Hughes announced he’d be closing the store’s old shop on Garry Street last August, and unveiled the new location in the basement of a 112-year-old building in the Exchange District in February. At the time, Hughes had hoped to be open in time to host the Jazz Festival performances and Fringe Festival shows this summer, but had to abandon both when the city shut down the venue due to permit issues. “We ended up with some unexpected paperwork challenges that we didn’t get sorted out by the time it was time to go,” explained Hughes. “It’s been a huge bummer.” Aqua Books is taking donations online, and are offering a number of unique incentives for donors including the opportunity to receive a phone call and rendition of Happy Birthday (sung in the style of Marilyn Monroe) from Hughes himself on their birthday. “We’re having some fun with this,” he said.

After more plot twists than a good novel, the last chapter of Aqua Books’ longer-than-expected move to its new location is being written — but owner Kelly Hughes needs Winnipeg’s help to finance the final edit. With mounting costs to meet city code — and the loss of revenue from not being able to host high-profile summer events — Aqua Books is looking to raise $10,000 over the next month to open the nearlyfinished store at 123 Princess St. “We’re just kind of trying to finish up and get open,” said Hughes, who is sporting a beard as a symbol of the waiting period. “I’m not going to shave (my beard) until we get our papers from the city to open.” The new Aqua Books will feature a stage for music and

A Manitoba prosecutor says a former police officer convicted of sexually assaulting women and girls should get five years in jail. Marty Minuk told the sentencing hearing for Richard Dow, 58, on Friday that the former Winnipeg officer had a position of trust, and that he violated that position. Dow pleaded guilty in May to 11 counts of sexual assault and one charge of simple assault involving a modelling business he ran while he was a police officer. The victims ranged in age from 17 to 23 and most were assaulted at photo shoots at Dow’s home. Dow’s lawyers have asked for a conditional sentence, but some of Dow’s victims have said that would be a slap in the face to them. The judge has reserved his decision until Sept. 13. Dow wept in court as he apologized to his victims. “I do offer my sincere apologies,” he read. “It was never my intention to harm anyone, however, I do take full responsibility for what has taken place.” Dow had originally pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting 20 females but many of those charges were stayed after he changed his plea. The case drew the attention earlier this year from Greg Gilhooly, one of the junior hockey players who accused former coach Graham James of sexual assault. Gilhooly said even though some of the women’s claims won’t be heard, they should still feel they had an impact on Dow pleading guilty. Dow’s lawyers argued their client is unlikely to reoffend, and said negative media coverage has humiliated him. In addition to a conditional sentence of two years less a day, they requested Dow serve his time in the community under a curfew, as well as perform 240 hours of community service. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Winnipeg senator’s wife charged in flight disturbance Domestic argument. Zimmer’s 23-year-old bride of one year to make second court appearance Monday after verbal fracas on airplane A woman charged with causing a disturbance on a flight to Saskatoon was allegedly arguing with her husband, who is a Canadian senator from Winnipeg. Maygan Sensenberger, 23, was in court in Saskatoon on Friday, after allegedly threatening passengers, swearing, and arguing with her husband, Rod Zimmer, 69. Court records show the disturbance happened on Air Canada Flight 8597, which originated in Halifax, stopped in Ottawa and then went on to Saskatoon. “It’s our understanding that throughout the flight, there was a verbal argument taking place of a domestic nature,” said Alyson Edwards, spokesperson with the Saskatoon Police Service. According to witnesses, Sensenberger created a large disturbance and it
only got worse as the plane neared Saskatoon, Edwards said. “The suspect in this case had stated to several people that she believed her husband was in medical distress,” said Edwards, adding that alcohol may have been a factor. Officers met the woman when the aircraft landed. Sensenberger is charged with endangering the safety of the aircraft and causing a disturbance. Court records show police believe she uttered threats against her husband and threatened to take down the plane. Zimmer, who is a Liberal and represents Manitoba in the Senate, was appointed to the Canadian upper chamber in 2005 by then-prime minister Paul Martin. No one was injured in the incident and police say the safety of the aircraft was not compromised. Sensenberger was visibly shaken and tearful in the prisoner’s box during her court appearance Friday. She will be remanded in custody until her second appearance on Monday. A Facebook page that was started in 2010 called, “Rod Zimmer & Maygan

