Elderly man dies, woman in critical condition after blaze SHANE GIBSON

shane.gibson@metronews.ca

An elderly man is dead and a woman is fighting for her life in hospital after fire ripped through a Fort Rouge area home early Thursday. Patrolling police officers noticed the “strong smell of acrid smoke” coming from the home at 547 Hethrington Ave. around 2:50 a.m. Although the officers ran into the burning home, intense heat and smoke forced them out. When firefighters arrived they found an elderly man and a 58-year-old woman inside the home, and both were taken to hospital in critical condition. The man has since died from his injuries. The person who died has not been identified by police. However, neighbour Nettie Wagner identified the couple who live there as Bert and Jo-

anne Parry, and said Bert was over 80 years old. Another neighbour told Metro the couple’s adult daughter also lives at the home. While early reports said the woman in critical condition was the man’s wife — who neighbours said suffers from Alzheimer’s — police could not confirm the relationship between the injured woman and the deceased man. Wagner, who has lived next door to the couple since 1963, said Bert had grown up in the home and knew all about the neighbourhood’s history. She said Joanne was “very good at painting … she was very artistic” and Bert was a talented woodworker. “He was a very helpful person, if you needed help, you know, you could just go to him,” said Wagner, who said he would drive her to appointments. “He was always willing to help. “If you needed something fixed that he could fix he would fix it for you.” Members of the Arson Strike Force are investigating the blaze, and a cause has yet to be determined. Warranties to be made mandatory for new homes, condos in Manitoba

Healthy Living Minister Jim Rondeau announces on Thursday that new homes and condos will need to have warranty protection. CHRISD.CA

The province introduced a plan Thursday that would make warranties for all new homes and condominiums built in Manitoba mandatory. Healthy Living, Seniors and Consumer Affairs Minister Jim Rondeau touted the idea as a way of protecting the “most important investments” made by most consumers. “Our plan will help protect Manitobans buying a new home with better, extended warranty protection against construction-related defects,” said Rondeau in a release.

Under the new rules, new home builders will be required to secure a warranty on new houses and condo properties with a third-party warranty provider. The minimum warranty coverage would be higher than what is currently offered under existing voluntary home warranty programs. The news release said the Manitoba Home Builder’s Association supports the plan. “This move will promote professional building methods and put everyone on equal

footing,” said Mike Moore, president of the association. “It’s a positive step for builders and new home buyers alike.” The new protections will cover any defects in labour, materials and design in homes and condos for one year, major systems like electrical and plumbing and violations in code that result in health or safety risks or material damage for two years, and defects in the building envelope — including water penetration for two-years — and structural defects for seven years. Inquiry. Social worker says she ‘probably could’ have done more to help girl A Manitoba social worker says she “probably could” have done more to check on a girl whose death is now the subject of a public inquiry, but the worker also says she feared that being too aggressive would backfire. Laura Forrest took on Phoenix Sinclair’s case in February 2003, when the toddler was brought to hospital with an infection from an object that had been lodged in her nose for three months. The hospital reported the matter as a probable case of neglect. Forrest told the inquiry on Thursday that she went to the girl’s home and was met by her father, Steve Sinclair, who said Phoenix was being cared for by a family friend. Forrest said she went back to the home a few times over the next four months, always during the daytime, but there was no answer at the door.

Under cross-examination, Forrest said she could have taken other steps such as phoning other relatives, but didn’t. “I probably could have done a few other things. I didn’t at that time,” Forrest said. “I also don’t know what else was going on for me with other families.” “Did you ever think of going there in the evening?” asked Jeff Gindin, the lawyer for Steve Sinclair. “I did not, no,” Forrest replied. “I’d left cards in the door. He knew I was trying to contact him.” Phoenix was seized by childwelfare workers several times and returned to her mother, Samantha Kematch, a final time in 2004 — the year before she was beaten to death by Kematch and her boyfriend. the canadian press

Dr. Thomas Mammen, an interventional neuroradiologist at the Health Science Centre, holds the simple device he invented called a MiLO, which keeps IV lines separate and organized. Shane Gibson/Metro

Brain surgeon’s invention ‘simple’ Keeping things organized. Winnipeg doctor’s device gets rid of tangled IV lines shane Gibson

shane.gibson@metronews.ca

A medical device invented in Winnipeg that could make the use of IVs much easier for medical professionals around the world is so simple it took a brain surgeon to come up with the idea. The Multiple IV Line Organizer, or MiLO for short,

is a flexible two-inch piece of plastic with four grooves that each fit one IV, keeping multiple lines separate and organized when patients are moved. “It’s a very simple design, I don’t know why nobody has come up with it,” explained Dr. Thomas Mammen, an interventional neuroradiologist working at the Health Science Centre who came up with the idea after tangled IV lines gave him a headache. “I do studies of the brain vessels … and when (patients) come they often have a lot of IV lines — sometimes ten or more. “It’s difficult to have 10

lines that are freely floating, they get caught, intertwined and tangled … it can take a good five to ten minutes to separate.” His solution was so simple that Mammen didn’t consider marketing the idea after he made his first MiLO about a year and a half ago, but began using the device with his own patients. Then his colleagues began asking him where they could get MiLOs too. “I was just doing something to make life easier … I didn’t have any intention of doing anything like this,” explained Mammen. “The idea to produce it came from my colleagues

PUBLIC

EMPLOYEES: Working together for a better Winnipeg

and nurses who work with me.” MiLO has since been patented in the United States, Canada and Europe and went to market this fall after being tested by colleagues at HSC. Mammen has no intention of quitting his day job — he’s one of just three interventional neuroradiologists working in the province — but hopes his device will improve patient care by making the job of doctors and nurses easier. “It’s very simple, but it can ease (caregiver) frustration, so they are less stressed and can do a better job,” he said.

