Pashley said it’s also great to see more women breaking the stereotype they don’t like dark beers and getting involved in the industry, because the ladies are better “tasters” and usually more open-minded — while he joked most men stick to one beer once they turn 19. As “an old guy” who grew up in Canada when there were no craft breweries or festivals, Pashley said he’s kept his life revolving around beer because it just gets “better and better.” “A good beer is as complex as most wines and there’s lots to be found there,” he said. Clinch said the Irish craft scene has “exploded” in the last five years just as in Canada, and it’s better for the economy to have a few small companies hiring dozens of people apiece instead of one large factory. Quench your thirst, Island-style Gahan House. New pub opening on the Halifax waterfront

A bubbly piece of Prince Edward Island is coming to the Halifax waterfront. This September, the Gahan House is planning to open in the former Hart & Thistle Gastropub space at Historic Properties. “It kind of all came together at once,” said Vanessa Smith of Gahan’s parent company, Murphy Group of Restaurants. “We’re excited to open and share what we do on P.E.I.” Smith said they had been planning on expanding the popular Gahan House in Charlottetown to Halifax “for a long time,” and were approached about the Upper Water Street space a few weeks ago. The historic location appealed to them because the Murphy Group uses many heritage buildings on P.E.I. for restaurants, Smith said. The Gahan Brewery was established in 1997. The first beers were bottled in 2008, including Sir John A’s Honey Wheat Ale, which Smith said has won multiple awards. “Our beer in Halifax has been getting more and more

popular,” Smith said about the Gahan line available at NSLC stores. Although Gahan and its sister brewery, the P.E.I Brewing Company, dominate the island craft beer market, Smith said there’s still enough room here to succeed alongside Propeller, Garrison and the North Brewing Company. “The craft beer industry is just blowing up right now and it has been for a couple years, even more so in Halifax,” Smith said. “I think that all the breweries offer something different.” The pub is set to open in early September and a few seasonal ales will be brewed on-site. Most of the regular beer will be shipped from Charlottetown. Smith wasn’t worried about the Hart & Thistle’s closure — and that of several other downtown businesses — saying there will always be businesses that “make it,” and others that don’t. “We’re going to just see what comes,” she said. Quest Society. Resident accused of assaulting several staff members Police say a resident at a Lower Sackville facility for people with development disabilities was arrested Tuesday for allegedly assaulting four staff members. Cpl. Greg Church of the RCMP says the 38-year-old resident was released and is expected to face assault charges when he appears in provincial court. He said nobody was hospitalized or injured in the incident. The man was returned to his room at the 16-bed Community Transition Program, a facility operated by Capital Health and the Quest Society in Halifax. Dorothy Edem, the project lead for Capital Health in the program, declined to comment on why staff laid a complaint on Tuesday or to provide details of what happened.

Previous incidents

The Quest facility has had two incidents that have prompted an internal review. • In May, a 56-year-old resident died after falling during a scuffle with a 28-year-old resident. No charges were laid after the RCMP concluded the death was partly due to the man’s pre-existing medical conditions. • Nichele Benn, a former resident, has pleaded not guilty to an assault charge for allegedly biting and striking a staff member. Benn’s lawyer has argued outside court that her client has a brain disorder and her case doesn’t belong in the legal system.

N.S. had to take faulty Bluenose II: Premier Vexatious vessel. More issues have been fixed than paperwork shows, says McNeil

Nova Scotia had no choice in taking possession of the Bluenose II last month, despite a myriad of outstanding problems with the still-unseaworthy vessel, Premier Stephen McNeil said Thursday. He said the company responsible for restoring the historic boat had fulfilled its contractual obligations, meaning the province was required to take over the ship on July 30. “The builder built the vessel based on the design that they had,” said McNeil. A recently released report outlined dozens of deficiencies associated with the much-delayed and overbudget project, ranging from problems with the boat’s steering and stability to poorly installed masts and a leaking bulkhead.

Criticism

“This is a piece of Nova Scotia pride. And the government botched the whole operation.” Kevin Lacey, Canadian Taxpayers Federation

McNeil said a number of those issues, including the ship’s stability problems, have been resolved and are simply a matter of updating the report. “Ironically, many of the deficiencies have been dealt with. The paperwork just hasn’t followed,” said McNeil, adding that he believes the ship is stable. At the project’s outset in 2009, the provincial government estimated the work would cost $14.4 million, but that had risen to $19 million as of June. In taking possession of the Bluenose II, the province withheld only $25,000 for issues related to work done by the builder. The auditor general has been asked to report on the problem-plagued restoration.

McNeil said he is confident the boat will be operational by the end of 2014, at which point it will undergo an “aggressive sea trial,” but he understands there is some frustration over the significant delays and cost overruns. “I think Nova Scotians have very clearly laid out that they are very discouraged,” said McNeil. “Quite frankly, this should have been dealt with long before I became premier. It hasn’t been (and) we’re dealing with it.” The inspection report that outlined the remaining deficiencies was conducted by the builder, Lengkeek Vessel Engineering — a cause for concern for Kevin Lacey, Atlantic director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “This would be like a student grading their own

exam,” said Lacey. “This vessel needs an independent examination to ensure the taxpayers are getting what they pay for.” Lacey has been an outspoken critic of the government’s handling of the ship’s restoration and questioned its decision to accept possession of the vessel. “This is a piece of Nova Scotia pride,” he said. “And the government botched the whole operation.” The Canadian Press

