The government named John Clarke, a St. John’s arbitrator and lawyer, to mediate the contract talks between the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 727, and Emergency Medical Care Inc. The union has said that outstanding issues include wages and a demand for definedbenefit pensions. It has also expressed its desire for a standard three-year deal instead of a five-year contract as suggested by the employer. Emergency Medical Care has said it is committed to reaching an agreement and will leave discussion of the union’s demands at the bargaining table. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Health Minister Dave Wilson says he is troubled by the possibility of a strike by the province’s 800 paramedics on Saturday but is optimistic a resolution can be reached before then. “I’m extremely concerned about the impact a potential strike from paramedics will have on Nova Scotians,” Wilson said Thursday. Wilson, himself a former paramedic, said he is hopeful that the union that represents the paramedics and their employer can come to an agreement to avert a strike now that a mediator has been appointed. He said the provincial government has contingency plans in place with Nova Scotia’s district health authorities, though he did not elaborate on

Trade deal?

Euro economic problems keep me up at night: Flaherty With rumours that a trade deal may be close between Canada and the European Union, federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty told an audience in Halifax that he remains worried about the economy in the world’s largest market. Speaking following a dinner hosted by the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies, Flaherty says the European economy is still in recession and doesn’t look like it’s about to “leap out.” He says he has kept his eye on serious housing bubbles in Ireland and Spain and says Canada has taken its own steps to avoid a similar problem. Meteorologists say it’s too soon to know precisely what the impact of the first named tropical storm of the season will be on Nova Scotia, but it will likely

take the form of rain. Tropical storm Andrea had top sustained winds of 120 km/h on Thursday afternoon, sitting just west of Florida and moving northeast at 27 km/h. Paula Sutherland of the Canadian Hurricane Centre said it’s expected to track near or over Nova Scotia on Saturday. “We are looking at it becoming more of a rainfall event for us,” she said. “There’s still some uncertainty right now with the specific track of the system and how much rain or the weather conditions asso-

ciated with this.” Andrea is the forerunner of what’s expected to be an active or very active hurricane season in the North Atlantic ocean. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting a 70 per cent likelihood of 13 to 20 named storms, of which seven to 11

could become hurricanes — including three to six major hurricanes. The seasonal average is 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes. June 1 is considered the official start of the hurricane season, and Sutherland said it’s a little unusual to see a named storm headed for Atlantic Canada so soon. “It is not unheard of that we have storms coming up and affecting us this early, but it isn’t the norm,” she said. Hurricane season runs through the end of November.

A spokeswoman for Nova Scotia’s Public Prosecution Service says the case of former provincial cabinet minister Percy Paris, who is charged with assault and uttering threats, is scheduled in court on Friday. The 65-year-old Paris resigned as minister of economic and rural development last month after saying he lost his composure during an incident outside a washroom in the legislature. Police laid the charges after Liberal member Keith Colwell alleged he was assaulted by the New Democrat politician.

Where the streets have no cars Switch. People, not vehicles, welcome haley ryan

haley.ryan@metronews.ca

Switch Open Streets won’t be closing any roads on Sunday — just putting them to better use. Ross Soward, Switch organizer and community planner, said there isn’t much traffic on the weekends in Halifax so bringing thousands of people onto the streets — instead of vehicles — is a better use of infrastructure. “As opposed to being a road closure, we like to see it as sort of a road opening, but for people as opposed to vehicles,” Soward said about the second annual event. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, two kilometres of roadway will be closed to vehicles to allow people to walk, skateboard, bike or run from North and Agricola Street down North Park, Bell Road, to finish up at Spring Garden.