Singer-songwriter Xavier Rudd’s album is for the birds Weekend show. Aussie artist to play the Burton Cummings Theatre on Saturday Jared Story

winnipeg@metronews.ca

For Australian singer-songwriter and one-man band Xavier Rudd, the bird is the word. His seventh studio album, Spirit Bird, is inspired by a strange encounter with a red-tailed black cockatoo during a trip to the Kimberley region of Western Australia. “They’re usually pretty flighty birds but these ones were right there and this one big old woman bird locked eyes with me and just stared through me for what seemed like a very long time,” Rudd, who was in Kimberley protesting a proposed gas refinery in James Price Point, said. “She started to creak and groan and I had this profound experience with visions of people and places and memories. They didn’t even seem like my memories, it was all

quite bizarre. That day I started the song Spirit Bird in the sand on the beach and the lyrics just poured out of me.” Rudd didn’t finish the title track until two years later, while recording at a lakeside studio just north of Toronto. Oddly, the next day Rudd awoke to news that the Australian government had taken James Price Point and that police had moved in and removed the protestors and several of the area’s residents. A month later, Rudd returned to Kimberley and was again greeted by red-tailed black cockatoos. One dropped the feather that appears on the front cover of Spirit Bird. The album also features samples of more than 25 Australian bird sounds, Rudd mixing the calls with his didgeridoo, drums, guitars and harmonica.

Toronto’s The Wooden Sky is fronted by Gavin Gardiner, far right, who grew up in Morden, Man. Justin Broadbent/Handout

Toronto alt-country band The Wooden Sky practised empathy on their third studio album, Every Child a Daughter, Every Moon a Sun. “You know when you’re driving and you see another person driving past, you see them for a split second and I was trying to imagine what it would be like to be in their seat,” said Gavin Gardiner, The Wooden Sky’s vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter. “They have a whole life

they’re moving towards. Perhaps they’re late for something or they just came from a birthday or maybe their mother just died. It’s this whole idea of these independent universes that exist simultaneously. It’s not a concept record, but it is a snapshot of a place I’m in right now, trying to see life through other people’s lives and also give people a different perspective to see their life through.” To record Every Child a

Daughter, Every Moon a Sun, The Wooden Sky once again sought the perspective of producer and former Arcade Fire member Howard Bilerman, just as they did on 2009’s If I Don’t Come Home You’ll Know I’m Gone. Speaking of standpoints, Gardiner and Co. channel Ritchie Valens on the ’50s style number Take Me Out. “As a kid I was obsessed with the movie La Bamba, it’s the whole reason I got my first

Plans in place to welcome IKEA Winnipeg shoppers One of the most anticipated store openings in Winnipeg retail history calls for almost-military planning and organization when it comes to security, traffic and an expected long lineup of eager customers waiting to get into the store come Wednesday morning. But there’s nothing to worry about, said Maegan Sheskey, spokesperson for IKEA Winnipeg. “We have the best plans in place, and we have this

entire time” to get ready, Sheskey said on Thursday during Metro’s sneak peek at the store. “The safety and the security of our co-workers and our customers in this building is our No. 1 priority,” Sheskey said. “We have really good traffic plans in place for the opening week, to make sure that we’re doing everything we can to get customers, get them in a parking stall and get them in the store.”

Those who are superkeen can start lining up outside IKEA at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, and Sheskey said there will be heaters to keep them warm, and porta-potties. Also, the first 1,000 people in line receive a $75 gift card and an Allen key, of which there will be five golden keys. Those five will vie for a $5,000 gift card, with the rest getting a $1,000 card. Bernice Pontanilla/Metro

’Peggers say a big ‘hej’ to IKEA Maegan Sheskey, who relocated from Edmonton to take part in this muchanticipated store opening for the Swedish chain, said wherever she goes, includ-

ing grocery stores, if a person sees her IKEA name tag, they stop her to chat. “People see the IKEA logo and they get so excited,” she said. “For us, as a company, it’s extremely humbling … I don’t think anybody could have imagined this level of excitement.” Bernice Pontanilla/Metro

Did you know that IKEA is an acronym? • It stands for the name

of the company founder, Ingvar Kamprad, and where he’s from: Elmtaryd, the farm on which he was raised, near the village of Agunnaryd in the south of Sweden.

When someone told me that IKEA had an app that lets you make a shopping list as you browse, I downloaded it immediately. Unfortunately, their description wasn’t entirely accurate, but it was close enough. The app, which you will find if you search the iTunes app store for IKEA Canada, is basically a beefed-up catalogue, the same catalogue that landed on every Winnipegger’s doorstep over the past few months. Like an ebook, you swipe through the pages to peruse the catalogue. What’s neat about it though, is the “show products” tab in the app. The one thing I’ve never liked about catalogues is when they show you a room filled with their products, but name only one or two of the products in the picture.

Pre-emptive smear. Tories target Trudeau as poll suggests growing favour Conservatives have launched their first concerted attack on Justin Trudeau — and a new poll may explain why. The Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey suggests the Liberal leadership frontrunner’s popularity is not the fleeting celebrity phenomenon that skeptics had assumed. It’s actually increasing and has the potential to siphon off votes from all parties, including the Tories. Forty-two per cent of respondents said they’d be certain or likely to vote Liberal in the next election if Trudeau was at the helm — enough to form a comfortable Liberal majority government. The poll was released Thursday, just as the Conservatives pounced on a two-year-old television interview to accuse Trudeau of being anti-Alberta. In the interview with the Tele-Quebec program Les francs-tireurs, Trudeau said: “Canada isn’t doing well right now because it’s Albertans who control our community and socio-democratic agenda. It doesn’t work.” Trudeau’s campaign swiftly issued a statement accusing

the Tories of using “out-ofcontext statements made years ago in a long interview” to launch a desperate “smear campaign” aimed at reviving the faltering Conservative byelection campaign in Calgary Centre. The resurrected Trudeau quotes piled on a gaffe a day earlier by Ottawa Liberal MP David McGuinty. He resigned his shadow cabinet post as natural resources critic after saying Alberta Tory MPs are “shills” for the oil industry and should go home.

