Sister seeking closure in Loretta Saunders killing The sister of Loretta Saunders says she needs to hear the details of her sibling’s murder in order to gain closure. Lorretta was a pregnant Inuk woman living in Halifax when she was killed Feb. 13. Her body was found on the Trans-Canada Highway in Moncton two weeks later. Loretta’s roommates, Blake Leggette, 26, and his girlfriend, Victoria Henneberry, 28, have been charged with first-degree murder. “I go to bed at night; I can’t sleep properly,” Audrey Saunders said Thursday by phone from St. John’s. “I’m having all these different dreams, like,

‘What happened to her?’” Audrey will be looking for those answers at the preliminary inquiry in Halifax, which starts Monday. That’s where the family will hear details of the murder investigation for the first time. “I just hope that I go and I get closure and I get this nightmare out of my head,” she said. She recounted fond memories of when she was a 13-yearold babysitter to her three-yearold sister Loretta. As an adult, Loretta helped
Audrey apply for nursing school at Memorial University, putting expenses on her credit card. But Loretta’s death led to Audrey dropping out of school. She is unemployed, and finding the money to travel to Halifax with her six-year-old daughter Mariah is difficult. She is selling bracelets to raise money, and asking for donations, to help cover her $300 travel expenses. If Audrey is unable to attend, her father will be the only family member in the courtroom. Loretta’s mother, a brother and another sister have been called as witnesses and are not allowed to hear the court proceedings. “Some parents, they don’t get to bury their kids. They’re missing,” said Audrey. “I feel like I’m lucky that there will be justice for her, that we found her.” Desiree Finhert/FOR METRO

Ray’s open for business... again Ray Khattar serves up a takeout order for a customer Thursday at his new Dartmouth location, 75 Akerley Blvd. BRAEDON CLARK/FOR METRO
Yum. Loyal customers follow Ray’s Lebanese Cuisine to new Dartmouth location After more than three decades at Scotia Square Mall in downtown Halifax, Ray’s Lebanese Cuisine has a new home. The popular restaurant, best known for its award-winning falafels, opened on Akerley Boulevard in Dartmouth on Thursday, several months after a dispute over rent and leasing
terms led to its exit from Scotia Square. The new lease could run for up to 14 years. Even though Akerley Boulevard is a long way from downtown, it didn’t take long for loyal customers to find their way to Ray Khattar’s new spot. “I’ve been coming to Ray’s for about 15 years,” said Michael Landers, a Metro Transit bus driver who came early and beat the lunch crowd. “I usually get here a couple times a week.” In between preparing shawarma wraps and greeting familiar faces, Khattar explained

the business philosophy that has served him so well over the years. “I don’t treat people like customers. I treat them like my friends,” he said. “If they can’t pay, what’s the big deal? They can pay tomorrow.”
Khattar made good on that pledge when several customers weren’t able to pay for their meals because the debit/ credit machine hadn’t yet been installed. “It’s OK, come by tomorrow to pay,” Khattar said as he scribbled down the customer’s name and what they owed. As noon approached, the shiny new restaurant was overrun with a line of customers that stretched out the door. Among them was Al Cyr, another regular from the Scotia Square days. “Ray is a just a great guy,” Cyr said. BRAEDON CLARK/FOR METRO

A 19-year-old Dartmouth man is facing charges after allegedly sending sexually explicit photos of himself to a 12-yearold girl in Maryland. Richard Malcolm Coakley is also alleged to have been planning a trip to Maryland to meet the girl, according to Halifax Regional Police spokesman Const. Pierre Bourdages. Local police were alerted to the situation in late May by law enforcement from Harford County, an area northeast of Baltimore. A subsequent investigation ended on July 11 when police say Coakley was arrested at an apartment in Dartmouth. Computers were also seized at that time. “This sort of cross-border investigation doesn’t happen every single day,” Bourdages said. “We received tremendous cooperation from law enforcement in the United States.” Bourdages said cases that cross national borders can be complicated and generally take more time to resolve than those that are strictly local. “There are different laws and processes to work through, and that takes time,” he said. Coakley is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth provincial court on Aug. 12 and will face charges of possession of child pornography, invitation to sexual touching and three counts of luring a child.