Province mum on allowable level of emissions from Northern Pulp Pictou Co. Environment Minister says decision about mill’s operations will depend partly on stack test set for Aug. 18 Nova Scotia’s environment minister won’t say what level of emissions would lead the

province to shut down Northern Pulp in Pictou County. Randy Delorey said Thursday the government is waiting on results from a stack test scheduled for Aug. 18 before deciding what to do about the mill, which has generated controversy because of smelly emissions over the summer. “I think the time is better spent actually looking for and

collecting the data to make those appropriate decisions,” Delorey told reporters following a cabinet meeting in Halifax. Delorey said he expects the test results by October, but he doesn’t know whether they will be made public, citing possible “commercial restrictions.” A group called Clean Pictou Air has called on the prov-

ince to do something about the particulate matter coming from the mill, though so far the province has allowed the company to continue operating. Last November, Health Minister Leo Glavine said the emissions posed no immediate health risk to Pictou residents after testing indicated particulate matter coming from the mill was 78 per cent

above the legal limit. “We have nothing really substantial from the scientific community or the medical community to indicate that we have a problem that has to be addressed right at this moment,” Glavine said Thursday. The results of the summer emissions tests will impact whether the mill is granted future operating permits, he added.

Northern Pulp spokesman David MacKenzie said the problem lies in part with the facility’s aging equipment, namely its electrostatic precipitator, which is not filtering emissions to environmental standards. But he said a long-term solution likely won’t be in place until next May, when a new precipitator unit is to be installed. The Canadian Press

Public gets say on subdivision bylaw changes Proposals. Inspection fees, LED lighting up for debate in consultation sessions that begin Monday Braedon Clark

halifax@metronews.ca

Three public meetings have been scheduled to address proposed changes to the municipality’s subdivision bylaw, because concerns were raised by developers and HRM staff. The most significant proposal could be a plea from developers to alter a two per cent inspection fee charged by the municipality during subdivision road construction that they say is too steep. The two per cent is collected up front and held until the exact cost of construction is known, a process that may

cause developers “undue financial strain,” according to a municipality fact sheet. Other items up for review include landscaping requirements, the role of utility companies in the subdivision approval process and fees for installing LED streetlights. While many of the proposed changes are minor, it’s still important to develop sustainably, according to Tristan Cleveland, coordinator for Our HRM Alliance. “It is absolutely crucial that development pays for itself,” Cleveland said. “In some places it costs the city and taxpayers more to develop than in others.” Cleveland said that areas with existing infrastructure — like sewer, water and road service — are more cost-effective for development than breaking ground in previously undeveloped areas. “Development fees should be lowest where it costs the least to taxpayers, in existing

neighbourhoods and the downtown core,” Cleveland said. He added that Halifax is lagging behind other Canadian cities when it comes to adjusting development costs to particular locations. On the subject of green space — one of the proposed changes — Cleveland said it’s critical that parkland be connected to create natural “corridors,” rather than isolated in individual patches of green. Requests for comment from both city councillors and the Urban Development Institute on the bylaw changes were not returned at press time. The public meetings will be held Aug. 11, 18 and 20 in Dartmouth, Bedford, and Halifax, respectively. A review of the subdivision bylaw began in February after the release of a staff report on the subject. The existing bylaw was originally passed in 2006 as part of a larger regional plan. An online survey is available for those interested in commenting on the proposed changes, in addition to mail, email or fax responses. The deadline is Sept. 5.

McCain Foods is blaming a shift in the market for french fries and the stronger Canadian dollar for its decision to close a plant in Prince Edward Island. When the plant in BordenCarleton shuts down at the end of October, 121 jobs will be lost.

The company says there has been a shift in demand for its french fries from North America to other parts of the world, which was a factor in its decision. The New Brunswick-based food company says production at its plant in P.E.I. has dropped by two-thirds over the last dec-

ade and it’s now the smallest and least utilized factory in McCain’s network of facilities across North America. McCain says it is offering early retirement benefits and severance packages that exceed those required by the law to its employees. The Canadian Press

Shells hit residential buildings, hospital in rebel stronghold, killing four people NATO’s chief defied mounting Russian belligerence Thursday with a pledge to provide assistance to Ukraine, which is battling to quash an insurgency being waged by pro-Russia rebels in the country’s east. The show of support from Anders Fogh Rasmussen comes as government troops increasingly focus their push to claw back rebel-held territory on the stronghold of Donetsk. Ukraine appears to be ratcheting up the urgency of its onslaught against the backdrop of an alleged escalation of Russian troop presence on the border. That deployment has led many to speculate Russia may pursue an incursion under

Canada is sending non-lethal military equipment to Ukraine to help the country protect its eastern border against Russian aggression, Defence Minister Rob Nicholson said Thursday. Nicholson made the announcement at a military base in Trenton, Ont., where a CC-130J Hercules plane loaded with “non-kinetic military equipment” was set to take off for the first in a series of military transport flights.

aggression, NATO is working even more closely with Ukraine to reform its armed forces and defence institutions,” Rasmussen said. In a sign of sagging morale among rebel forces, separatist authorities issued a desperate plea for assistance Thursday, complaining in a statement that a “critical situation has developed with the militia’s food, uniform and ammunition supplies.” Mortar fire struck the Vishnevskiy Hospital on Thursday morning, killing one and wounding five others, Donetsk city council spokesman Maxim Rovensky said. will allow Ukrainian forces to better detect and track the movement of illicit goods and people, Nicholson said. “Ukraine has asked for this and once again we are delivering,” he said. “The Putin regime has not provided any indication they are prepared to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity or use their control over Russian-backed agents to end the violence in Ukraine.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Jonestown massacre. Nine victims’ remains found in former funeral home The cremated remains of nine victims of a 1978 mass cult suicide-murder in Jonestown, Guyana, have turned up in a former funeral home in Delaware, officials said Thursday. The state Division of Forensic Science has taken possession of the remains, discovered at the former Minus Funeral Home in Dover, and is working to make identifications and notify relatives, the agency and Dover police said in a statement. On Nov. 18, 1978, gunmen from the Peoples Temple cult ambushed and killed U.S. Rep. Leo Ryan of California, three newsmen and a defector from the group at a remote jungle airstrip. Cult leader Jim Jones then orchestrated a ritual of mass murder and suicide at the temple’s nearby agricultural commune, ordering followers to drink cyanide-laced grape punch. Most of them complied, although survivors described some people being shot, injected with poison, or forced to drink the deadly beverage

Last week, the Delaware agency responded to a request to check the former funeral home after 38 containers of remains were discovered inside. Thirty-three containers were marked and identified. They spanned a period from about 1970 to the 1990s and included the Jonestown remains.

