That’s more than half of all U.S. counties. Plains farmers have begun harvesting what corn managed to survive, although many growers cut their fields weeks ago, chalking the year up as a loss. the associated press

Dominican Republic, Haiti brace for tropical storm Tropical Storm Isaac took aim at the Dominican Republic and Haiti Thursday and it was expected to gain strength after drenching tiny islands in its whirl over the eastern entrance to the Caribbean. There was a chance it could dump rain on next week’s Republican convention in Florida. No major damage was reported, but authorities in Puerto Rico said an elderly woman

died in an accident while preparing for the storm. U.S. forecasters said Isaac was likely to approach Hispaniola, the island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti, as a hurricane late Thursday or early Friday after intensifying over the warm waters of the Caribbean. It was predicted to move on to Cuba as a tropical storm, then Monday perhaps head to Florida, where the Re-

publicans will be gathering to nominate Mitt Romney for the presidency. At the bar of the Fort Young Hotel in Dominica’s coastal capital of Roseau, a few tourists and locals drank cold beer and chatted over the sound of white-crested waves outside. “The skies were very black and cloudy most of the day, but it’s been pretty quiet so far. Some rain, very little wind,”

bartender Raymond Reynolds said Wednesday at the 71-room hotel on the jagged, densely forested island. “We’ve been through this before.” As a precaution, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit urged people to stay home from work. Authorities banned boats from entering its waters and warned of heavy rains from Thursday through Saturday.

The new fraud: ‘E-mules’ play catch me if you can, and make crime pay Crime. Forget Leonardo DiCaprio’s cheque forger in the Hollywood movie. Today’s fraudsters are cunning entrepreneurs who are enlisting everyday citizens to launder money elisabeth braw

Metro World News

“In money laundering there’s a rule,” Ken Rijock says: “You’re only limited by your imagination.” Rijock, a Miami lawyer, knows what he’s talking about: He laundered $200 million in Colombian drug money and served a prison sentence for it, too. Now Rijock wants to warn others about the money laundering going on right under their noses. “The money launderers work very hard,” he says, “and now they don’t even have to get on a plane to go to a tax haven. Now we have the Internet, which is making their job easy.” And the Internet has given rise to a new kind of mule: The e-mule. “E-mules are an emerging trend,” says Mauro Falesiedi, senior specialist on economic crimes at Europol, the European police agency. “We’ve had money mules crossing the border with cash for a long time, but now we also have e-mules,

“It’s next to impossible to catch money launderers.” Ken Rijock

who are recruited to help transfer fraudulently obtained money.” Unlike the old-fashioned mule, e-mules don’t have to carry anything like drugs, weapons or other contraband: They just lend criminals their name. “As an e-mule, you’re a law-abiding citizen who lets criminals borrow your bank account to transfer money,” Falesiedi says. “Obviously you get paid — often 10 per cent of the amount. The emules are often students or persons with no judicial background.” Organized crime groups from Russian and Ukraine are among those setting up money-laundering schemes with the assistance of emules. According to the Financial Action Task Force, an intergovernmental organization, criminals are also using e-mules in casinos and in currency-exchange bureaus. But old-fashioned cash smuggling continues, too, as does money laundering through real-estate and shell companies. In theory, banks can easily spot an e-mule. “If you’re a student and usually have something like $400 in your bank account, and all of a sudden you get $10,000 from a Nigerian account,

Are they e-mules, too? Leonardo DiCaprio, shown with stewardesses in the film Catch Me If You Can, played a con artist who cashed $2.5 million in fraudulent cheques in the 1960s. The film was based on a true story, but modern-day fraud offers far more opportunities for crooks. courtesy of dreamworks

that should normally raise a red flag and generate a financial disclosure to the competent domestic authorities,” Falesiedi says. But the reality is different. “It’s next to impossible to catch money launderers,” says Rijock, who now helps police catch them. “The only way is if the police catch one criminal and he leads them to others.” Many banks do the bare minimum, he says. “They don’t train their staff to catch money launderers. The banks don’t want to be the policemen of the world.”

Q&A

Fine art and virtual gaming E-mules are a new moneylaundering trend. What other new techniques do money launderers use? They like to divert non-monetary items into monetary items and back again. One method they’re using a lot right now is to buy artworks then sell them back to themselves again

and again. They also use things like virtual gaming, where you can turn virtual money into real money. There’s no question that people unknowingly help them. In the world of money laundering there’s always duplicity involving unwitting participants. Why is it so hard to catch money launderers? Money laundering is a secondary crime. It’s always connected to prostitution, the drug trade or arms

trade. When people are caught for those primary crimes they’re often simply put behind bars. And money laundering is one of the most entrepreneurial crimes. Money leads to money. Money launderers can become legitimate businessmen using their illegal proceeds as seed money. michael hearns Former undercover FBI agent, who posed as a money launderer

The 20th-century Ecce Homo-style fresco of Christ before, left, and after an amateur artist tried to restore it. A priest had asked her to touch it up. Centro de estudios Borjanos/the associated press

