Joe Ramia, whose Argyle Developments Inc. is behind the Nova Centre, said he wants the complex to fit into the surrounding area effortlessly despite the fact that it will take up two city blocks. “We want Argyle (Street) to be seamless on both sides of the street,” Ramia said. The complex will feature a hotel, an office and retail space, and a convention centre. The original design plan was adjusted following a public consultation process that Ramia said was costly but ultimately helpful. Committee member Louis Lamoine and others worried that the side of

Other members questioned the developers about their commitment to following through on promised green spaces. There is also a two-week window for appeals of the committee’s decision, though Ramia said he didn’t expect that to slow down above-ground construction he hoped would begin “in less than a month.” Absent some sort of unexpected twist, it appears as though it’s full steam ahead for one of the biggest projects downtown the city has ever seen. “This was a big hurdle to cross, essentially the final one, so we’re very happy,” Ramia said.

More than two kilometres of roadway will be closed this Sunday when cyclists, skateboarders, dancers and musicians take over Dartmouth to get residents seeing “their streets in a new way.” Switch: Open Street Sundays is returning to Dartmouth this weekend for the second time, and organizer
Ross Soward of the Planning & Design Centre is hoping around 2,000 people will turn out. “It’s a great way to kind of feel ... pride about the city and who we are,” Soward said Thursday. About 2.5 kilometres along Portland Street, Lake Banook, Sullivan’s Pond and Prince Albert Road will be closed from 12 to 4 p.m. Sunday for dozens of activities such as Zumba, yoga, drumming, juggling, henna and a pig roast. Soward said Lake Banook activities have expanded this year with food trucks, the Halifax mobile skate park, and a mobile bike unit, where
people can rent bicycles for free. There’s also a scavenger hunt through Portland Street businesses, a bubble bicycle, exercise classes and DJs along the route. The Multicultural Association of Nova Scotia is hosting a street party with dancing and music on Portland Street, and Halifax Regional Municipality’s Bike Week is a partner. Soward said it all shows Switch is closer to becoming a summer staple. Soward said he would like to see HRM become more of a partner, because until now his group has had to track down grants and sponsors to cover the cost of road closures.

A full list of activities can be found on the Switch Hfx Facebook page.
“We really want HRM to ... see it as a community event that has major benefit,” Soward said. Most arts and culture events have been focused on the Halifax peninsula in the past, Soward said, so Switch helps demonstrate “the rising of Dartmouth.” “More and more there’s a lot of energy and interest around doing cool stuff in Dartmouth,” Soward said.

His vehicle was found a couple of hours later at Crystal Crescent Beach Provincial Park in Sambro, but there were no sightings of the man himself. Halifax Regional Police Const. The Halifax-area park was closed to the public all day as the searchers, helped by two helicopters and a Coast Guard ship, laboured to cover the “vast area.” “It’s a big area to cover ... it’s coastal as well,” Bourdages said. Bourdages said police “really don’t know” what happened to Brannen, but do not believe he met with foul play. Police will now treat the file as a missing persons case. Brannen is described as a white man, 5’8, 175 pounds with short grey hair and beard. He was last seen wearing glasses, a beige leather bomber-style jacket, a button-up shirt, blue jeans, black leather dress shoes and a black rimless baseball hat. Anyone who has seen Brannen since Wednesday morning or has information on his whereabouts is asked to contact police at 490-5020.

Nova Scotia’s premier reiterated Thursday his government’s intention to clean up pollution in Pictou County’s Boat Harbour as aboriginal protesters continued a blockade near a broken wastewater pipe leading from the local paper mill. But Stephen McNeil also held his position that a cleanup can’t proceed until the province finds out exactly what’s in the effluent and gets a better idea on how much it would cost to remediate the site. “We’re sincere about trying to deal with this issue and move forward on it but we need a starting point,” said McNeil. “I would have preferred that information was available, but it isn’t and we are acting appropriately.” The province has said the most recent data it has on the site dates back to 1995 and it has to be updated. McNeil’s comments come as protesters from the Pictou Landing First Nation vow to continue blocking access to the broken wastewater pipe leading from the Northern Pulp paper mill until they get a commitment on a cleanup of Boat Harbour. The blockade went up Tuesday after the band council

Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia. Judicial review filed in Supreme Court over changes made to project’s design Braedon Clark

With the design plans of Halifax’s new convention centre set to pass final regulatory hurdles, a local group has turned to the courts to expose what they call preferential treatment for the project. The Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia has filed a request for judicial review with the province’s Supreme Court, seeking to quash the April 29 regional council vote that authorized three changes to the convention centre’s design: the size and shape of the towers, the

decision to move the ballroom above ground and the closure of part of Grafton Street. The Grafton Street sale was approved during a closed-door meeting at city hall this week, though details won’t be made public until the deal is finalized. Developer Joe Ramia said the design changes were a result of public consultation, but the judicial review filing alleges that the municipality breached its own charter and bylaws, “acted unfairly, arbitrarily or in bad faith,” and “was biased in its decision-making.” Heritage Trust’s Phil Pacey
said lawyers won’t meet on the issue until late June or early July, but he was confident that a judge would agree with his group’s position. “I’m optimistic,” Pacey said. “We have strong ground to stand on.” Pacey cited several issues that he objected to with the convention centre’s design, chief among them a lack of realism in how the Nova Centre will interact with the surrounding area. “All of the mock-ups of the building are from the perspective of some area floating in space,” he said. “We haven’t seen how it will compare to the rest of the area on a proper scale.” The Heritage Trust is not seeking to stop the project completely through an injunction, just to reverse the changes that arose from the April 29 meeting. Partial victory for residents in fight on stormwater fee Utility and Review Board. Regulator rules onus is on Halifax Water to prove fee is justified haley ryan
haley.ryan@metronews.ca
A Hammonds Plains resident said she’s “very pleased” the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board (UARB) decided Halifax Water must prove whether a property owner benefits from stormwater services. Pamela Lovelace said the next step is a “smarter approach to taxation in Halifax.” Lovelace submitted a petition to the UARB signed by more than 1,500 people angry
over the Halifax Regional Water Commission (HRWC) billing non-customers for a stormwater service fee approved last April. The new ratepayers are also unhappy with an appeal process in which homeowners had to prove they didn’t benefit from the service. On Wednesday, the utility ruled that the onus was “incorrectly placed” on the resident, who was required to pay for a professional engineer to assess their property. “I am very pleased that the UARB said, ‘This is wrong and we’re going to fix it,’” Lovelace said Thursday. Halifax Water has said the fee is not new, but states that residents in the urban core have been subsidizing stormwater infrastructure for years, while those in suburban and

