Surprise! Digging by Union Station may go on and on Big towers proposed. Metrolinx vows current construction ‘mayhem’ will be cleared before more digging starts Major office towers could be coming to an area already plagued by overlong construction and heavy traffic near Union Station. The project, which is in the preliminary stages of zoning review by lot owners Ivanhoe Cambridge, could bring at least one 48-storey office tower to the hub of Toronto commuting at 45 Bay St. and the block to the north across from Union Station. Renderings of the plans — which have since been removed from the website of developer Hines Interests

Limited Partnership along with a page dedicated to the project — show a three-tower development across Bay from the Air Canada Centre, where a parking lot now stands. The tallest tower, which appears to be higher than the TD Canada Trust Tower, soars up from the current GO bus terminal and is linked to a 48-storey tower at the Bay Street lot by a “retail podium” above the Union Station train tracks. A third smaller tower is built up from the roof of the Dominion Public Building at Yonge Street. Anne Marie Aikins, spokeswoman for Metrolinx, has confirmed there is a new development in the works but couldn’t say when construction would start as it is still in the very early stages. She assures that it won’t start while Union Station is in its

current chaotic state. “We would certainly assure that this would be as painless as possible. Before our shovels even run in the ground, Union Station will be finished,” she said. “Things are moving. I know right now it looks like mayhem.” Hines spokeswoman Allison Kimmell would not elaborate on the plans. “We haven’t made a public announcement about this yet,” she said. She would also not explain why the project page was removed.

Accident

Electrocution suspected in work fatality Paramedics say a man killed in an industrial accident in Toronto may have been electrocuted. Police say the 35-year-old was working on a townhouse near Sheppard Avenue East and Meadowvale Road when the accident happened around 5 p.m. Wednesday. They say he was pronounced dead at the scene. 680NEWS/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

An artist’s rendition of Metrolinx’s new UP (Union-Pearson) express terminal. The terminal at the airport is already complete. Soon commuters will see the new airport trains being tested on Toronto-area tracks. The downtown terminus for the airport shuttle remains under wraps. It, too, is only weeks away from having the giant tarps pulled back to reveal the new station on the north side of the Union Station tracks, just west of the train shed. At that point the exterior construction, which began last July, will be in its final stages and crews will begin installing the interior finishes. The train service linking the country’s two busiest transportation hubs is prepared to open next spring. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Cyclists ‘doored’ dozens of times since last year Stats. Police started keeping track of collisions between bike riders and car doors in November Cyclists have reported being “doored” 62 times since November, according to Toronto police, the first public tally of a statistic the force began tracking last year. “Dooring” — when a stopped car suddenly opens its door and hits a cyclist — is among the worst fears of urban bike riders. From 2012 until November 2013, Toronto police didn’t track the incidents be-

Importance of reporting

Coun. Mike Layton, who was doored last year and reported it, said cyclists should be educated on the importance of involving the police. “You have to report it to the police,” he said. Cyclists have an “obligation to make sure it shows up as a statistic.”

cause of a change in the provincial definition of a “collision.” After the Torstar News Service highlighted the statistical blind spot last year, the chair of the police services board asked the force to start tracking socalled “door prizes” again.

From Nov. 5, 2013, to Aug. 12, 2014, police received 62 dooring reports. That’s on pace to be considerably fewer than the 144 a year Toronto averaged from 2007 to 2011. That could mean the city is getting safer for cyclists. But the decline could also indicate that fewer people are calling the police when they get struck by car doors. While police provided the total number of reported dooring incidents since November, they said all other information about the accidents — their location, their severity, what type of vehicle was involved — would have to be accessed through a freedom-of-information request, which can take months, even years, to process.

The organizers of a dance party for charity in the underground parkade at Honest Ed’s scrambled to find a new venue for their event Wednesday after the bargain store’s manager pulled out of Friday night’s shindig due to “safety concerns.” Late Wednesday, party organizer Daniel Tal told the Torstar News Service they had finally clinched a new party locale and redubbed the hip-hop dance bash, “99 Problems But a Venue Ain’t One.” “We’re extremely relieved,” said Tal, 28, co-founder of Dudebox, the party-for-charity group behind the event. Proceeds from the event are to go to Wellspring, an organization that supports people with cancer and their caregivers. Their new venue is an event space at 99 Sudbury St., near Queen and Dufferin, with a capacity of 1,200, said Tal.

Justin Bull, a Toronto software developer who runs a pair of popular bike safety websites, said he thought the information should be more readily available. “The crazy, tech-savvy public like myself could see that data because we decided to check it out one day and contact (our) councillors with ideas,” he said. It is, of course, impossible to know how many unreported dooring incidents occur on Toronto’s streets, but some cycling advocates believe official figures don’t capture the scope of the problem. “Your instinct when you get doored is to make as little a deal of it as possible and get on your way,” said Bull. “That’s the Canadian way.” TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Blair not buying Doug Ford apology Retraction. Police chief against councillor’s comment to media that he’s entitled to his opinion Coun. Doug Ford says he apologizes “unequivocally” to Toronto police Chief Bill Blair, but remains “entitled” to his opinion — an impromptu retraction police spokesman Mark Pugash says the chief will not accept. Ford’s apology did satisfy the requirements the chief laid out in a notice of defamation, Pugash said Wednesday following Quoted