Ever-growing Halifax Pride aims to attract broader base Exponential. Fourthlargest festival of its type in Canada Desiree Finhert halifax@metronews.ca
Even as it continues to grow, Pride in Halifax remains more about inclusion than growth. The 27th annual Halifax Pride Festival is the fourth largest in Canada with over 100 volunteers, and dozens of events from July 17 to 27. “There’s been such an explosion of growth in the last five years,” board chair Ramona Westgate said Thursday. “It’s almost doubled every couple of years, our numbers.” But Westgate said it’s not
necessarily important to keep growing. “It’s not the size of the festival, or the number of events, but what kinds of demographics we can reach,” she added. “We don’t want to necessarily add new events. We want to attract different demographics, and appeal to different demographics and represent different demographics.” There are five new events this year in an effort to attract different crowds. New events include OUT Best In Show, Pride’s Jollytails, the All-Bodies Swim presented by Trans Connects, and the OutLOUD’s night of discopunk and epic loud bands at Michaels. “So looking at the gendervarying demographic and the youth demographic, these are two areas where we wanted to
have these events for a long time,” said Westgate. “It’s not something that we just decided to do this year. It is something we have strived for, for a few years.” Long-time attendees of Pride will also be able to enjoy some well-loved standards. The packed 10-day schedule that kicked off Thursday includes the Dykes vs. Divas softball game and Cosmic Drag Queen Bingo. There are lectures, music and theatre, ceremonies and vigils. “There’s something significant and meaningful to us, for every single one of these events,” said Westgate. “Try to take in as much as you can.” The festival officially began Thursday with the raising of the Rainbow Pride flag at Halifax City Hall.

“Rain or shine, a rainbow will always come out,” said Nathan Boudreau, one of many who braved the rain to see the Town of Shelburne fly its pride flag and to support the diversity it represented on Thursday. The Town of Shelburne is the first town outside the HRM to fly a pride flag at its town hall.
Mayor Karen Mattatall read the proclamation her council adopted the night before. “The Town of Shelburne promotes the positive contribution of the diversity of sexual orientation and gender identity to our community,” she read. “The town encourages all segments of the lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender communities and their heterosexual supporters to celebrate their sexual orientation and gender identity.” She proclaimed the town’s support for Halifax Pride week. Neville MacKay, a resident of Shelburne, spoke just before the flag was raised.
“Shelburne…who knew?” joked MacKay. “It is quite phenomenal that we have grown to this point.” He said that celebrating pride was celebrating who they were as people. “It doesn’t matter if you are black or white or somewhere in between or man or woman or somewhere in between.” Shelburne Coast Guard

AFN reaffirms calls to drop education bill Assembly of First Nations. Leaders want ‘clear indication’ Bill C-33 is being withdrawn The Assembly of First Nations concluded its annual meeting Thursday with no sign it is budging from its position that a contentious aboriginal education reform bill needs to be dropped, an issue that has put it at odds with the federal government. After considering various counter-proposals to the legislation during their gathering in Halifax this week, First Nations leaders opted to stay the course and continue their call for the withdrawal of Bill C-33, the First Nations Control of First Nations Education Act. While the federal government put the bill on hold after First Nations representatives from across Canada flatly rejected the changes in late May, the assembly’s interim national chief said that for many native leaders, suspending the plan fails to go far enough. “There needs to be a clear indication that the bill is being withdrawn,” said Chief Ghislain Picard. “What is even more important is that the assembly agrees

there is a process that needs to take place, that it be as broad as possible and that it be as inclusive as possible.” The proposed legislation — along with $1.9 billion in accompanying funding — deeply divides the aboriginal
community, with some viewing it as an opportunity to improve the lives of aboriginal children and others dismissing it as exerting too much control over First Nations affairs. The suspension of any additional funding for aborig-
inal education while the bill remains in limbo has led to general frustration among aboriginal leaders. “They have a fiduciary responsibility to provide education to our kids and they’ve got to start changing their attitude
and be more accommodating and work with us,” said Chief Ava Hill of the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory in Ontario, who put forward the education resolution that was ultimately adopted by the assembly. “If the (aboriginal affairs) minister is serious about doing something here, he should be open to sitting and meeting with us.” Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt’s office has said the bill will remain on hold and no new money will be spent until the assembly gets behind the legislation. Valcourt has also said too much time and effort has gone into the legislation to start over again. Valcourt expressed his own frustration earlier this year, saying the assembly walked away from its agreement with the government. The assembled chiefs also voted Thursday to begin discussions with the federal government on settling existing title claims on a treaty-bytreaty basis in the wake of last month’s historic Tsilhqot’in ruling from the Supreme Court. “We view that as a victory for all indigenous nations,” said Saskatchewan regional Chief Perry Bellegarde.

