Health Minister Dave Wilson says he is troubled by the possibility of a strike by the province’s 800 paramedics on Saturday but is optimistic a resolution can be reached before then. “I’m extremely concerned about the impact a potential strike from paramedics will have on Nova Scotians,” Wilson said Thursday. Wilson, himself a former paramedic, said he is hopeful that the union that represents the paramedics and their employer can come to an agreement to avert a strike now that a mediator has been appointed. Meteorologists say it’s too soon to know precisely what the impact of the first named tropical storm of the season will be on Nova Scotia, but it will likely

take the form of rain. Tropical storm Andrea had top sustained winds of 120 km/h on Thursday afternoon, sitting just west of Florida and moving northeast at 27 km/h. A spokeswoman for Nova Scotia’s Public Prosecution Service says the case of former provincial cabinet minister Percy Paris, who is charged with assault and uttering threats, is scheduled in court on Friday. The 65-year-old Paris resigned as minister of economic and rural development last month after saying he lost his composure during an incident outside a washroom in the legislature. Police laid the charges after Liberal member Keith Colwell alleged he was assaulted by the New Democrat politician.

Switch Open Streets won’t be closing any roads on Sunday — just putting them to better use. Ross Soward, Switch organizer and community planner, said there isn’t much traffic on the weekends in Halifax so bringing thousands of people onto the streets — instead of vehicles — is a better use of infrastructure. “As opposed to being a road closure, we like to see it as sort of a road opening, but for people as opposed to vehicles,” Soward said about the second annual event. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, two kilometres of roadway will be closed to vehicles to allow people to walk, skateboard, bike or run from North and Agricola Street down North Park, Bell Road, to finish up at Spring Garden.

The first Switch event in September brought close to 4,000 people out to explore Halifax neighbourhoods at a slower pace, and Soward is hoping for a similar turnout. “The idea has always been for it to be more than a oneoff type event ... where it happens on regular basis and becomes much more integrated into the regular routine of how people interact with the city,” Soward said. “Like the first Sunday of the summer months, Switch is just kind of a no-brainer.” Like the last Switch event, Soward said organizers left programming open to the community to allow for spontaneous events like a DJ spinning music in the street, or

Dog park assault

Halifax police seeking suspect Halifax police say a man was punched in the face trying to break up a dog fight in Shubie Park. The alleged assault happened on May 28 just before 7 p.m. Police say they were called to an offleash area of the popular Dartmouth park near Locks Road after the 30-year-old victim was punched by another dog owner when their two animals started fighting. Police say the suspect fled on a mountain bike after punching the victim, who wasn’t injured. The suspect is described as a man in his 40s, about six-foot-three, bald and with a thin build. He was driving a dark-coloured mountain bike and his dog was an American pit bull. Police are notifying the public about it now in response to a follow-up inquiry from another Shubie Park user via the Halifax Regional Police Facebook page. philip croucher/metro

collection thanks to a Toronto family’s donation. “Annie is sort of the person who’s taken the portrait of the baby-boom generation,” said gallery director Ray Cronin during an announcement Thursday. “Since pop-art we sort of have lived in a culture of fame and celebrity, and I don’t think anybody has depicted that better since Andy Warhol.” Cronin said the 2,000 photos in the collection are from Leibovitz’s books, published since 1983, and were donated by the children of Al and Faye Mintz. The gallery director said the collection is unique because of the large size of the prints. The photos of Belushi and Lennon are the smallest, at 38 by 38 inches. The largest print is 38 inches by 16 feet. Leibovitz wanted her photos to go to a gallery with a commitment to education and

The pair had married last September, a few weeks after they met one another. Four days after their wedding, Weeks, 75, was taken to hospital after losing consciousness while they were staying at a bed and breakfast in Sydney. The marriage was later ruled invalid by the province’s Vital Statistics division after it said false information was provided on the marriage certificate.