Tom Mulcair says Canada’s municipalities are heading for an “infrastructure cliff” unless the federal government commits to long-term, stable funding to repair crumbling roads, and water and sewer systems. And the NDP leader says that commitment must be made in the 2013 budget, since the current Building Canada Fund is set to expire in 2014. the canadian press

Harper opts out of provincial gathering Halifax. Prime minister’s absence threatens to overshadow premiers’ meeting on economy Canada’s premiers are arriving in Halifax in the hopes of striking a common economic plan at a time of tepid growth and mounting debt. But Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s absence from the meeting, which begins Friday, threatens to derail that goal, a couple of them say. “It’s difficult for us to know how we can best blend our own planning in with the funding of the federal government if we don’t know what their plans are,” said Nova Scotia Premier

Stephen Harper the canadian press file

Darrell Dexter, who is hosting the meeting. The idea for such a gathering came up during the last premiers’ meeting in July, when they agreed to discuss how they could protect their provinces from a global economy in flux. That was before revised figures came out showing a higher federal deficit and growing concerns

over the possibility of the U.S. economy going over its so-called fiscal cliff at the end of next month. The premiers invited Harper, but he declined. His office has said he has met regularly with the provincial leaders and the economy remains his prime concern, but that response hasn’t sat well with a few of them. “I think we’re all disappointed that we couldn’t get an opportunity to meet with the prime minister and to build a strong plan for economic growth together,” Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said earlier this week. “We’ll see what we can do by way of a concerted effort.” the canadian press

A worker cuts a shark fin on June 12 at a fish market in Dubai. The global trade in shark fins totals hundreds of millions of dollars a year, and tens of millions of sharks around the world may be caught every year for their fins. The European Parliament voted to ban the practice of shark finning, Thursday. Kamran Jebreili/the associated press

EU Parliament votes to ban shark finning Speciality. Practice stems from the high price the body parts fetch in China for shark-fin soup The European Union took a major step to protect sharks on Thursday, banning the brutal practice of hacking off their fins before throwing them back into the sea to die. The European Parliament voted by an overwhelming 566-47 margin to force all boats in EU waters and EUregistered vessels around the world to land sharks with

their fins attached and prove the animal had not been thrown back finless. The practice of shark finning stems from the high price the body parts fetch in China for shark-fin soup, a specialty at high-class banquets, and the low value of the rest of the body. The consumption of fins has risen as China’s living standards have increased. Fins can sell for as much as $700 US a pound. The European Union has said that some 75 million sharks are killed for their fins only. Since the EU is the biggest exporter, the move should have a sizable impact on shark populations. Beker injects attitude into plus-size clothing Retail. Fashion guru’s capsule collection for Addition Elle aims to fill gap in market With a sister and childhood friend who are both plussized, the lament about a lack of stylish options for full-figured women was one Jeanne Beker has heard plenty. “My whole life growing up I heard those kinds of complaints and the kinds of frustration that they were going through,” the longtime fashion and media maven and Metro columnist said in an interview. “Everything just seemed so ‘missy,’ or people were complaining about the kinds of prints that they were being offered, and they weren’t being offered a lot of that same attitude that we saw in the regular-sized lines. Now, it’s all coming together.” Beker will be putting her own sartorial stamp on fashB:10”ions for fuller-figured women T:10”through a partnership with Addition Elle.

“There really has been a void in the (plus-size) market I think for clothes that just were sophisticated in a sense, but with a hip kind of maybe edge to them; like a kind of attitude we weren’t seeing.” Jeanne Beker The style columnist and Fashion Television Channel host teamed up with the retailer on a 19-piece plus-size capsule collection. The collaboration will bring extended sizing of the Edit by Jeanne Beker line to Addition Elle stores starting next April. Beker said about two seasons into the creation of Edit, they made a foray into the plus-size market. While some of the pieces “would just fly off the rack,” she said others weren’t resonating to the same degree. “We started thinking: ‘You know, what are we doing wrong?’ because the regularsized line is doing so well.... RICHARD CROUSE AND MARK BRESLIN

HANDOUT

Films to occupy in the zombie off-season Bye, bye brain eaters. With The Walking Dead season drawing to an end, the Reel Guys offer some undead suggestions Richard: Mark, several episodes from this season’s Walking Dead were among the best television of the year. It owes a HUGE debt to George A. Romero’s classic Night of the Living Dead, but I still watch even though it gives me weird dreams every Sunday night. To calm my jangled nerves, I’ve been checking out zombie comedies like Shaun of the Dead and Cemetery Man. Everyone knows Shaun, but Cemetery’s weird story is worth a look. Are you a zombie fan?

Mark: Depends on the zombie, Richard. I didn’t get a chance to catch up with the Walking Dead series because I was too busy watching the brainwashed terrorist zombies in Homeland. A different kind of zombie, to be sure, but zombies all the same. I think the faster the zombies move, the more I like the movie. Those slow-walking, arms-outstretched flesh eaters aren’t that different than most of the clubbers I see at closing time on Saturday nights. I’ve never seen Cemetery Man, but it looks interesting. Thanks for the tip. RC: The whole slow-moving zombies versus fast-moving zombies debate is an argument for the ages. I guess I’m a traditionalist. I like the Romero zombie, the bumbling undead who mindlessly and relentlessly keep hunting for braaains.

Dawn of the Dead, I Walked with a Zombie and Lucio Fulci’s Zombi are masterpieces of the slow shuffle. You might like the remake of Dawn of the Dead. Man those zombies can run! MB: I did like that one, along with Zombieland, Dead Snow (Nazi zombies, what’s not to like?), and the zombie comedy (zomcom?) Fido starring Billy Connelly as a kindly zombie. But the big question in all the zombie films is: How do you get away from a zombie? Well, it seems that the meat that tastes closest to human flesh is pig! So I say, when confronted with a pack of zombies, let loose the porkers! RC: Good advice. I’d add another zombie apocalypse tip I picked up from the movie Zombieland. You are at your most vulnerable while sitting

on the toilet, so hold it as long as you can. Also, having a machine gun where your leg used to be, à la Rose McGowan in Planet Terror, can be very useful. MB: I’m old school, Richard. I prefer having both legs to utilize the strategy of actually running away. And remember, when being chased by a zombie, you don’t have to be the fastest runner, just faster than the guy behind you.

