Mayor Sam Katz says he’s confident Investors Group Field won’t be “getting back together” with the traffic woes that plagued the Winnipeg Blue Bombers pre-season game when Taylor Swift performs this Saturday. “I’m confident that all of the problems that I saw at the Bomber exhibition game can all be resolved,” said Katz following Wednesday’s executive policy committee meeting. “It was like the opening of a restaurant. It was a trial run.” Katz said “there’s no question” that a big issue was how
slow traffic moved once it turned onto Chancellor Matheson Road and University Crescent, and he suggested having more experienced people and proper signs “so people know where to go.” Kevin Donnelly, GM of True North Sports and Entertainment, the event’s organizer, said there will be signage, and parking lots will open at 2 p.m., hours before the gates open at 5 p.m. Donnelly also confirmed park-and-rides will be available, and information on their locations should be on the Investors Group Field website by Thursday. Donnelly said taking into account the ages of the concertgoers, they’ve expanded the capacity of pickup and drop-off spots to 1,400. A checkpoint that caused delays during the June 12 Bombers game has been scrapped, he added.

Trial
The sexual assault trial of Orthodox archbishop Seraphin Storheim will not resume until September. The Crown closed its case Tuesday and the defence has said it expects to call witnesses when the trial resumes Sept 12.
Children have been removed from an orthodox Mennonite community in southern Manitoba, where more adults have been charged with assaulting youngsters. Manitoba Family Services confirms that children from the community have been taken into care and are being placed in “culturally sensitive” locations, but would not say how many or reveal any other details. Two adults have been charged with assault and assault with a weapon against a
combined 12 children. That is in addition to similar charges laid in March against two other adults in the community. All four are accused of hitting children with objects such as cattle prods and leather whips. Defence lawyer Scott Newman, who represents the first two people charged, says the case is still in its early stages and he is awaiting more disclosure from the Crown.

The 22-year-old — who ordered the spinach and goat cheese quiche on her first visit to the new Chez Sophie — grew up and works in St. Boniface and is a big fan of the restaurant’s other location. “I love the atmosphere ... there’s something really exciting about being on the bridge.”

A new program from CancerCare Manitoba hopes to speed access for cancer patients to be diagnosed and treated. Called the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Cancer Control program, it will help increase access for “all Manitobans facing barriers to cancer services, resulting in less stress and worry for patients and their families,” said Health Minister Theresa Oswald. The program will have several outreach services, including a patient access co-ordinator who will work to connect
patients, families and healthcare providers. Staff will also travel to First Nations and Métis gatherings around Manitoba to share information with the goal of catching cancer earlier, said Oswald. “The program will also reach out to new Canadians and other populations who face challenges in accessing cancer services due to factors such as language, geography or lack of knowledge about cancer screening, prevention and care options,” she added. Chez Sophie — the new restaurant on Esplanade Riel — quietly opened its doors on Monday. The Parisian restaurant, owned and operated by husband and wife Stéphane and Sophie Wild, didn’t hold an official opening, but word got around quickly. “It’s summer and everybody’s walking on the bridge and they go ‘Oh, it’s open,’” floor manager Caroline Rousseau said. “We rolled our tables twice (Wednesday) for lunch and supper will probably be the same.” Chez Sophie, which also has a 30-seat location — Chez Sophie Bistro — in St. Boniface, replaces the bridge’s previous tenant, Salisbury House. Guatemalan-CMHR partnership to ‘break long silence’ Winnipeg’s Canadian Museum for Human Rights has partnered with a Guatemalan organization that is building its own memorial to human rights violations in the small central American nation. Stuart Murray, president of the CMHR, signed a memorandum of understanding with the chair of Memorial Para la Concordia, Julio Solorzano Foppa, on Wednesday following a panel discussion at the University of Winnipeg. “We want to help break the long silence surrounding human rights atrocities,” said Murray. Solorzano Foppa, the son of former Guatemalan president Juan Jose Arevalo, saw his own family affected by the dictatorship of the 1980s — his mother, poet Alaide Foppa, and two