We think it works so well we want others to know they can do it too,” explained Mary Pyche, program leader with Capital Health’s Mental Health Mobile Crisis Team, after a presentation at the National Mental Health Police Liaison Roundtable. Pyche and her colleagues gave detailed presentations on both the Follow-Up Next Day Service, or FUNDS program, and the recent provincial expansion of the Mental Health Mobile Crisis Team (MHMCT).

Victoria Paul. Third review concludes evidence doesn’t support charges A third review into the death of Victoria Paul has determined the medical evidence doesn’t support laying charges. Truro Police Service Chief David MacNeil said in late February that the department was sending the incident, in which the 44-year-old Indian Brook woman died following a period of incarceration at the Truro Police Service, to the Public Prosecution Service for a review. “The findings are there with all three reports, so hopefully this brings some closure to the Paul family,” said MacNeil. Paul was arrested on Aug. 28, 2009, for public drunkenness and was taken to hospital the day after being arrested. She had suffered a stroke. Her family made the decision to take her off life support and she died on Sept. 5. Following a review by Halifax Regional Police, Justice Minister Ross Landry ordered an independent review, which indicated police didn’t properly monitor Paul’s health while in custody.

New bill tabled by feds adds more criteria for injection sites The federal government has introduced tough new rules for supervised drug-injection sites, in a move some see as an effort to deter such facilities. The government says it’s a response to a Supreme Court of Canada ruling that ordered the Conservatives to keep a Vancouver clinic open against their will. But NDP health critic Libby Davies said the government is effectively blocking any chance of setting up a new clinic. The new legislation would require advocates of new clinics to meet two dozen specific criteria before they can apply to open a new clinic. Among other things, they would have to canvass community opinion and gain the support of provincial and municipal authorities. The health minister would then make the final decision. Searching for laughs The Internship. Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn fail to rekindle that Wedding Crashers magic in this poor man’s version of Revenge of the Nerds Richard: Mark, this is the funniest infomercial I’ve ever seen. As a comedy movie it doesn’t rate that high, but as an advertisement for Google it’s a knee slapper. I’ve seen product placement in movies before, but this is something else. By the time Rose Byrnes’ character says, “I believe what we do here makes people’s lives better,” I was ready to worship at the

Church of the Sacred Search Engine. We also learn that Google is ranked as the best place to work in America. That’s all great, but I was hoping for more laughs with my infomercial. What did you think? Mark: Ugh! The shameless corporate tie-in made me want to take a shower. And it opens up the door for less savoury companies to do the same thing: can Monsanto: The Movie be far behind? It’s too bad, because the leads are great, and it’s a great premise — but I didn’t laugh once. It could have been a version of Animal House set at a business behemoth, but comes off as a bad Revenge of the Nerds. The idea would make a

great reality series, but the movie flops and feels engineered from the first frame onwards. RC: I’m not so sure I thought the leads were great. There are some laughs in The Internship. Unfortunately, very few of them are generated by Vaughn and Wilson. The chemistry that made Wedding Crashers such a big hit eight years ago is still in place, but the material isn’t. They still banter a blue streak but it feels tired and old, like many of the jokes. The two luddites at a tech mecca should have been workable, but it often feels like laughing at grandpa because he can’t figure out how to work the remote.

MB: I meant the leads are great, but not in this movie! Everything seems laboured, underscored, and over directed. These two guys may preach the value of eccentricity in the workplace, but the script defies their goal at every turn. It’s a very conventional movie that’s even a little smarmy at times. The old Vince Vaughn would have made fun of the sentimentality that crowds any good moments out of the picture. And Wilson’s role is just too vaporous to register. RC: Perhaps next time the screenwriters can Google some better jokes. MB: I say Yahoo! to that.

This slow moving Mississippi river-set movie features infidelity, murder and theft, but at its heart it isn’t really about any of those things. Not really. Instead it’s a story about the things we do for love. When two 14-year-old boys discover a mysterious stranger named Mud (Matthew McConaughey) living on a remote island, they get drawn into a possibly illegal scheme to reunite the loner with his true love Juniper (Reese Witherspoon). Methodical and moody, the film takes its time telling the story, but the performances are stellar and quietly effective.

