City to study ‘Wyatt Weekends’ unpaid Fridays for cost-savings Tugging at city’s administrative purse strings. Finance committee approves councillor’s motion, despite lack of consultation with union BERNICE PONTANILLA

A city councillor’s idea for unpaid Fridays as a cost-saving measure for the city is now a step closer to reality. Coun. Russ Wyatt saw his motion calling for the city’s administration to review the unpaid days — already dubbed “Wyatt Weekends” by the public service — approved by the finance committee during Thursday’s meeting. “We’re not like the provincial government or the federal government where we

can run a deficit … I don’t want to see (a) double-digit property tax increase.” “Wyatt Weekends” would not affect essential services, such as fire, ambulance, police and transit drivers, he added. The motion received support from the other two members of the committee, Coun. Paula Havixbeck and Coun. Grant Nordman, who both stated they’d like to see what the city’s public administration comes back with. However, Havixbeck asked Wyatt if he’d consulted with the city’s largest union, CUPE Local 500, to which Wyatt responded that he hadn’t. Mike Davidson, president

of CUPE 500, said his members are doing their part. “City of Winnipeg employees are already the lowest paid of all of the big cities in Canada,” he said. Davidson said the city currently engages in a practice called “vacancy management,” not filling positions, which amounts to more than $13 million a year in wage savings. “This is already affecting front-line services,” he said, adding that Wyatt supported two initiatives the public has criticized: The $40,000 ward allowance increase for each councillor and the $70,000 “Responsible Winnipeg” golf ad campaign. “How much credibility does this councillor have?”

Four suspicious plastic bags with an unknown substance shut down an East Kildonan thoroughfare near a large grocery store on Thursday and prompted the hazardous-materials unit to investigate. Winnipeg police closed Gateway Road between Mc-

Leod Avenue and Jeffrey Crescent after a “suspicious item” was found just before noon. The closure lasted until about 2 p.m. East Kildonan resident Rob Brykalo said the bags were located along Tu-Pelo Avenue near the Superstore. He and his family had gone to the Superstore to pick up a few items and parked their truck close to the bags. “My boy and I went up to the curb to see it, but not up to (the bags),” he said just before he and his younger son were checked out by paramedics. Brykalo said people who’d gotten closer to the package

About 150 people took to the front of the Manitoba legislature Thursday to denounce the government’s planned sales tax increase and other measures. The demonstration was organized by the Opposition Progressive Conservatives, who accused the NDP government of ignoring the concerns of people who already struggle to get by. Tory Leader Brian Pallister told the crowd the NDP promised to not increase taxes in the 2011 election, then turned around and raised hundreds of millions of dollars in new taxes. The Tories have been using delay tactics in the legislature to stall the passage of a bill that would raise the sales tax by one percentage point — to eight per cent — as of July 1. The protest focused on other concerns as well, including flood compensation and the province’s plan to force small municipalities to amalgamate. Mike Mason, who owns a cottage in Victoria Beach, said the government has not listened to people opposed to amalgamation. “Roughly 75 municipalities of the 90 or 92 that are being forced to amalgamate have said, ‘We don’t want to do this. Can we look at it from a different angle?’ And the government is unwilling to do that.” Pallister acknowledged the small turnout. “We’re here today for a heck of a lot of other people that can’t be here,” he said to applause.

Suspicious packages

Since the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15, Winnipeg police have dealt with 27 suspicious packages, said Const. Eric Hofley. • During the same time frame in 2012 (April 15-June 20) Hofley said Winnipeg police dealt with 16 suspicious packages.

idea to save costs. “I don’t believe that’s something that we would necessarily pursue ... you want to have fully armed officers pulling over vehicles. You never know who you’re going to have in that vehicle, criminal elements,” Clunis said. “I think we’d be putting our

cadets in a significant position of jeopardy to have them doing the actual traffic enforcement because, again, we want to make sure whoever is pulling that person over is fully able to defend themselves. Our cadets are not fully armed.” Clunis said the fact that police carry guns is a deterrent against anyone in the vehicle reacting badly. In addition to Clunis’ safety concern, under provincial legislation cadets are considered “peace officers,” which means a change in law would be required if the cadets were to be armed. Wyatt said he was “kinda surprised” by Clunis’ comments, since six months ago the chief seemed to like the idea.

Robberies. Winnipeg police nab alleged thieves Winnipeg police say a thief on Wednesday tried to sell stolen electronics swiped from a store on McPhillips Street on June 15. The man was trying to peddle them on the Internet, police say. At about 5 p.m, police arrested the suspect, who had several of the stolen electronics on him. A search warrant of his home resulted in the recovery of several other items. A second man is alleged to have been involved in the break and enter and at about 9 p.m. he was nabbed. Police say the man was also responsible for a break and enter in July of last year on Jefferson Avenue. Two men, 15 and 20, are charged with possession of

property obtained by crime under $5,000. Both were released on a promise to appear. Meanwhile, police say they headed to a residential break and enter in the 2000 block of Sinclair Street on Wednesday, shortly before 3 a.m. The homeowner told officers his garage alarm was triggered and he saw two men fleeing on bicycles. One suspect was apprehended and arrested. The stolen property was recovered. Samuel Tache McKay, 25, was charged with break and enter, theft under $5,000 and several breaches of court orders. He is being detained at the Provincial Remand Centre. Jared Story/for Metro

