Canadian statistics suggest just eight per cent of victims of sexual violence report their attack. Stevens said part of the problem can be blamed on mixed messages. “They’re told that you can’t consent to sex when you’re drunk or unconscious … and then they’re seeing the police or courts saying nothing can be done about these cases,” she said. Avalon has consistently called for a shift in education to focus on potential perpetrators, rather than emphasizing the responsibility of potential victims. “Our anti-violence and prevention messages are what you can do to keep yourself safe,

and while those may minimize personal risk, they don’t stop the problem from happening,” said Stevens. A Department of Education spokesperson said via email the province is working to ensure the sexual-health curriculum is “current and relevant.” Stevens said Nova Scotia needs a co-ordinated provincial response to sexual violence. “Many of us who do receive funding to do this work, we’re doing it with huge mandates and limited resources,” she said. Blogger Sarah Williams of hrmparent.ca said parents have a part to play in teaching kids about healthy relationships. “Sex ed is one thing, but I think it comes down to those basic morals of respect and consideration that we might be missing out on,” she said. The sexual-assault centre in Halifax says young women are suffering the same victimization as Rehtaeh Parsons every day, and there’s no end in sight. “Sadly, her story is not unknown to us,” said Jackie Stevens, co-ordinator of community and legal education for Avalon Sexual Assault Centre. Rehtaeh took her own life last week, two years after she was allegedly gang raped and then harassed by schoolmates. As the sun set over Halifax on Thursday night, music mingled with incense drifted over Victoria Park as hundreds of people gathered to remember Rehtaeh Parsons. People of all ages came out to the evening vigil in memory of 17-year-old Parsons, who died on Sunday after taking her own life. “A lot of people had these feelings that it was a very shocking and traumatizing thing, and I think it is important for communities to come together when these

things happen,” said El Jones, one of the vigil organizers. Leah Parsons, Rehtaeh’s mother, has said her daughter had been dealing with bullying and depression since being raped by four boys when she was 15. About 300 people gathered in the square, holding photos of Rehtaeh or candles as a young girl wrote messages in chalk on the ground. “Keep your head up,” read one. “We love you Rehtaeh,” said another, surrounded by colourful hearts. Muriel Provencal Rosevear, 71, said she attended because Rehtaeh’s story was so tragic, and it’s important to show other young people coping with depression and bullying they are not alone.

Bourdages said the individual cases often involved transactions of less than $100, and came in with very little information, so they weren’t linked immediately. He said an investigator started putting it all together after spotting some of the commonalities, and the case snowballed from there. “He reached out to other police agencies throughout

the country that had very similar files,” he said. “Once we disseminated that information to our partners, they were able to put these things together, and make one big web that is interconnected.” The alleged scammers used Halifax Public Library computers for Internet access, but spokesperson Kasia Morrison said no user information was divulged to police. “The police alerted us to their evidence and then we banned some patrons on the basis of their evidence,” she said. “Privacy is paramount to us ... so we don’t just willy-nilly give out information.” Bourdages said losses in the case come to more than $150,000.

Near Antigonish. Woman fears for family after pet dog shot in the head A woman in rural Nova Scotia says she fears for the safety of her family after someone shot the family dog in the head. Cindy Partridge says their pet dog Jade survived the shooting on the weekend near Antigonish.

Firefighters battle warehouse blaze A building that was used to house part of the furniture inventory for Yarmouth business W.L. Nelson Ltd. was destroyed by fire early Thursday morning. Aside from the Yarmouth Fire Department, firefighters and equipment from the Lake Vaughan, Port Maitland, Wedgeport and

Eel Brook fire departments were on the scene battling the blaze, that was reported around 7:20 a.m. There were also some firefighters from the Carleton department on site. Fighting the fire was complicated by the water availability at the scene. Acting chief John Wainwright said firefighters were augmenting the town’s water supply with truckedin water brought onto the scene by pumpers.