Twilight’s little piece of forever to get more time on the big screen? Spinoff speculation. The last film in the series has hit theatres, and the Twilight team won’t dismiss rumours of another installment

Twilight’s mysterious Volturi provide plenty of spinoff potential.

handout

The thing about vampires is they live forever. And so now that the blockbuster Twilight saga has unleashed its sprawling finale, it’s only fitting that speculation runs rampant about a spinoff that could keep the franchise undead for a little while longer. Vampire-playing cast mates Daniel Cudmore and Charlie Bewley sure don’t mind stirring up rumours with their own suggestions of life after Breaking Dawn — Part 2, and not surprisingly it involves more adventures for their mysterious side characters. “You do wonder what will

happen once this is all said and done,” says Bewley, who plays Demetri, a member of an ancient ruling clan known as the Volturi. “(There are) lots of willing people ready to start new subsidiaries of this saga, so that’s just down to Lionsgate/Summit, (author) Stephenie Meyer and whoever’s in the reckoning.” Last weekend’s blockbuster debut came with whispers of possible ways for the supernatural series to live on. Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg stirred the pot last month with a Facebook poll asking which vampire clan should get a spinoff and stars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner each said they’d be open to a followup. Meyer, meanwhile, has reportedly said she’s got plenty of story ideas but dismissed notions anything solid is in the works. There’s no question that an off-shoot could flesh out a supernatural world that ex-

Finally, critical praise

Twilight actor Charlie Bewley says it’s gratifying to see the fifth Twilight film being embraced by solid critical reviews after earlier installments took widespread beatings. “It’s not made for everyone,” he says. “(But) it was made for the people who made the book series so cult and popular in the first place.”

There’s more than One Direction for a documentary filmmaker to take Morgan Spurlock. Oscar-nominated filmmaker sparks discussion with his new boy-band based project Ned Ehrbar

Metro World News in Hollywood

Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) announced last week that he would be directing a 3D concert film about the hit British boy band One Direction for theatrical release next September, with American Idol and the X Factor mastermind Simon Cowell producing. “This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band,” Spurlock says in a statement. “To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world

Morgan Spurlock has gone from documenting fast food to fodder for boy band fans. getty images

Morgan Spurlock is embarking on a 3D film project with One Direction. getty images

will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of.” What’s perhaps most surprising about the news, though, is how often the pro-

ject has been referred to as a documentary in the press. While the trend has been to incorporate more and more backstage and off-stage footage into concert films — as

with last year’s Justin Bieber film Never Say Never and Katy Perry’s Part of Me earlier this year — do they really qualify as documentaries? Or does the label have to do more

with Spurlock’s involvement. We decided to check in with some experts. “We have seen over time that the perceived definition of documentary film has radically changed. The one constant is that these films have continued to follow factual information about the subject they are documenting and that is important,” Jus-

tin Krumb, director of the doc Minds in the Water, tells Metro. “So in the case of Spurlock’s new project, I believe this a true documentary, in that sense of the word, but one that falls into a new subcategory that relates to the phenomenon of reality TV/ celebrity power. What’s missing that I’d love to see is how these films bring about social change. How they alter our feeling to go out and change the world in a positive way or call attention to an issue that needs to be addressed.” Some of Spurlock’s colleagues are willing to wait and see how he fares with his new singing and dancing subjects before passing judgment. “I know a bit about the project and from what I understand I’m not sure it’s a concert film at all,” says Lucy Walker, an Oscar nominee herself for Waste Land and the Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom. “Why not let him explore all aspects of filmmaking and give him the benefit of the doubt until we’ve seen it?”

Movie makeup transformations Critics love it when hot actors get by on more than their looks. Mike Dojc

scene@metronews.ca

The movie poster for Only God Forgives is an enigma. It’s a headshot of Ryan Gosling, yet one that no starstruck teen would ever swoon over. His mug appears beaten to a pulp and his left eye is as swollen shut as it would be after a round in the Octagon with Georges St-Pierre. Can you smell an Oscar? Critics can’t get enough of attractive thespians getting beaten with the ugly stick for art’s sake. It certainly worked for these actors who garnered big-time kudos for keeping their good looks on the down low.

Rooney Mara Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Pre GWTDT Rooney was a fresh-face with an alluring yet ubiquitous girl-nextdoor vibe. Dodging Freddie Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake and tearing Mark Zuckerberg a new one in The Social Network as the future Facebook billionaire’s soon to be ex-girlfriend, she didn’t exactly spellbind. Then Mara chopped off her locks and transformed from a generic Hollywood hottie into an androgynous goth hacker with bleached eyebrows and piercings aplenty — a brunette version of Die Antwoord’s Yolandi Visser. Suddenly we couldn’t take our eyes off of her. Cashing in: Nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe and MTV Movie Award.

Felicity Huffman Transamerica

Charlize Theron Monster

Huffman had already scored an Emmy for playing Lynette Sciavo on Desperate Housewives, but to ensure she wasn’t forever typecast as a harried suburban soccer mom, in Transamerica she reshuffled her image. To conceal her gender as a woman playing a preoperative male-tofemale transsexual, Huffman dons a dumpy wig, unflattering lavender pantsuits and poorly applied make up. Plus, she exposed the most talked about prosthetic penis in film since Mark Wahlberg’s Boogie Nights reveal.

The sultry South African beauty was virtually unrecognizable as a butch John-murdering prostitute. She packed on thirty pounds, hid her dazzling green eyes behind dark colored contact lenses and wore yellowed false teeth for the role. To complete the cruel transition from glamazon to frumpy real-life serial killer, Theron swapped her A-list complexion in for a pasty mottled mess and shaved her eyebrows. She also let stylists make her normally lustrous hair look in desperate need of a salon.

Cashing in: Nominated for an Oscar, and won a Golden Globe and Independent Spirit award.

Cashing in: “One of the greatest performances in the history of cinema,” raved Roger Ebert, and he wasn’t alone. Theron won a mantle’s worth of movie star hardware for Monster, including an Oscar and a Golden Globe.

Brad Pitt The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Cameron Diaz Being John Malkovich

How do you turn a perennial topper of world’s sexiest man lists into a wrinkly octogenarian? It took literally two years just to get the eye system component of the CGI wizardry that turned Pitt into a prune faced nursing home denizen working properly and nine months dedicated to writing the software articulation program for the computer generated tongue. For the first hour of the movie, the digitally rendered composite of an aged Pitt was seamlessly plopped onto various body actors. While many reviewers bemoaned the three-hour run time of this majestic yarn as yawningly long, Pitt’s performance as the age reversing titular character drew almost universal admiration.

