involved, people who witness it or know that it’s happening, that it’s being videoed or photographed,” said Stevens. Canadian statistics suggest just eight per cent of victims of sexual violence report their attack. Stevens said part of the problem can be blamed on mixed messages. “They’re told that you can’t consent to sex when you’re drunk or unconscious … and then they’re seeing the police or courts saying nothing can be done about these cases,” she said. Avalon has consistently called for a shift in education to focus on potential perpetrators, rather than emphasizing the responsibility of potential victims. “Our anti-violence and prevention messages are what you can do to keep yourself safe,

and while those may minimize personal risk, they don’t stop the problem from happening,” said Stevens. A Department of Education spokesperson said via email the province is working to ensure the sexual-health curriculum is “current and relevant.” Stevens said Nova Scotia needs a co-ordinated provincial response to sexual violence. “Many of us who do receive funding to do this work, we’re doing it with huge mandates and limited resources,” she said. Blogger Sarah Williams of hrmparent.ca said parents have a part to play in teaching kids about healthy relationships. “Sex ed is one thing, but I think it comes down to those basic morals of respect and consideration that we might be missing out on,” she said. The sexual-assault centre in Halifax says young women are suffering the same victimization as Rehtaeh Parsons every day, and there’s no end in sight. “Sadly, her story is not unknown to us,” said Jackie Stevens, co-ordinator of community and legal education for Avalon Sexual Assault Centre. Rehtaeh took her own life last week, two years after she was allegedly gang raped and then harassed by schoolmates. In 2011-12, the Avalon Sexual Assault nurse examiner responded to 119 immediate assaults, most involving women between 13 and 25 years old. “What we’re hearing a lot … is there are multiple people

“I think the message here was a very positive one ... one that understands that these issues are still a big part of our society and we all have a responsibility to try and find an answer.” Premier Darrell Dexter

As the sun set over Halifax on Thursday night, music mingled with incense drifted over Victoria Park as hundreds of people gathered to remember Rehtaeh Parsons. People of all ages came out to the evening vigil in memory of 17-year-old Parsons, who died on Sunday after taking her own life. “A lot of people had these feelings that it was a very shocking and traumatizing thing, and I think it is important for communities to come together when these

things happen,” said El Jones, one of the vigil organizers. Leah Parsons, Rehtaeh’s mother, has said her daughter had been dealing with bullying and depression since being raped by four boys when she was 15. About 300 people gathered in the square, holding photos of Rehtaeh or candles as a young girl wrote messages in chalk on the ground. “Keep your head up,” read one. “We love you Rehtaeh,” said another, surrounded by colourful hearts. Muriel Provencal Rosevear, 71, said she attended because Rehtaeh’s story was so tragic, and it’s important to show other young people coping with depression and bullying they are not alone.

“There’s so much stress on them all the time, to try to fit in,” said Provencal Rosevear. “They’re our future, let’s help them in every way we can.” A few members of Rehtaeh’s family spoke during the vigil, including her cousin Angella Parsons. Parsons gave an emotional plea for stronger legislation against cyberbullying and an end to the culture of victim-blaming in rape

cases, but to remember Rehtaeh was a peaceful person. “She was like the little sister I never had,” Parsons said through her tears. “My family asks people not to respond with violence and aggression to this terrible tragedy.” A number of Halifax dignitaries attended the vigil, including Mayor Mike Savage, Premier Darrell Dexter, Tory leader Jamie Baillie and other MLAs. Cabinet minister to oversee Protest. Hacker group sets response to teen suicide up protest Rehtaeh Parsons. Government criticized after justice minister initially ruled out possibility of review Premier Darrell Dexter has appointed a cabinet minister to oversee the provincial government’s response to the death of Rehtaeh Parsons as it tries to quell a storm of anger over how authorities handled her case. Marilyn More, the minister responsible for the status of women, will work with the ministers of justice, education, health and community services to assess support services for people who face sexual violence, Dexter said. He told the legislature he wanted a timely response in

Justice Minister Ross Landry said Thursday he has asked federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson for a meeting next week to discuss ways of improving the Criminal Code that would address bullying. Education Minister Ramona Jennex has also asked the Halifax Regional School Board to review its response to Rehtaeh’s case.

The hacker group Anonymous says it will be holding a peaceful demonstration this weekend to demand justice for Rehteah Parsons. A release says the protest will take place starting at 2 p.m. this Sunday outside 1975 Gottingen St. — home to the headquarters of the Halifax RCMP and Halifax Regional Police. The group says it’s demanding two things: that the RCMP continue to investigate the alleged rape of Parsons, who took her life last week after two years of relentless bullying, and that Justice Minister Ross Landry will launch an investigation into the case that was dismissed by police. “Anonymous is continuing to gather information about the circumstances surrounding Rehtaeh’s death,” the release states. “We are determined to find justice for Rehtaeh.”

The RCMP have said they are aware of reports that some are suggesting harm against people involved in the Rehtaeh Parsons investigation. Pierre Bourdages. “The seller would ask for money to be transferred electronically ... there was never any meeting in person.” The buyer would send the money — but never received the promised product. Bourdages said the individual cases often involved transactions of less than $100, and came in with very little information, so they weren’t linked immediately. He said an investigator started putting it all together after spotting some of the commonalities, and the case snowballed from there. “He reached out to other police agencies throughout

the country that had very similar files,” he said. “Once we disseminated that information to our partners, they were able to put these things together, and make one big web that is interconnected.” The alleged scammers used Halifax Public Library computers for Internet access, but spokesperson Kasia Morrison said no user information was divulged to police. “The police alerted us to their evidence and then we banned some patrons on the basis of their evidence,” she said. “Privacy is paramount to us ... so we don’t just willy-nilly give out information.” Bourdages said losses in the case come to more than $150,000.