The echo of sirens throughout the town could be heard for hours Thursday morning as they trucked water to the scene. Thousands of feet of fire hose snaked its way along the street. School hosts ‘groundbreaking’ day for pride and awareness Inclusion. Charles P. Allen high school celebrates LGBT community clark jang

A group of students at Charles P. Allen High School hosted the school’s first ever inclusion day. Orientation Pride and Awareness Day was put on by the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), with a goal to raise awareness about what the GSA does and the experiences of the LGBT community. Tanya Chisholm, a teacher and GSA advisor, called the day “groundbreaking.” “This is the most progressive and excited GSA group I’ve ever worked with,” says Chisholm. “I’m extremely proud. Beyond

proud. Brought to tears.” The 25 GSA members spent two weeks planning the day and canvassing the community for speakers. The day was filled with workshops and guest speakers, including MP Scott Brison, MLA Kelly Regan and spoken word poet Tanya Davis. “The goal is not only to bring more awareness to what the GSA does, but to bring an individual message to any student that they should love themselves first,” says Chisholm. The GSA also wanted to combat homophobic language. Students made videos to show how homophobic language hurts, and presented them to the school. “It’s really important to spread equality in the school and the notion that everyone should be treated the same,” says Kirby Ross, a grade 12 student.

While the LGBT community isn’t taboo at the high school, it isn’t fully accepted yet either. Students are hoping Orientation Pride and Awareness Day can change that. “It’s the homophobic language and the undealtwith atmosphere that there is in the school,” says Yasmin Kawar, a Grade 12 student at C.P. Berry crops delayed as viruses reported Debert-area farms. One of the biggest strawberry producers in province affected Nova Scotia’s agriculture minister says a pair of viruses has affected the strawberry crops of four Debert-area farms.

John MacDonell says there is little evidence of the problem in other strawberrygrowing regions, including the Annapolis Valley. Curtis Millen, a longtime strawberry farmer in Great Village, says the viruses are being carried from plant to plant by insects. He says the viruses have withered an early crop of his berries and will

affect his strawberry crop for June and part of July. Millen’s farm employs more than 200 workers and is considered one of the biggest strawberry producers in the province. MacDonell says his department believes the problem can be eradicated over time by farmers through the use of spray. the canadian press

Hanging from the ceiling and precariously balanced on low ceiling beams at Strange Adventures in downtown Halifax are about 200 toys. Come this Saturday, they’ll be auctioned off for a good cause, with proceeds going to the IWK Health Centre. “The owner’s daughter was

born at the IWK, and it’s just a really worthwhile local charity and a good cause,” employee Kate Leth said. Strange Adventures, the popular Sackville Street comic-book store, is moving to the corner of Prince and Lower Water streets on May 4. Leth says the auction is a way for patrons to remember the store. “We … wanted to give people the chance to have a little piece of Strange Adventures’ history before we open the new shop.” Owner Cal Johnston says some of the toys have been kicking around since the shop’s opening 18 years ago. “It didn’t seem fair putting

The current location of Strange Adventures will remain open for the month of May while it sells off items it cannot move to the new store. “It’s a shame because we really love this location, and we’ve been here a long time … but the new location is really nice and it will be great for tourist season too,” Leth said.

BMW impounded as driver nabbed for speeding A 27-year-old man in Cumberland County faces several impaired-driving charges after police spotted someone driving a BMW 202 kilometres per hour on Wednesday night. RCMP say they clocked the speeding car at 7:45 p.m. on Highway 104 near Springhill. Police tried to catch the vehicle but couldn’t close

A Toronto-based non-governmental organization is tracking the use of hate speech around the world, hoping to help stop genocide before it starts. The Sentinel Project recently launched Hatebase, a wiki-style website that asks the public to contribute to a multilingual dictionary of hateful words and to log incidents in which those words are used. The Hatebase API allows users — potentially governments and NGOs — to map out and chart localized spikes and trends in hate speech in real time. Spikes in hate speech,

when combined with other knowledge about tensions in a region, can be an early warning sign of violence, or of violence escalating to genocide, said Timothy Quinn, an adviser with The Sentinel Project. “When we start layering in hate speech, that gives us an indication — when it’s spiking over time — that tensions are rising,” he said. For example, in Rwanda in the 1990s “inyenzi,” meaning “cockroach,” was a derogatory term for the Tutsi that escalated in use before the genocide, with radio announcers ultimately calling on people to exterminate the cockroach. Defining hate speech, however, isn’t easy. “Hate speech is really defined more by the intent than

the word itself,” Quinn said. “There are some words that might have a benign meaning in some contexts, but in other contexts have a very malignant intent.” For example, without a deeper knowledge of the region, the use of “cockroach” in Rwanda in the ’90s could be attributed to a cockroach infestation, instead of a brewing genocide. The Hatebase dictionary is growing as more people with important knowledge about the world are beginning to use it, Quinn said. “The spread of our users is global,” he said. “We’re starting to get a lot of very localized slurs, which we didn’t have before.”

