A joint RCMP and WPS investigation underway at a Winnipeg home has the family of a slain B.C. woman hopeful her death will lead to peace for others. “It will give us comfort that (she) did not die in vain,” said Jennifer McPherson’s sister, Kim, Thursday on Facebook, under a link to a story about the homicide and its speculated Winnipeg connection. “We hope that it will bring

comfort and justice to other (families) of cold case(s) in Manitoba.” Jennifer, 41, was reported missing last week and later found dead on Hanson Island, B.C., where she had lived for several years with her husband, Traigo Ehkid Andretti. RCMP charged Andretti, 37, with second-degree murder in connection to her death. Sources tell Metro that Jennifer and Andretti previously lived at the rooming house at 97 Lorne Ave., where the WPS Forensic Identification Unit and RCMP have been investi-

gating since Tuesday. Manitoba RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Miles Hiebert would only say the search is part of an ongoing Project Devote investigation connected to a crime in Manitoba. “We have to go where the evidence leads us,” he said. Project Devote probes cold cases of missing and murdered women. A neighbour said he heard what sounded like a jackhammer while officers were in the home Wednesday, but police wouldn’t confirm they are digging in the house.

The new rules will also restrict the number of people in a car to the number of seatbelts in a car, and people in wheelchairs will also need to be secured in a seatbelt, said transportation minister Steve Ashton. Manitoba recently introduced a bylaw on helmet safety, requiring all kids to ride with a bicycle helmet as of May 1 or face a $50 fine.

and, like past years, Stewart said the program uses 60 per cent biological and 40 per cent chemical larvicide. The biological larvicide is used within the city and at environmentally sensitive sites around Winnipeg, while the chemical larvicide is used on larger areas outside the Perimeter Highway. The favourable weather conditions so far have left counts at traps monitoring for adult nuisance mosquitoes reading Stewart’s “favourite number” — zero — when checked for the first time last week. Stewart expects the city to see its first batches of pesky adult mosquitoes take flight by the beginning of June, but he said heavy rains could change that forecast overnight. If the numbers get bad enough this summer Stewart said the city will get to test a new biological fog called Pyrocide, which is made from flowers. If the new fog proves as effective as Malathion, Stewart said his branch might switch completely in the future.

Spike. Collisions rose 7.8% in Manitoba last year Manitoba Public Insurance is stressing the importance of Canada Road Safety Week in the Keystone province after their data shows the rates of collisions on Manitoba roads spiked last year. The insurer said Thursday the province saw a 7.8 per cent increase in collision claims last year, and the awareness week — which runs May 13 to 20 — is a great chance for Manitobans to change their driving behaviour.

“There were 161,466 collision claims reported last year compared to 149,764 in 2011,” said MaryAnn Kempe, MPI’s vice-president of community and corporate relations in a release. “Many of these collisions were directly related to drinking and driving, speeding, aggressive driving and distracted driving — all behaviours which can be easily changed.” Kempe said about 100 drivers are killed on Manitoba roads every year. A former executive director with the Manitoba Liberal Party pleaded guilty Thursday to falsifying signatures on nomination papers during the 2011 provincial election campaign. Dennis Trochim, his voice at times cracking with emotion, told provincial court he was under intense stress when he faked signatures of support for Liberal candidates in the constituencies of Dauphin and Swan River. “I was physically exhausted ... working 18-hour days,” Trochim said.“I just started signing things without even realizing why I did it.” Trochim pleaded guilty to one count of knowingly providing false or misleading information under the provincial Elections Act. Seven other charges were stayed. Provincial court Judge Tim Killeen fined Trochim $3,500. As one of a small number of workers for the Liberal party, which has just one legislature seat, Trochim was the official agent for 12 candidates in 2011. Hours before he forged the signatures, he received a phone call from his father, asking him to come visit. Trochim told the court he said no because he was too busy with the election. Evan Roitenberg, the prosecutor acting on behalf of the provincial elections commissioner, said he sympathized with Trochim’s personal troubles. But Roitenberg pointed out Trochim denied any wrongdoing when first confronted and tried to lay the blame on someone else.

