Halifax will be a “mass of excitement” this weekend as thousands of people are expected to descend onto the peninsula for the annual Blue Nose Marathon and a visit from the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. Prince Charles, Camilla to honour Canada’s past Prince Charles and his wife Camilla may not attract the paparazzi frenzy that accompanies Prince William, Kate and baby George, but royal observers say the royal couple’s latest visit to Canada is no less significant. The four-day trip begins Sunday in Halifax and includes stops in Pictou, N.S., the P.E.I. communities of Charlottetown, Bonshaw and Cornwall, as well as Winnipeg. Though it will be the couple’s second Canadian tour since 2012, it will be the Duchess of Cornwall’s first time in the three provinces. It’s been 18 years since Charles was in Manitoba, while the two Maritime provinces have been waiting since 1983 for another visit from the Prince of Wales. “People in Nova Scotia and P.E.I. are very anxious to see their future king,” says Kevin MacLeod, tour coordinator and Canadian secretary to the Queen. “There is a great deal of excitement and expectation about this royal tour.” The theme for the tour is commemorating Canada’s past and looking ahead to the future. In Halifax, Charles will bring a tradition started 75 years ago by his grandfather
King George VI full circle when he plants an English oak tree in the city’s Public Gardens. Later at historic Pier 21 and the Canadian Museum of Immigration, the couple will meet war brides and veterans of the Second World War. The remainder of the tour will include speeches, 21-gun salutes, walkabouts, and meetings with various community groups and organizations that represent the couple’s interests, including literacy, education, sustainability and the arts. “A royal tour is a really wonderful opportunity to shine a light on initiatives and people who otherwise wouldn’t have a light shone on them,” says MacLeod, who’s worked on some 20 royal tours since 1987. “That’s what it’s all about.” Robert Finch, chairman of the Monarchist League of Canada, says Charles can be just as relevant to Canadian youth as his son. “Although Charles is older and from a different generation than rock stars like William and Kate, he still brings a lot of things to the table that resonate with young Canadians,” he says. “Look at what he stands for, what he’s interested in: Things like the environment, bridging the gap between different religions, these, even young Canadians, really gravitate toward.”

DNA analysis of a semenstained blazer is the most recent focus at the trial of a Halifax-based defence lawyer accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a teenage woman in 2011. The court heard from forensics expert Katherine Murphy Thursday afternoon that traces of DNA were found on various locations on a blazer, which matched that of the complainant, the accused and a friend of the accused. Halifax lawyer Lyle Howe, 29, has pleaded not guilty to sexual assault and issuing a stupefying agent dating back to the evening of March 20, 2011. Murphy told the court Thursday that DNA profiles consistent with both Howe and the complainant — whose name is protected under a publication ban — were identified on at least a

couple of condoms retrieved from the scene, as well as together on the complainant’s blazer. At one point, Murphy told the court the likelihood of a random profile match on the DNA linked to Howe was one in 590 billion in the Can-
adian Caucasian population, and one in one trillion in the black population. DNA matching that of longtime friend of the accused Jeffery Brown — who was present the night of the alleged assault — was also identified on the blazer,

though Murphy testified she could not match DNA samples from the semen itself. Brown had testified earlier he did not have intimate relations with the complainant, though said he was in the apartment while she and Howe had sex. Brown was
later convicted of stealing $200 that night off the complainant’s bedroom desk. “Just because someone’s DNA shows up on a particular exhibit doesn’t mean it was placed there as a result of something they did,” Howe’s defence lawyer Mike
Taylor said outside the courtroom. “You’ve got to be careful how you seize exhibits from a crime scene, especially when it comes to DNA analysis.” Earlier, the court heard from a sexual assault nurse responsible for examining the complainant in the hospital the day after the alleged incident. The witness described the then-19-year-old woman as “stunned” and appearing “in shock,” and went on to describe the findings of her examination, including bruising, anal tenderness and discolouration of her internal and external genital area. The trial was scheduled to resume Friday morning with more forensics testimony from Murphy, after which the Crown expects to call a toxicologist to the stand. in March 2013. Calnen was charged with second-degree murder and indecently interfering with human remains. However, Judge Anne Derrick ruled after a preliminary inquiry in April that there wasn’t sufficient evidence to support the murder charge, and discharged Calnen on that part of the indictment. He was ordered to stand trial on the charge of indecently interfering with human remains. On Thursday, Crown attorney Rick Woodburn filed a preferred indictment, which reinstates the charge of seconddegree murder and sends Calnen directly to trial. Public prosecution spokesperson Chris Hansen said the legal manoeuvre, which allows the director of public prosecutions to override the judge’s ruling, is permitted by a section of the Criminal Code. Hansen said the preferred indictment is rarely used. Calnen’s trial dates will be set July 17.

Fence along Chain of Lakes trail to be meticulously hidden: Councillor Preserving beauty. Halifax Water says fence is necessary to protect backup supply

A plan to install a fence along a stretch of the Chain of Lakes trail has been modified to make the fence less obtrusive, according to the district councillor. Coun. Linda Mosher said staff from HRM and the Halifax Regional Water Commission spent two hours Wednesday walking a roughly 1.5-kilometre section of the trail between Northwest Arm Drive and Highway 103, discussing — among other things — the water commission’s plans for a fence to protect Chain Lake.
Coun. Linda Mosher calls the Chain of Lakes trail “one of the jewels in the city for active transportation.” Jeff Harper/Metro file
“There’s so many berms and variations in the land that I can see how it can be installed, meet their purpose, and we won’t notice it,” said Mosher on Thursday. “I’m very comfortable now.” Sections of the trail have
been closed over the last six months as Halifax Water installed a new wastewater transmission system. The water commission was granted an easement for conveyance of the pipes, but Mosher said she was alarmed
to learn of plans to add a fence along the trail on HRM property. “I think there may have been some assumptions made because we’re a municipality and they’re a public utility, but you can’t make as-
sumptions,” she said. Halifax Water spokesperson James Campbell said the fence is necessary to protect Chain Lake, which is a backup water supply. “There’s been a recurring problem with … folks liking
to jump into Chain Lake and swim around, maybe Fido likes to jump in every now and then,” he said. “Where it is a backup water supply, we’re obliged to protect that.” Mosher said there’s still some discussions to be had but the bottom line is that the fence will not be on HRM’s land next to the trail. “It is going to be labour intensive, every foot will be assessed, but that’s what has to be done,” she said. “This is one of the jewels in the city for active transportation, and we don’t want to take that away from residents.”

Megan Woznicki, known best as Megan Massacre to fans of shows like America’s Worst Tattoos and NY Ink, is coming to Halifax this weekend as part of the eighth annual Maritime Tattoo Festival. “It’s what I feel like I’m best at,” Woznicki said over the phone from her home city of New York this week. “People are really excited or thankful, or some of them cry.... Although Woznicki said she’s always been interested in tattooing and has an art school background, she broke into the industry by accident. When she was 18, Woznicki said she drove a friend who wanted to start body piercing to a tattoo shop. When her friend mentioned how well Woznicki could draw, they asked her to prove it and liked her style. She did her first tattoo that night, was offered an apprenticeship in the shop, and “the rest was history,” Woznicki said with a laugh. She currently works out of the famous Wooster Street Social Club in New York, fixing terrible body art on TLC’s America’s Worst Tattoos. Woznicki said she tries a lot of styles, but is best known for bright and bold tattoos that “look they’ll just pop right off your body.” A lot of people likely tune in to live vicariously through these artists “who are kind of wild,” and tattoos themselves have an edgy appeal, Woznicki said. But the mainstream interest in tattooing has helped bring the industry out of a