“At the end of the day, streets are public space, and so it’s kind of getting people to think a little bit differently about that.” Ross Soward, Switch organizer

The first Switch event in September brought close to 4,000 people out to explore Halifax neighbourhoods at a slower pace, and Soward is hoping for a similar turnout. “The idea has always been for it to be more than a oneoff type event ... where it happens on regular basis and becomes much more integrated into the regular routine of how people interact with the city,” Soward said. “Like the first Sunday of the summer months, Switch is just kind of a no-brainer.” Like the last Switch event, Soward said organizers left programming open to the community to allow for spontaneous events like a DJ spinning music in the street, or

a zumba class on the North Common. “We kind of create this canvas and the community comes out and kind of paints it,” said Soward of the different yoga,

biking and dancing events. Free bike rentals and tuneups are also available at Victoria Park, and bicycle track demonstrations are going on at University Avenue as part

of Switch’s partnership with Bike Week. Soward said more Open Street events will be held in Dartmouth in August and Halifax in September.

Dog park assault

Halifax police seeking suspect Halifax police say a man was punched in the face trying to break up a dog fight in Shubie Park. The alleged assault happened on May 28 just before 7 p.m. Police say they were called to an offleash area of the popular Dartmouth park near Locks Road after the 30-year-old victim was punched by another dog owner when their two animals started fighting. Police say the suspect fled on a mountain bike after punching the victim, who wasn’t injured. The suspect is described as a man in his 40s, about six-foot-three, bald and with a thin build. He was driving a dark-coloured mountain bike and his dog was an American pit bull. Police are notifying the public about it now in response to a follow-up inquiry from another Shubie Park user via the Halifax Regional Police Facebook page. philip croucher/metro

The gallery director said the collection is unique because of the large size of the prints. The photos of Belushi and Lennon are the smallest, at 38 by 38 inches. The largest print is 38 inches by 16 feet. Leibovitz wanted her photos to go to a gallery with a commitment to education and

‘Black widow’ victim not caught up in witch hunt Melissa Anne Shepard. Fred Weeks relaxed and confident justice will be served despite suffering increased memory loss since alleged drugging incident last year A New Glasgow man who was allegedly drugged by a woman dubbed the “Black Widow” says he holds no ill will towards the accused, despite growing instances of memory loss since the incident last year. Melissa Ann Shepard, 78,

is scheduled to appear Monday for a judge-only trial at the Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Sydney on charges of attempted murder and administering a noxious substance to Fred Weeks. The pair had married last September, a few weeks after they met one another. Four days after their wedding, Weeks, 75, was taken to hospital after losing consciousness while they were staying at a bed and breakfast in Sydney. The marriage was later ruled invalid by the province’s Vital Statistics division after it said false information was provided on the marriage certificate.

“A lot of people think I’m right bitter because I almost died. Well, almost doesn’t count. Not to me anyway.” Fred Weeks.

Weeks said he is looking forward to the trial. “People want her hung up from a tree and cut to pieces,” he said. “I’m just very glad to get it over with and have it come to an end. I’m not worried about what she gets. Whatever she gets is what the judge will

give her and that’s what she deserves.” Weeks said he experienced memory lapses prior to the alleged incident, during which he was hospitalized with high levels of benzodiazepine, a tranquilizer. But he said his memory has deteriorated to the point where he forgets appointments and where he places things. “I can’t remember like I used to,” he said. Shepard acquired the “Black Widow” moniker due to her criminal record, which includes manslaughter and theft, linked to relationships with other men she met in Canada and the United States. Mental-health and crisis-management professionals from across Canada got a little show and tell about two successful Halifax-based programs during a national conference Thursday. “We believe in what we’re doing. We think it works so well we want others to know they can do it too,” explained Mary Pyche, program leader with Capital Health’s Mental Health Mobile Crisis Team, after a presentation at the National Mental Health Police Liaison Roundtable. Pyche and her colleagues gave detailed presentations on both the Follow-Up Next Day Service, or FUNDS program, and the recent provincial expansion of the Mental Health Mobile Crisis Team (MHMCT).