The Yazidi people, members of an ancient religion in Iraq, are trapped by al-Qaida splinter group ISIL The prospect of a humanitarian catastrophe could soon pull the United States one step deeper into Iraq, several years after its troops exited a long and painful war there. President Barack Obama announced Thursday night he had authorized the U.S. military to launch targeted airstrikes if needed, to protect Americans

from Islamic militants in northern Iraq. He also said the U.S. military had carried out airdrops of humanitarian aid to Iraqi religious minorities trapped by the alQaida splinter group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The food and water supplies were delivered to the tens of thousands of Yazidis trapped on a mountain. The Yazidis, who follow an ancient religion with ties to Zoroastrianism, fled their homes after ISIL group issued an ultimatum to convert to Islam, pay a religious fine, flee their homes or face death. The Canadian government also condemned ISIL’s behaviour. On Thursday, Foreign Af-

fairs Minister John Baird said “despicable acts of violence” had displaced more than 200,000 people in the past week. Obama, who has staked much of his legacy as president on ending the Iraq war, acknowledged that the prospect of a new round of U.S. military action would be a cause for concern among many Americans. He vowed anew not to put American combat troops back on the ground in Iraq and said there was no U.S. military solution to the crisis. “As commander in chief, I will not allow the United States to be drawn into fighting another war in Iraq,” Obama said. Hamas threatens to resume rocket attacks if Gaza blockade not lifted With a deadline looming hours away, Hamas on Thursday rejected Israeli demands it disarm and threatened to resume its rocket attacks if its demands for lifting a crippling blockade on Gaza were not met. The hardline stance, voiced by a senior Hamas official at the group’s first rally since a ceasefire in the Gaza war took effect on Tuesday, signalled that indirect negotiations in Cairo over a permanent truce in Gaza

were not making headway. A text message from Hamas’ military wing, the Izzedine alQassam Brigades, warned there would be no extension of the ceasefire if there was no agreement to permanently lift the blockade enforced by Israel and Egypt since the militant group overran Gaza in 2007. Abu Obeida, the al-Qassam spokesman, appeared on the group’s Al-Aqsa TV station and said Hamas was “ready to go to

war again.” Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed a tough reaction if Hamas renews hostilities. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon weighed in again on the Hamas-Israel conflict, demanding an end to what he called the senseless cycle of suffering, telling the General Assembly that “the massive deaths and destruction in Gaza have shocked and shamed the world.” The Associated Press

Tribunal convicts two leaders of Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge Reign of terror. By 1979, which saw the end of the fanatical Khmer Rouge movement, nearly a quarter of the country’s population was dead They were leaders of Cambodia’s infamous Khmer Rouge, the fanatical communist movement behind a 1970s reign of terror that transformed this entire Southeast Asian nation into a ruthless slave state — a place where cities were emptied of their inhabitants, religion and schools were banned, and anyone deemed a threat was executed. When the nightmare ended in 1979, close to two million people were dead — a quarter of Cambodia’s population at the time. On Thursday, a UN-backed tribunal convicted two of the once all-powerful men of crimes against humanity in

the first and possibly the last verdicts to be issued against the group’s aging, top members. Although survivors welcomed the decision to impose life sentences against Khieu Samphan, an 83-year-old former head of state, and Nuon Chea, the movement’s 88-yearold chief ideologue, they also say justice has come far too late and is simply not adequate. “Nothing can compare to the immense suffering they imposed, no sentence can be enough,” said Youk Chhang, who heads the Documentation Center of Cambodia, which has collected more than a million documents related to the Khmer Rouge terror. There was no visible reaction from either of the accused when the decisions were announced. Defence lawyers insisted the case was not over and vowed to appeal within 30 days. Summarizing the verdict, chief judge Nil Nonn said the defendants were part of “a joint criminal enterprise” that launched “a widespread

ZMapp. ‘Virtually no doses’ of experimental drug available for Africans Africans seeking a drug to help contain the Ebola virus will have to wait months before an experimental treatment used on two infected Americans is produced even in small amounts, officials said. And there are no guarantees that the medication known as ZMapp would help curb the spread of the dreaded disease, which starts with a fever and body aches and sometimes progresses to serious bleeding. Supplies of the drug are limited. It has never been tested for safety or effectiveness in humans. The health minister of Nigeria, one of the four countries where Ebola has broken out, told a news conference in his country that he had asked the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about access to the drug. A CDC spokesman said Wednesday “there are virtually no doses available.” The lack of wider availability “shows simply that white patients and black patients do not have the same value in the eyes of world medicine,” said

Earlier this week, the CDC director emphasized that it’s impossible to know whether ZMapp helped the sick American aid workers. “Until we do a study, we don’t know if it helps, if it hurts or if it doesn’t make any difference,” Tom Frieden told a health symposium in Kentucky. Some health experts fear that debate over extremely limited supplies of the drug will distract from more tried-and-true practices. The Associated Press