Two men stabbed after trying to stop alleged thief Winnipeg police are probing an assault in the 200 block of Edison Avenue. Two men told police they saw an unknown man inside a neighbour’s vehicle shortly after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. When they confronted the suspect, he stabbed them both before running away. Both men were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect is described as aboriginal, 17- to 22-yearsold, about 6 feet tall and with a mole on his face. Wednesday at John de Graff Elementary School, Premier Greg Selinger announced an investment of more than $15 million to renovate or build 28 classrooms in six school divisions across the province, including two new classrooms at John de Graff. “The schools are chosen based on the demand and the amount of pressure in the school to have additional classrooms,” Selinger said. “For example (John de Graff) has 400 children. In a K-5 school there’s lots of pressure and two additional classrooms will allow us to
meet the objective of getting it down to about 20 children per class. Currently in Manitoba, there are five new schools under construction or in the design phase in Thompson, Winkler and Winnipeg. In February, the Manitoba government announced an additional $4 million to hire teachers across the province, another part of its initiative to cap K to Grade 3 classes at 20 students by 2017. The Premier said much of the capital for these early education investments is coming out of the recent PST increase.
Crime. Police kept busy with string of robberies Is it the nice weather? The mosquitoes driving them crazy? For whatever reason, Winnipeg police were kept busy with a string of robberies. First, police arrested three male teens accused of robbing a 23-year-old man in the area of McMeans Avenue East and Kildare Avenue East on Tuesday. The teens demanded and received the man’s personal property before running away. Police caught up with them and arrested two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old. Police are also on the hunt for a bank robber who robbed a bank just before 2 p.m. in the 200 block of Portage Avenue, with the second coming in at about 3 p.m. in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue. The suspect is described as
black, about 5 foot 5 inches tall, 35-40 years old with a shaved/ bald head. Police are looking, too, for a thief who robbed a disabled man of his medications. The theft was in the 400 block of Pacific Avenue shortly after 3:30 p.m. Two men, one confined to a wheelchair, told police an unknown man snatched a duffel bag off the wheelchair. The bag contained medications belonging to both victims, including 240 Tylenol 3, 177 Xanax and 59 Restoril. And finally, police are looking for a man who they say robbed a restaurant in the 800 block of Henderson Highway around 11 a.m. Police are looking for a white man, 30, about 5 foot nine inches tall with a medium to heavy build. High school could be bad for your health High school may improve students’ minds, but it does the opposite for their bodies. A new study from the University of Waterloo suggests Canadian students in Grade 12 are in worse health than their younger high-school peers. The research, published in the latest issue of the journal BMC Public Health, found that by the time students reach senior year, they’re at a significantly increased risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes and lung cancer. It shows that over four years of high school, the number of smokers went up 170 per cent, binge drinking jumped 167 per cent and marijuana use rose by 124 per cent. What’s more, the vast majority of students — more than 89 per cent — didn’t meet Health Canada’s guidelines for minimum physical activity and barely seven per cent reported eating enough fruit and vegetables. Unknown Mortal Orchestra is the product of New Zealand native Ruban Nielson, who makes fuzzed-out, psychedelic grooves during sleepless nights in his Portland, Oregon basement. The nocturnal music maker — formerly of Kiwi noise rock band The Mint Chicks — started UMO in spring of 2010, when he anonymously posted the track Ffunny Ffrends to his Bandcamp profile. The trippy tune caught the attention of some popular bloggers and UMO has since made two full-length albums, including II, released in February on Jagjaguwar. UMO’s psychoactive/retrospective sound can partly be attributed to Nielson’s affinity for analog recording techniques. He uses multiple tape recorders in combination with Pro Tools audio software. “I’ll record to tape and then to Pro Tools or I’ll record with Pro Tools and then re-amp to tape,” Nielson says. “Most of the tracks end up having tape involved on some level. But he wants to try bringing in other people on the third UMO album, having recently worked with engineers Russell Elevado (D’Angelo, Al Green) and Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Adele). “I just want the records to get better and better,” Nielson says. “I don’t necessarily want to trade in what’s working for something different, but there’s only so far I can take it by myself. It’s a lot of work to do an entire record by you. It gets exhausting. It would be nice to just be an artist for a few days, just getting to concentrate on music and not everything else.”