rural areas used the system of ditches and culverts for free. Lovelace said charging nonHRWC customers for a service they don’t get is like an Internet provider saying, “You could have accessed our Wi-Fi, so you’re going to get a bill.” More than 2,800 residents have now appealed the fee. HRWC spokesman James Campbell said 95,000 people were billed, making the commission’s billing “pretty accurate.” Campbell said the water commission has until June 25 to appeal the decision, and it’s “hard to say” what they will do.

Citing security reasons, the U.S. has intervened in routine state public-records cases and criminal trials regarding use of the technology. This has resulted in police departments withholding materials or censoring documents in rare instances when they disclose anything about the purchase and use of such powerful equipment. We value our privacy but aren’t proactive in preserving it Canadians are more concerned about their online privacy than many of their global counterparts and yet they’re also less likely to take proactive measures to secure their personal information, suggests a new study. Nearly two-thirds of Canadians polled said they believed they had less privacy online than they did a year ago, according to a report by the IT company EMC, which conducted online surveys with 15,000 web users in 15 countries. Globally, the average was 59 per cent. Canadians were the secondleast likely to say that they’d be willing to trade some of their privacy for “easier access to information and knowledge,” behind only the German-born respondents. About 85 per cent of the Canadians polled said they believed it will become more difficult to cling onto a safe degree of privacy online in the next five years, versus 81 per cent of
all respondents. But Canadians admitted they could do more to protect themselves on the Internet. Nearly seven in 10 said they did not regularly change their online passwords, versus the overall average of 62 per cent. One in three said they didn’t worry about changing their privacy settings when joining social networks, which was in line with the global average. And about four in 10 said they didn’t have a password protecting their cellphone from being accessed, compared to 39 per cent of all the respondents. Superstars join fight against wartime rape Ending ‘culture of impunity.’ Brad Pitt joins Angelina Jolie at London summit tackling sexual violence in conflict zones Brad Pitt joined Angelina Jolie at a London summit on sexual violence Thursday, lending the
couple’s star power to the campaign to end rape in war zones. The four-day London conference is organized by British Foreign Secretary William Hague and Jolie, a United Nations special envoy. They hope representatives of the more than 100 countries present will back a new protocol laying out how sexual violence in conflict zones should be investigated and prosecuted.
TOYOTA FACTORY
EVENT
They say they want to end the “culture of impunity” for wartime sex crimes. Billed as the biggest-ever summit on the subject, the gathering has drawn diplomats, officials, charity representatives and survivors of wartime rape. Jolie said the meeting, which ends Friday, was being held “for all the forgotten, hidden survivors who have been made to feel ashamed or been
abandoned.” “And for the children of rape — we want the whole world to hear their stories and understand that this injustice cannot be tolerated, and that sorrow and compassion are not enough,” she said. Hague and Jolie have made an odd but effective double act as they’ve campaigned against sexual violence for the past two years. the associated press

N.L. Sealers blame thick ice, blocked markets for drop in landed pelts The Canadian Sealers Association blames heavy sea ice and trade issues for a big drop in the commercial hunt off Newfoundland this spring. Executive director Frank Pinhorn says just fewer than 55,000 harp seals were landed, compared to 91,000 last year and 69,000 in 2012. Pinhorn says about 65 boats went out compared to 45 the year before but many had trouble getting through unusually thick sea ice. He says the number of seals landed was far below the federal quota of 400,000 while the price held steady at about $35 for the best pelts. The association is calling on Ottawa to more aggressively deal with seal product bans that block access to markets in several countries. the canadian press Bay of Fundy

Toronto Zoo watches for signs of panda pregnancy
A humpback whale was untangled from lobster fishing gear in the Bay of Fundy earlier this week. Mackie Greene of the Campobello Whale Rescue Team says five members of his group and federal Fisheries officers travelled about 80 kilometres offshore from New Brunswick’s Campobello Island to reach the whale on Tuesday. Greene says the group freed the nine-year-old whale from ropes attached to lobster fishing gear. He says his group has rescued about 26 whales since it started operating in 2002.
The Toronto Zoo says it’s monitoring one of its giant pandas for signs of pregnancy following artificial insemination. Er Shun, one of the pandas on loan to Canada from China, was artificially inseminated in April, but the zoo says pandas’ long gestation period makes it hard to know if it worked. It says staff will only find out about 20 days before Er Shun is set to give birth, and they’re preparing her for an ultrasound. The male panda, Da Mao, is too young for breeding, so sperm was flown in from China for the procedure. the canadian press

World Cup revelry matched by rage Turmoil in host cities. Black Bloc adherents infect crowd angered by billions spent on sport Protesters and Brazilian police clashed in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and at least three other World Cup cities on Thursday, around the first match of soccer’s premier event. Just after the match started, about 300 protesters marched along Rio’s Copacabana beach to denounce lavish spending on a sports tournament in a nation with profound social needs. The protest was peaceful, but there were worries that could change as adherents to the anarchist “Black Bloc” tactic were seen in the crowd. Violence did break out elsewhere. In Sao Paulo, more than 300 demonstrators gathered along a main highway leading to the stadium. Some tried to block traffic, but police repeatedly pushed them

back using tear gas and stun grenades. A few protesters suffered injuries after being hit by
grenade exploded near him. CNN reported on its website that two of its journalists were also injured.
“We’re in a country where the money doesn’t go to the community, and meanwhile we see all these millions spent
on stadiums,” said student Tameres Mota, a protester at the Sao Paulo demonstration. Meanwhile, about 300 protesters gathered in central Rio de Janeiro; police took a few into custody. In Belo Horizonte, about 200 clashed with police, some smashing doors and windows. About 1,000 gathered in Porto Alegre, with some breaking property and hurling stones, authorities said. Police scattered about 150 protesters in the capital city of Brasilia, according to a local newspaper. The Associated Press