Amateur artist in Spain ruins fresco of Christ Borja, Spain. Priest asked the elderly parishioner to touch up the painting The distraught 81-year-old woman who turned a damaged fresco on a church wall in Spain into an international joke says she’d been asked to fix the painting by the local priest. “Everybody who came into the church could see we were painting,” an aghast Cecilia Gimenez told the Spanish TV

station RTVE. “We’ve always repaired everything here,” she said. “Of course, it was the priest” who asked her to touch up the portrait of Jesus Christ that hung in the Santuario de Misericordia in the small town of Borja near Zaragoza in northeastern Spain. The painting, widely misrepresented as a “valuable 19-century fresco,” is actually the 20th-century work of a local man, Elias Garcia Martinez, with mostly sentimental value. Locals say professional restorers have been called in to look at the damage.

The amateur restorer said she hadn’t finished her work. Hence, the classic blueeyed religious styling of Christ now features a twodimensional cartoon of a smeared face with his crown of thorns turned into a furry cap. The new version has triggered an Internet name the portrait, some starting with “Your Face Here” and the most popular plastering Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean over the damage. The painter’s granddaughter said she had given the church money to restore it properly. torstar news service

Hot-air-balloon crash kills four in Slovenia Caught in a storm. Similar aircraft are used in Kenya, South Africa and Australia The hot-air balloon that crashed in Slovenia was one of the largest of its kind in the world. Tourists who are willing to pay more than $100 each to be crammed aboard the capsules of such balloons often enjoy sightseeing adventures over the Slovenian Alps and its lakes. But the giant balloons aren’t always easy to operate. On Thursday, one was swept up in a storm and crashed in a fireball outside Slovenia’s capital, killing four of its 32 riders and injuring the rest. The hot-air balloon is the oldest successful flight technology that carries passengers. Crashes • Balloon accidents occur for

a variety of reasons, but human error and the decision to fly during weather warnings are frequently cited as a primary cause. There were rare cases where an accident was attributed to failure of the balloon hardware.

• Slovenia has had two ma-

jor ballooning accidents in recent years. In 2002, one caught fire and nine people were injured. In 2006 four people were hurt when a balloon crashed.

Members of the emergency services survey the site of a hot-air-balloon crash near Ljubljana, Slovenia, Thursday. A hot-air balloon carrying 32 people, was swept up in a storm and crashed in a fireball, killing four people. Matej Leskovsek/the associated press

A hot-air balloon consists of a bag called the envelope that contains heated air. Suspended beneath it is a gondola, or in some highaltitude balloons, a capsule. A source of heat for the air in the balloon in most cases is

an open-flame blower. Thursday’s flight offered a ride from near the capital, Ljubljana, and over the Alpine scenery toward Bled, the most popular tourist resort in Slovenia. The Associated Press

Politician hijacks miners’ memorial South Africa. Ministers accused of complicity in shootings last week that killed 34 striking miners and wounded 78 A fiery politician cast out of the ruling party Thursday hijacked the main memorial service for 34 striking miners killed by police, to accuse President Jacob Zuma’s government of complicity in the shootings. Angry government ministers walked out. Zuma did not attend any of the services. He called a news conference to announce a retired supreme court judge will head a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate “the facts and circumstances which gave rise to the use of force and whether this was reasonable and justifiable in the particular circumstances.” He announced a wide range of issues for the commission to investigate, including the role of London-

registered Lonmin PLC, which owns the platinum mine where the violence was sparked by union rivalry. The commission would look at Lonmin’s conduct and report “whether the company, by act or omission, created an environment which was conducive to the creation of tension, labour unrest, disunity among its employees or other harmful conduct,” Zuma said.

The sombre and grieving tone of the memorial service at the mine was shattered by Julius Malema, who was expelled in April for sowing disunity in the African National Congress. Malema was applauded when he said the government has not intervened in the mines “because our leaders are involved in these mines.” He said that President Zuma’s foundation and other ANC leaders have shares in the mines. “Our government has become a pig that is eating its children,” charged Malema. Malema’s outburst came after church leaders had urged people not to use the memorial service to score political points. About a dozen cabinet ministers left before they could address the crowd of more than 1,000 at the mine at Marikana, 70 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg. Zuma had decreed a week of national mourning to honour all victims of violence in South Africa, which has one of the world’s highest murder and rape rates. the associated press

Inequality

Shootings spotlight growing anger Last week’s shootings were the worst display of state violence since apartheid ended in 1994 and have thrown the spotlight on growing anger at South Africa’s massive inequality, poverty and unemployment. The violence unfolded as some 3,000 rock-drill operators demanded a minimum wage of 12,500 rand ($1,560 US). The poorest 10 per cent of the population shares 1.1 billion rand while the country’s richest 10 per cent has 381 billion, the Congress of South African Trade Unions said Thursday. In a statement it claimed Lonmin’s financial officer is paid 152 times as much as a rockdrill operator at the mine. It claimed the operators earn only 5,600 rand though researchers who work with miners say they make at least 10,000 rand. the associated press