In the name of safety, Manitoba will be the next jurisdiction to ban riding in the back of a pickup truck. Ahhh, PETA. Giant, talking condoms coming to downtown Winnipeg People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is donning latex Friday to remind Winnipeggers about the importance of spaying and neutering cats and dogs. Two PETA members dressed as giant condoms — one pink and one blue — will stand at the corner of Portage Avenue and Edmonton Street over the lunch hour with signs that read: “Condoms Won’t Work: Fix Your Dog/Cat!” “If cats and dogs could wear condoms, tens of thousands of animals would be spared suffering and death,” explained PETA campaigner Emily Lavender of the stunt in a release.

“But they can’t — so it’s up to their guardians to take responsibility for spaying and neutering them.” The man-sized prophylactics will also be handing out leaflets about animal birth control. PETA said spaying one female dog can prevent 67,000 births over six years, and spaying one female cat can prevent 370,000 births in seven years. According to PETA, in 2011, shelters took in more than 200,000 animals across Canada, and of those, more than 70,000 ended up having to be euphonized. Go to PETA.org for more information. metro

Premier cleared of breaking election law He shoots, he misses. Liberal leader Jon Gerrard not happy with outcome Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger has been cleared of any wrongdoing in an election campaign promise involving the Winnipeg Jets. A report from Commissioner of Elections Bill Bowles, obtained by The Canadian Press on Wednesday, rejects a complaint from the Liberal Party that Selinger broke the

law by making a government announcement in the middle of a campaign. “It appears ... the After School Matters program was nothing more than a campaign promise. It was not a program or activity of a government department,” Bowles wrote. “Even if this were a government program, there was no publication or advertisement by a government department ... no government employees or other resources were used.” Selinger found himself on the defensive on Sept 16, 2011, when he announced an afterschool program for inner-city

youth in conjunction with the Jets’ charitable foundation. The Liberals complained that the announcement violated Section 56 (1) of the Elections Finances Act, which says no government “shall publish or advertise any information about its programs or activities in the last 90 days before polling day, and on polling day” except in the case of an emergency such as a flood or forest fire. Bowles ruled that because the press release and news conference were done with NDP staff and volunteers — not government workers — there was

Gangsterism and chaos. Did Laval mayor take an offer he couldn’t refuse? A corruption-related storm ripped through the Montreal area Thursday, wreaking devastation on once-sturdy political machines inside and outside the city. The party that won Montreal’s last municipal election was dissolved. And in the big suburb next door, the mayor who dominated the last six elections was slapped with gangsterism charges. It all occurred in just over an hour. The succession of events underscored how the political order in Montreal has

been overturned during a corruption inquiry, which is just now shifting its focus toward provincial politics. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty killed the $2-million annual stipend for the ELA in last year’s Conservative budget, and even fully funded researchers were being told as recently as last month that no work would be allowed to take place there this year. The facility — not well known outside scientific circles — had become a political embarrassment for the government, a lightning rod for critics who say the spendthrift Conservatives are hacking

away at environmental science while spending huge amounts on advertising and communications. Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield announced Thursday he’s signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Institute for Sustainable Development, “an internationally renowned public policy research institute.” Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has already said the province will help with operating costs, the province of Manitoba is also part of negotiations and others are being sought.

Why the ELA matters

• Founded in 1968 under the long-defunct Fisheries Research Board of Canada, the ELA is credited with critical work on mercury pollution, acid rain, climate change, phosphate pollutants, algae blooms and more. • New research on silver nanoparticles, commonly used in clothing, was interrupted this spring by the 2012 federal funding cut.