Victoria Paul. Third review concludes evidence doesn’t support charges A third review into the death of Victoria Paul has determined the medical evidence doesn’t support laying charges. Truro Police Service Chief David MacNeil said in late February that the department was sending the incident, in which the 44-year-old Indian Brook woman died following a period of incarceration at the Truro Police Service, to the Public Prosecution Service for a review. “The findings are there with all three reports, so hopefully this brings some closure to the Paul family,” said MacNeil. Paul was arrested on Aug. 28, 2009, for public drunkenness and was taken to hospital the day after being arrested. She had suffered a stroke. Her family made the decision to take her off life support and she died on Sept. 5. Following a review by Halifax Regional Police, Justice Minister Ross Landry ordered an independent review, which indicated police didn’t properly monitor Paul’s health while in custody.

While she hasn’t yet received the report of the Public Prosecution Service, Cheryl Maloney, the president of the Nova Scotia Native Women’s Association, said the association is “disappointed but not surprised” by the findings. “Where we have exhausted all avenues for Victoria’s case, we can only pray that this is not going to be the standard of care for Aboriginal people in the justice system or the standard of care for Aboriginal women in particular,” she said. truro daily news

French left-wing activist killed during fight with neo-Nazis A group of neo-Nazis beat a French far-left activist to death in the heart of Paris’ shopping district, officials said Thursday, in an attack that raised fears of increased far-right violence. Political tensions are high in France after months of protests against legalizing gay marriage that sometimes ended with troublemakers from the extreme right clashing with police. Interior Minister Manuel Valls said a fight broke out Wednesday evening between two groups of young people in a pedestrian street just steps away from the famous Printemps department store. Miss World pageant covers up this year Indonesia. Pageant contestants will have to opt for more conservative sarongs instead of bikinis Miss World has axed the famed bikinis from this year’s pageant in Indonesia, replacing the skimpy swim-

suits with conservative beach sarongs amid mounting protests from hardline Muslim groups, organizers said Thursday. All of the more than 130 contestants will be required to wear Bali’s traditional long sarongs instead of the sexy bikinis that are historically part of the competition, said Adjie S. Soeratmadjie of the RCTI, the official broadcaster and

local organizer. Parts of the pageant will take place on the resort island of Bali and the final round will be held Sept. 28 near the capital, Jakarta. Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim country. “There will be no bikini in this year’s Miss World pageant to respect our traditional customs and values,” Soeratmadjie said, adding that

the London-based Miss World Organization is on board with the decision. “This is a sensitive issue in Indonesia. We have discussed it since last year and they have agreed,” he said. The chairwoman of the Miss World Organization, Julia Morley, confirmed that none of the 137 contestants would wear a bikini. the associated press

Tighter rules. New bill tabled by feds adds more criteria for injection sites The federal government has introduced tough new rules for supervised drug-injection sites, in a move some see as an effort to deter such facilities. The government says it’s a response to a Supreme Court of Canada ruling that ordered the Conservatives to keep a Vancouver clinic open against their will. But NDP health critic Libby Davies said the government is effectively blocking any chance of setting up a new clinic. The new legislation would require advocates of new clinics to meet two dozen specific criteria before they can apply to open a new clinic. Among other things, they would have to canvass community opinion and gain the support of provincial and municipal authorities. The health minister would then make the final decision. As Health Minister Leona

Aglukkaq tabled her bill on Thursday, she made it clear which way she will lean. “Our government believes that a site involving the use of illicit substances should be strictly controlled to protect everyone in the community,” she told reporters. “Accordingly, we believe that the application process needs to be changed to create formal opportunities for local voices to be heard and their views considered before an exemption would be considered.” In a note attached to the petition, Conservative Party operations director Jenni Byrne says, ``special interests are trying to open up these supervised drug consumption sites in cities and towns across Canada — over the objections of local residents and law enforcement. the canadian press

A Montreal boy who was 12 years old when he allegedly shot his 16-yearold brother to death will remain in a detention centre pending his trial. The boy, now 13 years old, is charged with manslaughter and faces other charges related to an alleged armed robbery a few days before the death of his brother. Judge Dominique Wilhelmy said the accused still presents a danger to society because of drug and alcohol consumption.