The hotly anticipated Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., kicks off this week, though it’s now at the mercy of a would-be hurricane bearing down to join forces with the tempest already inflicted upon Mitt Romney and the Republican party by an anti-abortion Missouri congressman. The irony of a potential hurricane wreaking havoc on the convention hasn’t been lost on many pundits, especially since several high-profile conservatives, including Republican congresswoman Michele Bachmann, have blamed liberal policies over the years for similar “acts of God.” “By their own logic, Republicans and their conservative allies should be concerned that Isaac
is a form of divine retribution,” Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank wrote last week. Indeed, the recent remarks from U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin about women’s bodies shutting down and preventing pregnancy in cases of “legitimate rape” have already exposed dangerous fault lines in the party’s fragile coalition of disparate factions. “This is a classic bullhorn lock between the social conservatives of the party and the big business, economy-focused Republicans, the ones who are really worried about taxes and deregulation and other economic matters,” says Doug Brinkley, a historical author and history professor at Rice University in Houston. the associated press

Tropical storm expected to hit on 7th anniversary of Katrina On the move. Keys residents nonchalant about Isaac’s soaking, but Gulf Coast braced for potential hurricane Tropical storm Isaac barely stirred Florida Keys residents from their fabled nonchalance Sunday, while the Gulf Coast braced for the possibility that the sprawling storm will strengthen into a dangerous hurricane by the time it makes landfall there. Isaac was expected to cross the Keys by late afternoon, then turn northwest and strike as a Category 2 hurricane somewhere between the New Orleans area to the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday, the seventh anniversary of hurricane Katrina. The storm was predicted to pass west of Tampa, the site of the Republican National Convention, but it had already disrupted the schedule there because of the likelihood of heavy rain and strong winds. U.S. woman becomes pro-Palestinian symbol Civil lawsuit. Couple looking for justice after their daughter was crushed by an Israeli tank back in 2003 Almost a decade after their daughter was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer as she tried to block its path in a Gaza Strip conflict zone, Rachel Corrie’s parents are preparing for a judge’s ruling in their high-profile civil lawsuit against the military. They hope Tuesday’s court decision will conclude a case that’s turned their daughter into a rallying cry for pro-Palestinian activists, taken years of their life and drained their savings. “We are here with a great deal of anticipation for Tuesday,” said Corrie’s mother, Cindy, 64, a homemaker and musician from Olympia, Washington. “We are hoping for some accountability here for what happened to Rachel.” Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist, was 23 when she was killed in March 2003 while

she and other activists sought to block an Israeli military bulldozer they believed was about to demolish Palestinian homes. The driver has said he didn’t see Corrie, and the death was accidental. The Israeli army had been undertaking systematic house demolitions in the densely populated border area, trying to halt shooting and mortar attacks against soldiers and
Jewish settlers who used the route. While several foreign activists were killed or wounded in confrontations with the Israeli military during the last decade, Corrie’s case has taken on special meaning for Palestinian activists; she became a symbol of what they say is Israel’s harsh repression of non-violent protest to occupation. the associated press