Preliminary autopsy findings show that a Palestinian teen killed during a lull in a West Bank confrontation between stone-throwers and Israeli troops was shot dead by live ammunition, two human rights groups said Thursday. The Israeli military has denied use of live ammunition in the May 15 incident, insisting troops only used rubber-coated steel pellets, a standard means of crowd control. Troops are permitted to use live ammunition only in life-threatening situations. Two 17-year-old teens, Nadim Nawara and Mohammed Salameh, were killed that day, during intermittent confrontations between several dozen Palestinian stone-throwers and Israeli troops on the outskirts of the West Bank town

of Beitouniya. The teens were killed in the same spot but more than an hour apart. Their deaths drew worldwide attention in part because their final moments were captured by security cameras. In each case, the footage showed the teen walking in the street, a few metres from a wall where others were taking cover. The Israeli human rights group B’Tselem said at the time the teens posed no threat to soldiers, raising “grave suspicions” that they were victims of wilful shootings. the associated press

Businessman’s grave ransacked Three people, including a daughter, are accused of ransacking the grave of a U.S. businessman in search of his “real will,” only to find a pack of cigarettes in his hand. Eddie Nash died of a heart attack in 2004 at age 68. His cemetery vault in New Hampshire was found cracked last month, the casket opened and his remains searched. The body was left intact.
An arrest affidavit names Ginette Dowse, 71, Michael Day, 37, and Nash’s daughter, Melanie Lynch, 52. Lynch had made comments about her father being buried with “the real will,” police said. The wait is over. Brazil kicked off the 2014 FIFA World Cup with a football-style Carnival before thousands of dancing yellow-clad fans, who seemed eager to put construction delays and protests behind them. To get you in the game, Metro has you covered with the latest from Brazil.
Will soccer outshine the protests?
J-Lo helps World Cup kick off in style Singers Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull and Claudia Leitte perform during the opening ceremony of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil before the Group A match between Brazil and Croatia at Arena de Sao Paulo on June 12, 2014 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Brazil takes cup for sticker shock What things cost in Brazil
Brazil protects its local industries by charging high tariffs on imported goods. The iPhone 5s costs $649 in the U.S. but has a starting price of $1,250 US in Brazil. A pepperoni pizza will cost you $35 in Brazil. Brazil’s $6.28 Big Mac is among the most expensive in the world.
World Cup visitors, welcome to Brazil, land of soccer, sun and sky-high prices. Unlike nearby Latin American nations where a tourist’s U.S. dollar or European Union euro seemingly stretches forever, Brazil is astoundingly expensive. If one’s budget isn’t immediately busted by the flight or the hotel, it will soon be done in by the $10 US caipirinha cocktail and the $17 cheeseburger. And those are the prices city-dwelling Brazilians saw even before the World Cup set off a new standard of sticker shock. The dizzying prices are referred to here as the “Custo Brasil,” or “Brazil Cost” — the mixture of high taxes and steep import tariffs, combined with bad infrastructure, a dose of inefficiency

“Prices in Rio are absurd. I still like it … but it’s not paradise.” Maria Anda, a Norwegian artist who has lived in Brazil for a year.
and a thick shot of bureaucracy. Demand leading up to a big event like the World Cup naturally raises prices. But, since costs already were high to begin with, tourists should prepare to dig deeply into their wallets and not be too miffed to receive goods or services of inferior quality, said Rafael Alcadipani, a business administration professor at the Getulio Vargas Foundation, Brazil’s top think-tank. “Anything you buy in Bra-
zil will be more expensive than in the United States or Europe, but the quality is going to be worse,” he said. Hotel rates in many of the World Cup host cities more than doubled ahead of the tournament. Massachusettsbased TripAdvisor reports visitors to Rio will face the highest prices, with hotel rates averaging $445 per night. Even the more affordable host cities will set travellers back a good amount: $457 per day in Cuiaba and $477 in Sao Paulo. “The Cup prices are ridiculous. Everything shot up. The only thing you can buy in Brazil is a bikini, a cachaca (Brazilian sugar cane liquor) and a pair of Havaianas (sandals),” said Gillian Santos, a Brazilian who now lives in Belgium. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
The sun rose Thursday on a tropical nation hosting its first World Cup in 64 years. Nearly half the world’s population, well over three billion spectators, are expected to watch soccer’s premier event and get a glimpse of the country that in two years will host the Summer Olympics. But just hours before play was to begin, it still wasn’t clear which Brazil we would see. Would it be the irreverent nation known for its festive, freewheeling spirit? Or would it be the country that, for the past year, has been a hotbed of fury over poor public services, discontent over a political system widely viewed as corrupt, and deep anger over the $11.5 billion US spent on hosting the World Cup? “The world is going to see multitudes cheering for soccer — but also demanding that our country change,” Helen Santos, a school teacher, said as she walked home
in Rio de Janeiro. “The world needs to see that we’re a serious country. We’re not just a nation of soccer, but a country striving and demanding the government provide better education and health care. The world needs to see the reality of Brazil, not just the sport.” Street protests have lessened in size since last year, when Brazilians staged raucous rallies against the government, overshadowing the Confederations Cup soccer tournament. For two weeks, dozens of places were roiled by unrest. Whether Brazilians have moved past such disruption is uncertain. “I hope the soccer outshines the protests, but I also know there remains a climate of anger,” said Edson Carvalho, an office assistant watching 10 barefoot young men play a pick-up soccer match in Rio’s Botafogo neighbourhood. The justices ruled 8-0 that Pom can go forward with a lawsuit alleging the label on a “Pomegranate Blueberry” beverage offered by Coke’s Minute Maid unit is misleading because 99 per cent of the drink is apple and grape juice. Lower courts had ruled in favour of Coke because the label conforms to the law and to Food and Drug Administration rules. But the Supreme Court re-
versed, finding that the juice label may technically comply with FDA rules but may still mislead consumers for different reasons. Writing for the court, Justice Anthony Kennedy said federal FDA laws and trademark laws complement each other in the regulation of misleading labels. He said it is unlikely Congress intended FDA law to preclude all trademark actions in the food and beverage arena because that would mean “less policing” of misleading labels than in other industries.

Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz still believes the housing market is due for a soft landing but warns: Look out if it crashes. The central banker made the assessment after the release of the latest semi-annual financial system review, a kind of stress test on financial weak
spots that suggests a crash in Canada’s real estate market would have devastating impact on the economy. And such a crash could be triggered by a number of events — a recession that causes widespread unemployment, rising interest rates and even global shocks like failures in China’s opaque shadow banking system. All such events would dampen growth and cut demand and prices for Canadian resource exports. Still, Poloz told reporters at a news conference following the release of the report Thurs-
day that he believes the worst won’t happen. “We still are pretty confident ... that we will achieve a soft landing in housing,” he said. “It’s vulnerable but not risky.” Deputy governor Carolyn Wilkins says data backing the soft landing scenario includes a slowdown in housing starts, cooling in the construction of condos and the plateauing of household debt ratios, although at levels near those that existed prior to the U.S. meltdown in 2008. Augmented reality goes old-school ANDREW FIFIELD
Pothole vigilantism goes artsy The perfect pothole might not exist for many people — but for artist Jim Bachor, it’s one with a nice oval shape. Bachor began filling potholes a little more than a year ago, after one in front of his house became a hassle. He doesn’t just fill them with cement, though. He’s turned pothole-filling into a public art project. He fills them with mosaics. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Public art, practical outcome While his art isn’t a permanent solution to the problem, it’s at least a small fix, he says. The city hasn’t shut down his project, and some community members have expressed gratitude. Gerry Shaheen says Bachor and his crew are welcome anytime to fill potholes in his city. “I’ll pave the way for them,” Shaheen said with smirk. “No pun intended.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Two is better than one Synopsis
Reel Guys
The 21 Jump Street high school undercover cops Schmidt and Jenko (Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum) are back, but this time they’re narco cops. That is until they botch an investigation into drug lord Ghost’s (Peter Stormare) operation. Their failure gets them demoted back to the 22 Jump Street (they moved across the road) program. Jump Street’s Captain Dickson (Ice Cube) sends them undercover, as unlikely brothers Brad and Doug McQuaid, to college to arrest the supplier of a drug named WHYPHY (WiFi). The bumbling, but self-confident duo infiltrates the college, but campus life threatens to blow apart their partnership. • Richard: ••••• • Mark: •••••

Jump Street. Tatum and Hill’s second outing as bumbling cops takes self-aware jabs at the business of sequels Richard: Mark, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are producers on the new Jump Street film, which, I guess, explains all the jokes about how much everything cost. At one point Hill actually says, “It’s way more expensive for no reason at all.” I don’t know how much the movie cost to make,
but the self-aware jokes did make me laugh even though it is essentially a remake of the first film, with a few more Laurel and Hardy slapstick gags and amped-up explosions. What was your take? Mark: Richard, I liked this instalment way more than the previous outing. I loved all the self-referential gags, including the brilliant end-credits that hilariously make fun of the inevitable sequels that will follow. I credit the directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, for the knowing pop culture sophistication they brought to the film.
They directed the first one, too, but they’ve grown more confident since their Lego Movie hit, which also tweaked the audience’s expectations in a similar way. RC: The end credit sequence, which maps out the next sequels from number 3 to installment 43 — they go to Beauty School and Magic School among other places of higher learning — is probably the funniest part of the movie. The stuff that comes before is amiable, relying on the Mutt and Jeff chemistry of Hill and Tatum for laughs. It’s boisterous and aims to please, but best of all are the self-referential jokes.
By clowning around about the difficulty in making the sequel better than the original, they’re winking at the audience, acknowledging that this is basically a spoof of Hollywood sequels. It’s subversive, meta and kind of brilliant. MB: Yep. Because I can see explosions and pratfalls in any “action comedy”; it’s the subversive stuff that makes this movie stand apart. The intergender fight sequence between Jonah Hill and Jillian Bell (who is incredible throughout the film) is as subversive a take on sexual politics and
“rape culture” that you will ever find. It’s these kinds of scenes that kept me laughing through the picture. The black stoner twins, played expertly by The Lucas Bros, were a masterpiece of writing and comic timing. RC: I agree, but ill-timed jokes about Maya Angelou and Tracy Morgan were sore thumbs for me, but that’s more coincidence, I guess than bad taste. MB: I don’t think those jokes were deliberate, but they sure broke the spell for me. But then Ice Cube’s comic rants got me back.

Pedro and ligers and tots, oh my! Gosh! Ten years after cracking us up as Napoleon Dynamite, Jon Heder reflects on the movie that launched his career Of all the memorable lines in Napoleon Dynamite, the quirky comedy that introduced the world to “ligers” and “Vote for Pedro” T-shirts, there is one that gets hollered at star Jon Heder more than any other. “Tina, you fat lard, come get some dinner,” says Heder, easily adopting Napoleon’s indignant, breathy voice after all these years. The line — directed at his grandmother’s pet llama, Tina — perfectly captures the offbeat tone of the 2004 film. Made for just $400,000, the movie was picked up by Fox Searchlight and Paramount after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival and made $46 million worldwide. Heder, now 36, celebrated the film’s 10th anniversary this week with other cast members in Los Angeles, where a statue of Napoleon was unveiled on the Fox Studios lot. In a phone interview with The Canadian Press, he said the film’s cult following continues to this day. “I think people really related to Napoleon, whether they felt like him growing up or knew someone like that,” he said. “Even though it’s kind of overthe-top and funny, he’s trying to get skills, he’s trying to fig-

