Adam Lardner, manager of the Oasis Pub and Eatery on Spring Garden Road, said the game is a “big deal” and a first for the Mooseheads in their 19-year history. Lardner said although it hasn’t been full during the Memorial Cup just yet, “there’s definitely been a Moose contingent amongst all the NHL-watchers.” “These are those kids that you’re going to see in a couple years on your favourite NHL team, and you get to say ‘I saw that guy score in that game before he ever made the NHL.’” Fans can also watch the game for free outside in Grand Parade, when the Mooseheads play against their still-to-bedecided opponent at 8 p.m. The game is also being carried live on Sportsnet. “To be able to cheer them on in the final game of what is arguably the hardest trophy to win in sports, I mean that’s something,” Lardner said.

Liberal rally. Trudeau touching down at Dartmouth High School
THE CANADIAN PRESS FILE
Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau will be in Halifax on Friday to visit high-school students and meet with supporters. Trudeau will address students at Dartmouth High School in the afternoon, where kids will perform a ukulele tune and stage a short play. Trudeau will then attend a Liberal rally at Pier 21 at 6 p.m., which is a free event. In a letter to supporters, Trudeau said Nova Scotia Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil will join him at the rally to “bring together federal and provincial Liberals to talk about the country we are building together.” He has come under attack in recent Conservative ads that say he’s in “way over his head,” and question the former drama teacher’s political knowhow. Trudeau replied that he will never run a negative campaign, and according to a new Forum Research poll, 44 per cent of Canadians said they would vote Liberal in the next federal election. METRO

Multimillion-dollar renovations of Halifax Stanfield International Airport will pull the facility ahead of the pack in Canada, airport staff said on Thursday Dean Bouchard, director
of infrastructure, said the airport is upgrading its baggage system, and Halifax will be the only airport in the country to have the advanced screening system in both its domestic/international and trans-border check-in halls. “This will be one of the leading check-in halls in the country,” Bouchard said, as passengers toted luggage throughout the hall. The upgrade is part of a $44.5-million project that will also see renovations to the check-in area and facade of the departures side of the terminal building.

50%
The number of passengers at the airport has grown by 50 per cent since the check-in hall was last renovated in 1998.
Bouchard said a floor-toceiling glass wall will complement a new raised roof — about nine metres high — in the check-in hall, which will mirror the arrivals section. The check-in counter will also be moved back about nine metres to add more self-serve
check-in kiosks, a technology that the hall wasn’t designed to accommodate. “It will give us more space to revamp the layout, make better use of technology and create more circulation,” Bouchard said, adding the upgrades will position the airport to meet the needs of future growth. Construction will take place over the next year. Passengers will notice construction in the passenger drop-off and check-in areas. The work will be done in phases and signs will posted to direct passengers.

‘I want him to suffer’: Mom of teen, after captor pleads guilty Sentencing hearing. David LeBlanc is set to appear in court on June 14 The mother of a teenage boy who was kidnapped and sexually assaulted for days says she was overwhelmed to see her son’s abuser in court, admitting she wanted him to suffer after hearing him plead guilty to the charges. With her hands shaking and emotion straining her voice, the woman said outside court that her 16-year-old son is trying to put behind him the days of captivity and abuse inflicted on him last September in a home in rural Nova Scotia. The mother, who cannot be identified, said she didn’t anticipate how difficult it would be to hear David James LeBlanc plead guilty to kidnapping, forcible confinement, sexual assault, uttering threats and breach of conditions. “It was hard,” she said. “As a

Normally I’m not like that, but it was just overwhelming. “I want him to suffer.” LeBlanc, 48, entered the pleas Thursday in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Bridgewater, where two other charges — sexual assault causing bodily harm and administering a noxious substance with intent to cause bodily harm — were withdrawn. Slumped in a wheelchair and with his thin hands clasped on his lap, LeBlanc said he understood the charges and the maximum penalties that come
with them. “Yes, Your Honour,” he said clearly when asked by the judge if he freely changed his plea to guilty. LeBlanc was charged after a woman reported in September that a barefoot teenager arrived at her doorstep in Upper Chelsea, about 130 kilometres southwest of Halifax, chained at his wrists and ankles. LeBlanc was arrested Sept. 30 in northern Ontario after a Canada-wide manhunt. The boy’s mother said outside court that her son went with a man on the promise of a painting job, but said he was drugged and woke up in chains. She said he escaped once and was recaptured, but finally got away. Crown prosecutor Lloyd Tancock said the guilty pleas mean that what would have likely been a lengthy trial with up to 20 witnesses will now not go ahead. He said it also shielded the young victim from having to testify or endure a difficult trial. The Canadian Press