Breathing life into a story about the undead

Brad Pitt crossed his Zs for new film Brad Pitt wanted to build a better blockbuster. During the years Hollywood shifted toward increasingly bigger spectacles and superhero tentpoles, one of the movies’ biggest stars largely stayed on the sidelines, focusing instead on ambitious ensembles. But the zombie apocalypse World War Z, which opens Friday, is Pitt’s bold, long-gestating, big-budget effort to enter the franchise fray. It’s been a humbling crusade. “These films are much more difficult than I realized,” Pitt said in a recent interview over coffee at a restaurant off Times Square. Based on the 2006 sci-fi novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks (son of Mel), the $200-million-plus film has had a rocky path to theatres. It’s gone through a swarm of screenwriters, several key crew changes, a postponed release date and, most notably, a reshot ending. But most moviegoers that

Not only are zombie movies persistent fixtures of the multiplex but the walking dead can be seen on television, in video games and even read about in published guides to surviving fictional outbreaks. So with World War Z set to open, how does star Mireille Enos think the film will fare in such a saturated market? “Well, on an action level, we have the fastest zombies,” offered the actress during an interview in Manhattan. “There’s also the family story, which is a survival

Sopranos star James Gandolfini dies at 51 James Gandolfini, who won three Emmys for his role as Tony Soprano on HBO’s The Sopranos, reportedly died in Italy Tuesday after suffering a heart attack, TMZ reports. Gandolfini, who was 51, was in Italy to attend the 59th Taormina Film Festival in Sicily. He first garnered fame playing a hitman in 1993’s
True Romance. But it was his role as the brash, troubled mob boss Tony Soprano that earned him legions of fans of the six-season HBO series. The fearless National Enquirer claims to have unearthed a video of famed “chef” Paula Deen allegedly admitting to using the N-word as well as making a myriad of terrible racist jokes, aimed at African Americans and Jewish people. The Enquirer claims Deen was filmed in a May 17 deposition to defend herself and her brother Bubba Hiers against a giant lawsuit filed by the former general man-
ager of their Savannah, Ga., restaurant. Metro has not seen the video, so we have no way of verifying its authenticity. Lisa Jackson is suing the family for use of defamatory language by Deen and sexual harassment and infliction of distress and assault by Hiers. The worst from the tape? The Inquirer alleges Deen admits to saying that she wanted “black waiters to play the role of slaves in a wedding party she was planning.” Deen also reportedly gave several examples of when she used the N-word and fesses up to making racist jokes about “Jewish people, rednecks, black folks... I can’t determine what offends another person.” Her defence is “they’re jokes.” Actually, no they aren’t. Even in Georgia, those aren’t jokes.
Miley Cyrus isn’t being shy when it comes to her opinions on drugs and alcohol. “I think alcohol is way more dangerous than marijuana — people can be mad at me for saying that, but I don’t care. I’ve seen a lot of people spiral down with alcohol, but I’ve never
seen that happen with weed,” she tells Rolling Stone during an online Q&A. “As long as it isn’t illegal, there are far more dangerous things. And it’s legal in the state of California. So I’m happy to live in California, a place where you can be whoever you want to be.”

1. Bring steaks to room temperature, about 20 minutes. Pre-heat barbecue to medium-high heat. 2. In a small bowl whisk together garlic, olive oil, Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Cup run helping city get past hurt from attack at Boston Marathon They have come to wave flags or meet players or just appear on the video screen, invariably to standing ovations, during the Boston Bruins’ run to the Stanley Cup final. Many are in wheelchairs, some are in uniform, and others have been honoured on behalf of those who couldn’t make it at all. As the Bruins attempt to win the NHL championship, they have shared the spotlight with the victims and first responders from the Boston Marathon bombings, using them as “Fan Banner Captains.” The Bruins are hoping a cup can contribute to the healing. “I think we can help, in
probably a large way,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said this week after the Stanley Cup final returned to Boston for Games 3 and 4. “Everybody is looking right now for something to cheer about, smile about. “I guess it doesn’t fix the things or the people that have been lost. That will never be fixed. At the same time you have to try to heal.” Two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon finish line on April 15, killing three people and injuring hundreds more. The Bruins, who had been scheduled to play that night, postponed that game but returned two days later with an emotional pre-game ceremony and a gritty overtime loss that clinched a berth in the playoffs. Since then, an organization that has long had a close relationship with the military and first responders has brought in those affected by the bombings
— doctors, police and EMTs, along with marathon volunteers, runners and spectators. “You do what you can, obviously, to lift people’s spirits,” Bruins forward Milan Lucic said. “I remember how the city was and reacted to all of that, and it wasn’t a good feeling at all. At the end of the day, you know, we’re fortunate to be living our dream to be playing a game. “Having this to try to take people’s minds off things is something that’s cool to be a part of, and that’s what we talked about before. ” Before Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final on Wednesday night, an ad on the scoreboard asked fans to contribute to the One Fund, the charity established to help the bombing victims.