The Roots. Winnipeg’s The Lytics to open for hip-hop masters As part of the Winnipeg International Jazz Festival, local hip-hop crew The Lytics get to open for one of the most influential acts of its genre, The Roots. Formed in 1987 by Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the legendary Grammy Award-winning hip hop crew — and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon house band — was named one of the “Greatest Live Acts in the World” by Rolling Stone in 2003. “We’re definitely excited about this show. I mean, it’s The Roots, right?” says Anthony “Ashy” Sannie, who’s joined in The Lytics by brothers Andrew and Alex Sannie, cousin Mungala Londe and DJ Lonnie Ce. “What they’ve done for hip hop is incredible. They’re a big influence on us in that way.” For The Lytics, the opportunity to support The Roots is an example of perseverance paying off. Ashy says The Lytics’ family

dynamic makes the group extra-durable. That blood is thicker than water element is also evident in The Lytics’ stage show. “Audiences remember the little things, those moments where one person is laughing at another person in the band,” Ashy says. “I hope people see those things in us.” The Lytics open for The Roots this Saturday at the Centennial Concert Hall. The Royal Albert Arms Hotel is closed once again. On Wednesday, via the Albert’s Facebook page, co-owner Daren Jorgenson announced he had turned in the bar’s MLCC license and that the beloved punk/metal venue would be closing. “It (the Albert) is taking up too much of my time and is frankly a soap opera out of control,” said Jorgenson. The “soap opera” — which includes concerns involving coowner Ray Rybachuk’s criminal history — started shortly after the Albert re-opened in March. Previously, the Albert was closed for almost two years due to building maintenance issues.

So, what does the Albert’s closure mean for Winnipeg’s music scene? According to some local artists, not much. “In the time between the Albert’s closing two years ago and the re-opening it’s not like the music scene came to a screech-

ing halt,” said Randy Frykas, 32, a member of the band Clipwing and a filmmaker who made the 2009 documentary Call to Arms: The Story of the Royal Albert. “I strongly believe there’s an energy around that building,

but it’s not like the music scene in Winnipeg completely relies on it.” Nicholas Friesen, a member of Winnipeg music co-op No Label Collective, agrees. “The old Albert bands and the kids who used to go to Lo Pub (which closed last August), now all go to the Windsor Hotel,” Friesen said. Still, both Frykas and Friesen say they’re sad to see the Albert shut down. Same goes for Marty LaFrenière, who plays in Clipwing with Frykas. “It was like the punk rock Cheers of Winnipeg,” LaFrenière said. “Guaranteed there was always someone there I knew or some band I wanted to see.” Quoted

Firefighters apologize for pulling sexist prank ‘Stupid lack of judgment.’ Two men disciplined after sending package with tampons and recipes to fire department with new female hires Kate Webb

Metro in Vancouver

Two Vancouver firefighters have been reprimanded for sending a package containing a box of tampons and recipes from women’s magazines to the Port Coquitlam fire department after it hired its first female members in more than a decade. The package was sent a few weeks ago and addressed to a male friend of the senders who works in the PoCo department, but was intercepted before it got to him. Vancouver Fire Chief John McKearney said the sexist

prank was completely unacceptable, and the pair have both had letters of discipline put in their files. “When it was brought to my attention, I did an investigation, the two members came forward and they went through a disciplinary hear-

ing before a panel of chief officers, and they were subsequently disciplined,” McKearney said Thursday. “It was a stupid, ignorant prank, but they took full responsibility. Both members are young members in our organization. ... They didn’t even stop to think how this would affect members in both organizations and our citizens and especially our women firefighters.” He added that both culprits are “terrific individuals” and said the act was “totally out of character” for them. Gord Ditchburn, president of the union that represents Vancouver firefighters, agreed with McKearney and said the Port Coquitlam fire department has accepted an apology from those responsible. “These two individuals have been model employees over the years and it was an incredibly stupid lack of judgment, and they regret this,” he said. “We do a tremendous amount of work to make sure that our workplace is very respectful.”

WHO. One-third of women worldwide suffer from domestic violence About a third of women worldwide have been physically or sexually assaulted by a former or current partner, according to the first major review of violence against women. In a series of papers released Thursday by the World Health Organization and others, experts estimated nearly 40 per cent of women killed worldwide were slain by an intimate partner. Being assaulted by a partner was the most com-

mon kind of violence experienced by women. WHO defined physical violence as being slapped, pushed, punched, choked or attacked with a weapon. Sexual violence was defined as being physically forced to have sex, having sex because you were afraid of what your partner might do and being compelled to do something sexual that was humiliating or degrading. the associated press

A new report says Canadian youth face the risk of chronic unemployment despite being more educated than ever. The report by CIBC says a lack of summer jobs and parttime work makes it difficult for youth to gain the experience necessary for permanent positions. About 420,000 youth aged 15 to 24, or nearly one in 10 young Canadians, are neither employed nor enrolled in school. CIBC deputy chief economist Benjamin Tal, the study’s author, says these youth likely do