Coun. Doug Ford On Bill Blair’s threats of taking legal action

the councillor’s statement to reporters at city hall. Ford was served Monday evening with the notice, which demanded a full apology and retraction, which was to be agreed upon beforehand by Blair. “I apologize to the chief,” Ford said, less than 48 hours after being served with the notice. “I retract my statement.” Last week, Blair took issue with Ford saying police efforts to subpoena his brother, Mayor Rob Ford, in the case against friend Alexander “Sandro” Lisi was “payback” for not having his contract extended by the police board. Ford also accused police of leaking information about the subpoenaing to Torstar News Service. Following his midday statement to reporters Wednesday, Ford told CP24’s Stephen LeDrew that he apologized “unequivocally,” only to immediately add: “Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. And that was my opinion.” Pugash confirmed that Ford

called Blair Wednesday morning to apologize, and said Ford promised to send any statement he planned to make in writing to the chief so it could be reviewed by Blair’s lawyer. Pugash said that no statement had been received, and that he was not even aware Ford had made the apology. “My lawyer’s in the process of doing that,” Ford told CP24 after he had already given a statement to reporters. Ford said he told the chief he wants to “bury the hatchet. Let’s hang up the gloves.” He went on to say: “If I’ve impugned the chief’s reputation, he feels that, again I apologize. And I don’t know how many more times I have to apologize.” The chief, apparently, is not moving past his threats of legal action. Returning to city hall Wednesday, Ford refused to address that fact and wouldn’t say whether he planned to reissue an apology to the chief. “I’m done with this,” he told reporters. torstar news service

He’ll sing a little tune for you … at Pearson airport It was a crying kid, tired and teary-eyed, who inspired Ivan Watson to become the Singing Bagman of Pearson airport. Working as the handler to help travellers check bags as they make connections to the United States, Watson spotted the little guy as he approached with his parents. Something struck his heart, and just like his grandma would do when

he was young back home in Jamaica, Watson started to sing — a Christmas carol, because that was the season. “He stopped crying,” Watson said, remembering the little boy’s smile, a subsequent highfive and his parents’ nods of gratitude. “From that time, I said I would keep singing. As long as I’m working. Every day.”

Four years have passed since then, and now Watson can barely talk about his job without breaking into song. The 60-year-old brims with cheery energy, dimples in his cheeks as he sways to his own tune. Typically he improvises, adding soft vocal melodies to routine airport instructions like “no water, gel or lotion; no liquid in your carry on.” He’ll also

hit up some classics, like Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds and Superstition by Stevie Wonder. “This is customer service at its best,” said Tracey Cece, an operations manager at Pearson Airport. “It’s genuine. It’s coming from the heart,” she added. “It’s a wonderful thing, and I think we should all approach life like this more often.” torstar news service

Makeup free KISSes for Rock N’ Stroll and offering sleep-deprived moms and dads some parenting advice. “I think this baby’s humming Rock and Roll All Night,” a conspicuously makeup-free Simmons told Dani Newfeld, while cradling Newfeld’s asyet-unnamed day-old son. Moments later Simmons made a play to be the boy’s namesake, introducing him to the crowd as “baby Gene.”

KISS rock stars Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons made an impromptu visit to Mount Sinai’s baby unit Wednesday afternoon, snuggling infants

Simmons and Stanley, who performed at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre Tuesday night, were at the hospital briefly in support of Rock N’ Stroll, a walk launching this September to raise funds for high-risk births, Mount Sinai’s international specialty. It’s an issue Stanley, a father of four, cares deeply about. “My first-born went dir-

ectly from delivery room to ICU,” he said. “Had it not been for the kind of care that can only be given in very specific cities, one of them being Toronto, we probably would have lost my first.” Elton John, David Bowie and Slash also support the campaign. No promises on teacher benefits Premier Kathleen Wynne made no promises when asked Wednesday whether the Liberals would restore benefits Ontario’s public school teachers lost two years ago as they head into new contract talks. The governing Liberals imposed new contracts on teachers in 2012 that froze some of their wages and limited their ability to strike. Delegates attending the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario annual meeting had some pointed questions for Wynne, including one who complained that he was robbed of $10,000 in unused sick days. Wynne — a former school board trustee — says she is committed to the collective bargaining process

but would not say what’s on the table. She insists, however, that there’s no new money for compensation, as the province struggles to slay a $12.5-billion deficit. The provincial government is headed into talks with the province’s teachers, whose contracts expire on Aug. 31. The labour conflict two years ago, which included the loss of extracurricular activities, was “not a successful” bargaining process, Wynne said. “I’m not going to debate particular items,” she said. “I think there’s going to be lots of discussion at the bargaining table about a whole range of issues, and that’s where I want that discussion to happen.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Life is a highway, ride it all night long CNE 2014. Once you’re done with the rides, do it your way and check out some music at The Ex, including from Canada’s Tom Cochrane MIKE BENHAIM metronews.ca

It’s a time of year many Torontonians look forward to. The gathering of friends and strangers at the country’s greatest fair grounds in the summertime: crazy rides, stuffed animals, the scent of cotton candy and caramel apples mingled with garbage and carniesweat all add up to one thing — The Ex. For music lovers, it’s an opportunity to check out some concerts, free with the price of admission. Here are some great music acts to enjoy in the next two weeks: Friday, Aug.15 Down With Webster. Stu-

dents will leave their parents at home to enjoy some loud tunes and explicit (but relatively innocuous) lyrics.

’80s. You’ll be surprised at how many of them you didn’t even know you loved.

Thursday, Aug, 21 José Feliciano. Mainstream fans won’t know him beyond hearing Feliz Navidad every Christmas, but music aficionados appreciate this world-class guitar virtuoso with countless hits in Spanish and English, including the Doors’ Light My Fire and my favourite ’70s sitcom theme, Chico and the Man.

Wednesday, Aug. 27 April Wine. One of the most prolific Canadian rock bands of the ’70s and ’80s. With more hits than you can fit into one show, this one promises to be a wild night for classic rockers.

Health Minister Eric Hoskins won’t rule out action on e-cigarettes but says he’s gathering more information on the “new phenomenon” as Toronto considers a ban on their use in public places. “There may be measures that need to be taken by the province but I’m not going to prejudge,” Hoskins said Wednesday in the wake of a push by Toronto medical officer of health Dr. David McKeown to have a citywide ban if the Ontario government doesn’t take action by February.

Friday, Aug. 22 Platinum Blonde. They’re back, hair and all. Hey, it Doesn’t Really Matter whether you’re old enough to remember that hit. They still know how to rock.