Too many kids boozing, smoking, hurting: Study Disturbing trends. Experts say new ideas, culture shift needed to address alcohol use, mental-health issues among N.S. students RUTH DAVENPORT
ruth.davenport@metronews.ca
The latest survey on drug use among students proves the status quo isn’t working, health experts say. The 2012 Nova Scotia Student Drug Use Survey shows alcohol and marijuana use haven’t declined since the last survey in 2007, though tobacco use has fallen. Nearly half of the respondents had used alcohol, and more than one-quarter reported engaging in binge drinking. More worrying was the number of students who said they had driven within an hour of having drinks or had unplanned sex while
under the influence. Chief public health officer Dr. Robert Strang said the results show the urgent need for a culture shift around the use of alcohol. “We need to be prepared, collectively, to do things very differently,” he said. “Let’s learn from tobacco, where we had the courage and willingness to do some things pretty differently.” The survey also included questions about mental health for the first time, with results one expert called “dismaying.” Nearly one-quarter of the respondents met the criteria for somewhat elevated depressive symptoms, and nearly 20 per cent had seriously considered suicide in the year before the survey. “Certainly we see many, many youth ... who come in suicidal, so that part doesn’t surprise me,” said Dr. Kathleen Pajer, chief of the IWK’s department of psychiatry. “It was dismaying.” The minister handling several reviews related to the

recent suicide of Rehtaeh Parsons said the government is working to improve mentalhealth support. “Over the past six weeks we have seen a collective determination to do things differently around these issues, and we have started to work differently together,” said Marilyn More. Pajer said the key to help-
ing kids battle substance abuse and mental health disorders lies in simply being willing to talk. “Part of a kid’s job is to try new things and do risky things, but some kids get snared and other kids don’t,” she said. “The kids who are generally resilient … most often have someone in their lives who they’re connected

Nova Scotia’s chief medical officer says a proposal from the Progressive Conservative party of Nova Scotia to allow the sale of beer and wine in grocery stores would increase alcohol abuse among minors. “We know from literature and evidence that increasing access to alcohol, privatizing the sale of alcohol would … especially make it much
more easy for youth to access and purchase alcohol,” said chief public health officer Dr. Robert Strang. The Tories released a discussion paper on Thursday asking for public input on the idea. A press release suggests taxpayers aren’t getting good value from the NSLC, stating the operating expenses have doubled in the past decade, while sales have remained
the same. “The way we sell beer and wine is outdated and it’s time we look at modern ways to serve customers and create jobs,” PC party leader Jamie Baillie said in a release. Finance Minister Maureen MacDonald said Thursday the PC government of John Hamm already concluded the current model best serves
part in the survey. The complete results can be seen online at novascotia.ca/dhw.

Corbett commented on workplace safety after the recent deaths of two workers in Halifax. A 39-year-old man died Tuesday when he was electrocuted while working at a plaza on Chain Lake Drive. Suicide attacks kill 26 in Niger
Stockholm riots still burn Thursday saw the fourth night of rioting in suburbs around Stockholm, Sweden. Youths have burned down a restaurant, torched more than 30 cars and injured three police. Few dispute that the violence was touched off by the fatal police shooting of an elderly man who had locked himself in an apartment with a knife. Suicide bombers in Niger detonated two car bombs on Thursday, one inside a military camp and another at a French-run uranium mine, killing 26 people and injuring 30, officials said. The attack on the mine was claimed by the extremist who led the attack on a gas plant in Algeria, according to a post on jihadist forums. Breast cancer. Ont. researcher explains breakthrough
Western University’s John P. Wiebe has turned up hormones that could change the way some breast-cancer patients are treated. Angela Mullins/Metro in London
The lead researcher of a Western University breast-cancer study says he has identified new hormones that “may suppress breast cancer and stimulate the regression of breast tumours.” Prof. John P. Wiebe’s work was recently published in the Breast Cancer Research journal. “Basically, we’ve got the first explanation of what causes receptor-negative breast cancer,” said Wiebe, who works in
London, Ont. There are two types of breast cancer: receptor-negative and receptor-positive. Receptornegative cases, which Wiebe says have the higher mortality rate of the two, do not respond to hormonal therapies such as tamoxifen. That means patients are forced into chemo or radiation therapy immediately. Wiebe’s discovery, however, could turn the tide. John Matisz/Metro in London

Drone strikes necessary in fight against terror: Obama Security policy. U.S. president also announces a renewed push to close Guantanamo Bay U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday defended America’s controversial drone attacks as legal, effective and a necessary linchpin in an evolving U.S. counterterrorism policy. But he acknowledged the targeted strikes are no “cure-all” and said he is haunted by the civilians unintentionally killed. The president also announced a renewed push to close the Guantanamo Bay detention centre in Cuba, including lifting a moratorium on prisoner transfers to Yemen. However, shutting the prison will still require help from Republicans reluctant to back Obama’s call to move some detainees to U.S. prisons and try them in civilian courts. Senate hands expense claim documents over to Mounties Growing controversy. Debate continues to rage over report as Sen. Mike Duffy shrugs off suggestions he should resign
The Senate has turned over documents to the Mounties to help their investigation into improper expense claims. Senate Speaker Noel Kin-
sella says the RCMP’s sensitive and international investigations unit is examining the claims of senators Mike Duffy, Mac Harb and Patrick Brazeau. The police asked for documents related to the Senate’s travel and expenses policies. A debate is still raging over whether Conservatives on a committee reviewing Duffy’s expenses whitewashed their report into the matter. The controversy grew Thursday as the Con-
servative in charge of the probe admitted he got advice from Stephen Harper’s team. Sen. David Tkachuk, one of a three-member special subcommittee studying Duffy’s housing expenses, told Maclean’s magazine that he spoke to people in Harper’s office — including former chief of staff Nigel Wright — about the issue. Duffy spoke out Thursday for the first time since the scandal erupted last week, insisting that he looks for-
ward to a complete airing of all the facts and dismissing suggestions he should resign his Senate seat. The former broadcaster literally blew out air in apparent exasperation when asked if he felt he should resign, instead saying that he’d be back at work in the Senate next week. “Why wouldn’t I?” Duffy asked reporters as he climbed into his vehicle on Parliament Hill. the canadian press