Diaz’s typically exquisite tresses have been a focal point in previous films. In There’s Something about Mary her hairstyle is front and centre in the infamous scene where Diaz mistakes a glob of Ben Stiller’s nerve nullifying pre-date deposit for hair gel. As John Cusack’s homely animal hoarding wife in this surreal Spike Jonze black comedy, we once again can’t help but stare at her bob — a straggly, frizzy mess of a do. We wonder if the same smiling, leggy beauty we all know and love is really under that nest and dowdy clothes.

Cashing in: Nominated for an Oscar, Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe, and Teen Choice award.

On the big or small screen, Tupper is Playing for Keeps New movie. Actor becomes romantically entangled with Jessica Biel and Gerard Butler in the upcoming feature film Stephen Eramo

Metro World News

James Tupper stars in Playing for Keeps.

Handsome, talented and one of TV Guide’s Sexiest Stars as well as Us Weekly’s Sexiest TV Men, actor James Tupper has worked hard to make a name for himself on the big and small screens. He also happens to be a genuinely nice guy, which will likely have moviegoers rooting for him and his character in director Gabriele Muccino’s upcoming feature film Playing for Keeps. It was Muccino’s name that first attracted Tupper to the project. “Gabriele directed The Pursuit of Happyness, and what I liked about the film was that it didn’t shy away from showing a young boy growing up in poverty and

its effects on him,” says the actor. “Gabriele dealt with that head-on, and although Will Smith’s character is a big hero in the film, what he goes through is brutal. “Playing for Keeps is a romantic comedy, but part of it deals with divorce and its impact on children. That fascinated me, so I auditioned for the film, but I thought it went terrible because I didn’t hear anything for about three weeks. Then one day I got a call asking if I could fly to Shreveport, La., to shoot the movie and I said, ‘Are you kidding? You bet,’” he enthuses. In Playing for Keeps, Matt (Tupper) unknowingly becomes a romantic rival when his fiancé Stacie’s (Jessica Biel) ex-husband George (Gerard Butler), a former sports star who has fallen on hard times, comes back into her

life and starts coaching their son’s soccer team. “As is often the case, the heart goes where it wants and the story becomes about everyone trying to be an adult and struggling with adult issues,” explains Tupper. “I had a wonderful time because Gabriele never told me to dumb it down. He said, ‘You go for it and be the best you can be.’ Everyone involved in the movie was a terrific artist, and that made for an amazing (work) experience.” On TV, Tupper recently played the recurring role of David Clarke in the hit series Revenge. Currently, the actor is shooting executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s new pilot, Secret Lives of Husband and Wives. “It’s the story of these suburban couples who are living seemingly normal lives, but then a surprising and violent event shakes up their world,” he says. “Everyone isn’t quite who they appear to be and I’m hoping that audiences will enjoy finding out what’s going on with these characters.”

Jimi Hendrix’s new experience A new Jimi Hendrix album is coming March 5. The musician’s website says People, Hell and Angels contains 12 previously unreleased tracks recorded in 1968 and ’69. Rolling Stone revealed the album cover on its website Wednesday.

Hendrix recorded the songs apart from the Jimi Hendrix Experience as he considered new, experimental directions for his followup to Electric Ladyland. He plays keyboards, percussion and a second guitar on the album. The Associated Press

Maple Bacon Butter Pizza: Foodie touchdown Predictably, the Internet abounds with recipes for pizza made with maple-cured bacon. But to truly take it to the next level — and make it uniquely Canadian — maple syrup is involved, as is an ample helping of butter to keep things interesting. The result is this Maple Bacon Butter Pizza, which is refreshingly simple. A basic crust topped first with mozzarella, then cooked bacon, then more mozzarella and finally dollops of maple compound butter (made by blending softened butter with granulated maple sugar) is all it takes.

1. Heat the oven to 500 F. Lightly coat a baking sheet with cooking spray. 2. In a small bowl, mix together the butter and maple sugar until well blended. Set aside. 3. On a lightly floured surface, carefully roll out the pizza dough to about a 14inch circle. You may need to use your hands to stretch the Ingredients • 3 tbsp butter, softened • 3 tbsp granulated maple sugar • 20-oz ball prepared pizza dough, room temperature • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese • 12 oz bacon, cooked and crumbled • 8-oz ball fresh mozzarella, sliced

This recipe serves four. MATTHEW MEAD/ THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

dough if rolling alone doesn’t work. Transfer the dough to the prepared baking sheet.

4. Sprinkle grated mozzarella cheese evenly over the dough. Top the mozzarella with the bacon, distributing

it evenly over the pizza. Arrange the slices of fresh mozzarella over the bacon. Using 2 spoons, scoop and dollop the maple sugar butter evenly over the pizza. The dollops do not need to be spread; they will melt in the oven.

5. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the crust is puffed and browned and the cheese at the centre of the pizza is lightly browned. Let the pizza rest for 5 minutes before slicing. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Liquid Assets

A hint of Canadiana LIQUID ASSETS

Peter Rockwell @therealwineguy liquidassets@eastlink.ca

Time sure flies when you’re sniffing, sipping and spitting (well, mostly) to please readers. I should know. This is my 200th Liquid Assets column for Metro. I ’ m not the only one acknowledging a major milestone this weekend. On Sunday, The Grey Cup is raising a glass in celebration of a century of guys tossing a football back and forth. I admit I don’t know much about the game. What I do know is whisky, and the anniversary-inspired Gibson’s Finest 100th Grey Cup Limited Edition ($29.95 to $33.29) will put an all-Canadian flavour profile (along with a touch of maple goodness) into your glass. After a few failed attempts to infuse established whiskies from its portfolio with the sweet stuff, Gibson’s official Malt Master created a special blend that includes maple syrup as part of the recipe. The finished spirit is relaxed and soothing with a soft, smoky aroma that releases hints of tropical fruits and caramel. In the mouth, a rich expression of malt is massaged by an undercurrent of vanilla and just a whisper of maple sugar that makes it an ideal whisky to sip on while watching the big game. PRICES REFLECT THE RANGE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. SOME PRODUCTS MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE IN ALL PROVINCES.