Relying on user-generated content isn’t without its problems, said Timothy Quinn, an adviser with the Sentinel Project. Hatebase has attracted some people with political agendas who have started arguing over words and definitions that likely have very little value for organizations

concerned about genocide. “I’ve had a couple of Nazis that are pissed off at me. I’ve got a group of anti-feminists that are pissed off that we removed a word we didn’t think was hate speech,” Quinn said. For example, some recent additions to the Hatebase wiki,

such as “patriarchy,” “cis male” and “white privilege,” are found in academic language commonly used in women’s studies. If those words were a sign of genocide, university campuses would be very scary places. Fortunately, Hatebase can distinguish what inputs are rel-

Invitations to Margaret Thatcher’s funeral are going out to more than 2,000 celebrities, dignitaries, colleagues and friends of the late British leader — from former U.S. presidents to Dynasty star Joan Collins to composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. Invitations were being printed Thursday and will be mailed out on Friday, the government said. Thatcher, who died Monday at the age of 87, will be given a funeral with military honours at St. Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday. Though not officially a state funeral, it is the grandest such service seen in Britain since the death in 2002 of the Queen Mother Elizabeth. Queen Elizabeth II will be among the mourners — the first time the monarch has attended a prime minister’s funeral since the death of Winston Churchill in 1965. Field of equal dreams 42. The realities of 1940s racism aren’t toned down in this Jackie Robinson biopic Richard: Mark, I liked this movie. It’s an old-fashioned Hollywood biopic, and I think as that it works well, but I can’t start any conversation about the movie without mentioning Harrison Ford’s performance. He’s the gruff old coot Branch Rickey and Harrison brings him to life with cigar and eyebrow acting, hurumphing his way through the role in an entertaining, but decidedly hammy fashion. What did you make of his performance?

Mark: Richard, there is no movie WITHOUT Harrison Ford. Everyone else is pretty one dimensional, good or evil, including Robinson himself. But Ford brings a little craziness to a very sober biopic. Rickey’s a hard guy to figure out, which is good. Is he just a savvy businessman, as he claims? A closet idealist? An egomaniac looking to claim a place in the history books? Ford always keeps us guessing, which is more than the rest of the movie does. I liked the movie, but really, when the bad guys are redneck racists in the 1940s it’s like shooting catfish in a barrel. RC: I liked Ford too but you take those eyebrows away

and there’s not a whole lot left to that character. 42 is a melodramatic Hollywood biopic with one big moment after the next buoyed by a swelling soundtrack and loads of stock characters, but writer/ director Brian Helgeland doesn’t shy away from the harder edged aspects of the story. He tackles the racism Robinson was greeted with head on and it is often uncomfortable to watch. MB: All too true, and you just can’t believe that kind of overt racism occurred only 70 years ago. But, oh, that soundtrack! Stop telling me how to feel; I feel it already! By the way, I thought

Chris Meloni played an interesting character, a flawed human being with a good essence. I wish he had been in the movie more. And the film had a nice sense of time and place. But although Robinson himself is a hero, he’s forced by history to be a bit of a bore, which is not good for the movie. RC: I thought Chadwick Boseman showed some of the tenacity, talent and strength of character that made Robinson a legend. MB: He was excellent at conveying Robinson’s noble purpose. But you know what they say about the Bible: it’s the Devil that has the best part!

42 covers roughly two years in Jackie Robinson’s (Chadwick Boseman) life, the period in which he went from unknown minor league player to the man who broke the colour barrier in professional baseball. In 1947 there were 400 players in Major League Baseball, 399 white team members and Robinson. Recruited by Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford), owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the first baseman withstood racism from teammates, fans and opposing players to become an icon of the game and civil rights movement.