Magic mushrooms give some depression sufferers high hopes Potential. Research shows that their active ingredient dampens part of the brain which is overactive in depressed people Kieron Monks

Metro World News

Desperate for a fix, David Nutt considered buying magic mushrooms from the street. Restrictions on the drug were making it impossible to conduct clinical trials, and Nutt had no way to secure the mushrooms that are widely available from illegal dealers. “Fortunately the publicity helped; we are optimistic about the licence and supply now,” Nutt, head of neuropsychopharmacology at Im-

“I’m not saying we will revolutionize depression treatment, but there is a group for whom it will be useful.” U.K. Professor David Nutt

No stranger to controversy — Nutt was fired as government adviser for claiming ecstasy is as safe as horse riding — he is set to push the boundaries with the first trial of magic mushrooms to treat depression. Research has shown that psilocybin, the active ingredient in mushrooms,

dampens the brain’s anterior cingulate cortex, which is overactive in depression sufferers. Trials will target the most severe cases. “The hypothesis is lasting benefits for people who have not

responded to interventions,” says Nutt. If the treatment seems radical, the professor argues it is proportionate. “Depression is the largest cause of disability in Europe, and only two-thirds of people

get well. The rest are out of work and can’t cope — we have to try everything.” But despite a rigorous attachment to evidence, Nutt admits he is fighting a crusade and wants to “tap into

a reservoir” of hard drugs in clinical practice. “It’s a campaign for the liberation of science — drug laws have censored research in this field for 60 years. I think it’s the worst censorship since the Catholic Church stopped Galileo using his telescope.” Psilocybin and other mind-altering drugs are becoming popular solutions to a broad spectrum of mental health issues. A 2012 study found that ecstasy chemical MDMA had a lasting impact on post-traumatic stress disorder. Norwegian academics recently found that LSD improved misuse rates in 59 per cent of alcoholics. “LSD seems to help people see their problems in a different light, to give new insights into their problems ... and to make a strong resolution to discontinue their drinking,” said psychologist Pål Johansen.

The man accused of raping and kidnapping three women, who were missing for about a decade before being found alive at his home, was ordered held Thursday on $8 million bail. Ariel Castro looked down at the ground for almost the entire arraignment hearing. He didn’t speak. The women found alive after a decade in captivity endured lonely, dark lives inside a dingy home where they were raped and allowed outside only a handful of times in disguises while walking to a garage steps away, investigators say. One of their young daughters was also freed from the house. The 52-year-old former school bus driver has emerged as the lone suspect.

Castro’s daughter, Arlene Castro, appeared on Good Morning America on Thursday. She tearfully described being embarrassed and devastated upon learning of her father’s suspected role in her good friend Gina DeJesus’ kidnapping • Arlene was walking home from school with DeJesus in April 2004 just before she disappeared. “I would like to say I’m absolutely so, so sorry,” she said. “I really want to see you Gina and I want you to meet my kids. Disney kills Day of the Dead trademark request

Patently ridiculous. The Mouse backs down after Latino activists mock its attempt to appropriate cultural holiday for film

When Lalo Alcaraz learned this week that Disney was seeking to trademark Dia de los Muertos, the name of the traditional Day of the Dead celebrated by millions in Mexico and the U.S., the cartoonist had an idea. The trademark was for an animated movie by Disney and Pixar Animation Studios Inc. that is inspired by the holiday. The Los-Angeles-based humorist created a movie poster that quickly went viral of a skeletal Godzilla-sized Mickey Mouse, with the words: “It’s coming to trademark your cultura (culture).” Anger and ridicule expressed on social media largely by Latinos began circulating. On Tuesday, Disney said it was no longer seeking a Dia de los Muertos trademark request

RICHARD CROUSE AND MARK BRESLIN

Pushing up Daisy The Great Gatsby. There’s plenty of eye candy here, but the real razzle-dazzle is in Carey Mulligan’s portrayal of Daisy Richard: Mark, Baz Luhrmann may be the perfect person to retell Jay Gatsby’s Roaring Twenties’ story. Equally at home with razzle-dazzle and substance, he captures the tone of the Jazz Age while still allowing the story’s deeper resonance to shine through the gloss. It’s eye candy, pure and simple, and yet the sense of doom that hangs over the beautiful and damned characters in the story is palpable. Without it this would be

just another story about pretty people doing pretty-people things. Mark: Richard, I approached this movie with some trepidation. Luhrmann is such an overwhelming director, and Fitzgerald’s book can be as delicate as chiffon. And for the first half hour, it seemed that the story would be swallowed up in crazed, hallucinogenic fantasias of swirling 3D visuals, not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s amazing to watch. But then the movie settled down and captured the beautiful and tragic romance between Gatsby and Daisy, and became profoundly moving. The actors all play their parts well, but I have to say the film belongs to Carey Mulligan. You, Richard?