Thursday, Aug. 28 Hanson. Seventeen years since MMMBop and if the novelty’s worn off, so has the stigma of the family boy band. They are now mature musicians who have honed their skills non-stop since Ice Cube was making R-rated music instead of G-rated films. Expect a receptive, female-heavy audience.

Sunday, Aug. 24 The Orchestra. Don’t let the name fool you. This is a modern incarnation of members from the most underrated rock band of all time, Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). Non-stop classic rock hits from the ’70s and

Saturday, Aug. 30 Tom Cochrane. I never thought about it until the former Red Rider frontman said it, but Life really IS a highway. What can you say about this icon? He’s rock, he’s country, and his fans T:10” Tom Cochrane will be at the CNE on Aug. 30. torstar news service are everywhere.

Special prosecutor approves Bountiful polygamy charges Sect leaders charged. Community members part of Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Polygamy charges against two men have been approved by a special prosecutor in the longrunning investigation of the community of Bountiful, B.C. Independent Special Prosecutor Peter Wilson announced Wednesday that sect leaders Winston Kaye Blackmore and James Mario Oler each face charges of polygamy, and that Oler also faces a charge for the alleged unlawful removal of a child from Canada. In addition, Brandon James Blackmore and Emily Ruth Crossfield each face a charge for the unlawful removal of a child from Canada. The RCMP has been inves-

ges in 2009, the first time Canada’s polygamy laws have been enforced. After their arrests, the B.C. Supreme Court initiated a Reference to determine whether section 293 of the Criminal Code (the polygamy provision) was consistent with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The court upheld section 293 as constitutional. The Criminal Justice Branch said the charges approved by Wilson are similar to the ones they were originally charged with in 2009. Oler’s charge of alleged unlawful removal of children — with the intention that an act of sexual interference or invitation to sexual touching be committed outside Canada — is based on new information as a result of investigations in the U.S., it said. Blackmore and Oler’s first appearances are anticipated to be on Oct. 9 in provincial court in Creston. Matt Kieltyka/Metro in Vancouver With Files from Kristen Thompson

Crumbling venues, billions over budget define Athens ’04’s legacy Greece. Ten years on, the glamour of the 2004 Olympic Games has worn away, leaving only a country in recovery In an obscure corner of a park sits a forlorn reminder that, 10 years ago, Athens hosted the 2004 Summer Olympics. The crumbling miniature theatre is inscribed with the words “glory, wealth, wisdom, victory, triumph, hero, labour” — and is where Olympic officials planted an olive sapling bearing their names for posterity. Once a symbol of pomp, the marble theatre is now an emblem of waste in a venture that left a mixed legacy: a brandnew subway, airport and other vital infrastructure that significantly improved everyday life in a city of four million, set against scores of decrepit sports venues built in a mad rush to meet deadlines — with little thought for post-Olympic use. • Aside from sports stadiums, a brand new subway was built, as well as an airport. • Costs associated with the Games led Greece to spending well over budget, with projects costing between 13 and 14 million euros.

→ See the full instructions on Metro’s Voices page. As Greece groans under a cruel economic depression, questions linger about whether the Athens Games were too ambitious an undertaking for a weak economy. While economists agree it would be unfair to blame the meltdown on the 17-day Games, the postOlympic era is seen as a decade of lost opportunities — including failure to significantly boost the country’s sporting culture. It’s a lesson to which Brazil may pay heed, as it races to complete projects ahead of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. “We didn’t take advantage of this dynamic that we got in 2004,” said former Olympic weightlifting champion Pyrros Dimas, a Greek sporting hero turned Socialist member of Parliament. “We simply made

the biggest mistake in our history: We switched off, locked up the stadiums, let them fall to pieces, and everything finished there.” “We spent a lot of money for some projects (that) are shut and rotting,” said Dimas, who won his last Olympic medal in an Athens arena now reinvented as a lecture and conference venue. “There were projects that should have cost

two and three million (euros) and suddenly became so big that they cost 13 and 14 million. There was no control.” The latest government estimate sets the final cost of the Games at 8.5 billion euros, double the original budget but a drop in the ocean of the country’s subsequent 320 billion-euro debt, which spun out of control after 2008. Former organizing committee chief

Gianna Angelopoulos has commissioned the first independent survey of the Olympics’ overall economic effect. It will aim to weigh Olympic overspend and waste against a possible boost to the crucial tourism industry — arrivals have almost doubled since 2004, from 11.7 to 20.1 million — foreign investment and employment. Greek Olympic Committee head Spyros Capralos, a senior

member of the 2004 organizing committee, said the state of the sporting venues “puts our country to shame.” The former swimming champion and twotime Olympic water polo competitor blames bureaucracy and lack of foresight. “Simply, someone must do whatever is needed for the venues to be taken over by the private sector,” he said. Hold off on holding salt, study suggests Researchers found:

Health. New research questions the need to reduce sodium intake, although scientist says ‘most people should stay where they are’ and not eat more salt A large international study questions the conventional wisdom that most people should cut back on salt, suggesting that the amount most folks consume is OK for heart health — and too little may be as bad as too much. The findings came under immediate attack by other scientists. Limiting salt is still important for people with high blood pressure — and in fact, a second study estimates that too much sodium contributes to up to 1.65 million deaths each year. The studies both have strengths and weaknesses, and come as the U.S. government is preparing to nudge industry to trim sodium in processed

• Sodium levels generally correlate with the risk of high blood pressure. But this link is strongest when sodium intake is high and wasn’t seen at all when consumption is low. • A different nutrient — potassium — seems to lower blood pressure and heart risks, and offsets sodium’s effect. • People who consume 3 to 6 grams of sodium a day had the lowest risk of heart problems or death from any cause during the nearly four-year study.