Social media. Instagram adds 15-second video clips Facebook is adding video to its popular photo-sharing app Instagram, following on the heels of Twitter’s growing video-sharing app, Vine. Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom said Thursday that users will be able to record and share 15-second clips by tapping a video icon in the app. They can also apply filters to videos to add contrast, or make them black and white or different hues. “This is the same Instagram we all know and love but it moves,” he said at an event held at Facebook’s Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters. Politics can be hard on the ego, as British Treasury chief George Osborne learned when U.S. President Barack Obama apparently forgot his name at this week’s G8 summit. Britain’s Sun and Financial Times newspapers reported Thursday that Obama repeatedly referred to the Chancellor of the Exchequer as “Jeffrey” — and later apologized, saying he had been thinking of soul singer Jeffrey Osborne. Jeffrey Osborne, whose hits include On the Wings of Love, said he was delighted the president was a big fan. The Associated Press

NASA’s Suomi NPP measures plant growth, vegetation cover and biomass production from satellite information. It is calculated from the visible and near-infrared light reflected by vegetation. The data is also used to measure cloud and aerosol properties, ocean colour, sea and land surface temperature, ice motion, fires, and the planet’s albedo (reflected sunlight). METRO

RICHARD CROUSE AND MARK BRESLIN

Zombie film needs life World War Z. Brad-Pitt-helmed apocalyptic thriller a victim of dim lighting and lacklustre action Richard: Mark, I like zombie movies. I also like Brad Pitt, so I’m disappointed that World War Z feels a bit dead on its feet. It has several thrilling scenes — the zombie hordes crawling over one another to scale a giant wall is really cool — but it doesn’t even have the oomph of an episode of The Walking Dead. I know zombie apocalypses happen in dimly lit places, but the low light in the first hour of the movie makes it almost im-

possible to see Brad laying a whooping on the undead, which is the whole reason you buy a ticket to a movie like this. Mark: Richard, low light means less makeup for the aging Mr. Pitt. But I liked this movie, and I’m not a fan of zombie flicks. The movie reminded me of Contagion but with corporeal viruses that you could actually see. The gore is tasteful, which not everybody will like, but it meant I could concentrate on the story and Pitt’s haircut. But you’re right about the low light. At times I thought I was watching a grad thesis from the Canadian Film Centre. RC: The “aging” Mr. Pitt still looks better than I do on my

best day, low light or not. My problem with it had more to do with not be able to see what was going on. This is a 3D action movie that actively tries to not show you all three dimensions of a good chunk of the action. It builds some atmosphere, but anyone with any braaaaains would have turned up the lights. On the other hand an exciting scene on an airplane really shows what a horror it is to fly in economy class. MB: Ha! That was one of the good scenes, as was the entire Israel sequence, which I think was making a sly point about the limitations of a fortress-state. The long scene in the research facility felt like an exercise in taut, old-fashioned moviemaking, and the opening chase on the

highway was harrowing and involving. But let’s talk about the real stars of the picture: the zombies. They moved fast, which I liked, and often as a mass, frighteningly, by the thousands, creating an indelible image of a foe that may not just be zombies, but communists. RC: It’s just that the movie doesn’t offer up any really great zombie one-on-one head splitting action à la The Walking Dead or great characters. One or the other would have breathed some life into this movie. MB: Outside of Pitt, none of the characters really stick out, with one exception: David Morse’s cameo as a turncoat CIA agent. Scarier than the zombies.

There’s nothing quite like a Sofia Coppola directed flick. Her latest, the based-on-fact The Bling Ring is ripe with her bright, breezy, sensual style, charting as it does the days and nights in the lives of a gaggle of spoiled, empty rich kids obsessed enough by celebrity that they stalk and then rob the homes of the glitterati. Gently riffing on just how dour our social-networkdamaged, empty-calorie-obsessed society has become, the movie almost plays like a horror film, albeit one laced with pummelling electro-pop music. A work of serious pop art.

If you’re a fan of the “Before” movies, watching Before Midnight will be like reconnecting with old friends. In the almost 20 years since we first met Jesse and Celine (Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) they have flirted and talked through the vagaries of life in two films, Before Sunset and Before Sunrise. Now they are a committed couple with twin daughters, but their introspection continues courtesy of beautifully written and performed conversations that explore how fissures can develop no matter how deep a couple’s connection.