RC: Absolutely. Daisy is one of Fitzgerald’s “bright precious things,” a hothouse flower and Mulligan has a face capable of simultaneously showing great happiness and profound sadness, a duality that serves her character well. She effortlessly tosses off shallow lines like, “Your life is adorable,” while digging deep to convey Daisy’s conflicted nature. MB: She’s exactly as I imagined her when I first read the novel over 40 years ago. I wasn’t as sure about DiCaprio at first, but he grew on me. I loved the way Luhrmann took vintage movies of New York in the ’20s and colourized them, and then converted them to 3D. There’s a scene that takes place on a rooftop patio over-

looking Times Square that completely changed the way I imagined Manhattan of the past. But what did you think of the anachronistic score? Did you have an issue with it? RC: It’s probably my least favourite part of the film. I get what Luhrmann was trying to do, but here, unlike Moulin Rouge! it doesn’t really work. The Jazz Age Amy Winehouse song is OK, but the Jay-Z tune feels more like an attempt to sell soundtracks than serve the story. MB: The film is sooooo superior to the 1974 Robert Redford/ Mia Farrow version that I will forgive him almost anything. People will come for the visuals, but they’ll leave touched by the story. And the clothes.

With Star Trek director JJ Abrams’ movie-making app you can convincingly phaser your friends, photon torpedo your car, and have the Enterprise do a realistic fly-by of your house.

People who get Star Wars and Star Trek confused — does that infuriate you? You can’t expect everyone to know. It’s like when you follow a certain religion and you think everyone celebrates Christmas. They don’t! On to Star Trek Into Darkness. The scene where the spaceship is going all over the place and you and Chris Pine are jumping around and hanging off railings. Is that look on your face genuine terror? It was more pain. I had to hang from Chris’ hand and the harness could only go from my one hip so I was

slightly skewed. But no, it was all acting. My three-year-old daughter was on set that day and she assumed that’s what my job was. Hanging. She was like, ‘Are you going to hang today daddy?’” Scotty doesn’t manage to hold on to the bar and is saved by a much stronger Captain Kirk. Ever been like, man, I really wish I had Chris’ body?

You should feel his arms. They’re like oak. We’d go to the gym together and it was amazing how the female contingent would start gravitating towards him. Nobody paid me any attention. But no, I was pretty buff at the time! You guys should have had that chalk you wear in gym class to stop your hands from slipping. It’s not that easy to get on a

falling starship… You and Nick Frost have appeared in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and other films together. If you could, what part would you give him in Star Trek? I’d love him to play Harry Mudd from the original ’66 series. But I wouldn’t necessarily want him to be in it and I don’t think he would want to either. It’s not like we have to

come as a package. You don’t have a love interest in this movie. What about my little guy? That’s my love interest. The little fellow. We’re a unit. We’re married. Your little alien assistant? But you don’t even get to kiss it. I don’t kiss it. But if you could, who would you share a kiss with, Alice Eve or Zoe Saldana? That’s not a choice any man could make. They’re both as gorgeous as each other. They come in and everyone is just like WOW. Your character, Scotty, is Scottish. What’s your favourite night cap? And whom would you share it with? Sparkling water, I don’t drink. Probably my wife. Not a fellow actor? Have you met everyone in Hollywood that you’ve wanted to meet, as a fan? I don’t think you could ever meet everybody. L.A. is like one of those safari parks where you can walk amongst the animals. You see like, Jeff Goldblum in the supermarket.