‘Stephen Disney’ arrested over stolen park passes Authorities say a man has been arrested after claiming to be a member of the Disney family and giving away invalid Disneyland passes. Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials say the man called himself “Stephen Disney” and had a fake driver’s licence and tax forms. The statement says he gave Disneyland passes to a woman for a raffle. Authorities say police determined the man’s name is Stephen David Urquidez and the passes were stolen.
The chief of staff to Toronto’s embattled Mayor Rob Ford was escorted by security from city hall Thursday as allegations the mayor had been caught on videotape smoking crack cocaine continued to swirl. Mark Towhey said he did not resign but his departure had not come as a shock to him. “The mayor and I spoke about it this afternoon,” Towhey said as reporters trailed him through the underground parking lot. Towhey refused to elaborate on the conversation or say what advice he had given Ford about the alleged video. “My conversations with the mayor are between the mayor and me,” Towhey said. Last week, both the American-based website Gawker. com and Torstar News Service reported they had seen — but not obtained — a video made by a west-end drug dealer who

Canada’s privacy commissioner Jennifer Stoddart says she’s tried naming and shaming some of the world’s largest companies, but it hasn’t really worked. So she wants to hit them on their bottom lines. Stoddart wants Canada’s Federal Court to have the power to impose punishing penalties when organizations run afoul of privacy laws.
Pointing to a record-high $22.5-million US fine levied against Google last year by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Stoddart says there’s no reason Canada can’t be just as tough. “That kind of fine gets the attention of the organization the way my requests to change their practices and give us a report doesn’t,” says Stoddart. the canadian press

First of 24 victims laid to rest in town hit by tornado New thunderstorms. Hail, heavy rain and high winds hampering cleanup and recovery efforts that had just begun to accelerate A band of thunderstorms battered the Oklahoma City area Thursday, slowing cleanup operations in the town where a tornado killed 24 people and destroyed thousands of homes this week. The first of the funerals, for a nine-year-old girl killed at a Moore elementary school that took a direct hit in Monday’s storm, was held Thursday morning. A family photo showed the girl, Antonia Candelaria, with a big smile and wearing a white sun hat.
Children
The medical examiner reported that six of the children who died at Plaza Towers school suffocated after being buried under a mass of bricks, steel and other materials as the building collapsed. • A seventh child, eightyear-old Kyle Davis, was killed instantly by a large stone or a beam that struck his neck.
Early estimates indicate the tornado caused more than $2 billion US of damage in Moore. Whole subdivisions in the fast-growing community of 56,000 people were destroyed. Authorities estimated that as many as 13,000 homes were damaged or de-
stroyed and 33,000 people were affected. Two elementary schools were hit — one levelled — by Monday’s tornado. Candelaria was one of seven children who perished at the Plaza Towers Elementary School, a one-storey building with barely a wall left standing. Altogether, 10 children were killed, including two infants. Residents, allowed back into the damage zone, picked through enormous piles of debris. Shayne Patteson was among them, moving around the ruins of his three-bedroom home. All that was left was the tiny area where his wife hunkered down under a mattress to protect their three children when a tornado packing winds of at least 320 km/h slammed through his neighbourhood. Foreign journalists were not allowed access to the court, and government officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. How sweet it isn’t This male German cockroach is busy checking out a flavoured test substance dyed blue by researchers. On Thursday, scientists said they had discovered why anti-cockroach products — specifically, sweet-tasting bait mixed with poison — stopped working well in the early 1990s. Turns out, the cockroaches hadn’t simply lost their sweet tooth. The key, scientists say, is certain neurons that signal the brain about food. Studying how cockroaches evolve to evade our poisons may provide clues to designing bait that the critters cannot resist.