Opinion poll skewed: Zimbabwe PM’s party The Zimbabwe prime minister’s party says a new opinion poll reflecting a surge in support for President Robert Mugabe’s party was skewed by a “margin of terror” that saw nearly half those questioned refusing to disclose their political loyalties. Douglas Mwonzora, spokesman for Prime Min-

ister Morgan Tsvangirai’s party, said Thursday that U.S.-based Freedom House poll is “unreliable” in a climate where voters face intimidation by Mugabe militants and loyalists dominating the police and military. In a 54-page report, Freedom House said support for

Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party rose to 31 per cent from 17 per cent in the past 18 months, but dropped for Tsvangirai’s party from 38 per cent to 20 per cent. It said 1,198 Zimbabweans were polled with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 per cent. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Colorado shooting. Suspect was banned from university, prosecutors tell court Prosecutors say the suspect in the Colorado theatre shooting made threats and was banned from the University of Colorado after failing a key exam six weeks before the rampage. They made the accusations about James Holmes in court Thursday as they tried to convince a judge to let them see records from the university, where Holmes had been a graduate student. They also claim professors had urged Holmes to get into another line of work before the shooting. Attorney Karen Pearson didn’t disclose where their information came from, and prosecutors did not give further details on the nature of the threats. Judgment day: Breivik’s mental state will be focus of court ruling Norway massacre. On Friday, the confessed mass killer will learn his fate — but if he’s declared insane, he’ll appeal ‘on the spot’

Education records sought

• Prosecutors are seeking non-medical education records turned over last week to an Arapahoe County district judge. • They have said they need the documents to gain access to a notebook reportedly containing violent descriptions of an attack.

Anders Behring Breivik’s defence lawyers say the confessed mass killer won’t appeal if he’s sentenced to prison but he will challenge any ruling that declares him insane. Breivik’s mental state will be the focus when the Oslo district court presents its judgment against Breivik on Friday for the bomb and gun attacks that killed 77 people and injured more than 200 in July last year. After deliberating for two months, a five-judge panel will decide whether to send the right-wing extremist to prison or a mental hospital. After speaking to Breivik on Thursday, defence lawyer Geir Lippestad said his client would only appeal if committed to psychiatric care. “He is very clear that if he is deemed insane, he will appeal, and appeal on the spot,” Lippestad said. appeals trial would likely be held early next year. Breivik, who claims he is a “militant nationalist,” said during the trial that being sent to an insane asylum would be the worst thing that could happen to him and accused Norwegian authorities of trying to cast him as sick to deflate his political views. His lawyers say Breivik is already at work writing sequels to the 1,500-page manifesto he released on the Internet before the attacks. Regardless of the sentence, Breivik will be taken back to Oslo’s Ila Prison, where he has been held in isolation for most of the time since his arrest. The prison has built a psychiatric ward just for Breivik in case he’s declared insane. But even if he is, he wouldn’t be placed in that unit if he immediately appeals the insanity ruling, said prison spokeswoman Ellen Bjercke. The associated Press

Hippo stuck in reserve’s swimming pool Driven out of herd. Staff say young Harry is noticeably relaxed with no other hippos fighting it for dominance A hefty hippo chased away from his herd at a South African game reserve has found a refreshing place to relax: the lodge’s swimming pool. Now it’s stuck there. The young hippopotamus plopped into the pool on Tuesday at the Monate Conservation Lodge north of Johannesburg. The pool is big enough for the hippo to

swim but it’s eight feet deep with no steps and “there’s no way he can come out,” lodge manager Ruby Ferreira said Thursday. A game capture team will sedate the hippo and lift it out of the pool with a crane, said MuIsabel Wentzel of South Africa’s National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Much of the water has already been drained to make the extraction easier. A veterinarian will be present during operation hippo extraction on Friday. Wentzel said the four-yearold hippo’s mother gave birth recently, and more dominant males forced him from the herd. The staff has been feeding

Facebook rolls out improved mobile app New version. No integration of Instagram yet, but latest update for smartphones and tablets focuses on being speedier On Thursday, Facebook addressed users who had gripes with its app for iPhones and iPads with the launch of a faster version. Rather than add a slew of new features, the company said it rebuilt the application from scratch to make it speedier and less clunky. In a recent demonstration at the company’s headquarters, the new iPhone app opened about twice as fast as the older version. Photos

and comments also load faster. Users can now “like” comments on photos, which wasn’t possible with the previous mobile app. Mick Johnson, mobile product manager at Face-

book, said programmers removed some lesser-used features, such as a way to view the app horizontally, to help speed it up. The mobile arena presents Facebook with its biggest challenge — and its biggest opportunity. At the end of June, Facebook had 543 million users who accessed it with a phone or tablet computer, up 67 per cent from 325 million a year earlier. But while Facebook ads are well established on its website, the company only recently started experimenting with mobile advertisements. That’s been a concern for investors, who’ve sent Facebook’s stock down by nearly half since the company’s initial public offering three months ago. The app is available for free from Apple’s App Store. the associated press