In what could be a first in Canada, the rainbowcoloured Pride Flag is to be raised at a military base in Edmonton. A soldier at the base made the request through the chain of command to the base commander, and his request was granted. Navy Lt. The virus is carried by aphids and has been detected in the Debert area, near Truro, as well as the Annapolis Valley. But MacDonell said he wasn’t worried about the possibility of the virus spreading much further because of the relatively short distances aphids travel. The affected plants aren’t harmful to eat but they are often stunted and can’t be sold, and berries may disappear from the plants. The Associated Press File

RICHARD CROUSE AND MARK BRESLIN

Searching for laughs The Internship. Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn fail to rekindle that Wedding Crashers magic in this poor man’s version of Revenge of the Nerds Richard: Mark, this is the funniest infomercial I’ve ever seen. As a comedy movie it doesn’t rate that high, but as an advertisement for Google it’s a knee slapper. I’ve seen product placement in movies before, but this is something else. By the time Rose Byrnes’ character says, “I believe what we do here makes people’s lives better,” I was ready to worship at the

Church of the Sacred Search Engine. We also learn that Google is ranked as the best place to work in America. That’s all great, but I was hoping for more laughs with my infomercial. What did you think? Mark: Ugh! The shameless corporate tie-in made me want to take a shower. And it opens up the door for less savoury companies to do the same thing: can Monsanto: The Movie be far behind? It’s too bad, because the leads are great, and it’s a great premise — but I didn’t laugh once. It could have been a version of Animal House set at a business behemoth, but comes off as a bad Revenge of the Nerds. The idea would make a

great reality series, but the movie flops and feels engineered from the first frame onwards. RC: I’m not so sure I thought the leads were great. There are some laughs in The Internship. Unfortunately, very few of them are generated by Vaughn and Wilson. The chemistry that made Wedding Crashers such a big hit eight years ago is still in place, but the material isn’t. They still banter a blue streak but it feels tired and old, like many of the jokes. The two luddites at a tech mecca should have been workable, but it often feels like laughing at grandpa because he can’t figure out how to work the remote.

MB: I meant the leads are great, but not in this movie! Everything seems laboured, underscored, and over directed. These two guys may preach the value of eccentricity in the workplace, but the script defies their goal at every turn. It’s a very conventional movie that’s even a little smarmy at times. The old Vince Vaughn would have made fun of the sentimentality that crowds any good moments out of the picture. And Wilson’s role is just too vaporous to register. RC: Perhaps next time the screenwriters can Google some better jokes. MB: I say Yahoo! to that.

This new buddy comedy pairs Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn for the first time since 2005’s Wedding Crashers. They are Nick and Billy, two wild and crazy guys whose sales jobs are made obsolete in the technological age. Unable to get a foothold in the new media field they crash Google’s Mountain View, Calif. headquarters and become “noogles” in hopes of landing gigs as interns, despite having no experience with computers. “We’re looking at some sort of mental Hunger Games against a bunch of genius kids for just a handful of jobs,” says Nick.

•••••

•••••

This slow moving Mississippi river-set movie features infidelity, murder and theft, but at its heart it isn’t really about any of those things. Not really. Instead it’s a story about the things we do for love. When two 14-year-old boys discover a mysterious stranger named Mud (Matthew McConaughey) living on a remote island, they get drawn into a possibly illegal scheme to reunite the loner with his true love Juniper (Reese Witherspoon). Methodical and moody, the film takes its time telling the story, but the performances are stellar and quietly effective.

To call The Purge cooked-up is an injustice to baked goods. A dystopian futuristic thriller about a family enduring an annual 12-hour government-backed event whereby crimes of any sort are legal (somehow this curbs violence the other 364 days of the calendar?) is as contrived and callous as cinema gets. If the filmmaker’s aim was to create a moral allegory akin to A Clockwork Orange, he didn’t even come within an eyelash.