No ganja on the USS Enterprise Into Darkness. Sulu a far cry from pothead Harold, of Harold & Kumar fame Richard Crouse

scene@metronews.ca

John Cho is best known for playing Harold Lee, the investment banker and pothead from the Harold & Kumar movies. Not exactly the kind of guy you want behind the wheel, but in Star Trek Into Darkness he is Sulu, the senior helmsman of the USS Enterprise. Harold and Sulu are as different as the fans they attract. “They’re more sober,” says the actor of his Star Trek fans. “They call me John Cho. The Harold fans call me Harold. “Star Trek fans have been wonderful. I’ve been blown away by the variety — there are fans all over the world. There are fans of many generations and they are thoughtful people. I was fearful of them. People worked me into a frenzy

about how the fans might take a dislike to the things I did, but they’ve been very warm.” Interestingly, he didn’t consider himself a Star Trek fan when he signed on to take over for George Takei in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot of the series. “When I was a kid I thought the original series looked goofy because of the velour and all that,” he says. “But when I was doing research for the first one I went back and watched them and I realized I had seen them all. I didn’t realize how much

I had consumed over the years and how much I liked it. “I think what I liked about it as a kid is that it was overtly intellectual. They had a way of dealing with issues that didn’t speak its name. They talked about racism and poverty or whatever, but they perfected these worlds; an almost sterile environment in which you could discuss an issue.” Playing Sulu has earned him some new, unexpected fans. “I was at Griffith Park Observatory in L.A. with my family and we were going to see the big telescope and it was closed to the public, but there was an astronomer in there who (recognized me) and he said, ‘Come on in. I became an astronomer because of Star Trek.’” As for the future of the series, Cho says, “(I’m) part of something bigger than yourself and it is a special feeling.” “I have a checkered past. I’m known as a stoner,” he says. “I’m a father now and I’d be happy to make more of these and have my kids watch them.”

•••••

•••••

Good movies about and for older audiences are the new black. Still Mine, shot in northern Ontario and New Brunswick, is one of the best. A woman in her 80’s falls down the stairs, prompting her husband to build a safer home on their property with his own hands. Local planners and unsupportive children block him at every turn but his will is boundless. The meat of the story is the 61- year bond between the couple, made achingly real by two gifted veteran actors.

This bizarre thriller is essentially a 90-minute riff on the concept of lies meant to protect that end up hurting. In this case, that lie concerns Cullen Francis, who, after his mother’s death, discovers that he was the product of a brutal rape. Oddly structured around a series of campfire horror stories, Winnipeg writer-director Shawn Linden does a good job of juggling different character perspectives without losing the narrative. But the film is plagued by jarring shifts in tone. Ian Gormely

••••• At the height of the girl group craze of the late 1960s four Australian Aboriginal teens, tutored by piano player and manager Dave Lovelace (Chris O’Dowd), take a shot at fame. And try not to get shot at during their gigs singing for the troops in Vietnam. The Sapphires is at its best when it embraces its light and fluffy soul. Romances swirl, as do glittery costumes. It’s a slight, but entertaining take, with great performances, on the effect of music to change people’s lives. richard crouse

Goodbye Town, hello platinum single Dave Haywood. After major successes on previous discs, the country ballad band is claiming to be less forced on Golden If Lady Antebellum has yet to have another hit to match the spectacular success of its smouldering 2010 ballad Need You Now — a six-times-platinum single that elicited five Grammy Awards, including song and record of the year — it hasn’t necessarily been for lack of trying. To hear Haywood tell it, Lady Antebellum has never been less forced than on their new album, Golden, out today, after Need You Now and 2011’s Grammywinning Own the Night explored sweeping, meticulously orchestrated country ballads. This is the first Lady Antebellum record that doesn’t feature orchestral strings. Why did you make that

An escape plan

choice? We’ve kind of done some more serious songs on the last few records and always done strings and these big arrangements, big overdubs. And yeah, this one we said, “You know what? Let’s get in,

play these dang songs, and get out.” We really just didn’t spend much time adding a bunch of stuff. It’s not like we’re in there adding like thousands of guitars all over and adding all these extra things. So for us it’s all about

the songs — finding a great song and finding a great arrangement that fits that song. Goodbye Town is one of the more emotional songs on the record. What’s it about? Growing up in a small town,