To call The Purge cooked-up is an injustice to baked goods. A dystopian futuristic thriller about a family enduring an annual 12-hour government-backed event whereby crimes of any sort are legal (somehow this curbs violence the other 364 days of the calendar?) is as contrived and callous as cinema gets. If the filmmaker’s aim was to create a moral allegory akin to A Clockwork Orange, he didn’t even come within an eyelash.

There’s not much ‘Buzz’ in space: Aldrin While astronaut Buzz Aldrin enjoys movies about space, he doesn’t always think they get it right. His main point of contention after seeing After Earth: “There was a lot of noise. In space, you don’t get that much noise.” Aldrin, who followed Neil Armstrong onto the surface of the moon during the historic Apollo 11 landing in 1969, says that “noise doesn’t propagate in a vacuum. We talked over headsets.” Aldrin enjoyed the father-son dynamic between Will Smith and son Jaden, but thought there was a little too much “shoot’em-up” for his taste. “I hope the aliens are more peaceful than they are in this film, wherever they are,” Aldrin joked. the associated press

Former Alexisonfire frontman Dallas Green talks about his depression after leaving band he helped form Two years ago, Little Hell granted City and Colour’s Dallas Green his greatest success yet — platinum sales, his first chart-topping album and eventually, a Juno Award for songwriter of the year. So naturally, as he toured his most popular record yet, he was miserable. That Green was blue had nothing to do with Little Hell, which he liked, but instead a heavy secret he’d been toting: the 32-year-old had already decided to depart the beloved post-hardcore band he’d helped to found more than a decade earlier, Alexisonfire, but news wouldn’t reach the public until months later.

A great way to make your own healthier pizzas is to use thin flour tortillas or pita bread rather than the thick pizza dough that has more calories than nutrients! Use whatever vegetables and cheese you like.

1. Preheat the oven to

400 F. Place pita bread or tortillas on pizza metal or ceramic dish.

2. Divide the tomato sauce among the breads, ensuring to spread evenly. Ingredients • 4 flour small tortillas or pita breads (preferably whole wheat) • 3/4 cup tomato pasta sauce • 8 small mushrooms, thinly sliced • 1/4 cup diced sweet red or green pepper • 1 tbsp chopped fresh basil • 1/2 tsp dried oregano • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese • 1/4 cup chopped feta cheese (optional)

Cam Russell isn’t planning a blockbuster deal, but he admits anything could happen on draft weekend. Confident he’ll ice a solid squad next season, the Halifax Mooseheads’ general manager is going into Friday’s trade window and QMJHL draft day on Saturday in Chicoutimi, Que., feeling relaxed and excited. But given the inherent unpredictably of the event, there’s always potential for fireworks. “I find that a lot of that happens as you go; you don’t always go in with a plan of doing that, or you can go in with a plan of doing that, but it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen,” said Russell. “Right now we’re not looking at making a big blockbuster trade but anything can happen on the draft floor.” Russell is confident in the existing depth on the Mooseheads’ roster, even if it doesn’t include the team’s top line of Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin and Marty Frk, who all have a realistic shot of playing pro next year. Russell won’t have the luxury of a first-round pick, but with two second-round selections (34th and 38th overall), the Mooseheads should net a couple of talented impact players. Nova Scotians could serve as dark horses Maybe Saturday’s QMJHL draft doesn’t boast a bonanza of top-level Nova Scotian talent, but there are a few up-and-comers worth watching out for. Based on the league’s Central Scouting Service, no Nova Scotian is a projected first-rounder, but three Haligonians are expected to be

selected in the following, second round. Topping the trio, in the 25th spot, is Cameron Lee, a defenceman who suited up for Northwood prep school in New York. Halifax Titans teammates Nicholas Welsh and Campbell Pickard are listed just behind Lee, in the 27th and 30th slots.

Halifax Mooseheads general manager Cam Russell said he’d love to have all kinds of players from Nova Scotia and its capital, but not at the expense of talent. “Everybody wants to have hometown kids on their roster, that doesn’t mean that you’re not going to take the best player that’s available,”