Parents helping kids buy homes: Economist Housing market. First-time buyers increasingly receiving assistance from their Boomer parents, CIBC expert notes A downturn in the housing market may not be as bad as feared because the important 25-34 age group will continue to buy houses — some with help from their well-off parents, says a senior economist at CIBC World Markets. The analysis takes aim at a theory that population growth won’t be strong enough to sustain demand, putting downward pressure on housing prices that have risen dramatically during a years-long period of low interest rates. “This demographically driven fear is much ado about nothing,” Benjamin Tal, deputy chief economist at CIBC World Markets, said Thursday. Demographic projections suggest there will be fewer Canadians under the age of 25 and between the ages of 45 and 54, but Tal notes those groups account for a small portion of home buyers. Tal said the group aged between 25 and 34 — the age group that makes up the vast majority of first-time buyers — will continue to grow. While that growing population of young people may have to postpone buying a house for a few years due to their student debt level, their parents can help them

Counterpoint

Capital Economics economist David Madani said while the 25-34 age group is helping drive sales they are more vulnerable to downturns. • Madani said average house prices in major cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa and Calgary could drop by 25 per cent in the next few years. • The average price for homes sold in July 2012 was $353,147, down two per cent from the same month last year. Excluding Greater Vancouver from the calculation, the average was up 1.1 per cent from a year ago.

out, Tal said from Toronto. “Many of those young people, they’re lucky, they have wealthy parents,” Tal said in an interview after his housing report was published. “This is actually the first generation that the parents are better off than the kids and those parents will write

a nice cheque,” he said. “The student debt level is not significant enough to really kill the housing market.” This group of young people also have the option of living with their parents while paying down their debt and saving for a down payment, he said. Tal said once they move out, the younger generation will be “extremely dynamic” in terms of self-employment and being employable, which will help them buy houses. “They will be employable, they will work and they will make money.” Tal also sees immigrants continuing to contribute to home ownership in Canada. With more of an emphasis on skills when they come to Canada, they will be more employable and have money to buy houses, he said. “In fact, after 10 years in Canada the propensity among immigrants to own a house is higher than among native-born Canadians,” Tal said in his report. He expects a correction, or lowering, in housing prices will not be seen as “being up in the sky” and should follow inflation. the canadian press

Windows 8 coming. Microsoft unveils first new logo in 25 years Microsoft’s corporate logo has a new look, setting the stage for a wave of products designed to cast the world’s largest software maker in a new light. The makeover unveiled Thursday marks the first time that Microsoft Corp. has revamped its logo since February 1987. The Internet was barely around then, and cellphones were considered a luxury. By revamping its logo, Microsoft is trying to signal that it has changed its thinking and its products to cater to people who are interacting with technology much differently than just a decade ago, let alone a quarter century. Microsoft believes a radical change to Windows will ensure that the company survives the technological upheaval. Windows 8, due to hit the market Oct. 26, displays software applications in a mosaic of tiles and has been engineered so it works on both touch-based tablets and traditional PCs. The company also is releasing its own Windows 8-powered tablet to compete against the iPad, ac-

Q&A with Parvianen

Meet the artist

Cooking up a lightstorm This stunning image captures a kitchen like no other, illuminated using a novel technique known as light topography. To achieve the sciencefiction effect, Finnish artist Janne Parvianen traces surfaces with LED lights and exposes the shots for 30 minutes. There is no Photoshop or image editing.

“Art is the key to your emotions.” Janne Parvianen, artist and teacher Despite the futuristic visuals, this old-fashioned message is how Parvianen describes his philosophy.

• What is most difficult about this technique? It is quite challenging to draw into three dimensional space, so it takes a lot of planning and training. It is usually through trial and error that I find the right positions and the figures for the final photo. • What emotions do the images inspire? I’m trying to put as much

soul in my photos as possible. My main interest has always been human emotions and trying to express them through art. I really like to use strong visual elements in my photos such as skeletons and people laying on the ground to create images that make you wonder what is really happening in them. A skeleton can be happy or sad, it doesn’t always have to be seen as a grim image.

Rush is the only thing premium in this film Fun ride. Joseph Gordon-Levitt-led thriller is full of style and action, but lacks any kind of substance

riveted by the action sequences in this film. Which definitely eclipsed the characters! I don’t know how I felt about Michael Shannon. He had a presence for sure, but he was also kind of cartoonish which stopped me from taking the movie seriously as a thriller.

Richard: Mark, Premium Rush is like a BMX race with a plotline. Bikes dart in and out of traffic, defy the laws of gravity and spin on one wheel, which is all cool, except that it overshadows the characters. Only Michael Shannon as the outof-control cop is memorable enough to rise above the bike stunts and skinned elbows.