Aside from the Yarmouth Fire Department, firefighters and equipment from the Lake Vaughan, Port Maitland, Wedgeport and

Eel Brook fire departments were on the scene battling the blaze, that was reported around 7:20 a.m. There were also some firefighters from the Carleton department on site. Fighting the fire was complicated by the water availability at the scene. Acting chief John Wainwright said firefighters were augmenting the town’s water supply with truckedin water brought onto the scene by pumpers.

The echo of sirens throughout the town could be heard for hours Thursday morning as they trucked water to the scene. Thousands of feet of fire hose snaked its way along the street. Because it was determined early on there was no way to save the building or its contents, firefighters fought the blaze from the exterior and did not enter the building. Yarmouth Vanguard

A Walt Disney–approved classic featuring a magical nanny, her jack-of-all-trades chimney-

sweep friend and two unruly children will be stopping in at Neptune Theatre. At the preview launch on Thursday, artistic director George Pothitos unveiled Mary Poppins as the headline show for Neptune’s 2013-14 season to cheers, applause and a spirited rendition of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. “Mary Poppins — who

hasn’t grown up with Mary Poppins?” Pothitos said. As the man responsible for picking Neptune’s upcoming shows, he is especially excited about Mary Poppins, but says the coming season has something for everyone. “What I look to do is to craft a season that has not just variety, but also speaks to different pockets in our community,” he said. “Some people love

musicals, some people hate musicals. So I make sure they’re both taken care of.” Pothitos also wanted to feature Canadian plays this season. Five of the nine shows feature homegrown content, including the Scotiabank Studio Series, Oil and Water and A Christmas Carol: The Musical, which was adapted by Canadians. “We need to hear stories

about ourselves,” he said. Pothitos hopes the 51st season will give audiences more than a night of entertainment. “If there’s something that can inspire people — even if it’s just having fun with the kids on the weekend — just to bring them back to a core of what we are.” Subscriptions for the 2013-14 season went on sale Thursday. School hosts ‘groundbreaking’ day for pride and awareness Inclusion. Charles P. Allen high school celebrates LGBT community clark jang

halifax@metronews.ca

A group of students at Charles P. Allen High School hosted the school’s first ever inclusion day. Orientation Pride and Awareness Day was put on by the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), with a goal to raise awareness about what the GSA does and the experiences of the LGBT community. Tanya Chisholm, a teacher and GSA advisor, called the day “groundbreaking.” “This is the most progressive and excited GSA group I’ve ever worked with,” says Chisholm. “I’m extremely proud. Beyond

proud. Brought to tears.” The 25 GSA members spent two weeks planning the day and canvassing the community for speakers. The day was filled with workshops and guest speakers, including MP Scott Brison, MLA Kelly Regan and spoken word poet Tanya Davis. “The goal is not only to bring more awareness to what the GSA does, but to bring an individual message to any student that they should love themselves first,” says Chisholm. The GSA also wanted to combat homophobic language. Students made videos to show how homophobic language hurts, and presented them to the school. “It’s really important to spread equality in the school and the notion that everyone should be treated the same,” says Kirby Ross, a grade 12 student.

While the LGBT community isn’t taboo at the high school, it isn’t fully accepted yet either. Students are hoping Orientation Pride and Awareness Day can change that. “It’s the homophobic language and the undealtwith atmosphere that there is in the school,” says Yasmin Kawar, a Grade 12 student at C.P. Allen. “By addressing these issues and the underlying problems, we’ll get over the issue of tolerance and into acceptance instead.” Metro

Berry crops delayed as viruses reported Debert-area farms. One of the biggest strawberry producers in province affected Nova Scotia’s agriculture minister says a pair of viruses has affected the strawberry crops of four Debert-area farms.

John MacDonell says there is little evidence of the problem in other strawberrygrowing regions, including the Annapolis Valley. Curtis Millen, a longtime strawberry farmer in Great Village, says the viruses are being carried from plant to plant by insects. He says the viruses have withered an early crop of his berries and will

affect his strawberry crop for June and part of July. Millen’s farm employs more than 200 workers and is considered one of the biggest strawberry producers in the province. MacDonell says his department believes the problem can be eradicated over time by farmers through the use of spray. the canadian press

Hanging from the ceiling and precariously balanced on low ceiling beams at Strange Adventures in downtown Halifax are about 200 toys. Come this Saturday, they’ll be auctioned off for a good cause, with proceeds going to the IWK Health Centre. “The owner’s daughter was

born at the IWK, and it’s just a really worthwhile local charity and a good cause,” employee Kate Leth said. Strange Adventures, the popular Sackville Street comic-book store, is moving to the corner of Prince and Lower Water streets on May 4. Leth says the auction is a way for patrons to remember the store. “We … wanted to give people the chance to have a little piece of Strange Adventures’ history before we open the new shop.” Owner Cal Johnston says some of the toys have been kicking around since the shop’s opening 18 years ago. “It didn’t seem fair putting

Bidding on the toys has already started in a silent auction on Facebook. By Thursday, bids ranged from about $1 to $65 per toy or toy set. In the store on Saturday, a live auction will be held and bidders are invited to outbid offers on Facebook. Leth says the store hopes to raise $1,000. The current location of Strange Adventures will remain open for the month of May while it sells off items it cannot move to the new store. “It’s a shame because we really love this location, and we’ve been here a long time … but the new location is really nice and it will be great for tourist season too,” Leth said.