ure out what he’s good at and everyone can relate to that.” The bizarre comedy set in a rural Idaho town follows Napoleon, a frizzy-haired teenager with a permanent slack-jawed expression, and the unusual characters around him: his shrimpy brother Kip; footballobsessed Uncle Rico; and shy, crafty friend Deb, played by Tina Majorino. Director Jared Hess took inspiration from his own rural upbringing while writing the
film with his wife, Jerusha. His brothers even worked at the chicken farm where Napoleon toils, and the llama actually belonged to his mother — although her real name was Dolly, not Tina. “After the film screened for the first time at Sundance, my mom came up to me afterwards and said, ‘Well, that was a lot of embarrassing family material,’” said Hess with a laugh. “The character of Napoleon, especially — I come from
a family of six boys and just about everything that is said in the film or happens in the film, my brothers either said or experienced firsthand.” Hess wrote a short film featuring the Napoleon character about a year and a half before the feature. He was struggling to find the right actor to play the central role, before he remembered Heder from one of his classes at film school. “I acted out for him the voice and some of the manner-

isms of how he was supposed to sound and look, but then Jon took it and ... he just became the character and totally brought him to life,” Hess said. When Heder read the script for the short film, he said he immediately identified with the Napoleon character because he also grew up in a big family of boys. “I got it right away,” Heder said. “I knew exactly who that person was because so much of Napoleon was in my younger brothers and in myself. We had very similar experiences. I loved it. I was like, ‘This is genius.’” Neither expected the film to go on to be a smash hit or attract a cult following that has lasted a decade. Heder, who later appeared in the Will Ferrell comedy Blades of Glory and Kristen Bell romance When In Rome, said that at first he struggled with the spotlight. “Getting recognized, I got used to it, but it was weird. It changed everything. I’ve forever got this thing — it can either be a cloud or a rainbow — just hovering over you that is the movie Napoleon Dynamite,” he said. Asked whether he ever gets tired of being so closely associated with one character, Heder said: “I would, if I really didn’t
like him. “But I love the movie. I’m so blessed that it was my first film,” he added. “It’s very close to my heart ... I was kind of moving on with my life (at that time). I got married. I was starting my career, and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to do it.” Over the years, the film has spurred countless fan tributes — a YouTube search for “Napoleon Dynamite dance” reveals just how many people have dutifully learned and recreated Heder’s improvised boogie to Jamiroquai’s Canned Heat. But Heder says the strangest fan request he ever received happened while he was speaking at a college several years ago. A fan wanted Heder to recreate a scene where Uncle Rico throws a steak at Napoleon’s head. “This kid came up with a steak and he wanted me to throw the steak at him as part of a retribution act for what Uncle Rico did to me,” recalled Heder. “So I got to throw a steak at someone and I nailed him and it felt great,” he said. “He loved it. Everybody was cheering him on. He felt like a rock star. I felt like a rock star. It was a win-win.” The Canadian Press

Why Australia is the perfect setting for a film about post-apocalyptic life The Rover. Aussie filmmaker takes to his home to film tale about a man out for revenge in a hostile world

Metro World News in Hollywood
Australian filmmaker David Michod made quite a first impression in Hollywood with his 2010 debut, Animal Kingdom, so a lot of eyes were on him as he chose a followup. That choice is now here in the form of The Rover, a simple postapocalyptic tale about a man (Guy Pearce) out for revenge against the guys who stole his car. Australia seems to lend itself to these post-apocalyptic settings. I love this kind of movie, people stranded in a really inhospitable landscape. And in some ways it doesn’t get more inhospitable than Australia largely because 80 per cent of the country is desert and there are so few people out there. It’s both epically beautiful and wholly terrifying when you’re out there, because you know that only a couple of little things would need to go wrong and you could die. For instance,
The Rover opens next Friday. contributed
New Zealand doesn’t really have any animals, so there’s lots of beautiful stuff to look at, but it also makes it a little bit dull. I realized how much I love roaming in the bush in Australia because of the fact that at any moment something that might kill you could pop out. Of course, in The Rover it’s more the people that might
kill you. In a way, it’s a kind of geopolitical inversion of the world in present day, because the world of The Rover in a way sort of exists on the planet today. It just happens to be in super-violent, resource-rich countries like Nigeria or West African states where there still is an infrastructure and official organization, but it’s just incredibly cutthroat, and there
Correctional Worker & Policing
is violence bubbling under the surface at all times. There is a sort of sense of anger threaded through this narrative. I can’t remember at what point in the writing process this started to happen, but I started to funnel a lot of my anger and despair into the world of the movie and specifically into Guy’s
character — anger at the willingness that the people today seem to have to just let the world fall into disrepair solely to service the rampant greed of a very small number of people. You look at the invasion of Iraq on a certain level, and it would seem to me that the only reason that administration embarked on that ludicrous endeavour was to enrich their friends. I mean, to cause so much suffering in order to enrich a small number of people is pathologically evil. And it’s difficult, when you think about these things, not to get angry. I love the simplicity of this story. This story was exciting to me because of its simplicity. I was trying to figure out what kind of movie to make after “Animal Kingdom,” and I decided I didn’t want to try to do something bigger and
more sprawling than that one, because that one was a pretty unwieldy beast in itself. I thought I would go the other way and do something that was much leaner and elemental. The simplicity of Guy’s objective in the movie was one of the things that appealed to me. He has a very clear, simple kind of super-objective, which is to get his car back or seek vengeance on the people who’ve taken it, but actually really for him the main objective for him is to find some reason to stay alive. For me, the movie opens with him sitting in his car contemplating suicide. How much has Of Mice and Men come up while making this or promoting this? Because there are some similarities. I did think about it a little bit, and once upon a time I did think about the character that Rob [Pattinson] plays as more of hulking man-child than Rob is, and maybe a little bit like the character in the Cormac McCarthy book “Child of God” — a sort of hulking simpleton. The elemental simplicity of it obviously immediately evokes memories or Steinbeck, but I didn’t re-read the book or anything when I was writing this. I always just wanted the characters to take on lives of their own.