RC: I don’t think it is meant to be taken seriously as a thriller. Any cop who would say, “I forgot to bring my bullets. I’ll meet you there,” to his cop buddies isn’t trying to be Detective Sergeant Joe Friday. He’s a wild, bug-eyed caricature of a man on the edge and the second most entertaining thing in the flick (next to the bikes). What did you think of Gordon-Levitt?

MB: Not an actors’ movie but he can clearly carry off a leading man role. What I really

liked about the movie was its style. The maps, time code, miniatures of Manhattan, and the fractured time narrative all kept me engaged with the limited storyline. Gordon-Levitt’s character is called Wiley, as in Wile. E. Coyote, and the movie does have a Roadrunner simplicity. I thought all the gimmicks and stylistic quirks opened it up nicely. RC: In the beginning I feared that the GPS maps that pop up from time to time might be too much style over substance, and in a way I was right. There isn’t much substance here, but it is a fun ride. MB: What I really didn’t buy was the pointless love triangle among the bike couriers, which was a waste of celluloid. But when you say “fun

Metro World News in Hollywood

While his main vocation is still music, Nick Cave admits he’s more than happy to write a screenplay whenever director John Hillcoat asks him to. The latest request from Hillcoat? Adapting Matt Bondurant’s book the Wettest County in the World, about Bondurant’s grandfather and great-uncles running a thriving moonshining operation during Prohibition. Cave also got to take a crack at the music for the film — as he’s often done for Hillcoat, most recently for 2009’s the Road. For Lawless, he found some unusual inspiration in the Velvet Underground.

How did you feel about changing the title from the Wettest County in the World to Lawless? Matt’s title — this is what I’m told — didn’t translate into other countries. I’ve heard that it sounded like a porn film, the Wettest County. But at the end of the day, I think probably the Wettest County in the World was just too lyrical to drag in the youth market. I

Where did the idea come from to include period versions of more modern songs, like with the Velvet Underground? I’m not really sure. Initially we were looking at songs of the time, obviously. But I just personally felt that had been done a lot and had been done really well, like O Brother Where Are Thou. I didn’t want to be chasing that kind of thing. So the time started to shift a little bit — maybe we take some from a little later. And then, f–- it, let’s take something from way over there and see what that’s like, and then kind of replay it in a sort of attempt to capture that kind of spirit of that time. But you know, something like White Light, White Heat already sounds very much fitted to the time anyway on some level — there’s a sort of boxiness to the way it’s recorded. I think that was the first one, and once we had that we went, “OK, that’s what we’re doing.”

Ever wonder what life could be like elsewhere? TV. Travel-hungry Canucks explore international house swaps in Live Here, Buy This Anyone who’s ever dreamt of pulling up stakes and moving halfway across the globe should be able to relate to the wannabe expats in the new HGTV series Live Here, Buy This. These travel-hungry Canucks have grand ideas of making their favourite vacation getaway their family’s permanent home-sweethome and why wouldn’t they? Most of the fantasy digs just happen to be in sunny, tropical paradises or culture-rich, centuries-old hamlets. Of course, actually pursuing such a dream is another matter entirely. And so this show takes a closer look at what a Canadian homeowner could get if they sold their home and bought a comparably priced abode elsewhere. “The show is really about presenting options to the homeowners,” says Dave Lapsley, one of three Canadian-based hosts who criss-cross the globe to profile far-flung properties. “Some (foreign) homes, simple homes, were similar to what the homeowners have here ... and then there were other ones (that) were like small castles in Italy or huts right on the beach. There was a treehouse home in Costa Rica. The array of homes was vast.” Each episode of Live Here, Buy This profiles a Canadian family musing on what life could be like elsewhere. They pick three dream locations and are presented with

two homes in each locale considered equal in value to their current place. Needless to say, where you could end up and the features you get vary widely depending on where you start and where you want to be. There seemed to be a lot of bang for your buck in rural Italy. Trading a modest $140,000 cottage in Barrie, Ont., can apparently get one family a slightly larger stone country home surrounded by olive groves.

But searching for a pad in Croatia proves surprisingly difficult for a Toronto family of four with a $575,000 budget. Their wish list gets them an 84 square metre (900 sq. ft.), two-bedroom apartment in the heart of the charming coastal town of Rovinj. No one actually moves at the end of each episode — this is merely a glimpse at the possibilities for adventurous globe-trotters, says series producer Danielle Kiraly. the canadian press

BBC America ‘really confident’ in new drama series Copper Television. Featuring Canadian actor Kyle Schmid, the period piece takes viewers to famed Five Points neighbourhood of New York Ian Gormely For Metro