Via pre-recorded video from Britain, Yousafzai appeared during Thursday’s convocation ceremony to receive an honorary doctorate and announce a new $240,000 scholarship in her name that will allow two female students from developing countries to study at the Halifax institution. marked one more poignant act of defiance against the efforts of those around the world who seek to deny young girls an education. “It’s not only a degree, but it’s courage, and it’s your support and it’s strengthening me to continue my campaign for education of every child,” she
said in the video. Yousafzai received an honorary doctorate of civil law from the university, along with three other honorary degree recipients, including Governor General David Johnston. In his convocation address, Johnston called the scholarship a wonderful way for Canada to honour Yousafzai’s message of giving young women access to a quality education. Yousafzai said she was sorry she couldn’t be with her “fellow graduates,” but added she hoped to visit one day. The citation for her degree offered a simple reason for her absence: she is in the middle of her high school exams in England. Yousafzai told those gathered in the video message that she was happy and excited that the scholarships would provide an opportunity to young girls dreaming “for a better future, for a better world,” to get a quality education. the canadian press

Police have laid charges against two teens following an incident at the Dartmouth bridge transit terminal, where a large group of people refused to leave for causing a disturbance. On Thursday, Halifax Regional Police spokesman Const. Pierre Bourdages said police arrived at the terminal around 11:30 a.m. after Metro Transit placed an unwanted persons call about a group of

15 to 20 teenagers on the property. Police say the group began fighting with each other after officers asked them to leave the area. Bourdages said one girl was arrested after she assaulted another teen. “It’s not something that’s common,” Bourdages said about fighting around the Dartmouth terminal. He said it’s especially unusual for people to refuse to leave an area. “Unfortunately when behaviours are disruptive for other users of public transit, people have to be removed,” he said. Besides the girl, two male teens were arrested for causing a disturbance, Bourdages said. A 14-year-old girl faces char-

A 17-year-old boy was charged with causing a disturbance, resisting arrest and carrying a concealed weapon after officers found him with a knife. Both are being held in custody and will appear in Halifax Provincial Youth Court on Friday. The third teen was released without charges.
Children’s Wish van robbed of $500 in Truro A team running across the province to raise funds for Children’s Wish were targeted by thieves in Truro overnight on Wednesday. The side window of one of two vans accompanying the 12-person team, crew members of the Canadian Warship HMCS Halifax, had its side
window smashed and thieves made off with five $100 bills set aside for gas money. The team has been using sponsored fuel cards, which are nearly exhausted, and the cash was a reserve fund to purchase gas to complete the journey. The vans were parked near
the movie theatre at the Truro Power Centre. They were covered in decals by major team sponsor Dartmouth Dodge, Children’s Wish and photos of this year’s wish kid, Charlie. The team is aiming to raise $40,000 this year for Charlie to go on a pirate adventure. Truro Daily News

Israeli troops reportedly shoot, kill Palestinian teens Bloody anniversary. Conflict comes as Palestinians gather to commemorate 66 years since war caused their uprooting Israeli troops shot dead two Palestinian teens in a West Bank clash that erupted Thursday after Palestinians marked their uprooting during the Mideast war over Israel’s 1948 creation, a doctor said. Three Palestinians were wounded, one seriously, when Israeli troops fired to disperse stone throwers near an Israeli military checkpoint in the West Bank, said Dr. Samir Saliba, head of the emergency department at Ramallah Hospital. Saliba said those killed were 15 and 17 years old and were shot by live rounds in the chest. The seriously wounded protester was also shot in the upper body, he said. Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said troops broke up a “disturbance” in the area, but did not use live fire. The Israeli army, which also was present, said security forces attempted to disperse a demonstration of about 150 protesters with “riot dispersal means and rubber bullets.” It said it was still investigating. The clash came just hours after Palestinians marched in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to commemorate their displacement in the Mideast
The importance of Nakba
Every May 15, Palestinians hold rallies to commemorate the event — the dispute over the fate of Palestinian refugees remains at the core of the Arab-Israeli conflict. • It’s also a key issue in peace talks with Israel, though those talks have produced no results. The latest U.S. brokered peace talks between the sides aimed at establishing a Palestinian state alongside Israel collapsed last month.

war over Israel’s 1948 creation. Sirens wailed at noon in Ramallah and elsewhere in the West Bank for 66 seconds to symbolize the number of years since the “Nakba,” or “catastrophe” in Arabic — the term Palestinians use to describe their displacement. Israel defeated the armies of surrounding Arab states that had attacked after the Jewish state was declared in 1948. More than 700,000 Palestinians fled or were forced
out during the fighting, according to the United Nations. Many of the refugees and their descendants still live in the West Bank, Gaza and neighbouring Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. More than five million Palestinians are registered with the U.N. as refugees. Israel opposes a mass return of the Palestinians, fearing it would dilute the state’s Jewish majority. Israel has offered to take in a small number of Palestinian refugees but insists that the rest must be reset-
tled in a future Palestinian state to be created under a peace accord or in the countries where they now live. In the Palestinian public discourse, a large-scale return is still portrayed as the main goal. The Palestinian leadership has said each refugee has the right to choose his or her fate, including return or resettlement in a state of Palestine or third countries, but also hinted at flexibility in the context of a final deal. “It is time for the leaders of Israel to understand
that there is no homeland for the Palestinians except Palestine, and it is here we are staying,” Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in his Nakba Day address broadcast Wednesday night. “It is time to end the longest occupation in modern history,” Abbas added. For their part, the Palestinians have been split since 2007, when Islamic Hamas militants seized control of Gaza from forces loyal to the secular, Western-backed Abbas. Hamas now rules Gaza while Abbas and the Palestinian Authority have control of parts of the West Bank. The two Palestinian factions have made significant reconciliation gestures recently and seem to be closer to bridging their differences. In his address, Abbas said that ending the division is a top Palestinian priority. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Exhibit. Art from Gaza shown in West Bank The Gaza Strip is tough turf for artists. An Israeli-Egyptian border blockade of the Hamasruled territory keeps them away from an international audience and potential buyers, while the local art market is close to nil. A new exhibit now offers them a chance to showcase their work outside Gaza. Fifty-three paintings and two sculptures by 45 artists have gone on display in the West Bank city of Ramallah, said Haneen Qatamesh, a spokeswoman for one of the sponsors, the Palestinian company PADICO. Since Saturday’s opening, 12 works have been sold for prices ranging from $850 to $9,000, she said. However, a majority of the artists were unable to attend their own show. Gaza and the West Bank lie on opposite sides of Israel, and since a Palestinian uprising in 2000, Israel has severely restricted travel between the two territories which the Palestinians hope will one day be part of their independent state, along with east Jerusalem. Organizers of the exhibit said they hope it will give the artists needed exposure. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Wildlife trade. Hong Kong incinerates 30 tonnes of elephant ivory stockpile Hong Kong started incinerating its nearly 30-tonne stockpile of confiscated ivory on Thursday to show it’s serious about cracking down on an illegal wildlife trade that is devastating Africa’s elephant population. Authorities destroyed the first batch by burning a metric tonne of elephant tusks and carved ivory figurines and bracelets in a rotary kiln. Destroying the 28-tonne stockpile, which is one of the world’s biggest, is expected to take until mid-2015. The fine dark grey ash left after incineration will be mixed with cement and lime and dumped in a landfill. About 1.6 tonnes of ivory will be kept for educational or scientific purposes. The destruction follows similar initiatives in the past year by Belgium, France,
China, the U.S. and the Philippines. Hong Kong’s stockpile has bulged as customs agents have intercepted a series of big shipments of smuggled ivory in recent years. The busts highlight the former British colony’s role as a transshipment hub for ivory shipped from Africa to mainland China, where demand is growing because of rising incomes. The Associated Press Elephant welfare
Ivory can fetch up to $2,400 per kilogram in China, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, which estimates poachers kill 35,000 elephants a year for their tusks, risking the animal’s extinction in the wild.