RICHARD CROUSE AND MARK BRESLIN
Could crash test dummies stand in for the cast of Fast & Furious 6? HANDOUT
Fast & Furious medley Nothing new. Now at the half-dozen mark, auto action series’ latest film is more like a greatest hits mashup than its own creation Richard: Mark, this is the culmination of the previous five. A greatest hits — literally, there are some wild crashes here — featuring characters from most of the films in the series. All the old faves are back — drug lord Braga, Hobbs and even Letty who was presumed dead in the last instalment — in a story that doesn’t make a great deal of sense, but if it was supposed to make sense it would be
called Sedans and Sensibility or maybe Of Miatas and Men. But no, this is a Fast & Furious movie that plays fast and furious with believability but still delivers a pretty good time at the movies. What’s your take? MB: SPOILER ALERT: THERE ARE CAR CRASHES IN THIS MOVIE. Richard, I’m so glad we got a sixth instalment of the franchise because somehow there were just too many unexplored nuances in the first five. But if it’s action you’re after, you won’t be disappointed. You’re right; the story is secondary; in fact, almost irrelevant. But the relationships among the characters also seem unimportant here. There seemed to be
more emotional connection in Fast and Furious 2, 3, and 5 — or was it 1, 3, and 4? Anyway, you get my point. But things certainly go boom. RC: They sure do. The action scenes here feature the fanciest stunt driving this side of Evel Knievel. To quote the movie, “We’re talking vehicular warfare!” And that’s what people want to see from these movies. Sure the talk of friendship and loyalty is the overriding theme, but that wouldn’t mean much if cars don’t become airborne before they burst into flames. What did you think of Vin Diesel? MB: SPOILER ALERT: THERE ARE FIST FIGHTS IN THIS
MOVIE. Richard, Vin Diesel has less personality than some of the cars. And Paul Walker must have been cast ages ago to make him look like a trained actor. The truth is, I’d watch these movies if they used crash test dummies in the leads. The pyrotechnics are dazzling and the cars are great to look at. Toward the end of the film there’s a stunt that’s so breathtaking it transcends the actors involved. So Diesel is as good as the film needs him to be. RC: I liked how every line he speaks sounds as though he’s dragging it through sandpaper. MB: If there were ever a guy who needed auto-tune, it’s Vin Diesel.

Epic
Parents, get ready for an epic disappointment. Though colourful and exciting enough for the kids, most of the celebrity cast phone in lacklustre voice performances, and the computer animation just isn’t spectacular enough to compensate. The story — about little forest people battling an evil corrupter of nature — ends up feeling like a low-rent FernGully (if you remember that one), without the environmental message. Funny guys Aziz Ansari and Jason Sudeikis stand out, and bring the only laughs for the over-10 crowd. Colin mcneil
••••• The first Hangover movie was a dark, hilarious look at a bachelor party gone horribly wrong. After an unfunny carbon-copy sequel the series ends with a heist film, sans the monkey and, unfortunately, most of the laughs. This time the Wolfpack are coerced by a gangster into tracking down Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong) and gold bricks worth $21 million. Part three is as vulgar as the first two, but the story is stuck in limbo somewhere between heist flick and comedy. richard crouse

Judging a book by its cover? Big sales
Movie tie-ins. A big screen adaptation of a novel can boost book sales, but does it influence our reading experience? Book lovers who haven’t yet read The Great Gatsby but hope to do so before seeing the new Baz Luhrmann film adaptation may still find themselves being influenced by the Hollywood machine. Like many novels that are adapted for the big screen, the 1925 F. Scott Fitzgerald literary classic has been reprinted with a movie tie-in cover featuring the stars — in this case, a tuxedo-clad Leonardo DiCaprio looming over his castmates in all their Roaring Twenties glamour. While movie tie-in books can drive sales of novels, they can also irk some readers who find their imaginations tainted by the cinematic interpretations depicted on the cover. “When you read the

What’s hot this summer The summer movie season has begun on theatre screens across the country. September will mark the beginning of Oscar season, but from now until August our minds are free to turn to sun-bleached mush — and occasionally take in brainier fare. Matt prigge
Metro World News in New York
This is the End What: The Apatow boys play “themselves” at a Hollywood party taking place during the apocalypse. Not to be confused with Edgar Wright’s forthcoming The World’s End, which is also a drunken comedy about the apocalypse. Why: Michael Cera and others get amusingly offed. Why not: The Apatow clan has been running a bit on fumes lately. A self-referential, valedictory romp after a string of bombs seems a bit desperate.
Much Ado About Nothing
The Bling Ring
What: Hot off directing the third highest grossing film ever (The Avengers), Joss Whedon turns to Shakespeare, the second greatest writer ever (after Stan Lee, of course), with some of his usuals (Nathan Fillion, Amy Acker) filling out the Bard’s comedy of errors.
What: Sofia Coppola returns with her version of a crime saga about girls, led by Emma Watson, who use the Internet to track celebrities’ whereabouts and rob their homes. Why: Sofia Coppola has her problems, but they’re often the same as her gifts. No one makes movies like her, which is to say that no one is making films about the insularity of privilege with the actual insight into the insularity of privilege. Why not: “Paris Hilton as herself.” Berberian Sound Studio What: Toby Jones plays a sound designer hired by questionable Italian producers to work on a “giallo” — sleazy Italian thriller film prevalent during the ’70s. Why: Director Peter Strickland ably captures the “giallo” mood .
Why: Even if everyone’s terrible, it’s still Much Ado About Nothing. Why not: Some of the cast are reportedly terrible. And even with Keanu Reeves, it would be hard to top Kenneth Branagh’s 1993 version. Is World War Z worth missing a summer night for? handout
Why not: This isn’t for everybody. Is that a negative? White House Down What: Remember that movie that just came out where 1600 Pennsylvania Ave was invaded? This is totally different. Why: Channing Tatum as a secret service agent. Why not: Roland Emmerich last made a movie about how Shakespeare didn’t write the works of Shakespeare.
Frances Ha What: Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) reunites with his Greenberg leading lady/It Girl Greta Gerwig for this low-budget, B&W ode to the French New Wave. Why: Baumbach is an acerbic genius and Gerwig is refining her unique, laid-back screen presence with every film, without becoming a stock ingenue. Why not: Baumbach needs to reunite with his Kicking and Screaming stars, including Chris Eigeman, Carlos Jacott and Josh Hamilton. Just because.