Have a few gaps in your schedule you’re looking to fill? Whether you’re hoping to dance, drink or just relax, check out these hot upcoming events.

Who’s Ready for the Heat? Well apparently several thousand of you are ready for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who will take over the MTS Centre Monday. Although a Monday night concert is not ideal, especially a rock concert, the RHCP always do their utmost to wow their beloved and loyal fans. Their latest album, I’m With You, is up for Best Rock album of the Year, so needless to say their new stuff is proving to be pretty good. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.

Time to get Crafty! Yup, Christmas has officially arrived in Winnipeg. The best place to start — if you are really keen — is the Signatures Craft Show and Sale which runs all weekend long at the Convention Centre. You will find everything from tree ornaments, handmade soaps, beautiful Christmas glassware and even some wooden toys for the lil’ones. Check out their website for more info, signatures.ca/Winnipeg.

Art for Dinner? Sing me some Italian If you have never experienced the Manitoba opera in person, you should. Yes, it is sung in Italian; however the performers are so talented that you do not miss a beat in the plot. Last resort, you can read the projected English translations, so no worries, the Manitoba Opera has you covered. Rigoletto, the latest opera, takes place Saturday, as well as a few other select dates. For tickets call 204942-7479.

25 Years of Love! This year marks the 25th anniversary of Winnipeg’s Festival of Tree and Lights. There are various ways you can get involved: You can sponsor a wreath, help decorate a tree, or even volunteer. Over the past quarter of a century this event has raised more than $500,000 for local charities, which truly is something to boast about. This year the event runs from Tuesday through Dec. 9 at the Manitoba Hydro Gallery.

On Thursday you have the opportunity to dine at Storm Bistro, then take part in a private tour of Winnipeg Now, the latest art exhibit at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The dinner is a three course, “exhibit inspired” menu, which is rather intriguing if you ask me. After dinner you get to roam with like-minded art lovers and see what the WAG has to offer. Tickets for nonmembers are $45 and $40 for members. Need more info? Call 204-786.6641.

DVDs, Blu-rays and box sets — Oh my! Keith Carman For Metro

Whether it’s for that special someone or to round out your own collection, Blu-rays and DVDs are always a wise choice come holiday season. Let’s face it: Who’s about to pass on hours of entertainment from the comfort of the family sofa? At that, there are a multitude of films, documentaries and television series releases at this time of year. A few options: Dark Knight Rises (Warner Home Video) Eight years after his last tussle with The Joker, we find

Batman up against a new nemesis. Garnering plenty of acclaim, this action flick’s home video release finds the Blu-ray treated to a 1080p transfer with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, an hour’s worth of IMAX footage and more. The DVD will feature an anamorphic widescreen presentation, 5.1 Dolby Digital audio, an UltraViolet copy of the film and The Journey of Bruce Wayne featurette.

Ted (Universal) Easily one of the year’s more surprising — if not altogether shocking — movies, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s Ted focuses on a “foulmouthed, hard-partying teddy bear and his 35-year-old best friend.” Starring the likes of Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and Giovanni Ribisi, it’s no wonder Ted was No. 1 at the box office. Combining the Bluray, DVD, digital and UltraViolet versions along with extras such as a gag reel, deleted scenes, making-of featurettes, a commentary and more, it might be raunchy but it’s quite rousing.

Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World (Focus Features) A touch oddball but entirely endearing, this rom-com starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley is a perfect reason to pull that loved one closer. Realizing he is alone at the end of the world, Carell searches out his estranged wife with the assistance of a neighbour. Interestingly, her good intentions turn into a rather large monkey wrench. Bond 50: Celebrating Five Decades of James Bond (MGM) For the truly dedicated fan, this bold Blu-ray collection

showcases 007 from start to current: a collectible box featuring all 22 James Bond films. Not enough? Well, it also boasts more than 130 hours of bonus features including never-before-seen content from the Bond archives. Doctor Who Series 7, Part 1 (Warner) In keeping with the U.K. dogooder theme, time-travelling intellectual Doctor Who sees the first instalment of Series 7 hit shelves in both Blu-ray and DVD. Packed with five gripping episodes, this era in the lengthy franchise is lauded as one of its best.

The Simpsons Season 15 (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment) Need something a little lighter on the brain but no less entertaining? The family known to every corner of the globe issues its 15th season just in time for, well, wasting time. Initially airing circa 2003, this release is packed with 22 episodes over four discs and a plethora of extras including deleted scenes, featurettes and Blu-ray-only extra episodes. ParaNorman (Alliance) In this animated feature, a small town is overrun with zombies. It’s up to geeky local boy Norman to save everyone. Able to converse with the dead, it’s his task to eliminate the hordes of ghosts, witches and the like. Packed with a Blu-ray, DVD and Digital copy — all relayed in 3-D — it’s a fun flick for the whole family.

holiday gift guide

Much cooler than just getting an MP3 gift card Keith Carman For Metro

Downloading is certainly fast and easy, but when it comes to festive times, no credit card-sized gift certificate offering musical megabytes comes close to a tangible CD or box set. It’s with this means of piling up presents under the tree that we offer some suggestions for sating melodic enthusiasts. For most people, folk rock tends to be a rather safe bet and who better to place odds on than Canucks Great Big Sea? Issuing their XX (Warner) box set just in time for the holidays, the package showcases two albums (Rogue