Something they don’t tell Canadian actors who move down South is that despite living in Los Angeles, you’ll be spending a lot of time North of the border. Originally from Mississauga, Ont., Kyle Schmid has lived in the Golden State for the last eight years, but his work has landed him significant stints in Vancouver, Montreal — where he worked on the North American version of Being Human — and now Toronto, home base of production for Copper, which premiers this Sunday on Showcase. “It’s the show I’m most proud of,” he says. “I can share it with my family and friends and have them come on set and share the same energy I feel.” Created by Oz and St. Elsewhere writer Tom Fontana and executive produced by Diner director Barry Levinson, the series is the first foray into scripted drama for BBC America, where it airs in the States. There is no precedent at the

network, Schmid says. “But BBC is really confident with the show. You do get that feeling on set.” Set in the famed Five Points region of New York in the aftermath of the civil war, the program follows Irish police officer Kevin Corcoran whose wife and child have disappeared. “I love period pieces because of the history and the wardrobe and the characters and the change in the moral and ethic values,” he says. “It’s rare (in TV) that you get to do

something gritty and grimy.” Schmid originally auditioned to play Corcoran, but the part eventually went to Tom Weston-Jones. He was brought back to read for the part of Corcoran’s friend, Rob-

ert Morehouse, the son of a wealthy industrialist. After several readings he found himself rehearsing with other actors. “I’m in the room and I think I’m testing for this part. The BBC producers are in there,” Schmid recalls. He asked if there was anything they needed him to do. “They said, ‘No, no, no. You got the part. Nobody told you?’” Schmid describes Morehouse as a character in flux. “It was an era of opportun-

ity,” he says, “And Morehouse has money, power, women booze and drugs to exploit. With that comes a very layered character.” It’s a dream role for Schmid, who loves playing complex parts, but has yet to hit a point in his career where he has the luxury of picking and choosing parts. “The layers in the personality, the cracks in their walls — human qualities that make people and situations interesting are always the best characters to play.”

Riding Night Train to success Country music. Jason Aldean explains the reason he chose the title for his next major album release When Jason Aldean names an album, he looks for a title that fits his life at the moment.

He thinks Night Train, his choice for his much anticipated fifth album, paints the perfect picture. “It’s one of those things where we went from one bus pulling a trailer to all the sudden we’ve got six or seven buses and eight or nine trucks,” Aldean said. “We’re all rolling down the interstate together at night, and that’s what it looks like. It looks like a big freight train rolling

Prince in hot water at home over photo scandal In the wake of his nude Las Vegas photo scandal, Prince Harry has been summoned home, heading to Balmoral Castle in Scotland to get a talking-to from Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip as well as his dad, Prince Charles, according to Us Weekly. On September 12, Beanie Sigel is due to report to prison for a two-year stay for tax evasion. But although the Philly rapper pleaded guilty to failing to pay around $350,000 on unreported income, he’s not going quietly. In fact, Sigel has a perfectly good explanation for not filing between 2003-2005: “The years that they charged me for failure to file taxes is years that I was incarcerated,” he tells MTV of his stint for weapons and drug charges. “When you’re incarcerated in a federal facility, you’re not allowed to conduct any business at all.”

But Harry’s guards needn’t be too worried. “Of course questions will be asked, and matters raised, but no one’s job is on the line,” the source says. “As protection officers, their job is to intervene when his life is at risk, not to protect his image.”

It looks like Angelina Jolie is OK with her kids getting in on the act, as one of her children — 4-year-old daughter Vivienne — will get some screen time with mom. “Angelina Jolie’s daughter Vivienne will play a minor role as the child version of Princess Aurora opposite her mother in Maleficent,” a statement from Walt Disney Studios confirms. Elle Fanning will play the older version of the princess, better known as Sleeping Beauty.

Can I be frank? When it comes to comfort food, I love a good wiener. It doesn’t have to be all fancy pants with crazy toppings and snazzy dogs between my buns. I’m cool with a splash of mustard over something prepackaged. I’m in the minority. Hot dog aficionados are making

the common into an explosion of sophisticated flavours by turning dogs into delicacies. Funky toppings and themeoriented creations are turning the lowly supermarket sausage into the star of a gourmet revolution worthy of its own show on The Food Network. Question is: What do you

drink with that? With such a wide variety of interpretations reach for something light, clean and refreshing: beer. A good brew, especially a lager style, is a food affinity equalizer when things get spicy, sharp or crazy eclectic. After years of being an exclusively USA offering, Roll-

ing Rock Extra Pale Lager (473 ml, $2.35 - $3.29) has finally arrived in Canada. With good weight, a tight flavour profile and a linger bitterness, it’s a perfect companion to a dolled-up dog. PRICES REFLECT THE RANGE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. SOME PRODUCTS MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE IN ALL PROVINCES.

Creative Hot Dogs. Transform them with internationally inspired flavours A well-dressed dog — that is a hot dog accompanied by robust and inspired toppings — can transform this classic summer food into so much more. But just because they are overflowing and messy doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have a plan. Draw inspiration from other dishes when planning the toppings for a hot dog. Here are some suggestions. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Around the world in three hot dogs

The Greek Dog It’s inspired by feta cheese and spinach that are in spanakopita. Thaw 1 cup of frozen shredded spinach; squeeze it over sink to remove water. In skillet over medium-high, heat splash of olive oil. Sauté spinach, diced medium onion and 2 minced cloves of garlic. When onion tender, season with salt, pepper and dill seed. Grill 4 hot dogs and toast 4 hot dog buns over medium heat. Spoon spinach mix into each bun, then place a hot dog over it. Top with feta cheese and tzatziki.