After Earth What: M. Why: Will Smith is a very good actor. Why not: You know what? M. Night Shyamalan is too easy to mock. Let’s hope he’s found a premise that will actually drive his creative juices, as with Signs — but without the garbage ending, as with Signs.

Sequels — or suck-quels — come in few flavours. Some — like Star Wars — continue a storyline; some — like Home Alone 2 — hit repeat. Others, like the James Bond and the Fast and the Furious films, help a franchise endure by adapting for the times and swapping out stars as they age or move on. Very few completely change course midstream. With The Hangover Part III not being about a hangover, we round up films that messed with the formula, and some failed.

Sudden Impact (1983)
There could have easily been endless nice films about Babe, the talking pig, on his farm with other talking animals. But the first sequel killed this prospect by taking our pig into a mega-metropolis and going dementedly creepy and wonderfully dark. Parents famously freaked, and the film tanked, but most kids would adore it.
When few were looking, Universal Soldier — a modest hit for Jean-Claude Van Damme back in 1992 — lived on as a direct-to-video mainstay about a cyborg fighter. Anyone who caught up with its sixth entry would have been shocked to find that it barely resembles the original. Now Van Damme is the bad guy and the star is some guy (Scott Adkins) on a routine revenge mission. Most different of all, this John Hyams film is very well-made and a lot of fun.
Deviated sequels
Clint Eastwood first embodied rebel cop “Dirty” Harry Callahan. The five-film series has mostly been helmed by genre directors of varying quality. For the fourth, Eastwood — a more laid-back and filmmaker — took over. The result is a slower film than the rest where Harry is unusually empathic with the murdering female character whom historically he would have gunned down. Regardless, it’s the series’ biggest grosser.
Babe: Pig in the City (1998)
Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012)
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
Evil Dead 3 - Army of Darkness (1992)
John Carpenter originally envisioned that his series would boast new villains in every film. But even though the first sequel brought back Michael Myers, the third adhered to this vision, thus confusing everyone when the baddie turned out to be 62-yearold Dan O’Herlihy, playing the owner of a Halloween costume manufacturer hell-bent on domination.
Evil Dead goes medieval! Bruce Campbell’s Ash, the survivor of The Evil Dead and its comic sequel/sortaremake, was suddenly whisked to the Middle Ages for no reason other than, “Wouldn’t that be kind of awesome if a gorefest series did that?”

Moore than a number: Would you ask the men these questions? Julianne Moore is getting tired of the double standard for women when it comes to getting older in Hollywood. “Men aren’t asked about age. Men aren’t asked about their children,” she tells DuJour magazine. “Not that these things aren’t important, but I do feel like it becomes reductive when a woman’s life becomes, ‘Talk to me about your kids and how you feel about plastic surgery.’” Still, Moore doesn’t want to sound like she’s complaining, as she’s thrilled to have had the

Kristen Stewart
Stewart wasn’t so Swift to seek out Taylor’s sympathy OK, so maybe Kristen Stewart didn’t seek breakup advice from Taylor Swift after all. Despite reports earlier this week, sources insist to E! News that the Twilight actress did not in fact hightail
it to Swift’s Beverly Hills home in the wake of her split from Robert Pattinson. “They know each other and they are friends, but they didn’t see each other,” a source says of the young women.
Amanda Bynes
Bynes boils over allegedly altered photos Amanda Bynes is not happy with how In Touch Weekly has been portraying her, and who can blame her when the cover story on her gets a “Destroyed by fame” headline? But that’s not why Bynes is up in arms. The magazine apparently used “fake altered photos” with the story “because they f—ing hate me,” Bynes explained on Twitter. (The magazine also claimed

to have photos taken inside Bynes’ New York City apartment.) “They used an old shot of me on the cover with a bad angle of my old nose before I had surgery to reshape my profile and to remove the webbing from my eyes,” Bynes tweeted. “I have to sue because that’s not my apartment, those aren’t my clothes!”
My first name ain’t Baby, it’s Billionaire Janet Jackson isn’t doing too bad for herself: After several decades in the entertainment industry, the singer and actress has reportedly hit billionaire status, according to Variety.
Jackson’s income has included $458 million for concert tours, $260 million from album sales and $304 million for film and TV work, plus more than $81 million from sponsorship deals. With the new income milestone, Jackson joins an elite club that also includes her husband, Wissam Al Mana, who became a billionaire thanks to investments in the Middle East.