MIGRAINE HEADACHES
In the past 10 years I suffered a lot with migraines. I would take 4 popular pain killer and none of these worked well enough. After I found MIGRAID I was blown away as it really worked within 30 minutes with no side effects. I’m totally amazed. Absolutely floored. Michelle Woodman, 29, Crystal Falls, ON I was in the hospital for 2 weeks. They made tests including MRIs, tried every drug they had. Nothing worked. I was praying to die. My mom found MIGRAID in the health food store. It worked in 10 minutes. I couldn’t believe it. I want to express my gratitude. Christy Logue, 32, Tulsa, OK For 15 years I tried all the OTCs as well as prescription drugs that were a lot more expensive than MIGRAID. I was pleasantly surprised about how effective it was every time within 30 minutes. Maranca Daniels, 42, Murfreesboro, TN Guarantee printed on all boxes. Must help within 30 minutes or money refunded. Make your own test. It’s risk free. Bell supplies EVIDENCE from real people. The only evidence you can trust.

SNORING?
SLEEP APNEA?
As recommended by Dr. Gifford-Jones M. D. Helps to reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. What people truly experience: In most cases also stops snoring and gasping for air (sleep apnea) first night. Stops torturing your partner all night. Good sleep prevents being tired next day. Tired people work only at half capacity. I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my #23 NPN 80027595 life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON.

By Dr. Chakib Hammoud, M.H.,PhD. What people experience: I tried numerous other remedies all my life that were not effective. Since I discovered #24 I do not have a stuffy nose and itchy eyes when pollen season comes around. I don’t have to walk around like a doped zombie anymore. Leonard Waldner, 44, Delia, AB For 20 years my life was miserable with sneezing, watery eyes and sinus pressure year-round on most days. I was amazed. On 3rd day all allergies were gone. It was like magic. Becky Gerber, 25, Dover, OH Golfing without allergy attacks I tried all the medications and none worked. After taking 1 capsule in the morning I’m completely free of all symptoms. Emotive British neo-soul singer Sam Smith recently opened up about his sexuality in an interview with Fader magazine, sending minor ripples through the broad pool of music press on both sides of the Atlantic. As Smith prepares to release his spine-tingling debut, In the Lonely Hour, in North America this Tuesday, he acknowledges that he watched to see how his comment — that the album’s lovedrunk gut-punches were inspired by a guy he fell for last year who didn’t return his feelings — would reverberate. “I don’t read album reviews, but I’ve been reading the stories about my personal life — which is completely fine,” the 22-year-old said in a recent telephone interview from London. “I was expecting it. I said what I said for a reason. And yeah, it’s interesting just to read, isn’t it? The whole past few years have been interesting, just to see what the world is like sometimes.” And in the hurricane of interviews and coverage, does Smith feel accurately portrayed? “Oh, one million per cent,” he replied. “You’re getting my personality spot-on. I am highly emotional and also very loving and caring and I’m just an honest person. “And I think people are feeling that honesty.” They’re certainly feeling some element of Smith’s forward-thinking sound, which marries his expressive, opulent vocals to elegantly uncomplicated backdrops, ranging from the dignified piano and strings of Stay With Me to the buoyant electronics of Money on My Mind. Both those tracks have topped the chart in the U.K. — and his Naughty Boy collaboration La La La breathed the same rarefied air — while Stay With Me has climbed to No. 10 in Canada, too. His success at home isn’t

“I am highly emotional and also very loving.” Sam Smith, singer
necessarily surprising — he received both the BBC Sound of 2014 Award as well as the prestigious Brit Awards Critics’ Choice trophy — but he’s stunned at the quick development of his career stateside, where Brit artists typically face a more arduous path to success. A goosebumpy choir-aided performance on Saturday Night Live in March certainly helped — Smith, by the way, says host Louis C.K. was “so lovely” — but there’s also the fact that Smith draws from predominantly North American influences, citing Etta James, Joni Mitchell and Beyoncé (always Beyoncé) as the artists he listened to most while making his record. Still, Smith concedes that
the attention is a little overwhelming. He’s only years removed from attending high school in the sleepy commuter town of Bishop’s Stortford. He moved to London at 18 and wrote his debut album two years later while mired in a deep funk. “(Life) was pretty lonely,” he said of first moving to the city. “London’s a big place. All my friends were back where I’d grown up in the countryside. And also I fell in love with someone who didn’t love me back when I wrote the album — which probably made it easier to write music but harder to live life.” To Smith, unrequited love was largely unexplored territory in pop music. “I feel like there hasn’t been a body of work that’s really properly dealt with it head on in a simple pop way or a soulful way,” said Smith, who has performances scheduled in Toronto and Vancouver in September. Card countin’ Affleck gets kicked out of Windsor casino A day trip to Caesars Windsor turned into a dark night for Ben Affleck last month. According to Radar Online, the 41-year-old actor took a break from filming Batman v. Superman in Detroit to hit the Canadian casino on May 31. “He sat down and played for roughly 20 minutes before security heard he was
there. They made the dealers stop what they were doing and asked him to leave. Ben seemed pretty mad,” a source told Radar. Affleck is a well-known card shark, having been banned from casinos in Las Vegas for counting cards; his reputation appears to have preceded him at Caesars. METRO

Social media is the bane of the fickle heart, as Justin Bieber is proving with his erratic postings pertaining to on-again, off-again girlfriend Selena Gomez. While it has seemed that the couple had finally split for good in recent months, Bieber doesn’t seem so sure.
Just this week, he posted a close-up photo of the two in an embrace with the caption, “Our love is unconditional.” Suggesting a tentative Romeo, he quickly deleted the posting — but not before many of his 16 million Instagram followers screengrabbed it and re-posted it.

Expect grate-ness Grilled Caramelized Onion and Feta Pizza. Don’t limit this family favourite to a hot oven. It can easily be made in your backyard Onions are a bit of a reflex buy for many. Every time these people go to the grocer they always buy a bag of onions. They’re a kitchen staples so you must always be about to run out, right? It’s a good theory. But if that was the case, you wouldn’t currently have 15 pounds of onions on the counter. That’s where this grillfriendly way of using a whole mess of caramelized onions
comes in. The pizza is topped with onions and garlic, spiked with caraway seeds and golden raisins, finished with roasted red peppers, pine nuts, and crumbled feta for a kind of Middle Eastern take on grilled pizza
1.
Set the pizza crust, in the bag, on the counter to come to room temperature.
2. Meanwhile, in large, heavy
pot, such as a cast-iron Dutch oven, over medium heat, melt the butter. Add onions and cook, stirring often, for 20 minutes. Stir in raisins, garlic and caraway seeds, then cook another 3 minutes, or until onions are significantly reduced and caramelized. Stir in the red peppers, then transfer the mixture to a bowl and set aside.