••••• With films like Wall-E and Ratatouille, Pixar became as known for developing thoughtful, streamlined family fare as it did for animation advancements, but Monsters University shows these pioneers could be losing their sharpness. A prequel to 2001’s Monsters, Inc., the standard storyline follows unassuming eyeball Mike Wachowski as he struggles to succeed in the schooling of scaring kiddies. Sure, it’s fun and froth for the preteen set but the film’s simplified formula simply falls flat against Pixar’s best work. steve gow

Pitt gets political

“I was interested in a political film using zombies as an excuse. I used them like the Trojan horse to ask questions like: What would happen with social or political aspects, if the world suffered a pandemic illness? Who would be the powerful countries and who would be the most vulnerable?” Actor Brad Pitt on his new film, World War Z, which is playing in theatres today. Metro World News

••••• The story of three teenage friends who build a ramshackle clubhouse in the woods, The Kings of Summer doesn’t break much ground in the adolescent coming of age genre — it just does it really well. Two parts teen comedy, one part slice-of-life drama, think of it as Stand by Me meets Superbad. The kids might be a little too good looking and witty, but the charming characters and constant laughs are a winning combo. colin mcneil

How much dumber can this guy get? Dumb and Dumber To. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are set to reprise their roles as the inept Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne Nearly 20 years after Dumb and Dumber was released, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are reuniting for Dumb and Dumber To. Daniels said Carrey approached directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly two years ago about doing a sequel. “Jim has been against all sequels, and you know, understandably so. ... But he turned 50 and that will mellow you out, and suddenly he’s going, ‘Let’s have some fun. ... Come on,’ and we’re going, ‘Great,’ and so the Farrellys said, ‘This isn’t a money grab. Let’s really write a great second movie that takes the original and then blows it up even further, and so I think they did that,” Daniels said in an interview Wednesday.

Jeff Daniels says Harry Dunne hasn’t gained one IQ point in 20 years. the associated press

Universal Pictures, which acquired the domestic distribution rights after Warner Bros. dropped out, confirmed the sequel. “It’s taken two years to get the studios and all that stuff worked out,” Daniels said. “The easiest thing to say in Hollywood is ‘no.’ You keep your job if you say ‘no.’ If you say ‘yes’ and you’re not right, you lose your job. There’s a lot of ‘no.’ And we had a lot of ‘no’ for two years and finally ‘yes,’ it’s comin’ around, and I think it’s got a chance to be I hope better

than the first one.” Daniels said he’s read the script and calls it “painfully funny.” The original premise wasn’t that deep. It followed two wellmeaning but moronic friends, Lloyd Christmas (Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Daniels), as they travelled cross-country to find the owner of a briefcase filled with money. “We’re middle-aged and still that stupid. Our IQ has not gone up one point combined,” he said. The Associated Press

Roland Emmerich, director of White House Down and Independence Day, says the West Wing gave him the cold shoulder this time around. handout

Two White House flicks, one summer White House Down. Independence Day director didn’t get a chance to decimate America’s house of power this time Ned Ehrbar

Metro World News in Hollywood

Maybe it’s because he’s best known for blowing up the White House in Independence Day, but when director Roland Emmerich turned to the West Wing for help in making White House Down — his new film about the White House overrun by terrorists — he got the cold shoulder. “We applied for shooting permits and were denied,” Emmerich says with a laugh. “I don’t know why, it’s strange.” If the plot sounds familiar, it may be because there has already been one movie about terrorists taking over the White House this year. Given the success Olympus Has Fallen has already enjoyed, is Emmerich worried about comparisons? “No, not really worried. I mean,

maybe a little bit because naturally I would’ve been much happier being the first out, but also I didn’t want them to rush it,” he says. “I’m not terribly concerned. Hopefully it will work. We’ll see June 28 if this will go over nicely.” The fact that there are two White House takeover movies so close to each other is a total coincidence, Emmerich insists. “I had a White House project with Sony for 10, 15 years, and it never came together for several reasons. And so when they bought this spec script by Jamie Vanderbilt, they immediately thought of me and sent it to me the same day they bought it,” he says, explaining that work started very quickly on his new

project. “And then all of a sudden people said, ‘There’s another movie,’ and I said, ‘Really?’ And then I was so deep into it I couldn’t really get out of it. And I also didn’t want to.” But what is a coincidence, according to Emmerich, is the fact that movies with the president as a hero weren’t as popular while Bush was in the White House as they are now or they were under Clinton. “It’s not jingoistic when somebody like (Clinton or Obama) is in the White House to do a White House movie,” he says. “And also these are smart people and you can make them smart characters, which naturally was a little bit difficult under Bush.”

Ethan Hawke Julie Delpy A film by Richard Linklater

Before Midnight

No superheroes for Emmerich

A quick glance at Roland Emmerich’s filmography turns up an interesting fact: Just about everything he’s done has been an original film — not based on other source material or an existing franchise. It makes him something of an anomaly, of which he’s well aware. “It’s very hard to get original movies done these days,” he

says. “People tend to just like franchises. I don’t know what it is — and all over the world. It’s not just in America.” But don’t expect him to change his ways anytime soon: “I have, for example, a hard time making a movie about a comic book hero because I didn’t grow up with comics. For me they kind of inevitably feel silly,” he says.

Ready to dance with the devil one more time? Revenge Wears Prada. Author Lauren Weisberger’s sequel to the wildly popular Devil Wears Prada catches up with Andy and a very familiar face 10 years on

and pick up their story 10 years later, but to create a whole 10-year backstory, so it was kind of the best of both worlds.