Santa-Barbara-based food and garden blogger Valerie Rice (Eat Drink Garden) uses lentils as the base for her taco, simmering them with tomato, garlic, red pepper, and a dash each of cumin and smoked paprika. The lentils get packaged in a soft corn tortilla and topped with items such as roasted tomatillo salsa and guacamole. “My first goround with these I wasn’t sure how it would go over with my meat-loving husband and sometimes picky daughters,” Rice wrote in an email. “But they were a total hit and now are part of our dinnertime rotation.”
Toss shredded chicken in a sauce of pomegranate molasses, lime juice and honey. Stuff the meat into a taco shell (or wrap it in a flour tortilla or even Middle Eastern flatbread) and top with yogurt, fresh basil, mint, scallions, tomato, cucumber and plenty of sumac. “This is a classic combination of Persian ingredients,” Louisa Shafia, author of The New Persian Kitchen, wrote in an email. “Crushed purple sumac berries are tart and salty and a must have for conjuring the authentic flavour of Middle Eastern cuisine.”
Stick a pork tenderloin in the slow cooker until it practically melts, suggests Marie Simmons, author of the new cookbook, Taste of Honey. Shred the meat, then toss it with a sweetspicy barbecue sauce made by simmering honey, chipotle peppers packed in adobo sauce, ketchup, soy sauce, cumin, chili powder, garlic and a swig of cider vinegar for about 10 minutes, or until thick. Top the taco with avocado, thinly sliced radishes and a shredded jicama-and-carrot slaw dressed with chopped cilantro and lime juice.
Season a flat-iron steak with salt and pepper, then sear it on the grill, suggests Washington, D.C. chef Spike Mendelsohn, who plans to open a steak frites restaurant called Bearnaise this summer. Wrap thin slices of the steak and pickled red onions inside a soft corn taco and serve with warm bearnaise sauce for dipping. “I love the idea of eating a steak without sharpening my knives,” Mendelsohn said via email. I never thought I’d see the day when calorie-counting would be the latest wine trend. After all, the bellyexpanding issue with booze comes from its sugar and alcohol. Wines tend to have low quantities of both, with the average white or red containing about 140 calories per five ounce glass. I guess when you’re watching your weight even that can equal lots of squats. Who came to the rescue? Why, a former real housewife of New York City. Bethenny Frankel, reality star and business mogul, started her Skinnygirl line of adult beverages so she could enjoy a guilt-free Margarita. After her company sold for bags of dough, the concept was unleashed on wine lovers. At 100 calories per five ounce serving, the Skinnygirl 2011 California Red ($14.99) hasn’t downplayed the alcohol (a respectable 12 per cent) in its freshly crushed blackberry fruit flavour that ends with a bright, juicy finish. While it’s a chillable red that will match with most summertime menus, the skinny on this girl is that she may taste best all by herself. PRICES REFLECT THE RANGE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. It features comfort food and, just like its big brother, is inspired by Canada’s seasons and culture. On Stage: The Band Before Time The Band Before Time, according to their Facebook page, has been facilitating inebriated good times through their love, party jams and sarcastic shenanigans for a long while. These five childhood companions have always been chalkfull of music, and Friday night they’re going to let it all hang out at Michael’s Bar. Alongside Floodland, Banded Stilts, E.B. Anderson & The Resolutes, and Pat Bethune, the evening should kick off at 9 p.m. and bring in Saturday still rocking.
Don’t be late for the bus The Young Thrillionaires, in conjunction with The Bus Stop Theatre and CKDU 88.1FM Go Time!, are proud to present The Late Bus. MacKinnon making a Memorial Cup statement

Leaving a lasting impression. Former NHLer-turned-scout says Mooseheads star much more than a sniper ANDREW RANKIN