Spread the onion mixture evenly over the crust, then sprinkle it with pine nuts and feta. Cover the grill and cook for 4 to 6 minutes, or until the bottom is lightly browned and the feta is softened. Serve immediately.

Pink is the new white when it comes to casual back deck sipping wine. Rosé has been the warm weather go-to for Europeans for years and Canada is starting to catch up. Sadly, our opinion of blush wines has been influenced by white zinfandel: a popular, but polarizing, version that’s typically confectionary and usually sweet (most rosé is dry). Though pleasant enough, their reputation as a simple tipple for those new to wine hasn’t done classic rosé styles any favours. A rosé’s pink hue comes from dark grape skins coming into contact for a short while with the juice. The longer they’re together, the darker the wine. Spain has a history of rosé production using indigenous grape varietals. The Marqués de Cáceres 2013 Rosado ($13.95 $16.29) is made from tempranillo and its balance of juicy, berry fruit with a refreshing dryness is a benchmark. As well as tasting great, rosé wines are fantastic with food — especially if the dish is eclectic or has an aggressive, dominating flavour.

Assembly Carefully break the stones or tiles into segments, or cut them using a stone cutter for a more uniform look. Place all the pieces into the desired arrangement, and glue them down with the adhesive. Blend the tile grout or cement, and follow the accompanying instruc-

Before it dries, use a soft, wet cloth to wipe off the excess cement and let the product dry. More ideas Countless different and dynamic mosaic ideas can be found online. Neymar’s brace keeps party jumping in Brazil Scan the image with the Metro news app to relive some of the match’s critical moments
Neymar gave Brazil a winning start to its home World Cup, scoring twice to lead the host nation to an unconvincing 3-1 victory over Croatia in the opening game on Thursday. In his 50th match with Brazil, the 22-year-old forward scored a goal in each half to help the hosts survive an early scare and escape disaster in front of a packed Itaquerao Stadium after Croatia had taken an early lead. Marcelo found his own net while trying to clear a low cross by Ivica Olic in the 11th minute, but Neymar then showed why the nation’s high hopes are all pinned on him. He equalized in the 29th minute, clearing a defender in midfield before making a run toward the edge of the area and firing a perfectly placed low shot that went in off the post. The game turned on a controversial penalty awarded by Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura in the 71st minute when striker Fred went down inside the area under minimal contact from defender Dejan Lovren. Neymar scored from the spot for his 33rd goal with Brazil. The Barcelona star got a standing ovation when he was substituted near the end of the match. “It’s important to start

Those kinds of fouls are penalized there,” Croatia coach Niko Kovac said. “That is shameful, this is not a World Cup referee. He had one kind of criteria for them and another for us. The rules were not the same,” Kovac said. As Croatia searched desperately for an equalizer, Oscar added to the lead in the first minute of injury time with a

Cristiano Ronaldo cut short a training session with Portugal on Thursday, leaving the field with an ice pack over his left knee — indicating that his tendinitis may still be bothering the star forward. Ronaldo trained with the rest of the team for about 15-20 minutes doing physical exercises but then did not take part in the rest of the session with full ball drills. Instead, he stretched on his own and signed a few shirts for fans before going to sit on the bench. When he left, he had an ice pack over his left knee. Ronaldo has been bothered by left leg injuries ahead of the World Cup, and was sidelined for two weeks with tendinitis in the knee and a thigh problem. However, Portugal midfielder Joao Moutinho said there was nothing to worry about concerning Ronaldo’s health. “Ever since he started to train with us he has been 100 per cent like the rest of us,” Moutinho said. “Everything is fine with him... The ice is normal after training.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

France’s team doctor has criticized Bayern Munich for the way the club handled a lingering back injury that ruled star winger Franck Ribery out of the World Cup. Ribery appeared to have made progress from a chronic lower back injury that had plagued him for weeks, only to be ruled out of the competition last Friday when he pulled up in training. It came just three days before France flew to Brazil, depriving coach Didier Deschamps of his most experienced player and most

Spurs on fire vs. Heat Miami on the ropes. No team has ever come back from a 3-1 series deficit in an NBA final The San Antonio Spurs have three more chances to grab the championship trophy that slipped away last year. The way they’re dominating the Miami Heat, they might need just one. Kawhi Leonard had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and the Spurs routed the Heat again, winning 107-86 on Thursday night to open a commanding 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals. The Spurs can win their fifth NBA championship with a victory at home in Game 5 on Sunday and avenge their seven-game loss to Miami last year. And if the Heat are going to deny them again, it will take the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history. LeBron James tried to keep the Heat in it with 28 points and eight rebounds, but Dwyane Wade was just 1 of 10 through three quarters and finished with 10 points. No team has overcome a 3-1 deficit in the finals, and the way they were outclassed twice on their home floor makes it hard to imagine the two-time champions being the first. Tony Parker added 19 points, and Tim Duncan had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs, who shot 57 per cent from the field. The Spurs lost twice in Miami to end last year’s finals, their only defeat in the championship round. They won their two games in South Florida this time by a combined 40 points. If this was the last home

game of the season in Miami, it looked and sounded nothing like the ones to end the last two years, which featured confetti falling and trophies raised. This one had the unfamiliar sound of boos late in the first half and a chant of “Go Spurs Go!” with under three minutes left from the San Antonio fans who remained long after many of Miami’s had bolted. If the Heat force a Game 6, it would be in Miami Tuesday. The Heat had followed their last 13 post-season losses with a victory, but at the end of a fourth straight season that went the distance, they might be out of gas. Miami seemed to lack the energy — or maybe effort — to defend San Antonio’s precision ball movement for the full 24 seconds, and time after time the Spurs ended up with a shot from somebody who didn’t have a defender nearby. It was another rough start for James, who battled cramps in Game 1, then left the court and briefly returned to the locker-room midway through the first quarter Thursday. Under Gregg Popovich, the Spurs have won 15 of the 18 best-of-seven series in which they led 2-1. The Heat hadn’t lost back-to-back games in the playoffs since dropping three straight against the Boston Celtics in the 2012 Eastern Conference finals.