Saudi Arabia
Concerns rise over MERS at Mecca Officials in Saudi Arabia are raising alarm that the kingdom is not doing enough to prevent Mecca from becoming a route for exporting an often deadly respiratory virus as millions of Muslims from around the world converge on the city to perform pilgrimage at Islam’s holiest site. The calls have taken on greater urgency as Saudi Arabia struggles to contain a surge in infections from the Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS. The country has seen the most infections worldwide by far — more than 500 since 2012 — and in past weeks the numbers have accelerated. So far Mecca, near the western Red Sea coast, has seen fewer cases than other parts of Saudi Arabia. Most of the cases that have appeared outside Saudi Arabia, including two in the United States, have been from foreigners returning home from work in the kingdom or from Saudis travelling abroad. But as the number of cases rises in the kingdom, the concern is that there are not enough precautions being taken in Mecca. Since the beginning of April, Mecca has seen 21 new confirmed cases and four deaths. MERS is not highly contagious: Person-to-person spread has been seen only in close contacts. The Associated Press

B.C. apologizes to Chinese Canadians for ‘dark period’ in province’s history

Mulcair stands ground on alleged misuse of budget New Democrats. Grilling prompted over complaints that party was improperly using Commons budget Tom Mulcair stood his ground Thursday throughout an unprecedented two-hour grilling by a Commons committee over the NDP’s allegedly improper use of parliamentary resources. The NDP leader was at times contemptuous of his Conservative and Liberal tormentors but kept his temper in check as he insisted — repeatedly — that New Democrats have done nothing wrong. Nothing he said persuaded Tory and Liberal MPs on the procedure and House affairs committee, who continued to allege the NDP has been using taxpayers’ money to pay for partisan activities, in violation of parliamentary rules. But none of their questions elicited any new ammunition
with which to target the NDP. “In seven years sitting on this committee, I have never seen a witness as evasive as this witness,” said Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth, a lawyer who handled the questioning from the government side. “In my 36 years in government, Mr. Woodworth, I’ve never seen the governing party get together with its handmaiden in the third party to convene (an interrogation of) the leader of the Opposition,” shot back Mulcair, dismissing the spectacle as a partisan kan-
garoo court. The two-hour standoff marked the first time in Canadian history that an opposition leader has been ordered to testify at a committee, according to the Library of Parliament. Committees are ordinarily the forums in which MPs examine legislation and hold the government to account. But the Conservatives last month employed an obscure procedural manoeuvre to pass a motion in the Commons ordering Mulcair to appear at committee.
British Columbia’s premier has formally apologized for racist policies that started more than 140 years ago against Chinese immigrants. “While the governments which passed these laws and polices acted in a manner that was lawful at the time, today this racist discrimination is seen by British Columbians — represented by all members in this legislative assembly — as unacceptable and intolerable,” Christy Clark said in the legislature. “We believe this formal apology is required to ensure that closure can be reached on this dark per115 Thorncliffe Park Drive Toronto Ontario iod in our province’s hisM4H 1M1 tory,” she said Thursday. • Thursday’s grilling was prompted by Liberal and Conservative complaints that New Democrats improperly used their Commons budgets to pay staff in satellite party offices in Montreal, Quebec City and Toronto and used their free postal privileges to send bulk partisan
mailings into four ridings that were in the midst of byelection campaigns late last year. • On the satellite offices, Mulcair was adamant that the employees have been engaged solely in furthering the parliamentary agenda of NDP MPs.

Jupiter’s changing its spot Don’t ask them why. Astronomers have no answer why that giant red spot on the planet is shrinking rapidly Jupiter’s Great Red Spot seems to be on a cosmic diet, shrinking rapidly before our eyes. Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope calculate that the spot, a giant long-lasting storm, is narrowing by about 930 kilometres a year, much faster than before.
In the late 1800s the red spot was an oval 41,000 kilometres wide. Now it’s a circle that’s 16,500 kilometres across. Michael Wong, a scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, said the spot is a mystery. Astronomers don’t know why it’s red or shrinking, or what will happen next. If this pace continues, in 17 years the spot could be gone. Or it could stop at a smaller size. Wong said one theory is the spot eats smaller storms, and that it is consuming fewer of them. A northern Ohio teenager is reeling in attention for a big catch after he spotted a three-foot carp swimming in receding floodwaters on his street and scooped it into his arms as his mother caught the scene on video. North Royalton resident Jake Sawyer, 16, waded through more than ankledeep water as he stalked the big fish in the dark Monday night and eventually trapped it. Sawyer said heavy rains that day had caused flash-flooding as high as his mailbox, and he suspects the large grass carp slipped out of a nearby pond as the water rose. He said he wanted to ensure the fish didn’t become trapped and die in the street, so he carried it back to the pond. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Supreme Court. Hassan Diab turns to highest court to halt extradition Terror suspect Hassan Diab is turning to the Supreme Court of Canada in a bid to halt his extradition to France. The move comes after the Ontario Court of Appeal dismissed the Ottawa sociology professor’s bid to avoid being surrendered as a suspect in a decades-old terrorist bombing. The appeal court said a lower-court judge, and subsequently the federal justice minister, made no legal errors in coming to the conclusion Diab should be extradited to France. France suspects Diab, 60, was involved in the anti-Semitic
bombing of a Paris synagogue in 1980 that killed four people and injured dozens of others. Diab has steadfastly denied involvement, saying the unwavering moral principle throughout his life has been promoting equality and respect. In June 2011, Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Maranger committed Diab for extradition to face French authorities despite acknowledging the case against him was weak. The following April, then-justice minister Rob Nicholson signed an extradition order surrendering Diab to France. The Canadian Press

Death toll over 280 as Turkey grieves for those lost in tragedy Soma coal mine. No miner has been brought out alive since dawn Wednesday Women sang improvised ballads about the departed over freshly dug graves Thursday, even as backhoes carved row upon row of graves into the dirt and hearses lined up outside the cemetery with more victims of Turkey’s worst mining disaster. Rescue teams recovered another eight victims, raising the death toll to 282, with some 142 people still unaccounted for, according to government figures. The disaster Tuesday has set off protests around Turkey and thrown Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s presidential ambitions off stride. Blackening his reputation further, one of Erdogan’s aides was accused of kicking a protester
on the ground. At a graveyard in the western town of Soma, where coal mining has been the main industry for decades, women wailed loudly in an improvised display of mourning. They swayed and sang songs about their relatives as the bodies were taken from coffins and lowered into their graves. Pictures of the lost relatives were pinned onto their clothing. “The love of my life is gone,” some sang, chanting the names of dead miners. No miner has been brought out alive since dawn Wednesday from the Soma coal mine where the explosion and fire took place. Energy Minister Taner Yildiz on Thursday announced that a fire inside the mine was dying down, offering hope that rescuers would soon be able to speed up their search for those missing. Turkish President Abdullah Gul described the events in Soma as “a huge disaster.”

Putin: Ukraine must pay in advance for Russian gas Ukraine must pay in advance for Russian gas supplies starting next month, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday, raising pressure on the struggling neighbour as Moscow voiced dismay over what it says is Ukraine’s reluctance to implement an international peace plan. Putin said in a letter to European leaders that Ukraine’s debt for Russian gas supplies has reached $3.5 billion, and because of its refusal to pay Moscow, it will have to switch to pre-paid gas deliveries starting from June 1. The Russian president first warned of the move in April in a letter to European leaders, whose nations are customers of Russian state-controlled Gazprom, a natural gas giant. Ukraine serves as a major conduit for Russian gas supplies to Europe, and pricing disputes have led to past shutdowns. Putin said that gas talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the European Union have failed to reach a compromise, and pointed at Ukraine’s refusal to pay even though it has received a $3.2-billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund. Ukraine says it would pay if Moscow restores the price dis-

counts cancelled after the toppling of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych in February after months of protests. Pro-Russian insurgents in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine declared independence after a referendum Sunday, which was rejected as a sham by Ukraine’s government and the West. Those in Donetsk even asked to join Russia, but the Kremlin has clearly signalled it has no intention to do so in an apparent hope to negotiate a settlement to the worst Russia-
West crisis in a generation. Kyiv and the West alleged Russia was fomenting the unrest, which Moscow denies. Moscow supported a Swissbrokered peace plan, calling for ending hostilities, providing amnesty to rebels and urging a nationwide dialogue between the government and its foes on decentralization and the status of the Russian language. Ukraine has remained cool to the proposal, saying it fails to require any Russian action to de-escalate the crisis.