Jolie and the G8 supporting the ‘forgotten victims’ of war Angelina Jolie brought her celebrity wattage to London on Thursday to back an urgent cause: fighting sexual violence in military conflicts. The Hollywood star joined British Foreign Secretary William Hague in announcing $36 million in additional funding from G8 nations to go toward preventing sexual violence and ensuring justice for its survivors. For too long, Jolie said, survivors of sexual violence have been “the forgotten victims” of wars in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere. “Today, I believe that their voices have been heard,” she said, alongside Hague, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and others at a meeting of foreign ministers from G8 nations. Baird not sorry for meeting on disputed land Jerusalem. Palestinian Liberation Organization fears minister has set a ‘dangerous precedent’ Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird says he did not cross a line by holding a meeting with Israel’s justice minister in her East Jerusalem office. Baird met Tuesday with Tzipi Livni across the Green Line in disputed territory, which the Palestinians and the UN consider occupied land. Baird says where he has coffee with someone is “irrelevant” to the larger discussion of Middle East peace and does not signal a shift in Canadian foreign policy. “We’re focused on trying to have an impact on the difficult and serious challenges, that being security for Israelis, an end to the conflict and the legitimate aspirations for a state from those in the Palestinian side,” he said

Syria. Rebels say regime slaughtered civilians Syrian government forces launched a counteroffensive in the south, capturing a town and killing at least 45 people, including women and children, opposition activists said Thursday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group reported that they were killed by “shooting, shelling and field execution,” a reference to people reported to have been shot at close range. The attack on the town of Sanamein followed a rebel advance in the area in recent weeks. Rebels captured army bases and a major town in the strategic province of Daraa along the border with

Jordan. “They slaughtered any person they found,” an activist in the nearby town of Busra al-Harir told The Associated Press via Skype. He would not give his name for fear of reprisal. “This is the ugliest massacre since the one in Houla,” he added, referring to a region where government forces killed more than 100 civilians in May. Rebels advancing in the south in recent weeks have been aiming to secure a corridor from the Jordanian border to Damascus about 60 miles away in preparation for an assault on the capital. Skulls lie on display at the Ntarama Genocide Memorial, which occupies a former Catholic church just south of Kigali, Rwanda. Hatebase aims to prevent genocide by tracking hate speech jessica smith

Metro in Toronto

A Toronto-based non-governmental organization is tracking the use of hate speech around the world, hoping to help stop genocide before it starts. The Sentinel Project recently launched Hatebase, a wiki-style website that asks the public to contribute to a multilingual dictionary of hateful words and to log incidents in which those words are used. The Hatebase API allows users — potentially governments and NGOs — to map out and chart localized spikes and trends in hate speech in real time. Spikes in hate speech,

when combined with other knowledge about tensions in a region, can be an early warning sign of violence, or of violence escalating to genocide, said Timothy Quinn, an adviser with The Sentinel Project. “When we start layering in hate speech, that gives us an indication — when it’s spiking over time — that tensions are rising,” he said. For example, in Rwanda in the 1990s “inyenzi,” meaning “cockroach,” was a derogatory term for the Tutsi that escalated in use before the genocide, with radio announcers ultimately calling on people to exterminate the cockroach. While the Sentinel Project focuses on preventing genocide, the upsurge in hateful

language can also indicate other violence that doesn’t necessarily amount to genocide. “God knows, there’s a lot that can happen before then that certainly warrants monitoring and intervention,” Quinn said. Defining hate speech, however, isn’t easy. “Hate speech is really defined more by the intent than

the word itself,” Quinn said. “There are some words that might have a benign meaning in some contexts, but in other contexts have a very malignant intent.” For example, without a deeper knowledge of the region, the use of “cockroach” in Rwanda in the ’90s could be attributed to a cockroach infestation, instead of a brewing genocide. The Hatebase dictionary is growing as more people with important knowledge about the world are beginning to use it, Quinn said. “The spread of our users is global,” he said. “We’re starting to get a lot of very localized slurs, which we didn’t have before.”

Resolving issues with user-generated content

Relying on user-generated content isn’t without its problems, said Timothy Quinn, an adviser with the Sentinel Project. Hatebase has attracted some people with political agendas who have started arguing over words and definitions that likely have very little value for organizations

concerned about genocide. “I’ve had a couple of Nazis that are pissed off at me. I’ve got a group of anti-feminists that are pissed off that we removed a word we didn’t think was hate speech,” Quinn said. For example, some recent additions to the Hatebase wiki,

such as “patriarchy,” “cis male” and “white privilege,” are found in academic language commonly used in women’s studies. If those words were a sign of genocide, university campuses would be very scary places. Fortunately, Hatebase can distinguish what inputs are rel-

evant and doesn’t bother with anything that doesn’t relate to an area of concern, Quinn said. “Some of it is meaningful and some of it is not. Funnily enough, the stuff of dubious value is the stuff people fight about the most,” he said. Jessica Smith/metro in toronto

An Open Letter to Canadians RBC has been in the news this week in a way no company ever wants to be. The recent debate about an outsourcing arrangement for some technology services has raised important questions. While we are compliant with the regulations, the debate has been about something else. The question for many people is not about doing only what the rules require - it’s about doing what employees, clients, shareholders and Canadians expect of RBC. And that’s something we take very much to heart. Despite our best efforts, we don’t always meet everyone’s expectations, and when we get it wrong you are quick to tell us. You have my assurance that I’m listening and we are making the following commitments. First, I want to apologize to the employees affected by this outsourcing arrangement as we should have been more sensitive and helpful to them. All will be offered comparable job opportunities within the bank. Second, we are reviewing our supplier arrangements and policies with a continued focus on Canadian jobs and prosperity, balancing our desire to be both a successful business and a leading corporate citizen.