Northwestern B.C. Gitxsan Nation orders foresters, fishermen, CN Rail off lands It’s business as usual in a large swath of land in northwestern British Columbia, despite escalating tensions spurred by an eviction order from the Gitxsan First Nation. The First Nation issued notice last month to sport fishermen, forest companies and Canadian National Railway that they would have to stop all activities in the 33,000 square kilometres of its territories near Terrace, B.C. by Aug. 4. The First Nation has been in a protracted treaty dispute with the federal and provincial governments. G20 class-action lawsuit OK to move ahead, Ontario court rules

An Ontario court is allowing hundreds of people detained during the G20 summit in Toronto four years ago to proceed with a class-action lawsuit. The suit was stalled last year when a judge ruled it couldn’t proceed as a class action because its “broad, sweeping nature” was viewed as problematic. But a Divisional Court panel hearing an appeal of

that ruling has now cleared the way for the suit to move forward. In a unanimous decision, Justice Ian Nordheimer wrote on behalf of the panel that police actions alleged in the suit, if proven, would have “violated a basic tenet of how police in a free and democratic society are expected to conduct themselves.” More than 1,000 people

were detained by police during the G20 summit in June 2010 after protesters using so-called Black Bloc tactics broke away from a peaceful rally and ran through the downtown, smashing windows and burning police cruisers. The vast majority of those detained were released without charge within 24 hours. the canadian press

Families welcome at bedside for crises Break from tradition. Experts claim benefits to not shooing family away during patient resuscitation efforts When a code blue is announced in hospital and a resuscitation team rushes to a patient’s side, tradition has dictated that family members get out of the way. But that notion is slowly being replaced by a new model in which family members are given the option — sometimes even encouragement — to remain near the bedside. Among centres embracing the idea is Calgary’s recently opened acute-care hospital, South Health Campus, where staff make sure family members know they are welcome to be present if they wish. Joanne Ganton, manager of the Patient and Family Centred Care program at South Health Campus, said the idea raised a number of objections, including that it would be too traumatic for families, there would not be enough room to work and there was a danger of a person fainting, thereby creating

another patient. However, research and experience show those fears haven’t been borne out, said Ganton. Quite the opposite, agreed Stephen Samis, vice-president of programs at the Canadian Foundation for Health Care Improvement. “They’re less traumatized than if they’ve been waiting out in the corridors and having somebody come out and tell them, ‘Well, here’s what happened,’” Samis said. He added that research suggests patient outcomes are better, care is improved and there are fewer errors. While staff may experience some performance anxiety, Ganton said loved ones are typically focused on the patient. “They just want to be close, because your biggest fear is, ‘I don’t want him to die alone. I don’t want him to die with strangers,’” she said. And if a patient doesn’t survive, she said family members often feel that if “he could have just heard my voice, felt my touch, I know that he would have known I was there for him and maybe he would have held on.” The Canadian Press

Flight delays, cancellations up for U.S. airlines in 2014 More U.S. flights arrived late in June than the month before, continuing a string of poor performances by U.S. airlines. The government says that in the first six months of the year, the rate of late flights was the highest since 2008 and cancellations the highest since 2000. The U.S. Department of Transportation said Thursday that among airlines reporting, 71.8 per cent of domestic flights arrived on time in June, down from 76.9

per cent the month before and 71.9 per cent in June 2013. Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines, which aren’t as exposed to bad weather in the eastern and central parts of the country, had the best on-time ratings. Delta Air Lines led among the biggest carriers. Regional airlines Envoy and ExpressJet and big carriers Southwest and American were at the bottom of the rankings. All were late more than 30 per cent of the time.

American and Envoy are both owned by American Airlines Group Inc., whose chief operating officer, Robert Isom, said that the company’s network suffered more than rivals from bad weather. Jean Medina, a spokeswoman for Airlines for America, said weather has been the biggest factor all year, with 17,370 weather-related cancellations in the first half of 2014 compared with 11,480 in the same period last year. the associated press

Jury convicts U.S. man in teen’s death A jury convicted a U.S. man of second-degree murder and manslaughter on Thursday after he shot a drunk, unarmed black woman in the face on his porch last year after she pounded on his door. It rejected his claim that he was afraid for his life and had acted in self-defence. Theodore Wafer shot Renisha McBride through a screen door on Nov. 2, hours after she crashed into a parked car

near his house. No one knows why she ended up at the home, although prosecutors speculated that the 19-yearold may have been seeking help. “She just wanted to go home,” prosecutor Patrick Muscat said during closing arguments, holding the shotgun Wafer used to kill McBride. “She ended up in the morgue with bullets in her head and in her brain be-

cause the defendant picked up this shotgun, released this safety, raised it at her, pulled the trigger and blew her face off.’’ Wafer, 55, who had been free on bond, was also convicted on a gun-related charge and was ordered to jail to await his sentence. He could face up to life in prison with the possibility of parole, but it is likely his sentence will be much shorter.