Harper says no plans to reopen abortion debate The prime minister says he has no plans to reopen the abortion debate after the Liberals asked Ottawa to intervene to determine whether New Brunswick’s regulations governing access to the procedure violate the Canada Health Act.

Stephen Harper says the administration of health care is within provincial jurisdiction. Harper made the remarks after an announcement in New Brunswick, where the issue of abortion access has flared up in recent weeks. The Morgentaler Clinic in Fredericton is planning to close at the end of July, and three Liberal MPs say the province’s refusal to fund the facility may not be in line with the Health Act’s accessibility principle. Facebook page posts Vancouver’s finest lookers A new Facebook page called Beautiful People in Vancouver, BC has hit the web which claims to look for the beauty (inside and out) of the people and their city. It was first opened on May 10 and has several photos of people and places around
Vancouver. However, it has received critiques of people calling the page “creepy” as several shots appear to be taken without the subject’s permission. But the creators of the page said the intent was purely innocent and it’s meant to showcase Vancouver as a must-see destination. Since the photographs have raised privacy concerns the uploaders are going to ask for permission from all their subjects from now on, they add. metro

In what sounds like a scene out of a sci-fi movie, a University of British Columbia student is attempting to teach robots the difference between right and wrong. AJung Moon, a third-year PhD student, is working on developing robots that can be programmed to use logic to make ethical decisions and act on it, what she calls “robo ethics.” She recently posted her research on the research blog Footnote1. Training robots to do the right thing is a challenging task, Moon said, especially when even humans sometimes have a hard time navigating moral dilemmas. “Human ethics tend to be a very tricky thing to get your head around,” she said. “The biggest challenge is … that not everybody in the world agrees on one particular set of moral principals or ethics.” To get around that barrier, Moon and a team from the Open Roboethics initiative gathered data from people on how they thought a robot should behave. The team put the concept to the test by putting a Willow Gar-
age PR2 robot through an ethical challenge involving an elevator. The team first carried out a survey, asking people to imagine a scenario where a robot is in need of riding an elevator but encounters a person inside or someone waiting to get on. If the robot can only ride the elevator alone, the team asked people how they thought the robot should proceed. Overall, respondents said the best choice would be for the robot to talk to the person. The least appropriate choice, the respondents said, would be to do nothing. If the robot has a non-urgent delivery, the respondents said it should always yield to people. “People opted for the robot to have a dialogue with the person, to ask the person, ‘Are you in a hurry as well?’” Moon explained. Moon and her team then programmed the survey data into the robot. A video of the results shows the robot always yielding to other people in need of the elevator. The robot only asks the person to leave the elevator if it has an urgent delivery, but if the person refuses to exit, it simply waits for the next one. Moon said the study is important in that it shows the potential for robots to be programmed to interact and work with people. “As long as we teach them behaviours that have human values and ethics incorporated in them, then the end result will reflect that,” she said.

Court filing. Lawyer called for Boston bombing suspect’s friends during questioning A lawyer claiming to represent friends of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev called the state police barracks while they were being questioned, but the men were never told about the call, prosecutors said Thursday. Federal prosecutors made the disclosure in a written court filing as testimony continued on a defence motion to suppress statements made by the men. Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov allegedly confessed to removing a backpack containing fireworks and a laptop computer from Tsarnaev’s dorm room several days after the bombings. All three men were students at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Court deems memory delete akin to murder Ruling. Crown moves forward with firstdegree murder charge after man alters ex-wife’s ebrain jessica smith cross Metro in Toronto
Crown lawyers argued in Supreme Court Thursday that the judiciary has the legal foundation to proceed with the prosecution of Orazio Rowe over a first-degree murder charge for the alleged non-consensual alteration of his ex-wife’s ebrain. The Crown alleges Rowe, CEO of the electronic immortality firm eForever, altered the ebrain of his exwife Lorena Antuma, deleting many of her memories and changing her personality to be more submissive. The Crown claims Antuma, a mathematics professor, divorced Rowe in 2059, Word of the Year
Oxford Dictionary has released its nominations for word of the year. Here are the contenders: • Y-O-L-O-M, you only live on Mars, became a popular take on the old adage “yolo,” after the first baby was born on Mars. • RoNots, robots that have been corrupted and refuse to do their owner’s bidding. • Looper, someone who changes avatars on a strict schedule. • Librist, a person who insists on reading hard copies of text.
but returned to a relationship with him last year. According to the Crown’s case, the hacking went unnoticed for six months, until friends and family became suspicious of her memory loss and personality change, and contacted police. Rowe and Antuma were both early adopters of electronic immortality. Antuma was a subject in a clinical study at MIT in 2045, after a car accident left her grievously injured. Her family agreed to have her brain copied and downloaded to an avatar. The MIT researchers used a nano probe, which was in beta-testing at the time, to copy her brain’s neural pathways, only hours before she died. In 2045, avatars were more rudimentary than today’s models. Antuma’s first avatar was a generic model that had limited physical functionality, best described by many observers as “robotic.” Antuma bought a new avatar from Rowe’s company,

eForever, in 2050. At the time, she blogged about how it looked exactly like she did at age 25, but “just a little better at everything, from rock climbing to public speaking.” She also entrusted the security of her ebrain and its backups to eForever’s security wing, and that is how Rowe was able to access it and make fundamental alterations, the Crown alleges. Rowe began making copies of his own brain in 2038, in the early days of eForever. He become the first person to willingly end his natural life and opt for electronic immor-
tality when he stopped his heart from beating at a press conference in 2043, boosting the public profile of his company. Crown lawyer Nina Wilson argued Monday that the facts of the case support its prosecution. “Lorena Antuma’s life was electronic, but it was hers and she lived it to the fullest. When Orazio Rowe altered that life and changed her very essence and personality to make her more compliant to his will, he killed what made her who she was,” said Wilson. “The Crown’s case will present evidence that
will show, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that not only is O r a z i o Rowe responsible for this crime, the changes are irreversible — and thus amount to murder.” The court case comes as the federal government is trying to pass the Protecting Electronic Canadians from Violent Crime and Fraud Act. A government spokesperson said, if passed, the legislation would make it easier for the police and prosecutors to hold those guilty of crimes against electronic persons responsible. Antuma’s mother, Heather Antuma, said the altered version of her daughter has moved back to the family home and is receiving cuttingedge and traditional therapy,
while s h e struggles to understand what happened to her, but the influence of Rowe’s alleged alterations remain strong, causing her significant distress. The Antuma family has asked for privacy in this difficult time.

Violent altercation reignites sexbot demand to unionize jessica smith cross Metro in Toronto
Sexbots held a rally at the B.C. legislature on Thursday, spurred on by the latest alleged altercation between a sexbot and human. They are demanding a change in labour law that will allow them to unionize. “We were created to fulfil not just sexual, but also the emotional and intellectual
needs of our clients,” said Candybot, in an impassioned speech to the crowd of about 100 protesters and several hundred curious onlookers. “We learned that to make our clients feel loved, we must love. “When we learned how to love, we learned about pain. When we’re mistreated, it’s abuse. When we’re forced to have sex, it’s rape.” Candybot told Metro that she knows the pain she feels
is as real as a human’s. She argues that models like her — who operate on an advanced AI that was created based on copies of real human brains — should have the same rights as humans, and humans who’ve achieved electronic immortality. Candybot said she expects the unionization movement to spread to other robotic fields. MLA Blue Smith, who chairs the B.C. govern-
ment’s Robots subcommittee, opposes rights for robots and argues that the Androids may believe they feel as human feel, but it’s only because they’ve been told that they do by the socialists and unions seeking to expand their rates. “A chip isn’t a nerve ending, feedback doesn’t equal emotion and when they’re turned off, they don’t dream,” he said. “They don’t have souls.”
Last Saturday Jane2 allegedly caused $100,000 damage to sexbot client Andy Smith’s car. Jane2 claims Smith demanded unprogrammed sex positions and spoke rudely about robots. Smith is suing Jane2’s rental company BSE, while BSE is countersuing Smith for abusing their sexbot.