Executive Coach says the bus was being driven by Bill Westlake, the co-owner and operator of Westlake Tours, which is also based in Pennsylvania. RCMP charges Mike Duffy with fraud and bribery Senate scandal. Spokesman for PM Harper calls suspended senator’s alleged behaviour ‘disgraceful’
With his folksy style and passion for politics, Mike Duffy became a household name as a veteran television journalist — a career that led him to a coveted Conservative seat in Parliament’s upper chamber. All that came crashing down Thursday as the RCMP laid 31 charges of fraud, breach of trust and bribery against the suspended senator. The charges involve Duffy’s claims for living expenses, claims for travel expenses unconnected with Senate business and fraudulent contracts, said the RCMP’s assistant commissioner, Gilles Michaud. They also cover a $90,000 payment Duffy allegedly received

from Nigel Wright, the prime minister’s former chief of staff. Convictions on the charges could result in a prison sentence. The bribery count carries a maximum of 14 years. Duffy’s first court appearance is set for Sept. 16, the day after Parliament is scheduled
to resume. Donald Bayne, Duffy’s lawyer, said when the full story is told, it will be clear Duffy is innocent of any wrongdoing. “Those — including many in the media — who have been so eager and quick over the past year and a half to malign and even libel Sen. Duffy without his ever having had a fair hearing, should slow down their rush to judgment and let fair process determine this matter.” The behaviour outlined in the RCMP charges against Duffy is “disgraceful,” a spokesman for Stephen Harper said Thursday. “We assisted the RCMP throughout their investigation, and congratulate them on the progress they have made,” Jason MacDonald said in a statement. “Those who break the rules must suffer the consequences. The conduct described in the numerous charges against Mr. Duffy is disgraceful.”
Duffy affair an X factor for Tories Prime Minister Stephen Harper has a new political opponent to contend with heading into the 2015 election, when suspended Conservative senator Mike Duffy will have his day in court on 31 charges ranging from bribery to breach of trust in relation to alleged misuses of public funds. The legal machinations could very well unfold in the run-up to the federal election scheduled for the fall of next year, keeping the details alive in the headlines. The speed of the ensuing trial will have political strategists making their calculations. the canadian press

‘Unprecedented.’ Malaysia Airlines reeling once again months after plane vanishes Two Boeing 777s. Two incredibly rare aviation disasters. And one airline. In what appears to be a mind-boggling coincidence, Malaysia is reeling from the second tragedy to hit its national airline in less than five months. On March 8, a Malaysia Airlines jetliner vanished about an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur, spawning an international mystery that remains unsolved. On Thursday, the airline — and the nation — were pitched into another crisis after the same type of aircraft was reported shot down over Ukraine. Ukraine officials said the plane was brought down by a missile over the violence-wracked eastern part of the country. Other details were only just beginning to emerge. “This is a tragic day in what has already been a tragic year

Hamas is ‘ready’. Israeli soldiers launch ground offensive in Gaza Strip The heavy thud of tank shells, often just seconds apart, echoed across the Gaza Strip early Friday as thousands of Israeli soldiers launched a ground invasion, escalating a 10-day campaign of heavy air bombardment to try to destroy Hamas’ rocket-firing abilities and the tunnels used by militants to infiltrate Israel. “There is a tank shell every minute,” said an official in the Gaza security operations room, who said all of the seaside strip’s border areas were being shelled and that Hamas fighters were exchanging fire with Israeli troops near a
northern Gaza town. However, a ground offensive could quickly lead to military and political entanglements for Israel, especially if more Palestinian civilians are killed. More than 240 Palestinians have already died in the air campaign, including 14 children under age 12 killed over the past two days, according to Palestinian health officials. One Israeli has also died. A Hamas spokesman, Fawzi Barhoum, said Israel “will pay dearly” for the assault. “Hamas is ready for a confrontation,” he said. The Associated Press