Fourth, we are preparing a new initiative aimed at helping young people gain an important first work experience in our company, which we will announce in the weeks ahead. RBC proudly employs over 57,000 people in Canada. Over the last four years, despite a challenging global economy, we added almost 3,000 full-time jobs in Canada. We also hire over 2,000 youth in Canada each year and we support thousands more jobs through the purchases we make from Canadian suppliers. As we continue to grow, so will the number of jobs for Canadians. RBC opened for business in 1864 and we have worked hard since then to earn the confidence and support of the community. Today, we remain every bit as committed to earning the right to be our clients’ first choice, providing rewarding careers for our employees, delivering returns to shareholders who invest with us, and supporting the communities in which we are privileged to operate. I’d like to close by thanking our employees, clients, shareholders and community partners for your input and continued support. Sincerely,

Invitations sent for Thatcher funeral A who’s who of mourners. World leaders, politicians, celebrities make the list, including past enemies

Invitations to Margaret Thatcher’s funeral are going out to more than 2,000 celebrities, dignitaries, colleagues and friends of the late British leader — from former U.S. presidents to Dynasty star Joan Collins to composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. Invitations were being printed Thursday and will be mailed out on Friday, the government said. Thatcher, who died Monday at the age of 87, will be given a funeral with military honours at St. Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday. Though not officially a state funeral, it is the grandest such service seen in Britain since the death in 2002 of the Queen Mother Elizabeth. Queen Elizabeth II will be among the mourners — the first time the monarch has attended a prime minister’s funeral since the death of Winston Churchill in 1965. The invitation list includes all surviving U.S. presidents, British politicians past and present, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. Prime Minister David Cameron’s office said the list — drawn up by Thatcher’s family, her Conservative Party and the government — includes representatives of 200 states and organizations

with whom Britain has normal diplomatic relations. Invitees include the ambassador of Argentina, with whom Britain, under Thatcher, fought a 1982 war over the Falkland Islands. Most countries will be represented at the funeral by ambassadors or other officials. Downing St. said the only current and former world leaders invited were those who had a “close connection to Baroness Thatcher.” A representative of Nelson Mandela — whom Thatcher once called a terrorist — has

also been invited. Some of those figures most closely associated with her 1979-1990 tenure already have said they will not attend. Nancy Reagan, widow of U.S. President Ronald Reagan, will send a representative, and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev says poor health prevents him from coming to London. The dress code for the funeral calls for day dress, morning dress, dark suit or “full day ceremonial without swords.” The scale of the funeral — and the multimillion-pound

cost — has drawn criticism. Thatcher is dividing opinion in death, much as her uncompromising free-market economic policies did in life. But Cameron said “it is right to have a ceremonial funeral, with key elements of a state funeral, with the troops lining the route.” “I think people would find us a pretty extraordinary country if we didn’t properly commemorate with dignity, with seriousness, but with also some fanfare ... the passing of this extraordinary woman,” he told Sky News. Princess Alexandra? Baby-name betting heats up Queen Debbie doesn’t quite have the right ring to it. King Bob just sounds wrong. Naming a baby is no easy business, but much more is at stake when it comes to finding the right name for a future monarch. Britain’s bookmakers have some ideas to offer to Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge: Alexandra is the clear favourite, with the odds slashed at 2-1 as of Thursday. One of the bookies, Coral, said that at one point betting on the name became so furi-

ous that it had to suspend it. Elizabeth, Diana and Victoria are close behind, following widespread speculation that the royal couple’s first child will be a girl. All things considered, the bookies are likely on the right track. “Royal names tend to be based on previous monarchs, relatives and godparents to ensure continuity,” said historian Carolyn Harris, who lectures at the University of Toronto’s school of continuing studies.

“(The names) are not generally something out of the blue. It will be something that fits into the royal lineage, names used by previous kings and queens,” she added. Alexandra appears to be a good bet — it’s the name of Queen Elizabeth II’s greatgrandmother, a Danish princess who married Edward VII. It’s not clear why people suddenly became so enthusiastic about the name Alexandra over the past few days, though Simon Clare,

a spokesman for the bookmaker Coral, offered a clue: Many of the bets appeared to be coming in from Berkshire, the county that’s home to royal residence Windsor Castle. “With these sorts of markets you don’t expect a rush of money. Generally it comes once people think they know what’s happened,” he said. He added, however, that it could also just be that “someone at the local pub said Kate quite liked the idea of the name.” THE associated PRESS

RICHARD CROUSE AND MARK BRESLIN

Chadwick Boseman plays Jackie Robinson in 42. HANDOUT

Field of equal dreams 42. The realities of 1940s racism aren’t toned down in this Jackie Robinson biopic Richard: Mark, I liked this movie. It’s an old-fashioned Hollywood biopic, and I think as that it works well, but I can’t start any conversation about the movie without mentioning Harrison Ford’s performance. He’s the gruff old coot Branch Rickey and Harrison brings him to life with cigar and eyebrow acting, hurumphing his way through the role in an entertaining, but decidedly hammy fashion. What did you make of his performance?