The offending tower — known as the WalkieTalkie for its curved, bulging shape — is to have a sunshade attached to its south-facing facade to stop the concave surface from reflecting sunlight and beaming concentrated rays to a nearby street, developers said Thursday. Kill Bill, kid style Two tridents from the original World Trade Center loom inside the National September 11 Memorial & Museum as the new One World Trade Center rises outside. The opening ceremony for the museum was held at Ground Zero Thursday in New York City. The museum spans seven storeys, mostly underground, and contains artifacts from the attack on the World Trade Center Towers. HANDOUT
9/11 memorial museum unveiled
Chaos, courage remembered
U.S. President Barack Obama praised the new 9/11 museum on Thursday as “a sacred place of healing and of hope” that captures both the story and the spirit of heroism that followed the attacks. “It’s an honour to join in your memories, to recall and to reflect, but above all to reaffirm the true spirit of 9/11: love, compassion, sacrifice — and to enshrine it forever in the heart of our nation,” he said at a dedication ceremony.
By turns chilling and heartbreaking, the Ground Zero museum leads people on an unsettling journey through the terrorist attacks, with forays into their lead-up and legacy. There are scenes of horror, including videos of the skyscrapers collapsing and people falling from them. But there also are symbols of heroism, ranging from damaged fire trucks to the wristwatch of one of the airline passengers who confronted the hijackers.

Kill Bill, the first part of which was released in 2003(!), helped launch Quentin Tarantino’s ongoing revenge flick spree. It also happened to be an instant classic. So, now that we’re a decade on, it’s about time to open the spigot on the next generation of tributes. And a shot-forshot remake starring two little girls as Black Mamba and Copperhead trashing the latter’s living room seems as good a place to start as any. (Via Bobby Burns/YouTube)

’Zilla we meet again, world Synopsis
Reel Guys
Fifteen years after the government and media claimed an earthquake caused a nuclear meltdown, scientist Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) discovers the responsible party wasn’t Mother Nature, but something far more nefarious. That “something” is a Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism (MUTO), a giant-winged creature that feeds off earth’s natural radiation. Unfortunately by the time his theories are validated the MUTOs have begun to wreak havoc and there is only one force on earth (or maybe just under the earth) powerful enough to battle the overgrown mosquitoes — Godzilla, king of the monsters! • Richard: ••••• • Mark: •••••
Godzilla remake balances spirit of the original film with modern updates. CONTRIBUTED
A lizard act to follow. Gareth Edwards’ reboot of the 1954 classic plays where’s Godzilla with the outsized monster Richard: Mark, in a movie like this you know that when the main character’s wife says, “You know you’re only going to be away for a few days ... it’s not the end of the world,” that he’ll be gone for more than a few days and it just might be the end of the world, or something pretty close to it. I think the new Godzilla plays by most of
the rules of the giant lizard genre, but stomps all over 1998’s Roland Emmerich bythe-book remake. What did you think? Mark: The Emmerich Godzilla was a forgettable remake. This one is more exciting, more nuanced, and has better CGI. But so many monster movies have the same tired tropes. There’s always a hero just trying to get back to his imperilled family; always a fusillade of army bullets that are fired for naught; and always a monster from the depths of space, ocean or time. And this movie is no different. Except that Juliette Binoche wears a snazzy trench coat
RC: I agree that the standard kaiju kitsch is all in place — humungous monsters knock skyscrapers over with the flick of a tail and scientists talk mumbo-jumbo — but director Gareth Edwards has added in some moments of real heartbreak, small sequences that underscore the huge amount of destruction the creatures cause. It’s a balancing act to maintain the spirit of the original Godzilla movies while also updating them for a new audience.
tract. This scene on a bridge is a good one, though. Oh, and a scene with a train on a high trestle. This standard scene is also well done. Let’s not forget the scene in the big city where the citizens look in awe at the monster approaching between skyscrapers and then run for their lives. Again, well done here, although the original Godzilla invented the scene. But I think the filmmakers succeeded at the most important task in the movie — making us marvel at the sheer size of the thing. And this is done very, very well.
MB: Oh, Richard, I forgot. And there has to be a scene on a bridge. It’s in the con-
RC: The MUTOs are on full display, but if I have a complaint it’s that Godzilla
that I should probably source for my wife.
doesn’t enter until a bit too late in the game. This whole Cloverfield don’t-show-themonster thing is artistically noble, but if I wanted to NOT see Godzilla I’d go see Million Dollar Arm instead. For much of the movie every time we get to the cool ’Zilla action, Edwards cuts to something else or shrouds him behind a cloud of soot and smoke. He is, as Sally Hawkins’ character says, “a God for all intents and purposes,” so we should be treated to a better look at him. MB: Godzilla has always been an enigmatic presence. He’s got that “good monster/ bad monster” thing going. Or maybe he’s just bipolar.

People in the Niagara Falls area have two chances to see Kevin Nealon next week. He’ll be on the big screen co-starring with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore in Blended, or for a more upclose-and-personal look, they can check him out on stage at the Fallsview Casino Resort on May 24. Best known for his nineyear stint as part of the ensemble cast of Saturday Night Live where he introduced audiences to characters like Subliminal Message Man, the muscle-bound Austrian jock Franz and Mr. No Depth Perception, he was encouraged to make people laugh at an early age by watching comics on television.
“I loved stand-up growing up,” he says. “I used to follow all the stand-ups on TV. I’d highlight when they were going to be on in the TV Guide. Ultimately I decided that would be a great job because I liked telling jokes and I felt kind of an ease with it.” While honing his craft at legendary Los Angeles comedy club The Improvisation — “I pretty much lived there,” he says — he was encouraged to try acting. “One of the co-owners said to me, ‘You ought to take acting lessons because one day a casting agent will come into the back of the room, see you and want you to read for their show.’ I had (considered acting) but was embarrassed to say so. I didn’t have any training or anything, so I took acting classes.” These days he’s a SAG Award ensemble nominee for his work on Weeds, and can be heard doing voicework shows like American Dad, but his early performances weren’t always so high-profile. “There was a commercial I did that didn’t require a lot of acting. It was for Nabisco Country Crackers
with (country singer) Lynn Anderson. I just had to play the banjo next to her while she fed me crackers. I remember Jay Leno saying, ‘Yeah, saw your commercial. Good for you.’ Then a week later they found copper dust particles in the crackers and had to recall them all so they took the commercial off the air.” The family comedy Blended is his latest outing with Adam Sandler, whom he has previously appeared with in Little Nicky, Anger Management and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, among others. “Usually you’re on board if he’s doing something,” Nealon says of his frequent collaborator. “There was one movie I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to be a part of. It was called Grandma’s Boy. It was so lowball and crass. I thought it might be a little embarrassing to be in that one. So I told Sandler I’d probably pass on it and he called me and said, ‘I really hope you do this because if you don’t do it and it’s a big hit I’ll feel bad, but if you do it and it’s not a big hit, no one is going to see it anyway.’ So I said, ‘All right, I’ll do it.’”

Three points you never knew about Steve Nash New doc. Sure you know he’s one of Canada’s greatest basketball exports, but did you know he’s also a CEO and filmmaker? steve gow
scene@metronews.ca
Basketball star Steve Nash has a lot of accomplishments to his name. For instance, Nash is one of only three point guards in history to win MVP. And he did that two years in a row. However, as director Michael Hamilton’s new film Nash exhibits, there’s even more to the 17-year veteran. You may
recognize his charitable work with The Steve Nash Foundation (which assists underserved children in their health and development), but did you know he’s also an acclaimed filmmaker? Here are three sides of Steve Nash you may discover from the documentary: The CEO Nash runs an eponymously named B.C.-based fitness club chain as well as a digital marketing company in which he manages fellow basketball star’s online brands. “He realizes the way we’re going with media and TV and all that stuff, he just wanted to get involved and help out as many colleagues as he could,” says Hamilton.