ing on who fired the missile and whether it came from the Russian or Ukrainian side of the border, a U.S. official said. Bodies, debris and burning wreckage of the Boeing 777 were strewn over a field near the rebel-held village of Hrabove in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, about 40 kilometres from the Russian border, where fighting has raged for months. The aircraft appeared to have broken up before impact, and there were large pieces of the plane that bore the red, white and blue markings of Malaysia Airlines — now familiar worldwide because of the carrier’s still-missing jetliner from earlier this year.
There was no sign of any survivors from Flight 17, which took off shortly after noon Thursday from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 283 passengers, including three infants, and a crew of 15. Malaysia’s prime minister said there was no distress call before the plane went down and that the flight route was declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organization. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called it an “act of terrorism” and demanded an international investigation. He insisted his forces did not shoot down the plane. Officials said more than half of those aboard the plane were Dutch citizens, along with pas-

Tim Hortons brewing some innovative ideas Coffee klatch. Iconic Canadian coffee chain brainstorms new ways to beat competition
If a pint of coffee-flavoured beer gets you salivating, then Tim Hortons has a few other ideas that could change how you think about the restaurant chain. Executives have lifted the curtain on a new concept store, buried deep inside the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, as part of an inviteonly convention this week for store owners and suppliers that is essentially a visual brainstorming session. Redefining itself in the highly competitive food services industry will be a challenge for a mainstay brand like Tim Hortons, but as more companies try to encroach on its dominant position in the Canadian coffee market

Lean and mean. Microsoft slashes jobs, boosts stock Microsoft is cutting up to 18,000 jobs, about 14 per cent of its staff, over the next year as it works to cut down on management layers and integrate the Nokia devices business it bought in April. The news sent Microsoft’s stock up three per cent in premarket trading. Although the job cuts had been expected, the extent of them was a surprise. It’s the boldest move by CEO Satya Nadella since he took the reins
from Steve Ballmer in February. In a public email to employees Thursday, he said the changes were needed for the company to “become more agile and move faster.” Of the job cuts, about 12,500 professional and factory jobs will be cut. Microsoft expects charges of $1.1 billion to $1.6 billion over the next four quarters, which includes $750 million to $800 million for severance and related benefit costs. The Associated Press