Mark: Richard, there is no movie WITHOUT Harrison Ford. Everyone else is pretty one dimensional, good or evil, including Robinson himself. But Ford brings a little craziness to a very sober biopic. Rickey’s a hard guy to figure out, which is good. Is he just a savvy businessman, as he claims? A closet idealist? An egomaniac looking to claim a place in the history books? Ford always keeps us guessing, which is more than the rest of the movie does. I liked the movie, but really, when the bad guys are redneck racists in the 1940s it’s like shooting catfish in a barrel. RC: I liked Ford too but you take those eyebrows away

and there’s not a whole lot left to that character. 42 is a melodramatic Hollywood biopic with one big moment after the next buoyed by a swelling soundtrack and loads of stock characters, but writer/ director Brian Helgeland doesn’t shy away from the harder edged aspects of the story. He tackles the racism Robinson was greeted with head on and it is often uncomfortable to watch. MB: All too true, and you just can’t believe that kind of overt racism occurred only 70 years ago. But, oh, that soundtrack! Stop telling me how to feel; I feel it already! By the way, I thought

Chris Meloni played an interesting character, a flawed human being with a good essence. I wish he had been in the movie more. And the film had a nice sense of time and place. But although Robinson himself is a hero, he’s forced by history to be a bit of a bore, which is not good for the movie. RC: I thought Chadwick Boseman showed some of the tenacity, talent and strength of character that made Robinson a legend. MB: He was excellent at conveying Robinson’s noble purpose. But you know what they say about the Bible: it’s the Devil that has the best part!

SCENE

42 covers roughly two years in Jackie Robinson’s (Chadwick Boseman) life, the period in which he went from unknown minor league player to the man who broke the colour barrier in professional baseball. In 1947 there were 400 players in Major League Baseball, 399 white team members and Robinson. Recruited by Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford), owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the first baseman withstood racism from teammates, fans and opposing players to become an icon of the game and civil rights movement.

••••• Cianfrance’s backwoods grand opera traces a tragic event as it ripples over nearly 20 years. Gosling is extraordinary as a disturbed jittery drifter/bank robber who can charm a crying baby. Cooper appears an hour in for one brief, violent exchange with Gosling and the story becomes his. This 140-minute moral cat-and-mouse game is smart and intriguing, with a unique structure, a restrained, effective script and masterful direction, and top notch performances at every level. anne brodie

On the lam with Redford The Company You Keep. Actor talks Weather Underground and gets philosophical about searching for the truth in journalism

••••• Saving the world is a lofty goal for a documentary, but that’s not stopping Rob Stewart from trying with Revolution. After championing the cause against shark finning in Sharkwater, Stewart realized that saving sharks was just the tip of the iceberg; ocean acidification would wipe out pretty much everything in the water unless we seriously alter our lifestyles. As altruistic as his cause is, as a film, Revolution is flimsy at best. The narrative, part travelogue, part nature film, is muddled. Stewart throws out facts like moral thunderbolts but does a poor job of summating his position. ian gormely

The Company You Keep, the ninth film Robert Redford has directed — and only the third he has starred in as well — concerns former members of the Weather Underground, the militant, and sometimes violent, anti-Vietnam War organization. A longtime Hollywood liberal, Redford has spoken of the film’s political nature elsewhere. But today he discusses its other aspects. “If you had to break it down in terms of which (theme) is more important, the one for my character is obvious: the love of his daughter,” he explains. When the Feds start round-

ing up ex-members responsible for a violent bank robbery, Redford’s character, who’s innocent of those charges, goes on the lam to clear his name. “What happens when you’re passionate and totally committed to something in your youth, and then that evaporates? You grow out of that position and you’re still stuck because of the trap you created for yourself when you were young. What is the cost of that? (The film is) not about that event that took place in 1970. That’s the kickoff. It’s about their lives right now.” When journalists talk to Redford, inevitably All the President’s Men, the 1976 film about the revelation of Watergate, comes up. “That was not about Watergate. That was not about President Nixon,” he maintains. “It was about those two guys and the work that they did. I wanted to put a light on something I didn’t think many people knew about, which is: how do journalists work? How do they get a story?” The film’s portrait of journalism doesn’t quite mesh

with today. “(Journalism has) changed so drastically, because of the democratization of information. Anyone can put something up. So now it’s harder and harder to find what the truth is,” he says, pointing out that there’s less regulation of the press now. “The rules that governed journalism when I was younger said you had to get

two people to go on record before you could quote a source. That’s gone. What took it away was the need to compete. You had to scoop. Sometimes you couldn’t wait around to do the ethical thing. You had to jump to get ahead of the next guy. It makes Watergate look like a piece of history. It can’t come back.”