A large international study challenges the advice for most people to cut back on salt. Unless they have high blood pressure, the amount most folks consume is OK for heart health, and too little may be as bad as too much, the study suggests. Cliff Owen/the associated press file

lifestyles and overall diets instead of a single element, “and that is something everyone can rally around.” No one should view this as permission to eat more salt, he said, adding that “most people should stay where they are.” The study was sponsored by the McMaster institute, non-profit and government

and restaurant foods. The first study’s leader, Dr. Salim Yusuf of McMaster University’s Population Health Research Institute in Hamilton, urged keeping an open mind. “There are those who have made a career out of promoting extreme sodium reduction that will attack us,” he said. It’s better to focus on healthy

groups and industry, but funders had no role in running it. The countries included Canada but not the United States; China accounted for 42 per cent of participants. About 40 per cent had high blood pressure. Sodium levels were estimated from a single urine test instead of the preferred

method of over 24 hours at multiple times, which Yusuf said was impractical in such a big group. That drew criticism from a host of scientists. “This is a fundamental flaw” that undermines confidence in the results, said Dr. Elliott Antman, president of the Heart Association.

Dr. Robert Eckel, a University of Colorado cardiologist and a former Heart Association president, said the single measure is a big limitation, but that researchers “did the best they could” in such a large study and that the findings still have some merit. the associated press

The puzzling case of the renowned Canadian infectious disease expert who tried to smuggle dangerous bacteria to China neared its end Wednesday as the disgraced scientist pleaded guilty to 11 charges. Klaus Nielsen, 68, a onetime lead researcher at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, remains free on bail until his sentencing. A statement of facts agreed to by Nielsen’s lawyers and the Crown provided details of Nielsen’s attempt to take vials of Brucella bacteria to China in his luggage two years ago. But it still left one question largely unanswered: Why did Nielsen put his 32year career and reputation as a scientist on the line? There is no evidence that Nielsen profited from starting up a company to make and sell test kits for brucellosis, an infectious disease caused by Brucella. the canadian press

Egypt. Ousted President Hosni Mubarak defends his years in power In his first speech since being put on trial, Egypt’s toppled President Hosni Mubarak denied Wednesday that he ordered the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that deposed him. Speaking from a gurney, the 86-year-old former leader sought to mend his image, clearly emboldened by the country’s changed political landscape. Speaking from inside a cage that holds defendants, Mubarak gave a 23-minute, uninterrupted address aired live on national television. It

starkly contrasted the dozens of ongoing trials of ousted President Mohammed Morsi and his supporters, toppled in last year’s military overthrow, who are crammed inside soundproof glass cages for their hearings. “Hosni Mubarak who appears before you today would never order the killing of protesters or the shedding the blood of Egyptians,” the former autocrat said, speaking in the third person in an impassioned, defiant statement. The United States is planning an international effort to whisk displaced people to safety in Iraq, and it appears there may be a supporting role for Canada.

The U.S. says it’s in discussions with several countries including Canada about helping Yazidis, Iraqi Christians, and other people who have become displaced by the advance of Islamist fighters. At a White House briefing Wednesday, deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said the U.S. was taking up offers to help those who are under threat from the al-Qaida splin-

Concerns still linger about use of untested Ebola drugs on patients Doctors Without Borders. Organization says doctors considered giving unproven drug to infected phyisician

Doctors treating a leading Sierra Leone physician who became sick with Ebola considered giving him an experimental drug but feared it could trigger a dangerous immune response and did not administer it, Doctors Without Borders said Wednesday. The revelation came the same day that another top doctor from Sierra Leone died of the disease, fuelling a debate about how to apportion a limited supply of untested drugs and vaccines and whether they are even effective. Ebola has killed more than 1,000 people and sickened nearly 2,000 in the current West African outbreak that

has also hit Guinea, Liberia and Nigeria. At the time the experimental treatment was being considered for Dr. Sheik Humarr Khan, his immune system was starting to produce antibodies suggesting he might recover, Doctors Without Borders said in a statement. Khan was due to be transferred to a European hospital that would be more capable of handling side-effects that may arise with the experimental drug, it said. In the end, the treating physicians decided against using the drug. They never told Khan of its existence because they felt it would be unethical to tell him of a treatment they might not use. Shortly after their decision, however, Khan’s condition worsened, the statement said, and the company providing the medical evacuation decided not to transfer him. He died a few days later. The drug is believed to be ZMapp, an experimental drug

Justin Bieber. Canadian pop singer pleads guilty, avoids DUI conviction

The world’s best Scrabble players are squaring off for the title of Scrabble champion. The 25th National Scrabble Championships began in Buffalo on Sunday, with 525 players from 11 countries competing for the $10,000 top prize. By the time it’s all over, contenders in five different divisions will have played 31 games each over five days, with rankings based on winloss records and the number of points by which they outscore opponents. The player to beat is fivetime champion Nigel Richards, an Australian who lives in Malaysia. Will Anderson, an editor from Croton-on-Hudson, was hoping to spell out a serious challenge after finishing third last year. “He’s like the Michael Jordan of our game,” said Anderson, who prepared for the games by solving jumbleword lists and playing practice matches. “He’s in a class by himself and his command of the dictionary is unbelievable.”

Pop star Justin Bieber pleaded guilty Wednesday to misdemeanour charges of careless driving and resisting arrest seven months after his arrest in Miami Beach. The 20-year-old pop star’s plea deal with prosecutors, detailed at a court hearing, includes a 12-hour anger management course, a $50,000 charitable contribution and a $500 fine. .wtf? Yes, that is a real domain suffix

Guessing a website address used to be so simple. Stick a .com or .ca at the end of a company or organization’s name and most of the time, that would do it. But there’s a flood of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) hitting the web, which could eventually leave consumers struggling to remember which of more than 1,400 web suffixes to type in. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is in the process of gradually rolling

The most popular so far has been .club, which was launched by Canadian Colin Campbell, who previously founded the companies Internet Direct, Tucows and Hostopia. More than 90,000 .club URLs have been registered so far and a few were sold off for five-figure fees. Eat. club was purchased for $20,000, English.club went for $17,500, chinese.club was bought for $13,750, and toys.club for $12,500, says Campbell, who also recruited rapper 50 Cent to use the web address 50inda. club for an official fan site. Teen pop star Demi Lovato has also purchased a .club address for her fan club.