Basil MacRae is impressed with a lot more about Nathan MacKinnon than just his Memorial Cup-leading eight points. The former NHL tough guy turned Columbus Blue Jackets scout admits he’s witnessed a very rare talent in the Halifax Mooseheads forward. “When he’s on the ice, he’s always noticeable,” said MacRae of the Cole Harbour hockey product. “It’s not that it’s always a highlight-reel play. He blocks shots. He’s great at faceoffs. For me he’s a 17-year-old kid who looks like he’s 22 or 23 years old — he’s very mature and is beyond his years.” So far, MacKinnon has answered all of his critics with his all-around performance at the Memorial Cup, emerging as the Herd’s biggest leader at the tournament. But MacKinnon insists he didn’t come into the fourteam event putting specific expectations on himself. “What I wanted to do is bring my game and be the best I could possibly be, and I figured that would produce results by just playing
my hardest and sticking to my strengths,” said the projected No. 2 pick in June’s NHL draft. “If I came here trying to prove that I’m the first pick, or trying to lead the tournament or score 100 goals, I don’t think I’d be doing well right now. I’m just trying to keep it simple. So far so good.” MacKinnon rose to the occasion in the Mooseheads’ 7-4 round-robin victory against the projected No. 1 pick Seth Jones and the Portland Winterhawks, finishing with three goals and an assist. Although MacKinnon outduelled Jones, MacRae resisted reading too much into it. “They’re just two totally different players,” he said. “Both are going to be great NHL players. It always takes a little longer for bigger defencemen to develop to take to know the game.” And, while both players gun for a title, MacRae’s hoping they can remain in the moment. “Enjoy the journey and the ride; when you’re drafted you’re no longer a kid, you’re a man.” Quoted
“Yes, he’s a heck of a talent, a heck of a player. I never met the kid but he seems like he’d be a great kid, too.” Former NHLer and Columbus Blue Jackets scout Basil MacRae of Nathan MacKinnon

Finding that work-play balance Memorial Cup. Herd looking to keep their emotions in check while waiting for Sunday’s championship Andrew rankin
Metro in Saskatoon
Who could blame the Halifax Mooseheads if they chose to spend Thursday night obsessing over the Memorial Cup final? As the tournament’s top team during the round-robin, the Herd earns a spot in Sunday’s matchup and is also rewarded with three long days off to consider the prospects of junior hockey supremacy.
But after Thursday’s team skate, the No. 1-ranked team in the country just wanted to forget about hockey for the day. What better way than a team outing to the movies to take in the ridiculously outlandish The Hangover Part III? As the Herd counts down to the big day, players are looking to strike that perfect balance of work and play to ensure they enter Sunday’s game relaxed and supremely focused. “It’s winner take all,” said Mooseheads forward Darcy Ashley. “We talked about it amongst ourselves a little bit and we want to leave everything on the ice. The worst thing you can ever have is regret.” Having two Memorial Cup appearances under his belt,

“It’s going to be my last game as a Moosehead and right now I’m just trying to enjoy the moment.” Mooseheads forward Stephen MacAulay
Mooseheads veteran forward Stephen MacAulay has seen it all. “There’s a lot of pressure but at the end of the day you just have to keep reminding yourself that it’s just a game,” MacAulay said. “We don’t want to downplay it. We just want to try to be relaxed and enjoy the moment. Hangover III might help, maybe.” In his last year of junior eligibility with the team, MacAulay will play his last game as a Moosehead on Sunday. The popular veteran knows how lucky he is, but the Cole Harbour native is hungry for more. “To go out on a stage like this would be phenomenal.” As the big day draws closer and the pressure mounts, MacAulay will remain the steadfast rock he’s been for the Herd since joining the team mid-season. “I’m just trying to be a calming presence,” he said. “I don’t want to be too over the top but any way I can help, I’ll try.”

Bo Horvat scored on a shorthanded penalty shot in the first period and Jake Patterson made 32 saves on Thursday as the London Knights defeated the host Saskatoon Blades 6-1 in the tiebreaker game at the MasterCard Memorial Cup. London now takes on the Portland Winterhawks in Friday’s semifinal. The winner of the Portland-London game earns a berth in Sunday’s title game against the Halifax Moose-
heads. Chris Tierney, with a goal and an assist, Seth Griffith, Ryan Rupert, Kyle Platzer and Nikita Zadorov had the other goals for the OHL champions. Alex Broadhurst added two assists, while Horvat chipped in with one of his own. Patterson, who was pulled after allowing five goals in the first period of Tuesday’s 9-2 round-robin loss to Halifax, was rarely tested by a sluggish Blades team.
Nathan Burns scored for Saskatoon, which got 31 saves from Andrey Makarov before being replaced by Alex Moodie after the sixth London goal. Leading 1-0 after Horvat’s goal, the Knights pulled away with two quick strikes during a 49-second span in the second. Griffith walked around Saskatoon’s Collin Valcourt on a power play and roofed a shot past Makarov at 11:28 before Max Domi fed Tierney for a one-timer at
12:17. The Knights then put the game to bed early in the third. Rupert scored on a feed from in close from Tierney at 2:16, Platzer made it 5-0 just 37 seconds later and Zadorov stretched the lead to six at 3:22. Burns broke Patterson’s shutout bid on a nice backhand move at 11:20 for Saskatoon’s only highlight on a dismal night for the hosts. The Canadian press

UFC 160. Cole Harbour fighter gearing up for the biggest MMA fight of his career
Gray Maynard Record: 12-1-1