Metro World News in New York City

The devil is back. And she’s still wearing Prada. Ten years after The Devil Wears Prada, the main character, Andy, is back for a sequel, Revenge Wears Prada. Author Lauren Weisberger kicked off the launch this month, complete with pink drinks, champagne and plenty of the alternating red- and white-covered books. Metro spoke with Weisberger at the Gilt City launch party in New York City. She said that after surveying a decade of chan-

to walk down the aisle. One of those challenges? Well, we’ll let you guess, but it includes a familiar face.

Lauren Weisberger. torstar news service

ges herself, she wanted to explore what Andy’s life would be like 10 years on. In the book, Andy — en-

gaged and now helming her own magazine — encounters fresh challenges of her own while also preparing

How did you decide to bring back Andy for a new book? I’d been thinking about it for a really long time. So much happens in all of our lives in 10 years. I just got really curious about what would be going on with Andy and Emily and the whole crew. I thought it would be really fun to not just check in with them

How was it different writing this book than your other novels, where you started fresh with brand-new characters? It was a little strange, but I really liked it. It’s great and it’s fun to sit down with an empty screen, and you can just start from scratch. For me, the challenge came in wanting to stay true to them, wanting to keep them the same people that the readers recognized and

connected with the first time, but also letting them grow up and face their own obstacles. What will Andy face in this new book that she wouldn’t have faced 10 years ago? Ten years ago she was wideeyed, fresh-faced, straight out of college, super naive. And 10 years have gone by, and she’s way more experienced in the industry now. She’s doing what she loves, which is writing. She’s founded this magazine, and I think she’s much more confident, much more sure of herself. She’s a proper grown-up.

Susan Lucci maid to make ’em laugh and be devious Devious Maids. Multifaceted actress looking forward to being part of new show that follows the lives of five Hispanic house servants

Susan Lucci and executive producer Eva Longoria. invision for lifetime/ap photo

For decades, audiences knew her as a dramatic — some may even say melodramatic — soap actress, but there is another side to Susan Lucci. “She is so hysterically funny, and I think that is something really new and interesting because I don’t think people have seen her be this funny and this free,” says Ana Ortiz, who stars with Lucci on the new Lifetime series Devious Maids. “I used to look at people on film doing comedy and my hat goes off to them,” says Lucci. “‘How do they do that with so many takes, so many bits and pieces?’ I already had so much

respect for them.” Premiering this Sunday, the series follows five Hispanic maids who work for some of the wealthiest and most powerful families in Beverly Hills. As the season is unveiled, the maids show they can be as devilish, scheming and witty as their employers. Devious Maids is executive produced by Eva Longoria and Marc Cherry — the man who also created Desperate Housewives. “Just the name Marc Cherry. ‘Marc Cherry has a new show? Yes, I would like Excited

“Just the name Marc Cherry. ‘Marc Cherry has a new show? Yes, I would like to be part of that.’” Susan Lucci, actress On getting the call to be in Lifetime’s new show Devious Maids

to be a part of that.’ Then, when I read the script it was a page turner,” says Lucci, who plays one of the high-society mavens. “There are hilarious aspects and then there are intriguing things: the twists, the turns, the surprises. He does them so well. “All the characters,” says Lucci, “are fully realized characters. There is not one cardboard, cartoon in the entire group.” “There is funny, heart, drama and sex,” adds Ortiz, who played Hilda Suarez on Ugly Betty. It, like Devious Maids, was based on a successful Spanish-language TV show that aired in Latin and South America. “I have had good luck with these novellas-turnedAmerican shows. For me it was a no-brainer. There is, for lack of a better term, a real upstairs/ downstairs quality that I think people are really tuning into right now,” says Ortiz. “It’s the two worlds colliding.” Metro

Controversy

Criticism. While it hasn’t officially aired yet, Devious Maids has already faced criticism for its portrayal of Hispanic women as servants, criticism that Eva Longoria, who executive produces the series with Marc Cherry, takes exception to. Response. “You are telling me their stories aren’t worth telling, that maids are not complex, that they don’t have a life, that they don’t have a story to tell? They do,” Longoria says, who adds mothers who worked as maids have raised many successful Hispanic people in the U.S. “With the demographic of the United States changing rapidly we should represent our diverse country on television.”

actor from The Social Network (twice over) and the new Lone Ranger movie, once had a knife pulled on him during sex. “One chick tried to stab me when we were having sex. I should so not be telling this story. She was like, ‘True love leaves scars. You don’t have any.’ And then she tried to stab me with a butcher knife. Of course I promptly broke up with her — seven months later,” he tells Elle magazine in a new interview. Funny. I had no idea Armie Hammer and Amanda Bynes ever dated, did you?

for her, but she’s happy,” a source tells the magazine. “She’s lying low on the romantic side of things. She doesn’t need that right now. Her focus is on (her daughter) Suri. I don’t think she’s ready.”