sometimes you’re kind of stuck in that town. And it’s like, man, what am I going to do to get out of here? Whether or not you had a relationship there, places you go remind you of somebody and it’s like: I gotta just get the heck out of this place. I think that was something we all reached down and felt like we’ve experienced. Musically I think it really conveys that. There’s this kind of energy throughout the song where it’s just, man, I want to get the hell out of here. I think that was one of our favourites to include on the record. The band’s profile has obviously grown a lot over the years. How have you handled that evolution as a group? It’s definitely been a whirl-

wind. When we started, it all happened organically. We started off just writing together because we loved writing music and we still do to this day. I think a lot of people from the outside looking in say: “Didn’t y’all just get put together and you got thrown out there, and didn’t the record label pick all these songs?” That’s really not the case here at all. We wrote all these songs and we said, let’s try writing them for fun, let’s just get a crazy name and do this for fun and then we’ll go back to our other day jobs. It’ll be a side project. Having that mentality from day one, I feel we’ve always kept and tried to preserve how authentic we began, and we don’t want to lose sight of that. The Associated Press

Shakira’s hips, post pregnancy, don’t lie The Voice. Colombian singer dishes on her new baby boy, getting back into shape and life with her co-hosts on the set of The Voice Colombian superstar Shakira is learning how to balance her demanding work schedule with being a new mom one day at a time. “It’s part of motherhood, you know,” she said of juggling her personal and professional life. “You got to figure it out as you go.” The 36-year-old singer and her soccer star boyfriend Gerard Pique welcomed their first child, Milan Pique Mebarak, on Jan. 22. “He’s great. He’s so mellow, but he’s very alert too,” she said in an interview Wednesday night at House of Blues in West Hollywood, Calif. Shakira joined fellow The Voice coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Usher at a red carpet event celebrating

the NBC signing competition’s top 12 finalists. The Voice host Carson Daly said baby Milan has been a welcome addition to the kid-friendly set, which features regular visits from Daly’s young brood. “With Milan it’s a fullblown nursery!” Daly said of Shakira’s baby-proofed double-wide trailer. “It’s just like Shakira’s door opens and It’s a Small World starts playing. It’s built for Milan. And it’s really special and it’s cool. We’re like a little family.”

But according to Shakira, it’s not the children who cause the most trouble. “It’s like a kindergarten because these guys are already babies. They’re babies!” she joked of her fellow coaches. When it comes to getting those famous hips back into pre-baby shape, Shakira said she’s still working on it. “I still have a long way to go. I still have a few pounds over to lose,” she said. “I look decent.” The Associated Press

Age of Maxim’s top sexiest women is a tad off-putting

Maxim’s Hot 100 list, which is a compilation of the world’s sexiest women, is out. Here’s the top five with their ages included. Miley Cyrus, 20, takes top honours, while Selena Gomez, 20 is second,

followed by Rihanna, 25, Mila Kunis, 29, and Jennifer Lawrence, 22. The average age of these hot “women” is 23; the top two cannot legally be hit on in a bar. This makes you feel a little dirty, no?

The 33-year-old bassist for Fall Out Boy (and the ex of one Ashlee Simpson) opens up in a new issue of Rolling Stone about how he sunk into a pill addiction after Fall Out Boy went on hiatus in 2009. The rocker says he abused Xanax and Klonopin, which are primarily used to treat anxiety. “I was probably physically and mentally addicted,” Wentz reveals. “It started from insomnia and anxiety from flying, then it spiralled.

He continues, “I felt like a loser already. I’d basically gone from being the guy in Fall Out Boy to being the guy, who, like, hangs out all day. I didn’t see how I’d ever come out on the other side.” Things only got worse when Wentz split from Simpson. “I was scared of everything. I thought there were always people listening to me,” he says. “Like, I had my house searched for bugs. It was crazy.” Wentz says he is clean now, thanks to his son Bronx, 4, and extensive work with a therapist.

Church leaders have reacted angrily to the release of a video to accompany David Bowie’s latest single, The Next Day, in which he poses as Jesus in a bar. Lord Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury — the global head of the Anglican church — said the video was “juvenile” and urged Christians to “rise above it.” But he also couldn’t resist having a dig: “I

doubt that Bowie would have the courage to use Islamic imagery — I very much doubt it.” The video contains a sequence of Bowie in a bar in robes, striking a Christ-like pose. Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard are also featured. Oldman is dressed as a priest, while Cotillard is in her underwear, with blood spurting from two wounds in her hands.