Will Cruise’s star fade into Oblivion? Sparkle and shine. The last few years have shown even Tommy is fallible at the box office — so how will audiences receive his latest adventure? Ned Ehrbar

Metro World News in Hollywood

A year ago, Tom Cruise was riding a wave of good press with a comeback narrative in full swing. His franchise return Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol had reassured Hollywood that audiences still had an appetite for the star after something of a dry patch, eventually bringing in nearly $700 million worldwide at the box office. And on top of that, he had two high-profile and buzzed-about roles ahead for 2012 — the hair metal musical Rock of Ages and the tough-guy crime thriller Jack Reacher. But then Rock of Ages was met with withering reviews

Tom Cruise’s film Oblivion opens in theatres next Friday. getty images

and disappointing box office numbers, and Jack Reacher underperformed, with neither film opening at No. 1 at the box office. Now, with Cruise’s Oblivion set to launch — following an ad campaign relying heavily on the star’s bankability

— Hollywood finds itself asking the same questions it did before the release of Ghost Protocol: Can Tom Cruise open a movie? The last few years have suggested that the age of the movie star may be over, that audiences are no longer

swayed merely by the presence of a big name on the poster. In fact, until recently it seemed the only two stars left who could be counted on to open a movie — regardless of its content — were Will Smith and Adam Sandler. Smith’s Men

in Black 3 was indeed a blockbuster last year, but it was his first starring role in four years. And the generally review-proof Sandler’s last two live-action outings, Jack and Jill and That’s My Boy, were complete bombs. (It should be noted that Hotel

Transylvania, which featured Sandler’s voice, was a hit.) And so far, 2013 hasn’t been very good to traditional movie stars, with major box office flops for Expendables stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham. Bruce Willis’ A Good Day to Die Hard fared a bit better, at least opening at No. 1, but in eight weeks of release it’s still a long ways off from recouping its $92 million budget. Even Brad Pitt, who is hoping June’s World War Z will do well enough to launch a franchise, took a bath on last November’s Killing Them Softly, which he both starred in and produced. So if Oblivion doesn’t do well, does that mean the Tom Cruise brand is officially in trouble? Not likely. As Ghost Protocol proved, the star has an uncanny ability to bounce back from both critical failures and tabloid talk. And with the more recent Oblivion trailers making the film look more interesting and enticing, maybe Cruise’s latest go at saving the world will also save his career. Again.

No achy breaky hearts for O’Dowd The Sapphires. Actor’s attitude toward country music parallels his character’s beliefs about the genre Richard crouse

scene@metronews.ca

“Country and western music,” says Chris O’Dowd, “is a very easy thing to deride.” In The Sapphires O’Dowd plays an Irish musician playing piano in Australia’s outback bars in exchange for beer money. His life is spiralling downward until he discovers a group made up of four of talented Indigenous Australian sisters. Trouble is, he doesn’t like the music they sing. “When I met you,” he says in the film, “you were doing all country and western things and that’s fine, we all make mistakes.” For O’Dowd that speech was art imitating life. “My dad played guitar in pubs playing country and western music,” he says. “So I feel like the whole speech I do about country and western music is something that has been pent up in me since I was 14. Carrying his guitar case to listen to bad Merle Haggard tracks.” “Country and western music is huge in Ireland. I don’t know why. It’s all Kris Kristofferson and a bit of Willie Nelson and Clint

Black. Dad was really into it. Maybe it’s that country and western has some origins in bluegrass and bluegrass has origins in Irish music. There’s something going on there. And Irish people love a good whine. We’re great at it.” In the film he convinces the girls to trade country for soul music and shapes them into a version of The Supremes. “I wrote this speech about how country music is about loss, but soul music is also about loss — you’ve lost but you haven’t given up — and that has a nice payoff in the film. “Country music is kind of whiny,” he says. “He left me, now what am I going to do with my life? Whereas soul music is like, ‘I’m going to get that bugger back.’ It’s nice. It’s a nice turning point in the film where we’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves. That’s an important element for the entire story. About moving on.” Thinking back on his teenage years, he speculates if his attitude might have been different if dear old dad had sung a different kind of music. “I wonder if he had been an amazing Al Green-esque songster if I would have still said, ‘This is so lame.’ I wonder sometimes with people whose parents are cool. I’ve been working with Rashida Jones recently and I’m like, ‘How can you not think your dad is cool?’”

Come on! Top 5 recurring jokes on Arrested Development TV. Fan sites dedicated to Arrested Development have catalogued dozens of beloved recurring jokes, so coming up with a short list isn’t easy. But here are five of the most memorable jokes that have popped up repeatedly and may reemerge for season four, on Netflix starting May 26. “Come on!”

It’s mostly Gob’s catchphrase but several characters have enthusiastically barked out the famous one-liner throughout the series in a pique of frustration. “I’ve made a huge mistake”

Another line that’s repeatedly uttered by Gob but is borrowed by other characters. The recurring gag is made funnier when Gob says to Michael in an episode, “I’ve never admitted to a mistake.”

Chicken taunts

It’s a family tradition to taunt and mock a fellow Bluth by clucking and dancing like a chicken in their face. Nearly everyone in the family has been seen doing it, with their own personal style, although none do it very well. “Has anyone in this family even seen a chicken?” says Michael Bluth, played by Jason Bateman, in one episode. Never nude

Seasons one and two are littered with references to the affliction suffered by Tobias Funke, played by David Cross, who can’t bring himself to be naked. Next time/Previously on Arrested Development

Some of the funniest quick laughs come during the “Previously on” and “Next time on” segments that bookend episodes — and are typically filled with non sequiturs that completely stray from the show’s real storylines.