When you think of French wines, what place first comes to mind? I asked a cross section of wine lovers (OK, my drinking buddies) and they all came up with the same thing: Bordeaux. Bordeaux is the original home of grape kings like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, along with some of the most gorgeous real estate in the wine world. This region is where the château hits the fan. I recently had a chance to tour Château Mouton Rothschild, one of the classiest wine estates in France and the home of its famous red with the prestigious First Growth status. That kind of wine comes with a price. A recent vintage of Mouton will set you back more than $1,000. But there’s more to the winery than their superstar bottle. It also makes Mouton Cadet, a pair of wines (red and white) that have been shipped to Canada for decades. Though the region is red wine territory, its whites are true undiscovered gems. The 2011 Mouton Cadet Blanc ($12.99 to $15.99) is fresh and bright with a light citrus expression that works wonders with a seafood menu. PRICES

Celebration of cultures, contributions Chris Edwards For Metro

Friday is National Aboriginal Day, a celebration of all Aboriginal cultures in Canada, and of the contributions

those cultures make to this country today. Recognizing the heritage of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, it is a learning experience for all of us. It’s a lot of fun, too. National Aboriginal Day was first celebrated June

21, 1996, having been proclaimed the week before by then governor general Roméo LeBlanc. The date was meaningful — June 21 marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, one recognized with festivals in many

Aboriginal societies. The National Indian Brotherhood (now the Assembly of First Nations) had called for formal recognition of the date nearly 15 years before. Today, NAD events are held across the country, open to all.

Nunavut a force to be reckoned with: Premier Chris Edwards For Metro

Eva Aariak is premier of Nunavut, Canada’s newest territory. She is Nunavut’s second premier, and the first woman to hold the post. The following is an interview with Aariak.

Q

All Canadians know of Nunavut, but few have visited. What are the most common misconceptions about it? I think that visitors are often surprised at how well our territory has married a traditional culture with modern society. We now have a self-governing territory that reflects the language and culture of our society. We have a young population that is going out into the world and doing great things, proudly showing off their Inuit culture. Nunavut has come a very long way. You were once called upon to translate “Internet” into Inuktitut. The long-term success of our language comes from its adaptability and the changes that Inuit continually made to it as we encountered new environments. So coining new terms is old hat for us. “Ikiaqqivik” (Internet) is a traditional word, describing the journey a shaman makes through different dimensions. What will be Nunavut’s greatest challenges over the next decade? We have 25 communities but not a single one is connected by road or rail. All of our supplies are shipped in by sealift during our short

summer season or flown in at great cost. Despite immense potential for natural energy, all of our power comes from dirty diesel generators and the fuel comes up once a year by barge. Although our waters are bountiful with fish, we must off-load it in Greenland because we do not have a deep-sea port. We desperately need long-term investment in basic infrastructure, including housing, hydro, and ports, that will lower the cost of living and doing business. To reach our full economic potential, Nunavut needs the same infrastructure that is taken for granted in southern provinces. Our social issues and poor health indicators are another challenge. An important part of addressing them is empowering our people so that they are proud of who they are and where they come from. National Aboriginal Day doesn’t just celebrate the history of Aboriginal Peoples — it celebrates the contributions Aboriginal Canadians are making to this country every day. How is Canada stronger for having Nunavut as one of its territories? Nunavut’s young, creative population is a force to be reckoned with. In fact, one in five Nunavummiut is an artist, which gives us the highest concentration of artists in the country. By bringing our culture and our perspectives to the world, our people put a human face on Canada’s sovereignty in the Arctic. This will be critical as Canada leads international co-operation in the Arctic over the next two years through its chairman-

Film industry can shape attitudes Chris Edwards For Metro

National Aboriginal Day gives all Canadians the chance to learn about Aboriginal history and identity. But to do that, we must overcome more than a century’s worth of misconceptions — many perpetuated, and even created, by the film industry. Jesse Wente (Ojibwa) is the head of film programmes at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto. He curated last year’s First Peoples Cinema: 1500 Nations, One Tradition — a film program spotlighting films directed by First Peoples from around the world, including First Nations peoples, Inuit, and Métis. The following is an interview with Wente. How much power do you think film has to shape public attitudes about a given group? It’s quite huge. If you look at the history of indigenous people, particularly in North America, for

trying to capture events, as they happened, from a perspective they would recognize. Events were unfolding that those filmmakers felt compelled to capture from an indigenous perspective ... Up until then, you very rarely saw contemporary indigenous people depicted onscreen. National Aboriginal Day recognizes three groups: First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. Do you think the Métis experience has been as well-represented within the indigenous new wave as have the experiences of First Nations and Inuit? No, probably not … But I think that’s more a product of a lack of Métis filmmakers, or a lack of ability to get those films made. I think they’re probably underrepresented, given the size of the population, and the fact that Inuit films are so highly regarded (as they should be — they’re some of the best films ever made in this country). But this will eventually work itself out, and we’ll get more Métis voices making and producing pictures.

A recent class had 10 Aboriginal students, six white students and one Bangladeshi student, Rafique Bhuiyan, enrolled. During the radio training, Bhuiyan was sent out with an Aboriginal woman to ask questions about stereotyping. Here is his personal report.) At First Nations University of Canada, in the Indian communication arts journalism course, many experienced professionals teach about journalism in the 21st century. Merelda Fiddler, a CBC producer and part-time professor of indigenous studies, asked if I would do street

interviews for their radio show about stereotyping. The questions were: What do you think about people of another race or culture and what should we do to not stereotype? Hazel B., an Aboriginal, said, “I think we should look at each other as human beings, not by colour or race. I see many people who do have a problem with other people.” Triss W., a white woman, said, “I think we need to interact and engage with each other and seek to understand them. When we spend time with people and try to understand who they are, these assumptions don’t hold. So, probably, the best thing we can do is to engage and communicate openly.” Abhilash M., an Indian, said, “Teachers and parents should teach children that we are all the same. You should

shone in Hamilton’s first “home” game at Alumni Stadium in Guelph, Ont. The facility on the campus of the University of Guelph will be the Ticats’ home away from home this season while a new venue is being built.