... OK, no it isn’t, but it is like Street View for reefs, other wonders It’s easy to go online and get a 360-degree, ground-level view of almost any street throughout the world. Soon, scientists hope people will be able to do the same with coral reefs and other underwater wonders. U.S. government scientists are learning to use specialized fish-eye lenses underwater in the Florida Keys this week in hopes of applying Street View mapping to research and management plans in marine sanctuaries nationwide.

Some of the rotating and panoramic images will be available online as early as this week, including a selection on Google Maps, giving the public a window into ecosystems still difficult and costly to explore for long stretches of time. About 400,000 images have been produced so far of reefs off Australia and in the Caribbean, but this is the first time the technology is being used in North American waters. The images in the U.S. will add scale and details to data that’s already been collected, and illustrate the successes and failures of coral restoration. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

In images previewed by project director Richard Vevers, endangered elkhorn coral, bleached fields of dead coral and coral nurseries suspended like hanging plants in the Keys’ blue waters were in sharp focus as they rotated on screen. • In an hour-long dive, each camera can capture images over an area up to 20 times larger than what’s available with traditional underwater photography equipment, Vevers said.

Depending on where you call home, you’ve likely encountered some very hostile rainstorms and associated flooding this summer, often with scant warning. American states are dealing with very similar events, including Nebraska. On Saturday alone, the town of Kearney endured about nine centimetres of rain — triple the average amount for the entire month of August. The result can be seen here, as CCTV captures a terrifying surge of water crashing through the doors and windows to flood a dining room. (Good Samaritan Hospital/YouTube)

When Dire Straits promised “kicks for free,” in 1985, they couldn’t possibly have known the impact Air Jordan basketball shoes, launched that same year, would have on the sneaker industry. Today, sneakerheads — collectors who covet rare, beautiful and unusual sneakers as works of art — shell out thousands of dollars for the right pair of kicks. This small but growing subculture gathers at the Air Canada Centre Saturday for the second Kicks + TixTO sneaker convention to talk, trade, buy and sell sneakers. “It’s a social event,” says Clayton Smith, event sales manager with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which is organizing the event. “Last year, we had 350 people and 12 vendors.” The 30 slots available for vendors are already sold out. Bad can still bring big box office bucks IN FOCUS

Richard Crouse scene@metronews.ca

For the most part, The Expendables movies have been met with critical disdain. The New Yorker’s Anthony Lane christened the first film “breathtakingly sleazy in its lack of imagination,” while reviewer James Kendrick said the second instalment, was “a better concept than it is a movie.” Both films star a who’s who of 1980s action movie stars — Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, JeanClaude Van Damme, Arnold Schwarzenegger and more — and have exterminated the competition, collecting an average of $289.9 million at the worldwide box office. The Expendables movies appear to be bulletproof to critical missiles but they aren’t the first films to be lambasted by reviewers and then clean up at the box office. Meet the Spartans, a parody of sword and sandal epics from the creators of Scary Movie, currently sits at a two per cent Tomatometer rating at Rotten Tomatoes, but that didn’t stop it from taking the top spot at the box office, narrowly edging out

Stallone’s Rambo reboot, on its 2008 opening weekend. In the end, it made $84,646,831 worldwide — despite being called “one of the most painfully bad comedies I’ve ever had to endure,” by Garth Franklin of Dark Horizons. Adam Sandler is a fan favourite, but finds little love from the critics. Jack and Jill, a 2011 comedy that saw him play twin brother and sister, earned a whopping $149,673,788 worldwide, but was dubbed “relentlessly witless” by the Daily Star while New Zealand critic Liam Maguren wrote, “Burn this. This cannot be seen. By anyone.”

Kelsey Grammer. The man more commonly known as Frasier loosens his tie for a turn in an action flick

pushed a little bit, maybe their imaginations would say, “Oh. Kelsey Grammer. OK, that’s a surprise.” I’m a lot tougher than people think I am. If you know anything about my personal life, you’ll realize that. I thought I could fulfil the requirements of an action film, should that be asked.

Ned Ehrbar

Metro World News in Hollywood

Kelsey Grammer is one of several high-profile additions to the Expendables franchise for its third outing, and even he understands people might find his inclusion in the ’80s throwback testosterone-fest something of a head-scratcher. But, as Grammer tells us, he’s actually tougher than people think. “I’m working at the gym. I’m punching people in the streets,” he jokes. “All those punch videos you’ve been seeing? That’s me.” This is an interesting choice for you, this franchise. What

was your reaction when they first approached you? Actually they didn’t approach me. I had heard there was a role available in The Expendables. I didn’t know what it was, I didn’t know how it was going to play out or what the requirements really were, but I knew if I

Is that something you’ve been looking to do? Oh, I’d love to, I’d love to do it. And who knows, it may happen, it may not happen. But being in this film was a complete joy for me. And Bonaparte actually is a terrific character. He’s just a guy who used to be in some kind of mercenary world and stepped away and is a procurer, basically, now. He puts together teams and he’s been making some pretty good money at it. It was really fun to play, and we kind of just hit on

this sort of Hemingway, broad-shouldered kind of guy who is in the background now a little bit. But my hope is now if we do another one, Bonaparte gets to don the military motley. So to speak.

That Hemingway-esque, life-on-the-road type seems fun. Yeah, who lives big, has lived a big life — and believes in things that some of us believe in still about courage and about showing up and

about taking a stand, being in the fight. I’m one of those guys. A man’s man. How does the breakdown of divisions between the film and TV worlds look from the perspective of someone

who’s been so successful on the TV side? In England, you can go from television to film to stage seamlessly. Nobody has an issue. In America, yeah, we tend to kind of put people in these pockets. It was always my dream that I would break the bonds of Frasier at some point and have a chance to play some other roles. I think Boss helped that, and people went, “Oh wow, I had no idea.” Because they never do. So you have to show them. I did another comedy in England in the spring called Breaking the Bank that’s about a British guy, and of course everybody there said, “I had no idea he was British!” Well, I’m not. I’m an actor. So that’s where we are, we’re still trying to convince people that actors are actors, and we’ll be OK.