Peter Rockwell @therealwineguy liquidassets@eastlink.ca

It’s never too early to get your ice cubes in a row when it comes to summertime cocktails. Though popping the cork on a bottle of wine or twisting-off the cap of a chilled beer may be easier, no drink makes your back deck feel more like the Caribbean than a well-made mixed drink. While some are complicated, most cocktails are a lot easier to make than you might think. Warm weather favourites like the Bloody Caesar (invented in Canada), the Margarita and the Cosmopolitan are no-brainers. I love to get my Mojito on this time of year. The Cuban classic, which combines white rum, sugar, lime juice, sparkling water, mint leaves and a bit of muddling, is one of the most refreshing drinks in the mixology handbook. Bacardi — Cuba’s hometown hero — is the standard white rum of choice for a Mojito. I kneel to liquid tradition, but find the new wave of white spiced rums make an even better impression in the glass. Captain Morgan Silver Spiced Rum ($24.49 to $29.99) mixes white spices, vanilla and a subtle sweetness that works wonders with the Mojito’s minty personality. PRICES REFLECT THE RANGE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. SOME PRODUCTS MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE IN ALL PROVINCES.

Scrambled eggs made with velvety brie cheese and savoury smoked salmon is a real treat for a Mother’s Day breakfast. I have given a choice of using natural liquid egg substitutes instead of using three eggs per person, which have excess fat and cholesterol.

1. In large skillet sprayed with vegetable oil, add egg substitute or eggs and milk. 2. On a medium heat continue to scramble just until eggs are almost set. Do not overcook. 3. Serve the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and brie cheese over top and sprinkle with salt and freshly ground pepper. Ingredients Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 5 minutes • 1 1/2 cup egg substitutes or 6 large eggs • 1/4 cup lower fat milk • 1/4 cup diced smoked salmon • 1 1/2 oz diced brie cheese • Pinch of salt and pepper

Fully invested in turning it around CFL. With new stadium and no injuries yet, Bombers look to leave behind lacklustre 2012 It’s almost the dawn of a new CFL season, and once again the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are looking on the bright side after a pretty gloomy 2012. For one thing, they finally have a field to play on that won’t draw jeers, a new one that was supposed to open last year. “It’s something that the club, the city and the CFL should be very proud of,” general manager Joe Mack said Thursday of Investors Group Field. The team even scheduled its first four games on the road in 2012 to accommodate a promised late opening, but the pain brought no gain as construction delays ate up all hope. After a snowy spring, Investors may be short a little landscaping, but Bombers president Garth Buchko said it would definitely be ready June 12 for the

first exhibition game. “Everything from a fan perspective will be virtually 100 per cent complete,” he said, adding that they are nearing a new season-ticket record of 24,000. Quarterback Buck Pierce said the players are also blessed with up-to-date training facilities and other perks at the 33,500-seat stadium, located on the grounds of the University of Manitoba. “At the old place we maybe

had one fridge, a microwave and a coffee pot that worked half the time,” he said. “Here we have everything that we need.” Coach Tim Burke said except for a couple of holes on defence, the team is also in much better shape than it was for much of last season, particularly on offence. The Bombers stumbled out of the gate, finished a disappointing 6-12 and missed the playoffs, after making a Grey

Bombers have backup plans Injuries played a major factor in the Blue Bombers’ woes in 2012, not the least the concussion and other ailments that sidelined Buck Pierce. Pierce is back as

Cup appearance in 2011. It cost coach Paul LaPolice his job midseason. Offensive co-ordinator Gary Crowton now has a year of CFL football under his belt and Burke says that should lead to more production. “I think we’re in much better shape as a team than where we were when I took over as interim coach,” said Burke. During the off-season, the Bombers lost defensive end Jason Vega to the NFL and linebacker Marcellus Bowman to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who weren’t put off by his knee surgery. “Other than that, I feel pretty good defensively as far as the guys coming back,” said Burke. He feels Cauchy Muamba is an upgrade at free safety and can’t say enough good things about his brother, linebacker Henoc Muamba. Mack added that he would be saying a rosary every day to try and keep the team healthy. “I think if we can stay healthy we have a chance to be pretty competitive.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis says it’s time to reset the organization. He held a season-ending media availability Thursday after the Canucks were swept by the San Jose Sharks in their Western Conference quarter-final. Gillis says he plans to review every element of the organization — including the performance of head coach Alain Vigneault — before any decisions are made. THE CANADIAN PRESS IIHF world championship