Vodou pilgrims head to the waters to pay tribute to patron saint Followers of Haiti’s most celebrated patron saint, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, gather at the Saut d’Eau waterfall every summer to pay tribute and make requests. This year, worshippers performed Voodoo cleansing rituals in the water, stripping off their clothes and using leaves to wash away bad luck
and their sins. They also petitioned the saint to improve their lives. Lionel Saint-Jean said that after losing his house in Haiti’s catastrophic 2010 quake, he asked the saint for a new one and got it. “So I came this year to thank her for that,” SaintJean said. Thousands come to Saut d’Eau every year to honor the virgin. Voodoo, or Vodou as many practitioners prefer, evolved from West African beliefs and adopted elements of Roman Catholicism. STAR-TELEGRAM.COM
A tree grew in Haiti
The Saut d’Eau area holds cultural significance in Haiti, to both Catholic and Vodou practitioners. • It is believed that the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel appeared on a palm tree there in the 19th century. • A French priest, afraid of the superstition this would inspire, cut the tree down, but it nonetheless became an important religious destination for Haitians.
We’re halfway through July, and by now you’re likely in one of two camps: the side that’s comfortable with Iggy Azalea’s Fancy as the Song Of The Summer or the side that’s declared this to be the worst Song Of The Summer we’ve ever endured. We don’t know what camp the mighty Weird Al Yankovic is in, but anything that divisive is too juicy a target for him to avoid during his equally mighty Eight Days of Al gimmick. Let’s talk about sex (tapes) Reel Guys
Synopsis
Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz are Jay and Annie, a married couple who try to spice things up in the bedroom by videotaping themselves working through the Joy of Sex page by page. All goes well until Jay forgets to delete the video and mistakenly posts their threehour amateur porntacular on the cloud. With BFFs Robby (Rob Corddry) and Tess (Ellie Kemper), the embarrassed couple try and retrieve each of the “infected” iPads, especially the one in the hands of Hank Rosenbaum (Rob Lowe), the family-first CEO of the company that publishes Annie’s G-rated mommy blog. • Richard: ••••• • Mark: •••••
AUGMENTED REALITY
Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel’s chemistry can’t save Sex Tape. CONTRIBUTED
Implausible porno. Cameron Diaz in her underwear, a newly slim Jason Segel and a clever Rob Lowe casting can’t save this film’s lacklustre libido Richard: Mark, any movie with the word sex in the title and Cameron Diaz in her underwear and a newly slim Jason Segel in the alltogether should be a lot sexier than Sex Tape is. The first 20 minutes plays more like an attempt to break the world record for using the word “sex” in a movie than an actual story. Diaz and Segel talk
about sex, have sex, then talk about it some more, but rather than being racy or slap-your-thigh funny it becomes tiresome. The only word used more often is “iPad,” which is even less provocative. Mark: Richard, this movie is one of the best Apple commercials I’ve seen in years. But it does have some laughs. I couldn’t decide, though, if it was original yet flimsy or flimsy yet original. I was glad the running time clocked in at a neat 90 minutes as it was wearing out its welcome fast. That’s mostly because Cameron Diaz’ smokin’ hot bod is naked only in the first half of the picture. She
has a pretty good chemistry with Jason Segel, but Rob Lowe steals the show. Considering his own past, it’s a neat bit of stunt casting. RC: The Robs are the best part of the movie. The iPad retrieval from Rosenbaum’s mansion gives Rob Lowe (who knows a thing or two about sex tapes) a chance for some off-the-wall fun as the straight-laced executive with a wild side. Rob Corddry’s wide-eyed interest in his best friend’s sex tape was amusing and felt like the most genuine thing in the movie. I thought Diaz and Segel were OK, but I didn’t buy into the movie’s main joke for a second.
MB: Yes, well, talk about a manufactured crisis! There’s lots to pick apart here, especially the subplot involving Corddry’s blackmailing teenage son. But there’s some nifty dialogue, especially at the beginning of the movie, and a scene I liked at the porn server’s with a cameo by a famous comic actor. By the way, all those porn website titles they spiel off are real ones, or, umm, so I was told by the guy sitting next to me. RC: Hey! I was sitting next to you. I take the fifth. Unlike you, I hated the first section of the movie. I thought the least interesting part of the movie was the sex and the sex talk.
→ Thinking about making a sex tape? Scan this photo with your Metro News app before you do. → See the full instructions on Metro’s Voices page.
MB: No one will mistake this movie for the classic comedies of Preston Sturges. The movie aims low and thereby exceeds expectations. Not very demanding, but it is summer.

Sheen dings Taco Bell: ‘Where else do you go when you are hammered?’
METRO DISH OUR TAKE ON THE WORLD OF CELEBRITIES The Word
It’s not Harry’s style to embark on a solo career Ned Ehrbar
Metro in Hollywood
Calm down, kids. Harry Styles is not leaving One Direction to embark on a solo career. Not yet, at least. “Harry has no plans to go solo,” a source tells Radar Online. “Harry is very reliant on the guys and feels much more secure when with them. He is actually quite timid in person.” That’s adorable and
all, but now I’m starting to think that there might actually be something to the rumors and that this denial is just a ruse. After all, the British are masters at selfdeprecation, and the more self-effacing they get the less you can believe them. Like when you offer an Englishman more cake and he says, “Oh, I couldn’t possibly”? He could, in fact. So if this “source” had just left it at Harry being comfortable in a group setting, that would have been fine — and definitely more than a little suggestive. But the whole timid thing? Red flag, man. He’s pulling a Timberlake.