10 years later, surprise stars will Give Up again $2,500 towards your education and enter to win

Interview. Jimmy Tamborello, formerly of Postal Service, will reunite with Ben Gibbard for an anniversary tour of their smash hit album

A decade ago, Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard and electronic producer Jimmy Tamborello teamed as the Postal Service and ascended to unlikely heights with their lone album Give Up. Give Up is being reissued with a deluxe 10th anniversary edition Tuesday, the same day the pair launches a reunion tour that will wind through Toronto’s Air Canada Centre on June 11 and Vancouver’s Rogers Arena on July 16. The soft-spoken Tamborello, best-known for recording solo under the Dntel moniker, recently spoke about the initial collaboration, seeing its progression and why Give Up connected.

Group Sales tickets are now available at Empire and Cineplex theatres across Canada!

Submit a written or video essay on what you would do to start the REVOLUTION to save the environment in your community. Ten winners will be chosen from an exclusive committee consisting of Rob Stewart, Les Stroud, Andrew Weaver, Dr. Boris Worm and Ron Suter. No purchase necessary. Contest open to residents of Canada, excluding the province of Quebec, who have reached the age of eighteen (18) years of age or older. Odds of winning depend on the calibre of eligible entries received. Ten (10) Grand Prizes are available to be won, consisting of one $2,500 cash prize to be used towards payment of post secondary schooling valued at $2500CDN). Contest closes May 17th 2013 at 12:59PM EST. To enter and for complete contest rules visit www.clubmetro.com

relaxed. Getting to know somebody while making a poppy record. What did you like about working with Ben? The fact that we were doing it through the mail made it different than most collaborations, because we just weren’t around each other. And we didn’t know each other super well when we started, so maybe in the beginning it was a little bit more reserved.

Like, I didn’t want to say: “Oh, I don’t like that.” And I think he was the same way. (But) I think we liked what each other was doing. Did you suspect early on that it would be such a phenomenon? If not, when did you start to think that way? No, I think both of us didn’t really know how people would take it. It’s totally surprising how many people got into it. Why do you think Give Up connected to the extent that it did? I feel like I try to answer that one a lot and I never have a really good answer for it. I think it has this intimate quality just because of the way we made it and the fact that it was made in our bedrooms and mixed by us. The fact that it’s such a small production makes the melancholy emotional part of it seem more real or genuine. But also, just kind of accidentally, the music came out poppier than I think we even meant it to. So I think that helped too. The Associated Press

METRO DISH OUR TAKE ON THE WORLD OF CELEBRITIES The Word

Kristen Stewart crashes a little kid’s party — sort of

Madonna

Vacancy, my first thought was, “What is KStew doing with a bunch of eight-yearolds?” Apparently, if you broke out as a little person, I will always consider you a little person (don’t get me started on Lil’ Bow Wow.) Anyway, according to E!, the birthday girl arrived around 11 p.m. with Robert Pattinson and about 10 friends in tow, though it was unclear if they knew ahead of time about the band’s party. “They weren’t overly affectionate or anything, but at points they were standing together as they talked to friends,” a source says of Stewart and Pattinson. And then Hanson played pin-the-tail on the donkey, ate confetti cake and all three had temper tantrums when they were told it was bedtime. I’m so sorry, Hanson. Next interview we do together, impress me with your 401K plan and maybe I’ll wrap my head around the fact of your aging.

Couple of the year shockingly having relationship trouble Reports that Rihanna and Chris Brown have broken up might not exactly be accurate, but that doesn’t mean the couple is happy, according to Us Weekly. A source tells the magazine that while the pair hasn’t actually split up, they are fighting all the time. “Every second it’s a blowup and then full-on in love,” the source says. “She’s tour-

ing and working her ass off, and he’s working his off in the studio,” and those busy schedules are adding to the stress. Rihanna is even using work to vent some of her frustrations, asking an audience at an L.A. concert this week, “How many of you are in love? How many of you hate love? ... I’m in that group. The confused group.”

Look. I know the members of Hanson are old and they have, like, 23 kids between them (even the baby drummer has procreated — twice). I’ve interviewed them several times and the voice on the other end wasn’t prepubescent (they are also supersensitive to people thinking they are teenagers, something I learned the hard way when I squealed, “You are so grown up!” to them.) I’ve even listened to their later albums. What I’m saying is: I know they are old and capable of partying. But when I read on E! News that Kristen Stewart decided to celebrate her 23rd birthday by crashing a record release party for the band at L.A. nightspot No

LIFE

Much like a human union, when it comes to food and wine, the bride often comes with an entourage that can’t be ignored. Big holiday meals are a classic example. Though the turkey might be the star of the show, every side dish puts its two cents worth into how successful the outcome of the liquid pairing will be. Wraps create an everyday conundrum. They’re sort of like an elaborate meal rolled into one conveniently edible package. This week’s lead recipe combines smoked salmon (that works with many wines, from a pinot noir red to a white, german off-dry riesling), creamy avocado (a chardonnay fan) and capers (which prefer a rosé). The trick is to find a harmonious middle ground, and with this dish, all roads lead to pinot grigio. Typically a light, lean, easygoing style of white wine, it meets many ingredients halfway. With its subtle honeyed flavour and citrusy backbone, Mezzacorona’s 2012 Pinot Grigio ($11.95 to $15.99) has a bit more heft than the average PG, making it a versatile wrap wine.