The Pizza Dog The only way to make meat-wrapped meat better is to add melted mozzarella cheese. Using 2 slices of prosciutto per hot dog, wrap 4 hot dogs tightly in prosciutto. Grill the hot dogs over low heat, turning regularly, until the prosciutto is crisp

and lightly browned, about 8 minutes. Meanwhile, fill 4 hot dog buns with bocconcini (small balls of fresh mozzarella). Toast the buns on the grill (bun opening facing up) until the cheese is warm and starting to melt. Place a hot dog in each bun, then top with oilpacked chopped sun-dried tomatoes and chopped fresh basil.

The Taco Dog Soft and crunchy and spicy and creamy — exactly the way a taco should be. Spoon refried beans into 4 hot dog buns. Lightly crumble about 12 tortilla chips, then sprinkle some over the refried beans in each bun. Grill 4 hot dogs over low heat. Toast the

prepared buns (bun openings facing up) until the beans are heated. Place a hot dog in each bun, then top with sliced jalapeno peppers, tomato salsa, sliced black olives and shredded cheddar cheese.

“Everybody knows pico de gallo and tacos — well, there’s so much more.” Chef Chuck Hughes of new series Chuck’s Day Off on his experience with Mexican food during the two months he spent in the country filming

late clams, and head tacos (complete with eyes, brain, tongue and cheek). Hughes says despite recent headlines surrounding violent attacks on Canadians in Mexico, and a travel warning from Ottawa urging Canucks to exercise “extreme caution” in certain areas, he never felt unsafe during his stay last summer. “There’s probably 5,000 people that give a country of 120 million a bad rap,” he said. “I travelled for two months everywhere. I literally went everywhere, not once did I feel threatened, not once did I feel scared. “People were more scared of me, if anything. They were like, ‘Who is that tall white guy with all the tattoos?’” Hughes was particularly taken with Mexico City, where he stayed in the French-influenced Condesa district. “I feel like it’s a place where almost, I belong. I felt like I was home,” said Hughes, 35. “I’d love to raise my kids in Mexico City. I love the whole country, it was amazing, but Mexico City in particular was just really eye-opening to me. It’s probably cooler than New York, it’s probably cooler than Paris, it’s probably cooler than London. It’s

just a lot of creative young people.” The eight-part series is the first spinoff of Hughes’ Gemini-Award-nominated Chuck’s Day Off, which is broadcast in 30 countries. The co-owner and chef of Montreal hot-spots Garde Manger and Le Bremner chose Mexico for the spinoff because he knows how to speak a little bit of Spanish and wanted to explore its terrain and cuisine. “Everybody knows pico de gallo and tacos — well there’s so much more,” he said by phone. “Being from Quebec, my whole life I grew up on pork, corn, potatoes, and when I look at Mexico it’s the same kind of deal, only they have hot peppers and they use the corn in a different fashion. But basically our staples are the same.” Watching Mexican locals cook with old-school methods — using local, in-season ingredients and minimizing waste — in remote areas with few resources taught Hughes a few techniques. It also made him realize how lucky he is to have everything at his disposal at his kitchens in Canada. “I think that’s probably what I take back the most from my whole experience. Not necessarily any specific recipe but more of a philosophy and a way of treating the ingredients, looking at the ingredients and respecting the food,” said Hughes. “My life revolves around it and I’ve always respected food a lot, but in terms of professional cooking, we’re very, very lucky that we have water whenever we want and it’s used in every stage.” The Canadian Press

Habs’ skating guru gets Moosehead up to speed MATTHEW WUEST

matthew.wuest@metronews.ca

For years, scouts have picked apart Luca Ciampini’s skating ability. Soft hands, tremendous hockey mind, but a step slow, they’ve said. This summer, the Halifax Mooseheads left-winger took it to heart. Ciampini signed up for a month-long camp with Montreal Canadiens powerskating guru Paul Lawson in Arnprior, Ont., and began the process of addressing his biggest weakness. “I should have been doing it (power skating) my whole career,” said Ciampini, who plans to use the lessons learned from that camp to continue improving throughout the season. “I feel much better on the ice than before, more efficient. That was my No. 1 focus this year and that’s what I worked at to get to the next level.” Based on his promise as a potential sniper, the Mooseheads selected Ciampini second overall in the 2010 QMJHL draft and compared him to Luc Robitaille. After an injury-plagued rookie year in 2010-11, he produced 11 goals and 24 assists for 35 points as a sophomore last season. But he was wildly inconsistent.