I came in and hammered it out,” he says. “I handed out the pages to Sly and (director) Patrick (Hughes) and they looked at it and went, ‘Yeah, it’s cool.’ It was just a theme of somebody who was subcontracted by his government and then thrown under the bus — a real person.” While Gibson clearly had a ball with the Expendables franchise, he’s got other work on his mind, primarily directing. “I think the most fun you can have standing up is directing a film. It’s like my primary want. That’s my gift, I think, direction. I’m going to pursue that,” says Gibson, who won a directing Oscar for Braveheart in 1996.

Mel Gibson is the bad guy in Expendables 3, taking on Sylvester Stallone’s crew of aging action heroes, but that piece of info is news to Gibson. “I didn’t read it thinking I was the bad guy, you know? In fact, I didn’t know I was the bad guy until I saw it,” he insists. “I thought Dolph Lundgren was the bad guy, so it’s a surprise to me and I’m kind of shocked and a little offended. I wanted to be the love interest, but there was no one to love, really.” Joking aside, Gibson was eager to put his own spin on the character of Conrad Stonebanks, a former Expendableturned-arms dealer with a Stallonesized chip on his shoulder. “I kind of worked on the script a little bit and

It Was You Charlie. Shirinian takes the long view with meditative movie It’s hard to love a character like Abner, the flawed protagonist in writer/director Emmanuel Shirinian’s feature debut It Was You Charlie. The Telefilm-funded picture stars Michael D. Cohen as the downtrodden Abner, a night-shift doorman who once had a rather beautiful life as a professor and artist but who now wallows in misery following an accident in which a girl was killed. Spiralling into depression and endless suicidal thoughts, Abner is a miserable creature and yet, under Shirinian’s sure hand, we end up caring very deeply about his surreal plight. “He wasn’t based on anybody, really — he’s an outsider,” the award-winning short filmmaker Shirinian says of his magnetic main character. “He’s the black sheep of the story and there was something appealing to me about a guy that had it all, and yet lost everything when something destructive happened, leaving him unable to surface. There was something heartbreaking about that.”

It Was You Charlie opens this Friday in Toronto. contributed

It Was You Charlie sees Shirinian adapting his craft for a larger canvas, with a denser narrative and obviously larger stakes, and commercial expectations figuring into his art for the first time. Still, the process remained the same. “I made a bunch of short films, true,” notes the director. “But this was no different structurally, save for the amount of time we had. Your

role as a director, I’ve found, is to be a salesman and a negotiator. It’s a battle to find that balance but we were lucky in that I was free to make this movie on my own terms. Everything fell into place. This wasn’t about a paycheque for myself and my cast and crew, rather it was about passion and just doing whatever we could do to make my vision a reality.” chris alexander/metro

Duran Duran hit stage, studio and big screen DD Unstaged. Film by David Lynch enhances footage from the band’s livestream performance in 2011 Nick Rhodes is on the phone to talk about Duran Duran’s concert film collaboration with director David Lynch that’s slated for a one-nightonly theatrical engagement next month. As he talks of being inspired by Lynch’s The Elephant Man as a teenager, he can hear another one of his inspirations nearby: Nile Rodgers on guitar. “I can actually hear him playing the guitar just down the corridor from where I am right now,” Rhodes says gleefully. Next month will mark a period of high activity for Duran Duran. Along with work to finish a new album, the British rock band will appear at the Fashion Rocks concert at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 9 before releasing Duran Duran: Unstaged in more than 300 North American theatres on Sept. 10. The film is an enhanced version of Lynch’s original livestream presentation, with tweaks and enhancements to improve on the 2011 original. The American Express Unstaged series pairs musicians with directors who design a one-off live show that even a band as seasoned as Duran Duran was nervous about. “It literally was live live,” Rhodes said. “It was one of those moments where we all looked at each other and said, ‘Good luck, let’s see what happens.’ “It went out on the Internet just exactly as we played it, and, of course, there were

some things that didn’t work quite as well as others, and footage that didn’t sync up in the most beautiful place that it could have done ... so it’s had a proper polish. It’s been refined for cinema, and it looks beautiful, too. The print is fantastic.” When the group approached Lynch to oversee the initial livestream, he said he’d only consider it if it was “radically different” than the staid concert-film formula. Lynch chose to shoot the piece in black and white — like The Elephant Man, which Rhodes and John Taylor saw together in a Birmingham, England, theatre as teenagers — and created a series of images to run over the top of the band’s performance. “There was a room filled with smoke all the time,” Rhodes said. “There was another room where there were a lot of actors doing strange things. “Then he pre-prepared some other footage, which varied between sort of hand puppets and airplanes and clocks and machinery, and this footage just sort of literally was superimposed over us playing ... and I think the results are really pretty unusual.” The band is shooting for less radically different results in the recording studio, where it has been cutting songs with Nile Rodgers, who co-produced the group’s 1986 album, Notorious. Mark Ronson and Hudson are also producing tracks. The album will be mixed next month, and Rhodes said it will be out in the first half of 2015. “I think we know where we want to be and it’s right in the centre of the dance floor,” Rhodes said. “That’s what we’re aiming for together.” the Associated Press

If it feels good, wear it. You’ve heard that before, but not like this. These days, it’s as much about how clothes feel when you touch them, as it is how you look when you wear them. When you’re searching for new style finds for chillier temperatures, prioritizing fabrics as well as intriguing patterns will land you some enviable finds. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind while seeking out those essential pieces for next season: If this is the fall you buy a new suit, then go for a dark

• Two-buckled, monk strap shoes are all set for their moment this fall, and there are some terrific boots, particularly hybrid hiking boots with a space-age look to them. The one key thing to look for is a thicker sole, crepe if you see it. For socks, think solid colours not stripes, but look for textures and patterns like herringbone and paisley.

topcoat in a heritage fabric or, since this is a year of mixing the dressed with the casual, a down-filled coat or three-quarter outdoors-looking jacket will work. Look for something a little less puffy than the one you’ve been kicking around in the last couple of years. A duffle coat is a great idea as well. The Brits call them roll necks, we call them turtlenecks and yes, turtleneck sweaters are sticking their heads out again. A fine wool turtleneck can replace shirt and tie under a tailored suit with black under black looking great for a big night out. Fisherman knit and cable knit sweaters are going to be worth the financial outlay.