Beginning with Florida in 2005, at least 22 states have expanded the self-defence principle known as the “castle doctrine,” the premise that a person has the right to defend his or her home against attack. The laws make it easier for a person to shoot someone and avoid prosecution by saying they felt an imminent danger. The Associated Press

Surrogacy targeted in drafted Thai legislation Commercial surrogate pregnancy. Thailand moves to ban practice after child with Down syndrome was allegedly abandoned Thailand pushed to ban commercial surrogacy Thursday as a case involving nine surrogate babies allegedly with the same Japanese father emerged only days after a furor over the alleged abandonment of a surrogate-born baby with Down syndrome. The discovery of the nine babies being cared for by nannies in a Bangkok condominium followed accusations by a Thai surrogate that an Australian couple had left the boy with Down syndrome to be raised by her, while taking home his healthy twin sister. The scandal has focused global attention on the largely unregulated industry in Thailand, which authorities say became a go-to destination for commercial surrogacy

after well-off countries tightened their own laws. Officials said Thursday that the draft of a law banning surrogacy was submitted to the junta’s head of legal and justice affairs and will be forwarded to the interim legislature for consideration next week. “Now is good timing, as the steps (toward passing the law) have been completed,” said Rarinthip Sirorat, of the Social Development and Human Security Ministry, “The purpose of this law is to give maximum benefits to the surrogate babies.” According to the draft, the new law would prohibit commercial surrogacy and those violating the law will face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $6,200 US. Agencies, advertisers or recruiters of surrogate mothers will face up to five years in jail and a fine of up to $3,100 US. The craft beer boom ‘Golden age’. Are microbreweries a fad that’ll fizzle out or a business that’ll replace beer-making behemoths?

Tom Green’s first sips of beer came courtesy of his dad, Richard — sort of. “When you first start drinking,” the Canadian comedian recalls in a phone interview with Metro, “you sneak whatever your dad has in the fridge.” Growing up in the nation’s capital meant sneaking the nation’s top brands, namely Molson’s Export and Canadian, and Labatt’s 50 and Blue. When he started buying his own beer, the funny man considered himself a bit of a connoisseur. “I always went towards the craft — Rickard’s Red and Alexander Keith’s, good Canadian beers,” says Green, who now lives full-time in L.A. Back in the 1980s and ’90s, choice was limited. New microbreweries started, then went flat fast. These days, the options are seemingly endless. There are saisons for patio season, pumpkin ales come fall, stouts for the holiday season and maple syrup concoctions in the spring. We are currently in a “golden age” of craft beer, says Joel Manning, the brewmaster at Mill Street Brewery in Toronto, who has been working in the business since 1986. Over the past four years, he says, an average of one new microbrewery pops up in Ontario each month. It’s a similar story across the country, from Nova Scotia to British Columbia. Hopped up on going local Green teamed up with Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co. in Vankleek Hill, Ont., a onelight town about an hour east of Ottawa, to make and sell The Tom Green Beer. The beer bottles, bearing a beautiful illustration of the comedy legend with one eyebrow cocked, seem like an elaborate prank. But it’s actually a serious award-winning milk stout, inspired by the milk gags Green used to pull on his Rogers cable access show before he hit the big time. It’s this attention to detail of what’s on, as well as in, the bottles that has led the fatherson team of Tim and Steve Beauchense to big-time success.

wide in fiscal 2013, according to company reports. Meanwhile, Labatt Breweries of Canada is sticking with its tried-and-true formula — largely staying away from the move to stronger flavoured beers. The brewer, founded by John Labatt in 1847 in London, Ont., eventually merged with Belgium-based brand Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2008. Canada’s No. 1 brand is a hair ahead of Molson with about 40 per cent of the market, according to a company report.

Starting a microbrewery takes skill, and perhaps a bit of liquid courage. Granville Island Brewing Co. (GIB) in Vancouver has managed to stay in the beer biz for 30 years and counting. Here’s some key ingredients for brewing up success. • The lightbulb moment: In the early ’80s, Mitch Taylor and Bill Harvey were inspired by the beer culture in Germany and Belgium and decided to try to bring it to British Columbia.

Beau’s (a shortening of their surname) launched on Canada Day in 2006 and is now served in about 1,200 restaurants and sold in roughly 400 Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) stores. “This is part of the local food movement,” says Steve, explaining the phenomenal growth of his certified organic brewery. “People want to have authentic food and beer.” Drinking beer has always

By 2010, consumption had dropped to 73.86 litres per capita, with many opting for wine instead, according to Statistics Canada. microbrew. Sales of craft beer have increased by 1,800 per cent to approximately $50 million over the past 10 years, according to a spokesperson with the LCBO. In B.C., sales from breweries producing less than 15,000 hectolitres have more than doubled since 2009 to $67.9 million, reveals a spokesperson with B.C.’s liquor distribution branch. It used to be men, like Green’s dad, would buy “yel-

low, fizzy beer” by the case, for life, from the dominant Canadian brands. “Most people now have 10 to 12 beers on rotation,” says Manning. The big guys react (or not) Molson has woken up to this sobering reality. The iconic brand, started by John Molson in 1786 in Montreal, has heavily relied on nationalism to build loyalty. The average clean-cut Joe reciting the ‘I am Canadian’ rant in a plaid shirt in the early 2000s was the Platonic ideal of the Molson customer. Then, Canada’s brewery merged with American behemoth Coors to form Molson Coors Brewing Co. in 2005. While Canadian guys in 2014 are still partial to plaid, the young ones also tend to have a craft beer from a local brewery in their hands. This shift led Molson Coors to set up a craft beer division in 2011, after acquiring two top microbrewers — Ontario’s Creemore Springs and B.C.’s Granville Island Brewing Co. Molson Coors had about 39 per cent of the national market and had net sales of $4.21 billion US world-

It’s a never-ending party? Men and women of all ages are seeking out the next big thing. Beer has shed its stereotypical hoser image, immortalized by Bob and Doug McKenzie on 1980s comedy show SCTV. CanLit goddess Margaret Atwood has a gruit ale (herb and berry-infused) with Beau’s. Rock god Sam Roberts has a “session ale” with Toronto’s Spearhead Brewing Company. Hipsters with nothing more than a home brew kit and a dream are giving it a go. The money is flowing, but so is the hubris. The story of Mill Street starting as “three guys and a truck” in 2002 is intoxicating, but Manning warns some upstarts won’t make it. Small outfits can have issues with quality control and some lack a basic understanding of the business side. The Beauchesnes have been able to steadily build their brewery by mixing the father’s business background, with the son’s passion for the product. Having a national comedy treasure hock his eponymous beer on Jimmy Fallon’s TV show last year didn’t hurt, either. Beau’s is now available in New York state and there are plans to expand into Quebec. Success is giving microbrewers a nice buzz, but is the trend close to tapped out? “The popularity of craft beer is still growing,” asserts Green. “People like original things.” Raise a glass of (craft) beer and cheers to that.