T.J. Grant knows this isn’t just another fight. A win on Saturday night at UFC 160 against the talented Gray Maynard, and Grant gets a shot at Benson Henderson’s lightweight title. It’s a position he’s never been in before, and it’s one most MMA fighters can only dream about. Still, with so much riding on this fight, Grant is doing his best to not look too far ahead. He’s preparing for a 15-minute war against Maynard before a sold-out crowd at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, and is ready to do whatever it takes to get his arm raised in victory. “I got a job to do and it’s the only way I’m treating it right now,” said the 29-yearold Grant, prior to leaving for Las Vegas earlier this week. “I know what the boss said and what’s at stake, but at the same time, I’m just thinking about what I have to do to go out there and win this fight. I’m not really thinking ahead.” The boss — UFC president Dana White — announced last month that the winner

of the Grant-Maynard fight would get a shot at the lightweight title. It has made what was already Grant’s biggest fight to date even bigger. The bout will mark the first time Grant has appeared on a UFC pay-
per-view, as he will be the second bout of a card that gets underway at 11 p.m. Grant is calling his fight against Maynard “the toughest test of my career.” “I’m definitely not going to take this lightly,” he said.
“That’s all the motivation I need to go in and fight Gray Maynard. He’s going after what I want. I want to forward my career and this is the next step.” Grant couldn’t go into a fight with much more con-
fidence than he has now. He’s on a four-fight winning streak since moving to lightweight, including a January TKO victory over Matt Wiman. Since then, he’s been training for Maynard, a fight-
er nicknamed The Bully who is known for his wrestling, striking and conditioning. “I’ve had a lot of experience now in the UFC and just fighting overall,” said Grant. “I feel like I’m starting to put it all together.”

Kingston shoots 66 for the lead
Patrick Roy has been hired as coach of the Colorado Avalanche. The team said Thursday it has reached an agreement in principle with the Hall of Fame goaltender to take over as coach and vice-president of hockey operations. “This is an unbelievable day for me,” Roy told the team’s website.
Edwin Encarnacion hit Toronto’s first grand slam of the season and J.P. Arencibia added a two-run homer as the Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 12-6 on Thursday. Encarnacion’s slam into the left-field foul net off Pedro Strop followed three straight walks in the sixth inning. He was matched by Arencibia with four RBIs each. The Canadian Press

Rangers live to play another day NHL playoffs. Kreider nets overtime winner but New York still trails Boston 3-1 in series Chris Kreider proudly wore the Broadway Hat in the victorious New York Rangers dressing room as he tried to describe the feeling of saving his team’s season. Kreider deftly steered in a pass from Rick Nash 7:03 into overtime, and the Rangers stayed alive in the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. “It is so surreal,” the 22-year-old Kreider said. “It’s not something that can really be explained. It is something that just has to be felt, but it
was awesome. I’m just excited to give these guys an opportunity to play another game. “There is no quit in this room.” New York, which erased 2-0 and 3-2 deficits, still trails the Eastern Conference semifinal series 3-1. The Rangers will need to win again on Saturday in Boston to force Game 6 back in Madison Square Garden. Derek Stepan and Brian Boyle scored tying goals in the third period for the Rangers, who even found success on the power play. Carl Hagelin netted New York’s first goal of the game in the second period. Boston got second-period goals from Nathan Horton and rising star Torey Krug to build an early lead. Tyler Seguin’s first of the playoffs put the Bruins back on top 3-2 in the third. The Associated Press

Horoscopes
Aries
March 21 - April 20 Why are you making a simple situation so difficult? Whatever the reason, you need to realize that, at the moment, you are your own worst enemy. Try looking at life from a more positive perspective today.
Taurus
April 21 - May 21 Before you make an important decision, make sure you have covered all the angles and not left any loose ends that might trip you up. The devil, as always, is in the details.
Gemini
May 22 - June 21 Your larger-than-life personality will get a boost from today’s Venus-Mercury link in your sign. Someone who was hoping you might take a lower profile will be disappointed.
Cancer
June 22 - July 23 If someone seems to be taking too much of an interest in your private affairs, you must tell them to get lost. You may have to say it more than once, and louder than you would like, before they get the message.
Leo
July 24 - Aug. 23 You are not the first person to walk a certain path, so why not make your journey easier by following in the footsteps of those who have been there and done it before you?
Virgo
Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 At some stage today, it will be obvious that going it alone is not an option. You need the help of people whose talents in certain areas are superior to your own. Success is mainly about co-operation.
Libra
Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 You will indulge even more so than usual over the next 24 hours. The good things in life are there to be enjoyed and you have every intention of getting your share — and then some.
Scorpio
Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 It may feel as if the pressure is building and because of the approaching eclipse you won’t be as self-assured as you usually are, but there is no need to panic. It will all turn out right in the end.
Sagittarius
Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 Are you taking someone for granted? According to the planets you are and what happens today will remind you how much you owe them emotionally. Make an effort to remind them you care.
Capricorn
Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 You need to keep your wishful thinking under control. Even though you are down-to-earth by nature, you do enjoy your flights of fancy. Just make sure you don’t fly too high.
Aquarius
Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 Today’s Venus-Mercury link in the most creative area of your chart urges you to do something of an artistic nature. What is it you enjoy doing more than anything else? Make time for it in your schedule.
Pisces
Feb. 20 - March 20 If you want something, you will find a way to get it — even if you know it is wrong. That’s your choice to make, but what might it do to people you love? Think carefully. SALLY BROMPTON