There’s not much ‘Buzz’ in space: Aldrin While astronaut Buzz Aldrin enjoys movies about space, he doesn’t always think they get it right. His main point of contention after seeing After Earth: “There was a lot of noise. In space, you don’t get that much noise.” Aldrin, who followed Neil Armstrong onto the surface of the moon during the historic Apollo 11 landing in 1969, says that “noise doesn’t propagate in a vacuum. We talked over headsets.” Aldrin enjoyed the father-son dynamic between Will Smith and son Jaden, but thought there was a little too much “shoot’em-up” for his taste. “I hope the aliens are more peaceful than they are in this film, wherever they are,” Aldrin joked. the associated press

Interview. Former Alexisonfire frontman Dallas Green talks about his depression after leaving band he helped form Two years ago, Little Hell granted City and Colour’s Dallas Green his greatest success yet — platinum sales, his first chart-topping album and eventually, a Juno Award for songwriter of the year. So naturally, as he toured his most popular record yet, he was miserable. That Green was blue had nothing to do with Little Hell, which he liked, but instead a heavy secret he’d been toting: the 32-year-old had already decided to depart the beloved post-hardcore band he’d helped to found more than a decade earlier, Alexisonfire, but news wouldn’t reach the public until months later.

“Making Little Hell, I knew I had left the band,” he recalled during a recent interview at an east Toronto bar. “I was lying to all the public, right? ... And that really (messed) me up.” It took making The Hurry and the Harm — out Tuesday — to help heal Green. As he was wrapping up the Little

CTV adds Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in with fall TV lineup Network news. The Joss Whedon-created series will anchor a new Tuesday lineup Buzzy shows starring Toni Collette, Josh Holloway, Malin Akerman and Bethenny Frankel are joining a revamped CTV lineup, but the network is touting a relative scarcity of new series as testament to a consistent, stable schedule. The market leader notes it’s picked up only four new dramas, two new comedies and one new unscripted series for prime time this fall. They include the Collette thriller Hostages, also featuring Dylan McDermott and Tate Donovan; Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., created by Joss Whedon; the paranormal drama The Tomorrow People and the police drama Played. The Whedon show will anchor a whole new lineup Tuesday, to be followed by the ’80s-set family comedy The Goldbergs and the new sitcom

Trophy Wife, starring Bradley Whitford and Akerman. The night is capped by Person of Interest, which jumps to CTV after previously airing on City. Meanwhile, budding chefs are the stars of Junior Masterchef, a spin-off of the culinary competition series that will showcase talented kids between the ages of eight and 13 in food challenges and cook-

offs. More is on the way for midseason, with additions including Holloway’s high-tech spy show Intelligence, the mystical drama Believe from Lost creator J.J. Abrams and Masterchef Canada, a Canadian version of the Gordon Ramsay hit. Mid-season comedies include Kirstie Alley in her selftitled comedy, Kirstie, the

serialized sitcom Mixology, Dave Foley’s new multi-cam comedy Spun Out, and the ’90sset family comedy Surviving Jack, with former Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Christopher Meloni. “Year-after-year, CTV offers programming consistency and durability not found anywhere else,” Phil King, president of CTV programming and sports,

said Thursday in a statement. Executives were to introduce the new lineup with allday promotional events Thursday featuring Frankel, Donovan and Delroy Lindo from Believe. Daytime this fall will see the addition of the homegrown talk show The Social and the official arrival of Frankel’s talk show Bethenny, which previewed with a short run last year. And Late Night with Jimmy Fallon joins CTV in the fall, with Seth Meyers in the chair this winter after Fallon leaves to take over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno. It will follow The Daily Show and lead into Conan. Meanwhile, CTV is moving Dancing With The Stars, Tuesday’s edition of The Voice, The X Factor, American Idol and Undercover Boss over to CTV Two this fall. CTV also announced that its entire new lineup will be available on CTV GO, an on-demand platform allowing viewers to access a live stream of the channel as well as premium on-demand programming. It debuts this fall. THE CANADIAN PRESS