Sheryl Crow
Sheryl Crow having trouble finding an equal Sheryl Crow likes to be extrasure before jumping into anything, which is why she’s been in no rush to walk down the aisle. “It’s better to have three broken engagements than three divorces,” she tells Good Housekeeping, poking fun at her own dating history. So far as we know, she’s only ever been engaged to Lance Armstrong, but she’s also dated the likes of Eric Clapton and Owen Wilson.
“I had always gone out with guys who were highly successful, which would seem like it would put me at an equal level,” she explains to the magazine. “But what ends up happening is that one of you becomes smaller — and it was always me. It’s always the woman. I mean, I don’t know if it’s always the woman, but I do think that sometimes in order for one person’s light to shine, everyone else has to dim theirs.”
This might not actually count as news, but Charlie Sheen got wasted and wandered through a Taco Bell drive-through on foot, chatting amiably with customers waiting in their cars. One customer got the whole thing on camera and posted it to YouTube in a clip that features Sheen offering, “Sorry, I’m so f---ing hammered.” The actor’s very patient rep, Jeff Ballard, tells E! News that Sheen was in fact drunk — and being chauffeured around at the time — and that the incident happened last week while he was on hiatus from his Anger Management sitcom. “Where else do you go when you are hammered?” Ballard offers.
Biebs to be on hot seat about Career first, romance and again Gomez marriage second for driven Harry Potter star
Daniel Radcliffe’s focus on his career is reportedly making for some uncomfortable times at home with girlfriend of two years Erin Darke, according to celebrity biographer Randy Jernigan. “Right now, Daniel’s career comes first, not romance and marriage. Erin was expecting more from him. She feels like she isn’t a priority in his life,” Jernigan says. The author, who has an unauthorized biography of the Harry Potter star due later this summer, points to a recent Daily Beast article in which Radcliffe dismissed engagement rumors as “absolute bullocks,” angering
Daniel Radcliffe
Darke. “They’re not engaged, but when he scoffed at the idea of marriage to the reporter, she was offended,” he says. “It made her feel like she wasn’t important to him.”
It’s too bad Justin Bieber had such a terrible time during his last videotaped Justin Bieber deposition in connection with his paparazzi assault case, because the pop star is going to have to do it all over again. A judge has ordered Bieber back for further interrogation due to his refusal to answer questions related to on-again, off-again girlfriend Selena Gomez, according to TMZ. Bieber will be questioned by the same lawyer who riled him so back in March, prompting the repeated response of “Don’t ask me about her again” when questioned about Gomez.

In a wine rut? Do you keep pouring the same old pinot grigio or merlot? Well, it’s time to start drinking outside the box and experiment with a new grape. While there are hundreds of berries in the naked vineyard, a number are just shy of mass market popularity, which makes them ripe for discovery. I’m thinking white fruit like verdejo and grüner veltliner, and reds like grenache (a.k.a. garnacha) and tempranillo. Tempranillo is arguably wine’s most stealth grape, having slipped under the radar of most Canadian consumers for decades. A superstar in its native Spain, if you’ve had a red from its Rioja region you may have a taste for it. Campo Viejo’s 2011 Tempranillo ($14.45 $19.79) used to be called Crianza (a nod to the juice having spent at least one year aging in oak barrels). Smooth and mediumbodied, it shows classic red berry and cherry flavours along with a lingering impression of cedar, spice and leather. Try with grilled burgers, paella and meatladen pizzas. Rory looking to end unfortunate Fridays Golf. ‘Boy Wonder’ must prove he can follow up strong at British Open; Tiger shows vintage form to end opening round Rory McIlroy had everything go his way Thursday in the British Open. A lovely summer day in England with abundant sunshine and minimal wind allowed him to attack Royal Liverpool. He made half his six birdies on the par 5s and kept bogeys off his card. And on the day Tiger Woods made a promising return, McIlroy took the lead with a 6-under 66, his best score in nearly two years at a major. Now if he can only find a way to get to the weekend. McIlroy either set himself up for a good run at the claret jug or another dose of Friday failures. In what already has been an unusual year for golf, no trend is more mysterious than Boy Wonder going overnight from awesome to awful. Six times in his past eight tournaments, he has had a nine-hole score of 40 or higher on Friday that has taken him

doing that. I just haven’t done it recently. We’ll see what tomorrow brings and what weather it is and try and handle it as best I can. “Hopefully it’s just one of those things and I’m able to turn it around tomorrow.” Woods also would like to keep moving in the right direction. He got off to a troubling start with two quick bogeys, nearly made another one on the fourth hole, and then looked like a 14-time major champion when he ran off five birdies in six holes toward the