••••• Saving the world is a lofty goal for a documentary, but that’s not stopping Rob Stewart from trying with Revolution. After championing the cause against shark finning in Sharkwater, Stewart realized that saving sharks was just the tip of the iceberg; ocean acidification would wipe out pretty much everything in the water unless we seriously alter our lifestyles. As altruistic as his cause is, as a film, Revolution is flimsy at best. The narrative, part travelogue, part nature film, is muddled. Stewart throws out facts like moral thunderbolts but does a poor job of summating his position. ian gormely

The Company You Keep, the ninth film Robert Redford has directed — and only the third he has starred in as well — concerns former members of the Weather Underground, the militant, and sometimes violent, anti-Vietnam War organization. A longtime Hollywood liberal, Redford has spoken of the film’s political nature elsewhere. But today he discusses its other aspects. “If you had to break it down in terms of which (theme) is more important, the one for my character is obvious: the love of his daughter,” he explains. When the Feds start round-

ing up ex-members responsible for a violent bank robbery, Redford’s character, who’s innocent of those charges, goes on the lam to clear his name. “What happens when you’re passionate and totally committed to something in your youth, and then that evaporates? You grow out of that position and you’re still stuck because of the trap you created for yourself when you were young. What is the cost of that? (The film is) not about that event that took place in 1970. That’s the kickoff. It’s about their lives right now.” When journalists talk to Redford, inevitably All the President’s Men, the 1976 film about the revelation of Watergate, comes up. “That was not about Watergate. That was not about President Nixon,” he maintains. “It was about those two guys and the work that they did. I wanted to put a light on something I didn’t think many people knew about, which is: how do journalists work? How do they get a story?” The film’s portrait of journalism doesn’t quite mesh

with today. “(Journalism has) changed so drastically, because of the democratization of information. Anyone can put something up. So now it’s harder and harder to find what the truth is,” he says, pointing out that there’s less regulation of the press now. “The rules that governed journalism when I was younger said you had to get

two people to go on record before you could quote a source. That’s gone. What took it away was the need to compete. You had to scoop. Sometimes you couldn’t wait around to do the ethical thing. You had to jump to get ahead of the next guy. It makes Watergate look like a piece of history. It can’t come back.”

A year ago, Tom Cruise was riding a wave of good press with a comeback narrative in full swing. His franchise return Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol had reassured Hollywood that audiences still had an appetite for the star after something of a dry patch, eventually bringing in nearly $700 million worldwide at the box office. And on top of that, he had two high-profile and buzzed-about roles ahead for 2012 — the hair metal musical Rock of Ages and the tough-guy crime thriller Jack Reacher. But then Rock of Ages was met with withering reviews

and disappointing box office numbers, and Jack Reacher underperformed, with neither film opening at No. 1 at the box office. Now, with Cruise’s Oblivion set to launch — following an ad campaign relying heavily on the star’s bankability

— Hollywood finds itself asking the same questions it did before the release of Ghost Protocol: Can Tom Cruise open a movie? The last few years have suggested that the age of the movie star may be over, that audiences are no longer

swayed merely by the presence of a big name on the poster. In fact, until recently it seemed the only two stars left who could be counted on to open a movie — regardless of its content — were Will Smith and Adam Sandler. Smith’s Men

in Black 3 was indeed a blockbuster last year, but it was his first starring role in four years. And the generally review-proof Sandler’s last two live-action outings, Jack and Jill and That’s My Boy, were complete bombs. (It should be noted that Hotel

Transylvania, which featured Sandler’s voice, was a hit.) And so far, 2013 hasn’t been very good to traditional movie stars, with major box office flops for Expendables stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham. Bruce Willis’ A Good Day to Die Hard fared a bit better, at least opening at No. 1, but in eight weeks of release it’s still a long ways off from recouping its $92 million budget. Even Brad Pitt, who is hoping June’s World War Z will do well enough to launch a franchise, took a bath on last November’s Killing Them Softly, which he both starred in and produced. So if Oblivion doesn’t do well, does that mean the Tom Cruise brand is officially in trouble? Not likely. As Ghost Protocol proved, the star has an uncanny ability to bounce back from both critical failures and tabloid talk. And with the more recent Oblivion trailers making the film look more interesting and enticing, maybe Cruise’s latest go at saving the world will also save his career. Again.

“Country and western music,” says Chris O’Dowd, “is a very easy thing to deride.” In The Sapphires O’Dowd plays an Irish musician playing piano in Australia’s outback bars in exchange for beer money. His life is spiralling downward until he discovers a group made up of four of talented Indigenous Australian sisters. Trouble is, he doesn’t like the music they sing. “When I met you,” he says in the film, “you were doing all country and western things and that’s fine, we all make mistakes.” For O’Dowd that speech was art imitating life. “My dad played guitar in pubs playing country and western music,” he says. “So I feel like the whole speech I do about country and western music is something that has been pent up in me since I was 14. Carrying his guitar case to listen to bad Merle Haggard tracks.” “Country and western music is huge in Ireland. I don’t know why. It’s all Kris Kristofferson and a bit of Willie Nelson and Clint

Whereas soul music is like, ‘I’m going to get that bugger back.’ It’s nice. It’s a nice turning point in the film where we’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves. That’s an important element for the entire story. About moving on.” Thinking back on his teenage years, he speculates if his attitude might have been different if dear old dad had sung a different kind of music. “I wonder if he had been an amazing Al Green-esque songster if I would have still said, ‘This is so lame.’ I wonder sometimes with people whose parents are cool. I’ve been working with Rashida Jones recently and I’m like, ‘How can you not think your dad is cool?’”