Confiscated stuffed animals are on display during a news conference in Carson, Calif., Wednesday. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized nearly $9,000 worth of stuffed-and-mounted animals. NICK UT/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

From forced labour to fun in the sun ANDREW FIFIELD

andrew.fifield@metronews.ca

Maybe they shouldn’t have marked the would-be contraband ‘animal heads’? Federal customs officials at the Port of Los Angeles have seized about $9,000 worth of mounted and stuffed wildlife “hunting trophies” that lacked proper export permits. The collection was on display Wednesday during a news conference at a Carson warehouse. The items, packed in seven boxes as part of a consolidated shipment declared

to be household goods, were confiscated July 23. “Animal heads” was written on one of the boxes. Investigators said at least some of the items were purchased from a liquidator in Texas by a 44-year-old man from the Philippines who was in the United States for the first time with his wife and two children on a family vacation. Officials said the man is cooperating and is not believed to have been aware of the needed permits. The items will probably be donated to zoos, universities or other schools for educational uses, officials said. THE DAILY BREEZE

The goods

• The collection included a bear skull and full-body mounts of a bobcat, a lynx with a bird and a baboon, all four of which are protected species. • Other specimens included deer, kudu and impala antlers and horns, shoulder mounts of a goat and a zebra, a wildebeest, an African antelope, African gazelle, two smallmouth bass and an alligator.

Rummu is an abandoned Soviet-era prison that also served as a forced labour mine near Tallinn, Estonia. In a rare example of poor Soviet planning, it turns out all of that mandatory mining left the quarry prone to flooding from underground waters. And that’s exactly what happened, transforming what was once a hellish crime against nature into one of the most unusual and beautiful beach bum meccas we’ve ever seen. It’s probably totally spooky when the sun goes down, though. (XL-Studios/YouTube)

A big scoop of comfort film Reel Guys

Synopsis

The Hundred-Foot Journey is a feel-good movie about an Indian family who moves to a small town in France to open a restaurant. Across the street is a Michelin-starred French eatery run with an iron fist by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). Cultures and personalities clash, but soon Hassan Kadam’s (Manish Dayal) talent leads him on a journey. First he crosses the hundred feet between the restaurant his father (Om Puri) owns to Madame Mallory’s kitchen, then to Paris and ultimately to his real passion. • Richard: ••••• • Mark: •••••

The Hundred-Foot Journey. The story runs a little bland at times, but Indian actor Om Puri adds some fine flavour Richard: Mark, the last time director Lasse Hallström went all Food Network on us, the result was the 2000 bonbon Chocolat, a comic story with a bittersweet edge. He’s revisiting similar ground here, mixing gastroporn, good old-fashioned romance and cross-cultural farce. Despite its predictability, The Hundred-Foot Journey’s collection of characters keeps

things lively and amusing and the food looks so good you’ll wish the movie was in Smell-O-Vision. I thought it was an enjoyable film about passion; the passion for food, passion for culture but most of all, passion for life. What did you think? Mark: Richard, I wouldn’t use the word passion to describe this movie. It was full of warmth, and it glowed from the sun-dappled shots of the French countryside to the sun-dappled shots of the delicious food to the sun-dappled shots of Helen Mirren’s profile contemplating Septuagenarian sex. But passion? If this mov-

ie about food were a food, it would be a nice custard, served at room temperature.

allowing the actress to subtly reveal layers of character.

RC: Perhaps there wasn’t passion of the Gordon Ramsay style, but I thought the characters, particularly the young leads, brought enthusiasm not only to their romance but to their rivalry as well. As Marguerite, Charlotte Le Bon moves beyond simply playing the romantic counterpart and puts herself and her dream of being a chef first. I liked that she was spunkier than you often see in a movie like this. Ditto Mirren. As Madame comes to respect and then like her new neighbours, her ice queen demeanour slowly melts,

MB: None of them impressed me Richard, not even Mirren. The one actor that did blow me away was the great Indian actor Om Puri, whose name even sounds like a fine dish, served with a side of raita. I didn’t find much that surprised me in the script either, although I wasn’t expecting the young Indian chef to cross the road and work at Mirren’s classical French restaurant. Whether or not you see him as a contemptible sellout or not probably depends on your attitude towards

Batman V Superman film release bumped up Superhero showdown. Warner shifts date to avoid competing with Captain America To avoid going head to head with Captain America 3 in theaters, Warner Bros has decided to shift the release of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice forward by more than a month. Initially, both films were set to hit theatres on May 6, 2016, meaning that the superheroes would have given each other some serious competition at the box office. Since Disney refused to change the date of its next Captain America movie, Warner Bros revised the production timeline on its DC feature and announced the new release date of March 25, 2016. Now rather than clashing directly with a rival superhero, Batman and Superman will be in theatres at the