He decided to work quickly, wanting to figure out new songs before re-immersing himself in the Alexis headspace before their bittersweet victory lap. In Nashville and Toronto, he put together The Hurry and the Harm and had a “wonderful experience.” After completing the Alexis tour, he was suddenly in a far more positive place than he had been in a long time. “For the first time in eight or nine years, I didn’t have anything to do,” he said. “I had the record done ... and I finished and closed the book on the Alexis chapter. The first couple weeks of January are the first two weeks I’ve ever relaxed, like literally relaxed, in eight or nine years. And it was a really big moment. Planning a wedding is no piece of cake, although you do get one in the end. But the road to the big day can be bumpy, especially when it comes to choosing wine to be served for that all important toast to the bride. Try to focus on wines that will charm everyone from your know-it-all boss to your new mother-in-law. Worry less about what you prefer and more about what the majority of your guests will enjoy. Then there’s the cost. Here is where size matters. There’s a savings component when you trade up, so bigger is always better. The selection of 1.5 litre bottles varies wildly across the country. So does their flavour profiles, with many “Canadian” versions made from a blend of imported and domestic juice. Chile offers some of the best value when it comes to larger bottles, with Concha y Toro’s 2011 Frontera Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot (1,500 ml, $13.95 to $19.99) offering bright, red berry fruit and Frontera Sauvignon Blanc (1,500 ml, $13.95 to $19.99) showing off gooseberry and citrus expression. QMJHL. Though confident with returning roster, Cam Russell says anything could happen ANDREW RANKIN

andrew.rankin@metronews.ca

Cam Russell isn’t planning a blockbuster deal, but he admits anything could happen on draft weekend. Confident he’ll ice a solid squad next season, the Halifax Mooseheads’ general manager is going into Friday’s trade window and QMJHL draft day on Saturday in Chicoutimi, Que., feeling relaxed and excited. But given the inherent unpredictably of the event, there’s always potential for fireworks. “I find that a lot of that happens as you go; you don’t always go in with a plan of doing that, or you can go in with a plan of doing that, but it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen,” said Russell. “Right now we’re not looking at making a big blockbuster trade but anything can happen on the draft floor.” Russell is confident in the existing depth on the Mooseheads’ roster, even if it doesn’t include the team’s top line of Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin and Marty Frk, who all have a realistic shot of playing pro next year. Russell won’t have the luxury of a first-round pick, but with two second-round selections (34th and 38th overall), the Mooseheads should net a couple of talented impact players. The Mooseheads’ other 10 selections include

Mooseheads general manager Cam Russell isn’t expecting to sign off on any blockbuster this weekend, but he’s not counting anything out at the QMJHL draft. JEFF HARPER/METRO

fourth-, fifth- and seventhround picks. Having done his homework, Russell’s approaching this weekend open-minded.

“We’re looking for all positions; we’re looking for the best players. We’ve felt we’ve done a good job in the past with drafting players, we ex-

pect no different this time.” Besides that, the Mooseheads have the good fortune of having two first-round picks in the upcoming CHL Import Draft, who will replace Frk and San Jose Sharks prospect Konrad Abeltshauser. “It’s pretty exciting. But it’s also sad to say goodbye to Marty and Konrad, they’ve been such a big part of our hockey team for so long …

but you’re going to see very good players come in here and they’re going to be exciting guys to watch.” Waiting their turn

34

The Mooseheads are slated to make their first selection in the draft with the 34th pick.

Nova Scotians could serve as dark horses Maybe Saturday’s QMJHL draft doesn’t boast a bonanza of top-level Nova Scotian talent, but there are a few up-and-comers worth watching out for. Based on the league’s Central Scouting Service, no Nova Scotian is a projected first-rounder, but three Haligonians are expected to be

selected in the following, second round. Topping the trio, in the 25th spot, is Cameron Lee, a defenceman who suited up for Northwood prep school in New York. Halifax Titans teammates Nicholas Welsh and Campbell Pickard are listed just behind Lee, in the 27th and 30th slots.