Waves and CBC Key Note) as well as the Meet Great Big Sea DVD, 104-page bound book, calendar, two posters, two lyric sheets, postcard, souvenir laminates and stickers. For a little more twang, country folk fans might appreciate Toby Keith’s latest Hope On The Rocks (Universal). To go the extra mile, try the deluxe edition featuring remixes and live versions of tracks. Overall, it’s an album the artist himself wryly described to Billboard Magazine as “the same stuff I usually do.” Now there’s a sales point. Tipping one’s hat to the essence of soul, chanteuse Bettye LaVette’s latest work Thankful N’ Thoughtful (ANTI) has kicked up plenty

of smoke in its mere two-plus months on the shelves. Then again, with 50 years in the business, LaVette knows her away around a solid tune. Some other gents with

their own aesthetic marvel and lengthy time belting out blues-fuelled ditties, ZZ Top issue their first full-length in nine years. Dubbed La Futura (American), it’s packed with

that self-proclaimed “Little Ol’ Band From Texas” at its finest. Speaking of finest, national treasure Neil Young assembles his beloved Crazy Horse crew for Psychedelic Pill (Warner), their first onslaught of warble-throated originals in a full-on decade. With nine tracks clocking in at 85 minutes, it’s sure to satisfy even the most diehard Young freak. For something far more upbeat, consider positively charged anthemic rock vocalist Andrew W.K.’s 10th anniversary edition of legendary debut I Get Wet (Century Media). Available in three versions, its features range from a simple double CD to two-

album gatefold LP boasting bonus tracks and 20-page fullcolour booklet. For devout fans, there’s even a 500-copy limited collector’s edition. Those looking to tide over the more anodized music fans on their gift lists would do well to check out metallions As I Lay Dying’s sixth studio effort Awakened (Metal Blade) as an option. Peaking at No. 11 on the Billboard charts, it clearly hasn’t steered headbangers wrong. Finally, hardcore mainstays Converge shatter all previous expectations via latest Epitaph Records release All We Love We Leave Behind. Thick, pummelling and vicious, it’s perfect for any brawny music buff.

AS USUAL, IT’S A TALE OF TWO QUARTERBACKS Dan Toth winnipeg@metronews.ca

Calgary at Toronto, Sunday, 5:30 p.m. (TSN) It should be no surprise that in a quarterback-driven league, the biggest story heading into the 100th Grey Cup game on Sunday is the remarkable twists of fate experienced by the two starting passers. Calgary’s Kevin Glenn and Toronto’s Ricky Ray couldn’t have imagined their current status a year ago. Last November, Glenn, entrenched as the starter in Hamilton, had just led his Ticats to a triumph over Montreal and into the East final. Ray, seemingly un-

touchable as a legend in Edmonton, was expected to play out his career as an Eskimo. Fast-forward to today and Glenn has emerged as the Stampeders’ surprising playoff leader and hero heading into the Grey Cup Sunday at Rogers Centre in Toronto. Ray, swapped by then-Esks GM Eric Tillman for little

more than a handful of magic beans, is suddenly tasked with leading the Argos in their first “home” Grey Cup in 20 years. The trade was so onesided, some CFL followers still believe the Ray transaction was orchestrated by the league to help the Argos compete for the centennial Grey Cup at home. Conspiracy theorists also suggest the trade was made to appease Argos owner David Braley, who also holds the purse strings in Vancouver and may have saved both teams (and the league) from extinction. Ray is also expected to stoke the dying embers of CFL enthusiasm in Toronto, where the fan base would apparently prefer to attend a Buffalo Bills pre-season game than cheer on the Argos, North America’s oldest football franchise. While Ray is a former Grey Cup champ as an Eskimo, Glenn’s closest brush with the title occurred in the 2007 East final. Despite winning the game, Glenn suffered a broken arm and was sidelined for the championship game. No matter who

wins Sunday, the 2012 Grey Cup champs will be led by a quarterback whose story will dominate the headlines Monday morning. Season series: The Argos won both matchups this season, 39-36 at home in Week 2 and 22-14 at McMahon. The Week 2 contest in Toronto saw Stamps starter Drew Tate sidelined for the rest of the regular season with a dislocated shoulder. The Argos have won

five consecutive games against the Stamps dating back to 2010. Grey Cup history: This will mark the third Grey Cup meeting between the two franchises. Calgary slipped past Toronto 14-11 in the ’71 cup, best remembered for the Leon McQuay fumble. Toronto captured a 36-21 win in the ’91 contest at Winnipeg, one of the coldest Grey Cups on record. CFL a reflection of Canada’s culture: Cohon JESSICA SMITH

Metro in Toronto

From the country’s east-west divide to the way we define ourselves as different from the United States, when Canadians look at the culture of the CFL, it’s just like looking in a mirror. For example, Canada’s history as a country shaped by immigration is shown in the stories of athletes who came here to play, CFL commissioner Mark Cohon said. “That’s the story of Chuck Quoted

Ealey, one of the best black quarterbacks in NCAA who wasn’t drafted to the NFL because of the colour of his skin. He came to Canada and won a Grey Cup with the Tiger-Cats.” Regional divisions and rivalries are true in life and in CFL fandom. “When you talk about Canada, you talk about the competition between the Western provinces and Ontario, the central provinces. Toronto is the natural city that people across the country want to hate,” said Cohon. The decision to host the 100th Grey Cup game in Toronto was partially a bid to grow the comparatively lacklustre enthusiasm for the game in Ontario, he said. It won’t just be Argos fans at the Rogers Centre on Sunday, and that’s the

most important thing, said Cohon. “One of the beauties of the Grey Cup is the people in the stadium all wearing different jerseys. Their affinity is to different teams, but they all get along — and that a reflection of the country as well,” he said. “It’s also a time where people pause and come together, whether they’re in the stadium or watching it on TV. Millions and millions will sit in their living rooms or go to bars and restaurants and be with their friends.” More at metronews.ca •

Bomber Matthews named most outstanding rookie Full circle. Owens’ comeback season helps him edge Cornish to take CFL’s highest honour In 2008, Chad Owens was injured and out of football, unsure about his future. On Thursday night, the Toronto Argonauts’ speedy receiver was named the CFL’s outstanding player. “Four years ago I had no real idea what the CFL was,” said Owens, who accepted the trophy with his nine-year-old son, Chad Jr. “Everything that happened to me prior in my career, it all happened for this moment.” Owens, 30, affectionately dubbed the Flyin’ Hawaiian, got the nod over Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish in voting by the Football Reporters of Canada and the eight CFL head coaches. Owens received 41 of the 57 available ballots. The six-foot, 217-pound Cornish had a record-setting 2012 campaign of his own. He led the CFL with 1,457 rushing yards, the first Canadian to do so since Ottawa’s Orville Lee in 1988. Cornish,