Pussy Riot. Two members flee Russia to escape same fate as bandmates Two members of the punk band Pussy Riot have fled Russia to avoid prosecution for a protest against Vladimir Putin that sent three of their bandmates to prison, the group said Sunday. Murdoch sending message by running nude Harry photos? ‘Mooning the establishment’. Reports suggest scandal-plagued mogul may be pushing back on press freedom by challenging royals By letting his top-selling U.K. tabloid run photos of a naked Prince Harry cavorting in a Las Vegas hotel room, some say media mogul Rupert Murdoch Quoted
“He may be on the public payroll one way or another, but the public loves him.” News International head Rupert Murdoch on royal rogue Prince Harry
was warning Britain’s establishment that he could still shake things up. British officialdom has largely turned its back on Murdoch because of the phonehacking scandal that has badly tainted his media empire over the past year. So even though Murdoch’s The Sun newspaper framed its decision to publish the nude pictures as a defence of press freedom, some observers saw the move as a feisty message from the tycoon. “Not only was The Sun showing Harry’s bottom, Murdoch was mooning the Establishment,” said journalist Jane Merrick, whose article in The Independent on Sunday alleged that Murdoch personally ordered the paper to run the photos in a phone call with Tom Mockridge, the chief of his British newspaper unit, News International.
$1B. Apple verdict over Samsung may hurt competitors: Analysts It was the $1-billion question: What does Apple’s victory in an epic patent dispute over Samsung mean for the U.S. smartphone industry? Many analysts said the decision could spell danger for competitors who, like Samsung, use Google’s Android operating system to power their cellphones. A loss to the Android-based market would represent a big hit for Google, as well. “I am sure this is going to put a damper on Android’s
growth,” New York-based Isi Group analyst Brian Marshall said, “It hurts the franchise.” The Silicon Valley jury found that some of Samsung’s products illegally copied features and designs exclusive to Apple’s iPhone and iPad. Samsung has vowed to appeal the verdict all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that Apple’s patents were wrongly granted. A Sept. 20 hearing is scheduled. the associated press
Murdoch, once courted by lawmakers across the British political spectrum, has seen his clout wither after his company was exposed as having hacked phones to score scoops. The scandal has prompted a media-ethics inquiry that could propose sweeping changes to how Britain’s press is policed. If The Sun was cowed, it didn’t show it Friday, when it published the pictures of Harry along with a lengthy public-interest justification claiming that “the photos have potential implications for the Prince’s image representing Britain around the world.” In a Twitter message to a reader who congratulated him on The Sun’s decision, Murdoch said he “needed to demonstrate (that there is) no such thing as free press in U.K.”

Always whose team? There was a moment last week when I wondered if Blue Bomber executives Garth Buchko and Colin Fast Jim Bell might actually be evil winnipeg@metronews.ca geniuses. Could it be that, in order to draw attention away from the misery on the field, they were intentionally creating even more misery off of it? Of course that conspiracy theory was quickly debunked on Saturday, when the Bombers fired head coach Paul LaPolice, making him the scapegoat for the team’s sad 2-6 record, and even sadder relationship with fans. On the first point, LaPolice certainly does bear a lot of responsibility. In two-and-a-half seasons as coach, his overall record was only 16-28. And even though the team came close to beating the league-leading BC Lions the other night, the offence still struggled and players took way too many dumb penalties. In LaPolice’s defence though, he wasn’t in charge of assembling the players who make up the squad. That job belongs to GM Joe Mack, who says he’s perfectly fine with his work this year. That assessment might cause many football observers to question whether Mack has ever actually seen the Bombers in action. LaPolice also wasn’t responsible for new stadium construction, concessions, security, public relations, ticketing or scheduling. And even more than the poor on-field results, those are the things that have driven the Bomber faithful nuts this season. After all, it’s one thing to watch your football team lose a game. It’s something altogether worse when security treats you like a terrorist trying to sneak in an exploding cowbell on your way into the game. As a result, many fans have completely lost confidence in the team’s management. And that’s a problem that’s not going to be fixed by firing the coach or handing out a few free cups of water. No, a more meaningful solution would be to give the fans what they really want, which is a voice in how the team is run. How to do that? By selling shares to the public and truly becoming a “community owned” enterprise. It’s not a new idea. A share sale has been floated in the past as way to generate money — the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Green Bay Packers have raised millions through public share offerings — and a way to improve the team’s governance. While those points are still valid, moving to a shareholder model now would also be a shrewd bit of public relations. For team representatives like Buchko, Bell, Mack and the board of directors to put their own positions into the hands of the public would go a long way toward rebuilding trust. And the timing seems right for this change. With the team finally moving into its new stadium next year (right?), it’s going to need a solid fan base and new life around the boardroom table if it’s going to succeed. Opening up the ownership and management structure to the public would get this new era in Bomber history off to a good start and ensure that “Always Your Team” is more than just an empty marketing slogan.