Halifax Mooseheads general manager Cam Russell said he’d love to have all kinds of players from Nova Scotia and its capital, but not at the expense of talent. “Everybody wants to have hometown kids on their roster, that doesn’t mean that you’re not going to take the best player that’s available,”

said Russell. “We owe it to the organization and fans to put the best team together as possible.” Lucas Sangster of the Pictou Weeks Crushers is the next highest projected Nova Scotian pick at 42nd overall. Five other Nova Scotians are projected to go in the

fourth and fifth rounds, including Cape Breton West Islanders centre Colby Tower (55), forward Noah Bauld (68) of Northwood prep, forward Bradley Kennedy (72) of the Cape Breton West Islanders and forwards Jesse Hamer( 83) and Andrew Shewfelt (88) of Dartmouth Taylor Flooring. ANDREW RANKIN/METRO

French Open

It’s a Serena, Maria final showdown Serena Williams reached the French Open final for the first time since 2002 when she beat Sara Errani 6-0, 6-1 Thursday. The No. 1-ranked Williams’ opponent Saturday will be defending champion Maria Sharapova, who defeated Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Against Errani, the runner-up last year, Williams took control by winning 26 of 34 points in the opening set. The match was 37 minutes old before Errani won a game, and the crowd responded with a roar as the Italian raised her arms in mock jubilation. Williams was undeterred and extended her career-best winning streak to 30 consecutive matches. She improved to 20-3 in major semifinals. The 15-time Grand Slam champion won her only Roland Garros title 11 years ago, beating sister Venus in the final.

metronews.ca WEEKEND, June 7-9, 2013

Horoscopes

Aries

March 21 - April 20 Try not to let your anxieties get the better of you. As Neptune turns retrograde in the most sensitive area of your chart today, you may see problems where none exist. Act as if life is wonderful — and it will be.

Taurus

April 21 - May 21 Today’s events will encourage you to believe that all things are possible. But they could also tempt you to take foolish risks, so think before you act. If you make a mistake, fix it.

Gemini

May 22 - June 21 Keep things simple today. Also, tread carefully when dealing with employers and other important people. They may see you as a threat and try to clip your wings.

Cancer

June 22 - July 23 The planets warn you should watch what you say today, especially if you are one of those Cancerians who tend to speak before fully engaging your brain. You are entitled to your opinion but others are just as entitled to disagree.

Leo

July 24 - Aug. 23 You will act on impulse quite a bit over the next 24 hours. Just be careful you don’t say anything that could have a negative financial impact.

Virgo

Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 Your emotions may be raging but you are determined not to let anyone know about it. That’s probably a good move, because if your rivals realize how deep your feelings are, they may exploit them.

Libra

Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 Don’t let your responsibilities weigh you down. It does not matter how much work you have to do or how far behind you are in your schedule, you must remain cheerful.

Scorpio

Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 Others may give in to despair today but no way are you going to let it affect you. In fact, the more those around you indulge in feelings of doom and gloom, the more you will laugh at them.

Sagittarius

Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 Don’t feel guilty about what happens to others. You are not responsible for the world and its woes and those who say you are should be laughed at loud and long.

Capricorn

Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 Neptune’s apparent change of direction in the travel area of your chart will leave you a bit confused about what you should be doing and where you should be going. The good news is there’s no need to rush.

Aquarius

Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 You may think you know what is going on but the planets warn you are missing an important piece of the puzzle and it could cost you money. Whatever else you do today, don’t take chances.

Pisces

Feb. 20 - March 20 Neptune, your ruler, begins one of its retrograde phases today. Don’t be surprised if important issues seem to move in the opposite direction of where you want them to. SALLY brOMPTON