Murray loses a match on grass
Unknown takes Nadal down
Andy Murray was denied his 20th successive win on grass when he was beaten 7-6 (10), 6-2 by Radek Stepanek in the third round at Queen’s Club on Thursday. Murray, the defending champion and No. 3 seed, claimed his first match win at Queen’s in 2005 and went on to win the Wimbledon warmup three times.
Rafael Nadal was knocked out in the second round of the grass-court Gerry Weber Open on Thursday, losing 6-4, 6-1 to German wild card Dustin Brown. Brown, the world No. 85, broke Nadal’s serve at the fifth attempt to win the first set, and he pulled off two audacious lobs in succession to break the Spaniard again early in the second.

Best not good enough in this cup final NHL. After Game 4 effort fell short, Kings will try to wrap up cup in sunny California After feeling satisfied about his team’s play in three losses to open the Stanley Cup final, New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault could easily empathize with the Los Angeles Kings when the roles were reversed in Game 4. “It was a real tough game, I think, for L.A,” Vigneault said. “It was probably their best game of the playoffs that they’ve played against us.” And it was a loss, as the Kings failed to finish off the sweep thanks to 40 saves by Henrik Lundqvist, one by Anton Stralman and one by a combination of snow built up in the crease and Derek Stepan. That the Rangers needed so much luck and strong goaltending only underscored just how dominant Los Angeles
was. Just don’t tell the resultsoriented Kings that. Even after players talked after wins about needing to play better, the selfcriticism was turned up despite outshooting the Rangers 41-19. “At the end of the day, we weren’t good enough to win,” captain Dustin Brown said. “It’s about finding a way to be better.” The chance to do that comes in Friday’s Game 5 back in Los Angeles with the Kings still in command of the series and the cup waiting nearby. After Game 4 at Madison Square Garden, it didn’t feel as though the Kings were on the cusp of the title, like it did after they went up three games to none. All around the visiting locker-room there was talk about what areas needed to be better, from start to finish. “We still probably could play better for a full game,” fourth-line centre Mike Richards said. “It took us a little bit to get into it again for whatever reason.” The Canadian Press

The CFL’s board of governors is scheduled to vote on the deal Friday and the expectation
is they’ll accept it. The CFLPA didn’t provide a breakdown of the votes but a majority of players — 50 per cent plus one — on six of the nine CFL teams was required for the deal to be accepted. The players voted in favour despite many expressing their unhappiness publicly and on social media about the deal. It’s just ‘Johnny Backup’ for now Johnny Manziel’s No. 2 jersey has double meaning. He’s behind Brian Hoyer. Browns coach Mike Pettine said Hoyer is “securely ahead” in the competition to be Cleveland’s starting quarterback this season, but his lead over Manziel isn’t “insurmountable.” After the Browns ended their three-day mandatory mini-camp Thursday, Pettine sized up the battle as a friendly fight that will heat up when the team opens training camp late in July. Richards a rare sight Brad Richards looked to be on his way out of New York in 2013, when former Rangers coach John Tortorella not only demoted the veteran centre but scratched him in the playoffs. A year later, coach Alain Vigneault started down the same path by putting the 34-year-old on left wing of the Rangers’ fourth line in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final. Richards played just nine minutes 22 seconds at even strength and a total of 13:20. Vigneault said he met with his lines individually, including Richards, Brian Boyle and Derek Dorsett. He wanted to spell out his reasoning and assignments. “I mean, at this time of the year it’s only about one thing: It’s about the team,” Vigneault said Wednesday after the Rangers’ 2-1 win. Richards has no points in the final and just four goals and four assists in 23 games since a strong opener against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Canadian Pressw

Aries
Taurus
April 21 - May 21 You’ll be in an impulsive mood today and there is a danger you might fall out with someone you should be on good terms with. Don’t start a war of words just because you don’t care for the way they do business.
May 22 - June 21 Don’t let others dictate to you because once they get the idea that you can be ordered about they will make your life a misery. Make sure they know you can bite as well as you bark.
Scorpio
Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 There is no reason you should not go out and have a good time but that does not mean you have to buy drinks for everyone. You have been far too generous of late.
Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 The full moon in your sign could see you acting out of character today and you may even make a fool of yourself. But what does it matter? It’s all good, clean fun.
Capricorn
Cancer
June 22 - July 23 If you allow yourself to be talked into doing something you don’t want to do today, you will regret it for weeks or months to come. There’s no easy way to tell people you can’t help them. Just say “no”.
Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 You may not be able to make sense of what is happening at the moment but don’t worry. You aren’t the only one who is having a hard time getting a grip on reality. Once the full moon fades all will be revealed.
Aquarius
Leo
July 24 - Aug. 23 The full moon could have you doing things and saying things that will cause problems of a romantic nature. Handle affairs of the heart with a great deal of care over the next 48 hours.
Virgo
Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 Because today’s full moon cuts across a powerful angle of your chart you must be ready for those around you to overreact in some way. On the home front there will be times when logic goes out the window.
and more
Libra
Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 You seem a bit excitable but that’s OK — most likely nothing bad will come of it. In fact this looks like being a good time for you, especially if you are traveling or planning a vacation.
Sagittarius
Gemini

Crossword: Canada Across and Down
March 21 - April 20 Don’t get uptight if someone says something you disagree with. Stay calm, tell your side of the story and then listen to theirs. Don’t be surprised if what they say makes sense.
No credit refused
Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 The more you socialize now, the more likely it is you’ll learn something to your advantage. Before the day is over you will be good friends with someone who shares your beliefs, ideals and taste for adventure.
Pisces
Feb. 20 - March 20 Resist the temptation to tell an employer what you really think of them today. It won’t work out right. If you cannot say something nice then it might be wise to say nothing at all. Think of your future. SALLY BROMPTON