28, also broke Norm Kwong’s 56-year-old record for most rushing yards in a season by a Canuck of 1,437. CFL commissioner Mark Cohon honoured all players who’ve participated in the league, along with their families, presenting them the Commissioner’s Award for making significant contributions to the CFL. Winnipeg receiver Chris Matthews won the league’s top rookie award. The six-foot-five, 229-pound Matthews received 53 votes. He was Winnipeg’s leading receiver as a rookie, sixth overall, with 81 catches for 1,192 yards and seven TDs. “Winnipeg gave me the chance to showcase my talents and I want to thank them,” Matthews said. “But it didn’t come easily to me. “When I first started I was just trying to make the team, everything else kind of just fell into place. This means everything to me.” The other award winners were Jon Cornish (top Canadian), J.C. Sherrit (defensive), Hamilton receiver Chris Williams (special-teams), Lions offensive lineman Jovan Olafioye (lineman), and Montreal receiver Brian Bratton (Tom Pate award, community service). the canadian press

Quick Six

Stampeders mascot will be on the sidelines The CFL and Calgary Stampeders have reached a compromise on Quick Six. The league announced Thursday the Stampeders horse mascot and rider Karyn Drake will be on the sidelines at Rogers Centre on Sunday when Calgary faces the Toronto Argonauts in the 100th Grey Cup. But Quick Six won’t be able to gallop up and down the sidelines when Calgary scores due to a lack of available space and safety concerns. Drake and Quick Six charge down the sidelines at McMahon Stadium when the Stampeders score a touchdown. The compromise comes after league and Stampeders officials met to discuss concerns the mascot wouldn’t be allowed to make the trip to Toronto. The Stampeders arrived in Toronto Tuesday to begin preparations for the Grey Cup but Quick Six and Drake remained in Alberta. “But the CFL is happy to announce that one of Canadian football’s fine traditions, Calgary’s touchdown horse, will be part of Grey Cup history once again,” the league said in a statement. the canadian press

2002

Anthony Calvillo hit Ottawa native Pat Woodcock on a record 99-yard TD strike to lead Montreal past Edmonton 25-16 at Commonwealth Stadium. It was the Alouettes’ first Grey Cup win since ’77 and head coach Don Matthews’ record-tying fifth CFL title.

Edmonton receiver Eddie Brown made a sensational catch in snowy conditions against Toronto at Ivor Wynne Stadium. The ball went through Brown’s hands and bounced up off his foot. Without missing a step, Brown gained control and went 64 yards for the touchdown. But the Argos won the Snow Bowl by a 43-37 score.

1994

Lui Passaglia’s 38-yard field goal with no time showing gave the B.C. Lions a 26-23 win over Baltimore at BC Place. It was the first-ever CFL title game that featured a Canada-U.S. matchup. Passaglia had missed a 37-yard try with 1:02 remaining.

Raghib (Rocket) Ismail had a then-record 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to lead Toronto past Calgary 36-21, bringing success to the Argos ownership group that consisted of John Candy, Wayne Gretzky and former L.A. Kings owner Bruce McNall. Argos quarterback Matt Dunigan played despite a broken collarbone.

1989

Dave Ridgway’s 35-yard field goal with two seconds left earned Saskatchewan a wild 43-40 win over Hamilton. Ticats star Tony Champion, who had two touchdowns despite playing with broken ribs, made a brilliant backwards diving grab that tied the score 40-40.

On a hard, icy field at Olympic Stadium, Alouettes players Tony Proudfoot and Wally Buono came up with the idea of using staples on the bottom of the teams’ shoes to increase traction. The move worked, as Montreal waltzed past Edmonton 41-6.

RG3 shines in return to Lone Star State Robert Griffin III threw for 311 yards and four touchdowns, helping the Washington Redskins beat the Dallas Cowboys 38-31 on Thursday. The Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor made the Cowboys look like an overmatched college team during the decisive second quarter in Griffin’s first pro game in his home state. He got some help from his receivers, including a leaping grab and long run from Pierre Garcon and some nifty footwork in the end zone by Santana Moss. the associated press

Lockout

Hamrlik breaks rank with call for union vote Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz, left, talks with NFL official Jerry Bergman during a disputed play against the Houston Texans in Detroit on Thursday. Because Schwartz threw the flag on a disputed touchdown play, the play could not be reviewed. The Texans won the game in overtime 34-31. Leon Halip/Getty Images

The first true friction within the NHL Players’ Association turned up rather quickly after the NHL had rejected the union’s latest proposal. It was Roman Hamrlik, a 38-year-old defenceman scheduled to earn $3.5 million US, who called out for a vote in a Czech newspaper. Hamrlik is one of a handful of NHLers — like Teemu Selanne and Martin Brodeur — who is going through his third lockout. “There should be voting between players,” Hamrlik reporters in Czech on Wednesday. “If half of players say let’s play, then they should sign new CBA. If there is no season he (Donald Fehr) should leave and we will find someone new. Time is our enemy.” Hamrlik was taken to task by other NHLers for breaking ranks, including Erik Cole.

Schwartz sees red in tough overtime loss CFL. Lions coach makes costly mistake in throwing challenge flag Jim Schwartz threw a challenge flag when he didn’t need to and the Houston Texans made him regret it. Shayne Graham’s 32-yard field goal with 2:21 left in overtime lifted Houston to

a 34-31 win over the Detroit Lions on Thursday after their coach broke an NFL rule by attempting to challenge a scoring play. “Obviously that’s a big break in the game for us,” Houston coach Gary Kubiak said. “But I think you make your breaks when you work your tail off.” Detroit kicker Jason Hanson had a chance to get Schwartz off the hook, but his 47-yard

Quoted

“I knew the rule — you can’t challenge on a turnover or a scoring play — but I was so mad that I overreacted ” Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz field-goal attempt on the fifth possession of the extra period hit the right upright. Lions defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch did, too, on the previous possession when he

couldn’t intercept a pass from Matt Schaub. Schwartz threw a red challenge flag when Houston’s Justin Forsett scored on an 81-yard touchdown run in the

third quarter after two Lions tackled him. Replays showed Forsett’s left knee and elbow hit the turf near midfield, and the automatic review that accompanies all scoring plays probably would have taken the TD off the board. But NFL rules say that throwing the challenge flag on a scoring play negates the review.