No Price, no Prust, no Gionta, no chance for Habs NHL playoffs. Injuries cripple Canadiens as Senators streak through to Round 2

Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson celebrates after scoring a third-period goal on Canadiens goaltender Peter Budaj during Game 5 of their first-round playoff series on Thursday night in Montreal. The Sens got a 6-1 seriesclinching win over the Habs. Graham Hughes/The Canadian Press

The Ottawa Senators are moving on to the second round of the NHL playoffs. Craig Anderson made 33 saves and Cory Conacher scored twice on a shaky Peter Budaj as the Senators downed the Montreal Canadiens 6-1 on Thursday night. Ottawa won the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal 4-1 and will move on to the second round for the first time since 2007, when they reached the Stanley Cup final only to fall to the Anaheim Ducks. The victory gives Ottawa time to rest up and heal bruises before the conference semifinals begin next week. Zack Smith, Kyle Turris, Daniel Alfredsson and Erik Condra also scored for Ottawa, who

were underdogs as the seventh seed in the East but who were bolstered down the stretch by the return of top players like defencemen Erik Karlsson and Jared Cowen. The Habs on the other hand had five players injured in the series, including Carey Price and forwards Brian Gionta, Lars Eller, Brandon Prust and Ryan White. P.K. Subban scored for injury-stricken Montreal, which failed to solve Anderson. They scored only nine goals in the series, while their own spotty goaltending allowed 20. Budaj made 23 saves.

Nationals hang on to sweep the Tigers Tamed Tigers. Detroit won nine of their last 10 games before getting swept by the Nationals Ryan Mattheus, Drew Storen and Rafael Soriano combined for shutout relief after Dan Haren nearly squandered a four-run lead, and the Washington Nationals beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 Thursday to complete a two-game sweep of the AL champions. Adam LaRoche singled in the first and second innings for his first consecutive multihit games this season, helping the Nationals to their first four-game winning streak of the year. Ryan Zimmerman, in a 2-for-14 slide coming in, had three hits. Bryce Harper hit an RBI groundout in the first following Denard Span’s lead-

off double, and Harper came home from second when LaRoche singled and centrefielder Austin Jackson let the ball get past him for an error. Ian Desmond followed with a run-scoring single for a 3-1 lead. Tigers pitcher Doug Fister

(4-1) had an RBI single in the second off Haren (4-3), but the Nationals made it 5-1 in the bottom half on consecutive run-scoring singles by Zimmerman and LaRoche. Haren allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings, giving up a three-run homer in the sixth to Matt Tuiasosopo. That was the Tigers’ first home run by a pinch hitter since Ryan Rayburn at the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 14, 2011. Washington’s three relievers had identical lines, each giving up a hit and striking out a batter in an inning. Soriano converted his 12th save in 13 chances, retiring Prince Fielder on a game-ending flyout to the centre-field warning track with a man on. Detroit had entered with nine wins in 10 games only to get swept for the first time since losing three games at the Los Angeles Angels from April 19-21. Omar Infante had three hits for the Tigers. the associated press

Major League Baseball said the umpires were wrong. The Athletics knew that all along. “We saw what we saw last night,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. One day after umpire Angel Hernandez and his crew failed to reverse an obvious game-tying home run by A’s infielder Adam Rosales in the ninth inning following a video review, MLB executive vice-president Joe Torre said an “improper call” was made in Wednesday’s game between the Indians and Athletics. However, despite pointing out the critical error, Torre said the “judgment” call will stand. The Indians won 4-3, and went on to sweep the four-game series with a 9-2 victory over the A’s on Thursday. The associated press