MAX JAMALI

Designer Christopher Bates took time away from Toronto Men’s Fashion Week to give use his list of essential’s every man should own:

1

A casual sports jacket. “It’s the most dynamic piece a man can own. It can be dressed up or down and worn day or night.”

2

A sports jacket in a subtle check is a great wardrobe addition. ISTOCK

grey flannel that has some weight to it. If you want to take a different direction, a wool sports jacket in a subtle check is a great alternative. By subtle, we’re talking colour; the check itself can be large. Where coats are concerned, you can aim for a classic wool

Designer Christopher Bates

A tailored white dress shirt. “This is the linchpin of a man’s wardrobe. You should actually have at least three to account for time to dry clean it if you get lipstick on your collar…”

3 And while we’re on sweaters, a good alternative to something heavy and textured is the new crop of geometrics including classic argyles in bold colours. Get yourself a band-collared shirt, which is, essentially, a shirt without a collar. It will be perfect under a suit. There are bold coloured, patterned scarves to be had and you may have noticed that gold chains are looking kind of good again; one thin chain, nothing bling.

A grey suit. “When you’re building your wardrobe, this is the first suit you should buy. Grey flatters most complexions and you can spice it up with a myriad of shirt and accessory options.”

4

Black leather bomber. “Invest in a high-quality leather bomber and it will last you for ages and get better with time. It’s an edgy piece that says you mean business.”

Legal Matters

Worries over final inspection We have purchased a resale home and our realtor included three visits to the property between signing the deal and the closing date. Tomorrow is the closing, so we took our last opportunity to view the

property, which happened to be after the vendors had moved out. We were upset that the property was extremely dirty, there were holes in the wall where artwork had been hanging and a couple of mirrors that we thought were included in the purchase had been removed. What can we do about these problems?

legal matters

Jeffrey Cowan home@metronews.ca

1. The industry standard for cleanliness of a house you are selling is in broom-swept condition. If the vendors have left refuse and other items behind, you are able to demand

their removal or pay to have the objects removed and send the vendors the bill (collecting might be a bit more difficult if they are the type who would leave a house in that condition). 2. Holes in walls are an easy fix as long as they aren’t huge gaping holes. If you are going to paint then you’ll probably want to make sure the walls are properly patched anyway.

3. Mirrors you thought were included are something you should focus on when writing up the offer. If the mirrors are just hanging on the wall, they are considered chattels and must be included in the list of inclusions. If they are physically attached to the wall, they are fixtures and must be included in the list of fixtures excluded, otherwise they should stay.

The key to all of these problems is to be as detailed as possible when you are sitting down with your realtor discussing what you want left in the house or what you don’t want. Follow Jeff Cowan on Twitter @Cowan_Law or on the website cowanlaw.ca, or email him at jeff@cowanlaw.ca.

Buying in same building a family affair Multi-generational living. Parents and grown children, and siblings, too, choose to buy in same condo Condo trends Duncan McAllister life@metronews.ca

An interesting demographic trend is happening in Toronto. For many people in the city, condos have become their principle residence, taking the place of traditional singlefamily houses. And now, several generations of families are buying within the same condo building in order to stay close. Many midrise developments have sprung up across the GTA, often located on the edge of established, residential neighbourhoods. They appeal to downsizers and their

children — families who have a certain connection with the neighbourhood and don’t wish to leave. Darko Trifunovic recently purchased a suite in one of the twin towers of Pianosi Development’s Perspective condominiums, located along the Humber River at Eglinton and Scarlett Road. His parents purchased there first, downsizing from the family home. They wanted Trifunovic and his sister to move into the building with them. “At first, I wasn’t exactly warm to the idea of living beside them.” Trifunovic says that like many, he was not easy to deal with as a teenager. But now, after moving away from home for a while, his relationship with his folks has improved. “I’m turning 29, I’m engaged, I get married next year.” “My dad sold me on it,” says Trifunovic. “He said, ‘One day when you need me to babysit our grandchildren, you can just bring them upstairs.’ And they want us to move close.

“My dad sold me on it. He said, ‘One day when you need me to babysit our grandchildren, you can just bring them upstairs.’” Darko Trifunovic, 29, who moved into a suite right below his parents’ condo unit.

In the same building is not close enough: My apartment is right below theirs.” Remington Group’s IQ condominiums will also be home to families living in multiple suites. The Queensway in south Etobicoke is an area rich in Italian heritage with strong family ties to the old country. Throughout the 1950s and ’60s, several thousand residents of Roseto Valfortore, a small town in southeast Italy, migrated to Toronto and settled in Etobicoke. As a result, there’s a strong family connection within the community, and now, successive generations are buying suites at IQ. Paul Golini Jr. is one of the principals of Empire Communities, one of the GTA’s most prolific builders. When it comes to multi-generational purchases, they’ve seen it all, he says. “We’ve seen purchasers coming in and then their children actually buying their first home. We’ve had people buy into the community and then their parents come in later and buy. And as well, we’ve had many people come and purchase in the community and then their siblings would also follow them. That’s something that you see sometimes in various multicultural communities.”

Perspective condominiums on the Humber River are home to at least one family living in multiple suites. Contributed

Revitalizing an old neighbourhood

Afreshstart

by the Daniels Corporation. The developer — and BILD member — partnered with Toronto Community Housing Corporation to bring new life into the aging neighourhood with a unique, new approach. The revitalization is expected to take between 15 and 20 years — the first shovel broke ground in 2006 — but unless you’ve actually been there, it’s hard to comprehend just how much it has changed.