Hamilton finished the exhibition season with a 2-0 record while Winnipeg was 0-2. The two clubs were tied for the CFL’s worst record last year at 6-12. The two teams took different approaches to this contest as Winnipeg came with just 41 players while Hamilton dressed 64. Among the notable Bombers missing was starting quarterback Buck Pierce, who didn’t make the trip after going 0-for-5 passing in the club’s first exhibition game, a 24-6 home loss to Toronto last week. Justin Goltz got the start

and completed 12-of-21 passes for 101 yards and two interceptions as Winnipeg didn’t get over centre field until just over two minutes were left in the first half. Chase Clement, who left Hamilton’s camp in 2009 after just a single practice, and Max Hall took second-half snaps for the Bombers, who committed nine turnovers (six interceptions, two fumbles, downs). Winnipeg kicks off the 2013 regular season Thursday hosting the Montreal Alouettes at new Investors Group Field.

Jonathan Toews didn’t think the Chicago Blackhawks would need six goals to win Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final. By the time Patrick Sharp scored with 8:41 left in the third period to make it 5-4, he figured it would be enough. It wasn’t, but the Blackhawks managed to tie the series when Brent Seabrook’s overtime goal gave them a 6-5 win over Boston. Still, they know they must adjust on the defensive end going back to Chicago for Game 5 Saturday. “I just don’t think we want to just exchange scoring chances, knowing that we’re giving up odd-man breaks. That’s not part of our game, and it’s not part of the way we want to play,” coach Joel Quenneville said. Quenneville had to reaffirm his stance Thursday that Corey Crawford would remain in net for the Blackhawks moving forward. Crawford’s teammates assumed some of the pressure for the offensive explosion and explained what they need to do to cut down on Boston’s chances. “I think as forwards we can maybe be a little more responsible and getting in shooting lanes the way they would against us,” Toews said. “I think there’s something to be said about blocking shots and maybe helping our goaltender out a little bit more.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

General manager Doug Wilson decided that the rewards outweighed the risks, signing Torres to a $6 million, three-year deal Thursday. Torres showed those skills immediately after coming over in a deadline deal from Phoenix on April 3. He had two goals and four assists in 11 regular season games and provided a needed spark with his speed and physical play that helped San Jose wrap up a playoff spot. He then scored an overtime game-winner in Game 2 of first-round sweep against Vancouver and turned himself into a key component on the Sharks. of Fame, will be on display. The public will have an opportunity to meet players. “I’m actually quite surprised there is this recognition of the World Hockey Association,” former player Gerry Pinder said. “I don’t think I ever believed this was going to happen.” The WHA operated from 1972 to 1979 and lured dozens

of NHL players to its clubs by offering higher salaries and the ability to move between teams. Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, Derek Sanderson, Frank Mahovlich, Jacques Plante, Dave Keon, Pat Stapleton and Mark Messier are among the hockey luminaries who count themselves as WHA alumni. The NHL saw the WHA as a threat and expanded rapidly to keep WHA teams out of markets. The NHL also absorbed four WHA clubs when the league ceased operations in 1979. The WHA also aggressively recruited European players, of which there were few in the NHL at the time. For players, the WHA offered a chance to revolt against what they saw as the tyrannical NHL and get paid a lot more to play hockey. The WHA exhibit will remain in Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame until June 2014.

There are a number of storylines heading into the CFL regular season, which kicks off June 27. Here are five worth keeping an eye on: The Canadian Press

Hawkins era in Montreal

Argos’ quest to repeat

Dan Hawkins has a tough act to follow as the Montreal Alouettes head coach. Not only does he have no CFL coaching experience, he replaces Marc Trestman, who led the club to a 59-31 regular-season record and two Grey Cup wins over five seasons before being named head coach of the NFL’s Chicago Bears.

The Toronto Argonauts will attempt to win consecutive Grey Cup titles for the first time since 1996-97. Toronto captured the 100th Grey Cup last year with a new head

The Hamilton TigerCats will play their home games in Guelph, Ont., as a new venue is being built where Ivor Wynne Stadium once stood. The Ticats missed the playoffs last year with a 6-12 record, costing head coach/GM George Cortez his job after just one season.

Riders look to keep streak alive

Serving as Grey Cup host has proven quite beneficial the last two years. In 2011, the B.C. Lions beat Winnipeg at BC Place before Toronto dispatched Calgary last year at Rogers Centre. This year’s game will be played at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, which puts the onus on the Saskatchewan Roughriders to keep the home streak alive.

coach (Scott Milanovich) and quarterback (Ricky Ray), and both return with a year together under their belt.