Aubrey Plaza, star of the new zombie rom-com Life After Beth, is a liar. Plaza says the story of Zack (Dane DeHaan) and his recently deceased girlfriend Beth (Plaza) who refuses to stay dead is a metaphor “for a breakup and how when you break up with someone, it’s like they die. was really into Judy Garland and Bette Midler. I had a sophisticated gay man’s taste at an early age.” Plaza was also obsessed with Saturday Night Live, par-

ticularly with the female cast members like Molly Shannon, Tina Fey and her current Parks and Rec co-star Amy Poehler, a person she now calls a “close friend” and the nicest and funniest person in the room. “She is like a glowing orb of light.” Her take on Poehler is believable, but when asked about her movie’s message, she lies again. “I want people to see zombies in a whole new light and think before they shoot them in the brains,” she says. “If the zombie apocalypse happens I want the world to remember, ‘These were humans at one point...’ No, I think they should just shoot them. Katie Holmes finds it hard to play it flat The Giver. Actress had difficulty going against the urge to emote in sci-fi tale about a utopia with no pain Katie Holmes is the first to admit that she found the idea of playing one of the citizens in the sci-fi allegory The Giver a bit of a head-scratcher as far as acting exercises go. “It was a really challenging role to play because it’s this utopian society, this alternate reality. There’s no emotion, there’s no pain, there’s a great deal of security and safety, but to play that as an actor is interesting because we like to emote,” she says. “They don’t have any emotions, but I think that they’re human after all, so I always believed that the characters were capable of love.”

Of course, the pedigree of the project — based on Lois Lowry’s award-winning, bestselling young adult novel — didn’t hurt. “I heard about the project and I heard it was (director) Phil Noyce and Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep,” she says. “I was not familiar with the book, so I read the book along with the script and I thought it was a really powerful story.” While it’s been 16 years since Holmes shot to fame barely out of her teens on Dawson’s Creek, the actress has no regrets about finding success so early. “I feel really lucky for all the opportunities that I’ve had. I think it’s great to start young because you learn the business quickly. It’s exciting,” she says. And she still keeps up with her co-stars, she insists. “I just saw Michelle (Williams) in Cabaret. She’s amazing in it,” Holmes says of her Dawson’s Creek costar’s current Broadway gig. Speaking of Broadway, professionally Holmes has been a bit quiet since Batman Begins

Metro World News in Hollywood

Megan Fox has a bone to pick with the press. “I like to be open with you guys and I like to be honest.

“I hate being disingenuous,” she tells the press while promoting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, in which she plays journalist April O’Neil. “But ... so much of what I say gets sensationalized. Even when I’m trying to be straightforward and honest and my comments are innocent, inevitably they get turned into something salacious ... “You guys should all behave yourselves and be nice when you report on things that I say.” Far be it from us to add to Ms. Fox’s concerns, so here, in her own words, are some of the straightforward, hon-

On what playing a journalist taught her about journalism... “I realized that your job is much more tedious than maybe I realized previously. You’ve really got to keep track of a lot of s---.”

Megan Fox tries life on the other side of the camera, playing reporter April O’Neil in the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, which opens on Friday. CONTRIBUTED

On playing scantily clad characters...

On the state of journalism...

“I don’t mind doing that stuff. I think that’s been a part of being an actress in Hollywood since the beginning. I don’t feel ashamed or like I can’t be taken seriously while also wearing a tank top. And if you don’t take me seriously while I’m wearing a tank top, that’s your f---ing problem, not mine.”

“I’m not trying to tell you guys that you’re becoming obsolete, but kind of everyone with an iPhone is a journalist in their own way now — especially because we live in a tabloid culture. When you watch CNN and they’re giving you news based on tweets that people are sending out, you realize that society is really changing. The collective public have a really big voice now that they didn’t previously have, and they’re influencing the trajectory of how we are socially and with one another. I don’t know, I’m going to start getting metaphysical with you.”

On acting opposite CGI characters... “When we were doing Transformers, Shia and I were sort of just screaming things at the sky. We had no references at all at that point — because how can you? I mean, you’re dealing with, like, 30-foot robots.”

Prince William’s got a brand new day job Prince William is taking a new job: Air ambulance pilot. Britain’s royal officials announced yesterday that starting in September, the royal will train for about five months as a helicopter pilot with East Anglian Air Ambulance. If successful, he will join the charity group, based in Cambridge, next spring. The stint will be William’s main job, although he will continue to take on royal duties and engagements. His duties will include flying day and night shifts, and working with medics at emergencies ranging from road accidents to heart attacks. “The pilot is part of the team and he will be looking after patients with conditions that would be hor-

rifying for many, and some pilots may not like that very much,” says Alastair Wilson, the charity’s medical director. “Compared to his role as a search-and-rescue pilot, he may be dealing with more injury patients than he is used to, but I’m sure he will adapt very well to that.” The job will build on William’s experience as a Royal Air Force search-andrescue pilot, a position he qualified for in 2012 after serving other military duties. He left that job last September, shortly after his and wife Kate’s first son, Prince George, was born. William will be paid a salary for the new job, which he will donate in full to charity.

Katherine Heigl is looking to rewrite history in her ongoing image rehabilitation efforts while promoting her new TV series, State of Affairs. The former Grey’s Anatomy star now insists she left the popular medical drama not because of dissatisfaction with the writing, but because she didn’t like being a working mom. “I felt like my priorities were messed up. I was putting so much time and energy into just my work, but I was raised (to believe) that family comes first,” Heigl tells Us Weekly. “I would come home angry and frustrated that I’d missed everything with my kid that day. I didn’t get to wake her up from her nap or do bath time or bedtime. I’d have to sneak into her room and kiss her

when she was sleeping, hoping not to wake her up.” All perfectly valid reasons, granted. But she seems not to realize that all the stuff she used to say — like, “I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination” — is actually written down somewhere.

Somerhalder’s charity sucks at helping Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder may not be as charitable as he comes off, if recently uncovered tax documents for his conservation charity are any indication. The Ian Somerhalder Foundation works to “promote the conservation of natural resources” and “provide relief to the poor, distressed or underprivileged.” But in 2012, the foundation took in $365,000 in donations while paying out only one grant — for $550 — to the Best Friends Animal Society and Wildlife Rehab, according to TMZ. Nearly $21,000 went to office expenses and rent, travel accounted for $20,000, and $153,000 was lumped together as “other expenses.”