Bryan Tuckey

President and CEO of the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) can be found at twitter.com/ bildgta, facebook.com/bildgta, and bildblogs.ca.

One of the biggest transformations currently underway in the City of Toronto is the revitalization of Regent Park

“It’s wonderful to see the reaction people have for the seed of change in Regent Park,” said Daniels’ vicepresident Martin Blake. Much of the success can be attributed to the developer’s unique strategy of starting construction before putting the project on the market. “We build first, and then we go on sale,” Blake explained. “New-home buyers have the opportunity to see,

touch and feel the home design ... before they buy. That is unique in the city.” The approach has so far built hundreds of homes while adding parks, retail, office space and a community centre to the neighbourhood. Revitalizing old neighbourhoods is an important component of building that our industry takes a lot of pride in. Why? Because we live here, too.

Santos waiting for call back up to bigs Reliever Sergio Santos has yet to allow a run in seven appearances since being assigned to triple-A Buffalo. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE

MLB. Blue Jays reliever feels he has worked out his issues with triple-A affiliate When the Toronto Blue Jays sent Sergio Santos to the minor leagues, general manager Alex Anthopoulos said he wanted the reliever to pitch some innings and “get back on track.” Santos is definitely back on track. In 6-2/3 innings over seven appearances since be-

ing assigned to triple-A Buffalo, the right-hander has given up just one hit and no runs. “I feel like I’m in a good place,” Santos said Tuesday night after recording two outs to pick up a save. “I feel a lot better attacking the zone with my fastball, and the command of my fastball has been a little bit better. I’m not kind of missing over the plate, I feel like I’m getting thirds, whether it’s the inner or outer half.” Satisfied with his performance with the Bisons, Santos

has been left to wonder why the Blue Jays haven’t called him back up to the majors or given him any indication on when they might. “I haven’t had any communication with them, which has been a little frustrating at times because I feel like I’ve ironed some of the things

out that I needed to iron out and I’m just waiting for that opportunity to go back out there and hopefully do what I’m doing here,” Santos said. In Santos’ place, the Blue Jays have blue-chip prospect Aaron Sanchez, who is one of five right-handers in the bullpen along with closer Casey Janssen, Chad Jenkins, Todd Redmond and Dustin McGowan. Santos has a 7.78 earnedrun average in 24 appearances for the Blue Jays this season after putting up a 1.75 ERA in 2013. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Steve Lee had a dilemma. The operator of Pro Image, a sports merchandise retailer at Square One, wanted to sell Cleveland Cavaliers jerseys bearing the name of Vaughan’s Andrew Wiggins. But because NBA licensee Adidas hadn’t decided which jerseys it would ship to Canada for the 2014-2015 season, the shirts weren’t available. So Lee went online and bought nine Wiggins jerseys at full price to resell at his shop. Wiggins will reportedly be traded to the Timberwolves as soon as next weekend. The Cavs are expected to trade him to Minnesota star Kevin Love. “I actually ordered more, but they didn’t come,” says Lee, who is selling the jerseys for $140. “They’re still selling. Two sold right away.” The number of Wiggins jerseys available is so small that if he changes teams this summer, the jersey could become a rare collector’s gem. “That jersey could be worth $600, $700 or $1,000 in five years, depending on how Wiggins’ career goes,” said Casey Pitocchelli, head of Philadelphia-based Rare VNT. NBA denies urging Raps to dismiss Drake

Raptors’ global brand ambassador Drake recently pitched Kevin Durant the idea of signing with the team when he becomes a free agent. THE CANADIAN PRESS FILE

The NBA is refuting a Globe and Mail report that suggested the league offered to drop a tampering fine issued to the Toronto Raptors if the team removed Drake’s title of global brand ambassador. The league recently fined the team after Drake, a popular Toronto rapper, let Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant know he was wanted in Canada during a concert that the Thunder star attended earlier this month. During the performance, Drake shouted to his hometown crowd to show the league’s

Tim Frank, the league’s senior vice-president of basketball communications, said in an email to The Canadian Press on Wednesday. “At no point did we suggest his title be removed but we were clear that as long as he acted as a representative of the team, he is subject to the league’s rules.” Drake, who calls some of the league’s biggest stars his close friends, was formally introduced as the global brand ambassador of the team last September. “He’s great to have, but an accident waiting to happen.” Richard Scudamore, CEO of the Premier League, saying he wasn’t exactly heartbroken over Luis Suarez’s $130-million transfer from Liverpool to Barcelona in July.

“Welcome to Vanchester” reads the message on a giant billboard on one of Manchester’s busy streets. Above the words, a picture of a smiling Louis van Gaal, his arms outstretched in a triumphant pose, dominates the red background. And it’s not just the landscape of the city that is changing following Van Gaal’s hiring as Manchester United manager. With three days to go until the Premier League season begins, English football is also wising up to the fact it has a new firebrand coach in its midst, someone who has never been afraid to speak his mind or issue reminders of his qualities and past achievements. Manchester City, the reigning Premier League champion, is talking about finally making its mark in Europe. Arsenal is sensing its best chance to win the league title in years. And Chelsea has been installed as one of the favourites for the championship following the arrival of attackers Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas.

One out

Luke Shaw, one of Manchester United’s two major signings this off-season, has been ruled out for about four weeks with a hamstring injury. United announced the injury to the England left back on Wednesday, three days before the club begins its Premier League campaign.

Van Gaal has wasted no time in making his presence felt at Old Trafford and, as expected, he’s been in the thick of the headlines. Already, he’s spoken of his concerns that United’s vast commercial commitments were impinging on football matters. He’s questioned the suitability of the main field at United’s training centre. He has changed the formation of the team to one rarely used in English football: a 3-5-2. He has been openly critical of one of his player’s fitness (new signing Luke Shaw). And he is in the process of overhauling the playing squad, with some high-profile names either already out or starting to pack their bags. “Manchester United shall do everything to adapt to my rules for good preparation,” he said then.