Ottawa’s long wait for CFL over Ottawa is like an expectant parent waiting for the birth of a child. Along with the excitement, nerves are on edge because when there’s something this special ready to burst upon the scene, there are fears that something could go wrong. The CFL is back in Ottawa with the Redblacks set to host the Toronto Argonauts Friday (7 p.m., TSN) in the team’s inaugural game at TD Place Stadium. It will be the first time the CFL has played in Ottawa since 2005. The stadium, which was going through its finishing touches on Thursday, will host a sell-out crowd of 24,000. Petitclerc rejoices in chef de mission role Multi-medallist. True champion From a small Quebec “You fight so hard to show and prove that … the village to the head of level of dedication and work it takes to get there Canada’s mission in are the same.” Chantal Petitclerc Glasgow via Edmonton Somewhere in Peter Eriksson’s house is the letter Chantal Petitclerc wrote him 25 years ago. Petitclerc was a teenager then, and looking for an outlet for her athletic interests. But as the only person in a wheelchair in the Quebec town of Saint-Marc-des-Carrieres, with a population of about 2,000, it wasn’t easy. “Her English was really poor. She wrote me a letter and asked me if I was interested in
coaching her,” said Eriksson, who was living in Edmonton at the time. The competitive fire that propelled Petitclerc to move to Edmonton to train — the beginning of what would be one of the finest sports careers by any Canadian — still burns strong in the 44-year-old, Eriksson said. That’s why her former coach feels she was the perfect choice as Canada’s chef de mission at the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Petitclerc believes she’s the first Paralympic athlete to be
named chef for any multi-sport Games. The chef de mission is the team leader and spokesman for Canadian athletes at the Games. Petitclerc took up sports — first swimming and then wheelchair racing — within a few months of losing the use of her legs at the age of 13 when a heavy barn door fell on her. She credits her high school phys-ed teacher Gaston Jacques with getting her excited about sports. Petitclerc went on to become one of Canada’s most
decorated athletes. She holds world records over three different wheelchair distances and has raced to 21 Paralympic medals including 14 golds. She captured five golds at both the 2004 Paralympics in Athens and 2008 Games in Beijing. The Commonwealth Games remain the only fully integrated major multi-sport event, making her role as chef of this team all the more meaningful. “As a Paralympic athlete, you fight so hard to show and prove that being an athlete is the same, and the training is the same, and the level of dedication and work it takes to get there are the same,” said Petitclerc. “To actually have an international event that recognizes that fully, it was historic.” the canadian press

Horoscopes by Sally Brompton
Aries
March 21 - April 20 Even an ambitious Aries needs to take it easy once in a while and the planets are now urging you to relax. Spend time with your loved ones today. They would like to see more of you.
Taurus
April 21 - May 21 Your task for the next 24 hours is o release all that pent-up energy that’s inside you in a way that does you good while not harming other people.
Gemini
May 22 - June 21 Anything of a creative nature will go well for you today – and you could make money from it too. Your number one aim is to enjoy what you’re doing.
Cancer
June 22 - July 23 According to the planets you’re not in the mood to make much of an effort, but that’s OK. There is no cosmic law that says you must be busy at all times.
Leo
July 24 - Aug. 23 Like everyone else, you have weaknesses and the planets warn that one of them — pride most likely — could be your undoing. Just because everything is going well does not mean you can let down your guard.
Virgo
Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 If you need assistance today ask for it, because you don’t have to do it on your own. You have friends who will be more than happy to help you out.
27
Libra
Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 Decide which is more important: love or ambition. You can, of course, have both but if you are wise you will put personal happiness first and professional success second.
Scorpio
Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 You seem to be pushing yourself harder than ever but will achieve more in the longterm if you balance your physical and mental efforts with plenty of relaxation.
Sagittarius
Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 There is no need to impose deadlines on what you’re doing. The more pressure you put on yourself, the more likely it is you will make a mistake.
Capricorn
Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 You are in a romantic mood and that’s good. The only danger is that you will put the object of your affection on too high a pedestal and feel devastated when they tumble.