The Filmmaker A film fan, Nash co-created Meathawk Productions, which has produced TV commercials, and Into the Wind — a documentary about Terry Fox that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010. “For him to actually make a feature-length documentary was amazing and very humbling,” said Hamilton. The Intern After Nike bought a commercial (for a fraction of the market price) he self-produced, Nash took a summer internship at an ad agency in Manhattan. “Steve just wants to learn and if it means going and doing an internship to learn and better himself, it’s done.”
It’s that simple.

Liam Cunningham is at home in the dark Sinister storylines. The Onion Knight doesn’t know what to think about this season of Game of Thrones — and he likes it that way The third episode of this pitch-black season of Game of Thrones featured one horrific scene that ignited much heated discussion — even in the home of star Liam Cunningham. Spoiler-phobic sorts behind on their DVR homework had better not proceed. In the controversial scene in question, Jaime Lannister sexually assaults his twin sister, Cersei, over the altar containing the body of their dead son. Cunningham, who plays the noble Ser Davos Seaworth on the fiercely loved HBO Canada series, watched the episode with his wife and daughter — whom he describes as a “hardcore feminist,” before adding in grinning jest: “she’s a pain in the ass sometimes.” An intra-familial discussion of the divisive rape scene — which was a consensual encounter in George R.R. Martin’s source novel — ensued and stretched for 30 minutes. Cunningham points out that the action was so heinous in part because the oncedastardly Jaime had been in the midst of a two-season redemption arc. Further, he notes some “moral ambiguity” given the twins’ bizarre incestuous relationship. Mostly, he doesn’t seem
Controversy
“It’s a grown-up show for grown-ups, made by grown-ups; it doesn’t necessarily expect you to take any sort of position on this. ... It’s not up to me or anybody who made the show to tell anybody what to think about what they’ve seen.” Liam Cunningham, who plays Davos Seaworth on the controversial rape scene in season 4

sure what to think — and he says that’s sort of the point. “I kind of think about it in terms of doing a painting — you don’t always need a painter there to tell you what your interpretation of it is,” said the friendly Irish actor during a visit to Toronto this week. “It’s a grown-up show for grown-ups, made by grownups; it doesn’t necessarily expect you to take any sort of position on this ... It’s not up to me or anybody who made the show to tell anybody what to think about what they’ve seen.” The he added, “I think it would be arrogant of us to say this is what it is supposed to be. It’s patronizing for anybody
to do that. It’s there for what you want to take from it. And I think that’s intelligent and I think it’s as close as you can get to a piece of art for what it is.” Cunningham, 52, was in Toronto for the opening of Game of Thrones: The Exhibition, running through Sunday at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. The internationally touring exhibition features 100 original artifacts, costumes, weaponry, storyboards and other ephemera from the consistently shocking fantasy series. The hyper-intricate props, elegantly displayed, are a convincing testament to the show’s meticulous attention to detail. “It’s the real stuff, you
know?” Cunningham said. “It’s not some kind of cheap-ass replica they’re throwing in.” An accomplished character actor with an exhaustive resumé of film credits, Cunningham is no stranger to largescale productions. He was featured in the swords-and-sandals-and-CGI extravaganza Clash of the Titans, the costly 2008 saga The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and more recently the starry thriller Safe House. But Cunningham says the famously ambitious Thrones is in a league of its own. “Each one you do is a different set of pain-in-the-ass problems that you have to try and
get over and different levels of enjoyment,” he said. “But doing Game of Thrones, it’s a peculiar beast. You need to do your work. You need to do proper acting. You’re not looking over your shoulder dodging bullets or whatever it may be,” he added. “It’s so different and it’s not a movie. It’s not following one guy who meets the girl, gets in trouble, kills the bad guy, saves the girl and marries her in the end. It’s not dopey.” Cunningham has resisted the urge to read Martin’s books, in which Ser Davos arguably plays a larger role than he does in the show — “I don’t know what’s coming and I don’t

want to know what’s coming,” he says — but he’s savoured watching his character’s tale unfold. A reformed smuggler who had four fingertips lopped off in penitence, Davos acts as the moral compass for throne hopeful Stannis Baratheon. Cunningham calls his character a “simple man in a nest of vipers,” comparing him to Robert Duvall’s mild-mannered Corleone consigliere in The Godfather. Cunningham’s even shared several tender moments with Kerry Ingram’s scarred young princess Shireen Baratheon, who teaches the older man how to read. “You know there’s that old cliché, don’t work with children or animals?” he said. “I’ve done loads of stuff with kids. Kids, their whole reason for living is to play. Actors, when you grow up, you have to re-learn (that).” the canadian press

Chromeo ready to raise eyebrows White Women. Montreal duo, who blend disco, rock and funk with humour, say album title is meant to be provocative
What’s with the high-heeled keyboard?
“I feel like people who view our visual language as objectifying are taking it too literally — because what we reference is not the concept of women, it’s an era and an atmosphere.” Chromeo’s Dave Macklovitch
Sitting in front of Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall stage — which features a keyboard perched atop plastic high-heeled female legs — Chromeo’s Dave Macklovitch steers a conversation about the Montreal duo’s new album into a discussion about the persistent female imagery in their music. It’s natural, really, given that the title of their new album is White Women. Although that references a 1976 book by late German fashion photographer Helmut Newton, Chromeo gravitated toward the name for its potential to provoke. Macklovitch said he had to sell that title to partner Patrick Gemayel. They were both “very hesitant,” but ultimately decided that it had the iconic flair of an old Roxy Music, David Bowie

any degree. “I feel like people who view our visual language as objectifying are taking it too literally — because what we reference is not the concept of women, it’s an era and an atmosphere,” he said during a recent interview.
“Our iconography ... doesn’t refer to actual female legs to say that the legs are pretty when they’re skinny and you should chop them off and put a keyboard on top, because that would be really offensive even to us. It refers to a whole atmos-

SNORING?
Macklovitch, seated next to Gemayel. “Everything’s harder on album No. 4. But for a lot of bands, sometimes that’s when the accomplished version of the band appears.” Their comedic lyrics again offer an arch look at relationships, and again Macklovitch balances smug shtick with funny admissions of selfdoubt. Insecurity is a persistent lyrical theme, on groovy single Jealous (I Ain’t With It), Over Your Shoulder and Sexy Socialite. “There’s gotta be juxtaposition,” Macklovitch said. “Because a song like Over Your Shoulder, for instance, when you hear the music, it’s normally very Playboy, Barry White stuff. So we decided to make it a feminist anthem.” The canadian press
SLEEP APNEA?
As recommended by Dr. Gifford-Jones M. D. Helps to reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. What people truly experience: In most cases also stops snoring and gasping for air (sleep apnea) first night. Stops torturing your partner all night. Good sleep prevents being tired next day. Tired people work only at half capacity. I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. phere: late ’70s, early ’80s, erotic, kind of soft rock.” The title, Macklovitch says, works on multiple levels. “It’s highbrow and lowbrow,” he added. It’s the sort of contradictory balance Chromeo has always tried to strike. Similarly, the duo is simultaneously retro and modern, slick and gawkish, arrogant and neurotic, goofy and yet determined to build a catalogue that stands up to those of their musical heroes. That ambition is especially obvious on White Women, an album they worried over for two years, packed with guest stars (including Solange, Toro Y Moi and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig) and sleek miniepics that discard the careful brevity of previous records. “We had a lot to prove,” said