For the Love of Spring: King’s Chorus

In June 1994, Saint George’s Round Church on Brunswick Street suffered a devastating fire. One of the final steps in the reconstruction process was the installation of a magnificent Letourneau organ, one of the finest instruments in the Maritimes. On Sunday at 7 p.m., there will be a gala organ concert in the church to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its installation, featuring organist Garth MacPhee and Tempest Baroque Ensemble under the direction of David Greenberg.

The King’s Chorus, a student led choral society based out of the University of King’s College, present Love Songs for Spring Time on Friday. Unlike most university choirs, the King’s Chorus is a non-competitive choir that is open to students, faculty, alumni, and friends of the university. Love Songs for Spring Time will be presented with the Maritime Brass Quintet and composer Paul Halley, a five-time Grammy Award winner.

On display: David Askevold Once upon a Time in the East is an Art Gallery of Nova Scotia travelling exhibition that is coming home to Halifax, on display Saturday through to June, and curated by David Diviney and David Askevold. It was identified by Artforum magazine as one of the top 50 shows of 2011. Our own David Askevold’s work was included in the seminal exhibition Information at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1970 that cemented conceptualism as a genre.

It’s paying off right now and I’m looking to keep it going.” Mooseheads forward Stefan Fournier couldn’t agree more.

In his final year of junior eligibility, he’s having a stellar postseason, leading the league in playoff goals with 11, and sits tied for most points with 19. “I feel tired right now,” he said with a laugh after his Game 4 hat trick. “But we have time to prepare and come back with the same intensity we’ve showed all along.” Going into the break he said he’s far more concerned with maintaining his relentless style of play than his torrid scoring pace. “I can’t predict goals but I can control the way I play, whether I stand in front of the net, go hard to the net (or) go after loose pucks.”

Josh Johnson put his team in another tough spot with one of the worst outings of his career. The Toronto right-hander was knocked out of the game in the second inning Thursday — the latest poor start by a Blue Jays pitcher — and the Detroit Tigers rolled to an 11-1 win at chilly Comerica Park. Miguel Cabrera tripled, scored twice and even stole a base for the Tigers, and Doug Fister (2-0) allowed a run and eight hits in eight innings. Johnson (0-1) allowed six runs and seven hits in 1 1/3 innings — the shortest start of his career. “I haven’t thrown a slider for a strike yet, and I need that pitch. When I’m throwing it for strikes, it is something that the hitters have to think about, but this is two starts now, and it hasn’t happened,” Johnson said. “I didn’t have anything today. They were all over my curveball for some reason, and the fastball was just hanging over the plate.” Prince Fielder had four RBIs and Torii Hunter added three for the Tigers. The temperature at game

to win numerous major titles after he battled with Tiger Woods at the 1999 PGA Championship, losing by a single stroke. Garcia has challenged in other majors, but rarely at the Masters — a course that doesn’t seem to fit his style or shaky putter. In 14 appearances at Augusta National, he has finished in the top 10 only twice. This year, Woods is still the favourite after opening with a 70. But it appears he’ll have a lot of competition. “I felt like I putted well today,” said Woods, whose only lower opening-round score at Augusta was a 68 in 2010. “We’ve got a long way to go.... Today was one of those good days. Let’s enjoy it while it lasts.” Garcia’s 6-under 66 tied him with Aussie Marc Leishman on a cloudy day that was made for going low. metronews.ca WEEKEND, April 12-14, 2013

Aries

March 21 - April 20 If someone questions your motives or authority today, you must make it clear to them that you are the boss and you will do as you please. Say it nicely, of course, but make sure they know that you mean it.

Taurus

April 21 - May 21 Certain people seem to believe you exist solely to look out for their interests. Now is the time to remind them you have needs of your own and that they must come first — always.

Gemini

May 22 - June 21 You may want to explain your actions to loved ones, though chances are they won’t understand so why waste the time. Do what you have to do and let them figure it out.

Cancer

June 22 - July 23 What is the one thing you desire above all? Is there a chance you will get it soon? If not, don’t give up. Make your plans then take a step in the right direction and keep going.

Leo

July 24 - Aug. 23 The planets will have you rushing around in all directions today. One moment you’ll be going this way, the next you’ll be going that way, and half an hour later it will be all change again. Time for a vacation.

Virgo

Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 Why have you allowed your fears to get the better of you? Whatever your problems, you are exaggerating them to such an extent that it is stopping you from taking action. Believe that things will get better.

See today’s answers at metronews.ca/answers.

Crossword: Canada Across and Down

Horoscopes

Libra

Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 It’s not like you to get upset over trivial things but you have allowed minor everyday matters to get under your skin. Don’t worry, over the weekend you’ll find reasons to smile.

Scorpio

Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 What is destined to happen will happen. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you can start turning events to your advantage. Don’t dread the future, welcome it.

Sagittarius

Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 Pluto begins one of its retrograde phases today, which warns of confusion in your dealings with powerful people. It may seem as if they are being unreasonable but be patient. Everything will be OK.

Capricorn

Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 Whatever you decide to do today, someone is sure to be unhappy about it. But that must not stop you from taking whatever action you think is correct. Remember: You cannot please everyone.

Aquarius

Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 You will clash with someone whose way of looking at the world is very different from your own, on the surface at least. Dig a little deeper and you may find you are alike.

Pisces

Feb. 20 - March 20 A friend will do something today that you find hard to understand. It may seem as if they are acting irresponsibly but you could also be expecting too much. SALLY BROMPTON