Much like a human union, when it comes to food and wine, the bride often comes with an entourage that can’t be ignored. Big holiday meals are a classic example. Though the turkey might be the star of the show, every side dish puts its two cents worth into how successful the outcome of the liquid pairing will be. Wraps create an everyday conundrum. They’re sort of like an elaborate meal rolled into one conveniently edible package. This week’s lead recipe combines smoked salmon (that works with many wines, from a pinot noir red to a white, german off-dry riesling), creamy avocado (a chardonnay fan) and capers (which prefer a rosé). The trick is to find a harmonious middle ground, and with this dish, all roads lead to pinot grigio. Typically a light, lean, easygoing style of white wine, it meets many ingredients halfway. With its subtle honeyed flavour and citrusy backbone, Mezzacorona’s 2012 Pinot Grigio ($11.95 to $15.99) has a bit more heft than the average PG, making it a versatile wrap wine.

Purée the ricotta, cream cheese, goat cheese, mayonIngredients • 1/3 cup smooth light ricotta • 2 tbsp light cream cheese • 1/3 cup goat cheese • 2 tbsp light mayonnaise • 2 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1 tsp Dijon mustard • 1/2 tsp crushed fresh garlic • pinch freshly ground black pepper • 4 large tortillas (preferably whole wheat) • 4 pieces leafy lettuce • 4 oz smoked salmon, diced • 1/2 cup diced red onion • 1/2 cup diced ripe avocado • 1 tbsp capers

In June 1994, Saint George’s Round Church on Brunswick Street suffered a devastating fire. One of the final steps in the reconstruction process was the installation of a magnificent Letourneau organ, one of the finest instruments in the Maritimes. On Sunday at 7 p.m., there will be a gala organ concert in the church to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its installation, featuring organist Garth MacPhee and Tempest Baroque Ensemble under the direction of David Greenberg.

The King’s Chorus, a student led choral society based out of the University of King’s College, present Love Songs for Spring Time on Friday. Unlike most university choirs, the King’s Chorus is a non-competitive choir that is open to students, faculty, alumni, and friends of the university. Love Songs for Spring Time will be presented with the Maritime Brass Quintet and composer Paul Halley, a five-time Grammy Award winner.

On display: David Askevold Once upon a Time in the East is an Art Gallery of Nova Scotia travelling exhibition that is coming home to Halifax, on display Saturday through to June, and curated by David Diviney and David Askevold. It was identified by Artforum magazine as one of the top 50 shows of 2011. Zachary Fucale could have been forgiven for showing a little unbridled joy on Wednesday night. But apart from a polite smile, the 17-year-old Halifax Mooseheads netminder was all business before a group of reporters after leading his team to a second-round sweep of the

Gatineau Olympiques. Sure, the reigning Canadian Hockey League goalie of the week acknowledged his strong play between the pipes, allowing just five goals over the entire series. But he was also quick to put those accomplishments and his team’s back-to-back series sweeps into perspective. “We want to keep rolling,” Fucale said. “We want to have a steamroller approach to every game. We haven’t won anything yet.” While the Mooseheads have until next Saturday to prepare for their semifinal series against the winner of the other quarter-final matchup between the Rouyn-Noranda

Josh Johnson put his team in another tough spot with one of the worst outings of his career. The Toronto right-hander was knocked out of the game in the second inning Thursday — the latest poor start by a Blue Jays pitcher — and the Detroit Tigers rolled to an 11-1 win at chilly Comerica Park. Miguel Cabrera tripled, scored twice and even stole a base for the Tigers, and Doug Fister (2-0) allowed a run and eight hits in eight innings. Johnson (0-1) allowed six runs and seven hits in 1 1/3 innings — the shortest start of his career. “I haven’t thrown a slider for a strike yet, and I need that pitch.