True Blood recipes
Cookbook stakes out vampire eats True Blood fans can soon concoct their own blood-red beet bisque, crimson sweet tea and other Cajun delicacies inspired by the hit HBO vampire drama and compiled in a new cookbook. True Blood is filmed partly in Louisiana and is set in the fictional Louisiana town of Bon Temps. The state’s cuisine is often referenced in the series, where vampires and mortals mingle over bowls of okra gumbo, jambalaya, and red beans and rice. The cookbook, True Blood: Eats, Drinks, and Bites from Bon Temps, was compiled by Cajun chef Marcelle Bienvenu and is
being released in bookstores on Wednesday, shortly after Sunday’s broadcast of the show’s fifth-season finale. “I’m going to be honest with you, I had never seen the show before they asked me to do this cookbook,” said Bienvenu, a chef from the Cajun town of St. Martinville, La., who lived in New Orleans for several years and now teaches culinary arts at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La. “I sat down and watched it with my notebook, and I was amazed how much food was mentioned in the series,” she said. “It was fun making the recipes come to life. I think people are still mystified by south Louisiana food. There’s still such a mystique about the food and culture here.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Ilkeston barge was on its way to the London Canal Museum to mark its 100th birthday, after being restored to mint condition in the North of England. It was led there by Buddy, a 13-year-old Clydesdale horse, surely grateful this is no longer a common practice. Metro

The odd (celebrity) couple The engagement of Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger has shocked Sk8er Bois and wannabe rockstars alike. This is how they remind us of some other strange star couplings.
SCENE
MICHELLE CASTILLO Metro World News
Congratulations are in order for Canada’s most famous couple that no one knew existed, Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger. Lavigne annoyed millions (all the way to the platinum-tinged bank) with her “punk” records and pop singles. Kroeger has drawn much criticism for his lead singer role in Nickleback — so much so that even he’s joined in and jokingly lashed back at the hatred through tongue-in-cheek videos on Funny or Die and quips on Twitter. The two surprised fans and enemies alike by getting engaged after six months of discretely dating while they were co-writing a song for Lavigne’s fifth studio album. But they’re not the most shocking couple out there. Here’s a couple more pairings that had us stunned.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez
Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn
He was raised in Boston. She grew up the Bronx. Somehow, these two managed to get together for what we are quite sure was a meaningful, notlong-lasting relationship. And, um, Gigli.
Though legally he wasn’t her stepfather, Allen’s relationship with Previn’s adoptive mother, Mia Farrow, made the whole situation icky. It must be true love though: They’ve been together since 1992 and have two adopted daughters.
Lisa Marie Presley and Nicolas Cage Gossip mills say that one of the main reasons Cage was attracted to the Presley daughter was because of his obsession with the King, which we’re assuming would make for really awkward first date conversation.
Tom Cruise and Cher Believe it or not, these two were together for a few months in the 1980s. Then again, it was the 1980s. A lot of things that shock us today weren’t so surprising back then.