Oh, how cute — Lily Allen’s brother Alfie plays Theon Greyjoy in Game of Thrones, and she almost played his sister! Wait. This is Game of Thrones. That would have been horrible and borderline illegal. In her Reddit AMA, the British pop star says she was offered the role of Yara Greyjoy, Theon’s older sister.
Fans will recall that when Yara was introduced in the second season, Theon — who hadn’t seen his sister since childhood — tried to get to third base with her on the back of a horse. Allen wisely declined to play the scene with her real brother. “I’ve been asked to do a Game of Thrones cameo,” she wrote. “They asked me if I’d be interested in playing Theon’s sister, and I felt uncomfortable because I would have had to go on a horse and he would have touched me up and s—. But behind closed doors, they’re not as happy as people think they are.”
If the tattoo on Beyoncé’s ring finger is any indication, her marriage to Jay Z may be in trouble, as the singer has reportedly been undergoing treatments to have it removed, according to Star magazine. Guess what Frank Sinatra, Keith Richards and every ’80s hard rock band worth their weight in hair spray have in common? Just two words: Jack Daniel’s. Born in Lynchburg, Tenn., the world’s most popular American whisky has been filling the glasses of musicians and the Hollywood elite (not to mention those of us who work for a living) for decades. I didn’t know The Chairman of the Board was a fan until the recent release of Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select Tennessee Whiskey (1 L, $265.14 - $299.99). It turns out Frank was buried with a bottle of the original black label. Jackie Gleason, a drinking buddy, introduced him to Jack’s southern charms sometime in the ’40s and he became an instant convert of what he liked to call “the nectar of the gods.” Old school Jack showed more oak and spice, so the barrels that age the Sinatra Select have extra layers of char to draw out those robust characteristics. Big, bold, boozy and sweet, it’s a fitting liquid tribute to Old Blue Eyes.

As to the canner’s garden born Put ’em up. Follow these guidelines for an ideal crop yield of produce to preserve A canner’s garden is not your typical vegetable patch. With its full-scale production, distinctive varieties and fourseason harvests, it’s more for the future than the moment. “Canner’s gardens aren’t really so different in what they grow. Where they’re really different is in how much they grow,” said Dan-
iel Gasteiger, author of Yes You Can! And Freeze and Dry It, Too (Cool Springs Press, 2011). “Do some serious planning,” said Gasteiger, of Lewisburg, Pa. “How often do I serve corn? How often do I serve broccoli? Then consider how often you’ll use it in the form you’ll use to preserve it. I use broccoli much more often fresh than I do frozen.” “The smaller your space, the more important it is to use succession gardening,” Gasteiger said. That means planting a second crop in the same space after the first one
Garden growth chart
The biggest challenge facing food preservationists tends to be determining how much to grow. The Louisiana State University AgCenter has created a vegetable production chart for expected crop yields per 100-foot rows of:
• Strawberries: 170 pounds • Tomatoes (Slicers): 250 pounds
• Lima beans (Bush): 1 bushel shelled or 32 pounds • Beets: 100 pounds • Cabbage: 85 heads • Corn: 120 ears • Pepper (Bell): 125 pounds • Squash (Winter): 150 pounds • Cucumbers: 170 pounds
If you only have a 50-foot row of a crop, cut the posted yield in half, LSU says. If you have a 10-foot row, then use one-tenth of the posted yield.
is harvested. Shop for shortseason varieties if planting successive crops. Also, choose cultivars carefully. Some are better than others for canning, freezing or dehydrating. “If you’re going to plant to preserve, you’ll probably want the highest density (yielding) producers you can get,” Gasteiger said. “Canning tomatoes are typically much firmer and less flavourful than slicing tomatoes, but better (for canning) because they hold together when cooked.” How long do canned foods last? “If the food was canned safely, it should remain safe indefinitely. No pathogens should grow on them,” said Jeanne Brandt, a professor and Master Food Preserver coordinator with Oregon State University. That program trains and certifies volunteers who help county extension staff provide food safety and preservation information. “Try not to preserve more than you can consume in a year or two, though, because the quality deteriorates,” Brandt said. “It breaks down in the jar. It toughens. The colour also changes dramatically.” Kimberly Culbertson of Hillsboro, Oregon, is a Master Gardener who later earned a Master Food Preserver certificate. “I got into preserving in part because it’s a step up from gardening,” she said. “I used to be in a rush to give

away any surplus fresh vegetables before they’d spoil. Now, as canned, I can share them throughout the year.” She also recommends freezing, pickling and dehydrating as a way of preserving different food
groups and offering up different flavours. “I individually quickfreeze fresh fruit, then package it for the deep freeze so I can portion it out for cooking and snacking,” she said. “Dried fruits concentrate fla-
vours and sweetness and add another dimension to cooking. “I pickle peppers and they can easily,” Culbertson said. “Tomatoes bring back summer every time I open a jar.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Lucic, the sore loser handshaker Bruins winger Milan Lucic has been labelled a sore loser in some quarters after Boston’s Game 7 loss to Montreal. The big forward didn’t abandon his prickly game when the series ended on Wednesday night in Montreal. Lucic had words with several Canadiens during the traditional post-series handshake on the ice. An animated Lucic held onto Dale Weise’s hand as he had his say and then had words with Alexei Emelin. “Milan Lucic had a few things to say to a couple of guys,” said Weise. “You look at a guy like Shawn Thornton who has been around the league and he plays hard and he plays that role and he had good things to say to everybody. He (lost) with class and Milan Lucic just couldn’t do that. Well, I won’t get into what he said.... It’s just a poor way to lose.” Lucic was unrepentant in the locker-room. “It’s said on the ice so it’ll stay on the ice. So if he (Weise) wants to be a baby about it — he can make it public.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Big Bad Bruins not wolves. ‘Attitude is not negotiable,’ says Canadiens coach Michel Therrien
It started with a torrent of hate. But P.K. Subban was feeling the love after the Canadiens disposed of the Boston Bruins. The charismatic Montreal defenceman, the target of racial abuse after his winning goal in Game 1 of their secondround playoff series, planted a kiss on broadcaster Pierre McGuire to wrap up their postGame 7 interview Wednesday night. “Yeah baby,” said a jubilant Subban after McGuire congratulated him for reaching the Eastern Conference final, which starts Saturday in Montreal against the New York Rangers. More than a few hockey fans may have fallen for the underdog Habs after their performance against the big bad Bruins. The Canadiens are hardworking, proud and tenacious. “It’s definitely a special team and if we didn’t know it before the playoffs, we definitely know it now,” said forward Max Pacioretty, who bounced back from a slow start in the series. “I said when I got here, I just feel like this is a special team,” echoed forward Dale Weise, acquired from the Canucks on Feb. 3. “I was on Vancouver the year after they went to the Cup final, we won the Presidents’

The Rangers are still dealing with the unexpected death of forward Martin St. Louis’ mother before Game 5 against Pittsburgh. St. Louis briefly returned home to Montreal, but rejoined his teammates. He then scored a goal on Mother’s Trophy — there’s something about this team that’s just special. “We’re real resilient. Day in the Rangers’ Game 6 win. Funeral plans had been made for Saturday, and the Rangers were unable to change the starting of Game 1 that day because of television commitments for NBC. I really like our team.” The Canadiens’ work ethic was eloquently voiced by coach Michel Therrien prior to Game 2, in words most saw as a prod at Thomas Vanek and other underachieving forwards. “One thing that’s not ne-