Much change in B.C.

B.C. Lions GM Wally Buono re-signed freeagent receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux as well as QB Travis Lulay, OLs Jovan Oliafoye and Ben Archibald and LB Solomon Elimimian. The most significant move involved Geroy Simon, who was traded to Saskatchewan after 12 seasons in Vancouver.

Messi to face questioning on tax fraud claims Lionel Messi and his father were ordered by a Spanish court on Thursday to appear for questioning in September as part of an investigation into tax fraud allegations. A court in the Mediterranean coastal town of Gava near Barcelona accepted a state prosecutor’s complaint alleging Messi and father Jorge defrauded the Spanish tax office of 4 million euros ($5.3 million US). The Barcelona and Argentina star and his father will appear before Judge Anju Deb Rani in Gava on Sept. 17. That will form part of an investigation to determine whether grounds exist to charge them with tax evasion. If charged and found guilty, Messi and his father could face a fine amounting to 150 per cent of the concealed earnings and between two and six years in prison. The associated Press

Blue Jays still looking up in AL East MLB. They’ve rattled off 8-straight wins, now the immediate road ahead gives Toronto real chance to prove it’s a playoff contender Winners of eight straight and 12 of their last 15, the Toronto Blue Jays have done well these past two weeks, undoing some of the damage wrought by their sluggish start to the season. But it’s the next 10 days that could define their year. Starting Friday, the Jays kick off a 10-game stretch against AL East rivals. After taking on the Baltimore Orioles at home this weekend, the Jays travel through Tampa and Boston on a crucial seven-game road trip. Locked-in left-hander

“It’s an important part of the schedule, no question,” said manager John Gibbons. Not until the final two weeks of the season — when they play 15 consecutive games against divisional rivals — do the Jays embark on such a sustained stretch within the AL East. But those games will be moot if the Jays don’t start

making up ground within their division now. “Yeah it’s important, but every game’s important right now,” said closer Casey Janssen. “I don’t think there’s a certain stretch right now that’s make or break. Yeah, we’ve got to win in our division — it’s the only way we’re going to gain games on these teams — but it’s still early to say these next 10 games

are going to decide our season.” As cliché as it sounds, the Jays are still trying to focus on a game at a time, Janssen said. “We can’t look too far ahead, because the task is tough. But if you break it down and it’s just one night it doesn’t seem as extreme. It’s just, ‘Hey, let’s win tonight and let’s do it again tomorrow.’”

Lawsuit claims Patriots tight end shot man in the face NFL. Controversial week only gets stranger for Hernandez New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, already connected to a homicide victim in Massachusetts, is being sued in South Florida by a man claiming Hernandez shot him in the face after they argued at a strip club. The lawsuit filed late Wednesday by 30-year-old Alexander Bradley comes as police in New England investigate the death of 27-year-old semipro player Odin Lloyd. Lloyd’s body was found in an industrial park near Hernandez’s home in North Attleborough, Mass. Lloyd’s family has said he had some connection to

got into an argument. Later, as they were driving to Palm Beach County, Bradley claims Hernandez shot him with a handgun, causing him to lose his right eye. Bradley did not mention Hernandez in a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office report at the time. Bradley, found shot and bleeding on Feb. 13 in an alley behind a John Deere store, insisted to investigators that he did not know who shot him and gave only a vague description of possible assailants. A store employee found Bradley after hearing a shot outside, but the store’s video surveillance system wasn’t working. The lawsuit does not mention how Hernandez and Bradley are acquainted. Horoscopes

Aries

Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 You have made one concession too many and now you must put your foot down and let others know the free ride is over. You may not want to be aggressive about it but you must make it clear you mean business.

March 21 - April 20 It does not matter if you are qualified to do a certain job. What matters is that you give it a go. You may be surprised to find you are quite good at something you had convinced yourself you’d be bad at.

Taurus

Scorpio

Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 Your confidence is high now that the Sun is moving in your favour again but don’t take foolish risks. Socially, you will be in demand and an invitation of some kind could even lead to a new business opportunity.

April 21 - May 21 You may be baffled by some of the things that have gone on in recent weeks but now they are behind you, put them out of your mind.

Gemini

May 22 - June 21 So you made an error of judgment. You are human like everyone else and make mistakes like everyone else. That you made that error means you at least had the guts to try something new.

Sagittarius

Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 It would appear someone is trying to pressure you into doing something you don’t really care for. No matter how strongly they come at you, don’t give in.

Cancer

Capricorn

June 22 - July 23 You may not see eye-to-eye with someone but that does not mean you are destined to fall out. A lot depends on how willing you are to accept that what they do and say is just as valid as what you do and say.

Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 You won’t be in the least bit shy about telling people what they should be doing today — and if they’re smart they will listen to you and act on your recommendations. You can see more clearly than they can.

Leo

Aquarius

July 24 - Aug. 23 You will change your opinion about something that only a few days ago you seemed so sure about. The problem is that nothing is static, not even your thoughts. Just accept it.

Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 Your attitude towards an issue of some kind will change today. It may even be the opposite of how you thought about it before. In the middle somewhere lies the truth.