The wedding is on, apparently, as George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin have posted the legally required wedding banns at London’s Chelsea Town Hall, indicating they’re planning to get hitched imminently, according to People magazine. A spokesman at the register office at London’s Chelsea Old Town Hall confirmed Thursday that the couple posted a legal document for

a British national who is marrying abroad. A photo of the notice published by the Daily Mirror showed the pair’s names, ages and occupations. It also showed they plan a wedding in Italy. The document was taken down after being on display for the requisite 21 days. It is the second marriage for Clooney, 53, and the first for Alamuddin, 36. WITH FILES FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Cherry Tomato Tart. Instead of standing in a hot kitchen, spend time with your guests RICARDO COOKS Chef Ricardo Ricardo Magazine

I love to impress my guests, and I also love to spend time with them. Because I don’t want to waste hours in the kitchen instead of enjoying their company, I assemble this recipe ahead of time. You can replace the feta cheese with a ball of fresh mozzarella, sliced. In this case, you

may need to season with a bit more salt. You can also substitute the rectangular tart pan for a pie plate that’s 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep and 9 inches (23 cm) in diameter. Pastry 1. In a food processor, pulse the flour and the butter until the butter is the size of small peas. Add the milk and pulse until a ball begins to form. Remove the dough from the processor and shape into a square with your hands.

2. On floured work surface, roll out the dough into a 16 x 6-inch (40 x 15 cm) rectangle. Line in a 14 x 4-inch (35 x 10 cm) rectangular tart pan. Place in freezer for 15 minutes.

3. With the rack in the lowest position, preheat the oven to 400 F (200 C). Filling 1. In a bowl, combine the milk and cornstarch with a whisk. Whisk in the eggs and herbs. Lightly season with salt and pepper. Pour into the crust. Sprinkle with the cheese. Carefully top with the tomato clusters. LIFE

Though it makes as diverse a selection of wines as any part of Italy, the northeastern region of Veneto is best known for its reds, with the viticultural area of Valpolicella arguably as famous as Tuscany’s Chianti in the minds of wine lovers. Typically bright and refreshing, the table wines from Valpolicella are easydrinking and grill-friendly. Where things get interesting is when winemakers dry grapes (a process called appassimento). The output of the raisinlike fruit creates richly textured wines called amarone (drier), recioto (sweeter) and ripasso (a wine fermented with the grape mass left over from the production of the other two). Masi Agricola pioneered many of the techniques used in making wines from dried red grapes and is trying them out on white wines. Its 2012 Masianco Pinot Grigio & Verduzzo ($15.00 - $18.99) blends freshly picked grapes with some that see a light drying. The result balances ripe aromatics with citrusy flavours and makes a perfect match with grilled white meats and fresh fish. PRICES

Herd swap Lovell with camp looming QMJHL. Mooseheads send defenceman ‘closer to home’ with Chicoutimi Saguenéens Blueliner Brian Lovell is leaving Nova Scotia and heading home to Quebec. The Halifax Mooseheads announced Thursday they’ve traded the 19-year-old defenceman to the Chicoutimi Saguenéens in exchange for a sixth-round selection at the 2015 QMJHL entry draft. Herd general manager Cam Russell said the Châteauguay native asked him “to possibly move for personal reasons.” “He wanted to be a little closer to home,” Russell said Thursday. “We tried it at draft, it didn’t happen, but ... that’s how it started.” The six-foot, 211-pound Lovell played 81 games in two seasons with the Mooseheads, notching 11 points and collecting 89 penalty minutes. Halifax originally drafted him in the third round of the 2011 QMJHL draft. “He’s a great kid,” Russell said, adding the Halifax club wishes him “all the best with his new opportunity” within the Q league. He said “it’s hard to say” whether there will be any

In fact, there are more open spots on the team this year than there have been for the past three seasons, he said, adding that’s about three

First provincial camp in Bedford Nineteen players from across the province take to the ice Friday and Saturday at the BMO Centre in Bedford for the inaugural Hockey Nova Scotia Sledge Hockey High Performance Program camp. Although Nova Scotia has three different sledge hockey programs, based out of Halifax, Kentville and Sydney, this marks the first time that players will come together to form a provincial squad, a Hockey Nova Scotia news release said. “This program will give our best players an opportunity to compete against the top talent from other parts of the country,” Hockey Nova Scotia president Randy Pulsifer said Thursday in the release. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga stuns top-seeded Novak Djokovic Canada’s Milos Raonic advanced to the quarter-finals at the Rogers Cup on Thursday with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Julien Benneteau of France. The sixth seed from Thornhill, Ont., used his impressive power game to his advantage on a comfortable, breezy evening at Rexall Centre. Raonic showed off his booming serve to take the first game at love and his punishing ground strokes gave Benneteau trouble throughout the match.

Aries

March 21 - April 20 You are a rebel by nature and with the Sun linked to Uranus, planet of upheavals, this weekend you will do something outrageous. It may not do much for your rep but you’ll have fun.

April 21 - May 21 It may seem as if the odds are stacked against you but the planets suggest you can easily break through any obstacles that are in your path.

Gemini

May 22 - June 21 You get a kick out of being different and will upset those you consider to be too conservative in their thinking. But when you dish it out you have to be ready to take.

Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 Some of the best partnerships are between people who appear to have little in common, so don’t turn down an invitation just because it’s from someone you find weird.

Sagittarius

Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 This is the perfect time to take chances and make changes. There may be occasions when you push your luck too far but no harm will come of it.