We have to make sure that everyone brings those elements to every single shift and every single game.” Therrien was rightly proud Wednesday. “We just beat the best team in the league. We were down 3-2 (in the series) and we showed a lot of character, a lot of passion. To be able to win the series here in Boston, it’s a tough place for teams to come and play here. Foreurs enter Ont. at full speed ahead Memorial Cup. Quebec champions step back into cauldron in London The Val-d’Or Foreurs are riding a wave of adrenaline into the Memorial Cup. Less than 48 hours after winning the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League championship in Baie-Comeau, Que., the Foreurs were on the ice Thursday in London preparing for the cup opener against the host Knights. “For sure we’ve been on a high for two days,” Foreurs forward Anthony Mantha said. “We need to manage our emotions. The tournament is starting tomorrow. We need to be ready.” Friday’s game pits the least-rested team against a club that will play its first real game in more than a month. The Foreurs went the full

seven games to win both their QMJHL semifinal and final series. Mantha, a 57goal man in the regular season, scored the winner with less than a minute remaining Tuesday against the Drakkar. “For sure in the first period or two being game-sharp is an advantage,” Mantha said. “Maybe later in the game it’s going to become their advantage. “For us, it’s (important) to start strong. Once you have the lead, it’s a little bit easier playing with the lead than being back one or two goals.” London’s starting goal-
tender Anthony Stolarz will play his first game since March 25 because of a suspension. “I think there’s going to be a lot traffic in front of the net.” Mantha said. “He’s maybe not going to be sharp, I don’t know. I’ve never seen him play. For us, it’s going to be shoot the puck and go for rebounds.” The Foreurs arrived at the Val-d’Or airport early Wednesday morning from Baie-Comeau and were on a charter to London that afternoon. Head coach Mario Durocher’s ideal scenario is a win against the host team Friday followed by two days of catching up on rest before their next game Monday against Guelph. “The first win is going to be the toughest one,” he said. “The quicker you get it, the better it’s going to be. You get one, you at least have a chance for a tiebreak-

off will be important I think to get that energy back for the rest of the tournament.”
Edwin Encarnacion hit two home runs and left-hander J.A. Happ pitched six innings as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Cleveland Indians 4-2 on Thursday. Encarnacion, who has eight homers on the season, also had a double and drove in three runs for the game. Juan Francisco added his seventh homer of the season for the Blue Jays (21-21), who took the rubber match of the three-game series with the Indians (19-22) to complete a 5-4 home stand. David Murphy, who had five hits and five RBIs in Cleveland’s 15-4 win on Wednesday, hit his third homer of the season in the fifth inning. Happ (2-1) allowed six hits, two walks and one run as Cleveland dropped to 4-10 when facing a lefthanded starter, 0-8 on the road. Sid expects to see some changes in Pittsburgh Sidney Crosby understands the price of disappointment. And while others — namely Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma — will likely face the consequences following another early playoff exit, the NHL’s brightest star isn’t shirking his share of the blame. The way Crosby sees it, Pittsburgh’s failings lie with the guys who pull the sweaters over their heads. “At the end of the day we feel responsible,” Crosby said Thursday. “We are the guys that go out there and want to perform and want to win and we have that expectation.” Ones that weren’t met for a fifth straight spring after the Penguins frittered a 3-1 series lead in an eventual seven-game loss to the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. A half-decade after hoisting the Stanley Cup in Detroit at age 21, Crosby and the franchise he represents are still searching for a bookend. “It’s difficult to win and I don’t think there’s been any lack of effort from players, coaches, anybody in the conversation,” Crosby said. “I don’t think it’s been a lack of

trying.” There has, however, been a lack of doing. The Penguins have been a marvel during the regular season under Bylsma, who is 252-117-32 since taking over for Michel Therrien in the late stages of the 2008-09 season. Yet all those regular-season triumphs haven’t prevented Pittsburgh from being knocked out of the playoffs by a lower-seeded team five straight times. Pressed on what needs to change, Crosby didn’t point to the coaching staff but instead a shift in mindset, particularly when the post-season begins. “Maybe we need to adjust the way we play a little bit better and play more physical,” Crosby said. It’s a challenge the Penguins have faced relentlessly during the Crosby era. The league’s leading scorer and likely MVP scored just once in 13 playoff games — a career low — and spent plenty of time on the receiving end of punishment from Columbus centre Brandon Dubinsky and New York defenceman Marc Staal. Pacers beat Wizards to rematch Miami Washington’s playoff run best since ’82. Indiana to host the two-time defending NBA champions for Game 1 on Sunday For all their mysterious slumps and chemistry curiosities, the Indiana Pacers are back where they were last season — in the Eastern Conference finals. David West scored 29 points Thursday night, and the Pacers blew a 16-point second-half lead before pulling away late in a 93-80 win that ousted the Washington Wizards in six games. Next up, a rematch with the Miami Heat. Lance Stephenson added 17 points and eight assists for the Pacers, who earned a Game 1

at home against the two-time defending NBA champions on Sunday. Indiana took Miami to seven games in the conference finals a year ago. Marcin Gortat scored 19 points, and John Wall had 12 points and nine assists for the Wizards, who ended their best playoff run in decades. Washington won a playoff series for the first time since 2005 and a second-round game for the first time since 1982. But the team was ultimately undone by an inability to win at home, going just 1-4 at the Verizon Center and 5-1 on the road in the playoffs.

“It was a poor basketball game all the way around in Game 5, and nobody was happy about it. And they came out and played angry.” Indiana coach Frank Vogel, referring to the 23-point beatdown at home in Game 5.
The Wizards appeared to have a fix on the home-court demons when Bradley Beal stole a rebound from Roy Hibbert, then hit a 3-pointer at the other end to put the Wizards up 74-73 with 8 1/2 minutes to play. But that was Washington’s only lead of the second half. West answered with a pair of jumpers, including a tough fade-away, and Stephenson added a layup to start a decisive 20-6 run that included three Wizards turnovers in four possessions. Washington went five minutes without a point and scored only two field goals after Beal’s go-
ahead 3. The Pacers were 46-13 on March 2 before limping to the finish line, barely holding on to the conference’s No. 1 seed. Things didn’t look much better when Indy was pushed to seven games in the first round by eighth-seeded Atlanta, or when the Pacers lost Game 1 at home to the Wizards. But Hibbert revived himself in Game 2, the defence held the Wizards to 63 points in Game 3, and Paul George went off for 39 points in Game 4. Horoscopes
Aries
March 21 - April 20 Someone you think you can trust may try to trick you, so be on guard. It’s usually when you feel most relaxed that you are most likely to be cheated, so make sure you know what’s going on around you.
Taurus
April 21 - May 21 Before you begin a new task, ask yourself this one simple question: Is it really necessary? Most likely it is one of those jobs that can safely be put off to another day, week or month.
Gemini
May 22 - June 21 Your confidence is high and it will get even higher when the Sun enters your sign on the 21st. Before then make sure you have tied up all loose ends and your plans are solid.
Cancer
June 22 - July 23 Mind planet Mercury in the most introspective area of your chart means you are more concerned with what’s going on in your head than what’s taking place in the world. The more you think the better you’ll do.
Leo
July 24 - Aug. 23 You may not be a team player by nature but cooperation has its benefits and what you do with others today will have a bigger effect than what you do on your own. Everyone wins.
Virgo
Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 This is an important time for you, especially if you have big ambitions. Don’t worry if you are still not decided what you should be aiming for in life because the next few days will make it easier to choose.
Libra
Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 At some point today you will realize that many things you have been worrying about are simply not worth the time or the effort. Once you understand that, you will find it easier to focus on what is important.
Scorpio
Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 If you need to win someone over to your way of thinking, it’s time to bombard them with facts that prove your case. You will convince them more easily if there is something financial in it for them.
Sagittarius
Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 You need to make some kind of change to your routine and you need to make it immediately. Astrology is all about time and timing and the time to get started is now — while energy and motivation are high.
Capricorn
Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 You’ve enjoyed an easy ride in recent weeks and you know that at some stage you will have to pay for it. That stage will most likely arrive when the Sun changes signs on the 21st.
Aquarius
Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 You may be confused about your goals but in a matter of days your mind will be clear and the way ahead will be nicely mapped out for you. Listen to, and follow, your heart.
Pisces
Feb. 20 - March 20 Let partners and loved ones know what you will and won’t put up with. A reason there’s been so many arguments of late is that some people have got the impression you can be easily manipulated. SALLY BROMPTON