Unlike the rest of us, Perry apparently thought Mayer had grown up since his days of bragging about his A-list sex life in Playboy. “Katy fell hook, line and sinker for John, so when he broke it off she was ultimately surprised and incredibly embarrassed,” a source tells the site. “She’s ashamed that she got played. Parents’ back to school 101: Letting them go
LIFE
Parenting. Don’t let your nerves take over as your little ones board that school bus MEREDITH ENGEL
Metro World News in New York City
Pop quiz: Who’s more nervous about starting school this year, you or your child? If it’s you, “it’s a very normal response to have,” says Matthew Stevenson, a child and family therapist in Philadelphia. We asked him how parents can send their little ones off to school without letting their nerves take over. Why does this anxiety happen? It usually happens the first couple of times that a parent leaves their child alone, even for a couple hours. It’s a natural thing to be worried about the person that you brought into the world, that you’re responsible for, if you’re not there when you are there typically. Particularly the stay-at-home parents, for them to be with this person 24/7 for five years and then to have them go off alone, that can cause a lot of stress. And it’s a very normal thing to experience that stress. They’re worried about their kid because they know they can keep their child safe. They’ve been doing it for five years, and now they’re giving that responsibility to somebody else. It’s hard to let go of that control.
Acknowledging that you’re nervous about your child heading off to school is the first step to feeling better. ISTOCK
Where it can potentially become a problem is if that stress is being picked up by the child. How can parents feel better? Acknowledge it. The parent needs to realize that this is something they’re concerned about — that’s step one. Once they’re able to acknowledge that, understand that it’s a pretty normal anxiety to have. Step two is that it’s important for parents to realize that they need to let their child go. That’s part of the growth of their
child, to have that independence and be able to function and do well without having the parent present all the time. Part of being a good parent is having your child thrive when you’re not around. Then once you are able to let your child go to school, it’s important to keep yourself occupied during those times. Have activities, do errands that are a lot easier to do without a child. Join classes, go to the gym — anything that would distract you so before you know it, it’s time to pick up your little one.
When is this a problem that needs some extra help? If the parent is going to school to watch their kid at recess, that would be not healthy. I think calling the school multiple times during the day to make sure that their child is OK, that would not be healthy. Showing that you’re so upset, and your child picks up on that and then doesn’t want to go to school, that’s where it becomes a big issue. If you’re able to hide your anxiety from your child, and they still enjoy going to school, it’s not as much of a
problem. But if it’s affecting the entire family, then at that point it’s probably good to seek help from a therapist. On the web metronews.ca •

CFL. Defensive coordinator has ‘mixed emotions’ on firing of head coach LaPolice
Mobile sports
Paul LaPolice has paid the price for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ losing season. The Bombers fired their head coach on Saturday and replaced him with defensive co-ordinator Tim Burke, who’ll have the rest of the season to improve the 2-6 squad before his performance is evaluated. Joe Mack, the team’s vicepresident and general manager, said the decision to fire LaPolice was “building over the season” and wasn’t a knee-jerk reaction to Winnipeg’s 20-17 loss Friday to the 6-2 CFL-leading B.C. Lions. “Even though we did play a strong game (Friday), the
overall feeling was is that we were not necessarily going in the right direction and that this was the appropriate time to make a change,” Mack said at a press conference Saturday afternoon. He cited a lack of improvement in the offence, undisciplined play and a losing record since a year ago as factors in his decision. Burke has been in the CFL since 2005 with Calgary, Montreal and Winnipeg, which he joined last season. Highly regarded for putting together top defences, he was a finalist this year to become Hamilton’s head coach, but the job went to George Cortez. “I have mixed emotions on this day,” Burke, 58, said. “A lot of you know that I’ve really wanted to become a head coach and I really relish this opportunity to prove that I can be a head coach.
“I’m very sad also because Paul is my friend and he was very gracious after Joe told him.” LaPolice, 42, was in his third season in Winnipeg and leaves the team with a 16-28 record. He wasn’t immediately available for comment Saturday but later took to Twitter to address his firing. “Thks to everyone for the show of support. Although I 110% disagree with the decision today, I have loved every minute of being HC of Bombers,” he tweeted. LaPolice also dismissed suggestions the Bombers players had lost faith in him as their head coach. “Last nights effort did not reflect a team that didn’t believe in the coach and players that have reached out to me disagree with that view,” he tweeted. “Thanks to everyone and although not perfect I am proud