He started the season getting top-line minutes and put up 15 points in 15 games, then tailed off with a few spurts here and there before settling into a fourthline spot in the playoffs. “When he had good games, he had great games,” said Mooseheads head coach Dominique Ducharme. “But quite often, after, we wouldn’t see him. He was inconsistent.” The six-foot, 196-pounder from Montreal doesn’t hide from that criticism. “I’m disappointed in myself for last season,” he said. “When I did do well at some points, I was inconsistent after, and that’s what I’m focused on improving, being the same player every night.” While the dynamic second-year duo of Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin will be the engine powering Halifax’s offence, they’ll need support, and ice time, particularly on the power play, is up for grabs. Ducharme said Ciampini, now 18, has what it takes to earn a bigger role. “That’s what we need from him, that’s why the team drafted him, because he had that potential,” said Ducharme, who coached Ciampini when he scored seven goals in six games for Quebec at the 2010 world under-17 challenge. “He’s really good from the tops of the circles in. When he’s around the puckin that area, good things happen.” Although Ciampini was passed over in June’s NHL draft, the Canadiens gave him a big vote of confidence earlier this month when they invited him to their

training camp for a look as a free agent. If there is no NHL lockout, Ciampini is hoping to show the Habs he’s worth keeping an eye on. And when he gets back to Halifax, he hopes he’s seen the last of the fourth line. “I’m going to work my hardest to get the big role I want,” he said. “I’m willing to do anything for the team, but I want that role offensively, for sure, and I’ll work as hard as I can to get it.”

USADA vows to strip Armstrong of 7 his Tour titles The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Thursday night it will strip Lance Armstrong of his unprecedented seven Tour de France titles after he declared he was finished fighting the drug charges that threaten his legacy as one of the greatest cyclists of all time. Still to be heard from was the sport’s governing body, the International Cycling Union, which had backed Armstrong’s legal challenge to USADA’s authority. Armstrong, who retired last year, declined to enter USADA’s arbitration process, saying he was weary of fighting accusations that have dogged him for years. The associated press

Prospects for NHL season on thin ice as lockout looms Contract talks. Hopes for resolution go unfulfilled as NHLPA and league still far apart on key issues. Another NHL lockout is beginning to feel like an inevitability. Unable to move beyond the philosophical stage of talks, the owners and players have watched another week slip by without progress. They sat down together for a quick session Thursday morning before reporting the same significant gap that has existed all along. The main issue that divides them is far from complex. “We believe we’re paying out more than we should be,” said commissioner Gary Bettman. “It’s as simple as that.” Of course, the NHL Players’ Association doesn’t quite see it that way. Executive director Don-

ald Fehr has acknowledged there’s room for some flexibility in that area — last week’s proposal included three years with a slightly lower share in revenues for the players — but he hasn’t come to the table in a conciliatory mood after taking over a union that capitulated during the last round of negotiations. “Everybody understands that employers would always like to pay less,” said Fehr. “That’s not a surprise to anybody — it’s disappointing sometimes — but it’s not a surprise.” The parties attempted to make some progress Wednesday by clearing the meeting room of everyone but the key figures: Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly along with Fehr and his brother Steve Fehr, the union’s No. 2 man. They soon discovered there was little common ground. Those same four men will reopen talks next Tuesday in New York during what promises to be a key negotiation session. the canadian press

Spiritual Thank-you a PRAYER to the Blessed Virgin (Never Known to fail.) “Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my Mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (say three times). Holy Mary, I place this prayer in your hands (say three times). Amen.” Say this Prayer for 3 consecutive days and then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. - HT

Horoscopes

Aries

March 21 - April 20 Be honest with yourself about your financial situation. The only way to resolve a problem is to identify exactly what that problem is, so stop pretending everything is fine and get to grips with reality. You’ll do OK.

Taurus

April 21 - May 21 Don’t look for the usual explanations today. Look for explanations that seem most outrageous, because those are the ones most likely to be true. You need to learn to think in more creative ways.

Gemini

May 22 - June 21 The Sun’s link to Neptune will confront you with situations, both at home and at work, that demand a more flexible response. Approach the same old problems in the same old ways — and you’ll get the same old results.

Cancer

June 22 - July 23 Don’t waste time trying to make sense of what is going on in the world because most likely it will make no sense. The good news is you are one of the lucky few who will benefit from the upheavals.

Leo

July 24 - Aug. 23 The more others tell you to follow the herd and do what everyone else is doing, the more you should do the opposite! The herd always ends up in the slaughterhouse, so break free and be the one who survives.

Virgo

Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 You have got to be active if you want to succeed. For best results today get out into the world and meet as many new people as you can. Luck is most likely to come when you are on the move.

Libra

Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 The rules of the game are for other people. Why? Because you are playing a different game entirely. Do as you please and come and go as you see fit. To put it bluntly: Who is going to stop you?

Scorpio

Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 Do something out of the ordinary today. If others are shocked by your behaviour, that’s both a bad sign and a good sign: bad in that it confirms you’ve become too predictable; good in that you know you must change.

Sagittarius

Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 Focus on your work today and believe that you can turn your dreams into realities. Whatever career path you have been following to date you must be more adventurous over the coming few weeks. What have you got to lose?

Capricorn

Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 Capricorn may be traditional by nature but you know when it is right to disrupt the status quo and that’s now. Chaos is not always a bad thing. Out of disruption will come a more positive way of life.
